- 0:25Welcome to Kick Ass Daily, where we bring news, trivia, fun
- 0:29facts, and more just for curious kids like you.
- 0:32Today we're diving into the amazing world of science by
- 0:35learning about 10 of the top scientists in history and the
- 0:38inventions or discoveries they made that changed our lives.
- 0:42Get ready to meet some real life problem solvers and inventors
- 0:45who made the world a better place with their curiosity and
- 0:48hard work. Let's start our science journey
- 0:51with a scientist whose name you might have heard before.
- 0:54His name is Albert Einstein. Albert Einstein was a German
- 0:58born scientist who became famous for his work in physics.
- 1:02He is best known for the theory of relativity, which helps us
- 1:05understand how space and time work together.
- 1:08One of his most famous ideas is the equation E equals MC
- 1:12squared. This equation explains how
- 1:14energy and mass are related. For example, when you see a
- 1:18rocket launch, scientists use Einsteins equations to calculate
- 1:22how much fuel is needed and how fast the rocket can go.
- 1:26Did you know that Einsteins work also helped lead to inventions
- 1:29like GPS, which helps people find directions on their phones
- 1:33or in cars? It's true, without understanding
- 1:36how time changes for fast moving objects, GPS would not work as
- 1:41accurately. Next, let's talk about Marie
- 1:43Curie. Marie Curie was born in Poland
- 1:46and became the first woman to win a Nobel Prize.
- 1:49She actually won 2 Nobel Prizes in two different sciences,
- 1:53physics and chemistry. Her most famous invention was
- 1:56discovering 2 new elements, polonium and radium.
- 2:00Marie Curie also invented ways to use radioactivity to help
- 2:04treat diseases like cancer. Hospitals today use machines
- 2:08called X-rays and radiation therapy to find and treat
- 2:11illnesses thanks to her discoveries.
- 2:14Did you know that during World War One, Marie Curie helped
- 2:17invent portable X-ray machines for doctors to use near the
- 2:19front lines? This helped save the lives of
- 2:22many soldiers. Now let's meet Thomas Edison.
- 2:26Thomas Edison was an American inventor with over 1000 patents.
- 2:31A patent is a special license that says you invented
- 2:34something. Edison invented the first
- 2:36practical electric light bulb. Before his invention, people
- 2:40used candles, oil lamps, or gas lamps for light.
- 2:43After Edisons light bulb, homes, schools and streets became
- 2:48brighter and safer. Edison also invented the
- 2:51phonograph, which was the first machine that could record and
- 2:55play sound. This was the beginning of music
- 2:57players, radios, and even the way we listen to podcasts today.
- 3:01Did you know that Edison also helped invent the first movie
- 3:04camera? He loved to find new ways to use
- 3:07electricity to help people. Let's travel back in time to
- 3:10meet Leonardo da Vinci. Leonardo da Vinci lived in Italy
- 3:14over 500 years ago. He was not only a scientist but
- 3:18also an artist and engineer. He drew detailed pictures of the
- 3:22human body, flying machines, and even robots.
- 3:25One of his inventions was a design for a helicopter.
- 3:29Even though he didn't build it, his ideas helped future
- 3:31inventors create real helicopters.
- 3:34Leonardo also studied how the heart works and made drawings
- 3:37that help doctors understand the body better.
- 3:40Did you know he wrote his notes backward so only he could read
- 3:43them in a mirror? He was very curious and always
- 3:46wanted to learn more about the world.
- 3:48Next up is Nikola Tesla. Nikola Tesla was born in what is
- 3:52now Croatia and became a famous inventor in the United States.
- 3:56Tesla is best known for inventing the alternating
- 3:59current or AC electricity system.
- 4:02This is the type of electricity that powers most homes and
- 4:06buildings today. Before Tesla, people use direct
- 4:09current, or DC, which could not travel very far.
- 4:13Thanks to Tesla's invention, we can have electricity in our
- 4:16homes, schools, and Tesla also invented the Tesla coil, which
- 4:21is used in radios and televisions.
- 4:24Did you know that Tesla once made a robot boat that could be
- 4:27controlled by radio waves? This was one of the first remote
- 4:31control devices. Let's learn about another
- 4:33scientist who changed the world, Isaac Newton.
- 4:37Isaac Newton was an English scientist and mathematician.
- 4:40He is most famous for discovering gravity.
- 4:43The story goes that he saw an apple fall from a tree and
- 4:47wondered why things fall to the ground.
- 4:49Newton's laws of motion explain how things move and stop.
- 4:53These laws are used in sports cars, airplanes, and even space
- 4:57travel. For example, when you kick a
- 4:59soccer ball, the ball moves because of Newton's laws.
- 5:02Did you know that Newton also invented a type of math called
- 5:05calculus, which helps scientists and engineers solve complicated
- 5:09problems? Now let's meet Rosalind
- 5:11Franklin. Rosalind Franklin was a British
- 5:14scientist who helped discover the structure of DNADNA is like
- 5:18a set of instructions inside every living thing that tells it
- 5:21how to grow and work. Franklin used a special machine
- 5:25called X-ray crystallography to take pictures of DNA.
- 5:28Her photograph showed that DNA is shaped like a double Helix,
- 5:32which looks like a twisted ladder.
- 5:34This discovery helped other scientists understand how living
- 5:37things pass on traits like eye color or hair color.
- 5:41Did you know that without Rosalind Franklin's work,
- 5:43scientists would not know how to study genes or cure some
- 5:47diseases? Our next scientist is Alexander
- 5:50Fleming. Alexander Fleming was a Scottish
- 5:53scientist who discovered penicillin.
- 5:55Penicillin is the first antibiotic, which is a medicine
- 5:58that kills bacteria and helps cure infections.
- 6:02Before antibiotics, people could die from small cuts or simple
- 6:06illnesses. After Flemings discovery,
- 6:09millions of lives have been saved by antibiotics.
- 6:12Did you know that Fleming discovered penicillin by
- 6:14accident? He noticed that a mold in his
- 6:17lab killed bacteria growing in a dish, and he realized that the
- 6:20mold could be used as medicine. Let's talk about Catherine
- 6:24Johnson. Catherine Johnson was an
- 6:26American mathematician who worked at NASA, the space
- 6:29agency. She was very good at math and
- 6:32helped calculate the paths for rockets and astronauts.
- 6:35Her work made it possible for the first American astronaut,
- 6:39John Glenn, to orbit the Earth. She also helped with the Apollo
- 6:4311 mission, which sent astronauts to the moon.
- 6:46Did you know that Catherine Johnson started college when she
- 6:49was only 15 years old? She loved solving math problems
- 6:53and helped open doors for more women and African Americans in
- 6:56science. Our final scientist for today is
- 7:00Jane Goodall. Jane Goodall is a British
- 7:02scientist who studies animals, especially chimpanzees.
- 7:06She lived in Africa for many years and watched how
- 7:09chimpanzees live, eat, and play. Jane discovered that chimpanzees
- 7:14make and use tools just like humans.
- 7:16For example, she saw them use sticks to get insects out of
- 7:19holes to eat. This showed that animals can be
- 7:22smart and creative too. Jane Goodall works to protect
- 7:26chimpanzees and teaches people how to care for animals and the
- 7:30environment. Did you know that Jane Goodall
- 7:32has received many awards for her work with animals and still
- 7:35travels the world to talk to kids about science?
- 7:38Now let's do a quick recap of what we learned today.
- 7:41We met 10 top scientists and learned about their inventions
- 7:45and discoveries. Albert Einstein explained how
- 7:48energy and mass are related, which helps with rockets and
- 7:51GPS. Marie Curie discovered new
- 7:53elements and helped invent X-rays and cancer treatments.
- 7:57Thomas Edison invented the electric light bulb and music
- 8:01players. Leonardo da Vinci designed
- 8:03flying machines and studied the human body.
- 8:06Nikola Tesla invented the AC electricity system and remote
- 8:10control devices. Isaac Newton discovered gravity
- 8:13and created the laws of motion. Rosalind Franklin helped
- 8:17discover the structure of DNA. Alexander Fleming found
- 8:21penicillin, the first antibiotic.
- 8:24Catherine Johnson used math to help astronauts travel in space.
- 8:28Jane Goodall discovered how smart chimpanzees are and works
- 8:32to protect them. Each of these scientists used
- 8:34curiosity, observation, and hard work to make discoveries that
- 8:38help people every day. Their inventions are all around
- 8:42us, in our homes, schools, hospitals, and even in the way
- 8:45we use technology. The next time you turn on a
- 8:47light, listen to music, use Agps, or hear about space
- 8:51travel, you can remember the scientists who made these things
- 8:54possible. Thanks for joining us on Kit
