Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: 106.7 Light FM. Cubby and Christine in the morning. A
- 0:03Speaker 1: very happy Friday. And he's in studio like we said
- 0:07Speaker 1: he would be. Legendary Yankee, Bernie Williams is back in
- 0:10Speaker 1: the house.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Good morning. Thank you so much.
- 0:13Speaker 1: A couple of years ago you were here, right?
- 0:14Speaker 3: Yes, yes, I was here. Yeah, I had a great experience.
- 0:17Speaker 3: You guys were great. And I'm so glad. I'm very
- 0:19Speaker 3: happy to see you guys again.
- 0:20Speaker 4: Yeah, we're happy to see you too.
- 0:22Speaker 1: So we have a lot to talk about. And before
- 0:25Speaker 1: we get to what you're really here for, we can't
- 0:28Speaker 1: not bring this up. So the Yankees season came to
- 0:33Speaker 1: an end a couple of nights ago. Give us your thoughts, please,
- 0:36Speaker 1: Bernie Williams.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, from a player standpoint, obviously very disappointed.
- 0:41Speaker 3: I know we cannot be more disappointed than the players themselves.
- 0:45Speaker 3: They worked so hard during the course of the season
- 0:48Speaker 3: to get to that moment and then just to be.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Swept by the Tampa Reds.
- 0:54Speaker 3: Bay race, you know, we got to give them credit.
- 0:57Speaker 3: You know, they have played, you know, great through the
- 1:00Speaker 3: whole year.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:01Speaker 3: I wish we had, you know, all our cylinders, you know, working,
- 1:04Speaker 3: you know, with judging and, you know, all our, you know, full,
- 1:07Speaker 3: you know, full force. But, you know, these games have
- 1:10Speaker 3: to be, you know, win or loss. And I think,
- 1:12Speaker 3: you know, it's going to give them a lot of
- 1:14Speaker 3: ammunition to work with, you know, for next year. I
- 1:16Speaker 3: think there's going to be a lot of changes. There
- 1:18Speaker 3: has to be a lot of changes.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Uh, happening.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Uh, but, uh, you know, Yankees are the Yankees. They'll
- 1:23Speaker 3: find a way to, you know, get back to, you know,
- 1:25Speaker 3: where they, they should be in my estimation. And, uh, yeah,
- 1:28Speaker 3: I mean, it was disappointed, but, uh, still, you know, baseball, uh, and, uh,
- 1:32Speaker 3: there's a lot more baseball to play and, uh, But
- 1:35Speaker 3: I'm really disappointed that the Yankees didn't make it any further.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Do you still feel like you play when they lose?
- 1:38Speaker 1: Do you still feel like as a player?
- 1:40Speaker 2: My heart starts racing, butterflies. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Even when fall started, the temperature started getting a little colder.
- 1:49Speaker 3: I started feeling like, oh, man, I don't fit on
- 1:53Speaker 3: it anymore. But, yeah, you always want to play. Your
- 1:59Speaker 3: mind is always getting you there, especially at this time
- 2:01Speaker 3: of the year. I feel very fortunate to be part
- 2:04Speaker 3: of those teams that won because it's so hard to do. So, yeah,
- 2:09Speaker 3: it is a process, and I think they're going to
- 2:10Speaker 3: be ready next year.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Well, thank you for your take. We had to address that.
- 2:13Speaker 4: I did want to ask your advice for the fans because,
- 2:15Speaker 4: you know, the way you said you were feeling it
- 2:17Speaker 4: in your heart, we have so many– Yankee fans, especially
- 2:19Speaker 4: in my family, and they take it really hard.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Absolutely, yeah. I feel for them. I'm one of them.
- 2:25Speaker 2: So what do we do?
- 2:27Speaker 4: You say just look forward to next year?
- 2:29Speaker 2: Well, yeah, it is one of those things.
- 2:31Speaker 3: I mean, baseball is a great game, great sport, and
- 2:35Speaker 3: I think it's good that we have this thing that
- 2:38Speaker 3: we can look forward to next year, what that's going
- 2:41Speaker 3: to bring. I know it's hard now to take because
- 2:44Speaker 3: we've put so much interest and so many resources into baseball,
- 2:47Speaker 3: and invested so much emotionally in this.
- 2:50Speaker 2: But there's always next year. Ask the Cubs. Yeah, that's true,
- 2:55Speaker 2: that's true.
- 2:56Speaker 3: At some point, the Red Sox would ask that many
- 3:00Speaker 3: years ago. But it's a great game, and I think
- 3:03Speaker 3: it keeps the fan base kind of motivated to see
- 3:06Speaker 3: what's going to happen next year. I think the true
- 3:07Speaker 3: Yankee fans are never going to leave the team. But
- 3:10Speaker 3: there's a lot of people, myself included, that are very,
- 3:13Speaker 3: very disappointed this morning.
- 3:15Speaker 4: Are you okay with... We just wanted to ask you,
- 3:17Speaker 4: you know how there's always a celebration when the Yanks
- 3:20Speaker 4: beat the Red Sox? They celebrate with champagne.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Well, every playoff round, there's champagne. Yes.
- 3:26Speaker 4: Is that the whammy, or is that okay?
- 3:30Speaker 1: Should you celebrate after every playoff round?
- 3:33Speaker 2: I think so. Or just save it to the end? No, no.
- 3:35Speaker 3: I think every step of the way, you should celebrate
- 3:37Speaker 3: because you never know if you're going to make it
- 3:38Speaker 3: to the next one.
- 3:39Speaker 2: So I think for players.
- 3:42Speaker 3: They start putting a lot of emotional investment, their bodies
- 3:46Speaker 3: going through the wringer from spring training and even before
- 3:50Speaker 3: in the offseason. So every level that you get, you
- 3:53Speaker 3: get this sort of thing, okay, we accomplished this, and
- 3:56Speaker 3: it should be celebrated. Not too much because the ultimate
- 3:59Speaker 3: goal is the ultimate goal, to go into the World Series.
- 4:02Speaker 3: But I think it should be celery because you never
- 4:04Speaker 3: know if you're going to get to the next level
- 4:06Speaker 3: or not.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Was it real champagne for you or the non-alcoholic? Because
- 4:08Speaker 1: I know they have both.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Do you remember? Yeah, well, that should give you a
- 4:13Speaker 2: clue into my response. No, I don't remember.
- 4:16Speaker 3: So it was real.
- 4:18Speaker 2: It must have been a real thing, yeah. All right.
- 4:21Speaker 4: Are you going to be popping champagne on Broadway? You're
- 4:23Speaker 4: making your Broadway debut in Buena Vista Social Club. Congratulations.
- 4:28Speaker 3: I am so excited. You know, it's in so many levels.
- 4:32Speaker 3: I grew up listening to the music that has been
- 4:34Speaker 3: played at the show for so many years. It just
- 4:37Speaker 3: brings me back to when I was a kid and
- 4:39Speaker 3: my mom used to put the radio on on Sunday
- 4:42Speaker 3: afternoons and we played like dominoes and we had.
- 4:45Speaker 2: A glass of wine.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Well, I couldn't because I was a child, but I
- 4:48Speaker 3: remember them having a nice glass of wine and listening
- 4:53Speaker 3: to that music. And when I first saw the show,
- 4:58Speaker 3: I started getting choked up. And the only thing that
- 5:01Speaker 3: in my mind was, you know, I wish my parents
- 5:03Speaker 3: were here to see this because they would have a
- 5:05Speaker 3: great time. So I am really invested in this, you know,
- 5:09Speaker 3: in their honor. There were the ones that put me
- 5:12Speaker 3: into baseball and music. And I would have loved for
- 5:16Speaker 3: them to see this moment. But I'm sure that they're
- 5:19Speaker 3: looking down and saying.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Hey, I told you. I told you he was going
- 5:22Speaker 2: to make it.
- 5:23Speaker 3: So I'm really excited about it. The opportunity came to me.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Out of nowhere, Luis Miranda, obviously, Lee Manuel's dad, we
- 5:31Speaker 3: have this great commonality. We grew up in the same
- 5:33Speaker 3: town in Puerto Rico. And I think, obviously, he is
- 5:39Speaker 3: the most famous Vega Alta resident that has sort of
- 5:45Speaker 3: made it. But he gave me a call maybe about
- 5:48Speaker 3: a few months ago. And he said to me, hey, Bernie,
- 5:53Speaker 3: we are... you know, producing this show that has been
- 5:56Speaker 3: very successful, the Buena Vista Social Club. And I think,
- 6:00Speaker 3: you know, they're thinking about you as being part of it.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Would you be, you know, would you be interested in it?
- 6:05Speaker 3: It's like, whoa, man, this is amazing. Do not threaten
- 6:07Speaker 3: me with a good time.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Are you kidding me? This is a great opportunity. It
- 6:11Speaker 2: was a quick yes. It was, yeah, the short answer
- 6:14Speaker 2: is a quick yes.
- 6:15Speaker 3: And it's just been, you know, so delightful to meet,
- 6:18Speaker 3: you know, the cast and, you know, the musicians and,
- 6:21Speaker 3: you know, the crew. It's been such an amazing experience.
- 6:25Speaker 1: You know, you've had two, actually you've had so many
- 6:27Speaker 1: different careers when you think about it. You've been under
- 6:29Speaker 1: pressure with baseball, now music. Which one has probably taught
- 6:32Speaker 1: you more about dealing with nerves?
- 6:35Speaker 2: I think probably baseball. And this is why.
- 6:39Speaker 3: I mean, in music, you practice, you put a lot
- 6:42Speaker 3: of work in. and you do the things that you
- 6:46Speaker 3: need to do to prepare, and you pretty much get
- 6:49Speaker 3: out what you put in. Baseball, on the other hand,
- 6:52Speaker 3: imagine all these players practicing and working out so hard,
- 6:58Speaker 3: and when you step on the plate and you go
- 7:00Speaker 3: into the game, you never know the outcome. You never
- 7:04Speaker 3: know what's going to happen. So that is that uncertainty
- 7:06Speaker 3: that is always there in the back of your mind.
- 7:09Speaker 3: It could be great, but it could be less than great.
- 7:12Speaker 3: So that's the part that really gives you the pressure
- 7:14Speaker 3: because as much as you can prepare, you can never
- 7:17Speaker 3: prepare to what's going to happen. So you really wish
- 7:21Speaker 3: that is the best outcome, but you never know. So
- 7:23Speaker 3: I think that puts a lot of extra pressure on
- 7:25Speaker 3: the players.
- 7:26Speaker 2: It's a good answer.
- 7:26Speaker 4: And also with theater, it's the same in the sense
- 7:29Speaker 4: that it's community. It's happening right there in that moment.
- 7:33Speaker 4: I think you're bonding with the other musicians, the audience.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:37Speaker 3: I mean, I would imagine that it would be a
- 7:39Speaker 3: little bit more pressure, but still... It's a situation where
- 7:45Speaker 3: you have to, you know, kind of rely on your
- 7:48Speaker 3: preparation in both disciplines and to let it go and
- 7:52Speaker 3: see what happens. But I think the outcome is a
- 7:55Speaker 3: little bit more predictable in theater or maybe music. I mean,
- 7:59Speaker 3: I don't have the experience of doing theater yet, but
- 8:01Speaker 3: I would presume that it's a little bit more controlled.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Than not even know what's going to happen.
- 8:07Speaker 3: You know, you step out on that plate, you know,
- 8:09Speaker 3: somebody throwing 99, 100 miles an hour, you can hit,
- 8:12Speaker 3: you know, the ball, you can strike out, you know,
- 8:14Speaker 3: but at the end of the day, you know, it's
- 8:16Speaker 3: about preparation and just trusting that and hoping for the
- 8:20Speaker 3: best outcome.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Bernie, if you could put.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Together your dream Yankees band using your former teammates. Who
- 8:27Speaker 1: gets the drums, guitars, and vocals?
- 8:30Speaker 2: Well, I will definitely be playing the guitar. Okay, I
- 8:32Speaker 2: figured that. You're an automatic. I'll probably get Paul O'Neill
- 8:35Speaker 2: to play drums. All right.
- 8:36Speaker 3: And the rest is going to be just a slew
- 8:38Speaker 3: of tambourines and bongos and percussion instruments because I don't
- 8:43Speaker 3: think anybody could have played anything else.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Good luck, guys. Like a kid today. Yeah, maybe, yeah.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Blues Clues, something like that. I don't know.
- 8:51Speaker 3: I love it, I love it.
- 8:51Speaker 4: But you're coming into the show, you're going to be
- 8:54Speaker 4: in October 22nd through the 29th.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Of November.
- 8:58Speaker 4: Yes, of November, exactly. So we have over a month
- 9:01Speaker 4: to see you, which is wonderful.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Yes.
- 9:03Speaker 4: And then that overlaps a little bit, right, with a
- 9:07Speaker 4: player from the Mets.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Yes, Candelita, Jose Iglesias, yes, which I have not had
- 9:12Speaker 3: the opportunity to meet yet.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Okay. I am so much looking forward to that. He's
- 9:16Speaker 2: doing great.
- 9:17Speaker 3: I mean, I've heard from the grapevine that he is
- 9:20Speaker 3: working so hard on his lines every day. And he's
- 9:23Speaker 3: doing amazing. He's having a great experience. So I'll definitely
- 9:26Speaker 3: be picking his brain on this.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Yeah, it's just as amazing to me because we were
- 9:30Speaker 4: talking about this before you came in. It's like you excel, obviously,
- 9:35Speaker 4: with baseball. And so we go, oh, maybe you're good
- 9:38Speaker 4: at basketball or football. No, you're an incredible guitar player.
- 9:42Speaker 4: Like these are two incredible gifts that you have in life.
- 9:46Speaker 4: that you're sharing with us, which we so enjoy.
- 9:48Speaker 2: I just feel blessed.
- 9:49Speaker 3: I had an opportunity to, I guess the good Lord
- 9:54Speaker 3: got me into a family that were very, very adamant
- 9:59Speaker 3: about racing us the right way. My mom was an educator.
- 10:02Speaker 3: I don't know if I mentioned that before. And my
- 10:04Speaker 3: dad was a merchant marine. So they had a great
- 10:06Speaker 3: combination of wildness and strictness to put us in the
- 10:10Speaker 3: right path. And they were the ones that really encouraged
- 10:13Speaker 3: me to be good at whatever I did. whether it
- 10:17Speaker 3: was baseball, whether it was music, you know, academics. I mean,
- 10:21Speaker 3: I have to give them a lot of credit for
- 10:24Speaker 3: where I am and who I am today.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Well, Bernie, we are so excited to see you soon.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Buena Vista Social Club on Broadway. Again, tell everybody the
- 10:31Speaker 1: dates you're going to be a part of this.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Yes, October 22nd through November 29th. Okay. Come and see me.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Check it out.
- 10:38Speaker 3: All right.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Got nothing else to do.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Baseball season's over. That's right. This is a great show.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Yes.
- 10:44Speaker 4: It's going to be wonderful to see you in it.
- 10:46Speaker 4: Thank you so much for coming by.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Thank you so much for having me. It's a great
- 10:49Speaker 3: honor to be here, and great to see you guys.
- 10:52Speaker 4: You too.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Bernie Williams! Yay!
