Latest / Cardinal Territory: A St. Louis Cardinals Podcast / Cards split series with Padres, deadline decisions are looming
Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Well, the Cardinals had their chance to take the series
- 0:07Speaker 1: from the San Diego Padres, they were not able to
- 0:10Speaker 1: do so. After winning the first two games of the series,
- 0:12Speaker 1: they lose the final two, including today a nine to
- 0:15Speaker 1: two clunker. Michael McGreevey didn't have it from the start
- 0:19Speaker 1: and the results soon followed. So the Cardinals are back
- 0:22Speaker 1: to fifty four and fifty three, one game over five hundred.
- 0:25Speaker 1: The trade deadline is like what seven ninety six hours away?
- 0:30Speaker 1: The direction to me is obvious, but we will see
- 0:32Speaker 1: what John Mozelak does just to what degree the Cardinals
- 0:34Speaker 1: sell right now though, just another disappointing series for the Cardinals.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Welcome back to Cardinal territory, Katie and Bernie here on
- 0:41Speaker 1: your Sunday recap. Bernie, you have some thoughts about what
- 0:44Speaker 1: we saw today from McGreevy.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Well, I do, but first I want to throw this
- 0:48Speaker 2: out there. You know, it was pretty cool the way the.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Cardinals one of the first two games of the series,
- 0:52Speaker 3: and it didn't really change.
- 0:54Speaker 2: My overall view that.
- 0:56Speaker 3: You know, this team's got too many problems to win
- 1:01Speaker 3: a wild card spot, even though the teams in front
- 1:03Speaker 3: of them other than Cincinnati haven't been playing all that. Well,
- 1:05Speaker 3: but the Cardinals got some we'll talk about this, like
- 1:08Speaker 3: really serious flaws and areas that are really really important
- 1:12Speaker 3: and so but I was I couldn't I couldn't help
- 1:15Speaker 3: but think though, you know, especially when Miles michaelis dodgs
- 1:18Speaker 3: to like, you know, thirty nine thirty nine hits or something,
- 1:23Speaker 3: you know, But no, it's like a weird game Friday night.
- 1:25Speaker 3: But I remember thinking, well, I was thinking, it's like, well,
- 1:28Speaker 3: you know, this is kind of interesting. Suppose these guys
- 1:30Speaker 3: like sweep this series or even win three out of four.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Hmmm, maybe they'll make it tough on.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Mo or they'll give them something more to think about.
- 1:37Speaker 3: But I think it's just so typical Cardinals. You know,
- 1:41Speaker 3: they're so erratic and so inconcended. So they win the
- 1:43Speaker 3: first two games in the series. Good for them, seriously,
- 1:47Speaker 3: and I'm sorry. You know, you gotta win. You got
- 1:51Speaker 3: to win one of those final two games. You gotta
- 1:53Speaker 3: win the series if you want to jet the President
- 1:55Speaker 3: of Baseball Operations to step up for you. If you're
- 1:59Speaker 3: if if this is like in other words, if the
- 2:01Speaker 3: Cardinals are making the people in the clubhouse are making
- 2:04Speaker 3: their closing arguments, Hey, don't give up on us.
- 2:08Speaker 2: This is why don't give up on us. Here's why.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Well, it was a pretty bad closing argument, you know,
- 2:15Speaker 3: by losing those two games. So anyway, I didn't mean
- 2:17Speaker 3: to get off course, but it is related. Now. I
- 2:20Speaker 3: was disappointed Michael McGreevy and listen, I think he's going
- 2:24Speaker 3: to be a good back end starter for the Cardinals.
- 2:26Speaker 2: I like everything about him, But.
- 2:30Speaker 3: There was a little bit of reality there today because again,
- 2:33Speaker 3: it's not a guy that is going to roll up strikeouts.
- 2:36Speaker 3: So the ball is going to be in play a lot,
- 2:38Speaker 3: and so if he's missing his spots or he's behind
- 2:42Speaker 3: in the count and he sort of has to come in,
- 2:44Speaker 3: he can't really pitch around guys, although he did have
- 2:47Speaker 3: an opportunity to do that a little bit with Matchato today.
- 2:49Speaker 3: But the point is that's what happens when you have
- 2:53Speaker 3: a staff other than Sonny Gray, where you just don't
- 2:56Speaker 3: have a ton of swing and mister strikeouts, you're vulnerable,
- 2:58Speaker 3: and like we saw him vulnerable today. But I also
- 3:02Speaker 3: got to tip the cap to the Padres hitters because
- 3:05Speaker 3: their stars were excellent.
- 3:08Speaker 2: In the final two games.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Talking with we're talking about Tatisa Array we're talking about Machado.
- 3:15Speaker 3: You know, if you look at what they did the
- 3:17Speaker 3: last two games in the series, they were fifteen for
- 3:20Speaker 3: fifty one. But if you look at what they did
- 3:22Speaker 3: the last two games in the two wins, those three
- 3:28Speaker 3: guys thirteen for twenty four or five RBIs five run scored.
- 3:32Speaker 3: So as much as I you know, don't, I just
- 3:35Speaker 3: don't want to be too tough on McCreevy. He's just
- 3:37Speaker 3: getting started. But I also think this game, the last
- 3:41Speaker 3: two nights showed us something you and I Ktie have
- 3:45Speaker 3: talked about a lot, and this final thing I'll say
- 3:47Speaker 3: here then I'll shut up. The Padres have stars. Even
- 3:51Speaker 3: though their offense has struggled, right, no doubt about it.
- 3:54Speaker 3: It has struggled, But it's about other people in the lineup.
- 3:58Speaker 3: They have stars. And when the chips are down, as
- 4:01Speaker 3: we saw this weekend, and the Cardinals learn, you know,
- 4:04Speaker 3: you're not going to hold them down. You know you're
- 4:06Speaker 3: not going to keep uh Tatise and man Shadow and arrays,
- 4:11Speaker 3: you know, from doing serious damage when San Diego's got
- 4:15Speaker 3: to win two games to least tie that series. So
- 4:19Speaker 3: we saw the difference that star power can make. And
- 4:22Speaker 3: I think that was another takeaway from the series.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, we've we beat this too. We've talked
- 4:29Speaker 1: about it so often, just the lack of star power
- 4:31Speaker 1: from the Cardinals, and it's it's true. You go out
- 4:33Speaker 1: there and you know you have Nolan Arnatto whose decline
- 4:36Speaker 1: has been steady. Wilson Contreras is probably the household name
- 4:40Speaker 1: of this franchise at this point. But it's not like
- 4:42Speaker 1: it's a star sutted roster. It's the exact opposite. And
- 4:45Speaker 1: that was the design of this season. You're not going
- 4:46Speaker 1: to go out and stack your roster with free agents
- 4:49Speaker 1: signings that because that's not what the Cardinals elected to
- 4:52Speaker 1: do or said they were going to do it at the
- 4:53Speaker 1: start of the season. I will say, not a good
- 4:56Speaker 1: day for Michael McGreevy for INDs nine hits, seven in
- 4:59Speaker 1: runs just to strikeouts. And I think Michael McGreevey is
- 5:03Speaker 1: going to be a sturdy middle of the rotation option.
- 5:06Speaker 1: But he is the prototype, the typical Cardinal prototype of
- 5:10Speaker 1: pitch to contact. And we have seen, specifically over the
- 5:13Speaker 1: second half of June and all of July, the detriments
- 5:16Speaker 1: of having a fully pitched to contact staff outside of
- 5:18Speaker 1: sunny Gray. So some days are going to look like
- 5:21Speaker 1: this for Michael McGreevy. The key for him going forward
- 5:24Speaker 1: is a limiting it so it's not as continuous as
- 5:27Speaker 1: it was for Eric Fetti, as it sometimes is for
- 5:29Speaker 1: Miles Michaelis and for Andre Pilante. I liked what McGreevy
- 5:33Speaker 1: said after the game. He said, straight up, I wasn't
- 5:36Speaker 1: good today. Getting first two strikes on Tatis was great,
- 5:39Speaker 1: and then walking him to start the game was unacceptable.
- 5:42Speaker 1: That just can't happen. And I thought that was really
- 5:44Speaker 1: refreshing to just off the bat with you, without us
- 5:47Speaker 1: really even having to dive into these questions. Him just
- 5:49Speaker 1: say yeah, I can't do that. I can't do that
- 5:50Speaker 1: as a pitch to contact guy. I can't be walking
- 5:52Speaker 1: guys to start the game. So no, he doesn't have
- 5:55Speaker 1: a lot of swing and miss, just like most of
- 5:57Speaker 1: the rotation. He's not going to blow guys doors away,
- 6:00Speaker 1: but he understands how he needs to be successful at
- 6:03Speaker 1: this level based on the type of picture that he is,
- 6:06Speaker 1: and that gives me a little bit more confidence going forward. Again,
- 6:08Speaker 1: you're going to have days that look like this from
- 6:10Speaker 1: a greedy I'm willing to throw out the Colorado start
- 6:12Speaker 1: because it's Colorado and it's just weird, I get it.
- 6:16Speaker 1: But how he handles things and his mentality I think
- 6:20Speaker 1: is a refreshing approach and I'm interested to see how
- 6:23Speaker 1: that develops over the next two months of the season,
- 6:25Speaker 1: because we're going to see him the next two months
- 6:27Speaker 1: of the season finally.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Right, And so it's so tough for me anyway to
- 6:33Speaker 3: project where any of these guys fit in next season.
- 6:37Speaker 3: I'm with you, I think he'll go in his spring, Well,
- 6:39Speaker 3: he'll go into the off season. I would think, barring
- 6:44Speaker 3: some kind of injury, he'll go into the off season,
- 6:46Speaker 3: you know, with tentative leaves one of their starting pitchers
- 6:50Speaker 3: next season.
- 6:50Speaker 2: And the only reason I.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Hesitate at all, and I'm probably being overly thorough where
- 6:57Speaker 3: I want to think about every possibility. It's like, well,
- 6:59Speaker 3: who knows what made transfire over the winner. I mean,
- 7:02Speaker 3: if they can make a trade where they even at
- 7:05Speaker 3: this trade deadline, you know, some kind of trade that
- 7:07Speaker 3: involves multiple players with the Cardinals get a young starting
- 7:10Speaker 3: pitcher with term left you never know, I mean, Quinn
- 7:14Speaker 3: Matthews should be ready next season, you know, you know,
- 7:18Speaker 3: the kid they drafted out of Tennessee. You know, he's
- 7:22Speaker 3: he's going to be on a fast track.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Roby might figure into this.
- 7:26Speaker 3: So it's going to be interesting to see how they
- 7:28Speaker 3: line up next year because we don't know who exactly
- 7:32Speaker 3: will be ready or who or who they may add.
- 7:35Speaker 3: So I do think mcgreevy's in their plans, and certainly
- 7:39Speaker 3: nothing that happened.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Today would get me to say, oh, not so sure.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Now if this happens over and over again, then I
- 7:44Speaker 3: think we you know, we have to, you know, we'll
- 7:47Speaker 3: have to take a little bit of a step back.
- 7:49Speaker 3: One of the appeals of McGreevy is that the little
- 7:54Speaker 3: that he pitched he was very, very, very good, but
- 7:56Speaker 3: he also benefited from the comparisons frankly to Ed and
- 8:00Speaker 3: michaelis right, because when everyone's pretty much everyone's like, this
- 8:05Speaker 3: is ridiculous, these two guys, how are they still in
- 8:07Speaker 3: the rotation? Well, I think that that kind of takes
- 8:11Speaker 3: McGreevy and maybe elevates him in the fans mind, maybe
- 8:15Speaker 3: the media mind too. It sort of elevates him to
- 8:17Speaker 3: a level of prominence that he hasn't quite earned yet,
- 8:20Speaker 3: just by.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Comparison, right, So I totally get that. Yeah, So but I.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Know I really like him a lot for the reasons
- 8:27Speaker 3: the qualities that you just talked about.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Yeah, so we'll see, and this is the whole point
- 8:31Speaker 1: of the season, finally from Aggrievy, at least to see
- 8:33Speaker 1: what he has, how he responds. As the Cardinals presumably
- 8:37Speaker 1: shift to sellers and the next two months of the
- 8:39Speaker 1: season look a lot different in terms of competing, these
- 8:43Speaker 1: outings won't mean I don't want to say, they won't
- 8:45Speaker 1: mean as much, but they won't be evaluated as harshly
- 8:49Speaker 1: because once the Cardinals sell, and we'll get to this,
- 8:52Speaker 1: it's not going to be a complete buyer sale. But
- 8:54Speaker 1: once you shift to sellers and your next two months
- 8:58Speaker 1: of the season are defined, it gets much more, much
- 9:00Speaker 1: easier just to evaluate players on a performance basis individually.
- 9:03Speaker 1: So let's talk about that. A little game we've been
- 9:05Speaker 1: playing upstairs is who well the first cardinal? Who will
- 9:08Speaker 1: be the first cardinal traded at the deadline. We know
- 9:10Speaker 1: that John Mozeylak has called some rival teams and let
- 9:13Speaker 1: him know he's listening on believers, Ryan Helsley, Phil Maton,
- 9:16Speaker 1: Stephen Mattz, Jojo Romero, Bernie. A nice call by you
- 9:20Speaker 1: is garnering a ton of interest from contending teams because
- 9:23Speaker 1: he has an extra year of control. Bernie, who is
- 9:26Speaker 1: the first Cardinal to be traded? Or let's let's make
- 9:28Speaker 1: it a little bit more vague, who's the most likely
- 9:31Speaker 1: to be traded for the Cardinals?
- 9:32Speaker 2: Fear Well?
- 9:33Speaker 3: I think a certain baseball reporter at the Athletic had
- 9:38Speaker 3: something about how it would be the most likely Cardinal
- 9:42Speaker 3: to be traded would be Phil Mayton. And I don't
- 9:45Speaker 3: know who that reporter is, uh, I forget.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Who that was.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Let's put it this way. If Mayton gets traded, she
- 9:52Speaker 1: sounds really smart. If he doesn't, Yeah, that's right.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Oh that's right.
- 9:55Speaker 3: I was going to say, Catherine some So Catherine somebody.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Oh that's right, Katie Woo. No, I'm just teasing, of course. No,
- 10:02Speaker 3: I would agree with that. I think I think a
- 10:03Speaker 3: deal with him would be easier to make. And the
- 10:05Speaker 3: and the why, I'm why why I went with him,
- 10:09Speaker 3: and maybe for the same reason you identified him, and
- 10:12Speaker 3: you identified him first as the most likely, but I
- 10:14Speaker 3: agree with you.
- 10:15Speaker 2: It's because I think the hell'sley thing.
- 10:18Speaker 3: If there is as much interest in as him as
- 10:20Speaker 3: we assume, I think Mo will be able to leverage that,
- 10:23Speaker 3: and it's one of those things that will probably go
- 10:25Speaker 3: down to the last day, in.
- 10:26Speaker 2: The last hours, because you're gonna have all the teams.
- 10:29Speaker 3: It's hard to get a closer, you know, a straight
- 10:31Speaker 3: up closer like this, and there are there will be
- 10:33Speaker 3: There will.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Be two or three on the market. It's not like
- 10:35Speaker 2: he's the only one.
- 10:36Speaker 3: But I think the Hellsley deal is a little trickier
- 10:38Speaker 3: because the Cardinals are going to hold up hold out
- 10:40Speaker 3: for a big price. So yeah, that's what I and
- 10:43Speaker 3: I I would who knows, Matt's could be the first
- 10:46Speaker 3: one to go, but it's all the attention is going
- 10:50Speaker 3: to be on those guys for sure. But I think
- 10:52Speaker 3: the other two would go before Helsy.
- 10:54Speaker 2: I could be wrong.
- 10:56Speaker 1: I think may Toon is so interesting and I wrote
- 10:58Speaker 1: about this in The Athletic. He is every contender's ideal
- 11:02Speaker 1: reliever dream. He has two months of control, He's thirty
- 11:05Speaker 1: two years old, He's been in the league for almost
- 11:07Speaker 1: ten years. He's pitched in the postseason every season dating
- 11:10Speaker 1: back to twenty twenty one. He has all the experience.
- 11:12Speaker 1: If you look at Mayton's stackcast page on Baseball Savon,
- 11:15Speaker 1: it's like a NERD's dream. Everything is read except for
- 11:19Speaker 1: fastball below, which is like as blue as it could be.
- 11:22Speaker 1: And despite having virtually no velocity, he's still one of
- 11:25Speaker 1: the most effective setup men in the game. So he
- 11:27Speaker 1: has all these traits that contending teams really like when
- 11:30Speaker 1: you're looking to upgrade your bullpen. Those seventh inn eighth
- 11:33Speaker 1: inning guys make or break playoff teams. And Phil Maton
- 11:37Speaker 1: has the pedigree of a veteran picture of an experience
- 11:40Speaker 1: pitcher post. He's an experience matters. He's been traded at
- 11:43Speaker 1: the deadline before I think three times in his career,
- 11:46Speaker 1: so he has all the experience. This won't be a
- 11:47Speaker 1: new experience for him. The adjustment won't be difficult. He doesn't. Also,
- 11:52Speaker 1: if you know Phil Maton at all, he's pretty like whatever,
- 11:55Speaker 1: pretty straight up, so not a super overly emotional guy.
- 11:59Speaker 1: He's just he's a winning reliever that's going to make
- 12:01Speaker 1: a contending team better. There's going to be a market
- 12:03Speaker 1: for him. He doesn't have like really any money owned.
- 12:06Speaker 1: He's signed a two million dollar deal in March. So
- 12:09Speaker 1: all of these these things, to your point, Bernie, make
- 12:12Speaker 1: him easier to move than Hellsley. I still think Helsley's
- 12:15Speaker 1: going to go, but I think, like you said, it's
- 12:17Speaker 1: going to be kind of down to the wire the
- 12:19Speaker 1: last you know, maybe right before the deadline. There is
- 12:22Speaker 1: there's a ton of interest in Ryan Helsley, but it's
- 12:24Speaker 1: going to be easier to move Phil Mayton. I hope
- 12:28Speaker 1: that Phil Mayton goes out there and has a chance
- 12:29Speaker 1: to be on a competitive team for the next two months.
- 12:31Speaker 1: I really do. And then I hope the Cards bring
- 12:34Speaker 1: him back because he has been a really good piece
- 12:36Speaker 1: here for this club.
- 12:38Speaker 3: I wanted to ask you a question, and because you
- 12:40Speaker 3: you wrote a story, uh talking to Hellsley, and it
- 12:44Speaker 3: got a lot of attention.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Naturally, I saw.
- 12:46Speaker 3: The No, these aggregator sites were just like all just
- 12:51Speaker 3: all over the place, insider.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Says, you know, Ryan, I don't, but you know what
- 12:57Speaker 2: I mean.
- 12:58Speaker 3: I just love that everybody. It's like it's the the
- 13:00Speaker 3: locusts comes swarming, you know. Anyway, No, I found it
- 13:04Speaker 3: interesting that he you know, you interviewed him and his
- 13:08Speaker 3: quotes that he thought it was what did he say,
- 13:11Speaker 3: ninety percent He'll go. I was a little surprised by that.
- 13:14Speaker 3: But let me ask you, and you know, you're you don't.
- 13:18Speaker 3: You're not working in uh, you know, you're not in
- 13:20Speaker 3: the meetings with Moan on them. But do you think
- 13:25Speaker 3: there's do you think there's more of a chance that
- 13:29Speaker 3: he'll still be a cardinal? I just want to know
- 13:31Speaker 3: how you view it. Putting his quotes or his comments aside, Uh,
- 13:37Speaker 3: do you think they're gonna have hard I still don't
- 13:39Speaker 3: trust them to make the right decision. I still think
- 13:43Speaker 3: I still think they'll get all. You know, their heart
- 13:45Speaker 3: will go a flutter. Oh it's our guy, you know,
- 13:47Speaker 3: blah blah blah. I hope they don't do that because
- 13:50Speaker 3: that that is, uh, that is fraught with risk. And
- 13:53Speaker 3: I understand the qualifying offer thing. But the one thing
- 13:58Speaker 3: I would say is high is high bloom? You know,
- 14:01Speaker 3: really want to give Ryan Helsley, who very well, maybe
- 14:04Speaker 3: in decline, not to the point where he's going to
- 14:06Speaker 3: go off the cliff. Does he really want to give him, like, say,
- 14:08Speaker 3: twenty one million next season? That that doesn't seem to
- 14:12Speaker 3: be like something he would want to do.
- 14:14Speaker 2: I could again, I could be wrong.
- 14:16Speaker 1: I don't want to do that, right.
- 14:18Speaker 2: So, so the worst thing that you do is is
- 14:21Speaker 2: ride it out with him. It's like what's the point. Yeah,
- 14:24Speaker 2: it's no disrespect.
- 14:25Speaker 3: Right, it's no disrespect to Ryan helsley Man. But what
- 14:28Speaker 3: would be the point. There's no point in it. I mean,
- 14:30Speaker 3: it would just be the final opportunity to cast him in.
- 14:33Speaker 3: And he is an asset, and then you can't just
- 14:36Speaker 3: like blow it again, right, you just can't do that.
- 14:40Speaker 1: He does. And you know, I thought he was going
- 14:42Speaker 1: to be the first to go over the off season,
- 14:44Speaker 1: and so did he. I mean multiple times he said
- 14:46Speaker 1: this over the off season. He set it going through arbitration,
- 14:48Speaker 1: He said it coming into spring training that he thought
- 14:51Speaker 1: he was going to be traded, and so did everyone
- 14:53Speaker 1: else in the industry. That the Cardinals did not move
- 14:55Speaker 1: Hellsley in November when he was at his top value
- 14:58Speaker 1: still baffles most rival ex executives. Just in my conversations
- 15:01Speaker 1: around the industry, they still are so confused as to
- 15:04Speaker 1: why that move was not made. And we know what
- 15:06Speaker 1: the Cardinals rationale was. They wanted to compete, and to
- 15:09Speaker 1: their credit, they did compete for most of the first half,
- 15:12Speaker 1: and the rotation exploded and the offense took a nose dive.
- 15:14Speaker 1: And here we are, But Hellesley has been dealing with
- 15:17Speaker 1: trade rumors and the expectation that he is going to
- 15:19Speaker 1: be traded for now almost nine months, so he's used
- 15:22Speaker 1: to it, and he was like, this is as high
- 15:23Speaker 1: as it's ever been. I was pretty convinced I was
- 15:25Speaker 1: going to go in the off season. Now I'm really
- 15:27Speaker 1: convinced I'm going to go. It's just a matter of time,
- 15:30Speaker 1: and the demand will be high. Like you said, there
- 15:32Speaker 1: are not that many closers. There are a couple, but
- 15:36Speaker 1: a true ninth inning flamethrower with one of the best
- 15:39Speaker 1: fastballs in baseball is going to command a big return
- 15:42Speaker 1: and the Cardinals know that. That's why I think Hellesley
- 15:45Speaker 1: is going to wait. John Mosellac is notorious for pulling
- 15:48Speaker 1: off a deadline deal at the Buzzer. He does this
- 15:50Speaker 1: every year. It's a very stressful time because just when
- 15:53Speaker 1: you think they're done, because trades can still come in
- 15:56Speaker 1: after the deadline. They just have to be agreed to
- 15:58Speaker 1: before that deadline. So sometimes you know you'll get a
- 16:01Speaker 1: deadline trade that comes through like five thirty PM, even
- 16:04Speaker 1: the deadline is five Anyway.
- 16:05Speaker 3: What do you what do you think? If you don't
- 16:07Speaker 3: mind me asking you a question, what do you think?
- 16:10Speaker 3: Who's the most likely. Let's expand this. I like the thing,
- 16:13Speaker 3: who's the most likely reliever to go first? I'll change
- 16:17Speaker 3: it this question a little bit. Do you think what
- 16:20Speaker 3: are the chances a position player gets traded? And like,
- 16:23Speaker 3: who do you think would be the most likely positioned
- 16:26Speaker 3: player to be traded?
- 16:28Speaker 2: And you know, there's all, yeah, what do you think?
- 16:32Speaker 1: I like this question, And I'll preface this. I know
- 16:33Speaker 1: that we have been put out putting out a lot
- 16:35Speaker 1: of reports about the Dodgers' interest in Brendan Donovan. That's legit,
- 16:38Speaker 1: that's real. They want him. Of course, teams want Brendan Donovan.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Why wouldn't you. He's a winning player. But teams can
- 16:44Speaker 1: have interest all they want. It doesn't matter if the
- 16:47Speaker 1: other team has no interest in training with them. Now,
- 16:50Speaker 1: I'm not saying the Cardinals have zero interest in training
- 16:52Speaker 1: Brennan Donovan. I am saying that return is going to
- 16:55Speaker 1: have to be colossal. They are rightfully asking for a lot,
- 16:59Speaker 1: which means the likely of any Donovan deal being traded
- 17:01Speaker 1: remains remarkably slim. The only reason we're going to still
- 17:04Speaker 1: keep bringing this up is because we know the Dodgers
- 17:07Speaker 1: are in play, and you can't count the Dodgers out
- 17:09Speaker 1: from anything, and they're one of the rare teams that
- 17:11Speaker 1: have a ton of pieces of the Cardinals could be
- 17:13Speaker 1: interested in as they move towards the future. I don't
- 17:15Speaker 1: want to bring this into a debate as if the
- 17:16Speaker 1: Cardinals should trade Donovan or should not. I don't want
- 17:21Speaker 1: them to, but I understand why from a business standpoint
- 17:24Speaker 1: that would be the case. I don't think they're going to.
- 17:26Speaker 1: I don't think the Cardinals, as we sit here on
- 17:29Speaker 1: July twenty seventh, one game over five hundred, still have
- 17:32Speaker 1: not definitively declared a decision, are going to do a
- 17:35Speaker 1: big fire sale. I think they're going to offload the
- 17:37Speaker 1: guys that are rentals that are on expiring deals. Maybe
- 17:41Speaker 1: you're listening on Jojo Romero because he has some value,
- 17:44Speaker 1: But the position players that have garnered the most interest
- 17:47Speaker 1: are Donovan, Herrera, Burlason, and now bar and I don't
- 17:51Speaker 1: see now as the time to trade them. We could
- 17:54Speaker 1: have entirely different conversations in the off season about those
- 17:57Speaker 1: four guys, but I would give the Cardinals trading a
- 18:01Speaker 1: key position player before July thirty first. Those are really
- 18:05Speaker 1: slim ods for me. Bernie.
- 18:07Speaker 2: I would agree with you that they're slim odds. But
- 18:10Speaker 2: I'll say this.
- 18:11Speaker 1: I'll say this, Bernie. Sure, the Sandluis Cardinals have traded
- 18:16Speaker 1: Eric Fetty to the Braves in exchange for cash considerations
- 18:19Speaker 1: or a player to be named later. So Eric Fetty
- 18:22Speaker 1: finds a home. Atlanta transfers Grant home to the sixty
- 18:25Speaker 1: day injured list. He's a brave all right, breaking good
- 18:28Speaker 1: for him, Okay.
- 18:29Speaker 2: I mean I hope he because he's a fine fellow.
- 18:31Speaker 2: I hope he good.
- 18:33Speaker 1: Great dude handled what was a very trying eight weeks
- 18:37Speaker 1: of his career with absolute class and professionalism. And I
- 18:40Speaker 1: appreciate that.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Yeah, much respect to him. No, Okay, I'll say this,
- 18:44Speaker 2: I agree with you.
- 18:45Speaker 3: I would say, you know, I would if I had
- 18:47Speaker 3: a handicap, I'd say I'd be really really surprised if
- 18:49Speaker 3: they trade Brendan Donovan. But I will I'll go I'm
- 18:53Speaker 3: going to have a different take on this. But I've
- 18:55Speaker 3: been thinking about it a lot this weekend. It's because
- 18:59Speaker 3: you know, they have like Gray would be, even though
- 19:02Speaker 3: he's been slumping lately, where there'd be a lot, a
- 19:04Speaker 3: ton of interes in Gray if they could just trade
- 19:06Speaker 3: him and then no trade things, wasn't there, sat I
- 19:08Speaker 3: think there's teams looking for right handed bats all over
- 19:11Speaker 3: the place, so contrarists there'd be a market for him,
- 19:13Speaker 3: especially the way he's playing first base. There's no doubt
- 19:16Speaker 3: in my mind. So but let's take the no trade
- 19:19Speaker 3: clause guys out of this. And I'm looking at him like, well,
- 19:23Speaker 3: for a team that thinks that can win a World
- 19:25Speaker 3: Series in the next two or three years, and a
- 19:27Speaker 3: team that knows if you get Brennan Donovan, you get
- 19:29Speaker 3: the rest of this year and then you got two
- 19:31Speaker 3: more years of control before he becomes a free agent. Right,
- 19:35Speaker 3: And I look at Brendan Donovan and see the thing,
- 19:38Speaker 3: I'm gonna feel like such a horrible, horrible person here.
- 19:42Speaker 3: I'm just gonna feel like a really bad guy. I
- 19:46Speaker 3: think he's a really good player. I love him like
- 19:49Speaker 3: he's probably my favorite guy to watch. But that has
- 19:52Speaker 3: nothing to do with whether they should trade him or not.
- 19:54Speaker 3: My point being I've been around in Saint Louis a
- 19:57Speaker 3: long time and here I go again. Sounded like the
- 19:59Speaker 3: old you old know it all, And I don't mean to.
- 20:02Speaker 3: I think because the lack of star power with the
- 20:05Speaker 3: Cardinals the way it's the gender. It's just kind of regressed,
- 20:09Speaker 3: you know, with the previous regime and all those that
- 20:11Speaker 3: previous era, all the stars they had, it was unbelievable,
- 20:14Speaker 3: and now it's going to the opposite extreme where they
- 20:17Speaker 3: don't have like one really big star. They have some
- 20:20Speaker 3: really good dudes, but not that one and a huge star.
- 20:23Speaker 3: I think there's always been a tendency in this market.
- 20:26Speaker 3: I think it starts with the Cardinals themselves in a
- 20:29Speaker 3: situation like this, where Brendan Donovan is someone that the
- 20:33Speaker 3: fans love, he's popular with the media, he's respected by
- 20:36Speaker 3: the media because the way he plays. I think we
- 20:39Speaker 3: overrate guys like that. I think we overrate guys like this,
- 20:44Speaker 3: and I understand why. I just explained why. You know,
- 20:49Speaker 3: but if someone wants to quote overpay, and I don't
- 20:54Speaker 3: know how I would define overpay, that's the point.
- 20:56Speaker 2: We don't know. If someone wants him bad enough in.
- 20:59Speaker 3: Is we're really really willing to pony up, and the
- 21:02Speaker 3: Cardinals will make a pretty big ask and they say yes,
- 21:05Speaker 3: I think you've got to seriously consider it. You know why,
- 21:09Speaker 3: There's a guy named Weatherholt who's going to be playing
- 21:11Speaker 3: second base and he's he's you could plug him in
- 21:13Speaker 3: right now, really, and I know they could move down
- 21:17Speaker 3: him into left field.
- 21:17Speaker 2: I get all that.
- 21:18Speaker 3: I do. I'm just saying, let's be careful not to
- 21:23Speaker 3: overrate him. And that's that's not directed to you or
- 21:27Speaker 3: anyone else in the media or me. That's more that's
- 21:30Speaker 3: directed more to the Cardinals than anybody, because they're the
- 21:32Speaker 3: one who makes a decision. Don't overrate him, don't worry
- 21:36Speaker 3: about well if we trade him, boy, the fans.
- 21:37Speaker 2: Are going to be The fans are already mad. Okay,
- 21:40Speaker 2: there were this game. I know so, but do you
- 21:44Speaker 2: see my point.
- 21:45Speaker 3: It's like I'm just saying, hey, listen, nobody, no one
- 21:47Speaker 3: should be untouchable other than JJ weatherhold you know, no
- 21:51Speaker 3: one should be untouchable, period.
- 21:52Speaker 1: I agree. And the Cardinals have had a really rough
- 21:56Speaker 1: time in evaluating their own internal talent. They're in house
- 22:00Speaker 1: player development model is completely outdated. Player evaluation model, excuse me,
- 22:05Speaker 1: and it leads to them holding onto players far past
- 22:09Speaker 1: their prime. Dylan Carlson, Tyler O'Neill come to mind. Just
- 22:14Speaker 1: when you have an opportunity to move someone at their peak.
- 22:17Speaker 1: I mean, you could even throw Ryan Helsley. Good teams
- 22:20Speaker 1: move on that, but they have two A faults been
- 22:24Speaker 1: stubborn on moving their own guys. And I would hate
- 22:27Speaker 1: to see Brendan Donvan go. I think he's a player
- 22:29Speaker 1: you build around. I think he's a winning player. I
- 22:31Speaker 1: don't think he's the star or the face of the franchise,
- 22:34Speaker 1: but I think he's an instrumental piece of this club
- 22:36Speaker 1: going forward. But if Heim Bloom thinks the Cardinals are
- 22:39Speaker 1: two three years away from contending and Brendan Donovan has
- 22:42Speaker 1: two years of arbitration remaining before he's a free agent,
- 22:45Speaker 1: those timelines don't match up with me. And if you
- 22:47Speaker 1: can get a haul for Brendan Donovan right now, I
- 22:51Speaker 1: understand from a business perspective why you would do that.
- 22:54Speaker 3: You got to give it a hard really got to
- 22:56Speaker 3: move no, you really really got to think about it.
- 22:59Speaker 3: May if they got every if they said well here's
- 23:02Speaker 3: what it's going to take and the other team said okay,
- 23:04Speaker 3: but then you got to go okay, deal.
- 23:06Speaker 2: You just got to do it.
- 23:07Speaker 3: If everything you ask they say yes, what's the point
- 23:10Speaker 3: of asking them if you're not.
- 23:12Speaker 2: Going to agree to it. If they give you everything.
- 23:13Speaker 3: You ask for, and I will say this, and I
- 23:16Speaker 3: don't think this is influencing me. I really don't, but
- 23:20Speaker 3: I was just like looking, and if you throw in
- 23:22Speaker 3: today's game, like his last thirty three games, he's hitting
- 23:26Speaker 3: around two seventeen to eighteen. His own base percentage, he's
- 23:31Speaker 3: under three hundred. So the only reason I bring that
- 23:35Speaker 3: up it's because something you just said.
- 23:39Speaker 2: The Cardinals.
- 23:40Speaker 3: Maybe when a player has been at his best and
- 23:44Speaker 3: then maybe there's some signs that his best is not
- 23:47Speaker 3: going to hold up over time, and you see signs
- 23:50Speaker 3: where maybe, okay, he kind of hit his he kind
- 23:53Speaker 3: of hit his peak this season, and he really hasn't
- 23:56Speaker 3: been all that good the last month month, five weeks.
- 23:59Speaker 2: Maybe this is that if someone blows us away.
- 24:03Speaker 3: Who knows, maybe this time we should get ahead of
- 24:05Speaker 3: the curve a little bit rather than waiting too long.
- 24:07Speaker 3: So I have all these ideas in my head. Some
- 24:10Speaker 3: of them probably don't make sense. Some of them do
- 24:12Speaker 3: make sense, But I'm just saying, don't you can't say
- 24:15Speaker 3: no to anything. If you're the Cardinals, You've got to
- 24:18Speaker 3: collect as much talent as you can.
- 24:20Speaker 1: You can't and we'll see if that actually is how
- 24:23Speaker 1: things go down. Come July thirty. First, we got to
- 24:26Speaker 1: get to our Draft Kings segment. We've got a couple
- 24:29Speaker 1: players to watch in this upcoming series against the Miami Marlins.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Let's get to it all right. Our Draft Kings player
- 24:40Speaker 1: to player spotlight powered by DraftKings did not do that
- 24:43Speaker 1: intro right. A lot of multitasking involved on this one.
- 24:47Speaker 1: I want to show you about Bernie again. I think
- 24:49Speaker 1: you were spot on on why on teams being intrigued
- 24:53Speaker 1: by Jojo Romero. Let's look at Jojo Romero's stats real quick,
- 24:57Speaker 1: and we know how to start this season started for him.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Many of us clamoring for him to be to go
- 25:02Speaker 1: back to Memphis. But overall, forty games to twelve bra
- 25:07Speaker 1: thirty four strikeouts and thirty four innings. Uh, just pretty
- 25:12Speaker 1: strong from the left side. And I think Jojo Romero,
- 25:16Speaker 1: who has one more year left before he's a free agent,
- 25:18Speaker 1: so one year remaining of team control will be I
- 25:22Speaker 1: like how the Cardinals just now announced that trade for
- 25:24Speaker 1: Eric Fetti. The Braves announced it like fifteen minutes ago.
- 25:27Speaker 1: All right, thank you. So he's he's a weapon for
- 25:33Speaker 1: me for a contending club, and he's interesting because he's
- 25:36Speaker 1: one of those relievers the rare relievers the Cardinals are
- 25:38Speaker 1: listening on. That's not a rental. And I wonder if
- 25:41Speaker 1: a team like the Padres or a team like the
- 25:44Speaker 1: Dodgers who is looking for relief help, would be interested
- 25:47Speaker 1: in a Jojo Romero. What do you think?
- 25:50Speaker 2: Listen?
- 25:50Speaker 3: I I'm not saying this to pat myself on the back,
- 25:53Speaker 3: but I've been.
- 25:54Speaker 2: But I've been on this for about two or three
- 25:55Speaker 2: weeks because the reason why is because Jojo Romero got
- 25:58Speaker 2: off to such a terrible start.
- 26:00Speaker 3: There's an assumption that, Okay, well, you know, he's all right,
- 26:03Speaker 3: he's not bad, he's pretty good, that kind of thing.
- 26:06Speaker 3: But there was some just some problems he had last year,
- 26:09Speaker 3: and then the problems he had most of April this year.
- 26:11Speaker 2: You know, you're you kind of like I think.
- 26:15Speaker 3: I think I'm gonna speak for myself. I didn't realize
- 26:17Speaker 3: just how great he's been. So let's go back to
- 26:22Speaker 3: starting April to twenty seventh. Right, He's made twenty nine
- 26:26Speaker 3: relief appearances.
- 26:27Speaker 2: He's got a.
- 26:28Speaker 3: Zero point three six ERA, and he's in terms of
- 26:31Speaker 3: inherited runners, he's inherited fifteen.
- 26:34Speaker 2: None of them have scored. Now, I mean a zero point.
- 26:39Speaker 3: Thirty sixty ra since April to twenty seventh and fifteenth
- 26:42Speaker 3: for fifteen and preventing runners from scoring. He's also you know,
- 26:47Speaker 3: he's death on left handed hitters.
- 26:49Speaker 2: He's good. He can get you a couple of right
- 26:51Speaker 2: handed hitters out.
- 26:53Speaker 3: I mean, and you got to you got a season
- 26:56Speaker 3: of contract control left. I mean to me, he may
- 27:01Speaker 3: be as valuable as a guy like Helsley because he's
- 27:04Speaker 3: not going.
- 27:04Speaker 2: To be a free agent after the season. So and
- 27:09Speaker 2: I think a year.
- 27:09Speaker 3: Of control is a big, big deal with some teams
- 27:13Speaker 3: because it's such a bonus. So I gotta believe there's
- 27:17Speaker 3: gonna be in Well, you even said, there's a lot
- 27:19Speaker 3: of interests been building on him and.
- 27:23Speaker 2: They they got to move him too. They just have
- 27:25Speaker 2: to do it if because they may they may.
- 27:28Speaker 3: If you if you had told me or you or
- 27:32Speaker 3: anybody like when he was in the throes of just
- 27:34Speaker 3: getting battered in April, well they're going to trade him
- 27:38Speaker 3: at the end of July and they're going to get
- 27:39Speaker 3: this awesome package. People would say, dude, do that are
- 27:44Speaker 3: you okay? Do you need to go get a check
- 27:46Speaker 3: up or so what are you talking about? But he's
- 27:48Speaker 3: been that dominant, So I think he's one of the
- 27:50Speaker 3: more intriguing pieces, not just from the Cardinals, I think
- 27:53Speaker 3: anywhere in baseball, for all these teams looking for believers.
- 27:57Speaker 1: I agree. I would be surprised if Romeo was not moved.
- 28:01Speaker 1: And the Cardinals do have some leverage. Like we said,
- 28:04Speaker 1: the Javasay look is in excuse me, it is in
- 28:08Speaker 1: no rush to to sell because he doesn't have to.
- 28:12Speaker 1: He has the leverage here. Contending teams want relievers. Moe
- 28:16Speaker 1: has the power here. Now it's on him to actually
- 28:19Speaker 1: swing the right deals so that will benefit the future
- 28:21Speaker 1: of the club. So if you want to be skeptical
- 28:23Speaker 1: about that, I won't fight you on it. But Jojo
- 28:25Speaker 1: Romero is a guy that could bring you a little
- 28:28Speaker 1: bit of a better return package because of that added
- 28:30Speaker 1: year of control. Bertie, I know our games are over
- 28:34Speaker 1: today for Sunday's game, but do you have anything to
- 28:36Speaker 1: look forward to for your lines for pick six tomorrow?
- 28:40Speaker 3: Oh?
- 28:40Speaker 2: Here's the deal.
- 28:42Speaker 3: They it's tough to do it the way I'd like
- 28:45Speaker 3: to do it on a Sunday because they don't DraftKings.
- 28:48Speaker 2: And this is true of everyone, but DraftKings.
- 28:49Speaker 3: They're not going to post the lines for Monday's game
- 28:53Speaker 3: until tomorrow morning sometime, and then throughout the day they'll
- 28:56Speaker 3: update it. So I want to make this perfectly clear.
- 28:59Speaker 3: You're gonna have to You're gonna have to go to
- 29:01Speaker 3: DraftKings dot com or just enter DraftKings pick six Google
- 29:05Speaker 3: that you'll find it, and you'll have to look at
- 29:08Speaker 3: the menu tomorrow and if you see one that says
- 29:13Speaker 3: five point five five and a half plus strikeouts like
- 29:20Speaker 3: in other words, the wager on the fantasy wager is basically,
- 29:24Speaker 3: you think Daniel Cabrera is pitching for the Marlins tomorrow,
- 29:28Speaker 3: that he'll get more than five and a half strikeouts,
- 29:30Speaker 3: which means he's got to strike out at last at
- 29:32Speaker 3: least six.
- 29:33Speaker 2: Right, then you would go higher.
- 29:35Speaker 3: You would go you know, higher, you would go over whatever,
- 29:40Speaker 3: whatever terminology you want to use, but so you would
- 29:41Speaker 3: you would go with him to exceed that. If you think, well,
- 29:45Speaker 3: the Cardinals haven't been striking out a lot or whatever,
- 29:47Speaker 3: or he's due for a bad start. You know, I
- 29:49Speaker 3: think he'll strike out five instead of six. So you'll
- 29:53Speaker 3: have to look at that, but make sure you check
- 29:54Speaker 3: that line tomorrow. I'm assuming it's going to be around
- 29:57Speaker 3: five and a half, and I'm just looking Cabrera like
- 30:01Speaker 3: his last you know, seven or eight starts. You know,
- 30:05Speaker 3: he's been striking out people left and right, and he's
- 30:08Speaker 3: hit six strikeouts in just about every one of them.
- 30:12Speaker 3: I think he might have had one there where.
- 30:14Speaker 2: It was five.
- 30:15Speaker 3: So my point is, you know, he's got a chance
- 30:18Speaker 3: to do that, and I would be taking a hard
- 30:21Speaker 3: look at that if in fact it is going to
- 30:22Speaker 3: be five point five strikeouts going above that?
- 30:27Speaker 1: All right, So go ahead and check that out at
- 30:29Speaker 1: DraftKings again. Tomorrow's probables for the Cardinals Marlin series Cabrera
- 30:32Speaker 1: Versus Polante. You can download the DraftKings Pick six app

- 31:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I was gonna say I had a for as
- 31:14Speaker 3: far as DraftKings, you know, a couple of weekends ago
- 31:16Speaker 3: I did. Okay, it was just a modest little play.
- 31:20Speaker 2: But you know, I bet.
- 31:24Speaker 3: I picked three three people and they all came through, right,
- 31:27Speaker 3: and so on A ten dollars better made like ninety dollars.
- 31:29Speaker 3: So that's an example. Listen, And I'm an honest guy.
- 31:32Speaker 3: I'm not saying that. Oh Katie, it's no problem. You know,
- 31:35Speaker 3: I've got a thousand in this now. But if you
- 31:39Speaker 3: do some numbers on it, and it's easy to do
- 31:41Speaker 3: because that DraftKings app, all you gotta do is click
- 31:44Speaker 3: on a player if you're interested in what whether he
- 31:47Speaker 3: can get more than one and a half total bases
- 31:50Speaker 3: or something like that. DraftKings gives you the info of
- 31:53Speaker 3: like his trends, like his game logs in the last seven,
- 31:56Speaker 3: eight nine, so you can see the way he's been trending.
- 31:59Speaker 3: So they give you good information anyway, I love DraftKings
- 32:03Speaker 3: and so I just wanted to throw that in there.
- 32:05Speaker 1: There you go, There you have it, Bernier. I noticed
- 32:07Speaker 1: before we wrap this one up that you're wearing a
- 32:09Speaker 1: Foul Territory hat.
- 32:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:11Speaker 1: So for those of you on YouTube you can tell
- 32:13Speaker 1: it's a fine hat, very cute, very aesthetic. For those
- 32:15Speaker 1: of you on the podcast, I guess you'll have to
- 32:17Speaker 1: buy one and to see it. And I have some
- 32:19Speaker 1: fun news for Cardinal Territory supporters. Our Cardinal Territory Shop
- 32:24Speaker 1: is officially open, so we have our own merchandise available.
- 32:27Speaker 1: I'm super excited that shop opened today this morning. We
- 32:32Speaker 1: have shirts, bags, coffee mugs, stickers, backpacks, purses, We'll have
- 32:38Speaker 1: hats very soon. So our Cardinal Territory Shop officially open.
- 32:43Speaker 1: Go buy some merch The official store name is Cardinal
- 32:45Speaker 1: Territoryshop dot com, so very easy to remember. We'll have
- 32:50Speaker 1: a lot more information on that in the next week.
- 32:53Speaker 1: Might even do a giveaway. I love a giveaway, so
- 32:55Speaker 1: check it out. I'm pretty excited. I'm gonna have like
- 32:58Speaker 1: seventeen Cardinal Territory shirts. That's all I'm gonna wear on
- 33:00Speaker 1: this podcast going forward. So we wanted the very first
- 33:03Speaker 1: to have our brand new, very stylish Cardinal Territory shirts
- 33:09Speaker 1: merch gear out available now.
- 33:12Speaker 3: Now you got to go for a Cardinal Territory cap, though,
- 33:16Speaker 3: don't you.
- 33:16Speaker 2: That's a good look.
- 33:17Speaker 1: As soon as that's I'll buy one.
- 33:20Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a good look, it really is. So I
- 33:22Speaker 2: think you need to do that too.
- 33:23Speaker 1: Here's the one I really like. We have these Duffel
- 33:25Speaker 1: bags out like a gym bag almost, and they come
- 33:28Speaker 1: in different colors. There's white, black, and red, and it's
- 33:31Speaker 1: already in my cart. So as a coffee mug, I
- 33:34Speaker 1: love a coffee mug. I have like two hundred but
- 33:37Speaker 1: what's two hundred and one? And of course some shirts.
- 33:40Speaker 1: We have male size, women's size, sweatshirts, crew necks, yeah,
- 33:44Speaker 1: a lot. I knew we were getting a shop. I
- 33:46Speaker 1: didn't know how extensive it would be, so I was
- 33:48Speaker 1: pleasantly surprised.
- 33:49Speaker 2: And log No, I love.
- 33:51Speaker 3: Caps, so I can't wait to get one of the
- 33:52Speaker 3: Cardinal Territory caps. I'm gonna probably email someone and say, listen, man,
- 33:58Speaker 3: I need to get.
- 33:59Speaker 2: Hooked up here. Yeah, we'll see what happens.
- 34:01Speaker 3: So I think our boss Mark, I think he's actually
- 34:05Speaker 3: pretty cool that way because he.
- 34:07Speaker 2: Sent me this a long time ago.
- 34:11Speaker 1: You have a story shop open right now. Go check
- 34:14Speaker 1: it out, buy something, treat yourself. You deserve it, all, right, Bernie.
- 34:19Speaker 1: Four more days until we can put this trade deadline
- 34:22Speaker 1: behind us. Marlins are coming to Saint Louis, for three games.
- 34:25Speaker 1: I know it's the Marlins. No this. They are thirteen
- 34:30Speaker 1: and eight in July. They're road splits, actually not too bad.
- 34:34Speaker 1: Twenty six and twenty four they're six and two coming
- 34:37Speaker 1: out of the break. And the Marlins don't do a
- 34:39Speaker 1: lot of things right, but they do pitch very well.
- 34:42Speaker 1: Cardinals will throw out Polonte Sunny Gray on Tuesday, Miles
- 34:46Speaker 1: Micliss on Monday, and then off day on the trade deadlines.
- 34:50Speaker 1: So look, I've been under the belief that the Cardinal
- 34:53Speaker 1: should sell ever since that disastrous road trip to Arizona
- 34:57Speaker 1: and Colorado. I think I deserved hazard pay for having
- 34:59Speaker 1: to sit through that. But I don't think that these
- 35:02Speaker 1: next couple of games should dictate their course. I hope
- 35:04Speaker 1: they don't, otherwise we're going to have a very spirited
- 35:06Speaker 1: Cardinal Territory episode when the deadline is over. I think
- 35:10Speaker 1: the Cardinals will soft sell. I think it's the right
- 35:12Speaker 1: call to do, even if that means, you know, some
- 35:15Speaker 1: maybe painful baseball in the final two months of the season.
- 35:18Speaker 1: If you're looking for the future, now is the time
- 35:20Speaker 1: to build for it. Let's just see what the Cardinals
- 35:22Speaker 1: do over the next couple of days. Bernie, any parting
- 35:25Speaker 1: words for our viewers, Well, I.
- 35:27Speaker 2: Just you know, the Marlins are really good.
- 35:29Speaker 3: Just a very quickie here, I promise, because I wrote
- 35:33Speaker 3: it down just for this reason so I wouldn't be
- 35:35Speaker 3: fumbling around. You know. They were thirteen games under five
- 35:40Speaker 3: hundred back on June the thirteenth, I believe, you know,
- 35:46Speaker 3: and since then they have the second best record in
- 35:48Speaker 3: the National League. Only the Brewers have been better. You know,
- 35:51Speaker 3: So this is a really good team. In fact, I
- 35:55Speaker 3: would dare I say they're a better team than.
- 35:58Speaker 2: The Cardinals right now.
- 35:59Speaker 3: If no, it's it's seriously, you know, if we track
- 36:04Speaker 3: this back to the middle of June, Okay, the Marlins
- 36:07Speaker 3: have a much better record than the Cardinals, and they're
- 36:09Speaker 3: starting pitching is really good. The Cardinals starting pitching not
- 36:14Speaker 3: so good. And the Marlins actually surprised me a little
- 36:17Speaker 3: because they score They score more runs than I assumed
- 36:20Speaker 3: that they were They're a really good club right now,
- 36:24Speaker 3: you know. They they just completely transformed since the middle
- 36:28Speaker 3: of June. I'm really intrigued by them.
- 36:31Speaker 2: They may I think they have more of a wild
- 36:33Speaker 2: card shot than the Cardinals do. I really do. And
- 36:35Speaker 2: if they come here in sweep, they'll be right there.
- 36:37Speaker 1: But they'll still sell Bernie. I mean, this is this
- 36:39Speaker 1: is the Miami Marlins we're talking about. They're going to
- 36:43Speaker 1: sell the Cady. But they're competitive clubs, so I you know,
- 36:47Speaker 1: it's easy to look. The Cardinals lost two or three
- 36:50Speaker 1: of the Rockies and we're shut out for the first time.
- 36:52Speaker 1: The Rockies shut out a team for the first time
- 36:54Speaker 1: in two hundred and twenty games. Okay, so everyone is
- 36:58Speaker 1: a threat for the Cardinals right now. So that's a
- 37:00Speaker 1: good way to be optimistic about the upcoming series and
- 37:02Speaker 1: a trade deadline. Here we are Cardinal Territory. Good vibes only,
- 37:05Speaker 1: don't forget check out our store. We'll have some episodes
- 37:08Speaker 1: for you next week, and of course we'll have a
- 37:10Speaker 1: trade deadline wrap up. If we have anything newsworthy, we'll
- 37:14Speaker 1: have it up at the Athletic Bernie will have it
- 37:16Speaker 1: as I'm sure, and then we'll come here and we'll
- 37:18Speaker 1: break it down for you guys. It'll be a busy week,
- 37:20Speaker 1: but hopefully we'll have some news for you shortly. For Bernie,
- 37:23Speaker 1: I M. Katie. Thanks as always for watching Cardinal Territory.
- 37:25Speaker 1: I know July has been a little bit of a
- 37:26Speaker 1: bummer for this team, but hopefully this has made it
- 37:29Speaker 1: a little less worse. Thanks as always for the support.
- 37:31Speaker 1: We will talk to you guys next week.
