- 0:03Speaker 1: Your life, God's purpose. Listen at Purposely.com. The driver in
- 0:10Speaker 1: front of me was going so fast. slow. And it
- 0:14Speaker 1: was frustrating me. We certainly had room within the speed
- 0:18Speaker 1: limit for them to go a little bit faster and
- 0:19Speaker 1: to make some decisions a little bit earlier as they
- 0:22Speaker 1: were driving. And I could just feel myself getting more
- 0:25Speaker 1: and more irritated with what was going on. My son
- 0:28Speaker 1: was in the front seat with me as I was driving.
- 0:30Speaker 1: And I said, what is going on with this driver?
- 0:33Speaker 1: And he looked at me and he said, well, you know,
- 0:35Speaker 1: maybe they're a new driver, a student driver. You know,
- 0:38Speaker 1: I've just come through learning how to drive and I
- 0:40Speaker 1: certainly took things slow and I was cautious and kind
- 0:43Speaker 1: of moving a little, you know, a little hesitantly when
- 0:46Speaker 1: I was first learning how to drive. And I thought, oh,
- 0:49Speaker 1: that's a really good point. I'm Julie Lyles-Karr. I'm the
- 0:52Speaker 1: host of Got On The Go, part of the Purposely
- 0:54Speaker 1: Podcast Network. And our whole goal is to be with
- 0:57Speaker 1: you in those little slivers of time to help you
- 0:59Speaker 1: make the moments matter with the conversations that matter the most.
- 1:03Speaker 1: That's my youngest son. He is one of the kindest
- 1:06Speaker 1: people I know. And his willingness to look at something
- 1:09Speaker 1: from a different angle, his courage to be brave enough
- 1:13Speaker 1: to be kind in spite of maybe how something feels
- 1:17Speaker 1: is something that I really admire. Today, I think that
- 1:21Speaker 1: there is such an opportunity for us to be brave
- 1:24Speaker 1: enough to be the people who go first to be kind.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Let's face it, we live in a world today where
- 1:31Speaker 1: people are often really fast to point out what's wrong
- 1:35Speaker 1: or to criticize or to make fun of somebody, which
- 1:38Speaker 1: means that it takes even more courage to be the
- 1:42Speaker 1: person who says, no, I'm not going to be mean.
- 1:44Speaker 1: I'm not going to be irritated. I'm not going to
- 1:46Speaker 1: point out everything that's wrong. I'm going to be brave
- 1:50Speaker 1: enough to be the person who is simply kind. Now,
- 1:55Speaker 1: here's something very cool about the way that God put
- 1:58Speaker 1: us together. Do you know what happens in your brain
- 2:01Speaker 1: when you do something that's kind? When you have an
- 2:05Speaker 1: act of kindness, you open a door for someone or
- 2:07Speaker 1: you give someone a compliment or you simply are encouraging
- 2:11Speaker 1: to someone who's feeling down. Guess what happens? Your brain
- 2:15Speaker 1: gives itself a little reward. God put our brains together
- 2:19Speaker 1: in such a way that when we are kind to
- 2:21Speaker 1: each other, it gives us a sense that we've received
- 2:25Speaker 1: this amazing gift. And so that is one of the
- 2:29Speaker 1: beauties of when we're brave enough to be kind. Proverbs 3.3 says,
- 2:35Speaker 1: Let love and faithfulness never leave you. Bind them around
- 2:38Speaker 1: your neck. Write them on the tablet of your heart.
- 2:41Speaker 1: What that verse is saying is that when we are
- 2:44Speaker 1: brave enough to be people known for being loving, for
- 2:48Speaker 1: being faithful to God, for being kind, that that becomes
- 2:52Speaker 1: how we live our life, that that kind of bravery
- 2:55Speaker 1: becomes part of who we are. There's someone in the
- 2:58Speaker 1: Bible who really shows us what it is to be
- 3:02Speaker 1: brave enough to be kind. Her name is Ruth. We
- 3:06Speaker 1: learn about her in the Old Testament. And Ruth had
- 3:08Speaker 1: been through some tough stuff. She lived in the land
- 3:11Speaker 1: of Moab, and she married a man who came over
- 3:15Speaker 1: from Israel. And he came over with his brother and
- 3:18Speaker 1: his mom and dad. But then her husband died. And
- 3:23Speaker 1: then her mother-in-law's husband, her father-in-law, also died. And Ruth
- 3:27Speaker 1: went with her mother-in-law, Naomi, back to Naomi's home country
- 3:32Speaker 1: of Israel. Ruth was really good to her mother-in-law. She
- 3:36Speaker 1: helped take care of her. She helped make sure they
- 3:38Speaker 1: had food. She was encouraging to Naomi when Naomi was
- 3:42Speaker 1: really down about everything that had happened in their lives.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Ruth was quietly kind. She was quietly brave. Sometimes when
- 3:51Speaker 1: we talk about being brave enough, about having courage to
- 3:54Speaker 1: do the hard thing, We think that it has to
- 3:57Speaker 1: be something big, like running into a battle or fighting
- 4:01Speaker 1: a big fight or doing something super scary, jumping off
- 4:05Speaker 1: a building with a parachute or something like that. But really,
- 4:08Speaker 1: being brave enough? There are these quiet moments where we
- 4:12Speaker 1: make these decisions about having courage. There are these quiet
- 4:15Speaker 1: little ways in which we decide that we're going to
- 4:18Speaker 1: do something different than the world around us. A lot
- 4:21Speaker 1: of people would have understood if Ruth had left her mother-in-law.
- 4:25Speaker 1: And instead, Ruth decides to quietly be brave. She decides
- 4:29Speaker 1: to be brave enough to be kind to this woman.
- 4:33Speaker 1: And it makes such an incredible difference. Because check this out.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Through her courage, quiet bravery, through her quiet courage, through
- 4:41Speaker 1: her quiet kindness, ultimately, Ruth becomes one of the ancestors
- 4:48Speaker 1: of Jesus. That's how important quiet bravery, quiet courage really is.
- 4:55Speaker 1: A big shout out to George Fox University. You can
