Speaker 5: know about you, but I'm about over winner to be
1:47
Speaker 5: honest with you. And it hasn't officially started yet. Five
1:50
Speaker 5: degrees when I left my house this morning. I think
1:52
Speaker 5: our Jeff just said, I think it was nine or
1:54
Speaker 5: ten or so right now in the Capital City. It
1:56
Speaker 5: is going to warn up nicely though later in the week,
2:00
Speaker 5: snow did you get Saturday night in the Sunday morning,
2:02
Speaker 5: I heard Jeff on the news to say that the
2:04
Speaker 5: Buffalo area of Putnham County seems to be one of
2:07
Speaker 5: the areas got to hit the hardest with about five
2:09
Speaker 5: inches out about three at my house in Day's Valley.
2:12
Speaker 5: Wasn't so much the snow as it was the ice.
2:16
Speaker 5: But that's going to be all gone as we're gonna
2:19
Speaker 5: warm up today. Probably not gonna be gone today, but
2:22
Speaker 5: by Wednesday and Thursday, we're't looking at temperatures near sixty
2:24
Speaker 5: by the time Thursday rolls around. Of course, there was
2:26
Speaker 5: no school today for Kanar. Putnham County's main roads were
2:30
Speaker 5: in good shape. Interstate was fine, a couple of the
2:32
Speaker 5: ex sits on rams little dice and of course the
2:34
Speaker 5: side treets and back roads are a little rough. But
2:36
Speaker 5: as I said, it is going to get better. And
2:38
Speaker 5: speaking of the weather, someone who knows a little bit
2:42
Speaker 5: about the weather is meteorologist Brian Hughes. And if you've
2:46
Speaker 5: tune in the last couple of weeks to see him
2:48
Speaker 5: on television, he hasn't been there on something to that.
2:50
Speaker 5: Brian's going to join us to talk about that coming
2:52
Speaker 5: up a little bit later on Aloso Amelia Nicely from
2:54
Speaker 5: West Virginia. Watch will be stopping by and your calls

3:07
Speaker 5: some things going on with the folks of the CLAYSA.
3:09
Speaker 5: Taylor Gow joins us right now. Taylor, good morning, welcome
3:11
Speaker 5: to the show.
3:13
Speaker 6: Good morning. How are you doing?
3:14
Speaker 5: I'm doing fine. So I got to ask you, you're
3:17
Speaker 5: a fan of this weather or no?
3:19
Speaker 6: Well, I like a lot of folks. I've got a
3:22
Speaker 6: youngster in the school system. So this is day four
3:25
Speaker 6: of being home in last week and a half, so
3:27
Speaker 6: I am about ready for this sort of go away.
3:31
Speaker 5: Yeah, well, you know the what. And I'm not a parent,
3:33
Speaker 5: but what parents have told me. They say, hey, the
3:35
Speaker 5: first day is really fun, and then the second day comes,
3:38
Speaker 5: and then the third day doesn't mean doesn't mean you
3:41
Speaker 5: don't love your kids all right, by any stretching the imagination,
3:43
Speaker 5: We're not going to go that far. Okay, but uh cool,
3:46
Speaker 5: but they need to get some of them edumacations and
3:49
Speaker 5: hopefully they'll be able to get back in school. So
3:52
Speaker 5: so what's on your mind this morning? What do you
3:54
Speaker 5: want to talk about from the Clay Center.
3:56
Speaker 6: Well, you know, it actually had a lot to do
3:58
Speaker 6: with this weather going on. I mean, I have a youngster,
4:01
Speaker 6: so I mean I take him to the Clay Centers
4:03
Speaker 6: just happens to be an extra bonus for me that
4:06
Speaker 6: I get to work there. But on these snow days,
4:08
Speaker 6: on these days where it's just too cold to be outside,
4:12
Speaker 6: I have so much joy in taking my son over
4:15
Speaker 6: to the Clay Center and letting him run and play,
4:18
Speaker 6: and I feel like it's a safe environment for him,
4:20
Speaker 6: it's educational at the same time, and we have so
4:23
Speaker 6: many holiday events coming up this over the next two
4:26
Speaker 6: weeks or so, and it's just a really great time
4:30
Speaker 6: for everyone to get their little ones over to the
4:32
Speaker 6: Clay Center. And it's special bonus because we have a
4:35
Speaker 6: new program called the Wonder Season Passport, and it essentially
4:40
Speaker 6: gives back rewards everyone for coming to the Clay Center.
4:43
Speaker 6: So we have a bunch of really cool prizes that
4:46
Speaker 6: you come, you get your little Passport program. You get
4:48
Speaker 6: stamps every time you come, and you earn prizes along
4:50
Speaker 6: the way, so it's a nice little, nice little give
4:53
Speaker 6: back during the holiday season.
4:54
Speaker 5: And I think that's really interesting that parents, if they
4:57
Speaker 5: can safely get out, that they choose to do that
4:59
Speaker 5: at the Place Center, you know, to bring their kids
5:01
Speaker 5: over there. And for the kids, it's probably it's not
5:05
Speaker 5: quite like learning because it's fun, but you're going to
5:07
Speaker 5: fold them into and teaching them something anyway.
5:09
Speaker 6: Right exactly. And we've got so many new things open
5:14
Speaker 6: up at the Clay Center over the last couple of months.
5:16
Speaker 6: I mean, we've had a new permanent exhibit outside of
5:19
Speaker 6: our planetarium called Space Lab. We have a new facility
5:24
Speaker 6: in the back of my town on the lower floor
5:26
Speaker 6: called Maker Space, and we always have tons of different
5:29
Speaker 6: like three D printing, cardboard activities. Yesterday when I took
5:33
Speaker 6: them over there, we made little elf hats. So there's
5:37
Speaker 6: always fun stuff going on. We even actually have a
5:40
Speaker 6: TV studio that opened up at the end of the summer,
5:43
Speaker 6: so it's always fun seeing the kids go in there
5:45
Speaker 6: and get behind the camera, read a script, tell their
5:47
Speaker 6: own breaking news, and then pop out and see the
5:50
Speaker 6: video themselves. So there's just so much fun to do
5:53
Speaker 6: at the Clay Center.
5:54
Speaker 5: Well, look if they're already interested in internships. We'll talk
5:57
Speaker 5: to them here because we're always looking for people.
5:59
Speaker 6: You know, listen, I'll I'll let my little guy know
6:02
Speaker 6: he loves the TV studio.
6:03
Speaker 5: Okay, all right, well that's a how does he feel
6:06
Speaker 5: about radio?
6:07
Speaker 2: Uh? You know what?
6:08
Speaker 6: He loves the Yeah, well.
6:10
Speaker 5: That's how I got here. So so one hundred and
6:13
Speaker 5: eighty eight years ago, that's that's how I ended up
6:15
Speaker 5: here again. Is your your last name?
6:19
Speaker 2: Taylor?
6:19
Speaker 5: Am I pronouncing it right?
6:20
Speaker 2: Is it you?
6:21
Speaker 6: Yes?
6:22
Speaker 2: Gui?
6:22
Speaker 5: Okay, Well that's uh. I knew some people with that
6:25
Speaker 5: with that last name, so uh, I'm glad I was
6:27
Speaker 5: able to get it right. But Dave Island Show on
6:30
Speaker 5: five any Live has brought to you in part by
6:32
Speaker 5: Pinnacle Consultants. Poor indoor air quality can cause a variety
6:34
Speaker 5: of health issues allergies, respiratory problems, and more. Pinnacle offer
6:38
Speaker 5: specialized indoor air quality services for residential, commercial, and industrial
6:42
Speaker 5: type settings. Vis Apinnacle Court dot net. Because what you
6:44
Speaker 5: don't know can hurt you. Is that one of the
6:46
Speaker 5: little ones we hear in the background, now, Taylor, it is?
6:49
Speaker 6: It is? He got tired of watching some type of pigs.
6:52
Speaker 6: So it's about time to hit back up to play.
6:54
Speaker 5: Well, look, if he wants to come on the air
6:56
Speaker 5: right now, we'll put him on the air right now.
6:58
Speaker 5: Or should Is that something I probably shouldn't do?
7:00
Speaker 6: Okay, sir, you want to stay hi? He said, no, okay,
7:04
Speaker 6: all right.
7:04
Speaker 5: Well that's thanks you early for that. That's what most
7:06
Speaker 5: people say when I asked him if they want to
7:08
Speaker 5: talk to me. All right, so I want to talk
7:09
Speaker 5: about some other things. What else she got going on
7:11
Speaker 5: to Clay Shaer that you want to tell the people
7:12
Speaker 5: about today?
7:14
Speaker 6: Oh my goodness. So we've got a wonderful set of
7:16
Speaker 6: performances with the Children's Deer of Charleston. They're doing a
7:19
Speaker 6: production of The Grinch that's coming up this weekend. Those
7:23
Speaker 6: tickets are selling really fast, so a lot of people
7:25
Speaker 6: will buy their tickets at the door, So I really
7:27
Speaker 6: recommend people who want to see that show get their
7:29
Speaker 6: tickets early. We also have our Winter wonder Labs, our
7:34
Speaker 6: Noon Year's Eve event, which is a huge you know,
7:37
Speaker 6: countdown to noon on New Year's Eve, so the kids
7:39
Speaker 6: have that fun experience about having to stay up until midnight.
7:43
Speaker 6: So many wonderful things going on at the Clay Center.
7:45
Speaker 5: I mean, that's always a cool thing. Every year at
7:47
Speaker 5: the Clay Center. I hear people talking about that where
7:49
Speaker 5: they have basically like the Midnight Celebration, but they do
7:52
Speaker 5: it twelve hours.
7:52
Speaker 3: Sooner, right exactly.
7:54
Speaker 6: You know, we do the big countdown, you have a
7:57
Speaker 6: little explosion, the safe leap, you know, done the explosion
8:00
Speaker 6: for the kids, Balloons, confetti, tons of activity. So it's
8:05
Speaker 6: it's a lot of fun.
8:07
Speaker 5: I was talking last week with one of your counterparts,
8:10
Speaker 5: but we were talking about more along the lines of
8:11
Speaker 5: some of the productions that were coming to the Clay Center.
8:14
Speaker 5: But one of the things I love about talking about
8:16
Speaker 5: the Clay Center and what a gym it is for
8:19
Speaker 5: not only the Kanawa Valley Taylor, but for all of
8:21
Speaker 5: West Virginia is the amount of things that they have
8:23
Speaker 5: going on at one time that a lot of people
8:26
Speaker 5: may say, well, what's going on to Clay Center, and
8:28
Speaker 5: you guys, you and Sierra and those folks may say, well,
8:30
Speaker 5: how much time.
8:30
Speaker 2: Have you got?
8:32
Speaker 6: It really really is And anytime someone asks what we've
8:36
Speaker 6: got going on, I said, you know, you where do
8:38
Speaker 6: you want me to start? Because you know, there's so
8:40
Speaker 6: many things that are you know, big and flashy, that
8:42
Speaker 6: we have out there all the time. But we also
8:44
Speaker 6: have everyday programming. You know, we have events called Storytime
8:49
Speaker 6: Theater and book Buds, story Time in studio art Hours.
8:54
Speaker 6: You know, there's all of these programs that are designed
8:56
Speaker 6: for children that happen on an on most daily basis,
8:59
Speaker 6: as well as all of our films and shows in
9:00
Speaker 6: our planetarium. I mean it's literally endless.
9:04
Speaker 5: All right. Hey, Taylor, where's the best place for people
9:07
Speaker 5: to learn about things going on to the Clay Center.
9:08
Speaker 5: I know you got social media and you got a website,
9:10
Speaker 5: but where where's the best place for all the above
9:12
Speaker 5: to check out what's going on with the Clay Center.
9:15
Speaker 6: Absolutely, I will always direct people to our website www
9:18
Speaker 6: dot Klaycenter dot org. We've got everything listed there. If
9:22
Speaker 6: you go up to the top right corner, there should
9:24
Speaker 6: be a tickets button that will bring you to every
9:27
Speaker 6: single activity and event that's going on at the Clay
9:29
Speaker 6: Center on a daily basis.
9:30
Speaker 5: All right, Taylor, appreciate you being here. Thanks a lot.
9:33
Speaker 5: Now go take care of that young and.
9:34
Speaker 6: Okay, I will you have a good one, all.
9:37
Speaker 5: Right, you as well, Taylor? Do you again from the
9:39
Speaker 5: Clay Center?
9:40
Speaker 7: Yeah?
9:40
Speaker 3: It is, uh there's always something going on at the
9:42
Speaker 3: Clay Center.
9:42
Speaker 5: I know that sounds like the oldest cliche in the
9:44
Speaker 5: advertising world, but there really is.
9:46
Speaker 3: There's always something.
9:47
Speaker 5: Going on over there. And you know, the uh with
9:50
Speaker 5: these with these snow days that we've had, the I mean,
9:52
Speaker 5: I'm sure if it gets bad enough, they will take
9:53
Speaker 5: a snow da at the clay Center. But they're open.
9:55
Speaker 5: So if you want something for your kids to do,
9:57
Speaker 5: this is you know, when you look at the snow
10:00
Speaker 5: I know we had. Depending on where you live, I
10:01
Speaker 5: don't know, especially with as cold as it is, whether
10:04
Speaker 5: it's necessarily conducive to getting out and you know, playing
10:06
Speaker 5: in the snow, or whether it's the right kind of snow,
10:08
Speaker 5: or even if you got enough to make a snowman.

11:28
Speaker 9: Many of us consider these core holiday traditions. For over
11:32
Speaker 9: a century, another tradition in the Canal Valley was to
11:35
Speaker 9: give a Christmas donation to Union Mission to help feed, clothe,
11:38

Speaker 5: extremely cold out there, but it is gonna warm up
12:56
Speaker 5: a little bit. But you know, the my here's my
12:59
Speaker 5: official traffic report and the interstate. My drive in this morning,
13:02
Speaker 5: and there were some slick spots here there. Of course,
13:04
Speaker 5: I came in really early this morning, but but not horrible.
13:08
Speaker 5: Getting out of my neighborhood was a little bit dicey
13:11
Speaker 5: in some of the back roads and some of the
13:12
Speaker 5: excits and non ramps are going to be a little
13:14
Speaker 5: slick this morning. But by the time Thursday rolls around
13:16
Speaker 5: and we're in the sixties, you're gonna be saying what
13:18
Speaker 5: happened to that snow? And I well, no, anytime I
13:20
Speaker 5: say anything negative about snow, I get in trouble with
13:22

13:58
Speaker 5: Well, you know, I was talking with Taylor from the
14:00
Speaker 5: Clay Center in the first segment, and that's pretty much
14:02
Speaker 5: what she said too. She was scheduled to be here
14:04

14:06
Speaker 5: she would have to reschedule because of being a snow
14:09

14:12
Speaker 5: So hey, you can always load them up, take them
14:14
Speaker 5: to the Clay Center. That's what she was here to
14:15
Speaker 5: talk about.
14:16
Speaker 11: So there's that.
14:17
Speaker 12: We love the player, all right.
14:19
Speaker 5: I want to go back to a story that you
14:21
Speaker 5: did last week, and it seems to me like it's
14:24
Speaker 5: the same old story. No pun intended issues with the
14:27
Speaker 5: foster care system in West Virginia. Particularly last week during interims,
14:32
Speaker 5: some of the legislators in this particular committee learned that
14:35
Speaker 5: the Department of Human Services, which oversees foster care in
14:38
Speaker 5: the state, is still struggling to pay foster care providers
14:43
Speaker 5: on time, which in turn impacts a lot of kids.
14:47
Speaker 5: You're somebody who writes about a variety of things, but
14:50
Speaker 5: you know, kid issues, child issues take up a lot
14:53
Speaker 5: of your time. Your take on that story that you wrote,
14:55
Speaker 5: what you.
14:55
Speaker 12: Learned from it, well, I think you're kind of lead
14:59
Speaker 12: into that saying it seems like the same old story
15:01
Speaker 12: is how I've felt writing it. You know. I think
15:04
Speaker 12: from my perspective, we're about a year into the Morrissey administration,
15:08
Speaker 12: and so Governor Morrissey and Human Services Secretary Alex Mayor
15:12
Speaker 12: really inherited a very broken foster care system that came
15:16
Speaker 12: from Governor Gym Justice right, thousands of kids, not enough money,
15:20
Speaker 12: not enough DPS workers, etc. So I think my mentality
15:26
Speaker 12: has been this year to still cover it, but give
15:28
Speaker 12: them a grace period to settle in because they've vowed
15:31
Speaker 12: a lot of changes. But what we heard in this
15:34
Speaker 12: committee meeting was very reminiscent of the Justice years. That
15:37
Speaker 12: we have multiple child welfare providers. I'm talking people who
15:41
Speaker 12: drive foster kids to see their biological parents, people that
15:45
Speaker 12: run group homes because we don't have enough foster homes
15:48
Speaker 12: in our state. These people are not being paid on
15:50
Speaker 12: time and it is really affecting their finances. And part
15:54
Speaker 12: of the reason that I'm not being paid on time
15:55
Speaker 12: are technology issues at DUHS, but also they're saying, no
16:00
Speaker 12: one is responding to my emails, no one is helping me,
16:03
Speaker 12: and so this did feel like a very similar story
16:07
Speaker 12: to what I've written before. But I do think lawmakers
16:12
Speaker 12: are probably I don't want to speak for them, but
16:14
Speaker 12: my take is they feel similar to me that you know,
16:16
Speaker 12: we've given you a year to kind of get things rolling,
16:19
Speaker 12: and some things are some changes are in motion, but
16:22
Speaker 12: we can't have a situation where the people that are
16:25
Speaker 12: taking care of six thousand vulnerable kids could potentially shut
16:28
Speaker 12: their doors because they're not getting paid. Because we cannot
16:31
Speaker 12: stand to lose another child welfare provider.
16:33
Speaker 5: And Amelia I don't want to come off like, you know,
16:36
Speaker 5: everybody is blaming the Justice administration, But the facts are
16:40
Speaker 5: it didn't matter who was in that particular office. That
16:43
Speaker 5: a lot of these issues that they're looking for now
16:46
Speaker 5: stem from the previous administration. And it's not a slap
16:49
Speaker 5: against Jim Justice. It could have been whoever was holding
16:51
Speaker 5: that office. It just happened to be Jim Justice.
16:54
Speaker 12: Yes, I mean I would maybe have a different take
16:57
Speaker 12: than you a little bit.
16:58
Speaker 5: Well, you're the expert, so go ahead.
17:00
Speaker 6: No, I'm really not. No, No, I'm not.
17:02
Speaker 12: My opinion is and this is time reporting on it. Yes,
17:06
Speaker 12: I think the foster care system has been completely overwhelmed,
17:10
Speaker 12: largely due to substance abuse crisis and poverty over the.
17:13
Speaker 5: Least exod Yeah, yes.
17:16
Speaker 12: So you are right that you know, whoever whatever governor
17:20
Speaker 12: was an office was going to be dealing with a tragedy, right,
17:24
Speaker 12: But there were so many instances under Justice where CPS
17:30
Speaker 12: was not to the level of staffing that needs to
17:34
Speaker 12: be because it needs money, right, and things were not
17:38
Speaker 12: being carried out, investigations, et cetera. And at the end
17:40
Speaker 12: of the day, the executive branch runs foster care and
17:43
Speaker 12: so I agree with you very overwhelmed system. But I
17:47
Speaker 12: think we saw tragedy after tragedy that showed missteps were made,
17:52
Speaker 12: there was a lack of funding, etc. That could have
17:54
Speaker 12: been dealt with, And I fear that we're continuing that
17:58
Speaker 12: trajectory under Morrisy. And I think Secretary Mayor, I mean,
18:01
Speaker 12: he's laid out very clear things he wants to change, technology,
18:07
Speaker 12: uniform treatment of CPS workers for cases across the state,
18:11
Speaker 12: things that really need to be fixed. I hear a
18:13
Speaker 12: lot of things from Secretary Mayor that are things that
18:16
Speaker 12: we've been reporting on for years that need to be fixed.
18:19
Speaker 12: I think one of the key things, though, is going
18:21
Speaker 12: to be you have to have money to make some
18:24
Speaker 12: of these changes, and you have to have buy in
18:27
Speaker 12: from the department, And some of those people have been
18:29
Speaker 12: there for years, and so I think, you know, what
18:32
Speaker 12: I hear from lawmakers constantly is the Department doesn't want this,
18:35
Speaker 12: they don't want this oversight, they don't want this bill.
18:37
Speaker 12: So I just hope we're not continuing another four years
18:41
Speaker 12: of blaming. You know, Dohs blames the lawmakers. Lawmakers blame Dohs,
18:46
Speaker 12: the governor blames the reporters for being mean, to him.
18:49
Speaker 12: I hope we're not continuing that trajectory because at the
18:52
Speaker 12: end of the day, six thousand kids need us to
18:54
Speaker 12: make sure the system is taking care of them.
18:56
Speaker 5: And Amelia, when you say that, we've had people that
18:59
Speaker 5: have been in and I don't mean the kids, I'm
19:01
Speaker 5: talking about the employees there now. I mean and please
19:03
Speaker 5: don't take this the wrong way. I am not trying
19:05
Speaker 5: to throw shade on I mean, these are some of
19:06
Speaker 5: the hardest working people in many cases, and it's a
19:09
Speaker 5: thing I can't imagine doing that job. I really really can't,
19:14
Speaker 5: and I have nothing but the utmost respect for them.
19:16
Speaker 5: But when you say that there are those in the
19:20
Speaker 5: system that have maybe I think the words you use
19:22
Speaker 5: been there for a while and they tell longmakers. So
19:25
Speaker 5: we don't want this, you know, with all due respect
19:28
Speaker 5: to those workers, this sounds like what you have a
19:33
Speaker 5: lot of times in a lot of businesses, even outside government,
19:36
Speaker 5: when you've had people that have been there. This is
19:37
Speaker 5: the way we've always done it, this is the way
19:39
Speaker 5: we're always going to do it. And we hope that's
19:41
Speaker 5: not the case, because unlike at Ford or unlike at
19:45
Speaker 5: Taco Bell, you're talking about kids here.
19:48
Speaker 12: Yes, and I think, you know, I don't have a
19:52
Speaker 12: what's a clows herd of everyone who's stayed at DUHS
19:55
Speaker 12: after Justice left. So this is just the conversations I've
19:57
Speaker 12: had with lawmakers. But it's not so much the CPS
20:00
Speaker 12: workers who are out in the field because traditionally that
20:03
Speaker 12: job has a high turnover rate, and you can imagine
20:05
Speaker 12: it's more people in the upper level that I think
20:08
Speaker 12: lawmakers have had concerns about. You know, we have a
20:12
Speaker 12: new secretary and we have some new people in leadership,
20:14
Speaker 12: but just making sure that it's not the same, all same,
20:18
Speaker 12: all out of CPS and DHS moving forward.
20:20
Speaker 6: And.
20:23
Speaker 12: Just also making sure that it's not dis blaming the
20:25
Speaker 12: Justice administration. You know, this federal audit just came out
20:28
Speaker 12: that said that do Justice and handle ninety percent of
20:33
Speaker 12: child abuse investigations correctly under Justice, and Secretary Alex Mayor
20:39
Speaker 12: has already outlined changes from that, but you know, a
20:43
Speaker 12: year from now, how do we make sure those changes
20:45
Speaker 12: actually go through. I think that's a big concern for
20:47
Speaker 12: lawmakers is like we do feel like we have a
20:49
Speaker 12: leader in place who wants to fix it, but also
20:51
Speaker 12: we heard this song and dance before under Justice and
20:54
Speaker 12: we're still getting bad news from the Justice Administration in
20:57
Speaker 12: foster care, like it's still coming out. So I think
21:01
Speaker 12: I definitely felt foster care was a big theme of interims.
21:05
Speaker 12: I had plenty to write about, but there was definitely
21:08
Speaker 12: a grow. There was already attention in the room and
21:11
Speaker 12: we're not even to the session yet.
21:13
Speaker 5: Talking again with Amelia Nicely from West Virginia, watch the
21:16
Speaker 5: Day Island showing five. Any Life is brought to parted
21:18
Speaker 5: by Bridge Valley Community and Technical College. Insurance agents are
21:20
Speaker 5: in demand of the state and all across the country.
21:23
Speaker 5: Bridge Valley can help you take that first step. Their
21:25
Speaker 5: insurance pre Sales licensure course will prepared to sit for
21:27
Speaker 5: the state required Property and Casualty Insurance Licenser Exam to
21:31
Speaker 5: start your career in this ever growing field. Check out
21:33
Speaker 5: Bridge Valley dot EEDU for details Bridge Valley Community Technical College.
21:36
Speaker 5: Your career starts here. And you know somebody again who
21:41
Speaker 5: covers this on a on an almost daily basis. And
21:45
Speaker 5: what we're seeing now is a direct offshoot of the
21:48
Speaker 5: opioid crisis that we've had. And of course, you know,
21:50
Speaker 5: we had the pain pill issue and then that transition
21:52
Speaker 5: into this and that began this and so on and
21:54
Speaker 5: so forth. Are the numbers Amelia getting any better at all?
22:00
Speaker 5: Or are we making any kind of headway about the
22:02
Speaker 5: numbers of the kids.
22:03
Speaker 3: And this is not talking about that. I'm not talking
22:05
Speaker 3: about the officials.
22:06
Speaker 5: I'm talking about the single bottom line number of kids
22:10
Speaker 5: in the system.
22:12
Speaker 12: No, we're not. And I think what really stood out
22:15
Speaker 12: to me over the last couple of weeks is we
22:17
Speaker 12: have more than five hundred kids out of state. You know,
22:20
Speaker 12: I've written about sending kids out of state facilities for
22:23
Speaker 12: five years now and I checked the data pretty regularly
22:28
Speaker 12: and it usually hovers around three hundred. So I was
22:31
Speaker 12: really surprised to see that we were now over five
22:33
Speaker 12: hundred kids out of state and back to the it
22:36
Speaker 12: takes money. One of the bills that lawmakers are going
22:40
Speaker 12: to propose this year is setting up a fund that
22:43
Speaker 12: would be used to open up beds in state or
22:46
Speaker 12: build a group home to bring these kids from out
22:49
Speaker 12: of state. We lose a lot of oversight of these kids.
22:52
Speaker 12: We are paying astronomical amounts to send them out of state,
22:57
Speaker 12: and so that's a big push this year is to
23:00
Speaker 12: bring these kids closer to their home communities. But it
23:05
Speaker 12: will take money. And last year we spent seventy one
23:08
Speaker 12: million dollars sending kids out of state and that was
23:10
Speaker 12: about I think two hundred and fifty kids or something
23:13
Speaker 12: around that. And the lawmakers say, look, we already have
23:16
Speaker 12: the money. We can just reallocate it. But that's going
23:19
Speaker 12: to take department buy in, so that'll be something to
23:22
Speaker 12: watch well.
23:23
Speaker 5: And it's interesting that you say that because last week
23:25
Speaker 5: on Metro News Midday we had on state Senator Eric
23:28
Speaker 5: Tarr and he talked about that. I don't know whether
23:30
Speaker 5: you heard the interview or not, but Senator Tarr said,
23:34
Speaker 5: and I'm very much paraphrasing here, he said, we just
23:36
Speaker 5: keep throwing money at this and throwing money at this.
23:39
Speaker 5: We've we can't. You know, money is not going to
23:41
Speaker 5: cure everything. And to a certain extent, I agree with that.
23:45
Speaker 5: There are all the money in the world, is what
23:47
Speaker 5: you're saying is true, and I have no reason to
23:48
Speaker 5: doubt it. Amelia Ween. There are all the money in
23:50
Speaker 5: the world. We wanted it, But if we don't have
23:52
Speaker 5: department buy in, then what do we really have.
23:55
Speaker 12: Right and having just accountability on the system, I thinking
24:00
Speaker 12: that has been I don't know, just difficult for me
24:03
Speaker 12: the last week is seeing pushed back from the executive
24:07
Speaker 12: branch all my reporting, but that was something that was
24:10
Speaker 12: really difficult under the Justice years. They did not want
24:13
Speaker 12: any negative headlines, right and so at the end of
24:16
Speaker 12: the day, this is a very broken system. Nobody is
24:20
Speaker 12: expecting more see to fix it overnight, but we do
24:23
Speaker 12: have to be able to ask questions, hold people accountable
24:27
Speaker 12: for fixing it because again, these are six thousand kids
24:30
Speaker 12: who don't have lobbyists, they don't have a voice at
24:32
Speaker 12: the state House. We have to make sure that the
24:35
Speaker 12: system is working for them because so often they do
24:37
Speaker 12: not have anyone to advocate for them.
24:40
Speaker 5: Talk to begin with Amelia Niceley from West Virginia. Watch
24:42
Speaker 5: all to switch gears here for a moment. Last week,
24:45
Speaker 5: there was a press event held by House Speaker Roger Hanshaw,
24:48
Speaker 5: and he was surrounded by the Republican legislators and they
24:51
Speaker 5: are sane that they don't want to get bogged down
24:55
Speaker 5: by social issues in the upcoming session, that it's about jobs,
24:59
Speaker 5: it's about the economy, me so on and so forth.
25:01
Speaker 5: This is what we are focused on. There was talk
25:04
Speaker 5: of UH proposed pay raises UH for for teachers and
25:08
Speaker 5: school service personnel. The governor then comes out and says
25:12
Speaker 5: that he would also support all state workers, if I'm correct,
25:15
Speaker 5: all state workers getting to pay raise. I want to
25:18
Speaker 5: with and we all and we all know that Roger
25:21
Speaker 5: Hanshaw is a man of his word and somebody who's
25:24
Speaker 5: almost above reproach. But what we want to believe, or
25:28
Speaker 5: at least I do, this is just me speaking for
25:30
Speaker 5: me Emilia. I want to believe what he is saying.
25:32
Speaker 5: I want to believe what those other legislators are saying.
25:36
Speaker 5: But at the same time, there's a track record, you
25:39
Speaker 5: know what I mean, not from Speaker Handshaw, but there
25:42
Speaker 5: is a track record of all we are going to
25:45
Speaker 5: go do this jobs, jobs, jobs, economy, economy. Oh but
25:48
Speaker 5: let's let's let people ride motorcycles while standing up.
25:55
Speaker 12: I how do elect This is going to be an
25:59
Speaker 12: election year session, and I don't like covering electioneer sessions
26:03
Speaker 12: because they affect the billmaking process and people trying to
26:07
Speaker 12: get information to put on mailers, like oh, you didn't
26:09
Speaker 12: vote for.
26:09
Speaker 6: This, right.
26:10
Speaker 12: So there's a lot of things that I think threaten
26:13
Speaker 12: his agenda. However, I think that the House could very
26:17
Speaker 12: well do what they laid out this week. I think
26:21
Speaker 12: the wild card is the Senate. For me, It's like,
26:24
Speaker 12: by all means, the House could pass these bills, but
26:27
Speaker 12: they could very well never see the light of day
26:29
Speaker 12: in the Senate. They could also not get signed into
26:33
Speaker 12: law by the governor. All the relationships are so fraught
26:37
Speaker 12: right now. Yeah, So I think that's what I do.
26:40
Speaker 12: Expect that much of what Speaker Hanshaw laid out will
26:44
Speaker 12: at least be up for debate, probably will pass the House.
26:47
Speaker 12: Seems like he has a lot of buy in from people.
26:49
Speaker 12: I don't know that I buy that we won't see
26:51
Speaker 12: any social issue bills this year because every year the
26:54
Speaker 12: last few years I come into session, I'm like, what
26:56
Speaker 12: more could they do on transgender issues? And they always
26:59
Speaker 12: find something or like, you know, I didn't expect a
27:03
Speaker 12: four hour debate on standing up on a motorcycle, right Like,
27:05
Speaker 12: they always find something that is like a wild cards do.
27:11
Speaker 12: But I think a lot of Speaker Henshaw's agenda will
27:13
Speaker 12: move forward. I just I think it's we can't be
27:17
Speaker 12: too optimistic about what its life will look like once
27:20
Speaker 12: it leaves the House.
27:21
Speaker 5: Well, and it's an election year, as you said, all
27:24
Speaker 5: the House seats are up, some of the Senate seats
27:26
Speaker 5: are going to be up, and it's that it's that thing,
27:28
Speaker 5: and and and uh. This is when uh, members of
27:32
Speaker 5: the media like yourself and Metro News and others, we
27:35
Speaker 5: find ourselves out there because mailers will go out and
27:38
Speaker 5: they'll say things like this was said, this was reported
27:42
Speaker 5: by a million iceley and you're like, Okay, well, I
27:44
Speaker 5: didn't know I was going to be in a campaign ad,
27:46
Speaker 5: but there you go. You know, it's public record.
27:47
Speaker 7: Yeah, yes, yes, But then they get mad, like last
27:51
Speaker 7: year there was, especially after the motorcycle debate, several lawmakers
27:55
Speaker 7: were you know, saying to Brad or myself or whomever, like.
27:59
Speaker 6: You made us look.
28:00
Speaker 12: It's like, okay, but you really did debate standing up
28:04
Speaker 12: on a motorcycle for four hours, Like these quotes are
28:07
Speaker 12: things you guys did say happen.
28:10
Speaker 5: All right, Hey, Amelia, what are you working on the
28:12
Speaker 5: next couple of days other than chasing kids around the house.
28:16
Speaker 12: Yes, you know, I'm just trying to follow up on
28:18
Speaker 12: some school closings.
28:19
Speaker 6: And I think.
28:21
Speaker 12: Schools are the things we hear the most about from readers.
28:24
Speaker 12: That's one of the biggest concerns, along with jobs and
28:26
Speaker 12: utility rates. So I'm just really trying to get ready
28:30
Speaker 12: for session, hopefully do some stories really showing what's at
28:33
Speaker 12: stake for our schools moving forward and what if anything
28:38
Speaker 12: lawmakers might do on the school funding formula in the
28:41
Speaker 12: upcoming sixty days. So that's really what I'm focusing on
28:43
Speaker 12: as we get dangerously close to going back to session.
28:48
Speaker 5: I love that dangerously close. Yes, all right, Amelia, we'll
28:52
Speaker 5: talk soon. Thanks a lot. I think I appreciate you
28:53
Speaker 5: being here for Christmasy as well. Twenty four minutes away

32:49
Speaker 5: Editor's note, TJ. Meadows is on vacation this week, so
32:53
Speaker 5: Dave Wilson is flying solo on talk line. First up
32:56
Speaker 5: here in our Charleston studios at ten oh six this morning.
32:59
Speaker 5: Senator Shelley more Capito, she'll be in studio here and
33:03
Speaker 5: as you heard Jeff doing the news there there, she's
33:06
Speaker 5: made an official that she is running for re election,
33:08
Speaker 5: so she's going to come in studio and talk to
33:11
Speaker 5: mister Wilson about it. Well, they say, you can always
33:13
Speaker 5: talk about the weather when you can't find anything else
33:16
Speaker 5: to talk about, or you could talk about the weather people.
33:19
Speaker 3: Meteorologist Brian Hughes is here. He you doing man, I'm
33:21
Speaker 3: doing good.
33:22
Speaker 14: I slept a couple couple of mornings in Welcome at
33:26
Speaker 14: eight o'clock in the morning.
33:27
Speaker 3: Wow, I've been able to do that on Monday.
33:30
Speaker 5: What time when?
33:31
Speaker 12: When?
33:31
Speaker 5: What time did you get up? What was your normal
33:33
Speaker 5: con You know, that's the number one question you probably get.
33:35
Speaker 14: It always been, always been a number one question one
33:37
Speaker 14: thirty in the morning when you got up, because you know,
33:41
Speaker 14: I made sure and I've worked from home for the
33:44
Speaker 14: most part. So i would get up, boson a dog,
33:48
Speaker 14: she would go out, she'd come back in, she'd eat,
33:51
Speaker 14: I'd go upstairs, and then I'd start working from home,
33:53
Speaker 14: all going on, all the computers at working, and.
33:55
Speaker 3: I'd start from there.
33:56
Speaker 14: And then, uh, I didn't actually get into the building
33:59
Speaker 14: to it like four am, okay, but that's because I
34:02
Speaker 14: did everything at home, finish it all up, got dressed,
34:05
Speaker 14: showering up, and I'd get in the end the building
34:07
Speaker 14: between four sometimes four or fifteen. But then literally it
34:12
Speaker 14: was just put on the tie and go in the air.
34:15
Speaker 5: Do you have a guy that like when you walked
34:16
Speaker 5: in that had the tie, you just ducked your head
34:18
Speaker 5: under it.
34:18
Speaker 11: I did.
34:19
Speaker 14: And then and then the ladies there there were three
34:21
Speaker 14: ladies that were making sure my hair and makeup was
34:23
Speaker 14: all on the right place.
34:24
Speaker 5: Same same thing here. You have the same thing here
34:26
Speaker 5: every day.
34:26
Speaker 3: It's amazing. Yeah, they're wonderful in the purple room. You know.
34:30
Speaker 5: It is funny because it's always interesting to me when
34:34
Speaker 5: you talk about people that do mornings, whether it's radio
34:37
Speaker 5: or telephone, because everybody's on a different schedule. I knew
34:40
Speaker 5: a lot of mourning people that did morning shows, which
34:43
Speaker 5: are you know, on average six to ten, some five
34:45
Speaker 5: to ten or whatever that would actually stay up all
34:48
Speaker 5: night and so basically they were on twelve hour reversals. Yeah,
34:53
Speaker 5: so what they would do is they would they would,
34:55
Speaker 5: you know, go do their grocery shopping if you know,
34:58
Speaker 5: somebody was open twenty four hours. They would do all
34:59
Speaker 5: that that stuff, then go to work and do the
35:01
Speaker 5: morning show, then come home and sleep in the afternoon,
35:03
Speaker 5: get up at five or six, and you know, everybody's different.
35:05
Speaker 5: I didn't do that when I did more.
35:07
Speaker 14: Well, here's what's interesting. Most of your network television morning
35:10
Speaker 14: shows are produced in the afternoon and evening. Everything is
35:15
Speaker 14: done during the day, they're scheduling everything, putting it all together.
35:18
Speaker 14: Then anything that happens after midnight, they just kind of
35:21
Speaker 14: plug that in the shows, but all your morning shows
35:24
Speaker 14: produced the day before.
35:26
Speaker 3: Yeah, so you're letting all the secret money. I gang
35:29
Speaker 3: tell you so many secrets that's observed.
35:30
Speaker 5: Well, so can I got radio. Well where we're gonna
35:32
Speaker 5: carry it. So I am going to address quickly. I'm
35:34
Speaker 5: going to address the elephant in the room. Yeah, you've
35:39
Speaker 5: not been on TV lately.
35:40
Speaker 3: No, okay, it's been kind of refreshing.
35:43
Speaker 5: Okay, all right, and we know we're not going to
35:45
Speaker 5: go into all the dollege. Yeah, we don't have to
35:47
Speaker 5: get at all that. But but but you're no longer there.
35:50
Speaker 14: I and just so we're queer. I don't know where
35:52
Speaker 14: everybody got this idea. I did not retire.
35:55
Speaker 3: I quit. I resigned. I resigned.
35:58
Speaker 14: Literally it was fourteen years to the day, December twelfth
36:02
Speaker 14: of my anniversary. But uh, you know, here's the deal.
36:05
Speaker 14: Contracts in the media world have changed dramatically. In the
36:09
Speaker 14: old days. Old days really loves a handshake. I mean, yes,
36:13
Speaker 14: you signed paper, but it was a handshake. And now
36:15
Speaker 14: and now the the contracts are so complicated, and uh,
36:19
Speaker 14: you don't own your own name. Uh in some instances,
36:23
Speaker 14: and Dad really wanted to own my own name.
36:26
Speaker 3: I mean, I do own it, but uh, but morning.
36:28
Speaker 14: But I'll tell you what my best friend Josh told me,
36:33
Speaker 14: uh told me the other day, goes, you know, like the.
36:35
Speaker 3: Last four years, you've just been tired.
36:36
Speaker 5: And I said, yes, And in all fairness, it's not
36:40
Speaker 5: just that job. I mean because you were I mean
36:43
Speaker 5: you got that whole boat thing that you're doing.
36:45
Speaker 14: This too, and and and yes, and and and there's
36:49
Speaker 14: the regatta.
36:50
Speaker 5: That's what I was referring.
36:51
Speaker 3: Yeah, well there's the boat thing.
36:54
Speaker 5: And then I was trying to make it really yeah
36:57
Speaker 5: about it being a little boat thing, a little boat
36:58
Speaker 5: that little boat festal, a little festival, and listen that
37:01
Speaker 5: that is that I did take that on and that
37:05
Speaker 5: was it was a lot of it on my shoulders.
37:07
Speaker 14: I think we were to spread some of that out.
37:10
Speaker 14: But yeah, that I'll tell you what, I've never had
37:15
Speaker 14: more satisfaction in my life than being able to put
37:19
Speaker 14: that together with the mayor, Jane, Josh, the entire board.
37:26
Speaker 14: And I mean there's so many and let me tell
37:28
Speaker 14: you something, city workers can't thank them enough. Oh yeah,
37:31
Speaker 14: but but yeah, I put I put that on my
37:33
Speaker 14: shoulders and that that probably is what helped tire me out,
37:36
Speaker 14: but I got more satisfaction on it. But what I
37:38
Speaker 14: what I want to do more than anything, was try
37:41
Speaker 14: and find something I've always except for the last fourteen years,
37:45
Speaker 14: I've always sort of reinvented myself. I've turned a new
37:48
Speaker 14: leaf over, done something different, relatively in the same field.
37:51
Speaker 14: But meteorology, I will tell you this. The more data
37:55
Speaker 14: that we get these days, and we're getting larger and
37:58
Speaker 14: larger data sets, the more we to delve into things
38:01
Speaker 14: and research things. We're finding new information, We're finding new
38:05
Speaker 14: ways to forecast things. I mean, the AI, while it's
38:10
Speaker 14: going to do a lot of work for us, what
38:12
Speaker 14: it's doing is helping us find the minute details on
38:16
Speaker 14: you know, how tornadoes spin up. How can long in
38:18
Speaker 14: the future, can we predict these things. I mean, there's
38:22
Speaker 14: technology that we're going to have within the next year.
38:26
Speaker 14: It's going to tell us that we have a forty
38:29
Speaker 14: five percent chance of seeing the tornado within the next hour,
38:32
Speaker 14: you know, and it's it's going to be in this area,
38:36
Speaker 14: that's that's coming to spring, and that is something that's fascinating.
38:40
Speaker 14: So what we need more now than anything, are meteorologists
38:45
Speaker 14: to help because companies universities. Everybody is making decisions now
38:51
Speaker 14: based on the forecast. You have us new superintendent here
38:55
Speaker 14: and go on, kindy school, who're saying we need to
38:57
Speaker 14: make more decisions based on the weather. I mean, look
39:01
Speaker 14: at what's happened here in the last few weeks. And
39:04
Speaker 14: it wasn't I know that parents go, wouldn't they? Hell,
39:07
Speaker 14: just happened here? We're out for two inches of snow. Yeah,
39:11
Speaker 14: you're right, because guess how many recks we had And
39:14
Speaker 14: it was about when it was falling.
39:16
Speaker 3: It's not about really how much.
39:18
Speaker 14: Although the majority of accidents happened with two inches or
39:20
Speaker 14: less of snow, if you get three to five inches,
39:23
Speaker 14: it's much easier to handle.
39:24
Speaker 2: And why is that?
39:25
Speaker 5: Does it most people just stay home? Or or is
39:27
Speaker 5: it just easier to drive on? Why is that right?
39:29
Speaker 5: Or maybe they're not suspicted. They don't see the giant
39:31
Speaker 5: snow banks. They're not expecting it.
39:32
Speaker 14: Maybe right, Well, it is a lot of it is
39:35
Speaker 14: the packing of the snow. And plus, as you know
39:38
Speaker 14: that you can only drive in ruts, you're going to
39:40
Speaker 14: stay in those ruts. Whereas an inch that's kind of
39:42
Speaker 14: blown around, or two inches he is kind of here
39:44
Speaker 14: there you're going to take all three lanes of the
39:47
Speaker 14: three lane highway. There's going one direction, and somebody's going
39:51
Speaker 14: to hit a patch. Bam bam rack. Greg Craig quick, right.
39:54
Speaker 14: But if you're driving in ruts, guess what you're following,
39:58
Speaker 14: the lead or the leader. And so that's the difference.
40:01
Speaker 14: There's a big difference there. But what you're seeing and
40:05
Speaker 14: you're going to see now more than anything. Industry taking
40:08
Speaker 14: the advice of meteorologists that if you do this, you're
40:11
Speaker 14: going to save money. Do this, you're gonna make more money.
40:15
Speaker 14: And and we're able to do that.
40:17
Speaker 3: We will.
40:18
Speaker 14: The proof is in the pudding, and the more data
40:20
Speaker 14: we get, you're going to see it. And that's why
40:23
Speaker 14: we actually need more meteorologists do more things.
40:24
Speaker 5: So it's the.
40:25
Speaker 3: Exact opposite of what people might think.
40:27
Speaker 5: People might think, well, now that we have AI, we
40:29
Speaker 5: don't we don't need meteorologists anymore.
40:31
Speaker 3: And it's the exact opposite. It's the exact opposite.
40:34
Speaker 14: AI is going to help us do the basic things,
40:36
Speaker 14: the monotonous things, and that and that is what I'm
40:40
Speaker 14: looking forward to. I'm looking forward to any next opportunity
40:45
Speaker 14: that allows me to go Okay, ay, I is going
40:47
Speaker 14: to do this, this and this.
40:48
Speaker 3: That's fine.
40:49
Speaker 14: Well, now we're going to get in the rest of
40:50
Speaker 14: this stuff, and we're going to get deeper into the forecast.
40:52
Speaker 14: We're going to because listen, when disasters happen a lot
40:55
Speaker 14: of times, and I'm talking outside of natural disasters, when
40:58
Speaker 14: human disasters happen imediately, guess who's on standby actually in
41:03
Speaker 14: the background for TV response, for a radio response, all this.
41:06
Speaker 14: It's a meteorologist who can tell you the wind's blowing
41:09
Speaker 14: this direction, this chemical does this, and therefore you have
41:12
Speaker 14: to evacuate this, you have to take care of that.
41:15
Speaker 14: So there are so many things that a metiaorriologists can
41:18
Speaker 14: do and is good at. And it's not just the
41:21
Speaker 14: exact is it going to be cold today of warm tomorrow?
41:25
Speaker 5: At a radio programer one time that told me, he said,
41:27
Speaker 5: people don't this was, you know, granted thirty years ago. Yeah,
41:30
Speaker 5: sold me. One of my bosses said, people don't want
41:32
Speaker 5: to know if it's going to rain, They want to
41:33
Speaker 5: know if it's going to rain on me. Yeah, that's
41:35
Speaker 5: that's basically. And he was always real big on driving
41:38
Speaker 5: that home is like okay, all right, it's going to rain. Okay,
41:41
Speaker 5: why is this important? Because we got Live on the
41:43
Speaker 5: Levee tonight, right, because we got outdoor graduations at Systantville
41:47
Speaker 5: High School or whatever. That's that's what people want to know.
41:49
Speaker 14: I have been a part of Live of the Levee
41:52
Speaker 14: uh weather decisions literally for the last decade and almost
41:56
Speaker 14: every single every single time Marshall Baseball, dirty Birds. I
42:01
Speaker 14: mean I get phone calls all right, you know for
42:05
Speaker 14: the longest time, I got phone calls all the time.
42:08
Speaker 3: Hey, this event's going on. Can you help me out?
42:11
Speaker 3: Spencer Atkins, we are great friends.
42:13
Speaker 14: By the way, Just so you know, Spencer Atkins, he
42:16
Speaker 14: does weather across the country for these marching band contests,
42:20
Speaker 14: Lightning decisions have to be made. It's it's about safety,
42:22
Speaker 14: but it's also about again making money and losing money.
42:26
Speaker 14: And there are more job opportunities that are coming up
42:30
Speaker 14: for media orologists for these companies. You never would imagine
42:33
Speaker 14: NW mediorologists or consulting for them, and there's opportunity out there.
42:38
Speaker 14: The state has contracts with weather companies, multiple contracts in fact,
42:43
Speaker 14: I so and we found out we found out what
42:47
Speaker 14: was it ten years ago, the Canon County Schools had
42:50
Speaker 14: a contract with Aci Weather and they were consulting, you know,
42:53
Speaker 14: and they're they're they're making decisions based on that.
42:56
Speaker 5: I mean, I could tell you last week a majority
42:59
Speaker 5: of my time I'm and I appreciate I'm not you know,
43:03
Speaker 5: crapping on or whatever. But but there's people upset about
43:06
Speaker 5: the school situation either, as you said, you know, and
43:09
Speaker 5: I had Doctor Potter on the show last week, John
43:11
Speaker 5: County School swimped in, who did a masterful job of explaining, Hey,
43:15
Speaker 5: we went with the data that we had. It's not
43:18
Speaker 5: always perfect. Now, it's not always no matter what kind
43:20
Speaker 5: of technology you have, it's not always going to do.
43:22
Speaker 5: It's a whole lot better than what it was, you know,
43:25
Speaker 5: in eighteen sixty five. And no I wasn't there, but
43:30
Speaker 5: it's not going to be perfect. And the parents, and
43:32
Speaker 5: like you said at the beginning of this, but you know,
43:34
Speaker 5: the parents need to know, I mean, because it's dake.
43:37
Speaker 5: I mean, back when I was a kid and everybody's
43:40
Speaker 5: you know, I'm not trying to be sexist, but it was,
43:42
Speaker 5: in fact, everybody and my mother was the only mother
43:44
Speaker 5: in the community that worked. Everybody else's mom stayed home.
43:47
Speaker 5: So it's snow day it's no big deal, you know,
43:49
Speaker 5: exactly a bigger deal now.
43:51
Speaker 14: But more than anything, meteorology is becoming more and more important,
43:56
Speaker 14: and there are opportunities out there and listen, if I
43:59
Speaker 14: can up away and relaxed, even even if it is
44:03
Speaker 14: even it's for a week, and can you know, kind
44:06
Speaker 14: of get my bearings again. There's jobs that I'm going
44:09

48:01
Speaker 5: huge rise and online mediaorrologists now YouTube and whatnot that
48:06
Speaker 5: you can watch while out of the home. Do you
48:08
Speaker 5: see a time when they will fully overtake TV news
48:10
Speaker 5: weather segments. I don't think that's too far off. So
48:12
Speaker 5: as a texture, yes, and no. I mean, listen, we
48:16
Speaker 5: have Ryan Hall. We've worked with him.
48:19
Speaker 14: You know when I was at thirteen, we worked with him.
48:22
Speaker 14: But here's also the thing. I'm afraid of the TikTok mediaologist.
48:26
Speaker 14: Oh good God, bless America because and guess what they're
48:31
Speaker 14: ninety five percent of them are not a mediaurologists. And
48:34
Speaker 14: when I say not in media orologists, they haven't had
48:35
Speaker 14: a weather course. Hell, half of them haven't been to college.
48:38
Speaker 14: And it's not that you got to go to college.
48:40
Speaker 14: I have some smarts, but here's the deal. Calculus of
48:44
Speaker 14: who dynamic And you're a scientist.
48:46
Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean you're you're, you're you're a real science.
48:48
Speaker 3: I mean I might, I might be a joke for
48:50
Speaker 3: most of my life.
48:51
Speaker 5: But you know stuff, Yeah.
48:54
Speaker 3: I know stuff.
48:54
Speaker 14: And here's I have in as far as weather is concerned.
48:59
Speaker 14: I have twenty six years of experience. And now you
49:03
Speaker 14: have some kid going, there's a hurricane on three hundred
49:06
Speaker 14: and sixty hours out.
49:08
Speaker 3: Now there's not. Now there's so.
49:11
Speaker 14: But yes, there is that online rise. Am I a
49:14
Speaker 14: part of the online meteorology brigade?
49:19
Speaker 3: Yes I am. Yes.
49:21
Speaker 14: I do get paid by Facebook. And when I say
49:24
Speaker 14: get paid, they pay me to produce content. And and
49:28
Speaker 14: I've quietly done not much content of late, but that's
49:32
Speaker 14: going to ramp up because here's the deal. People are clamoring.
49:36
Speaker 14: There's a void, there's a gap. People are clamoring for
49:40
Speaker 14: more weather content. And it's when I said weather content,
49:43
Speaker 14: people get scared of the extremes. And I'll tell you
49:46
Speaker 14: I just posed a little while ago. This is the
49:48
Speaker 14: second coldest morning in history on this date. We hit
49:52
Speaker 14: three degrees this morning in Charleston. The record low is zero,
49:56
Speaker 14: so we just three degrees. Shy of a record. It
49:58
Speaker 14: was number two in the record books. This one is
50:01
Speaker 14: that cold.
50:02
Speaker 5: Okay, it's rough. But see, I'm old enough to remember
50:05
Speaker 5: when the weather on television was like a throwaway segment
50:09
Speaker 5: almost you would have never have led with. As a
50:11
Speaker 5: matter of fact, back when I was a kid of
50:13
Speaker 5: a boy, it was news, and it was sports and.
50:16
Speaker 3: Then and then.
50:16
Speaker 5: And sports has even changed too, because I mean, it's
50:18
Speaker 5: not so much about the scores anymore because everybody gets
50:21
Speaker 5: them on their phone, and so you tell stories, right,
50:23
Speaker 5: you know, and and uh and and that's all right.
50:26
Speaker 5: Let's get back to regatta here for a moment. You
50:27
Speaker 5: tease something there, mister Hughes.

50:44
Speaker 3: Yeah, this is going to be something.
50:46
Speaker 14: They're going to be more bombs bursting than air than
50:49
Speaker 14: anything that happened ever in the Civil War around here.
50:52
Speaker 14: So it is. It is going to be incredible. And
50:57
Speaker 14: I wish I could tell you more.
