- 0:00Speaker 1: Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Could oppression,
- 0:04Speaker 1: or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril,
- 0:09Speaker 1: or sword? Romans 8.35 Dear Heavenly Father, In the midst
- 0:17Speaker 1: of festive lights, shared laughter, and the joy of giving,
- 0:22Speaker 1: we remember the unparalleled gift of your Son, Jesus. His
- 0:28Speaker 1: birth was was the beginning of a promise, a promise
- 0:32Speaker 1: that no circumstance or challenge can ever sever the bond
- 0:36Speaker 1: of love He offers. As carols fill the air and
- 0:41Speaker 1: we gather with loved ones, let us be reminded of
- 0:44Speaker 1: the unbreakable love of Christ, a love that chose a
- 0:49Speaker 1: humble manger, a love that endured the cross, and a
- 0:53Speaker 1: love that overcomes every obstacle. May the warmth of the season,
- 1:00Speaker 1: the joy of Christ's birth, and the depth of your
- 1:03Speaker 1: love remind us that we are never alone and nothing
- 1:09Speaker 1: can truly separate us from the embrace of Jesus. Thank you, Father,
- 1:15Speaker 1: for the gift of your love made manifest in the
- 1:18Speaker 1: birth of our Savior. May our Christmas celebrations be filled
- 1:24Speaker 1: with gratitude, joy, and the everlasting hope found in Christ.
- 1:30Speaker 1: In the loving name of Jesus, we pray.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Amen. Hear ye! By order of Caesar Augustus, all men
- 1:40Speaker 2: in their families are to be registered for a census
- 1:43Speaker 2: in the city of their family lineage. Failure to register
- 1:46Speaker 2: will result in punishment. This is the will of Rome.
- 1:51Speaker 3: His voice, steely and unemotional, echoed through the streets and alleys.
- 1:56Speaker 3: leaving a chill in the hearts of those who heard it.
- 1:59Speaker 3: His soldiers nailed the decree onto the doorpost of every home. Quirinius'
- 2:04Speaker 3: voice shouted through the city streets of Nazareth, where Joseph
- 2:07Speaker 3: was buying supplies for his workshop. The proclamation threw him
- 2:11Speaker 3: into a storm of uncertainty and worry. The house of David,
- 2:14Speaker 3: Joseph's lineage, was traced back to Bethlehem.
- 2:21Speaker 4: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:24Speaker 4: Bible in a Year podcast. Today's episode is a narrative
- 2:28Speaker 4: based on Luke chapter 2, verses 1 through 5. Although
- 2:33Speaker 4: the Bible doesn't describe the long journey Mary and Joseph
- 2:36Speaker 4: took from Nazareth to Bethlehem, we know that it must
- 2:40Speaker 4: have been wrought with challenges that tested their young marriage.
- 2:44Speaker 4: Romans chapter 8, verses 38 and 39 says, Who shall
- 2:49Speaker 4: separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress,
- 2:53Speaker 4: or persecution, or famine? or nakedness, or danger, or sword?
- 2:59Speaker 4: Every episode from now until the end of our series
- 3:02Speaker 4: will showcase a new struggle. Mary and Joseph must endure robberies, storms, rejection,
- 3:09Speaker 4: and conspiracies. Yet God's love and divine plan will cut
- 3:14Speaker 4: through the tragedy and turn it all into triumph. The
- 3:19Speaker 4: journey to Bethlehem is a poignant reminder of God's powerful
- 3:22Speaker 4: love a love willing to journey through hardship, risk, uncertainty,
- 3:28Speaker 4: and the darkest valleys to obey God's will. We can
- 3:32Speaker 4: imagine their challenges, the physical strain of the journey, societal
- 3:36Speaker 4: judgment due to Mary's mysterious pregnancy, and the anxiety of
- 3:40Speaker 4: a young couple about to become parents. On top of that,
- 3:44Speaker 4: there's the mounting pressure of knowing their child was the
- 3:47Speaker 4: promised Messiah. This episode will feature a new type of
- 3:54Speaker 4: challenge for Mary and Joseph. Trials, challenges, and hardships can
- 3:59Speaker 4: tear a relationship apart or strengthen it. Will this journey
- 4:04Speaker 4: solidify Mary and Joseph's bond or tear them apart? I'd
- 4:08Speaker 4: like to promise you this episode has a happy ending,
- 4:12Speaker 4: but it doesn't. Just like Mary and Joseph, we must
- 4:16Speaker 4: endure momentary trials before stepping into triumph. We must endure
- 4:22Speaker 4: momentary trials before stepping into triumph. Let's immerse ourselves now
- 4:27Speaker 4: in the story. In the end, we'll unpack Christmas themes
- 4:31Speaker 4: to strengthen our faith.
- 4:35Speaker 3: The streets of Nazareth, usually abuzz with laughter and trade,
- 4:39Speaker 3: grew anxious and frantic. Families huddled in corners to discuss
- 4:44Speaker 3: the journey ahead. Rumors and tales of treacherous roads rife
- 4:48Speaker 3: with robbers grew more terrifying by the day. Amidst the chaos,
- 4:53Speaker 3: Joseph waded through the marketplace, gathering the last of their
- 4:57Speaker 3: supplies for the journey ahead. He was no stranger to
- 5:00Speaker 3: the dangers of travel. As a stonemason, he often needed
- 5:04Speaker 3: to do business outside of Nazareth. But with Mary in
- 5:07Speaker 3: her delicate condition, the journey was a heavy burden on
- 5:10Speaker 3: his heart. They'd heard dark tales of bandits lurking in
- 5:14Speaker 3: the desert shadows, striking unsuspecting travellers and leaving them with nothing.
- 5:20Speaker 3: Joseph felt the weight of his responsibility to protect his
- 5:23Speaker 3: wife and the unborn child. Night after night, as they
- 5:27Speaker 3: prepared for the journey, Joseph would glance at the horizon
- 5:31Speaker 3: as if trying to discern what lay in wait. Mary,
- 5:34Speaker 3: watching him from their doorway, could see the furrows of
- 5:37Speaker 3: worry deepen on his brow. She was relieved that her
- 5:40Speaker 3: husband was strong and capable, but Mary bore a strength
- 5:44Speaker 3: Joseph lacked. She didn't share Joseph's fear, Instead, she had
- 5:49Speaker 3: a peace that God would provide. She was not naive
- 5:53Speaker 3: to think tragedy wasn't possible. But she also knew God
- 5:56Speaker 3: wouldn't begin this work if he did not intend on
- 5:59Speaker 3: completing it. One evening, as Twilight painted the horizon with
- 6:02Speaker 3: hues of gold and red, Mary approached her husband. He
- 6:06Speaker 3: was lost in thought, his gaze fixed on the distant roads.
- 6:10Speaker 3: His face was painted with a familiar look of worry.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Mary gently touched his shoulder and spoke softly.
- 6:16Speaker 1: What are you thinking about?
- 6:17Speaker 3: She asked, already knowing the answer. About tomorrow's journey. Joseph replied.
- 6:23Speaker 3: Going through the list in my head to make sure
- 6:25Speaker 3: we have everything we need. His face betrayed his words.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Joseph was consumed with doubt. Not in God, but in
- 6:32Speaker 3: his own ability to carry out his duty. Mary resisted
- 6:36Speaker 3: the urge to remind him that he didn't need to worry.
- 6:38Speaker 3: Telling somebody who was anxious to stop worrying was about
- 6:41Speaker 3: as useful as telling a dog not to eat from
- 6:43Speaker 3: the ball while it was eating. Instead, she leaned against
- 6:47Speaker 3: his shoulder and looked quietly at the horizon. Joseph leaned
- 6:50Speaker 3: his cheek closer to her head and sighed. I know
- 6:53Speaker 3: I shouldn't worry, but it's hard not to, especially with
- 6:57Speaker 3: what's at stake. She smiled, the kind of smile that
- 7:00Speaker 3: made Joseph's heart melt.
- 7:03Speaker 1: You have a protector's heart, Joseph. I love that about you.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Together we can face anything.
- 7:10Speaker 3: I am sure of it. Her words were reassuring at
- 7:12Speaker 3: the moment, but Joseph still felt a weight on his
- 7:15Speaker 3: shoulders growing heavier. They embarked early the following day. Joseph
- 7:20Speaker 3: packed the donkey tightly and hoisted Mary on top. She
- 7:24Speaker 3: smiled down at him and they left. Families, old and young,
- 7:28Speaker 3: streamed down the paths out of Nazareth, each one burdened
- 7:31Speaker 3: by the edict of Caesar. They all began in the
- 7:34Speaker 3: same direction, but eventually split down many roads to register
- 7:38Speaker 3: in the city of their heritage. The town of Nazareth
- 7:41Speaker 3: slowly receded into the distance, its familiar sights and sounds
- 7:45Speaker 3: replaced by the vastness of the road. As the days
- 7:48Speaker 3: wore on and the sun deceased, Mary and Joseph set
- 7:51Speaker 3: out camp under the vast canopy of the stars. The
- 7:54Speaker 3: heavens seemed to wink down at them, casting a silvery
- 7:57Speaker 3: glow over the landscape. While Mary rested, Joseph remained awake.
- 8:01Speaker 3: his eyes scanning the horizon for any sign of danger.
- 8:05Speaker 3: The weight of potential threats kept him vigilant. He refused
- 8:08Speaker 3: to sleep. Instead, he leaned back on a stone with
- 8:11Speaker 3: his hands firmly placed on his dagger. He refused to
- 8:15Speaker 3: let anything harm Mary or the child. I can't let
- 8:18Speaker 3: them down, Joseph sighed. He peered down at his bride.
- 8:22Speaker 3: She shivered from the cold, so Joseph removed his coat
- 8:25Speaker 3: and placed it on her. I love you, he whispered softly,
- 8:28Speaker 3: stroking her dark curls. The days melted into one another,
- 8:32Speaker 3: a blur of sunrises and sunsets. The vastness of the
- 8:36Speaker 3: desert stretched before them, its ever-changing peaks and valleys seeming
- 8:40Speaker 3: both majestic and menacing. With every step, the weight of
- 8:44Speaker 3: their journey grew, not in their bags, but in their hearts.
- 8:48Speaker 3: By day, the sun bore down on them, its rays unrelenting.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Mary's pregnancy sapped her of strength, but not of her hope.
- 8:57Speaker 3: As they walked, she would wax poetry about the Lord's
- 8:59Speaker 3: blessing on them. Her relentless hope gave Joseph enough to
- 9:02Speaker 3: keep walking beside her and the donkey. By night, the
- 9:06Speaker 3: desert came alive with its secrets, the sounds of woos
- 9:09Speaker 3: in the distance and the whispers of the wind. Joseph,
- 9:12Speaker 3: determined and ever watchful, grew wearier with each passing day.
- 9:16Speaker 3: The shadows of rumoured bandits played tricks on his mind,
- 9:20Speaker 3: making every rustling bush or distant noise a potential threat.
- 9:23Speaker 3: On the fourth evening... As the sapphire sky turned deep indigo,
- 9:27Speaker 3: Mary took his hand and saw the exhaustion on Joseph's face.
- 9:31Speaker 1: You've borne the weight of our journey for so long,
- 9:34Speaker 1: she said gently.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Rest now. Let me keep watch. There was a silent
- 9:38Speaker 3: battle in Joseph's eye, the protective husband against the weary traveler.
- 9:43Speaker 3: But in the end, fatigue won. He nodded, his eyelids heavy,
- 9:47Speaker 3: and lay down, wrapping himself in a blanket. Wake me
- 9:51Speaker 3: if you sense any danger, he murmured. his voice a
- 9:54Speaker 3: tired whisper. Mary nodded, her gaze fixed on the horizon,
- 9:58Speaker 3: ears attuned to every sound.' She hummed softly, a lullaby
- 10:03Speaker 3: she'd once heard long ago,' letting its gentle cadence soothe
- 10:07Speaker 3: Joseph into a deep sleep.' But the road, with its
- 10:10Speaker 3: myriad of mysteries, had its own plans.' As the night deepened,
- 10:15Speaker 3: two shadowy figures approached their campsite. Drawn by the soft
- 10:18Speaker 3: glow of the dying campfire, they moved stealthily, their intentions clear.
- 10:24Speaker 3: They began to pilfer through Mary and Joseph's belongings in
- 10:27Speaker 3: search of money and food. Engrossed in her thoughts and
- 10:30Speaker 3: nodding off from exhaustion, Mary didn't notice them until it
- 10:34Speaker 3: was too late. She turned to see them and held
- 10:37Speaker 3: back panic. Mary wasn't foolish enough to scream. She knew
- 10:41Speaker 3: that if she shouted for Joseph, they would kill him
- 10:43Speaker 3: before he could even reach his feet. Mary remained still,
- 10:47Speaker 3: pretending to sleep, occasionally looking over. Her heart was pounding.
- 10:52Speaker 3: She was paralyzed in an unwinnable situation as she watched
- 10:56Speaker 3: the robbers take the donkey with them. That is when
- 10:59Speaker 3: Mary finally chose to speak.
- 11:01Speaker 4: Joseph!
- 11:02Speaker 3: She whispered in an intense tone. Joseph rose frantically and
- 11:08Speaker 3: unsheathed his dagger. Hearing Joseph, the robbers quickened and ran
- 11:11Speaker 3: into the thick of the night. Joseph began to run
- 11:14Speaker 3: after them, mind racing with rage and weariness. However, just
- 11:19Speaker 3: as he was beginning to gain on the thieves, he
- 11:21Speaker 3: heard Mary's voice.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Joseph, where are you?
- 11:24Speaker 3: Joseph stopped. If he continued, something might happen to Mary.
- 11:28Speaker 3: He watched the dim figures disappear into the night. Joseph
- 11:31Speaker 3: turned back to camp. We've lost everything, he shouted, his
- 11:35Speaker 3: voice trembling with anger and regret. Mary said nothing. Silence
- 11:40Speaker 3: stretched between them, heavy and thick. Words unspoken hung in
- 11:44Speaker 3: the air as Joseph buried his face in his hands.
- 11:48Speaker 3: He was frustrated and boiling over with regret. Mary, trying
- 11:52Speaker 3: to bridge the gap between them, reached out a hand,
- 11:55Speaker 3: but Joseph pulled away, consumed by his internal turmoil. How
- 11:59Speaker 3: are we going to survive without any food or money?
- 12:02Speaker 3: How are you going to finish the journey without the donkey?
- 12:06Speaker 3: Joseph had sold all his tools to pay for these
- 12:08Speaker 3: supplies and the donkey. He had sacrificed so much, and
- 12:12Speaker 3: now it was all gone. He seethed in anger and disappointment.
- 12:17Speaker 3: Mary thought of defending herself, but chose to remain silent instead.
- 12:21Speaker 3: If Mary was good at anything, it was pondering things
- 12:24Speaker 3: in her heart and allowing deep emotions to be fully processed.
- 12:27Speaker 3: Joseph was uncharacteristically upset, so she gave him space and
- 12:31Speaker 3: returned to her blanket. Neither of them slept that night.
- 12:35Speaker 3: Joseph spent the rest of the night replaying the events
- 12:38Speaker 3: in his mind. The following day wore on in oppressive silence. Joseph,
- 12:43Speaker 3: grappling with his guilt, turned inward, while Mary, battling her
- 12:47Speaker 3: own regret, longed for the comforting embrace of her husband.
- 12:50Speaker 3: She wanted to hear him forgive her. She wanted them
- 12:53Speaker 3: to talk and embrace the trial as a team.
- 12:56Speaker 1: But instead.
- 12:57Speaker 3: They walked in silence. The desert around them seemed to
- 13:00Speaker 3: mirror their emotional state. Its vastness was a reflection of
- 13:04Speaker 3: the growing cousin between them. Their journey, which had started
- 13:08Speaker 3: with hope and faith, now felt heavy with despair and doubt.
- 13:12Speaker 3: But as with all nights, this too would pass, giving
- 13:16Speaker 3: way to a new dawn and the promise of redemption.
- 13:21Speaker 4: During a wedding ceremony, couples vowed to stick by each
- 13:24Speaker 4: other through thick and thin, Before God and witnesses, they
- 13:28Speaker 4: stare into each other's eyes and promise to love each other,
- 13:31Speaker 4: for better or worse, richer or poorer, and in sickness
- 13:34Speaker 4: or health. During the euphoria and bliss of a wedding,
- 13:39Speaker 4: it's easy to make those vows. But when hardships arise,
- 13:44Speaker 4: the foundation of a marriage is tested. Just as gold
- 13:48Speaker 4: is refined by fire, removing impurities, The trials faced in
- 13:53Speaker 4: a marriage can purify and strengthen the bond between spouses.
- 13:59Speaker 4: This requires intentional dedication, faith, mutual support, forgiveness, and, most
- 14:05Speaker 4: importantly of all, love. Today's episode brought new struggles for
- 14:11Speaker 4: Mary and Joseph. As if the journey wasn't hard enough,
- 14:15Speaker 4: they lost everything they had for the rest of their journey.
- 14:19Speaker 4: And we get the sense that Joseph blames Mary for it.
- 14:23Speaker 4: Yet we hold on to hope that Mary and Joseph's
- 14:26Speaker 4: relationship will be strengthened in the coming days. Our relationship
- 14:33Speaker 4: with God can be solidified and deepened in the hardest trials.
- 14:38Speaker 4: Our faith is tested when everything seems uncertain, chaotic, or challenging.
- 14:44Speaker 4: When we trust in God's promises and love, we find
- 14:48Speaker 4: hope that endures and love that strengthens us. Hope in
- 14:52Speaker 4: difficult circumstances is a theme that resonates deeply with all
- 14:56Speaker 4: of us. Life can be challenging. It can be unpredictable.
- 15:02Speaker 4: But amidst the storms, there's a beacon of hope we
- 15:05Speaker 4: can cling to. That hope is Jesus, the Savior born
- 15:10Speaker 4: in the manger in a little town called Bethlehem, after
- 15:14Speaker 4: a challenging journey by two faithful servants. In your own life,
- 15:21Speaker 4: you might be facing a difficult road right now. Remember
- 15:25Speaker 4: that God's promises stand firm. Just as he was with
- 15:30Speaker 4: Mary and Joseph, guiding them, he's with you. Cling to him.
- 15:35Speaker 4: Trust in his promises and let his enduring hope shine
- 15:39Speaker 4: in your circumstances. Remember that our God is greater than
- 15:44Speaker 4: any challenge we might face. The God who guided Mary
- 15:48Speaker 4: and Joseph to Bethlehem and raised Jesus from the dead
- 15:52Speaker 4: is the same God with you today. Let's trust him.
- 15:56Speaker 4: Let's rely on his promises. Let's allow his love to
- 16:00Speaker 4: be the anchor of our hope in any circumstance. In
- 16:06Speaker 4: our next story, Joseph and Mary will desperately search for supplies.
- 16:10Speaker 4: As they venture into a nearby city, Joseph's dedication to
- 16:14Speaker 4: Mary will require him to take even more risks. Join
- 16:17Speaker 4: us for our next episode, The Road to Bethlehem, Part 2.
