- 0:00Speaker 1: Until ramas Law hotline car accident you need Rama's Law
- 0:02Speaker 1: medical doctor and attorney ramos Law dot com or joined
- 0:05Speaker 1: by Jeff Legwell, the ESPN dot com legy. How are
- 0:08Speaker 1: we doing this morning?
- 0:10Speaker 2: I'm good. Are you guys doing well?
- 0:12Speaker 3: Do you know?
- 0:13Speaker 4: I was going to ask you what you do during
- 0:14Speaker 4: a bye week? But I know that you don't do anything.
- 0:18Speaker 2: I do football.
- 0:20Speaker 4: That's what I'm talking about.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Jeff's a football robot, and that's why we love talking
- 0:25Speaker 1: to him because he got all the info in part
- 0:27Speaker 1: of what I want to ask, Leggy, is this statement
- 0:31Speaker 1: incorrect that given the opponent in the situation, lack of
- 0:35Speaker 1: your starting running back, was that Bo's best game of
- 0:38Speaker 1: the year.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Well, I think his best game of the year against
- 0:43Speaker 2: somebody that offered the most resistance. How about that? Yes,
- 0:48Speaker 2: I mean that's I I thought, you know, his mechanics were,
- 0:54Speaker 2: and you know we've all been talking a lot about that,
- 0:56Speaker 2: but I thought, as mechanics were, we're better, uh. And
- 1:01Speaker 2: it showed you know what what he can do when
- 1:04Speaker 2: the mechanics are right. And you know that was without
- 1:08Speaker 2: even really consistent you know, run game to slow people
- 1:14Speaker 2: down in the pass rush. I think if they could
- 1:16Speaker 2: even add a little more of that, it would it
- 1:19Speaker 2: would help them a little more. But uh, but his
- 1:22Speaker 2: mechanics were better, and I think that bodes well because
- 1:25Speaker 2: they're gonna have to be now, you know, the rest
- 1:28Speaker 2: of the way, you know, and if they're going to
- 1:30Speaker 2: do anything in the postseason, if they you know, they
- 1:34Speaker 2: get the postseason spot they want, if you're really going
- 1:36Speaker 2: to make the most of it, he's gonna have to
- 1:39Speaker 2: be at his best.
- 1:40Speaker 3: Well, Legy, you just mentioned run game. I don't know
- 1:44Speaker 3: if they have the horses there now, do they? I mean,
- 1:46Speaker 3: can julil McLoughlin. I'll give him credit. They gave him
- 1:49Speaker 3: the ball in the red zone. He ran it between
- 1:51Speaker 3: the tackles. I didn't envision him being that kind of
- 1:54Speaker 3: running back, but that's exactly what he did.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Yeah, you know Vic in college, he obviously it was
- 2:01Speaker 2: a smaller school situation for him, but he was a
- 2:05Speaker 2: high volume back in college, so that you know, there
- 2:10Speaker 2: were questions about his height and his weight, but there
- 2:13Speaker 2: weren't many questions about his physical durability when he came
- 2:17Speaker 2: into the league. So I think he has that in him.
- 2:20Speaker 2: It's just your you know, you're going to have to
- 2:24Speaker 2: create a crease for him, but he will get through there.
- 2:28Speaker 2: You know that there's just a little more of a
- 2:30Speaker 2: responsibility from the offensive line to make room. He isn't
- 2:35Speaker 2: really going to push the pile all that often, but
- 2:38Speaker 2: if you give him the crease, he can do that
- 2:41Speaker 2: type of thing. And I thought it was very telling that,
- 2:44Speaker 2: you know, he hadn't he had one carry all season
- 2:48Speaker 2: before Sunday, and they didn't just put him back on
- 2:52Speaker 2: the roster, they or put him back on the game
- 2:54Speaker 2: day roster. They were giving him the ball. So I
- 2:58Speaker 2: think they're going to look for him to be a
- 3:00Speaker 2: bigger part of it. But this is really going to
- 3:03Speaker 2: fall on Harvey. You know, it's really hard at this
- 3:07Speaker 2: point in the year, especially now that practice squads are
- 3:10Speaker 2: so much bigger than they were years ago. It's really
- 3:13Speaker 2: hard to find a player out on the street who's
- 3:17Speaker 2: going to have a significant impact for you. So a
- 3:20Speaker 2: lot of your solutions are going to have to come
- 3:22Speaker 2: in house, and you know, this solution with Dobbin's injury
- 3:27Speaker 2: is going to have to fall to Harvey in a
- 3:29Speaker 2: lot of ways.
- 3:30Speaker 4: Jeff, when do I have your permission to stop worrying
- 3:33Speaker 4: about the Chiefs and worry about other teams.
- 3:37Speaker 2: I think the Chiefs are always so worry because they
- 3:40Speaker 2: have they have the most proven, you know, championship quarterback
- 3:47Speaker 2: in the in the get you know, they want to
- 3:48Speaker 2: three super Bowls in a row. It's not like they
- 3:50Speaker 2: don't know how to do this. But you know, the
- 3:52Speaker 2: math is the math. And the Broncos really staggered them Sunday,
- 3:58Speaker 2: and I think you could see how they played, how
- 4:02Speaker 2: important they thought that game was. I mean, the Chiefs
- 4:05Speaker 2: were slugging it out with the Broncos and it said
- 4:08Speaker 2: a lot to me about the Broncos how they withstood that,
- 4:12Speaker 2: because that that was a playoff tempo game, a playoff
- 4:18Speaker 2: you know, attitude game from the Chiefs. That's that's why
- 4:22Speaker 2: it looked the way it did, because that's how games
- 4:24Speaker 2: in January often look. And I think that was one
- 4:29Speaker 2: of the most impressive things for the Broncos that the
- 4:32Speaker 2: Chiefs were playing. I think it was clear to them
- 4:37Speaker 2: for a lot of their playoff life. And the Broncos
- 4:39Speaker 2: still hung in there. But as long as they have
- 4:42Speaker 2: Mahomes and there's a mathematical chance, I think they're always,
- 4:47Speaker 2: you know, should be on people's minds.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Jeff LEAGWELLDESPN dot com with this All Conversations with Leggie
- 4:53Speaker 1: brought you at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers iv
- 4:56Speaker 1: W Local sixty eight. Start with the job and with
- 4:59Speaker 1: the career. One of the things that we're talking about
- 5:01Speaker 1: was better in this last game. But it felt like
- 5:03Speaker 1: Courtland Sutton's just not being targeted as much as he
- 5:06Speaker 1: should and he is behind Troy Franklin in targets this year.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Is that a byproduct of the defense king on Courtland
- 5:15Speaker 1: Sutton or is that something else?
- 5:17Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what you're basically seeing is every defensive coordinator
- 5:22Speaker 2: I know would say the same thing is they're gonna
- 5:26Speaker 2: make somebody else feed them. They don't believe right now
- 5:30Speaker 2: yet if there's anyone else in the Broncos offense that
- 5:33Speaker 2: they have to double cover. Now. You know, Broncos made
- 5:38Speaker 2: some big plays down the field at key times against
- 5:43Speaker 2: that strategy, but as of yet, no one's been willing
- 5:47Speaker 2: to to, you know, stray from the double Courtland or
- 5:52Speaker 2: Lean the safety. They're getting a lot of safety lean
- 5:55Speaker 2: as they call it. And so that's gonna take bowl
- 5:59Speaker 2: As through his progressions. That's going to take him away
- 6:02Speaker 2: from Sutton. Now, you know, five years from now, you know,
- 6:05Speaker 2: in a similar situation with another receiver, you know, would
- 6:09Speaker 2: he probably go there more? I would think so. But
- 6:12Speaker 2: as a young quarterback, when he sees the safety lean
- 6:16Speaker 2: or the movement or what he thinks is is going
- 6:19Speaker 2: to be help, he's going to go somewhere else with
- 6:22Speaker 2: the ball because that's the way he's been He's been coached,
- 6:26Speaker 2: So a lot of it is that. But you know,
- 6:28Speaker 2: until defenses decide that maybe other people can hurt them,
- 6:34Speaker 2: Sutton's going to have to sort of live with making
- 6:37Speaker 2: the big moment catches when he finds the space, you know,
- 6:40Speaker 2: in a zone or or you know, in some combo coverages,
- 6:44Speaker 2: because he still makes those. You know, the third down
- 6:46Speaker 2: catch may have been the biggest play anybody made in
- 6:49Speaker 2: the game, and that came because he found a space.
- 6:53Speaker 2: I don't think that was the exact route. I think
- 6:55Speaker 2: he just created a spot and both found him.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Follow up on that. We were asking this question yesterday,
- 7:02Speaker 1: and I don't want to be accusatory of anybody, but
- 7:06Speaker 1: we know the impact that Marvin Mims has in the
- 7:09Speaker 1: special teams game. Towards the second half of last season,
- 7:12Speaker 1: it felt like he really found his place within the
- 7:15Speaker 1: offense and now he's only getting six more snaps than
- 7:18Speaker 1: little Jordan Humphrey. Is Sean Payton a height ist? Is
- 7:22Speaker 1: he is he against anyone who's not six feet tall
- 7:24Speaker 1: at that position?
- 7:26Speaker 2: Well, if you're asking me personally, I guess i'd as
- 7:31Speaker 2: a short guy who is on his list from time
- 7:33Speaker 2: to time, I would say maybe that's possible. But I
- 7:37Speaker 2: think Mims is like the great fer you to triangle
- 7:41Speaker 2: mystery of the offense every year. I just watched him
- 7:45Speaker 2: make players in practice and games, and I can't figure out,
- 7:50Speaker 2: you know why you just don't try to get him
- 7:53Speaker 2: the ball more other than gadget stuff. Yeah, it's like
- 7:57Speaker 2: he sometimes I feel like he's punished sometimes when the
- 8:01Speaker 2: gadget stuff doesn't work and it's like it's his fault.
- 8:04Speaker 2: I don't think it's, you know, I think it was
- 8:06Speaker 2: called at a bad time, you know. I think the
- 8:08Speaker 2: guy is still an impactful player, and for a team
- 8:12Speaker 2: that honestly struggles compared to some others to find explosive moments,
- 8:19Speaker 2: I think he's a guy that could always provide him
- 8:22Speaker 2: because you cannot be that good a return man and
- 8:26Speaker 2: not have some ability to provide that to an offense.
- 8:30Speaker 2: I don't think, at least in my time looking.
- 8:32Speaker 5: At this, Leggie, I need to ask you if Sean
- 8:37Speaker 5: Payton is playing chess to our checkers, because I heard
- 8:40Speaker 5: something in an interview yesterday. John Elway was on with
- 8:43Speaker 5: Ronza Polo and Woody and Tom Green after the Horn
- 8:47Speaker 5: their podcast, and he was asked about Sean Payton, bow
- 8:51Speaker 5: Nicks and all that business, and he mentioned he's got
- 8:54Speaker 5: a very reliable source that all the screen passes we
- 8:58Speaker 5: saw on that Giants game where people can playing screen
- 9:00Speaker 5: screen screen, that Peyton may have done that by design
- 9:04Speaker 5: simply to tire out the defensive front of the Giants.
- 9:08Speaker 3: You're buying that.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Not really, But I've always heard coaches tell me through
- 9:15Speaker 2: the years that that's one of the by products even
- 9:17Speaker 2: if they don't work. You know, it's like it's like
- 9:20Speaker 2: when and you know, like play action works. Uh, even
- 9:24Speaker 2: if you don't run the ball well as a team,
- 9:27Speaker 2: you know it works anyway. So I think there is
- 9:30Speaker 2: something to that, and I've always been told that. But
- 9:33Speaker 2: I don't think he went into it thinking I'm gonna
- 9:36Speaker 2: call eleven screenplays and nine of them aren't gonna work,
- 9:40Speaker 2: just so I can tire people out and be down
- 9:43Speaker 2: by nineteen. You know that's pretty good chess. I'm gonna
- 9:48Speaker 2: I'm gonna be down by nineteen when the fourth quarter starts,
- 9:51Speaker 2: and then they'll be tired and we'll really get after.
- 9:54Speaker 3: I don't think i've shared that score.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Yeah we said. We said that earlier too, Like if
- 9:58Speaker 4: that's your game plan with it worked, but uh, little boy, right,
- 10:01Speaker 4: that's like.
- 10:02Speaker 2: I've had people who work for the Patriots tell me, oh,
- 10:05Speaker 2: we we knew Tom Brady was awesome, and I said, oh,
- 10:08Speaker 2: that's why he waited till the sixth round to take him,
- 10:11Speaker 2: because you know he wanted those other guys first.
- 10:14Speaker 4: Hey, Jeffrey, Uh, what do other people say about the Broncos?
- 10:18Speaker 4: Because we were talking earlier, I look at the Colts
- 10:20Speaker 4: in and the Patriots, and I said to the guys, man,
- 10:23Speaker 4: if I had to pick a team against those teams,
- 10:25Speaker 4: I would pick the Broncos if they're playing a heads
- 10:27Speaker 4: up today. That's my opinion. But how do people view
- 10:31Speaker 4: the Broncos? Do you think? From outside?
- 10:34Speaker 2: I think the folks I've talked to think right now,
- 10:39Speaker 2: the Rams and the Broncos defensively are on another, you know,
- 10:43Speaker 2: another level, from people. You know, if the Texans were
- 10:47Speaker 2: having a little better time on offense and Stroud wasn't injured,
- 10:50Speaker 2: you know their defense would be in that conversation too.
- 10:54Speaker 2: And I know it didn't end well here and he
- 10:56Speaker 2: took a lot of heat, but uh unprompted I get
- 11:01Speaker 2: more discussion these days at the strategic and timing awesomeness
- 11:08Speaker 2: of Vance Joseph right now, he is. He is on
- 11:11Speaker 2: the heater of heaters, and defensive coaches I know very
- 11:17Speaker 2: well who know Dvance are just basically saying he's calling
- 11:22Speaker 2: everything at the right time. You know, they won three
- 11:25Speaker 2: games without Cirtaan, I mean, and they didn't even give
- 11:28Speaker 2: up twenty points in any game without Cirtaan. He is
- 11:34Speaker 2: really when you talk to people, most people say he's
- 11:38Speaker 2: he's the guy viewing you know, the Broncos and that
- 11:43Speaker 2: if they could get any offense right now, you know
- 11:46Speaker 2: they they would be a Super Bowl favorite if their
- 11:48Speaker 2: offense was was even what it you know what it
- 11:53Speaker 2: was at the end of last season.
- 11:55Speaker 1: So how many de coordinators send a corner blitz on
- 11:58Speaker 1: third and eleven on the homes the game online.
- 12:01Speaker 2: And not just send it but design it so well
- 12:05Speaker 2: Mahomes is stunned. Yeah, I mean, tell me, really, what
- 12:09Speaker 2: hasn't Mahomes seen in a big game situation in their
- 12:15Speaker 2: run and he he was stunned at that play and
- 12:20Speaker 2: to save that all the way to the end of
- 12:22Speaker 2: the game, that's just that's just strategic. You know, we
- 12:27Speaker 2: often talk about, you know, how much different can coaches
- 12:30Speaker 2: really make, and it is talent ultimately that wins. But
- 12:34Speaker 2: that's an example of when you have talent, knowing what
- 12:37Speaker 2: to do with it is really something. But he you know,
- 12:40Speaker 2: and again I know, you know he was he was
- 12:42Speaker 2: fired here and people didn't like the ten year and
- 12:44Speaker 2: you know, people made fun of his press conferences. The
- 12:48Speaker 2: dude can coach ball, and he could coach ball then,
- 12:52Speaker 2: but he's got talent now and look what he can
- 12:54Speaker 2: do with it.
- 12:56Speaker 5: Jeffrey Kevin Stefanski just moments ago announced as conference that
- 13:00Speaker 5: Shador Sanders will start this week and he'll get first
- 13:03Speaker 5: team reps. How much of a difference do you think
- 13:05Speaker 5: they'll make I'll make for that young man.
- 13:08Speaker 2: It's it will make some good difference. I mean, there's
- 13:11Speaker 2: nothing tougher than not getting any reps uh in practice
- 13:16Speaker 2: and having to get chucked into a game. Uh, you know,
- 13:20Speaker 2: try and say, you know, basically save us. You know
- 13:23Speaker 2: with it. We didn't. We didn't help you during the week,
- 13:26Speaker 2: but get out there and save us. So I wasn't
- 13:28Speaker 2: shocked he looked the way he did uh last week,
- 13:32Speaker 2: so it should help him. But you know, whatever they do,
- 13:37Speaker 2: they have to convince that young guy to get the
- 13:39Speaker 2: ball out of his hands. I mean, that's NFL football.
- 13:42Speaker 2: You got to get it out of your hands and
- 13:46Speaker 2: you know, live for the next play. Get it. You know,
- 13:49Speaker 2: Peyton Manning told me a long time ago there are
- 13:52Speaker 2: times in the NFL a punt is not a bad play.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Just just get on uh legy.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Last question for you, is there all twenty twoage of
- 14:01Speaker 1: Carl Mecklenberg from back in the day?
- 14:04Speaker 2: Nor I have seen game film of Randy? Yes, I
- 14:11Speaker 2: have seen it, but it's not the quality we're used to.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Mosher has commanded everyone to watch the all twenty two
- 14:18Speaker 1: of Randy.
- 14:19Speaker 4: I've met game film from back in the day. They're
- 14:22Speaker 4: trying to convince me there's no game film from seventy seven,
- 14:24Speaker 4: said Trap. Well, okay, well whatever, But anyway, the point is, Jeff,
- 14:28Speaker 4: you made the point that look that people couldn't believe
- 14:31Speaker 4: that he had that moody tackles. Well, he was a
- 14:33Speaker 4: badass and he tackled everything that came his way. So
- 14:36Speaker 4: what do you want me to tell people? Right?
- 14:39Speaker 2: Well, you know, it seems like an odd argument in November.
- 14:44Speaker 4: I agree that these guys are idiots. I completely agree
- 14:48Speaker 4: with you.
- 14:48Speaker 2: I don't you guys, You guys surprise. You know, you're
- 14:52Speaker 2: like Mance. You bring a surprise at me once in
- 14:54Speaker 2: a while, and I'm you know, I'm in the pocket.
- 14:56Speaker 2: I'm just trying to handle my business.
- 14:58Speaker 1: It stemmed from Lakers fans are accusing the statians of
- 15:03Speaker 1: padding Jokic's assist numbers, and then we made the comparison,
- 15:08Speaker 1: or the boys made the comparison of That's like the
- 15:11Speaker 1: argument with Randy gratish Are and his tackles.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Well, the tackles are tough thing, because I will say
- 15:18Speaker 2: I have seen teams where guys have more tackles than
- 15:22Speaker 2: they had defensive plays on the field. So that's always
- 15:26Speaker 2: a little.
- 15:28Speaker 4: Tackles.
- 15:29Speaker 2: I mean, no, man, I have I have encountered in
- 15:32Speaker 2: my Hall of Fame research on guys, there were some
- 15:35Speaker 2: guys who were credited with more tackles than plays than snacks,
- 15:40Speaker 2: So I'm always a little confused by that. But maybe
- 15:43Speaker 2: they gave them the solo and the assist at the
- 15:45Speaker 2: same time. But I don't know. I feel like I've
- 15:47Speaker 2: watched enough of Nicole and to think that nobody's padding
- 15:50Speaker 2: his stats because they don't have to. And and how
- 15:54Speaker 2: about they call a foul like once in a while.
- 15:56Speaker 1: You know, it's really funny, Leggy, the more I think
- 15:58Speaker 1: about it, like, if you were somebody who was so
- 16:01Speaker 1: good at what you do, the only thing they can
- 16:03Speaker 1: accuse you of is statisticians helping you out their statisticians.
- 16:09Speaker 2: That means you're really good. Yeah. People used to say
- 16:11Speaker 2: it about ray Lewis all the time. The Ravens used
- 16:13Speaker 2: to take all kinds of heat for ray Lewis's tackle statistics.
- 16:18Speaker 2: And then I'd watch ray Lewis play and I'd say, well,
- 16:21Speaker 2: you know what, if they want to give him another
- 16:24Speaker 2: couple of assists, that those other three plays were probably
- 16:28Speaker 2: worth it.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Yeah, no kidding. Jeff Lakewald ESPN Gunwes every Thursday. Thank you, Leggy.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Thanks both say it
