Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: It is mixed one O four point nine.
- 0:03Speaker 2: It is just on ten twenty. Now. You would have
- 0:06Speaker 2: heard us mentioned on the show yesterday that the Country
- 0:08Speaker 2: Liberal Party's Northern Territory Senator Sam McMahon, Well, she is
- 0:12Speaker 2: still pushing for the Territory Rights Bill and it calls
- 0:16Speaker 2: obviously to restore the rights of the Northern Territory government
- 0:19Speaker 2: to legislate on euthanasia. As I understand it, it was
- 0:22Speaker 2: brought to the Senate yesterday and joining me on the
- 0:25Speaker 2: line right now is Senator Sam McMahon. Good morning to you.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Yeah, good morning Katy, and good morning to your listeners.
- 0:31Speaker 1: And what a fantastic day yesterday was for the Northern Territory.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I'm just so proud for territory.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Yeah, what happened talk us through at Senator.
- 0:41Speaker 1: So basically my bill was listed for debate last Monday,
- 0:45Speaker 1: but got pushed off the listen y by Pauline Hanson.
- 0:48Speaker 1: As we know we spoke about. Yeah, Now, Labor very
- 0:54Speaker 1: kindly they had a spot yesterday morning for their private
- 0:57Speaker 1: Senator's bill, and they very kind gave that spot to
- 1:01Speaker 1: me in recognition of the work that I've done and
- 1:05Speaker 1: the importance of this bill to the Northern territory.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Well that I mean, it's not often that you see
- 1:11Speaker 2: politics put to the side for what is the right
- 1:13Speaker 2: thing for the Northern territory. But this is a good
- 1:16Speaker 2: thing that that happened yesterday, Senator. What unfolded after you
- 1:21Speaker 2: obviously brought that to the Parliament and where to next?
- 1:26Speaker 1: Yes, So yeah, it was a great show of true bipartisanship.
- 1:31Speaker 1: So what happened is we had the debate on the bill.
- 1:35Speaker 1: So I Spy was a lead speaker for the Government
- 1:37Speaker 1: on the bill and there were several other speakers, mostly
- 1:41Speaker 1: very supportive of it. There was support from the Greens,
- 1:45Speaker 1: there was support from Labor, and there was support from
- 1:47Speaker 1: Rex Patrick. So that was debated until we ran out
- 1:52Speaker 1: of the allocated time spot and now it's on the
- 1:56Speaker 1: paper to be for the debate to be continued. The
- 2:00Speaker 1: debate will be continued obviously next year when Parliament hits again.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Okay, so the first step has happened, Senator, what do
- 2:07Speaker 2: you reckon what's going to happen from here? Is it
- 2:10Speaker 2: going to get through?
- 2:11Speaker 1: Well, Katie, I'm very very hopeful that it will. Look
- 2:14Speaker 1: Labor stated yesterday that they are going to give their
- 2:18Speaker 1: senators a conscience vote, which is fantastic. So obviously that
- 2:22Speaker 1: means that those who support it can vote for it
- 2:25Speaker 1: and those who don't can vote against. That's a fantastic
- 2:28Speaker 1: outcome for them to say that. It doesn't happen very often,
- 2:32Speaker 1: so that's great. So if we get a conscience vote,
- 2:35Speaker 1: I am very very confident that we'll get this through.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Well, look, I know that it's something that the territories
- 2:44Speaker 2: have been fighting for for an awfully long time. Can
- 2:48Speaker 2: you just explain to our listeners if they've maybe not
- 2:50Speaker 2: been hearing our conversations over recent months, what exactly is
- 2:55Speaker 2: going to be included in this bell.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Okay, Katie. Included in this bill is basically just handing
- 3:03Speaker 1: the Northern Territory government the Legislative Assembly. It's handing the
- 3:07Speaker 1: Legislative Assembly back the right to enact laws relating to
- 3:13Speaker 1: voluntary assisted dying, should they decide to do so so.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Then they'll obviously have the opportunity to vote, and you know,
- 3:22Speaker 2: I see whether this gets through. If it gets to
- 3:25Speaker 2: that point, that's right.
- 3:27Speaker 1: It gives a territory the right to make its own
- 3:30Speaker 1: laws for its own people around voluntary assisted dying, a
- 3:34Speaker 1: right that all of the states have. All of the
- 3:37Speaker 1: states have either enacted laws or considering laws, and that's
- 3:42Speaker 1: the right that was stripped away from us twenty four
- 3:44Speaker 1: years ago, and this will give us back that right
- 3:48Speaker 1: to legislate for ourselves.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Well, Senator Sam McMahon, hopefully we'll know early next year.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Do you reckon, I.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Reckon, so Okatie, I'm very very hopeful. Yeah, this has
- 3:59Speaker 1: been great. This has been a long journey and a
- 4:02Speaker 1: hard journey, and I'm very very pleased with what happened yesterday.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Obviously, you aren't going to be running, you know, you're
- 4:10Speaker 2: not going to be the COLP senator come next election.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Is are you hoping that this is going to be
- 4:16Speaker 2: your legacy?
- 4:19Speaker 1: Yeah, Katy, I'm not hoping it's going to be my legacy.
- 4:21Speaker 1: I'm just hoping that I have enough time to get
- 4:25Speaker 1: it through, to see it through to the finish, and
- 4:27Speaker 1: to get it done because the reality is this bill
- 4:31Speaker 1: will die when I leave.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Well, Senator Sam McMahon, please keep us up to date,
- 4:37Speaker 2: keep us in the loop, and let us know how
- 4:39Speaker 2: things progress. Absolutely, thank you, thank you, thanks for your
- 4:44Speaker 2: time this morning.
