- 0:02Speaker 1: Well, good morning everybody. I hope your new year twenty
- 0:05Speaker 1: twenty five is off to a great start. Thanks for
- 0:08Speaker 1: tuning into this best of episode of the Repco Lite
- 0:11Speaker 1: Home Improvement Show. Next week, I'm back with all new stuff,
- 0:14Speaker 1: but I've got one more week of classics. Enjoy well, Hayley,
- 0:18Speaker 1: let's solve the winter blues problems for people, because I
- 0:23Speaker 1: know that we've had really nice weather for the last
- 0:25Speaker 1: week or two, and we have delayed talking about this
- 0:28Speaker 1: topic because we've had really nice weather. We've looked ahead
- 0:31Speaker 1: and decided this was not the time to talk about
- 0:34Speaker 1: killing the winter blues. But we know that winter is
- 0:37Speaker 1: still lurking.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:39Speaker 3: No, this is the worst time of winter because you
- 0:41Speaker 3: get built all this little hope, you know, because you
- 0:44Speaker 3: get these weeks of nice weather. Anythink, Oh, I'm I'm
- 0:48Speaker 3: in the clear now. Yeah, Like we're done with this right,
- 0:52Speaker 3: no booth sailing.
- 0:53Speaker 1: And I normally I would be done with it. I've learned,
- 0:57Speaker 1: you know, I'm fifty years old and I finally figured
- 0:59Speaker 1: it out. And even though I've had plenty of days
- 1:02Speaker 1: in the past weeks where I'm outside in shorts, t
- 1:04Speaker 1: shirts and winter boots, I know that that's not how
- 1:07Speaker 1: it's going to stay.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Huh, I said, you're one of those people.
- 1:11Speaker 1: You're surprised that I'm one of those people that surprises me.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Now Winner's coming back, and with it, the winter blues
- 1:17Speaker 1: come back, and we all know what that feels like.
- 1:20Speaker 1: And I know there's all kinds it's crushing, and there's
- 1:23Speaker 1: all kinds of things that you can do to fix it.
- 1:26Speaker 1: The whole online world is full of recommendations. You can exercise.
- 1:31Speaker 1: I don't want to exercise struggling with the winter blues. Man,
- 1:35Speaker 1: the last thing I want to do is crunches or whatever.
- 1:37Speaker 2: You get a lamp, you can get a lamp.
- 1:39Speaker 1: You can eat right. That one really gets me. I
- 1:44Speaker 1: don't want to eat right. I want to eat a
- 1:45Speaker 1: bag of snickers right now and just process the depression outside. Right.
- 1:52Speaker 1: So all of those recommendations are ridiculous. They're not ridiculous,
- 1:56Speaker 1: I'm sure somebody, but they're not for Dan. They're not
- 1:58Speaker 1: for me.
- 2:00Speaker 3: I'm solving the people's winter blues problem. We're solving Dan's
- 2:03Speaker 3: winter blues fight.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Right, And I am going to solve my winter blues
- 2:08Speaker 1: problems by planning this year. And I've started this process
- 2:11Speaker 1: and it has worked so well. You can tell by
- 2:15Speaker 1: the upbeat nature with which I'm delivering all of this information.
- 2:19Speaker 1: It really has helped me. And the reason it's well,
- 2:22Speaker 1: there's so many reasons. I think we're just going to
- 2:24Speaker 1: work through it step by step. What I've started doing,
- 2:27Speaker 1: let's start with that. That's really important is planning, and
- 2:30Speaker 1: I'm planning for projects that are upcoming, and my particular projects.
- 2:35Speaker 1: The reason this has really panned out for me is
- 2:37Speaker 1: my projects are outdoor projects. Okay, so when we had
- 2:41Speaker 1: the nice weather, I start thinking about, oh man, I
- 2:43Speaker 1: wish I could get outside, and then I know it's
- 2:45Speaker 1: going to get cold again. So rather than sit here
- 2:47Speaker 1: with that depression, I start planning out how I'm going
- 2:50Speaker 1: to fix the deck so that's going to be beautiful
- 2:52Speaker 1: when the time comes, and I get all excited, yes,
- 2:55Speaker 1: thinking about that good weather again, or the shed or
- 2:57Speaker 1: the garage.
- 2:58Speaker 3: You know, and give something gives do something really positive
- 3:01Speaker 3: to focus on, because these are all really positive, productive
- 3:05Speaker 3: things to do in the future, and it feels like
- 3:08Speaker 3: you're already starting the process now because you are planning.
- 3:12Speaker 3: We get so much satisfaction from planning. Sometimes you don't
- 3:15Speaker 3: have to do the project.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Some people just like the planning, some people like the planning.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Not everybody likes the planning. I think the people who
- 3:23Speaker 1: don't like the planning maybe aren't doing it right. And
- 3:26Speaker 1: I'm certainly I've been in that group, you know, And
- 3:29Speaker 1: I think, how do you do planning wrong? Well, you
- 3:32Speaker 1: do planning wrong by starting planning four hours before your projects. Yeah,
- 3:36Speaker 1: that's not going to start. Well, that's what people think
- 3:38Speaker 1: of as planning, and that doesn't work. Or why else
- 3:42Speaker 1: would they hate planning? Because not everybody loves planning.
- 3:46Speaker 2: I think people like doing.
- 3:48Speaker 3: You know, some people are active, physical people that they
- 3:51Speaker 3: just want to start doing.
- 3:53Speaker 1: What are you implying that I'm not? No, the way
- 3:56Speaker 1: you looked at me. No, okay, I mean maybe that
- 3:59Speaker 1: was awkward. Okay, I wish I hadn't drawn attention to that.
- 4:04Speaker 3: No.
- 4:04Speaker 1: I think what you hit on there is we don't
- 4:07Speaker 1: think of planning as doing. I think that's the answer,
- 4:10Speaker 1: and planning feels like a waste of time. I should
- 4:13Speaker 1: be accomplishing this so I can get to the next thing. Hayley,
- 4:16Speaker 1: You're brilliant. See you fixed the problem. I didn't know
- 4:19Speaker 1: what the answer was. Now we do planning is activity.
- 4:22Speaker 1: It's ridiculously important activity, and if you don't accomplish it,
- 4:26Speaker 1: your actual physical activities are going to be less productive.
- 4:30Speaker 1: So jump into planning. You mentioned that it gives your
- 4:33Speaker 1: mind something productive to work on. For me, what's happened
- 4:36Speaker 1: with this planning? Not only am I looking at summer
- 4:38Speaker 1: projects that are upcoming that I'm excited to tackle. And
- 4:42Speaker 1: that's really good. As I'm heading into a project to
- 4:44Speaker 1: be excited to tackle it, I'm building up some energy
- 4:47Speaker 1: meding ahead. But I'm also letting go of some of
- 4:51Speaker 1: the introspection that I've found myself doing. I have found
- 4:54Speaker 1: myself when I've got downtime thinking too much about myself
- 5:00Speaker 1: and things that I need to change. And I know
- 5:03Speaker 1: that's surprising that there's anything really I mean, people see
- 5:07Speaker 1: this and listen to me, and probably figure of all
- 5:10Speaker 1: the people who've got it together.
- 5:11Speaker 3: You go in kind of a negative direction, is what
- 5:13Speaker 3: you're saying. When you've got too much downtime, I do
- 5:16Speaker 3: isteat of your mind, getting focused, I.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Don't get productive. Yeah, it's not positive at all. Negative,
- 5:21Speaker 1: it's negative. Yeah, boy, you need to exercise more. What's
- 5:24Speaker 1: wrong with you? And then I turn it on everybody else.
- 5:27Speaker 1: I've got lists of all the things that children do
- 5:29Speaker 1: that should be changed. It's not productive, it's not positive.
- 5:33Speaker 1: This has become positive, so I'm recommending that. It's It's
- 5:36Speaker 1: really been a big difference for me. What could you
- 5:39Speaker 1: plan out right now? I mean so much, so many
- 5:41Speaker 1: things color. If you've got a project coming up, you're
- 5:44Speaker 1: thinking about your kitchen, your bathroom, something like that. Get
- 5:47Speaker 1: the colors worked out right now. You are going to
- 5:49Speaker 1: save yourself so much time down the road, and more
- 5:51Speaker 1: importantly than time, you're going to save money and you're
- 5:54Speaker 1: gonna make a much better color decision.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Well, yeah, you are going to save money.
- 5:57Speaker 3: And I feel like that's part of planning that I
- 6:00Speaker 3: really like too, is that yes, you're not gonna make
- 6:02Speaker 3: the mistake, and so you're saving money in that way.
- 6:04Speaker 3: But also you can start saving for that project now
- 6:08Speaker 3: because you've done all the planning. If you're a planner
- 6:11Speaker 3: like me, you break down every single tool you're gonna need,
- 6:14Speaker 3: You price it out and so you've got your budget
- 6:16Speaker 3: for the project. And now if I can't afford to
- 6:19Speaker 3: do that, now, it's depressing. But if I'm planning and
- 6:21Speaker 3: I'm looking.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Towards the future.
- 6:23Speaker 3: It's not depressing because I can say, Okay, I'm gonna
- 6:25Speaker 3: put away this much money every week so I can
- 6:27Speaker 3: do this project in the spring.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Right. How many times don't you start a project? Let
- 6:31Speaker 1: me just talk about me. How many times do I
- 6:33Speaker 1: start a project and I don't have all of the
- 6:35Speaker 1: right tools right? Well, at that point, my budget's already
- 6:39Speaker 1: allotted for the paint that I need or the whatever
- 6:42Speaker 1: that I need. I don't have as much money to
- 6:44Speaker 1: get the tools that I need. So either I don't
- 6:47Speaker 1: use those tools or I break the budget. I never
- 6:50Speaker 1: break the budget, Hayley. I don't use those tools. I
- 6:53Speaker 1: use something else and it doesn't normally work well it's effective.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Or I get something really cheap, a really cheap version
- 7:00Speaker 1: of what I wanted that does not work as well.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Sometimes those do in a lot of instances, they just don't.
- 7:06Speaker 1: You need the right thing to make the project work,
- 7:08Speaker 1: and by planning ahead, you're going to catch all of
- 7:11Speaker 1: those things exactly, And like you said, you can budget
- 7:13Speaker 1: the money for it. A lot of what I do
- 7:15Speaker 1: is I'll actually not just budget it. I've set it aside.
- 7:18Speaker 1: It goes to another place. So it's not even like
- 7:21Speaker 1: it's my money anymore. Right off to the.
- 7:22Speaker 3: Side, project's you know, set aside already, it's right done
- 7:26Speaker 3: in that way.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Now, I love that part about planning. It's going to
- 7:29Speaker 1: save so many big problems down the road. You know.
- 7:32Speaker 1: You can figure out your paint colors, you can figure
- 7:33Speaker 1: out your tools, you can figure out the process.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Yeah, if you've never done something before, I think that
- 7:38Speaker 3: really stands in our way later on, because we're just
- 7:41Speaker 3: too intimidated by a project, and so we never get
- 7:43Speaker 3: to it. We put it off, we decide that we can't.
- 7:46Speaker 3: And if you're really buying into this planning process, now
- 7:50Speaker 3: you've got all the time to learn about the process,
- 7:53Speaker 3: do the research. Come into a repcollate store and talk
- 7:56Speaker 3: to us. You don't have to buy something every time
- 7:58Speaker 3: you come in. Just come and talk to us about
- 8:00Speaker 3: a project so that we can be there when you're ready.
- 8:03Speaker 1: If you want to buy something every time you come in,
- 8:05Speaker 1: that's absolutely fine. Well, we like talking to you too, Right,
- 8:09Speaker 1: all of those things. Another thing about planning is that
- 8:12Speaker 1: it's fun. Now it can be fun. Now you've got
- 8:14Speaker 1: nothing else cooking right right, we're sitting inside the big
- 8:17Speaker 1: storm of twenty three is just around the corner. If
- 8:21Speaker 1: you're sitting inside during that, planning is fun and it's productive. Later,
- 8:25Speaker 1: when the project is starting and you just want to
- 8:28Speaker 1: see results, planning is no fun and you don't want
- 8:31Speaker 1: to do it at all.
- 8:32Speaker 3: When it is really warm outside, when it is springtime,
- 8:35Speaker 3: that's the last thing that I want to be doing
- 8:37Speaker 3: because I've got to get stuff in the ground. Now,
- 8:39Speaker 3: you know, I love garden planning. That's one of the
- 8:41Speaker 3: things that I love doing this time of year. I
- 8:43Speaker 3: hate doing it in the spring because I just want
- 8:45Speaker 3: to start doing the thing now. Planning is like miserable
- 8:49Speaker 3: at that point.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Right, All right, let's take a quick break and then
- 8:51Speaker 1: it's time to dig into a wood flory finishing project.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Don't go anywhere. You're listening to a special best of
- 9:09Speaker 1: episode of The Repel Light Home Improvement Show sponsored by
- 9:12Speaker 1: Benjamin Moore. Welcome back. You're listening to the Repel Light
- 9:15Speaker 1: Home Improvement Show sponsored by Benjamin Moore, and right now
- 9:18Speaker 1: I'm joined by Ali Bride from Mustard Seed Beginnings. Ali,
- 9:22Speaker 1: glad you could be here today.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for having me. I'm really excited.
- 9:25Speaker 1: So Mustard Seed Beginnings, you've been on the show a
- 9:27Speaker 1: couple times, but just remind people.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Yeah, so I share DIY interior design content across social
- 9:34Speaker 2: media platforms.
- 9:35Speaker 1: All right, So you do all kinds of different projects,
- 9:37Speaker 1: and recently you jumped into a pretty big one sanding
- 9:41Speaker 1: staining I think sanding staining refinishing your hardwood floors. Yeah,
- 9:46Speaker 1: and I want to talk about that project, and let's
- 9:48Speaker 1: just start at the beginning. How big of an area
- 9:52Speaker 1: did you end up redoing and what inspired you to
- 9:54Speaker 1: take this on in the first place. It's a new house, right.
- 9:57Speaker 2: Newer, so it's about twenty years old. It's to you,
- 10:00Speaker 2: new to me, yees. So we moved in October. I
- 10:03Speaker 2: think the carpet was original. There was a couple of
- 10:05Speaker 2: carpet patches in the office and then living room space
- 10:09Speaker 2: that were just really tired and ready to be, you know, replaced.
- 10:12Speaker 2: So we decided instead of replacing a carpet, we were
- 10:15Speaker 2: just tying in old hickory floors that were already existing.
- 10:18Speaker 2: So we had new hickory floors installed, which then, of
- 10:21Speaker 2: course you have to refinish them and make them all matched,
- 10:24Speaker 2: so we did. There were it was factory finished floor,
- 10:27Speaker 2: the original hickory floor that was there, and it was
- 10:30Speaker 2: ready to be redone. Anyway, about every twenty years. You
- 10:33Speaker 2: really should redo your floors ten to twenty years. So anyway, yeah, wow,
- 10:38Speaker 2: it was a lot.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Okay, I didn't know you were trying to patch the
- 10:41Speaker 1: two together. We did.
- 10:42Speaker 2: We hired someone to do that and he did a
- 10:44Speaker 2: great job. But then you know, we decided to save
- 10:47Speaker 2: a little money and do the rest of it ourselves.
- 10:49Speaker 1: All right, So that kind of gets me through this
- 10:52Speaker 1: next question. I was curious about the condition of the floors.
- 10:54Speaker 1: So the floors that were existing, hickery floors that were
- 10:57Speaker 1: already there, Yeah, they were, like you just said, kind
- 11:00Speaker 1: of in need of.
- 11:01Speaker 2: They were tired. I mean, they've just shown a lot
- 11:03Speaker 2: of wear and tear on the floor, and so the
- 11:06Speaker 2: factory finish that was on there was starting to peel
- 11:10Speaker 2: up and bubble and just not look great. You could
- 11:13Speaker 2: see a lot of sun damage in different spots, and
- 11:15Speaker 2: like I said, you really should restand and kind of
- 11:20Speaker 2: restain your floor every so often when you have hardwoods,
- 11:23Speaker 2: just as maintenance.
- 11:24Speaker 1: So you've got that going on. You're looking at all
- 11:26Speaker 1: of that. How did you prepare for You know, I'm
- 11:30Speaker 1: a planner and sometimes I never leave that stage. I
- 11:34Speaker 1: live in the planning stage, which is its own fault.
- 11:36Speaker 1: I mean, that's a big problem. But how did you
- 11:39Speaker 1: prepare for this? That's a major job.
- 11:41Speaker 2: It's a major job. This is our second time we've
- 11:43Speaker 2: done this. The first time, like, nothing prepares you really
- 11:46Speaker 2: when you're living in a house, because the last time
- 11:48Speaker 2: we didn't live in the house and this time we did.
- 11:50Speaker 2: So I didn't plan. We're a little more spontaneous. We
- 11:53Speaker 2: just jump into it and figured it out as we go.
- 11:55Speaker 2: But it was interesting, all right, Okay, we have a
- 11:59Speaker 2: big burn mountain dog that we were taking in and
- 12:01Speaker 2: out of the basement window. We were living in the
- 12:04Speaker 2: basement area. There was a little like kitchenet down there,
- 12:06Speaker 2: so it's okay, it worked out well. But you know,
- 12:08Speaker 2: the window was our door for you know, three four
- 12:12Speaker 2: days while we were doing the poly and yeah, it
- 12:15Speaker 2: was it was a process.
- 12:16Speaker 1: My goodness. So you didn't do a lot of planning
- 12:20Speaker 1: and preparing ahead of time. You just kind of jumped in.
- 12:22Speaker 2: We just kind of jumped in and we were really
- 12:24Speaker 2: at the mercy of when the installer could come and start.
- 12:28Speaker 2: So that was about a week process for them to
- 12:31Speaker 2: install the two rooms and then he also did our
- 12:34Speaker 2: staircase going upstairs. So they were there and then it
- 12:37Speaker 2: was kind of like once they decided they were coming,
- 12:40Speaker 2: you know, within like maybe three or four days, and
- 12:42Speaker 2: then it's kind of just you just figure it out.
- 12:46Speaker 1: So pulling the carpet, you guys did that yourself? We
- 12:48Speaker 1: did do that way ahead of time, or did you
- 12:50Speaker 1: did you got the phone call.
- 12:52Speaker 2: When we got the phone call, it was that process like.
- 12:54Speaker 1: It always came up.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Yeah, it came up really easily.
- 12:57Speaker 1: It really did fastic.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Oh no, it wasn't terrible. Jordan did it. I can't
- 13:01Speaker 2: say that I did it. Okay, he did it, and
- 13:04Speaker 2: I watched the carpet.
- 13:05Speaker 1: I don't think was so bad. Then you ripped out
- 13:07Speaker 1: all the.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Tax strips or on the edge, yep, we did, and
- 13:10Speaker 2: that came up really easily too. So and I say
- 13:12Speaker 2: that from coming from a nineteen forties house because it
- 13:15Speaker 2: was always a little more difficult, you know, because materials
- 13:18Speaker 2: different or whatever, and this stuff came up pretty easily.
- 13:21Speaker 2: It's pretty straightforward. It was the only carpet that had
- 13:23Speaker 2: been there, so it's not like you're messing with different
- 13:25Speaker 2: layers or whatever. So it came up and there was plywood,
- 13:27Speaker 2: and you know you're not looking at five different layers
- 13:30Speaker 2: of floor.
- 13:31Speaker 1: All right. So you got all of that up, everything
- 13:33Speaker 1: ready to go. The guy comes in, installs the floor
- 13:36Speaker 1: and marries it to the existing he does.
- 13:39Speaker 2: He did a great job, yep, and so it just
- 13:41Speaker 2: flows really well. We decided we have a double facing
- 13:44Speaker 2: fireplace and then you know, hardwood floors on either side
- 13:48Speaker 2: from the living room, and we decided to leave there
- 13:52Speaker 2: was like a vertical piece or horizontal piece of wood
- 13:57Speaker 2: floor there that we decided just to leave because otherwise
- 13:59Speaker 2: laid intensive to take some of that stuff up and
- 14:02Speaker 2: tie it in so it's cohesive. So we decided to
- 14:05Speaker 2: leave that just for labor wise, and that made it
- 14:08Speaker 2: go a lot easier too.
- 14:09Speaker 1: So you have him come out ahead of time to
- 14:11Speaker 1: he's got to scope it out, right.
- 14:13Speaker 2: He did. He came out goodness, maybe like three months before.
- 14:18Speaker 2: And then he is you know, in high demand and
- 14:21Speaker 2: does a lot of larger homes, so he usually is
- 14:25Speaker 2: on a project for several weeks. So it was just
- 14:28Speaker 2: our job was small to him, so it was just
- 14:30Speaker 2: kind of where he could piece us in at all.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Right, So he gets it pieced together and then you've
- 14:35Speaker 1: got the process of sanding it. You're listening to the
- 14:38Speaker 1: repcol like Home Improvement show, and I'm in the studio
- 14:40Speaker 1: right now with Ali Bride from Mustard Seed Beginnings, and
- 14:43Speaker 1: we're talking about a wood floor that Ali recently sanded, refinished, YEP,
- 14:48Speaker 1: had installed, and then did all of this. So now
- 14:50Speaker 1: you've got the new floor installed, your old floor is there.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Now everything's kind of married together. Now the sanding starts, right, yeah,
- 14:59Speaker 1: the standing starts.
- 15:00Speaker 2: So the new floor that they installed was unfinished hickory.
- 15:03Speaker 2: And again, so the old floor was pret factory finished hickory,
- 15:07Speaker 2: which you can buy. It's still hardwood. It just is
- 15:10Speaker 2: finished somewhere else. It's not finished on site. And so
- 15:13Speaker 2: what we didn't realize and what our contractor tried to
- 15:15Speaker 2: tell us, which I'm a little stubborn, I'm like, you know,
- 15:17Speaker 2: I can do it. It's gonna be easy. He's like,
- 15:19Speaker 2: you know, just so you know, this may be really
- 15:21Speaker 2: difficult to get off. And I'm like, well, we've done
- 15:24Speaker 2: this before, it'll be fine. But then when we rented
- 15:28Speaker 2: the sanders and we started standing, I immediately called him
- 15:32Speaker 2: within an hour because it started burning like it smelled
- 15:35Speaker 2: like it was burning and it was black, and so
- 15:37Speaker 2: he came out and he's like, yeah, I tried the finish.
- 15:39Speaker 1: It well, I used to be an aluminum oxide. I
- 15:42Speaker 1: don't know what it is.
- 15:43Speaker 2: I don't know either.
- 15:44Speaker 1: It's really really durable, those prefs, it.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Is, Yeah, and so that means it was really hard
- 15:50Speaker 2: to get off, and he was right, so yeah, I
- 15:53Speaker 2: kind of like burned the first couple layers and smelled horrendous.
- 15:56Speaker 2: It was kind of like black and patchy, and I'm thinking,
- 15:58Speaker 2: like we've runed these floor or this is not good.
- 16:01Speaker 2: But it did come off. I think it took us.
- 16:04Speaker 2: I think we sanded for a week, like seven days.
- 16:07Speaker 2: We sanded, and.
- 16:08Speaker 1: You had what kind of equipment did you rent?
- 16:10Speaker 2: We rented the push behind sander, like a drum sander,
- 16:13Speaker 2: and then we had like, I don't know what it's called,
- 16:15Speaker 2: little like edging sander, but it's big. It's probably, you know,
- 16:19Speaker 2: bigger than a basketball, and you go around and do
- 16:22Speaker 2: the edges. And then we also had to use my
- 16:25Speaker 2: husband used, oh what's it called. It's like a tool.
- 16:30Speaker 1: It's not a.
- 16:32Speaker 2: To get in the corners. That was our biggest hassle
- 16:35Speaker 2: in the corners instead of going around with the edger
- 16:37Speaker 2: that's round. You have to get in that triangle, which
- 16:40Speaker 2: is difficult. So we had to kind of rig a
- 16:42Speaker 2: few things up to make that work.
- 16:44Speaker 1: To make it work, you know that we rent out
- 16:46Speaker 1: Maybe you don't know we rent out that on floor
- 16:48Speaker 1: machine that's made.
- 16:49Speaker 2: To no Dan.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Yeah, why do you tell me? Well, I didn't know
- 16:54Speaker 1: you were doing this, since by the time I realized
- 16:57Speaker 1: you were doing it. See Ali works with me. You know,
- 16:59Speaker 1: we'd gone for a we talk about all these different projects. Yeah,
- 17:02Speaker 1: you're using products from rep collect if we're going to
- 17:05Speaker 1: get to and by the time I realized what you
- 17:07Speaker 1: were doing, the standing was over. Oh say anything. Yeah,
- 17:12Speaker 1: you're just gonna be hand ringing. I'll wait till I
- 17:14Speaker 1: can say it on the radio and record your reaction.
- 17:17Speaker 2: That's a bummer, I'm sure that. Yeah, that's a good one.
- 17:20Speaker 2: Right on the floor.
- 17:21Speaker 1: The floor machine works is you can control it with
- 17:24Speaker 1: one hand. With what you're doing, you probably it's it's
- 17:27Speaker 1: a fair amount of control. I mean you've got to
- 17:28Speaker 1: really rain that machine and that you rented. This thing
- 17:31Speaker 1: is just super easy. Walks over the floor. It's got
- 17:33Speaker 1: a vacuum attachment. There's no dust on the Where were you?
- 17:39Speaker 1: I was here. I just you had moved too fast,
- 17:42Speaker 1: you were too prompt. Yeah, you jumped right in.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Yeah we did.
- 17:44Speaker 1: You'd have done your planning.
- 17:46Speaker 2: No, no, you know I'm not good at that if
- 17:48Speaker 2: we just missed.
- 17:48Speaker 1: So Anyway, if you're doing this project, there is perhaps
- 17:52Speaker 1: an easier way than what Ali did. It's a rental.
- 17:55Speaker 1: I'll put links in the show notes or information in
- 17:57Speaker 1: the show notes. Otherwise, just email me radio at replight
- 18:00Speaker 1: dot com. It's on the west side right now, west
- 18:02Speaker 1: side of Michigan. We don't have a way to, you know,
- 18:05Speaker 1: conveniently transport that to the east side for you guys
- 18:07Speaker 1: out there listening, but west side listeners, we definitely do
- 18:10Speaker 1: have an option that might be easier than.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Job.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Yeah, it really would have. I'm like I said, as
- 18:18Speaker 1: I saw you were into it, I thought, not much
- 18:20Speaker 1: I can do at this point, Allie, looking at the
- 18:23Speaker 1: clock and thinking ahead, doing my planning, I'm thinking that
- 18:27Speaker 1: we should probably take a break right now and then
- 18:30Speaker 1: finish this conversation on the other side. Does that work
- 18:33Speaker 1: for you? Sure? Of course, perfect. That's what we're gonna do.
- 18:36Speaker 1: We're gonna take that break when we come back. We'll
- 18:38Speaker 1: talk about the application of the stain, the application of
- 18:41Speaker 1: the finish. Most importantly, we'll get to the end results
- 18:44Speaker 1: of the project, what you thought of it, and would
- 18:46Speaker 1: you do it again. We'll get to all of that
- 18:48Speaker 1: in just a minute. Stick around. You're listening to a
- 19:02Speaker 1: special best of episode of the Repcolite Home improvement show
- 19:05Speaker 1: sponsored by Benjamin Moore. And right now I'm in the
- 19:08Speaker 1: studio with Ali Bride from Mustard Seed Beginnings. And Ali
- 19:13Speaker 1: was here with me in the last segment, and we
- 19:15Speaker 1: started talking about a project that she tackled around her house,
- 19:18Speaker 1: a big project. She refinished some hardwood floors. Basically, had
- 19:23Speaker 1: some hardwood floors down in some areas of the house.
- 19:26Speaker 1: They were kind of tired, they needed some refreshing. She
- 19:29Speaker 1: had carpet in other areas. She pulled the carpet up,
- 19:32Speaker 1: had new hickory hardwood floors installed and married together with
- 19:37Speaker 1: the existing floor. Then she undertook a sanding process to
- 19:41Speaker 1: get all of them down to the same point, down
- 19:44Speaker 1: to barewood that she could stain. And that's where we're
- 19:47Speaker 1: at right now in the process. Right you guys got
- 19:49Speaker 1: everything sanded.
- 19:50Speaker 2: We did, and we did, like I said, sand it
- 19:52Speaker 2: for a week and we did multiple different layers and
- 19:54Speaker 2: then we're ready to stain. So we actually used Repcolite,
- 19:58Speaker 2: Snain and sealer. We chose walnut, which I feel like
- 20:02Speaker 2: is the perfect classic color. You know it doesn't you
- 20:06Speaker 2: know how some browns can kind of pull orange or
- 20:08Speaker 2: they pull a little dark. This one is so it's
- 20:12Speaker 2: literally perfect.
- 20:13Speaker 1: So you were using Finisher's touch. It's basically a relabeling,
- 20:18Speaker 1: a new branding of a product that we've had for
- 20:20Speaker 1: years and years and years. So walnut. You're mentioning how
- 20:23Speaker 1: some browns will go this color, that color orange, whatever.
- 20:26Speaker 1: A lot of that's determined, you know, by it can
- 20:28Speaker 1: be the color of the stain, of course, but it's
- 20:30Speaker 1: also the color in the wood, the wood. How did
- 20:32Speaker 1: you make sure you were going to get what you wanted?
- 20:34Speaker 2: I did a ton of sampling.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Yeah, did you bring samples into the I did? You
- 20:38Speaker 1: didn't sample on your floor? No, that would have been.
- 20:40Speaker 2: Really really we had some extra yeah, hickory floor that
- 20:43Speaker 2: I brought in. And then the guys at the seventeenth
- 20:47Speaker 2: Street location was super sweet and like put all my
- 20:50Speaker 2: samples out and then I was able to decide which
- 20:52Speaker 2: one that I wanted.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Yeah, So definitely, Again, if you're in a process like this,
- 20:56Speaker 1: you you know, maybe best case in it's a good
- 21:01Speaker 1: scenario for you. You've got extra scrap pieces, you know, if
- 21:04Speaker 1: it was just refinishing floors that were down. Now it's
- 21:07Speaker 1: a little a little more complicated, but you actually had
- 21:09Speaker 1: some scrap pieces you could bring in. Bring those scrap
- 21:11Speaker 1: pieces in because the wood, really it's probably the biggest
- 21:15Speaker 1: determinant of what that color is going to look like.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Because you know, oak trim for example, I've seen that,
- 21:21Speaker 1: you know, years back when we did tons of that.
- 21:23Speaker 1: But if the oak is redder, whiter, the same stain
- 21:26Speaker 1: on different pieces, it's going to look different. You would
- 21:28Speaker 1: never guess it's the same stain. So you did all
- 21:31Speaker 1: of that, You checked it out, made sure it looked good.
- 21:33Speaker 1: I did.
- 21:33Speaker 2: I kind of like let the traveling piece of sample,
- 21:36Speaker 2: would you know, go around each room so I could
- 21:38Speaker 2: really decide see the different lighting and make sure that
- 21:41Speaker 2: it was the perfect color. And it really was.
- 21:43Speaker 1: So you ended up with walnut yeap. Talk about the
- 21:45Speaker 1: staining process itself. What did that look like? How'd you
- 21:48Speaker 1: pull it off?
- 21:49Speaker 2: So, like I said, we're living in the basement so
- 21:53Speaker 2: it's like a whole situation. But yeah, so the finisher's
- 21:57Speaker 2: touch scene is actually a little bit thicker, so I
- 21:59Speaker 2: feel like it was less mess I.
- 22:01Speaker 1: Using a wiping stain. I did thicker stain. There is
- 22:04Speaker 1: a penetrating stain version, which is just a slightly different
- 22:07Speaker 1: application way thinner. You ended up with the wiping stain,
- 22:10Speaker 1: so it's easier to work with one.
- 22:11Speaker 2: It was easier to work with, and we applied it
- 22:13Speaker 2: with a sponge and then wiped it off with the cloth.
- 22:17Speaker 2: So I did probably like three foot sections where I
- 22:20Speaker 2: would apply and go back and wipe and then kind
- 22:22Speaker 2: of continue on in little in little.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Sections, and you didn't have problems with patchiness or anything
- 22:27Speaker 1: like that. You were able to blend it all. I did.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Yeah, and I moved pretty quickly, which I shared on
- 22:33Speaker 2: social media.
- 22:33Speaker 1: But okay, and we'll post links to that or and
- 22:35Speaker 1: we'll talk about where people could find that so they
- 22:37Speaker 1: can check it out. In fact, since you're talking right now,
- 22:40Speaker 1: if they want to check it out before you finish
- 22:42Speaker 1: up the interview, how do they find it? Oh?
- 22:43Speaker 2: Sure, So you can go to Mustard Sea beginning on
- 22:46Speaker 2: Instagram's see beginning on Facebook and then I also have
- 22:49Speaker 2: a blog which will The blog post for the flooring
- 22:51Speaker 2: will go live later this week, so it's mustard see
- 22:54Speaker 2: beginning dot com.
- 22:55Speaker 1: So check that out if you want to see some
- 22:56Speaker 1: of these pictures along the way. So you do your staining,
- 23:00Speaker 1: did you even remotely run into uh?
- 23:03Speaker 3: Oh?
- 23:04Speaker 1: I stained myself into a corner?
- 23:06Speaker 2: No, I didn't, but I do have to say we
- 23:08Speaker 2: did have one bad thing that happened, so I oh, I.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Love bad things. Lay it on me out.
- 23:14Speaker 2: So when you're standing floors, it's really difficult, especially with
- 23:17Speaker 2: this flour, it's really difficult to see to make sure
- 23:20Speaker 2: like all of our heavier grit sandpaper that we had
- 23:23Speaker 2: to use to get all that floor off or the
- 23:27Speaker 2: factory finish off didn't still leave those sanding marks. Sure, sure, sure,
- 23:32Speaker 2: So I standed an entire room. It looked great. Backed
- 23:37Speaker 2: up when we came back the next day again we're
- 23:38Speaker 2: living in the basement, went downstairs, came back the next
- 23:40Speaker 2: day after it was dry, and realized that there were
- 23:43Speaker 2: some vertical like things going against the grain in a
- 23:46Speaker 2: diagonal after you stained it, after we stained it, So
- 23:50Speaker 2: we have to go back and rent the drum sander
- 23:52Speaker 2: again to do it. We took all the stain off.
- 23:55Speaker 2: That was a very sad day.
- 23:57Speaker 1: That's a bummer.
- 23:58Speaker 2: That was a big bummer. It took us, you know,
- 24:01Speaker 2: a few days and set us back a little bit.
- 24:03Speaker 2: And yeah, I definitely cried.
- 24:05Speaker 1: I was gonna just ask where there tiers. There were tears. Tears. Yeah,
- 24:09Speaker 1: so little drama along the way, just a little bit.
- 24:12Speaker 1: So you got that stain on after.
- 24:13Speaker 2: That, After that we did it again. Yeah, and it
- 24:16Speaker 2: was wonderful. One after that it was perfect, looks great.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Yeah, and then you get to the finish. What did
- 24:20Speaker 1: you pick again, Finisher's Touch.
- 24:22Speaker 2: We did Finisher's Touch in a oil based mat. So
- 24:27Speaker 2: the reason we got away with using an oil base.
- 24:29Speaker 2: Usually it would yellow overtime, but because we chose walnut,
- 24:31Speaker 2: it's a darker stain, oil base gave us a harder finish.
- 24:35Speaker 2: We have a Bernie's Mountain Dog, we have three boys,
- 24:37Speaker 2: and you know, lots of traffic in and now the house,
- 24:39Speaker 2: so I really wanted to make sure that I had
- 24:41Speaker 2: something durable and oil base was the way to go.
- 24:43Speaker 2: It's very stinky.
- 24:44Speaker 1: Yeah, not gonna lie, Nope, there is that. You gotta
- 24:47Speaker 1: get those windows open.
- 24:48Speaker 2: We had all the windows open, the kids went away
- 24:50Speaker 2: for a few days, and yeah, we did three different
- 24:53Speaker 2: coats lightly standing in between, and it was a process,
- 24:57Speaker 2: it was, it was a lot.
- 24:58Speaker 1: So you went with a mat we did, how come
- 25:01Speaker 1: not a satin sheen.
- 25:03Speaker 2: I didn't want any sort of shininess on my floor.
- 25:07Speaker 2: I wanted it completely, Matt.
- 25:08Speaker 1: It's one of those tricks, or one of those things,
- 25:10Speaker 1: you know. I think it's becoming more and more of
- 25:13Speaker 1: a thing, is to have that matte finish, even the finish,
- 25:15Speaker 1: the factory finishes are coming out with a mat, which
- 25:18Speaker 1: is you know, it seems strange at the beginning when
- 25:21Speaker 1: we made that shift, but they've got the finish to
- 25:23Speaker 1: the point where it's really durable. Even though it's a mate.
- 25:25Speaker 1: It's just like paint on your wall. A mat on
- 25:27Speaker 1: the wall is not going to hold up, wash up
- 25:30Speaker 1: quite as well as the next sheen. But you've always
- 25:32Speaker 1: got to make that determiner where I go with this
- 25:35Speaker 1: and how shiny can I tolerate? And the satin sheine
- 25:38Speaker 1: is going to give you a fair amount of shine,
- 25:40Speaker 1: so I know, and it's one.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Of those things like on my floors, I want, Matt,
- 25:43Speaker 2: but I am all good on satin on the walls.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Oh, so you like satin.
- 25:46Speaker 2: I do like satin on the walls.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Well, you went with the flat on the floor, the
- 25:50Speaker 1: mat on the floor, the oil based product. You said,
- 25:53Speaker 1: it's not, you know, it naturally yellows just a little bit,
- 25:56Speaker 1: and in some instances that can be you know, that
- 25:59Speaker 1: can be a negative. You know, it depends on the
- 26:01Speaker 1: color of the stain. It does, but with a darker stain,
- 26:03Speaker 1: you know, and honestly, with a lot of different stains
- 26:06Speaker 1: it depends, I guess on the color. But the deepening
- 26:08Speaker 1: of it, that ambering of it, really gives a very rich,
- 26:11Speaker 1: beautiful look over time. Okay, so that yellowing isn't always
- 26:15Speaker 1: a negative. You know, it can be if you're trying
- 26:17Speaker 1: to touch things up, but with a stain, you're not
- 26:19Speaker 1: doing a lot of that.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think I was a little more hyper
- 26:21Speaker 2: sensitive to that only because the factory finished floor had
- 26:24Speaker 2: yellowed a lot.
- 26:26Speaker 1: Was it a darker color It was not.
- 26:28Speaker 2: No, So it was almost like a I want to say,
- 26:30Speaker 2: it was almost like.
- 26:30Speaker 1: A natural that's where it shows up.
- 26:33Speaker 2: And then it was very like some spots, you know,
- 26:35Speaker 2: it was more natural. And then it was really darkly yellow.
- 26:38Speaker 2: It kind of looked a little dirty, just like I said,
- 26:40Speaker 2: it was tired overwear, and so I was like, anything
- 26:43Speaker 2: not to yellow. Don't want anything yellowing.
- 26:45Speaker 1: No, if you're looking for you know, if you had
- 26:47Speaker 1: a natural color on the floor and you're going to
- 26:50Speaker 1: clearcoat that, you know, honestly, your best bet would be
- 26:53Speaker 1: to go to a water based yeah, varnish at that point,
- 26:56Speaker 1: and the water based technology for varnishes, we've got one
- 27:00Speaker 1: that will hold up just as well as that oil
- 27:03Speaker 1: base will. It takes probably one extra coat. It doesn't
- 27:05Speaker 1: build as quickly. Okay, so one extra coat, but it
- 27:08Speaker 1: won't yellow. So that's what you get with that.
- 27:10Speaker 2: Really nice if.
- 27:10Speaker 1: You've got a darker stain. You know, whenever I do
- 27:13Speaker 1: anything like this, if I've got a darker stain, I
- 27:15Speaker 1: always go with the oil for the application, you know,
- 27:17Speaker 1: I just I like the application of the oil a
- 27:19Speaker 1: little bitter.
- 27:20Speaker 2: It kind of smooths itself out. We applied it with
- 27:22Speaker 2: a big brush and you know, you're like a little
- 27:25Speaker 2: worried at first, like is this going to you know,
- 27:26Speaker 2: you see your brush marks and then it just all
- 27:28Speaker 2: kind of self levels, which is nice.
- 27:30Speaker 1: Now. Yeah, I like the leveling and I like that
- 27:33Speaker 1: yellowing a little bit when I've got a darker color.
- 27:35Speaker 1: If I've got something natural, definitely want to keep that
- 27:38Speaker 1: in mind. So application, you mentioned it a little bit.
- 27:42Speaker 1: You applied it just with a big brush, did you
- 27:44Speaker 1: the big brush else that you'd use? No, great big
- 27:46Speaker 1: brush sat on the floor and.
- 27:47Speaker 2: Yeap sat on the floor, brushed it all out. We
- 27:50Speaker 2: thought about doing, you know, like a roller, but really
- 27:53Speaker 2: I wanted to make sure that our coats were quite thick,
- 27:57Speaker 2: and yeah, just to have more control over the application.
- 28:00Speaker 1: All right, So how long did that take you to
- 28:02Speaker 1: get around?
- 28:02Speaker 2: There are forever.
- 28:05Speaker 1: There are tricks that you can use and employ to
- 28:08Speaker 1: maybe speed that along a little bit.
- 28:10Speaker 2: I went to the chiropractor a few times.
- 28:12Speaker 1: That I did. Wow, So this this floor has taken it.
- 28:15Speaker 1: It has on you.
- 28:17Speaker 2: It really has mentally and physically. And I'm just kidding.
- 28:20Speaker 1: So about how long did the whole process takes?
- 28:22Speaker 2: Oh gosh, over a month?
- 28:24Speaker 1: Over a month. That's really not that bad.
- 28:25Speaker 2: It seems awful only because I'm living in the base.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Yes, it seems like it went pretty nice.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Yeah, except for we're living there. Like I said, like
- 28:36Speaker 2: the first time we did this in our old house.
- 28:39Speaker 2: We were young, we were newly married, and we didn't
- 28:41Speaker 2: live there yet. We bought the house and we did
- 28:43Speaker 2: the flooring before we moved in, and so I just was,
- 28:47Speaker 2: I don't know. I had the skewed perspective that it
- 28:49Speaker 2: was going to be super wonderful, and it is wonderful.
- 28:52Speaker 2: The end outcome is worth it. But living with kids
- 28:56Speaker 2: and your animals in a house while you're redoing the
- 28:59Speaker 2: main area of of the flooring, like you, he had to,
- 29:02Speaker 2: like I said, go through the window. It's just is
- 29:04Speaker 2: so disruptive, way more than I anticipated. And I'm a
- 29:08Speaker 2: bit of optimistic too, so I usually look at things
- 29:12Speaker 2: in like a very positive perspective. But I think I
- 29:15Speaker 2: should have probably been a little more pessimistic about this project.
- 29:18Speaker 1: I'm almost one hundred pessimistic. So I never started a project. Yeah,
- 29:23Speaker 1: but I need a balance. You need a balance as well. Yeah,
- 29:26Speaker 1: and then we'll be fully functioning from an adult. Yes.
- 29:30Speaker 1: So Bernie's mountain.
- 29:31Speaker 2: Dog, Yeah right, Bernie names Maverick.
- 29:33Speaker 1: Bernie's mountain dog named Maverick. How Shaggy is a Bernie's
- 29:37Speaker 1: mountain dog.
- 29:38Speaker 2: They're quite harry.
- 29:39Speaker 1: How did that play out with the oil based taking
- 29:41Speaker 1: so much longer to dry. Did you end up with care?
- 29:45Speaker 2: I did not finish, thankfully.
- 29:46Speaker 1: You should check it out, get on the floor and
- 29:48Speaker 1: look like, oh I did Okay, I have yes, so
- 29:52Speaker 1: you survived that.
- 29:53Speaker 2: I did, yeah, somehow, and we again left him in
- 29:56Speaker 2: the basement. Yeah, and so you know we had fans going.
- 29:59Speaker 2: The window were open.
- 30:01Speaker 1: I don't know in the right season, so you can
- 30:03Speaker 1: get those windows over.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Yes, and that's why we wanted to do it in
- 30:06Speaker 2: the spring, which ended up being the summer.
- 30:08Speaker 1: But yeah, it shakes out that way. So knowing what
- 30:10Speaker 1: you know now, would you undertake this project again? Would
- 30:15Speaker 1: you recommend it to others? Would you hire it out?
- 30:17Speaker 1: How would you handle it?
- 30:18Speaker 2: You know, in the middle of it, we're like, we
- 30:20Speaker 2: should have hired this out. But thinking about how much
- 30:23Speaker 2: money we saved because we did quote it out to
- 30:25Speaker 2: how much it would be.
- 30:26Speaker 1: How much do you think you saved? People will be
- 30:28Speaker 1: very curious.
- 30:29Speaker 2: About that eight thousand dollars.
- 30:30Speaker 1: Oh, I'll see that. You can suffer through a lot
- 30:32Speaker 1: of things for eight thousand. Yep.
- 30:34Speaker 2: I just kept telling them I'm saving eight thousand dollars.
- 30:36Speaker 1: That's three weeks out the groceries.
- 30:38Speaker 2: Yeah, look at that or more eight thousand dollars.
- 30:43Speaker 1: Would you recommend it to other people? You know?
- 30:46Speaker 2: I would. I feel like, if you are optimistic and
- 30:50Speaker 2: you are able to put in some grit, then you
- 30:55Speaker 2: could do it. But be I would say move out.
- 30:58Speaker 2: I wouldn't live there again. If I had had my
- 31:00Speaker 2: all my ducks in a row, we would have just
- 31:02Speaker 2: moved out. It wasn't in the cards.
- 31:03Speaker 1: And where would you have for a month.
- 31:05Speaker 2: We would have just, I don't know, got a hotel.
- 31:07Speaker 2: That's the thing. We don't have family around, so it's
- 31:09Speaker 2: not like we could just go live with you know,
- 31:12Speaker 2: in laws or Sneak and Susie down the road, you know.
- 31:17Speaker 2: But yeah, I probably I definitely would have probably moved
- 31:19Speaker 2: out even during the like Polly stage to the hotel.
- 31:24Speaker 2: But again, well yeah, but then we have pets. So
- 31:26Speaker 2: it's like it's so multifaceted that you can't just it's
- 31:29Speaker 2: it's not an easy thing to do.
- 31:31Speaker 1: No, I think it just comes back to eight thousand dollars.
- 31:35Speaker 2: I know, you could suffer through a lot, like you said,
- 31:37Speaker 2: for eight thousand dollars, and yeah, that was a lot,
- 31:39Speaker 2: but they would get it done in three days and
- 31:41Speaker 2: so We did go back and forth and we decided,
- 31:43Speaker 2: you know what, we're going to do it and if
- 31:45Speaker 2: this really sucks, then we're just gonna suck it up
- 31:48Speaker 2: and hire it out and it'll be okay. At least
- 31:50Speaker 2: we tried.
- 31:51Speaker 1: You love the end result.
- 31:52Speaker 2: Oh yeah, it's perfect. I would do it again. I
- 31:55Speaker 2: would suffer through again.
- 31:56Speaker 1: So what's next on Alley's list of things to do
- 31:59Speaker 1: at your home?
- 31:59Speaker 2: Well, right now I'm painting, go figure, I'm painting up
- 32:04Speaker 2: our stairs. We are going to be doing our office.
- 32:07Speaker 2: So when we did the floors, we had there was
- 32:09Speaker 2: all built ins in the office, so we ripped all
- 32:11Speaker 2: of that out. Now there's some holes in the wall
- 32:13Speaker 2: that we got a patch. We're going to do bookshelves
- 32:15Speaker 2: and make it like a little library. So that's going
- 32:18Speaker 2: to be like a winter project.
- 32:20Speaker 1: All right, Well, I think when you do that and
- 32:22Speaker 1: accomplish that, check back in.
- 32:24Speaker 2: Yeah sounds good projects. Do you have any tools that
- 32:27Speaker 2: I could use that make it really really easily.
- 32:29Speaker 1: Wait until you're done, and that tell.
- 32:31Speaker 2: Me all your secrets, and then.
- 32:32Speaker 1: I'll let you know what you could have done easier.
- 32:34Speaker 2: There you go, that's my way.
- 32:35Speaker 1: It's a position of power.
- 32:37Speaker 2: But Yeah, that's what it is.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Makes me feel important. If people want to see we
- 32:40Speaker 1: already gave it out, but give it out one more time.
- 32:42Speaker 1: If people want to see photos, videos, any of that stuff,
- 32:45Speaker 1: We're to mind you.
- 32:45Speaker 2: Mustard Sebeginning dot com, mustard Seed Beginning on Instagram and
- 32:49Speaker 2: on Facebook.
- 32:50Speaker 1: All right, Allie Bride from Mustard Seed Beginnings, thanks for
- 32:52Speaker 1: being here.
- 32:53Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for having me.
- 32:54Speaker 1: All Right, We're going to take a break and when
- 32:56Speaker 1: we come back, we're talking about painting vinyl floors. Is
- 32:59Speaker 1: that something you want to do? Is that something you
- 33:01Speaker 1: should do? We'll get to all of that in just
- 33:02Speaker 1: a little bit. Stick herround. You're listening to a special
- 33:12Speaker 1: best of episode of the Repolite Home Improvement Show sponsored
- 33:15Speaker 1: by Benjamin Moore. Well, Hayley, let's talk about something that
- 33:18Speaker 1: you've seen over and over on Pinterest, Instagram, basically social media.
- 33:24Speaker 1: Painted vinyl flooring.
- 33:26Speaker 3: Exactly the vinyl or like the old linoium floors. My
- 33:30Speaker 3: grandma still has old linoium floors that have been there
- 33:33Speaker 3: for I don't know how long. It's been the same
- 33:35Speaker 3: the entire time I've known.
- 33:37Speaker 2: Her, and it's held up really well.
- 33:39Speaker 3: But if I moved into that house, I would think
- 33:41Speaker 3: I would like to change this, and I don't necessarily
- 33:44Speaker 3: have the budget to do that.
- 33:45Speaker 2: And I think a lot of people are in that situation.
- 33:48Speaker 1: Right And that's what we're seeing. We're seeing these posts
- 33:50Speaker 1: on Instagram or whatever where people are making that jump
- 33:53Speaker 1: for budget reasons, exactly the reason we're talking about it,
- 33:57Speaker 1: because right now, I would lessly say I've not had
- 34:00Speaker 1: a lot of questions about this. We are seeing more
- 34:03Speaker 1: and more of it on these social media platforms. So
- 34:05Speaker 1: we're addressing it for that reason, but largely because when
- 34:09Speaker 1: you see something on social media, and we all do.
- 34:11Speaker 1: We all see all these different projects and we see
- 34:14Speaker 1: the finished results, and a lot of the times we
- 34:17Speaker 1: do see the work involved. What we rarely see are
- 34:21Speaker 1: the year after I did this? What does it look
- 34:24Speaker 1: like a year later? And we've always got to remember
- 34:27Speaker 1: that when we're seeing these photos of these spaces, these
- 34:30Speaker 1: are very very staged. Yeah, now that doesn't mean that
- 34:32Speaker 1: not false life necessarily, it's really set up to make
- 34:35Speaker 1: a great photo. So you see all these floors painted,
- 34:39Speaker 1: and sometimes we tend to get the idea that let's
- 34:41Speaker 1: jump into that project. It's a great way to go,
- 34:43Speaker 1: that's going to fix my problem. I got this. It
- 34:45Speaker 1: can look really nice, right, I got a floor that
- 34:47Speaker 1: I don't have a budget to replace. I hate the colors.
- 34:50Speaker 1: I'm going to do this and that will work.
- 34:52Speaker 2: Yeah, But what we.
- 34:53Speaker 1: Want to highlight here in this little bit that we've
- 34:55Speaker 1: got is that there are limitations, and if you understand
- 34:59Speaker 1: those limitations and set your expectations at the correct level,
- 35:02Speaker 1: right exactly, you're gonna be fine. You're not gonna be disappointed,
- 35:06Speaker 1: But you could be disappointed if you're basing everything on
- 35:08Speaker 1: these immaculate photos that you're seeing.
- 35:11Speaker 3: Yeah, this is not a permanent fix, right, it's a
- 35:14Speaker 3: fixed flour Now, it's a fix because you don't have
- 35:16Speaker 3: the budget to replace floors, and you're saving up so
- 35:19Speaker 3: that you can do that soon. This paint is not
- 35:21Speaker 3: really meant for this type of flooring. It's meant for
- 35:24Speaker 3: wood and concrete. And yes, we can paint this floor
- 35:27Speaker 3: with the right prep, but it's still not going to
- 35:29Speaker 3: hold up the same as if we had painted wood
- 35:32Speaker 3: or concrete.
- 35:32Speaker 1: Right, it's not gonna, by all means not going to
- 35:34Speaker 1: hold up as well as the vinyl wood uncoded, right,
- 35:37Speaker 1: Just the original vinyl will hold up way better. If
- 35:39Speaker 1: you can tolerate the look, and that's what we'd recommend.
- 35:41Speaker 1: If you can tolerate the look, you're probably better off.
- 35:44Speaker 1: You're gonna have less maintenance. If you cannot tolerate the look,
- 35:47Speaker 1: the color, whatever. If it's really dragging you down, there
- 35:50Speaker 1: is a fix. The big thing you've got to do
- 35:52Speaker 1: is make sure the floor is really really clean.
- 35:54Speaker 3: Yeah, I would use a TSP substitute. It'll dull the
- 35:57Speaker 3: finish a little bit. And we should clarify too that
- 36:00Speaker 3: and we're talking about painting these floors. Hopefully it's not
- 36:02Speaker 3: a brand new vinyl or linoleum that's down because there's
- 36:06Speaker 3: a lot of were coats that they have on there
- 36:08Speaker 3: that's going to prevent anything from sticking to it. We're
- 36:11Speaker 3: talking about worn out floors that need a facelift, right, So.
- 36:15Speaker 1: Wash it really well. We'd recommend using a Scotch bright
- 36:17Speaker 1: pad when those little green scrubbies. That will definitely help
- 36:21Speaker 1: create a little bit of profile in that surface to
- 36:23Speaker 1: give the paint something to bite into exactly. And once
- 36:26Speaker 1: you've got that washed really well, and man, that's important,
- 36:29Speaker 1: think about all the things that your floors. Yeah, probably seeation.
- 36:32Speaker 3: In bathroom floors feel bad for them.
- 36:35Speaker 1: Oh man, I can only imagine what they've been a
- 36:37Speaker 1: part of. But you want to make sure you get
- 36:39Speaker 1: as much of that off as possible and then let
- 36:42Speaker 1: it dry really well. Anytime you're doing paint prep, it's
- 36:45Speaker 1: got to be clean, dull, and dry, and then you
- 36:47Speaker 1: go to your finished paint. There's no primer really to use.
- 36:50Speaker 1: We'd recommend Benjamin Moore's Portion floor It's available in a
- 36:53Speaker 1: water based and an oil based version.
- 36:55Speaker 3: Yeah, the water base is going to be a low luster,
- 36:58Speaker 3: and I think I would prefer that look personally, just
- 37:00Speaker 3: because it's going to show a little bit less of
- 37:02Speaker 3: the texture from that flooring because it will have some
- 37:06Speaker 3: kind of you know, stamp texture imprint, and that's going
- 37:09Speaker 3: to show up a lot more once it's just a
- 37:10Speaker 3: solid color. Yeah, So the less gene there the better
- 37:13Speaker 3: for that reason. But there is the oil option, which
- 37:16Speaker 3: is a high gloss.
- 37:17Speaker 1: Right now, if there are seams in the flooring, that
- 37:20Speaker 1: also is gonna definitely pop when you put a solid
- 37:23Speaker 1: color on it. You're going to see those seams. A
- 37:25Speaker 1: lot of the times they get hidden in the patterns,
- 37:27Speaker 1: they will become more apparent. Now in talking about all
- 37:30Speaker 1: of this, I want to still make sure we go
- 37:32Speaker 1: back and stress the fact that this is not one
- 37:35Speaker 1: of those ideal long term projects. This is a short
- 37:38Speaker 1: term fix.
- 37:39Speaker 2: Is a superficial thing, very very superficial.
- 37:42Speaker 1: It's a band aid. Think about it that way. You
- 37:44Speaker 1: are going to wear through it. You are going to
- 37:47Speaker 1: notice where patterns at pivot points and things in front
- 37:49Speaker 1: of the sink, by the refrigerator.
- 37:51Speaker 3: Where you cut things right, especially where you cut things, yeah,
- 37:54Speaker 3: like chop things up.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Oh not like you lay on the floor and chop
- 37:57Speaker 1: up the tomatoes. For a second when you stamp. I
- 38:00Speaker 1: was thinking, Wow, what kind of home is this that
- 38:03Speaker 1: Hayley comes from? Really a lot? Yeah, but like at
- 38:07Speaker 1: my house to be in front of the refrigerator, that's
- 38:09Speaker 1: where the kids spend their time. Sure, you're going to
- 38:12Speaker 1: see all of that. You're going to have to touch
- 38:14Speaker 1: it up. You're going to have to repair it from
- 38:15Speaker 1: time to time.
- 38:16Speaker 2: I remember that too.
- 38:17Speaker 3: When you decide to put you know, that first coat down,
- 38:19Speaker 3: and maybe you go back over it with a stencil pattern,
- 38:23Speaker 3: you're gonna have to do touch up. If you have
- 38:25Speaker 3: a pattern down, make sure you keep that stencil because
- 38:28Speaker 3: you might need to do some serious tedious touch up.
- 38:31Speaker 1: Right, because you have seen a fair amount of stenciling
- 38:33Speaker 1: and that is a nicer look.
- 38:35Speaker 2: Yeah it looks like a tile then, but.
- 38:36Speaker 1: It definitely creates a little more intricacy with the maintenance
- 38:41Speaker 1: that will occur. Right. This is one of those projects
- 38:43Speaker 1: that you can do. It will just get you, you know,
- 38:47Speaker 1: a couple of years or yeah, who knows what. It
- 38:49Speaker 1: depends on the traffic of the room. You can't really predict.
- 38:51Speaker 1: It depends on your prep work and all of that.
- 38:54Speaker 1: It's not permanent, but it is something you can do
- 38:56Speaker 1: if you need to adjust the color to get you
- 38:59Speaker 1: another couple of years. If you have any questions, you
- 39:01Speaker 1: can stop out at any Repkolid your Port City paints.
