Latest / Elon Musk Podcast / SpaceX Starship News: November 17th Launch May be Delayed
Transcript
- 0:00Hey everybody, welcome back to the show.
- 0:02Today's episode is going to be focusing on some Starship news
- 0:05for possibly this Friday, November 17th.
- 0:08SpaceX announced the other day that they plan on doing a launch
- 0:12of Starship IFT 2 Friday the 17th pending final regulatory
- 0:19approval. They posted this on their
- 0:21website a few days ago. A live web cast of the flight
- 0:24will begin 30 minutes before liftoff while you can watch it
- 0:27here or on x.com. So on space XS website or on X
- 0:33at SpaceX on X, that's that's kind of a weird thing as far as
- 0:37I'm concerned that they only posted on X when they had.
- 0:41They have millions of followers on YouTube and one of their one
- 0:45of their key proponents of doing Space Flight is to excite people
- 0:51about Space Flight. So first thing, I don't know why
- 0:54they went over to XI. Get it because Elon owns it.
- 0:56But can you please leave a comment down below?
- 0:58Are you excited that they're moving over to X or are you
- 1:01bummed that they're moving over to X?
- 1:02Because I'm kind of bummed, to be honest with you.
- 1:07Their video platform is not great and they're working on it,
- 1:09which I understand, but right now I would prefer to watch it
- 1:13on YouTube anyway, that's a that's a whole thing.
- 1:16That's a whole other thing. So basically they said we were
- 1:19going to try to fly this thing on Friday, November 15th.
- 1:23All right. And they have this Friday,
- 1:26November 5th, 17th, sorry, 17th. And they have this whole video
- 1:30presentation. They did this whole thing on X
- 1:32where they post this cool video. It's a promo video and it's rad
- 1:36and it gets it got me excited. There's cool like music and
- 1:39there's there's new shots of the of the IFT one and there's new
- 1:45shots of, you know, there's new shots of the rocket and stuff,
- 1:48very cool. So they did this IFT one rewind,
- 1:52which is really neat. So the IFT one, they launch it,
- 1:56then they're like, oh wait, it exploded.
- 1:58Nope, we're bringing it back. So they land it, you know, like
- 2:01they do, just basically a reverse of the of the rocket
- 2:04landing and they show all the cool new stuff for IFT 2, the
- 2:08new rocket, the new booster. They show the people which is
- 2:11really cool, They shoe a cyber truck which is pulling a Raptor
- 2:15engine down the road. No big deal.
- 2:17It's just flying down the road Hwy. 4.
- 2:19And then we have some we have some test shots here.
- 2:22There's a re stack of the of the ship and the booster and then
- 2:27they're like we're ready to go. And maybe they are you know all
- 2:33the ground system seem like they're OK.
- 2:35Everything seems all right. Friday the 17th seems like a
- 2:39good day to do it because let's take a look at the weather here,
- 2:42the weather for South Padre Island, it's it's pretty close.
- 2:45It's like a couple miles away today, really bad showers and
- 2:48windy. So they de stacked the ship from
- 2:50the booster which is smart and then tonight 50% chance of
- 2:55showers and windy. So they de stacked and they're
- 2:56going to have to re stack it and do a final fit check before they
- 2:59actually launch the thing and they'll probably do that
- 3:02tomorrow. So mostly cloudy and breezy
- 3:04tomorrow 70 and I don't want to be a weather person here and get
- 3:08into the weather, but Friday looks like a great day for
- 3:11launch. Sunny 73 degrees, that's a high
- 3:17of 73. That's a perfect launch day.
- 3:19If you're gonna watch a launch at South Padre Island or at Boca
- 3:23Chica area like you want it to be this day.
- 3:26This looks beautiful. But the other day, let's just
- 3:30take a look at the highway foreclosures.
- 3:33There's no closures yet for November 17th.
- 3:37I haven't seen any yet. Maybe they post something in the
- 3:39background. Let me do a little a hard
- 3:41refresh here. They didn't do anything.
- 3:43Possible closure on the 15th. So the 15th could be, you know,
- 3:47anything. You know, at this point, they
- 3:49could be moving something from the Rocket Garden.
- 3:53They could be doing anything. But it's not a launch, right?
- 3:55So 12:00 AM to 2:00 PM on the 15th, it's not going to be a
- 4:00launch final regulatory approval for SpaceX November 17th,
- 4:06pending final regulatory approval.
- 4:07All right. So let's take a look at some one
- 4:10more thing that SpaceX posted on X the other day.
- 4:15And this is pretty important because they posted a live
- 4:21stream that's coming up in the, you know, in the future, which
- 4:25is on the 17th. And they posted a potential live
- 4:28stream at like 7:30 in the morning, right.
- 4:31And they had like the the placeholder and everything and
- 4:33you could click through to it and you could see that there was
- 4:36going to be a live stream on the 17th and now the broadcast has
- 4:39ended. It is gone.
- 4:40Starship second flight test is no longer on the 17th.
- 4:45The chat was available, everything was available and now
- 4:48there's no schedule for it. So we're just kind of here going
- 4:52like, OK, what's going on SpaceX, you said that it might
- 4:57be on the 17th, keep your broadcast up if you think it's
- 5:00going to be on the 17th. So maybe they heard something,
- 5:04maybe the regulatory approval is going to take a while.
- 5:06The Fish and Wildlife Service still has to check off those
- 5:10boxes for SpaceX to get final regulatory approval and then
- 5:13they send it over to the FAAFA looks at all, looks all over it.
- 5:17And SpaceX, they all work together in a cohesive unit as a
- 5:21team. They say, OK cool, we're going
- 5:24to do this together Now. The next thing that would
- 5:27happen, that is from the San Antonio Express News.
- 5:31There's another piece of news that came out just earlier
- 5:35today, I believe. But this is about, this is some
- 5:39some political stuff. So it's kind of funny because
- 5:44people really want this launch to happen, and some people want
- 5:47it to launch more than other people want it to launch. the US
- 5:50representative Tony Gonzalez. And said Gonzalez sent the
- 5:54letter Friday to agency director Martha Williams calling for
- 5:58timely environmental review of the company's launch operations.
- 6:02OK, so they have some good points here.
- 6:04And I want to talk about the good points, but I also want to
- 6:06kind of giggle at the silly stuff that they say because we
- 6:11have to tell the truth here. the United States is currently in a
- 6:14space race with the rest of the world.
- 6:15We kind of are. We want to get back to the moon.
- 6:18China wants, is China's going back to the moon.
- 6:20China has a space station Now, you know, Russia's in the mix
- 6:23there. And like the whole rest of the
- 6:25world is kind of coming on board with this whole, with a new
- 6:28space race thing, right. And the federal government
- 6:31should not hinder public companies as they develop and
- 6:34push United States to remain a leader in the space exploration
- 6:38realm. OK?
- 6:40It is of the utmost importance that Fish and Wildlife Service
- 6:44makes their environmental review decision sooner rather than
- 6:48later. OK, so I understand that.
- 6:51And that's totally cool. Make your decision soon.
- 6:54Please. Just go through the system, make
- 6:57sure you check off all the boxes, everything is cool, and
- 7:00then you can launch the Starship.
- 7:02It's the last regulatory hurdle SpaceX has to clear before the
- 7:05Federal Aviation Administration can issue a new launch license.
- 7:08And then they go on to say and this is the funny part, which
- 7:13it's it's true ish, you know, And it's one of those things
- 7:19where you're like you look at this and you go, hey, you don't
- 7:23have the right idea, dude. SpaceX is one of the largest
- 7:27employers in the Rio Grande Valley, which of course is true
- 7:291700 people ever employed there. Not only in this is, this is a
- 7:33whole other thing, but not only do these people work there, like
- 7:37717 hundred people work there, but every one of them buys
- 7:41things in the Rio Grande Valley. Everything everybody has like
- 7:45services done in the Rio Grande Valley, like they get gas in
- 7:49their cars, whatever, whatever it is they take flights out of
- 7:52BRO. But it is a major economic
- 7:56driver in the area. We, yeah, totally, 100%
- 8:00understand a further delay in the environmental review will
- 8:02continue to harm the small businesses and tourism industry
- 8:06of South Texas. The fear.
- 8:09The fear. OK, everyone calm down.
- 8:14I love, I love politicians. How they make this seem like a
- 8:18horrible thing. No, it's not a horrible thing.
- 8:21Yes, people will go to this launch.
- 8:23Yes, it'll be a great thing to watch, but no one's losing their
- 8:27jobs because of this. A further delay just means that
- 8:30more people are going to work on other things at SpaceX while
- 8:33they're just waiting around, right?
- 8:35So they're going to work on other boosters, they're going to
- 8:37work on other ships and everything's the economy doesn't
- 8:40stop there. So it's funny how they do this
- 8:44and like, I find the humor in in some politics because some of
- 8:49these people are just insane. So it it makes no sense.
- 8:53They're trying to pressure the Fish and Wildlife Service to get
- 8:56this done faster because of their agenda and it it, you
- 8:59know, because they want to look good or whatever.
- 9:01And I have no problem with these people.
- 9:06McAllen, Democrat, Gonzalez, San San Antonio Republican.
- 9:10Other The other Gonzalez greatly impacts Spacex's operations in
- 9:14South Texas and potentially hurts the region's economy here.
- 9:19And which I understand, right? They're building a rocket now
- 9:23and if they have to wait another, you know, till March to
- 9:27launch this thing or February or March to launch this thing, it
- 9:30does take a little while. And they they will be hindering
- 9:35some potential progress from SpaceX, right?
- 9:40And nobody wants SpaceX to fail, and they won't fail if they have
- 9:44to wait a couple months. They've waited 15 years for
- 9:48Starship to be built. A couple months is no big deal.
- 9:52People are impatient and myself included, I'm a little bit
- 9:56impatient. I want this thing to launch
- 9:58yesterday, but you have to look at it from all angles.
- 10:03You can't just look at it from. I'm a fan of SpaceX, so this has
- 10:07to happen. Now you have to think of it
- 10:08from, hey, there's there's federal regulatory bodies that
- 10:12like help out. If these federal regulations
- 10:15weren't in place, things and people, animals, environment,
- 10:20infrastructures could be damaged and they have to go through
- 10:24their whole system and it could probably be better.
- 10:28You know, people could put systems in place where these
- 10:32regulatory bodies get through these processes faster and with
- 10:37the same amount of accuracy and cadence that they do now, but
- 10:43not the cadence, But they could have a faster cadence than they
- 10:46do now. All right.
- 10:47So hopefully, hopefully they get this done as soon as possible.
- 10:53And this pressure, it's funny the the pressure from this area
- 10:57here, like, it just makes me laugh.
- 10:59These people are a little bit out there, ready or not.
- 11:03The agency didn't immediately respond Saturday to questions
- 11:05about the congressional letter, but Buzek said Wednesday the
- 11:09agency was still working on its review.
- 11:12So they posted it on Friday and they're hoping to get a
- 11:15response. But of course, like, these
- 11:20people don't work on the weekends, so you're not going to
- 11:22get a response. I mean, come on, it's a it's an
- 11:25office job, so you're not going to work on the weekends and it's
- 11:28a government office job. So unless you have, unless you
- 11:33have some sort of contract where you do work on weekends, but
- 11:36most people in the government are off on the weekends.
- 11:39So in there they go on to say billions of government
- 11:44contracts. They working with NASA, It's
- 11:45Artemis program, of course, like Artemis 3 is coming up, so we
- 11:49need Starship. They need hundreds of starships
- 11:51to launch before they launch people into space.
- 11:54That's what the SpaceX CEO has said in the past.
- 12:00And Gwen Shotwell has said, hey, we need to launch a bunch of
- 12:03these things before we put people on them.
- 12:05It's not safe until we do that. And Bill Nelson says it is
- 12:11essential to us, the SpaceX be able to test the rocket.
- 12:14That's cool too. You just, that's all you need to
- 12:16say. You don't have to say, well,
- 12:17this is going to hurt the economy I am given, he
- 12:20continued. I'm given to believe that they
- 12:22are going to get the approval of Fish and Wildlife and therefore
- 12:24the FAA. We're all we know this.
- 12:27I don't know the timing, but of course a major delay would be a
- 12:29very considerable concern to NASA.
- 12:31So a major delay for something like this would be six months,
- 12:36two months, not that big of a deal because they're still
- 12:40working on other rockets and if they get so this is, this is the
- 12:44long term thing, right? If they get this Fish and
- 12:48Wildlife approval and they get the FAA approval, the next one
- 12:53will be faster because this is about the new FAA approval is
- 12:57mainly about the new sprinkler system under the rocket and the
- 13:02new sound, the water suppression system underneath the rocket.
- 13:05So once they figure that out, and that goes through the system
- 13:09and they can move forward with other other launches faster than
- 13:14what this one was. So it's only been a little bit
- 13:18since the last launch since IFT 1.
- 13:20So we all just have to be patient.
- 13:21We all have to hang out. We'll have to just wait.
- 13:23On Friday's Starship watchers shared photos of SpaceX
- 13:25employees apparently installing explosives on the Starship
- 13:28Redesigned flight termination system.
- 13:31That happened. They did the flight termination
- 13:33system too. That's pretty cool.
- 13:35So that shows that SpaceX is just ready to go and they're
- 13:39just waiting for this federal, federal regulatory approval to
- 13:41happen. So that's about it for for this
- 13:47right now. But it looks like SpaceX may
- 13:49know something that we don't know because this broadcast has
- 13:53ended. Let me let me let me do
- 13:56something real quick, see if, yeah, I had to refresh and make
- 14:00sure that all my plug insurance were off just to make sure that
- 14:03this works properly. But it looks like SpaceX doesn't
- 14:07have anything planned for the for the foreseeable future.
- 14:11Maybe not Friday, maybe they're not.
- 14:13They do keep posting these hype videos, which is great, but
- 14:18maybe they don't have a plan for Friday anymore because that
- 14:21video's been taken down. I I really wish they did, but I
- 14:26don't see it happening. I don't see it happening unless
- 14:30they get approval like in the next two days.
- 14:34And if they get the approval in the next two days, today they
- 14:37have de stacked ship and they'll have to re boost it back up on
- 14:41top of the booster. And once they do that and
- 14:44they'll do a fit check for about a, you know, test the systems
- 14:47for a little bit, make sure everything's working, that'll
- 14:49take about a day and then they'll get prepped with the
- 14:52ground systems and things like that.
- 14:53That'll take a couple days and then they could launch Friday,
- 14:57Saturday, Sunday. So if that happens within the
- 14:59next few days, let's go. They still need a they still
- 15:03need a launch license, though. Remember that.
- 15:05So if the Fish and Wildlife Service come through and the FAA
- 15:08finds it, good, then they launch licenses next.
- 15:11So hoping, hoping for Friday, hoping for Friday.
- 15:16But maybe it'll be next week, maybe it'll be the week after
- 15:19that. So we just have to sit tight.
- 15:21That's just basically what it spaceflight is just hold on and
- 15:25wait, you know, like, let's go forward, but let's also wait.
- 15:29So that's it for today, everybody.
- 15:33Thank you so much for watching. Join the flight crew.
- 15:36Hit the subscribe button. I don't ask for it much.
- 15:38So if you watch this whole thing, please hit the subscribe
- 15:41button. And if you're really into Space
- 15:42Flight, make sure to hit the membership button to join us.
- 15:48And that'll help continue the show and continue the channel
- 15:50because we're we have some cool things planned for the future.
- 15:53Now if you subscribe to the channel, it's doesn't just help
- 15:56me out because it's, you know, it's great that you're here and
- 15:58I'm really happy that you're here.
- 15:59But YouTube will see that and put you in the algorithm of more
- 16:03Space Flight news in the future. So you'll get that stuff in your
- 16:07feed, you get more Space Flight not only from me but from other
- 16:10channels too. So I want to say thank you so
- 16:13much for watching today and thank you for subscribing and
- 16:16being part of this channel. Give it a thumbs up, give it a
