- 0:48[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, everybody, Brian Smith here with the Iron Team series and your daily influence.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_01]: Today, I'm going to jump on a topic that is a huge pet peeve of mine and ours at the Iron Team series.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_01]: And this is where sometimes I get into some really interesting conversations because
- 1:11[SPEAKER_01]: This play on words that we have that there's an eye in team often leads to people thinking that we are into individuality and we're into arrogance and into this word that I'm about to talk about boss.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_01]: I don't like the word boss and ever have like the word boss.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know where it comes from, maybe it had something to do with some guy that I worked for in high school, just not sure, but I have spent a lot of time in my career.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_01]: battling bosses in our clients' organizations in this boss mentality.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_01]: And when I see professionals posting about them being the boss and how they like being the boss and it's not done in just it's done with this mannerism.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_01]: that they are the be all and do all for their organizations.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_01]: What that is, to me, is insecurity and arrogance.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_01]: And by the way, arrogance is a form of insecurity in our world, anyhow.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_01]: Leaders who lean into calling themselves the boss, usually don't have a firm grip on their influence.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_01]: They're very insecure about that influence.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_01]: They have to uplift themselves all the time.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_01]: Have to lean into their leadership.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_01]: Often for fear, but the lack of trust in their teams, but why, why did you hire these people if you don't trust them?
- 2:37[SPEAKER_01]: Did you hire them to be their boss?
- 2:40[SPEAKER_01]: sometimes it's as simple as that.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_01]: And you have to ask yourself, if you believe in that verb, and you're in that boss mentality, if that's why do you have an inflated sense of control?
- 2:52[SPEAKER_01]: And what is that control actually doing?
- 2:55[SPEAKER_01]: Not just to you, but to your organization, in your ability as an organization to grow effectively.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_01]: We've seen this over and over.
- 3:03[SPEAKER_01]: Those who say it is the most have the least leadership ability.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_01]: Those that say that they give the most oftentimes don't.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_01]: They lean into the fact that maybe they're the owner.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_01]: They deserve a bit of respect for being the owner.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, the ones with the risk.
- 3:22[SPEAKER_01]: But your actions are where you get that respect.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_01]: Your actions are what define you as a leader.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_01]: especially not the word boss.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_01]: And there's a difference between positional power and earned influence.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_01]: The diversity of authority and influence is central to your work, and it's central to our work at the Iron Team series.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_01]: Bosses command, and yes, there are places where command is required, usually it's in things like the police,
- 3:54[SPEAKER_01]: the military, but not in capitalistic environments like business.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_01]: There might be directives that need to be given, leaders guide, leaders mentor, leaders elevate the people that work for them into a place where they themselves become leaders.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_01]: And that leader who elevates his team into that place is 100% secure in giving that elevation.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_01]: That's a leader.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_01]: A boss is somebody who wants to stay on top of people, keep people in that hierarchy.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_01]: One of the things I love about smart management is its flat.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_01]: Smart management isn't about hierarchy.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_01]: It's not about who has a title or who has a position.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_01]: It's about responsibility.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_01]: It's about the specific understanding and the measurement of that responsibility.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_01]: It's about what's attainable at every single individual's level.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_01]: And it's about applying that to everything we do for each other and for ourselves.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_01]: Our leadership journey can show that we have a positive lasting impact, or a negative one, is our high turnover, do we struggle connecting?
- 5:09[SPEAKER_01]: Do people come and go all the time in our environments?
- 5:12[SPEAKER_01]: When we're in the trenches with our team and we understand our team, not boss our team, understand them.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_01]: Work with them to overcome those challenges, uplift them when they're
- 5:28[SPEAKER_01]: their breaking points, not ask of them more than what should be asked for, not putting them in situations where expectations aren't set properly or they're set too high or too low.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_01]: We don't service people when we don't understand our team's capabilities and we drive them through a boss mentality.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_01]: Our goal is to reframe the entire leadership world.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_01]: and how we manage organizations.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_01]: We don't need more bosses.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_01]: We need accountable, present, and human leaders.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_01]: I want to replace the word boss with mentor, guide, partner.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_01]: If you have that word around you, try out a new word, try out a new way of leadership.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_01]: Names shouldn't hold way.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_01]: You should hold way.
- 6:22[SPEAKER_01]: Your name should hold way.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_01]: and it should hold away because how you show up, not because you're the boss, it should hold away because how you lead and how you influence and a positive and responsible way whenever your area of influence is.
- 6:38[SPEAKER_01]: It if people are following you because they have to, the strong reason if they follow you because you lead them.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_01]: you guide them, you support them.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_01]: That's what they want.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_01]: That will solve ultimately any issue you might have within your area of influence.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_01]: So the call to action today is think about how you introduce yourself, especially if you use the word boss.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_01]: If you lead a team, are you building them or are you bossing them?
- 7:06[SPEAKER_01]: Are you mentoring them?
- 7:07[SPEAKER_01]: Are you uplifting them?
- 7:09[SPEAKER_01]: Are you supporting them?
- 7:10[SPEAKER_01]: Are you giving them the trust they deserve?
- 7:13[SPEAKER_01]: Are you holding them accountable in a respectful way?
- 7:15[SPEAKER_01]: Do they have clarity and understanding of what the expectations are?
- 7:19[SPEAKER_01]: Or do you just demand and push without that guidance, without that understanding, without that clarity?
- 7:27[SPEAKER_01]: And do you set them up to fail or to not trust you over and over and over again?
- 7:33[SPEAKER_01]: Stop being a boss.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_01]: start being something better.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_01]: Be that high in team that everybody wants to work with.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_01]: The one that has positive and responsible influence and brings it to the table continuously.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_01]: And when you fall down and when you don't hold yourself up to that high standard, hold yourself accountable, work through that accountability and get to the other side and go right back to being responsible positive and intentional.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you for joining us.
- 8:01[SPEAKER_01]: I look forward to you joining us again on daily influence and I hope you have a great day.
