- 0:00Welcome to the One Small Change. I am thrilled that you're here with me
- 0:03today on this journey of exploration, transformation. I'm your
- 0:07host, Yvonne McCoy, and I bring almost 30 years of
- 0:11entrepreneurial experience, and I have a passion for discovering
- 0:14growth through the power of seemingly small change. And every
- 0:18week, I try to, you know, bring into your world somebody who's got
- 0:22an amazing story, and they're going to share how
- 0:26a small, unexpected, or insignificant
- 0:29decision sparked a remarkable transformation and growth in
- 0:33their personal or professional life. And this week
- 0:37we have Danielle Stephens. Danielle, thank you for giving us some of
- 0:41your time today. Yeah, no, I really appreciate it, and I'm glad
- 0:44to be here. So this is not the first time we've talked,
- 0:49and I want you to tell everybody what it is that you do,
- 0:52because I think they're going to be amazed and how you got to
- 0:56do what you do. Awesome. So I am an accessibility
- 1:00tester consultant, and I
- 1:04have been a independent contractor for the past
- 1:08three years for a program, a
- 1:12company called Make It Fable Technologies. And they hire people
- 1:16with disabilities, like myself to help
- 1:21different help companies to make their products,
- 1:24insert products and websites accessible for people
- 1:28with disabilities. And you have an amazing
- 1:32statistic. So I want to say this up front and at the beginning of
- 1:36this so people know how important this is.
- 1:39Yeah. So the statistic is that
- 1:43there are 15 million people in the United States that are blind and
- 1:47visually impaired. However,
- 1:50those. That's not the statistic that is, like the
- 1:54most jarring, but the one that is the most jarring
- 1:58to me is that there are millions of websites that are out
- 2:02there. Of the millions of websites that are
- 2:05out here today, that
- 2:09only 3% of them,
- 2:123% are fully accessible
- 2:16for a person like me, which means that 96%
- 2:20of them are either partially
- 2:23accessible or in some cases,
- 2:27not accessible at all.
- 2:31And I think one of the things you said to me and one of the
- 2:33things that I thought was so important, it said, not only are you leaving
- 2:37money on the table, but you're really leaving people on the table as well.
- 2:41Yes. I think that is so important to know. But I was.
- 2:45When you first said this, I was totally blown away, because
- 2:49this is a problem that entrepreneurs have that
- 2:53they don't know that they have. And I think
- 2:56when they hear this, they will be amazed at
- 3:01some of the things that they can do that can
- 3:04correct some of these, because that's a lot. I mean,
- 3:08you know, 96% are not accessible.
- 3:12The market itself is millions. We're. We're.
- 3:16We're leaving A lot on the table. Yeah.
- 3:19Yes. So tell us how you got where you are
- 3:23so that you are working in this area. So
- 3:27I've always been interested in tech ever since I was in high
- 3:30school, and I threw some
- 3:34coaching and. And some influence
- 3:38through teachers and other things, other people in my life.
- 3:42I decided after I got out of college
- 3:46that it was Covid, and I didn't want to, like,
- 3:50go into anybody's office or anything like that. And I.
- 3:54I wanted to really help. Right. I. I was able
- 3:58to. Thanks to the power of zoom and
- 4:03cell phones, I was able to meet with a bunch of people, different
- 4:07entrepreneurs. And one of the things that
- 4:10I was. I was given a challenge by
- 4:14one of them, and they told me, they said, hey, you need to create
- 4:17some type, of course, or go in the business for yourself to help
- 4:22entrepreneurs. And that's kind of what
- 4:26sparked it all. And I. I just.
- 4:29I. I've really.
- 4:34I've really grown, right, by
- 4:38doing all the things that I'm doing, being on podcast
- 4:42and networking and connecting
- 4:45with so many people like yourself and others.
- 4:49And now I am about
- 4:53to launch my program here in the next
- 4:58six months. And that's. And I only did that
- 5:01because I've only invested in
- 5:05myself, right. Because I know that it's not only
- 5:09a market that is. It's a
- 5:13market that is much needed, but also that
- 5:16by being able to connect with people like myself,
- 5:20you're going to be able to increase your profits and grow your customer
- 5:24base. Absolutely. And so I want to kind of go back
- 5:28to what I said. We. It. It's a
- 5:31problem. Guys, I got a dog. The doorbell
- 5:35rang. We're live. I don't know how much you're hearing of this.
- 5:39I want to go back to what we don't
- 5:43know.
- 5:43Oh,
- 5:49all right. I hope that's it. No, it's not. I want to go back to
- 5:52what we were talking about, that this is a problem that entrepreneurs don't know that
- 5:56they have. And you may have only been
- 5:59experienced this when you had a parent that couldn't read something on a
- 6:03website because they were older. I had a friend who
- 6:06told me that, and I noticed it for
- 6:10myself that when the print is gray, sometimes I have trouble
- 6:14reading it, you know, and there are lots of other ways
- 6:17that it shows up. So can you talk about some of the
- 6:21ways that people have trouble interacting with the
- 6:24websites and things that we take for granted? I guess,
- 6:28yes. And it's not just the websites. It's. It's other things,
- 6:32too. But I'm glad You mentioned that, because that actually leads
- 6:36me into my gift that everybody's going to be getting,
- 6:40which is it's not only my top 10
- 6:44AI tools, but this gift really
- 6:49enables you to kind of get
- 6:52a glimpse into the world of
- 6:57digital accessibility and AI from my
- 7:00perspective. And so within this gift, one
- 7:04of the tips that I put, put in there was
- 7:09the fact that using AI bots,
- 7:12AI chatbots to
- 7:16help your customers and clients
- 7:20to be able to get to know you, right? Where they can.
- 7:24Instead of maybe they don't want to write an email, right? But
- 7:28guess what? They can go on your website and interact with your
- 7:31chatbot and ask them, ask it
- 7:34questions about what you
- 7:38do and who you serve and about your programs,
- 7:42right? Also, you can
- 7:46use different AIs like ChatGPT,
- 7:51Claude
- 7:54Otter AI. And you can actually take the,
- 7:59take your, you can
- 8:02take your, your,
- 8:06your audio podcasts,
- 8:10right? And you can take them and you can
- 8:14put them in these AIs and they will
- 8:18literally transcribe them into text for you,
- 8:22right? So that somebody like myself or somebody who
- 8:26has a ADHD
- 8:30can be able to, to read them and
- 8:34to be able to, to enjoy them, right? For people who don't
- 8:37like audio, well, they can get a
- 8:41summary of whatever you,
- 8:45whatever your video is that you might
- 8:49have on your website. You can put a transcript there. And guess what?
- 8:53All you have to do is ask AI to create a
- 8:56transcript from your video and you
- 9:00can add it at the bottom, which is something that
- 9:04I noticed that when web, when people have webinars that are on
- 9:08demand, they forget to, they always remember
- 9:11to do the captions, but they forget to put a transcript up the
- 9:15bottom so the people like myself can follow along.
- 9:19So this is something that I want to highlight that you're talking
- 9:22about. So a lot of the things that you're suggesting
- 9:26that people do are not just for people with
- 9:29disabilities, but people with different learning styles. Yes.
- 9:34You know, so for instance, you know, if you are a
- 9:37visual learner, you typically don't like listening to things.
- 9:41You would prefer to read it rather than listen to it.
- 9:45If you are an audio person, you would typically prefer to
- 9:49hear it when then read it. And so even, you know, even
- 9:53your regular customers are going to benefit for some of the
- 9:56changes that you would put on your website. And you know, like
- 10:00I said, I'm getting older. I know, for instance, you know,
- 10:04I can take things and just make it bigger on my screen,
- 10:07you know, if I'm in the chat box or whatever. So I can, you know,
- 10:11it's Easier for me to use or whatever. But that wasn't the
- 10:14only thing that we talked about. We, we also talked about,
- 10:18what's it called? Chat. Yeah, Chatbots. And
- 10:22like. Oh, captcha. So, yeah, so the, these
- 10:26little captures that you see all around, whether it's on your
- 10:29apps, your websites, whatever it might be.
- 10:33One of the things that is really important is that
- 10:37you not only have an image for the people that can see,
- 10:41but also that you have an audio captcha so
- 10:44that somebody like myself is able to
- 10:48register for your event or,
- 10:52or subscribe to your email address, to your email list
- 10:56without any barriers. And so
- 11:00I can either listen to it. Like they
- 11:04have a way that you can play. You can,
- 11:08it'll. It'll. You can play it. Or if you want to just
- 11:12put like a text or maybe
- 11:16numbers or whatever that the person has to
- 11:19enter right into a text box instead
- 11:23of just an image. That is something that is such
- 11:27so helpful because I, I know that I
- 11:31actually didn't sign up for someone's accelerator
- 11:35because of the captcha. Everything else was fine, but
- 11:39when I got to the captcha, I couldn't. It was
- 11:42not accessible. So I have to tell you, I hate
- 11:46them. I hate to find which one has a crosswalk,
- 11:50find which one has a bicycle, find which one has a motorcycle.
- 11:54Right. Because the pictures are so weird. I think.
- 11:58So I could see how that could help, you know, not not only people
- 12:02who are visually impaired, but just people who have, you know, have short
- 12:05attention spans. Exactly. Like me. I mean, it's like,
- 12:09you know, if I miss one, am I going to have to do it again?
- 12:12Am I? You know, so y. And I know the
- 12:16other thing we talked about was a statement that people
- 12:20can put on their website. Yeah. So it's called an accessibility
- 12:24statement. And a lot of times I haven't really seen
- 12:27it a lot in entrepreneurs websites, but however,
- 12:32they call it an accessibility statement. However,
- 12:35I just say put it in your Contact us. Right.
- 12:39And normally what you can just do is on your Contact us
- 12:43page you can just say for any
- 12:46questions or if you need any assistance, like
- 12:50please write me or email me or call
- 12:54me. Right. Just so that somebody like
- 12:57myself can have a place to know that hey,
- 13:01this person really cares about
- 13:05making about me and what I have to
- 13:09offer. And so. Or
- 13:13you can also do a. Like they have
- 13:16something called they have an access. I've seen people have
- 13:21feedback forms and in this little form it just
- 13:24says it's like an accessibility feedback form. And it. And
- 13:28ask, well, did you. If
- 13:31you have Any accessibility issues, please write
- 13:35them here. Right. So, so that, and,
- 13:39and we will take your suggestions and
- 13:43feedback into consideration. So that's also something that you can
- 13:46do. That's good. That's good.
- 13:51And, and when we talked before, we were talking about, I mean, those were
- 13:55the three big ones that I remembered that I think people can
- 13:59take action on immediately.
- 14:03But you were saying there, you know, part of it has to do with some
- 14:06simple things like fonts. Yeah. So it's
- 14:10like making sure that. So a lot of times these
- 14:14platforms or social media,
- 14:17web, social media websites, they have
- 14:22things already like kind of built into them.
- 14:25Right. Where it's like, hey, you could turn on alt Text
- 14:29on Facebook. Right. And, or you can
- 14:33turn it on on LinkedIn. However, if
- 14:37they're not available already, there are these things
- 14:40called Accessibility Checkers where
- 14:44you can. And some of them are free, some of them do cost.
- 14:48Right. But there are
- 14:51ways that you can put your website into
- 14:55these Accessibility Checkers and it
- 14:59will literally scan your website and let you
- 15:03know if your website is accessible and
- 15:07if it is, how much is it, how much of it
- 15:10isn't accessible. Right. And
- 15:14it'll also give you recommendations
- 15:18on how you can improve it and fix it and make
- 15:22it better. I mean, that's something that I am going to be
- 15:25offering to people, but
- 15:30it's just something that you can do right now because you
- 15:34can go out and search for Accessibility
- 15:37Checker. There's plenty of them. One of them I use is, that is
- 15:41Accessibility Insights. They can call you too,
- 15:45right? Yes, they can.
- 15:49Yes, they can. I have a Contact Us page.
- 15:53I have a. I will, I do have a way
- 15:57to connect with me and
- 16:00my gift, actually. Okay. So we, we definitely want to
- 16:04get the gift. I, I, like I said, I think that this is
- 16:08really important, important issue because it
- 16:11is a problem that we have that we
- 16:15don't know we have. And it is, you know, it is
- 16:19keeping us from a huge market
- 16:23and a huge, you know, you know, a huge
- 16:27group of potential clients that we didn't even know
- 16:31that we were cutting off. And, and so the first time I talked with
- 16:35Danielle, you know, at a networking group,
- 16:39I was like, oh, my God, I never even thought about this. And
- 16:42so I know that, you know, I know that I have had my disability,
- 16:46not disability, my, my own visual and, you
- 16:50know, learning stumbling blocks. So I am
- 16:54aware of that kind of stuff, but never thought of it in terms of
- 16:57my business. The other thing I'm going to ask you,
- 17:01Danielle, is only because I know
- 17:05the story is Tell us why you picked your background.
- 17:09So I picked the background because when I was in
- 17:13high school, I got a chance to attend a program called Protein
- 17:16Crystals in Space. And I'm a huge science buff as well as a tech
- 17:20geek. I nerd out on both of these. And I got
- 17:24a chance to go to Hunville, Alabama,
- 17:28and participate in a program that allowed
- 17:32me and some of my other friends to make
- 17:35protein crystals. And as a result of that, we got
- 17:39to go to the Kennedy Space center here in
- 17:43Florida and actually watch this launch happen
- 17:47where they actually launched into space.
- 17:51And we all got to like to see it happen
- 17:55live. I mean, who would have thought, right, that
- 18:00I was in 11th grade, and
- 18:04it was honestly one of the highlights of
- 18:08my year that year. And I can imagine most of
- 18:11us would love to see a launch and have our project on
- 18:15a space thing. All right, so let me ask you, when was the last time
- 18:18you did something new? For the first time, on Wednesday, I
- 18:22participated in Ponta Palooza. I participated before
- 18:26as a general admission, but I was interviewed
- 18:30on five podcasts, and that
- 18:33was. It was awesome because I got to
- 18:39talk about my. My. What I do
- 18:42and who I serve from five, and I get to.
- 18:46I got to do it with five different people who do
- 18:50all do different things, which means that I got to give
- 18:54five different perspectives of about the same
- 18:58topic. So you. You. You
- 19:01enlighten five different audiences about the problem that they
- 19:05have that they don't know they have. Okay, Exactly. And one of
- 19:09them. One of them is not only going
- 19:12to be a podcast, but it's going to be
- 19:16a part of a book that's.
- 19:20Yeah, it was all about AI, and so
- 19:24I'm gonna be a part of a book as a result of
- 19:27participating in that on that podcast. That's
- 19:31fantastic. All right, before we run out of time, I need to slip in the
- 19:34commercial, and so I hope everybody will take a moment to
- 19:38subscribe, share, and engage in on social media with the
- 19:42podcast. I did it so to help you to supercharge
- 19:45your business and to bring people into your orb that you may
- 19:49not have met to find tips that are going to help you
- 19:54and grow and fuel your quest for growth and impact. So I hope you
- 19:57will continue to. To tune into the one small change
- 20:01and, you know, see where even the smallest shift can
- 20:05yield monumental transformation. And if you haven't done
- 20:08it, you may want to listen to some of the, you know, the one off
- 20:12episodes. The one. The first one that explains why I did what I. Why
- 20:16I decided to do this podcast, but also the
- 20:19ones that are the the quarterly clarity check ins which talk
- 20:23about things to think up with about the upcoming quarters
- 20:27and possible trends. So
- 20:30Danielle, what is, you know the last thing you
- 20:34want to leave our listeners with? So I want to leave you with
- 20:38two things. One is that
- 20:43accessibility,
- 20:46it's not just a box that you check, but it should be
- 20:50at the forefront and the center of your business.
- 20:54And two, if you're not accessible,
- 20:58then you're leaving money and people on the table. And
- 21:02I, I really, really, really want you to get
- 21:06my gift because I don't want to give everything away.
- 21:09But please connect with me. Let's have a
- 21:13virtual coffee chat at the very least so that
- 21:17I can help you to
- 21:21to make your products and services accessible
- 21:25and also so that I can find out more about what
- 21:29you do and who you do it for so that we can
- 21:33collaborate in some form
- 21:36or fashion. And maybe you'll join my program
- 21:40when I, I launch it in the future. But I
- 21:44just really want you to think about
- 21:47access digital accessibility and how you
- 21:51can use it to be more productive
- 21:55and grow your customer base.
- 21:58Sounds good to me. Okay people, remember,
- 22:02change is simple, but it's not always easy. And it requires
- 22:06courage, resilience and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone. If
- 22:10you're not willing to be uncomfortable, you are not growing. And the world
- 22:13is constantly changing. It is moving forward whether you want it to
- 22:17or not. So if you're not moving, if you're not
- 22:20uncomfortable, if you're not growing, you're stagnating, you're falling behind.
- 22:24So I hope you will join me we on the one small change again as
- 22:27we embark on this journey of bold visions and innovative
- 22:31possibilities. And until the next time, I hope you stay
- 22:35very curious. Danielle, thank you for sharing with
- 22:39us. Yeah, it was great. And I hope
- 22:43everybody takes a chance to listen
- 22:47and connect with me. Goodbye everybody.
