Sam: Hey, welcome to 7 Minute Books. I'm Sam, and today we're talking about Awe by Dacher Keltner, and it's one of those books that quietly rearranges how you see your own day. Sophie, I have to ask, what did you make of this one?
• 0:15
Sophie: Hey there Sam. So this is Dacher Keltner, he's one of the leading emotion scientists in the world, and his whole argument is that we've been ignoring the most powerful emotion we have. Not happiness, not gratitude, not resilience. Awe. And he makes the case that it's not a rare mystical thing reserved for astronauts or people standing at the Grand Canyon. It's a biological necessity, and it's available to basically everyone.
• 0:43
Sam: Which honestly surprised me, because I always filed awe under vacation experiences. You know, the big trip, the once-a-year moment.
• 0:52
Sophie: Right, and he dismantles that completely. He defines awe as the feeling you get when you encounter something vast and mysterious that challenges your understanding of the world. So vastness is one ingredient, and the second one is what he calls accommodation.
• 1:08
Sam: Accommodation. Break that down for me.
• 1:11
Sophie: It's the moment your brain realizes its existing mental maps are too small to explain what you're seeing. There's this brief pleasant disorientation, your internal chatter goes quiet, and instead of cramming the experience into an old box, you expand your thinking. That expansion is the engine of awe. It forces you to update what you believe is possible.
• 1:34
Sam: Okay, so that's the mechanism. But here's the part that got me. He traces this back to our evolution, and he argues awe is a social emotion. It helped our ancestors survive. When early humans stood in front of a massive waterfall or a huge landscape, they felt small, and that smallness pushed them to band together and share resources.
• 1:58
Sophie: Yeah, and he calls it the ultimate we emotion. Fear makes us retreat and protect our own. Awe makes us reach out. It dissolves the boundaries of the self, so you feel less like an isolated individual and more like a small but significant part of a larger whole.
• 2:15
Sam: That's the opposite of what modern life does to us, isn't it? I mean, we're lonelier than ever.
• 2:22
Sophie: And that's exactly where the science gets really compelling. When you experience awe, your nervous system actually shifts. The vagus nerve, which connects your brain to your heart and lungs and gut, gets activated. High vagal tone is linked to better cardiovascular health, less inflammation, and a stronger ability to regulate your emotions.
• 2:45
Sam: Wait, so this isn't just a nice feeling. It's measurable in the body.
• 2:50
Sophie: Very measurable. He found that simply recalling an awe-inspiring memory can lower inflammatory cytokines, which are markers of stress and disease. And awe also quiets the default mode network in your brain. That's the part responsible for your ego and your constant internal monologue.
• 3:08
Sam: So the self-criticism and the worry just fade. That explains why a walk in the woods feels so restorative. You're literally turning down the volume on yourself.
• 3:19
Sophie: Exactly. And he identifies eight sources of awe, and the great thing is they're all universally accessible. The first is nature. The classic one. A mountain, a sunset, a thunderstorm.
• 3:32
Sam: And the second is other people, right? Witnessing moral beauty. A stranger's kindness, or a story of real courage.
• 3:40
Sophie: Yes. Then there's collective movement, which he calls collective effervescence. That's the feeling of being part of a synchronized group. A choir singing in harmony, a crowd at a game, a dance floor moving as one. The shared rhythm creates this powerful sense of belonging.
• 3:59
Sam: I love that one, because you can't get it alone. You have to be with people.
• 4:04
Sophie: Right. Then there's music and art, and big ideas, which is that intellectual awe when you learn about the vastness of the universe or the complexity of the human genome.
• 4:15
Sam: Then spiritual experiences, and birth and death. Those are the big boundary events.
• 4:21
Sophie: And the eighth one is the awe of the everyday, which he really emphasizes. It's hiding in plain sight. The pattern of a leaf, light through a window, the smell of rain on dry earth. The key is cultivating attention and wonder.
• 4:38
Sam: Okay, but I pushed back on this part when I first read it. Because awe can also be triggered by terrifying things. A tornado, a demagogue's speech, a cult leader. He calls it negative awe, and it can make people submissive and obedient.
• 4:53
Sophie: Yeah, he's very honest about that. The same feeling of smallness can close you down instead of opening you up. So the goal isn't to chase awe for its own sake. It's to be discerning. Awe that leads to compassion and curiosity is healthy. Awe that leads to fear and submission is dangerous.
• 5:14
Sam: So what do you actually do with this? Because it's a practical guide too, right?
• 5:18
Sophie: It is. He gives a real roadmap. The first step is just seeking out those eight sources. He talks about the awe walk, where you take a weekly walk in nature and consciously try to notice new and vast things. People who do it report significantly higher well-being and lower stress.
• 5:37
Sam: And then there's attentional shifting, which is basically turning away from your phone and toward the world. Look up at the clouds. Notice the bark on a tree.
• 5:46
Sophie: And connect with others. Share the moment. Awe is amplified when it's shared. Plus he says use stories, read biographies, watch documentaries about nature. And finally, embrace mystery. Let yourself not know. Be comfortable with being small and uncertain.
• 6:05
Sam: Which honestly feels like the hardest one in our culture, because we're so wired to be the expert and have the answer.
• 6:12
Sophie: Right, but he frames it as a sign of an open and growing mind. Not a weakness.
• 6:19
Sam: So the big takeaway for me is that awe isn't a luxury. It's something my body actually needs, and it's available on a walk around the block. That's the thing I'm walking away with.
• 6:31
Sophie: And if you want to go deeper, the whole library is over on 7minutebooks.com/app, with over 6,000 fiction and nonfiction titles you can read or listen to in any language. It starts at $2.99 a month, $9.99 a year, or $19.99 for lifetime access.
• 6:53
Sophie: The whole point is that awe is the feeling that dissolves our separateness and reminds us we're part of something vast and beautiful. We'll see you in the next one.
