- 0:00I publish a lot. Monday, Wednesday to Friday. Sometimes
- 0:04I've published every day. It's a lot of work, but I
- 0:07really enjoy it. And a couple of weeks ago, I
- 0:10did a podcast as a guest and somebody asked me after the show,
- 0:13they said, Hey, you publish a lot. Like that is a crazy schedule that you hold.
- 0:17How do you do it? And a lot of times I say, Hey, look,
- 0:21here's my schedule. This is how I do it. It's
- 0:24a little crazy at times, but if I plan enough, I can get it
- 0:28done. And I gave them the reason
- 0:31why I did it. And they were like, wow, okay, that's pretty cool.
- 0:35And a lot of times, it's against what other people say. You know, all
- 0:39the experts, the quote unquote experts. But it works for me.
- 0:43So if you're here to listen to, hey, this is, I
- 0:46wanna be a science communicator, I wanna publish online, whether it be a
- 0:49podcast, whether it be a video podcast, whether it be videos, a vlog, or
- 0:52whatever, but I don't know how much I can do, how much content I
- 0:56can come up with. It works with what you work
- 0:59with, what you can do. Do what you can do, do what you're
- 1:02comfortable with. But I'm going to talk about why I do what I do and
- 1:06how I do it on this episode of the How to Protect the Ocean podcast.
- 1:10Let's start the show. Hey
- 1:15everybody, welcome back to another exciting episode of the How to Protect the Ocean podcast.
- 1:18I'm your host Andrew Lewin, and this is the podcast where you find out what's happening in the
- 1:22ocean, how you can speak up for the ocean, what you can do to live for a better ocean
- 1:25by taking action. And on today's episode, we're going to be talking about
- 1:29this podcast and about what I do that makes
- 1:33me happy. A lot of times I say I do this for a
- 1:36living, but it's Not technically true. I
- 1:39do this a lot and it's almost like a full-time job,
- 1:43but I do it as a bit of a side hustle. I like to call it. I don't make
- 1:46a ton of money on it. In fact, I don't make a lot of money on it,
- 1:50but I do love what I do and I do spend
- 1:54a lot of time on it. I do it because I love it.
- 1:57It keeps me connected to the ocean while I'm here in Ontario,
- 2:02Canada, surrounded by the beautiful Great Lakes, but
- 2:05I love the ocean so much. I want to stay connected with the people and
- 2:08the stories and everything that goes on. I
- 2:12want that to happen so that
- 2:16you can get involved. You can find out what's
- 2:19happening with the ocean. And in that, in my mission is
- 2:23to make sure I cover everything that I can cover as
- 2:26much as I can. Because there's a lot of information out there and I want you
- 2:29to get it into your earbuds, right? As
- 2:34easily and effective as possible through this podcast. That's why I do
- 2:37what I do. Now I publish a lot. A lot. I
- 2:41publish Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays. And I love to do that.
- 2:45I love to publish Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays because I can
- 2:48get more information out there. And I love to talk about the ocean. It keeps me connected.
- 2:51It's almost like a full-time job, right? But I have a full-time job that actually helps
- 2:55me pay my mortgage. This full-time job helps me follow
- 2:59my passion, do what I love to do. If I was able to do this
- 3:02full-time, I'll tell you I would do this full-time. I'd probably put out more content.
- 3:06But regardless, as I work towards that, I'm
- 3:10here to continue to provide the information because I think it's necessary. I
- 3:13think it's part not only of my mission, but I feel like
- 3:16it's really helpful for people, right? I may not have the biggest podcast,
- 3:20not even close, but I continually produce.
- 3:25And for a lot of the podcasts that have come and gone, I'm
- 3:28still here. And there's a reason why I keep it independent, and I'll talk
- 3:31about that in a second, but I'm
- 3:34still here. I'm still producing. Right. I still publish
- 3:38episodes. So a lot of times I've outworked other podcasts. A
- 3:41lot of times I continue to just put it out. And that's
- 3:45important. But today I'm going to talk about why I do it. and
- 3:48how I do it, because I think that's really important. I
- 3:51mean, you've kind of heard the why. I feel this necessity
- 3:56to put out this information because I continue to meet people
- 3:59who don't know anything about the ocean. And so when I say, hey, if
- 4:02you want to find out more and people are interested, listen to
- 4:05my podcast. Here it is, How to Protect the Ocean. I
- 4:09can share it. I can send a link to it. What's
- 4:12your favorite podcast app? All right, I'm going to send it to you. Take a listen. Let me know
- 4:15what you think. It's time that we have call to action. It's time
- 4:18that I get more aggressive in sharing it. I'm more apt to share it to
- 4:21people now than I was when I first started because I'm more confident in
- 4:25the podcast. I've heard feedback. I get a
- 4:28lot of reviews, which is nice. Not lately. By the way, I need
- 4:31some more reviews lately. I'd love to hear what you think about these episodes and
- 4:35the podcast. Just go to Apple or go to Spotify or your favorite podcast
- 4:39app, and if you can leave a review, please leave a review. I'd love some updated ones.
- 4:42I think the last one I had was in 2022. So I need those reviews. I'd
- 4:45love to hear. I just like to hear the feedback. So it's always great. But I digress. I
- 4:50do this because I love it. But I do this as a second,
- 4:53you know, as a second thing, right? It's the second thing. It's the third thing, really,
- 4:57because I'm a parent of two teenage daughters, wonderful teenage daughters who
- 5:00are going through high school and they need some help, some guidance as
- 5:04a parent does. Right. And then I have a full time job that pays my bills, that
- 5:07takes up most of my day. So it's a lot of work. It's
- 5:10a lot of work. And I need to stay focused. So the first thing that
- 5:14I do is I stay focused. I get sleep. I work
- 5:17out. I try and stay healthy because I'm sitting a lot. I'm not doing
- 5:21as good of a job that I'd like, but I'm trying to stay focused. And to stay focused, I
- 5:27use a lot of healthy things. And one of those healthy things I've
- 5:30talked about in this podcast before is magic mind. Magic mind is
- 5:33probably my little shot of focus that I like
- 5:36to have. It's this sort of elixir that
- 5:40I have every morning. And the people at
- 5:44Magic Mindset, they reached out to me. And they were like, hey, you need to
- 5:47try this. This is really good. And it's got a lot of
- 5:52natural ingredients that I have. What I like about it is
- 5:55the caffeine release. It's like a timed release. So when I
- 5:59have it, it's not like a shot of adrenaline that I get. But
- 6:02it actually works to release the caffeine over one
- 6:06to three hours. And it just kind of gives me that energy to
- 6:09focus especially when I'm about to work after a long day
- 6:12at work or after parenting or after coaching football or whatever that
- 6:16I'm doing and I need to put out an episode I do that I
- 6:19use those as a little bit of a shot of like focus and then it
- 6:22gives me a little bit of energy That goes a long, long way.
- 6:25So, you know, as I as I do this and as I talk about
- 6:29this stuff, I would love for you to benefit as well. If you're doing a lot in
- 6:32a day, you're trying to get your career on track, communications or
- 6:35scientific or conservation. But I wanted to
- 6:39give you a limited time offer that gets you up to 48 percent
- 6:42off your first subscription or 20 percent off a one time purchase with
- 6:46the code TheOceanBlue20. All one
- 6:49word, THEOCEANBLUE20 at checkout. Put that
- 6:53in and go to magicmind.com forward slash
- 6:56THEOCEANBLUE and then at the checkout put in THEOCEANBLUE20 for
- 7:0320% off a one-time purchase or 48% off your first subscription. I
- 7:06highly recommend it. It keeps me focused to put out episodes Monday,
- 7:10Wednesday, and Friday. Now I have to admit, I've been
- 7:14very, over the last few months, I've been very tempted
- 7:18to put out an episode a day for the
- 7:21weekday. So Monday to Friday, put out an episode a day. And
- 7:24I tried to do that in June. I did that in June. I did it for two weeks.
- 7:28I did it for during Oceans Week because I wanted to do something special for
- 7:31Oceans Week. I had a lot of content. A lot of people contacted me beforehand. I
- 7:34did a bunch of interviews. I put out, you know, five days a
- 7:37week pieces of content. It was great. I enjoyed it.
- 7:41It was a lot of fun. It was a lot of work though because I was traveling that week. It
- 7:44was a lot of work. I had to record going in during
- 7:48the week. I was at a conference for my work. I was traveling. It
- 7:52was very difficult to do. When I got back that next
- 7:55week, I tried doing it again. I didn't get a good track
- 7:59record of doing it, so I stopped. I felt a little bit exhausted when
- 8:02I did it. When you put a podcast together, it's
- 8:06a really great thought. And when you're thinking about launching one,
- 8:09you're like, oh, this is really good. It's going to be really helpful. And it is helpful for
- 8:13your organization, for you as an individual. It
- 8:16is helpful to continually, consistently put out episode,
- 8:20whether whatever that schedule is works for you. It
- 8:24helps, but it is still a lot of work. You know, depending
- 8:28on what you want to do, it is still a lot of work. And so to do that
- 8:31work, you have to actually put
- 8:34in that time and put in that work. And it's going to be slow at
- 8:37the beginning, but it gets faster and faster as you go through, as you find
- 8:41your style, as you find your workflow and what works for
- 8:45you and what doesn't, right? That's the big benefit. And
- 8:48so for me to put out five days a week I have to
- 8:51batch record, even with three days a week, I batch record. So on the weekend, I
- 8:54look up some stuff or I have something planned or an interview planned that
- 8:58I record a couple of weeks ago or that week, and for the next
- 9:02week, I have planned. So right now, this is my second episode of
- 9:06next week of what I'm gonna put out. I already did my
- 9:09first episode, I'm doing my second episode right now, and
- 9:12I've got a third episode during the week that I'm gonna be doing an interview, which will
- 9:15come later on on Friday, the next episode. But
- 9:19I batch record on the weekend so that I can make sure that I have something ready
- 9:23for that week so that I don't do it during the week. I'm not tired. The
- 9:27shows are better. They're more thoughtful. I can
- 9:30think about them. I can plan them out a little better. And then I go and I do
- 9:33those episodes. But when I edit, it's a quick edit. I
- 9:37think a lot of the people when we talk about creating content
- 9:41as content creators, whether you're in science, whether you're an entrepreneur, whether
- 9:45you're doing wine, it doesn't matter what genre or
- 9:48what niche you're in, if you're
- 9:51putting out content to advertise or you're putting out content
- 9:55as a method of connecting with an audience to sell something or
- 9:59to sell a message or to give off a message, A
- 10:04lot of people don't talk about the editing and the time it takes to
- 10:07edit and put things together. A lot of times we talk about the recording, what
- 10:11equipment you need and all that kind of stuff. We focus on that because that's the beginning stage.
- 10:14That's the first thing you want to do is you want to go out and buy equipment. You've
- 10:18got to plan your show. The launch is really important, but what we don't talk about
- 10:21is the maintenance. How many episodes do you do a week? When do you know to increase?
- 10:25When do you know to decrease if you want to go more? How
- 10:28do you know what content? Can I run out of content? All
- 10:32those questions are questions that people ask all of
- 10:35the time. A lot of creators who
- 10:39are talking about podcasting or content creation, they talk
- 10:42about it a little bit here and there, but not really a huge focus from
- 10:46what I've seen. But the editing is really not focused
- 10:49on other than actual specific. This is how you edit or this is
- 10:52how you edit this. There's a lot of content around that, but the actual
- 10:56process and what you feel comfortable with and what you don't
- 10:59feel comfortable with and what it matters for your workflow. So
- 11:03for me, as an example, I put out three episodes, sometimes five.
- 11:07I put out three episodes a week. Well, I can't spend four
- 11:11hours editing an episode. I have
- 11:14to let that episode go as is almost I
- 11:18have to make sure that everything that I say it's
- 11:21a planned You know, script or it's
- 11:25a planned bullet point. So I know exactly what I want to say. I am
- 11:29not a Polish speaker. I am not a broadcaster or
- 11:32radio host. I'm somebody who's passionate about the ocean. I
- 11:36have a good background in ocean conservation, a decent background
- 11:39in ocean science. I haven't practiced research in a long time, although
- 11:43I read a lot about it. But I'm a communicator and
- 11:47I want to put out as much content as possible that
- 11:50my schedule allows and that I enjoy, but
- 11:53I can't spend four hours an episode editing. I have to
- 11:57kind of just do a five to ten minute edit and let it
- 12:00go. And that's my process. That's my workflow. You
- 12:03know, you get this episodes as is with the
- 12:07ums and the ahs. And sometimes the awkward pauses kind of
- 12:10gets out, but I try and edit those out. But I, I basically
- 12:13record, I'm going to record this episode. I'm going to stop it.
- 12:17I'm going to add music to the front and the end as you hear, as you go. And I just
- 12:20kind of clean it up a little bit, spend about five to 10 minutes, and
- 12:24then I export it. And then I do the show notes, use
- 12:27a little AI to do the show notes to help me do that. And
- 12:30then I'm done, right? And then I upload it. But then you
- 12:34upload it, then what? Well, you got to promote it. You
- 12:38got to let people know about it, whether it be on social media, whether
- 12:42it be getting on other podcast episodes. So there's
- 12:45a lot of work into that and some of it gets sacrificed. And
- 12:48it really depends on what you want to do for your show. There
- 12:52are people who dedicate their entire life
- 12:56or their entire timetable to promoting and
- 12:59recording their podcast, which I admire. So they will
- 13:02invest their time, they will sacrifice maybe working or
- 13:06jobs and just focus on that full time. And what they'll
- 13:09do is they'll get, you know, get on other podcasts, talk to
- 13:12other podcasters about the show and what they want to do and offer
- 13:16value on other shows. Whereas like for me, I
- 13:20produce my episodes, I share them here and there, but essentially the
- 13:23people who are listening are the people who are going to get the episodes. If you share
- 13:27the episode, that's great. If you think, hey, you know, my
- 13:30buddy or my family member or my partner may
- 13:33enjoy this episode, so I'm going to send it to them. And
- 13:37that's great, right? That's what I love to hear. Colleague, whatever that might be,
- 13:40professor, hey, Andrew covered your
- 13:43story recently that you did or your research that you did. So here
- 13:46it is. What do you think? Hopefully they like it. Hopefully
- 13:50I did them justice. But we put that together because
- 13:54I put that together because I love to do what I
- 13:57do, but I don't necessarily have all the time to do the promotion. Hopefully
- 14:00that'll change in the future as things open up. Football season's
- 14:04done soon. And I can do more work on that. But
- 14:07that's where I really stand when I put out the stuff. There's
- 14:11sacrifices that I have to make in editing, in promotion, right?
- 14:15There's sacrifices. But as long as I still get to talk to
- 14:19you three times a week, I'm happy. You get to hear
- 14:22my voice and what I'm saying, and hopefully you like it enough to listen to it
- 14:25three days a week. You don't have to listen to it three days a week. You can listen to it every once
- 14:28in a while and binge it or whatever that might be. Some
- 14:32of my audience members listen to it every time I publish it.
- 14:35Others say, hey, I haven't listened to it in a while. I'm really sorry. I never take
- 14:38offense to that. Right? I put out a lot of episodes. But
- 14:42it's so that you can go back and listen to it. If somebody says, hey, Andrew was
- 14:45talking about, or there was an article out about how sewage got out
- 14:49for like tens of thousands of hours in the UK waterways. Did
- 14:52you hear about that? Oh, I actually did. Andrew talked about that on his podcast,
- 14:55How to Protect the Ocean. You should take a listen. Here's the link. Right?
- 14:59So that people can know more about that. That's the idea.
- 15:02It's a resource for people when it's there, and people who listen to it can share it.
- 15:06You can share it. That's how I grow the podcast. It's slow, but
- 15:09it's steady. And I think that's important. But
- 15:13that, you know, when people say, oh, you know, you should only
- 15:17put out once a week, you should only put, it's like, do what works for
- 15:20you. A lot of times when I listen, I listen to a lot
- 15:23of content creators or coaches for content creators and they've been through
- 15:27it and they've, you know, they talk about how to create
- 15:30on YouTube, how to create on audio podcasts and Spotify
- 15:34and all this kind of stuff. And they're talking about the next trend and what you should be
- 15:38taking advantage of and all this and blah, blah, blah. And
- 15:41that's great, but a lot of times they recommend, start off slow. Because yes, you
- 15:44should start off slow. I started off with once a week. It took me a year to
- 15:47record all of them to put out once a week for 10 episodes. Because I
- 15:51was so scared of launching a podcast on
- 15:54science and conservation of oceans. Because I didn't think I
- 15:58had such imposter syndrome at the time. Now, I just love to
- 16:01do it. When I talk to people, I just say, just publish. Don't
- 16:04go through all the crazy editing process. It's going to take you so much
- 16:08time. Then you're going to realize you can't do it all. It's
- 16:11going to be really hard. It might be expensive. You decide to go for an
- 16:14editor. You don't have the money. There's a lot of things that can
- 16:18go wrong or that can make it seem really tedious. The
- 16:21big thing for me and my style is we need to get the message out
- 16:24there. Some people may want to put in four hours of editing, and
- 16:28that's fine. I think that's great. Just realize you're going to put out less
- 16:31episodes depending on your time, right? And
- 16:35realize that if you want it to grow, you have to advertise for
- 16:38it. You have to go on other podcasts. You have to talk to
- 16:42people about it. It is a lot of work to
- 16:45do, and depending on your schedule, depending on your
- 16:48workflow, depending on how much time you have for it, you have to put out
- 16:52a lot of stuff. You have to do a lot, so you can only
- 16:56do what your schedule allows you to do, what your mind allows
- 16:59you to do, so you don't burn out. I was just listening to a podcast on
- 17:03YouTube videos and vlogging in a new style of vlogging. You
- 17:06know, the guy was talking about his wife, how his wife has vlogged
- 17:10since the beginning, like since the early 2007s and like
- 17:13full on vlog editing seven days a week. And she
- 17:17continues to do that. And she does it probably more
- 17:20efficiently now because she's been doing it for almost two decades. But,
- 17:25you know, she continues to do that. She has never burnt out,
- 17:28never thought about burning out. She's doing what she loves. She makes money
- 17:32off of it. And that's her kind of style. But
- 17:35it's a lot of editing. It's a lot of work. She does it all herself. You
- 17:39know, the guy, the husband or the partner who was talking, he
- 17:42was like, I have a new style editing where I don't, I barely edit. I just
- 17:46put things together. You know, I don't put all the stuff
- 17:49you put in a vlog, like brushing your teeth in the morning, start the video off,
- 17:52and this and that. There's no, I tell, he goes, I tell stories. I
- 17:55show what, he's a cooking show, and he's got, I got cooking. And that's what I
- 17:58do, because that's what works for him. And he'll put out, you
- 18:02know, five days a week of content, because he can. He has an editor who
- 18:06helps him out with the, you know, the thumbnail and
- 18:09the titles, which you really have to focus on, and, you know, things
- 18:12like that, and the content, and coming up with the ideas, and all that kind
- 18:16of stuff. There's a lot that goes into all this communication stuff.
- 18:20But we need to focus on that. We need it for our communication of
- 18:23the oceans. And the people who will do it, the executors,
- 18:28the people who are the go-getters, are going to do it. But please
- 18:32have that in mind when you do it. When you put out your episodes,
- 18:35don't think you're gonna put out five days a week or seven days a week. It's a lot of
- 18:39work. You may not have the time. I'm not saying you can't do it from a
- 18:43talent perspective. Can you do it from a
- 18:46logistics perspective? Can you do it from, will you enjoy it if you
- 18:49continue to do it? That's what you have to think about, right?
- 18:53That's the big issue. And if you can't, that's fine. You
- 18:57gotta figure out a way though. And so I want you guys to
- 19:01learn about that. I want you guys to know about that before you get into it.
- 19:05But for me, that question of, man, you publish a lot.
- 19:08How do you do it? I do it because I love it. And it's not I'm saying that
- 19:11you don't love it. It's I love it. And this is what I love to do.
- 19:15This is what I love to talk about. But there are sacrifices in the content,
- 19:18the type of content that I make, and the type of edits, and the type of product
- 19:22that I put out. It's not going to be the most polished. It's
- 19:25not going to be a wondery podcast or it's not going to be, you
- 19:29know, something that is put out that is going to be amazing. It's
- 19:32going to be worthwhile putting on a Netflix podcast or anything like
- 19:35that. This is a podcast of me speaking directly to
- 19:39you the way I speak. There's
- 19:42the ums, there's the ahs, there's the awkward pauses, there's the emotion in
- 19:46it too because sometimes you never know what you're going to say. But
- 19:50I put out the content. I do the work, and I've been
- 19:54doing it for almost 10 years, and I'm happy to do
- 19:57it. Actually, over 10 years now, because I started in
- 20:052014. There's no stopping. There is no stopping. No matter how many times
- 20:08I stumble over my words like I just did, there is no stopping, and I
- 20:12love doing it. So, if you're thinking about
- 20:15starting some kind of science communication, digital platform, or
- 20:18content creation, Know that the people who do it,
- 20:21and the people you watch, are consistent for a reason. They love it,
- 20:25and they have time for it. They make time for it. And their content is sort
- 20:29of a definition of what type of workflow they can
- 20:32put into it. And it's not an excuse. This
- 20:36is just the reality of it, and the fun that goes into it, and
- 20:39the way to be creative. And so that's sort
- 20:43of what I wanted to say today, for people who say, hey, you
- 20:46put out a lot of content. How do you do it? I do it
- 20:49because I love it. And I do it because I can. And
- 20:53I'm not going to stop. So anyway, if you ever have any questions about
- 20:56that, about science communication and putting stuff out, please let me know if you
- 20:59work for an organization or you're just an individual who wants to put
- 21:02out science and ocean conservation or wildlife biology
- 21:06kind of stuff. Hit me up if you're looking to do a podcast. I'd
