- 0:01Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett here at the One Leg
- 0:06Speaker 1: Up Network. I'm Alex Garrett, and I will tell you this.
- 0:13Speaker 2: I'm gonna start to bring the words off the page
- 0:17Speaker 2: into this podcast, from my blog to the podcast, meaning
- 0:22Speaker 2: I'm gonna say the words I write and bring it
- 0:25Speaker 2: to life a little bit more. Because I was excited
- 0:29Speaker 2: when I got to import my latest article from one
- 0:31Speaker 2: leg Up Alex dot com One leg Up Alex dot
- 0:34Speaker 2: com on how everyone's trying to champion affordability. Here at
- 0:43Speaker 2: one leg Up Alex word champion Accessibility Exhibit.
- 0:48Speaker 1: A Mayor elect.
- 0:51Speaker 2: This was the press release from November twenty fourth, twenty
- 0:54Speaker 2: twenty five, Mayor elect Zoramum Donnie announces transition committee appointments
- 0:59Speaker 2: to advance his affordability agenda. The Mayor elect appointed more
- 1:03Speaker 2: than four hundred New Yorkers to seventeen transition committees, who
- 1:07Speaker 2: together will provide critical personnel and policy insights in the
- 1:11Speaker 2: incoming administration.
- 1:14Speaker 1: This is what the press LEADUS wrote.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Committees to focus on NYC's urgent challenges including housing prices,
- 1:21Speaker 2: rising childcred care costs, and transportation access, as well as
- 1:25Speaker 2: emergency preparedness and economic development. But here's my question on
- 1:33Speaker 2: the one Look Up Alex pie blog. It was a
- 1:39Speaker 2: few burning questions for Mayor elect Mum Donnie. Should he
- 1:42Speaker 2: come on this podcast?
- 1:43Speaker 1: Would you like to hear him? Would you like to
- 1:46Speaker 1: hear him? Published eleven, twenty nine, twenty five.
- 1:53Speaker 2: I reached out to Meyrill, I wrote, I reached out
- 1:56Speaker 2: to Mayor elect Mum Donnie's office for any thoughts on
- 1:58Speaker 2: making our city more accessible and have not gotten a
- 2:02Speaker 2: response yet. Here at one leg A, Alex, I will
- 2:05Speaker 2: not let this go. I watch the need for a
- 2:07Speaker 2: more accessible NYC every time I wheel around with Gabby
- 2:11Speaker 2: as the struggle as she struggles to navigate on and
- 2:14Speaker 2: off the subways and narrow platforms. I also watch the
- 2:18Speaker 2: need for inaccessible NYC when able bodied people insist on
- 2:23Speaker 2: using the ADA doors in the subway system with no repercussions.
- 2:28Speaker 1: And also also I will add I didn't write this
- 2:32Speaker 1: part yet, but the curb cuts?
- 2:34Speaker 2: How many curb cuts do you find it difficult to
- 2:36Speaker 2: navigate right here in New York? Under your leadership Mary
- 2:44Speaker 2: or elective Mom Donnie? Will you take revenue NYC makes
- 2:47Speaker 2: from your taxing.
- 2:49Speaker 1: And fix curb cuts?
- 2:50Speaker 2: Will you take revenue and invest with businesses to make
- 2:53Speaker 2: their establishments more accessible. Will you even bring about accessibility
- 2:58Speaker 2: through your affordable policies, that affordability.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Policies that you want to implement.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Those are the questions I have to ask the mayor elect.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Should he accept my invitation to be on one leg
- 3:10Speaker 2: Alex podcast.
- 3:15Speaker 1: But but.
- 3:22Speaker 2: I wrote about how back in the spring, Christopher Alvarez
- 3:27Speaker 2: of Able News and of Ascardi.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Alum said, you don't really.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Have mum Donnie did not look like he had a
- 3:33Speaker 2: plan for disabled New Yorkers, and at a black Agenda
- 3:46Speaker 2: Democratic mayoral forum, Alvarez writes, Mam Donnie did not articulate
- 3:51Speaker 2: a specific plan to address disabled New Yorkers, but he
- 3:55Speaker 2: did tell Able News that the current New York City
- 3:57Speaker 2: Mayor Adams mayor New York City Mayor Eric Adams had
- 4:01Speaker 2: promised a specific amount of funding to be allocated for
- 4:05Speaker 2: employment and then combine it into a larger pot. When
- 4:08Speaker 2: you put it in a larger pot, it doesn't have specificity.
- 4:12Speaker 1: It starts to get absorbed elsewhere.
- 4:14Speaker 2: What I commanded a commitment to do, Mum Donnie went
- 4:16Speaker 2: on to share, is make a dedicated funding stream for
- 4:19Speaker 2: kinds of opportunities that we can ensure that it meets
- 4:23Speaker 2: disabled New Yorkers where they need the most and doesn't
- 4:26Speaker 2: get used for the purposes of press release and then
- 4:29Speaker 2: shift it over elsewhere. All of that feels like word
- 4:34Speaker 2: salad that he told able newspaper, because we haven't really
- 4:39Speaker 2: seen a plan for accessibility.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Under a mayor like mum Donnie. In the transition appointments
- 4:48Speaker 1: press release.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Alone, there's not really much about accessibility for people disabilities.
- 4:56Speaker 2: And by the way, according to New York City, eleven
- 4:59Speaker 2: percent of New Yorker are disabled.
- 5:00Speaker 1: That's one million disabled New Yorkers. So in these four
- 5:06Speaker 1: hundred appointments, may elect Mamdani in these.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Dealings for better transportation access. And by the way, I'm
- 5:17Speaker 2: looking right now.
- 5:20Speaker 1: At this committee selection.
- 5:25Speaker 2: A committee on Housing, a Committee on Youth and Education,
- 5:29Speaker 2: a Committee on Transportation, Climate and Infrastructure, a Committee on
- 5:32Speaker 2: Arts and Culture, a Committee on Community Organizing, a Committee
- 5:36Speaker 2: on Community Safety, a Committee economic Development and Workforce Development.
- 5:41Speaker 2: A Committee on an Emergency Response, a Commility on Government Operations,
- 5:46Speaker 2: a committee on Health, a Committee on Immigrant Justice, a
- 5:49Speaker 2: Committee on the Criminal Legal System, a Committee on Legal Affairs,
- 5:53Speaker 2: a Committee on Small Businesses, a Committee on social Services,
- 5:57Speaker 2: a committee on Technology, and a committee on work or Justice.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Nowhere here is there any sign of disabled representation. Disability
- 6:10Speaker 2: representation nowhere here. So Mayor Elect Mumdanni. I see our
- 6:34Speaker 2: friend Tom Harris is actually on one of the committees
- 6:36Speaker 2: for community safety, friend of the Arthur ALV.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Powerer.
- 6:43Speaker 2: But Mayor Elect mum Donnie, where is the representation for
- 6:48Speaker 2: people with disabilities? That is two sightings of democratic Socialism
- 6:52Speaker 2: of America being placed on these committees.
- 6:57Speaker 1: But I'm not seeing people.
- 7:01Speaker 2: With disabilities being represented in any of these community operations
- 7:05Speaker 2: or committees. So why don't we just form a committee
- 7:10Speaker 2: on accessibility? Since you have all these committees going on,
- 7:15Speaker 2: why not a committee on accessibility? And I want to
- 7:21Speaker 2: know how you are going to either maintain change or
- 7:25Speaker 2: do whatever with the current Office of Disabilities in the
- 7:31Speaker 2: New York City offices.
- 7:36Speaker 1: I want to know that because we need to know
- 7:52Speaker 1: if you're.
- 7:57Speaker 2: H if your drive for affordability makes room for accessibility
- 8:08Speaker 2: and accessible New York under mayamum Donnie.
- 8:13Speaker 1: That's what I haven't heard yet.
- 8:15Speaker 2: And so in these four hundred appointments and seventeen committees,
- 8:20Speaker 2: let's make an eighteenth one a committee on accessibility because
- 8:26Speaker 2: you can have an affordable New York, but I want
- 8:29Speaker 2: to safe New York and I want accessible New York.
- 8:33Speaker 2: And I will always make sure through this podcast, through
- 8:36Speaker 2: this YouTube page, through whatever means you're listening us to
- 8:42Speaker 2: to have one leg up for New Yorkers and one
- 8:45Speaker 2: leg up on accessibility.
- 8:49Speaker 1: I'm Alex Garrett
