- 0:00Hey, real quick, before we get into it, we're excited to share
- 0:03some news. All of us here at that car show
- 0:06are thrilled to be working again with Sheffield Watches.
- 0:10Sheffield, of course, is the storied watchmaking brand that
- 0:13was revived a couple years back by our friend Jay Turkbus, and
- 0:17it's seen wild success in both the car and watch enthusiast
- 0:20communities everywhere, and certainly with that car show
- 0:24crew. Sheffield offers a wide
- 0:27selection of watches, many inspired by the iconic designs
- 0:30of its 1960s dive models, most notably the one Jay's parents
- 0:34gave him in 1970, which ignited his lifelong passion for
- 0:37watches. His Porsche passion would
- 0:39follow. Sheffield watches are high
- 0:42quality, reasonably priced and a great value.
- 0:45There's a reason you can show up to pretty much any car gathering
- 0:48and see lots of Sheffield watches on wrists.
- 0:51Order your Sheffield watch at sheffieldwatches.com.
- 0:55Give them a follow on the gram at Sheffield Under SCORE
- 0:59Allsport under score watches. And tell Jay that car show sent
- 1:03you. What's the greatest experience
- 1:06on planet Earth like Well. Tonight, Lindsay and I sit down
- 1:10with our pal Johnny Lieberman, bearded automotive man about
- 1:14town. He's got opinions and we talk
- 1:17about it all. Car Week, The meal, Amelia,
- 1:20Jerry Seinfeld, Spike's car radio, The Colorado Grand,
- 1:24Getting older, engaging with your automotive audience,
- 1:27Winning the lottery. Johnny's impressive.
- 1:29Pike's Peak run into the true final boss of cars, plus
- 1:34listener questions. And if you like what you hear,
- 1:36tell your friends and do us a favor and follow rate and review
- 1:40the show on Spotify, YouTube and Apple Podcasts.
- 1:43Johnny is a good guy and this is a fun one.
- 1:46It's that car show. Well, welcome back to that car
- 1:51show. I'm Lindsay and I'm here with
- 1:53Ryan. And tonight we have my good
- 1:55friend Johnny Lieberman joining us.
- 1:57Hi, Johnny. Hi.
- 1:59So you and I met through Instagram, but we connected
- 2:04through our shared obsession with cars.
- 2:07And then we've been friends for the last few years.
- 2:10And you, you have an obsession with cars.
- 2:11I just work with cars. I don't.
- 2:13That's true. I'm not that.
- 2:14Yeah. I just.
- 2:15I just label everyone else who is, you know, I don't really
- 2:18connected. Yeah.
- 2:19Yeah. I just profit from them.
- 2:22You're definitely not obsessed with them.
- 2:24You're not even really interested.
- 2:25You're just here. Just a job, man.
- 2:28Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:29Just a paycheck. So you've been an automotive
- 2:31journalist and an on camera host for car related video content
- 2:37for Motor Trend. I think I first learned about
- 2:42you when you were doing head to head years ago, but you've
- 2:46written for Motor Trend, Autoblog, Jalopnik and of course
- 2:50many others. And you're freelancing now more
- 2:55and you just started your own YouTube channel, Driving with
- 2:57Johnny. So congratulations.
- 2:59Thanks. And I have a I'm on a podcast
- 3:01called Spike's Car Radio. That's right.
- 3:03Oh yeah, you might have heard of it.
- 3:05Yeah. And yeah.
- 3:06That's the number one show currently, yeah.
- 3:09And I've been doing this for 20 years, 2 decades, 2.
- 3:14And that's what I have more than two decades now.
- 3:16And I had this other podcast called The Inevitable, which I
- 3:19just heard on Fridays coming back so.
- 3:23Absolutely. Yeah, yeah.
- 3:26So all kinds of stuff happening so much.
- 3:29Well, and you have guested on our mutual friend Jorge's
- 3:32Tormenting Tarmac podcast several.
- 3:35Times. Many times, which is almost the
- 3:37most frequent guest ever on the Smoking Tire podcast.
- 3:41There you go. Yeah, Yeah.
- 3:43You can add professional podcast host and guest to your resume.
- 3:47Yeah, I've been on more. I don't even know the amount of
- 3:49podcasts I've been on. I couldn't even name half the
- 3:52podcast I've been on. So there's a couple times where
- 3:55like an episode has showed up in my feed.
- 3:58I didn't even know about the show.
- 3:59But I think because you were on it, it was like, hey, you might
- 4:02like this episode. Yeah.
- 4:04Yeah, yeah, because you did. There was a whiskey podcast I
- 4:06think you did a couple years ago, right?
- 4:08Yeah, I've done 2W podcasts to my knowledge.
- 4:12Yeah, countless, countless pocket.
- 4:14I was on a I was on a comedy podcast with my friend Yeah, Jen
- 4:19Sturger and this guy Eddie Pierce.
- 4:22And it was, it's called Oh, God. It's Not Today show.
- 4:28Not OK. Oh, that's funny.
- 4:30Yeah. The Not Today show.
- 4:31Yeah. Oh, that was within the last
- 4:32year you did that one. That was a few months ago.
- 4:34Yeah. Yeah.
- 4:35Good times, good times. Yeah.
- 4:37So yes, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm a guest.
- 4:40You're a prolific podcast guest. What's a good company?
- 4:43Safely say yes, well, maybe we can learn a thing or two from
- 4:47you today then maybe. You have been an amazing
- 4:50resource for me the last few years with all things automotive
- 4:54and the industry and journalism and just the way things have
- 4:57changed. And I know you know, our friends
- 5:01Derek Powell and Lynn Woodward say the same thing about you.
- 5:03You are very generous with your knowledge, which we all
- 5:05appreciate, and I'm so excited you're here and to catch up with
- 5:10you. So so we thought so there's a
- 5:13topic that is on at least all of Dan and Ryan's and my minds
- 5:19because it's coming up so quickly, which is car week in
- 5:22Monterey. Yes, yes.
- 5:24So you you know, I think we could say you're a car week
- 5:26expert at this point. I think this will be because
- 5:30COVID. I think this is my 16th.
- 5:34No, hang on. Oh, OK.
- 5:36It'll be my 15th. It would have been my 16th, but
- 5:38it will be my my 15th year because it shut down for a year,
- 5:42right. I've been going.
- 5:43I want to say, I want to say I've been going since 2009.
- 5:47My first one. Yeah, I was, I was thinking
- 5:50about my attendance today and I was there in 97 before car week
- 5:56was a thing. Like that was that was just the
- 5:59vintage races. There wasn't everything else
- 6:01around it. And then one year a few years
- 6:05before COVID and then since 2021, every year.
- 6:09And, you know, it's my favorite week of the year.
- 6:12Yeah. Yeah.
- 6:12It's the best. Yeah.
- 6:13Yeah. Despite, despite what lots of
- 6:15people try and say it's it's really fun.
- 6:17Yeah. Yeah.
- 6:17It's amazing. So what are you like, what are
- 6:20you most looking forward to this year?
- 6:21Because, you know, it'd be easy to get sort of jaded, but it's
- 6:25just such an amazing conglomeration of events.
- 6:28Like what you're excited about? I don't get Jade.
- 6:31I'm I'm excited just to sound stupid.
- 6:32I'm excited about the cars. I don't get jaded by by these
- 6:36events. I just you know, I look at it as
- 6:40just like, well, a couple things.
- 6:43One is, you know, you'll be like, oh, hey, that looks just
- 6:48like that. You know, one of one Jag, Oh
- 6:51wait, of course it is that one-on-one because it's car
- 6:54week. So if you're a real car geek
- 6:57that that kind of stuff is just crazy.
- 6:59And just the things you see driving around are mind blowing.
- 7:02You know, I, I don't remember anything about myself, but my
- 7:05buddy Shaffer, Mike Shaffer, the photographer I took the first
- 7:08year I took him, which I think was 2000, either 10 or 11.
- 7:12I probably 11 I remember we were like, I was, I was trying to
- 7:17explain to him that like the types of cars he's going to see
- 7:20is going to blow his mind And, and he was not, I don't know, he
- 7:23was hearing, but not understanding, hearing, not
- 7:25believing. And as we exit, you know, 68 to
- 7:30get into Monterey or Carmel or whatever, we're going, there's a
- 7:35black Ferrari F50 like just in front of us.
- 7:38And he like, I could see like explode because there are no F
- 7:4250s anywhere. And a black 1 is like, you know,
- 7:45double plus rare. And yeah.
- 7:48And, and, and it's just, it's it's that for a week, you know,
- 7:52so, but yeah, I mean, you know, the, the big easy ones are the
- 7:56Quail is, is just a lot of fun for me.
- 8:00The quail's changed a lot because it now it's like new car
- 8:03introductions. And that's, that's really the
- 8:07last few years, especially since like the Geneva show went away
- 8:10completely. This is where all the premium
- 8:13manufacturers really show their new vehicles.
- 8:17So there's a lot of work, which it used to not be a lot of work,
- 8:20but also just, you know, it's like kind of everyone, you know,
- 8:22in the industry on like 2 golf links or whatever the other
- 8:27called, not a lot, not a lot of space.
- 8:30So that's kind of cool. It's a lot of catching up with
- 8:32old friends and, and talking and things like that, which is fun.
- 8:36And then, you know, you get to like bump into all the industry
- 8:39people that you see once a year and say, Oh, we got to get
- 8:42together. And then you never do until the
- 8:43next year at the quail. But that's fun.
- 8:46You know, pointless interviews with CE OS where they say
- 8:48nothing and you have no questions and it's great.
- 8:52Never. I, I think over the so I
- 8:56probably missed the quail once or twice in the 15 years that
- 9:00I've gone. So over those, let's say like 13
- 9:04years, I've probably consumed like 90 calories of food total
- 9:09because I never remember to eat and I'm always just like
- 9:12sunburned and starving and miserable by the end of it.
- 9:16Maybe this year I'll actually eat.
- 9:17But yeah, I think I've had like an oyster and like, I don't
- 9:20know, like I had a Mercedes lunch one time or something.
- 9:23Yeah. And that's how, that's how you
- 9:24know you quailed correctly if you don't get to the end of the
- 9:26day and your sunburned and starving.
- 9:28But people are paying like 1200 bucks for the ticket or whatever
- 9:31the hell it costs because they say the food is good, whatever
- 9:33that means. Oh yeah, the quail's cool.
- 9:36And there are actually cars on display.
- 9:38No one looks at them, but there's a lot of cool cars
- 9:40there. Everyone's just looking at the
- 9:42new stuff because it's exciting. You've never seen it before
- 9:45because it's a car show now. And then, of course, I'm still a
- 9:50sucker for the Concorde elegance on Sunday.
- 9:53You know, half a billion dollars worth worth of cars on one link.
- 9:58I don't know what you call a golf course. 1 hole sounds
- 10:01wrong. Yeah.
- 10:02Yeah, but wrong. Crowd.
- 10:03Yeah. Link.
- 10:04Family's toe one links and you know and it's the best of the
- 10:09best of the best of the best of the best of the best like you
- 10:12know the quail overstate it yeah the quail will get like a lot of
- 10:17Lamborghini aspatas together, whereas Pebble would have like 2
- 10:22aspatas, but they're the the two absolute best and then sometimes
- 10:26they do get like every Ferrari 250 GTO and it actually wasn't
- 10:30even every but it was like 22 of the 33 that exist yeah or they
- 10:34had 12 of the 16 Jag XJ or X used to be XK SSS, which was
- 10:40absolutely insane. So stuff like that, you know, or
- 10:42like a lot of nine seventeens, right?
- 10:45So it's just it's really special.
- 10:47And plus if you like like pre war stuff, it's the best pre war
- 10:50stuff in the world. And I love pre war stuff.
- 10:52I know I'm old and dying and nobody cares.
- 10:55Kids don't like it and only supercars matter blah blah blah.
- 10:58I know all that, but they're all wrong.
- 11:01Sunday is the greatest, so that's fine.
- 11:04And then I just like smoking cigars at the fire pit to
- 11:06Spanish Bay more than anything else, really.
- 11:08But yeah, don't tell too many people that.
- 11:10Yeah, right. Definitely.
- 11:12At least you didn't talk about it on spikes ever.
- 11:14So nobody knew that. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:16Oh, yeah. And then we're doing a live
- 11:17podcast on Saturday that's become a kind of an institution
- 11:20now. So me and Spike and Zuckerman
- 11:24and Farrah and maybe Jerry, possibly a surprise guest.
- 11:28Yeah. Well, it's not surprised.
- 11:29It's surprised if he shows up. That's what I mean.
- 11:32The surprise is the people are buying tickets to see him.
- 11:36Whether or not he's going to be there, that's another story.
- 11:38Yeah. Yeah, Seinfeld might be there as
- 11:40well. But we're doing that on
- 11:41Saturday. I don't even know what time yet.
- 11:44And there's some other stuff happening, but yeah, that's
- 11:48that's kind of what I'm looking forward to it.
- 11:50Yeah. Car Week.
- 11:51Yeah, anything you don't, you don't bother with anymore during
- 11:53car week, just kind of over. Overtime.
- 11:56Oh God. Everything, yeah.
- 11:59We're to start. Number one and they're going to
- 12:01kill me because they aren't my friends.
- 12:03But like the, the, the Concorde, the lemons, like I got it.
- 12:08I got the joke. It's like a Saturday Night Live
- 12:11sketch, like let it die. Doesn't need to be a movie. 5
- 12:14minutes, plenty got it. I understand and I and I think I
- 12:19burned out for a lot of reasons. I I used to work for the 24
- 12:22Hours of Lemons. Yeah, I was, I was a race
- 12:25official. I think I went to the 39 races
- 12:27which? Really.
- 12:29Yeah, that's about 37 too many, but that's like a lifetime
- 12:34amount. I was, I was a judge.
- 12:36I got paid. I did get paid.
- 12:37OK, OK, there was that, but and then for like one or two years,
- 12:41they conned me into being a judge at the Concorde dilemmas
- 12:45and like, yeah. And it's just, I get it.
- 12:48They're really bad cars. Like, you know, the the first
- 12:52time I went, was it the first? It was the second time I went.
- 12:56Yeah, 2010. I was proud of myself and people
- 13:00have copied this joke since, but I was really proud.
- 13:02I thought it was very original. I entered a brand new Bentley
- 13:05Molson in Concorde de Lemons and second worst of show.
- 13:10I think a funny aspect beat it. So it.
- 13:13Was it was in the worst written category?
- 13:15Yeah, so it was a $300,000 Mulsan.
- 13:18But but really what I try and do is I say yes to one thing per
- 13:22day. That's that's the great secret
- 13:24to enjoying car week is right. Don't run around.
- 13:28It's like people visiting Los Angeles.
- 13:30You know, what'd you think? Oh, it sucked.
- 13:32I, I tried to go to the observatory and Venice and
- 13:34Disneyland on the same day and I just sat in traffic.
- 13:36It's like, no shit, Sherlock. So you know, one thing per day
- 13:40and, and, and that's all you need to do and go, you know,
- 13:45have a find people you like and have dinner with them.
- 13:48Don't have dinner with strangers.
- 13:49Have dinner with people you like.
- 13:51And that's the secret to a relaxing car week.
- 13:54If you try and do two things in one day, you'll just sit in
- 13:56traffic because. Yeah.
- 13:59So. No, I think.
- 14:01Yeah. You shared that with me when we
- 14:03were dinner with Shaffer a couple years ago.
- 14:05Like you're the. The real secret tip is take the
- 14:07Jomo approach. The joy of missing out.
- 14:10Oh, that's yes. Delight in declining.
- 14:12Yeah. Did you go to the Porsche party?
- 14:14No, absolutely not. Guess what?
- 14:18I'm never going to go and and I'm I'm just fine.
- 14:22I've totally missed that. I've missed that Porsche party
- 14:2615 pebbles in a row. Totally cool.
- 14:29Totally cool. You know, you did miss.
- 14:31We were. We were there last.
- 14:33Year, yeah. Oh, I didn't miss it.
- 14:35No, no. But we saw.
- 14:36We got to see Spike and Zuckerman and there was the
- 14:40great scallop throwing. This gal had put together like 6
- 14:46plates of the scallop. You know, appetizer.
- 14:48On one, yeah. Literally a mountain of scallops
- 14:50and she turns and goes and launches the whole thing right
- 14:53in front of. Spike, it was beautiful.
- 14:54Did. It hit Zuckerman no, but he was
- 14:57like real close. He had some new picks on too, if
- 15:00I'm if I'm not mistaken. And yeah.
- 15:04Yeah, it was a fight to behold, so it was worth being there for
- 15:07that. Going to ask you about car week
- 15:11hacks, but I think that's it, right?
- 15:12One thing, one thing a day and then don't try to drive your
- 15:15classic car around while you're there, huh?
- 15:17People who go for their first time, they bring some amazing
- 15:19car and then they sit in traffic and they're, you know.
- 15:23Yeah, I mean, I would hear people you got to take a
- 15:25motorcycle, which I'm like nuts. Anyways, yeah, look, you're
- 15:29going to be in a little bit of traffic, but if you only do one
- 15:31thing a day, you're going to be in traffic once, so big deal.
- 15:34It's like. Going to work.
- 15:35Yeah. And I think what people don't
- 15:37understand, and it's like you were saying you wouldn't try to
- 15:40describe it to Shaffer you almost there's there's elements
- 15:43of it that unless you've experienced car wake, you can't
- 15:46understand because you might be stuck in traffic.
- 15:48But the traffic is like Horatio Pagani driving by in a Pagani.
- 15:52And you're like, OK, I'm happy to sit in that traffic.
- 15:54Yeah. It's not so bad.
- 15:56And really like it. Like it like I think also I'm
- 16:00I've been going long enough now. Like when I complain about the
- 16:03traffic, it's not that the traffic's so bad.
- 16:05It's just there used to not be any and now there is some.
- 16:08Yeah. And it's really just Carmel
- 16:10Valley Rd. really. There's really not any other
- 16:13traffic. So if you're trying to head out
- 16:14to the Quail or Legends or whatever the hell they call the
- 16:17portion nonsense, like, yeah, it's a one lane Rd. and there's
- 16:20a lot of people trying to get there.
- 16:21But yeah, I would, I would say yeah, bring your classic car,
- 16:26yeah. OK.
- 16:27I just, I drive new cars for a living so I don't know anything
- 16:31but I'll be, I think I'm bringing an M5, so I'm bringing
- 16:33the new M5. Oh nice.
- 16:35Yeah. You like that car, don't you?
- 16:38Well, I've never driven it. I drove the M5 wagon the.
- 16:41Touring and I. Really enjoyed that, but I
- 16:43haven't touched the sedan. And they said hey, you want a
- 16:46sedan? And I said sure.
- 16:47So, you know, I'm not going to turn it down.
- 16:50You're kind of unique, though. A lot of there's a lot of hate
- 16:52for that wagon. Sure, a lot to hate everyone who
- 16:55has never driven it. I've never met anyone.
- 16:56There you go, There you go, there you go.
- 16:58Yes, the Internet is undefeated with that.
- 17:02Yes, there's a lot of hate for a lot of cars.
- 17:04It's weirder than you driving me like God damn like these these
- 17:08like, you know, century old companies with like, you know,
- 17:11billions of dollars of R&D and the best engineers in the world.
- 17:14They actually make great cars just because the Internet, you
- 17:17know, has some dumb list of like boxes that were unchecked.
- 17:20Like, you know, like I just drove the Temerario, the
- 17:23Lamborghini and like like, wow, like like it makes it makes 907
- 17:32horsepower and and the the Porsche 918 Spyder, which which
- 17:36hyper car? Right, right.
- 17:38That's the definition of a hyper car makes 875 and the McLaren P1
- 17:43makes 903. And this is the entry level
- 17:47first iteration of the Temorario.
- 17:49This is not the Perfamonte, the Evo, the Technica, the STO
- 17:53whatever they're going to do super Leggero, blah, blah, blah.
- 17:56This is just the base model makes 907 and a little birdie
- 18:01off the record told me, he said yeah, you know, we we got, you
- 18:04know, 200 horsepower per liter 250.
- 18:07We've already done that no problem.
- 18:08So there's way hotter versions coming.
- 18:11Wow, isn't that insane? Absolutely.
- 18:17We oh, I mean, but I mean, just that we're living in this golden
- 18:19era, right of I mean that. Is just absurd.
- 18:22Again, the Internet doesn't sucks.
- 18:24It doesn't have a slower engine, you know, it's like it doesn't
- 18:27have a slower, less torquey, lower revving engine.
- 18:31It totally sucks, you know, You know, it makes no sense, but
- 18:35that's the world we're in, you know?
- 18:37Yeah, Misunderstood. Same thing.
- 18:39I drove the Ferrari F80 like, you know, hands down, no
- 18:43exaggeration, the best car I've ever driven.
- 18:45Best, best drivers car I've ever driven, really.
- 18:48Yeah, I might say that a Rolls Royce Phantom is a better car,
- 18:51but but as far as like handling goes, this is it.
- 18:55Nothing's nothing's second place.
- 18:57It's, it's that good. And the Internet hates it
- 19:00because it doesn't make a loud noise.
- 19:02It's like, whoa, you know, and then actually I drove in and,
- 19:07and in Ferrari, they're like, well, you know, because noise
- 19:11regulations are what they are around the globe.
- 19:13And we just said like, let's not have it make any noise.
- 19:16And, and on the outside you'll just hear the aerodynamics if
- 19:20you're standing there. So it's the sound of like, you
- 19:23know, a mini tornado wishing by you.
- 19:25And on the inside you can hear the engine just fine.
- 19:27And you can, and it sounds great.
- 19:29You know, it's an over boosted 3 liter that makes 888 horsepower.
- 19:33It's, it's, it's, it's insane. And 55 lbs of boost, I believe
- 19:3755 1/2 lbs of boost, I forget 3.7 bars.
- 19:40That's almost 4 atmospheres of turbo boost pressure.
- 19:45It's like the hardest part about driving it is like keeping it
- 19:48out of red line because it's just always revved up.
- 19:52It's like there's nothing like it and the Internet says it
- 19:55sucks. So what do I know?
- 19:57I just drove the damn thing. You know, I think what we're
- 20:00learning is people want a reason to be upset is.
- 20:02That, yeah, I have. No idea what people want.
- 20:05It's. Easier to complain.
- 20:07It's just mind boggling to me. I don't know.
- 20:10I just I'm, I'm, I'm the longer I do this, like the I don't
- 20:16know, the more I don't know, bitter old man I become.
- 20:19But I just, I just like the orthodoxy, the cars only It must
- 20:23be this. It cannot be any other way or
- 20:24else bad. Where did that come from?
- 20:27What are you? Who are you?
- 20:28Who are you going to impress with that?
- 20:30Right, Right on, bro. Like that's that's all you live
- 20:32for? I don't know.
- 20:33I just don't get it. So do you feel like that is
- 20:36something like we've talked about how social media has
- 20:39changed what you do and impacted it And like, do you feel like,
- 20:44you know, obviously the Internet wasn't was in its infancy or
- 20:47earlier when you started. Do you feel like that has grown?
- 20:51I'm not that old, but yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 20:52It's less. Yeah.
- 20:54Yeah. I mean, we can do the math, but
- 20:57you know, like, do you feel like people have gotten more extreme
- 21:00in that way where if, and again, I think they're looking for like
- 21:04brownie points, you know, it's like, it's like, you know, you
- 21:08want to, you want to say the right thing online.
- 21:10You don't want to, you know, well, actually I enjoyed a
- 21:13Tesla, you know, like burn the witch, They're quite enjoyable.
- 21:18They're really good cars. You know, it's, it's kind of
- 21:20like my, my take on the cyber truck, which I drove.
- 21:23I know, I know what I actually drove 1.
- 21:26My take is it's neither as fantastic or as terrible as
- 21:30everybody says. It's just sort of like a pretty
- 21:33good electric pickup truck, you know, the a nice mug.
- 21:36Yeah. Speaking of.
- 21:39Yeah, Yeah. I mean, shut up.
- 21:42I made like dozens of dollars off that mug.
- 21:46But, you know, it's like, it's it's just fine.
- 21:49It's it's it's it's OK, you know.
- 21:52Is a Rivian a better electric pickup truck?
- 21:54Yes. Is a Ford Lightning better?
- 21:56Debatable, but you know, it's it's it's not, it's just people
- 22:01went like haywire over that thing and Tesla's in general and
- 22:05Ev's in general. And you know, I don't know.
- 22:07So I just feel like I said, there's some kind of orthodoxy
- 22:13where you have to say the same thing.
- 22:15And if every single car isn't AV12 manual, then it sucks in
- 22:20some way. And it's just like, there's just
- 22:23a lot of reasons why that's gone, you know, like, again, in
- 22:28terms of like performance, you know, I drove the the Temerario
- 22:33in Portugal on a track called Esteril.
- 22:35And I happened to also have driven the Lamborghini SVJ,
- 22:39which again, arguably was a hypercar, or at least as close
- 22:43as you can push a hyper a supercar into hypercar territory
- 22:46without actually being a hypercar.
- 22:48But yeah, I was a 759 horsepower V12 thingamajig and on the
- 22:54straight I hit 177 mph in the SVJ, and in the Temeraire I hit
- 23:02189. Same track.
- 23:04Yeah. And again, this is the base car
- 23:07and the SVJ was the umpteenth iteration of a platform with AV
- 23:1212, and this is AV 8. So is it better?
- 23:19Right, defined better? Yeah.
- 23:21I think it drove worse, yeah, and was definitely slower.
- 23:25Yeah. Yeah.
- 23:26So, yeah. So I don't know.
- 23:30So yeah, the internet's a big problem.
- 23:34Hey, Supercars. Yeah.
- 23:37Where's this Porsche supercar that we've been hearing about?
- 23:39It's supposed to be every 15 years.
- 23:42It was supposed to be 10 years I.
- 23:43Mean I don't know what. It is, it's like they, you know,
- 23:46the, the, the, the 959 happened and then nothing.
- 23:49And then, you know, it just so happened that like 19 years
- 23:56later, it wasn't even like a round Number, which is weird for
- 23:58Germans. But 19 years later the career GT
- 24:01happened and then nine years after that the the 918 spider
- 24:05happened. I don't know what's supposed to
- 24:08now, but McLaren has released or shown at least a successor to
- 24:13the P1. The W 1 Ferrari is there on
- 24:18about almost every 10 year cycle.
- 24:20So you know, 288 GTO was 86 let's say, and then three years
- 24:26later F40, and then like 8 years later F50, and then ten years
- 24:32later Enzo. And then La Ferrari was probably
- 24:3610 years after the Enzo thereabouts, and then ten years
- 24:39later was the F80. So they're kind of they've
- 24:41they've got it, you know. Yeah.
- 24:43So Porsche was supposed to do 1. I don't, I think what happened
- 24:48was the Mission X was that they showed at Rensport was Red Sport
- 24:52Reunion was supposed to be it. And you know, the people with
- 24:55the big checkbook said I don't want $1,000,000 EV or whatever.
- 24:59And so they went back to the drawing board.
- 25:01That'd be my best guess. So, and they might have known
- 25:07that going in, so they hedged their bed a little bit by
- 25:09calling it the Mission X or whatever they call it was a
- 25:11Mission X mission. X.
- 25:13Sounds. Right.
- 25:13Yeah. Yeah.
- 25:15So I don't know. I know that something's
- 25:16happening at the quail. Yeah, yeah.
- 25:19So if I was going to introduce AI, don't know, $4 million hyper
- 25:24car to the world, I would sure do it at the quail.
- 25:26So they're doing something, Lambo's showing something.
- 25:29Yeah, the Lambo's like it's probably going to be like some
- 25:32kind of Revuelto low production model, a couple $1,000,000, like
- 25:36like the Chantonario, like the CN, that type of thing.
- 25:40Like, you know, 100 units. I think they're calling it sort
- 25:44of a one off. It's a few off or something,
- 25:46which doesn't translate so well, but yeah, yeah, it's better in
- 25:50Italian. Yeah, everything's better in
- 25:52Italian. Yeah, obviously.
- 25:54Yeah, I know. Well, so one of the things that
- 25:56has been fascinating for me is hearing, you know, because
- 26:00people talk about like the supercars or the hypercars that
- 26:02are revealed at Quail and the fact that they're all sold by
- 26:06the time the day is over. Like usually.
- 26:08Yeah. I mean, it depends on the run
- 26:10and it depends on the manufacturer.
- 26:11Like for instance, I don't think Zenvo sold all their cars when
- 26:15they showed the Aurora was it last year.
- 26:18And I think like, you know, remember with the Porsche, the
- 26:21the 918, which I don't got nothing to do with the Quail,
- 26:24but they made like 918 of them are German.
- 26:30Like, you know, one of those like numerology things where
- 26:35they picked a number and then set a price.
- 26:37But Ferrari just says like, how many of these do you think we
- 26:40could sell 800? OK, make 799.
- 26:43You know, that's how Ferrari does it.
- 26:45So yeah, a lot of them are sold. A lot of them are sold.
- 26:52But also remember, like you know, they'll show a car like
- 26:56they showed the Temerario last quail and I just drove it two
- 27:00weeks ago and it goes on sale in in Q1 of 26.
- 27:03So it's an 18 month lead time. So even if you sell everyone,
- 27:07what are you really doing? You're taking deposits or
- 27:10commitments or something and then bankruptcy happens.
- 27:13The world's insane right now. Divorce happens.
- 27:16You change your mind, falls out of fashion, whatever you die.
- 27:20So they're not all sold sold. But you know, probably it's like
- 27:24it's like houses, like how many houses fall out of it?
- 27:27That's a bad example. I think like 40% of houses fall
- 27:29out of escrow, but the supercars is probably like 80% stay in
- 27:32escrow. Yeah, a few, yeah.
- 27:35And stuffle around, but yeah, I mean, that's that's been a big
- 27:38change. But that's why they're all doing
- 27:40it, though, is because the quail is where you sell them.
- 27:42You know, you started selling the Geneva Geneva's gone.
- 27:45Yeah. So this this is where you have
- 27:47all your customers. And then it's also, you know,
- 27:50it's like an auction in a way, because if you have a limited
- 27:52number, well, you know, better buy it now because it might be
- 27:55gone. So there's pressure, you know,
- 27:58and then, you know, you're walking around with like your,
- 28:00you know, new mistress and like, you got to impress her.
- 28:02Like I'm buying that. How much 5 million, you know,
- 28:06put it on the black card, right? You know, so that's how it's
- 28:12done. So that's that's what the quail
- 28:13really has become for for premium brands like the the
- 28:17hottest car show there is. But I mean, it's not saying much
- 28:22because every car show died, you know, except for like, yeah,
- 28:26they all died, I guess Goodwood, but that's kind of like the
- 28:28quail. And even that's just not even
- 28:30the same because it's just it's, it's it's not as international
- 28:34as Pebble is. Goodwood's still mostly AUK
- 28:37thing. I mean, a lot of people come in,
- 28:38but it's still mostly UK. But yeah, I mean, this is, I
- 28:43mean, I know Chevy showing up at the quail.
- 28:45They're going to show the their their new fax machine car, the
- 28:48ZRX one or whatever that was called.
- 28:51And I, I stole that line. It's the best line of all time.
- 28:54But like, what a horrible name. ZR It truly is it truly.
- 28:57Is ZR1X or something ZR1X? Of all the things it could have
- 29:01been, right? Right.
- 29:03I mean ZR2, ZR, I don't know ZR anything the you know, Zora,
- 29:09they trademarked Zora in the Chevy Zora Corvette Zora.
- 29:14Anyhow, they're, they're, they're gonna show that.
- 29:18So it's just become really big And like, it's, I mean, I
- 29:20remember, you know, a couple years ago, like Kia was there.
- 29:22Why was Kia there? Why not?
- 29:23It's a car show where people are buying shit.
- 29:26You're selling cars, you know, go for it.
- 29:28Right. Yeah.
- 29:29And people are in the mindset. I think it was last year Matt
- 29:31said he was at either Maserati or Lambeau and happened to be
- 29:35standing next to a couple who were in a serious conversation.
- 29:39OK, well, which car, which color are we getting on this one and
- 29:41which color are we getting? And he's like, you know, it's
- 29:44just, those are just the normal conversations that you hear
- 29:46people are, I remember was getting on 10 years ago
- 29:50probably, but I was at some some house Aston Martin had rented.
- 29:53And I was talking to my friend Matt.
- 29:54He used to work there. And they were, they were letting
- 29:57cars out for a test drive. And a guy comes back, he goes,
- 30:01I'll take it. And he goes, oh, great.
- 30:03I'm going to get you in touch with, we have a dealer Rep over
- 30:05there. They'll point you to the right
- 30:07dealer. He's like, no, no, no.
- 30:07I want the car I just drove. Plus I want another one, a
- 30:11different color for my wife and I want to repeat and I'll write
- 30:16you a check. How much?
- 30:18And $1,000,000 check or something.
- 30:21But you just wanted it then and there cuz why not?
- 30:24I write him a check. Relatable, as we say.
- 30:31Is surreal, you know, and I think it's also magical, right?
- 30:34I mean, I feel like every time you go you come away and
- 30:37something magic has happened Last year I bumped into our
- 30:39friend Bruce Meyer and the next thing I knew we were at Chip
- 30:41Connor's place checking out his collection.
- 30:43I mean, it's just it's like, where else does that happen,
- 30:46right? It's it's it's I think it's
- 30:49still worth going I think a lot of people have written it off
- 30:52because, oh, it's just too much of A shit show.
- 30:53It's gotten too expensive, but I mean, it's, it's amazing.
- 30:57Amazing. I go regardless, so.
- 30:58If you don't want to. Go great.
- 31:00Yeah, don't don't go. Well, what's the me to get stuck
- 31:03behind? What's the most amazing thing
- 31:04that's happened to you at Car Week?
- 31:06Like what? There's always something
- 31:07special. I think every year that happens
- 31:09while you're. There.
- 31:10I mean, the first time it was like blah, blah blah with blah
- 31:13blah and Johnny Lieberman and Jerry Seinfeld.
- 31:15That was pretty. Neat.
- 31:16Yeah, Yeah. Build like our names next to
- 31:18each other. That's awesome.
- 31:20That's most magical. Gosh, I don't that's a really,
- 31:29it's a really hard one to say. I mean, funny is I, I maybe
- 31:32think in terms of humor more. But one time Motor Trend, we
- 31:35used to do the live broadcast and I was interviewing Leno and
- 31:40or Pebble. Pebble.
- 31:42Yeah, and I was interviewed. We had Leno up there and
- 31:45something wasn't going right. We're having all kinds of like
- 31:48technical difficulties. And Jay was like, like asking,
- 31:51like what's happening? And I'm like, JJ, it's TV like,
- 31:54like, like, I know you don't know anything about it, but it's
- 31:57me. You're in good hands.
- 31:58And that was pretty good. Yeah.
- 32:01I don't know. I mean, just just just, I mean
- 32:03honestly, like the the cars, I mean, you know, as as silly as
- 32:07it sounds, but like, you know, seeing all the not all but you
- 32:15know, 20 some odd of the 250 GT OS that exist.
- 32:18That was like a once in a lifetime moment.
- 32:21Yeah. You know, there was there was
- 32:23some kind of crazy couple years ago, there was a like a Bentley
- 32:258 liter race car, which I've never even heard of, but been
- 32:28built. It was insane.
- 32:30And that was there and just yeah, just just just the cars.
- 32:35Well, what about I know I've heard you talk about the moment.
- 32:38I don't know if it was the first time you met Jerry in person,
- 32:41but I think it was at the fire pits.
- 32:42Oh, it was great, he said. He said, I'll never forget what
- 32:45he said to me. He said, hey, can I borrow your
- 32:46lighter? And that was it.
- 32:47That's all he said to me all night.
- 32:48It was really a wonderful moment.
- 32:51It was great. Now I was talking.
- 32:53I was sitting next to James Marsden.
- 32:55I was having a great conversation with him.
- 32:56But yes, the first night I met Seinfeld.
- 32:58That's what he said to me. He's done a couple of films,
- 33:01right. I think I know the name.
- 33:02Marston. Yeah.
- 33:03One or two. One or two.
- 33:04Yeah. He's a Sonic the Hedgehog.
- 33:05He's he's a big, he's a big Sonic.
- 33:06That's where I know I'm from. That's what it is.
- 33:09Well, but where was it when Jerry turned to you?
- 33:12And he goes, oh, you're Lieberman.
- 33:13Was it that same night? Oh, no, no, no.
- 33:16OK, that that's a funny story. No, that's the one I'm thinking
- 33:20of. It wasn't night, It was day.
- 33:21No. So, so, yeah, I might have been
- 33:23earlier that day or maybe it's the next day.
- 33:25But there's this car. It's it's, it's at the Mercedes
- 33:29classic Center and it's, it doesn't really have a name, but
- 33:32it's like a it's like an E60 AMG Ren sport thing mashup that was
- 33:38made for Seinfeld, like he did like a Mercedes commercial.
- 33:41And rather than pay them, pay him money, they built a car for
- 33:45him. And this car has been on talked
- 33:47about on spikes podcast like ad nauseam.
- 33:49But and so it was it was just hopped up sedan real fast and it
- 33:55had a really weird interior, which apparently Jerry was
- 33:58eating oatmeal and blueberries for breakfast.
- 34:02And they said sang feels what color do you want the interior?
- 34:05And he said like oatmeal and blueberries.
- 34:07So they it's got this weird like Bush grey with like it's the
- 34:13only Mercedes I believe in the world that has blueberry colored
- 34:16leather. It's actually blueberry and it's
- 34:19quite blueberry. Yeah, blueberry accents.
- 34:22And anyhow, Jerry had the car for a while and then he said he
- 34:28offered it to Spike, or Spike bought, I don't remember, as it
- 34:30came to California and Spike's people were prepping it and they
- 34:35were just cutting or using a razor blade and getting
- 34:37everything off the window. And there was apparently some
- 34:40sticker which made the car registerable, able to be
- 34:44registered in New York, and it was removed.
- 34:47And then Spike opened the door and he saw the sill plates at JS
- 34:50and he's like, yeah, I don't want this part.
- 34:52There's a Jerry money back. I don't want the car.
- 34:54So the car goes back to New York and Jerry Spike told me Jerry's
- 34:58been mad at him twice. And I can't tell you what the
- 35:00first one was, but the second one was because he took that
- 35:03sticker off and like Jerry now had a car he couldn't register.
- 35:08And I forget the whole story, but it wound up in in Mexico.
- 35:14And it wound up at like Mercedes of Mexico.
- 35:16But it wound up because, you know, it could be registered in
- 35:18Mexico, just not in the US because it was never
- 35:21federalized. But it had some, like,
- 35:23temporary, you know, make an exception sticker, which was
- 35:26removed. No way to get another one.
- 35:29Anyhow, the car made its way back from Mexico to San Diego, I
- 35:32think. And then the classic center out
- 35:34here in California got a hold of it.
- 35:36So now it lives there. They brought it to Pebble.
- 35:39And I knew of this car, and I think Mercedes said it was a
- 35:42Seinfeld car. So I told Spike.
- 35:43He's like, oh, my God, you have it.
- 35:44Like you have to show it to Jerry, you know, so, and I was
- 35:51like, great, I have it, I'll meet him.
- 35:52And we met at at Spanish Bay at like, you know, 10 AM or
- 35:55whatever it was. And like, you know, I, he was,
- 36:00he was actually standing there with Zuckerman.
- 36:01And I walked up and I was like, hey, you're Seinfeld, right?
- 36:05And joking. And he's like, yeah, you're
- 36:06Lieberman, right? Something I don't remember that
- 36:08joke, something like that. And then we went and talked to
- 36:11the car. But what I learned very quickly
- 36:13was that you don't want to actually ever be around Jerry in
- 36:16public because he's ultra famous.
- 36:19He's not a famous person. He's an ultra famous person that
- 36:22everybody had in their living room for a decade.
- 36:24So they, they, they feel very, very familiar.
- 36:27And so while you're mid conversation, everybody,
- 36:29especially rich guys, walk up and go, oh, hey, Jerry, remember
- 36:33it was it was 1998. You were staying in the corner
- 36:35of 1st St. and 2nd Ave. and I was eating a Raisin bagel and
- 36:38you said you like my shoe. And Jerry's like what?
- 36:41You know, So it wasn't a very good conversation.
- 36:45Yeah. Outside of school to hear him
- 36:47telling me about the car. So, yeah, well, we got to see
- 36:49that car. What ring, I think or no, in the
- 36:53fall at the Classic Center. Yeah.
- 36:55Me and you. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 36:56Yep. And it had, it had Jerry's old
- 36:58cell phone number in it. Yeah.
- 37:00And Larry Davids and everybody. 'S yeah, that's probably the
- 37:03same number still Larry Davids, right?
- 37:05It's. Not we actually had to quite
- 37:07double check everything. It's not, but it was all the
- 37:09original numbers and like the phone, like it turns on but it
- 37:14can't call out because it's like a 2G and just like 2 networks
- 37:18are gone or whatever. It's not supported.
- 37:20But for a moment powers up and yeah, if you can.
- 37:23Yeah, for a minute. We the because we were there
- 37:26with Mike Koons, who Ryan, you know, and Nate Lander, who is
- 37:30the magician shop extraordinaire restorer, and we all kind of
- 37:36went, wait a minute, we could call.
- 37:37Whoever's in the phone. Just what they want, yeah,
- 37:40right. You remember what a status
- 37:42symbol that was to have a phone in the car with a little like
- 37:45curly wire antenna. And I mean, it was just.
- 37:49I mean, I remember. Fake ones.
- 37:50I remember the brick phones. Yeah, I remember in the 70s, my
- 37:54neighbor Al, who was some kind of mafia dude, had a had a
- 37:58Cadillac that had it was, it was, it was like a coupe
- 38:01Deville, but he had one of those like limo boomerang antennas on
- 38:04the back. And he had like he just had a
- 38:06phone. It was just literally like a
- 38:08white old corded phone wired in the car.
- 38:11He would, he would drive to to Vegas constantly and he talked
- 38:16on the phone. And yeah, I was like 4 years
- 38:19old. But I remember being like very
- 38:21aware that, like, you know, Mike had this red Cadillac with red
- 38:25leather and it had a phone and it was really cool.
- 38:27Yeah, that would leave an impression.
- 38:29Yeah, I was very, I was very aware of cars at that point.
- 38:32But like, I'd never seen a phone in a car that was like.
- 38:35That is. Crazy.
- 38:36That's the next level of that. But was it I was thinking about,
- 38:40because I've been able to walk the lawn at Pebble with you a
- 38:43few times and I think last year, was it a Cadillac that was 24
- 38:48feet long? No, that was a couple years ago.
- 38:50It was a 27 footer that was AV16 coupe, unless you're thinking
- 38:56there was there was a there was like a crazy Mercedes that was
- 38:59like hell along the customer Mercedes.
- 39:02But yeah, it was a custom. It was a 2 door, 4 door because
- 39:06it was a 2 door Cadillac that I think it was 27 feet.
- 39:09It was a 31. I think it was a 4 door
- 39:13convertible and it had been custom.
- 39:15OK, That was not a Cadillac. That was some customer Mercedes.
- 39:18I think it was insane. Yeah.
- 39:19That was, Yeah, that was totally, totally bizarro.
- 39:22Yeah, yeah, Yeah. That was.
- 39:23And I think it was wider, too. Like, it was, I mean, it looked,
- 39:26it was humongous. It was.
- 39:27It was an oversized car, Yeah, but there was an even bigger
- 39:30Cadillac V16 coupe that in a perfect world would have won.
- 39:35It didn't win because like it wasn't a perfect restoration
- 39:37blah blah judge bullshit, but it was the IT was the most elegant
- 39:41car there by about 10 feet, so should have won.
- 39:45Yeah. So you do like old cars?
- 39:48Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 39:49So when are we going to get you on the Colorado grand?
- 39:51Speaking of Mike Coons, is this something you've ever wanted to
- 39:54do? Sure.
- 39:56Yeah, It's not a new guy. I mean, I, I would do it.
- 40:01I mean, you know, I would need someone to like, fly me out
- 40:04there, put me up, give me a car. But yeah, I'd do it.
- 40:06Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 40:08So am I staying a node for right people, my standard list of
- 40:11demands, Yeah. And I have to drive.
- 40:13I don't want to navigate. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 40:16But yeah, sure, yeah. OK, excellent.
- 40:18Yeah, I mean, I'm, I'm qualified.
- 40:20I I drove the Millie Mia or whatever.
- 40:22He did. Yeah.
- 40:24Well, then this is yeah. And that, I mean, that's
- 40:26hardcore. This is more of a gentleman's
- 40:28event. Yeah.
- 40:28So that's. I'm not a gentleman, but I'm
- 40:30pretty hardcore, so yeah. Tell us about that though.
- 40:34What's what's that like to drive?
- 40:36Oh, what's the greatest experience on planet Earth like?
- 40:38Well, it is. Let's see, you go to a company
- 40:43ruled by passion and their love of racing, and 2 million people
- 40:51stand on the street and cheer for four days as you break every
- 40:55single traffic law in the country.
- 40:58And only in Italy, right? Only in Italy, there's nowhere
- 41:01else this could happen. But like grandmothers, like I
- 41:05remember afterwards I was, you know, flying somewhere and we're
- 41:13on the, you know, it's we're flying out of like, you know,
- 41:17Bologna to Rome to fly home. So we're on a little plane.
- 41:22So, you know, you have to take a bus to the plane, right?
- 41:24So we're in the bus and we're crammed in.
- 41:25I have my backpack on and my bag is tagged with, you know,
- 41:28millimeter competitor. And this like, I remember this
- 41:31old like old, like couldn't stand up.
- 41:34Grandmother was like looking at my bag and, and looking and she
- 41:38grabs the label and she's looking at it.
- 41:40She goes competition. And I was like, yeah.
- 41:43And she's like, she like wants a selfie and she's freaking out.
- 41:47And yeah, it's, I don't know where to start, but yeah, like
- 41:55they got 25 of the most handsome Italian bike cops in, in the
- 41:59country that like fucking Peacock.
- 42:02And they're very aware of who they are.
- 42:05And they're your escort and they lead you out of town.
- 42:07And if traffic's slow, they they, they, they ride up between
- 42:11cars and smack the roof to like, get them to part the way and.
- 42:14Just. Drive as hard as you can and
- 42:17people are holding up signs and say don't lift.
- 42:19And the the goal when we were in had a passenger horn, which is
- 42:24I've now seen two. There's the, the, the 56 going
- 42:27when we were in. And for some reason, Subaru's
- 42:30current rally car has a, the strongest car has a passenger a
- 42:34foot activated one. The, the Mercedes 1's a push
- 42:37one. And yeah, just every traffic
- 42:39circle is just lined with people.
- 42:41And, you know, you try and take it as fast as you can and
- 42:43meanwhile your navigator's just like honking the horn, you know,
- 42:46and like, it's insane. And you know, it's, it's the
- 42:49greatest. And like, you know, we we pull
- 42:52into Rome at, I don't know, 10:30 Saturday night and they
- 42:56have a little stage set up. And so you queue up and you
- 42:59drive up on the stage and you learn how to say, like, I love
- 43:01Italy, I love Italians. You're the greatest whatever 2
- 43:05phrases of Italian. The crowd goes crazy.
- 43:08Then they line you up and and they give you a police LED
- 43:11midnight tour of Rome and you're going to go wing.
- 43:15So you pop the doors open so you have a better view and you're
- 43:18just driving next to the Coliseum.
- 43:19Yeah, it's it's undescribable. Yeah.
- 43:22Yeah. It's incredible.
- 43:24My favorite moment of that, we went to Monza.
- 43:28And so it's a rally, right? So it's not a race, it's a
- 43:32rally. So you have these stupid special
- 43:33sections, which I hate, but you know, it's like go 37 kilometers
- 43:37an hour for 32 seconds, then go 41 kilometers an hour for five
- 43:41seconds. All that bullshit.
- 43:43Which, by the way, if you don't have an Italian passport, you're
- 43:45not going to win anyways. So.
- 43:49Anyway, yeah, but Mercedes being Mercedes, they got to do it
- 43:52better than everybody. So instead of just giving you a
- 43:55clipboard like a normal company would do, they they built an app
- 43:58on an iPad. Remember when iPads were all the
- 44:00rage? And what it, what it did was it
- 44:03had the sections and so the navigator would hit start and it
- 44:05would like visually countdown a bar graph and then you know, it
- 44:09would know when to start the next one, right.
- 44:13Which is great when there's like 4 parts of the special section.
- 44:19Monza had 7, which meant when it loaded, the top 2 got scrolled
- 44:24up like they were out of sight. So when my navigator hit start,
- 44:28he started on #3 So anyways, we're on Monza.
- 44:31We're doing that. We're on the old track with the
- 44:32banking, you know? And after like two or three, he
- 44:36realizes his mistake because it's not adding up.
- 44:38I have no idea what navigators do, but it's not adding up.
- 44:40And he's like, oh, my God, man, I ruined it.
- 44:43I've ruined it for you. We're going, you know, like 50
- 44:46kilometers an hour on the like, under the banking.
- 44:49And I'm like, oh, OK. And I just like roll on the
- 44:52throttle, pop up completely sideways on the banking pass
- 44:56everybody at 110 miles an hour. Amazing.
- 44:58Best moment of my life. Amazing, amazing, amazing A.
- 45:02Billion dollars worth of cars, you know, amazing.
- 45:04And yeah, it was, that was the best.
- 45:06And he was apologizing. I'm like, I don't care.
- 45:09I don't care. It's.
- 45:10The experience we always talk about like what our 12 year old
- 45:13selfs. Be proud of the people we are.
- 45:14Johnny, I'm turning 50 this year.
- 45:16I know you just turned 50, your 12 year old self.
- 45:19You know, I think I would be pretty proud.
- 45:20Nah, he'd think I was a horrible seller, actually. 12 year old,
- 45:23Yeah, my 16 year old self would be very upset.
- 45:25Yeah, yeah, yeah. My 12 year old would be pretty
- 45:27impressed. Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 45:29Yeah, for sure. Well, so so 50.
- 45:30So I'm turning 50. You just turned 50.
- 45:32I know Lindsay's only halfway there.
- 45:34Don't do it. Don't do it.
- 45:37Big mistake. You're going to regret it.
- 45:39It's like you're blinking. Then you're 50.
- 45:41Like, I don't know where the time went.
- 45:43But yeah. What have, what have you
- 45:44learned? Like, what would you have done
- 45:46differently, if anything? Because it's, you know, you sort
- 45:48of seem to have it. Figured out I don't know Jesus,
- 45:51what would I have done different?
- 45:52I would have gone into like commercial real estate or.
- 45:55Finance. Something where I made a lot of
- 45:57money, just make a lot of money. I'm sick of, I'm sick of
- 46:00thinking about money. It's not that I'm like material.
- 46:02I just, I just don't want to think about it anymore.
- 46:04I don't want to. Like if I just want to sit on
- 46:07the couch for a week, fucking let me write it.
- 46:10Can't, can't do that. So yeah, I would make a lot more
- 46:14money, sadly, but or leave the country.
- 46:17Like move to Italy, man. Speaking of Italy.
- 46:20Becoming more and more. Eat lasagna.
- 46:23Yeah. I mean, the cars like.
- 46:25Yeah, yeah. What a life.
- 46:27Drive the Amelia. Amelia.
- 46:28Every year, all the time. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 46:32Like this one. Yeah.
- 46:32I've learned nothing. And this.
- 46:34And you just feel worse and you're uglier and grayer and
- 46:37fatter and slower and tumber and there's no positives about
- 46:40turning 50. Nothing.
- 46:41Nothing. Yeah, yeah, I can confirm all
- 46:43this to be true and. Yeah, just wait.
- 46:46It's worse. It's worse than they say.
- 46:52Yeah. And it's like a big number.
- 46:53It ain't like. It is, I know I'm struggling
- 46:56with it. It's like once it hits you're
- 46:57like fuck. Yeah.
- 46:59Do you do anything crazy to celebrate or take your mind off
- 47:03it or anything? No, when I went out to dinner
- 47:06with friend. Yeah, yeah.
- 47:08You're like, and here we are. Yeah, yeah.
- 47:11Like, I haven't cared about birthdays since I was 30.
- 47:16And I, I remember I for some reason, I was like, it was a big
- 47:18deal turning 30 and then I turned 30 and like, it's just
- 47:22whatever, you know? And, and I know, I know, stop
- 47:24thinking about birthdays. So I just, I, I, I'm just really
- 47:28bad with like anniversaries and stuff like that.
- 47:30I, I just don't care. So yeah.
- 47:32Can't do anything about it, you know.
- 47:34Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean it beats the alternative
- 47:37though. That's truly true, right?
- 47:40I mean, does it? I'm kind of, I'm getting tired.
- 47:44I remember a few years ago I had two grandparents say to me like,
- 47:49don't get old. It's not worth it.
- 47:50And I'm like, but a we don't have a choice.
- 47:55And if it's the alternative, at least, you know, I'll let you
- 47:57know if that perspective changes.
- 47:59But but, and this so, you know, this kind of ties in with as you
- 48:06get older, what you're learning and whatever with your career,
- 48:11there's so much travel involved and you have opportunities that
- 48:15keep you on the road a lot or keep things busy.
- 48:19Do you ever feel like you're getting burned out with doing
- 48:24all these things? Or is it no, no, no, no.
- 48:26I'm shaking my head no, Oh, no, no, no.
- 48:28The opposite. I wish I was doing more.
- 48:30I, I really, yeah, I, I love it. I like I said, I just, I just in
- 48:36the last month about I did the F80 in Italy and then I went to
- 48:42Utah and I drove a bunch of stuff including a 9/11 73911 Rs
- 48:49lightweight, which is. Oh, so good.
- 48:51Very good. Yeah, kind of one of the
- 48:53greatest things ever made. Yeah, I drove that.
- 48:56I drove a Aston Martin Valor, which is rad, like rad.
- 49:00Great car. I went to the Festival of Speed.
- 49:05Didn't get to drive anything, sadly, but that was fun.
- 49:07Went to it, went over there. Goodwood.
- 49:10Goodwood's always amazing. Yeah.
- 49:12And, and then I went and I drove the Temerario and I didn't even
- 49:15talked about it. But I also went to France right
- 49:17after Portugal and drove the Bugatti Mistral, which is the
- 49:22final boss of Hypercars. It is it.
- 49:25Is. The one it is now, was that the
- 49:27blue one that it was like a royal ish blue?
- 49:30Yeah, it was exposed blue carbon fiber, which photographed very
- 49:33well on my little iPhone with orange wheels and a perfect
- 49:37interior. And that is the car, that is the
- 49:41daddy that is. Like.
- 49:43Yeah, that's if I had a lot of money on buying that car.
- 49:47Had you gone into commercial real estate and found yourself?
- 49:51Absolutely, Absolutely I would have.
- 49:54You can't seriously picture yourself doing anything but what
- 49:56you're doing right? I could be rich and just have a
- 50:01bunch of cars and not have to do these.
- 50:03Things. But isn't this better?
- 50:04Isn't this life better? Nah, Nah, Nah.
- 50:08I would love, I would love to own that Mistral man.
- 50:11Yeah, That's that's that's a real car, as we say.
- 50:17Well, that's saying something because like you said, I was
- 50:20going to. Real money too.
- 50:23Yeah, it's like 5 and a half million before options.
- 50:25I'm sorry, Lindsay, what was that?
- 50:26No, even after doing this as long as you have, you said like
- 50:29the last month has been particularly epic and you've had
- 50:33some pretty epic experiences. So I don't know if it's
- 50:35particularly epic, kind of normal epic.
- 50:37And by the way, in between that, I forget the cars I was driving
- 50:40when I was here, but like, I know there was like a Sterato
- 50:43and I drove the M5 Touring and I, the bunch of balls were when
- 50:47I was back home, I was driving stuff.
- 50:49So no, no, no, I I I'm not burnt out at all.
- 50:53The opposite. I'm hungry for much more.
- 50:55Yeah. Yeah.
- 50:56Well, that's a good. I mean, that means you're
- 50:58enjoying the work. Oh, absolutely.
- 51:00Yeah. And the other thing too, is, you
- 51:02know, oh, my alarm's going off. Oh, yes, it's time.
- 51:08I bought, I bought, I bought a lot of tickets today.
- 51:09So that's wrongs right now. But there comes your Bugatti.
- 51:14It's going to happen, hey. I'm saying here, I'm buying a
- 51:19Mistral. It's Mistral time, guys.
- 51:22Mistral money. If I win 340 million, I'm going
- 51:24to take 5 1/2 of that and get me a Mistral.
- 51:27Yeah, for sure. Absolutely.
- 51:28I mean, at that point, maybe you get 2, Like, come on.
- 51:32Nah. Doesn't have a roof, you know,
- 51:34so. Right.
- 51:35Yeah, but that's OK. Doesn't rain a lot here.
- 51:39But I'm sorry, what was the question?
- 51:40I got the alarm, set me off. We got distracted.
- 51:43We got distracted. Planning your future Mistral
- 51:45ownership. Hey, I figure I know that Edwin
- 51:48Castro guy pretty good. He he's the only one.
- 51:50Like. 1.8 billion and he just bought cars and houses.
- 51:54I would pretty much do the same thing.
- 51:56I I can't imagine much, you know, maybe a couple of watches
- 51:59or something stupid, but yeah, I know we'll see.
- 52:02There's a question there. I totally my alarm ruined it.
- 52:05It's all good. Speaking of Speaking of watches,
- 52:08what are you wearing tonight? Yeah, yeah, I've got.
- 52:11Yeah. Hey.
- 52:13Jiffy party. Very nice.
- 52:15I like that watching very much. Yes, yes.
- 52:18I love that one. This is the Leno thing, Jay.
- 52:22Leno Driving Wash is kind of a fun camo horse.
- 52:26Strap on it. Yeah, this is.
- 52:29I'm kind of into it now. I gotta send this one back to
- 52:32Jay because it can't keep time for shit, but I really like how
- 52:35it looks. It just runs fast.
- 52:37I've never had a watch like you wind it up after an hour.
- 52:40It's 5 minutes fast. It's.
- 52:41Weird. Yeah.
- 52:42It heard that you don't like getting old and you're kind of
- 52:44over it, so it's like work to speed things up.
- 52:47Yeah, probably. Something would anybody one that
- 52:49goes the other has the other problem please?
- 52:51Just work bad, yeah. Great watch.
- 52:53Great watch. Great watch.
- 52:55Jay is the best. He is such a cool guy, true
- 52:58enthusiast, great guy. We just found out today that
- 53:00we'll be working with him again, so we're very excited about
- 53:03that. So thank you, Jay, you know, a
- 53:06big fan of the watches and he's he's a great guest too.
- 53:08He was great on spikes. He's just, he's a neat guy, so.
- 53:12Yeah. I think we've all been lucky
- 53:14enough to spend some time with him and he's just cool and he's
- 53:17so generous. I mean I.
- 53:18Just really is he's. Got to stop.
- 53:20I've got black divers, yeah. It's, oh I know, out of control.
- 53:24Out of control. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 53:27Do you have time to take some listener questions?
- 53:29I got all the time you. Want to do that, Lindsay?
- 53:31Should we go to the listeners? We can do that and we pull those
- 53:34up. Do you do you know Dan Mcinnis?
- 53:37Is that name familiar to you? OK, He they mentioned him from.
- 53:41Good vibes. He's the one that won the blue
- 53:43GT4 the night. Oh, Dan.
- 53:45Yeah, yeah, yeah, quite. A lot of that, yeah, Dan, Yeah,
- 53:49yeah. Just hit 100,000 miles on his
- 53:51green spider this week. So good for you.
- 53:54Yeah. Well, he drives to LA every day.
- 53:57So right. I know why.
- 54:00Doesn't he just? Move.
- 54:01I don't get the people. Like that or well, you know,
- 54:03'cause. That's.
- 54:04Pretty well what he drives to. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 54:07yeah. He's gonna be on the grand this
- 54:10year. He's got this amazing alpha,
- 54:11this Julia Sprint Speciale, which will be great.
- 54:14He's gonna drive with his dad, so but he wants to know how you
- 54:18manage saying yes to doing things and not getting burned
- 54:20out or is the work reward enough?
- 54:22And I think you kind of answered this before.
- 54:25They still enjoy it, right? It's.
- 54:27Yeah, I don't understand this burnout thing.
- 54:30Like who's burning out? Like people like, you know, if
- 54:32you're like working out in the sun, like, you know, without a
- 54:35hat or something, maybe you burn out or, I don't know,
- 54:38spreadsheets or something. That sucks, but like like Gee, I
- 54:42had to fly to Portugal business class, stay in a hotel, drive a
- 54:47907 horsepower car on an old F1 track.
- 54:52Ah, darn it out. I mean like.
- 54:54That is the dream, yeah. It's.
- 54:56Yeah, now look, did I have a fucking travel day coming?
- 55:02So let's say I woke up in France, in Strasbourg, and then
- 55:07we drove to Switzerland and we flew to Lisbon where we had a
- 55:10four hour layover and then flew to DC because Lamborghini
- 55:14friggin cheaped out and bought us the cheapest plane tickets
- 55:17possible. And we got to DC and had a 5
- 55:20hour layover with no lounge, which turned into a six hour
- 55:23layover. And man, that sucked.
- 55:27That was a 27 hour travel day. I slept most of the way.
- 55:31And it was. Yeah.
- 55:32Yeah. Well, so tell me about the pink
- 55:35Audi that you saw in Strasbourg, because that was apparently it
- 55:38was like Jacques Villeneuve's. That was, it was Jacques
- 55:42Villeneuve really in the car? Yeah.
- 55:45But everybody tagged him. Apparently that was there.
- 55:47I I didn't look, I I looked at the photo.
- 55:49Obviously I wasn't looking at the driver, but I looked at that
- 55:51photo and I took and he looked and it's at the back of his head
- 55:54is like, man, you know, white guy with Gray hair and
- 55:59apparently. Yeah, in a pink, in a Barbie
- 56:03pink Audi. Yeah.
- 56:05It was like totally insane. It was in front of a church,
- 56:08like Caddy corner from our hotel.
- 56:10We were, we literally were pulling the bags out of the car
- 56:14and I was like, oh, I'm just gonna get a picture real fast.
- 56:16You're like, look at that. Yeah.
- 56:18It was just a cool shot. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 56:21Like and especially the contrast of the pink against like the
- 56:25historic building, you know, it was just the picture was really
- 56:28cool. I should have got a better
- 56:29picture of the church. It was a particularly nice
- 56:31church. It was like super, I don't know
- 56:34what you call it, not not Gothic, but Middle Ages.
- 56:37It was, you know, just that that architecture style, like the
- 56:4114-15 hundred style church still there, you know, so like the
- 56:45Germany kind of Middle Ages thing, even though Strasbourg's
- 56:49technically in France wasn't always in France, right.
- 56:53They like to mix it up. Yeah, yeah.
- 56:55Every couple 100 years, right. They're like, we're gonna just
- 56:58yeah. So our friend John Dicey said
- 57:00when are you coming back to Pikes?
- 57:03Yeah, Look, how much time do you have?
- 57:07It's not time. That's a money thing.
- 57:09I can make the time. That's a that's just a cash
- 57:12thing. And it's just like, you know,
- 57:16like if I could get a ride with like Hyundai, I should actually
- 57:20just call Hyundai and pitch this.
- 57:21But like Hyundai, if Hyundai is here first, gives me, yeah,
- 57:25actually, I think I've said it somewhere else before.
- 57:26But anyways, it's a it's a, it's a, you know, it's a putting it
- 57:30out there type of plan, right? Yeah.
- 57:33Hyundai said, hey, you could drive an ionic like up the hill,
- 57:37you know, that would, that would be cool.
- 57:39And then they could just pay for everything.
- 57:40But you know, when I did it, I think I raised $58,000 in
- 57:45sponsorship money and I my total I spent was 75,000.
- 57:50So now part of that was because the motherfuckers that visit
- 57:56Cayman Island yanked their sponsorship.
- 57:58Nasty race. Yeah.
- 58:00They were like, Oh well, oh, so checks in the mail and then race
- 58:02is over and I'm like, hey, I need the money.
- 58:04And they're like, yeah. And fuck that.
- 58:07That's. Yeah.
- 58:08So, you know, you know, that's that was, I'm still upset about
- 58:12that. But yeah, so I went out of
- 58:13pocket. I'm sorry, Cayman Islands, the
- 58:15home of shell companies and. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 58:21Those ethical morally. But the lesson here is don't
- 58:25visit Cayman Islands. And then we worked out, yeah,
- 58:28well, it was just one of these weird things where Porsche had
- 58:30given me the car, but they're like, we sort of had this deal
- 58:33going with visit Cayman Islands this year.
- 58:35Could you leave half delivery on the car, visit Cayman Islands
- 58:39and they'll they'll pay for XY and Z.
- 58:41And I was like, yeah, that's great.
- 58:44And then they didn't. So it really owes me and yeah,
- 58:48so 17,000 out of pocket, which it sucked.
- 58:53So yeah, it's not a great money drive for me.
- 58:56I'm not, I'm just, I'm just not that wealthy.
- 58:58I. Wish I was just, you know.
- 59:00So, yeah, so. Hey, Hyundai is listening and
- 59:02that was actually the next question.
- 59:04Curtains on Instagram. Yeah.
- 59:06When do we see an EV run? So I guess.
- 59:08That would I would love to do an EV.
- 59:09I would do anything other than what I what I drove.
- 59:13Yeah, I wanna, I wanna front drive turbo or an EV.
- 59:15Yeah, that would that would be. Well, that's.
- 59:17Let's talk about what you drove because I am a huge fan of the
- 59:20GT4. I know that you were less than
- 59:22impressed at altitude. It's.
- 59:23A great car everywhere, but Pikes Peak, Yeah.
- 59:25Yeah, that's it. Yeah.
- 59:26No, it's just, I look, it's a naturally aspirated, you know, 6
- 59:31cylinder that, you know, 415 horsepower stock, which isn't a
- 59:35lot for Pikes Peak, Yeah, but at the top of the mountain, it's
- 59:38making 252 horsepower. So it's it's pretty gutless, you
- 59:44know, could I have handled a faster car?
- 59:45Yeah, I think I could have, but that wasn't so much the problem
- 59:49though. It was just that it's, you know,
- 59:50there's 23 hairpins and so there's 23, you know, first gear
- 59:57hairpins in a rear drive car. And like you just, you want
- 1:00:00something yanking you out of the corners.
- 1:00:01This is why, This is why with the exception of like the, the,
- 1:00:05the real purpose built, like, you know, in the F1 looking
- 1:00:09things, everything's all-wheel drive because it helps, it
- 1:00:12really does help pull me off those slow corners.
- 1:00:16So yeah, look, and the car was absolutely awesome.
- 1:00:20And, you know, it was, you know, I but really I'm, I'm just sort
- 1:00:24of bitter because my run was totally fogged in.
- 1:00:27Oh, that's right. Yeah, shortchanged.
- 1:00:29Bizarre weather. Yeah.
- 1:00:30Yeah, it's cuz like, it just, you know, not that I was gonna
- 1:00:33win my class cuz, you know, Lonnie Unser was ahead of me,
- 1:00:36but also freaking. What's his face?
- 1:00:40Oh, God, I can see his face. OK.
- 1:00:41Cam. Cam Ingram.
- 1:00:42Oh, yeah. Who was like a man possessed
- 1:00:45that year. This is the most incredible,
- 1:00:47really the most incredible run of the year.
- 1:00:49I don't know what got into him. Yeah, but.
- 1:00:53But, but in practice, I was like a solid, you know, 3rd.
- 1:00:56And I came in fourth. And it was just, in my mind, it
- 1:00:59was the fog. I I just.
- 1:01:01Slowed down, No, I that's a yeah.
- 1:01:03You had a great run though, SO. I mean, I had AI had a if you
- 1:01:07look at, if you look at making excuses, if you look at the
- 1:01:10bottom sector times where it wasn't foggy, I was doing
- 1:01:12really, really well. I wasn't, you know, here's the
- 1:01:15crazy thing. If you look and I don't remember
- 1:01:16the numbers, but like Randy Pope's was in the Tesla Model S
- 1:01:20and I wasn't that far off his time on the bottom section.
- 1:01:23But then once the fog hit, I was very slow, you know, 4th place
- 1:01:28out of six, you know, in my class it was OK.
- 1:01:32But but it was it was, it was, it was two things.
- 1:01:34It was like a bad run or just, you know, and I'm sitting at the
- 1:01:37top and I'm sitting next to like Zwart Randy Post, Reece Mill and
- 1:01:41Rod Mill and David Donahue. David, David, you know, king of
- 1:01:44the mountain guy. Donna, thank you.
- 1:01:47And and like 2 centuries collectively have experienced a
- 1:01:51big peak. And they're like, oh, yeah,
- 1:01:53that's the worst we've ever seen it.
- 1:01:55I'm like, great. Just so the rookie wants to hear
- 1:01:57right. Yeah.
- 1:01:59Well then this year I think they only did the very bottom
- 1:02:02section. That sucks that really they said
- 1:02:05it was wind. Yeah, which is crazy.
- 1:02:08Well, they were saying the aero cars would.
- 1:02:10Get blown off well. That's it.
- 1:02:12OK. You don't want that.
- 1:02:13You want to avoid that. Yeah.
- 1:02:15Yeah. But it's just it's extreme
- 1:02:18weather. I mean, we had, you know, I had
- 1:02:20two weeks of practice there and beautiful everyday sun, perfect
- 1:02:25weather. And then, yeah, you know, you're
- 1:02:27done. Friday, Saturday night, 10
- 1:02:28inches of snow. And then wake up on Sunday
- 1:02:30morning, it's raining and foggy and you're driving through snow.
- 1:02:35Yeah, the rain is melting, but still driving through snow.
- 1:02:37So it was just, it was just the mountain has a different agenda
- 1:02:41than the race. Well, shout out to Fred Veach
- 1:02:43and that crew and our friends at Porsche of Colorado.
- 1:02:46I'll tell you a funny Fred story.
- 1:02:48Yeah, so. He's he's quite a guy, he's
- 1:02:51quite a character, so. Quite a character is an
- 1:02:53understatement. So Fred, if you can picture like
- 1:02:56a a larger, heavier Jeremy Clarkson, who's that's Fred.
- 1:03:00Well, this very large man who's introduced to me is like, oh,
- 1:03:04this is the guy who runs everything and he goes,
- 1:03:07Lieberman, you motherfucker. Excuse me.
- 1:03:11He's like, I've been #73 since 1973.
- 1:03:15And you, they gave me my number, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:03:18And I was like, oh gosh, I had no idea.
- 1:03:20And also, you know, like my mom just died.
- 1:03:23And when I played football my freshman year, I was 73.
- 1:03:26And I always hated it. And I changed it to 77.
- 1:03:29And for years my mom was always like, I like 73.
- 1:03:32So when I was thinking of a number, I said, oh, my mom just
- 1:03:35died. I'll go with that.
- 1:03:37And he's like, that's my fucking number.
- 1:03:41You think he'd be in a position to do something about it, but
- 1:03:43that's what. I told him, but yeah, he was
- 1:03:46furious. But that's amazing.
- 1:03:48That's. Yeah, that's amazing.
- 1:03:50It's very nice to me. And the larger context is that,
- 1:03:54yes, it's full of provincial weirdos out there.
- 1:03:59Well, that's the whole thing. We're not.
- 1:04:00Normal. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:04:03yeah. Those people have been doing it
- 1:04:04for generations and it's a it's a very unique event for better.
- 1:04:09Course. So it's yeah.
- 1:04:11Yeah, Yeah. Well.
- 1:04:12That's what I think a lot of people don't realize is the way
- 1:04:14that you get to practice is you only get a section.
- 1:04:17You never get to do the entire course right until the race.
- 1:04:21Yeah, Yeah. That's that's the weirdest
- 1:04:23thing. Well, I mean, look, first of
- 1:04:24all, if you haven't, I'm sure you've you've had if you had
- 1:04:26other people talking about Pikes on the show, No.
- 1:04:29No, we. Haven't actually here's your
- 1:04:31practice days of Pikes alarm goes off at 2:20 AM you're down
- 1:04:36at the shop where the car is at 3:00 AM you're loaded on the
- 1:04:39trailer to 330 start making way up the mountain.
- 1:04:41They open the gate at I want to say like 4:15 AM.
- 1:04:46You trudge up to the, the, the, whatever the parking lot where
- 1:04:50you start and that's like 9300 feet and drivers meeting is like
- 1:04:554:55 AM and green flag at 5:00 AM and you run your third.
- 1:05:01You're only running a third. So one day you run like the
- 1:05:05bottom. One day you run the middle, one
- 1:05:06day you're on the top and vice versa.
- 1:05:08And because they don't want us idiots crashing into each other,
- 1:05:11they put like a quarter mile buffer between the the sections.
- 1:05:15So there's like a good half mile of the course that you never run
- 1:05:18in practice ever, ever, ever. You never, ever drive it in
- 1:05:21practice. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:23Well, that's like a fun surprise.
- 1:05:26Yeah, yeah. And then and then red, red flag
- 1:05:28at 8:30, meaning you're done, you know, you're off.
- 1:05:31And then you have to be out of the parking lot where you're
- 1:05:34parked by 9:00 AM because then it's a public road and you do
- 1:05:38that every day for a couple days in a row.
- 1:05:40So it's a real like like training yourself to go to bed
- 1:05:42by 7:00 PM. What I what I did was like as
- 1:05:46soon as we were done racing, I would just start consuming like
- 1:05:50600 milligrams of caffeine and I would just be wired all day to
- 1:05:55make sure I didn't fall asleep. And then I would eat like 3 or
- 1:05:584000 calorie dinner and put on a Roger Moore James Bond film
- 1:06:01which would knock me unconscious in 5 minutes because they're.
- 1:06:04So bad. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:06That was my protocol. Totally worth.
- 1:06:08That's great. That's excellent.
- 1:06:09That's excellent. Was it terrifying?
- 1:06:12I mean, because there are, you know, it was manageable.
- 1:06:16No, like I could see how it could be terrifying, Sure, but
- 1:06:24yeah, you're just driving. You know, I think like the three
- 1:06:32to me don't have 4, but there's three tricky things about Pikes
- 1:06:37Peak and it's it's it's the same thing three times.
- 1:06:39There are corners that look just like other corners.
- 1:06:42So famously there's engineers corner.
- 1:06:44Less famously, there's rookie corner, because rookie corner
- 1:06:47looks just like engineer, but it's much slower and so rookies
- 1:06:50tend to crash in rookie corner. There's a Pope's pond where
- 1:06:57Randy Pope's famously flew 300 feet over a pond.
- 1:07:00He missed the pond. And then that faster pastor guy
- 1:07:03crashed into the pond, post pond, pastor's pond or whatever.
- 1:07:08But that corner, that Randy flow, I almost did it too.
- 1:07:11I just wasn't going as fast as he was.
- 1:07:13But like in practice, it looks just like another, literally
- 1:07:16just like another corner. And then there's the Evo corner,
- 1:07:20which there's there's up in the middle section where it's the
- 1:07:23real precipitous drops where that Evo went off in 2012.
- 1:07:30There's three corners that look exactly the same, but the third
- 1:07:33one is much, much tighter. It visually looks identical.
- 1:07:37You just have to know where you are and just like, get off of
- 1:07:40the right, get over to the left because it's, it's just, you
- 1:07:42can't do it. And which I drove in complete
- 1:07:46fog, but luckily I had the course memorized.
- 1:07:48And then the other one, I think it's kind of hard is and but you
- 1:07:50learn it up up near the top. It's like the third corner from
- 1:07:53the top or 4th corner. It's called cog cut corner.
- 1:07:56So there's that cog train. Yes, it goes up and it's like
- 1:07:59when you're on the road, it's the last place you can see the
- 1:08:02cog track before you get to the top.
- 1:08:04And just because it's so you know, just the terrain up there,
- 1:08:08it's so bumpy and frozen and those those water trucks have to
- 1:08:11bring all the water up and the buses are just ruining the road.
- 1:08:14It's really, really bumpy in that section and the mountains
- 1:08:17shifting under it all the time. So it's a big, big straight with
- 1:08:21a bumpy braking zone. So your your front end tends to
- 1:08:24get airborne. So you're on the brakes, but the
- 1:08:26wheels aren't in contact with the pavement and a lot of people
- 1:08:29crash there and hit the hit the train track and that that's
- 1:08:34tricky. I almost went off, but you know,
- 1:08:36then you're like, oh, I should take a different line because
- 1:08:40it's just a longer braking zone than it.
- 1:08:41Looks like it would be right, right, Right.
- 1:08:44Yeah. I just think it's the coolest
- 1:08:45thing that you did it. I mean, it's, it's just that's,
- 1:08:48you know. Yeah, I mean, my, my, my
- 1:08:50favorite story, and I should tell this more often, but like,
- 1:08:52it was like the day before I was leaving to get on the plane.
- 1:08:55You guys know who Eddie Alterman is?
- 1:08:57Sure. I know the name.
- 1:08:59Yeah. Eddie.
- 1:08:59Eddie used to be the editor in chief of Car and Driver.
- 1:09:03And I was like the head of car content at Hearst or something.
- 1:09:06But he sends me a fucking text and he goes like, hey, man, like
- 1:09:09enjoy Pikes. Like, you know, don't, don't
- 1:09:11pull a bedard. And.
- 1:09:14Oh, that's a callback, Yeah. Yeah, so Patrick Pat Bedard
- 1:09:18raced Indy and crashed at over 200 miles an hour and Pat was a
- 1:09:23car journalist. Yeah.
- 1:09:24And I'm like, what the fuck, Eddie?
- 1:09:27Like, why would you, why would you do that after the race?
- 1:09:30You know, like it was a really it was passive aggressive, you
- 1:09:33know, cuz. I.
- 1:09:34Was like. At the time, first in the Motor
- 1:09:37Trend, it was really kind of a yeah, so.
- 1:09:41Only. One of you, I have the race.
- 1:09:45I didn't crash, I made it the. Time.
- 1:09:46No, no, no, no. Which?
- 1:09:48In that way. He wasn't racing Pikes Peaks so.
- 1:09:51Look, I'm sure Indy's I was going to say harder, but Pikes
- 1:09:56is really difficult. It's.
- 1:09:57Really, it's a. Tricky thing.
- 1:09:59It's just a lot of memorization like yeah, in these four
- 1:10:01corners, you know, how hard could it be?
- 1:10:05Pikes is, you know, 150 something.
- 1:10:07So, but, but Indy, you're going very fast.
- 1:10:09So it's 100. It's more than 150 corners at
- 1:10:12Pikes I it's, it's weirdly identical to the Nurburgring in
- 1:10:16terms of like distance and corners.
- 1:10:17Like it's like, it's like they're both 12 miles or
- 1:10:21thereabouts and they're both 150.
- 1:10:23I think 1's 153 and one's 156 or vice versa.
- 1:10:27But yeah, it's the same, it's the same length and and you got
- 1:10:31to memorize the same amount of stuff and so well, and I feel
- 1:10:35like you can drive the entire Nurburgring.
- 1:10:37I think that would have been the hardest part for me is
- 1:10:39memorizing it. Right.
- 1:10:41Especially when they're sections you don't get to drive in real
- 1:10:43life because I know you did a lot of SIM training for that,
- 1:10:45right? Yeah, I did a lot of SIM.
- 1:10:46But I remember talking to his wart and he's like, yeah, it's
- 1:10:49my 20th year. And that means I've driven the
- 1:10:51whole thing 20 times. Only ever, you know, And it's
- 1:10:54crazy to think, but that's, that's just how it is.
- 1:10:56That's how they do it for safety and for practice yeah yeah why
- 1:11:01they couldn't close this all precious public Rd. for like 2
- 1:11:05more hours and like let us do it I don't know but and then now
- 1:11:09though the rent I'll. Tell you why, Johnny, it's a
- 1:11:13toll road and they're missing out if for every hour that it's
- 1:11:16closed, they're not bringing in that income that's.
- 1:11:19People say now they rent it out so like Lamborghini rented it
- 1:11:23and you know, they set a they set a Pikes Peak record, but
- 1:11:27they didn't do it in competition.
- 1:11:28So I I say it doesn't count, right?
- 1:11:31close quotes is the day of in competition with everybody else.
- 1:11:34So yeah, you got to be in that headspace.
- 1:11:38Well, so tell us about driving with Johnny.
- 1:11:42Like, how's that going? You just.
- 1:11:44Oh, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:11:45So I finally started my own YouTube channel.
- 1:11:47Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:11:48Probably 10 years too late, but whatever.
- 1:11:50I'm doing it. Yeah.
- 1:11:52It's just me driving cars. And I've noticed I'm just, it's
- 1:11:57me driving cars and then telling a lot of stories while I drive
- 1:11:59cars. And.
- 1:12:00And so I'm not, you know, it's not a straight review.
- 1:12:04It's a lot of anecdotal nonsense, so if you've enjoyed
- 1:12:08this podcast, boy, you'd love driving with John.
- 1:12:12But that's what's missing for so many YouTube channels.
- 1:12:14Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:12:17Look, somebody made the point the other day they're like, you
- 1:12:20know, oh, I really like your reviews because everyone else is
- 1:12:22like, oh, the suspension's too stiff.
- 1:12:24Yeah. And then that's it.
- 1:12:25And. And I will be like, yeah, the
- 1:12:27suspension's too stiff. And I remember talking to BMW
- 1:12:30engineers and we're like, everybody else has air
- 1:12:32suspension. Why don't you have air
- 1:12:34suspension? And they give us this cock and
- 1:12:35bull story and then the next generation they have air
- 1:12:37suspension. So that's like the the
- 1:12:39difference. And yeah, so it's it's a lot of
- 1:12:44that. And then I started and it's just
- 1:12:47easy. I sit right here.
- 1:12:48I kind of have the camera more like this.
- 1:12:51You can see more in the backyard.
- 1:12:52But I do this segment called of the show thing called Talking
- 1:12:55with Johnny where I took AQ and A and it's just, I just kind of
- 1:12:58BS for like 20 minutes and answer people's questions.
- 1:13:01And that's really fun. I've really enjoyed that much
- 1:13:04more than I thought I would. I kind of just did it like it's
- 1:13:08just one of those things like I was, you know, we're putting out
- 1:13:12one review video a week and I was, well, it's not enough.
- 1:13:15You got to do more content, which you don't have to do.
- 1:13:17But I was freaking out. So I just said like, what can I
- 1:13:20film myself and not fuck up? And I fucked the first one up.
- 1:13:24So you never saw that, But yeah, that was the draft version.
- 1:13:30That was the no audio. So, you know, if you can read
- 1:13:32lips, it was fantastic. But so.
- 1:13:36So, yeah. So now we got talking with
- 1:13:39Johnny. And then like when I went to
- 1:13:41Goodwood, I did a thing where I walked around and just kind of
- 1:13:44like just filmed what I was looking at.
- 1:13:46Some of it was with Schaefer. I interviewed some people.
- 1:13:50So might that might become a segment like Walking with
- 1:13:53Johnny. So I might do Car Week that way.
- 1:13:55Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:13:57And and then, like Lindsay went to the first one, but that cars
- 1:14:00and coffee that me and Sang are doing at the Helms Bakery.
- 1:14:04Last one, we we filmed some of it, but it really wasn't enough
- 1:14:08for its own video. We're going to film the next
- 1:14:10one. Which September 21st.
- 1:14:12Whoo. Yeah.
- 1:14:13There. Excellent.
- 1:14:14September 21st. Yeah, Mark calendars if you want
- 1:14:17some coffee, but we're going to film that.
- 1:14:19And so that'll be like a walking with Johnny and yeah, I mean,
- 1:14:23yeah, going crazy with this wonderful name naming convention
- 1:14:27I came up with. But with Johnny's, Yeah, it's
- 1:14:31going well. I mean, I can, I got, I got
- 1:14:33YouTube Studio right here. Let's see.
- 1:14:35I got what are we up to? We're up to, we're up to almost
- 1:14:418000 subscribers and that's pretty good.
- 1:14:45Yeah, a couple. It's been like almost two
- 1:14:46months. Yeah.
- 1:14:49So it's, it's, it's going well, you know, making a little money
- 1:14:52already, which is exciting and way ahead of my, my own schedule
- 1:14:57and really nice. What's that?
- 1:14:59That's always nice. Yeah, it was, it was I expected
- 1:15:04to make money, but but the amount I'm making now, I was
- 1:15:07expecting to make in four months from now, if that makes sense,
- 1:15:09or three months from now. Yeah, it's a little ahead of
- 1:15:12schedule, so that's great. That's always a good surprise.
- 1:15:15Nobody's going to complain about that for sure.
- 1:15:17I'm not complaining. I'm not complaining.
- 1:15:18No, I've really been enjoying it.
- 1:15:20And it's, you know, a I'll leave his name out of it, but
- 1:15:25absolutely insane. Friend of mine is like, oh,
- 1:15:26you're going to be making 300 grand a month.
- 1:15:28So I'm looking forward to that and stay tuned.
- 1:15:32You heard it for first who needs commercial real estate when you
- 1:15:36have your own YouTube channel? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:15:38I mean 3. 100 grand a month. This guy isn't from Denver, is
- 1:15:40he? That means you'll be a Mistral
- 1:15:42money. But I was going to say you'll be
- 1:15:43in a Mistral in no time. Well, take some time, but but
- 1:15:46but you know, I could, I could get a, a slightly used
- 1:15:49Lamborghini of some variety. So yeah, absolutely.
- 1:15:53Yeah. That means a Mistral would be
- 1:15:55possibly possible as opposed to not at all.
- 1:16:00I mean, boy, 5.5 million, that's before options, right?
- 1:16:03You know, like that's the base. Yeah, Actually.
- 1:16:06So my favorite thing about the Mistral, my favorite thing about
- 1:16:09the Mistral was there's a, the shifter has a little kind of a
- 1:16:14glass cut out where there's a, there's an elephant reared up on
- 1:16:18its hind legs. And it's, it's the, it's a
- 1:16:21Bugatti Hun ornament from the Royale.
- 1:16:23And it was, it's, it's a reproduction of Rembrandt.
- 1:16:26Bugatti was a Tory Bugatti's brother and he was a pretty well
- 1:16:29known sculptor at the time. And he used to sit at the zoo
- 1:16:32and Antwerp in Belgium and then sketch pictures of animals and
- 1:16:37then sculpt them. And he did this elephant up on
- 1:16:40its rear legs. But I'll never forget.
- 1:16:41I was reading the press release and Occam, I can't remember his
- 1:16:44last name, but the, the the head is designed for Bugatti Occam.
- 1:16:47He goes, yeah, you know, there's an elephant in there, but you
- 1:16:50could do whatever you want. You could do your wife, your
- 1:16:52kids, your dog, your elephant. And he's like, yes, I am really
- 1:16:58sick of having someone else's elephant in my Griff shift
- 1:17:02lever. I really want my own.
- 1:17:04You know, it's about time that Stampy got his own goddamn
- 1:17:08statue, You know what I mean? Like so that was this is just
- 1:17:12unacceptable. What are we doing here?
- 1:17:14So I might buy if I win the Lotto the 340 mil I might buy an
- 1:17:17elephant and a mistral so I can get my own elephant.
- 1:17:19That's amazing. That is amazing.
- 1:17:22I don't want Rembrandt thinking old elephant.
- 1:17:24Yeah, American elephant nonsense.
- 1:17:28Yeah, right, right. An Indian elephant when you
- 1:17:31could have had an African elephant.
- 1:17:32Yeah, it's yeah, Yeah, right, right.
- 1:17:35Yeah. Couple more.
- 1:17:38Well, I. Know I was going to say it's
- 1:17:40just more elephant jokes. It's fine, Ryan, Go.
- 1:17:44Ahead we have time for a couple more listener questions, mostly
- 1:17:47because I want to say this person's Instagram handle, which
- 1:17:50is hobo wine taster. He's a long time listener with a
- 1:17:55great name. He would like to know the best
- 1:17:58tactile car experiences you ever have had.
- 1:18:01So I think he's thinking like Lotus Elise.
- 1:18:05Type opposed to what? Like disembodied car
- 1:18:07experiences. Hacked.
- 1:18:10Which guys feel the did? You rise above the car.
- 1:18:15If you had to go Helen Keller on a car.
- 1:18:18Yeah, I don't, I don't really. I don't really know what he
- 1:18:20means, if he's like most memorable interior or something.
- 1:18:26I'm thinking like, what are the the cars where you just feel
- 1:18:28most at one with the car I think is what he's going for.
- 1:18:31The Mr. And that is the answer to everything, right?
- 1:18:35Like you know, the answer is not Miata, it's a Mistral.
- 1:18:38Oh no, no, no Miata, no Mistral. Right on, right on you.
- 1:18:44Heard this answer already. We know.
- 1:18:45Yes, yeah, I mean to me, and again, I'm this is my own weird
- 1:18:50hang ups, but when I hear stuff like what's the most tactile,
- 1:18:53what's the most analog? You know, like if I said 19-O3
- 1:19:00Mercedes Simplex, you'd say like I've never I don't know what
- 1:19:03that is. So I don't care about your
- 1:19:04answer. If I said, you know, if I said
- 1:19:10Nissan GTR, you'd say, oh, but that I read that car has no soul
- 1:19:15because I wouldn't I had the soul changed on my Porsche.
- 1:19:18Like I hate stuff like those are just weasel words for like
- 1:19:23people. Like I hate progress.
- 1:19:26I'm a grumpy old man. So I, you know, we'll shit on
- 1:19:28your question hobo wine tastes. I hate it.
- 1:19:30If you don't sit along with Gord while you drive with a killer.
- 1:19:33We're all jacked. Yeah, OK.
- 1:19:37Yeah, you know what I mean. Like what?
- 1:19:39What is he talking about? Yeah, I don't.
- 1:19:41I don't and again, I don't think he's even asking that question
- 1:19:46for him. I think he's trying to like fill
- 1:19:48a bucket to get like cred that like tactile means like natural
- 1:19:53aspirated V10 manual, like hey, I drove a lot of those.
- 1:19:57They're called Vipers. They mostly suck, you know, so,
- 1:20:02so the answer is not Viper. I don't know what he's talking
- 1:20:06about. You know, I'm assuming the worst
- 1:20:08because I'm just in that frame of mind.
- 1:20:10Here's the one from Scandomaniac.
- 1:20:12Scandomaniac. He likes the the cars of the
- 1:20:14North. What 2000s car would you buy if
- 1:20:18you had to drive a 2000s car? Does he mean like 2000 to 2010?
- 1:20:23Yes, yes. Yes.
- 1:20:25Well, Carrera GT, Porsche Carrera GT which is the V10
- 1:20:28manual. Yeah.
- 1:20:30Yeah. But but yeah, you know that that
- 1:20:32that's just a good retirement plan.
- 1:20:34But but probably quicker and better handling than that would
- 1:20:36be like a a Nissan GTR, which is probably my actual answer.
- 1:20:41I I love me and GTR and it came out in O 8 as an O9 model.
- 1:20:45So that sneaks in there. And I I.
- 1:20:49I have such love for that car. And again, you know, for all
- 1:20:54those, it doesn't have a soul people.
- 1:20:55What the fuck are you talking about, B?
- 1:20:58Like if you're going to say, oh, it's too computerized, well,
- 1:21:01first of all, it's like a 2009 computer.
- 1:21:02What, what the hell could it do? Nothing.
- 1:21:04But also like, if you just turn the traction control off,
- 1:21:08nothing's happening. Maybe the computer's deciding
- 1:21:11where to send the, the, the torque to the front axle.
- 1:21:14But like everyone does that, you know, they just did it first,
- 1:21:17but they did it really, really, really well.
- 1:21:19And just unbelievably wonderful cars that that are actually
- 1:21:24like, are appreciated in the marketplace.
- 1:21:26Like go look at used GTR prices. Like talk about not budging.
- 1:21:31You know, the kids on the Internet, you know, they're
- 1:21:33worried about souls and you know, all that and, you know,
- 1:21:35whatever, but excellent car. I would, I would love to have
- 1:21:38one of those. Yeah.
- 1:21:39So what I'm hearing is if you turn the traction control off,
- 1:21:42the soul goes back into the car. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:21:45That's the soul back. In all this.
- 1:21:47Code for it, yeah. The soul, look, the soul not
- 1:21:50having soul is code for being like made by Asian people
- 1:21:53instead of white people. Like all that is because somehow
- 1:21:56German cars have a soul automatically because they're
- 1:21:58German. But the Nissan doesn't, you
- 1:22:02know? So this is some racist monkey.
- 1:22:04BS, you know. There's a lot going on there.
- 1:22:08I think on that note, we will say that's all for this week.
- 1:22:14All right? We've covered so much and it was
- 1:22:17so good to see you and catch up. And I'm excited for your YouTube
- 1:22:21channel. Yeah, see you where it goes from
- 1:22:23there. Driving with Johnny.
- 1:22:26Yes. Driving me Johnny and the next
- 1:22:29Helms Bakery Cars and Coffee, which is an amazing event if
- 1:22:32you're in Southern California. It is.
- 1:22:33Yeah. It's worth your time.
- 1:22:35It's gonna be the 21st of September.
- 1:22:38Helms Bakery. Get there at 7:00 AM If you want
- 1:22:40a parking spot, get there at 8:00 if you don't.
- 1:22:42Right. And if you want coffee and a
- 1:22:44breakfast burrito, get there at 7:00.
- 1:22:46Yeah, we're, we're, we've, we figured that out.
- 1:22:49We actually had a table last time and we had coffee and
- 1:22:51burritos available before 8:00. So amazing.
- 1:22:54Yeah, solve that problem right there.
- 1:22:56Look at that. You have you're iterate.
- 1:22:57You're already iterating and evolving.
- 1:23:01I just have to say you have great branding and posters for
- 1:23:03that event. I don't know who does that, but.
- 1:23:05It's a good looking some AI program.
- 1:23:08And then I did the, I did the typesetting.
- 1:23:10I'm I'm. Really.
- 1:23:11OK. I'm an old I'm an old font nerd
- 1:23:13from. It looks great.
- 1:23:14Right on. Thanks.
- 1:23:15Yeah, Job well done. Job well.
- 1:23:17Done. It's been actually spent a lot
- 1:23:18of time on that. So thank you.
- 1:23:20Well, it shows and it's, I missed the last one, but the
- 1:23:24first one, that's what everybody was saying was it was such an
- 1:23:26interesting mix of cars and people and it really was like
- 1:23:30you couldn't walk 3 feet without seeing a friend.
- 1:23:33And it was a really cool variety of cars and it was fun to see.
- 1:23:36I think there was a group of 2000 twos that got together and
- 1:23:41all came together very early in the morning.
- 1:23:43So it was just really unique and definitely worth checking out.
- 1:23:46And the food's delicious. So yeah, no, it was really
- 1:23:49recommend. Good times with good vibes.
- 1:23:51It was, it was a good, it was a good, good, good, good
- 1:23:53experience. And yeah, we, we kind of
- 1:23:55replicated it. Early June's probably a bad time
- 1:23:58to do it. Just, you know, everyone's on
- 1:23:59vacation. Also, it was the day of the
- 1:24:01riots in LA when the National Guard got called out.
- 1:24:04So I had a lot of people like, I'm not going to risk it.
- 1:24:06I'm like. Oh Jesus, all right, be all
- 1:24:08right. You know it's never dull, right?
- 1:24:11Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:24:14Well, on that note, on that note, we will.
- 1:24:16Happy guys, appreciate it. Yeah.
- 1:24:18Thank you, Johnny. Thank you so much.
- 1:24:21We're that car show and remember always be driving.
