Speaker 1: And on this holiday weekend, we decided to replay an
• 0:09
Speaker 1: awesome episode that we did about a year ago, and
• 0:12
Speaker 1: that is Centator Ted Cruise's favorite movies a great list.
• 0:16
Speaker 1: And if you are like the two of us and
• 0:18
Speaker 1: you'll love to watch movies over the holiday break with
• 0:21
Speaker 1: your family, you do not want to miss this list, Cenator.
• 0:24
Speaker 2: What's on your list? What are you going to rewatch
• 0:26
Speaker 2: during Christmas this year?
• 0:27
Speaker 3: Well, listen, let me just say Merry Christmas to everyone.
• 0:30
Speaker 3: I hope you're having a wonderful, relaxing Christmas. And one
• 0:33
Speaker 3: of the things that I've always done at Christmas from
• 0:35
Speaker 3: when I was a kid to now is my family
• 0:38
Speaker 3: we go to the movies. My dad loves movies, my
• 0:40
Speaker 3: mom loves movies, and so we go to the movies.
• 0:42
Speaker 3: Particularly Christmas time, we'll go see movies. And so we
• 0:47
Speaker 3: want to play you a list of thirty of the
• 0:49
Speaker 3: greatest movies of the twenty first century and and and
• 0:53
Speaker 3: if you watch them, put a comment down below, let
• 0:56
Speaker 3: us know if you like the movies, let us know
• 0:58
Speaker 3: if there are anything you want to add. But but
• 1:00
Speaker 3: here is thirty any one of which would be a
• 1:03
Speaker 3: great way to spend some time with your family over
• 1:06
Speaker 3: this Christmas break center.
• 1:07
Speaker 1: People that don't know you, well, I'm gonna give them
• 1:11
Speaker 1: a little bit of a clue. You absolutely love movies,
• 1:17
Speaker 1: and you put together a list of your favorite movies
• 1:20
Speaker 1: and also series and shows that you watch. And if
• 1:23
Speaker 1: you've ever wondered what Senator Cruz is watching when he's
• 1:26
Speaker 1: flying all the time, here's a really good list we're
• 1:29
Speaker 1: gonna be giving you on this Christmas.
• 1:31
Speaker 3: Well, and let me just echo that, Merry Christmas. I
• 1:33
Speaker 3: hope you're having a wonderful and blessed day. I hope
• 1:35
Speaker 3: Sanna came down the chimney and your kids are overjoyed,
• 1:39
Speaker 3: and you're spending time, maybe with some hot cocoa. We
• 1:42
Speaker 3: often do Christmas by the tree, where all be in
• 1:45
Speaker 3: my bathrobe, We'll all be in our pajamas, the kids
• 1:48
Speaker 3: will be opening presents. We all actually have cups of
• 1:51
  Speaker 3: hot cocoa, and it's a beautiful time, and it's a
• 1:54
Speaker 3: beautiful time to reflect not just on the love your
• 1:57
Speaker 3: family has for each other, but the love God has
• 2:00
Speaker 3: us in the salvation He sent for us. Now I
• 2:02
Speaker 3: don't know about you, but but over holidays, what my
• 2:05
Speaker 3: family has always done is we go to movies. We
• 2:07
Speaker 3: go to movies over Thanksgiving break, we go to movies
• 2:09
  Speaker 3: over Christmas break.
• 2:10
Speaker 1: I love movies. As a kid, both my parents love movies.
• 2:13
Speaker 1: I would go to movies with my mom and dad
• 2:15
Speaker 1: when I was a little kid. I still go to
• 2:17
Speaker 1: movies with them now.
• 2:18
Speaker 2: But way, you're a movie theater guy. Just so people know.
• 2:20
Speaker 1: This, I like the real theater, so I like the
• 2:22
  Speaker 1: big screen.
• 2:23
Speaker 3: I like popcorn and gummy bears and and you know,
• 2:26
Speaker 3: the the experience of being there. And by the way,
• 2:29
Speaker 3: I'm also rabid about staying until the very end, till
• 2:33
Speaker 3: the last moment of the credits play.
• 2:35
Speaker 1: I will not get up and leave. There's a sense
• 2:38
  Speaker 1: of completeness.
• 2:39
Speaker 3: Of appreciating the entirety of of the the movie. And
• 2:42
Speaker 3: so what we decided we do today is put together
• 2:46
Speaker 3: just a compilation of movies that that that I love,
• 2:49
Speaker 3: that I that I recommend to you, and and and
• 2:51
Speaker 3: hopefully as you're taking some time with your family, maybe
• 2:53
Speaker 3: you'll go watch one of them and laugh or cry,
• 2:56
Speaker 3: and it'll touch you and you'll enjoy it. And I
• 2:58
Speaker 3: think art and storytelling or are beautiful, beautiful things.
• 3:01
Speaker 1: So that being said here in the big shows and
• 3:05
Speaker 1: the big movies on Senator Cruise's list, Merry Christmas. I
• 3:09
Speaker 1: get asked all the time from many of you guys
• 3:11
Speaker 1: that are watching or listening right now, what is Ted
• 3:14
Speaker 1: Cruz like behind the scenes. So we thought we'd have
• 3:18
Speaker 1: a little fun. I'm gonna ask him some questions, and
• 3:20
Speaker 1: you're even gonna find out what his favorite movies are.
• 3:23
Speaker 2: Senator, We're gonna have a little fun.
• 3:25
Speaker 1: I get asked all the time when I'm all over
• 3:27
Speaker 1: the country in half of this last week in New York,
• 3:30
Speaker 1: so what is Ted Cruz really like behind the scenes?
• 3:33
Speaker 1: And I say, I actually, if people got to see
• 3:36
Speaker 1: the side of you that I know, you're actually really
• 3:38
Speaker 1: fun to be around. You're also a huge movie buff
• 3:42
Speaker 1: as well, And so I'm gonna ask some fun questions
• 3:46
Speaker 1: just to kind of let people know behind the curtain
• 3:49
Speaker 1: who you really are. So let's start with this. What
• 3:51
Speaker 1: is the last thing you watched on a plane?
• 3:55
Speaker 3: What is the last thing I watched on a plane
• 3:58
Speaker 3: was Outer Banks, which is a series. It's a teeny
• 4:02
Speaker 3: bopper series and it's phenomenal. I am in the middle
• 4:05
  Speaker 3: of season three. And there's a reason I'm watching a
• 4:07
Speaker 3: teeny bopper series, which is my youngest daughter, Catherine loves
• 4:11
  Speaker 3: Outer Banks.
• 4:11
Speaker 4: She's at camp right now, yep.
• 4:13
Speaker 3: And when I dropped her off at camp, she said, Dad,
• 4:16
Speaker 3: I want you to watch out her Banks, and I
• 4:18
Speaker 3: want you to write to me in letters and tell
• 4:21
Speaker 3: me what you think is the season's progressing.
• 4:24
Speaker 4: And so I've been regularly.
• 4:25
Speaker 3: I write to her about every couple of days and
• 4:27
  Speaker 3: I tell her, Okay, here's where I am. I'm at
• 4:30
Speaker 3: this point. I'm at this point. This character just my
• 4:32
Speaker 3: favorite character, JB. Yeah too, no doubt about it.
• 4:36
Speaker 4: So she asked me that I'm a little troubled.
• 4:38
Speaker 3: Her favorite character is JJ who who is kind of
• 4:41
Speaker 3: a look I guess if you're a thirteen year old girl,
• 4:44
Speaker 3: he's you know, he's always doing the dumbest thing imaginable,
• 4:47
  Speaker 3: but he's kind of a I like John B.
• 4:49
Speaker 4: John B is a good character.
• 4:50
  Speaker 2: It's such a fun show.
• 4:52
Speaker 1: So when you were growing up, what was it that
• 4:54
Speaker 1: you were watching high school college?
• 4:56
Speaker 3: But by the way, spoiler alert, I apologize if you
• 4:59
Speaker 3: haven't seen seen I'm gonna give a spoiler alert right now,
• 5:01
Speaker 3: So just fast forward through this if you don't want
• 5:03
Speaker 3: a spoiler alert. But in season two, when when when
• 5:06
Speaker 3: Ward is blown blown up, I knew Ward was not
• 5:09
Speaker 3: blown up, and so I wrote her, I said, yeah,
• 5:11
Speaker 3: Ward just died. I'm very confident he's alive. And I
• 5:14
Speaker 3: remembered they keep scuba gear in the boat. He got
• 5:17
Speaker 3: in the scuba gear and then like.
• 5:18
Speaker 1: Seven epsom there you got to figure it out, and
• 5:22
Speaker 1: you're like, they got to keep this, they gotta keep
• 5:24
  Speaker 1: the series.
• 5:25
Speaker 3: So I felt pretty good that I was at least
• 5:27
Speaker 3: a step ahead of the teeny Bopper series.
• 5:29
  Speaker 2: I like that.
• 5:30
Speaker 1: So what were you watching in high school? Like what
• 5:32
Speaker 1: were your favorite shows? What was your favorite movie?
• 5:35
Speaker 4: So I love movies.
• 5:37
Speaker 3: My parents love movies, like like we would, you know,
• 5:40
Speaker 3: this is what we do. So so every holiday, every Thanksgiving,
• 5:43
Speaker 3: every Christmas, my family would go out and watch.
• 5:45
Speaker 2: Movies that Diehard a Christmas movie.
• 5:47
Speaker 3: Of course it is okay, good, absolutely, yes, there's only
• 5:49
Speaker 3: one right answer. Diehart is absolutely a Christmas movie. But
• 5:54
Speaker 3: we would go out and do movies. When I was
• 5:56
Speaker 3: a kid, when I was like eight nine years old,
• 5:58
Speaker 3: my dad would drop me off at the theater.
• 6:00
Speaker 4: All Saturday and I'd watch like five movies.
• 6:03
Speaker 3: I'd go from one theater to the next to the
• 6:05
Speaker 3: next and just watch everything there.
• 6:07
Speaker 4: It's we all love movies.
• 6:08
Speaker 3: So what I've done done today for this show is
• 6:11
Speaker 3: I put together a list of twenty five movies. Now
• 6:14
Speaker 3: this is not exclusive, this is not the only twenty
• 6:17
Speaker 3: five movies I like, and I don't even know that
• 6:19
Speaker 3: it's my twenty five favorite. But it's twenty five awesome movies,
• 6:23
Speaker 3: which if you haven't watched, I recommend you watch. You
• 6:26
Speaker 3: will enjoy them, you will laugh, you will be moved,
• 6:28
Speaker 3: you will get good things from them. So let's go
• 6:30
Speaker 3: through the twenty five.
• 6:31
Speaker 1: I gotta ask for one more question for you, twenty
• 6:33
Speaker 1: five what movie have you watched the most in your
• 6:35
Speaker 1: life over and over again?
• 6:37
Speaker 4: Well, that actually happens to be number one on the list.
• 6:39
Speaker 2: I knew it. I like this.
• 6:40
Speaker 3: So my favorite movie of all time is The Princess Bride. Really,
• 6:44
Speaker 3: I love The Princess Bride. I think every character in
• 6:49
Speaker 3: it is exquisite. Every line from every character is fantastic.
• 6:53
  Speaker 1: I'll tell you.
• 6:54
Speaker 3: In college, we used to play a game called Drinking
• 6:57
Speaker 3: Princess Bride. And so the way you play Drinking Princess Bride.
• 7:01
Speaker 3: As you sit down with a bunch of college kids,
• 7:03
Speaker 3: you put the movie on and you try to say
• 7:05
Speaker 3: each line immediately before it's said. If you get it right,
• 7:10
Speaker 3: you point at somebody. They have to drink. If you
• 7:13
Speaker 3: screw it up even slightly, you drink. And if two
• 7:17
Speaker 3: or more people say the same line at the same time,
• 7:20
  Speaker 3: everybody drinks.
• 7:21
Speaker 1: So when you get to the as you wish, why.
• 7:23
Speaker 2: You were so sober in college? Now I understand.
• 7:25
Speaker 3: Look, when you get to the as you wishes? Yeah,
• 7:27
Speaker 3: everyone can get them. So they're all socials and it
• 7:30
Speaker 3: is a fun game. My problem is I know just
• 7:33
Speaker 3: about every line from the movie, but I'll screw them
• 7:35
Speaker 3: up slightly, so I end up kind of getting myself
• 7:37
Speaker 3: because I try an awful lot of them. But is
• 7:40
Speaker 3: an exquisite movie. I probably watched The Princess Bride, I
• 7:43
Speaker 3: don't know, a couple hundred times. No way, it is fantastic.
• 7:46
Speaker 3: So that's number one on your list, far and away.
• 7:50
Speaker 3: Number two on my list is The Godfather Saga.
• 7:52
Speaker 1: Couldn't agree with you more. One of the best series
• 7:55
  Speaker 1: ever made period.
• 7:56
Speaker 3: And I'm not gonna break it down between one, two
• 7:59
Speaker 3: and three been like three, which is a bit of
• 8:01
Speaker 3: a heretical idea. I think three stands on its own
• 8:05
Speaker 3: as its own movie. The least that three only makes
• 8:09
Speaker 3: sense in conjunction with one and two.
• 8:11
Speaker 2: Which is when you're in the club.
• 8:13
Speaker 1: I kind of like that, like you can't fake it
• 8:15
Speaker 1: and go see number three and and think oh that
• 8:18
  Speaker 1: was incredible.
• 8:19
Speaker 2: You have to be in it.
• 8:20
Speaker 3: And look, I quote all of them all the time,
• 8:23
Speaker 3: you know, from three. Every time I get out, they
• 8:25
Speaker 3: keep pulling me back in. I will say it was
• 8:28
Speaker 3: a little depressing with with with my team where I turned.
• 8:32
Speaker 3: You know, senate staffers are all children.
• 8:35
  Speaker 4: You know, your.
• 8:35
Speaker 3: Average to put that on a T shirt, your average
• 8:38
Speaker 3: senate staffer is like twenty three, twenty four, twenty five.
• 8:42
Speaker 3: So so things like Godfather quotes they just don't get.
• 8:45
Speaker 3: And so I I said something. I said, you know,
• 8:50
Speaker 3: this is the business we have chosen. And like everyone
• 8:52
Speaker 3: looked at me confused, and I said, okay, I'd like
• 8:55
Speaker 3: six staffers there. I said, all right, do any of
• 8:57
Speaker 3: you have any idea what I'm saying. They're all like no, no, no.
• 9:01
Speaker 1: I said, okay, this is Godfather too, and and and
• 9:05
Speaker 1: this is a conversation between him and Roth, who is
• 9:08
Speaker 1: clearly modeled after Meyer Lanski, him and Roth and and
• 9:12
Speaker 1: Michael Corleone, and they're down in Miami and Hyman Roth
• 9:15
  Speaker 1: goes Michael.
• 9:17
  Speaker 3: I had a friend. I had a friend since childhood,
• 9:20
Speaker 3: Moe Green was his name. And one day somebody put
• 9:24
Speaker 3: a bullet in his eye. I did not ask who
• 9:28
Speaker 3: was responsible. I did not seek retribution. I said, this
• 9:36
Speaker 3: is the business we have chosen. None of them had
• 9:38
Speaker 3: any idea what I was talking about.
• 9:40
Speaker 2: Team building night in the Senate. You should totally, you
• 9:42
Speaker 2: should totally bring him in one, two and.
• 9:44
  Speaker 1: Three nine hours.
• 9:45
Speaker 2: Yes, this is what you're gonna do. That's team building one.
• 9:48
Speaker 1: On Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Wednesday. Are favorite line from any
• 9:53
Speaker 1: of the Godfather is the best one? Mine's the Canoli.
• 9:56
Speaker 4: Leave, leave the gun and take the Cannolic?
• 9:58
Speaker 2: Yeah, no brainer. Number three on your list Scarface? Really?
• 10:03
Speaker 3: Oh, I love me some Scarface. Why notice Pacino has
• 10:07
Speaker 3: two spots in my top three here? I like Pacina, Okay,
• 10:11
Speaker 3: I love crime movies and look Scarface. Stony Montani's Cuban.
• 10:15
Speaker 3: I'm Cuban. It's you know, it is larger than life.
• 10:20
Speaker 3: I can quote a lot of lines from it to
• 10:22
Speaker 3: be honest, I'm not going to because they're pretty off
• 10:25
Speaker 3: color and I'm going to avoid putting out on the
• 10:27
Speaker 3: podcast some of the language from it.
• 10:30
Speaker 4: But uh, it is so crime genre is your thing,
• 10:35
Speaker 4: and I like Pacino.
• 10:36
  Speaker 2: Yeah, he's amazing.
• 10:37
Speaker 3: So my favorite TV show is Criminal Minds. I love
• 10:40
  Speaker 3: Criminal Minds.
• 10:41
Speaker 1: I'm actually shocked by that one because if there was
• 10:44
Speaker 1: only one box that I can take with me my
• 10:46
Speaker 1: whole life, like if I was stuck on it as
• 10:48
Speaker 1: a island, it'd be West Wing.
• 10:50
Speaker 3: West Wing is fabulous. I've watched every episode of West Wing.
• 10:52
Speaker 3: I've watched every episode of Criminal Minds. But Criminal Minds
• 10:55
Speaker 3: is I just find it fascinating. Heidi hates it, by
• 10:57
Speaker 3: the way. When Criminal Minds is on, She's like, turn
• 10:59
Speaker 3: that garbage off because you know you've got evil, vicious murderers.
• 11:02
Speaker 3: I'm like, no, no, they're the bad guys though, it's all
• 11:04
  Speaker 3: about stopping them.
• 11:05
Speaker 1: But she just doesn't like that. In the house all right.
• 11:08
Speaker 1: Number four Fletch. Never seen it.
• 11:11
Speaker 3: You've never seen Fletch. Go home tonight and watch Fletch.
• 11:17
Speaker 3: It may be the funniest movie ever made.
• 11:19
  Speaker 2: Really.
• 11:20
Speaker 3: Chevy Chase plays Irwin Fletcher, an undercover investigative reporter. It
• 11:26
  Speaker 3: is absolutely hysterical.
• 11:27
Speaker 2: You know, you love chevy Chase, so that's it's.
• 11:30
Speaker 3: Chevy Chase's best movie, much better, much better than Lampoon's Vacation,
• 11:35
Speaker 3: much better than and He's done a ton. I love
• 11:37
Speaker 3: chevy Chase, but Fletch is head and shoulders above them all.
• 11:41
Speaker 3: You know Grant who heads up my security detail. Grant
• 11:45
Speaker 3: and I quote Fletch lines back and forth at each
• 11:48
  Speaker 3: other every week.
• 11:50
Speaker 1: Really is Go and watch the movie. Never seen it?
• 11:53
Speaker 1: It is spectacular, all right, Fletch, I'm on it all right,
• 11:56
Speaker 1: number five amazing Grace also never A lot of people
• 12:01
Speaker 1: have not seen it, but it is a very good.
• 12:03
Speaker 1: It is the true story of William Wilberforce. Now William
• 12:07
Speaker 1: Wilberforce was a Member of Parliament in the United Kingdom
• 12:10
Speaker 1: who led the effort to abolish the slave trade.
• 12:14
Speaker 2: Very cool, is it true?
• 12:15
Speaker 3: Store, true, Store Oka and Wilberforce. So, when he started
• 12:19
Speaker 3: as a young MP, the slave trade was the United
• 12:25
Speaker 3: Kingdom's single greatest source of revenue. It was their business.
• 12:29
Speaker 3: And he begins as this young MP arguing we must
• 12:33
Speaker 3: end the slave trade. It is wrong, it is immoral,
• 12:35
Speaker 3: and everyone laughs at him, and it would be like
• 12:38
Speaker 3: if you were in Texas standing up saying we should
• 12:41
Speaker 3: ban oil and gas.
• 12:42
Speaker 4: I mean, it was that absurd of an idea back then.
• 12:46
Speaker 3: And he spends fifty years battling for it, and the
• 12:49
Speaker 3: movie ends with him successfully championing and passing the legislation
• 12:55
Speaker 3: abolishing the slave trade and shutting down their most lucrative
• 12:59
Speaker 3: business because it was. And by the way, the title
• 13:03
Speaker 3: amazing grace, you know where it comes from. What so
• 13:06
Speaker 3: the person who wrote the hymn amazing Grace was a
• 13:11
Speaker 3: friar who had been the former captain of a slave ship. Really,
• 13:17
Speaker 3: he was the captain of a slave ship. And think
• 13:20
Speaker 3: of the words of the song, amazing grace, amazing grace,
• 13:22
Speaker 3: how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me.
• 13:27
Speaker 3: I once was lost, but now and found, was blind,
• 13:31
Speaker 3: but now I see. And imagine the person writing that
• 13:36
Speaker 3: in that context was the captain of a slave ship.
• 13:38
Speaker 3: Presumably he had murdered people, he had beaten people, he
• 13:42
Speaker 3: had whipped people. He mean, I mean, you think of
• 13:44
Speaker 3: the evil entailed in being the captain of a slave ship,
• 13:49
Speaker 3: and then the amazing grace that that that God offered
• 13:54
Speaker 3: redemption even in the face of the horrific evil. It
• 13:58
Speaker 3: puts a whole different character. The book is by Eric Metaxas,
• 14:03
Speaker 3: who's a fantastic author. Christian author does great biographies. I
• 14:07
Speaker 3: highly recommend Amazing Grace number six. Unforgiven, Never seen it? Oh, Unforgiven?
• 14:14
Speaker 1: Is this is why it makes me laugh when we
• 14:16
Speaker 1: get to do shows like this, because I mean, I
• 14:19
Speaker 1: will go watch these now.
• 14:20
Speaker 3: Okay, so Unforgiven best Western ever made won the Academy
• 14:24
Speaker 3: Award for Best Picture.
• 14:25
Speaker 4: Clint Eastwood is in it.
• 14:27
Speaker 2: I could do an age joke. Here was it in
• 14:29
  Speaker 2: black and white?
• 14:30
  Speaker 1: No?
• 14:30
Speaker 3: No, no, no, it was actually laid Eastwood. You were
• 14:34
Speaker 3: actually out of diapers when it came out.
• 14:35
  Speaker 2: Okay, gotcha.
• 14:37
Speaker 3: Morgan Freeman is in it. Gene Hackman is in it.
• 14:39
Speaker 3: Gene Hackman is spectacular. What's interesting about Unforgiven that is
• 14:44
Speaker 3: so powerful is it turns all of the stereotypes of
• 14:49
Speaker 3: the Western on its head. So, for example, Clint Eastwood
• 14:54
Speaker 3: plays this, this outlaw who had turned over a good
• 14:59
Speaker 3: leaf when was good and then was going back gets hired.
• 15:02
Speaker 3: What happens is a a woman who is a prostitute
• 15:06
Speaker 3: is badly cut up by a drunk cowboy and they
• 15:10
Speaker 3: put out a reward to kill the cowboy who cut
• 15:13
Speaker 3: her up, and Clint Eastwood, as this retired outlaw, needs
• 15:18
Speaker 3: the money and so it is coming to collect the reward,
• 15:21
Speaker 3: and Morgan Freeman, his partner, comes with him. But there's
• 15:24
Speaker 3: a point where where Clint east would you know, there's
• 15:26
Speaker 3: there's a young kid who wants to be a gunslinger
• 15:30
Speaker 3: and and he's like practicing on shooting fast, and like
• 15:32
Speaker 3: Clint Eastwood says, well, you know, for me, this is
• 15:37
Speaker 3: about as fast as I can draw my gun, point it,
• 15:41
Speaker 3: aim at it, pull the trigger, and hit what I'm
• 15:43
Speaker 3: aiming at. And he said, in most firefights, people are
• 15:47
Speaker 3: scared out of their mind and they're just terrified. And
• 15:50
Speaker 3: whoever can kind of calmly engages who wins. And there
• 15:54
Speaker 3: are scenes where like everyone's like, oh crap, and they
• 15:57
Speaker 3: shoot their foot and they drop their gun and they're
• 15:58
Speaker 3: like freaking out and he kind of and he would
• 16:00
Speaker 3: just get drunk and just sort of systematically banged and
• 16:04
Speaker 3: it it really did.
• 16:07
Speaker 1: Invert many of the conventional wisdom.
• 16:10
Speaker 2: Of being a fast draw on everything else.
• 16:12
Speaker 3: And Gene Hackman's character is hysterical. It is he's the
• 16:16
Speaker 3: sheriff who initially you think might be the hero, but
• 16:21
Speaker 3: he very quickly becomes an anti hero. So excellent movie
• 16:27
Speaker 3: number eight. Team America.
• 16:29
Speaker 2: I've actually seen it.
• 16:30
Speaker 3: Hilarious, okay, and I'm going a little edgy, So Team America,
• 16:33
Speaker 3: Team America, World Police.
• 16:35
  Speaker 4: It's a puppet movie.
• 16:36
Speaker 1: I remember when it came out, I was in shock,
• 16:38
Speaker 1: but I was dying laughing. So Heidi didn't like movies
• 16:41
Speaker 1: very much. I took Heidi to see it. She almost
• 16:43
Speaker 1: fell to the floor laughing.
• 16:45
Speaker 2: So she y'all clicked on that.
• 16:46
Speaker 3: It is screamingly funny. Now it makes fun of both sides.
• 16:50
Speaker 3: It makes fun of Republicans, Democrats, everything. It's the guys
• 16:53
Speaker 3: who do South Park who did it? It is puppets.
• 16:59
Speaker 2: They're truly opportunity offender.
• 17:01
  Speaker 4: It is now.
• 17:01
Speaker 3: I'm gonna give a warning. Every third word is a profanity.
• 17:05
Speaker 3: If you're offended by profanity, skip this suggestion. I will say,
• 17:10
Speaker 3: when we were fairly newlyweds, we went on vacation with
• 17:13
Speaker 3: with Heidie's parents down at Lake Powell, which is fabulous,
• 17:16
Speaker 3: and and and we brought it with us and we
• 17:19
Speaker 3: sort of like Heidi and I remember, this is really,
• 17:21
Speaker 3: really funny, and I think we didn't quite remember that
• 17:24
Speaker 3: every third word is a profanity. And I'm sitting there
• 17:27
Speaker 3: with Heidie's parents as we're listening to the blinkety blink
• 17:30
Speaker 3: blink blink, blink blink. We didn't finish the movie, like
• 17:34
Speaker 3: ten minutes into it.
• 17:34
Speaker 2: We just can't believe you brought this in front of
• 17:36
  Speaker 2: your parents.
• 17:37
Speaker 3: Right, yeah, it was, but it's still funny as I'll
• 17:41
Speaker 3: get it, all right.
• 17:43
Speaker 1: Next movie, Patten, yep, amazing, amazing movie. I've watched Patton
• 17:48
Speaker 1: probably five six times in my life. All Right, do
• 17:50
Speaker 1: you know what I did before every Supreme Court argument
• 17:52
Speaker 1: I ever did? Well, I can figure it out now
• 17:54
Speaker 1: you watch Patten, not the whole thing, just which see
• 17:57
Speaker 1: the opening speech, okay, yeah, just the opening speed George C.
• 18:00
Speaker 3: Scott in front of the gigantic flag, standing up and saying, men,
• 18:06
Speaker 3: the objective is not to give your life for your country.
• 18:10
Speaker 3: The objective is to make that other, poor son of
• 18:12
Speaker 3: a bitch give his life for his country.
• 18:14
Speaker 4: I mean I can dig that.
• 18:15
Speaker 2: I can dig that.
• 18:17
Speaker 4: It is sound advice.
• 18:19
Speaker 1: If you can watch that speech and not be inspired,
• 18:22
  Speaker 1: you're dead.
• 18:22
Speaker 4: Yeah, like it is.
• 18:24
Speaker 1: See, those are my weakness movies. I love true stories.
• 18:27
Speaker 1: I love good versus evil movies. I absolutely love sports
• 18:31
Speaker 1: movies as well, but there's always usually a big speech
• 18:33
  Speaker 1: in those.
• 18:34
Speaker 3: By the way, a buddy of mine collects historical military
• 18:37
Speaker 3: equipment and clothing and uniforms, and he has patents dog tags,
• 18:42
Speaker 3: no way, And I actually have worn Patten's dog tags.
• 18:46
Speaker 3: They have rested on my bare chest and I literally
• 18:49
Speaker 3: felt like I was ready to pull out a pistol
• 18:51
Speaker 3: and start shooting in an airplane.
• 18:52
Speaker 1: Like it made you.
• 18:54
Speaker 3: You think about that that actually rested right above the
• 18:58
  Speaker 3: heart of patent.
• 18:59
Speaker 4: That's incredible. That's a good thing to own, all right.
• 19:02
Speaker 1: Next movie, The Sting Classic. Have you seen this?
• 19:05
Speaker 4: You've never seen The Sting.
• 19:06
  Speaker 2: I don't even know. It's about Oh.
• 19:10
Speaker 3: Oh, Benjamin Benjamin Benjamin the Sting, All time classic. Robert Redford,
• 19:14
Speaker 3: Paul Newman, They're they're con men.
• 19:17
Speaker 1: It is this is this is what I can really
• 19:18
Speaker 1: mess with. Wait, Newman does something outside of like SASA.
• 19:22
Speaker 3: It is hysterical, It is beautifully done. Go and watch
• 19:26
Speaker 3: and what's it about. It's about conman, Okay, and it's
• 19:30
Speaker 3: it's worth watching. I probably watched it a hundred times.
• 19:34
Speaker 3: Such a good movie. All right, next movie Awakenings.
• 19:38
Speaker 2: Yes, I've seen that, so Awake. It's only one.
• 19:41
Speaker 3: So Awakenings is fabulous. Robert de Niro, you're a de
• 19:44
Speaker 3: Niro fan. I like de Niro a lot, not a
• 19:47
Speaker 3: fan of his politics, but a big fan of his acting.
• 19:49
Speaker 3: Is a great actor. Although as much de Niro got
• 19:51
Speaker 3: all the acclaim, but I actually thought Robin Williams stole
• 19:54
  Speaker 3: the show.
• 19:55
Speaker 2: I love Rob Williams, so this is what this is
• 19:57
Speaker 2: right at my alley.
• 19:58
Speaker 3: Robin Williams is one of my my all time favorite
• 20:01
Speaker 3: actors ever. I mean, he's an incredible comedic act.
• 20:04
Speaker 2: So you're gonna laugh.
• 20:05
Speaker 1: I was asked a question if you could have dinner with,
• 20:07
Speaker 1: like any five people who would be at your table, living.
• 20:10
Speaker 2: Or alive or dead.
• 20:11
Speaker 1: I had Robin Williams for years in my list because
• 20:14
Speaker 1: I think he's just one of the most brilliant actors
• 20:16
Speaker 1: and genuinely funny human beings.
• 20:18
Speaker 3: So when Robin and Williams passed, I genuinely cried and
• 20:22
Speaker 3: I wrote a long statement about Robin Williams on Facebook
• 20:24
Speaker 3: that I put up, but it just I hammered it
• 20:26
Speaker 3: out of my iPad because he he is so funny
• 20:30
Speaker 3: his stand up If you've ever watched his stand up.
• 20:32
Speaker 2: Routine golf, yeah, I've watched it.
• 20:35
Speaker 3: The one on golf is again profane language, but as
• 20:39
Speaker 3: funny as anything that has ever been said, like screamingly funny. Awakenings,
• 20:44
Speaker 3: the portrayal he gives. I actually like Robin Williams even
• 20:47
Speaker 3: better in dramatic performances than comedy. And he's one of
• 20:50
Speaker 3: the funniest human beings ever alive. So Awakening on the list, Yes, fabulous,
• 20:57
Speaker 3: all right. The next two I viewed again, Brave Heart
• 21:02
  Speaker 3: and Gladiator.
• 21:03
Speaker 1: Both amazing, no brainers, incredible and mel Gibson Russell Crowe right, yes,
• 21:10
Speaker 1: back to back. How can you get that wrong?
• 21:12
Speaker 3: And both standing and fighting and fighting against oppression and
• 21:19
Speaker 3: their epic epic movies. Again, if you're not inspired by them,
• 21:24
Speaker 3: you're dead, I will say, Mike Lee, there's an app
• 21:28
Speaker 3: where you couldn't can put yourself you speaking into an
• 21:35
Speaker 3: audio clip. And he and I used to send things
• 21:38
Speaker 3: back and forth. And you know, at the end, when
• 21:41
Speaker 3: mel Gibson is being executed, he screams freedom. So Mike
• 21:47
Speaker 3: would send me videos of him screaming to mel Gibson's
• 21:51
Speaker 3: voice Freedom. It was pretty powerful, all right. Next, Beverly
• 21:57
  Speaker 3: Hills Cop.
• 21:58
Speaker 2: Hands down one of the funniest movies ever.
• 22:01
Speaker 1: Just screamingly funny. Eddie Murphy, You're gonna laugh. I consider
• 22:04
Speaker 1: that a Christmas movie because it's like days off. I
• 22:07
Speaker 1: want to watch the classic. I watch that.
• 22:09
Speaker 4: It is every moment of it.
• 22:11
Speaker 3: Eddie Murphy remains one of my favorite actors of all times.
• 22:14
  Speaker 1: I he's got a new one coming out, a sequel
• 22:17
Speaker 1: coming out on Amazon. I think it's on Amazon Prime.
• 22:20
Speaker 1: Did you see that recently? I just saw it this
• 22:22
Speaker 1: last week. I don't know which one it was, but
• 22:24
  Speaker 1: they were teasing.
• 22:25
Speaker 3: Yes, they're doing and Beverly Hills Cop too, Okay, is
• 22:27
Speaker 3: that what it is or three?
• 22:29
  Speaker 2: Yeah?
• 22:29
Speaker 3: But look, the original Beverly Hills Cop is screamingly funny.
• 22:33
Speaker 3: And I actually have three Eddie Murphy movies in a
• 22:36
Speaker 3: row because I love Eddie Murphy. Beverly Hills Cop, Trading Places, Yes,
• 22:40
Speaker 3: and Coming to America.
• 22:42
Speaker 1: So Coming America is one of the first movies that
• 22:44
Speaker 1: was like really edgy that I remember, like in my
• 22:46
  Speaker 1: adolescent sing hilarious.
• 22:49
Speaker 3: Again, screamingly funny, and Eddie Murphy and our Sinel Hall
• 22:52
Speaker 3: and they play multiple characters at all the different you
• 22:55
Speaker 3: know in the barbershop, when you have Eddie Murphy in
• 22:58
Speaker 3: ar Sanuel Hall, going back and forth.
• 22:59
  Speaker 4: I mean, it's.
• 23:00
Speaker 3: Amazingly And you know what, they probably wouldn't let you
• 23:02
Speaker 3: make that movie today because it gets racially edgy in
• 23:06
Speaker 3: a way that like now you know, the woke world.
• 23:09
Speaker 4: No no, you can't laugh about that. No no, no, no, no you can't.
• 23:12
Speaker 4: You can't. You can't have any of that humor. By
• 23:14
  Speaker 4: the way.
• 23:14
Speaker 3: You want funny humor, go back to young Eddie Murphy
• 23:18
Speaker 3: on SNL when he was like nineteen years old, brilliant
• 23:22
Speaker 3: and just edgy, comedic like brilliance.
• 23:26
  Speaker 4: I love.
• 23:28
Speaker 3: He's by far my favorite character ever on SNL was
• 23:31
Speaker 3: Young Eddie Murphy because it was just so funny.
• 23:34
  Speaker 2: I like it.
• 23:35
Speaker 1: Mine's Farley by the way, Look he was he was
• 23:38
Speaker 1: great and he put his hole into it. Yeah, I mean,
• 23:41
Speaker 1: you know, I also love that man and a little jacket,
• 23:45
Speaker 1: that man down by the river. I mean, but I
• 23:47
Speaker 1: also love like comedy when there's people falling over.
• 23:50
Speaker 2: And he could do that.
• 23:52
Speaker 4: His physical comedy was incredible.
• 23:55
  Speaker 1: All right.
• 23:55
Speaker 3: Next on the list, Wall Street, Yep, just all time
• 23:59
Speaker 3: go and Gecko one of the great all time classics.
• 24:03
Speaker 3: By the way, a line that I quote frequently. Gordon
• 24:06
Speaker 3: Gecko is in the locker room getting cleaned up after
• 24:11
Speaker 3: playing racquetball and he turns to Charlie Sheen and he goes,
• 24:15
Speaker 3: I'm on the board of the Bronx Zoo. Cost me
• 24:18
Speaker 3: a million bucks. That's the thing about wasps love animals,
• 24:23
  Speaker 3: hate people.
• 24:25
Speaker 4: There's some insight there.
• 24:26
Speaker 2: There is some insight there for sure.
• 24:28
Speaker 4: Hidden figures. Yes, wonderful movie.
• 24:32
Speaker 3: Incredible movie about the African American female mathematicians who were
• 24:38
Speaker 3: foundational to America going to the Moon. And for me,
• 24:42
Speaker 3: there are two kind of personal reasons why that movie
• 24:45
Speaker 3: is significant to me.
• 24:47
Speaker 2: Well, it's got to be because of Houston.
• 24:49
Speaker 3: Well, when we went to see the movie, I took
• 24:51
Speaker 3: my mother to the movie. I took Heidi to the movie.
• 24:53
Speaker 3: I took both my daughters to the movie. And it
• 24:56
Speaker 3: was interesting my girls. It was the first time they'd
• 24:58
Speaker 3: seen a movie that had segregated.
• 25:00
Speaker 1: Yeah, the bathroom is the one of the most iconic
• 25:03
Speaker 1: scenes in that whole movie.
• 25:04
Speaker 3: And it led to I had a long conversation with
• 25:06
Speaker 3: both of them and they were like, well, why would
• 25:08
Speaker 3: people have done that? And to talk about segregation and
• 25:11
Speaker 3: civil rights and just sort of walk through the history
• 25:13
Speaker 3: of it. It prompted really good conversations with my girls.
• 25:18
Speaker 3: But secondly, so my mom. My mom graduated from Rice
• 25:23
Speaker 3: in nineteen fifty six and she had a math degree,
• 25:26
Speaker 3: and she went to work as a computer programmer at Shell.
• 25:30
Speaker 3: She subsequently went to work at the Smithsonian. And remember
• 25:34
Speaker 3: the movie Hidden Figures begins with Sputnik being launched and
• 25:37
Speaker 3: sort of the space race being beginning. One of my
• 25:41
Speaker 3: mother's first assignments at the Smithsonian was to help compute
• 25:45
Speaker 3: the orbits of Sputnik. And so in front of the girls,
• 25:49
Speaker 3: I asked my mom. I said, Mom, you were doing this,
• 25:51
Speaker 3: and in fact, you were doing it ten years earlier.
• 25:53
Speaker 3: You were doing it in the fifties. Hidden Figures is
• 25:56
Speaker 3: set in the sixties, and I said, how accurate is it?
• 25:59
Speaker 3: And my mother, I thought it was very accurate. That
• 26:01
Speaker 3: it did a really good job of conveying what it
• 26:04
Speaker 3: was like to be a woman in space and science
• 26:08
Speaker 3: and in a technical environment. And I commented to her,
• 26:12
Speaker 3: I said, okay, one of the strange things to a
• 26:18
Speaker 3: more modern ear is that they referred to the women
• 26:22
Speaker 3: there as computers. Yeah, and we think of a computer
• 26:25
Speaker 3: as a piece of metal.
• 26:26
Speaker 1: But they were actually called computers because they were actually
• 26:29
  Speaker 1: doing the math.
• 26:30
Speaker 3: And my mother started laughing at me and she said
• 26:32
Speaker 3: her first job title was computer and when she started
• 26:37
Speaker 3: at Shell, she had a business card that said eleanor.
• 26:39
Speaker 4: Dearra computer No Way.
• 26:42
  Speaker 1: And so.
• 26:44
Speaker 3: In response to that, I introduced legislation to rename the
• 26:48
Speaker 3: street in front of NASA headquarters Hidden Figures Way. And
• 26:52
Speaker 3: this is actually a really cool story. I introduced that
• 26:54
Speaker 3: legislation before it could pass, and we would have gotten
• 26:58
Speaker 3: it passed, but a DC City councilman saw that legislation
• 27:02
Speaker 3: and said, you know what, that's a great idea. And
• 27:05
Speaker 3: the DC City councilman introduced it in the DC City council.
• 27:08
Speaker 3: Guy's a Democrat, and he got it passed. So the
• 27:11
Speaker 3: DC City Council passes.
• 27:13
  Speaker 2: It's cool.
• 27:14
Speaker 3: So I went to the street signed dedication and that
• 27:16
Speaker 3: that is the street sign there, and I was there,
• 27:18
Speaker 3: I spoke at the denawary it it is the headquarters
• 27:21
Speaker 3: of NASA in DC, and so NASA, the address of
• 27:25
Speaker 3: NASA is one Hidden Figure's Way. And so I spoke
• 27:28
Speaker 3: of the dedication the DC City councilman spoke, and he's
• 27:30
  Speaker 3: a Democrat.
• 27:31
  Speaker 4: I'm a Republican.
• 27:32
Speaker 3: And I told the story of my mom, which was
• 27:34
Speaker 3: really cool to get to tell, and I said, look,
• 27:37
Speaker 3: at some level, you might say, listen, the street sign's
• 27:40
  Speaker 3: not that big.
• 27:40
Speaker 2: A deal, that one is.
• 27:42
Speaker 3: But at another level, you know, fifty years from now,
• 27:44
Speaker 3: one hundred years from now, some little girl some little
• 27:48
Speaker 3: boy is going to come visit NASA and they're gonna
• 27:50
Speaker 3: look up and see the street sign and they're gonna say, hey,
• 27:53
Speaker 3: what does that mean? And they're going to hear the
• 27:56
Speaker 3: story of the pioneering African American women who were the
• 28:00
Speaker 3: mathematicians that got us to the moon. And so it's
• 28:03
Speaker 3: where movies and stories are powerful.
• 28:06
Speaker 1: Did any of the characters of the movie? Did any
• 28:09
Speaker 1: of them get to come to.
• 28:09
Speaker 3: That that they had passed by the time we did that?
• 28:12
Speaker 3: So no, all right, we just got a few more.
• 28:15
Speaker 1: Schindler's List one of the hardest movies to watch.
• 28:19
  Speaker 4: Yes.
• 28:20
Speaker 1: The other one is that I can I've only watched
• 28:23
Speaker 1: it one time because I just can't ring myself to
• 28:24
  Speaker 1: watch it again.
• 28:25
  Speaker 2: Is Lone Survivor.
• 28:27
Speaker 1: Those two movies to me are must sees, But I
• 28:31
  Speaker 1: just I don't know if it's because I've become a
• 28:32
Speaker 1: dad and having kids now and watching the kids, I
• 28:36
Speaker 1: just can't watch them like I used to.
• 28:38
Speaker 3: So, as you know, a couple of weeks ago, I
• 28:41
Speaker 3: was at Normandy for the eightieth anniversary of D Day,
• 28:43
Speaker 3: and wildly enough I got to meet Steven Spielberg and
• 28:46
Speaker 3: Tom Hanks, which was really cool, and I had pretty
• 28:50
Speaker 3: extended conversations with both of them, and they've done Look,
• 28:52
Speaker 3: their politics are both left of center, but they've done
• 28:55
Speaker 3: an amazing job really honoring and telling the stories of
• 28:58
Speaker 3: the greatest generation, whether saving Private Ryan, whether Band of Brothers,
• 29:03
Speaker 3: whether the Pacific and so we're talking about that. And
• 29:07
Speaker 3: I was talking with Spielberg about about Schindler's List and
• 29:11
Speaker 3: just you know, talking with the heroes the World War
• 29:15
Speaker 3: Two heroes who almost all say, well, I could have
• 29:17
Speaker 3: done more. I could have done more, and the real
• 29:20
Speaker 3: heroes are under those crosses behind us. And I was
• 29:25
Speaker 3: telling Spielberg, I said, hearing them say that reminds me
• 29:28
Speaker 3: of the end of Schindler's List, where Oscar Schindler is like,
• 29:32
Speaker 3: I could have done more, and he looks down at
• 29:34
Speaker 3: his gold watch and he said, this watch this watch
• 29:36
Speaker 3: could have saved three more people. Three more people are
• 29:39
Speaker 3: dead because I kept my watch. And you think about
• 29:43
Speaker 3: the heroism of his rescuing Jews from the Nazis and
• 29:46
Speaker 3: the incredible courage, But at the same time, the like
• 29:50
Speaker 3: why didn't I do even more? And that, to me
• 29:53
Speaker 3: is the most beautiful moment of that movie is the
• 29:56
Speaker 3: sort of did I do enough?
• 29:58
  Speaker 2: Yeah?
• 30:00
Speaker 3: Okay, I'm gonna take a detour, a detour to the
• 30:04
  Speaker 3: world of musicals.
• 30:06
Speaker 4: So I like musicals.
• 30:07
Speaker 2: Do you like Broadway?
• 30:09
Speaker 4: I do. I love Broadway absolutely.
• 30:11
Speaker 1: So like you, if you go to New York, you
• 30:12
Speaker 1: would put it on your list to go see a show.
• 30:14
Speaker 4: I love Broadway, and I'm gonna have four musicals on here.
• 30:17
  Speaker 2: I'm ready.
• 30:18
Speaker 3: So number one is is my father's favorite movie of
• 30:21
Speaker 3: all time, which is My Fair Lady.
• 30:23
Speaker 4: Okay, and My Fair Lady is fantastic.
• 30:26
Speaker 2: I've seen it because of my mom and my sister
• 30:28
  Speaker 2: multiple times.
• 30:30
  Speaker 4: English.
• 30:30
Speaker 3: I've never watched that he's got of children how to speak,
• 30:35
Speaker 3: Norwegians learn, Norwegians. The Greeks are taught their Greek.
• 30:39
  Speaker 2: See.
• 30:39
Speaker 1: This is why I said this show would be entertaining,
• 30:41
  Speaker 1: because I would.
• 30:42
Speaker 2: Have never thought you were musical.
• 30:44
Speaker 4: It is spec favorite Broadway sh you've ever been to.
• 30:47
Speaker 4: I'm gonna get to that, Okay, go ahea, I'm gonna
• 30:48
Speaker 4: get to that. So the second one there is Oliver Yep.
• 30:53
  Speaker 2: Great.
• 30:54
Speaker 3: Oliver is spectacular. So look, I was in high school.
• 30:57
Speaker 3: I was president of drama club.
• 30:59
Speaker 2: I have way too many one liners, but I'll leave
• 31:01
Speaker 2: that for another show.
• 31:01
  Speaker 1: Keep going.
• 31:02
Speaker 3: You were captain of the tennis team. I was president
• 31:04
Speaker 3: of drama club. Okay, I get that. There's a reason
• 31:07
Speaker 3: why you would have stuck me in the locker. If
• 31:09
  Speaker 3: you yes, that.
• 31:10
Speaker 2: Would have that would have gotten you a SmackDown for sure.
• 31:12
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 31:13
Speaker 3: But so look, I I all politicians are frustrated actors.
• 31:17
Speaker 3: It's just it's just part of the the It is oh, yes,
• 31:22
  Speaker 3: a lot.
• 31:22
Speaker 2: What were you in?
• 31:23
  Speaker 4: So I did?
• 31:24
Speaker 2: Do we have eight tracks of this or what what
• 31:26
Speaker 2: was it? Beta camp?
• 31:28
  Speaker 4: There?
• 31:29
Speaker 1: They may be somewhere. Okay, So let's see. I've done
• 31:32
Speaker 1: Sound of Music twice.
• 31:33
  Speaker 2: What'd you play?
• 31:34
Speaker 1: So I played? The first time, I played Rolf yeah uh.
• 31:38
Speaker 3: You know, and I warbled out you are sixteen going
• 31:41
Speaker 3: on seventeen, no way, And then the second time I
• 31:44
Speaker 3: played Max Yep. I also so I did Oliver, and
• 31:51
Speaker 3: Oliver is a fabulous classic. So Oliver was my senior year,
• 31:55
Speaker 3: and the head of the music department told me, hey,
• 31:57
Speaker 3: we're doing Oliver next year, and he said, you know,
• 31:59
Speaker 3: I'd love to have you play Fagan if you can
• 32:02
  Speaker 3: sing it.
• 32:04
Speaker 4: And and my curse. Look, I'm a terrible singer.
• 32:06
Speaker 3: I cannot carry save in a bucket like like I
• 32:11
Speaker 3: wish I could I have you were not hearing.
• 32:15
  Speaker 4: It.
• 32:15
Speaker 3: And so I actually went and for like six months
• 32:18
Speaker 3: I took voice lessons to try to get be able
• 32:21
Speaker 3: to sing that Fagan is such a thing.
• 32:23
Speaker 2: Did you get any better in the six months?
• 32:25
  Speaker 1: A little bit?
• 32:26
Speaker 4: And so what happened?
• 32:27
Speaker 3: And the nice thing about Fagan is is Fagan's songs
• 32:35
Speaker 3: are more spoken than sang. So, for example, the song
• 32:41
  Speaker 3: reviewing the situation, a man's got a hot isn't he
• 32:47
  Speaker 3: joking apart?
• 32:49
  Speaker 1: Hasn't he?
• 32:51
Speaker 3: And though I'd be the first to admit that I
• 32:53
Speaker 3: wasn't a saint, I'm finding it hard to be really
• 32:57
  Speaker 3: as bad.
• 32:58
Speaker 2: So here I see you Dad, next, I'm gonna say
• 32:59
Speaker 2: there six months is worth it now right.
• 33:01
Speaker 3: I'm viewing the situation Can a fellow be a villain
• 33:08
Speaker 3: all his life, all the trials to settle down and
• 33:14
Speaker 3: get myself a wife.
• 33:17
  Speaker 2: And you remember.
• 33:19
Speaker 3: I will cook and sew for you, and come for you,
• 33:22
Speaker 3: and go for you, and go for you, and nagget
• 33:24
  Speaker 3: you the finger.
• 33:25
Speaker 1: She will wag at you. How many tickets they sell for?
• 33:28
Speaker 1: This is what I really want to know.
• 33:29
Speaker 4: So I prepared that song was one.
• 33:34
Speaker 3: Now it's mostly spoken, it's not release, so I could
• 33:37
Speaker 3: do it marginally competently after six months practicing. I did
• 33:41
Speaker 3: that at the trio and then and then afterwards music
• 33:45
Speaker 3: director said, hey, Ted, stick around, and he went to
• 33:47
Speaker 3: the piano and he said sing this, and he went
• 33:50
  Speaker 3: and I went.
• 33:52
Speaker 1: And he did it like three times. He goes, Okay,
• 33:55
Speaker 1: damn it not happening. So I was cast as Bill Sykes.
• 33:58
Speaker 1: It's the second male lead with no singing. Yeah, it's
• 34:02
Speaker 1: a fun role. You're the villain.
• 34:03
Speaker 3: You get to like beat up Oliver, twist and like
• 34:05
  Speaker 3: you're but but I wanted.
• 34:09
Speaker 4: I wanted to play that.
• 34:10
Speaker 3: Role badly, and I did not get it all right.
• 34:14
Speaker 3: Two more musicals. Hamilton, which is utterly exquisite. I've seen
• 34:22
Speaker 3: it multiple times. It is brilliant, it is beautiful, it
• 34:26
Speaker 3: is powerful. My girls know the songs. There are few
• 34:29
Speaker 3: things that make me happier than when my daughters are
• 34:31
Speaker 3: singing songs from Hamilton. I mean it was there was
• 34:35
Speaker 3: a period where they were obsessed with it.
• 34:36
Speaker 2: You and I were talking about this the other day.
• 34:37
Speaker 1: My dad I took him to New York for the
• 34:39
Speaker 1: first time ever for seventh birthday, and and you said,
• 34:41
Speaker 1: did you go see a show? And I was like,
• 34:43
Speaker 1: do you want to see Hamilton? He's like, I'd rather
• 34:45
Speaker 1: go the Yankees game. And then the next night I
• 34:47
Speaker 1: was like, we just that I'd rather have a nice meal.
• 34:49
Speaker 1: I tried hard. I tried to give him to Hamilton.
• 34:51
Speaker 1: It just wasn't on the list. And then my favorite
• 34:53
Speaker 1: music of all time is le Miss really, and I
• 34:56
Speaker 1: love le Miss I think, do you get choked out?
• 34:59
Speaker 1: Be honest, because I'm a sucker for this. I get
• 35:02
Speaker 1: I get the lump in the rooked up, all right?
• 35:03
Speaker 1: So what song gets you choked up? Oh? The one
• 35:06
Speaker 1: the most famous? I'm terrible with it. It's the one
• 35:08
Speaker 1: that Anne Hathaway does. It's so good. Oh and she
• 35:12
Speaker 1: won won the Academy Awards for every Time it gets me?
• 35:15
Speaker 4: So that is beautiful.
• 35:16
Speaker 3: I'll tell you that the two that get me choked
• 35:19
Speaker 3: up are number one, when Jean Valjean is saying let
• 35:23
Speaker 3: him live, yep, and he's looking down and he says,
• 35:27
Speaker 3: you know, if I die, that one's InCred me die.
• 35:31
Speaker 4: Yeah, let him live.
• 35:33
Speaker 3: And it's a prayer to God to let him live
• 35:37
Speaker 3: every time. I have tears every time. Then the other
• 35:40
  Speaker 3: one that gets.
• 35:41
Speaker 1: Me is the song empty chairs and empty tables at
• 35:44
Speaker 1: the end when everyone has died. And I will confess
• 35:48
Speaker 1: at the end of the presidential campaign in twenty sixteen,
• 35:51
Speaker 1: as I walked through the empty campaign office and I
• 35:53
Speaker 1: saw the empty chairs and empty tables, I heard.
• 35:57
Speaker 4: That sphrames of that song.
• 36:00
Speaker 1: Uh so le miz is exquisite, all.
• 36:05
Speaker 3: Right, by the way, when I was all right, So
• 36:08
Speaker 3: nineteen ninety three, I was just finished my first year
• 36:11
Speaker 3: of law school, and I had a job in New York.
• 36:13
Speaker 3: I was working a law firm in New York for
• 36:15
Speaker 3: the summer, and I decided to fly my mom to
• 36:19
Speaker 3: New York for the weekend. And so it's nineteen ninety three.
• 36:22
Speaker 3: So I actually fedexed a plane ticket. And this is
• 36:25
Speaker 3: back when a plane ticket was a piece of cardboard. Yeah,
• 36:27
Speaker 3: I fedexed a plane ticket to her with nothing else.
• 36:30
Speaker 3: It was literally she opened the FedEx package and just
• 36:32
Speaker 3: a plane ticket to New York fell out and she
• 36:34
Speaker 3: called me and she's like, Ted, I assume this is you.
• 36:36
Speaker 3: I said, yeah, I had no note, no nothing, just
• 36:38
Speaker 3: a plane ticket and the FedEx thing.
• 36:39
Speaker 2: Get on the plane. I'll see you soon, mom.
• 36:41
Speaker 3: So I fleir in New York and we went out
• 36:43
Speaker 3: to dinner at Boult, which at the time was the
• 36:45
Speaker 3: nicest restaurant in New York. Was fabulous, And then I
• 36:48
Speaker 3: took her one night to see Camelot, which was really
• 36:51
Speaker 3: fun yep, and then the next night.
• 36:52
Speaker 4: To see Lemiz And did she love it?
• 36:54
Speaker 1: She loved it, and it I that's one of those
• 36:57
Speaker 1: ironed memories for rest of your life.
• 36:59
  Speaker 4: Yeah, I know.
• 36:59
Speaker 3: That's just very cool to go do that. All right,
• 37:04
Speaker 3: So we have a total of three more. I'm gonna
• 37:07
  Speaker 3: say The Magnificent.
• 37:08
Speaker 1: Seven, incredible, watch it ten times, the original one? Yes
• 37:12
Speaker 1: with my dad all right, all right, that's like in
• 37:14
Speaker 1: my dad's like I grew up on John Wayne and
• 37:16
  Speaker 1: war movies.
• 37:17
Speaker 3: Yeah, like Magnificence seven and that was like I remember
• 37:20
Speaker 3: watch then Unforgiven, The Magnificent seven is the greatest Western
• 37:23
Speaker 3: that's actually originally at a Western. I'mforgiven with sort of a
• 37:25
Speaker 3: modern remake format, but Magnificent seven exquisite with you know,
• 37:30
Speaker 3: Yule Brenner and Charles Bronson.
• 37:33
Speaker 2: And that was the mos Coburn. Oh, when mom was
• 37:36
Speaker 2: out of town, that was one of the movies we watched.
• 37:38
Speaker 4: Oh, it was so good.
• 37:39
  Speaker 3: It's it's a fabulous movie. And then I'm gonna end
• 37:42
Speaker 3: with two Quentin Tarantino, is it? The Inglorious Bastards? Is
• 37:47
Speaker 3: that where we're going with this? So I'm gonna start
• 37:49
Speaker 3: with pulp Fiction, which is fantastic, and then the last
• 37:52
Speaker 3: one is in Glorious Bastard.
• 37:53
  Speaker 2: Yep.
• 37:54
Speaker 3: And I feel bad that I left Reservoir Dogs off
• 37:56
Speaker 3: because Reservoir Dogs is exquisite too. But maybe if you
• 38:00
Speaker 3: made me pick two, I go with pulp Fiction and
• 38:03
Speaker 3: Glorious and Glorius Bastards is.
• 38:04
  Speaker 4: A spectacular movie.
• 38:06
Speaker 1: So that's twenty five movies, which if you've got some downtimes,
• 38:11
  Speaker 1: download them.
• 38:12
Speaker 3: Watch them. You will enjoy them. You will laugh, you
• 38:14
Speaker 3: will be moved, you will be.
• 38:16
Speaker 2: And send your critiques on Twitter. We'll take them. And
• 38:19
Speaker 2: let me ask you one of the questions.
• 38:20
Speaker 1: If you can only take one movie and one TV
• 38:23
Speaker 1: series to a desert island with you, what would you pick?
• 38:26
Speaker 2: Only one movie and only one TV series? That's all
• 38:29
Speaker 2: you got to watch.
• 38:30
Speaker 4: The Princess Bride and Criminal Minds.
• 38:32
Speaker 2: There you go, that's it.
• 38:33
Speaker 4: Yeah, I like it.
