- 0:08Speaker 1: This is a me eater podcast coming at you shirtless, severely,
- 0:13Speaker 1: folk bitten, and in my case, underwear listening. Un don't
- 0:16Speaker 1: me to eat podcast. You can't predict that anything. All right, everybody,
- 0:47Speaker 1: thanks for coming out. Ben's the man. I'm the man. Yeah.
- 0:56Speaker 1: I figured that was either the start or the end
- 0:58Speaker 1: of my career. Yeah. What, Oh, go ahead, I want
- 1:05Speaker 1: to go, you know, I want to get startybody's clearing
- 1:06Speaker 1: the air. It um. I'm onto everyone here. I know
- 1:11Speaker 1: the truth. Man. You just tree hugging, rock kissing green decoys.
- 1:21Speaker 1: There's some of you that might be here and you
- 1:23Speaker 1: don't know what you are. I'm gonna tell you about
- 1:27Speaker 1: what you are and how I've learned to see through it. First,
- 1:30Speaker 1: I want to make sure everyone's clear on what you are. Ben,
- 1:36Speaker 1: you want to take a stab at it? Yeah? What
- 1:39Speaker 1: a b h a bad country hunters and anglers is
- 1:43Speaker 1: green decoys. You're a bunch of environmentalists, let snobs, liberals, liberals,
- 1:51Speaker 1: liberals masquerading as sportsman. Shame on you. Yeah, you don't
- 2:01Speaker 1: need to add tum about what they are actors. They
- 2:05Speaker 1: act like they like guns, they act like they like
- 2:08Speaker 1: to hunt, act like they like to kill fish. They
- 2:11Speaker 1: act like they just want to be left alone to hunt.
- 2:14Speaker 1: That's right, but what's the truth. They're like a trojan horse.
- 2:21Speaker 1: They're sneaking into the far right to eventually take down
- 2:27Speaker 1: all hunting screen. I've seen the website. When I first
- 2:33Speaker 1: saw it, him like, dude, how did I not see it? Man?
- 2:35Speaker 1: I felt so naive. It was like because I always
- 2:39Speaker 1: saw I was looking at it. I was like, h A,
- 2:41Speaker 1: you know, I've been supporting VHA for a long time,
- 2:43Speaker 1: and I always saw. I was like, it seemed to
- 2:45Speaker 1: me like the hardest hitting hunting fishing dudes I knew about.
- 2:49Speaker 1: And I used to look at a bit man, uh
- 2:53Speaker 1: if I had to think, like, if you were going
- 2:55Speaker 1: to take a membership and tally up hours spent per
- 3:00Speaker 1: year out in the woods or in the mountains or
- 3:03Speaker 1: in the swamps, there's no conservation group that would log
- 3:08Speaker 1: the hours spent a field per member that that this
- 3:11Speaker 1: one does. That was when I was stupid and naive.
- 3:13Speaker 1: But then I started thinking about it, looking at it
- 3:15Speaker 1: more carefully, and I got looking at some of the members,
- 3:19Speaker 1: you know, looking at what they do. Got the reading
- 3:22Speaker 1: about this person, she might even be here. Cindy states.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Don't don't know. You gotta know the truth, don't. You
- 3:30Speaker 1: don't know the truth about her. You don't know the
- 3:32Speaker 1: truth about stops here, Cindy. She's a first off certified arborist.
- 3:38Speaker 1: When I hear arborist, I know we're already talking about
- 3:42Speaker 1: in the elitist we're talking about when I hear arborrests.
- 3:46Speaker 1: You know, tree hugger were literally out hugging trees. You
- 3:53Speaker 1: used to be an arbors cor That's why I know
- 3:57Speaker 1: that world man, So i'd I was like, okay, you know,
- 4:01Speaker 1: maybe there's something to this green decoy business. Someone out
- 4:04Speaker 1: running chainsaws. And then uh, you know, I started to
- 4:07Speaker 1: smell a fish. Turns out she got to she gets
- 4:10Speaker 1: she started to pretend. I got a question. Do you
- 4:12Speaker 1: think like she carries a whole bunch of Kleenex? Because
- 4:15Speaker 1: when she's up in that tree cutting those limbs, she
- 4:18Speaker 1: there must be tears with every single thing. How she
- 4:21Speaker 1: started to hone her ability to live a lie. She's like,
- 4:29Speaker 1: she's she started to infil like to infiltrate and learn
- 4:31Speaker 1: how to live a lie. So she's like cutting trees,
- 4:33Speaker 1: but she actually loves trees, and she's like, well, I
- 4:36Speaker 1: can do this. So I'm gonna get into this thing
- 4:38Speaker 1: and pretend how I like hunting. So she goes hunting.
- 4:41Speaker 1: She goes hunting six years ago. I got some details here.
- 4:44Speaker 1: She goes hunting six years ago, gets the super into it,
- 4:49Speaker 1: you know, and she's so statistic. She's so statistic that
- 4:54Speaker 1: she starts helping other people who want to get involved
- 4:57Speaker 1: in hunting. She become is a a hunting ed instructor,
- 5:05Speaker 1: which is like if you think about some shrewd ship right,
- 5:08Speaker 1: because he's she's like Donny Brasco man. She's destoring it
- 5:12Speaker 1: from the inside. So she becomes the hunting ed instructor.
- 5:15Speaker 1: And the play there is that you help other people
- 5:18Speaker 1: start hunting, right, and you make more and more hunters.
- 5:21Speaker 1: And then she gets really smart and starts going into
- 5:23Speaker 1: schools to teach archery. And she goes to four h
- 5:28Speaker 1: to teach archery. Because imagine the elaborate, the elaborate play here,
- 5:35Speaker 1: because you guys know General Patton was fighting for the Germans.
- 5:39Speaker 1: I don't you know this, So that's like how this
- 5:43Speaker 1: kind of stuff works. And I get there's another dude
- 5:45Speaker 1: I start reading about, and I've emailed with a little
- 5:46Speaker 1: bit and I started getting suspicious because he's a hunting guide.
- 5:49Speaker 1: So the first thing that goes off my head. This
- 5:51Speaker 1: guy Adam gall like hunts down in Colorado. He's got
- 5:55Speaker 1: a hunting guide business that specializes and taken It's called
- 5:58Speaker 1: Timber to Table Guide Service, where they specialize in taking
- 6:02Speaker 1: out clients who want to learn about hunting, butchering, cooking,
- 6:07Speaker 1: ground up, full on blood on your hands ship right,
- 6:11Speaker 1: because that's how you win that war against hunting. It's
- 6:16Speaker 1: like it's just became so obvious. He gets all involved
- 6:20Speaker 1: in like a partnership with the Boone and Crockett Club
- 6:23Speaker 1: where they go to colleges to help college kids learn
- 6:26Speaker 1: about hunting and get involved in the conservation movement. Duh,
- 6:32Speaker 1: you can see where it's going. I know. It's like,
- 6:34Speaker 1: how did I not see that this is the end
- 6:36Speaker 1: of hunting? Connect the dots people? And then it gets bad.
- 6:41Speaker 1: The reason I bringing up to gets bad because it
- 6:42Speaker 1: turns out that the b h A back country hunters
- 6:46Speaker 1: and angers wounded up somehow my my brother and here's
- 6:52Speaker 1: the weird hear, It gets real weird because me and
- 6:53Speaker 1: my brother started trapping muskrats. Now it's ten to know
- 6:57Speaker 1: that he was like the dedication to know at that age,
- 7:03Speaker 1: he's like, here's how I'm gonna unraffle hunting as here's
- 7:07Speaker 1: how I'm gonna destroy American hunting and fishing. At at
- 7:11Speaker 1: nine whatever years of age he shot your first year
- 7:13Speaker 1: of the bow when you were twelve? How did you
- 7:16Speaker 1: know you were gonna I had to established my hunting
- 7:18Speaker 1: bona fides if I was gonna have any chance, So
- 7:20Speaker 1: to know, to have the clarity of mine that at
- 7:23Speaker 1: twelve years of age you knew you were going to
- 7:25Speaker 1: grow up and betray hunters and gun owners and to live.
- 7:29Speaker 1: How old you know? You still haven't broke cover? He
- 7:34Speaker 1: still he still hasn't broke cover. And like you might
- 7:38Speaker 1: look at me like, okay, this, here's this guy, this elaborate,
- 7:40Speaker 1: lifelong ruse opportunity is a hardcore hunter, lives on wild
- 7:44Speaker 1: game meat wanners around the mountains by himself with Llamas.
- 7:47Speaker 1: It's like he's so he's such a character actor and
- 7:50Speaker 1: plays the role so well that he plays it by
- 7:52Speaker 1: himself out in the damn mountains. It's like he's tricking.
- 7:58Speaker 1: He's tricking, you know. Gray Jay's and to thinking he
- 8:02Speaker 1: likes to hunt, but there are there's people watching on
- 8:05Speaker 1: those ridgets, yeah, you know, and they get suspicious and
- 8:09Speaker 1: they come on. They're like, well, let's just see and
- 8:11Speaker 1: ensure enough. He comes behind and like, by god, he
- 8:13Speaker 1: does like the hunt. Uh. And here's like the little
- 8:17Speaker 1: kind of shrewd move that he does is uh near him.
- 8:21Speaker 1: There's a there's a there's a federal agency that manages
- 8:24Speaker 1: his chunk of land right and this, and they got
- 8:27Speaker 1: a boat launch that cuts through this property. And a
- 8:32Speaker 1: guy comes in and vandalizes the area. And so the
- 8:35Speaker 1: guy in charge a manage in the land, not not
- 8:37Speaker 1: out of any kind of ruthlessness or not out of
- 8:39Speaker 1: being a bad guy, but it's just he hasn't make
- 8:41Speaker 1: a decision where he's gonna have to shut down the
- 8:43Speaker 1: boat launch because the vandalism problem. And so this is
- 8:47Speaker 1: where my brother springs the trap and destroys hunting and
- 8:50Speaker 1: fishing in America is he proposes this idea where why
- 8:56Speaker 1: don't I get with b h A, why don't I
- 8:58Speaker 1: get with bad country hunters and anglers? And we'll raise
- 9:01Speaker 1: up some money and buy a gate with a key
- 9:06Speaker 1: code on it so that when people do want to
- 9:09Speaker 1: launch their boat to go hunting, fish. They'll just get
- 9:12Speaker 1: a number and enter their number, and then we'll know
- 9:16Speaker 1: who's been there and the person in charge of the
- 9:19Speaker 1: administrates this land. It's like, well, you know what, that
- 9:22Speaker 1: seems like a pretty reasonable thing. I don't have the
- 9:24Speaker 1: budget for. He's like, I'll tell you what. I'll work
- 9:26Speaker 1: with pH A will raise the money to pay for
- 9:28Speaker 1: an electronic gate and the key code system. So they
- 9:31Speaker 1: do that, and now all these you know, people that
- 9:35Speaker 1: like the hunting fish can go do it. And that's
- 9:38Speaker 1: how you get them. It's like you change the key code.
- 9:43Speaker 1: It's just the green decoit. It's just so insidious. Man.
- 9:50Speaker 1: I was blind and stupid, but now I see the truth.
- 9:53Speaker 1: I'm still gonna carry on a night like a normal show,
- 9:56Speaker 1: but I just don't want anyone to have any confusion
- 9:58Speaker 1: about what this group is actually about. Uh So Land
- 10:06Speaker 1: we're gonna do. We're gonna do a couple of things.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Uh We're gonna cover some news and feedback. We're gonna
- 10:13Speaker 1: talk about other stuff that's not that. We're gonna um
- 10:17Speaker 1: play a game seeing through the Bullshit where you get
- 10:18Speaker 1: to win something really cool. There was a game I
- 10:22Speaker 1: wanted to play. Uh. Four of us are all staying
- 10:26Speaker 1: in the same house, and we have. We've been showering
- 10:31Speaker 1: with French lavender soap. I know because I was in
- 10:35Speaker 1: there and next what's in there? And I wanted to
- 10:38Speaker 1: play game where someone wears a blindfold and has to
- 10:40Speaker 1: identify the two people who aren't staying in that house.
- 10:45Speaker 1: But we're not gonna I don't want to play that game.
- 10:47Speaker 1: I thought about it. Uh, we're nenna have a talk
- 10:50Speaker 1: with a guy named Seth Trophy is here. Okay, we're
- 10:53Speaker 1: gonna talking to him. I gotta talk to him real bad.
- 10:55Speaker 1: We're gonna do birthday giveaways. We've got other business to
- 10:58Speaker 1: take care of. But first we're gonna do interdut auctions,
- 11:00Speaker 1: and I think that the first interruction I want to
- 11:02Speaker 1: do is is land. Can you tell us how bad
- 11:05Speaker 1: the b h A situation has gotten? Like the insidious plot?
- 11:10Speaker 1: Like how many people have you got sucked into the
- 11:12Speaker 1: insidious plot to destroy America? I mean, it's so bad.
- 11:16Speaker 1: It's so bad. We got like people here right now.
- 11:22Speaker 1: That's terrible, and we got thirty six thousand across the country.
- 11:26Speaker 1: It is horrible. It's getting bad. It's horrible. It's like
- 11:30Speaker 1: the Red scare Man every day. We're getting members every
- 11:33Speaker 1: single day. We have thirty thousand at the start of
- 11:36Speaker 1: the year and all of a sudden thirty six. It
- 11:38Speaker 1: sends shivers up my spine to think you got thirty
- 11:40Speaker 1: six thousand people out there, Uh, fighting for America's public lands. Freedom.
- 11:46Speaker 1: We're fighting for freedom. Uh seriously give it, like like,
- 11:50Speaker 1: tell people a little bit about what goes on here
- 11:52Speaker 1: and who's all here and otway. So this is the
- 11:56Speaker 1: biggest group of badass hunters in the country and angler
- 12:00Speaker 1: to come together, right and like the traditional rendezvous, they
- 12:06Speaker 1: come together once a year and they come together to
- 12:08Speaker 1: share stories, come together to have a lot of fun.
- 12:11Speaker 1: They come together to learn how to infiltrate even better. Yeah.
- 12:16Speaker 1: So basically we've been we've been here since, we've been
- 12:19Speaker 1: here since Tuesday. Many of us chapter training we've been doing. Uh,
- 12:24Speaker 1: we've been learning how to infiltrate even better. And then
- 12:27Speaker 1: we were today the little elk Calling contest outside. We
- 12:31Speaker 1: have a brue fest last night with like what four thousand,
- 12:34Speaker 1: five thousand people do. Now here's how bad it gets
- 12:37Speaker 1: is that Elkholm that's like a pied piper thing where
- 12:39Speaker 1: you lure children away. That's our sirens song. This is
- 12:46Speaker 1: how bad it. Guess last night we had our brue fest.
- 12:48Speaker 1: We had a Democratic mayor, mayor beater introduce a Republican governor.
- 12:56Speaker 1: And guess what they were agreeing on stuff. It's called
- 12:58Speaker 1: public lands. That's how good we're getting. You even got
- 13:05Speaker 1: the you even got the politicians to buy in. Man,
- 13:09Speaker 1: we got the politicians buy in. We're having a lot
- 13:11Speaker 1: of funds. That's what we're doing. Steve, No, dude, so
- 13:15Speaker 1: I got I'm gonna save Col's introduction for last. We
- 13:17Speaker 1: talk about something. Ben O'Brien from Hunting Collective. Hey, I'm
- 13:21Speaker 1: the man. I'm the man. We're only calling that th
- 13:26Speaker 1: HC from here on out. That's what I'm handing out
- 13:31Speaker 1: boys every week. It's green decoys. That's your new intro.
- 13:49Speaker 1: My older brother Matt Ronella and the lovely laughing Eagle
- 13:58Speaker 1: jannest who tell us, and then uh Ryan Cal Ryan
- 14:07Speaker 1: old Cal Callahan. So here's a here's something we need
- 14:12Speaker 1: to do. Is as normally I would It's normally when
- 14:15Speaker 1: you go to a show, it's bad for him to
- 14:18Speaker 1: pull out your phone, But in this case it's perfectly
- 14:21Speaker 1: accepted to pull out your phone and Go to Google
- 14:25Speaker 1: Play or go to iTunes and download and subscribe to
- 14:32Speaker 1: Cal's new show, Cal's Weekend Review, which is your weekly
- 14:37Speaker 1: round up of ship you ought to know about. It's
- 14:43Speaker 1: a new show called Cal's We can review telling Cal
- 14:48Speaker 1: he's not kidding. Pull out your phones because I need
- 14:50Speaker 1: a job. Go to iTunes, go to Google Play, subscribe
- 14:57Speaker 1: and download Col's week in Review. You think of this
- 15:01Speaker 1: as your conservation. Cliff notes, Okay, you're gonna get everything
- 15:06Speaker 1: you need to know from last week and this week,
- 15:09Speaker 1: and you're gonna be able to regurgitate that stuff on demand. Yeah,
- 15:12Speaker 1: so when do you fake hunters are talking to real
- 15:15Speaker 1: hunters and you hit them with this ship, You're gonna
- 15:18Speaker 1: sound legit and they're gonna get They're just gonna be like,
- 15:21Speaker 1: just take my gun, and then, uh, you should have it.
- 15:25Speaker 1: You obviously know this world better than I do. When
- 15:28Speaker 1: you're done, and hold your phone up so we can
- 15:29Speaker 1: see that you've done it, checked your works. Cal's Weekend
- 15:39Speaker 1: Review weekly round up of everything you need to know
- 15:42Speaker 1: about and a lot of stuff, the things you might
- 15:45Speaker 1: even wish you didn't know about. Now now on the show,
- 15:49Speaker 1: we're gonna get into some other stuff. On the show.
- 15:51Speaker 1: We have a we have a little bit of a
- 15:53Speaker 1: habit of something will come up and then we kind
- 15:56Speaker 1: of beat it to death. Uh, and then eventually we've
- 16:00Speaker 1: beating it so to death that we eventually decided to
- 16:02Speaker 1: let it die. And there's a couple of those things
- 16:05Speaker 1: that I want to like touch on for the last
- 16:08Speaker 1: time and then we'll take our oath and not talk
- 16:09Speaker 1: about it anymore. Some of these are too funny. We
- 16:12Speaker 1: we we we had a we had a podcast where
- 16:15Speaker 1: we're talking about how excruciating it is. Two there's there's
- 16:20Speaker 1: a lot of Western hunters here, so when we're talking
- 16:21Speaker 1: about how excruciating it is to like you see a
- 16:25Speaker 1: dear way off. I thought you were gonna talk about
- 16:27Speaker 1: chap Ass. Oh no, we retired. We retired chap Ass.
- 16:33Speaker 1: We see have come down to wait, we gotta bring
- 16:35Speaker 1: up cow has flip flop chap It's first first round
- 16:41Speaker 1: out of the gate. Man, it's not flip flop season
- 16:43Speaker 1: in Montana. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm coming around though. It's okay.
- 16:48Speaker 1: The two chap Ass kres uh In the end that
- 16:53Speaker 1: seems about the unanimous almost unanimous decision was um a
- 16:58Speaker 1: product called body Glide so you guys have covered this. Yeah, no, dude,
- 17:04Speaker 1: we covered it. Most people that rode in, like if
- 17:07Speaker 1: you're gonna tally it up. There's a product called body Glide.
- 17:10Speaker 1: But one guy, uh and I've mentioned this three times now,
- 17:13Speaker 1: suggested that he would once had it so bad he
- 17:15Speaker 1: took his sandwich apart and wedged a slice of bologney
- 17:19Speaker 1: between his buttets. Between his buttets is how bad it
- 17:23Speaker 1: got for him. But there's a consensus around products such
- 17:27Speaker 1: as body Glide. I had some firefighters just two hours
- 17:30Speaker 1: ago tell me about that they trust body glide. If
- 17:33Speaker 1: a firefighter can trust it, so can you. Ah. But
- 17:37Speaker 1: the thing we're talking about is we're talking about when
- 17:39Speaker 1: you're telling someone where a deer is and they're like, well,
- 17:41Speaker 1: where is the deer? And you kind of have this
- 17:43Speaker 1: like and you do the you know when you see
- 17:47Speaker 1: that rock and then there's a tree. You know, when
- 17:49Speaker 1: you talk someone into it or talk someone onto it.
- 17:52Speaker 1: And I was taught on a later show. I got
- 17:56Speaker 1: to talk about how a guy who's he does he's
- 18:00Speaker 1: j tax so he calls air strikes for a living
- 18:05Speaker 1: in war zones, and he's like, when you're calling air
- 18:07Speaker 1: strikes for a living from the ground and you're trying
- 18:10Speaker 1: to direct firepower from on from the heavens. I like
- 18:15Speaker 1: to a establish a unit of measurement, so I would say, Okay,
- 18:21Speaker 1: go to the skyline and you see that prominent spruce
- 18:24Speaker 1: tree at the highest point. Okay, everybody agrees on that
- 18:26Speaker 1: spruce tree, that spruce tree, the width of that or
- 18:30Speaker 1: the height of that spruce tree will now become a
- 18:32Speaker 1: unit of measurement. Go down five. And he says, that's
- 18:37Speaker 1: how you talk someone in on something out in the mountains.
- 18:40Speaker 1: And I thought that was the final word. And then
- 18:42Speaker 1: we get an email from a pilot. The pilot says,
- 18:46Speaker 1: I heard Mr Ronnella say he was going to take
- 18:49Speaker 1: the tip of using the quote unit of measure technique
- 18:53Speaker 1: from J Tach. Now, being a pilot from a squadron
- 18:56Speaker 1: that conducted close air support, this made my blood boiled.
- 19:02Speaker 1: I had a genuine emotional reaction to it. Nothing kills
- 19:08Speaker 1: tempo more in the close air support environment. When you
- 19:12Speaker 1: hear the J tech come over the net and say
- 19:15Speaker 1: the distance between X and Y will be used as
- 19:18Speaker 1: a unit of measure. The frustration that the air crew
- 19:22Speaker 1: have in the time after those words is enormous, so
- 19:27Speaker 1: understand that there is some contention about establishing unit of measure.
- 19:32Speaker 1: Another thing I want to touch on it we talked about.
- 19:34Speaker 1: We spent a lot of time. Say something. If you've
- 19:37Speaker 1: heard of us talk about the guy that got in
- 19:38Speaker 1: trouble for killing the four under pound tuna and dumping
- 19:41Speaker 1: into woods. Okay, that's good because the word gets out
- 19:45Speaker 1: in the arresting officer listens to our description of what happened,
- 19:50Speaker 1: and and right then to say, you guys did a
- 19:53Speaker 1: great job explaining what happened. Here's a couple of fun
- 19:56Speaker 1: details for you that you don't know about. One, the
- 20:00Speaker 1: guy that caught the tune of that he sort to
- 20:02Speaker 1: back up for him to be sharing this information. I
- 20:06Speaker 1: don't know he sent it to me a I guess
- 20:12Speaker 1: blue fin tuna season ends in Massachusetts and the guy
- 20:15Speaker 1: catches a tune and boats at which is illegal, and
- 20:18Speaker 1: then he's got a plan to sell the tuna, but
- 20:20Speaker 1: instead drags the tunea it gets gets winded there after
- 20:23Speaker 1: him or onto him and drags a tune out in
- 20:26Speaker 1: the woods and gets a fifteen thousand dollar fine for
- 20:29Speaker 1: killing the tuna out of season. And then for fun,
- 20:32Speaker 1: they add on dump fines for dumping ship in the woods,
- 20:37Speaker 1: And the best detail that comes out of it is
- 20:39Speaker 1: that when he dragged it away, he actually tied it
- 20:43Speaker 1: to his girlfriend's car. And it's like, there's a there's
- 20:49Speaker 1: a rule in comedy about specificity and tying a tune
- 20:53Speaker 1: into your car and dragging it away. It's funny, but
- 20:58Speaker 1: it's not as funny it's tying a tune into your
- 21:01Speaker 1: girlfriend's car and dragging it away. It's just like it
- 21:05Speaker 1: just as a rule of comedy. But the guy, this
- 21:07Speaker 1: guy is a glutton for punishment, so he gets in
- 21:09Speaker 1: all this trouble. But he gets out. He's on frobation,
- 21:11Speaker 1: and what does he do on probation. He's go He
- 21:13Speaker 1: goes out to get vengeance on people who testified against him.
- 21:18Speaker 1: So he goes to one of them and steals a
- 21:20Speaker 1: bunch of his lobster pots and dumps him in the
- 21:23Speaker 1: woods apparently. So now he's in jail for tampering with
- 21:29Speaker 1: lobster gear and his second defense of illegal dumping, the
- 21:33Speaker 1: first being a tuna. I asked Matt too. I asked
- 21:39Speaker 1: Matt earlier if he could work up a moral to
- 21:41Speaker 1: the story, and he really couldn't know. I just thought
- 21:44Speaker 1: it was you can't compete with the truth on this.
- 21:47Speaker 1: I mean he couldn't. It's the morals so clear that
- 21:51Speaker 1: you can't make up a moral because it's already just
- 21:53Speaker 1: so clear. What do you tell the girlfriend bagging a minute,
- 22:00Speaker 1: gonna borrow your car? No, nothing's wrong with mine. No,
- 22:02Speaker 1: that's not a four d pound tuna tied to the
- 22:04Speaker 1: back of the car. Another thing, we recently shared a
- 22:08Speaker 1: story and we recently shared an old story about a
- 22:12Speaker 1: Wyoming man who caught a lake trout with a dude's
- 22:16Speaker 1: finger in it. This happened in Idaho too. It's a
- 22:22Speaker 1: better story because the characters in the story are better.
- 22:24Speaker 1: Just back of two thousand twelve on Priests Lake, freest Lake, Idaho.
- 22:28Speaker 1: There's a wake boarder who notices a curla queue form
- 22:31Speaker 1: in the line. And what does he do but try
- 22:33Speaker 1: to straighten the curlaque out as the boat takes off.
- 22:35Speaker 1: There they all go, all four of them. Then some
- 22:39Speaker 1: dudes are fishing. One of these dudes names is Calvin,
- 22:42Speaker 1: and Calvin and his body catch four pound trout and
- 22:44Speaker 1: they're cleaning and they sit there's something in the stomach
- 22:46Speaker 1: and they were using crayfish, and they think, oh, it
- 22:49Speaker 1: must be a crayfish. It's not. Calvin's body catches a
- 22:55Speaker 1: fish for Calvin. Calvin has all the good quotes. One
- 22:58Speaker 1: of his quotes is it was as fresh as if
- 23:02Speaker 1: it was on my finger. Then he goes in the
- 23:08Speaker 1: story I read, he goes on to say, I've caught
- 23:10Speaker 1: a zillion fish, but never one with a human finger.
- 23:15Speaker 1: And he points out that they felt so Apparently lucky
- 23:20Speaker 1: would be the word that they went out and bought
- 23:23Speaker 1: lottery tickets that day. There must be something about that
- 23:28Speaker 1: shape that lake Trout really liked. Yeah, because Flathead Lake
- 23:32Speaker 1: they fish for him with Johnsonville Brott's Superficially, after read
- 23:38Speaker 1: about Yeah, after reading about all these fingers and Trout,
- 23:41Speaker 1: if I saw Johnsonville Brotten the fish, I would like
- 23:44Speaker 1: assume it. At the time the article I was looking
- 23:47Speaker 1: at was written, there was a lot of uncertainty swirling
- 23:49Speaker 1: around this whole thing. Because the guy they they fingerprint
- 23:53Speaker 1: the finger they turned they know Joe. They turned the
- 23:57Speaker 1: fish into the cops, and the cops pulled the finger
- 23:58Speaker 1: out and fingerprinted and run through their database and it
- 24:01Speaker 1: turns up the dude's name. I don't know why he'd
- 24:04Speaker 1: been fingerprinted, but they a belongs to this guy. They
- 24:07Speaker 1: go find him. Sure enough, it's his finger. He says
- 24:10Speaker 1: he initially doesn't want it back, but then he starts
- 24:15Speaker 1: to rethink it. Meanwhile, the police learned that he doesn't
- 24:19Speaker 1: allow it back, but they keep it in their evidence
- 24:21Speaker 1: freezer in case he changes his mind. At the time
- 24:24Speaker 1: the article is written, the man who owns the finger
- 24:27Speaker 1: had called his doctor to ask his opinion, but was
- 24:30Speaker 1: awaiting a call back, so they caught that. They call
- 24:35Speaker 1: these people in this like brief moment of uncertainty, which
- 24:37Speaker 1: makes the news story more interesting. So here's my question.
- 24:41Speaker 1: Is it his finger? That's why I got the email?
- 24:45Speaker 1: Is it his finger? That's the reason someone brought these
- 24:53Speaker 1: finger stories to my attention because we were talking too
- 24:56Speaker 1: much about Steve Kendrolls. Dear An, there's a deer. Tell
- 25:01Speaker 1: my god, we're talking about this too many times. There's
- 25:04Speaker 1: a guy that shot a buck that was missing a time.
- 25:07Speaker 1: His body shot a buck and the time is stuck
- 25:09Speaker 1: in it. So the body kept the time, We ridiculed
- 25:12Speaker 1: the body, and the buddy gave the time back to Steve's.
- 25:15Speaker 1: Now Steve has the head and the time, and he says,
- 25:18Speaker 1: if that's justice, whose finger is the fish carrying around?
- 25:25Speaker 1: Does the guy with the fish you know, is he
- 25:29Speaker 1: like screw you as my finger? It's like my fish.
- 25:33Speaker 1: If you caught a fish that had a crayfish in it,
- 25:35Speaker 1: you don't go find who owned the crayfish and it's
- 25:39Speaker 1: not wildlife. You can sell it to him. They give him,
- 25:45Speaker 1: give him the finger. Jokes are just easy to write
- 25:47Speaker 1: the finger. Your wife might be glad we found that.
- 25:53Speaker 1: I can only imagine. Uh, that's not what I meant.
- 25:57Speaker 1: I think it was taking out of context. Uh, speaking
- 26:02Speaker 1: of that idahole story, this is something that came into us.
- 26:05Speaker 1: This is we're breaking this story an ambulance. A guy
- 26:08Speaker 1: who he works on a NAMA I don't know what exactly,
- 26:10Speaker 1: doesn't name us up in Polatello. This is a recent
- 26:14Speaker 1: it was like an Idaho man breaking news here on
- 26:17Speaker 1: Meteor podcast. They get a call to brothers gotten a
- 26:20Speaker 1: big fight on New Year's Eve and apparently, like according
- 26:23Speaker 1: to witnesses, as he learns the story, during the fight,
- 26:26Speaker 1: one of them goes up like he's gonna kiss the
- 26:29Speaker 1: other one. One of the brothers. It's somehow I don't
- 26:34Speaker 1: want to get too much detail because it's a little
- 26:35Speaker 1: bit hazy and email. But it just so happens that
- 26:39Speaker 1: one of the brothers bites off the tongue of the
- 26:41Speaker 1: other brother, and the brother that bites it off spits
- 26:45Speaker 1: it onto the ground. The police come out, the ambulances
- 26:48Speaker 1: come out. Everybody's going off to the hospital. They go
- 26:51Speaker 1: in to recover the tongue and a cat ate the tongues.
- 26:56Speaker 1: This is the first hand report out of Polkatello. Ah
- 27:04Speaker 1: can I say like he gave him the tongue and
- 27:06Speaker 1: we just move on his tongue jokes, his tongue jokes.
- 27:08Speaker 1: I will not make um man. I'm just the man
- 27:16Speaker 1: wrote in to talk about it. H quick hit from Matt.
- 27:19Speaker 1: You don't remember growing up how there's a type of
- 27:22Speaker 1: fence that we call a cyclone fence. That's that word
- 27:25Speaker 1: is not widely used. They call him other stuff like
- 27:30Speaker 1: what link We got taught in the other day about
- 27:34Speaker 1: how I heard another person used cyclone fence and I
- 27:37Speaker 1: was like, interesting that you just said cyclone fence. The
- 27:40Speaker 1: guy from Louisa, Louisiana road, He goes, I never heard
- 27:42Speaker 1: the word cyclone fence. But what we call a chain
- 27:45Speaker 1: link fence. Chain link fence is a hurricane fence, my
- 27:49Speaker 1: guests being that someone had one in a hurricane came
- 27:52Speaker 1: and it was still there, and he names it that,
- 27:56Speaker 1: and he said, when a Cajun gets wind of something
- 28:00Speaker 1: that can still be standing after a hurricane, it moves
- 28:02Speaker 1: to the top of the list of ship he wants
- 28:04Speaker 1: to buy it. So he feels that that's how it
- 28:08Speaker 1: achieved that name. Uh. We also had a recent conversation.
- 28:12Speaker 1: We talked about the developing offensiveness of terms like sportsmen, fishermen,
- 28:22Speaker 1: what else we have outdoorsmen, and struggling for a gender
- 28:27Speaker 1: neutral term. And a guy wrote into question that I
- 28:30Speaker 1: haven't even begun to grapple with. And it's a really
- 28:32Speaker 1: interesting point. I'm not I'm just gonna say it and
- 28:35Speaker 1: I'm not gonna comment on it because I haven't even
- 28:38Speaker 1: untangled in my head. But he spells out for words sportsmen, fishermen,
- 28:45Speaker 1: outdoors men. Woman, He's like, I don't get it. Uh, Okay,
- 28:58Speaker 1: Like it's good, I haven't thought of Like what I
- 29:01Speaker 1: haven't I don't know yet. A Canadian woman named Chloe
- 29:06Speaker 1: came down to the US UH to visit and there's
- 29:11Speaker 1: a bunch of turkeys hanging around and how she's renting,
- 29:14Speaker 1: and she was thinking about how we're always talking about
- 29:17Speaker 1: things that will make turkey's gobble, and she walked over
- 29:22Speaker 1: on the porch of the house she's renting and rang
- 29:24Speaker 1: a dinner bell and they gobbled, and the irony of
- 29:27Speaker 1: that was not lost on her. So add that to
- 29:31Speaker 1: the list dinner bells bring him running. A guy wrote in,
- 29:35Speaker 1: we made a shirt that has all the things that
- 29:39Speaker 1: will make a turkey shot gobble on it. Some of
- 29:43Speaker 1: the things sonic booms, the more interesting sounds will make
- 29:45Speaker 1: a turkey shot gobble. And a guy wrote in a
- 29:47Speaker 1: complain about the shirt, saying it was like a graphic
- 29:51Speaker 1: grip and grin photo because it says it makes it
- 29:55Speaker 1: seem that that turkey hunting is so easy that people
- 29:59Speaker 1: will think that turkey hunting is bad and they'll turn
- 30:01Speaker 1: against turkey hunting. But there's a big difference between the
- 30:05Speaker 1: number of turkeys you hear gobble and the number of
- 30:08Speaker 1: turkeys you here that you shoot. It would be like
- 30:12Speaker 1: how many people you can get to say hi to
- 30:14Speaker 1: you and how many people have sex with you are
- 30:18Speaker 1: like really different. Yeah, that's how you destroy turkey hunting? Um?
- 30:31Speaker 1: What else? Oh? A couple more newsy things. Speaking of turkeys,
- 30:36Speaker 1: a couple of guys wrote in about, uh, what is
- 30:38Speaker 1: happening when turkeys spit and drum? Johnny anyone? Because I
- 30:47Speaker 1: was wrong about this? I was, no, I was. I
- 30:51Speaker 1: actually didn't. I didn't know till you told me. And
- 30:53Speaker 1: it's funny that we also got emails about it. Do
- 30:56Speaker 1: you know, Matt what the noises? Well, honestly I know now,
- 31:00Speaker 1: but I'm asking if you know, I'll take a crack
- 31:02Speaker 1: at it. But this could be completely wrong. I thought
- 31:04Speaker 1: the spit was actually a spit like him going yep
- 31:08Speaker 1: and the drums when he's fuffing up his feathers. Not
- 31:11Speaker 1: correct on either front. No, first one. First of one,
- 31:15Speaker 1: you know how hot it wasn't that suit suit man?
- 31:20Speaker 1: So what you guys to know that it was Texas?
- 31:24Speaker 1: It was hot, that's where you were dusting, right. I
- 31:27Speaker 1: think someone that wrote in is here tonight that wrote
- 31:30Speaker 1: him to ask this question. He he wanted us to
- 31:33Speaker 1: do our best spitting drum, which is my favorite thing
- 31:35Speaker 1: to do. But Yanni explain, that's how neutral. I don't
- 31:44Speaker 1: even read. Man. It was a she that wrote in
- 31:48Speaker 1: about um, what's going on there? Tell him spitting and drummond,
- 31:54Speaker 1: it's all it's it's a vocalization. Is a vocalization? Oh?
- 32:06Speaker 1: Who knew? A person wrote into Ask and they said
- 32:12Speaker 1: they just started turkey hunting, and they said, when I'm
- 32:14Speaker 1: close to a turkey, I don't understand, but I swear
- 32:17Speaker 1: I'm hearing low thunder. Oh. A couple of years ago,
- 32:23Speaker 1: I tracked the turkey through the woods for a half
- 32:26Speaker 1: hour and shot him just based on that sound. That
- 32:38Speaker 1: that was a gross basterdization of what he was. It's yeah,
- 32:49Speaker 1: but he must be fanning out when he's doing that,
- 32:51Speaker 1: because you know it's always yeah, But he's not. He's
- 32:56Speaker 1: just rubbing his wings on the ground, rubbing wings on
- 33:00Speaker 1: the ground, which you can hear sometimes. Yeah, you can
- 33:02Speaker 1: hear those wings dragon. You hear that a lot. Hey,
- 33:05Speaker 1: you guys, this is Is it all right? If I
- 33:07Speaker 1: put it a little aside in here. So my turkey
- 33:12Speaker 1: season hasn't been going great like I've got to, but
- 33:16Speaker 1: I had. I was. I allowed hubrisk going into it.
- 33:19Speaker 1: I was gonna try to get five Can you explain hubris?
- 33:23Speaker 1: Like false confidence? You know? But I think that it's
- 33:27Speaker 1: more than that, right a little. My cheese isn't based
- 33:31Speaker 1: on incomplete knowledge of the situation, like you're just ignorant
- 33:37Speaker 1: of But I think at all, in in Greek, in
- 33:39Speaker 1: Greek tragedy, I think it's your hubris that leads to
- 33:42Speaker 1: your downfall. Oh we're gonta have five because I was
- 33:46Speaker 1: so cocky. But anyway, so I'd like to add that
- 33:49Speaker 1: it's like a critical element of turkey hunting, I think.
- 33:52Speaker 1: But if you don't have some huge during your hunt,
- 33:57Speaker 1: it wouldn't be turkey hunting. Do you know how to experience? Then?
- 34:01Speaker 1: I had? I had it the other morning. This is
- 34:03Speaker 1: a major aside on my side. But when I had
- 34:06Speaker 1: just slipped in there and I'd been there for five
- 34:08Speaker 1: minutes in the dark, and my gun was set up
- 34:10Speaker 1: right right, knew he was gonna fly down, and I'm
- 34:13Speaker 1: already thinking about the text and the Instagram story, got it.
- 34:22Speaker 1: And then about two hours later, I'm just you know,
- 34:24Speaker 1: red faced and just wanting to dig a hole and
- 34:27Speaker 1: called out into and bury myself. That's turkey hunting. But
- 34:32Speaker 1: go on, I shot the king. Did you care about this?
- 34:40Speaker 1: You saw it? This dude had three strands and his left,
- 34:47Speaker 1: and his beard and the rest of them are all
- 34:50Speaker 1: like it's like he had a mohawk or something. They're
- 34:53Speaker 1: all shaved off, like I don't know if you got
- 34:57Speaker 1: like it burned on the tank heater last winter or
- 35:01Speaker 1: like just fighting. I watched him for an hour straight.
- 35:05Speaker 1: He never unpuffed, not once, and uh, he was immune
- 35:15Speaker 1: to my seduction. And he's out in the middle of
- 35:19Speaker 1: antelope country, like a quarter mile from the nearest tree.
- 35:23Speaker 1: So I was able to doing two which patch of
- 35:26Speaker 1: trees he was going to go to. And when he
- 35:29Speaker 1: came into roost, he had four or five hands. He
- 35:32Speaker 1: had three gobblers with him. He didn't give a ship.
- 35:36Speaker 1: There's like his little A lot of gobblers are get
- 35:38Speaker 1: like defensive and stuff. Yeah, hearing boys, man, little wise guys.
- 35:46Speaker 1: It's sent him off for corn, you know. And I
- 35:52Speaker 1: freaking whack him. And then I whacked one of his buddies.
- 35:59Speaker 1: Can you do when you talk? I was suggest like
- 36:01Speaker 1: a like a more robust report. I don't want to
- 36:06Speaker 1: overstate it, you know, um, but that dude, I opened
- 36:13Speaker 1: both those birds up. His little buddy was plugged with
- 36:17Speaker 1: green feed. He was completely empty. And this was like
- 36:21Speaker 1: when he's going into roost for the night. He's going
- 36:24Speaker 1: in empty stomach because all he cares about it lots
- 36:29Speaker 1: like just lock strut, lock strut all day long, never
- 36:32Speaker 1: a bite to eat. This thing has spurs on it
- 36:35Speaker 1: like that. I'm gonna I promise to Steve's daughter Rosy,
- 36:39Speaker 1: but I'm kind of reconsidering because i'd kind of like
- 36:42Speaker 1: to six year old child. I kinda yeah, it gets sicker.
- 36:49Speaker 1: I I was fancy about gluing him to the end
- 36:53Speaker 1: of like popsicle sticks and then flicking people with him elbow.
- 37:07Speaker 1: You know, Land, you got anything you need to add there?
- 37:11Speaker 1: What am I gonna add to? Speaking for all turkeys.
- 37:18Speaker 1: We've we've been talking a lot. You're good, Matt, Yeah,
- 37:21Speaker 1: sorry about that. No, no, no, it was a great
- 37:24Speaker 1: quick side point. It's best thing to happen. Um We've
- 37:28Speaker 1: been talking a lot about cat human mountain lion human
- 37:32Speaker 1: cat human conflicts, and then there's even an art like
- 37:35Speaker 1: there's an ABC News article about the increase in cat
- 37:40Speaker 1: human conflicts. Um. Now, if you go to ABC News
- 37:45Speaker 1: for wildlife reporting, uh, it's like going to Michael Moore's
- 37:49Speaker 1: website for gun reviews. But uh, uh, big story on
- 37:56Speaker 1: cat human conflicts, and it goes into this deep history
- 37:59Speaker 1: of how we came to have like why do we
- 38:01Speaker 1: have these these burgening, like growing populations mountain lions expanding
- 38:06Speaker 1: in the new train all the time and more and
- 38:08Speaker 1: more mountain lions. And the story starts out on a
- 38:12Speaker 1: kind of a like a factual note where it says that,
- 38:15Speaker 1: you know, in the forties and fifties, we were running
- 38:17Speaker 1: these bounty programs from mountainlins and paying people year round
- 38:20Speaker 1: to kill mountainlins. And then we curtailed those systems, started
- 38:23Speaker 1: regulating mountain lions as a big game species and introduced
- 38:26Speaker 1: harvest quotas, closed seasons, all kinds of regulations around it,
- 38:31Speaker 1: and we started doing a lot of conservation work to
- 38:35Speaker 1: recover dear and elk populations. And as we improved dear
- 38:38Speaker 1: and elk populations and stop paying, uh, you know, stop
- 38:43Speaker 1: paying people to kill cats without any consideration of seasonality
- 38:48Speaker 1: or bag limits, we you know, basically through this thing
- 38:51Speaker 1: we called the North American model of wildlife conservations started
- 38:54Speaker 1: growing mountain lion numbers. But here's the rub. It's like
- 38:59Speaker 1: a positive article about how great it is that we
- 39:01Speaker 1: have a bunch of cats around, But then they're like
- 39:04Speaker 1: you can see the writers start to sweat. We're like,
- 39:07Speaker 1: how can I turn this into an anti hunting article
- 39:10Speaker 1: because I kind of dug a hole for myself, like
- 39:12Speaker 1: regulated honeying. We got all these mountain lions, they kind
- 39:15Speaker 1: of these hunters like kind of recovered deer and elk,
- 39:17Speaker 1: and there's all this food on the landscape now. And
- 39:20Speaker 1: so then they get to getting crafty and they're and
- 39:23Speaker 1: they go on to say that, uh, in fact, they
- 39:26Speaker 1: kind of forgot that. They're saying how good it is
- 39:28Speaker 1: that we've got some mountain lions. And then they're like, oh,
- 39:30Speaker 1: it's kind of a bummer that we have all these
- 39:32Speaker 1: mountain lions. Because we have all these mountain lions is
- 39:34Speaker 1: because hunters kill old mature mountain lions. And everyone knows
- 39:38Speaker 1: that old mature mountain lion will kill all the other
- 39:40Speaker 1: mountain lions around. So now that we kill the old
- 39:43Speaker 1: mature mountain lions, uh, the little ones live and they
- 39:48Speaker 1: go and spread around, and they're young and they go
- 39:51Speaker 1: to strike out and colonize new areas, and that leads
- 39:54Speaker 1: to conflicts of humans, and that just goes to show
- 39:56Speaker 1: you how bad hunters are. Um and you start are
- 40:00Speaker 1: getting lost in the logic of a little bit and
- 40:02Speaker 1: then the real singer. In the end, they point out that,
- 40:04Speaker 1: you know, California band mountain lion hunting, and they now
- 40:08Speaker 1: have the lowest per capital rate of human mountain lion conflicts.
- 40:14Speaker 1: And I got to think of myself, they also have
- 40:16Speaker 1: the lowest per capital rate of people who have never
- 40:19Speaker 1: encountered a treat. So, uh, excavators in southern Indiana found
- 40:28Speaker 1: massid on bones. Well, before we leave the mountain lion thing. Uh,
- 40:36Speaker 1: you guys probably talked about this because it was all
- 40:38Speaker 1: over the news about this guy that killed the mountain lion. Yeah,
- 40:41Speaker 1: but you know what, Yeah, I know it was a
- 40:42Speaker 1: small one and all that he never went out. He
- 40:46Speaker 1: was not like I am, the great man's the world's
- 40:49Speaker 1: greatest man. He was. He was very, very, matter of very.
- 40:54Speaker 1: But the reason I would bring this up because I
- 40:56Speaker 1: want to give you. I want to give you an
- 40:58Speaker 1: opportunity to um apologize to me publicly, okay, because as
- 41:05Speaker 1: you were called, that's very I I took a lot
- 41:12Speaker 1: of ship from you and Dan, our other brother, and
- 41:14Speaker 1: all our friends growing up because I had a firm,
- 41:18Speaker 1: heartfelt belief I wasn't too worried about prayers because I
- 41:21Speaker 1: always felt like I could just grab him by the
- 41:23Speaker 1: juggler and choke him out. That's not your turns out.
- 41:27Speaker 1: That wasn't your plan. That wasn't your plan, your lying, No,
- 41:31Speaker 1: your plan, No, no, your plan, your plan in the
- 41:37Speaker 1: event of a grizzly attack, I'll remind you of your plan.
- 41:41Speaker 1: Your plan was, that is, he explained to me, as
- 41:46Speaker 1: you get him by the bottom teeth and by the
- 41:49Speaker 1: top teeth and hold his mouth agape until he's tired
- 41:58Speaker 1: and worn out and you walk way. I feel that
- 42:01Speaker 1: was what was explained. That that was the that was
- 42:04Speaker 1: the pepper spray equivalent. Dude, I'm out of this podcast.
- 42:12Speaker 1: I can't. I there might be some truth to that,
- 42:17Speaker 1: because there's a old Latvian folklore story called lodge Classes
- 42:24Speaker 1: and literally the name lodge plass is and lots is
- 42:31Speaker 1: is bear too. Plays is the verb to rip, lodge
- 42:39Speaker 1: plass is the bear ripper. And aside from spreedy this
- 42:46Speaker 1: which is another story we won't I won't get into
- 42:48Speaker 1: all the Latvian folklore stories I know about the characters,
- 42:51Speaker 1: but large Classes is like he's the man from Latvian
- 42:55Speaker 1: folklore and he saved his mother from a bear by
- 42:58Speaker 1: doing just that. I think he continue to pull until
- 43:02Speaker 1: he ripped him, until he ripped. That gives me an
- 43:04Speaker 1: idea for my popsicle stick flick them. So what's his name?
- 43:13Speaker 1: And they would tell stories about him? Yes, they always
- 43:18Speaker 1: end the same way. I think you just did. There's
- 43:23Speaker 1: just one story. You know what he did that? Well,
- 43:29Speaker 1: what did you do to that bear? Dad? Well, let
- 43:30Speaker 1: me tell you. Excavators in southern Indiana found masodon bones
- 43:37Speaker 1: on an old family farm. I was reading about this
- 43:40Speaker 1: and uh. In the article the farmer cited the discovery
- 43:44Speaker 1: as an example of just how much things have changed
- 43:47Speaker 1: around here. Minnesota's governor. Minnesota's governor I always like to
- 43:58Speaker 1: point out in the office once occupied by Jeff c. Ventura, UH,
- 44:03Speaker 1: Governor Tim Walls just did an out about face UH
- 44:07Speaker 1: to announce his opposition to wolf hunting. Um and like
- 44:11Speaker 1: to paint his opposition to wolf unding. He's taken the
- 44:13Speaker 1: call at sport hunting. Meanwhile, he just went out on
- 44:16Speaker 1: a the Governor's turkey hunt, which is kind of a
- 44:20Speaker 1: symbolic turkey hunt, and then turns around and expresses his
- 44:24Speaker 1: disapproval around wolf hunting, and um, sport hunts a little
- 44:28Speaker 1: thing you use when you want something to look bad.
- 44:31Speaker 1: But I wonder if he felt that his governor's turkey
- 44:33Speaker 1: hunt is subsistence hunting. I don't know. Um another governor story,
- 44:40Speaker 1: your daver he stayed over in Washington just legalized hunters pink,
- 44:44Speaker 1: which you know, we all know that this is gonna
- 44:46Speaker 1: bring in legions of new hunters who you know, I don't,
- 44:50Speaker 1: I don't hundreds of people that weren't participating due to
- 44:53Speaker 1: the available palette of safety clothing. But in Washington to
- 44:59Speaker 1: change the law, they have to bring it for the
- 45:01Speaker 1: governor's signature. And you I just like have this image
- 45:03Speaker 1: in my mind when your governor like running this big state,
- 45:06Speaker 1: you know, and all these like huge companies are there
- 45:09Speaker 1: and things going on, and then one day guys like, uh,
- 45:13Speaker 1: you know, I hate to do this to you, but
- 45:15Speaker 1: you're gonna have to say sign this bill here and
- 45:18Speaker 1: he's like, what is this will? This is what this
- 45:20Speaker 1: does allows people to wear uh pink while hunting. And
- 45:26Speaker 1: he's like, oh, wonderful, let's get this. Let's get this executed.
- 45:32Speaker 1: That's always like a bunch of old guys. They're standing
- 45:34Speaker 1: there right, let's execute this. This will be made law now. Um,
- 45:41Speaker 1: if you guys had to rate, uh, and I know
- 45:43Speaker 1: it's not fair, except talking to a bunch of guys
- 45:45Speaker 1: right now. Um, what do you think, like how effective
- 45:50Speaker 1: is I think nine states? Washington? I think it's the
- 45:53Speaker 1: ninth ninth state two allow blaze pain. If you had
- 46:01Speaker 1: you can just like what do you think about it?
- 46:03Speaker 1: And you could and stuff like this where I don't
- 46:05Speaker 1: really care. I kind of have this thing where you
- 46:07Speaker 1: could be like yeah, or you could be like yeah,
- 46:10Speaker 1: or you could be like yeah, right. That would be
- 46:14Speaker 1: sort of the range of my You just took all
- 46:17Speaker 1: my answers then, so I'll be like yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 46:23Speaker 1: How do you like do you feel it's gonna have
- 46:24Speaker 1: an impact? No? No, I want to pull the women
- 46:29Speaker 1: in the audience. What do you think pink out there?
- 46:32Speaker 1: Give me a woo for pink. If you're more in pink,
- 46:35Speaker 1: then you wouldn't orange or in the nine States. I don't.
- 46:42Speaker 1: I don't have a problem with it. No, you're taking
- 46:46Speaker 1: me wrong. I don't have a problem with it. I
- 46:48Speaker 1: don't care. I just I don't care what color because
- 46:50Speaker 1: I think in a lot of states hunters orange rules
- 46:52Speaker 1: are necessary. I just feel like it's a uh, I
- 46:57Speaker 1: just feel like it's talking about something that it isn't
- 46:59Speaker 1: really gonna do anything. That's all, yeah, where what color
- 47:03Speaker 1: you want? But just I just don't think if they're
- 47:06Speaker 1: passing the bill thinking this is gonna grow hunter numbers,
- 47:08Speaker 1: I think that's just like we gotta lick now we
- 47:11Speaker 1: got them. I mean, with all the barriers, I don't
- 47:13Speaker 1: think that's the one we should be working on. Right.
- 47:14Speaker 1: You don't know that that's the one. There's been any
- 47:16Speaker 1: the other ones. You could take that same time and
- 47:19Speaker 1: energy and just like simplified like a page or two
- 47:22Speaker 1: in the Big Game regulations, and that probably would have
- 47:24Speaker 1: gotten more taking a pink take it a pink highlighter
- 47:31Speaker 1: and highlighted all the bullshit. That would have done better.
- 47:35Speaker 1: Or you would take that energy and clarify once and
- 47:38Speaker 1: for all. If you're in a state where you have
- 47:41Speaker 1: to have on an orange vest and you put a
- 47:44Speaker 1: backpack on, are you now legal or illegal? That would
- 47:49Speaker 1: be helpful to know. Uh. Speaking of big cats US
- 47:54Speaker 1: fish and while the services put out there Jaguar Recovery
- 47:59Speaker 1: Plan which is super are interesting and it's it's great
- 48:02Speaker 1: that there. It's great that this is happening. And part
- 48:05Speaker 1: of the jaguar recovery plan comes down to identifying habitat
- 48:09Speaker 1: in the US. And the trouble was they assembled this
- 48:12Speaker 1: thing is there, limiting their definition of the recovery unit
- 48:19Speaker 1: two places that only had observation where observations have been
- 48:23Speaker 1: made since nineteen sixty two. So the recovery unit winds
- 48:28Speaker 1: up having this arbitrary northern border of I ten, which
- 48:32Speaker 1: for the US just gives you like a fingernail clipping
- 48:35Speaker 1: of the US as being jaguar area. And they're ruling
- 48:41Speaker 1: out hard evidence that's pre nineteen sixty two, hard evidence
- 48:46Speaker 1: of jaguar habitation in New Mexico, Western Texas, Central and
- 48:52Speaker 1: northern Arizona. And then of course they're ruling out anecdotal
- 48:56Speaker 1: evidence of jaguars in California, you in Louisiana. So I
- 49:02Speaker 1: think it's great that they're thinking about this, and I
- 49:04Speaker 1: would love to see jaguar recovery going on. I mean,
- 49:09Speaker 1: it's kind of like jaguars in the US. We sometimes
- 49:11Speaker 1: have one, maybe sometimes too for lucky, probably never any
- 49:16Speaker 1: more than that. Uh, speaking of distractions, right, of all
- 49:21Speaker 1: the stuff that needs to be done and to think
- 49:22Speaker 1: that like we're making laws about what, like you know,
- 49:28Speaker 1: making the color palette bigger for safety clothing. Um, what
- 49:33Speaker 1: do you guys feel is jaguar recovery? Is it just
- 49:37Speaker 1: too far out there and too radical that it's a
- 49:41Speaker 1: distraction from other stuff we should be working on, or
- 49:44Speaker 1: do you think it's like okay to sit around thinking
- 49:46Speaker 1: about this every day? Like I do all parts matter?
- 49:50Speaker 1: Mant cariboo, Like, like what were we gonna do about cariboo?
- 49:54Speaker 1: I think all parts matter? And if they were here,
- 49:56Speaker 1: I think we should try. Yeah, because that's what the
- 50:00Speaker 1: thing is that you get into this bait, like like
- 50:03Speaker 1: if you're gonna base good enough on present, you know
- 50:07Speaker 1: what I mean, if you're gonna say, like, okay, environmentally, ecologically, wildlife, habitat,
- 50:11Speaker 1: hunting opportunities baseline is right now, that's cool, like to
- 50:17Speaker 1: hold the line. But if they had said that in
- 50:19Speaker 1: nineteen forty that they were going to hold the line,
- 50:22Speaker 1: we wouldn't be doing a third of the things that
- 50:25Speaker 1: we're doing now. Haunting fishing is that much better now
- 50:29Speaker 1: than it was in ninety and we've learned a lot
- 50:32Speaker 1: since then, right, Like we're better at it, so That's
- 50:35Speaker 1: where the struggle becomes because some people are so offended
- 50:38Speaker 1: by the idea of thinking about jaguar recovery. But then
- 50:40Speaker 1: it's like you say, any like how do you decide?
- 50:43Speaker 1: Like when we look at like the landscape and go like,
- 50:45Speaker 1: what are we striving for here? Um? Is it nineteen
- 50:48Speaker 1: sixty two? There's eighteen sixty two. I don't really know
- 50:53Speaker 1: the answer, man. The opportunity is so so huge because
- 50:56Speaker 1: of the jaguar issue is an international issue, and Mexico
- 51:00Speaker 1: is so diverse in wildlife. Like if we can use
- 51:08Speaker 1: the jaguars trojan horse like our green decoys, um two,
- 51:15Speaker 1: make some serious back and forth with old Mexico, we
- 51:19Speaker 1: could we could have a lot a lot of positive
- 51:23Speaker 1: effects on our side of the border as well. Yeah,
- 51:26Speaker 1: I get what you're saying. Like the Apex thing where
- 51:29Speaker 1: if you're looking at connectivity for jaguars was a real
- 51:32Speaker 1: trickle down Yeah, absolutely trickle down benefits. I like Ryan's point.
- 51:37Speaker 1: Another point I'd make though about things like this that
- 51:41Speaker 1: it always kind of um interesting to me that that
- 51:46Speaker 1: uh we stipulate these time points is like um, reference conditions,
- 51:52Speaker 1: and we want to return it, like return to that
- 51:55Speaker 1: time or that reference state, you know, and it kind
- 51:59Speaker 1: of I think it kind of ignores, how um to
- 52:04Speaker 1: some extent, the way population dynamics work. I mean, those
- 52:10Speaker 1: sorts of things. The spatial distributions of animals and plants
- 52:15Speaker 1: are always in flux. So to try to take some
- 52:18Speaker 1: static point and make it that that's going to be
- 52:21Speaker 1: the benchmark seems a little misdirected to me. Well, yeah,
- 52:24Speaker 1: I mean I think it becomes especially misdirective when you
- 52:26Speaker 1: look at people the rewilding movement of people who when
- 52:31Speaker 1: they set their clock, they set their clock to the
- 52:34Speaker 1: clsn sn Holo scene transition to the point where they're like,
- 52:38Speaker 1: they were like, well, let's repopulate North America with camels, horses,
- 52:47Speaker 1: the African lion because that's the closest approximation to the
- 52:50Speaker 1: American lion that we had, and bringing packet erms elephants
- 52:54Speaker 1: to try to, you know, replicate the I mean, I
- 52:57Speaker 1: look at that and I think it's silly. But I
- 53:00Speaker 1: look at someone saying that that we should recover jaguars,
- 53:05Speaker 1: it doesn't feel silly. Like I don't know how to
- 53:07Speaker 1: find the date, and I don't know that it is
- 53:08Speaker 1: a date thing, right, Yeah, to me, it's more of
- 53:11Speaker 1: a plausibil on the on the side of them being
- 53:14Speaker 1: able to habitate where they're capable habitating, I guess yeah.
- 53:19Speaker 1: But like the reference condition thing, maybe maybe I got
- 53:22Speaker 1: uh skin in the game. Like if that was applied
- 53:25Speaker 1: to turkeys, I wouldn't have shot the king King. It's
- 53:32Speaker 1: a good point, man. If you said we're gonna set
- 53:34Speaker 1: things back to nineteen seventy four, you just lost every
- 53:38Speaker 1: turkey hunter in Michigan, and well definitely every turny under here,
- 53:46Speaker 1: you know, because there were zero turkeys at that point.
- 53:49Speaker 1: So I'm saying, toying with dates, You're right, it's a
- 53:52Speaker 1: good point. Toying with dates is dangerous. Whatever the hell
- 53:55Speaker 1: nineteen sixty two came from, I don't know, and the
- 53:58Speaker 1: myriad of condition rat and she's like, well, this is
- 54:01Speaker 1: the one thing that's just never the case that I'm
- 54:05Speaker 1: aware of. But if you've ever seen a photo of
- 54:08Speaker 1: a jaguar standing on snow, I would pay a lot
- 54:11Speaker 1: of money to see that for real life. I just
- 54:15Speaker 1: think that's like, it's the biggest, baddest thing in the
- 54:18Speaker 1: Western hemisphere. That's like, that's the opportunity, right, that's the
- 54:21Speaker 1: dream that's still like we can actually reach that, which
- 54:25Speaker 1: I think is pretty awesome. Yeah, I would like to
- 54:27Speaker 1: get him up to the point where there's a tag draw. Yeah,
- 54:31Speaker 1: well now we see your decoy. You're like, yeah, we
- 54:34Speaker 1: need more. You guys are missing the point the big
- 54:39Speaker 1: dream here. More predators eat more game animals. The less
- 54:44Speaker 1: game animals are out there, the less hunters we need,
- 54:46Speaker 1: less opportunity land. He was telling us this thing about
- 54:50Speaker 1: jaguars earlier in the green Room Secret plot less hunting
- 54:54Speaker 1: through predation. What's the point of having that gun? There's
- 54:58Speaker 1: nothing to shoot. Jaguar has got them all. No, but
- 55:01Speaker 1: it is it's like you're asking for something tricky, and
- 55:03Speaker 1: I realized that it's like the thing that like, the
- 55:05Speaker 1: thing that I'm asking for and the thing that I'm
- 55:06Speaker 1: sort of after in life is hard for a lot
- 55:10Speaker 1: of people to understand because because i'm you look at
- 55:14Speaker 1: it and you'd be like, oh, you know, we want mountain,
- 55:17Speaker 1: we want mountains, we want honorable numbers of mountain lions
- 55:19Speaker 1: and opening people's access to the resource. And you look
- 55:23Speaker 1: at something like jaguars, and I think a lot of
- 55:25Speaker 1: hunters be like, why would I want to invite competition,
- 55:29Speaker 1: Why would we want to have another animal on the
- 55:31Speaker 1: landscape that consumes game. But I would just look at
- 55:34Speaker 1: it as like sort of increasing just the like increasing
- 55:39Speaker 1: the species abundance you talking about. I was curious, like
- 55:45Speaker 1: I'm I don't know this, so maybe some other people
- 55:48Speaker 1: here don't either, But like how long ago would you
- 55:53Speaker 1: have to go back before it's like a common occurrence
- 55:55Speaker 1: to see him in the US? I think that if
- 55:58Speaker 1: you I think if you went back to the nineteen fifties,
- 56:00Speaker 1: you'd have there weren't just ones. It wasn't onesies twosies.
- 56:04Speaker 1: If you go back to the hunters where they like
- 56:08Speaker 1: see you one a week, no very I don't know
- 56:10Speaker 1: if you see one a week, but they're very definitely
- 56:11Speaker 1: here and probably a much wider distribution. Yeah, I mean,
- 56:15Speaker 1: what you want to write like some of the best
- 56:17Speaker 1: advocates for mountain lions or mountain lion hunters, so you know,
- 56:20Speaker 1: at some point you can hunt on like jaguars, right,
- 56:23Speaker 1: like you'd have like the Jaguar unlimited or whatever, you know,
- 56:26Speaker 1: I mean maybe not on the foundation, you know, really,
- 56:31Speaker 1: I you know, I mean that's like that's the way
- 56:32Speaker 1: this thing works. Jaguar Limited sure, but that's the We've
- 56:38Speaker 1: talked about that a lot, and that's the higher part
- 56:39Speaker 1: of people to understand, is like what the people that
- 56:41Speaker 1: wound up really pushing to get the mountain lion thing right?
- 56:44Speaker 1: It was mountain lion hunt absolutely, like we want them here,
- 56:48Speaker 1: we want hunable numbers here. We don't want this to
- 56:50Speaker 1: go away. We're gonna ensure our access the resource, and
- 56:54Speaker 1: we're gonna guarantee the resource and perpetuity and and they
- 56:57Speaker 1: kind of drew up what the plan would look like.
- 56:59Speaker 1: And have respect for those animals, yea, like nobody knows
- 57:02Speaker 1: them better than those lion hunters. It's like that, I
- 57:07Speaker 1: love my animals. That's what I want to shoot him.
- 57:11Speaker 1: Here's going with you guys? Uh, how big is a spot?
- 57:19Speaker 1: Meaning you take someone out to a spot when you
- 57:27Speaker 1: okay you okay, yeah, you take someone it's listen, it's
- 57:34Speaker 1: a great one. I recently had. I recently had a
- 57:37Speaker 1: buddy who took someone to a spot and then just
- 57:41Speaker 1: recently found out that they just hunted one creek over creaker. Yeah, listen,
- 57:49Speaker 1: I was there. It's a crick Uh. There was tires
- 57:53Speaker 1: all if yeah, if like the we said, like Patrick
- 57:58Speaker 1: Man as if there's a tire in it, a crep,
- 58:01Speaker 1: it's crep, like if you I know Callahan recently said
- 58:07Speaker 1: to me that a lot of times I'd rather someone
- 58:10Speaker 1: just didn't. I'd rather not go with someone somewhere. Were
- 58:14Speaker 1: you telling me? This was this? Rammy telling me this?
- 58:16Speaker 1: This was I think this is me. I'd rather not
- 58:18Speaker 1: have somebody take me someplace. Yeah, there was you, because
- 58:24Speaker 1: it might be uh freaking sweet place and in a
- 58:28Speaker 1: few years I might discover it on my own. And
- 58:30Speaker 1: now I have to cross off the map because somebody
- 58:32Speaker 1: showed it, Like, don't even show me, because I'll eventually
- 58:34Speaker 1: find it, and when I find it, I'm gonna dominate.
- 58:39Speaker 1: Or if he if he gets drunk and slips up
- 58:41Speaker 1: and tells you where it is, it's a fair game.
- 58:44Speaker 1: So I don't take me there? But would you like
- 58:46Speaker 1: to go get a beer? So what about the rule?
- 58:50Speaker 1: What about the rule? Like if you don't take anybody
- 58:52Speaker 1: else there, you can go there by yourself? That exist?
- 58:57Speaker 1: That yeah? So okay, So so that's what I want
- 59:01Speaker 1: to get you? Here? Is it? Yeah? Like okay? So
- 59:05Speaker 1: so let's say that here's the table and this table
- 59:07Speaker 1: is this table is whatever we want to imagine it
- 59:09Speaker 1: as this table could be. It's it's a mile wide,
- 59:11Speaker 1: it's ten miles wide, it's it's acre state game area,
- 59:15Speaker 1: and someone takes you and you explore that over there,
- 59:20Speaker 1: and then you say like, hey, we're gonna have it.
- 59:21Speaker 1: We go and we have a great day, we shoot
- 59:23Speaker 1: some ducks, and you're like, listen, um, I don't want
- 59:27Speaker 1: you to go back to my spot. What does that mean?
- 59:32Speaker 1: You don't ever actually say that, dude? Yes, yeah, yeah,
- 59:38Speaker 1: but you established that before. You didn't even have to
- 59:41Speaker 1: say it. It would be like it was. It's very onset.
- 59:46Speaker 1: Do you understand. I feel like you're hunting with the
- 59:48Speaker 1: wrong dudes, And at the end of the day you're
- 59:50Speaker 1: like a love your brother. That was awesome. High five.
- 59:52Speaker 1: By the way, you know you can't come back here, right? Yeah? Well, no,
- 59:58Speaker 1: I don't think you put it that way. I think
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: you put it like I think you put it like
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: you're like, you know what, man, it's a sweet little spot.
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: It's kind of it can get burned out pretty bad. Um,
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: I'd love to hunt it again. But we should just
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: be really careful. We should be real careful and not
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: kind of blow it up because it's not good for
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: anybody when you blow it up. We should just sit
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: tight on it. If you put it like that, I'd
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: be right back in there next day. You should have
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: told me not to go back in there, dude. Like
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: I asked Ni for some I just remember kind of
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: hunt in general. I have somebody for some turkey hunting
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: spots recently. And it's like thousands of acres of national
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: forests where I was headed to and I said, Yanni,
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: is there any spots? And this is thousands of acres
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: and he goes and it's between two towns and he goes, well,
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: somewhere between these two towns, you'll find something. And when
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: I first read the text, I wrote back like, thanks man,
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: you're such a good friend. And then I got there,
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: I'm like, oh yeah, oh yeah, somewhere between the two towns,
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: which means the entire national forest. Thanks you. What happened
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: when you went there to turkeys? Right away? Right in
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: between the two towns where he said they listen, I
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: had a situation where I would hunt this spot for
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: turkeys here, and I'd just just to help out my
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: actual question, get get tighter, am it? It is a
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: a singular spot and we would hunt this spot and
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: I'd always ask about this other place that you can see.
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: That means I'm wanted to really because because I wanted
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: to get some people so people can understand. There's a
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: road and the road forks, and we would always go
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: to the right fork, and I would always ask about
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: the left fork, and it was said that I do
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: not hunt over there, but I know there's birds over there. Okay,
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: now I'm getting clear picture. Now the next season, everybody
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: schedules all jazzed up. I'm like, hey, are we hunting
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: opening morning? No, I can't hunt opening morning. I already
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: made commitments to go over here. And I was like,
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: all right, well it cool if I go try that
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: left fork. It's like, yep, have at it. I brought
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: somebody from work under like I was like, hey, now, yeah,
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: oh yeah, I'm not on your get to the right
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: park and he's like you put on there and You're like, no,
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: but I know there's birds there. And it was immediately
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: apparent that this was a very poor decision. And then
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: it was then hammered home upon me for let's say
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: a decade, that that was a very poor decision and
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: to just basically stayed there out of this county by
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: going who's that poet? It was like you to the
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: fork in the road road the wood. Yeah, two rolls
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: the verge in the wood and Ryan Callahan killed the
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: bird and the right fork man was mad that you
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: went to the left fork, or that you took someone
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: to the left took someone to the left fork. It's like,
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: you don't. He's like, but do not ever. And I'm
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: gonna go ahead and remind you this for every turkey
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: season in perpetuity from here on out. Take anybody else
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: anywhere near here. Meaning this, I'm holding my hands very
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: wide apart this gener this like this region of the world.
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: I'm like, well, there's turkeys eight hours north of here,
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: so I guess I'll go there. Yeah. It's it's really hard.
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: It's so there's no way to there's no way to
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: explain it. Spot dynamics, I mean, probably the best way
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: to void hurt feelings and just get very explicit. You
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: get out the map and your circle and you go
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: if I take well, first you have to guys, you
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: have to agree ahead of time. It's like I'm about
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: to put a circle on the map, and if I
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: I'm not gonna tell you where the circle is gonna be.
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: But if you if you really want to go hunting
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: with me in my spot, then you won't go inside
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: this circle without me. Yeah, it's almost like friendships. It's
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: so and you're like this the circle is gonna roughly
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: resemble the outline of the state of Montana. It's like
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: friendships would be there. There's some things that are awkward,
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: but it would really be helpful in friendships, Like if
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: if someone took you to a spot and then you're
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: driving home, you're like, my god, what I like to
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: go back there again? If you could just be like,
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: you know, you just took me do a spot, it's great.
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: I am sitting here really kind of plotting and figuring
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: about like what I could get away with before you
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: felt that I screwed you? Would you mind telling me
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: like like, can we get out the map and talk
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: about your feelings? Should you see me here your feelings?
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: Should you see me with my buddy? Like what exactly
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: are we talking about? It? From blue to blaze red? Yeah,
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: anybody's like if I saw you here, I'd be curious man,
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: not mad. Curious. Curious. Pink or Blaze are sons like
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: a it's like a hunting prenup. Yeah I saw you here.
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: I'd be really pissed. It should be like it should
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: be a layer that you can download on. Its great
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: that that is a good on X piece man of
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: something like. Yeah that this thing like a like a
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: buffer zone app part of the app or everything like
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: that layer is gonna cost you two bucks, but I
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: strongly suggest you download. We had a guy to recently
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: right in a thing you're coming by on Extra Miami.
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: He wrote in and you know when you're reading history
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: books about you know, like explorers, and you were dying
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: to kind of know like where they went and how
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: they're route, Like if you're reading about John Coulter and
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: where he went and his big walk about um, he
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: opens when he's reading history Western history, he opens up
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: on X so he can get a better sense of
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: like they went through this pass and they went down
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: that river and he can kind of follow and it
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: really brings history alive to be able to see those
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: routes finagling through Well dirt myth who's running around here tonight.
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: He's got a great story about he and his brother
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: on a motorcycle trip through uh uh Chile. I believe
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: that's what I said, Cambodia and starts to they get
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: they get lost, and he he and his bro are
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: talking with some folks in this tiny little town village
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: and they lay a map out, a map of where
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: it wasn't Cambodia, someplace in Cambodia, and uh, they're blown
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: away because they've never seen their area contextualized on a map.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: And they were kind of like, we're that close to
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: their r Yeah, yeah, stacked in there. Yeah. That was
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: my favorite story about We went to hunt Dug during
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: we're hunt down in Wisconsin, not on Dug during his place,
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: but we're over in uh hunting with some other dudes,
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: and Doug is kind of burned up that we'd go
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: to all that way and hunt with another crew and
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: we're hunting his town called Elroy, and Dougs talking about
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: Elroy like it's like, oh my god, over in Elroy,
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: you know, and like Elroy is like this other part
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: of the state. It's kind of like they'd be like
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: people you know, from Miles City thinking about Bozeman or something. Right,
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: it's like, oh my god, those people over there in
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: Elroy and going on on the one day, we decided
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: to drive over and sea dog. It's like, we drive
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: like a mile down the road and we're at Duck's house. Hey, hey,
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: I need to help me with this. But um, some
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: of the details about we haven't talked about. The most
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: cynical approach to hunting somebody's um spot, not having them
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: get mad at you because of a technicality, involves Danny,
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: our brother in Fairbanks. Involves gross hunting. We'll leave some
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: of the names out. Leave the names out. My understanding
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: there was my brother was gonna take. My brother and
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: his buddy are taking another guy hunting grouse. People are
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: all surprised if people you can hunt rough people hunt
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: rough grouse in Alaska. So they're going hunt rough grouse
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: and there's a guy that's kind of he's a little
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: bit of a snake in the grass and I've seen
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: his first hand. I've seen this first hand with him.
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: But they drive to the spot and all of a sudden,
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: he changed his mind once they get to it, doesn't
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: want to hunt anymore. Oh, something came up, something came up,
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: and goes home and then he starts hunting that spot.
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: The next day, they saw his car park there because
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: He's like, well, you never took me to the spot.
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: Remember we got there. We got there and I had
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: to go home, and then he took it and then
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: made it his spot, which is low blows like that
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: Seinfeld episode where he's like, no, you owe me dinner,
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: but I only had suit doesn't count. Here's one Um,
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: why does it seem this is me thinking this, Why
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: does it seem less wrong? Two slip across if someone's fence,
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: say and pick a morrel, then it does to slip
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: across their fence and kill a deer. You know what
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: I'm saying. Like that, you'll t there's like a sort
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: of like if you gotta like duck over onto someone's
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: land real quick. It's kind of like what you're doing
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: feels like it makes it more or less wrong. This
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: is from bad when I was younger and we just
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: went wherever we want degrees there, if you slip across
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: the fence and steal his car, it's even worse. Yeah, exactly, Yeah,
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: it's like you're right now that you put it that way,
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: I realized's just like I went across the fence came
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: back with his wife. That was a problem. It's you're right.
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: It's just a value. It's not wild it's not like
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: a wildlife thing. It's like what was the value of what? Yeah,
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: you go and get a deer. It's just like a
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: Ronnella family thing, like, oh, there's a mushroom. Oh no,
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: it can't. I'll fudge the line for a morrel because
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: my in my mind, I feel like a mushroom is ephemeral.
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: And so if I see let's just say, you look
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: and it's like a beautiful oyster mushroom or like a
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: chicken of the woods, and it's just across the line
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: you're driving on the road, and it's ephemeral, it's not
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: gonna be there, and it's already been there, no one's
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: picked it yet, and you just picture it's just gonna rock.
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: It just seems different to scoot over and grab it.
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: I would never do millionaires cross a fence and go
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: like take game off someone else's property, But I would
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: slip a little ways over perhaps to grab mushrooms. And
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: if we're speaking in the context of now, when we
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: were younger, you're basically saying, well, somebody would notice the deer,
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: and that's why I wouldn't take the deer. Yeah, it's
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: probably a little bit of that thrown in. Yeah, but
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: I mean we're speaking. I'm just saying that you're weighing
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: the severity of the punishment as you slip or jump
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: or don't. Yeah. Now, I don't like, I just don't um.
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: I have like I've gotten to the point where it's
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: like you sort of have this like what what's there
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: to lose kind of thing, And yeah, man, I can't
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: get you to trespass at all anymore. Okay, I wanna
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: it makes turkey hunting extra tongue the good old days.
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: I had The other day, I was hunting with a
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: new turkey hunter and you know, the first time hunter,
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: and we're hunting, and we were standing on a fence
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: line ron national forest, and I'm explaining how we're trying
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: to bring up birds off call birds off private property
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: on the national forest, and uh, that's not intuitive for
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: some people. And I had to be like listen, I had.
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: I was just feel like, this isn't even shady, like
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: this isn't like a weird thing. This is just how
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: the world works. Man. This is like if the owner
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: was standing right there, I still I wouldn't like act
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: like I was doing something else. I mean, this is
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: just like we're just playing ball man, We're calling birds
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: off that dude's property. And the reaction of the new
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: hunter was like what that fits that little fits? No,
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: it was it was it was more that that was sketchy. Yeah,
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: it was more like like, well, the minute their car, like,
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: I want to steal that car. The minute they drive
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: off their property, I'll grab it. Ah. That's how she
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: felt we were being She didn't realize this is just how.
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: And I explained to her that the thing that wounded
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: up being an effective. Thing that I explained to her
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: is I was like, here's the thing right now, as
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: residents of this state, we actually own that turkey. That
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: landowner owns access to it and can control access to it.
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: But right now our turkey is over there, which is true,
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: which is true. So we just need to get it
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: back over to the area where we have access to
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: pick our thing that we own. U Um, the thing
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: I want to get into real quick. If we talked
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: about things like that. A lot of times I like
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: to ask people like, what's the thing your most hot
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: on right now? Cooking wise, what's the dish your most
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: hot on? But I wanted to change it up, because
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: there's a couple of things I've been wanting like that
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: I ever heard about that been wanting to make. So
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: I'm inviting you in whatever order to talk about, like
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: what is the wild game dish you most want to
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: make but haven't gotten around to yet. If you need
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: to think about it, I'll start. A guy explained to
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: me recently, you don't even make corn fee. He said,
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: there's a thing called Appalachian cuse. Like when you make corfee,
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: like take goose thighs or duck thighs or even like
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: like beaver thigh and heure it like with a dry
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: rub and then clean the dry rub off, and then
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: you just simmer it in fat until it's tender, just
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: like the same way if you centered something in water
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: to crock pot, will eventually get tender tender when you
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: simmer it in fat, and then you store it in
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: the fat. And he was saying that when he was
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: this guy was something when he was a kid, his
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: grandpa would make venison meatball and then he would cook
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: the meatballs always done or sorry, like sausage breakfast sausage balls.
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: Did you cook venison breakfast sausage? You cook all the
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: balls and then you get them all done and you
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: pack them in a jar, and then he would pour
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: a lard over it and just start like that. And
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: he called the Appalachian corn feet and store breakfast sausages,
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: and he said it was the perfect camp food because
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: they're all cooked and you just dredge them out of
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: their thromb on a pan reheat them. I've been wanting
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: to make Appalachian corn feet, and the only I want
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: to make as if you heard of a duck press. Yeah,
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: Like it's the thing you do where you cook a duck. Um,
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: you cook it away until the till the meats perfect.
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: Hold duck. You cook it until the meat is perfect
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: on the breast, and then they'll cut the breasts off,
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: so you cut the breast officers still rare, and then
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: they cook the duck the rest of the way. And
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: then the duck presses it can trap and that just
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: comes down. It's like this giant hand crank on it
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: and it squishes that to squeeze every last god forsaken
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: drip of fat and blood and goo and anything that
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: will ever come out of there out of there. And and
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: and that is a sauce with which you serve. The
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: duck is pretty damn interesting, man. So Appalachian caln fee
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: and a duck press are two things I like to
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: be more involved with. Mine would be like a redo
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: with something I screwed up a few years ago. I
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: pit roasted a bunch of animal hams, Like, like, how
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: you do a pit roasted hog? Yeah? Yea dark a
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: hole with skits deer, and burned cotton wood in it
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: all night and then put that antelope and I think
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: we put it wrapped him in tinfoil the hams, and
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: then put wet, wired, wet burlap ram and buried him.
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: And I should have known that that was not a
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: good idea because because what reason is that not a
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: good It's just so freaking dry, man, Like, there's just
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: no people were this. We had a big PERI people
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: were eating it, and like if they were inhaled as
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: they were taking a bite, they'd like get antalope dust
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: and and start choking like they had antalope silicosis. It's like,
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: I would love to do that again, but just large
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: the ship out of that, because I think it would
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: be delicious if you did that. Smoke some fish with
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: conwood and how metallic. It tasted, but yeah, but I
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: think it's when you put in the ground out are
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: you really smoking? It's more just like who else like
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: to share? So I'm in h you talked duck, so
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: I should allowed ducks. Last night, Ryan Bustle, he's just
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: sitting right over here. You made this like duck crackman,
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: so like pork, you know, pork, h like cheat your
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: own exactly. It was absolutely delicious and so it was
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: something new that I haven't done with duck before. Now
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: this whole press thing, I don't there. It's actually a
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: contraption or is it something else that you use? You
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: should go look up duck presses because they're actually recorny
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: like brass, really expensive antique duck press. I mean you
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: can also use your truck, but like two cast iron
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: skillets in the truck. But yeah, like a duck press
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: is a thing, man, It's like a mechanical thing. But
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: this duck Crackman last night was like it was delicious,
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: so wild duck skin absolutely and like little teeny pieces,
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: like little teeny pieces and putting that on top of
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: something else, you know, like that was I didn't get
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: to see what you put it on top of I
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: just got to see like that little teeny piece, And
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: ever since I had that last night, I can't wait
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: till this next fall. Yeah, So eat the duck meat,
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: take the pluck skin to make crack ones. We took
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: one time a wild pig and made. One thing we
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: did that was interesting is we made our own sausage casings.
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: We took all that bit I don't know, twenty ft
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: of intestined out of there, and you had to turn
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: it inside out and scrape every last square inch that
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: thing and just scrape and scrape and scrape, and eventually
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: get it down to where it's right. Then turned it
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: back inside out and flush it all out. And holy
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: sh it, does that make you appreciate? So does it
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: really look like hog gut? That dude when we were
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: done with it. When we were done with it, it
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: was no different than any brought you ever had. It
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: was just a labor intensive process to scrape it down.
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: When you got in your hand, it's like an umbilical
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: cord and you scrape it until it's thin, until it
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: thin thin, and it's it's it's tempted. But we made
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: like we made the odds. We made it we made
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: the cracklings. Yeah, we made the cracklings. It was really good.
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: But I never thought I'm not ready to drop this.
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: I never thought to try it with Um, I'm not.
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: I'm not wanting to let that quite stand the way,
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: speaking of all those topics that we sort of covered
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: numerous times, and he's gonna let him, you know, let
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: him be. Yeah, this seems like, yeah, he's always make
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: trying to make me look like a Unich on stage.
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: I no, Um, it's to my benefit, it's some I realized. Uh,
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: And I like you to go your own path in life.
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: It's to my great benefit that you did not have children,
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: because um, you have that much more love to pour
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: upon my kid. I texted you about this then. I
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: was telling you right now in front of everybody, that
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: I was very grateful like the I was watching videos
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: of you with my kids and just like the wonderful
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: dynamic that you've created with them of just being very
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: much like on equal ground with them in conversation. No, no,
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: I'm not. No, you take this the wrong way. I'm
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: not dogging. I'm expressed it the wrong way. There's the
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: way that people they got a way they talk to kids.
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: In the way they act with kids. And it's nice
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: when someone can just be with them and like hang
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: out with them and not be like, you know, to intellectually. Yeah, no,
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: just like like kids listen, you know I'm talking that ship. Yeah,
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: because they're like there's a dolls and the kids just
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: don't want to hang with and whatever. And it's because
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: they talked to him in some like weird way as
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: opposed to like just get Oh yeah, they overdo it.
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: I'm the crazy man, you know, like, yeah, like, oh
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: it's crazy uncle man again. Look what's this? I pulled
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: your nose off. Look but to my fingers, you know,
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: like that suit yea, let me give my turkey suit
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: on anyway, I'd like to eat some turkey liver pat.
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: That's what I was going to say to you. Yanni
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: just made so you're we could do this because your
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: thing that you'd like to make, Yanni made it. Oh yeah,
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: so we could make you want to make. Ben's already made.
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: We're making up from that whole spot. Turkey cord on blue. Yeah,
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: you turkey cord on blue. I got a problem though,
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: you make wild turkey cord on blue. I've been thinking
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: I wanted to make that. I gotta it's delicious. I
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: got a big problem, though, and I feel like it's
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: easily solved. But what I do is take a wild
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: game and then I put non wild game inside the
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: wild game and roll it up. Is that is this, sue?
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: Is that an issue? I feel guilty? You. Yeah, you
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: need to get some like a wild bore um maybe
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: like a deer hammer's access to your hamd and like
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: cut it real thing. It's normally isn't it normally ham
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: It's normally hamd like poor cam. Yeah, that's what I
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: put in it because my kid likes it and my
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: wife likes it. But then I feel gil tea. But
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: I think it's a weight thing. An he smoked salty
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: hand would probably work. When you're eating deer burger that
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: you cut in with ten percent pork fat, is it not?
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: It's still deer burger now if it was pork. But
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: then I'm like, is a wild game or not? I
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: don't know. It's something different now, but ten percent I
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: regard as wild game. If you wait out the turkey
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: in the ham it's still wild game. It only becomes
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: I don't know at what point. I think maybe around
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: forty percent that it becomes like you can't tell if
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: it's wild game. Any I felt that you might chide
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: me for this because I was over at your house
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: one time when you weren't there and your kids were
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: was his wife there? His wife was there. Yeah, we
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: were eating dinner, the whole families eating dinner together, and
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: we were it's my boss here. We're eating dinner, and
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: they there was a chicken item in the dinner, and
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: your and your child a Rosy looked at me and goes,
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: don't tell dad. I was like, don't tell dad what?
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: She just like held the chicken up. So I felt
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: that you might chide me in the way that you
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: would chide them for eating chicken. No, No, that is
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: that I'm into the court on blue deal. It's so
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: funny that because I thought about making it, and I
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: had the same reluctance you've made it at Ham, But like,
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: what about I honestly had the same thought. But what
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: about like a another option to be like some thinly
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: sliced smoked bear Ham. We'll do that, Yanni and I
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: are gonna kill a bear on bruin there. I like it.
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: You know what I'm gonna cook this year for the
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: first time ever. Yeah, you haven't gone yet, real jack
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: about it. It's just gonna be a thick, simple steak,
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: little salt and pepper, little olive oil, maybe char up
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: lemon on the grill, pitch that on top. It's gonna
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: be big horn cheap as soon as this Montana draw
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: comes out. Because you're feeling good about your point oh
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: seven percent chance pulling that tag. I was super panicked
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: at the office and then we were at the deadline
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: and I hadn't put any thought into it. So I
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: just kind of shotguns in some numbers into the system
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: and paid my money, and for some reason, I'm feeling
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: really good about it. Did you do If you did
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: a U tag, if you did a big horn you tag,
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: you have reason to be optimistic. I'd be pumped. Did
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: you do you tag? I think I don't, like I said, man,
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: it was just like, I mean, yeah, yeah, I was.
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: I couldn't figure out where you were going with that.
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: I was like that I do that kind of like
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: every day, So you want to have it would be
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: like if you were talking about sexual positions and Ryan's like, yeah,
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: there's this one I want try, or the man gets
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: on top and the woman was laying on her back. Okay,
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: go ahead, go ahead. You sound like a man who's
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: been around. Uh, we need to go ahead. We want
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: to move on to see him through the bullshit. Oh
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: that kind of go ahead. No, no, go on with
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: the thing you want to make. Oh you're did at
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: court on blue and you want to make the liver.
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: But we just had to lift the turkey liver. Pat a,
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: can you walk through jacque Pepine? Can you walk through
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: your Jacque Pepine liver recipe again? Jack? You have a
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: yolking there. No, no, what do you mean when you
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: said that again? You've already done it? Yes, I did
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: it last year too. Oh just hear them real fast.
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: You take a turkey liver. Take a turkey turky liver.
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: I usually soak it in cold water for a few days,
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: rents out the water a bunch. It's every time you
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: do that, it seems to be some blood that's leaving
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: the turkey liver. I trim it up. I found that
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: they way the recipes for a half pound of livers.
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: The tricky liver is usually coming in and right about
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: five ounces, so you're just over half of what the
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: recipe calls for by just half the recipe, and then
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: you bring it up to temple. I think like maybe
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: a half a cup of water. There's a bai leaf
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: in there. Ah, it's maybe like a pinch of time.
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: It's real simple. There's not much else in there. You
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: bring it up to temp as soon as it boils,
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: you cover it, you turn it off, You let it
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: sit for like two or three minutes. You just barely
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: want to cook it. Um, you take it out of there,
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: you take it all out of the water, you take
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: the baileafal you put into a food processor? Is selling
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: food process? Yeah? More generally you're just talking dirty to
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: me right now, man, Um, And you got like basically
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: seasoned liver mush at that point. And then I believe
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: for that even halved you go with I want to say,
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: it's ten or twelve tae spoons of butter. So at
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: that point again, yeah, you're kind of you're threading that line,
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: but it's so good man wild game anymore. But yeah,
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: you drop them in two tablespoons at a time. You
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: keep going, and then I think you the last thing
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: is like a tablespoon of coniac brandy whiskey, whatever you
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: want um season with salt and pepper, put into a ramicking,
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: cover it and throw it in the fridge overnight, and
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: the next day you have Oh it's good, it's good.
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: They're the butter like the wild game or not thing.
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: It's wild game because when you taste it, it's like
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: it's turkey liver. Man. Yeah, it's like a really good
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: turkey liver. And it's also like, it's just cool to
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: bill to use the turkey's livery because I think the
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: vast majority of turkey livers that come out of turkeys
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: out a wild turkeys in this country are not getting
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: turned into pet terry anything else for that matter. Listen,
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: you didn't turned into magpie or crowpoop. I cubed up
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: a turkey liver, like draft a turkey cubed up turkey ever,
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: put it on skewers, salt, pepper, olive oil, put it
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: over charcoal, and by anyone's account, overcooked it. And that
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: liver was absolutely phenomenal. Yeah, this is a week ago,
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: and I have no idea what happened to that liver
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: during that process, but it was very, very good good.
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: There was a little creek wash in there too. Add
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: that to your recipe Washington Creek. Uh, how are we
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: going to determine who we're gonna who's gonna come up
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: to play? See him through the bullshit? Should we talk
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: about what they get to win when they come up?
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: So seeing seeing through the seeing through the bullshit is
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: our collaboration with with vortex optics because they he'll be
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: cut through. They help you see through the bullshit, tell them,
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: tell them how what they're gonna win what you may
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: or may not. Came out with a revised version of
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: a laser range finder. It's called the new one is
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: called the Razor h D four thousand, and it is
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: a bad mo fall one thousand yards and I believe
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: I can't quite remember which I think out to a
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: thousand you can get um up to the it reads
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: in tenth of a yard. Increments exactly what that's for? Like,
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: I don't dial my skulk in the tenth of a yard,
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: but some there might be some people out there that do.
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: But like it's how precisely top of the high or
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: bottom of the eye. Yeah, Um, all the modes you
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: could ever want. It's super easy to use, very intuitive
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: piece of equipment. Um, I've ranged a bunch of trees
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: where this turkey that I'm trying to kill is supposed
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: to walk by, and it's been great for that. I
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: haven't ranged the turkey himself yet, but it's it's coming.
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: So how I'm gonna pick um the person is gonna
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: get to play? Is I'm gonna have Land give me
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: some numbers, and I'm gonna have broken the room kind
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: of into some sections. So can I just go for
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: it and get our person up here? Okay? Already numbers? No, no,
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: right now, I'm gonna ask Land to pick a number
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: between one and six, three, three, okay, so it's we
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: got the seats broken up in sort of sections. So
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: one to three, section three, someone between here and the
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: back row back there. Now, pick a number between one
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: and uh eighteen fifteen, so fifteen rows back from right here,
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: and now a number between one and twelve, seven and seven?
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: Is it? Bring them up? All right? Oh? Does everybody
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: feel good about that? We're really worried. Guys will be like,
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: that's rigged. That's his buddy. We know that guy. I
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: don't know this guy's coming up here. Pretty cocky. It's
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: your honest wife, kid me, all right, come on out? Okay,
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: So here's how the game works. The game works. But
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: we're gonna you guys can have like a big reunion.
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: He's on the board. Oh, he's on the board. Okay,
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: we're gonna tell you no help from the audience whatsoever. Man,
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: we've had audiences blow our game a bunch, and don't
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: leave after this. We've got more things we gotta take
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: care of. We're gonna tell you three things, three stories.
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: One of the stories is true. Okay, you gotta identify
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: the true story to win the prize. You win the prize,
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: we'll probably give it to go. No, let's just late,
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: but maybe first. What's your name, young man, Eddie Nickolas,
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: Eddie Nikkins. Oh, the writer, Oh, the writer, Eddie Nickins.
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: No ship, we never met. Really, this isn't gonna work.
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: We can't have like a writer. All right, we'll try
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: it anyway. The story is the worst I can tell
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: you three stories. Oh, man, this is never gonna work.
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: Go ahead, you go first, Dot me to go my
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: story first, alright, Eddie. The government of Sweden may have
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: accidentally just created the next best hunting dog. They to
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: make a better service dog using what is it called
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: crisper technology. Crisper technology decided to splice in some raccoon
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: jeans because raccoons are known for the dexterity into a
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: small face dog to make a dog that could actually
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: use its pause a little bit better, maybe actually open
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: up doors to and open them up to help people
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: get through doors. Right. Well, Louisiana Kennel gets word of this.
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: He's like, well, service dogs whatever, I'm thinking of hunting applications.
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: You know, a dog that could climb trees, pulled squirrels
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: off the limbs, running out of holes, on other arboreal animals,
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: I'm gonna try to import him. He's having issues because
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: he has fishing wildlife. He's like, no, no, no, you
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: can't import these genetically modified pets. That's the story. That's
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: the story there, g MPs. Everyone knows that after Joseph Smith,
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: the founder of the Mormon Church, was killed by a
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: mob hung by a mob, that most of his followers
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: followed Brigham Young, who took his followers to Zion. Very
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: few people know that there was actually a power struggle
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: upon Joseph Smith's death, and another man with the strange
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: name of James Jesse Strange took some number of followers
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: up to Lake Michigan where they took the pirating and
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: he would later die in a shootout next to a
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: woodpile on a dock on Beaver Island in Lake Michigan. Matt,
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: all right, Eddie, I'm so enthralled that the rule was
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: only one of these can be truth, only one. And
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: now that these two jokers are done, I'm gonna spit
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: some truth thatcher. So look him in the eyes, and
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: he look him right in the eyes. So the there
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: uh this, this group of researchers UM have been they
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: do like range grass improvement, and they research and they've
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: been kicking around in the Eurasian step and they found
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: this biotype of orchard grass which is a it's a
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: it's a really good uh pasture grass that's that's been
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: imported in the US. It's used a lot in food plots,
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: um for deer um. And they found this really productive
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: biotype that um they want to import into the US.
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: UM and they want to they want to use it
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: in seed mixes and pastures and in food plots. But um,
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: they have to run through a bunch of aphist stuff,
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: a bunch of apist testing. Well, I'm trying to get
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: my facts straight people. Um, they have to run so
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: aphis Yeah, Animal Plant Help Inspection Service, the the regulatory
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: body that that governs these introductions. They had to do
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: a bunch of testing first, and they were doing some
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: um feeding trials with with uh what they were doing
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: some feeding trials with captive deer, and they found that
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: that uh, they that this biotype causes lethargy and servants.
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: Which is they caused type Yeah, it causes lethargy and servants,
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: which the fancy way of saying it causes deer to
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: be sleepy. So now, like fishing game in Wisconsin, a
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: couple of states are all up in arms and they
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: don't want to be released because they had this video
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: at this apist facility, these deer like walking around all
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: their heads down the stooper. There's one laying out in
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: the middle of a field in the middle of the
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: freaking day. And I think it's gonna make hunting too
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: easy another way, So let's get recap. Yeah, give us
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: a quicklycap. Ryan, You got your sleepy dear seed product
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: gonna be available at the big are near you. You
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: got the first legal battle of its type with a
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: genetically modified pet turned the hopeful squirrel dog and you
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: have a religious offshoot wood pile demise. Do you want
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: to use the audience to help you? No, no you can't.
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: He's nickins, he don't need anything, and only one can
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: be three unfortunately. Yeah. Well I'm from the South, proud
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: to say so, North Carolina. Right, Yeah, so I'm not
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: real big on them. My Mormon knowledge is kind of
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: kind of thin. I'm ruling I'm ruling that out. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: the uh. I'm intrigued by the biotype story, and I'm
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: gonna have to go with that because I think, you know,
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: from the South, if I was gonna across a raccoon
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: with with a dog, I'd be more interested in that
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: fort to Penis than I would being it's in it's
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: tree climbing the build. So I got no choice but
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: to go with the one that's really I think it's
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: a lie too. But it's gonna number three over here.
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: Someone not pick the truth. Oh that's happened before, it
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: has James Jesse Strange. I messed a couple of parts.
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: He was accused of policy. It was just shoot out.
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: He was executed. But that's but that's what threw me.
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: Oh you know the story. But you know what I
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: which I thought I had. I thought I had all
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: the facts. Well for playing today, Eddie, you still get it?
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: There he war tech graze that we need to have.
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: We got something we gotta do. It's real important. We
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: need to have tell him who's got to come up?
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: Cal They got a new chapter? Oh yeah, we had.
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: We had vote on new chapters this year. We do
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: every year as as a board. Um, and we need
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: a quick review of the Illinois chapter, Seth Rokey, can
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: you come up still in the room? Illinois members, Illinois
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: whole chapter up here brand Illinois members up is the
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: entirety of the Illinois chapter. Do you kidding me? Really? Yeah? Well, okay, Seth,
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: they're very selective in Illinois. Do you wanna do you mind?
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: Do you want to address everyone and say what you
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: gotta say? They're about what you got going on? Yeah,
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: I just had a quick question for pole Um while
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: we're here. This is pou yah yah ya. Congradulations awesome,
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: So well done, gradulations stay married a long time. We
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: got a chapter they make it in. Oh yeah that
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: was the review. Yeah, I mean you guys are still
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: in so the only two members of the Illinois chapter
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: just got engaged on the stage you tonight, Bi. Congratulations.
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: They just told me they're gonna immediately get busy and
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: growing that chapter. And we got we got a concluder
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: from old Lamb Tawny. You got a time for a concluder.
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: Oh yeah, my timer ran out at ninety nine minutes.
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: So we're good now. So we got uh, we're in Idaho,
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: and so I wanna talk about like an Idaho son,
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: Ted shu Blood. You know Ted schu Blood I name,
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: but no unfortunately. So he was a editor of Field
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: and Stream. So it's a very revered person here in Idaho,
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: and it's something that we've named an award after. And
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: actually uh anthw Locata who was here, he's won that award.
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: Anthon Clauda screaming name, Yeah, there you go. Are you
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: here tonight? Then there was like how hearing? And what
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: we do is since he was like this is how
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: are you in here? How's sleeping? But like we made
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: this award after because he was just a great writer
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: and like to Field the Stream. We give this a
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: word out to the greatest communicator in the world for conservation,
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: the person that's like doing the most and Steven Ronella.
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: We're giving you this award tonight after right here, yeah, right,
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: all right, guys, thank you very much. This is a
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: great honor. Well played. People got engaged. We've got an award. Uh,
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: you know, I don't. I don't know if I have
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: a speech, man, um, try to make a quick speech.
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: I really don't. I've been uh yeah, it's it's been.
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: I've been. It's been a real blessing to start out.
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: And I had like a set of things that I
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: wanted to talk about and it started to talk about
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: them in magazines and books and have just been able
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: to as media has changed and matured and or the
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: opposite of matured. UM, have been like fortunate enough to
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: be like continue talking about a set of ideas and
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: watching my own thoughts about them evolve over time. And
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: it's been nice to uh, you know, wind up in
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: a situation where I take something that's very fun and
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: funny and full of love and full of great people
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: and also something that I know is is brings positive
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: things to the world and brings positive things to other people,
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: and to mix that all up and do it like
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: you know, material written material, or things that you communicate
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: that convey that that that I try to like help
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: people realize that they love the things that they love.
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: I grew up, Uh, you know, we grew up with
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: all the things that we we didn't recognize that we
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: love them. There's all these things we liked, and we
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: just felt that they fell from outer space and it
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: was like we were glad they were there, but didn't
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: give a whole lot of thought to how they came
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: to be there. Um, didn't give a lot of thought
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: to like thanking that they are there, ensuring that they're
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: there for future people. And that's just a sense a
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: feeling that grew over time. And so I've been able
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: to like work that into my work and if nothing else,
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: I'd like to encourage, hopefully encourage people who love to
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: be outdoors and to hunting fish to recognize that what
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: we're talking about is that you love these things. You
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: need to treat them like something you love. So to
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: have the opportunity to do that again and again through
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: time and then be uh get some recognition for it
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: from you guys, um, it's really special. So thank you
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: very much man, Yeah, thank you, and thank you again
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: for everybody that came out tonight. Thank you, everybody, I
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: thank you,
