- 0:00[SPEAKER_02]: Welcome back to Pickle Ballers.
- 0:01[SPEAKER_02]: Today we have Christian Allshin here with us.
- 0:04[SPEAKER_03]: One of the best players in the world.
- 0:06[SPEAKER_03]: It's also crazy.
- 0:07[SPEAKER_03]: You just dropped the tweener king nickname.
- 0:09[SPEAKER_00]: It was time.
- 0:10[SPEAKER_00]: It was time to drop it.
- 0:11[SPEAKER_00]: James and that, which is like we should have like a WWE style like beef.
- 0:15[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, I don't have to fake it.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know about you.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm just like, I don't like it.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_00]: I played my junior year of tennis and I really saw a year.
- 0:26[SPEAKER_00]: Then you go 18 and I did go 18 and I know.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_00]: So what do you want to do after college?
- 0:30[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, I think I want to go pro and pickleball.
- 0:32[SPEAKER_03]: You show how much you care and how much you want to win.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_00]: I would lose a match and it would be like a knife in the heart.
- 0:38[SPEAKER_00]: You never know what's going to happen.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_03]: You never know what tomorrow holds.
- 0:41[SPEAKER_03]: Who's the hardest player for you to play against?
- 0:46[SPEAKER_02]: Welcome back to Pickleballers, delivered by DoorDash.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_02]: Today we have Christian Olshin here with us.
- 0:53[SPEAKER_02]: One of the best players in the world.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_02]: Super hard work are super talented.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_02]: And this guy wears his heart on his sleeve, so he's super fun to watch.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_02]: I've actually known him for...
- 1:03[SPEAKER_02]: Hello, you know each other now like 15 years we probably started playing when we were like 10 years old 12 Maybe even maybe even younger.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's been in 2008.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_00]: It's been it's been a long time.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_02]: It has been and we were like I wouldn't say we were like Friends because you were a Florida and I was in LA, but like we played the same tournaments and like we we knew each other fairly well But we didn't become friends so we like started playing pickle ball, which is interesting
- 1:23[SPEAKER_02]: 100%.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_03]: Christian, thanks for being here.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_03]: This is we've we've we've shot a few episodes down here in Boca or Del Rey wherever we are and this is one of the episodes I've been really excited about and we interviewed you on kitchen conversations with Jason early on.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_03]: And you were like a young cocky kid, you were like, oh, I'm gonna do the tweeners.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_03]: I'm gonna do all the shots.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_03]: And we both kind of thought he's not gonna get there.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_03]: He's not willing to play the game the right way, just because I feel like you were like, oh, I'm gonna be that guy, and you've really ascended.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, you're a total beast.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_03]: You're one of the best players in the world.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_03]: And you're also kind of like in a nightmare.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_03]: You're a little mysterious.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_03]: It's so excited to get to know you more.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you both for having me super excited to be on here again after two or three years.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I'm excited to be here.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_03]: And I think it's also crazy.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_03]: You just dropped the tweener King nickname.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_03]: Dude, yeah, what the heck?
- 2:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, it was time to drop it.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_00]: how didn't really hit like a good tweeter in like over a year.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_00]: It was, it was, it was, it was you was the Instagram handle.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_02]: It was like the, it was part of you, you know?
- 2:37[SPEAKER_00]: I agree with that.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's why changing it was such a big deal.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's why it actually got so much traction when I posted it.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, oh, I'll post it.
- 2:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'll be a good post by posted it like 3300 plus likes and like 36 hours.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, well, that's a, that's a record for a good post.
- 2:56[SPEAKER_00]: I think the problem is
- 2:59[SPEAKER_00]: It's a little, it was a little silly of a name.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_00]: I love, I love it.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_00]: I love hitting the trick shots.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_00]: I think tweeter was the one that, that actually originates from Dave Fleming.
- 3:11[SPEAKER_00]: He said, when I was playing Ben, he's like, this guy's the tweeter king.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_00]: I have to write it like two or three winners.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_03]: And yeah, but a lot of the shots you're hitting were completely not necessary, right?
- 3:22[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, like some more crazy.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_03]: Well, I loved it, but I'm like, what is that like?
- 3:27[UNKNOWN]: Why?
- 3:27[SPEAKER_00]: Well, they weren't necessary, but they did take a lot of the pressure off me, which is a little bit of it.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_00]: They made it fun, they gave me something to clip, they gave me some clips, they gave me something to talk about, keep it fun.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I knew I wasn't going to be winning tournaments from the first week, but I definitely knew I could.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_02]: It was really memorable.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, right, make a name for yourself.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_03]: I'll put on a show, too, like I think people like to watch you play because they know they're going to be entertained, they know they're going to, you know, sequel shots, see a lot of emotion, a lot of emotion, which I think is like, it will get into this, but it's one of those things where I think you, you show how much you care and how much you want to win.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_03]: And I remember one of the first moments about you that really stood out was in Atlanta, and you were playing Ben, and you beat Ben, and people were like, yeah, and you were like, come on guys, like, I'm, that was a huge deal for me, like, and people like, you know, cheered more and I really respected that.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_03]: I was like, this kind of care is like, let's give him his moment.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_03]: So,
- 4:31[SPEAKER_00]: I haven't been in Ben in single since then, but he doesn't play that much, so I don't get too many opportunities to be in him or at least this year.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_00]: The funny thing about that is I think a lot of people thought that we had just split because I lost the game before.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_00]: So people, I think a lot of people just didn't think it was over, but even then.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, come on, like, that was, I played really well.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't make any mistakes ended up winning.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_00]: And I've actually noticed that you can kind of do that.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_00]: The more, the more I played, especially this year, is if you have like a big point or if you're like playing, like you can, you can look at the crowd and you can be like, come on, come on, give me a little something and they'll listen.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like they will, they will listen.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_03]: And was it also in Atlanta where you lost, you lost a game or match?
- 5:17[SPEAKER_03]: And you stood there.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_03]: I think it was maybe the next year in Atlanta.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_03]: And you stood there for a very long time, it felt like about five minutes, just kind of reminded me of like, when a team loses a Super Bowl and they just look at the team celebrating and they're just, they're like, thinking like, this will not happen.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_00]: Is this MLP?
- 5:35[SPEAKER_00]: No, it was Atlanta, PPA had just lost a J-Dub in the semis.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_00]: And that was that tournament.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_00]: That was after beating Ben in the game.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_00]: That was the same tournament.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_00]: Like, Ben and the quarters, big win.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_03]: twelve ten in the third it was a battle like I had I was up in the third I lost it and you know I just I just stood there and I just was was thinking like what what happened it got clipped hard me and clipped it we clipped it and it was one of those moments where like as you know running the kitchen I don't always know how if we post something how it might affect a player and we talked about before you came on like you're like hey if I do something on the court
- 6:18[SPEAKER_03]: Um, and I appreciate that because because there are moments, you know, where I get in a room with someone like, man, this guy might just hate me.
- 6:25[SPEAKER_03]: So I appreciate that you maybe don't, so that's cool.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_02]: It's a tough position too, because I'll get on Jared sometimes just because we have this podcast now.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, dude, like, you gotta be like careful about what you post.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_02]: But he's like, we're media company, like we, we have for report pickleball.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_02]: Everyone's mostly, you know.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_03]: And yeah, and like we're champions of the game, you know, I've dedicated our life to this.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_03]: And so it's if someone does something that we think is great, we're gonna shine a light on if we've someone does something we think is not as great.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_03]: We'll potentially shine a light on it.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_02]: So it's like that guy who made a few bad call, it's like, you know, you got to like, plus it.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_03]: He was more than a few bad calls, but yeah, yeah.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_02]: We'll do, thanks for being here.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_02]: I know you, like I said, we weren't like friends back then, and it's not like we weren't friends.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_02]: We just like, we had our circles and whatever, he was Florida, I was LA, but we played each other and saw each other at these national tournaments.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_02]: I want to know a little bit more about your background.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_02]: You grew up in Florida.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_02]: I know you have amazing parents, you have brothers, maybe even a sister, and it kind of take me back to young Christian, how you got into tennis and just what life is like.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we did know each other just to say that and I remember you were always very nice to me not you were you were better than me when we were like younger I you were really good.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_00]: So this guy's a great tennis player don't don't let anyone in the world go grown up.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he was good times Yeah, and I remember you were very nice, you know a lot of a lot of really top people can be less nice So I always appreciated that as far as my childhood and
- 8:01[SPEAKER_00]: stuff like that.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_00]: I the way I got into tennis was actually my older brother went to my mom and he was like hey can you like can you put me in a tennis lesson can you like can you make me can you can you let me play tennis she was like sure so she was like hey take your younger brother with you
- 8:18[SPEAKER_00]: So I went with him and I was just kind of, it kind of just came very natural, just sometimes like the movement, the swinging, it came, definitely came natural.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_00]: And he kept playing tennis, I kept playing tennis.
- 8:32[SPEAKER_00]: We played for a few years.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_00]: And then after a few years, I started like beating him or being a little better than him.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, how much orders is it?
- 8:40[SPEAKER_00]: Sorry, Tyler.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_00]: He is four years older than me.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_03]: And he comes to the tournaments, right?
- 8:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, I'm 25, he's 29.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so I, and that's a big, that's a big difference when you're that young, because I started at, I was seven at the time, you know, he's 11.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_00]: So like, when I'm like nine, 10, and he's like 14, like, that's a big gap in like development, like four kids.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_00]: So that was, that was tough.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_03]: That was embarrassing for him to lose.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I don't know.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to speak for him, but he did end up quitting tennis.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_00]: Not sure.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_03]: You literally kicked him out of tennis.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_00]: I feel I felt bad.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but he's really nice.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_00]: He's living in Dallas right now.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_00]: He's a mechanical engineer.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_00]: Really proud of him.
- 9:22[SPEAKER_00]: Super smart.
- 9:23[SPEAKER_00]: One of the smartest guys I know.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_00]: One of the hardest workers I know always looked up to him as far as like how hard he works.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_00]: And I think I get a little bit of that as far as like,
- 9:35[SPEAKER_00]: It was some of where my effort and work ethic comes in is definitely from from him.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_00]: So love you Ty.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_00]: And then I also have a younger brother, Tim, his name's Timmy.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_00]: And then an older sister, page, she's a dentist.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_00]: I actually have an appointment with her later today.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_03]: It's a sheet just to charge you.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_03]: No, no, she's a great, great, you know, sibling that.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_00]: I saw her like a month ago.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_00]: She just started working and now I have like one cavity that I got to get filled with stuff.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_03]: So she's like not that good.
- 10:07[SPEAKER_00]: No, she, well, she's going to fill the cavity.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll see how that she is.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_01]: This is Pickleballer's delivered by DoorDash.
- 10:14[SPEAKER_01]: We are giving away $10, $100 gift cards to 10 people who comment their favorite part of this podcast below.
- 10:22[SPEAKER_02]: That's actually pretty cool to have people in the medical field in your friend.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_02]: 100%.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, there's so many issues.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_03]: It's like, yeah, it's like one of those things that you just take for granted.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_02]: So you have a sister's dentist, a brother who's a mechanical engineer.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_02]: It's pretty impressive.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_02]: Like it seems like your whole family excels in their crafts.
- 10:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, my dad is a doctor.
- 10:42[SPEAKER_00]: He's a psychiatrist, which is, uh, again, and then, you know, my mom stay at home.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_00]: Um, one of the best stay at the best day at Mom.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, best stay at home.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_02]: We this lady ever shout out Nina all.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_02]: She and I remember just from like junior tennis and like just some seeing her on the road.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_02]: Um, at your tournament, it's like always says hi to me.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_02]: Always brings up like great memories from when we were kids.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_02]: So, um, yeah, your mom is super cool and you have a great family.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I know your mom too.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_00]: She's very nice and same to you.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_00]: But to me, my mom's the best mom in the world.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_00]: She's awesome.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_00]: She stayed at home.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_00]: She took care of all the kids.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_00]: And I feel like that's just now so valuable.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_00]: Like the way I was raised, it's like me.
- 11:23[SPEAKER_00]: My siblings being close with my siblings.
- 11:26[SPEAKER_00]: And having my mom home, that was huge.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_00]: That's what I want in my life and my future is I want to give my future wife
- 11:35[SPEAKER_00]: option to not work and stay home with the kids.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_00]: I think a lot of mothers want to stay home with their kids.
- 11:41[SPEAKER_00]: So if I'm able to do that, that's kind of just a goal that I've had my entire life.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_00]: And that's something that helps me work really hard is to...
- 11:51[SPEAKER_00]: give my kids the opportunity to give my kids and future kids and future wife the opportunity to stay home with with the family.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_02]: So you're saying that's a little bit of like motivation for you.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_02]: You grind now to provide for these people in the future.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's pretty, I mean, that's pretty evolved for 25 year olds.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so when I was 25, I was like, I'm going to
- 12:18[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I've had this way of thinking since I was like 15 because I've always been I've always been super appreciative and like I've always felt very blessed for the family I've had and my goal has always been to just like be able to do what my dad did for me.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_00]: Like that's that's really like what you know is why I do a lot of what I do.
- 12:36[SPEAKER_02]: And so you're a big family man.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, I mean, hung out with my brother yesterday.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_00]: I love, I love hanging out with my family when I can.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_03]: And so your brother, quits tennis, you older brother.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_03]: You become like a tennis stud and then you go to Virginia to play tennis.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_03]: But you weren't there that long.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_03]: No.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_03]: So tell us about that journey from
- 13:01[SPEAKER_03]: family tennis college.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_00]: So I committed to UVA, uh, I think when I was 17, which was one of the best tennis schools.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_02]: If I'm not mistaken, like UVA was was always really good at tennis.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_02]: So it was very hard to even get on that team in the first place.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_02]: I just want to add that there.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think they won the NCAA Championship like three out of four years right when I committed like you get a full ride there So they actually don't give full rides because when it comes to tennis college tennis crazy they have what like four and a half Yeah, scholarships it with for like 10 to 12 guys.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you need like eight you need like eight people because you need the six six starters and then you need like one or two people that are just going to possibly be
- 13:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you need like that.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_00]: Many guys, but you need like a really solid eight, eight, nine amount of players just to build the team so I went there and committed right after I won one of the best tournaments.
- 14:03[SPEAKER_00]: I won in my junior career, which was winner nats.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, all right, like while I'm on this high, we should we should commit just be safe.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_00]: Committed and then there's this feeling after you commit, which I hate to admit, but it's kind of just like a relax feeling and I think every college tennis player knows it you commit and you just you just relax and you're like, okay, I don't need to work as hard.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_00]: I don't need to do all of this.
- 14:26[SPEAKER_00]: And I definitely took that and, you know, I regret it.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I think I kind of relax.
- 14:30[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I still train, but I played mostly for fun, rather than to be the best player I could be.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_03]: You're like, I've made it.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I was like, I was like, all right, I have a year and then we'll, and then I go to college and then, you know, they'll make me a protest player.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_00]: Like, that was like, like, I can, I can chill.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_02]: And you're also thinking about a lot of stuff, you know, you're going to do as a freshman.
- 14:48[SPEAKER_02]: Like, all right, like, I'm going to like, what's school going to be like, you know, am I going to, you know, go to parties and am I going to have a ton of friends?
- 14:54[SPEAKER_02]: Am I going to, you know, be popular in school?
- 14:56[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I think your focus shifts a little bit to that, too.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_02]: Like, that's how it was for me.
- 15:01[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I was like, oh, wow, I'm like a freshman in college.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_02]: And I did that.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_02]: homes.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, exactly.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_00]: And I mean, there's there's three things, you know, you've got academics, you've got social life and then you've got your sport like when you go to if you're if you're not working luckily I was I didn't have to work and the way Virginia wanted it was.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_00]: Sports academics social life they might have said academics like but above sports But that but I always felt like it was sports academic social life and for me like like you said like I was homeschooled I never really had much of a social life so I was like well, I kind of want you know All these things to be pretty equal in my life.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_00]: You know academics number one at the time I was like you know Titus I can't control what's gonna happen
- 15:45[SPEAKER_00]: probably not true, but tennis, I can't control what's going to happen.
- 15:48[SPEAKER_00]: So let me just be the best I can in academics and have that safety net of like, whoever happens with tennis is I can get a good job.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_03]: And what, what, what did, what did you want to do?
- 15:58[SPEAKER_03]: Do you have any, I feel like you you like new new this stuff at 17.
- 16:01[SPEAKER_00]: So in Virginia, I wanted to go into finance.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't really know exactly what I wanted to do, but you, there was a finance major and that was my intended major.
- 16:14[SPEAKER_00]: So finance, you know, like we were just talking about with trying to support a family, like the way my family was able to support me.
- 16:24[SPEAKER_00]: So like, I knew I needed something that was gonna make money.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_00]: You wanted that cash, love it.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I wanted that cash.
- 16:32[SPEAKER_00]: And I was only at UVA for one year.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_00]: I, you know, I prioritized academics and social life about the same as tennis, like I was winning all my matches.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_00]: Let me just, let me put this.
- 16:43[SPEAKER_00]: So I didn't lose that six.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_00]: And it's starting, I was, I was very proud to start.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't lose that six.
- 16:50[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't win at five.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_00]: They moved me to five a couple times that lost, but so in my mind, I was like, oh, I'm winning my matches.
- 16:55[SPEAKER_00]: I'm doing what I need to do, like I'm like, I'm chilling in this area.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_00]: Like I can like focus on having fun and academics and not really worry about my spot on the team.
- 17:06[SPEAKER_00]: And then I, the coach saw that and they didn't really.
- 17:09[SPEAKER_00]: love that and they kind of saw that my top priority wasn't tennis So just it wasn't good fit ended up leaving there after my first year to go to University of Chicago where in my mind I was like well, this is a school where I can really focus on academics because I didn't know
- 17:26[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't, you know, I didn't have a faith in my, my tennis, especially I think a lot of people go through this moment where they're a top junior tennis player like you were you go to college and then you're putting a pool with guys four or five years older than you who are playing in that earlier line up and so you're playing like five, six and you're not as important as those guys and tennis starts to become, you know, not the most important thing of the world.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 17:52[SPEAKER_02]: So I think it's it's very natural that that happened.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_03]: where you mix it up and college a little bit where you get out of their party and have fun.
- 17:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, for sure.
- 17:58[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, as a freshman, 18, 19 year old freshman, like you want to go out there.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_00]: You want to like go to parties that you've never been.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_00]: You want to have this type of independence you've never had, like always living at home and now you're, you know, you're living by yourself.
- 18:11[SPEAKER_00]: Like that's a really big thing for a person is to go live by themselves.
- 18:16[SPEAKER_00]: You don't have, you don't have somebody watching over you, like telling you exactly what to do when to do it.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_00]: You kind of have to
- 18:22[SPEAKER_00]: you have to create your own discipline, you have to create your own schedule and you're the one that's kind of going to be on top of your life.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_03]: It's a pretty amazing time as a kid when you leave the house and you're like, wow, like I can do whatever I want, I can go in just crazy.
- 18:38[SPEAKER_02]: It's sometimes almost too much.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_02]: I feel like after my freshman year of college I hit this like period where I like had to like
- 18:47[SPEAKER_02]: I just completely did it 360 on my life.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_02]: I was a guy who my only goal in life is to become a pro tennis player.
- 18:55[SPEAKER_02]: I was homeschooled for that reason.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_02]: All my friends were tennis friends.
- 18:59[SPEAKER_02]: And now I'm in this place where I'm on my own.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_02]: I'm, you know, have all the freedom in the world.
- 19:04[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, tennis is still there.
- 19:05[SPEAKER_02]: But like there's this whole new world out there.
- 19:07[SPEAKER_02]: And so you do like, you know, that for a year.
- 19:10[SPEAKER_02]: And you're like, wait, what just happened?
- 19:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it changes your perspective on just life is once you go out into the real world.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_00]: And that's not even the real world.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_00]: That's the craziest part.
- 19:21[SPEAKER_00]: Is it go to college and you're still in a bubble?
- 19:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so yeah.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_03]: And then you get out of college and then there's another world that you're like, oh wait, I have to like pay my own bills that like work.
- 19:30[SPEAKER_02]: If you're wondering what this hat is that I'm always wearing, it's a pickle baller hat.
- 19:34[SPEAKER_02]: And guess what, you can get your own two.
- 19:36[SPEAKER_02]: Click the link down below to get access to the limited drop for this pickle baller hat.
- 19:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, go to Chicago and I focus on academics a lot more, but I still play tennis and they're like a great run there, right?
- 19:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so my first, my first year at Chicago got canceled due to COVID.
- 19:54[SPEAKER_00]: So I, so I was just there kind of like not really competing.
- 19:58[SPEAKER_00]: We couldn't, I remember they made us, oh my gosh.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_00]: They made us train because it's, it's really cold in Chicago.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_00]: So they have indoor courts.
- 20:05[SPEAKER_00]: They made us train while wearing a mask.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_00]: It's tough.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_00]: Imagine playing tennis wearing a mask, like it was so hard to do that.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_00]: So hard to breathe in general, so that was good.
- 20:14[SPEAKER_02]: It probably wasn't even like the little blue mask.
- 20:16[SPEAKER_02]: It was probably like that.
- 20:17[SPEAKER_00]: It's like that.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 20:19[SPEAKER_02]: Really really really.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_02]: I remember we had to do that too.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_03]: And 95.
- 20:23[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 20:23[SPEAKER_02]: Playing tennis.
- 20:25[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 20:27[SPEAKER_03]: You're gonna go like an alien playing tennis.
- 20:29[SPEAKER_02]: It's like, it like filters the air.
- 20:30[SPEAKER_03]: There's like two things.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 20:32[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, that didn't really help with my like desire to want to be a pro tennis player or like to be a pro athlete was like kind of the pro tennis was kind of like getting put to the side with COVID.
- 20:45[SPEAKER_00]: So what I really did was I just double down on school and academics.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_00]: And just for like a year or two, while COVID was going on, Chicago was a very liberal school, so you have your mask below your nose, like people are freaking out, and you're outside, and they're freaking out.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_00]: And I come from Florida.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, where it's like, where it really is, like, you don't need a mask.
- 21:07[SPEAKER_03]: That's awesome after a month, people are like partying.
- 21:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's awesome.
- 21:11[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_00]: So for like a year or two, just really focused on academics and then I realized after I spent two years just all day every day for the most part, focusing on school was that like that sucks like that really sucks to just be to wake up, be on a computer for eight hours.
- 21:28[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know that was like, and I can't I can't really do that much school, but
- 21:34[SPEAKER_00]: Fair enough.
- 21:35[SPEAKER_00]: But it's not fun.
- 21:36[SPEAKER_00]: It's like it's not fun.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I remember the highlight of my day every day was going to the gym.
- 21:40[SPEAKER_00]: It was always the highlight of my day.
- 21:41[SPEAKER_02]: Dude, you.
- 21:42[SPEAKER_02]: We talked in college.
- 21:44[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if you remember this.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_02]: It was like the first time we had talked in like years.
- 21:49[SPEAKER_02]: He posted a picture pre-pickable pre-pickable.
- 21:51[SPEAKER_02]: And I responded and I was like, I remember saying like,
- 21:55[SPEAKER_02]: Bro, how are you getting like, like, it's on the sounds where it's like, how are you getting so shredded?
- 21:59[SPEAKER_02]: And he was like, he was like a freaking body builder in college.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_02]: I actually do remember that.
- 22:04[SPEAKER_02]: I was like, yo, what is going on?
- 22:05[SPEAKER_02]: Because like, I remember like scrawny little junior tennis crochet in the crash in the crease.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_00]: Creepy cowboy.
- 22:11[SPEAKER_02]: It's very crazy cowboy.
- 22:13[SPEAKER_00]: I, I, I, I'm eager to remember that too.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_00]: We'll have to check the DMs.
- 22:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 22:18[SPEAKER_00]: But it was crazy because I just I just worked out a lot because I I love competing.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_00]: I love working out.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_00]: I just love the exercises.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_00]: I mean
- 22:28[SPEAKER_00]: and all athletes can understand.
- 22:31[SPEAKER_00]: And what's funny is that was like a terrible body for tennis.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_00]: Like it's like, I'm like out here like trying to put on a ton of muscle and then I go out and play tennis.
- 22:39[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm like, just dying, I have no stamina.
- 22:43[SPEAKER_00]: So after the two years, we finally get to play tennis or after the year, we get to play my junior year of tennis.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_00]: And I've really sold year.
- 22:53[SPEAKER_00]: Then you go 18 and I know I did go 18 and I know so I mean that's crazy to like like I don't Did you think you were gonna be like undefeated or we know no shot I actually my coach put me in for the first like two matches in position two Just just because and then I won them both like one in one one in one He's like you're never one.
- 23:13[SPEAKER_00]: He's like you go go to number one and then I just continue to win every every single match I was just playing well
- 23:21[SPEAKER_03]: And you're jacked, I was, I actually remember our first interview.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_03]: You were like pretty, I mean, you're still in great shape, but you weren't you bigger than?
- 23:28[SPEAKER_00]: I was, I was definitely bigger.
- 23:30[SPEAKER_00]: I got very long hair.
- 23:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I had longer hair.
- 23:32[SPEAKER_03]: Did you have a nickname to name a vocalist Sunshine?
- 23:34[SPEAKER_03]: No, from that, from remember the Titans, the quarterbacks?
- 23:38[SPEAKER_00]: You said that during that.
- 23:40[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you kind of look like him.
- 23:41[SPEAKER_03]: It looked like the long blonde hair.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_03]: It's like a calm sunshine.
- 23:44[SPEAKER_00]: So people would call me like Shapo a couple of times like Pablo back then.
- 23:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I don't like that one.
- 23:49[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 23:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I know.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_00]: 10 is player.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_03]: So you're, you're 18, you know, you moved to number one.
- 23:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and then I mean, let's finish the origin story of how I started playing pickle ball is I.
- 24:02[SPEAKER_03]: But you want a national championship.
- 24:03[SPEAKER_00]: We won the national championship.
- 24:05[SPEAKER_00]: In ship, crazy.
- 24:06[SPEAKER_00]: I clinched the match in the semis, three, three.
- 24:10[SPEAKER_00]: I'm absent, I'm cramping like we're going, I don't even think we, you know, we did split.
- 24:17[SPEAKER_00]: So I went one in the third set, cramping, I've got my coaches' and coach run it out, like handing me water in between points, like I pushed myself so hard in that match.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_00]: One of the worst pains I've ever experienced while competing.
- 24:33[SPEAKER_00]: And the thing is, you know, you win that, there's a crazy photo of me shouting, come on and like the whole thing.
- 24:40[SPEAKER_03]: Do you have it?
- 24:40[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, do you have it?
- 24:41[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's just popping up there.
- 24:43[SPEAKER_00]: It's one of my favorite photos of all time.
- 24:45[SPEAKER_00]: So that was a peak moment.
- 24:48[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, how does it get better than this?
- 24:50[SPEAKER_00]: I remember looking at myself after we finished I'm in the bathroom, going to bed, I'm staring at myself.
- 24:57[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, that was crazy.
- 24:59[SPEAKER_00]: What just happened?
- 25:00[SPEAKER_00]: We just won a national title.
- 25:01[SPEAKER_00]: That's what we've been spending all year trying to do.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, life.
- 25:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, for sure.
- 25:06[SPEAKER_00]: And I mean, D3 school, so I mean, very enough.
- 25:09[SPEAKER_00]: But still though.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's very impressive to go 18 and a no.
- 25:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so that was crazy and then my coach asks me that night very funny my coach asks me that night We're like in the room just like a few of the players coach assistant coach chill and like celebrating the win And he's like what do you want to do is like what do you want to do act like after like after college?
- 25:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, and I'm like and I told him I was like he's like I was like I think I think I want to go pro and pickleball
- 25:39[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, I think you skip like seven steps in exactly exactly.
- 25:46[SPEAKER_00]: So the reason I said that is because over the year I had played pickle ball like two or three times just casually with little inflow in Florida.
- 25:56[SPEAKER_00]: Like I had when we met with I during winter break of that year.
- 26:03[SPEAKER_00]: So there's a one week period.
- 26:04[SPEAKER_00]: I played pickle ball with James and that which James and that which is like currently like
- 26:09[SPEAKER_00]: eight months in the pickleball, breaking into the top 10, like top, like beating everybody and beating like Zayn Navratil who was like one in APP in singles, like having the best crazy wins.
- 26:19[SPEAKER_00]: Over winter break, I knew what pickleball was.
- 26:21[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, this is a cool sport, I'm intrigued.
- 26:24[SPEAKER_00]: So I play pickleball with him, we play singles, and it's like, I'm like, oh, I'm there.
- 26:29[SPEAKER_00]: Like I had it, like I had it in my head.
- 26:31[SPEAKER_00]: No, you're just like, I'm way better in games.
- 26:37[SPEAKER_03]: but he had been like training.
- 26:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he had been training at that.
- 26:39[SPEAKER_00]: And I had just like, I had played with my family.
- 26:42[SPEAKER_03]: Would he a test of this?
- 26:44[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 26:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's good.
- 26:46[SPEAKER_00]: I have the full video of our match from like, I recorded the match.
- 26:50[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I remember there was like a little beef between you guys at the beginning.
- 26:52[SPEAKER_02]: See, I don't know, it was like real, but.
- 26:54[SPEAKER_02]: I was like, oh yeah, some like Twitter stuff, right?
- 26:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, there was a little bit of friendly beef.
- 27:00[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I'll actually just say it because it's funny and now it's a it's a little bit past but he text so this is now like a few months after I started playing pickable he text me and we're like already like not friends like never been friends but you guys just had played the Yeah, we just played together.
- 27:14[SPEAKER_00]: I knew it was playing I was like hey, like do you want to do you need somebody to train with but we were never friends in tennis we weren't friends at this moment where you like we weren't enemies, but we were like we just knew each other kind of like
- 27:26[SPEAKER_02]: James I feel like is a little bit of like a he likes, you know, being in like a little bit of the trouble making scene right like so I could I could see him like trying to like you guys are like both pretty polarizing
- 27:36[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, so he he he text me and he's like he's like yo He's like cuz we had like a little bit of beef, but it was like wasn't really it wasn't like real And like we were both like like, you know light-hearted beef.
- 27:46[SPEAKER_00]: He text me like bro He's like he's like we should have like a WWE style like Beef like a like tall.
- 27:52[SPEAKER_03]: I knew it was scripted.
- 27:53[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so he's like oh, I know I really did I was like cuz okay Go on
- 27:59[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, no, he said that and I'm like, well, I'm like, we don't have to, I'm like, I don't have to fake it.
- 28:03[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know about you.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_03]: I don't like it.
- 28:07[SPEAKER_00]: But I was like, yeah, I was like yeah, we're like we can do that.
- 28:10[SPEAKER_00]: We can like kind of like take it to the next one.
- 28:12[SPEAKER_02]: James is always scheming man.
- 28:13[SPEAKER_02]: This guy is always scheming.
- 28:15[SPEAKER_03]: So I'll say like I think, you know, I remember that first interview with Jason.
- 28:19[SPEAKER_03]: In Jason, we like he texted me.
- 28:22[SPEAKER_03]: We'd be he'd be watching tournaments.
- 28:24[SPEAKER_03]: He'd go to the if you see this Christian all shank in and I was like whatever, like he's just like a flash in the pan and then you came on and
- 28:32[SPEAKER_03]: and like tweeter king your vibe, like you were marketing, I think you had like a brand in mind.
- 28:40[SPEAKER_03]: Is that accurate?
- 28:41[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_03]: And then you started doing your wall drills with sure, you know, no shirt on.
- 28:46[SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
- 28:47[SPEAKER_00]: The third drop, too.
- 28:48[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 28:48[SPEAKER_03]: Like so you had a plan and it was out of third strap.
- 28:51[SPEAKER_03]: Like was that for, like, course.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I mean, every you know, he's like yeah, he's chatting balls against the wall.
- 28:58[SPEAKER_00]: He probably put oil over his body, but like in my mind, I wasn't posting this like, oh, I'm gonna post a thirst trap.
- 29:04[SPEAKER_00]: But he's like dude.
- 29:05[SPEAKER_03]: He's like, I'm gonna have every fifth year old woman loving.
- 29:07[SPEAKER_03]: He's like, you know, looking back, I mean, if he was hitting on a wall with that, 100%.
- 29:11[SPEAKER_00]: Looking back, if you post a video of yourself shirt, yeah, anything like that.
- 29:14[SPEAKER_03]: And he took some smack for it.
- 29:16[SPEAKER_03]: Like people were like, dude, put on a shirt and he just kept
- 29:22[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the plan was to just put out content because there weren't a lot of pickleball players.
- 29:27[SPEAKER_03]: But to be able to brand, to be this thing that kind of was lacking in the sport quite honestly.
- 29:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, exactly.
- 29:33[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean, there weren't a lot of established players that were like super popular online.
- 29:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and there's still a new rising sport.
- 29:40[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, still is.
- 29:42[SPEAKER_00]: But definitely was three years ago.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_00]: And I felt like it was kind of like,
- 29:46[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to say easy, but like, easy-ish and smart.
- 29:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and smart to like build a brand.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, and that's- You were still being you, which I like.
- 29:54[SPEAKER_02]: You were just like digging into more of- I don't know.
- 29:57[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.
- 29:58[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if it was being you, because now that I get to sit down with you, and I think you've matured a lot over the past few years, so maybe now it's you, but you don't seem- I don't know.
- 30:09[SPEAKER_03]: I feel like you're different guy than that first interview.
- 30:11[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, yeah, I mean, I think- I think-
- 30:16[SPEAKER_00]: Being a little like cocky slash confidence like was a part of me and I think I just really like doubled down on that part of me and I don't think that's like the biggest part of me is the cock cocky where you may be humbled.
- 30:31[SPEAKER_03]: when just throughout the pickleball journey.
- 30:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, it took me two years to win a single title.
- 30:37[SPEAKER_00]: I thought I was going to win a single title within months.
- 30:41[SPEAKER_02]: And you were stoked, I remember that.
- 30:42[SPEAKER_00]: That was the case.
- 30:43[SPEAKER_02]: Well, we played that tournament, too.
- 30:44[SPEAKER_02]: And I remember it was King Coral.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_02]: Chris is playing really well.
- 30:46[SPEAKER_00]: I did, yeah.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_02]: That was the first, the first one.
- 30:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 30:49[SPEAKER_02]: I was stoked, I remember.
- 30:50[SPEAKER_02]: I was huge, huge, huge beat in the finals.
- 30:52[SPEAKER_00]: I'd be, uh, jameh actually.
- 30:55[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 30:55[SPEAKER_00]: And I was down in the third, uh, and he lost the first.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I lost the first, uh, that was, that was, that was a big one.
- 31:04[SPEAKER_03]: And was your doubles game there at the time?
- 31:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, okay.
- 31:08[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, it kind of, it kind of doubles better than my singles at the time.
- 31:12[SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
- 31:12[SPEAKER_03]: So your journey, you weren't just like the singles guy.
- 31:15[SPEAKER_02]: I'm trying to think at first you were though, but I feel like you put in a ton of work.
- 31:20[SPEAKER_02]: You worked with like Lee, you worked with a lot of people in Boca, and you kind of beat, I feel like like a lot of singles players do.
- 31:26[SPEAKER_02]: They start out in singles.
- 31:28[SPEAKER_02]: Then they start focusing hard in doubles.
- 31:29[SPEAKER_02]: You're probably not even practicing singles.
- 31:31[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 31:31[SPEAKER_02]: But then you've had like you got injured.
- 31:34[SPEAKER_02]: and I love how I'm just telling as far as this is how I see it and then you got injured and you had like this resurgence of weight in singles and you've just been dominating and uh yeah I think that leads me to my next question is like you found pickleball you kind of started off hot you know doing well obviously your talented kid but
- 31:51[SPEAKER_02]: What I don't remember from when you were younger was you having this discipline and this dedication, I remember you were a little bit of a hothead in your kid, but in like a good way, you know, but it, you know, but you were funny and goofy and it wasn't like, all right, Christians like the most dedicated like hardworking guy.
- 32:07[SPEAKER_02]: Of course, you're 12, like I mean, 13, you shouldn't be.
- 32:10[UNKNOWN]: Yeah.
- 32:10[SPEAKER_02]: But I feel like you take this sport so seriously, you work really hard and it's clear like people say if I play Christian and practice Christian and Andre like they want to win so bad how do you get from just starting to play pickleball and really committing to this to where you are now what did that look like what was your training like what was your mindset like.
- 32:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, uh, to start, I mean, great question to start back in tennis.
- 32:36[SPEAKER_00]: I remember I would get very upset.
- 32:38[SPEAKER_00]: I was very emotional and it was funny because I felt like what I always try to do was like make a joke out of it or like I would like I would complain a lot, but I would try to complain so that like if somebody heard me complaining, they would laugh.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't know why I did that, but I was like, oh, man, like, I can't hit this ball right now.
- 32:54[SPEAKER_00]: Or like, oh, I'm like, like, I have no back yet.
- 32:57[SPEAKER_00]: I've never had a back end.
- 32:58[SPEAKER_00]: Or like, I would say stuff to myself.
- 32:59[SPEAKER_02]: He was like the rare guys that have a one-handed back end in junior tennis.
- 33:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so I think it was bad habit, but I would say it.
- 33:06[SPEAKER_00]: Very, very negative, super negative talk.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_00]: When I was a kid, I think a lot of us were like that.
- 33:11[SPEAKER_00]: And, uh,
- 33:14[SPEAKER_00]: Once I, you know, once I, I think it's just how to do with age, I really, I really do once I started playing pickle ball.
- 33:19[SPEAKER_00]: I was much older.
- 33:21[SPEAKER_00]: I was much more mature.
- 33:22[SPEAKER_00]: I knew that if it's playing in simple.
- 33:26[SPEAKER_00]: I knew if I were to harder than other people that I would get better than other people had the situation like like that was like that was it.
- 33:37[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you know, I have
- 33:38[SPEAKER_00]: I have some definitely have some talent and I mean if you mix talent and hard work, you know, that's success.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_03]: And if you just grind and determination, if you say, I'm going to do it, it happens.
- 33:50[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, it's so true.
- 33:51[SPEAKER_02]: But you, I would say, took that a step further than other people.
- 33:55[SPEAKER_02]: I watch you lose in the finals of Red Rock mixed albums this year, you weren't very happy, but right after the match, you're still going and it's almost pitch black outside everyone's left the site and you're out there stretching.
- 34:07[SPEAKER_02]: You're still working.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_02]: It's kind of like this guy's here for the long run.
- 34:13[SPEAKER_02]: This guy's like when a lose focusing on the process is hard work.
- 34:18[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's really cool.
- 34:20[SPEAKER_02]: What's like a day in the life at home, I guess, when, or I guess the last few years training, what did that look like?
- 34:29[SPEAKER_02]: What's like, are you waking up?
- 34:30[SPEAKER_02]: And it's just, all right, how do I get better at pickable?
- 34:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, I tried to, I tried to plan my week out.
- 34:38[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's the most important thing.
- 34:40[SPEAKER_00]: Jordan Peterson talks about this.
- 34:41[SPEAKER_00]: He's like, he's like, look at your calendar.
- 34:43[SPEAKER_03]: He's like, wow, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, Street.
- 34:45[SPEAKER_00]: That's Jordan Bellevue.
- 34:46[SPEAKER_03]: No, yeah, Jordan Peterson, 12, 12, habits of pilot successful people.
- 34:51[SPEAKER_00]: No, it's like maps of meaning, 12, 12 rules.
- 34:54[SPEAKER_00]: 12 rules, yeah, I'm not going to talk.
- 34:57[SPEAKER_00]: Biblical guy, but like, isn't a Christian very, very complicated.
- 35:02[SPEAKER_00]: He talks about this.
- 35:03[SPEAKER_00]: He's like, look at your calendar.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_00]: He's like, that will show you how bad you want to be successful.
- 35:09[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like, I mean, anybody who's successful can understand that.
- 35:14[SPEAKER_00]: If you look at your calendar and it doesn't need to be an actual calendar, I keep a lot of it just in my head.
- 35:19[SPEAKER_00]: I just know what I need to do every day of the week.
- 35:23[SPEAKER_00]: I have kept calendars in the past, but if you have a calendar and every day is full, that shows you want to be successful, that shows you're doing what it takes to be successful.
- 35:35[SPEAKER_00]: If you look at your calendar and it's like, oh, you've got like five-hour period off here four-hour period off here this whole day I don't know we'll wake up and see what we want to do like that you know that that just
- 35:48[SPEAKER_00]: That's the most important thing, you know, if I can tell like kids or just anybody who wants to like be better, that that's what it is, is to plan your day and to like know what you're going to do like be doing stuff.
- 35:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I know what I'm doing.
- 36:00[SPEAKER_00]: I knew the start of the week right after I finished the tournament, I take like the next day, I figure out what am I doing tomorrow.
- 36:06[SPEAKER_00]: What am I doing today that day?
- 36:07[SPEAKER_00]: All right, I can rest.
- 36:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but tomorrow.
- 36:09[SPEAKER_00]: What am I doing the next day?
- 36:11[SPEAKER_03]: I know what you mean, you're just super disciplined.
- 36:12[SPEAKER_00]: I, I just, it's not, I mean, yeah, it's disciplined.
- 36:15[SPEAKER_03]: You're creating order, it's disciplined.
- 36:17[SPEAKER_03]: It's disciplined.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_03]: It's foresight, it's having a plan and going after it and getting it done.
- 36:25[SPEAKER_03]: It's like that's,
- 36:27[SPEAKER_00]: I think there's a really good way to put it is it's not it's not easy but it's not complicated like it's super simple but it's super hard it's totally right and I think that's true about success in general business in general we're like.
- 36:42[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I've had friends who were like, hey, you know, I see what you're doing to the kitchen.
- 36:46[SPEAKER_03]: Like, I want to do my own thing and I'm like, just start doing it.
- 36:49[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 36:49[SPEAKER_03]: I'm like, and they're like, well, I want to create a whole brand.
- 36:51[SPEAKER_03]: I'm like, no, just start doing it.
- 36:53[SPEAKER_03]: Abitast, see what works, see what doesn't work, and just keep doing it.
- 36:56[SPEAKER_03]: Keep doing it, keep doing it, keep doing it, until you hit a viral video.
- 37:00[SPEAKER_03]: Keep doing it, keep doing it.
- 37:01[SPEAKER_03]: And it's like, it's the same with anything.
- 37:03[SPEAKER_02]: So it's like when we started the bottom, do you remember how hectic this first few weeks we were of like, us trying to figure out how it was.
- 37:08[SPEAKER_03]: It's still, it's still hectic at times, but like, you know, like
- 37:12[SPEAKER_03]: I feel like inactivity is the killer of like hopes and dreams, a hundred percent.
- 37:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 37:19[SPEAKER_00]: Amen.
- 37:19[SPEAKER_03]: But I mean, dude, so you're like, you're a beast.
- 37:21[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, you are discipline.
- 37:22[SPEAKER_03]: You are driven.
- 37:24[SPEAKER_03]: You have goals.
- 37:26[SPEAKER_03]: You know you want to be the best.
- 37:27[SPEAKER_03]: You believe you can be the best.
- 37:29[SPEAKER_03]: So when you lose a match and you're standing there and or you you snap the powder right over the knee.
- 37:36[SPEAKER_03]: Haven't done that a while, but yeah.
- 37:37[SPEAKER_03]: do you just see red or what is it is are you just like so mad at yourself what what is that emotion that makes you stand out from other players who they get off the court and they go and they they're probably pissed you know see Roscoe after he lose a match and I like try to talk to you like he just doesn't even talk he's like walks away to where from man we're like we're like that what do you see like what do you what what do you feel
- 37:59[SPEAKER_00]: So I feel like that's something that I've been trying to work on a lot is in, let's say, before six months ago, before a year ago, I would lose a match and it would be like, just like a knife in the heart.
- 38:12[SPEAKER_00]: It would be like the worst possible imaginable thing that could happen to me just happened.
- 38:18[SPEAKER_00]: And like that's how I would kind of take it.
- 38:20[SPEAKER_03]: Is it embarrassment?
- 38:21[SPEAKER_03]: Is it like I can't believe I just lost in front of all these people?
- 38:24[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, sure, you know, you go to it.
- 38:25[SPEAKER_00]: If you go to the site, after making it to the finals, back when we had like Thursday, singles Friday, like you go there and you're in a finals, you walk there, you feel good, you know?
- 38:35[SPEAKER_00]: Like everybody looks at you.
- 38:36[SPEAKER_00]: Like they know you're in the finals.
- 38:37[SPEAKER_00]: You know you're the guy.
- 38:38[SPEAKER_02]: It's like a missed opportunity.
- 38:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, exactly.
- 38:40[SPEAKER_02]: It's like, wow, I could have won this match.
- 38:43[SPEAKER_02]: I could have done better and I didn't and now someone else is gonna do that.
- 38:46[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but I will say, I think Jared's asking that because you take it to another level where you really show it.
- 38:52[SPEAKER_02]: You really like, you know, there's been the camera on you where you, you know, you got tears in your eyes after a match or you're sitting there with your head down.
- 38:59[SPEAKER_02]: I remember Denver when you lost a bend in the finals, you know, definitely pick a ball TV, your tennis channel got you with a close-up.
- 39:09[SPEAKER_00]: That's like two years ago now.
- 39:10[SPEAKER_03]: Is there any part that that's like a show?
- 39:12[SPEAKER_00]: No, I mean.
- 39:13[SPEAKER_03]: So it's like you most authentic moment.
- 39:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, I think one of the bigger things is I wasn't really thinking about when I lose I'm not really thinking about the way I'm viewed and as you know what I like that I respect that well in the past like I'm trying to change it because now if I lose a match you know I'd like to break a few paddles I'd like to like get really upset but I think the difference is.
- 39:37[SPEAKER_00]: What do you do not what do you want to do because you can make somebody mad and like if somebody makes me mad I could want to like be mean or be rude or like have a negative reaction But it's it's the difference between wanting to do something and knowing that you shouldn't do that and you should try and do the right The better thing you know like take a second before you respond or if you lose a match, you know, maybe don't
- 40:00[SPEAKER_00]: Don't throw the paddle, don't break the paddle.
- 40:02[SPEAKER_00]: If you lose a point in your upset, don't kick the ball to the side, hit it back to them.
- 40:06[SPEAKER_00]: That's something that I did a lot, which I'm not happy about it.
- 40:11[SPEAKER_00]: I would lose a point.
- 40:12[SPEAKER_03]: It's cool though, you've grown.
- 40:13[SPEAKER_03]: It's a lot of the words perspective.
- 40:15[SPEAKER_03]: We're like, you're realizing, okay, if I don't win this time, I have another tournament next week.
- 40:19[SPEAKER_03]: And I can win.
- 40:20[SPEAKER_03]: Or is it more just maturity?
- 40:22[SPEAKER_03]: Is it like, I don't want to be that guy who's kicking the ball.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_03]: or is it mixed?
- 40:27[SPEAKER_00]: You know, not even the first one because it's like, there's always next week, but at the same time, like, time is going.
- 40:32[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like, it's fleeting.
- 40:33[SPEAKER_00]: You never know.
- 40:34[SPEAKER_00]: My pickleball career, like, I have three less years than I had three years ago.
- 40:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 40:37[SPEAKER_00]: So it's like, every month, like, I don't know.
- 40:40[SPEAKER_00]: Is this my last, this is my last month.
- 40:42[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I got to play like this could be my last year of playing.
- 40:44[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you never like injuries happen.
- 40:46[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, crazy things happen, you know, I, like, you never know what's going to happen.
- 40:50[SPEAKER_00]: You never know what's more holds.
- 40:51[SPEAKER_00]: So I, I tried to knife and there's always next tournament, but like this is it.
- 40:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's like, right here.
- 40:56[SPEAKER_00]: This is, this is all we have is this tournament right right in front of us.
- 40:59[SPEAKER_00]: This match right in front of us, and I think just can I, can I be happy with the effort I put in?
- 41:07[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's where I was,
- 41:09[SPEAKER_00]: not seeing things a couple of years ago to where I see things now is I would put everything I had into a tournament and if it didn't give me the result I wanted I would take that the wrong way I would take that and get super upset like something like something that shouldn't have happened happened whereas now it's did I give everything I could and if I did you know whatever happens happens yeah obviously it hurts more if you lose
- 41:36[SPEAKER_02]: I feel like, especially lately, you've touched on this on Instagram.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_02]: You've done a few posts about your perspective.
- 41:42[SPEAKER_02]: Pickleball was like the main focus of your life.
- 41:45[SPEAKER_02]: And now you've really, I don't know if it's recent or new, or if you're just really bringing it to the forefront of your life or life, but religion and just general perspective of, like, can you touch on this a little bit?
- 41:58[SPEAKER_02]: I know you've posted about it, but I just kind of want to hear it from your words about how you've been thinking about all this lately.
- 42:06[SPEAKER_00]: I think religion has helped me as a player a lot lately, you said that I put pickleball, or I pickleball is no longer the number one priority, and I made a post about that few weeks ago a month ago saying that, you know, there's a new hierarchy in my life, and that is,
- 42:23[SPEAKER_00]: god family pickleball.
- 42:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's in my bio right now.
- 42:27[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's just something that's super important and that's not necessarily the way I had been going about the last few years because sort of playing pickleball, there's something new, something exciting like, you know, let's maybe put the religion to the side, let's focus on what's right in front of me.
- 42:43[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's something that I did for a couple of years that I'm trying to, that I've, as of six months ago, six months ago,
- 42:55[SPEAKER_00]: re-rearranged the hierarchy to being what I just said, God, family, pickleball, whereas before it was probably like family pickleball, or maybe even pickleball family, God, like, and I think that's a problem.
- 43:07[SPEAKER_00]: You know, we're like I said a second ago like you know, you never know what in your last day is going to be we don't know how much time you have like that's what's important, you know when you really like you know what I like to talk about this stuff, but it's like what's important in life is, you know, is like faith faith family yeah faith family and I mean, uh,
- 43:28[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think I was raised Christian.
- 43:32[SPEAKER_00]: My dad was Catholic, but he, you know, I was raised Christian.
- 43:36[SPEAKER_00]: I'm, you know, I'm still figuring a lot of this out.
- 43:38[SPEAKER_00]: I, like, I hear all these different denominations.
- 43:40[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, bro, like, aren't we all the same?
- 43:42[SPEAKER_00]: Like, and like, I still struggle with that.
- 43:43[SPEAKER_00]: Like, there's so many different forms of...
- 43:45[SPEAKER_03]: Christianity, really just having, well, even just religions.
- 43:48[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, like, and religions.
- 43:50[SPEAKER_00]: And I, yeah, I mean, I've been looking to that a lot lately, a lot of the different religions, which is crazy, because I'm like, you know, that's a whole can of worms.
- 43:59[SPEAKER_03]: So when people have different beliefs, I'm not super religious, but I think I think purpose, meaning being a good person.
- 44:09[SPEAKER_03]: legacy, you know, and like in having impact is like my that's like my belief system, you know, that's like where I really that's where I try to like live within that.
- 44:20[SPEAKER_03]: But I think religions an amazing thing for people, I think having faith and having that belief and and those goals and like that I think it's really important.
- 44:30[SPEAKER_02]: And this has helped you on the court, too.
- 44:32[SPEAKER_02]: Like, especially if late you've talked about it, does it help take pressure off you?
- 44:36[SPEAKER_02]: Does it help you just regain perspective on, hey, this is a pickleball match?
- 44:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 44:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it does a lot, it really helps me kind of just set my priority straight.
- 44:50[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's the most important thing.
- 44:52[SPEAKER_00]: And that helps me a lot while I'm playing is know that the purpose of playing is not to win it's to play for the glory of God.
- 45:00[SPEAKER_00]: Like it's to play for bigger reason.
- 45:02[SPEAKER_00]: And that's a big thing.
- 45:05[SPEAKER_00]: When I started playing Pickable, I needed to be one in the world.
- 45:09[SPEAKER_00]: Like I needed to be one of the work like it was like it wasn't like, oh, I want this thing.
- 45:12[SPEAKER_00]: I go, yeah, for sure.
- 45:15[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, if I'm not one, I'm just in juniors, you know, being one in the state, being one in the nation, then being going to college, being one.
- 45:21[SPEAKER_00]: It's just like, I like, I, you know, I was one, a lot.
- 45:24[SPEAKER_00]: I felt like I just, it wasn't, I didn't have an option like I needed to be one.
- 45:29[SPEAKER_00]: And I think, you know, that, that has hurt me in my pickleball career of trying to get to number one.
- 45:34[SPEAKER_03]: It's like your psyche.
- 45:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, for sure.
- 45:35[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's like, it's like now you lose and it's like,
- 45:39[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I failure.
- 45:40[SPEAKER_02]: It doesn't let you enjoy the process because you're like, I mean, it motivates you, but like, dude, you're, and what we both are.
- 45:46[SPEAKER_02]: We're traveling 25 weeks here.
- 45:48[SPEAKER_02]: We get a conversation about this yesterday.
- 45:50[UNKNOWN]: Like,
- 45:51[SPEAKER_02]: what we go through traveling 25 we see here yet it was so lucky to be like professional football players and get paid to do this like it's the best life in the world but at some point like you it's like you don't even know what day of the week it is it's like where I'm what state of mind I can't imagine how what you're like I go to one tournament and I'm just like you're wiped out and I'm like I might maybe I'll play one division it's insane
- 46:15[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but we feel like enjoy that process.
- 46:17[SPEAKER_02]: So I think it's really cool you've talked about that because it's even made me think.
- 46:21[SPEAKER_02]: Like, how can I make sure I'm loving every second on the road?
- 46:24[SPEAKER_02]: How can I make sure that like when a math this tournament?
- 46:27[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'm still, it's full focus on the goal of winning and trying to compete at the highest level.
- 46:32[SPEAKER_02]: But when I'm not on the court,
- 46:35[SPEAKER_02]: I'm loving, you know, enjoying the ride, for sure.
- 46:38[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 46:39[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 46:39[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, you talk about, like, you never know when your last moment is, if you're not enjoying the ride, what's the point?
- 46:45[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 46:45[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I hear you saying, like, you're leaning more into, into God, you're leaning more into religion.
- 46:50[SPEAKER_03]: being the best person you can be, and I think within that it's allowing you to put pickleball in perspective, and also, you know how important it is in your life if you love it, but also knowing that there's things that are maybe more important than pickleball, and at the end of the day, like when pickleball is all said and done, it's about family and purpose and meaning and faith.
- 47:11[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 47:11[SPEAKER_03]: Which I think is powerful.
- 47:13[SPEAKER_03]: I think you've I mean just you've grown a ton.
- 47:16[SPEAKER_03]: I want to touch on MLP You were you were dragged you were redrafted by the ranchers or you were with the ranchers and you've been with them now for a couple of years Yeah, and I feel like they built a team around you I was actually skeptical of that team and I was kind of I was I was on record saying that I just I have the tweet Screwshot do you have been using as motivation.
- 47:37[SPEAKER_02]: I love that that's in and I also and do you remember our bet
- 47:41[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, the plane you got mad at me.
- 47:43[SPEAKER_03]: I said that team is going to be good and you're like I was wrong and I and I've I've been on record saying I was wrong and I think I was skeptical of you being the anchor and and then I think Tina I was skeptical of you just didn't know Tina I didn't really know I didn't know Tina, but I was I was just kind of like
- 48:02[SPEAKER_03]: I don't see it and you proved a lot of people wrong and I feel like you've kind of in that journey you've become one of the best players in the world.
- 48:11[SPEAKER_03]: What is it like being on the ranchers?
- 48:14[SPEAKER_03]: I am curious what happened towards the end of this past season.
- 48:17[SPEAKER_03]: If you're open to sharing, I feel like there's a lot of mystery around what was going on with the GM and like you took a couple of events off, maybe one or two, are you open
- 48:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, again, uh, first let's just touch on the MLP as a whole.
- 48:34[SPEAKER_00]: I think what's crazy about the difference between PPA and MLP is this last year in the year before is it's like there's really a feeling if you're not first your last in a
- 48:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you're right and whereas in PPA, you know people make it to the semis and you're like whoa that guy is that person She he made it to the semis like they're playing well.
- 48:54[SPEAKER_00]: They're doing good right now and and I'll pee.
- 48:56[SPEAKER_00]: It's like you've got like the two people in the finals like that's You know who won that ever whoever won that's all we care about.
- 49:03[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we don't care about it It's actually so true because if I was like if you I was like tell me who was in the semis this year I know the shock loss Columbus, but I don't even know who's on Dallas and no didn't that was Dallas Dallas in the quarters
- 49:14[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, see you, so my I was L.A. L.A. And anyway, it's gone.
- 49:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I just, I really feel like that's, and that's tough because it doesn't leave a lot of room for a lot of players to, you know, to shine.
- 49:28[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 49:29[UNKNOWN]: And
- 49:29[SPEAKER_00]: Whereas PPA, I mean, there's a mix of people winning, there's a winner every single week.
- 49:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 49:34[SPEAKER_00]: That means there's different people doing well consistently.
- 49:37[SPEAKER_00]: And then there's also different people winning consistently, you know, for the most part.
- 49:42[SPEAKER_00]: And MLP just doesn't have that.
- 49:44[SPEAKER_00]: So it makes it tough.
- 49:45[SPEAKER_00]: It really makes it tough.
- 49:46[SPEAKER_03]: It all boils down to that one moment.
- 49:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, which I think a few years back, we had an MLP where there were multiple winners, you know?
- 49:52[SPEAKER_00]: More finale.
- 49:53[SPEAKER_00]: When I was on the DC Pickable team, we were a winner.
- 49:55[SPEAKER_00]: Orlando Squeeze, they were a winner.
- 49:57[SPEAKER_00]: Chicago Slice, they were a winner.
- 49:59[SPEAKER_00]: You had multiple winners, and it felt very different than it feels now, still a new sport, still working on it.
- 50:04[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, but I mean NFL, there's one winner who lost the Super Bowl last year, who lost the NBA championship.
- 50:12[SPEAKER_03]: It's kind of, things should kind of, you know, funnel into this, this, this, this finality, but I do hear what you're saying.
- 50:17[SPEAKER_00]: It makes interesting having both an individual, it's an individual sport is the difference.
- 50:21[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that's where that's where, well, that's where the conversation is, is pickable an individual sport or should it be a team sport, you know, how many people are on the court when you're playing a match at any given time?
- 50:32[SPEAKER_03]: What do you prefer, PPA?
- 50:33[SPEAKER_00]: No more, I mean, uh,
- 50:35[SPEAKER_00]: As of this moment, I think a lot of people do, that might be controversial, MLP has been awesome, it can be awesome.
- 50:43[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, no, I respect that.
- 50:45[SPEAKER_03]: I also think that like you've made it very clear how disciplined and determined you are.
- 50:52[SPEAKER_03]: And if you have a teammate that's not kind of on that level, they're holding you back.
- 50:55[SPEAKER_03]: They're not giving you your moment to shine.
- 50:59[SPEAKER_03]: So I resonate with that.
- 51:01[SPEAKER_02]: I will, I will say though.
- 51:03[SPEAKER_02]: being at an MLP event can be some of the most fun you'll ever have.
- 51:07[SPEAKER_02]: So maybe for the players, you're not having a different, they're just different.
- 51:12[SPEAKER_02]: For the spectators, though, it's a blast.
- 51:15[SPEAKER_03]: It's a blast, but so are the PPA finals when there's extra fire on this thing, Matt.
- 51:19[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just saying it's, it can be very amazing.
- 51:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I won't be can be extremely electric, and I don't disagree with that.
- 51:26[SPEAKER_03]: Okay, and so this year, what would happen towards end of this year?
- 51:29[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think I'm a piece of tough, especially with the schedule this year.
- 51:33[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of events back to back.
- 51:35[SPEAKER_00]: And I think what happened was,
- 51:40[SPEAKER_00]: What do you want to know specifically?
- 51:42[SPEAKER_03]: Well, you took a tournament off one or two, one tournament off.
- 51:46[SPEAKER_03]: And then, I mean, maybe it's because the ranchers are in our backyard or we're in their backyard.
- 51:53[SPEAKER_03]: But then the GM was on the crowd.
- 51:57[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm just curious, what went down there?
- 52:00[SPEAKER_03]: And yeah.
- 52:03[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 52:05[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I mean, to put it simply, we played at the shock, or no, was it the Flash's facility in Dallas?
- 52:14[SPEAKER_00]: It's got to be in Dallas, right?
- 52:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 52:15[SPEAKER_00]: So we played there, not my best showing.
- 52:19[SPEAKER_00]: Mentally, I think I was a little exhausted, but I mean, I'm still out there trying to compete.
- 52:25[SPEAKER_00]: I think this is where I'm up here can get tough because we have our coach tell me to play a certain way, play consistent and then the way I play doubles on the right is I'm aggressive.
- 52:39[SPEAKER_00]: That's just the way I've had a lot of success, obviously maybe I should be consistent here and then.
- 52:45[SPEAKER_00]: But that's where it's tough is we're individuals now put into a team where we have to
- 52:53[SPEAKER_00]: now where there's a coach trying to coach for individuals like and that's just really tough and then we also
- 52:58[SPEAKER_00]: six individuals technically, so I like I played a match and I was it was against Ben and Hunter and I or yeah, Ben and Hunter and no way and howls and I'm like speeding up a ton on the right and it doesn't work, you know, sometimes that happens like and I gave it my all like I always do but it's like like, yeah, because of my day mentally I don't know like I feel like we had a lot of tournaments and roads tough to just like
- 53:23[SPEAKER_00]: Just think everything.
- 53:24[SPEAKER_00]: It's like I was doing what felt safe.
- 53:27[SPEAKER_00]: Let's put it that way and for me being safe is going for the ball Anyway the the GM, you know, ask me just to not come to the next one and I was like, okay?
- 53:38[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you know, that was that was it Usually he asked me not to come.
- 53:41[SPEAKER_02]: I was because of attitude.
- 53:42[SPEAKER_02]: Was it like he felt like he wasn't lit?
- 53:44[SPEAKER_02]: You weren't listening or because you weren't giving your all or was it just like budding of heads completely?
- 53:49[SPEAKER_00]: I
- 53:50[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's a complicated question because I don't really know exactly what was going on in in his head.
- 53:58[SPEAKER_03]: But how did that make you feel?
- 54:00[SPEAKER_03]: Were you relieved or relieved?
- 54:02[SPEAKER_00]: It's tough.
- 54:02[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's really tough when you go from being an individual to I have my coach at the time and now I have another coach and it's like, if I don't agree, I don't really have I don't have any choice.
- 54:15[SPEAKER_00]: If you disagree with someone, you're on a team that you're on a team with
- 54:19[SPEAKER_00]: You don't really have an option and, you know, and it's still an individual sport.
- 54:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 54:23[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, like, you know, there's a great guy.
- 54:25[SPEAKER_00]: I think, you know, I think he wants what best, what, once what is best for the team, and I think he works super hard, and I have nothing, like, I think he just, he really wants what's best for the team.
- 54:36[SPEAKER_00]: And he wants, like, and that's tough, because I think, you know, you can have the perfect idea, but if you don't execute it well, that's where it gets tough.
- 54:43[SPEAKER_00]: And that was where the problem I had was the execution.
- 54:45[SPEAKER_03]: We had Tyron, and we were talking about MLP in general, and she was saying that there are certain teams that wanna win to an extent that is unhealthy, where the way people act on court.
- 54:55[SPEAKER_03]: And I think there are certain teams that are so invested.
- 54:58[SPEAKER_03]: I think the ranchers are one of those teams.
- 55:00[SPEAKER_03]: And I've heard that being playing with the ranchers, it's very professional.
- 55:03[SPEAKER_03]: Like there's a lot of expectation, there's a lot of watching film, there's tea, everything's team, team dinners, tea.
- 55:10[SPEAKER_03]: And that can be a lot for an individual.
- 55:14[SPEAKER_03]: someone who isn't kind of that kind of mindset, you know, and so it's interesting.
- 55:20[SPEAKER_03]: Like with the chefs, we did some team stuff, but we also wanted it to be fun.
- 55:25[SPEAKER_03]: I wanted them to go out and like, and just like really enjoy it, and because I know it's a grind.
- 55:31[SPEAKER_02]: But I think I will say, because it sounds like we're talking about this in a negative realm.
- 55:40[SPEAKER_02]: I think the ranchers
- 55:42[SPEAKER_02]: of any team on the map, do the best job in terms of making it feel like a sport, like this is a professional score.
- 55:51[SPEAKER_02]: 100%.
- 55:52[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not speaking from Negrim at all.
- 55:53[SPEAKER_02]: They're saying, there's social media, they bring fans and a team for sure.
- 56:01[SPEAKER_02]: They're events, they have, they're always having new investors that they're promoting, I think they leave teams.
- 56:07[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, they've got to tremendously crush it.
- 56:12[SPEAKER_02]: like a player like you might feel like you want your space whereas like others are like oh I love this like I think Eric is like very like you know he loves being part of of all that stuff why it too like and so I think it's just like mixing and magic personality but I just want to say like I personally think it's so good for the sport
- 56:32[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I think it is so good for the sport.
- 56:36[SPEAKER_03]: As long as the net result is mental health is good, people are having fun and it is a positive experience.
- 56:46[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm not saying it wasn't that, but in this case, there was a breakdown.
- 56:51[SPEAKER_03]: And I think that's unfortunate.
- 56:54[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm not putting blame anywhere.
- 56:56[SPEAKER_03]: I think, you know, maybe it's just the moment and just all the stress.
- 57:00[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I would just like to say, like, I really enjoy the ranchers team.
- 57:04[SPEAKER_00]: Like the team as a whole, I mean, Evan Ted, like they're great.
- 57:10[SPEAKER_00]: They're awesome.
- 57:11[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, and then you've got Alex, Virginia, Caleb, love all of them.
- 57:15[SPEAKER_00]: Like we've got a really great group of teammates.
- 57:18[SPEAKER_00]: Like it's a, it's a really great team.
- 57:20[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's just, you know, you can, where I get the, where I get a little,
- 57:26[SPEAKER_00]: But in heads was when it came to pickleball.
- 57:28[SPEAKER_00]: Because I feel like I know a lot about pickleball.
- 57:30[SPEAKER_00]: And when somebody says, like, they know more than me, like, I'm gonna be like, all right, well, let's see.
- 57:36[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you know, like, I know a lot about pickleball.
- 57:38[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I think I can help make this team great.
- 57:40[SPEAKER_00]: And then if they're like, well, I think my idea is gonna make this team great.
- 57:43[SPEAKER_00]: That's where, like, if those ideas don't align.
- 57:45[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I mean, it's pretty normal, I think, for coaches in a GM and super normally.
- 57:50[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, like it's nothing.
- 57:51[SPEAKER_03]: I just think there is,
- 57:53[SPEAKER_03]: There was a lot of questions around that.
- 57:54[SPEAKER_03]: And I think a lot of fans probably are curious and I was curious and so I appreciate you breaking it down.
- 58:00[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 58:00[SPEAKER_02]: I want to transition from this to something that you talked about which is you have this super aggressive game style.
- 58:07[SPEAKER_02]: And I think, you know, I've talked to Lee about it too, just about, you know, how Anne Lee's super aggressive and you've worked with Lee for a long time, how has she been like pivotal to developing that game style?
- 58:19[SPEAKER_02]: And obviously you had an amazing rise in doubles over the last few years.
- 58:23[SPEAKER_02]: You worked with her is this something that you guys tried to like craft for you like all right Christian We're gonna make you this hyper aggressive player.
- 58:30[SPEAKER_02]: I actually wanted to ask Lee this when we had her on Just because it's like It's it's so interesting because it goes against like pickleball like strategy almost.
- 58:40[SPEAKER_02]: It's like all right Like be disciplined like stay there and think and you're like no like you and Andre like no We're gonna speed up like every third ball
- 58:47[SPEAKER_00]: uh it's such a it's such a complicated question to be honest just about like attacking it's way more complex but i'll just start from let's just go at the beginning real quick when i started playing pickleball you had been in call in like three years ago when it miss a ball mm-hmm like they were just dink dink dink and here i am uh coming to the sport been playing for three months and they've been playing for five years or however long and like they're going to be they're going to dink better than me yeah
- 59:13[SPEAKER_00]: So the whole thing was I'm not going to be able to drink as well as you, so if I can't drink as well as you, how am I going to win?
- 59:20[SPEAKER_00]: I can't beat you by drinking, how am I going to win?
- 59:22[SPEAKER_02]: It's really, really interesting.
- 59:23[SPEAKER_00]: It's like it's kind of as simple as that.
- 59:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, hey, if I attack, I know I fast hands.
- 59:28[SPEAKER_00]: So my hands could be faster than yours.
- 59:30[SPEAKER_00]: So I get into a hands battle with you.
- 59:33[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to be a lot better than if I try and, you know, you don't be drink to death.
- 59:36[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'm like, I'm just not that that's honestly it's it's super cool to hear this right now.
- 59:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean that like that was the that was the reasoning and it worked a lot.
- 59:43[SPEAKER_00]: I had a lot of success against the best teams in the world over over the years.
- 59:49[SPEAKER_00]: Funny enough like this year, I feel like it's kind of going back to thinking like it is.
- 59:56[SPEAKER_00]: I think a lifetime ball it might be it might be the lifetime ball just because it's it's hard to attack counters are so good.
- 1:00:06[SPEAKER_00]: uh... i think i think dinking is is something that i'm going to try to implement a little bit more now who's the hardest player for you to play against uh... singles doubles singles and doubles well you know for ben
- 1:00:25[SPEAKER_00]: You know, that's a tough question because let's just say, I give you an answer and then we clip it and then now the person who I say is going to look at this and be like, oh, this guy doesn't like got this guy doesn't like, okay, let's not say yeah, let's not let's not answer that let's not answer that let's not answer who's the easiest, no, I'm sure who is who's the best singles player in the world right now there's no answer to that at any given day.
- 1:00:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, there's a I mean look at the look at who's one tournaments this year.
- 1:00:54[SPEAKER_00]: You've got like five guys who have one more than one tournament this year.
- 1:00:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think that could be wrong, but you have at least five guys that have one one tournament this year.
- 1:01:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like There's no there's no top player.
- 1:01:06[SPEAKER_00]: I can name you the top like five, but even that can be changed on a given day.
- 1:01:11[SPEAKER_00]: I mean you have upsets all the time.
- 1:01:14[SPEAKER_03]: Who's your favorite player to play against?
- 1:01:16[SPEAKER_03]: And that doesn't mean like easy, it means most fun.
- 1:01:18[SPEAKER_03]: Like who are you gonna go out and you know it's gonna be a battle?
- 1:01:21[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I feel like a great answer to that, is y'all man.
- 1:01:23[SPEAKER_00]: I knew you were gonna say, yeah, I've had a lot of good battles with him.
- 1:01:27[SPEAKER_00]: He's fun, he keeps it lighthearted.
- 1:01:29[SPEAKER_02]: You guys have three setters every time.
- 1:01:31[SPEAKER_00]: We do have three game, three gamers, all of the time.
- 1:01:34[SPEAKER_00]: And it's, I feel like always lose the game.
- 1:01:35[SPEAKER_03]: I love that you calm gamers, cause all the tennis guys really go with the sets and they're not sets brother.
- 1:01:40[SPEAKER_02]: I say sets because I like to think of,
- 1:01:42[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I guess it's just weird.
- 1:01:43[SPEAKER_02]: It's game.
- 1:01:43[SPEAKER_02]: It's like caught a paddle a racket, bro.
- 1:01:45[SPEAKER_02]: Well, when someone says like, oh, if you played that game, I think like the game is in like that was like the match.
- 1:01:51[SPEAKER_02]: The match game is another word from match to me and so a set like makes more sense.
- 1:01:55[SPEAKER_02]: It's like, I know, but this is pickleball.
- 1:01:58[SPEAKER_03]: Leave me alone, Jared.
- 1:02:00[SPEAKER_03]: Um, what are your goals the next two to five?
- 1:02:02[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I think I kind of know like I think it's like to lean into your faith and to start gearing towards building a family and but what are like,
- 1:02:11[SPEAKER_00]: I'd love to build a family.
- 1:02:13[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's one of the most important things that we can do, that I can do, like it's kind of why we were made to have a family and to procreate.
- 1:02:24[SPEAKER_00]: But other than that, I mean, pickleball.
- 1:02:28[SPEAKER_00]: So there's pickleball, there's family.
- 1:02:30[SPEAKER_00]: I'd like to get to a point where I'm financially set.
- 1:02:34[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think I'm there, but I think that's a big thing.
- 1:02:38[SPEAKER_00]: Just you know make try to make money try to save money.
- 1:02:41[SPEAKER_00]: I don't I don't I don't spend a lot of money for the most part I mean on this outfit you're looking at the shoes or not.
- 1:02:49[SPEAKER_03]: It's a level.
- 1:02:49[SPEAKER_00]: I've been I've been one of these like I've been I've been one of the Rolex for like three years And I've been able to afford one for like three years and I still haven't bought in one Yeah, that's a big thing Is that a Rolex?
- 1:03:01[SPEAKER_00]: No, it's not it's a tag.
- 1:03:03[SPEAKER_00]: I do get a Rolex that I want a Daytona
- 1:03:05[SPEAKER_00]: and that's like a lot of money and I just don't I can't feel comfortable spending that much money on something uh and tell you you're like I mean what I've done is over the last three years as I bought like one I bought like one watch uh I bought two watches in the last three years the first one was uh
- 1:03:24[SPEAKER_00]: at the end of my first year where I had a good year and I was like I can actually buy something nice and I was like I can buy it and it's not going to change anything in my life.
- 1:03:32[SPEAKER_00]: Like that's when you should make big purchases as well.
- 1:03:34[SPEAKER_00]: You can buy it and it doesn't change anything in your life.
- 1:03:37[SPEAKER_02]: I love I love Christian Olsen financial advice.
- 1:03:40[SPEAKER_00]: I actually listened to a crazy amount of like finance podcasts and all that still just because I mean I studied that I have no practical knowledge other than myself, but I like you know like Dave Ramsey He's might be a little outdated, but I do like listening to Emmys a financial group
- 1:03:59[SPEAKER_03]: So by at once, it doesn't affect your life.
- 1:04:01[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, by at once, it doesn't affect your life.
- 1:04:03[SPEAKER_00]: I think what I really want to dive into just next to five years is like my faith.
- 1:04:08[SPEAKER_00]: I really want to like study the Bible and then pickleball goals for pickleball.
- 1:04:14[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's I love the fact that like I waited last to talk about pickleball because it takes a lot of pressure off because like, you know, a year ago, my first answer would be like, oh, pickleball I wanted to do this.
- 1:04:25[SPEAKER_00]: I need to do this like I really like right now.
- 1:04:27[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, yeah, pickleball train, you know, get, you know, work on my two into back in.
- 1:04:33[SPEAKER_00]: That's that's really what I want to do in pickleball.
- 1:04:36[SPEAKER_00]: I want to be to the point where like I can go back in cross court with Chris A worth all day.
- 1:04:41[SPEAKER_03]: I'll tell you, man, you are, I think that I'm impressed with how much you've kind of evolved and matured over the past couple years.
- 1:04:51[SPEAKER_03]: You're super passionate, right?
- 1:04:53[SPEAKER_03]: Like I love that.
- 1:04:54[SPEAKER_03]: I love people who are passionate.
- 1:04:55[SPEAKER_03]: I love people who have a zest for life and get an after it and know what they want.
- 1:04:59[SPEAKER_03]: I love that you wear your heart on your sleeve and that you're that you're open and you're becoming even more vocal with the things that you care about I think that has gotten me in trouble in my life, and I just don't care a lot of time because I'm gonna be who I am and authentic and Yeah, man, I think you're you've you've come a long way and it's it's been fun to watch it's been really fun to get to know you more I think you're a just a stud I just want to add I think like I said I've known you for a while
- 1:05:29[SPEAKER_02]: And I feel like when we first got into pickleball, I didn't see as much of your personality off the court.
- 1:05:36[SPEAKER_02]: You weren't talking as much.
- 1:05:37[SPEAKER_02]: It wasn't like you were hanging out with a bunch of people.
- 1:05:39[SPEAKER_02]: And I feel like over this past year, I've gotten to know you better.
- 1:05:43[SPEAKER_02]: And I think a lot of the players have gotten to know you better, Eric, and you know, Fed, or like, yeah, I went golfing with Christian today, like we had the best time.
- 1:05:49[SPEAKER_02]: And so I think that's really cool.
- 1:05:51[SPEAKER_02]: Just getting to know you on a personal level too.
- 1:05:53[SPEAKER_02]: And obviously, we go way back.
- 1:05:55[SPEAKER_02]: But thanks for coming on here and chatting.
- 1:05:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, of course.
- 1:06:00[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you both for having me any time any time you want me to come back.
- 1:06:03[SPEAKER_02]: Well, thanks, Christian.
- 1:06:05[SPEAKER_02]: And so you've had this relationship with paddle tech too, which I think it's funny because my brother Lincoln, he's a little paddle wizard, but he works for 35 capital, the company that owns paddle tech and prox are.
- 1:06:18[SPEAKER_02]: How was that relationship in with them?
- 1:06:21[SPEAKER_00]: It's great coming up on two years now.
- 1:06:25[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll see if I stay with them, I'd love to.
- 1:06:27[SPEAKER_00]: And I have my own signature paddle with them, which absolutely loves you.
- 1:06:32[SPEAKER_00]: Do you have it here?
- 1:06:33[SPEAKER_00]: I do.
- 1:06:34[SPEAKER_00]: Actually, yeah, I brought it.
- 1:06:36[SPEAKER_00]: It's the PaddleTech Bantum TKO CX.
- 1:06:40[SPEAKER_03]: CKO, it's the name of our tournament as well.
- 1:06:42[SPEAKER_00]: I know that is.
- 1:06:43[SPEAKER_00]: You named that after the paddle came out?
- 1:06:45[SPEAKER_03]: No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
- 1:07:02[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's a great name.
- 1:07:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it is a good name.
- 1:07:05[SPEAKER_00]: I always thought it was like tweeter King.
- 1:07:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:08[SPEAKER_00]: Like, and then I don't know what that means.
- 1:07:09[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, what does TK have to stand for?
- 1:07:11[SPEAKER_02]: Tweeter King.
- 1:07:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, officially.
- 1:07:14[SPEAKER_00]: What?
- 1:07:14[SPEAKER_00]: It's tweeter King officially.
- 1:07:16[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:07:16[SPEAKER_02]: New line.
- 1:07:17[SPEAKER_00]: I mean a little bit.
- 1:07:17[SPEAKER_02]: We're technically not okay.
- 1:07:19[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, okay.
- 1:07:19[SPEAKER_00]: I've always thought that the TK was like, Oh, tweeter King, and then I was like, I don't know why they added the O, but that's cool.
- 1:07:25[SPEAKER_03]: because it's TKO.
- 1:07:26[SPEAKER_00]: TKO.
- 1:07:27[SPEAKER_03]: It is technical knockout.
- 1:07:28[SPEAKER_02]: Well, that's what that is.
- 1:07:29[SPEAKER_03]: That's what it is.
- 1:07:30[SPEAKER_03]: T, that's what T goes.
- 1:07:31[SPEAKER_03]: It's boxing, Terry.
- 1:07:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:07:32[SPEAKER_00]: Or the kitchen.
- 1:07:33[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, yeah.
- 1:07:34[SPEAKER_03]: It's technical knockout.
- 1:07:35[SPEAKER_03]: The kitchen open and Twitter can be official.
- 1:07:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:07:37[SPEAKER_03]: In that order.
- 1:07:38[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, so I use the 12.7 millimeter, which is like the thinner one.
- 1:07:42[SPEAKER_00]: I started with the 14.3 millimeter.
- 1:07:45[SPEAKER_00]: A little bit thicker, it's better for control handling.
- 1:07:48[SPEAKER_00]: I love paddles, I'm not like obsessed with them, but I do definitely like to try out different sizes, different lengths, and this is the one that works best for me.
- 1:07:59[SPEAKER_00]: I like the fact that it's kind of like a tennis racket.
- 1:08:02[SPEAKER_00]: Which, you know, four right now, four me, four people transitioning from tennis is really good to start with this one.
- 1:08:10[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of the single players used it.
- 1:08:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:08:12[SPEAKER_03]: I'll have to give it a go.
- 1:08:13[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, like five of the top 10 have been using it lately, you know?
- 1:08:18[SPEAKER_03]: It's go.
- 1:08:18[SPEAKER_03]: Padultak, they're a partner of ours as well.
- 1:08:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, let's go.
