Speaker B: The option to override detonation procedure has now expired.

Speaker B: In P minus one minute. Five, hold, three, two, one. And welcome back, ladies and gentlemen, to another episode of Dangerous Laughter. I am your host, AJ Rice. Remember, our job here is to transform horror into humor, horror into humor. Sometimes horror hangs around a little bit longer than humor. But I just want to take time here this summer to give a big shout out. I even wore some of their colors. Their honor. Big shout out to the New York Knickerbockers, the NBA team from New York City. Not my producer's favorite team. He's a Nets fan because I guess he's an ABA guy from once upon a time. But the New York knicks, ending their 53 year drought, NBA championship drought, doing it with authority against the San Antonio spurs this summer. And I think I speak for Pope Leo and I'm a Catholic, so I'm going to speak for him. Okay? He could speak for Peter, who speaks for God and all the rest of it. I'm going to speak for Leo, who's a Villanova graduate. That, you know that team, that Knicks team, that is a special team. It is filled with Villanova champions, it is filled with Eagles fans, and it is filled with former players that. The Philadelphia 76ers, my team from 90 minutes south that got dispatched by the Knicks this summer in the playoffs, you know that they had drafted a bunch of their players, too. Plus Maurice Cheeks is on the bench. Mo Cheeks, who I think's got a couple championships now as a coach, but he also in 1983, won as a player for the Philadelphia 76ers, and he is in the hall of Fame as well. I've got a. A fun show for you today. I mean, I, you know, we're gonna, we're gonna, you know, crack them if you got them today, ladies and gentlemen. You know, I don't. I like most, most cowboys I meet. I like, I don't like them when they work for Jerry Jones. I don't like them when they wear blue and silver and white. I don't like them when we got to play them on Thanksgiving. But today's Cowboy I like. My next dangerous guest knows when it's not cutting time. He's no tenderfoot. He's a master of what I would like to call whiskey wisdom. Famous worldwide as the common sense cowboy. Loves his horse named Beamer and knows that the quickest way to double your money is to fold it and put it back in your pocket. He is a maverick, a dreamer he doesn't dilly dally Ladies and gentlemen, I give you a mustache that has its own zip code. Our frontier friend, Patrick Dorrinson, ladies and gentlemen. There he is. Deep bow from our cowboy from the range. Patrick. How's it going, sir?
• 4:23
Speaker A: I'll tell you, A.J. i'm as happy as a. As a flea in the doghouse. This is going to be a lot of fun today. And, you know, it's always nice when east meets west and we come together. And as we like to say, maybe we agree on some things, maybe we disagree, but it doesn't mean we can't crack open a beer every now and then.
• 4:42
Speaker B: Exactly. And Patrick's got this book out right here, all right? It's called the Common Sense Cowboys Guide to Life. Stories from the old guy at the end of the bar. And I love me an old guy at the end of the bar. Not because I want to go home with him, because I'm looking for, you know, the PEZ dispenser of wisdom. Wisdom. And, you know, and you and I were talking about this a couple weeks ago on the phone. Sometimes, you know, the old guy at the end of the bar may not, you know, be dressed like you sometimes. It could be an old Italian guy, you know, a wise guy. It could be a, you know, a rabbi. It could be, you know, somebody that you, you know, you can't judge a book by his cover. A lot of. A lot of people that have had very interesting lives generally will keep to themselves unless there's some way to sort of, you know, intervene and get some. Some pearls of wisdom out of them. Tell us, why did you write this book? Why now? And this really is kind of like a guidebook on how to, you know, grow up and be an adult, be a cool guy like you. Something I hope one day I'll be able to do.
• 5:50
Speaker A: Well, let's see. There's one way to grow up and get to where I am. That's just outlive everybody, you know, part of it.
• 5:59
Speaker B: You're not that old yet.
• 6:00
Speaker A: Yeah, well, you know, I'm. My dad made it till 99, so I'm still 26 years short of that, but I hope to get there. But, you know, I wrote it because I've been doing radio. I've done a lot of different things in my life. I've done politics. I've done business. You know, I've worked with cowboys before, and I. I Kind of said to myself, you know, I've got all this knowledge and wisdom. Maybe it's about time I started imparting it to a younger generation, mostly young men, but also young women in the sense of, I don't think they, they have anybody to share. Just good old fashioned, you know, life, you know, the old guy at the end of the bar. Because I've spent probably more than my fair share of time in saloons. And one of the things that I always noticed was there's usually one guy at the end of the bar and he's hollering at the tv, he's just making noise, nobody wants to talk to him. And every now and then the bartender will get him a drink just to shut him up. Now, at the other end of the bar, there's usually somebody who's a little quieter. And you know, he's always approachable. And it's not like you're going to go sit down and talk with him and all of a sudden, you know, he's going to, you know, start talking like Marcus Aurelius or one of them fancy Greeks or Romans. No, he's just going to tell you what his life experiences were and how you might learn something from what happened to him, good or bad. So to me, you know, I'm not into all this idea of here's, here's 12 things that you have to do every day. Or, you know, make sure you eat your Wheaties or make sure you eat broccoli, which I hate. You know, it's more about, you know, you're facing a problem, young man. Well, let me tell you how I face that problem and how I came about to fixing it. Because in life, in the end, whatever your problems are, you got to learn how to fix it. You know, my, my horse trainer, Trudy, always has told me when I would get frustrated trying to do something with Beamer and trying to get him to do something, you know, you get angry and you're angry at your horse. Well, you shouldn't be angry at your horse. You should be angry at yourself. And the only thing she would tell me was, fix it. And that's life. Fix it?
• 8:17
  Speaker B: Sure.
• 8:18
Speaker A: If you're facing a problem, fix it. If you want to look around for somebody to help you, first place you look is in the mirror. This is not hard. So I just wanted to get this all down before I maybe someday meet my maker. And I also wanted to help out a younger generation because to me, the next 250 years aren't about us. Old baby boomers and they're not about even millennials or anything. It's about the generation that a lot of them are still young kids. And a lot of them might be young adults, but it's their world. And if I had to give a speech right now to a bunch of college or high school graduates, you know what I'd tell them? Go forth and make mistakes, because that's how you're going to learn.
• 9:02
Speaker B: That's right, Joel. Milton Friedman's Creative Destruction. You gotta, gotta fail. In order to succeed, you have to fail, but most importantly, you have to try. And I'm, I'm someone that likes to collect mentors. I need a lot of them. Because a lot of times I am that guy at the end of the bar yapping at the screen. I'm a professional wise ass from Philadelphia. It's in the water. We, you know, plus, I'm Irish, which means I never shut up. I've got the gift of gab, or crack, as they call it. Not the kind Hunter Biden likes, but I believe it's spelled C R A I C, which is basically a Gaelic term for, you know, never, never knows how to shut the hell up. Right? And just. Yes, but I think we do have a mentor shortage. I think we have an old wise man shortage. And I don't care if it's, it's Uncle Luigi or it's Uncle Patrick, whether you're in, you know, South Philadelphia or you're in St. George, Utah, I think you have generations now. And look, I'm a geriatric millennial, right? I'm about as old as it could be as a millennial, you know, and sometimes I find myself, even with this baby face of mine saying, ah, the kids do this and the kids do that, you know, but as I, as you know, you've been in many saloons, as you just said, the liver never forgets. So, you know, I may look one way, but my liver is as old as Moses. And I'll. I'll tell you, I think because of these freaking devices here, these devices are becoming the mentors. These devices are becoming the places where they think wisdom is being dispensed from. Right.
• 10:52
  Speaker A: Yeah.
• 10:54
Speaker B: No, go ahead. What do you, what do you think about that?
• 10:56
Speaker A: Yeah, well, you know, mentorship is something that older guys got to be willing to do. You know, you get to a certain point in your life and maybe you decide, well, me and the Mrs. Are going to go and sell the house and move to a 55 and over community and play pickleball. And you Know, just enjoy ourselves and, you know.
• 11:22
  Speaker B: Right.
• 11:22
Speaker A: And they've earned it. And if that's what they choose to do, God bless them. But, you know, something, to me, that's kind of like sitting around waiting to get that tap on the shoulder from the Lord. And I'm more of the mind that I want to go out and meet young people. I want to laugh with them. I want to see them in their natural habitat, if you will, but also be able to, when they have a question, to answer it. And not to say, get off my lawn, but why don't you come up here on the porch and let's have a chat and also dispense with what you've learned, good or bad. I think the problem is, you know, we've got a lot of people in this country on both sides of the aisle, and there's a. There's this pessimistic attitude. And, you know, it's like the story of the father that had two boys. One was a pessimist and one was an optimist. And on Christmas, he filled the pessimist room with all kinds of toys, and the only thing both boys wanted was a pony. So the pessimist boy, he starts going, well, you know, I didn't get what I wanted. I really wanted a pony. Even though the room's full of stuff. The optimist boy, he walks in his room and it's full of horseshit. He dives in, starts digging through it. He goes, with all this horseshit, there's got to be a pony in here somewhere, right? And to me, let's look for the pony and let's admit the bad stuff that we have, but let's not dwell on that. Let's say, you know something. Look where we live. Look what's going on right now. I feel so privileged to have made it to the 250th birthday of this country. It is a great honor, especially when I was born, Eisenhower was president. But, you know, to me, it's that. It's that uplifting honesty. It's that uplifting optimism that we should have about our country. Look, dang Europeans are coming to this country. They're falling in love with it. They're falling in love with going to the South. They're taking road trips. They're doing stuff that we take for granted. And look at that. The world has come to us. On our 250th birthday, we are celebrating like, you know, hell won't have it. And we're not even to the fourth yet. And that's what we should be saying. You know, it's kind of sad watching that, you know, the counter demonstration to the President's wonderful birthday party. And it is kind of sad to watch a bunch of old baby boomers trying to sing, first of all. And. And the worst thing to me is AJ Is to watch them clumsily try and reclaim the symbols of patriotism. You know, at that counter demonstration or whatever you want to call it, they had an American flag on a screen, and it just shows you they're uncomfortable with it because they spent so many years against it. And I don't feel bad towards them, I don't feel angry towards them. I feel kind of sorry for them, kind of sad to listen to Bette Midler, who was a wonderful singer in her day, sound like a croaking frog.
• 14:37
Speaker B: That's right. That's what America needs more Bette Midler. She is wife material, I gotta tell you. We're talking to Patrick Dornsen, author of the Common Sense Cowboys Guide to Life. I will tell you, misery does love company. And in particular, generally the Democrat Party, not all of them, but generally the Democrat party, at least in the modern era, tries to traffic. They traffic and basically trickle down misery. Kamala can claim hope, Obama can claim hope and change. They do pay big time, you know, marketing companies to concoct these things. But for the most part, in order for them to keep power, and there are some aspects, you know, some segments of the right that does this too, is that they have to keep a victim class. They have to make constantly tell you that this isn't good enough. This doesn't pass the purity test. You're miserable. Here's why. This is. Who did that to you? You can't do it on your own. There's a lot of that. You know, there's people on the right, you know who you are. There's about six of them. They're all talking to each other. Everybody thinks they have a big audience because they're just talking to each other. And you know, Trump, Trump isn't 100% doing this and he's not 100% doing that. And he, he failed this test and that purity test, and he didn't give us enough of this. And, you know, D Day's taking too long. Tell Eisenhower, Eisenhower to hurry up. Tell John Marshall to hurry up. Tell Patton and Montgomery and MacArthur to hurry up. I gotta watch Netflix later. I gotta move on. So that's what some of these people do. You know, no president from George Washington to Donald Trump is going to pass everyone's purity test. Right. But when you have, when you, when you have that kind of incoming though, to these young Gen Z and younger and it's just bombarding them with an algorithm through their phone, you get very, a very confused generation on gender, on what they're allowed to say, what they're allowed to eat. You know, I can't talk this way, can't dress this way, whatever the hell it is. Right?
• 16:53
Speaker A: Yeah. But you know something? Because unfortunately, and this is not, you know, again, I like what you were just saying, but they're on both sides and it's this idea that we're going to out argue each other and we're going to treat the future as some kind of zero sum game where one side completely wins and one side completely loses.
• 17:16
  Speaker B: That's right.
• 17:16
Speaker A: You know, the America I grew up in is the America that says, you know something, we both wave the flag, we, we both believe in our country. And guess what? We have a different approach of how we're gonna fix the problems. So let's talk about that and let's get back to this idea that we're all Americans, we all believe in the country. And I know there's people on both sides who, they're just, they're so cynical, they're angry. They don't even know what they're angry about. And they're foisting this on a bunch of kids. And to me, that's one of the worst things that ever happened. And as a baby boomer, I can say this. We took over the education system many years ago, and there was this movement to denigrate America and America's at fault for everything. And the Vietnam War, I remember the marches, oh, we're horrible. We're this or that. But deep down inside, if you can't believe in this wonderful place, if you can't believe in what we're capable of, then I really do feel sorry for you. And it also reminds me of something that Vince Lombardi once said when he first went to the Green Bay packers. And you know, they were kind of a bunch of guys, you know, they kind of showed up and he brought in discipline.
• 18:33
  Speaker B: Right.
• 18:33
Speaker A: One of the things he told them was, and I think this is so important for America today and for these young people to listen to, you're never going to achieve perfection. Right? But in the pursuit of perfection, you just might catch excellence. And that is what America is. We want to be the best, we want to win. When we're playing games, it's not a Question. We don't like ties. We don't like this idea that everybody gets a trophy. We know that competition is tough. We want to see ourselves compete. We want to be able to congratulate the other guy when they win and try harder to win the next time. These are American virtues. These are the things that these poor kids haven't been taught, and they've been taught that their country is horrible. Now, that's going to take us a lot to get to a point where we can get the next generation to understand what we're doing. And I think we're going to get there. I really do. Some of the things that are out there makes me feel real good. Young men are getting back into churches. Young men are trying to get out of this doldrums that they've been put into. And young women want to raise families again. Again. My optimism is soaring. And that's why I want to get out there and encourage the hell out of all these kids, because they're the future. And we can all argue ourselves to death, but eventually we're going to be one place in a pine box in the ground. And it's going to be their world that they're going to have to have to do, and their world that they're going to have to fix, and they're going to have to face their own problems. So I like to tell them, you're going to have to learn how to saddle your own horse at some point. Better try now.
• 20:12
Speaker B: That's right. The Common Sense Cowboys Guide to Life Stories from the old guy at the end of the bar. I mean, I, you know, I led the show talking about the NBA championship that happened this summer. You know, the San Antonio spurs walked off the court without shaking hands when they lost. They are led by someone. I think the NBA is trying to make the face of the league now that LeBron is still playing in a wheelchair. And, you know, he's a guy. I've been told he's.
• 20:43
  Speaker A: He, he's.
• 20:44
  Speaker B: He's not a Christian. I guess he's.
• 20:47
  Speaker A: He's.
• 20:47
Speaker B: I guess he's. Comes from some sort of Muslim tradition. He's a French citizen. I mean, he's got natural gifts. His name is Wembiama, called Wemby for short. But he's only 22, made it to the finals. You know, he's young. He's like a puppy, but he's, you know, 7 foot 6 or something. Looks like Gumby can pretty much dunk the basketball without jumping. And he was beaten. He was beaten you know, like David and Goliath by, you know, a guy that's an undersized point guard, somebody that, yeah, he won a national. He won two national championships at Villanova, you know, and, and, but he, he was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks and then traded basically for a bag of beans. Ended up in New York and dropped 45 points in the closeout game against the 7 foot 6 giant, who, you know, had played with some dirty moves and this and that. I mean, look, I like the fact the NBA's got international players. I do. It makes everyone step up their game. In fact, a lot of the MVPs recently, Embiid Joker, Giannis, they're from Greece and Cameroon and this place, in that place. It's good, it's good. But, you know, there are some people out there, you know, you get a lot of money early. You know, these young athletes, you've got people doing everything for you. You know, whether it's publicists and managers and assistants and everything else. But, you know, on the biggest stage, you need to be able to show humility even when you lose, when you fail, right? And that starts by doing it not on the biggest stage, okay? By holding the door for a grandmother who's walking out of Walmart. So if you can't do it on the smallest stage, you're not going to do it on the biggest stage.
• 22:44
Speaker A: You can't. And, I don't know, it seems to bad sportsmanship seems to be the norm nowadays, you know, not the. Not what it should be. I mean, I did see one story today that made me feel real good. I guess Jameis Winston was at the Dallas game, Cowboys Stadium, and he was helping some fans clean up after the game, which is that in and of itself, it must have been Europeans. But the idea that he would do something like that, it's that. It's that story you hear from the old days of, you know, ball players, you know, who didn't make much back then. You know, helping some family and not wanting credit for it. You don't have to get credit for things that are good or things that you do that are good. If you want credit for it, you're not doing it for the right reasons or because your publicist tells you, hey, do this and you'll get a lot of accolades. It's that little thing you do. It's that, you know, when, when I'm at the donut shop, right, a bunch of young girls work at this donut shop and they work their tails off. And when I go in there, real early, about 6:30 in the morning sometimes, you know, they're just so cheerful and they're, you know, I don't know their station in life. I just know they're working their butts off at 6:30 and they've probably been there since 5.
• 24:04
  Speaker B: Right.
• 24:04
Speaker A: And if that tip jar is empty, they're getting a five or a $10 bill. First of all, I'm at the age where I don't give a crap anymore. I'm just going to give it away. But the other point is it makes them smile. Puts a, put a smile on somebody's face. It doesn't always have to be about money. Sometimes it's just about they do a good job, you know, thank you for what a wonderful job you did. Sure. Kindness is something we got to put out there again. All the things that I've learned in my life, they all come down to the cowboy way. And it's something that my mother instilled in me. You know, do unto others the golden rule. All the simple things that now seem to have been forgotten. So part of my message to my fellow Americans is remember the small things. Remember each other. Look to the gal on your left or the guy on your right and remember, we're all in this together, folks. And what a better time to instill that in young people, starting right now, as we begin the next 250 years. That's what I want to do with them. I want to spend the rest of my days. I want to watch them grow. I want to be the old cowboy who's watching them, you know, trying to break that horse, who's bucking and everything else, because that's their world. They're going to have to live it. But I want to be that old guy at the outside that tells him, you know, you know, sit deep in your seat, you know, tighten up that cinch. But I can't do it for him. I can't do it for him. But we certainly, as older folks, we can do it and really make this country the best place we can do. Because the whole point of when you get old is you're supposed to say to yourself, I want to leave my country and the world a little better than I found it. And we seem to have forgotten that.
• 25:56
Speaker B: We are talking to the cowboy correspondent for Dangerous Laughter today, Patrick Dorrinsen, author of the Common Sense Cowboys Guide to Life. We're going to take a quick break. More with Patrick. On the other side, women's rights champion

Speaker B: And now please enjoy another elegant celebrity endorsement of dangerous laughter with A.J.
• 27:04
Speaker A: rice. Hey, how's it going?
• 27:06
Speaker B: This is John Gruden, the old coach,
• 27:08
Speaker A: just getting started here. It's an early morning in Las Vegas right now. The streets are quiet out there, but
• 27:15
Speaker B: last night they were rocking.
• 27:17
Speaker A: They were all talking about A.J. rice. A.J. rice is live.
• 27:22
Speaker B: I love this guy, man. This is your moment right now.
• 27:27
Speaker A: If you're gonna host your own podcast, you gotta be a nightmare for the opposing team.
• 27:32
Speaker B: And I'm into nightmares. I mean, I want you to live rent free inside the enemy's head. Byob.
• 27:41
Speaker A: Be your own blocker. Hustle, hustle, hustle. Rice flip right, double X jet 36,
• 27:48
Speaker B: counter naked Waglet 7X quarter. I mean, I want you to be
• 27:52
  Speaker A: a player, not a spectator.
• 27:54
Speaker B: Rice, let the competition come.
• 27:57
Speaker A: Rice, bring it on. Be the franchise quarterback.
• 28:01
  Speaker B: Rice.
• 28:02
Speaker A: You got a motor, kid. Everybody sees it right now. Hit the gas and run these guys over.
• 28:09
Speaker B: And don't forget Spider2y banana execution.
• 28:13
Speaker A: Congratulations, you've been diagnosed with dangerous laughter.
• 28:18
Speaker B: Now get out there and win. Love you, man. This endorsement has been brought to you
• 28:24
Speaker A: by collapsing standards everywhere. And now back to Dangerous Laughter. The management of this station are clueless. You're listening to Dangerous Laughter with AJ Rice on the Publius Media Network.
• 28:44
Speaker B: And we are back. I am A.J. rice. This is Dangerous Laughter. Remember, there is no substitute for perfectly timed derision. Sometimes, you know, you gotta. You gotta bring shame back. I like Dustin some shame off. We need to bring mentors back. But sometimes when people are shameless, you gotta. You gotta spell it out for them, right? You gotta bring that back. I am talking with Patrick Dorrinson, my good friend, my frontier friend, author of the new book, the Common Sense Cowboys Guide to Life. Everybody's got to get this right here, right? Patrick, great to have you here. I gotta. I gotta tell you, I've been. I've been looking forward to this. Now, the subtitle of the book is Stories from the Old Guy at the End of the Bar. So I guess one of the things I want to ask you is. And you. When you're dealing with cowboys in a bar, sometimes they're in a Group, sometimes they're alone. Can you tell the type of. Of cowboy. What type of cowboy someone is by the drink that they're drinking? Now we've, we've seen some stuff on like. I've seen some shots on some. Some scenes from like Landman and Yellowstone and different things. People are drinking different things and you know, obviously creative writers are there to make sure everything lines up okay. But I've got an old school Miller Light commercial here that I want to play for you and then get your reaction on the other side.
• 30:11
Speaker A: I can tell a real cowboy from the drugstore kind clean across Texas, the way he wears his hattle to you and the beer that you drink. So.
• 30:20
  Speaker B: Sure.
• 30:20
Speaker A: For our giveaway too.
• 30:22
Speaker B: A lot of us drink light beer from Miller.
• 30:24
Speaker A: We love the taste, but we surely appreciate that it's got a fair less calories than the regular kind. You see, you don't want to be filled up when you're out there punching doggies. Ain't that right, cowboy? I didn't punch that doggy like beer from Miller. Everything you always wanted in a beer unless. Yeah, I remember that one.
• 30:43
Speaker B: You remember that one? And that was. That was Billy Martin. That was Billy Martin, the Yankees. The former Yankees and Oakland Athletics manager.
• 30:51
  Speaker A: Yeah, right.
• 30:52
Speaker B: Tell everybody what a doggy is because people don't know what a doggie is.
• 30:56
Speaker A: Doggies just stray cow out there punching doggies, though.
• 31:01
Speaker B: What does that term mean?
• 31:03
Speaker A: Well, you're a cow puncher, you know, it just means you're out working cows.
• 31:08
  Speaker B: Right, right.
• 31:09
Speaker A: You know, that's. But you know, as far as what real cowboys drink, I mean, a lot of rodeos are sponsored by Coors Light.
• 31:17
  Speaker B: Sure.
• 31:18
Speaker A: You know, I don't. Most of the guys I know, yeah, they might drink some beer and stuff like that. I don't know how many of them are really hard whiskey drinkers. You know, if you're a working cow, you're getting up in the morning, you're doing work, I don't think you want to have a whiskey hangover. And you know, on Yellowstone and Landman, you know, I think in some ways they're trying to show the hardness and the toughness. Now granted, those guys out and those guys out in the oil fields, you know, the roughnecks, those are some pretty tough hombres. Right. But you know, one of the things that about cowboys is there's a calm nature to most of them. The ones that I been around and worked with, you know, they won't say. They don't say a lot. And when they do you better listen because it's important. And, you know, while those shows are very exciting, I wish there were some more shows, just about, you know, regular families out there, because, you know, you know, let's face it, you know, on Yellowstone, he's a big family ranch. It's kind of like, you know, back when I was a kid, there's a show called Bonanza with the Cartwright.
• 32:38
  Speaker B: Oh, yeah.
• 32:39
Speaker A: And, and the Cartwrights, you know, were kind of like Yellowstone, only without all the sexy women.
• 32:45
  Speaker B: Right.
• 32:46
Speaker A: So, you know, but. But there, but there's a. It's a hard life out there, especially for someone who's, you know, has a smaller spread. You know, they've worked their tails off to build up their herd. So I really wish we'd show more of that because the true nature of the American cowboy hasn't changed in a long, long, long time. And that there's that idea that, you know, how when you're working with them, especially when you're new to it, you have to understand how they're reacting to situations. And if you don't mind, I'll tell you a quick story about a time when, you know, I've been out doing it for a few years, and we were gonna brand some calves, and the calves hadn't. They should have been branded like a. Almost a month before, but because of weather, they. We couldn't get out there to do it. So my friend called me on the phone. She goes, hey, we're gonna finally brand the rest of them calves. You want to come up, come up to Idaho? And I, I said, yeah, sure. So I went up and, well, you can imagine another month's worth of growth. They got a little bigger. And I was in the branding pit where the branding irons are. And then you also have a guy with a knife and his job is to castrate him. And then you also have somebody who vaccinates them. Well, I had the vaccinating needles and a guy goes, and he, he grabs a calf and he starts to drag it towards the fire, as they say. And it just stepped. It got right on his feet, stepped right out of that rope and came right for me. And that cow was coming hell bent for election. And I said, I'm gonna die. And it ran. It ran right up my body with little hoof prints and ran and knocked me over. And then as I rolled and turned around, I saw the calf's mother coming straight for me. Because what you do is you separate the mamas from the babies, and once they get branded, they go Back to their mamas. Well, somebody had let the mama get through and she's coming at me like, you know, the midnight special. And I thought, I'm going to die from this direction. And all of a sudden, in between me and that mama cow was a set of horse legs. And a cowboy got between the two of us and shoot her away. Well, after they. Everybody's quiet and then I kind of got to my feet and I had dirt and mud on my face and everything else. Once they all saw that, they started laughing and you know, I got a little ticked. I said, what are you laughing at? Right? And it was. My pride was hurt. And the old guy Vaughn comes up to me and he says, they're not laughing at you. He said, they're laughing with you because it's happened to each one of us. Maybe not the exact same thing, but something like that happened, you know, he says, welcome to the club. And from then on I understood if, because it was a moment of potential danger that turned into laughter.
• 35:47
  Speaker B: Sure.
• 35:48
Speaker A: And when you work with people like that, and I don't care whether you're a coal miner or whatever, your profession or job out there, there are those moments and that bonds you together. And that's kind of what to me, what America is, you know, that those kind of instances we know, we get, oh my gosh, and then we laugh together and then we all go, you've just been initiated into the club. You've just become, you know, a better American. And to me, sure, we gotta do more. We should be laughing our asses off every day at some of the silly stuff that goes on out there. Yeah, maybe, maybe we'd feel a little better about ourselves and stop all this nonsense that everything is so dad gum serious that we gotta start hollering at each other.
• 36:35
Speaker B: Right. And that, I mean, it sounds like you had 8 year old cowboy baptism there as you hit the ground doing.
• 36:41
  Speaker A: Yeah.
• 36:42
Speaker B: Doing castrations. And, and for those of you hopping on Amazon, speaking of castrations, his Patrick's first book, It's Not Cut in Time America. This is a metaphor for what he was just talking about. And you wrote this in between the 08 election, right after the Tea Party takeover in 2010. And then you got to see, you know, Mitt Romney and then the Trump era and four years of the cadaver of Joe Biden between that book and this book. So you took some time off, you know, because you're working as a cowboy and you know, I mean, the, the country has come a long way since this, since this Book. I mean, we, we are in a place where, you know, at least socially, you know, it's. Sometimes it's hard for people to make choices. You were just talking about sort of experiences where we're all sort of experiencing the same thing. I, I use a phrase all the time that sometimes if you're, you're given too many choices, you choose nothing. And there seems to be, I mean, you could maybe say the super bowl, you know, seems to be less and less things that we're all doing together because we can all go do something else. A lot of the media didn't want to take a part in or cover or pay attention to the UFC fight that happened at the White House. There are people that don't want to participate in, you know, any type of anything that involves America 250 because they're associating America with Trump. Personally. There's a lot of that that has gone on this summer. I always think about one of the reasons I did this show because I see what go, what goes on on other shows, right, left and otherwise. I think about, like, the loss of, of Limbaugh and I think about the fact that even with music and entertainment, there's nothing we all agree on. Like, there is no Johnny Carson that we all agree on. There is no Elvis that we all agree on. Now, granted, Limbaugh is a conservative figure, mainly a Republican figure, but he was a figure that at least on the right really didn't have any enemies. We all kind of agreed, whether it's the old Pat Buchanan wing or the National Review people or the defense hawks or the libertarians, most people agreed that Rush was, you know, an American original and, you know, brought conservatism and mainstreamed it. So talk to me a little bit about, you know, the way the, the way political parties sort of talk to their voters. I've got something I'm going to play for you here. I want to hear your reaction first because there does seem to be a deficit in, in things that we all agree on where we're all, we all can come together on. I'm a man.
• 39:54
  Speaker A: I'm a man. I'm a man man. And I'm man enough.
• 39:58
Speaker B: I'm man enough to enjoy a barrel proof bourbon meat. Man enough to cook my steak rare,
• 40:03
Speaker A: man enough to deadlift 500 then braid the out of my daughter's hair.
• 40:07
Speaker B: You think I'm afraid to rebuild a carburetor? I eat carburetors for breakfast.
• 40:10
Speaker A: I ain't afraid of bears. That's what bear hugs are. For I'll tell you another thing. I sure as shit am not afraid of women.
• 40:17
Speaker B: I'm not afraid of women. I'm not afraid of women.
• 40:20
Speaker A: They want to control their bodies. I say go for it. They want to use IVF to start a family. I'm not afraid of families. They want to be childless. Cat ladies have all the cats you want. Woman wants to be president. Well, I hope she has the guts
• 40:31
Speaker B: to look me right in the eye and accept my full throated endorsement.
• 40:34
Speaker A: Because I'm man enough to support women. Man enough to know what kind of donuts I like. Man enough to admit I'm lost even when I refuse to ask for directions.
• 40:42
Speaker B: Man enough to not ban young women

• 40:48

• 40:52
Speaker B: I'm man enough to be emotional in front of my wife, in front of

Speaker A: my kids, in front of my horse.
• 40:58
Speaker B: I'm man enough to tell you that I cry at love. Actually.
• 41:00
Speaker A: Goodwill hunting, west side Story. That and Predator. And I'm sick of so called men domineering, belittling and controlling women just so they can feel more powerful.
• 41:10
Speaker B: That's not how my mama raised me.
• 41:12
Speaker A: I love women. I love women who support their families. Women who decide not to have families. Women who take charge. And I'm man enough to help them win.
• 41:21
Speaker B: Wow. Okay, so I wasn't ready for that video yet, Chris, but I appreciate it. So that was an ad that the Harris Waltz campaign ran in the 2024 because they had. They're having a problem with men. They're having a problem with male voters and not just white ones, Hispanic, black, Asian, across the board. They thought that if they invented that ad that you just saw, which is the sequel to Brokeback Mountain, by the way, that they were going to somehow get guys like you, Patrick, or others, whether they're in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia or across the Great Plains, to vote for them. What's your take on that? On that? On that ad? You know, there's. I'm sure there's a musical version of that on its way.
• 42:10
Speaker A: Well, first of all, you know, it's. It tries to give you all these wonderful things and still be tough. They still don't understand men. They don't understand a ranch father braiding his little girl's hair. Why does he do it? Not because he has to prove anything to anybody. Her hair needs braiding. And by the way, she might be working alongside him that day out on the range. You know what I mean? Yes, men are men. If, if one, I don't like this idea. We're gonna, let's stop splitting the genders or making extra genders. But, but really it's, it's that idea that men are men. We live our lives, we do what needs to be done. We don't have to be told through an ad what needs to be done. And I think they just don't get it. And they're not going to get it by creating something like that. It's eh.
• 43:13
  Speaker B: Oh, it's a, it's a total pander. It's a total pander.
• 43:17
Speaker A: Complete. But, but, but the other thing about it is, and I said this years ago, it's not that men will not vote for a woman for president. That is horse hockey to the highest level. You know what it is? They don't mind. They will vote for a woman, but they're not going to vote for Hillary Clinton and they're not going to vote for somebody like Kamala Harris who they didn't think was competent. She has nothing to do with anything. It has nothing to do with their gender. I'll tell you one thing. I remember when, you know, Hillary was running, I said, you know something? People try to tell me that I won't vote for a woman. I said, the day we get a woman who's like a Margaret Thatcher on the ballot, I'll be the first one in line the next morning.
• 44:00
  Speaker B: Sure.
• 44:01
Speaker A: Somebody who has accomplished. Somebody who worked her way up through a very male dominated system in England, very tough political climate for a woman to rise in. And the way she handled herself in front of Parliament, she was tough as nails, Absolutely could be trusted. So don't give me this nonsense that I won't vote because she's a woman. I want to vote for competence and if that's what I can get, I really don't care because I know so many strong women, especially in the cowboy and ranch world, you know, gosh, that's right. Go, go try and date a barrel racer. She'll kick your heiney.
• 44:36
Speaker B: Oh my God. Yeah, yeah.
• 44:38
Speaker A: And so, so I don't buy all that nonsense. And that's another thing. It goes back to the cowboy and ranching world and the farm world. These people, you know, two people together, it's not, you know, the man does everything and the woman, you know, cooks and sews and cans. They work together. I know this. I went to see this woman poet, cowboy poet. She's awesome and she talks the story. She Tells about her and her husband sorting cows together are hilarious. I mean, she told this one story about for Christmas, they never exchanged gifts with each other. Never. After they've been married 50 years. Right. Raised kids, the whole deal. And they work together. And she said she saw this, just a very simple little ring, and it was in the. In the front window at the store in their hometown. It's a small town, so there's only one kind of general store. So she. He said to her, well, what do you want? You know, this is the year we decided to give each other something. She goes, well, there's something shiny, and it's in the window at the general store. And so Christmas comes around, and she's hoping, and all of a sudden, he hands her this big box, and it's about this size. She don't look like no ring box. And she opens it, and it's a silver dog dish. She's. And he says to her, well, I thought you. I thought you meant that you wanted a new dog dish, because the old one was kind of beat up. And as she told the story, she did it so much better than I did, because it's her story. But it was that idea that, well, then I got a dog dish. I still love him. And we still work together, and if we can live another 50 years, terrific. So, you know, men and women have been working in harness together for many thousands.
• 46:34
  Speaker B: Absolutely.
• 46:35
Speaker A: And will continue to do so. So if somebody wants to break us up and say that in order to be a man and vote for a woman, you got to do this, you got to do that again. It shows you that, you know consultants who are just a bunch of people who look at your watch and tell you what time it is. Consultants don't know sheep shit from Arbuckle's Coffee or about real people.
• 46:57
Speaker B: That's right. And that's. Who invented that ad. Just a bunch of people, either on K Street or Madison Avenue or some Hollywood firm. And I know because I run a PR firm, and I know how these things get made. And they're just sitting in a room, a writer's room, and they're thinking, what are cowboys really like? Somebody go get me my soy milk latte. We were talking to Patrick Dorenson, the Common Sense Cowboys Guide to Life Stories from the old guy at the end of the bar. We're going to take a break here in a second. And you know, the funny thing is, all these places in the south or the west or whatever, some of the reddest places in America have elected Women governors, women congresspeople and women U.S. senators. So it has nothing to do with that. There's plenty of talent out there. Hillary and Kamala just aren't part of it. So we will be right back. Ladies and gentlemen, you are watching Dangerous Laughter Now, AJ Another. Another actor I know you follow very closely is Elliot Page, who's making an

She's going to be in the Odyssey movie this summer. That's exactly what Homer had in mind when he. When the great poet wrote the Iliad and the Odyssey. That. That's the star right there. The bearded Lady.

At the end of the bar, we've got Patrick Dorrance in here, author of the book the Common Sense Cowboys Guide to Life. Stories from the old guy at the end of the bar. Patrick, you know, thanks you, you know, for taking the time to be with us. You know, I really appreciate it. You know, I, as a Philadelphia Eagles fan, I don't. I don't come in contact with too many cowboys. I like, but I, but I, but I, I do like them, you know, most of the time in media. I like them in real life. With you, I want to bring up something about our entertainment industry. And this is pretty much why I think the Paramount plus shows, the Taylor Sheridan shows are so popular, because there was once a time and you kind of write about this. You wrote about it in both books, but a little bit in the beginning of this, you have a poem that made me think about this. There was a time in this country during World War II and after. So, you know, the 40s, 50s and 60s, where your entertainment, once TV was around and everyone had one of these things in their house or even listening on the radio, like the Lone Ranger, right, Where everyone wanted to be a cowboy and they didn't want to be the bearded lady behind me here, Right? They didn't want to be one of the 72 genders. They wanted to be a cowboy. Kids played cops and Roger robbers, and today the cops are bad and the robbers are good. And kids played, dare I say, cowboys and Indians. And you had guys like Will Rogers, John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Roy Rogers, the Lone Ranger, Gunsmoke. And I think this may be hard for people to understand, but it wasn't just the south and the west listening to or watching this stuff. You had Catholics in the cities of the Northeast with no air conditioning, Italian, Irish, Jewish in the Northeast cities in Chicago, these cowboy movies and TV shows. You mentioned Bonanza earlier, right? The Rifleman. I could go on and on and on, right? This was appointment viewing. These were the heroes to everyone, right?
• 53:18
  Speaker A: Yep.
• 53:19
Speaker B: Blacks in the Deep south, they were watching cowboy stuff. So it was something that did bring everyone together. And I think as the entertainment community has turned, some of it has spoiled, some of it has been corrupted icons like that, you know, Charlton Heston, I mean, I can go on and on. They have to be removed, which is why you don't see a lot of it now. Unless Eastwood and Robert Duvall, who just passed, or Kevin Costner or someone, you know, Gibson, somebody wants to make these things at their discretion. I Think this is why Taylor Sheridan's shows are popular. But I want you to speak to that. Speak to our. Your childhood. You said you're an Eisenhower, baby. There was once a time when the cowboy was the marvel superhero of most of our entertainment.
• 54:17
Speaker A: Yep. And there's a. There's something that's very basic about the cowboy one. It's, it's about America's always looking west. You know, the country from the beginning. You know, when George Washington was a young surveyor, what did he do? He got a bunch of Virginia businessmen who sent him into the Ohio Valley. And that was the west at the time. Right. And there was always a yearning to go westward. Lewis and Clark, look what they opened up. You know, we bought, you know, the Louisiana Purchase. Oh, Jefferson, what did he buy that for? Well, it turns out he bought it pretty good. The war with Mexico brought in California and all kinds of other places that were new to the country. But we've always had that westward looking idea. Always look to the horizon of the West. And the one thing too, growing up was we had Hopalong Cassidy, the Lone Ranger, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers. And each one of those shows on Saturday mornings, we put on our little plastic guns and our little cowboy hats and we waited for our pajamas to watch these shows. But it was more. It was a story about good guys and bad guys, but it was also, there were little mini morality plays. There was always a message in them. And each one of the cowboys had a code of how we were supposed to conduct ourselves as little cowboys. You know, it's basically a lot of them were kind of like the Ten Commandments, you know, honor your mother and father, you know, study hard in school, make your bed in the morning, you know, eat your vegetables, be kind to strangers. I could go on and on because each one had that. So think about in America, where the kids are watching these shows and we're enjoying all the cops, you know, the cowboys and shooting and horses and the whole deal. But at the end of that show, Roy would give you a message and the parents had almost through that TV had a backup. Because if they were trying to teach those things, you know, sometimes kids are a little hard to teach those kind of things. But all of a sudden you get Roy to come along and say the same thing. Your mother told you or your father told you. And it's, you know, Roy told me, I have to eat my vegetables or. And parents could even use it. Remember what Roy said. And so it really was that time of in America where television worked hand in Hand with parents, if you will. And then the westerns got a little more adult and now, you know, with Taylor Sheridan stuff, they're pretty adult, sure. But America's love affair with the west, love affair with the cowboy, love affair with the Western way of life, it's irreplaceable and it's timeless. So I think, I think he. All he did was tap into a rich vein of our past. He modernized it and you know, to me, I mean, I want to. I wouldn't mind getting on the radio and doing every week doing a radio serial about some of the old stuff. And you know, we keep thinking about we got to invent new stuff for kids. Well, when kids are young enough, I'd like to see some young kids who haven't been tainted by all the crap and have become little smart Alex yet to watch Roy Rogers and see what they. And the funny thing is in Roy's. And I read about this Roy in his little messages, he almost told the Bible story in a parable in each one of his shows, each one over all those years. So I, I just, I got this feeling and my gut keeps telling me that these people that are the, the youngest of whatever the generations are now alpha, whatever they call it, right. They're looking for something. And if they are, you know, something, it's hidden in plain sight. It worked before and I dare say it can work again. And I, and I just like to see more of that as we go
• 58:18
Speaker B: and that and I. 100 and thank you for reminding me about, you know, we talk now at least on the right about you turn your back for a second and, you know, you got Black Little Mermaid and you got, you know, Buzz Lightyear with the gay friend and all the, I mean you got all kinds of stuff coming at you. In the old days, you could turn your back for a second and Roy could cover your six and pick up, you know, some sort of positive message and give it to your kid and you know, in short form, either through radio or tv that has been reverse engineered and we're situation now where like if you start playing Roy Rogers in some communities, that's like a hate crime probably. I mean, they. Abc, which is owned by Disney, runs Charlie Brown Christmas special every year. And for a while they took the prayer out. Yeah, they took the freaking prayer out. Right.
• 59:19
Speaker A: Schultz said put it back.
• 59:21
Speaker B: Right, right. So that's where we're at. And yes, it's wokeism, yes, it's political correctness. It's, it's secular humanism for sure. It's people that don't like the foundation of Western civilization. Greece and Rome and Judeo, Christianity, they don't like that. They want to pick and choose. They want us to move beyond that. And you are right also, and I'm sure you've seen that, that millennials, Gen Z, Gen Alpha. There is a hunger for some traditions of old to come back there. There's a, there's a spiritual awakening happening, happening a lot with Catholic Catholics in New York and whatever. I'm sure you guys have seen the, the lines outside some of these masses that are happening in New York. Everyone there is under the age of 25. But look, you're right. Taylor Sheridan is channeling and he knows it. I mean, I've seen him talk to Rogan about it and he knows that there is a hunger here for, for this type of storytelling. And I think, you know, Paramount is now owned by a Trump supporter, so you're going to get more and more of it. But I think sometimes when someone like him breaks through just from a business perspective, when the copycats show up, you might get some good stuff. Yeah, I mean, they're copying Taylor. We find this marketable. But when Yellowstone first came on the air, it was getting trashed by the, by the fancy critics on the coasts. Which brings me to. Look, I'm a Gary Cooper fan for various reasons. Everybody loves John Wayne. Everybody can agree on John Wayne, but the inheritor of the John Wayne sort of throne was a man named Clint Eastwood. Yeah. Now, I mean, look at him. I mean, I, you know, they broke the mold. Clint is now 96. 96, born in 1930. And his kids have been out there, Scott and the other one, Kyle, the bassist and film composer, talking about whether or not Clint is done. Is he done? Is he not done? I mean, I think it's small potatoes to even debate this. He's 96. He's given this country quite a bit. The former mayor of Carmel by the Sea out there in California. The question then becomes, just to follow up on what we're talking about here, who inherits from Eastwood? Because, you know, Eastwood inherited from some of the names you gave and obviously John Wayne and, and Gary Cooper and others. But, you know, can it be done? Is it. I mean, because, look, you're never gonna have another Clint Eastwood. And there's different phases to Clint's career, you know, Dirty Harry and the way, you know, the spaghetti westerns and so on. But we've got some great TV being made. But I still think Hollywood is uncomfortable for, you know, with characters like Eastwood, with. With even putting someone on the screen, whether it's an antihero or a hero or the cowboy that saves the day, or just the badass who doesn't ask permission to bring justice. I think there's a dearth of that, and I think it has to do with who's running the entertainment companies, quite frankly. But is there anyone out there that can inherit the mantle from Eastwood?
• 1:03:05
  Speaker A: I don't think there's one individual that
• 1:03:10
Speaker B: we all agree on. Yeah.
• 1:03:12
Speaker A: Right. Well, yeah, And Yellowstone is such an ensemble cast that it's hard to. And even though Kevin Costner as John Dutton was the patriarch of the families, like Ben Cartwright, there's a lot of little Joes and Hosses and Adams hanging around. Sure. So I don't know if that's really possible yet. Do I think it could happen? Yeah, but it's gonna have to have something that has some authenticity to it. Someone who's maybe even comes from the rodeo and cowboy world. Maybe somebody who's like Ben Johnson, you know, started off as a stuntman and ended up winning an Academy Award for the Last Picture Show. It could be something like that, but it's harder because if you look at, you know, John Wayne, Gary Cooper, look at their personal lives, look at the time they were born, how they came up in the world. Little harder Scrabble, little. Little different. You know, I always say, you know, we're going to get, you know, every guy who runs for the White House now, and I'm sure a lot of the ones that are going to run are creating their log cabin stories right now.
• 1:04:25
  Speaker B: That's right.
• 1:04:26
  Speaker A: Right.
• 1:04:27
Speaker B: Yeah, that's right. They all do that. Like they're. They're Horatio Alger. Horatio Alger story. That's right.
• 1:04:35
Speaker A: Yeah. And a couple. In a couple years, we're going to have somebody run for president and they're going to say, you know, I had a tough life. I grew up in a suburb in a Culdesac, and there was only one way out.
• 1:04:48
Speaker B: Yeah, that's right. I only had. I only. I had a T. I had a TV in every. I only had a TV in five rooms instead of six. That's right.
• 1:04:56
Speaker A: I had an iPhone 15 when everybody else had a 25.
• 1:05:02
  Speaker B: Exactly.
• 1:05:03
Speaker A: All that's coming. But, you know, in the cowboy world, there's a lot of rodeo cowboys. There's a lot of just regular people. I'm sure we could find ourselves, you know, the next John Wayne or the next Gary Cooper. But again, I don't know Maybe. Maybe that era is gone. I certainly don't believe that the era of the cowboy has gone, and Taylor Sheridan certainly has proven that. But at the same time, you know, we're never gonna. And also, one more thing. It's the character actors that were around those guys, right? The Gabby Hayes, the whole John Ford ensemble company. All those guys, you know, that. That were in all those John Ford Westerns.
• 1:05:52
  Speaker B: Absolutely.
• 1:05:53
Speaker A: Just don't have those people, because one of them. Where did they come from? A lot of those guys started off as wranglers for Hollywood. They were riding horses, you know, and stuff, as cowboys in all the movies. And then, you know, they came up from there. In fact, there's a funny story about that, that John Ford was directing a bunch of these guys. And know, when you ride a horse, you're not throwing your arms around and all this other stuff, right. It's actually. It's actually, you know, now you're. You're kind of going along, right? So evidently, they were. He had him coming down a hill and they were riding hard, and. And he said, hey, you guys, there's. There's no action. You guys aren't moving. Well, Mr. Ford, that's not how we ride horses. And that's.
• 1:06:35
  Speaker B: Right.
• 1:06:35
Speaker A: Then they. He got him to give a little more movement, you know, But. But again, it's authenticity. And the only people that are really authentic are the ones that do it for a living or the ones that are, you know, do it for rodeo, or the ones that we like to say, you know, they work all week so they can earn enough money to pay entry fees in the roping contest. So it's possible, but I think that's where it would come from.
• 1:07:03
Speaker B: Yeah, look, there's guys out there, you know, Billy Bob Thornton and. And the people from the Sheridan verse, you know, Matthew McConaughey and others. I mean, they're. You know, they love the country. I don't know necessarily how they all vote. I think sometimes their publicist gets them in trouble, like when McConaughey showed up at the White House. But in general, I think Americans of all stripes, like. Like guys like that, for sure. And, you know, you never know. I mean, somebody. You know, somebody may craft themselves into that. Into that person you're talking about, for sure.
• 1:07:37
Speaker A: Well, look, I also. Yeah, and one other thing. I also think that the revival of the cowboy, whether it's through Taylor Sheridan and, believe me, there's more to come, or. And whether it's, as you said, people lining up to go to church as the 250th. All these things are coming together, and it's not an accident.
• 1:07:59
  Speaker B: Right?
• 1:08:00
Speaker A: Because America, you know, we get to a certain point in this country, and I'm the one, I'm not going to harp on the left or anything else. I mean, I got to say, these poor young people, they're. You know, when I was young, there was a bumper sticker that said, never trust anyone over 30. And all these younger people are chasing Bernie Sanders. But, you know, but I think that's the last gasp of the baby boomers and God, have a nice day. I'm a baby boomer. But inexorably, we're moving in another direction, and it's quiet and it's gathering steam, and all the pieces we've been talking about today are all coming together. And that's why I hope this young people that are coming up, that that's what we can bequeath them, that we at least started the country in that direction. And if we can do that, I can go to my grave feeling a hell of a lot better.
• 1:08:53
Speaker B: And look, Clinton, Bush, Trump, and Obama, who was actually born before 1964, they're all boomers. They're different age boomers, but all four of them were. Joe Biden was actually so old that he was actually older than the boomers. So he was a, you know, whatever that silent generation or the Korean War generation prior to the boomer. So there has been no Gen X president. Now Marco Rubio's Gen X, you know, Marco Rubio's Gen X. And. But there has been a millennial vice president, which is the Current Vice President, J.D. vance.
• 1:09:28
  Speaker A: Yeah.
• 1:09:29
Speaker B: Is a millennial. Well, look, we are speaking with Patrick Dornsen. We're going to wrap things up here with Patrick, but just want to give Patrick one another chance here to talk about something. So the book is called the Common Sense Cowboys Guide to Life. Stories from the old guy at the end of the bar. If you, if you were to let the audience leave with something, impart something to them. Got to go get this book. Get it from Amazon, anywhere books are sold. Barnes and Noble books, a million comes to us from our friends at Humanics. Big shout out to them. We on the PR side, We do business with them. They're. They're a great outfit. Go out and get a copy of the book. Get, get two or three, right? It's not, it's not a giant book. Like, you know, it's not Russian. It's not Dostievsky or Tolstoy. It's a book that you buy three of them, give them the young people, you know, because, you know, they need some of this wisdom. So before we go, Patrick, what, what if you're going to distill down the message here for everyone, generations after the boomers people just coming up now, what message, what common sense cowboy message would you impart on them?
• 1:10:41
Speaker A: Well, it's, it's in my 12 rules of life. It's the first one and it's what my dad instilled in me. And it's pretty simple. Get up every day with a purpose. If you don't have a purpose, find one. No matter if you're 6 or 60 or, you know, 99, keep getting up in the morning with something other than the fact you're just going to turn on the TV and veg out or look at your phone, have a purpose. Whether that's helping young people when you get older or when you're young, trying to figure out what you want to do to make yourself a better person individually and help make your country a little better and your neighborhood a little better and your family. Because in the end of the day, it all comes down to that. It comes down to family. If we're going to change America, if we're going to try and instill stuff in people, it starts at that singular unit, the family. And we've allowed families to get busted apart too easily in recent years through divorce and all kinds of other things. We don't like something, well, we'll just move on. No, you got to start working at things. And I would also say, finally have a little faith in the Lord, right?
• 1:11:53
Speaker B: And look, we talk about it all the time here, the different generations, the ones that are obsessed with purpose, even if in your youth it's a dopey purpose, they usually do better. The people that are obsessed with identity, obsessed with misery, obsessed with the grievance mongers, you know, who, who did wrong to me yesterday and who's going to do wrong to me tomorrow. And the whole thing is just an institutional this or that. And I mean, you could spend your entire life just allowing those problems to live rent free in your head or you can get out and get moving. I tell people all the time, this, this, it's a marathon, not a sprint. So just start collecting small victories and then you'll get, you'll get bigger ones. That's, that's what I tell people. So.
• 1:12:39
  Speaker A: Yeah.
• 1:12:40
Speaker B: Look, Patrick, we love you, brother here. I mean, we're glad you're here. You know, this book, the Common Sense Cowboys Guide to Life. Everybody's gotta go get copies now. What. What are you drinking here on the COVID I. I need to know. What is this? What is this?
• 1:12:57
Speaker A: Well, I. I've got to be truthful, because that's the cowboy way that it actually is. Some iced tea that they put a little dry ice in to get it.
• 1:13:08
  Speaker B: All right.
• 1:13:08
  Speaker A: Cloudy.
• 1:13:09
Speaker B: Yeah, I was gonna say. What is that, chocolate milk? It better not be. Real freaking cowboy drinking chocolate milk to
• 1:13:15
Speaker A: all the young folks out there. I got hangovers older than they are, probably. And I've probably been kicked out of more saloons than I've been welcomed in. I love it.
• 1:13:26
Speaker B: I love it. Well, you know, you're not living life unless you're thrown out at least one saloon or another.
• 1:13:31
Speaker A: If you haven't ever been thrown out, you don't know the joy of getting brought back in.
• 1:13:36
Speaker B: It's a. It's a pastime for me as an Irish Catholic, you know, at least. At least. At least once in between each St. Patrick's Day. We've got to. And speaking of St. Patrick, Patrick Dornsen, everybody. Look, go get the book. You know, we've got to. We've got to transcend generations and bring wisdom to the. To the youth for sure. You know, I'm Old man river today, here with Patrick. Patrick is the real deal, ladies and gentlemen. He is in the West. He is a cowboy. He didn't start out that way. He started out in California, but his mother was one. Go get the book. This is dangerous laughter. Patrick, really. Again, just. Thanks for being here, sir.
• 1:14:15
