- 0:00[SPEAKER_11]: What we do is if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do, put it up to 11, exactly.
- 0:07[SPEAKER_09]: One round.
- 0:07[SPEAKER_09]: One which is just make 10 louder and make 10 be the top number and make that a little louder.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_11]: These cards are to 11.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_24]: Hello and welcome once again to the cinephiles where each week we enter the world of a great film we explore its themes, the history, the filmmaking, and the influence it has on us today.
- 0:33[SPEAKER_24]: My name is Steve Morrison, it's filmmaker and directing instructor in Los Angeles, California.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_23]: Hello, my name is John Rokam, a writer producer and host and voiceover artist here in San Diego, California, and avid, fan of Heavy Metal Rock.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_24]: after after what seemed like months, years, eons of exploring the difficult, fascinating, exciting, thrilling, violent, and occasionally upsetting world of Quentin Tarantino.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_24]: We have escaped, and we've gone as far as we possibly can away from that.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_24]: And I don't think we could have ever conceived of going on this journey without our very special guest, one of our favorite people, a friend of the show,
- 1:14[SPEAKER_24]: animation executive and producer Michael Ross.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_24]: Welcome back to the cinephiles.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_03]: I never, I never thought I would have to follow Quentin Tarantino, but that this is good.
- 1:25[SPEAKER_03]: This is the low expectations.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_24]: I guess not at all.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_24]: I think I look, I think there's going to be in the history books.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_24]: There will be essays, PhD doctoral dissertations written on the comparison between Quentin Tarantino and Michael Ross.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, it's great.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_03]: Our anger, mostly our anger issues or what?
- 1:48[SPEAKER_24]: Yes, yes, yes.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_24]: All sorts of things, your senses of humor, your anger issues, the propensity to violence and racial slurs, all of that stuff.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_03]: Well, I want to start today because you know, the big thing right now is is AI and bots chat GPT.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_03]: I've been using a lot to write all my scripts and I actually asked a chat.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_03]: I actually asked chapy GPT.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_03]: I said, I'm gonna it's been a little while since I've been on the show.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_03]: I'm a little nervous John and Steve were becoming more popular.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_03]: I knew them when, but becoming more popular.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_03]: I need help
- 2:28[SPEAKER_03]: They said, start with a joke.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_03]: Why did the movie theater stop selling nachos?
- 2:33[SPEAKER_24]: I don't know why.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_03]: Because they are making too much noise during the quiet parts of the film.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_03]: It's a light-hearted joke that was like, and it might get a chuckle from John and Steve.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_03]: We'll look at your podcast appearance, Michael.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_24]: That's really great.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_24]: So what you don't know, Mike, is that we just released an epic conversation on how terrified we are on AI.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_24]: Yes.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_24]: On our Patreon page, it was 50 minutes the conversation about it.
- 3:07[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_03]: You don't have to be terrified anymore.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_24]: That was what I'm just going to say.
- 3:11[SPEAKER_24]: That joke wasn't that funny, and that may be feels so much better.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_23]: That makes me feel worse because it didn't do what it was intended to do was to create a funny joke and therefore went into its own direction and now we're all gonna die.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_24]: And I should say that we have, as I'm always prone to do buried the lead, we have not mentioned what the show is, and if so, if you don't look at the actual title of the show and this is just playing on a playlist, you don't know that the movie that we are about to do a deep dive in is 1984 Rob Reiner seminal classic genre creating film spinal tap.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_03]: who can I ask Michael Ross how did you first come to spinal tab so I kept thinking back because it's it's hard when you especially movies for the 80s I was born in 78 it feels like even less came out in 84 like that I saw when it first came out but that's not the truth because it was six I think I was probably a
- 4:15[SPEAKER_03]: Right?
- 4:16[SPEAKER_03]: Is that right, Matt?
- 4:17[SPEAKER_03]: I think so.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_24]: Yes.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_24]: Yes, that's the right one.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_03]: I want to say I was around 12 years old when I first saw VHS.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_06]: Oh, wow.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_03]: And I remember it was so funny because it's like I hated I hated like I was journey Chicago's next musical theater.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_03]: I'm like so I hated the music and I hated it so much.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_03]: loved the movie so much because it was just like nothing like this existed.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_03]: These people just it like it seemed so real that it was it was hard for me to realize it 12 like is it are they a real group is it as like came to find out it's gonna even have like DVD extras back then came to find out what they did a man it set me on that it it creating that genre it created a world
- 5:16[SPEAKER_24]: I really think I associate you with this so much like because like your sense of humor and your desire to create.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_24]: There have been so, you know, it's just to let you in on a little slice of what people don't know about our friendship.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_24]: There have been from the time I met you, these events that you created, like what was the award show?
- 5:36[SPEAKER_24]: It was the Flemies, the Flemies award show, there was spy the game, there was all of these things where it was like one long improv that we
- 5:45[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I mean, and it helped being surrounded by a bunch of people that are like, you know, again, friends have had forever that are just, yes, and that's, that's what's, I think so great about this film is just like the give and take like Christopher guest is so, for like he's so for it.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_03]: He's got all the jokes.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_03]: He's literally everything, every simple moment.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_03]: But then when you watch interviews with him or watching with the Academy Awards this year,
- 6:12[SPEAKER_03]: He's like, people talk over, he gets to talk over, he barely has a chance to like it.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_03]: And it's also he doesn't want to either, I've heard that about his personality, right?
- 6:22[SPEAKER_03]: But in those films, he's just, he's like, the shine, this, this unbelievable shining light.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_03]: And it's, it's through their friends and the friends being able to play along with that improv.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_03]: I just, I love.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_23]: John, how'd you first come to Spinal Tech?
- 6:36[SPEAKER_23]: You know, I'm a very complicated history with this movie to be honest with you, because I added the time when this film came out.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_23]: And I was a higher age than Ross when the film came out.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_23]: And I resisted the film because I had a friend to I grew up with who was big and to heavy metal.
- 6:50[SPEAKER_23]: And he,
- 6:51[SPEAKER_23]: I would go to his house in Virginia.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_23]: We would sit in his bedroom and listen and put on Iron Maiden and metal church and all the stuff that I was just not into at the time, you know, because I was like, hey, you got in the old diamond and he saw for our cousin.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_23]: It wasn't till later in my teens that I got into like Van Halen and Death Leopard and all this kind of shit and found my way back around.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_23]: I never fully went into the Iron Maiden Judas Priest section necessarily, but I certainly enjoyed some of the
- 7:20[SPEAKER_23]: metal and heavy metal that I that I and especially the hair metal that I got into there in the 80s so when I saw this film I was much older isn't like in my 20s and I rented it and I was like this is okay it wasn't that good.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_23]: Where you when you when you when you rented it where you alone or you was I was alone I was by myself watching it but I will say this watching at this time around as an older person.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_23]: having been through the wars creatively with people, having been through productions, been on shows, done stuff like the podcasts, all these kinds of things, it completely came alive for me this time around in a way that has never come around, come alive for me before.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_23]: And I understand now finally at this advanced age why people love this movie as much as they do.
- 8:06[SPEAKER_23]: I was laughing at everything.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_23]: And in fact, when it ended, I was like, wait, what?
- 8:09[SPEAKER_23]: This is only an hour and 20-some minutes.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_23]: So I just was just blown away this time around and that's why I'm even more excited to talk about the film.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_23]: Because I had trepidation going into it hadn't seen it in a number of years and seeing at this time around, I got everything that they were joking
- 8:27[SPEAKER_24]: So, well, and fortunately for you, John, there's like five hours of outtake of that member.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_03]: Are they really?
- 8:33[SPEAKER_24]: Oh, I'm like God knows.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_03]: You got to watch the four hour cut.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_24]: But I'll say I watch some of the, it's like I didn't watch all of it.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_24]: I was watching some of it and what's so funny is like we've had this conversation.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_24]: I promise I'll answer my own question in a moment, but but we we've had this conversation many times where in general John you always want to see, you know, movie you love you like give me all of it.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_24]: I want to see all the seeds and I'm always as to think like an editor going, no, no, if they cut it out, they cut it out for a reason and.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_24]: You probably, you know, I wouldn't want to see it and in most of the like a lot of the directors cuts and stuff like that we seen that's been the case where it's kind of like, yeah, this was out for a reason, what's weird about spinal tap and watch the out to it's just like the movie it's it's all it's as the stuff it's they they chose to tell a specific kind of story, but it's not like all that they're not great improvisers for the other three hours, you know,
- 9:29[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_24]: They're still great.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_24]: So, so here's how I came to the film and I'm actually have a a question for our younger viewers, which is it used to be that humans, like high school and college students would like get together in the same place and do the same thing.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_24]: And frequently there would be like a stack of VHS tapes that would be rented when you're in high school.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_24]: And those would be playing in the background.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_24]: And I'm wondering like, because everybody has their own
- 9:59[SPEAKER_24]: Does that happen?
- 10:00[SPEAKER_24]: Like, do you go to the person's house and have five movies playing all day in the background?
- 10:05[SPEAKER_24]: Ross is shaking me.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_24]: He said, no, I can't imagine.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_24]: No.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, no, these kids today.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_03]: No, it doesn't.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_03]: I said some disparity in your voice, the way you said that.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_03]: If Steve, no, it doesn't.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_03]: And I don't want to get too far off topic of it either, but it also like, it started reawakening like,
- 10:25[SPEAKER_03]: the the the the the pinnacle of DVDs and DVD.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_03]: This is one of the first DVDs that I own.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not gonna go off a little bit here for a second but it's literally my favorite thing.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_03]: The start screen.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_03]: So the the the time comes up.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_03]: Mmm.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_03]: It's about to happen.
- 10:42[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_03]: That's too big.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_03]: That's too big.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_03]: Can we make it smaller?
- 10:46[SPEAKER_03]: Can we make it smaller?
- 10:47[SPEAKER_03]: And literally for 10 minutes it's just them complaining about the title screen before you even press play to start the movie.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_03]: that doesn't happen, like the art of that and the passion for that anymore doesn't happen.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_03]: So this has to be, it's a movie that has to be passed on.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_03]: I think at this point, it was some fortunate.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_24]: Well, and this is why I asked you the question, John, if you saw it with people or saw it alone, because time and place for certain movies make a huge difference, and particularly for comedies.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_24]: And if I had watched Spinal Tap alone, I wouldn't have gotten it at all.
- 11:19[SPEAKER_24]: I would have just gone, you know, what is this?
- 11:21[SPEAKER_24]: But the way I saw it was in high school, someone was at someone's house and someone had put it in and I wandered into the room and I was watching and I remember I had no context for it whatsoever.
- 11:33[SPEAKER_24]: I was like, what was this?
- 11:35[SPEAKER_24]: And I remember the moment as I'm watching that I went Lenny, is that-
- 11:39[SPEAKER_24]: Lenny right because Michael because I grew up with happy days and live in Shirley and Michael McCain is Lenny and squeaky and I just like and I remember having and people are laughing and Joe and and quoting it because people didn't move many times and I hadn't and I'm like what what the fuck is happening here and it took me a while to get.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_24]: Oh, this is joke.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_24]: Well, and it's also because like each of you mentioned the kind of music that you're into, the kind of music that I was into in high school was oldies was I love I love I listen to the oldie stations and so like when they're doing give me some money and when they're doing listen to what the flower I mean like that was like a so sunk into what my sense of music history and I just and I remember and then but then I also got distracted so I didn't see the whole thing and so this was a movie that I saw in pieces.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_24]: multiple times before I actually sat down and it should just focus on and watch the movie.
- 12:34[SPEAKER_24]: And I also had the same experiences you did, John, watching it this time.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_24]: There was so many little nuances.
- 12:41[SPEAKER_23]: It was great.
- 12:41[SPEAKER_23]: And the thing is, I was watching it.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_23]: It's on TCM.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_23]: So if anybody wants to watch it and they have TCM, you can watch it streaming on TCM.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_23]: Mankowitz doesn't intro and an outro for it.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_23]: And he reveals in the outro that apparently there is a sequel in the works with
- 12:58[SPEAKER_23]: Yeah, it's both, they started in May 2022 talking about it.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_23]: And so we'll see if they come out, they still occasionally get together.
- 13:05[SPEAKER_23]: And I think another element of this, it's really interesting for us talking about the movie right now.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_23]: Right after the Peter Jackson get back documentary about the Beatles, it adds even more.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_23]: It had, I had even more to kind of, context to dive into when I was watching it this time around, which I thought was great.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_23]: So yeah.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_24]: good timing.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_24]: And I will say I said it before, I'm going to say it again, I'll probably say multiple times in this to say that this invented a genre, right under statement, because it's not just that all the Christopher guest movies come from this, it's not just that like, you know,
- 13:52[SPEAKER_03]: And 90% of it, I love, it doesn't, it feels in here.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I think the worst thing about improv television is when you're like, this is an improv.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_03]: Like, John, did you just make it, which was like, or Steve, like walking in and going, is this one?
- 14:13[SPEAKER_03]: am I watching reality right now?
- 14:15[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, because they also talk like when they would choke for shows, like dress this violence have nobody would know it's Chris for guests like really, like it's that like that believable and it's it's just it's so hard to do and when it's bad, it's it's really bad.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_23]: That's why documentary now, which is literally the grandchild of this thing, can work sometimes and not work sometimes.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_23]: It always depends on what they're profiling like they're they're version of the company documentary is maybe my favorite when they've ever done, but like because they lean into the fact that it's very natural.
- 14:51[SPEAKER_23]: And it's hard to capture the natural gift that is in the in spinal tap in those other shows or or mockumentary movies because yeah watching at this time again, I'm not there's so naturally really feels like you're just kind of happened to uncomfortably be there when all of this is going down.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_23]: And I think the gift was also surrounding them with people that are not that well known at the time or not that well known now even to add to the reality of it so you can even enjoy it now into 2023 as something that feels very realistic.
- 15:25[SPEAKER_24]: So I have some pre-production.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_24]: Michael McKinney and Christopher Gas they met in New York City in the late 60s.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_24]: They played music together.
- 15:33[SPEAKER_24]: Christopher Gas took gone to the New York High School of Music and Art.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_24]: And so he had studied classical music.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_24]: He'd studied the mandolin, which comes up in the film.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_24]: I mean, he played guitar with Arlo Guthrie, like they were in or adjacent to the late 60s music scene, you know.
- 15:50[SPEAKER_24]: And each of them are sort of becoming important, comedically, obviously, Michael McKeen gets cast as Lenny in Le Verne and Shirley.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_24]: They're involved in the National Lampoon.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_24]: That's the first time that Christopher Gess uses the name Nigel, is on a National Lampoon album.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_24]: It's the Lenny and squiggly album.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_24]: And then they worked with Rob Riner and Harry Sheer in the 1978 comedy sketch show called The TV Show.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_24]: I wonder if I watched any of this.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_24]: I don't think I did.
- 16:19[SPEAKER_03]: I definitely didn't.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_03]: I, well, you, you don't know what your, what your parents put you in front of when you were a baby.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_03]: But I, I, because I remember an energy from this from a while ago, maybe on the DVD, I could finally get like,
- 16:37[SPEAKER_03]: and support like this supposed to be a fog machine thing that happened at the end but the fog machine was not filled the right way so hot oil was like scolding them from like at the end of the sketch which want to turn into like just the the insanity of this band that is trying to be you know uh uh have its mark and just keeps getting disferspected as you know as they continue their journey.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_24]: Well and what happened I think was it was supposed it was a song they're doing a song they they written for the band spinal I think they had the name spinal tap at that point they did do the TV show yeah but then as the hot oil is dripping on them and the prop guys like trying to figure out how to fix it they basically were like we could either just get angry or start improvising so they're lying on the ground having hot oil dripping on them and then they just started talking and these characters it
- 17:31[SPEAKER_24]: fully formed and suddenly everyone is standing around them in hysterics as they just keep talking as these characters.
- 17:39[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 17:39[SPEAKER_24]: So they say, hey, let's make a movie out of this and they get, I saw different numbers.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_24]: I saw 10 grand.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_24]: I saw 20 grand at one point.
- 17:46[SPEAKER_24]: I saw 60 grand.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_24]: I'm not sure what it was, but this was seed money to write a script.
- 17:52[SPEAKER_24]: So they sit down to write a script.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_24]: Harry Scher, Rob Riner, Michael McKinney, Christopher Gast.
- 17:57[SPEAKER_24]: and they get nowhere.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_24]: They can't get anywhere, but they're still improvising with each other on this thing and then finally went, well, let's just shoot some stuff.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_24]: So they take their money that they got and they shot 20 minutes of a demo, many of which many of the scenes are actually in the film.
- 18:13[SPEAKER_24]: And as they have this 20-minute down row and they take it to one producer, after another say, we wanna make this movie out of improv and everyone just like, no, no, this doesn't make it's not funny, it doesn't make sense, you can't make a movie out of improv.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_24]: And finally, it sounds like the one person Rob Riner didn't really wanna go to, is his boss on all of the family is Norman Lear.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_24]: But everyone else has said no, so he goes to Norman Lear and this is my understand.
- 18:36[SPEAKER_24]: Norman Lear, one of the great heroes in my still around.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_24]: It's still 101, I think.
- 18:41[SPEAKER_24]: And he looks at it, it basically says, look, I don't really understand this, but I trust you guys.
- 18:47[SPEAKER_24]: Let's make this movie.
- 18:49[SPEAKER_03]: Wow.
- 18:50[SPEAKER_23]: Wow.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I was a guy.
- 18:52[SPEAKER_03]: No, it was someone anyone said, I trust you.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_03]: Go for it.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_03]: That was it.
- 18:58[SPEAKER_24]: Yep.
- 18:59[SPEAKER_24]: And it's, you know, it's a couple million dollars that Norman Lear puts out to get this movie made.
- 19:04[SPEAKER_24]: I'll just write a sitcom.
- 19:05[SPEAKER_24]: I'll just write it.
- 19:08[SPEAKER_24]: Exactly.
- 19:10[SPEAKER_24]: Well, and I think everyone listening knows this, but I think we have to state very clearly.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_24]: There really isn't a script.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_24]: Every line that is said is improvised by the actors, but they did they had outlines for the scene.
- 19:22[SPEAKER_24]: It was like, here's the information that you need to know, and this is sort of where the scene's going, and that's it.
- 19:27[SPEAKER_24]: And that is so much pressure on these actors.
- 19:30[SPEAKER_24]: Many of whom are unknown and to deliver what they needed to deliver.
- 19:35[SPEAKER_24]: By the way, do you do either views, have you guys watch some of the classic like rock documentaries like last waltz and don't look back and, oh yeah, yeah, because those are now coming out on criterion as well.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_23]: So they're much more cleaner and they're fun to watch and they've got great behind the scenes.
- 19:51[SPEAKER_23]: But there's that one, what's the decline of Western civilization?
- 19:55[SPEAKER_23]: There was that one and there's one that is set in the parking lot of a heavy metal concert and she is just
- 20:03[SPEAKER_23]: is I think it's a female director, a documentary director going around and just interviewing all these young kids.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_23]: And I think that's what they were using as kind of a bit of a basis or some of those interviews with the kids that you see or the teenagers or 20-year-olds that you see in those real interviews, aren't they?
- 20:19[SPEAKER_23]: Yeah, I think that's what I'm saying.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_23]: I wonder if they could pick some of that.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_24]: Yes.
- 20:23[SPEAKER_24]: That's it's so interesting because those there's some great documentaries and a lot of them like like give me shelters when
- 20:29[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, where they just sits back and you just kind of watch this thing unfold and it's a weird documentary that I had never seen it until maybe two years ago And when I finally watched it, I was like it hits you so hard in the end.
- 20:42[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, and watching that makes watching spinal tap better.
- 20:45[SPEAKER_24]: I think
- 20:46[SPEAKER_24]: um, the DP that they hired is Peter Smoker, who is a, was a documentary.
- 20:51[SPEAKER_24]: And what sounds like is in terms of his skills with the camera, like he knew when to pan over and what to see.
- 20:58[SPEAKER_24]: The only thing it sounds like he didn't have was a sense of humor.
- 21:01[SPEAKER_24]: He didn't mean he's like, I don't understand why this is funny, but I'm filming, doing a, doing a job filming this documentary.
- 21:08[SPEAKER_24]: Amazing.
- 21:13[SPEAKER_24]: So I know I said before, comedy's always hard because I wanna say every line and I'm definitely not gonna do that here.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_24]: I don't even know how to go about it because so much of this is like, they say everything totally straight and it's so in the reaction shots or the awkwardness.
- 21:30[SPEAKER_24]: So I don't know how I'm gonna describe it but what we're gonna do our best.
- 21:34[SPEAKER_24]: But the person that we start with was is Marty DeBurkey.
- 21:38[SPEAKER_08]: Hello, my name is Marty DeBurkey.
- 21:41[SPEAKER_08]: I'm a filmmaker.
- 21:43[SPEAKER_08]: I make a lot of commercials.
- 21:44[SPEAKER_24]: I didn't know where his name came from.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_24]: Oh, his name, Martin DeBurgie, is a tribute to Martin Scorsese, Brian DePama, Steven Spielberg, and either Antonio Niel or Felini, Martin DeBurgie.
- 22:00[SPEAKER_03]: And it sounds like something totally made like that.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_03]: He would have done, you made up and south too.
- 22:06[SPEAKER_23]: Yeah, right, the director of some of it.
- 22:09[SPEAKER_24]: I think that in addition to being the director and everyone who's listening to show knows my deep love of Rob Riner's director, I think his reaction shots at the unsung hero of this movie.
- 22:20[SPEAKER_03]: He's the unsung hero of the movie period, the amount of set, they know you can hear an interview.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_03]: So they talk about it.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_03]: He sets them up for success for almost every single one of the jokes in this fall.
- 22:32[SPEAKER_24]: He's so good.
- 22:33[SPEAKER_24]: And I love because this opening, which is him,
- 22:36[SPEAKER_24]: in order to see himself, brags about his commercials, and he's standing, it's such a perfect bad idea that you think is a good idea of a set up of like, well, I'm making a movie, and I'm doing my interest, so we should have lights and movie things, and then guitars and amps and music things that are in positions for no reason whatsoever except like put them here for this shot, so I look cool.
- 23:04[SPEAKER_23]: I'm gonna throw this out there and some of y'all might think I'm crazy, but I like in it to this time I'm watching it, right?
- 23:10[SPEAKER_23]: I like in it to the opening of Henry the fifth
- 23:13[SPEAKER_23]: with their Jacobi walking in and essentially laying the groundwork right or the beginning of Romeo and Juliet when he comes out and says two households, both alike and fair of corona, essentially laying the scene and giving you the vibe of what you're going to get.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_23]: This guy does the same thing as Derek Jacobi does at the beginning of 105 walking through the sets that are not lived in yet and just talking about what he's going to do, what you're going to see what this is all about, so even within the comedy and great comedy,
- 23:42[SPEAKER_23]: has incredible intelligence behind it and very literary intelligence behind it.
- 23:47[SPEAKER_23]: I would not be surprised if this was a little bit inspired by some Shakespeare stuff at the beginning.
- 23:53[SPEAKER_08]: In 1966, I went down to Greenwich Village, New York City to a rock club called Electric Banana.
- 24:00[SPEAKER_24]: Sorry, it's already funny.
- 24:02[SPEAKER_24]: It's not there anymore, you can't.
- 24:06[SPEAKER_08]: But that night,
- 24:07[SPEAKER_08]: I heard a band that for me redefined the word rock and roll.
- 24:12[SPEAKER_08]: I remember being knocked out by their exuberance, their raw power, and their punctuality.
- 24:21[SPEAKER_24]: So Michael Ross, can you explain that joke to me?
- 24:27[SPEAKER_24]: Because that is fucking funny, but I don't know why.
- 24:37[SPEAKER_02]: You delivered that really well Steve.
- 24:43[SPEAKER_03]: It's like it's comedy and you mentioned three things, right?
- 24:46[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_03]: Okay, comedy and three is first, first and save again.
- 24:50[SPEAKER_08]: I remember being knocked out by their, their exuberance, their raw power, and their punctuality.
- 24:57[SPEAKER_03]: Who gives a shit?
- 24:59[SPEAKER_24]: but it's something it's something that for him as a director he was probably like it's great and they were on time like they were on time so they're not to worry about that either you know it's like he had nothing he had to think of three things that was the best third compliment he could get that well what I would love to is that punctuality by definition kind of has to come first like you can't be not going to function with punctuality last because they showed up on time well what's so funny to and this is I wanted to focus on
- 25:29[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, which is you hear him say the thing and it sounds perfectly normal.
- 25:33[SPEAKER_24]: And then like a moment later you go, what what what but by that point you're already on to another thing, right, you know, that's what's great about all all these things, right, is that you.
- 25:46[SPEAKER_03]: And I think why it'd be hard for somebody that's never seen these before, if you were on your phone, if you were doing something else, if you want to do anything but paying attention to this film, then you are, you'll be stupid going through it, you just you'll be an idiot going through it, you gotta be paying attention every single moment.
- 26:04[SPEAKER_23]: You'll miss the small moments that are going to make you double over and last you catch it and right the punctuality is perfect because what a rock bands known for being three hours late to a gig or two hours late for they walk out on stage or whatever right so what they're laying the groundwork again for how they are not actually a.
- 26:23[SPEAKER_23]: from beginning full heavy metal kind of band and we'll see going forward, you know, what they start out as and what they turn into and when they become.
- 26:31[SPEAKER_23]: But the fact that their punctual means that still element of them is existing in them and that's why they haven't and they've never fully gotten over.
- 26:40[SPEAKER_23]: as a heavy metal band and we're going to see that throughout the whole movie.
- 26:44[SPEAKER_24]: Well, and the other thing about them is I could totally compare them to Python in this sense, which is that Python are brilliant scholars who when they did life of Brian or what they did the Holy Grail, they did like real research and really are referencing real stuff.
- 26:59[SPEAKER_24]: There's so much love for the history of rock and roll in this move, you know, whether it's like like looking at early beaches and seeing where the beaches evolved to are early bowie or they're all these bands that were actually around in the late 60s and then evolve through the 70s and went through all these stages.
- 27:16[SPEAKER_24]: And of course, which we'll get into is all the references to dying drummers and all, you know, all of that stuff 37 37 man members.
- 27:24[SPEAKER_08]: Yeah 37.
- 27:26[SPEAKER_08]: That ban was Britain's now legendary spinal tap.
- 27:29[SPEAKER_08]: 17 years and 15 albums later, spinal tap is still going strong.
- 27:36[SPEAKER_08]: And they've earned a distinguished place in rock history as one of England's loudest bands.
- 27:42[SPEAKER_24]: Does Marty DeBurkey like spinal tap?
- 27:47[SPEAKER_23]: That's a good question.
- 27:48[SPEAKER_23]: I don't know.
- 27:49[SPEAKER_23]: I really don't know.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_03]: It's like you've got your ABC and D list, right?
- 27:54[SPEAKER_03]: You know where your talent is in terms of like you've directed commercials.
- 27:57[SPEAKER_03]: You're going to kind of chase after the ones you know you can get.
- 27:59[SPEAKER_03]: He knows he can get them.
- 28:01[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, I think he had this great idea that he was going to do Zeppelin or he was going to do, you know, and that fell through and then another one fell through and he ended with spinal tap and he's like, oh, no, I think it was more like he pitched them, yes, like they're still and they were like, no, no, we're going to go with a better director and so the best he could get coming out of commercials was spinal tap.
- 28:23[SPEAKER_24]: I think that's what happened to Berge.
- 28:24[SPEAKER_24]: We get what the setup is, which is that they're having their first tour in US tour in six years, and that he jumped at the chat chance to make a documentary, and then I'd love to.
- 28:34[SPEAKER_08]: I wanted to capture the sights, the sounds, the smells, of a hard-working rock band on the road, and I got that, but I got more, a lot more, and then the classic line.
- 28:49[SPEAKER_24]: But hey, enough of my yacking.
- 28:51[SPEAKER_24]: Well, what do you say?
- 28:53[SPEAKER_24]: Let's buggy.
- 28:57[SPEAKER_03]: So funny.
- 28:58[SPEAKER_03]: Apparently, again, it's like the ego, God.
- 29:03[SPEAKER_03]: And again, that's why he fits perfectly with these guys, too, is they're just, and I think all the Chris forgets movies in the office, and all these things is like, there's a reason people want to be filmed.
- 29:14[SPEAKER_03]: There's a reason for my family, their own, they have to be so self-centered,
- 29:21[SPEAKER_03]: no matter who you are and that's gotta shine through and I think that's what we love the most at.
- 29:26[SPEAKER_24]: Apparently, a whole bunch of executives when they saw the first cut said, can you please do something where you like wink at the camera?
- 29:33[SPEAKER_24]: Like at the beginning of the movie, airplane, where there's like the jaws moment, where the fin comes through the cloud, because we're really worried people aren't gonna know this is a comedy.
- 29:41[SPEAKER_24]: Like you need to tell people it's a comedy, so they can know the laugh and their responses like, look, if they don't get it, we can't make them get it.
- 29:50[SPEAKER_24]: And so we go to titles,
- 29:55[SPEAKER_24]: And we have our first shots of the band and and wroteies of the giant skull and we see Bruno Kirby for the first time.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_24]: Oh God.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_24]: And we go into their first song.
- 30:11[SPEAKER_24]: One of my favorite things are Michael McKeen is singing and I love that they show the titles and it says David St. Hubbins, lead guitar, Nigel Tuffnell, lead guitar.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_24]: That's a fantastic rock and roll joke.
- 30:28[SPEAKER_24]: I told you so much about this band, so true.
- 30:31[SPEAKER_24]: And can we just take like a moment to respect the mustache of Derek's mom?
- 30:37[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I mean, that is.
- 30:41[SPEAKER_03]: That's commitment.
- 30:43[SPEAKER_03]: And the outputs, too.
- 30:44[SPEAKER_03]: With Harry's year or two, it's just how his body in the whole movie is just so weird.
- 30:52[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, of course.
- 30:54[SPEAKER_24]: It's funny to think that Harry Sure, I am assuming, is 10 times richer than anybody else who's in this movie, probably, probably, I mean.
- 31:04[SPEAKER_03]: And as the one that led the lawsuit, which I'm sure we'll get to live on as well.
- 31:09[SPEAKER_03]: Like I look where I'm on, do you need brothers?
- 31:12[SPEAKER_24]: Um, and they finished their song in a classic heavy metal tongues out sort of way cheers to the crowd and then we cut to this interview footage where I think it's in front of like a castle and you know that's like I think the shot in Altadina all this is shot in LA by the way all the things about Cleveland and you know Pittsburgh and you know it's all shot around LA.
- 31:30[SPEAKER_09]: I understand Nigel you and David.
- 31:33[SPEAKER_24]: originally started the band back in when was it 1964 and this is the first time we really hear them talking and it's like a master class.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_11]: We were full of that we were in different groups.
- 31:43[SPEAKER_11]: I was in a group called the Creatures.
- 31:44[SPEAKER_11]: I was from a skiffle group.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_11]: I was in lovely lads and we looked at each other and said it was well joined up.
- 31:52[SPEAKER_11]: So we became the originals.
- 31:55[SPEAKER_24]: John, I'm sure you think about you know John and Paul meeting all the late
- 32:00[SPEAKER_23]: Well, that's why I think the joke is the league guitar league guitar because both of those guys thought they led the Beatles, you know, John was always adamant that I led the Beatles, I asked Paul to be in the band, but Paul has always felt like I think secretly behind the scenes that he was the leader and certainly was the leader when everything was falling apart over the last two to three albums.
- 32:18[SPEAKER_23]: So yeah.
- 32:18[SPEAKER_23]: That's why I like the shades of the Beatles stuff that are here throughout.
- 32:22[SPEAKER_23]: I mean, those black and white pictures of them as kids are just genius and then that first song and that's another thing we should take a moment before we get to deep.
- 32:38[SPEAKER_23]: Unable amount of genius in Christopher Gast to doing this the soundtrack was like a best-selling soundtrack Because those songs that he created from scratch were great the folk songs he creates for a mighty wind are equally good for the particular genre.
- 32:51[SPEAKER_23]: I mean, it's just incredible what he's able to do and he's just tossing him off like For the movie, you know, whereas other people be like torture to create a next album He's just like moving on to the next thing and just as seems to effortlessly create these great.
- 33:04[SPEAKER_23]: I mean the lyrics are so fucking hilarious and good
- 33:07[SPEAKER_23]: And that's the genius of those lyrics.
- 33:10[SPEAKER_23]: There's another group in East End, cool in originals.
- 33:12[SPEAKER_11]: And we had to rename ourselves and new originals.
- 33:16[SPEAKER_11]: Then they became the regulars.
- 33:18[SPEAKER_11]: They changed their name back to the regulars.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_11]: We thought, well, we could go back to the originals about what's the point.
- 33:24[SPEAKER_03]: and supposedly when they've been interviewed and they remember it, they remember, you got like 30 to 50 different names of like, one's like a Jewish folk band, like what the name of the band was for that too, and they remember it, that's the thing is like what this movie is like, they've built as actors should, like this entire rich history over a year and half of it doesn't even make it a little film.
- 33:48[SPEAKER_24]: We should point out too, is that they have to do that because there are people out there, you know, we talk about like the geek buddies who are experts on all things geek.
- 33:56[SPEAKER_24]: There are people who know every single fact about spinal tab, every band member, everywhere they played, every different name, every song, every lyric.
- 34:05[SPEAKER_24]: And so if the guys doing one of their improvs gets one of those details wrong.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_24]: You have all these spinal tap nerds who are going to be upset about it.
- 34:14[SPEAKER_24]: And then we cut to, they've changed their name to the Tenzman, and we cut to our archival footage of them on pop, look, and listen, doing give me some money.
- 34:24[SPEAKER_00]: Give me some money.
- 34:30[UNKNOWN]: Give me some money.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_24]: This song is good.
- 34:33[SPEAKER_24]: It is a perfect, you know, middling British invasion mid 60 song.
- 34:40[SPEAKER_03]: And but you know what we died.
- 34:43[SPEAKER_03]: We we were born at four times Michael McKeeam does he's doing this thing with his eye too Yeah, it's like halfway and halfway I'm like with a with a mopy hair on my dear god die every time that scene every time And the you know 12 seconds of Ed Beggley junior point in the show
- 35:04[SPEAKER_24]: Well, this is the thing, and it is, for what I've read, Rob Reiner and Penny Marshall's house in the Hollywood Hills in the late 70s was the Mecca for comedy, oh, I bet.
- 35:17[SPEAKER_24]: They were having parties five nights a week and everyone, Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, everybody came to that, that was the place to be.
- 35:27[SPEAKER_24]: And so a lot of these people that are in this movie are the people, the funniest people
- 35:33[SPEAKER_24]: I'll take them small parts too, isn't correct?
- 35:35[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 35:36[SPEAKER_24]: And unfortunately, the reason we only see in the beginning, you're for a little while, is that his character, John Stumpy Peppies, died.
- 35:45[SPEAKER_11]: He died in a bizarre gardening accident, something that's back.
- 35:49[SPEAKER_11]: It's really one of those things.
- 35:51[SPEAKER_11]: It was, you know, the authority said, you know, best leave it, you know, it's not so.
- 35:56[SPEAKER_24]: Unsold, you know, you know,
- 35:59[SPEAKER_24]: Again, watch Rob Reiner's reaction shots.
- 36:03[SPEAKER_24]: It's rubbish all the time.
- 36:06[SPEAKER_24]: I don't know who plays the funniest version of not too bright in the world.
- 36:13[SPEAKER_24]: But Christopher guest, it's, it's amazing.
- 36:17[SPEAKER_03]: Well, because what he does too is it's more of like a, he is so committed in his mind that he is right.
- 36:24[SPEAKER_03]: And he's so friggin' wrong.
- 36:26[SPEAKER_03]: It's, it's, it's, it's brilliant.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 36:29[SPEAKER_24]: Well, and the thing too, I think that Nigel is a good musician, like he is talented musician.
- 36:36[SPEAKER_24]: And he has been a rock star, so of course he's right, you know, right, I'm good at this and people cheer me.
- 36:43[SPEAKER_24]: Therefore, I must know a lot about fatal gardening accidents or anything.
- 36:48[SPEAKER_24]: And this is, and we hear that the next drummer that we replace is him is Stumpy Joe.
- 36:59[SPEAKER_13]: It was actually someone else's woman.
- 37:03[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, God.
- 37:04[SPEAKER_23]: That's a whole thing.
- 37:06[SPEAKER_23]: We could never, we never were able to find out who's vomit it was.
- 37:09[SPEAKER_23]: You can't dust for vomit.
- 37:10[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, that's vomit.
- 37:11[SPEAKER_23]: Oh, my God.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_24]: Which by the way, it's true.
- 37:14[SPEAKER_24]: I mean, you can't dust for vomit.
- 37:16[SPEAKER_24]: And then we headed to our party in New York City and meet Fran Drescher, who they apparently didn't know her before this.
- 37:26[SPEAKER_24]: I think she auditioned.
- 37:30[SPEAKER_24]: And by the way, one of the things they did, they really tried to always use the first take because it's the first take when everybody's reactions, because they didn't know where it was going and the reactions are really, really honest.
- 37:51[SPEAKER_23]: president of sag now if you can believe that no weird craziness man.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_23]: So yeah, I mean, she does such a wonderful job as one of those hostesses and all that kind of you've got them.
- 37:59[SPEAKER_23]: You don't talk so much.
- 38:00[SPEAKER_23]: You get to come over.
- 38:01[SPEAKER_23]: You got to meet this guy.
- 38:03[SPEAKER_23]: And then she brings over the regalness of Patrick and me from the Avengers there to come in the original Avengers, you young kids, the original Avengers on the for the British stuff to come over and play an
- 38:17[SPEAKER_23]: just so brilliant the way it all kind of plays out and everybody's moving around each other.
- 38:21[SPEAKER_23]: It's going to be feels so real, you know?
- 38:24[SPEAKER_24]: And because this is a hip, New York, rock and roll party, naturally, all the caterers, the servers, passing our girls, our minds, and the first one we see is Dana Carvey.
- 38:37[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, Dana Carvey and this is one where I mean, I didn't when I saw this movie I didn't there was no Dana Carvey You know, I probably saw a six and I don't I he probably started in SNL a couple of years after this and you have Billy Crystal who I certainly knew who Billy Crystal was And his line which is just so goddamn perfect.
- 38:57[SPEAKER_04]: Come on don't talk back, huh?
- 38:58[SPEAKER_04]: My miss money.
- 38:59[SPEAKER_04]: Let's go.
- 38:59[SPEAKER_04]: Come on.
- 39:00[SPEAKER_04]: Move it.
- 39:03[SPEAKER_24]: Minus money is a fucking it's said in that harsh angry tone that's perfect.
- 39:10[SPEAKER_03]: This is one of those scenes you need to go look at because there's delete there's like a three minute deleted scene oh my god of Billy Crystal like prepping Dana Carvey to be like he's got too much meat on his plate and like how do you mind and like don't you go against or go against the
- 39:30[SPEAKER_23]: That is that is one that I wish I actually want to say in the film because it was just it was it's spectacular Well, just the quick shot of him going don't do the cat and the thing I I'm doing the cat I'm doing something something something else, which is genius, but I will say this team you with a daily Carmy think the film came out in 84 Dana Carme got on SN on 86 because I looked this up So I wonder of crystal who had been for that one fateful season on SNL with crystal for guests I wonder if he may be
- 39:57[SPEAKER_23]: In the interactions with Dana Carvey kind of gave him some pointers or tips to help him getting onto SNL.
- 40:04[SPEAKER_23]: I wonder, you know, but or it could just be these great comedic geniuses all kind of.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_23]: uh... at a young part in their lives hanging around each other doing small parts in this movie but it's great the way they interact with each other i mean can you imagine being in a circle where all of these people are going to go all of these places you know i mean for the nanny is one of those iconic ninety sick homes all because of frank pressure so you know there's so much comedic talent in a bagley you know there's so much comedic talent in this entire film
- 40:34[SPEAKER_24]: And the other thing that's great about this whole party scene is it's it seems exactly like you expect this to be and yet you can see the seeds right at the beginning of this is not going to go well.
- 40:45[SPEAKER_24]: It's towards going to we're going to have some problems.
- 40:47[SPEAKER_02]: And it ends
- 40:55[SPEAKER_03]: And by the way, we have all been, I mean, oh, yeah, marketing people, I guarantee you every market, sorry if you're marketing person's losing it.
- 41:04[SPEAKER_03]: This was like, yeah, that's brilliant.
- 41:07[SPEAKER_03]: Me, while the rest of us are going like, oh, yeah, good life.
- 41:12[SPEAKER_24]: It happens a lot.
- 41:14[SPEAKER_24]: We'll bring it up later, too.
- 41:15[SPEAKER_24]: But there's so much of like,
- 41:17[SPEAKER_24]: You can see the thing going wrong and you can even see even though our band is not the smartest people in the world, they can see it's going on.
- 41:25[SPEAKER_24]: Oh yeah.
- 41:26[SPEAKER_24]: And you just like, what can we do?
- 41:29[SPEAKER_24]: You know, the street little bit they can do.
- 41:32[SPEAKER_24]: We're in the limo with Bruno Kirby, who sees that one of the women is reading, yes I can.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_18]: You don't want to tell them about books you think?
- 41:42[SPEAKER_18]: Yes, I can, the French are not for sets, it's okay.
- 41:46[SPEAKER_18]: It was French girls, the shots were all always guys.
- 41:48[SPEAKER_24]: In the middle of him talking, they roll up that window separating the driver from the back seat.
- 41:54[SPEAKER_24]: It's just terribly rude.
- 41:56[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 41:57[SPEAKER_24]: What's so funny?
- 41:58[SPEAKER_24]: So my experience with Bruno Kirby was this good morning, Vietnam, when Harry Met Sally, I didn't go back and realize that's him in Godfather 2.
- 42:09[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, right.
- 42:10[SPEAKER_24]: It's a later until after I already knew who he was from these movies.
- 42:13[SPEAKER_24]: And so it's so funny to go like where his career, you know, this is six years after Godfather 2.
- 42:19[SPEAKER_24]: He's making this movie.
- 42:20[SPEAKER_24]: And he was playing literally the heavy as Clemenza and now he's doing this.
- 42:25[SPEAKER_24]: And then we go into the backseat where we meet for the first time, their manager, Ian Faith, which is Tony Hendra.
- 42:32[SPEAKER_24]: I didn't realize, apparently Tony Hendra attempted suicide the night before the first day of filming of Spinal Tab.
- 42:40[SPEAKER_24]: Holy shit.
- 42:41[SPEAKER_24]: And he says that the joy he experienced making the film is what brought him back from that depression.
- 42:47[SPEAKER_24]: Wow.
- 42:48[SPEAKER_24]: Wow.
- 42:48[SPEAKER_24]: Is that crazy?
- 42:51[SPEAKER_23]: It's incredible because he goes on to do so many things as a producer and a writer afterwards.
- 42:56[SPEAKER_23]: But those moments, those days, they grab you and if you can walk through them, as I say on my note, other shows you never know what's waiting for you on the other side, if you can just make it through a talk might like that, you know, so glad he did.
- 43:09[SPEAKER_23]: Yeah, I mean, and it's essential to the show.
- 43:11[SPEAKER_23]: Essential to the movie, I mean, oh, yeah.
- 43:13[SPEAKER_23]: You talk about Rob Reiner be the young son here or this guy, I mean, because he's not that well known
- 43:18[SPEAKER_23]: So you just watch in this guy and how he's interacting with everybody, the cricket bag of things we're going to get to him dealing with his girlfriend, the guy's girlfriend, all of that.
- 43:28[SPEAKER_23]: It just works so well.
- 43:30[SPEAKER_23]: I mean, him going after poor Paul Benedict at the hotel is just hilarious.
- 43:35[SPEAKER_23]: So there's so much about him that works in his film.
- 43:38[SPEAKER_24]: And I think one of the keys
- 43:40[SPEAKER_24]: is you have all these funny characters, is that he is not going for laughs.
- 43:45[SPEAKER_24]: No.
- 43:45[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 43:46[SPEAKER_24]: It's not that he's not funny, but he's never going for, he's never trying to be funny.
- 43:51[SPEAKER_24]: He is just in the scene.
- 43:53[SPEAKER_24]: Um, and in this particular scene, we're talking about heading to Philly and how the tour is going to go and that the album is going to be coming out.
- 44:00[SPEAKER_24]: and there you can see they're anxious about this album hitting the market and how it's going to handle during the tour.
- 44:05[SPEAKER_05]: So you are hitting that market.
- 44:07[SPEAKER_05]: We're doing that.
- 44:08[SPEAKER_05]: We're certainly doing.
- 44:10[SPEAKER_05]: I'm doing everything I can.
- 44:11[SPEAKER_24]: That is such a perfect line that contains multitudes of stuff he's not telling them.
- 44:19[SPEAKER_24]: You know, I'm certainly doing everything I can.
- 44:30[SPEAKER_24]: Big bottom.
- 44:34[SPEAKER_24]: May I do for you a dramatic reading of the lyrics?
- 44:38[SPEAKER_24]: Yes, it's long.
- 44:41[SPEAKER_24]: The bigger the cushion, the sweeter the cushion.
- 44:44[SPEAKER_24]: That's what I said.
- 44:45[SPEAKER_24]: The looser the waistband, the deeper the quicksand, or so I've read.
- 45:00[SPEAKER_23]: And I tell you, as I was watching at this morning in the living room, and Lily works from home just like I do my girlfriend.
- 45:07[SPEAKER_23]: I'm sorry, my life partner, I get to know what I'm saying, my life partner.
- 45:10[SPEAKER_23]: She looked up and she goes, what are you watching?
- 45:17[SPEAKER_24]: I was laughing so hard at these lyrics, man.
- 45:22[SPEAKER_24]: John, let me just say to you, big bottom, big bottom, and talk about bum cakes.
- 45:29[SPEAKER_24]: My gals got him, big bottom, drive me out of my mind.
- 45:33[SPEAKER_24]: And then the most brilliant line of the fall time is how can I leave this behind?
- 45:41[SPEAKER_24]: Those are two different meanings.
- 45:42[SPEAKER_24]: There are two meanings to that.
- 45:44[SPEAKER_24]: He could be leaving it or he could be calling it I behind that he doesn't want to leave.
- 45:51[SPEAKER_24]: Next level fucking genius.
- 45:53[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's the critics.
- 45:55[SPEAKER_03]: Again, he didn't not hit him, but like again, at 12 years, like again, 12 years old, or even the first time you're listening to it, you're just like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
- 46:19[SPEAKER_24]: B, it's also obviously a reference to fat bottom girls from Queen, which is also sort of like, and they don't know the great thing about spider tap is they're sincere, they don't they don't think this is funny, this is just like a love, like a erotic love song, you know.
- 46:37[SPEAKER_24]: But by the way, these guys are all musicians and they're all good musicians and they worked really hard to make sure they, this is dubbed, I mean like most musicals is they pre-recorded the tracks and they're playing back to playback.
- 46:53[SPEAKER_24]: But they really, really wanted to make sure they got every single piece of fingering on the instruments right that they're always playing it correctly because they didn't want that knock on them to be, they didn't really play this.
- 47:03[SPEAKER_24]: And then the editors get it.
- 47:04[SPEAKER_24]: And the editors, editors, we don't care about you.
- 47:07[SPEAKER_24]: And so they're just moving shots around because they think that's a good shot at that moment, even though the fingering on the instruments doesn't actually match the song and they come in to see the cut and they are fucking furious.
- 47:20[SPEAKER_24]: And they really, really push to get all those pieces to be correct, which I think is a hundred percent right.
- 47:27[SPEAKER_09]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 47:27[SPEAKER_09]: Let's talk about your reviews a little bit regarding intravenous to my life.
- 47:32[SPEAKER_09]: This tasteless cover is a good indication of the lack of musical invention within.
- 47:36[SPEAKER_09]: The musical growth rate of this band cannot even be charted.
- 47:40[SPEAKER_09]: They are trading water in a sea of retarded sexuality and bad poetry.
- 47:44[SPEAKER_10]: That's nitpicking, isn't it?
- 47:46[SPEAKER_24]: Now, John, you've done a lot of interviewing.
- 47:49[SPEAKER_24]: You've had actors and writers.
- 47:50[SPEAKER_24]: Do you generally like just read the worst possible reviews to the work and have them react to it?
- 47:57[SPEAKER_23]: Not if I want to interview the person again.
- 47:59[SPEAKER_23]: But I mean, that's perfect for a debugging because we don't get too much with the burger like on his own, right?
- 48:05[SPEAKER_23]: Confessionals or whatever.
- 48:06[SPEAKER_23]: So you're left to ponder why he makes this kind of decision.
- 48:10[SPEAKER_23]: So it's the opening is such a cheesy opening
- 48:16[SPEAKER_23]: clearly up his own ass thinking that he's creating something phenomenal.
- 48:20[SPEAKER_23]: He's just as bad as spinal tap.
- 48:22[SPEAKER_23]: He's just as out of touch without uncool.
- 48:25[SPEAKER_23]: He is in this whole thing and so it's great.
- 48:27[SPEAKER_23]: So when he's reading these things, is he doing this to get a reaction or is he doing this because he's so stupidly oblivious that he's saying these things that hurt these guys?
- 48:37[SPEAKER_23]: Michael McKin is the star of this scene.
- 48:39[SPEAKER_23]: His reactions to all these kinds of things are hilarious.
- 48:43[SPEAKER_23]: At the end where they're like, oh, they wouldn't print that.
- 48:45[SPEAKER_23]: They went, that's not true.
- 48:46[SPEAKER_03]: It's just genius to see Michael slowly microreacting to hold these little things that are coming as they get worse a shit sandwich or whatever.
- 49:06[SPEAKER_03]: If you haven't see go back and rewatch it, it's one of the only moments that both of those guys nearly break.
- 49:12[SPEAKER_09]: The review you had on Sharkstand, which was merely a two-word review, just said, Shit Sandwich.
- 49:20[SPEAKER_03]: That's a print.
- 49:21[SPEAKER_03]: What's that print?
- 49:22[SPEAKER_03]: That's no real.
- 49:23[SPEAKER_03]: Is it a print?
- 49:25[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 49:26[SPEAKER_03]: It went back.
- 49:27[SPEAKER_03]: I got rewatched.
- 49:28[SPEAKER_03]: I'm like, that's one of my favorite moments.
- 49:31[SPEAKER_03]: It's just rough.
- 49:32[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know where like shit sandwich.
- 49:37[SPEAKER_03]: It looks like a person and I made old who sold back a lot.
- 49:41[SPEAKER_24]: Well, and I could so see how Rob prepared for this because you know he wrote out those things ahead of time.
- 49:46[SPEAKER_24]: He's like, OK, I'm going to this is the first quote.
- 49:48[SPEAKER_24]: This is the second.
- 49:48[SPEAKER_24]: Well, and with shit sandwich, um, uh, and then we cut from there to what says recording industry convention at Land of Georgia.
- 49:58[SPEAKER_24]: It is clearly at the bottom of venture.
- 50:01[SPEAKER_24]: It's the most famous buildings in downtown Los Angeles.
- 50:07[SPEAKER_24]: and again we're talking about the album while we can't promote the album and doesn't exist yet said they're just experimenting with with some new packaging materials which again is a plant and then almost as an afterthought he and says oh that's the other thing is that the Boston gig has been canceled
- 50:28[SPEAKER_24]: What Ian is he and it's not a good man.
- 50:32[SPEAKER_03]: No, not at all.
- 50:32[SPEAKER_03]: And that's what's great too as well.
- 50:34[SPEAKER_03]: And you John, you alluded to it before, but supposedly the theme of the second of the second movie.
- 50:41[SPEAKER_03]: Deeply gets into that is the only thing that he actually died because he passed away Why and left his wife this it's one more contract that spinal tap has to play So force is then to come back together
- 51:00[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, that's great.
- 51:01[SPEAKER_24]: We're at a party, again, with Frank Drescher, with Bobby, and he goes to ask her about the cover.
- 51:08[SPEAKER_19]: Ian, you put a grease naked woman on all fours with a dual collar around her neck and a leash.
- 51:17[SPEAKER_19]: And a man's arm extended out up to here, holding onto the leash and pushing a black glove in her face to sniff it.
- 51:26[SPEAKER_19]: You don't find that offensive?
- 51:27[SPEAKER_24]: And the thing is, man, if you look at heavy metal album covers of the 70s and early 80s, or music videos of that era, there's a lot of stuff.
- 51:39[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, yeah.
- 51:39[SPEAKER_24]: And what I like, she plays it fully straight and fully angued, she is genuinely offended and angry about this thing.
- 51:47[SPEAKER_24]: I like what Ian says.
- 51:48[SPEAKER_23]: Well, you should have seen the cover they wanted to do.
- 51:52[SPEAKER_23]: Yes, but it's like, oh my god,
- 51:57[SPEAKER_24]: Well, I mean, and there are censored album covers, is the Beatles censored album cover, right?
- 52:02[SPEAKER_24]: Which I think is, it's them, like, as surgeons or something like that, and it was the one with John and Yoko.
- 52:07[SPEAKER_23]: Were they, they were naked on the cover?
- 52:08[SPEAKER_23]: They had to sell it with the brown wrapper, or whatever the number?
- 52:11[SPEAKER_23]: Yeah, I remember that.
- 52:12[SPEAKER_19]: And I don't think that especially cover is the answer for why an album sells it doesn't sell.
- 52:16[SPEAKER_19]: Because you tell me the white album, what was that?
- 52:19[SPEAKER_19]: There was nothing on that goddamn cover.
- 52:23[SPEAKER_24]: It's such a great plan because of course the thing is is like, yeah, because it's from the Beatles, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
- 52:46[SPEAKER_24]: And now we're arguing about the music, and by the way, in this whole conversation, we see that Nigel has a giant colesore on his lip, but David has a giant colesore.
- 52:55[SPEAKER_24]: My understanding is this there's a deleted scene where there's some groupie and the person playing the groupie actually did have a giant colsore and so then they thought it would be funny To have both Nigel and David have giant colsores implying that they both had sex with this groupie But then I guess they cut the groupie and then an executive again executive no offense Michael, but I don't look for myself an executive
- 53:19[SPEAKER_24]: Well, good, cause executives, you know, I mean, you know what they're like, those, those people, is that apparently executive Washington was like, oh, I didn't get it before.
- 53:27[SPEAKER_24]: So this is about the David and Nigel or Gay.
- 53:30[SPEAKER_03]: Oh my god.
- 53:31[SPEAKER_03]: Oh my god.
- 53:34[SPEAKER_24]: Yes, yes, yes, yes, exactly it's not going to get it funded and then we're just like okay We're going to figure out a compromise for the album.
- 53:44[SPEAKER_09]: It's going to be fine everybody's going to be fine Do you remember the first song that you guys have a world together all the way home probably
- 53:52[SPEAKER_09]: All the way home.
- 53:53[SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.
- 53:54[SPEAKER_09]: Can you remember a little bit of it?
- 53:56[SPEAKER_03]: I'd love to hear a cross.
- 53:58[SPEAKER_03]: This is the best moment in the movie.
- 54:00[SPEAKER_03]: I couldn't find it, but I guarantee it because of the way they improve this.
- 54:05[SPEAKER_03]: This is a 100% musical improv moment.
- 54:10[SPEAKER_03]: I have to be willing to that.
- 54:12[SPEAKER_03]: The only reason why I think that is because
- 54:14[SPEAKER_03]: He starts the song, right?
- 54:17[SPEAKER_03]: He's at the railroad track.
- 54:18[SPEAKER_03]: He gets thirsty, goes in.
- 54:20[SPEAKER_11]: And I'm waiting for that train to bring you back.
- 54:23[SPEAKER_11]: Which gives him a moment to think of.
- 54:26[SPEAKER_11]: If she's not on the 519, then I'm gonna know what sorrow means.
- 54:32[SPEAKER_10]: And I'm gonna cry cry cry all the way.
- 54:37[SPEAKER_00]: All the way home, all the way home, all the way home, all the way home.
- 54:42[SPEAKER_03]: I want a hundred percent happy to believe that if it wasn't a hundred percent improvs, that most of it was, and you could tell it the way they are going back and forth to each other, that is how they wrote all the music for us, too, because they probably, this is probably just like one of
- 54:57[SPEAKER_03]: 1000 sessions that they haven't each other to create music like this.
- 55:00[SPEAKER_03]: And then since then, you know, they've, you know, with their, they've done acoustic version.
- 55:05[SPEAKER_03]: If you go look at it, but think it's a 1992 Albert Hall.
- 55:08[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, they've done recordings of all these elongated the song, and it sounds like a beautiful, you know, acoustic version of one of the first songs they would have ever created.
- 55:18[SPEAKER_24]: It's such a perfect little R&B riff, you know what I mean?
- 55:21[SPEAKER_24]: And it's so
- 55:23[SPEAKER_24]: You know, being a huge fan of the Beatles and knowing what the Brits were listening to in terms of American music, it's exactly the first kind of song that they would write together.
- 55:32[SPEAKER_24]: You know, I totally agree.
- 55:35[SPEAKER_24]: It's a great, great moment.
- 55:37[SPEAKER_09]: Yeah.
- 55:38[SPEAKER_09]: One thing that puzzles me is the makeup of your audience seems to be predominantly young boys.
- 55:49[SPEAKER_24]: That response is, that's a sexual thing.
- 55:56[SPEAKER_24]: and that and it's also that women are fearful of them.
- 56:01[SPEAKER_11]: It was my theory.
- 56:02[SPEAKER_11]: They see us on stage with tight trousers.
- 56:05[SPEAKER_11]: We've got, you know, all materials and all trousers.
- 56:08[SPEAKER_11]: I mean, it's really quite frightening.
- 56:09[SPEAKER_11]: It's size.
- 56:14[SPEAKER_24]: It's so funny just the bits because the next one is a bit, and it is a perfect bit, and apparently it's referencing some Rolling Stones thing or something that they were unhappy with.
- 56:24[SPEAKER_24]: I'm not exactly what it is, but Nigel is unhappy because the bread is small.
- 56:30[SPEAKER_23]: Right, he can't wrap the bread around the meat.
- 56:35[SPEAKER_24]: And I love that he ends up to solve the problems like, no, he's saying to fold the meat and it'll fit on the small bread.
- 56:41[SPEAKER_24]: And I just like, I can't fold the bread.
- 56:42[SPEAKER_24]: It breaks.
- 56:44[SPEAKER_24]: And then it's just,
- 56:46[SPEAKER_24]: Look, just what you're going to have to watch it.
- 56:48[SPEAKER_03]: I can't really just really find it because again, it's just this like the ego of a character just complicated and then again the graciousness of the actor next to you to go along with your stupidity to find you know the ultimate goal of the joke.
- 57:06[SPEAKER_24]: And, you know, quick tip to all of you out there, you actually can't tell the star of the show that he's a moron.
- 57:12[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, we're just really the solution.
- 57:14[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, of course.
- 57:15[SPEAKER_24]: You can't say dude, what the fuck is wrong with you?
- 57:18[SPEAKER_24]: Just fold the meat and put it bread right here.
- 57:20[SPEAKER_24]: You can't do that.
- 57:23[SPEAKER_23]: Yeah, that's the genius of these moments because you're like, oh yeah, you have heard about stories about people like this because they're so out of touch, so rich and not that intelligent that they just,
- 57:33[SPEAKER_23]: They have all this time to kill before singing in the concert that they're just like, sit there and just all of a sudden these weird ideas coming in their head, born from all the drugs they've taken trying to figure this out.
- 57:46[SPEAKER_23]: Unbreakable bread is an essence what you do.
- 57:50[SPEAKER_24]: How do you gentlemen feel about the song?
- 57:52[SPEAKER_24]: Hellhole.
- 57:53[SPEAKER_24]: I think that's a positive reaction.
- 58:04[SPEAKER_24]: And Nigel in a rock star moment goes down on his back, continuing to play his guitar solo, and realizes he can't get up.
- 58:15[SPEAKER_24]: What would sells it for me in addition to the roadie, just desperately trying to lift him and it not working.
- 58:21[SPEAKER_24]: But the moment that he gets up, it's like a celebration, you know?
- 58:26[SPEAKER_24]: Like I've done it.
- 58:28[SPEAKER_24]: uh... were with Nigel and his guitar collection and his amps do you play all i mean you actually play all the hisor i played him and i a cherish and this is the i would this is the most famous the last line of the movie but the whole scene is funny as he's talking about each of these guitars and the when he picks up when he goes listen how much is this in a minute this is stine listen to it i'm not hearing anything
- 58:54[SPEAKER_11]: you would, though, if it were playing, but it really, it's famous for its sustainer.
- 58:58[SPEAKER_11]: I mean, you can just hold it.
- 59:00[SPEAKER_11]: Well, I mean, so you're like, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,
- 59:08[SPEAKER_24]: We hear about his guitar with a custom pickup that's got a radio unit, that's a plant that's going to come later.
- 59:14[SPEAKER_24]: And then the next guitar is, I'm just going to play the bit.
- 59:18[SPEAKER_11]: But it got in touch it.
- 59:19[SPEAKER_11]: I was going to touch it.
- 59:21[SPEAKER_11]: I wasn't going to touch it.
- 59:22[SPEAKER_07]: No.
- 59:22[SPEAKER_11]: I was just pointing at it.
- 59:23[SPEAKER_11]: Well, don't point.
- 59:25[SPEAKER_11]: Don't even point.
- 59:25[SPEAKER_11]: No.
- 59:26[SPEAKER_11]: It can't be played.
- 59:27[SPEAKER_11]: Never.
- 59:28[SPEAKER_11]: I mean, what can I look at?
- 59:29[SPEAKER_11]: No.
- 59:30[SPEAKER_11]: You've seen it.
- 59:30[SPEAKER_11]: Don't look at that one.
- 59:37[SPEAKER_03]: Steve, I can just listen to you do these clothes.
- 59:41[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 59:42[SPEAKER_24]: I don't know how's my accent, my how am I doing this?
- 59:44[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, I won't comment on that.
- 59:48[UNKNOWN]: Yeah.
- 59:49[SPEAKER_24]: Michael, I love you.
- 59:50[SPEAKER_24]: But for this review, I trust John far worse.
- 59:53[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, here's the thing.
- 59:54[SPEAKER_23]: I'm delivering the lines.
- 59:55[SPEAKER_23]: You're delivering the lines.
- 59:56[SPEAKER_24]: I'm not going to stop doing it.
- 59:57[SPEAKER_24]: So, you know.
- 59:59[SPEAKER_23]: Of course.
- 59:59[SPEAKER_24]: Look, I had tremendous trepidation about all the things I had to say when you did Django, and now I can just, like, you know, yeah, be free.
- 1:00:09[SPEAKER_24]: I put that's free in me up, it's free in me up.
- 1:00:12[SPEAKER_24]: Let's go look at the amps.
- 1:00:14[SPEAKER_24]: Gentlemen, the numbers all go to 11.
- 1:00:17[SPEAKER_09]: Does that mean it's louder?
- 1:00:18[SPEAKER_09]: Is that any louder?
- 1:00:19[SPEAKER_09]: Well, it's one louder.
- 1:00:21[SPEAKER_09]: Isn't it?
- 1:00:21[SPEAKER_11]: It's no 10.
- 1:00:23[SPEAKER_11]: Okay, my eyes just need 10.
- 1:00:24[SPEAKER_11]: Just turn it up a little bit louder.
- 1:00:26[SPEAKER_11]: What we do is if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know, we do put it up to 11.
- 1:00:32[SPEAKER_11]: Exactly.
- 1:00:33[SPEAKER_11]: One round.
- 1:00:34[SPEAKER_09]: Why don't you just make 10 louder and make 10 be the top number and make that a little louder.
- 1:00:39[SPEAKER_24]: And the pause.
- 1:00:40[SPEAKER_24]: The pause is the key.
- 1:00:42[SPEAKER_24]: The pause is the pause.
- 1:00:43[SPEAKER_24]: And then just the soft.
- 1:00:47[SPEAKER_23]: These cards are to 11.
- 1:00:56[SPEAKER_23]: uh, nails reality.
- 1:00:58[SPEAKER_23]: Why is it this?
- 1:01:00[SPEAKER_23]: And so, in a desperate, like, just, no, these go to 11, not six minute abs, seven minute abs.
- 1:01:06[SPEAKER_23]: And so it's just like, it's got to fit this thing.
- 1:01:09[SPEAKER_23]: Stop checking me.
- 1:01:11[SPEAKER_23]: Stop making sense.
- 1:01:12[SPEAKER_23]: I can't, uh, I can't go down there.
- 1:01:13[SPEAKER_23]: It's so great.
- 1:01:14[SPEAKER_03]: Marshall after this movie was made.
- 1:01:16[SPEAKER_03]: Marshall won it making two amps.
- 1:01:18[SPEAKER_03]: One that went from one to ten and another one that went from 11 to 20.
- 1:01:27[SPEAKER_24]: Oh, so what's funny is it also works perfectly because it's almost back to back with the fold the the Brad.
- 1:01:34[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, they're both people who can't are trying to help Nigel out.
- 1:01:40[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 1:01:40[SPEAKER_24]: And that it just isn't going to work.
- 1:01:43[SPEAKER_24]: Uh, we're at the hotel and there is Paul Benedict in ridiculous thick lenses, uh, best known of course from the Jefferson's, uh, and there's a slight problem.
- 1:01:52[SPEAKER_24]: They wanted seven suites mistakenly.
- 1:01:54[SPEAKER_24]: They only have one seat suite on the seven floor.
- 1:02:00[SPEAKER_14]: Easy mistake.
- 1:02:01[SPEAKER_14]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, what is a good size room, so it's like it's a king leisure.
- 1:02:05[SPEAKER_05]: We can get you, uh, so we got to get 14 people in a king leisure bed.
- 1:02:10[SPEAKER_24]: I think they do a perfect job of modulating the descent of the tour of making it right, yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:17[SPEAKER_24]: Perfectly worse and worse at every single stage.
- 1:02:21[SPEAKER_24]: And as Ian, I love the button on the scene as Ian is getting angry or an angrier and calls a Paul Benedict, a twisted old fruit.
- 1:02:30[SPEAKER_24]: And Paul Benedict says, I'm just as God made me so.
- 1:02:35[SPEAKER_23]: I love that.
- 1:02:36[SPEAKER_23]: I love that.
- 1:02:37[SPEAKER_23]: And he gives him the final line in that interaction so that, you know,
- 1:02:40[SPEAKER_23]: It's their small little way of saying like don't go after LGBTQ people man they're equal, but also he must love all because he uses them in government as well, so maybe he was a big like fucking Jefferson's fan, I don't know because he's they're specifically called him friend willard, oh yeah, and pressure out like those, they called them out numerous times in interviews, DVD.
- 1:03:08[SPEAKER_24]: Well, what would you say, what percentage of actors can do this?
- 1:03:13[SPEAKER_24]: That's kind of thing.
- 1:03:15[SPEAKER_24]: I'd be in an improv movie, create your own material.
- 1:03:18[SPEAKER_24]: Oh, you like this.
- 1:03:19[SPEAKER_24]: Right.
- 1:03:20[SPEAKER_24]: 10 percent?
- 1:03:21[SPEAKER_24]: 5 percent?
- 1:03:22[SPEAKER_03]: At most.
- 1:03:23[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, that's the thing.
- 1:03:24[SPEAKER_03]: It's like, even the office isn't really.
- 1:03:26[SPEAKER_03]: Like, that's, that's rising scripted.
- 1:03:28[SPEAKER_24]: It's, no, that's scripted.
- 1:03:30[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 1:03:30[SPEAKER_03]: I heard as well.
- 1:03:30[SPEAKER_03]: Feel that way.
- 1:03:31[SPEAKER_03]: So not a lot, man.
- 1:03:34[SPEAKER_03]: It's not, not a lot.
- 1:03:36[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 1:03:38[SPEAKER_24]: And we're in the lobby, by the way, I think this is a holiday and in Glendale that they're shooting this, and we're in the lobby and in comes walking through that lobby is the real current rock star Duke fame along with his manager Howard Hessman.
- 1:03:53[SPEAKER_24]: Yes, here's how Howard Hessman got into this.
- 1:03:59[SPEAKER_24]: they get this guy to play to fame and then they're shooting with him and realize that he can't in fact do the thing we're talking about.
- 1:04:05[SPEAKER_24]: He can't really improvise and like we need to get somebody out.
- 1:04:08[SPEAKER_24]: They love his look and then go let's is Howard around and so they fly Howard in and he literally he's got like two lines and he's perfect yeah yeah yeah and I love that the band is trying to talk to him and talk to Howard and Howard says listen we'd love to stand around and
- 1:04:32[SPEAKER_23]: and get some Ian's name or Liam's name wrong, right?
- 1:04:36[SPEAKER_23]: It calls him Ian or something like that.
- 1:04:38[SPEAKER_24]: It's his name wrong.
- 1:04:41[SPEAKER_24]: And then what we find out is that this big rock star used to open for tap and that they had to apologize for him.
- 1:04:48[SPEAKER_24]: Then the other thing is is that apparently his album has a Lord cover.
- 1:04:52[SPEAKER_24]: It's they could women and he's tied down to this table and it's got these webs in its semi nude.
- 1:04:57[SPEAKER_11]: Well, the point is much worse than a smellful glove.
- 1:05:00[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, the point is how many pounds are we going to die with that?
- 1:05:02[SPEAKER_05]: Because he's the victim.
- 1:05:03[SPEAKER_05]: Their objections were that she was the victim.
- 1:05:07[SPEAKER_05]: That's all right.
- 1:05:07[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, if the singer's the victim is different.
- 1:05:09[SPEAKER_24]: Oh, he did a twist on it.
- 1:05:15[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, and I love it's the moment of where you see that they think they get it and we know that no, they still really they don't get it and then this line This might be the line.
- 1:05:25[SPEAKER_24]: I know that it goes to 11 is the line of the movie But this line might very well be the line of the movie for me was it's such a fine line between stupid and clever That is going to be on my grip stone I promise you it's It's that's the line for me to stay
- 1:05:43[SPEAKER_24]: Well, and it's funny too, because I would say this is probably where you're in my appreciation of certain humorous things split off, because we're you draw the line between stupid and clever.
- 1:05:54[SPEAKER_24]: It's not where I draw the line on this for sure, because there's a whole bunch of stuff that you just adore and lots of people adore and I'm like, I don't, I just stupid.
- 1:06:06[SPEAKER_23]: Well, by the way, this dude guy is an actual heavy metal guy, Paul.
- 1:06:11[SPEAKER_06]: Oh, no.
- 1:06:11[SPEAKER_23]: Yeah, he was part of quiet riot for a while.
- 1:06:15[SPEAKER_23]: He's done a number of, yeah, he's been a part of a number of groups.
- 1:06:18[SPEAKER_23]: But one of his big claim to fame, the claim to fame, is that he wrote and performed the song Eggman for Dr. Eggman in Sonic Adventure 2 for Sega, which a lot of people know that song.
- 1:06:31[SPEAKER_23]: And so yeah, he did a, he was written a bunch of stuff and he still records still performs in all that kind of stuff and he even did it.
- 1:06:38[SPEAKER_23]: He even reprised the role in a, in a group called the big sin city centers.
- 1:06:43[SPEAKER_23]: So they would perform every once in a while around the Vegas and shit.
- 1:06:46[SPEAKER_23]: You know, yeah, legitimate rocker.
- 1:06:49[SPEAKER_23]: So I like that.
- 1:06:50[SPEAKER_23]: And like you said, Steve, they realize it's got to do this shit.
- 1:06:53[SPEAKER_23]: So using Hesman, who is so great at that kind of stuff to cover form is so good.
- 1:06:58[SPEAKER_05]: I have a small piece of bad news.
- 1:07:00[SPEAKER_05]: Well, that meant a third challenge.
- 1:07:02[SPEAKER_05]: We were canceled at the hotel.
- 1:07:05[SPEAKER_05]: No, we canceled the gig is canceled.
- 1:07:11[SPEAKER_03]: I think it was at this point.
- 1:07:13[SPEAKER_03]: I started really feeling bad.
- 1:07:14[SPEAKER_03]: Now I started feeling bad.
- 1:07:16[SPEAKER_03]: I started feeling uncomfortable now because this is also the turning point with like the start of feeling really, really bad and it was not going to turn back around.
- 1:07:24[SPEAKER_24]: Well, it's funny, all three of us, I know,
- 1:07:29[SPEAKER_24]: have been in terrible plays.
- 1:07:31[SPEAKER_24]: Yes, and had to go up and the thing about being in a terrible play that runs for two weeks, three weeks, four weeks, six weeks, is you still have to go, and you still have to, and you're backstage, you're like, all right, let's, let's put on a great show guys, because that's, and you know, and everyone knows it's bad, everyone knows it's not going
- 1:07:58[SPEAKER_09]: to America, they were booked into 10,000 Cedar Reignes and 15,000 Cedar venues, and it seems that now, on the current tour, they are being booked into 1200 Cedar Reignes, 1500 Cedar Reignes, and I was just wondering, does this mean the popularity of the group is waning?
- 1:08:18[SPEAKER_24]: First of all, Marty, that is a stupid question, because obviously, that's what it means.
- 1:08:24[SPEAKER_24]: And it's a horribly mean question, and the answer is, no, I just think there are peels becoming more selective.
- 1:08:34[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, that's true.
- 1:08:35[SPEAKER_24]: No, I think that's actually exactly right.
- 1:08:38[SPEAKER_24]: And then we ask them about the cricket bat.
- 1:08:40[SPEAKER_24]: Oh, man.
- 1:08:41[SPEAKER_24]: It's so good.
- 1:08:42[SPEAKER_05]: It's play.
- 1:08:43[SPEAKER_05]: No, I carry this partly out of sort of sort of, uh, uh, I suppose, uh, what's the word, uh, uh, affectation.
- 1:08:53[SPEAKER_24]: Have you known cricket bat style bosses who have, like, an affectation?
- 1:08:59[SPEAKER_24]: Oh, good.
- 1:09:01[SPEAKER_24]: I definitely have.
- 1:09:02[SPEAKER_24]: Good question.
- 1:09:03[SPEAKER_24]: Not just not, like, specifically a cricket bat, but, like, had a thing.
- 1:09:07[SPEAKER_24]: doesn't be in count because that was the, my, yeah, I haven't dealt with that.
- 1:09:12[SPEAKER_23]: Yeah, not a bad though.
- 1:09:14[SPEAKER_05]: To be quite frank with you, it's coming useful in a couple of situations.
- 1:09:17[SPEAKER_05]: Certainly, and they told you to be well, and we rock, and we did see him destroying things.
- 1:09:22[SPEAKER_24]: He destroyed the TV.
- 1:09:24[SPEAKER_24]: That must have been so satisfying, by the way.
- 1:09:26[SPEAKER_24]: I love to be able to like, you want me to hit this TV.
- 1:09:30[SPEAKER_24]: Okay.
- 1:09:31[SPEAKER_24]: Sounds great.
- 1:09:32[SPEAKER_03]: Hey, you got to do that with a meata in the desert.
- 1:09:34[SPEAKER_24]: I did do that with a meata.
- 1:09:36[SPEAKER_24]: So funny when I, so this is on this series, a web series, it's called Siren that Mike is in and John is in and my car had died and it was the car of the main character.
- 1:09:47[SPEAKER_24]: And so my accountant said that it would be a good tax deduction to just destroy it as part of the movie.
- 1:09:52[SPEAKER_24]: So we did and I got to hit the front windshield with the baseball bat.
- 1:09:59[SPEAKER_24]: swinging as hard as I fucking could.
- 1:10:02[SPEAKER_24]: And that safety glass, that shit works.
- 1:10:05[SPEAKER_24]: It's really hard to break a front windshield with a baseball bat.
- 1:10:09[SPEAKER_24]: But I broke the side windshield, the door wind, those broke really easy.
- 1:10:12[SPEAKER_24]: That was definitely satisfying.
- 1:10:14[SPEAKER_24]: And then we cut to David St. Hubbins on the phone with his girlfriend.
- 1:10:19[SPEAKER_24]: And then he hears that she is going to come
- 1:10:29[SPEAKER_24]: Well, my problems with a soul mate was that she needs, she's going to cut me this and the cut to Christopher Gast Yeah, he's reaction is so perfect.
- 1:10:39[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, but it's not until April as she comes in to drop some stuff off, you know No, no, she's coming on with it.
- 1:10:44[SPEAKER_11]: She's going to try.
- 1:10:45[SPEAKER_11]: Oh, that's she's going to go around with that She says she can hit her then I'm eating too much sugar on the phone.
- 1:10:50[SPEAKER_24]: She says my larynx is fat
- 1:10:54[SPEAKER_24]: And then they go to the next room because Derek calls it in because one of their old timesmen songs playing on the radio, they're all really excited.
- 1:11:04[SPEAKER_14]: And then we hear the announcer say,
- 1:11:24[SPEAKER_24]: Let's visit the grave of Elvis Presley in Graceland, shot in Altadena, California.
- 1:11:32[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, you were done.
- 1:11:33[SPEAKER_24]: Have you had a, like, I need to go visit this grave site, because, you know, of, oh, sure.
- 1:11:38[SPEAKER_23]: I went to when I was studying in London in 98.
- 1:11:41[SPEAKER_23]: I went, when we went to Paris for four days, I went to the Jim Morrison, yeah, grave site for sure.
- 1:11:48[SPEAKER_23]: Because I was in big doors, kick back then,
- 1:11:51[SPEAKER_23]: And the John Kennedy won living in DC is when I did for sure, but I've always wanted to go to Graceland.
- 1:11:58[SPEAKER_23]: I've never been.
- 1:11:59[SPEAKER_23]: Yeah.
- 1:11:59[SPEAKER_23]: I'd like to see his headstone as well.
- 1:12:03[SPEAKER_24]: So they've done this because they think this is going to be an important spiritual moment to visit the grave of the king and then they feel they should sing something and the reason by the way it's heartbreak hotel is that's the only song they can get the rights to.
- 1:12:15[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, and then they're trying to find the harmony.
- 1:12:23[SPEAKER_11]: Well, since my baby is the same key though, I think.
- 1:12:27[SPEAKER_10]: Well, since my baby is the same key though, I think.
- 1:12:30[SPEAKER_10]: Well, since my baby is the same key though, I think.
- 1:12:32[SPEAKER_10]: Well, since my baby is the same key though, I think.
- 1:12:34[SPEAKER_11]: Well, since my baby is the same key though, I think.
- 1:12:36[SPEAKER_11]: Well, since my baby is the same key though, I think.
- 1:12:37[SPEAKER_10]: Well, since my baby is the same key though, I think.
- 1:12:39[SPEAKER_10]: Well, since my baby is the same key though, I think.
- 1:12:40[SPEAKER_11]: Well, since my baby is the same key though, I think.
- 1:12:42[SPEAKER_11]: Well, since my baby is the same key though, I think.
- 1:12:43[SPEAKER_24]: Well, since my baby is the same key though, I think.
- 1:12:44[SPEAKER_24]: Well, since my baby is the same key though, I think.
- 1:12:46[SPEAKER_24]: Well, since my baby is the same key though, I think.
- 1:12:50[SPEAKER_11]: Well, since my baby is the same key though, I think.
- 1:12:52[SPEAKER_11]: But it really puts perspective on things, so it doesn't make it too much.
- 1:12:56[SPEAKER_11]: It's too much.
- 1:12:57[SPEAKER_11]: It's too much.
- 1:12:57[SPEAKER_11]: It's too much.
- 1:12:58[SPEAKER_24]: It's too much.
- 1:13:01[SPEAKER_24]: It's too much fucking perspective.
- 1:13:02[SPEAKER_24]: It's also one of them.
- 1:13:05[SPEAKER_24]: We start talking about 67 when Spinal Tap finally came into existence.
- 1:13:10[SPEAKER_24]: And we go to the song, Listen to the Flower People.
- 1:13:23[SPEAKER_24]: This is my favorite of their flashback performances, and in particular, it's the shhh from TerriX models.
- 1:13:39[SPEAKER_23]: Yeah, this is where it kind of veers into the Ruttles territory a little bit.
- 1:13:44[SPEAKER_23]: Yeah, yeah, a little bit.
- 1:13:45[SPEAKER_23]: But I prefer this.
- 1:13:46[SPEAKER_23]: I think the Ruttles is okay.
- 1:13:48[SPEAKER_23]: I've seen that one like two or three times,
- 1:13:51[SPEAKER_23]: I think the Schumer here is works better.
- 1:13:53[SPEAKER_23]: And maybe because I didn't grow up in Britain because there's a lot of British Schumer, you would probably get in that in the run.
- 1:14:00[SPEAKER_23]: It was like this one just.
- 1:14:01[SPEAKER_23]: nails it and then doing this and of course once again like parodying the Beatles a little bit how they changed from like doing their skiffle band stuff into these like, you know, influenced by psychedelic drugs and the Maharaja or whatever it was doing all of that in the studying they did and the music they came out with and so I those hilarious man and almost and a little bit almost like Sinatra if guys remember Sinatra when he tried to
- 1:14:25[SPEAKER_23]: Where the neighborhood jackets there in the late 60's going find those and the early 70's going find those videos is real uncomfortable dog is real
- 1:14:34[SPEAKER_23]: seeing him sing with the fifth dimension, wearing Nehru jackets.
- 1:14:39[SPEAKER_23]: And I mean, bright color Nehru jackets.
- 1:14:41[SPEAKER_23]: He was like, still trying to stay relevant.
- 1:14:44[SPEAKER_24]: So you got to stay in your lane.
- 1:14:46[SPEAKER_24]: No, who's going to go?
- 1:14:47[SPEAKER_23]: Basically.
- 1:14:47[SPEAKER_24]: And then we hear about the next drummer, who also died and his serious circumstances, he spontaneously compusted.
- 1:14:57[SPEAKER_03]: And that was soon they probably have like, again, made up 36 different ways.
- 1:15:01[SPEAKER_03]: I sure they were.
- 1:15:02[SPEAKER_03]: Contaneous combustion was just like, like, we're like, you, you have, that is the most ridiculous thing in the world.
- 1:15:09[SPEAKER_03]: There's like, all the other ones were so familiar, there was like, no, I just want to take a bus.
- 1:15:12[SPEAKER_03]: You know, it's just like, they earned our trust so much.
- 1:15:15[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 1:15:16[SPEAKER_03]: It can just be like, yes, spontaneous combustion fine, right?
- 1:15:18[SPEAKER_03]: Good, yeah.
- 1:15:19[SPEAKER_24]: Uh, we're at a mic check in Milwaukee and they're playing a little bit of
- 1:15:36[SPEAKER_24]: And in comes David's girlfriend, Janine Pettibone played by June Shadwick.
- 1:15:44[SPEAKER_24]: Apparently they did like one line of improv with her and knew that she was the white person for the first time.
- 1:15:50[SPEAKER_24]: And and she's great.
- 1:15:52[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 1:15:53[SPEAKER_24]: She is just perfectly in that zone.
- 1:15:57[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 1:15:59[SPEAKER_24]: David is super happy and runs in the audience and Nigel stands.
- 1:16:04[SPEAKER_24]: They're watching.
- 1:16:04[SPEAKER_24]: It's later on and Ian is going to it's the moment they've been waiting for because Ian has their album.
- 1:16:12[SPEAKER_24]: They open it up and it's the black album.
- 1:16:19[SPEAKER_24]: It listening to the process.
- 1:16:22[SPEAKER_24]: Oh man.
- 1:16:23[SPEAKER_24]: I love Derek.
- 1:16:24[SPEAKER_24]: He's trying to make the best of he's saying, oh, you can see yourself in it.
- 1:16:27[SPEAKER_24]: Both sides.
- 1:16:30[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah.
- 1:16:30[SPEAKER_11]: There's so black.
- 1:16:32[SPEAKER_11]: It's like how much more black could display, you know, so it's none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none, none
- 1:16:48[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, it doesn't say spinal tap on it.
- 1:16:51[SPEAKER_24]: They're not the Beatles.
- 1:16:54[SPEAKER_24]: This is not going to work.
- 1:16:56[SPEAKER_23]: That inspired the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the
- 1:17:21[SPEAKER_23]: because that's when they were breaking up, right?
- 1:17:23[SPEAKER_23]: So it's those songs that are all saying solo.
- 1:17:25[SPEAKER_23]: And then Prince had a black album in 1987 when he was fighting with the studio, I mean, the record company about what did so he just released an album of stuff and put it on a black album with nothing on the cover not himself or anything and just put it out there because he had to put
- 1:17:40[SPEAKER_23]: an album out there contractually.
- 1:17:42[SPEAKER_23]: So there have been a number of black ACDC had one version of it as well.
- 1:17:46[SPEAKER_23]: So there have been a number of them.
- 1:17:47[SPEAKER_23]: And even Jay Z had one called the black album that came out in the 90, 90s or in the early 2000s as well.
- 1:17:55[SPEAKER_23]: So the black album has become legend off of what happened here in this moment.
- 1:18:02[SPEAKER_23]: You actually
- 1:18:07[SPEAKER_24]: It's cinephiles after dark man.
- 1:18:10[SPEAKER_23]: It would video of us in the dark recording.
- 1:18:15[SPEAKER_24]: You know what we do?
- 1:18:16[SPEAKER_24]: It's like every once in a while just like light a match and like move your face into frames.
- 1:18:20[SPEAKER_24]: You see it a little bit and that's it.
- 1:18:21[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 1:18:23[SPEAKER_24]: This is good stuff.
- 1:18:24[SPEAKER_24]: That's our next live show too, mate.
- 1:18:25[SPEAKER_06]: I've done.
- 1:18:27[SPEAKER_24]: We're in concert.
- 1:18:28[SPEAKER_24]: It's rock and roll creation.
- 1:18:31[SPEAKER_24]: We're in these cocoons.
- 1:18:33[SPEAKER_03]: Well, dear God.
- 1:18:34[SPEAKER_24]: And it just, first of all, again, all the songs are good, like, and Derek gets trapped in the cocoon, and because, and again, because you guys have been on stage, I've been on stage when things go wrong, and it's like, you're still trying to do the show.
- 1:18:48[SPEAKER_24]: Derek is doing the show, you know, trapped in the cocoon, and they're hammering on this thing, and they're pulling on the thing, trying to, by the way,
- 1:18:57[SPEAKER_24]: the way this is operated is very high tech is there is a dude underneath the platform holding the cocoon shot with his hands.
- 1:19:05[SPEAKER_24]: Right.
- 1:19:05[SPEAKER_24]: So when someone is trying to force it open, that guy is fighting with the guy underneath the stage, trying to hold a shot.
- 1:19:12[SPEAKER_24]: That is how high tech this is.
- 1:19:13[SPEAKER_24]: The moment they bring out the blow torch.
- 1:19:19[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, this was the, this was the,
- 1:19:25[SPEAKER_03]: just ridiculous over the top like physical like just stupid airplane asked physical comedy of this booming.
- 1:19:36[SPEAKER_24]: And then he finally gets out just as they have to go back in.
- 1:19:44[SPEAKER_24]: And then gets his arm cut.
- 1:19:47[SPEAKER_24]: We have an interview with the drummer in
- 1:19:54[SPEAKER_23]: This is who is just fucking genius man.
- 1:19:59[SPEAKER_23]: He's so relaxed sitting back with the shower cap on his head first of all.
- 1:20:02[SPEAKER_23]: Nothing more metal than a shower cap on your head.
- 1:20:05[SPEAKER_23]: And then he, he reasons logically that
- 1:20:16[SPEAKER_01]: you will survive.
- 1:20:17[SPEAKER_23]: Yeah.
- 1:20:18[SPEAKER_23]: I'm actually making a smart career decision that'll extend my life.
- 1:20:22[SPEAKER_23]: I actually won't die, which is hilarious to me.
- 1:20:26[SPEAKER_24]: It seems perfectly logical.
- 1:20:27[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, sure it does.
- 1:20:29[SPEAKER_24]: Ron, the tour bus.
- 1:20:31[SPEAKER_24]: And now we see the separation because Janine is there and she is hanging out with David.
- 1:20:36[SPEAKER_24]: She's made him a lovely sort of sweatshirt thing.
- 1:20:40[SPEAKER_23]: And the guys are in the back and I love just that David wants to go back to play with them and he doesn't really want to wear this sweatshirt in front of them and there's just so much good stuff to David knows David knows he wouldn't admit it and he talks so much a much he loves genie, but he knows he knows her things are creative to say isn't as good as his so, you know, well, maybe on the same par I guess maybe, but he knows.
- 1:21:07[SPEAKER_24]: Absolutely.
- 1:21:09[SPEAKER_24]: And he also, I think, does feel he needs Ginny on some brighter level, like it.
- 1:21:14[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 1:21:14[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 1:21:15[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, you have a few friends like this.
- 1:21:17[SPEAKER_09]: Let me name two of them right now.
- 1:21:25[SPEAKER_09]: I wonder if you have as much influence over his musical expression.
- 1:21:29[SPEAKER_20]: Oh yeah, I mean, I listen to him and he's experimenting with things like that.
- 1:21:31[SPEAKER_20]: When I say, yeah, that's good, that's bad, that's good, that's bad, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that's good, that
- 1:21:45[SPEAKER_23]: And it's all a play on John and Yoko because they went to screen therapy together, they went through all that.
- 1:21:49[SPEAKER_23]: And the shot of them both going like, ah, with their tongues out and shit was cheap.
- 1:21:57[SPEAKER_11]: And this one in particular is the camera is mostly on Jeanine when you hear David say, and of course it's, you know, it's so strange because Nigel and Jeanine are so similar in so many ways, but they just can't.
- 1:22:12[SPEAKER_11]: They don't dislike each other.
- 1:22:14[SPEAKER_24]: It's all that is great love between the two of them, but they're just They're watching her eyes and then the little side I look that she gives as he's talking about her relationship with Nigel He's perfect.
- 1:22:25[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah
- 1:22:27[SPEAKER_24]: And again, I'm not gonna name the names that you mentioned, Mike, but we have certainly been in the room where one couple member is talking about the other and watched the other person's face.
- 1:22:40[SPEAKER_24]: Again, not naming the names.
- 1:22:42[SPEAKER_24]: Except it was.
- 1:22:56[SPEAKER_23]: It's a heartbreaking, you fucking insane man.
- 1:23:03[SPEAKER_03]: The self's key ever created.
- 1:23:05[SPEAKER_23]: He might be minor.
- 1:23:06[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 1:23:07[SPEAKER_03]: My wife, who's deep into music, it's a mix between Mozart and Bach.
- 1:23:14[SPEAKER_03]: She's like, you can be more opposite.
- 1:23:17[SPEAKER_03]: You can be more opposite.
- 1:23:19[SPEAKER_03]: That's the humor.
- 1:23:22[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 1:23:23[SPEAKER_06]: It's sort of a mock.
- 1:23:27[SPEAKER_24]: And then again, so, so one of the many skills I completely lack as a writer is writing a good button.
- 1:23:34[SPEAKER_24]: A good button.
- 1:23:34[SPEAKER_24]: That is not I cannot write like I can write something funny, but I cannot write.
- 1:23:39[SPEAKER_24]: Come up with the joke at the end of the scene.
- 1:23:41[SPEAKER_24]: The joke at the end of the scene is so good.
- 1:23:43[SPEAKER_24]: After all this talk about the beautiful sad music and Mozart and Bach and listening to this music, he says, what do you call this?
- 1:23:50[SPEAKER_11]: Well, this pace is called a lick my laugh pump.
- 1:23:54[SPEAKER_24]: And again, Rob Riner's reaction shot of just sort of nodding.
- 1:23:59[SPEAKER_03]: Again, supposedly on set, this is the line that Rob Riner was like, I lost my, I lost my shit.
- 1:24:04[SPEAKER_03]: I literally lost my shit.
- 1:24:06[SPEAKER_03]: And Christopher Gaston, of course, saying like, it's the perfect setup.
- 1:24:09[SPEAKER_03]: They know what they're doing for each other.
- 1:24:11[SPEAKER_03]: That's what they're doing.
- 1:24:13[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 1:24:13[SPEAKER_24]: No, what they're doing is we have a long bit that I don't need to go into the details of, but there are small beeps going through security.
- 1:24:25[SPEAKER_24]: This is this a fine line between stupid and clever.
- 1:24:28[SPEAKER_24]: Yes, it is.
- 1:24:30[SPEAKER_24]: And it ends up when we finally get to it.
- 1:24:32[SPEAKER_24]: It is the large foil wrapped cucumber in his pants that is setting off the alarms.
- 1:24:38[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 1:24:39[SPEAKER_24]: We're in concert again.
- 1:24:40[SPEAKER_24]: The song is heavy duty.
- 1:24:41[SPEAKER_24]: This was the first song written for the movie.
- 1:24:44[SPEAKER_24]: Oh.
- 1:24:44[SPEAKER_24]: And it's so funny because after we've heard about women being afraid of their, I forget what they called it, it's in their pants, and then seeing Derek Smalls wears one regularly, there are a lot of upcroch angles filming them and this scene.
- 1:25:03[SPEAKER_24]: And I love because, of course, we've heard of Nigel's love for classical music that in the middle of it in the guitar solo, we go into and I had to look it up.
- 1:25:11[SPEAKER_24]: But it's Baccarini's string quartet in E major, Opus 11.
- 1:25:15[SPEAKER_24]: Number 6.
- 1:25:27[SPEAKER_24]: We're at a holiday in Let's Meet, Arty Fuffkin, Paul Shaper, all man.
- 1:25:33[SPEAKER_15]: Best.
- 1:25:34[SPEAKER_15]: Oh, what's going on here?
- 1:25:35[SPEAKER_15]: Hi.
- 1:25:35[SPEAKER_15]: Hi, guys.
- 1:25:36[SPEAKER_15]: I already puffed in.
- 1:25:37[SPEAKER_15]: Polymer Records.
- 1:25:38[SPEAKER_15]: Nice to see you.
- 1:25:39[SPEAKER_23]: There's a world where Paul Scherfer became an incredible sitcom actor.
- 1:25:44[SPEAKER_23]: Yeah.
- 1:25:44[SPEAKER_23]: Totally.
- 1:25:45[SPEAKER_23]: We never got to see that world.
- 1:25:47[SPEAKER_23]: Just like I'll never see the world where
- 1:25:49[SPEAKER_23]: Michael Ross becomes a great late night host.
- 1:25:52[SPEAKER_23]: It'll never I've pushed him for decades and well, wait, wait, you see what I'm plugging at the end.
- 1:25:58[SPEAKER_23]: Okay.
- 1:25:58[SPEAKER_23]: Good.
- 1:25:58[SPEAKER_23]: Great.
- 1:25:58[SPEAKER_03]: So my love.
- 1:26:00[SPEAKER_23]: Fantastic.
- 1:26:00[SPEAKER_23]: Good.
- 1:26:01[SPEAKER_23]: But but he is so good here.
- 1:26:04[SPEAKER_23]: Whatever I've seen him pop up in roles, even in hercules that little role as Mercury.
- 1:26:09[SPEAKER_23]: He is hilarious.
- 1:26:11[SPEAKER_23]: And yes, he's a great musical genius and we're led the band and all that kind of stuff, but we missed out on an incredible, funny acting career with Paul Shafer as a music come actor man.
- 1:26:23[SPEAKER_24]: He so understands what is required in the heart.
- 1:26:27[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, and he's doing it like this sort of
- 1:26:31[SPEAKER_24]: I don't know quite how describe his character, but the ineffectual, enthusiastic, friendly, insecure.
- 1:26:40[SPEAKER_24]: There's just all this stuff that Jax feels 100% real, and he's the guy who's in charge of their publicity for their big autograph session where we go to the record store, and it's totally empty.
- 1:26:50[SPEAKER_24]: And first, he's like scolding the owner of the record store, like, how could you do this to me?
- 1:26:55[SPEAKER_24]: And then he wants to take full responsibility for it.
- 1:26:59[SPEAKER_16]: Do me a favor.
- 1:27:00[SPEAKER_16]: Just kick my ass, okay?
- 1:27:03[SPEAKER_16]: Kick this ass for a man.
- 1:27:04[SPEAKER_16]: That's all.
- 1:27:05[SPEAKER_16]: Kick my ass.
- 1:27:06[SPEAKER_16]: Enjoy.
- 1:27:06[SPEAKER_16]: Come on.
- 1:27:07[SPEAKER_16]: I'm not asking.
- 1:27:08[SPEAKER_16]: I'm telling with this.
- 1:27:09[SPEAKER_16]: Kick my ass.
- 1:27:12[SPEAKER_24]: Apparently, this is based on some real story that one of them had, where someone was asking them to kick their ass for real.
- 1:27:19[SPEAKER_24]: This next sequence is among my favorite in the movie, which is where backstage at the concert and it's time to go on stage and they go down the hall and to the right and around the corner and up the stairs and June, and so when I was younger, do you know where this took place?
- 1:27:33[SPEAKER_03]: No, no, it's because they're in Cleveland.
- 1:27:37[SPEAKER_03]: Ah, oh, where I am from.
- 1:27:39[SPEAKER_03]: So I was so excited.
- 1:27:40[SPEAKER_03]: I'm like, where is it going to be?
- 1:27:42[SPEAKER_03]: Is it going to be a blossom?
- 1:27:43[SPEAKER_03]: Is it going to be like, what music venue are they going to show?
- 1:27:46[SPEAKER_03]: Because I didn't know that.
- 1:27:47[SPEAKER_03]: Of course, it all filmed in Los Angeles.
- 1:27:49[SPEAKER_03]: And then they fucking do not goddamn make it on.
- 1:27:55[SPEAKER_24]: It's so funny.
- 1:27:55[SPEAKER_24]: And again, for those of you who have not been backstage at a big theater, this is totally possible.
- 1:28:00[SPEAKER_24]: There are all these tunnels and hallways and stairways and underneath the stage and a rat.
- 1:28:06[SPEAKER_24]: I mean, like, there are total mazes.
- 1:28:08[SPEAKER_24]: Apparently, this is inspired.
- 1:28:09[SPEAKER_24]: There's some video, and I tried to find it, but apparently, they had seen some video of Tom Petty at a concert in Germany, where he's being filmed wandering around trying to find the stage and ends up opening the door
- 1:28:31[SPEAKER_24]: Well, and I love what they like they find the guy who gives them the directions.
- 1:28:37[SPEAKER_24]: It is as he's giving the directions, I can't even follow what he's telling them to do.
- 1:28:40[SPEAKER_24]: There's no way they can follow it.
- 1:28:42[SPEAKER_24]: And I love they just walk around a very short circle and come right back to him.
- 1:28:45[SPEAKER_24]: I'm like, can't you please just walk them to the stage?
- 1:28:50[SPEAKER_24]: And the other thing that's great about this whole sequence is them trying to keep pumped up.
- 1:28:57[SPEAKER_06]: Okay, let's get it!
- 1:29:00[SPEAKER_06]: What could we do?
- 1:29:00[SPEAKER_06]: Rockerall?
- 1:29:02[SPEAKER_23]: This used to be a nightmare of mine when I was an actor.
- 1:29:05[SPEAKER_23]: Oh, sure.
- 1:29:06[SPEAKER_23]: The idea of not being able to find the stage before you're supposed to come on stage.
- 1:29:11[SPEAKER_23]: Oh my god, that used to be a nightmare for years.
- 1:29:14[SPEAKER_23]: And I hadn't, you know, rewatching it now.
- 1:29:16[SPEAKER_23]: I'm like, did it come for me, watching this in the night?
- 1:29:19[SPEAKER_23]: Yeah, I don't know if there's been such an insanely aggravating scene.
- 1:29:22[SPEAKER_23]: And your rights to the point that out the fact they had to keep hype in themselves up, but just to be deflated again, I've been just to be deflated again, because it can't find the way it's done.
- 1:29:30[SPEAKER_24]: And the thing is, I bet they went on stage and did their show.
- 1:29:34[SPEAKER_24]: I bet they were, you know, because, you know, because you know what the thing about spinal tap is?
- 1:29:38[SPEAKER_24]: They're a good rock band.
- 1:29:40[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, it's like they're good.
- 1:29:41[SPEAKER_24]: They put on a show and it's like they're weird things about it.
- 1:29:45[SPEAKER_24]: But no, they are professional rockies and the other thing about them and we'll get to this at the end, but they love playing together.
- 1:29:52[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, the conflicts that happen backstage when they're on stage, that doesn't exist, you know, we're again, we're talking about the album and as we're talking about, you know, the black cover,
- 1:30:07[SPEAKER_21]: It might have been better if the album had been mixed right.
- 1:30:12[SPEAKER_24]: It's like, oh, there is the looks.
- 1:30:15[SPEAKER_24]: And this again, as you said, John, it's all the Yoko stuff.
- 1:30:17[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.
- 1:30:18[SPEAKER_20]: You don't do every metal in toffee, you know?
- 1:30:20[SPEAKER_20]: And what?
- 1:30:23[SPEAKER_24]: they realized that she meant Dolby and laughing her.
- 1:30:27[SPEAKER_24]: And then as they're laughing her about this, she has something to show them.
- 1:30:31[SPEAKER_11]: These are, I knew, I did, I knew the stage of the band.
- 1:30:37[SPEAKER_24]: Of all the scenes where I, as a grown-up, watching it and having been in meetings and the conversation, this is the one that really hit home.
- 1:30:46[SPEAKER_24]: She's brought out all of these drawings of them, all in animal makeup, all based on their astrological signs, Mike Ross, I know that you've been in this meeting.
- 1:30:57[SPEAKER_03]: I may have, I may have been the one showing the asked for help.
- 1:31:07[SPEAKER_03]: Point.
- 1:31:09[SPEAKER_03]: You know what actually, again, it's just like the
- 1:31:17[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, God.
- 1:31:19[SPEAKER_24]: Yep.
- 1:31:20[SPEAKER_24]: You know, it's what one is Mike, where you and I were in it together, because we went to Burning Man together.
- 1:31:24[SPEAKER_24]: And we would have meetings about what our camp was going to do.
- 1:31:31[SPEAKER_24]: Like, and when, like, brought up It was totally ridiculous.
- 1:31:37[SPEAKER_24]: And I remember making eye contact with you and going like, because you can't say to your friend,
- 1:31:44[SPEAKER_24]: That is the stupidest fucking idea I ever heard.
- 1:31:46[SPEAKER_24]: You just have to, hmm, oh, intro, no, that could be a really...
- 1:31:50[SPEAKER_03]: I'm talking about that.
- 1:31:51[SPEAKER_03]: Absolutely, let's waste some time.
- 1:31:53[SPEAKER_03]: Let's go and talk about that.
- 1:31:55[SPEAKER_03]: Let's get you sick.
- 1:31:56[SPEAKER_24]: Well, I'd like sure we don't have enough money to do any of these things, and we're not actually going to make it to, like the play's not going to happen, or the show is not going to happen, but sure, let's waste time talking about that.
- 1:32:07[SPEAKER_24]: I'm going to, that's another one.
- 1:32:08[SPEAKER_24]: I'm just going to keep that.
- 1:32:10[SPEAKER_24]: It's not in the movie that says what this fuck has.
- 1:32:13[SPEAKER_23]: That's why I don't collaborate with more than two or three people, man.
- 1:32:16[SPEAKER_23]: Because it just becomes too long.
- 1:32:19[SPEAKER_24]: And I love the mode.
- 1:32:20[SPEAKER_11]: I like this.
- 1:32:23[SPEAKER_11]: This is just me with this for one moment.
- 1:32:27[SPEAKER_24]: And by the way, just as we said, like Rob Reiner is an unsung hero.
- 1:32:32[SPEAKER_24]: Harry Schirer.
- 1:32:34[SPEAKER_24]: has to be sit in this pocket of you can see him reacting to things and he wants to keep the band together, you know, and he wants everything to be okay.
- 1:32:43[SPEAKER_24]: So he's never going to be too much of a jerk, even though you can see him having all these thoughts.
- 1:32:48[SPEAKER_24]: Great.
- 1:32:48[SPEAKER_13]: And I think that there are solutions to our problems.
- 1:32:50[SPEAKER_13]: I think we know.
- 1:32:51[SPEAKER_11]: I get to hear that.
- 1:32:52[SPEAKER_11]: I get to hear that.
- 1:32:53[SPEAKER_13]: It will be another one of the reasons why we're trying to approach and say.
- 1:32:58[SPEAKER_24]: And then they interrupt Derek and we never get to hear what he knew the issue of the problem was.
- 1:33:03[SPEAKER_24]: So my question is, did he have something to say like did he actually have a solution to any of these problems?
- 1:33:10[SPEAKER_23]: Oh yeah, I think because of course Derek is supposed to be kind of like the George Harrison or Ringo star of the situation.
- 1:33:15[SPEAKER_23]: So yeah, I think he does and I think he did, but like that's why Harry plays it so well is that he leaves it hanging in the air.
- 1:33:23[SPEAKER_23]: He understands the dynamic.
- 1:33:25[SPEAKER_23]: with these two guys.
- 1:33:26[SPEAKER_23]: So to play the guy who could have maybe solved these kinds of things adds even more to the tragedy of it all, which is genius.
- 1:33:34[SPEAKER_23]: That's genius understanding of comedy.
- 1:33:36[SPEAKER_23]: So just leave it hanging in the air there and we never hear about it.
- 1:33:39[SPEAKER_23]: So we're left to wonder if maybe.
- 1:33:41[SPEAKER_23]: All of this could have been avoided that they let him speak up, or if you had wanted to speak up, but, you know, he plays a character that has never found the room to speak up because it doesn't want to upset the apple car and all the times before this, where it probably could have helped solve all their problems too.
- 1:33:56[SPEAKER_23]: Yeah, yeah, like what do the Eagles documentary Joe Walsh is an essence that that that role in that band once he joins it because you watch that Eagles doc and you see the battles that they have with the some of the original members, but then with when Glenn Fry and and done, he only would go at it and you see Joe having to kind of navigate this because he's not necessarily a confrontational person so it's just always so interesting and you need that kind of energy in the band.
- 1:34:24[SPEAKER_24]: I mean, it's so funny watching, get back.
- 1:34:27[SPEAKER_24]: I just go, man, Ringo is, Ringo's the best.
- 1:34:32[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 1:34:33[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 1:34:34[SPEAKER_24]: Like, he's just there doing the job.
- 1:34:37[SPEAKER_24]: Like, I'm here to play, and then I'm, oh, I'd show up.
- 1:34:40[SPEAKER_24]: I do the job.
- 1:34:41[SPEAKER_24]: Oh, it's the best.
- 1:34:42[SPEAKER_23]: And that's why when he wanted to quit, the Beatles, like, well, we really need to figure this out then.
- 1:34:46[SPEAKER_23]: If he wants to leave, we know we've gone through a problem.
- 1:34:49[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, but but we don't have to worry because Nigel has the solution and the solution he draws on a napkin is Stonehenge and next to it he writes 18 and the inches sign
- 1:35:03[SPEAKER_24]: Do you think, and maybe it's impossible to remember, but do you think you noticed that when you first saw the movie?
- 1:35:08[SPEAKER_24]: No.
- 1:35:09[SPEAKER_24]: No way, I didn't notice it at all.
- 1:35:12[SPEAKER_24]: Because it's, that is, it's also too wide.
- 1:35:16[SPEAKER_03]: Again, when it comes back, you're like, because nobody did, like, except the last guy and actually had to build it, right?
- 1:35:22[SPEAKER_24]: Right.
- 1:35:23[SPEAKER_09]: In thick, do you feel that in collaboration with David that you are afforded the opportunity to express yourself musically the way you would like to?
- 1:35:33[SPEAKER_11]: When I think I do, you know, in my cellars, in my cellars, in my trademark.
- 1:35:37[SPEAKER_24]: And we cut to him, shirtless, play first just a ridiculously self-indulgent solo, with the few distinct face in the hole like getting super into it, and then,
- 1:35:51[SPEAKER_24]: playing a guitar below him with his foot, and that alone would be enough.
- 1:35:56[SPEAKER_24]: Do you know what I mean?
- 1:35:57[SPEAKER_24]: Like you would feel that he had delivered on the comedic moment.
- 1:36:00[SPEAKER_24]: But no, he picks up a violin and uses the violin like a bow to play his electric guitar.
- 1:36:08[SPEAKER_24]: And then you would go, I'm satisfied.
- 1:36:11[SPEAKER_24]: I feel like we've delivered on all the comedic profits of this moment.
- 1:36:17[SPEAKER_24]: But no, because then he tunes the violin.
- 1:36:23[SPEAKER_24]: That was a little absurd.
- 1:36:25[SPEAKER_03]: See, now you guys understand what it's like to go to a fish concert.
- 1:36:32[SPEAKER_24]: I don't know if I was quite high enough, watching this to fully understand what I'd like to go to a fish concert, but it's fair, fair point.
- 1:36:42[SPEAKER_24]: And now we're with Stonehenge, and Ian is thrilled looking at what he thinks is a model.
- 1:36:48[SPEAKER_05]: Expect a real thing.
- 1:36:49[SPEAKER_05]: Got it.
- 1:36:50[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 1:36:51[SPEAKER_05]: When we get the actual set, when we get the piece, it'll follow exactly these specifications.
- 1:36:55[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, even these contours and everything.
- 1:36:57[SPEAKER_24]: and Angelica Houston, yeah, of all people.
- 1:37:01[SPEAKER_24]: Of all people sitting there looking very uncomfortable.
- 1:37:05[SPEAKER_12]: This is what I was asked to do.
- 1:37:06[SPEAKER_12]: 18 inches, right here, it's specified.
- 1:37:09[SPEAKER_12]: 18 inches.
- 1:37:10[SPEAKER_12]: I was given this napkin, I mean, forget this.
- 1:37:13[SPEAKER_05]: Fuck the napkin!
- 1:37:15[SPEAKER_24]: You know, it just occurred to me.
- 1:37:16[SPEAKER_24]: So one of the things I would always put on the board when I was teaching directing, and people would always laugh, but I would always put on the board, don't trust anybody, which is the idea of, and they go, what do you mean?
- 1:37:27[SPEAKER_24]: But it's like, no, you have to verify everything.
- 1:37:31[SPEAKER_24]: You can't just say,
- 1:37:32[SPEAKER_24]: This character is in a beautiful blue dress because what do you mean by a beautiful blue dress you can't just say Show up at this time at this moment or whatever you have to check in and make sure that the thing that you want to be ready at that time At that moment is ready.
- 1:37:44[SPEAKER_24]: You have to you could trust but verify in all of filming You always have to check in and make sure you're on the same page This is a classic blender.
- 1:37:54[SPEAKER_24]: You know And what's crazy to me?
- 1:37:57[SPEAKER_24]: What's great?
- 1:37:57[SPEAKER_24]: And this is this is really where you have to accept the ridiculous of where the movie is
- 1:38:01[SPEAKER_24]: There's no way Ian would go forward with this at this point.
- 1:38:05[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, right, of course.
- 1:38:06[SPEAKER_24]: Like you talked to the band or you'd have her make the actual big one.
- 1:38:09[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, but I'm sorry.
- 1:38:12[SPEAKER_03]: Again, when your billboard out front says puppets.com and spinal tap, I think they're kind of young point at him.
- 1:38:19[SPEAKER_03]: You look fix any of this at this point.
- 1:38:23[SPEAKER_24]: Well, technically we're not there yet, because a few concerts down the line, but yes, I don't get it.
- 1:38:28[SPEAKER_24]: Well, and what's in the budget after eight canceled shows and no problem sales, you know.
- 1:38:34[SPEAKER_24]: But we're on stage, it's very intense, it's very dramatic, there's smoke, fog everywhere.
- 1:38:40[SPEAKER_24]: And we hear this, by the way, the fascination with medieval, druid stuff, connection to heavy metal, it's always sort of been kind of fascinating to me.
- 1:38:53[SPEAKER_24]: Like, I don't know where that comes from, but they're saying they're poetic stuff.
- 1:38:56[SPEAKER_24]: And we hear, and oh, how they don't,
- 1:39:00[SPEAKER_24]: the little children of stone age.
- 1:39:04[SPEAKER_24]: And then, the 18 inch stone hinge lowers in the frame.
- 1:39:07[SPEAKER_24]: Michael McKee's reaction to this thing is astounding.
- 1:39:15[SPEAKER_24]: Well, it would funny, too, is that it's a really small stage.
- 1:39:19[SPEAKER_24]: It's not like there was room for giant stuff.
- 1:39:22[SPEAKER_24]: And then Nigel's playing on the mandolin and then some little people come in dressed as, you know, dwarves and dance around the snow and kick it and knock it over or almost knock it over.
- 1:39:36[SPEAKER_24]: By the way, this was in the demo.
- 1:39:38[SPEAKER_24]: This was one of the things they shot for the film.
- 1:39:39[SPEAKER_24]: And I also think, by the way, if you're not into this movie, at this point, you're fully out of this movie.
- 1:39:44[SPEAKER_24]: Oh, yeah.
- 1:39:45[SPEAKER_06]: You know, I don't know.
- 1:39:47[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, I don't know how you made it this part, really.
- 1:39:49[SPEAKER_24]: And you could hear what the line before was, is that Ian, in the moment before this next scene started, this is something like, oh, the band was a little off tonight.
- 1:39:56[SPEAKER_11]: I do not for one thing that the problem was that the band was down.
- 1:39:59[SPEAKER_11]: I think that the problem may have been that there was a stone-end monument on the stage.
- 1:40:08[SPEAKER_24]: And then Ian tries to pass it off on Nigel, just the way that Angelica Houston blamed him.
- 1:40:13[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, look, it said 18 inches.
- 1:40:15[SPEAKER_05]: All right, I know he did, and that's what I'm talking about.
- 1:40:17[SPEAKER_05]: There's different street fake ninches.
- 1:40:18[SPEAKER_05]: It's not my problem.
- 1:40:19[SPEAKER_11]: I do what I'm talking about.
- 1:40:20[SPEAKER_11]: But you're not as confused as him, are you?
- 1:40:23[SPEAKER_11]: I mean, it's not your job to be as confused as Nigel.
- 1:40:26[SPEAKER_11]: It's you.
- 1:40:29[SPEAKER_11]: It's something about it.
- 1:40:30[SPEAKER_11]: You may be taken on more than you can handle.
- 1:40:34[SPEAKER_24]: And suddenly, the scene has become about something else.
- 1:40:37[SPEAKER_20]: Oh, so I'm back in the first time you mess things up, is it?
- 1:40:40[SPEAKER_04]: David, whenever a single bumper a ruffle comes into this little fantasy adolescent fantasy world that you guys, you guys have built around yourself, you start screaming like a bunch of ponsi hairdressers.
- 1:40:51[SPEAKER_24]: By the way, here is a small filmmaking thing.
- 1:40:53[SPEAKER_24]: This will be one of the only filmmaking points in all of this part.
- 1:40:57[SPEAKER_24]: If you watch this scene, there's a TV in the background of the scene, and the TV is like the vertical hold, which is something that only old people would know what it is, seems like it's off, and the image is like rolling through and not staying, the reason for this is actually a technical reason which is its frame rate, which is that film is shot at 24 frames per second.
- 1:41:15[SPEAKER_24]: and TV at the time was 29.97 frames per second.
- 1:41:20[SPEAKER_24]: So what's happening as the frames are moving through the TV, they're not matching up to the moment that the image of film is being taken.
- 1:41:27[SPEAKER_24]: And so the frame rates are out of sync, and that's why the TV looks like that.
- 1:41:31[SPEAKER_24]: When you have more money, you can buy a TV that will play back the image at 24 frames a second, and then you don't have this problem.
- 1:41:39[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 1:41:39[SPEAKER_24]: But they obviously didn't have this money.
- 1:41:40[SPEAKER_06]: Oh, you're back.
- 1:41:41[SPEAKER_04]: Do you know what I spent my time doing?
- 1:41:43[SPEAKER_04]: I sleep two or three hours a night.
- 1:41:45[SPEAKER_04]: There's no sex and drugs for Ian David.
- 1:41:47[SPEAKER_04]: You know what I do?
- 1:41:48[SPEAKER_04]: I find lost luggage.
- 1:41:49[SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
- 1:41:50[SPEAKER_04]: I locate mandolin strings in the middle of our stews.
- 1:41:53[SPEAKER_04]: You know?
- 1:41:53[SPEAKER_04]: I prized the rent out of the local Hebrews.
- 1:41:55[SPEAKER_24]: I'm a Jewish man who is going to say, I think that is a hilarious little bit of anti-Semitism.
- 1:42:00[SPEAKER_24]: David starts talking in Chineen in a rubs and says, What David's trying to say?
- 1:42:08[SPEAKER_24]: I think it's always great when you interrupt someone by saying what they are trying to say.
- 1:42:13[SPEAKER_20]: You could maybe do with some help.
- 1:42:16[SPEAKER_11]: Maybe there's someone already in the organization.
- 1:42:19[SPEAKER_11]: We don't have to pay insurance.
- 1:42:20[SPEAKER_11]: You don't have to pay extra room, etc.
- 1:42:22[SPEAKER_11]: Since she's already here, she's already among us.
- 1:42:25[SPEAKER_24]: And the wave of reactions that goes around the room at this.
- 1:42:29[SPEAKER_24]: Well, when they realize who the she is and the look from Derek.
- 1:42:36[SPEAKER_24]: And again, we've all been in this where you just, you're like, okay, I'm in a slow motion train wreck.
- 1:42:42[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 1:42:42[SPEAKER_14]: Yeah.
- 1:42:43[SPEAKER_24]: I don't think there's anything I can do to stop it.
- 1:42:47[SPEAKER_24]: I just have to sit in the caboose and wait to die.
- 1:42:50[SPEAKER_04]: This is my position, okay?
- 1:42:53[SPEAKER_04]: I am not managing it with you or any other one, especially when you dress like an Australian's nightmare.
- 1:42:58[SPEAKER_04]: So fuck you.
- 1:42:59[SPEAKER_04]: And fuck all of you.
- 1:43:00[SPEAKER_04]: Because I quit.
- 1:43:01[SPEAKER_24]: Then Derek, and again, it's a perfect button.
- 1:43:04[SPEAKER_13]: Now raise a practical question at this point.
- 1:43:08[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah.
- 1:43:08[SPEAKER_13]: We can do Stone Age tomorrow.
- 1:43:10[SPEAKER_00]: Now we're not going to fucking do Stone Age.
- 1:43:14[SPEAKER_24]: Cut to the airport.
- 1:43:15[SPEAKER_24]: And it first, she seems like she's handling things.
- 1:43:19[SPEAKER_24]: So like, here I've got all your tickets, everything's organized.
- 1:43:22[SPEAKER_24]: I've worked out a whole bunch of charts, and we're like, oh, she's got charts.
- 1:43:24[SPEAKER_24]: This is great.
- 1:43:25[SPEAKER_24]: Oh, they're astrology charts.
- 1:43:29[SPEAKER_09]: And how would you characterize your relationship with David over the years has it changed in any way?
- 1:43:36[SPEAKER_24]: This is where I won't say Nigel's being sophisticated, but you can see that he is not going to answer the interviewer truthfully at this moment, you know, which you don't talk about the shit within the band to the outside world.
- 1:43:59[SPEAKER_11]: we really have a relationship is way, way, way past.
- 1:44:03[SPEAKER_24]: Cut to them arguing in the studio about what they're recording, which I always thought was a reference to let it be.
- 1:44:09[SPEAKER_24]: I always thought this was a George Harrison thing.
- 1:44:11[SPEAKER_24]: They say it's the Trogs that was actually referencing and apparent, it's on YouTube.
- 1:44:16[SPEAKER_24]: You can listen to the audio of the Trogs arguing in the studio about, there's something about fairy dust and guitar licks and things like that.
- 1:44:24[SPEAKER_24]: Um, interesting.
- 1:44:26[SPEAKER_24]: Uh, so they're yelling at each other and of course, Jeanine comes up and then we cut to Derek always saying, you know, focusing on the good.
- 1:44:35[SPEAKER_13]: He says we're very lucky in a sense that we've got two visionaries in the band of people like that.
- 1:44:42[SPEAKER_13]: The two totally distinct types of visionaries, it's like fire and ice basically.
- 1:44:46[SPEAKER_13]: You see, you know, I feel my roles to in the band is to be kind of in the middle of that kind of like
- 1:44:55[SPEAKER_23]: I can't, that's the button, you know, I love the genius of him referencing Shalian Byron.
- 1:45:01[SPEAKER_23]: So like, you know, you're looking at this guy, you don't think much about him, and he's hiding...
- 1:45:05[SPEAKER_23]: big cucumbers in aluminum foil and it's pants, but he does know about shell, he had borrowed it shit.
- 1:45:10[SPEAKER_24]: So it's just like, that's why he's but that's why he's got the pipe.
- 1:45:14[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, you know what I mean?
- 1:45:15[SPEAKER_23]: Right.
- 1:45:15[SPEAKER_24]: Because he's it's it's I think the pipe is as much his affectation as the cricket bat is in.
- 1:45:22[SPEAKER_24]: You know, it's like, I am telling you what I want you to think I am.
- 1:45:27[SPEAKER_24]: You know, we're in Seattle, Washington and we're talking about going to the club.
- 1:45:32[SPEAKER_24]: And then this is when Janine says, no, we're going to an Air Force
- 1:45:36[SPEAKER_24]: The level of the loneliness, like what's I think this is like a movie searching for a bottom, you know what I mean, like how how low can we possibly go and at the Air Force base, which looks nothing like an Air Force base to me, we meet Fred Willard.
- 1:45:52[SPEAKER_24]: Uh, and they had, they had done all sorts of comedy with him.
- 1:45:54[SPEAKER_24]: They had been in, you know, because all these groups sort of did stuff together in one way or another, and I, it's so funny, I have never been to the biggest Fred Willard fan.
- 1:46:01[SPEAKER_03]: What?
- 1:46:02[SPEAKER_24]: I've never been, I'm sorry, like, I'm going to need to go, guys.
- 1:46:05[SPEAKER_03]: I'm so, I'm going to have to leave now.
- 1:46:10[SPEAKER_24]: Wow.
- 1:46:11[SPEAKER_24]: Look, I, I, he doesn't really make me laugh.
- 1:46:14[SPEAKER_24]: And yet all of the people who I adore love him, so I will, I will state right now for the record that clearly I am wrong.
- 1:46:22[SPEAKER_22]: Find me.
- 1:46:23[SPEAKER_22]: I start by saying how thrilled we are to have you here.
- 1:46:25[SPEAKER_22]: We are such fans of your music and all of your records I'm not speaking of yours personally, but the whole genre or the rock and roll and something of the exciting things that are happening in the music today I will I will say that that is a very very funny line Yes, and then the last thing he says is and I have just one request which you play a couple of slow numbers, so I can dance cut to working on a sex fund
- 1:46:51[SPEAKER_24]: You served in the military, does this with anything like a military group?
- 1:47:05[SPEAKER_23]: I mean, there's so much about this entire scene that is genius, because right, she has no contacts in the business.
- 1:47:12[SPEAKER_23]: So when a gig is cancelled, she can't really call up another, you know, another arena or a promoter and be like, hey, can you have a little bit of a commentary of these people who think they can just do it.
- 1:47:27[SPEAKER_23]: It's not that easy.
- 1:47:28[SPEAKER_23]: It's not it's always built on who you know in relationships.
- 1:47:31[SPEAKER_23]: So the best she can do clearly is this air force base and I love that they shoot.
- 1:47:37[SPEAKER_23]: They have shots of the bit and I don't know how.
- 1:47:40[SPEAKER_23]: whatever's name is Begmini, whatever's name is, how he got in there to shoot those established things shots before they even show up, but it works so well that you're seeing these people who are totally not the crowd for their music, they're dancing, so immediately you set up the whole shit, this is going to be terrible.
- 1:47:57[SPEAKER_23]: and then have the Fred Willow thing self-important military guys kind of like what Bruno Kirby plays in good morning Vietnam.
- 1:48:05[SPEAKER_23]: Oh, yeah.
- 1:48:05[SPEAKER_23]: Oh, I used to do some jokes myself.
- 1:48:07[SPEAKER_23]: I had a character and thinks he's funny Fred Willow playing that kind of character thinking he's just as funny with the long hair and all this
- 1:48:14[SPEAKER_23]: And you know, oh, I've had an extension and bands and all that.
- 1:48:17[SPEAKER_23]: So all of it is just so funny.
- 1:48:19[SPEAKER_23]: And then they end up here.
- 1:48:20[SPEAKER_23]: And as you said, Steve, this is the film searching for the bottom.
- 1:48:23[SPEAKER_23]: This is absolutely the bottom that a bunch of rock and rollers are going to play their kind of music for these stick in the mud type of proper people.
- 1:48:33[SPEAKER_23]: that you would see in an air force base.
- 1:48:34[SPEAKER_23]: So, there's just so much about it that's genius.
- 1:48:37[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that didn't want it in the first place.
- 1:48:40[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, right exactly.
- 1:48:41[SPEAKER_24]: And they don't know how to, it's like because the opposite, I think the opposite is in the blues brothers where they're pretending to be the good old blues brothers.
- 1:48:48[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 1:48:49[SPEAKER_24]: And that's the scene where they're absolutely the wrong band for the job.
- 1:48:52[SPEAKER_24]: But what they realize is what this crowd needs and they're so great that they can become what that crowd needs.
- 1:48:59[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
- 1:49:00[SPEAKER_24]: Spinal Tap cannot.
- 1:49:01[SPEAKER_24]: That's that right.
- 1:49:02[SPEAKER_24]: That spinal tap is spinal tap and they're playing sex farm, which again has fantastic lyrics and then And then and they totally not going over it all and then to make matters worse We planted it much earlier in the movie, but that radio Transmitter on the guitar starts picking up the air traffic controllers
- 1:49:25[SPEAKER_24]: to which, and I totally relate to this, David starts laughing.
- 1:49:29[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, yeah, Nigel does not think it's funny.
- 1:49:31[SPEAKER_24]: He throws down his guitar and walks off the stage.
- 1:49:35[SPEAKER_09]: Has he ever done this before, has he ever?
- 1:49:38[SPEAKER_09]: Well, no, quit the band.
- 1:49:39[SPEAKER_11]: Well, no, but it's, you can't understand it, like in the world of rock and roll.
- 1:49:43[SPEAKER_11]: There are certain changes that sometimes occur.
- 1:49:47[SPEAKER_11]: You read that, you know, you saw exactly how many people have been in this band over your 37 people.
- 1:49:51[SPEAKER_11]: I've been in this band over the years.
- 1:49:55[SPEAKER_24]: So he's already rationalized Nigel away and Marty is shocked that he's lumping nightling with these people that he did with, you know, and he's right to be shocked.
- 1:50:06[SPEAKER_11]: Well, I'm sure I feel much worse if I want to under such heavy sedation, but still in all, I mean, you've got to be realistic about this sort of thing, you know.
- 1:50:13[SPEAKER_24]: Cut to the theme land amusement park in Stockton, California.
- 1:50:20[SPEAKER_24]: I don't think the Air Force base is the bottom.
- 1:50:22[SPEAKER_24]: I think this is the bottom.
- 1:50:24[SPEAKER_24]: Oh yeah.
- 1:50:24[SPEAKER_24]: So by the way, this is a shot in Magic Mountain.
- 1:50:27[SPEAKER_24]: This is where we see the sign that says Puppet Show and Spinal Tap.
- 1:50:32[SPEAKER_21]: If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put Spinal Tap first and Puppet Show deluxe.
- 1:50:41[SPEAKER_24]: And I love Derek who says it's a morale booster, so I have a story to tell.
- 1:50:49[SPEAKER_24]: I think maybe at some point I told the story before on on the show, but when I was after college, I had a job, which I know I've said before working in a copy store making copies.
- 1:51:00[SPEAKER_24]: And I was the assistant manager.
- 1:51:02[SPEAKER_24]: What I not sure if I've told is about the manager of the coffee store.
- 1:51:06[SPEAKER_24]: It was a guy in his 40s whose name was John Peterson.
- 1:51:09[SPEAKER_24]: And he was a really great guy.
- 1:51:11[SPEAKER_24]: And I was in my mid 20s.
- 1:51:13[SPEAKER_24]: And he was just hilarious.
- 1:51:14[SPEAKER_24]: And we laughed and joked all the time.
- 1:51:16[SPEAKER_24]: Had a great time.
- 1:51:17[SPEAKER_24]: And one day, I'm driving to work.
- 1:51:18[SPEAKER_24]: And I heard on the radio, the Davy Jones, from the monkeys, was playing at the Marin County Fair.
- 1:51:25[SPEAKER_24]: And I walked into John Peterson this guy really liked in his 40s and I said, Oh, can you believe I'm what's it got to be like to be Davey Jones, who was the monkeys and they were, you know, he's so huge in the 60s and now he's saying playing at a county fair in Marin County.
- 1:51:39[SPEAKER_24]: He's not even a very big side.
- 1:51:40[SPEAKER_24]: Like, it's not like the LA county fair.
- 1:51:41[SPEAKER_24]: It's a Marin County fair.
- 1:51:42[SPEAKER_24]: That's just got to suck.
- 1:51:44[SPEAKER_24]: And John Peterson, yeah, he said, yeah, or it might suck that to have a one, a number one song when you were in your teens in the 60s and then in your
- 1:51:55[SPEAKER_24]: And I went, what, and he said, did you ever hear of a band called the Beau Brumbles?
- 1:52:02[SPEAKER_24]: Oh, John, do you know the Beau Brumbles?
- 1:52:04[SPEAKER_23]: Yeah, um, um, uh, something about day or something like, I can't remember the song.
- 1:52:09[SPEAKER_23]: Their big hit was laugh.
- 1:52:11[SPEAKER_23]: Yeah, laugh.
- 1:52:12[SPEAKER_07]: That's great.
- 1:52:26[SPEAKER_24]: John Peterson, who was the manager of the copy store was the drummer of the Bob Rommels.
- 1:52:33[SPEAKER_24]: And had, they were on the Flintstones.
- 1:52:35[SPEAKER_24]: They were a big moderate mid 60s hit.
- 1:52:40[SPEAKER_24]: They had three or four albums.
- 1:52:41[SPEAKER_24]: He played around with a lot of musicians.
- 1:52:43[SPEAKER_24]: He had a rock star story of getting on drugs and off drugs.
- 1:52:48[SPEAKER_24]: And him working the band, being the manager of the copy store was him trying to put his life together after all this.
- 1:52:53[SPEAKER_24]: And I just, and so like watching Spinal Tap walk into the music park, you know, to play, after the puppets,
- 1:53:01[SPEAKER_24]: I just, there are way more John Peterson's and people like this who had brushes with fame and then had to find a way to keep working, you know, well, I just tried to find them on Spotify but couldn't unfortunately, so maybe for the song I was going to give them some clicks.
- 1:53:18[SPEAKER_24]: I will totally send you their song, you'll know the song, you've heard it, you've heard this song.
- 1:53:23[SPEAKER_23]: He was the drummer, so it's even funnier.
- 1:53:25[SPEAKER_23]: It's even funnier.
- 1:53:26[SPEAKER_23]: I don't get drummer in their band, given what happens to the drummers in this room, what an interesting reference.
- 1:53:32[SPEAKER_24]: And then we're going over their set list, I love the line, when they figure out what songs they can do without Nigel.
- 1:53:44[SPEAKER_24]: solution jazz Odyssey.
- 1:53:47[SPEAKER_24]: Well, cut to they picked the perfect venue, by the way, for that amusement park little venue, very, very few people in the audience, and they go into their jazz exploration written by Derek Smalls.
- 1:54:03[SPEAKER_23]: This is like going to see Shannon at Orlando, when going to see him do the well, West Show.
- 1:54:08[SPEAKER_23]: That's the auditorium, the outdoor auditorium, I
- 1:54:12[SPEAKER_23]: And so seeing the pan down and there's still people there like cheering.
- 1:54:17[SPEAKER_23]: Sure, but like he, he's trying to make the best of it by saying this is 2.0 or what are the rebirth.
- 1:54:22[SPEAKER_23]: Right.
- 1:54:22[SPEAKER_02]: Mock to anything.
- 1:54:24[SPEAKER_23]: Yeah, it's right.
- 1:54:25[SPEAKER_23]: And then you're just like watching and you're like, this is so sad.
- 1:54:29[SPEAKER_23]: So incredibly sad.
- 1:54:31[SPEAKER_03]: But again, this does the same thing.
- 1:54:33[SPEAKER_03]: Just, it's a little just a little different.
- 1:54:36[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's right.
- 1:54:37[SPEAKER_03]: You're a little more high.
- 1:54:38[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, a little different.
- 1:54:40[SPEAKER_03]: I won't fish by the way.
- 1:54:41[SPEAKER_03]: Don't people don't attack me and go to see them three days in Los Angeles.
- 1:54:44[SPEAKER_03]: I'm a fan.
- 1:54:45[SPEAKER_03]: We'll make this one of them right now.
- 1:54:47[SPEAKER_03]: Back off.
- 1:54:48[SPEAKER_24]: Um, oh, there are a lot of angry comments on YouTube that we just avoided.
- 1:54:54[SPEAKER_24]: I thank God.
- 1:54:55[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
- 1:54:56[SPEAKER_24]: Don't fuck with fish.
- 1:54:57[SPEAKER_24]: That's what I've always heard.
- 1:54:58[SPEAKER_24]: You're like, do not.
- 1:55:00[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 1:55:00[SPEAKER_24]: We're at the end of tour party in LA.
- 1:55:03[SPEAKER_17]: You know, it's like this year last wall.
- 1:55:05[SPEAKER_17]: So we talk in the end of this final tap or you're going to try to milk it for a few more years in Europe.
- 1:55:10[SPEAKER_24]: Which just the word milk it is just so sad.
- 1:55:13[SPEAKER_24]: I'm going to play this monologue in its entirety because I think it's a thing of beauty.
- 1:55:20[SPEAKER_11]: Well, I don't really think that the end can be assessed as of itself as being the end because what does the end feel like?
- 1:55:30[SPEAKER_11]: It's like saying when you try to extrapolate the end of the universe, you say the end if the universe is indeed infinite.
- 1:55:37[SPEAKER_11]: then how what does that mean, how far is she is all the way and then if it stops, what's stopping it and what's behind, what's stopping it.
- 1:55:44[SPEAKER_11]: So what's the end, you know, is my question to you.
- 1:55:53[SPEAKER_06]: Yep.
- 1:55:56[SPEAKER_23]: So a lot of drugs.
- 1:56:00[SPEAKER_24]: And then we have Derek and David have this conversation, which I totally, I totally have had versions of this conversation too.
- 1:56:08[SPEAKER_13]: Yeah, we had a 15-year ride, mate.
- 1:56:10[SPEAKER_13]: They knew it was to be a 45-year-old rock and roll a font in the round for people that they're a huge, they're true.
- 1:56:16[SPEAKER_24]: It's so funny now because even at this era, none of us believe, like, oh, by the way, Mick Jagger and the stones and their partner, they're all going to still be playing 40 years from now in their 80s, right?
- 1:56:32[SPEAKER_24]: like that would have sounded fucking ridiculous, and now, and then they say, and you could do all those projects we didn't have time for, and I love the all of these.
- 1:56:40[SPEAKER_24]: I love the rock and roll music based on the life of Jack the Ripper, and like the like the earlier one, and like that you pointed out, I think this is perfect improv.
- 1:56:56[SPEAKER_23]: I don't see Jack.
- 1:56:59[SPEAKER_11]: I've always wanted to do a collection of my acoustic numbers with the London Philharmonic, I guess you know.
- 1:57:05[SPEAKER_24]: I am sure the London Phil is aching to do that with you David Sainhaven.
- 1:57:10[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:57:11[SPEAKER_23]: Yep.
- 1:57:12[SPEAKER_23]: And this is kind of prescient, isn't it?
- 1:57:14[SPEAKER_23]: Because I don't know how many albums there were where a Philharmonic was,
- 1:57:21[SPEAKER_23]: doing stuff with the artist to create these reinterpretation of their music, because now it's everywhere.
- 1:57:31[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, that's a great point.
- 1:57:32[SPEAKER_23]: Yeah.
- 1:57:33[SPEAKER_23]: Even even people who passed on like Elvis had a Priscilla Presley had one done a few years ago with
- 1:57:40[SPEAKER_23]: the music of Elvis with Elvis singing along, even though he's not around anymore.
- 1:57:44[SPEAKER_23]: So they set their stuff to Elvis's rhythm of singing.
- 1:57:47[SPEAKER_23]: And so McCartney's done a few of these himself with his music as well.
- 1:57:51[SPEAKER_23]: So yeah, it's a little bit pressing because I don't remember that at all in 84.
- 1:57:56[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, I don't.
- 1:57:57[SPEAKER_24]: I actually really want, and I think it's the change of
- 1:58:01[SPEAKER_24]: you know it used to be that there was the intellectual music of classical music and that was totally separate from popular music and now I think all the intellectuals accepted I guess this rock and roll stuff's not going away I guess still you know I guess we got to you know join with it again the button on the scene is great we're lucky yeah I mean people should people
- 1:58:25[SPEAKER_24]: We're in the green room before our concert and as Janine is talking to David in comes Nigel.
- 1:58:33[SPEAKER_24]: And there are these looks and man, David is real not nice to Nigel.
- 1:58:38[SPEAKER_24]: So did you just come to hang around backstage, like a real rock around and say what you're doing?
- 1:58:43[SPEAKER_11]: I'm really a messenger.
- 1:58:44[SPEAKER_24]: came from Ian and tells them that sex farm is on the charts in Japan, and Ian has asked if tap would be interested in reforming to do a tour of Japan.
- 1:58:55[SPEAKER_11]: So you've come back to a re-plug our life support systems in, is that it by the grace of your by the stroke of your hand?
- 1:59:02[SPEAKER_11]: You're going to set is that what you're going to do?
- 1:59:04[SPEAKER_11]: You're going to bring us back to life.
- 1:59:05[SPEAKER_11]: So that would you've come here for?
- 1:59:07[SPEAKER_11]: I mean, I'll tell you the fucking
- 1:59:10[SPEAKER_11]: No, that you just fly and come on with us.
- 1:59:13[SPEAKER_24]: It's time to go on stage and he walks past Nigel to go on stage.
- 1:59:17[SPEAKER_24]: And they walk away leaving Nigel all alone.
- 1:59:19[SPEAKER_24]: I think this next sequence is brilliant filmmaking.
- 1:59:24[SPEAKER_24]: It is so earned.
- 1:59:26[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
- 1:59:27[SPEAKER_24]: And I don't think it...
- 1:59:28[SPEAKER_24]: I don't think it moved me when I was watching this 20, 30 years ago.
- 1:59:32[SPEAKER_24]: I was moved by Nigel backstage in this scene, you know?
- 1:59:36[SPEAKER_24]: because they're going into big bottom and he's just offstage watching and you could see him at first, he's just like moving with music a little bit and then he starts to move his mouth to it and David has looked over at him a couple of times and you could see it's such a lovely scene is what it is, I guess.
- 1:59:55[SPEAKER_24]: Is it there's Ris David is resisting and doesn't, but they fucking love playing together.
- 2:00:02[SPEAKER_24]: And David can't say, you know, it's like, I can't say, you know, to you, you know?
- 2:00:07[SPEAKER_24]: And finally, he gives that little head nod to say, come on, and Nigel gives him the, are you sure?
- 2:00:13[SPEAKER_24]: Look, and he's like, yeah, and he takes on his jacket and goes on stage, and there is a big, huge cheer, and he goes into his guitar solo, and it is so fucking spattest satisfied!
- 2:00:33[SPEAKER_24]: Like it is so like, yes, this feels so great.
- 2:00:36[SPEAKER_24]: And then that radio signal comes in again.
- 2:00:41[SPEAKER_24]: And if that, and that, so first of all, Nigel just coming back on stage and playing, I would be satisfied.
- 2:00:46[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, Nigel coming back on and playing and having the radio interference, I would be satisfied and laughing, but they are not yet done, because the drummer explodes.
- 2:00:56[SPEAKER_24]: Explodes.
- 2:00:59[SPEAKER_24]: You know what was coming.
- 2:01:00[SPEAKER_02]: You knew it was coming.
- 2:01:03[SPEAKER_24]: Not to Joe Mama Besser are new drummer on at Kobe Hall in Japan, and they're having it.
- 2:01:12[SPEAKER_24]: And by the way, it's a good thing that they have a Japanese flag so that we know that it's Japan, a couple of insubations, the audience, and they're having this concert, and it's going over huge.
- 2:01:22[SPEAKER_24]: And the moment with the three of them with Nigel in the middle doing that strange
- 2:01:32[SPEAKER_24]: Then we go into credits and we have what seemed like the outtakes.
- 2:01:37[SPEAKER_24]: I won't do all of them.
- 2:01:39[SPEAKER_24]: But I will ask what are your favorites.
- 2:01:42[SPEAKER_23]: I don't know.
- 2:01:42[SPEAKER_23]: I found these to be uncomfortable rather than funny.
- 2:01:45[SPEAKER_23]: So it was weird experience, so I don't know.
- 2:01:48[SPEAKER_23]: If there's one I like necessarily.
- 2:01:52[SPEAKER_23]: So you all go ahead, if you guess.
- 2:01:53[SPEAKER_03]: Steve, I'm trying to remember, too.
- 2:01:55[SPEAKER_03]: Was he was him asking about, would you be happy being a salesman?
- 2:01:59[SPEAKER_03]: Is that one of the... That's the last one.
- 2:02:01[SPEAKER_24]: That's the best one.
- 2:02:02[SPEAKER_24]: Marty asked Nigel, what would you do if you were playing rock and roll?
- 2:02:05[SPEAKER_24]: He'd work at a Harvard Dashery.
- 2:02:08[SPEAKER_24]: maybe self-shap pose and what's so funny about how he does it is he's talking about being a salesman and then he essentially brings Marty into his improv.
- 2:02:17[SPEAKER_11]: Yeah, would you?
- 2:02:18[SPEAKER_11]: What size do you wear, sir?
- 2:02:21[SPEAKER_11]: Then you want to meet?
- 2:02:22[SPEAKER_11]: Seven and a quarter.
- 2:02:24[SPEAKER_11]: I think we have that.
- 2:02:25[SPEAKER_24]: And Marty is trying to get out of the improv, right?
- 2:02:28[SPEAKER_11]: See that sort of thing.
- 2:02:29[SPEAKER_11]: I think I could probably master up.
- 2:02:32[SPEAKER_11]: Do you think you'd be happy doing that?
- 2:02:34[SPEAKER_11]: Right, don't know.
- 2:02:35[SPEAKER_11]: Well, what the hours?
- 2:02:44[SPEAKER_24]: Why so again Michael Ross is our guest as our expert I will ask you because he's gone through this and this is again white guffman This is like the three person and his character.
- 2:02:55[SPEAKER_03]: I mean guffman, right, which is like the complexity of him understanding what the role of this salesman is and that he's so embodies it
- 2:03:07[SPEAKER_03]: Then it's just like, the hours going, you know, left handed question that has seriously nothing to do with the craft, then in that moment becomes the most important thing.
- 2:03:20[SPEAKER_03]: It's so left field.
- 2:03:22[SPEAKER_03]: And again, I have to imagine, as we see in the four hours, because we're seeing all the good stuff.
- 2:03:29[SPEAKER_03]: These guys do this a lot, right?
- 2:03:31[SPEAKER_03]: And so you get the bend and twist that happens and these things, it's probably nine times out of 10 where it doesn't work.
- 2:03:36[SPEAKER_03]: But the one time where it does, it's all.
- 2:03:41[SPEAKER_24]: So you know, just to clear to me, is that we have the actor, Christopher Gast, and the director, Rob Reiner.
- 2:03:47[SPEAKER_24]: And the actor, Christopher Gast, is playing this character of Nigel.
- 2:03:51[SPEAKER_24]: and he's improvising and with in the improv he's Nigel begins improvising as the salesperson.
- 2:04:01[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 2:04:01[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 2:04:01[SPEAKER_24]: And then he draws the director who is improvising as the interviewer into improvising as the character who being sold to and then Nigel has so fully immersed himself in the character of the salesperson that he's entertaining the question of like,
- 2:04:20[SPEAKER_03]: You know, a very honest question like who's the conservatives.
- 2:04:25[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 2:04:26[SPEAKER_24]: Um, so obviously post for a movie like this is really difficult.
- 2:04:29[SPEAKER_24]: They have a hundred hours of footage.
- 2:04:30[SPEAKER_24]: You've got to find the structure.
- 2:04:32[SPEAKER_24]: You've got to find this.
- 2:04:32[SPEAKER_24]: We already talked about them re cutting the concert scene.
- 2:04:35[SPEAKER_24]: So it's more like they could see that they're playing their instruments.
- 2:04:38[SPEAKER_24]: We mentioned the first cut is four and a half hours long, and you can see that here's the most interesting thing I saw in the post production process was Rob Riner wanted the writing credit to go to the entire cast because the entire cast made up their lines.
- 2:05:04[SPEAKER_24]: Those three went to the writer's guild and said, we don't want the credit.
- 2:05:08[SPEAKER_24]: We think it should be the whole cast.
- 2:05:10[SPEAKER_24]: So the director, the producer, all the actors, the actual writers have all said to the writer's guild.
- 2:05:15[SPEAKER_24]: Look, everybody made up their own lines.
- 2:05:17[SPEAKER_24]: They all deserve credit.
- 2:05:19[SPEAKER_24]: The board of the writer's guild of America, the 15 members of the board took a vote and voted 15 to nothing to give the credit to guest, bikini, and heresherer, which is a bummer,
- 2:05:34[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 2:05:35[SPEAKER_24]: Um, it was not a hit.
- 2:05:37[SPEAKER_24]: It was like a few people kind of liked it.
- 2:05:39[SPEAKER_24]: And this is where VHS really changes the world.
- 2:05:42[SPEAKER_14]: Yeah.
- 2:05:42[SPEAKER_14]: Yeah.
- 2:05:42[SPEAKER_24]: You know, because people and people fell in love so much with this.
- 2:05:46[SPEAKER_24]: As we talk many times, they gone on tour multiple times as spinal tap.
- 2:05:51[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 2:05:52[SPEAKER_24]: When they go on tour, if they go to do an interview at a radio studio, you know, morning radio show or something, they go as spinal tap, which apparently pisses people off because they're like, no, I want
- 2:06:02[SPEAKER_24]: I'm talking to Christopher Guest.
- 2:06:04[SPEAKER_24]: I would like to ask Christopher Guest of question and they will not answer, they will be those characters.
- 2:06:09[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 2:06:10[SPEAKER_03]: And also, Anastine, as you probably know, too, that the folks then who later will appear, oh yeah, might he win, open hold them, and have the time people not knowing.
- 2:06:20[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's the things that are open, the band for the, for the, the band that we came to a home like, just joke inside joke inside joke.
- 2:06:29[SPEAKER_03]: I love it.
- 2:06:30[SPEAKER_24]: Um, they did not own any to the rights of their songs and they finally make a deal that basically they have a limited license, but something about the deal that they have is if they don't play the songs publicly every two years, they will lose their license.
- 2:06:45[SPEAKER_24]: So that's part of what their door schedule is about and then as you mentioned earlier.
- 2:06:49[SPEAKER_24]: In 2016, Harry Scheer, Studio Canal, who owned the right, who had bought the rights from whoever had the rights before, because they've gotten like $1.19 or something from $81 in merch and $98 in music sales is of 1996.
- 2:07:03[SPEAKER_03]: That's crazy.
- 2:07:05[SPEAKER_24]: It's a piece.
- 2:07:06[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, he sues them.
- 2:07:08[SPEAKER_24]: Riner, McCain and gas join in on the suit for $400 million is what they sued them for.
- 2:07:15[SPEAKER_24]: And they settled out of court.
- 2:07:17[SPEAKER_24]: So we don't know, they got something.
- 2:07:18[SPEAKER_24]: I'm assuming they got a fair amount of money.
- 2:07:20[SPEAKER_24]: But I don't know what it was.
- 2:07:21[SPEAKER_24]: And as both of you mentioned, they're working on a sequel.
- 2:07:24[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 2:07:24[SPEAKER_24]: Which boy I would love it to be funny.
- 2:07:28[SPEAKER_23]: even for your consideration, which a lot of people don't think is some of the best stuff, is still brilliantly hilarious to me, having lived in LA, having lived in Hollywood.
- 2:07:38[SPEAKER_23]: So, like, I can't, I've never seen him fail.
- 2:07:41[SPEAKER_23]: I don't think what any of his,
- 2:07:43[SPEAKER_23]: uh approach is Christopher guest the care the questions because he's directed there and the other ones afterwards right will Rob Ryder come back to director just be the actor No, that's a hard question.
- 2:07:52[SPEAKER_03]: You know he because he plays the character again going like he saw how bad the first one.
- 2:07:57[SPEAKER_03]: So he's trying to come back and like That would be great.
- 2:08:01[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's brilliant.
- 2:08:02[SPEAKER_03]: There's one more important thing, no, because, you know, brandings are really important thing, brandings, brandings, brandings are important thing.
- 2:08:09[SPEAKER_03]: And my brand will next come on, your shows, I'd like to get you guys gifts.
- 2:08:13[SPEAKER_03]: John, unfortunately you're in San Diego, I am.
- 2:08:16[SPEAKER_03]: I was an idiot, I showed up from this team's out today.
- 2:08:19[SPEAKER_03]: Luckily I did, because I brought you guys your gift.
- 2:08:21[SPEAKER_03]: He's going to have to give you half of it.
- 2:08:23[SPEAKER_03]: One part of it, you guys aren't going to be able to share.
- 2:08:26[SPEAKER_03]: Okay, so Steve, you can open up the square, kind of heavy one first.
- 2:08:31[SPEAKER_24]: I have this in my hand.
- 2:08:34[SPEAKER_23]: Wow, it is an actual wrapped gift.
- 2:08:36[SPEAKER_03]: It's wrapped.
- 2:08:37[SPEAKER_23]: Yeah.
- 2:08:37[SPEAKER_23]: For everyone else's guests on the show, this is the bar.
- 2:08:40[SPEAKER_03]: It's important.
- 2:08:41[SPEAKER_03]: It's important.
- 2:08:42[SPEAKER_03]: You don't even mean, they're just for Spag Apple.
- 2:08:44[SPEAKER_24]: Oh, I agree.
- 2:08:45[SPEAKER_24]: I feel it's metal.
- 2:08:46[SPEAKER_24]: There's something metal on the inside.
- 2:08:48[SPEAKER_24]: Oh, my God.
- 2:08:49[SPEAKER_24]: Oh.
- 2:08:50[SPEAKER_24]: So ladies and gentlemen, in the listening with your ears, I'm going to do something for you.
- 2:08:56[SPEAKER_24]: Oh.
- 2:08:57[SPEAKER_24]: That is the sound of a spinal tap lunchbox.
- 2:09:00[SPEAKER_24]: I've been looking for steam, so steam, I found out eBay, the guy goes, I threw in a few extra gifts, open that thing up and see what I'm opening up, we have a CD, the 60s, the NBC motion picture soundtrack CD.
- 2:09:18[SPEAKER_23]: Yes, of course, why not?
- 2:09:19[SPEAKER_24]: A VHS of fast times of original.
- 2:09:23[SPEAKER_24]: No, it's not, he crossed it out.
- 2:09:25[SPEAKER_24]: Oh, it's crossed out.
- 2:09:26[SPEAKER_24]: Wait, hold on.
- 2:09:27[SPEAKER_24]: What is in there?
- 2:09:29[SPEAKER_24]: The doors, hey, in a fast times of ridge run, nice.
- 2:09:35[SPEAKER_24]: Oh, the actual, so I can listen to the soundtrack and watch on VHS the 60.
- 2:09:39[SPEAKER_24]: Oh, nice.
- 2:09:40[SPEAKER_24]: By the way, do either of you have a VHS player?
- 2:09:42[SPEAKER_24]: Yes.
- 2:09:43[SPEAKER_24]: I do too.
- 2:09:45[SPEAKER_24]: Oh, that's why you're not getting these, John.
- 2:09:46[SPEAKER_24]: Oh, that's good to send me to you.
- 2:09:49[SPEAKER_24]: And the second VHS of the 60.
- 2:09:51[SPEAKER_24]: So I know they're different episodes.
- 2:09:52[SPEAKER_24]: Part one in part two.
- 2:09:53[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 2:09:54[SPEAKER_24]: Wow, this is absolutely incredible.
- 2:09:56[SPEAKER_24]: What does trust you so much?
- 2:09:57[SPEAKER_03]: So of course, he had to make sure that when he shipped it on an eBay that the 10 was kept well.
- 2:10:03[SPEAKER_03]: So why don't you up on this next one?
- 2:10:05[SPEAKER_03]: There's two of these in here.
- 2:10:07[SPEAKER_03]: One is for John once for you.
- 2:10:08[SPEAKER_03]: I do suggest you throw them away immediately.
- 2:10:10[SPEAKER_03]: You have to open them, but if John wants it,
- 2:10:14[SPEAKER_24]: Okay, there's some form of fabric.
- 2:10:17[SPEAKER_24]: Oh, okay.
- 2:10:18[SPEAKER_24]: I've opened up.
- 2:10:18[SPEAKER_24]: We have shorts.
- 2:10:20[SPEAKER_24]: Shirts.
- 2:10:21[SPEAKER_24]: Oh my God.
- 2:10:22[SPEAKER_24]: It's a keep truck in Casey popcorn festival.
- 2:10:26[SPEAKER_24]: But this is the guy.
- 2:10:27[SPEAKER_24]: What's the name of this character?
- 2:10:28[SPEAKER_24]: It's a famous like 60s characters.
- 2:10:32[SPEAKER_24]: It's not our crumb, but it's like one of those guys.
- 2:10:35[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 2:10:35[SPEAKER_24]: I wrote to him.
- 2:10:36[SPEAKER_03]: I said, how did you get up?
- 2:10:38[SPEAKER_03]: Because there were four more of those shirts that came with it.
- 2:10:40[SPEAKER_03]: I was like, how did you have access all your shirts?
- 2:10:46[SPEAKER_24]: All right, you found the world's most interesting eBay seller.
- 2:10:50[SPEAKER_24]: Really?
- 2:10:51[SPEAKER_03]: I'm more shit.
- 2:10:52[SPEAKER_06]: I'm so sorry.
- 2:10:54[SPEAKER_24]: That's a wow.
- 2:10:55[SPEAKER_24]: Michael Ross, you have, I've done yourself.
- 2:10:58[SPEAKER_24]: Yes.
- 2:10:59[SPEAKER_24]: Is he the only cinephiles guest who has brought us gifts?
- 2:11:02[SPEAKER_24]: You brought us gifts every time you came on the show.
- 2:11:04[SPEAKER_23]: Every time he's come on, yes.
- 2:11:05[SPEAKER_23]: I thought, Brought us something when we did the show.
- 2:11:08[SPEAKER_03]: It was stupid.
- 2:11:10[SPEAKER_23]: Yeah.
- 2:11:10[SPEAKER_23]: Yeah.
- 2:11:11[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah.
- 2:11:12[SPEAKER_23]: Yeah.
- 2:11:14[SPEAKER_24]: I will give my final thoughts on this first, which is that A, I've never had so much fun watching this as the last time, and I had even more fun talking about it, and this is like I would say is that the real gifted this movie is
- 2:11:31[SPEAKER_24]: quoting and talking about it and that's what makes it so much fun.
- 2:11:34[SPEAKER_24]: And particularly now that I'm old, and I've been through the pain that we've had a totally different experience.
- 2:11:42[SPEAKER_24]: You know what I was when I was 17 or something when I first saw it, I had never sat through the awkward meeting or saw the project going downhill.
- 2:11:49[SPEAKER_24]: I had never done that.
- 2:11:50[SPEAKER_24]: I've done all that now and this was fantastic.
- 2:11:53[SPEAKER_24]: John, what are your thoughts?
- 2:11:56[SPEAKER_23]: Yeah, it's such a fun film.
- 2:11:58[SPEAKER_23]: Here's the great things.
- 2:11:59[SPEAKER_23]: And I've said this numerous times on the show.
- 2:12:01[SPEAKER_23]: You know a film is a classic or good.
- 2:12:04[SPEAKER_23]: And by the way, it was on TCM and that is Turner Classic movies.
- 2:12:07[SPEAKER_23]: When you revisit it later in life, and it still works for you.
- 2:12:11[SPEAKER_23]: And it works for you in a different way.
- 2:12:13[SPEAKER_23]: or a new way or an interesting way and retains the humor.
- 2:12:17[SPEAKER_23]: It's still funny.
- 2:12:18[SPEAKER_23]: The jokes still work.
- 2:12:20[SPEAKER_23]: They still land the timing of the mall is still great.
- 2:12:23[SPEAKER_23]: And you're watching so many incredible talent and incredibly talented people throughout this film, just come on in and do quick scenes or a few scenes just to give the film even more humor, even more of a bite and an edge to it at the time.
- 2:12:39[SPEAKER_23]: And I think the gift of the film is,
- 2:12:41[SPEAKER_23]: Although it's making fun, it's not making fun in a gleeful desire to destroy the thing it's making fun up, which is incredibly difficult to do when you're doing a mockumentary.
- 2:12:53[SPEAKER_23]: I mean, mock is literally in the title of a mockumentary, and mock, of course, meaning to make fun of in a negative way, possibly, negative connotation.
- 2:13:01[SPEAKER_23]: And that isn't the way you feel when you're watching this.
- 2:13:03[SPEAKER_23]: You actually care for these characters, you sympathize with them, you understand them, you want them not to fall into the same traps.
- 2:13:10[SPEAKER_23]: wish they were a little more intelligent so they wouldn't get into these situations.
- 2:13:13[SPEAKER_23]: But then you wouldn't have the movie if they had that.
- 2:13:16[SPEAKER_23]: So that's the joy of this thing is you actually do care about all of these.
- 2:13:20[SPEAKER_23]: They're not self-involved asshole rock stars.
- 2:13:23[SPEAKER_23]: They are people who simply just wanted to keep a maintaining success and sadly,
- 2:13:29[SPEAKER_23]: in the experience, the downfall of their middleing success, and then just an incredibly perfectly timed last wave of their fame, which is fun to watch.
- 2:13:43[SPEAKER_23]: So I think that's the gift of the move for all the humor and the biting satire and the jokes that their expense, you actually do end up caring about these characters and enjoying the humor and enjoying the way that it ends.
- 2:13:56[SPEAKER_24]: Michael Ross, I won't ask for your final thoughts because I'm sure that you'll have more thoughts on this movie for the rest of your life.
- 2:14:02[SPEAKER_24]: But what are your current thoughts on this is final tab?
- 2:14:07[SPEAKER_03]: So it had been a couple years since I had seen it.
- 2:14:10[SPEAKER_03]: And yeah, John Nell that for me, which is, I was just so happy that it was even funnier than I remembered it.
- 2:14:19[SPEAKER_03]: I remember I had all the quotes, I had all the stuff and Steve, I, you know, take a look
- 2:14:25[SPEAKER_03]: being older, it hurts more, but it makes it that much more funny, which I just is awesome, which also leads me to like, now I feel like this is something I can share with a, you know, our, our, our niece was here who's 22.
- 2:14:40[SPEAKER_03]: And she said, yeah, well, it is.
- 2:14:42[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm like, no, you know what, at Christmas, it won't just be Christmas vacation.
- 2:14:47[SPEAKER_03]: It's going to be a little tab too.
- 2:14:49[SPEAKER_03]: Like honestly, I think it's something I can honestly share.
- 2:14:52[SPEAKER_03]: And you don't have to necessarily like explain the origins and everything, because it is so damn funny.
- 2:14:58[SPEAKER_24]: Yeah, just because you brought up Christmas vacation, I have one more thought I want to throw out, which is that people don't fully appreciate that comedy is largely about pain, you know, like that's, it is, it is, that's why we laugh, that's why we have this whole system is to deal with pain, you know, and both Christmas vacation and spinal tap.
- 2:15:19[SPEAKER_24]: it's so much pain and it's so funny.
- 2:15:22[SPEAKER_24]: So that's what we think it's final tap.
- 2:15:24[SPEAKER_24]: Of course, we'd love to hear your thoughts, your favorite quotes, your favorite moment, your favorite songs, your favorite lyrics.
- 2:15:29[SPEAKER_24]: We would love to hear all of that on our Facebook page and just do a search for the cine files.
