- 0:00This is Ground Signal Markets and Economy. I'm
- 0:02Tenet. Today is Wednesday, September 16, 2026.
- 0:06The Federal Reserve is in its second day of deliberations,
- 0:09and markets are holding their breath. Two compounding
- 0:13shocks have hit in the past 24 hours, the Senate's
- 0:15failure to advance crypto market structure legislation,
- 0:18and oil holding near $108 a barrel as Hormuz
- 0:22transit traffic remains critically constrained.
- 0:25Meanwhile, the 10 -year Treasury yield has touched
- 0:275 % for the first time since the cycle began
- 0:30its most aggressive leg. That number matters
- 0:33because it is not a signal from the bond market,
- 0:35it is the bond market pricing what comes next.
- 0:38Let's move through each development with precision.
- 0:42S equities are under visible pressure heading
- 0:44into the Fed decision. The S &P 500 was trading
- 0:48at approximately 7 ,585, a decline of around
- 0:52four -tenths of a percent as of this morning's
- 0:55snapshot from Yahoo Finance. The NASDAQ dropped
- 0:58nearly 0 .8 % to 25 ,981. The Dow fell 0 .6 %
- 1:04to 52 ,093. The Russell 2000, the small cap index
- 1:09most sensitive to domestic borrowing costs, led
- 1:12the declines at 0 .75 % down, trading at 2 ,870.
- 1:17That small cap underperformance is a textbook
- 1:20signal. Rate sensitivity is front and center.
- 1:23In Asia, the Nikkei 225 closed Tuesday's session,
- 1:27September 15, at 63 ,484, according to Nikkei
- 1:32index data. The Hang Seng came in near 24 ,715
- 1:36in early Wednesday trading, per DAX Futures World
- 1:39Markets data. European markets showed DAX near
- 1:4225 ,483, also early session. The VIX, the implied
- 1:47volatility gauge for S &P 500 options, sat at
- 1:5116 .97, down slightly, which means the options
- 1:54market is not yet pricing a panic scenario around
- 1:57today's Fed announcement. Calm before, not after.
- 2:01The key equity story of the session is sector
- 2:03divergence. Energy names are holding as oil stays
- 2:06elevated. Rate -sensitive sectors, financials,
- 2:09utilities, and housing are the drag. Lennar,
- 2:12the major U .S. homebuilder, reports third -quarter
- 2:15earnings after the close today, making it one
- 2:17of the day's most consequential data points for
- 2:19understanding how construction demand is holding
- 2:22up against a high mortgage rate environment.
- 2:24Lennar's Q2 came in at $1 .24 per diluted share
- 2:28on $7 .9 billion in revenue. The Q3 report and
- 2:32conference call, scheduled for September 17,
- 2:34will be a real -time stress test on how the housing
- 2:37market is absorbing this rate cycle. The yield
- 2:40on the U .S. 10 -year Treasury touched 5 .04
- 2:43% overnight before settling near 5%, according
- 2:46to AP News market coverage this morning. That
- 2:49is the highest print in this tightening cycle
- 2:51and signals that bond markets are pricing in
- 2:54either a hike today or sustained higher for longer
- 2:57messaging from Chair Kevin Warsh or both. Let's
- 3:01be clear on who is in that room. Kevin Warsh
- 3:04replaced Jerome Powell earlier in 2026 as Federal
- 3:07Reserve Chair. Warsh has consistently signaled
- 3:10an aversion to forward guidance and a strict
- 3:12focus on inflation credibility. According to
- 3:15Coindesk's market analysis this morning, that
- 3:17posture has the Fed backed into a corner. If
- 3:20Warsh delivers a dovish surprise, it risks destroying
- 3:23the inflation narrative the Fed has spent two
- 3:26years building. Markets going into this meeting
- 3:29showed 85 % probability of a 25 basis point hike,
- 3:32taking the funds rate from 3 .75 to 4 .0%. The
- 3:38decision and press conference are scheduled for
- 3:402 .30 p .m. Eastern today. From Signal 4 on the
- 3:44last episode, the FOMC was the primary watchlist
- 3:47item. We are now inside it. The consequence of
- 3:50a hike plus a hawkish press conference would
- 3:52be continued pressure on rate -sensitive equities
- 3:54and further dollar strength. A hold with hawkish
- 3:57language is a wild card. A hold with dovish language
- 4:00would send rates and the dollar lower quickly,
- 4:02but that scenario has below a 15 % probability,
- 4:04according to futures pricing. The current federal
- 4:07funds target range sits at 3 .5 to 3 .75 % going
- 4:12into the meeting. The U .S. dollar index traded
- 4:15near 99 .66 this morning, up just five basis
- 4:19points, relatively flat, which tells you markets
- 4:21are waiting rather than front -running the Fed
- 4:23decision. Dollar strength post -hike could be
- 4:25meaningful. For the Nomad audience, here is where
- 4:29rates stand as of September 15 and 16. The U
- 4:32.S. dollar to Brazilian real, 5 .1460 per ValutaFX
- 4:36data per ValutaFX data from September 15. U .S.
- 4:41dollar to Peruvian Sol, 3 .3683, consistent with
- 4:45XE's historical table. U .S. dollar to Philippine
- 4:48Peso, 62 .84 from ValutaFX and exchange rate
- 4:52historical data for September 15. U .S. dollar
- 4:56to Indonesian rupiah, approximately 17 ,699 per
- 5:00investing .com data for September 16. U .S. dollar
- 5:03to Thai baht, 33 .25 per investing .com historical
- 5:07data. U .S. dollar to Malaysian ringgit, 4 .0446.
- 5:11Valuta FX, September 15. The pattern. Southeast
- 5:16Asian currencies are holding relatively stable.
- 5:18Ringgit and baht near recent ranges. Latin America
- 5:21is quiet ahead of the U .S. decision. with BRL
- 5:25and PEN within recent bands. The wildcard is
- 5:28what happens to all of these post -fed. A 25
- 5:31basis point hike with hawkish tone typically
- 5:33pressures emerging market currencies through
- 5:36a stronger dollar, higher yield carry differential,
- 5:38and reduced risk appetite. Watch the BRL and
- 5:43IDR specifically. Both have current account exposures
- 5:46that make them sensitive to dollar cycles. Crypto
- 5:49is having a difficult session. And the cause
- 5:51is specific. The U .S. Senate failed to advance
- 5:54the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act in a 49
- 5:57-50 procedural vote on September 15. According
- 6:00to CB's News and the House Financial Services
- 6:03Committee, the bill, which would have established
- 6:05a comprehensive market structure framework for
- 6:07digital assets, fell 11 votes short of cloture.
- 6:10House committee chairs say they intend to continue
- 6:13working on legislation, but the immediate path
- 6:15forward is unclear. The market response was sharp.
- 6:19Bitcoin fell towards $76 ,000, trading at approximately
- 6:23$75 ,929 as of early September 16 per financial
- 6:27data sources. Ethereum dropped to around $2 ,404.
- 6:31Solana came in near $97. Coindesk reported that
- 6:35crypto longs worth $570 million were liquidated
- 6:39in the 24 hours following the vote, with Bitcoin
- 6:41and Ethereum positions taking the largest losses.
- 6:45XRP declined roughly 10 % following the news.
- 6:49The structural consequence here is significant.
- 6:51The Clarity Act would have provided the definitional
- 6:54framework that exchanges, custodians, and institutional
- 6:57investors have been waiting for to bring compliant
- 7:00capital into the space. Without it, uncertainty
- 7:03over securities classification, particularly
- 7:06for altcoins, remains. Institutional entry becomes
- 7:09harder to price and structure. Coinbase, Circle,
- 7:12and Galaxy all saw stock declines as crypto equities
- 7:15followed the crypto market lower. There is also
- 7:17an ironic FOMC overlay. If Warsh hikes and signals
- 7:21sustain tightening today, risk -off sentiment
- 7:23could compound crypto weakness. A surprise hold
- 7:26could provide partial relief. Either way, the
- 7:28legislative setback is the dominant force in
- 7:31the digital asset space right now, and it is
- 7:33Signal 4. Brent Crude is trading near $108 per
- 7:38barrel as of this morning's OilPrice .com snapshot.
- 7:41down approximately 1%, but still elevated. WTI
- 7:44is at 104 .10. The structure of the oil story
- 7:48has not changed from last episode's Signal 5
- 7:50watch on Hormuz. It has deepened. According to
- 7:54oilprice .com, straight -of -Hormuz shipping
- 7:57traffic remained in single digits on Tuesday,
- 7:59with only four vessels transiting on that day.
- 8:02Japanese refiners are rushing for Oman crude
- 8:04after a Saudi East -West pipeline shutdown. Saudi
- 8:07Aramco has canceled European crude cargos because
- 8:09the pipeline, which lets Saudi Arabia bypass
- 8:12the strait, remains out of service. Japan's oil
- 8:15import bill has soared 59 % as the trade deficit
- 8:18widens. Libya is threatening force majeure as
- 8:22oil guards shut fields. And according to Reuters
- 8:25coverage in Market Screener, Saudi Arabia is
- 8:27shifting crude via ship -to -ship transfers off
- 8:30Oman's Sohar port. The U .S. Energy Secretary
- 8:33reportedly said the Saudi pipeline could be back
- 8:35in service within days, but within days is a
- 8:38wide window when four vessels are transiting
- 8:40Hormuz and Chinese fuel export curbs may be coming.
- 8:43The IEA has a fact sheet specifically on Hormuz
- 8:46constraints in 2026, noting that Saudi and UAE
- 8:50bypass pipelines together can redirect some flows,
- 8:52but not all. At current transit rates, this is
- 8:55not a theoretical risk. It is active supply disruption.
- 9:00Gold traded at approximately $4 ,338 per ounce
- 9:04this morning, up about 1 .07 % per goldprice
- 9:08.org. The safe haven bid is steady. With the
- 9:1110 -year yield at 5 % and crypto under pressure,
- 9:15gold is the clean beneficiary, a classic pattern
- 9:18when macro uncertainty compresses risk appetite.
- 9:21Gold set a new record above $4 ,387 last episode.
- 9:25It has pulled back, but remains bid. Three Nomad
- 9:30Visa developments to track this week. Thailand's
- 9:33destination, Thailand Visa, the DT5, remains
- 9:37active and valid at Signal 1. The Thai embassy
- 9:40has confirmed new requirements effective August
- 9:4231, 2026. The current location document has been
- 9:46replaced with proof of permanent residence, and
- 9:48a criminal record clearance certificate is now
- 9:51required. Financial proof threshold remains 500
- 9:53,000 Thai baht. Malaysia's DE Rantau program
- 9:57is still at Signal 2. The Ministry of Digital
- 10:00confirmed that the new DE Rantau platform is
- 10:02scheduled for rollout at the end of Q1 2027.
- 10:06The existing backlog is in resolution, with MDEC
- 10:09aiming for processing stability by Q2 2026. The
- 10:13program is not canceled, but operational delays
- 10:15mean new applicants should plan for slower processing
- 10:18until the new platform is live. The Philippines
- 10:21Digital Nomad Visa is active at Signal 2. The
- 10:25DFA has authority to issue these visas under
- 10:27the April 2025 presidential order for remote
- 10:30workers whose clients or employers are based
- 10:32outside the Philippines. No significant changes
- 10:35since last episode. Forward observation for mobility
- 10:37listeners. A Fed hike today that strengthens
- 10:40the dollar makes dollar -denominated income more
- 10:42powerful in all three of these destinations.
- 10:45Thai Ba at 33 .25 per dollar, Malaysian Ringgit
- 10:49at 4 .04, Philippine Peso at 62 .84, These are
- 10:54favorable conditions for U .S. income holders
- 10:56looking at Southeast Asia. Monitor post -fed
- 10:59dollar movement carefully. Three developments
- 11:02to watch over the next 24 to 72 hours. Item 1.
- 11:06The FOMC decision and Warsh press conference.
- 11:10Today at 2 .30 p .m. Eastern. This is Signal
- 11:144. A 25 basis point hike to 4 .0 % funds rate.
- 11:19is the base case with 85 % probability per futures
- 11:23pricing. The critical variable is not the hike,
- 11:26it is the language. Forward guidance, dot plot
- 11:29revisions, and Warsh's tone on the inflation
- 11:31trajectory will determine whether this is a hawkish
- 11:34hike, a dovish hike, or a hold with ambiguity.
- 11:38Any of these outcomes has material consequences
- 11:40for the dollar, rates, crypto, and EM currencies.
- 11:45Watch the full press conference, not just the
- 11:48headline number. Item two, Lennar Q3 earnings,
- 11:52reporting today after the close. Conference call
- 11:55September 17 at 11 a .m. Eastern. This is signal
- 11:59three. With the 10 year at 5 % and mortgage rates
- 12:02under sustained pressure, Lennar's margin guidance
- 12:04and order volume will be the first major data
- 12:07point on how the U .S. housing market is holding
- 12:09up in this rate environment. Weakness here would
- 12:12accelerate pressure on housing -related equities
- 12:14broadly. Item three, Clarity Act follow -through
- 12:18in Washington. This is signal three. House committee
- 12:21chairs have stated they intend to continue working
- 12:23on digital asset market structure legislation.
- 12:26Watch for any legislative scheduling announcements
- 12:29or public statements from Chair Hill and Chair
- 12:31Thompson of the House Financial Services Committee
- 12:33over the next 48 hours. The bill is not dead,
- 12:37but the Senate's 49 to 50 vote has scrambled
- 12:39the timeline and the political calculus heading
- 12:42into the final stretch of the legislative calendar.
- 12:45That is ground signal, markets, and economy for
- 12:48September 16, 2026. The Fed decides today. Oil
- 12:51is still constrained. Crypto legislation is in
- 12:54reset. The 10 -year yield is at 5%. These are
- 12:58not background conditions. They are the signal.
- 13:00Stay analytical. Tenet out.
