- 0:01Speaker 1: Local news now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland. Albertans have voted overwhelmingly to stick with
- 0:10Speaker 2: Canada in a historic referendum held in the province yesterday,
- 0:14Speaker 2: but what it means for Premier Danielle Smith and her
- 0:17Speaker 2: United Conservative Party remains to be seen. Just 24.3% of
- 0:22Speaker 2: voters in that province chose to pursue a formal referendum
- 0:26Speaker 2: on separation on the 10-question ballot. While the results on
- 0:29Speaker 2: the referendum question were decisive, it could also help to
- 0:33Speaker 2: entrench the organized separatist movement in Alberta. Dalhousie University political
- 0:38Speaker 2: scientist Lori Turnbull says when it comes to the other
- 0:40Speaker 2: nine questions on the ballot, the results were much closer.
- 0:44Speaker 2: That's something that Prime Minister Mark Carney will have to
- 0:47Speaker 2: keep a close eye on.
- 0:49Speaker 3: They want more leverage. They want more control over things
- 0:51Speaker 3: like immigration, social policy. And so what is she going
- 0:55Speaker 3: to be able to do with that? I'm not sure
- 0:56Speaker 3: she's going to be able to do anything with that, frankly,
- 0:58Speaker 3: because of the results of Question 10. However, it does
- 1:00Speaker 3: indicate that Alberta, there is a sense that the country
- 1:04Speaker 3: needs to work better for Alberta. And so, yes, Mark
- 1:07Speaker 3: Carney will still have to be attentive to that.
- 1:09Speaker 2: What it means for Danielle Smith's political future remains unclear.
- 1:13Speaker 3: No matter what happened in the referendum last night, her
- 1:16Speaker 3: political leadership won't survive it for very long because it
- 1:19Speaker 3: just rips her party apart, rips it in half. So
- 1:22Speaker 3: we'll see how she survives the next few days.
- 1:24Speaker 2: RNC says an aggressive dog on the loose in Mount
- 1:28Speaker 2: Pearl on the weekend was never located. RNC issued a
- 1:32Speaker 2: warning on Saturday after someone reported that they had been
- 1:35Speaker 2: bitten by a dog roaming in the area of Valley
- 1:38Speaker 2: View Avenue at Park Avenue. Officers conducted a search for
- 1:42Speaker 2: the animal and a drone was sent up to scan
- 1:44Speaker 2: the neighborhood, but it was not found and there were
- 1:47Speaker 2: no further reports or sightings. The victim was treated for
- 1:51Speaker 2: minor injuries. The latest attempt to learn what happened to
- 1:55Speaker 2: pioneering aviator Amelia Earhart 89 years ago has ended without
- 2:01Speaker 2: reaching a solid conclusion. Here's ABC's Jim Ryan.
- 2:05Speaker 1: The evidence was tantalizing. A satellite image showing an airplane-shaped
- 2:08Speaker 1: object in a lagoon on Nicamaroro Island in the South Pacific.
- 2:12Speaker 1: A team of researchers has found it, and it's not
- 2:14Speaker 1: a plane. Instead, we think it's most likely a collection
- 2:17Speaker 1: of debris that accumulated here. On the team's Facebook page,
- 2:21Speaker 1: project director Rick Pettigrew says he still believes that Amelia
- 2:24Speaker 1: Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan ditched their plane in the
- 2:26Speaker 1: ocean in 1937 and survived for a time on Nicamaroro.
- 2:31Speaker 1: The search for evidence continues. Jim Ryan, ABC News.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Convenience stores and lotto machines will be busy again today
- 2:38Speaker 2: with the $ 90 million lotto max on the line once again.
- 2:43Speaker 2: The big jackpot did not go on Friday night, meaning
- 2:46Speaker 2: the maxed out lotto windfall will remain at $ 90 million
- 2:49Speaker 2: until someone matches all the right numbers. There are also
- 2:53Speaker 2: $ 21 million prizes on the line, plus extra chances to
- 2:57Speaker 2: win on the tag and twist. Tickets can be purchased
- 3:00Speaker 2: at any lotto retailer, online at ALC.ca or via the
- 3:05Speaker 2: ALC app. That's your news, I'm Sarah Strickland.
