- 0:00Speaker 1: No from the Star Rentals Sports Test your ninety three
- 0:03Speaker 1: point three kJ R FM sports headline.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Conad of the demon, I'm a demon, Nick Toda, No sobody.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Demon incomparable Andres contour on tele Mondo last night. Yeah,
- 0:59Speaker 3: that was the second minute Malik Timo with the US
- 1:02Speaker 3: down a man and we'll talk a lot about that
- 1:05Speaker 3: low Valligan and what that means going forward. But down
- 1:08Speaker 3: a man, up one nill they get the goal with
- 1:11Speaker 3: a strike that went through the keeper up or left
- 1:13Speaker 3: from Malik Tillman Andre's contour on the Call to Nothing.
- 1:17Speaker 3: The United States bes Bosnia host Corvina. That's only the
- 1:19Speaker 3: second time ever the United States has won a knockout
- 1:22Speaker 3: round match. I know it's knockout rounds is now a
- 1:24Speaker 3: round of thirty two is an extra knockout round in
- 1:26Speaker 3: this expanded forty eighteen World Cup. But the United States
- 1:30Speaker 3: moves on to play Monday against Belgium in Seattle in
- 1:35Speaker 3: the round of sixteen. It's a five pm start. I'll
- 1:37Speaker 3: be there. I'll be in the stadium. I've been for
- 1:39Speaker 3: all the other of the first five. Let's go great,
- 1:42Speaker 3: it's been great.
- 1:42Speaker 4: Oh I'm excited, are you?
- 1:44Speaker 5: I know you're working, but still there's got to be
- 1:46Speaker 5: some excitement there, Jessman.
- 1:47Speaker 3: It it will be the greatest sporting event in Seattle history.
- 1:51Speaker 3: I'm not that's not hyperbole. There'll be hundreds of millions
- 1:54Speaker 3: of people watch. I've been in the stadium for every
- 1:56Speaker 3: one of the NFC Championship Games. This will be better
- 1:59Speaker 3: than that because of the global reach of this. We'll
- 2:03Speaker 3: talk about that during the show too. The Belgians. I
- 2:06Speaker 3: was in the stadium yesterday for that, another sold out
- 2:09Speaker 3: crowd yesterday afternoon for Belgium and Senegal. Senegal absolutely dominated
- 2:13Speaker 3: them for the first eighty five minutes. Then Remelo Locaku scored.
- 2:17Speaker 3: Two minutes later, Captain Yori Tevaman scored even the match,
- 2:21Speaker 3: send it to extra time. And then this happened in
- 2:23Speaker 3: the one hundred and seventeenth minute, and.
- 2:30Speaker 6: Yo, wom holistic hook, call your penalty.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Benetopin in days it falls of on the meds today. Yeah,
- 2:40Speaker 3: we're in the Benetton portion of the show. I love it.
- 2:43Speaker 4: It's what the World Cup is all about.
- 2:45Speaker 3: Is exactly what the world That's what it was like
- 2:47Speaker 3: yesterday in the press box there were Belgians high five
- 2:50Speaker 3: in each.
- 2:51Speaker 4: Other after that, I thank you kind of got I
- 2:53Speaker 4: read that point.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Well, unlike the United States, the press boxes for the
- 2:58Speaker 3: World Cup, they are outright celebrating and cheering and dudes
- 3:02Speaker 3: wearing team gear.
- 3:04Speaker 4: Oh how fun is that?
- 3:05Speaker 3: And then in the mix zone they're wearing team gear
- 3:07Speaker 3: interviewing these guys in high five of them. It's just
- 3:10Speaker 3: it's not anything I'm used to. That was telem As,
- 3:13Speaker 3: the captain of the team. That was another disputed var
- 3:16Speaker 3: intervention that cost Senegal that penalty kick against them in
- 3:21Speaker 3: the one hundred and seventeenth minute, and that's why they're
- 3:24Speaker 3: playing the US on Monday, Warldworld Cup drama. Mighty England
- 3:27Speaker 3: trailed Congo Tiny Congo deep into the second half in Atlanta,
- 3:30Speaker 3: then two goals late by Harry Kane. They probably knighted
- 3:32Speaker 3: him after the game. They rescued the three Lions in
- 3:36Speaker 3: a two to one win. That means England Mexico in
- 3:39Speaker 3: Mexico City Sunday at five pm and Estadios Tech. That's
- 3:42Speaker 3: going to be crazy. This World Cup is really really
- 3:46Speaker 3: something else awesome would have to like soccer, and it's here,
- 3:48Speaker 3: It's right in our backyard.
- 3:50Speaker 5: Yeah, I went out to you know, a local establishment
- 3:53Speaker 5: kind of close to me, with some friends from our
- 3:55Speaker 5: local gym actually, and we watched. I was watching with
- 3:59Speaker 5: football fans watching soccer. It felt like I was watching
- 4:02Speaker 5: a Seahawks game, because you know, that's how our fans are.
- 4:05Speaker 4: Yeah, and it was so fun.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Today Spain and Australia is the early game Croatia at
- 4:09Speaker 3: Port de Gal. I'll be in Vancouver, BC tonight for
- 4:12Speaker 3: Switzerland Algeria, covering that for the News Tribune and bringing
- 4:15Speaker 3: my wife and son. Seeing how Vancouver BC does it.
- 4:18Speaker 3: They have another watch party right downtown. You walk to
- 4:20Speaker 3: the match stadiums right there at VC Place downtown. The
- 4:25Speaker 3: Mariners yet they still playing. They resume and finish their
- 4:27Speaker 3: three game series against the Angels to night the Yard
- 4:29Speaker 3: and Soto six forty Bryce Miller's on the Hill. The
- 4:31Speaker 3: Rangers lost last night, so while the MS took the
- 4:34Speaker 3: day off for the World Cup, they bent back in
- 4:36Speaker 3: first waist so tied with Texas atop the American League West.
- 4:39Speaker 3: The Boston Celtics are reportedly trading former Finals MVP Jalen
- 4:43Speaker 3: Brown to the Philadelphia seventy six Ers. The Sixers are
- 4:46Speaker 3: sending Boston Paul George and shaking your head.
- 4:49Speaker 4: Right inside their division.
- 4:51Speaker 5: I mean I was watching the Sports Enter updates on
- 4:54Speaker 5: that and Brian Windhors is like, why, like he could
- 4:58Speaker 5: not make sense of it.
- 4:59Speaker 3: One became it's not like Jalen Bridge well impact, there's.
- 5:02Speaker 5: A lot of you know, implication that he wanted out regardless,
- 5:04Speaker 5: but you trade him to the Sixers and it didn't
- 5:07Speaker 5: have to happen.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Right now, Yeah, Sixers are getting or Boston's getting Paul
- 5:12Speaker 3: George two first round picks in twenty eight and thirty one,
- 5:15Speaker 3: two second round picks in twenty eight and thirty for
- 5:18Speaker 3: Jalen Brown, the former finals MVP to the Sixers. Now
- 5:22Speaker 3: on with a pack Thursday show man. If you aren't
- 5:25Speaker 3: on board for this World Cup, you don't have to
- 5:28Speaker 3: be a soccer fan. It's this happens like a meteor strike.
- 5:33Speaker 3: Once in a generation or two does the US go
- 5:36Speaker 3: this far in a World Cup and it doesn't happen
- 5:40Speaker 3: in your own backyard. In nineteen ninety four, they got
- 5:42Speaker 3: just swept off and this was not what this is,
- 5:46Speaker 3: which is a build up to the round of sixteen,
- 5:49Speaker 3: and it's never ever been what it is right now,
- 5:52Speaker 3: coming to Seattle and you heard during the broadcast last night.
- 5:55Speaker 3: You heard people talking about it in the press box
- 5:57Speaker 3: yesterday at the Belgium met the United States. The team,
- 6:01Speaker 3: the program, the coaches, the staffers are players are very
- 6:05Speaker 3: much looking forward to the fact they're coming back to Seattle.
- 6:08Speaker 3: I mean it was okay loud in women in the
- 6:11Speaker 3: Levi Stadium in Santa Clara last night, at least coming
- 6:14Speaker 3: through the television screen. Of course, it was blaring at
- 6:16Speaker 3: Victory Hall right over my shoulders, so maybe that's why,
- 6:18Speaker 3: but it's not. It was not as loud as the
- 6:21Speaker 3: US Australia game was that. I was at the second
- 6:25Speaker 3: match of the six here in Seattle, and it's gonna
- 6:28Speaker 3: I mean that match. The players, you remember, the players
- 6:31Speaker 3: and coaches talked after the match about how that was
- 6:33Speaker 3: the unbelievable, yeah soccer scene they've never had been in
- 6:36Speaker 3: part of that, people are coming up to Christian Rodan
- 6:38Speaker 3: on the bench saying, how do I get to play
- 6:40Speaker 3: for the Sounders? You get to play for this? I
- 6:43Speaker 3: wrote a whole story about at the News Stributes at
- 6:44Speaker 3: the News Tribune dot com about how players are coming
- 6:46Speaker 3: up and going I gotta come to Seattle. This is unbelievable.
- 6:48Speaker 3: And roll On said, yeah, this is what they do
- 6:51Speaker 3: here sixty and twenty five again yesterday in the middle
- 6:56Speaker 3: of a work week at one o'clock for Belgium and
- 6:59Speaker 3: center Goal. And it was a party. It was a
- 7:03Speaker 3: party from the time I walked into the stadium, through
- 7:06Speaker 3: the final disputed whistle, through the penalty kick, through the
- 7:10Speaker 3: after down on Occidental Avenue, and they all spilled right
- 7:12Speaker 3: over to the bars and watched the US match, which
- 7:14Speaker 3: was continuing. A party.
- 7:17Speaker 5: It is.
- 7:18Speaker 3: I've said this and written this. It is unlike the
- 7:20Speaker 3: NFL or college football, or college basketball or Major League baseball,
- 7:24Speaker 3: even which, let's face it is parochial. It's secular. You
- 7:28Speaker 3: like the forty nine ers, you like the Rams, you
- 7:30Speaker 3: like the Seahawks. This ain't that you like you like
- 7:34Speaker 3: the Koogs, and you like the Huskies. This ain't that.
- 7:37Speaker 3: This is everybody who's American hoping that Malik Tillman was
- 7:41Speaker 3: going to make that free kick at the top of
- 7:44Speaker 3: the box in the eighty second. Men, no matter where
- 7:45Speaker 3: you were from, no matter what NFL team or major
- 7:47Speaker 3: league team or college team, and now where you're graduated from,
- 7:50Speaker 3: that's what everyone is rooting for. And now on Monday,
- 7:53Speaker 3: the entire world will be watching Seattle, from the time
- 7:56Speaker 3: they wake up, to the watch parties, to the march ons,
- 8:00Speaker 3: to all of that that's going to be going on downtown.
- 8:02Speaker 3: It's a five pm match, so all of this will
- 8:05Speaker 3: get going, probably knowing these guys about nine am eight am.
- 8:09Speaker 3: I'll be down at Jimmy's on First across the street
- 8:11Speaker 3: from Lewenfield to tell you how it's going to be
- 8:13Speaker 3: building from about ten am for seven hours before the match.
- 8:18Speaker 3: But it's just until you see it. It's just hard
- 8:21Speaker 3: to explain how unifying, not just the United States, all
- 8:27Speaker 3: the countries. Saw a ton of Mexican jerseys, Colombian jerseys
- 8:31Speaker 3: again yesterday, Katarian. They've been eliminating from the tournament Belgium.
- 8:37Speaker 3: Of course, their home base has been here in Seattle.
- 8:40Speaker 3: This is something of a home game for them, although
- 8:41Speaker 3: it certainly won't feel like one on Monday. Who knew,
- 8:45Speaker 3: but it is just different. And nobody's pouring beer on
- 8:48Speaker 3: anybody else's head because they're wearing an opposite jersey, or
- 8:52Speaker 3: it's just a fun celebration of competition in sport, in
- 8:55Speaker 3: nationalism and pride and all of that. I was partying
- 8:59Speaker 3: with a rainy on Friday. I mean, we're at war
- 9:02Speaker 3: with Iran and they were in a bar and accidental
- 9:05Speaker 3: across the street from the stadium. They were probably Ranian
- 9:07Speaker 3: Americans because we're not letting the Iranians in the immigration
- 9:10Speaker 3: policies and our war with them. But the fact is
- 9:13Speaker 3: this is just different.
- 9:15Speaker 1: It is.
- 9:16Speaker 3: And if you are in or around Seattle, I highly
- 9:19Speaker 3: encourage you. And yes, it'll be crowded, Yes, it'll be
- 9:22Speaker 3: an inconvenience. Yes, they'll be lying, Yes they'll be traffic.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Yes that's yes. But I highly encourage you to come
- 9:28Speaker 3: down and watch it because you'll remember it.
- 9:31Speaker 5: Even if you're not in the stadium. Just go to
- 9:33Speaker 5: a bar around the Yeah, go get down there.
- 9:36Speaker 3: Go where Jessman's gonna go. You probably go down to
- 9:38Speaker 3: Peer fifty eight again, aren't you You're going to the
- 9:40Speaker 3: US will have a probably do the same thing and
- 9:42Speaker 3: have Marshon Lynchell will probably be there, MF and everybody.
- 9:45Speaker 4: Well he should because that were the last time he said.
- 9:48Speaker 3: They're going to bring the whole m in place down
- 9:50Speaker 3: and they both did. And they'll know. March from Peer
- 9:54Speaker 3: fifty eight to through Pioneer Square and occidental Park into
- 9:58Speaker 3: the stadium and the Belgians will go at Victory Hall,
- 10:02Speaker 3: which has been their home base before matches across on
- 10:05Speaker 3: First Avenue, across from the Mariners Stadium, and then march
- 10:08Speaker 3: on from the other from the south, and it will
- 10:10Speaker 3: be on and it will be twenty five, thirty forty
- 10:14Speaker 3: years from now you'll say, yeah, I was there for that.
- 10:16Speaker 3: That was really cool. And not to mention the weather,
- 10:20Speaker 3: the fact that it's not bleeding hot and people aren't
- 10:23Speaker 3: passing out, it's just perfect. Yes, it's as perfect a
- 10:27Speaker 3: sporting event as there can be. And hats off to
- 10:29Speaker 3: the Seattle Organizing Commission and the people that have put
- 10:32Speaker 3: this on, and the Seattle Police Department and the Washington
- 10:36Speaker 3: State Patrol and all the levels of security that go
- 10:39Speaker 3: into this. There are a lot you'll see outside and
- 10:41Speaker 3: around the stadiums and so far, knock one lumber, this
- 10:48Speaker 3: has been a very event free as far as trouble.
- 10:52Speaker 3: There were three or four pitch invaders again yesterday and
- 10:54Speaker 3: they were summoned off the field.
- 10:56Speaker 5: But that's not like a violent crime or anything that
- 11:00Speaker 5: we hear about in the you know, the police blotters
- 11:02Speaker 5: and things that relate to downtown on a frequent basis.
- 11:06Speaker 4: We have had a very peaceful time.
- 11:08Speaker 3: We have and it's been universal across the world saying
- 11:12Speaker 3: how great Seattle has been and how the World Cup
- 11:14Speaker 3: should be here. And I've mentioned that a couple people
- 11:17Speaker 3: have come up to me, that soccer veteran journalist telling
- 11:19Speaker 3: me the World Cup finals should be here. On the
- 11:22Speaker 3: show today, we're going to talk about what exactly is
- 11:25Speaker 3: the purpose of VAR and soccer. I mean, come on,
- 11:27Speaker 3: between the Belgium decision and the US decision, it is
- 11:32Speaker 3: so intruding and deciding results. At ten twenty, right after
- 11:35Speaker 3: the break, we're going to talk to our resident soccer man,
- 11:37Speaker 3: Anderson Hurst, he's the iHeartRadio World Cup host, the former
- 11:40Speaker 3: college soccer player, about the VAR system, about the match yesterday,
- 11:43Speaker 3: and more, can the US really do this? How far
- 11:46Speaker 3: can they go? Jessmen mcintyrene I. At one o'clock, excuse me,
- 11:49Speaker 3: eleven o'clock we'll have another keyword, twenty five hundred dollars
- 11:51Speaker 3: your chance to win at nine through three KJR dot com.
- 11:54Speaker 3: Also at eleven o'clock we're gonna talk to Steve Phillips,
- 11:56Speaker 3: the former general manager of the New York Mets, who
- 11:58Speaker 3: is now with Major League Baseball Network and Sirius XM
- 12:02Speaker 3: and MLB ANOS for them. We're going to talk again
- 12:05Speaker 3: like we talked the other day to Jim Bowden about
- 12:07Speaker 3: the dynamics of a general manager in baseball with a
- 12:10Speaker 3: first time field manager in the dugout pertaining a course
- 12:14Speaker 3: to this Mariner situation. We'll talk to him about what
- 12:16Speaker 3: the Mariners should do. Jim Bolden, of course, the other day,
- 12:19Speaker 3: told us go for it, go get it back, go
- 12:21Speaker 3: get a reliever, and go because this is their chance
- 12:23Speaker 3: to win right now. Yeah, he said they can win
- 12:26Speaker 3: the World Series with this water down al Go Now.
- 12:29Speaker 3: We'll talk to Steve Phillips at that at eleven o'clock
- 12:31Speaker 3: eleven thirty. We're redactor text four nine four to five
- 12:33Speaker 3: to one on the Takomodage text line. And if you
- 12:35Speaker 3: haven't gone out of the if you have gone down
- 12:36Speaker 3: of the World Cup, tell us what your impressions and
- 12:38Speaker 3: experiences have been. Mine have been tremendous. I mean, one
- 12:42Speaker 3: of the highlights of my career. And I'm just fortunate
- 12:44Speaker 3: that it's in my backyard. I've been in the stadium
- 12:48Speaker 3: every time. I just go, well, this is pretty cool.
- 12:49Speaker 3: This is my job. I'm pretty excited about that. So
- 12:52Speaker 3: is Anderson Hurst. He will be up next to talk
- 12:54Speaker 3: about the World Cup on ninety three point three KJRFM.
- 13:18Speaker 3: We'll be back Greg bel Jessman McIntyre with you on
- 13:20Speaker 3: a Thursday that feels like a Friday, that's almost like
- 13:23Speaker 3: a Saturday, because we're into the nation's birthday weekend. Hoppy
- 13:26Speaker 3: July fourth to all of you. The Seattle Times reported
- 13:29Speaker 3: this morning that they have talked to King County spokespeople
- 13:32Speaker 3: in King County executive people that do not expect President
- 13:35Speaker 3: Trump or Vice President jd Vance to come to the
- 13:38Speaker 3: US match on Monday, the Round of sixteen against Belgium
- 13:42Speaker 3: at five pm, so there won't be that. What a
- 13:44Speaker 3: layer of extra that would be on top of what's
- 13:46Speaker 3: already going to be incredible spectacle. Anderson Hurst our resident
- 13:51Speaker 3: soccer expert, former Seattle U college player. He does the halftime,
- 13:55Speaker 3: the pregame, the post game for the Iheartratio Network, which
- 13:59Speaker 3: is just going great guns for the all the broadcasts,
- 14:02Speaker 3: not just the US broadcast.
- 14:03Speaker 6: Hats off to you and you appreciate it's been a
- 14:05Speaker 6: ton of fun. I think a lot of people you know,
- 14:08Speaker 6: like to bag on soccer, and this is the one
- 14:10Speaker 6: moment where it gets to shine a little bit, you
- 14:12Speaker 6: know what I mean.
- 14:12Speaker 3: So it sure does, it sure does. Wait, you had
- 14:16Speaker 3: Peter Feuing, your college coach form Seattle, you coach, and
- 14:19Speaker 3: of course the Seattle soccer icon here on the show yesterday.
- 14:23Speaker 3: He was on again this morning with Chuck Powell. What
- 14:26Speaker 3: were yours and coach Fewing's impressions of won the US? Yep,
- 14:30Speaker 3: their grit playing down more than a half hour with
- 14:34Speaker 3: ten men, the goal by Tillman.
- 14:37Speaker 6: Which was just an impeccable free kick, it was, and
- 14:40Speaker 6: the red card disease. So the game itself, I think
- 14:43Speaker 6: I have the biggest impressions on. First of all, I
- 14:47Speaker 6: thought going into this tournament that this US team was
- 14:50Speaker 6: different than in year's past.
- 14:51Speaker 3: Yes, and you said that to your credit, you said
- 14:53Speaker 3: on the air a couple of times.
- 14:55Speaker 6: Yeah, And a lot of it is because it's what
- 14:58Speaker 6: happens we all know in others sports like you go
- 15:00Speaker 6: through these phases when you're young and you first get
- 15:03Speaker 6: to the playoffs, right if we're talking like NFL or
- 15:06Speaker 6: you know, whatever sport played, baseball, you have to you
- 15:08Speaker 6: have to get over the hump and then you continue
- 15:11Speaker 6: to kind of build on you know, what your window is,
- 15:14Speaker 6: right And with the US, they had a very similar
- 15:19Speaker 6: roster in twenty twenty two, so they came into this
- 15:21Speaker 6: World Cup, you know a little more seasoned, more experience.
- 15:25Speaker 6: But I think the biggest thing is what's happened with
- 15:27Speaker 6: the manager, and you could tell there's just a different
- 15:31Speaker 6: not only tactically, the players know exactly what their role is,
- 15:36Speaker 6: which is so important in soccer. It's it's i think
- 15:39Speaker 6: almost maybe just short of football in terms of what
- 15:44Speaker 6: your coach is trying to deliver for you as a
- 15:47Speaker 6: player in what specifically your role is. Soccer is next
- 15:51Speaker 6: the next level of importance. You can kind of, you know,
- 15:54Speaker 6: tell basketball players, okay, just go and take a guy
- 15:57Speaker 6: one on one, right, you know it's five players on five,
- 15:59Speaker 6: you know, do your thing. Similar with hockey a little
- 16:02Speaker 6: bit more, I would say, you know, baseball is very
- 16:06Speaker 6: much an individual type of game. It's all about in
- 16:09Speaker 6: the matchups. But soccer, I think it's all about everyone
- 16:12Speaker 6: doing their role correctly. And I think it's very similar
- 16:15Speaker 6: to football in that way. So having a good good
- 16:18Speaker 6: first of all, good game plan, second of all, good
- 16:20Speaker 6: communication of that game plan, and for a guy where
- 16:22Speaker 6: it's English as a second language, that's been quite impressive
- 16:25Speaker 6: to me. How you know much these players know what
- 16:30Speaker 6: they're supposed to do, and then the ability to adjust
- 16:34Speaker 6: that game plan when things go awry, and it's not
- 16:36Speaker 6: even necessarily to your fault that they go awry. But
- 16:38Speaker 6: when you get the red card, you can't play the
- 16:40Speaker 6: same way as you did before when you had eleven men.
- 16:43Speaker 6: And I saw two different managers last night, one for
- 16:47Speaker 6: Bosie and Herzegovina, who was freaking out after every single
- 16:50Speaker 6: call gets a yellow card, and I saw Reco Pochettino.
- 16:55Speaker 6: The red card happened in the sixty fourth minute, a
- 16:58Speaker 6: couple minutes before the hydra break, so he had a
- 17:00Speaker 6: chance to kind of figure out exactly what he wanted
- 17:03Speaker 6: to do in terms of changing the adjustment. And I
- 17:06Speaker 6: saw one of the calmest people that I've ever seen
- 17:08Speaker 6: in a knockout stage game, his first time coaching at
- 17:11Speaker 6: the World Cup on home soil, with expectations up one
- 17:17Speaker 6: zero down a man one of the most stressful moments
- 17:20Speaker 6: in a soccer game, and he showed so much poise
- 17:25Speaker 6: and he exerted that onto his players, and you saw
- 17:28Speaker 6: what they were able to do after that hydration break.
- 17:31Speaker 6: They still looked like the better team. They looked like
- 17:33Speaker 6: the team that was more likely to score. They didn't
- 17:35Speaker 6: park above, No, they did not. And I think that
- 17:37Speaker 6: one hundred percent goes into the coaching, the communication, and
- 17:43Speaker 6: the player leadership who have all been there and done that,
- 17:46Speaker 6: and I just I'm going to keep saying this team
- 17:48Speaker 6: feels different. So that's that's really really good to see.
- 17:51Speaker 6: They overcame a hurdle last night that I had not
- 17:55Speaker 6: seen a US men's national team overcome in my lifetime before.
- 17:59Speaker 6: And that's first of all, winning a knockout stage game.
- 18:01Speaker 6: They haven't done that since two thousand and two. And
- 18:03Speaker 6: then second of all, this is the first time again
- 18:06Speaker 6: in my lifetime, where they have played a knockout game
- 18:08Speaker 6: where they were expected to win. In the previous versions
- 18:11Speaker 6: of the World Cup, they had gone in and it's like, okay,
- 18:13Speaker 6: we're playing the Netherlands. If we win, great, If not, okay,
- 18:16Speaker 6: it's a successful World Cup. At this point, they were
- 18:18Speaker 6: expected to win and if they lost, the torches would
- 18:22Speaker 6: be lit and the pitchfork would be coming after you.
- 18:24Speaker 6: And they knew that and they embraced the pressure and
- 18:27Speaker 6: I love that. I love that from that group you're in.
- 18:31Speaker 3: Peter Fewing's impressions of the red card on Balligan. I'm
- 18:37Speaker 3: not a soccer expert, but I think what is the
- 18:39Speaker 3: purpose of var here? The intervention of Var. You could
- 18:42Speaker 3: argue the same thing in the Belgium Senegal match. Once
- 18:45Speaker 3: the Var interjacks, it almost isn't compelling the official to call,
- 18:49Speaker 3: especially in a free frame moment like that.
- 18:51Speaker 6: Yeah, I think there's multiple layers to this, all of
- 18:54Speaker 6: which do not shine brightly on the decision that was
- 18:57Speaker 6: finally made. But first, in my opinion, the if you
- 19:02Speaker 6: take the tackle in a vacuum, it's not a red card,
- 19:05Speaker 6: mainly because of the intent. You could tell Florient it
- 19:08Speaker 6: was literally just a tangle of the legs and he
- 19:10Speaker 6: was finding a place for his foot to be put
- 19:12Speaker 6: down and the Bosnian defender happened to slide his foot
- 19:16Speaker 6: directly under where he was putting it. And yes, it
- 19:18Speaker 6: looks bad in slow motion, but you know whatever, But
- 19:23Speaker 6: that's not even the worst part about this decision. The
- 19:24Speaker 6: worst part about this decision is the fact that it's
- 19:27Speaker 6: so inconsistent with how they have been using VAR compared
- 19:30Speaker 6: to the rest of the tournament. More often than not,
- 19:33Speaker 6: there was a concerted effort coming into the World Cup
- 19:37Speaker 6: where there was this kind of thought process with previous
- 19:41Speaker 6: World Cups and you know in the European leagues and
- 19:43Speaker 6: the Premier League, Champions League, stuff like that, where VR
- 19:45Speaker 6: would be too much in too much intervention, where they
- 19:49Speaker 6: would try and re referee is what the phrase they use.
- 19:52Speaker 6: They try and re referee the situation. And they didn't
- 19:55Speaker 6: want that to be the case. They want it to
- 19:56Speaker 6: be okay if it's a clear and obvious error. The
- 20:00Speaker 6: the threshold for going to VAR would be much higher
- 20:03Speaker 6: for this tournament. And you've seen that, You've seen kind
- 20:07Speaker 6: of questionable calls that they stick more often than not,
- 20:10Speaker 6: they stick with what the call was made on the field.
- 20:12Speaker 6: And the fact that there was not even a foul
- 20:14Speaker 6: called on the field, not even a yellow card called
- 20:17Speaker 6: on the field, the fact that they told him to
- 20:19Speaker 6: go to VAR and switch that is so inconsistent with
- 20:24Speaker 6: what they have been doing all tournament long. And then
- 20:27Speaker 6: the cherry on top of that, as you compare that,
- 20:29Speaker 6: there was a tackle that I'm a huge Argentina fan.
- 20:32Speaker 6: There's a tackle that Lionel Messi made Argentinian against Algeria.
- 20:37Speaker 6: Uh Argentina. Yeah, and I'll be frank, Neither of them
- 20:40Speaker 6: are red cards, right. A lot of people are saying, oh,
- 20:42Speaker 6: if one's a red card, the other one's a red card.
- 20:44Speaker 6: Neither of them are red cards. And the fact that
- 20:46Speaker 6: you didn't call that one and did call this one
- 20:48Speaker 6: is just it's it's mind boggling to me. There's so
- 20:50Speaker 6: many wrong ways about this.
- 20:51Speaker 3: Let's define that. I could argue the same for the
- 20:54Speaker 3: Senegal call in the game I was watching. I completely
- 20:56Speaker 3: agree that that was not a run a play call,
- 20:58Speaker 3: and the referee didn't call that there was another intervention
- 21:01Speaker 3: by var Let's define they in VR. This is not
- 21:04Speaker 3: like the NFL, where the NFL officiating office in New
- 21:06Speaker 3: York has the all encompassing authority. These are individual, three
- 21:10Speaker 3: person crews. They show him in the stupid statuet thing
- 21:13Speaker 3: at the start of the match. Yeah, those dudes and
- 21:16Speaker 3: gals are the ones who have the autonomy inside their
- 21:19Speaker 3: own little video booth for each match to make these decisions.
- 21:22Speaker 3: There's no FIFA feifdom over in Zurich somewhere that is
- 21:26Speaker 3: saying that's a red car these are the individual three
- 21:29Speaker 3: person crews on the But to your point, there is
- 21:34Speaker 3: obviously no consistency from one match to that, which is
- 21:37Speaker 3: really appalling. When you get to the knockout stage. Senegal's
- 21:41Speaker 3: going home because of this. Yes, Bosnia could have tied
- 21:44Speaker 3: the game because.
- 21:45Speaker 6: Of this, and you won't have your best player for
- 21:47Speaker 6: the next game. And yeah, that's the other thing. And
- 21:49Speaker 6: possibly longer I saw a report today, they might extend.
- 21:52Speaker 3: If they think it was a malicious, injurious act.
- 21:55Speaker 6: I just would be so dumbfounded if that would end
- 21:58Speaker 6: up being the case. But no, and let's let's be
- 22:01Speaker 6: clear to the listeners about what actually goes on. Yes,
- 22:04Speaker 6: it's the people in the booth that they show the
- 22:06Speaker 6: var referee. They they it's their job to basically be like, hey,
- 22:11Speaker 6: you might want to take a second look at this.
- 22:13Speaker 6: It's not they're not making the call. It's the They
- 22:16Speaker 6: tell the ref hey, you need to go to the
- 22:18Speaker 6: video monitor and check this again.
- 22:20Speaker 3: But as soon as they freeze frame it and show
- 22:21Speaker 3: them the bent ankle.
- 22:22Speaker 6: Yeah, then he's gonna call it again. More often than
- 22:24Speaker 6: notine eighty percent of the time when they go to
- 22:26Speaker 6: the monitor, they're gonna switch the call right, So yes,
- 22:29Speaker 6: you're you are correct in that sense, but it's just
- 22:33Speaker 6: and I think one of the reasons people have been
- 22:35Speaker 6: praising the refereeing in this tournament so far up until
- 22:38Speaker 6: this point has been because it's been very hands off.
- 22:41Speaker 6: They allow the referees to ref the game unless it's,
- 22:44Speaker 6: like I said, a clear and obvious era you just
- 22:46Speaker 6: missed it, like straight up missed it. If there's any
- 22:49Speaker 6: sort of question marks, stick with the call in the field.
- 22:52Speaker 6: And they didn't do that last night.
- 22:54Speaker 3: Clear and obvious there. That was first game to mind
- 22:56Speaker 3: to me. I mean, that's to me, that's the purpose
- 22:58Speaker 3: of var exactly. But that's not how it's being implied.
- 23:00Speaker 3: This is of course Anderson Hurst. You hear them all
- 23:02Speaker 3: the time on the iHeartRadio app. You hear him all
- 23:04Speaker 3: the time on our stations. He's doing triple duty on
- 23:07Speaker 3: top of being a dad, for being a producer for
- 23:09Speaker 3: Ian Fanessa's show. He's doing the iHeart matches. Are you
- 23:12Speaker 3: doing Spain Austria too?
- 23:13Speaker 6: No to have the day off for the pre half
- 23:16Speaker 6: post today, but guess what game I get to do tomorrow?
- 23:18Speaker 6: Oh man Argentina k Verda imagine that Let's go I'm
- 23:22Speaker 6: sure you'll be right down the middle, and yeah, everyone
- 23:24Speaker 6: gets the day off except the World Cup, so you
- 23:26Speaker 6: know that's right.
- 23:27Speaker 3: That is true. So to clarify for those on the
- 23:31Speaker 3: text line, is a lot of people asking can they
- 23:33Speaker 3: appeal this? They can't appeal it during normal cannot through
- 23:37Speaker 3: normal channels because but they could go to the disciplinary
- 23:40Speaker 3: committee for fIF am I correct.
- 23:42Speaker 6: Correct, Yes they could. It's very unlikely that it gets overturned.
- 23:46Speaker 6: I think the most likely scenario is they stick with
- 23:49Speaker 6: just the one game suspension. It won't get extended further
- 23:52Speaker 6: than that, and I don't think they'll appeal it or
- 23:55Speaker 6: because the thing is, this is where I the worst
- 23:58Speaker 6: part of the decision is the var part of it.
- 24:00Speaker 6: If they had called red card on the field, I
- 24:02Speaker 6: think you would see a lot more at least. Okay,
- 24:05Speaker 6: I can sort of understand why you called that, and
- 24:09Speaker 6: you know, go into the video and trying to overturn
- 24:11Speaker 6: what it would have been an originally a red card
- 24:14Speaker 6: in the first place would have been difficult to do.
- 24:17Speaker 6: The fact that they didn't call it on the field
- 24:19Speaker 6: and then switched it is the worst part about this
- 24:21Speaker 6: whole decision. So yes, there is a little bit of
- 24:25Speaker 6: an endangering of the opponent. Everyone likes to that maybe
- 24:28Speaker 6: is defending the decision. That's the quote that they're using,
- 24:31Speaker 6: because there is an element of that with red cards,
- 24:34Speaker 6: if you're endangering the safety and opponent. I mean, it's
- 24:39Speaker 6: so much of these are subjective, and that's why I
- 24:42Speaker 6: usually like the let the referee who's on the field
- 24:45Speaker 6: in the moment, although he wasn't great last night, not
- 24:48Speaker 6: just in that decision and other stuff too, but usually
- 24:52Speaker 6: that's the kind of decision where let the guy who's
- 24:56Speaker 6: on the field right next to the play make the decision.
- 24:57Speaker 6: Don't look at it in a free strame.
- 24:59Speaker 3: Okay, So Flow, who by far is the most dynamic
- 25:01Speaker 3: US player, is not going to play. Yeah, Polistic is
- 25:05Speaker 3: known as the best player, but I don't know. I
- 25:07Speaker 3: think maybe a game break.
- 25:08Speaker 6: Yeah yeah, yeah, he's the best goal scorer. I'll put
- 25:10Speaker 6: it that way.
- 25:11Speaker 3: He won't play. It all appears and barring some kind
- 25:13Speaker 3: of crazy tribunal like go to the Hague or something,
- 25:16Speaker 3: between now and Monday, do you put Ricardo Pepe and
- 25:20Speaker 3: go with two strikers with Polistic? What what do you
- 25:22Speaker 3: do tactically? How do you think they're going to handle this.
- 25:25Speaker 6: I think it's a straight swap with Ricardo Peppy.
- 25:28Speaker 3: Will they do two in the front as they did
- 25:30Speaker 3: against Australia.
- 25:31Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't think so, because it was Peppy and Baligan,
- 25:34Speaker 6: remember sure, and then because that was without Polisic, right,
- 25:37Speaker 6: I think what they'll do and you it's a very
- 25:40Speaker 6: fluid formation, but the traditional striker, I think there's just
- 25:43Speaker 6: gonna be one. It's going to be Peppy and then
- 25:45Speaker 6: Polistic will kind of play more off to the left
- 25:47Speaker 6: and a little bit deeper, you know. And then with
- 25:51Speaker 6: McKenney as well, kind of both supplying uh service to
- 25:56Speaker 6: Ricardo Peppy and I actually think this works pretty well
- 25:59Speaker 6: in their favor. I've all he's been a fan of
- 26:00Speaker 6: Ricardo Peppe. I thought he should have had an opportunity
- 26:03Speaker 6: to be a starter from the get go, and I'm
- 26:05Speaker 6: happy they went to that in the Australia mansion. It
- 26:08Speaker 6: proved to be a good decision because he was very
- 26:10Speaker 6: effective in that game. He's much better than Balligan with
- 26:13Speaker 6: his back to goal kind of hold up play and
- 26:15Speaker 6: then he can allow players to run off of him
- 26:18Speaker 6: a little bit. So maybe if like he provides a
- 26:20Speaker 6: little bit more of an outlet to pass the ball
- 26:22Speaker 6: defeat with his back to the goal, and then you
- 26:24Speaker 6: know combinations off of that. So I think it's a
- 26:28Speaker 6: lot of people are devastated and it's like, oh, he's
- 26:31Speaker 6: one of the best players. Your top goal scorer is
- 26:32Speaker 6: going out, might as well, you know the gues is
- 26:35Speaker 6: going home now because of that. That's not true at all.
- 26:37Speaker 6: I think that you don't have much of a drop off,
- 26:39Speaker 6: like a little bit from Baaligan to Peppy, just because
- 26:43Speaker 6: Baligan's been so good. But I think PEPPI will step
- 26:46Speaker 6: in and perform admirably.
- 26:48Speaker 3: This is also not the same Belgian team as even
- 26:51Speaker 3: four years ago. I've watched him in person now twice
- 26:53Speaker 3: Sarre in Seattle. They were slow as hell yesterday for
- 26:57Speaker 3: most of them. Match he should have lost, but they
- 26:59Speaker 3: were five minutes so believes just ran or just ran
- 27:02Speaker 3: them over. And the US has similar speed they do.
- 27:06Speaker 6: This is where I get a little bit worried because
- 27:09Speaker 6: Belgium it feels like at any moment can just turn
- 27:11Speaker 6: it on, right, and that's kind of what happened yesterday, right,
- 27:14Speaker 6: And and it's funny because they took out probably their
- 27:16Speaker 6: two best players.
- 27:17Speaker 3: Actually, I was going to ask you about that. Did
- 27:19Speaker 3: the Bruner come off the bench now? Because they took
- 27:21Speaker 3: him out at the sixty minute, fifty ninth minute, and
- 27:24Speaker 3: that's when they took all They were down to nothing
- 27:26Speaker 3: with their World Cup and steak. They took the Bruyan
- 27:28Speaker 3: and don't take them out.
- 27:29Speaker 6: Yeah, I think the bigger thing is in the players
- 27:31Speaker 6: they took out. It's who they put in. It's Romol
- 27:33Speaker 6: Lucaku who's been He hasn't started a game, but he's
- 27:36Speaker 6: their top goal scorer. That's insane to me. I don't
- 27:39Speaker 6: know how that's the case. Maybe he's not fully fit.
- 27:42Speaker 6: Maybe they know that he provides a second, dynamic kind
- 27:45Speaker 6: of coming off the bench in the last twenty minutes
- 27:47Speaker 6: of a game. I'm not sure. The question mark is
- 27:50Speaker 6: if he starts. If he starts, that's going to provide
- 27:52Speaker 6: a handful for Tim Reem, Chris Richards and Alex Freeman.
- 27:58Speaker 6: So I that's gonna be the big question mark for me.
- 28:01Speaker 6: I think de Bruyne still starts.
- 28:02Speaker 3: You have to.
- 28:02Speaker 6: He's kind of their leader. Doku's just so dynamic when
- 28:05Speaker 6: he's on the ball. Yes, his end product has a
- 28:07Speaker 6: lot of a question mark to it, but you have
- 28:10Speaker 6: to start those guys. The bigger question is whether Romolu
- 28:12Speaker 6: Lukaku's is fit enough to start this game from the beginning.
- 28:15Speaker 6: And that is where I would get a little bit
- 28:17Speaker 6: worried because we've seen it now against Australia and against Bosnia.
- 28:23Speaker 6: The physical, sit back and defend types of teams aren't
- 28:27Speaker 6: the teams that bother the US that much. I still
- 28:30Speaker 6: go back to the Australia match and I noticed a
- 28:33Speaker 6: shift when they started the game. They tried to just
- 28:36Speaker 6: sit back and defend with five and play for free kicks,
- 28:39Speaker 6: and the US just looked like it was easy.
- 28:41Speaker 3: Right.
- 28:42Speaker 6: They know how to break those teams down much easier
- 28:45Speaker 6: than if you try and take the game to them.
- 28:46Speaker 6: And that's what Australia did in the second half, and
- 28:48Speaker 6: that's why they struggled. That's why I'm so surprised with
- 28:50Speaker 6: Bosnia and how they went about the game last night.
- 28:53Speaker 6: And I get it, and some teams aren't able to
- 28:55Speaker 6: do that as easily. And that's why Turkey gave the
- 28:57Speaker 6: US some trouble, is because they took the game to
- 28:59Speaker 6: the US. Belgium I have a feeling is going to
- 29:02Speaker 6: do that same thing, and that's why there's a little
- 29:04Speaker 6: bit of worry in my head. I still feel like
- 29:05Speaker 6: the US is the better team. They have the better roster,
- 29:08Speaker 6: they have the better coach, but there is some question
- 29:13Speaker 6: marks about you know, what the Belgians will do against
- 29:15Speaker 6: the US.
- 29:16Speaker 3: Three Lions escape thanks to Harry Kane.
- 29:21Speaker 6: Night him.
- 29:21Speaker 3: Now I think they probably did in the changing room
- 29:24Speaker 3: after the match.
- 29:25Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 29:26Speaker 3: Now, a Battle Royale and a Studios Tech Hall on
- 29:29Speaker 3: Sunday at five o'clock.
- 29:30Speaker 6: That's gonna be one of the best games in the
- 29:31Speaker 6: knockout stage. I'm telling you right.
- 29:32Speaker 3: Now, Andrews in Mexico has scores. Now, I mean they've
- 29:35Speaker 3: always been a rugged, defensive team, right, and now they've
- 29:38Speaker 3: got scores. I think with the altitude one hundred thousand people,
- 29:43Speaker 3: they're going to beat England. What do you think?
- 29:44Speaker 6: You're not alone in thinking that it's a very fifty
- 29:47Speaker 6: to fifty for me, because I believe England. England's team
- 29:50Speaker 6: is better. England's squad is better, but they haven't really
- 29:53Speaker 6: looked convincing up until this point. But you could say
- 29:56Speaker 6: that about a lot of teams they like. Belgian's one
- 29:58Speaker 6: of them.
- 29:59Speaker 5: Right.
- 29:59Speaker 6: They continue to move even though they haven't looked great
- 30:01Speaker 6: for the majority of their time at this tournament. But
- 30:04Speaker 6: I don't know, man, this Mexican team seemed like very
- 30:07Speaker 6: similar to the US actually, where they've struggled to get
- 30:10Speaker 6: over the hump. They feel like they have a lot
- 30:12Speaker 6: of talent. If this Mexican team feels different, very similar
- 30:16Speaker 6: to the US, they in the it's in a different
- 30:19Speaker 6: way though, because the thing that would kind of limit
- 30:23Speaker 6: Mexico from moving on is kind of very dumb fouls
- 30:27Speaker 6: in terrible moments, lack of discipline, lack of composure, because
- 30:34Speaker 6: they would always have talent for sure, and I think
- 30:38Speaker 6: they've really eliminated that aspect to their game. They defend
- 30:42Speaker 6: really well, compact together. They haven't allowed a goal this
- 30:45Speaker 6: whole tournament, right exactly, It's it's insane. But the other
- 30:52Speaker 6: aspect to this, everyone across the soccer world for the
- 30:58Speaker 6: longest time, when the US would struggle to win in Mexico,
- 31:03Speaker 6: is now realizing how hard it is to do. Yes,
- 31:06Speaker 6: because not only the altitude, but just Mexico's home field
- 31:12Speaker 6: advantage is different than I think any others in frankly
- 31:16Speaker 6: in the world with their fans and how much they
- 31:19Speaker 6: change the atmosphere how much they feed energy to their team.
- 31:26Speaker 6: England are going to realize and for those who are
- 31:29Speaker 6: giving the US crap for not being able to win
- 31:31Speaker 6: in Mexico because they haven't for a long time, they're
- 31:34Speaker 6: going to realize how difficult it is to beat Mexico
- 31:37Speaker 6: in Mexico. And that's I think a big reason why
- 31:40Speaker 6: they've been so successful.
- 31:41Speaker 3: My college soccer playing Sun brought up to the point
- 31:43Speaker 3: the other night watching the Mexico Ecuador match that Mexico
- 31:46Speaker 3: plays such a deep seeded back LINEE let's pushed so
- 31:49Speaker 3: far back that back. Yeah, that requires such of their midfielders.
- 31:53Speaker 3: They have to cover so much grounds to do. And
- 31:55Speaker 3: when they play in Mexico City, it's at seventy three
- 31:58Speaker 3: hundred feet Yeah, I mean we've mile high is high
- 32:01Speaker 3: in Denver it's again two thousand feet above that. He
- 32:05Speaker 3: thinks Mexico's midfielders is why they win. Yeah.
- 32:07Speaker 6: They start a seventeen year old, the second youngest starter
- 32:11Speaker 6: in World Cup history. You know, the youngest is Hale
- 32:14Speaker 6: Palle Yeah, the only guy that's younger to start a
- 32:17Speaker 6: World Cup knockout stage match. Then Hilberto Mora for Mexico,
- 32:23Speaker 6: who is a absolute stud by the way, he's becoming
- 32:27Speaker 6: like the young player of this tournament. Every single World
- 32:29Speaker 6: Cup there's always a young player that kind of breaks
- 32:31Speaker 6: out of nowhere. He's kind of becoming that guy. But
- 32:36Speaker 6: he's a stud. And I think Obed Vargas has a
- 32:39Speaker 6: chance maybe not to start because they've shown a lot
- 32:41Speaker 6: of success with the two guys that they have in
- 32:43Speaker 6: there now, but he comes on and makes a difference
- 32:45Speaker 6: every single time. So the former sounder is a big
- 32:47Speaker 6: part of that as well.
- 32:48Speaker 3: And as you played soccer for twenty five plus years
- 32:51Speaker 3: in the city you played college here in Seattle University,
- 32:54Speaker 3: what is this World Cup meant to the Pacific Northwest
- 32:57Speaker 3: to Seattle And what's Mondays spectacle that we'reund of sixteen
- 33:02Speaker 3: here in Seattle going to be.
- 33:03Speaker 6: It's pretty simple what Monday is going to be. It's
- 33:05Speaker 6: going to be the biggest sporting event in Seattle history,
- 33:09Speaker 6: borderline biggest event in Seattle history, depending on how you
- 33:12Speaker 6: measure that. But I mean, I'm biased. I'm a soccer fan,
- 33:15Speaker 6: I'm a huge World Cup fan, and I live in Seattle,
- 33:17Speaker 6: so but I think and they've mentioned it multiple times
- 33:21Speaker 6: on the broadcast when the US aren't even in Seattle.
- 33:24Speaker 6: They say, oh, they're going back to Seattle, the best
- 33:28Speaker 6: probably the best atmosphere at this World Cup. They talked
- 33:32Speaker 6: about that on the air, which is really dang cool.
- 33:35Speaker 6: I just I'm bursting with pride, not only for this
- 33:38Speaker 6: US men's national team and the fact that they're finally
- 33:41Speaker 6: having some success on the biggest stage, and it's it's
- 33:44Speaker 6: a brand of soccer that I can get behind and
- 33:46Speaker 6: I love watching, but the fact that they're able to
- 33:49Speaker 6: do that, and the couple that with how much love
- 33:53Speaker 6: our city is getting as as a host city, as
- 33:57Speaker 6: a stadium, as a as a downtown area, and how
- 34:00Speaker 6: cool it is to have it directly in the city,
- 34:02Speaker 6: which is very different from a lot of the stadiums
- 34:04Speaker 6: that they're playing in, and just that Seattle is a
- 34:08Speaker 6: soccer town. I think we've known that for a long time,
- 34:10Speaker 6: but having it get not just national attention but global
- 34:14Speaker 6: attention with how cool you know this is, It's it's
- 34:19Speaker 6: really special and I think enjoy Monday. I know it's
- 34:21Speaker 6: going to be a zoo and some people if maybe
- 34:25Speaker 6: soccer is not your main thing, and you may realize
- 34:29Speaker 6: that there might be some more traffic in the area
- 34:31Speaker 6: and just more people you know, talking about it at
- 34:34Speaker 6: your coffee shops or whatever. Then you may be used
- 34:36Speaker 6: to lean into it because it's you won't get this off.
- 34:40Speaker 6: It won't happen in my lifetime again. There won't be
- 34:42Speaker 6: a Round of sixteen match involving the United States men's
- 34:45Speaker 6: national team in Seattle for the World Cup in my
- 34:47Speaker 6: lifetime ever again. So enjoy it, lean into it, and
- 34:51Speaker 6: have some fun with it.
- 34:51Speaker 3: Anderson Harris, thank you. I know you're busy, busy lady man.
- 34:54Speaker 3: I thank you for coming in. He'll be there Monday.
- 34:57Speaker 3: I'll be there Monday. We'll be having a live Monday
- 34:59Speaker 3: of five O the United States and Belgium down at Blomenfield.
- 35:02Speaker 3: I'll be at Jimmy's in first at ten am on Monday.
- 35:04Speaker 3: Thank you, sir, appreciate you. Up next, more about the
- 35:07Speaker 3: World Cup. What I saw yesterday in the scene of
- 35:09Speaker 3: Belgium and Senegal. Again, I look ahead to what's in
- 35:12Speaker 3: store for everyone here in Seattle on Monday, and Steve Phillips,
- 35:15Speaker 3: former Major League general manager, is going to talk to
- 35:17Speaker 3: us about the dynamics of a first time bench manager
- 35:20Speaker 3: with a GM that's at ninety three point three KJRFM.
- 35:34Speaker 3: Welcome Mack, Greg Bell, Jasman McIntyre with you on a
- 35:36Speaker 3: Thursday before the holiday weekend. I hope you're having a
- 35:39Speaker 3: great Thursday and hopefully maybe getting a day off and
- 35:42Speaker 3: getting into the weekend if you're planning on going to
- 35:44Speaker 3: the World Cup match on Monday here in Seattle between
- 35:47Speaker 3: Belgium and the United States and a round of sixteen
- 35:50Speaker 3: tickets I've noticed on the secondary online ticket sites are
- 35:53Speaker 3: about twenty three hundred dollars to get in as of
- 35:56Speaker 3: right now, and I would be aware of some of
- 35:59Speaker 3: the secondary ticket sites. The BBC is the latest of
- 36:03Speaker 3: many outlets that have broadcast reports and published reports, particularly
- 36:09Speaker 3: targeting stub Hub, and most of the reports I've seen
- 36:11Speaker 3: is StubHub dot com is engaging what's called speculative ticketing.
- 36:18Speaker 3: What's that, well, buyers and put in air quotes post
- 36:23Speaker 3: tickets that they don't actually possess, with the hopes of
- 36:26Speaker 3: buying them later for less than they're selling them for
- 36:29Speaker 3: on the site and clearing the profit. And then what
- 36:32Speaker 3: happens is they may procure those tickets, but then they
- 36:36Speaker 3: see the market for the game go wayt sky high
- 36:38Speaker 3: because of the demand, and they don't fulfill the request
- 36:42Speaker 3: at the lower price and sell it at a higher price.
- 36:43Speaker 5: I remember this happening to people in Arizona for the
- 36:46Speaker 5: Seahawks second Super Bowl run exactly. I just remember people
- 36:50Speaker 5: from Seattle that I knew who spent thousands of dollars
- 36:53Speaker 5: on the tickets and the travel, showing up to.
- 36:56Speaker 4: The game and not having them.
- 36:57Speaker 3: The BBC interviewed from Argentina who was living in Texas.
- 37:03Speaker 3: His parents lived in Mexico, and he bought two tickets
- 37:07Speaker 3: for seventeen hundred dollars each to see Argentina and Austria
- 37:11Speaker 3: play in Dallas or Arlington. And he spent six thousand
- 37:14Speaker 3: dollars to fly his parents from Mexico to Dallas and
- 37:20Speaker 3: for two StubHub tickets. He thought he was getting for
- 37:22Speaker 3: thirty four hundred dollars that they could come with him,
- 37:25Speaker 3: and StubHub never fulfilled the request. The tickets were the Allegedly,
- 37:30Speaker 3: the experts in the industry say the tickets were sold
- 37:33Speaker 3: to someone else who would pay more. To quote Chris
- 37:38Speaker 3: arc that ain't right. But this is not new. As
- 37:42Speaker 3: Jessman said, this happens at the Super Bowl as well.
- 37:45Speaker 3: What's different about this one? Is I'd noticed StubHub is
- 37:47Speaker 3: getting all the flack and most of the complaints. Another
- 37:51Speaker 3: thing I've noticed anecdotally. I'd bought a ticket for my
- 37:54Speaker 3: son on one of these secondary sites to go to
- 37:57Speaker 3: the Egypt Aron match Friday night at Luminfield, which was crazy,
- 38:00Speaker 3: great match and he's so glad he went. He paid
- 38:03Speaker 3: about five hundred dollars or so to sit in the
- 38:05Speaker 3: third deck in the corner. But there are tickets you
- 38:09Speaker 3: can buy that are quote zone tickets. They don't give
- 38:14Speaker 3: you an actual section, row and seat No. Interesting because
- 38:18Speaker 3: FIFA on their website, the official ticket website, puts tickets
- 38:22Speaker 3: in categories and zones. I would be really really wary
- 38:26Speaker 3: of buying tickets that are just in zones that don't
- 38:28Speaker 3: have a seat number, a row number, and a section number.
- 38:31Speaker 4: Yeah, it sounds like general admission kind of, but at
- 38:33Speaker 4: least you get in with GA.
- 38:35Speaker 3: And it also suggests that the seller doesn't actually have
- 38:38Speaker 3: the ticket in his possession or else he would probably
- 38:40Speaker 3: publish the row, seat and section number. So I told
- 38:45Speaker 3: my son, don't buy that ticket. Let's get one that
- 38:47Speaker 3: has an actual seat number, row and you can verify
- 38:50Speaker 3: that you're going to get it. Here's the other thing.
- 38:52Speaker 3: Because FIFA controls all of the tickets, even on the
- 38:55Speaker 3: secondary sites. If you even buy a ticket, you don't
- 38:58Speaker 3: get it until about an hour or two before the match.
- 39:00Speaker 3: That's how especially if you've flown from who knows where
- 39:06Speaker 3: I flew from Belgium for Monday's match. FIFA is not
- 39:10Speaker 3: going to fulfill the ticket request or transfer it through
- 39:15Speaker 3: vivid seats or game time or anybody until an hour
- 39:18Speaker 3: or two before the match. My son on Friday was
- 39:19Speaker 3: just walking around with I hope I get my ticket. Oh,
- 39:23Speaker 3: I bet five hundred and eighty dollars on it. I
- 39:25Speaker 3: hope I get it, and he and it. He did,
- 39:27Speaker 3: and it actually was about an hour and thirty minutes,
- 39:29Speaker 3: which I'm told is a little bit earlier than some
- 39:31Speaker 3: people get them.
- 39:33Speaker 4: That would that would really have me in an anxiety place.
- 39:35Speaker 3: Yes, so beware. I we'd love for everyone to have
- 39:40Speaker 3: the experience. I am blessed that I'm going to be
- 39:42Speaker 3: in the stadium covering it for the News Tribune again
- 39:44Speaker 3: on Monday. And if you want to get in the stadium,
- 39:47Speaker 3: I get it, but be careful because this I would
- 39:50Speaker 3: my advice so far as to not buy tickets to
- 39:52Speaker 3: say zone and not an actual seat row and section number.
- 39:56Speaker 3: And I hate to say it, but I'd have voiced
- 39:58Speaker 3: ub up because that's what all the ports are saying
- 40:00Speaker 3: is not good stuff. And we told you why. Up next,
- 40:04Speaker 3: let's shift gears the Baseball about the Mariners having first
- 40:07Speaker 3: time managers now for the last two of them, Scott
- 40:09Speaker 3: Service and Dan Wilson, first time manager with no managerial experience.
- 40:14Speaker 3: What a GM's role is in that. We've talked a
- 40:16Speaker 3: lot about Jerry Depoto and Justin Hollander and their influence
- 40:19Speaker 3: on the day to day in the dugout. Steve Phillips,
- 40:22Speaker 3: former general manager now MLB Network and SiriusXM Major League Baseball,
- 40:27Speaker 3: and so join us on the phone next about that
- 40:29Speaker 3: on ninety three point three KJRFM. Welcome back, drag bellessin McIntyre.
- 40:53Speaker 3: We you live on ninety three point three KJRFM in Seattle,
- 40:57Speaker 3: where on Monday there will be the biggest sporting event
- 40:59Speaker 3: in Seattle history, the United States against Belgium in the
- 41:01Speaker 3: round of sixteen in the World Cup. Before that, the
- 41:05Speaker 3: Mariners play here in Seattle. They played a night to
- 41:07Speaker 3: finish the series against the Angels six forty start tomorrow
- 41:12Speaker 3: the Toronto Blue Jays come into town for their annual
- 41:15Speaker 3: invasion and the BC fans will come in and all
- 41:17Speaker 3: of that good stuff. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Steve Phillips,
- 41:22Speaker 3: former major league general manager, now a Major League Baseball
- 41:26Speaker 3: analyst for MLB Network and Serious XM, joined us on
- 41:29Speaker 3: the Beacon Plumbing Highland. Steve, thank you for joining us
- 41:31Speaker 3: on a holiday weekend, or hopefully it's already a holiday
- 41:33Speaker 3: weekend for you.
- 41:34Speaker 1: Hello, sir, Hi, good, good afternoon.
- 41:38Speaker 3: Good to be with you.
- 41:38Speaker 1: I'm actually on my way to Scaucus. Yeah, okay, network,
- 41:45Speaker 1: So yeah, so no holiday when it's baseball.
- 41:49Speaker 3: That's right. You're well aware of that at your career
- 41:51Speaker 3: in the league. I think Jesse McIntyre, my producer, alerted
- 41:55Speaker 3: you to the fact that I'm going to ask you
- 41:56Speaker 3: first about the dynamics of being a Major League Baseball
- 41:59Speaker 3: general manager with first time managers in the dugout. The
- 42:02Speaker 3: managers have done this, not Jess, with Scott Servis and
- 42:05Speaker 3: currently Dan Wilson, but even before that, Don Walkamatsu, Bob Melvin,
- 42:10Speaker 3: former major league catchers who became managers. In your experience, Steve,
- 42:14Speaker 3: and your knowledge around the league. What is the dynamic,
- 42:17Speaker 3: what are the role do the GM take, do you
- 42:19Speaker 3: get more hands on in that situation or and what
- 42:22Speaker 3: can you tell us about what you know of Jerry
- 42:24Speaker 3: Depoto's role in these first time managers in the dugout.
- 42:27Speaker 1: Yeah, So it's interesting because there are you know, there
- 42:33Speaker 1: are times when an owner hires a general manager and
- 42:38Speaker 1: it's a young guy or somebody who hasn't been a
- 42:42Speaker 1: GM yet, and it feels like the owner wants to
- 42:45Speaker 1: control the general manager. And I think in some ways
- 42:48Speaker 1: when I got hired with the Mets, it was that
- 42:50Speaker 1: way a little bit. I think I went from Joe mckilfain,
- 42:53Speaker 1: who was an experienced guy, to me coming in, and
- 42:55Speaker 1: I think there was a bit of I'll have more
- 42:58Speaker 1: input into the baseball when I get somebody who's young
- 43:01Speaker 1: and not his experienced.
- 43:03Speaker 5: Uh.
- 43:04Speaker 1: And then we've seen when it comes to managers, you know,
- 43:07Speaker 1: with the change and analytics and you know the explosion
- 43:12Speaker 1: of analytics and the metrics that are in the game,
- 43:14Speaker 1: we've seen more and more where general managers and front
- 43:19Speaker 1: offices funnel down information to the manager and the coaches,
- 43:24Speaker 1: And you know, I think there's a belief that it's
- 43:26Speaker 1: more readily acceptable when somebody's getting their first job that
- 43:31Speaker 1: maybe they're not so inclined to to, you know, love
- 43:35Speaker 1: the analytics.
- 43:37Speaker 4: I believe he cut out that I might have been back.
- 43:39Speaker 3: He might be in the halland tunnel. If he's going
- 43:40Speaker 3: from New York City to set from New Jersey, that
- 43:45Speaker 3: could be what he's doing. We're talking with Steve Phillips
- 43:47Speaker 3: from Major League Baseball Network and Serious XMMLBB, an analyst.
- 43:51Speaker 3: He's a former New York Mets general manager. He's talking
- 43:53Speaker 3: about the first time managers in the dugout and the
- 43:56Speaker 3: relationship with a general manage. He was in mid sentence
- 43:59Speaker 3: talking about the analytics role in all of this. Court
- 44:02Speaker 3: Jerry to Poto and Justin Hollander are all in on analytics.
- 44:06Speaker 3: The hand it is how they use a bullpen, how
- 44:09Speaker 3: they use relievers. That is what they do. And they
- 44:14Speaker 3: are numbers driven. And we've said it and talked about
- 44:16Speaker 3: it here that it is very convenient to push the
- 44:18Speaker 3: numbers from up high down onto the dugout when you
- 44:21Speaker 3: have a first time manager in the dugout. Of course,
- 44:24Speaker 3: Dan Wilson was hand picked by Jerry Depoto and specifically
- 44:28Speaker 3: put to Poto for this role, and Scott Servis was
- 44:32Speaker 3: largely picked the same way they'd worked together with the Angels,
- 44:35Speaker 3: and he knew he would have yes men in the
- 44:38Speaker 3: dugout who would do what the analytics staff and the
- 44:42Speaker 3: president baseball operas and the general manager want to do.
- 44:44Speaker 3: So it's interesting to explore how baseball has changed. I'd
- 44:48Speaker 3: mentioned to Jim Bowden the other day from Majorgue baseball
- 44:50Speaker 3: general manager as well, about how when I covered ball,
- 44:54Speaker 3: the general manager didn't have daily meetings with the manager.
- 44:56Speaker 3: Billy Bean didn't have daily meetings with or how about
- 44:59Speaker 3: how they're going to use pitchers and whatnot, and how
- 45:03Speaker 3: who's available tonight? And that's what the pitching coach and
- 45:06Speaker 3: the bench coach and the manager used to do. Steve Phillips, im, sorry,
- 45:09Speaker 3: you must have been the hall in tunnel something, but
- 45:11Speaker 3: you were talking to us about a first time manager
- 45:15Speaker 3: and the general manager relationship. But with now the analytics
- 45:18Speaker 3: realm in baseball, yeah, you know, with the.
- 45:20Speaker 1: Analytics there, I think there's you know, it's easier to
- 45:25Speaker 1: sell information and to get the manager to be malleable
- 45:29Speaker 1: because they all want that first job, right. Everybody wants
- 45:33Speaker 1: to be a manager. Everybody wants to be a general manager,
- 45:35Speaker 1: and sometimes you're willing to accept a system and a
- 45:38Speaker 1: structure that might not feel the most comfortable, but you're
- 45:41Speaker 1: willing to put up with it because you loved the
- 45:43Speaker 1: job and to be able to get it now.
- 45:45Speaker 3: You know.
- 45:45Speaker 1: I would say that that the managers that the Mirrors
- 45:48Speaker 1: have had, even if they were first time managers, I think,
- 45:52Speaker 1: have a different level of credibility. You know. For instance,
- 45:57Speaker 1: you know, the Mets said Carlos Mendoza, and you know
- 46:00Speaker 1: he wasn't a big league player, uh, and therefore, you
- 46:04Speaker 1: know when the front office wants to control him.
- 46:06Speaker 3: A little bit.
- 46:06Speaker 1: I think it's a little different for Dan Wilson and
- 46:08Speaker 1: a Scott certain Weill service and managed before, but uh,
- 46:12Speaker 1: you know, walk him on to another's there there, they've
- 46:14Speaker 1: had a level of credibility to where I think it
- 46:16Speaker 1: is more of an equal relationship in a back and
- 46:19Speaker 1: forth with it all. But that being said, I think
- 46:21Speaker 1: that that you know, Jerry Depoto and and has a
- 46:26Speaker 1: strong opinion about how to win games and how to
- 46:29Speaker 1: go about doing it. Uh, And you know, I think
- 46:32Speaker 1: that in the long run, you know, he gives Dan
- 46:34Speaker 1: Wilson the information that he thinks is necessary, but he
- 46:38Speaker 1: left Dan Wilson make the decision. So I interviewed Dan
- 46:41Speaker 1: at the winter meetings, and I have to say, like
- 46:43Speaker 1: I came away very very uh impressed by his own
- 46:47Speaker 1: self evaluation. If you know, I didn't do everything right, say,
- 46:53Speaker 1: you know, the information that came from the front office
- 46:55Speaker 1: led me to make a decision that wasn't right, he said,
- 46:57Speaker 1: I I probably could have done a couple of things
- 46:59Speaker 1: different than what I did. And so I feel like
- 47:03Speaker 1: that he has enough freedom to within getting that information
- 47:08Speaker 1: to make the decisions that he wants to make during
- 47:11Speaker 1: the course of the game. Now doesn't mean after the
- 47:13Speaker 1: game they won't talk about him. It doesn't mean maybe
- 47:15Speaker 1: there won't be some pushback and criticism. But I don't
- 47:18Speaker 1: feel like he is one d Kyle Kow to a
- 47:21Speaker 1: front office. Nor do I feel like Jerry to Poto
- 47:24Speaker 1: is as dominating as maybe some of the other general
- 47:27Speaker 1: managers are of I need you to do it this
- 47:29Speaker 1: way because I'm in charge and you're just sort of
- 47:32Speaker 1: my you know, sitting in that spot for me to
- 47:36Speaker 1: implement my plan to manage the game.
- 47:39Speaker 3: I think it's indisputable. Steve Phillips said, the piggyback situation
- 47:44Speaker 3: that the Mariners are doing somewhat unprecedented probably has to
- 47:48Speaker 3: be coming from the top, from Jerry to Poto and
- 47:50Speaker 3: or Justin Hollander and the analytics of that, or on
- 47:53Speaker 3: with an eye on the trademarket on what to do
- 47:54Speaker 3: with Luis Castio in his contractor what do you view
- 47:58Speaker 3: of all that from a Major League Baseball perspective? Is
- 48:02Speaker 3: this sustainable? Do you keep Luis Castillo and you keep
- 48:06Speaker 3: your six starters, or do you eventually, as Jim Bowden
- 48:10Speaker 3: told us the other day, you got to put Castile
- 48:12Speaker 3: or the least effective starter into the bullpen and go
- 48:14Speaker 3: and just go, just do it.
- 48:17Speaker 1: Yeah, So I am okay with piggyback options, you know,
- 48:22Speaker 1: for a period of time, and I'm okay with a
- 48:25Speaker 1: six man rotation for a period of time. I think
- 48:28Speaker 1: the one thing that we all learned from the Dodgers
- 48:31Speaker 1: last year that the goal is get to the playoffs.
- 48:36Speaker 1: Try to win your division, get to the playoffs in
- 48:38Speaker 1: the regular season, and then once you get there, you
- 48:41Speaker 1: want to make sure that your horses are ready to
- 48:43Speaker 1: be their best in the playoffs. And you know, the Dodgers,
- 48:46Speaker 1: therefore they probably could have gunned it to win one
- 48:49Speaker 1: hundred games last year, but they managed it in a
- 48:51Speaker 1: way that they wanted to make sure that, you know,
- 48:55Speaker 1: Okama or that Yamamoto and Sasaki and and and pictures
- 49:00Speaker 1: were healthy and ready to go in the postseason. And
- 49:04Speaker 1: and I think that that for shealle, I think that's
- 49:07Speaker 1: important too. I do and and and so I do
- 49:11Speaker 1: you know, look, I think that's one that what you do.
- 49:14Speaker 1: There's a way as a general manager, uh, to say,
- 49:18Speaker 1: this is what I think we should do. A piggyback
- 49:21Speaker 1: situation here where I think we're going to manage this
- 49:23Speaker 1: everything right and it's gonna be the best thing for
- 49:25Speaker 1: us in the long run.
- 49:26Speaker 3: What do you think?
- 49:27Speaker 1: And it's kind of hard to have point to disagree, right,
- 49:30Speaker 1: So I'm not telling them what to do. I'm telling
- 49:32Speaker 1: them what I think, but I'm portraying it in a
- 49:35Speaker 1: way of this is really what I think we ought
- 49:38Speaker 1: to do. What do you think?
- 49:39Speaker 5: Uh?
- 49:40Speaker 1: And so you know, it's kind of what our wife
- 49:42Speaker 1: tell us every once in a while, is that you know,
- 49:45Speaker 1: your opinion matters to me only if it agrees with mine.
- 49:48Speaker 3: Uh.
- 49:49Speaker 1: And so like I've lived that, and so you know,
- 49:51Speaker 1: I think that that, you know, I think that that
- 49:55Speaker 1: managing though the regular season with an eye end the postseason,
- 49:59Speaker 1: especially your team like Seattle, is an important thing to do.
- 50:03Speaker 1: And and I want everybody to be fresh and healthy
- 50:06Speaker 1: and at their best. And I'm not a fan of
- 50:09Speaker 1: shutting a guy down for two weeks and then starting
- 50:12Speaker 1: them up again.
- 50:13Speaker 5: Uh.
- 50:14Speaker 1: And I stn't like that. I think that you lose
- 50:16Speaker 1: the rhythm, and everybody loses the rhythm. I would rather
- 50:21Speaker 1: save innings game by game and situation by situation as
- 50:28Speaker 1: opposed to a shutdown of anybody. So, you know, it's
- 50:31Speaker 1: a you know, we always say that you can't have
- 50:33Speaker 1: enough pitching, and then sometimes it's kind of a problem.
- 50:36Speaker 1: But the players need to understand that the team is
- 50:39Speaker 1: trying to do, you know, the front office and the
- 50:42Speaker 1: manager trying to do what they think is the right
- 50:44Speaker 1: thing to win as many games as possible and to
- 50:47Speaker 1: put them in the best situation to win a World Series.
- 50:50Speaker 1: There's no other motive in it. And and so I
- 50:54Speaker 1: think players, if they actually have the right mindset, they
- 50:57Speaker 1: can manage it and and navigate through any structure that
- 51:02Speaker 1: the team puts in place. If they get a little
- 51:04Speaker 1: selfish and they get a little like, well, I need
- 51:06Speaker 1: this for me and I need that for me. Uh,
- 51:09Speaker 1: then it becomes a problem.
- 51:10Speaker 7: I know this.
- 51:12Speaker 1: The Dodgers go with the six man rotation and nobody's
- 51:15Speaker 1: whining there, right, nobody's whining and working through it. They
- 51:19Speaker 1: just they find a way because they want they have
- 51:21Speaker 1: about Tani and the yellow Moto. They try to protect
- 51:24Speaker 1: their arms, and everybody seems okay with it. But in
- 51:27Speaker 1: other places, when they're not as good as what the
- 51:29Speaker 1: Dodgers have, people have a problem with it.
- 51:31Speaker 3: And so I don't get that you say you're in
- 51:34Speaker 3: favor of it, Phillips as a piggybaging for a time.
- 51:37Speaker 3: For how long is that time? Could they could the
- 51:39Speaker 3: Mariners roll with this health willing the rest of the
- 51:42Speaker 3: season and then, as you mentioned, produce the rotation for
- 51:45Speaker 3: the playoffs.
- 51:46Speaker 1: Yeah, so I would rather like, I'm okay doing it
- 51:49Speaker 1: for a period of time, but I'd rather get to
- 51:51Speaker 1: the six man rotation myself. I would listen, give a
- 51:55Speaker 1: guy a second side session between starts to really get
- 51:59Speaker 1: a feel for his stuff and to work on the
- 52:02Speaker 1: things he needs to work on for his mechanics and
- 52:04Speaker 1: to get his mindset right and take an extra day
- 52:07Speaker 1: of prep and scouting for who we're going to face
- 52:10Speaker 1: this time around, and put our plan together. And so
- 52:13Speaker 1: I think the combination of the six man and the
- 52:16Speaker 1: piggyback worked. I think depending upon the schedule and you know,
- 52:20Speaker 1: the off days and how that balances itself, I think
- 52:23Speaker 1: you can move between the two of those. But I
- 52:27Speaker 1: think that that, you know, I just think that that
- 52:30Speaker 1: there's a way to do it, and you need buy
- 52:32Speaker 1: in from the players, and I think that's where I
- 52:35Speaker 1: think maybe sales pitch did not go the way it
- 52:38Speaker 1: should have right that they didn't sit without everybody, and
- 52:42Speaker 1: it's to me it was more of a communication problem
- 52:45Speaker 1: than a utilization problem, and they needed to get buy
- 52:49Speaker 1: in because it works in other places with bigger names
- 52:53Speaker 1: when and they get buy in for it.
- 52:55Speaker 5: See PHILIPSMLB Network, Serious XM former colleague of mine, all
- 52:59Speaker 5: the way back Bristol, Steve, thanks for joining us again
- 53:02Speaker 5: switching off a pitching. A lot is being made of
- 53:05Speaker 5: cal Raley and his performance this year. Obviously, Julio has
- 53:09Speaker 5: been up and down, but we kind of believe in him.
- 53:12Speaker 5: Where do you see cal Raley in his offensive output
- 53:15Speaker 5: for the rest of this season?
- 53:16Speaker 4: Obviously is a tremendous catcher. Do you think he can
- 53:19Speaker 4: get it back at the plate?
- 53:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I think at some point you will.
- 53:23Speaker 3: I do.
- 53:23Speaker 1: I think he'll get back into a rhythm uh and
- 53:26Speaker 1: get going again. I think. But I do think that.
- 53:28Speaker 1: You know, when you hit that many home runs of
- 53:30Speaker 1: the year, there's an expectation of the next year, or
- 53:33Speaker 1: let me do it again, or let me do let
- 53:34Speaker 1: me get one more, two more, uh and take it
- 53:37Speaker 1: even further U. And I remember asking players that you
- 53:42Speaker 1: know were cy Young Award winners MVP, like what do
- 53:45Speaker 1: you do the next to what do you work on
- 53:48Speaker 1: when you were the best? Like you were the best
- 53:50Speaker 1: last year? So like what is it that you're working
- 53:52Speaker 1: on to try to be better when you are already
- 53:54Speaker 1: the best? And they're like, wow, consistency. I can always
- 53:57Speaker 1: try to do something a little bit better. He needs
- 53:59Speaker 1: to get back a rhythm. He will. Hitting is about confidence,
- 54:02Speaker 1: It's about a rhythm. You know, he's he's been beating
- 54:05Speaker 1: up a little bit physically, and he's beating up a
- 54:07Speaker 1: little bit mentally right now, you know, And when you're
- 54:09Speaker 1: struggling and you start trying to hit, it compounds the
- 54:15Speaker 1: problem Baseball is not a game to try harder. I mean, yes,
- 54:19Speaker 1: when you run the bases and you're you're in the outfield,
- 54:22Speaker 1: you're gonna run a ball down of the gap, that
- 54:24Speaker 1: sort of thing. Well, it comes to hitting, you've got
- 54:27Speaker 1: to relax more, not try harder. It's it's intensity without tension.
- 54:33Speaker 1: And it's a tough thing to do because when you
- 54:35Speaker 1: look at the scoreboard and you see your batting average
- 54:37Speaker 1: starting with a one sixty something or one eighty something,
- 54:41Speaker 1: the pressure you put on yourself and you think, let
- 54:43Speaker 1: me get three hits with one swing of the back,
- 54:45Speaker 1: let me hit three home runs with one that I
- 54:48Speaker 1: can hit out of the ballpark. And you put so
- 54:50Speaker 1: much pressure on yourself that when you try too hard,
- 54:53Speaker 1: you try to hit the ball soon as it comes
- 54:55Speaker 1: out of the pitcher's hand, you jump at the plate.
- 54:57Speaker 1: You think, Okay, I've got to try to hit this
- 54:59Speaker 1: right now. Whenever you think to yourself, I have to
- 55:02Speaker 1: get a hit, you're in trouble. And so you've got
- 55:05Speaker 1: to go back to that plan and the basics, and
- 55:07Speaker 1: it takes some time, and there's a lot of different
- 55:09Speaker 1: things you can do. You can give a guy a
- 55:10Speaker 1: day off, two days off, three days off, you can,
- 55:14Speaker 1: you know, extra hitting, no hitting, move a spot in
- 55:17Speaker 1: the lineup. There's a lot of things that managers try
- 55:19Speaker 1: to do to trigger that jump start. But at some
- 55:22Speaker 1: point he'll get a flare that'll fall in, that'll hit
- 55:25Speaker 1: one in the gap, and the next thing you know,
- 55:27Speaker 1: he's runs over the wall. He's got a three hit
- 55:29Speaker 1: day with a whole run, and then the next day
- 55:31Speaker 1: he'll get one and he's going to get back into
- 55:33Speaker 1: that rhythm.
- 55:34Speaker 4: C Philip's joining us.
- 55:35Speaker 5: I have a follow up, not just specific to one player,
- 55:38Speaker 5: but the Mariners offensive output as a whole, as they
- 55:41Speaker 5: spent fourteen games not hitting more than three runs, and
- 55:44Speaker 5: then all of a sudden, the Angels come to town. Now,
- 55:46Speaker 5: granted it is the Angels. They score six runs in
- 55:49Speaker 5: Game one and eight runs in Game two. Now, like
- 55:52Speaker 5: I said, it's the Angels, But what kind of confidence,
- 55:55Speaker 5: as you talked about the mental side of batting, what
- 55:57Speaker 5: kind of confidence can that do to kind of say
- 56:00Speaker 5: all the bats into the rest of the season.
- 56:03Speaker 1: Yeah, you know what's interesting is is that you know,
- 56:06Speaker 1: you're right, we can look at it like, well, you know,
- 56:08Speaker 1: it's the Angels. Everybody hits them. On the other hand
- 56:11Speaker 1: as a hitter, just getting hits, just getting on base,
- 56:15Speaker 1: just putting runs up on the board starts to make
- 56:18Speaker 1: you feel better and it can change the dynamic of
- 56:21Speaker 1: the at bats. You know, if you can get a
- 56:23Speaker 1: run on the board early, then it's like, Okay, I
- 56:26Speaker 1: don't have to get a hit right here. I can
- 56:28Speaker 1: just sort of play the situation. I can let you know,
- 56:31Speaker 1: read the picture and read my my at bat and
- 56:34Speaker 1: go out there and try to produce without trying to
- 56:36Speaker 1: do too much. And so it can help, right but
- 56:39Speaker 1: it's going to come down to the top of the order.
- 56:42Speaker 1: Getting it started early in the game and putting up
- 56:46Speaker 1: runs early and trying to get the pictures can feel
- 56:50Speaker 1: like they can attack the hitters in the zone because
- 56:53Speaker 1: a solo home run is not going to beat you.
- 56:55Speaker 1: Then the hitters can start to take more relaxed at bats,
- 56:58Speaker 1: and then you start to get into that realm and
- 57:01Speaker 1: that confidence level that that can grow and connect from
- 57:03Speaker 1: one hit to the next. So so you know, look,
- 57:06Speaker 1: it's got to start, and a lot of times I'll
- 57:09Speaker 1: tell you it starts with taking walks. That when a
- 57:12Speaker 1: lineup doesn't swing, it pitches out of the zone and
- 57:16Speaker 1: like a rally ends because the guy chases and pits
- 57:18Speaker 1: out of the zone, that bounces in the dirt. Ending's
- 57:20Speaker 1: over and it's just such a deflation. But you start
- 57:24Speaker 1: to just only swing it straight, don't chase out of
- 57:28Speaker 1: the zone, put the ball in play. Have some good
- 57:31Speaker 1: situational hitting that when you get an opportunity, you get
- 57:34Speaker 1: them on second base, you get them over, and you
- 57:36Speaker 1: get them in. Then you start to realize there's a
- 57:38Speaker 1: lot of different ways you can score.
- 57:41Speaker 3: Steve Phillips orm Major General Manage MLB Network, joining us
- 57:45Speaker 3: on his way into Secaucus and MLB Network show tonight
- 57:48Speaker 3: Steve Tomorrow will be one month exactly before the trade deadline.
- 57:52Speaker 3: What do you think the Tigers do with Terry Scoble
- 57:55Speaker 3: any right handed bats the Mariners could potentially get, They've
- 57:58Speaker 3: made it known they're in the market for that as
- 58:01Speaker 3: well as veteran sets. Yeah.
- 58:04Speaker 1: So, so right now it's going to be such an
- 58:06Speaker 1: odd trade deadline, and it's far too premature to really
- 58:09Speaker 1: predict what's going to happen, because you know, I think
- 58:12Speaker 1: the last I look, there were thirteen teams in the
- 58:15Speaker 1: America League within six and a half games of a
- 58:18Speaker 1: playoff spot, and there were twelve teams in the America
- 58:20Speaker 1: League or in the National League within six games of
- 58:23Speaker 1: a playoff spot, and so like everybody feels like they're
- 58:26Speaker 1: in it a little bit right now. And so you know,
- 58:29Speaker 1: if you're within three or four games at the deadline,
- 58:32Speaker 1: or you know, the several days before the deadline, then
- 58:35Speaker 1: you're probably more inclined to be a buyer or stand
- 58:38Speaker 1: pat uh. And I think this is a year where
- 58:40Speaker 1: we might see teams that are four and a half
- 58:43Speaker 1: games out. One will buy, the other will sell, and
- 58:46Speaker 1: and it just depends upon how they look at themselves,
- 58:49Speaker 1: how they look at the league, where are they in
- 58:51Speaker 1: a time and place. So Scoogle, Uh, you know, the
- 58:54Speaker 1: Tigers right now are like six and a half games out,
- 58:57Speaker 1: and but they're starting to play better. They just swept
- 59:00Speaker 1: the Yankees. And although the Yankees are limping around with
- 59:03Speaker 1: all the injuries they have right now in food poisoning
- 59:06Speaker 1: impacting their team, to the postgame spread the other night
- 59:09Speaker 1: must have been really horrible because all the Yankees got sick.
- 59:13Speaker 1: But you know, I think that for the Tigers, the
- 59:16Speaker 1: ideally they'd like to keep them and make a run
- 59:18Speaker 1: for it. But if they're four and a half games
- 59:21Speaker 1: out and there's you know, not only that, but five
- 59:24Speaker 1: teams in front of them or four teams in front
- 59:26Speaker 1: of them. Then I think they might consider moving them.
- 59:29Speaker 1: I think they would have to, you know, I just
- 59:31Speaker 1: think it was it was, you know, baseball malpractice. When
- 59:35Speaker 1: the Angels did not trade O'kani a couple of years ago.
- 59:38Speaker 1: It just made no sense to me. One they I
- 59:41Speaker 1: didn't think they were going to make the playoffs too,
- 59:43Speaker 1: they weren't going to be able to sign Otani for
- 59:45Speaker 1: the long term, and Ardie Moreno, the owner, thought well,
- 59:48Speaker 1: I'm still making a lot of money every time he pitches,
- 59:50Speaker 1: so I'm just going to keep them, and then he
- 59:52Speaker 1: ended up getting hurt. But I think that, yeah, for
- 59:55Speaker 1: the franchise, I think they have to consider doing something now.
- 59:58Speaker 1: I read a report that the Dodgers and Yankees would
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: most likely not be in on scooball that they're satisfied
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: with their pitching and they're gonna look in a different direction.
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: I would think that everybody should at least kick the
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: tires on it. But I think Atlanta, the Chicago Cubs
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: would definitely be in on on something like that. And
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: obviously I know he's from you know, he went to
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: the University of Seattle. Although I think the Marators you know,
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: probably will focus more on offense, kind of what we've
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: seen the last couple of years. Uh, in a right
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: handed bat you know, you're looking at the the res
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: Hoskins of the world.
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: You know, if if San Diego falls out of it,
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: You've had ty Franz before. But ty France is actually
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: swinging the bat well this year. And but what we
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: might also see is teams that are both are buyers
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: and practicing arbitrage where they're gonna buy and sell or
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: they're gonna rob Peter to pay Paul say listening, you've
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: got enough offense, I need pitching. Uh, let me trade.
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: I don't know that that those teams, though, won't be
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: looking for prospects in return, which is where I think
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: Siani probably won't want to give up any of the
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: pitching to add offense. They're gonna want to deal prospects,
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: and that means they're really going to have to only
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: focus on those teams who are out of it or
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: are completely going to be sellers and who aren't looking
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: to buy.
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: Steve Phillips, I know you're a busy man and route
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: to your job at Major League Network, Basic Baseball Network.
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: Appreciate it.
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: Have a great holiday weekend. It's good to catch up
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: with again, sir.
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: No probada, my pleasure.
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: Have a great day. Steve Phillips talking to us from
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: New Jersey on his way into MLB Network studios. We
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: will be on the here tonight. He says he's all
- 1:01:35Speaker 3: for a six man rotation, he's all for pickyback, and
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: he says it's important to prepare your pitching staff for
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: the postseason, and that's what he thinks the Mariners are doing.
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: He said, the Dodgers do it with Yamamoto and Otani,
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: and no one says a word. Of course, the Dodgers
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: in the World Series every year, have a history of it.
- 1:01:50Speaker 4: Really question.
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: Yeah, it was a fifty year history that goes back here.
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: That's a little bit different than the Dodgers. He also
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: mentions the possibility of getting right hand bats, and he
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: mentioned Ty France. I was like, oh, we we are
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: we gonna get Ty Franz back again.
- 1:02:08Speaker 4: That would be interesting, that.
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: Would be it would be like anyo smares Redo speaking
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: of the Reds are out of it? What about Suarez, why.
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: You probably get him pretty expensively.
- 1:02:20Speaker 3: He authored one of the greatest moments in Seattle Mayer's
- 1:02:23Speaker 3: history last October with that home running, next tra innings
- 1:02:26Speaker 3: in the Division Series and against the tray. Who knows,
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: we didn't think Swars would come back last time. What
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: he did pretty swimmingly as well. Four nine four five
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: one on the takabadats text sign your reaction to that,
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: and if you think the Mariners, if he Steve Phillips
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: is full of beans, that the Mariners six man rotation
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: and piggybacking should continue, and he's all he's okay with it.
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: We'll read back at texts next and then Ian Finessel
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: join us. Tellinsson his show from twelve until three on

- 1:04:00Speaker 3: Yes, like the team that beat Bosnia hers Gevina last
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: night two nothing in Santa Clara in the round of
- 1:04:05Speaker 3: thirty two, only the second knockout Winever but flow Velligan,
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: Perhaps they're not. Perhaps the most dynamic player on the
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: US team, the one who scored the goal in the
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: first half. He will not play because of a red card.
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: He sustained. The Vaar review made the referee give a
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: red card. Let's put it that way, for a malicious,
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: injurious attempt on a tackle. It was accidental, not intent,
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: but it bent the ankle of the Bosnian player and
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: that is why he will not play because of a
- 1:04:35Speaker 3: red card. He will not play money against Belgium. This
- 1:04:38Speaker 3: is what Mark Klattenberg, Fox Sports, former FIFA referee and
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: World Cup referee who's on the Fox broadcast, had to
- 1:04:45Speaker 3: say about the red card decision.
- 1:04:47Speaker 7: We need to talk to our very own Fox Sports
- 1:04:50Speaker 7: rules analyst, Mark Flattenberg. You're the analyst here, you're the
- 1:04:53Speaker 7: expert here. What can you explain to us this foul
- 1:04:57Speaker 7: and this red card that was given to him?
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:04:59Speaker 8: When I watched this in real speed, I didn't think
- 1:05:01Speaker 8: it was much. I thought it was just a coming
- 1:05:03Speaker 8: together a two players. And what you do see is
- 1:05:07Speaker 8: the Baligan's challenge does catch his opponent on the back
- 1:05:10Speaker 8: of the leg and then when it comes down it
- 1:05:13Speaker 8: catches his ankle and that's when the twist of the
- 1:05:16Speaker 8: bosnia hits Naguvia player's foot twists underneath him. The problem
- 1:05:21Speaker 8: you've got is to reach a criteria of the red card,
- 1:05:23Speaker 8: it has to be some speed, there has to be
- 1:05:25Speaker 8: some force, and there has.
- 1:05:26Speaker 6: To be some malice. This lacked that.
- 1:05:29Speaker 8: But what it does have, which is what the element
- 1:05:31Speaker 8: of the VRS hiding behind, is it endangers the safety
- 1:05:35Speaker 8: of the opponent because if that foot on foot challenge,
- 1:05:38Speaker 8: which could have acted and ended with.
- 1:05:41Speaker 4: A broken ankle.
- 1:05:42Speaker 8: So what they've done is they've looked at the consequence
- 1:05:44Speaker 8: of the challenge. However, in my opinion, this didn't endanger
- 1:05:49Speaker 8: the safety of opponent. Balagin doesn't even look for the foul.
- 1:05:52Speaker 8: It's one of them where it happens in a split second,
- 1:05:54Speaker 8: he puts his foot down and catches his opponent. It
- 1:05:58Speaker 8: was an accidental challenge and for me, did not reach
- 1:06:00Speaker 8: the criteria of a red card, and it shouldn't have
- 1:06:02Speaker 8: been a bar in avention.
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: You will probably not be surprised to hear that Mauricio Pocaccino,
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: the United States coach, has the same type of opinion.
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: For me, never a redcard watching after Onte, and never
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: was the intention to step up of the of the player.
- 1:06:25Speaker 5: That was.
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: A normal election in football. That happened because by accident,
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: and it's never intentional. That is why for me, never,
- 1:06:35Speaker 3: it's never redcard. So Jason on two of six on
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: the to come the tax line four nine four or
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: five one ask So they cannot reverse the red card,
- 1:06:45Speaker 3: well not typically a Their decision is final unless a
- 1:06:52Speaker 3: team wants to in a national soccer program wants to
- 1:06:55Speaker 3: challenge it to the FIFA Discipline Committee, which is like
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: a tribunal above and with no indication as of today,
- 1:07:04Speaker 3: the United States is going to do that. I mean,
- 1:07:07Speaker 3: one thing the United States could do is just go
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: out and beat Belgium without Bauligun, but it may.
- 1:07:12Speaker 4: Be hard to saw the second half one man down
- 1:07:15Speaker 4: and without him.
- 1:07:16Speaker 3: Correct and they still, as we talk with Andrews, they
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: still played with the pedal down and they didn't just
- 1:07:19Speaker 3: park the bus, as the soccer term is, and defend
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: and push everyone behind the ball. They went out and
- 1:07:25Speaker 3: ended up getting a foul call at the top of
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: the box that Malik Tillman converted into the goal and
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: the eighty second mint on the free kick that clinched
- 1:07:33Speaker 3: a win. And we talked about Peppy's probably going to
- 1:07:36Speaker 3: start at the top, and there's the striker Balagun not
- 1:07:40Speaker 3: in there on Monday against Belgium, and Peppy played really
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: well when he played with two at the top when
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: Christian Polisic was out for the US match against Australia
- 1:07:49Speaker 3: here in Seattle. The US won that one too nothing.
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: So this is why you have a twenty six man roster.
- 1:07:57Speaker 3: We'll see if that's how Pochettino plays it with Peppi
- 1:08:00Speaker 3: again at the top, and I think that's what's going
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: to actually happen. Also on the two oh six, the
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: game Time ticket app offered zone ticketing for Seahawks and
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: Mariners games and they work great.
- 1:08:10Speaker 4: Well, that's good to know.
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: It is good to know my son uses game Time
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: and thinks that's the way to go. On secondary ticket sites,
- 1:08:17Speaker 3: we mentioned how FIFA's site in the World Cup in
- 1:08:20Speaker 3: general has been rife with ticket scams and tickets promised
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: but not delivered. And again, if you don't know the
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: ticket situations, FIFA controls them, and even the secondary sites,
- 1:08:31Speaker 3: you won't get your tickets from the FIFA app, even
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: buying on a secondary site until sometimes an hour before
- 1:08:37Speaker 3: the match, which is quite unnerving. If you spent thousands
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: of dollars, it's twenty three hundred dollars on the secondary
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: site to get in to the US Belgium game on
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: Monday five pm at Lumenfield. As of right now, there
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: are a few of you who do not agree with
- 1:08:51Speaker 3: Steve Phillips. We decided him on the show. The former
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: minute general manager two to Fight three says Ty France
- 1:08:57Speaker 3: is the slowest individual Major League history. Please for the
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: everything Holy No, I would literally take back Dylan Moore
- 1:09:04Speaker 3: over him.
- 1:09:05Speaker 4: Well, that's a declarative statement.
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: Dylan Moore catches strays Yeah right, Duo sex, nothing bad
- 1:09:12Speaker 3: happens when we get Suarez. He always unites the team
- 1:09:16Speaker 3: in the city. Bring him back again, please, I would
- 1:09:19Speaker 3: vote yes, great vibes only.
- 1:09:25Speaker 5: I just love that they kept that sign up in
- 1:09:27Speaker 5: the clubhouse in his absence, Yes, when he wasn't there,
- 1:09:30Speaker 5: like they they need that. I still remember I think
- 1:09:34Speaker 5: it was not last year, but the year before, Ian
- 1:09:37Speaker 5: telling a story about Gino having a really rough game
- 1:09:41Speaker 5: at the plate. He was just he was not there,
- 1:09:43Speaker 5: and that Scott Service went over to him and asked
- 1:09:47Speaker 5: told him that.
- 1:09:48Speaker 4: He needs him to be that guy.
- 1:09:49Speaker 5: He needs him to be and it's hard that you know,
- 1:09:52Speaker 5: see Phillips referenced the mental side of the game.
- 1:09:54Speaker 4: But he went up to him and said, I need
- 1:09:56Speaker 4: you to pick this team up.
- 1:09:57Speaker 5: And he just went out there and was the heart
- 1:10:01Speaker 5: of the clubhouse and they ended up coming back and winning,
- 1:10:03Speaker 5: and I thought that was a great story.
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: Heyer Haeneo Suarez is banning two oh eight right now
- 1:10:09Speaker 3: for the Reds. He has eight home runs two six
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: excuse me, his eight home runs on the season twenty
- 1:10:16Speaker 3: nine RBI. The Reds are subterranean. Their season's already over,
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: and everybody in Cincinnati and Ohio is complaining to hear
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: the Reds again out before the July fourth holiday. You
- 1:10:28Speaker 3: would think they're gonna be sellers. They are bottom of
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: the ANL Central, fourteen and a half games out and
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: seven games under five seven games under five hundred puts
- 1:10:37Speaker 3: you're writing contention in the AL West. But we mentioned
- 1:10:40Speaker 3: other Angels are thirteen fourteen under and they're only six
- 1:10:44Speaker 3: back in the division. The Mariners are tied with the
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: Texas Rangers atop the American League West. A top is
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: a relative term, but they're better than anybody else, even
- 1:10:52Speaker 3: though they're just at five hundred. And they played a
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: night at the Yard against the Angels to finish that
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: splinter three games series, the first two games before the
- 1:11:01Speaker 3: World Cup match yesterday, and then they took yesterday off
- 1:11:03Speaker 3: because of the World Cup that was going on downtown.
- 1:11:05Speaker 3: But six forty tonight and then the Toronto Blue Jays
- 1:11:08Speaker 3: come in for the weekend Friday, Saturday and Sunday and
- 1:11:12Speaker 3: the annual BC influx of fans there. There are a
- 1:11:16Speaker 3: lot of you on the text line four nine, four
- 1:11:17Speaker 3: y five one and to come a to dodge text line.
- 1:11:19Speaker 3: Who appreciate soccer and what it is done? Some of
- 1:11:21Speaker 3: you say you're not even soccer fans that you appreciate it.
- 1:11:24Speaker 3: Two six says Anders said it perfectly with an exclamation point.
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: I was a non believer, but now I set my
- 1:11:29Speaker 3: schedule and make sure I can watch soccer. I don't
- 1:11:31Speaker 3: understand it, but it can be exciting. Let's all make
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: Seattle look good and just roll with the day. Monday,
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: go Usa.
- 1:11:38Speaker 4: I see.
- 1:11:38Speaker 9: I love that.
- 1:11:39Speaker 4: And you don't need to be a soccer expert.
- 1:11:41Speaker 5: You don't need to have played, you don't need to
- 1:11:43Speaker 5: have coached, and you don't need to be a super
- 1:11:44Speaker 5: Sounders fan either.
- 1:11:46Speaker 4: This is a national event and it's right here.
- 1:11:49Speaker 3: So I love it.
- 1:11:51Speaker 5: I love it so much. It reminds me of the Olympics.
- 1:11:53Speaker 5: Do I know anything about ice skating?
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: True, but I love to watch it.
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: You're a Luja expert.
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: Just went, oh, yeah, I ride very fast at first?
- 1:12:05Speaker 4: Yeah exactly? Ride or fall?
- 1:12:09Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 1:12:11Speaker 3: Just two five three says this just shows how soccer
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: is a joke of a sport as it is currently
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: the fact that you have to play with fewer players
- 1:12:18Speaker 3: is a joke of a rule any real sport would
- 1:12:21Speaker 3: allow an immediate substitute for a player ejection.
- 1:12:23Speaker 4: Oh, we have the power play in hockey.
- 1:12:25Speaker 3: That's true for two minutes. I remember five.
- 1:12:27Speaker 4: I mean still you're playing a man down.
- 1:12:29Speaker 3: Two six seven, Miss Yellows. The one on Polistic was
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: blating up the left side, and I remember that that
- 1:12:33Speaker 3: should have been a yellow card. There's a hip in leg,
- 1:12:36Speaker 3: check out of bounds, not a red. Was zero and
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: ten on Balligan. That free kick goal by Tilman was elite,
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: not getting enough talk. That bought was barely That wall
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: for Bosni was barely seven yards. Another botch job by Klaus.
- 1:12:53Speaker 3: The one minute foul in Senegal? What was that var
- 1:12:57Speaker 3: Is meant for? What was that would be was meant for?
- 1:13:00Speaker 3: I agree, I don't think that's what var was meant for.
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: I'm sorry, I'm misreading that. The one hundred and twenty
- 1:13:06Speaker 3: minute fouland Senegal was what var Is meant for. He
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: completely filed him, prevented him from tackling the ball, kicking
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: the ball to goal where I just hammed that all up, Marcus.
- 1:13:16Speaker 3: The two O six is the var crew had the
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: underdog saw it as a chance to make some money.
- 1:13:21Speaker 3: I hope that's not true. Ian Fornessa's outside because he
- 1:13:24Speaker 3: has a chance to make some money by working today
- 1:13:26Speaker 3: before the holiday, Mayor Maple Valley, I joined us tels
- 1:13:28Speaker 3: What's on his show twelve to three on ninety three
- 1:13:30Speaker 3: point three KJRFM. Welcome back Greg Bell and just no
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: knack and tire with you happy Fourth of July weekend
- 1:13:55Speaker 3: and Mayor Maple Value Ian Furness is at his second home,
- 1:13:58Speaker 3: maybe third home, crackinghead Quarters thirty two bar and grill
- 1:14:01Speaker 3: attached to it of a northgate at the King County
- 1:14:04Speaker 3: ice Plex. Hello, sir, Hello, are you everything's well? Thank you?
- 1:14:08Speaker 3: After another crazy World Cup day yesterday?
- 1:14:11Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, yeah, good time. So we get another year?
- 1:14:16Speaker 9: Well we had the other game scheduled here. Now we
- 1:14:17Speaker 9: get another game scheduled with the USA, which will be fun, hopefully.
- 1:14:21Speaker 9: Have we heard anything from sixteen hundred Pennsylvania is not coming?
- 1:14:26Speaker 3: The Seattle Times reported this morning that he or JD.
- 1:14:29Speaker 3: Vans are not coming, thank god, thank god.
- 1:14:33Speaker 9: And that's not a political statement. Before all you Orange
- 1:14:35Speaker 9: fans get mad at me for Orange man, it's not
- 1:14:38Speaker 9: that I just was thinking, you know, like what happened
- 1:14:42Speaker 9: at Madison Square Garden yep, where they had to like,
- 1:14:45Speaker 9: because I'll be honest with you, I'm not looking forward
- 1:14:49Speaker 9: to going down there on Monday. I am dreading it
- 1:14:52Speaker 9: with every five ur Come on, well, I just don't
- 1:14:54Speaker 9: want to be there. I want to watch the game,
- 1:14:56Speaker 9: but I don't want to be there because I don't know.
- 1:14:57Speaker 9: I don't I don't know how to get there. Anybody
- 1:14:58Speaker 9: gonna four nine four to five one and let me
- 1:15:00Speaker 9: know how to get there. From Maple Valley. I could
- 1:15:06Speaker 9: get there, I just can't get out.
- 1:15:08Speaker 3: Driving in Park along the road will be closed from
- 1:15:12Speaker 3: Edgar Martinez Way south, First Avenue North. First Avenue South
- 1:15:16Speaker 3: will be above Edgar Martina's Way because it's go go
- 1:15:20Speaker 3: to Occidental Park along the street like I did yesterday
- 1:15:22Speaker 3: for free. Okay, that's that i'd recommend. All right, what's
- 1:15:27Speaker 3: the NHL free agency situation and the Kraken gonna sign
- 1:15:30Speaker 3: anyone of big import? You think?
- 1:15:32Speaker 9: Well, I mean, I don't think that that. When we've
- 1:15:36Speaker 9: talked about this a lot, Greg that the free agent
- 1:15:38Speaker 9: list was awful yep, Like James Schwartz is like, by
- 1:15:42Speaker 9: all accounts, like the eleventh or twelfth best player on
- 1:15:45Speaker 9: the free agent list. And I'll be honest with you,
- 1:15:49Speaker 9: he doesn't have a spot on this now. He signed
- 1:15:51Speaker 9: obviously with I don't He signed for more money than
- 1:15:55Speaker 9: I could ever fathom for a guy that's been off
- 1:15:57Speaker 9: injured and is declining. But like, if that's who is
- 1:16:02Speaker 9: the guy at number ten or eleven on your list,
- 1:16:05Speaker 9: A guy that wouldn't today and the lineup that they
- 1:16:07Speaker 9: have would not really have a spot, Like with Samaskevitch
- 1:16:11Speaker 9: here development of some couple of young guys, he wouldn't
- 1:16:14Speaker 9: have a spot. That's how bad the free agent class
- 1:16:16Speaker 9: this year. The top guys are defensemen, and they're pretty
- 1:16:18Speaker 9: well set at that position, at least at this level.
- 1:16:22Speaker 9: If and Botterrel's said it all along, if they're going
- 1:16:24Speaker 9: to improve this team immediately, it's got to be via trade.
- 1:16:29Speaker 9: So we'll see if he's able to work something out
- 1:16:31Speaker 9: in the next few days. A lot of stuff happens
- 1:16:34Speaker 9: the NHL sort of almost in the NFL, there's that
- 1:16:36Speaker 9: second wave, you know, and there could be trades coming
- 1:16:39Speaker 9: up and all those things.
- 1:16:40Speaker 3: So we'll see.
- 1:16:40Speaker 9: But you know, I would I'd make the argument that
- 1:16:43Speaker 9: they're slightly better than they were a year ago. Right
- 1:16:46Speaker 9: now with Samuth Skevitch coming in and McMahon for the
- 1:16:49Speaker 9: full season. But obviously that was a team that fell
- 1:16:53Speaker 9: short of the playoffs.
- 1:16:54Speaker 3: So we'll see. There's a three year deal that Jayden
- 1:16:57Speaker 3: swore Toda, age thirty four, signed with the Colorado Avalanche.
- 1:17:00Speaker 3: We're three point twenty five million. It's insane. It's insane
- 1:17:03Speaker 3: a year. It's not total a year. He's getting three
- 1:17:06Speaker 3: point two five million year. It's my Ryan Clark, but
- 1:17:08Speaker 3: he reported that, so.
- 1:17:10Speaker 9: Then and then and then what alexiak got a guy
- 1:17:13Speaker 9: that was a healthy scratch for Seattle Dan his last
- 1:17:15Speaker 9: season five mil. Really, But in Vancouver's defense, they're in
- 1:17:22Speaker 9: a situation that half of baseball could find himself in
- 1:17:26Speaker 9: next year. Yes, they're below the basement right now, they're
- 1:17:30Speaker 9: below the floor, so they have to sign guys and
- 1:17:33Speaker 9: pay guys because they're they're below and if they trade
- 1:17:36Speaker 9: Peterson then they're going to be even further. So they
- 1:17:39Speaker 9: that one made sense only from a financial standpoint, and
- 1:17:41Speaker 9: alexiakud for him, he benefits from Vancouver needed to spend money.
- 1:17:44Speaker 9: So because baseball will be funny next year, great, I'm
- 1:17:47Speaker 9: sure you've done that. Exercises, there's only fifth there's fifteen
- 1:17:50Speaker 9: teams above the what will be themposed floor in base
- 1:17:54Speaker 9: in MLB next year, and Seattle is one of those teams,
- 1:17:57Speaker 9: by the way, So that's that that's a that's a
- 1:18:01Speaker 9: problem if you got all of a sudden, you gotta
- 1:18:02Speaker 9: spend money that you don't want to spend just to
- 1:18:04Speaker 9: get to the basement or the floor, whatever you want
- 1:18:05Speaker 9: to call it. We're I mean, obviously the story right
- 1:18:10Speaker 9: the World Cup, the FIFA is crooked. There's no doubt
- 1:18:14Speaker 9: about that. That was, you know, a little known fact.
- 1:18:17Speaker 9: I got my referees license for soccer at the age
- 1:18:20Speaker 9: of fourteen, So I'm there is in no world, especially
- 1:18:27Speaker 9: with how it was executed, because that was wrong. How
- 1:18:29Speaker 9: they executed it is out a red car. Nope, it's
- 1:18:32Speaker 9: just but Seattle, Seattle, keep seeing Seattle. Seattle survives because
- 1:18:36Speaker 9: we get the US bound.
- 1:18:37Speaker 3: Yes, so that's a good thing.
- 1:18:39Speaker 5: Uh.
- 1:18:39Speaker 9: And I know I'm in the minority, buddy, I know
- 1:18:41Speaker 9: I'm in the minority. I love I was, so I'm
- 1:18:44Speaker 9: loving every second of this. I'm just so old now.
- 1:18:46Speaker 9: I don't want to be around those big crowds. But
- 1:18:49Speaker 9: for those that are, I mean, I can't even fathom
- 1:18:51Speaker 9: what it's going to be like on Monday.
- 1:18:53Speaker 3: It's just what a great deal.
- 1:18:54Speaker 9: But we'll talk about that. Obviously, I think the big
- 1:18:56Speaker 9: thing and I know you had Andrews on earlier, Luily,
- 1:18:57Speaker 9: I got the produced. We'll talk about who they replaced
- 1:18:59Speaker 9: him with, yep on Monday, because that's the key. This
- 1:19:03Speaker 9: team should get to the quarterfinals. So we'll talk about that,
- 1:19:06Speaker 9: the last two first round picks for the Crack and
- 1:19:08Speaker 9: we'll join us around twelve twenty or twelve thirty today
- 1:19:11Speaker 9: Chase Reed and Jcobrien. We'll do a little interview with
- 1:19:14Speaker 9: them together. You know, Sarah's talking all things baseball as
- 1:19:17Speaker 9: the ms are back and act.
- 1:19:18Speaker 3: He's making national news with his theories about the dragon baseball,
- 1:19:22Speaker 3: the actual baseball. Yeah yeah, I love that, Huns.
- 1:19:24Speaker 9: We'll get to that, and then we'll get Daniel and Neil.
- 1:19:26Speaker 9: Since we're off tomorrow, daniel' neill join us again on Thursday,
- 1:19:29Speaker 9: two o'clock today.
- 1:19:29Speaker 3: So thank you, sir. Happy have Fourth of July weekend
- 1:19:32Speaker 3: to you and family. Yeah, thank you. H Anderson Hurst
- 1:19:35Speaker 3: and Ian Farnessa up from twelve until three, Greg Bell
- 1:19:38Speaker 3: The News Tribune and Justin mcindoll. Thanks for listening. I
- 1:19:41Speaker 3: have a great weekend. I'm heading to Vancouver to see
- 1:19:43Speaker 3: how they do the World Cup. I'll be in the
