- 0:07The St. Louis Cardinals faced the New York Mets at Shea Stadium for a Tuesday night game on May 11, 1965.
- 0:14The Cardinals were the defending champions, having defeated the Yankees in the 1964 World Series.
- 0:19But things were in a bit of turmoil in St. Louis.
- 0:22In August of 1964, the Cardinals were managed by Johnny Keene,
- 0:26and with the Cardinals seemingly out of the race, team owner August Bush became convinced
- 0:30that only a thorough housecleaning of Cardinal management would bring him the pennant that he had craved since he bought the team in 1953.
- 0:37After accepting the resignations of almost every senior St. Louis front office executive,
- 0:41manager Johnny Keene was spared.
- 0:43But Bush was secretly negotiating with Dodgers manager Leo DeRoscher to become the manager for the 1965 season.
- 0:50But the 1964 season wasn't over yet,
- 0:53and the front-running Phillies, who had seemed to lock for the pennant with an eight-game lead on September 1,
- 0:58unexpectedly began to unravel while the Cardinals got hot.
- 1:01With one week to go in the season, Philadelphia came into St. Louis after losing seven straight at home
- 1:06and were subsequently swept by the Cardinals, who notched their eighth straight win and moved into first place.
- 1:12After winning the World Series on October 15, the Cardinals held a press conference the next day.
- 1:17Most people expected that the team would formally announce a contract extension for Keene,
- 1:21but instead Keene handed over a surprise letter of resignation.
- 1:25The Cardinals then decided to bypass DeRoscher entirely,
- 1:28and instead hired longtime favorite Red Shane Deist,
- 1:31a Hall of Fame second baseman and one of Keene's coaches as the club's new manager for the 1965 season.
- 1:37Casey Stengel was still manager of the Mets in 1965, despite three straight seasons of 120, 111, and 109 losses.
- 1:45They tried a new strategy in 1965, which was probably nothing more than a marketing gimmick
- 1:50by adding two legendary 40-year-olds to the roster, Yogi Berra and Warren Spahn.
- 1:55This audio recording is from the New York Radio broadcast featuring announcers Ralph Keiner, Lindsay Nelson, and Bob Murphy.
- 2:25At this point, as Casey was coming out of the gymnasium, he fell on the concrete as he hung his spikes
- 2:30and sustained a broken right wrist.
- 2:34But he says that he's in great shape, and so coming out to present the lineup cards,
- 2:39he took the sling off before he arrived at home place,
- 2:42and he's now going over the ground rules with Ken Boyer, the captain of the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 2:47Cardinals, of course, are the defending world champions.
- 2:50But now on the field, Leonard Coppett, chairman of the Baseball Writers Association of America,
- 2:55New York Chapter, is presenting the Babe Ruth Award to Cardinal pitcher Bob Gibson.
- 3:01Bob was warming up, and he's stop warming up to walk over now and take the plaque from Leonard Coppett.
- 3:08As you know, last year, Bob Gibson won two games and lost one for the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 3:13During the season, he won 19 games. He had a great World Series,
- 3:17and this presentation is being made by the New York Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America
- 3:23on the basis of Bob Gibson's performance in the World Series last year.
- 3:28And now the starting lineups and batting orders for tonight's game.
- 3:31For the Cardinals leading off in playing second base, Phil Gagliano.

- 4:03He is off to a great start.

- 4:09Batting second and playing second base, Ron Hunt.

- 4:54that has to express written consent of the New York Mets is prohibited.
- 5:05Spahn has arrived at the mound, and now, ladies and gentlemen,
- 5:09at the Chase Stadium in New York, our national anthem.
- 5:39.
- 5:43.
- 5:49.
- 5:54.
- 5:59.
- 6:04Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
- 6:17Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
- 6:47Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
- 7:17Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
- 7:48Warren Spahn has beaten the Cardinals more than he has beaten any other club.
- 7:52His lifetime record 63 wins and 29 losses against the Cardinals.
- 7:56Mr. Gagliano is low for a ball.
- 8:10Spahn again, works the pitch.
- 8:13And it's low for a ball, 2-1.
- 8:16Spahn has won 358 games, more than any other left-hand pitcher in the history of the Major League.
- 8:27The 2-1 pitch, swung on it on the ground into left field for a base hit.
- 8:32Taken there by Christopher and played back in and Gagliano turns the nose with a leadoff single.
- 8:37It was drilled on the ground between Klaus and Macmillan.
- 8:40Number 20, left fielder, Lou Brock.
- 8:45Lou Brock is coming up now with an early season batting average of 303.
- 8:49Two home runs and 11 runs batted in.
- 8:51He hit 315 last year with the Cubs and the Cardinals.
- 8:54He was one of the big reasons that the St. Louis Cardinals made their way to the top of the heap in the National League.
- 9:00Then won the World Series in competition with the New York Yankees.
- 9:04Spahn checks Cranepool, holds against the runner at first and hears the pitch.
- 9:09It is bunded down to third base line, taken by Klaus.
- 9:11He guns it across to first in time, a sacrifice, and you score it 5-3.
- 9:20That brings up Kurt Flood, who has been dropped down to the number three spot in the batting order.
- 9:24Flood is hitting 300. He's had four home runs and 16 runs batted in,
- 9:29so there's no particular reason why he shouldn't be hitting down there number three.
- 9:32Normally he hits either leadoff or number two during the spring.
- 9:35Manager Red Sheen, instead of the Cardinals, was batting Flood and Brock sort of interchangeably in the two top spots in the batting order.
- 9:43Flood is a right-hand batter. Spahn checks the runner at second.
- 9:50And the pitch is in there for a call strike.
- 9:55Starting player tonight in the National League, the Los Angeles Dodgers are on top.
- 9:59They have won 17 in last seven. They beat Houston last night.
- 10:02Cincinnati Reds are two and a half games out. They won 14 in last nine.
- 10:06The Houston Astros are three games out. They won 15 in last 11.
- 10:10And the Phillies have won 12 in 11, four and a half games out.
- 10:15Check swing foul ball into the seats and out of play.
- 10:19The St. Louis Cardinals are in eighth place in the National League standings. They won 10 in last 13.
- 10:24Six and a half games behind the league-leading Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 10:28The New York Mets are a game and a half back of the Cardinals.
- 10:32The Mets have won nine and lost 15. They are eight games out of first place.
- 10:36And the Pittsburgh Pirates are in tenth place in the National League standings, a full game behind the New York Mets.
- 10:46Spahn now checks. Two strike delivery to Kurt Flood.
- 10:50A little number fouled off his ankle. It rolls out to the mound where it's taken by Spahn.
- 10:54It's a foul ball and the count holds it two strikes.
- 10:59Full schedule of night action in the National League.
- 11:01Cincinnati is at Philadelphia.
- 11:03Sartoros against Short.
- 11:05Milwaukee is at Pittsburgh.
- 11:07Houston on the coast against the Dodgers.
- 11:09And the Cubs are in San Francisco against the Giants.
- 11:19Right here, one man out and the runner at second.
- 11:22No score, top half of the first inning.
- 11:24Spahn's pitch, low and away for a ball.
- 11:27One and two to Flood.
- 11:30Full schedule of night action in the American League.
- 11:32The Yankees are at Boston.
- 11:33Stoudelmar against Wilson.
- 11:34Detroit's at Washington.
- 11:35Wirtgescham against Kreutzer.
- 11:37Cleveland's at Baltimore.
- 11:38Cherry against Barber.
- 11:39Los Angeles at Minnesota.
- 11:41Kansas City and Chicago, not scheduled.
- 11:45One-two pitch.
- 11:46Let up and it goes high.
- 11:48Two-two.
- 11:50Change of speed by Warren Spahn.
- 11:53Forty-four-year-old pitcher and pitching coach of the New York Mets.
- 12:01On the coaching line for the Cardinals, Joe Schulz is at third base,
- 12:04and Mickey Vernon is on the lines at first.
- 12:09Here now is a two-two delivery, and it's high,
- 12:11so the count goes full to Kurt Flood.
- 12:13With Ken Boyer waiting on deck.
- 12:23Spahn takes a moment now to work on the ball.
- 12:26Beautiful baseball night here at Shea Stadium.
- 12:29Plenty of room for you.
- 12:30If you're in the vicinity, come on out and see the Cardinals and the Mets.
- 12:32They play again tomorrow afternoon.
- 12:34Game time tomorrow, 2 p.m.
- 12:40This is a payoff.
- 12:41It's to Kurt Flood.
- 12:42It hits in the dirt in front of the plate.
- 12:44Ball four.
- 12:45Flood goes to first base with the base on balls.
- 12:48As Warren Spahn was pulling down on that one,
- 12:51and the ball hit in the dirt in front of the plate and was blocked by Countess Arrow.
- 12:54With Gagliano holding at second base.
- 12:58Kenny Boyer coming up.
- 13:01Hitting 280.
- 13:02Two home runs.
- 13:03Eleven runs batted in.
- 13:04Most valuable player in the National League last year.
- 13:08One of seven brothers, all of whom have played or are playing professional baseball.
- 13:29Spahn is up and set.
- 13:32And the pitch.
- 13:34Low for a ball.
- 13:35Taking on a short hop by Chris Countess Arrow.
- 13:38Waiting on that now is Dick Groats.
- 13:44Manager Red Shandinst of the Cardinals was asked about his impressions of Warren Spahn in spring training.
- 13:50The cards and the Mets both train in the city of St. Petersburg.
- 13:54He said the only thing he saw bad about Spahn was his haircut.
- 13:58Here's the 1-0 pitch, and it misses outside for a ball.
- 14:012-0.
- 14:11Mets and the Cardinals see a lot of each other during spring training.
- 14:14They play five exhibition games, and each team plays its exhibition games at Al Lang Field in St. Petersburg.
- 14:21Here's the 2-0 pitch, and it's in for a cause strike.
- 14:242-1 to Ken Boyer, who doubts the call of umpire Augie Donatelli.
- 14:33Boyer had been out of action with a back injury, but returned to the lineup recently.
- 14:41Bill White also had been out, but White's back in the lineup.
- 14:46Cardinals got off to a slow start.
- 14:502-1 pitch, swung on and hit in the air foul on the right field line.
- 14:54Lewis is over, but this one drifts into the seats and out of play, and the count holds at 2-2.
- 15:01Ken Azzaro goes out to the mound now to have a word with Warren Spahn.
- 15:09The Mets opening up this series with the Cardinals after having taken a series from the Milwaukee Braves.
- 15:14The Mets won two of the three games with the Braves.
- 15:21The Mets, of course, had split a series, a two-game series, with the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 15:28So they're 3-2 on the home stand right now.
- 15:352-2 pitch, swung on and hit, he's stuck in the mound.
- 15:41Spahn strikes out Ken Boyer. Jack Liano holds at second, flooded first, two away, and Dick Groat is coming up.
- 15:48Groat is hitting 2-31. He has eight runs batted in.
- 15:551960, when the Pittsburgh Pirates won the National League Finals,
- 15:58Dick Groat was the most valuable player in the National League, and he led the league in batting.
- 16:15Here's a pitch, and it's in for a call from Patrick Groat.
- 16:19Groat came to the Cardinals from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for pitcher Don Cardwell and infielder Julio Gotai.
- 16:31Spahn, yelling something out to Ron, he wants to relay some information out to Johnny Lewis, and he wants to position Lewis back.
- 16:39Well, Spahn, of course, has been in the league long enough to know that Dick Groat's power is to the opposite field.
- 16:45He takes that ball to right field a great deal, and so Spahn wanted Johnny Lewis playing a little deeper in right field.
- 16:52Here's a pitch swung on and popped up into short right, and Hunt goes back, and he's there, and Hunt makes the catch with Lewis just behind him.
- 17:02And so the side is retired, and Ron Hunt made the catch.
- 17:09No runs, one hit, no errors, two left, and the score at the end of a half inning is the Cardinals nothing and the Mets coming to bat.
- 17:17And now it's time for another unusual fact from the Viceroy Hall of Records.
- 17:22Let me tell you about a fellow who played ball back in the 80s.
- 17:25His name was Old Hoss Radford, and in a single season he played first base, second, third, shortstop, and the outfield.
- 17:34And incidentally, he pitched too. Matter of fact, as a pitcher, Old Hoss won 60 games that year.
- 17:40And now here's the story of another winner, Viceroy. Viceroy has got the filter for the taste that's right.
- 17:46If you're a filter smoker and you try smoking all seven leading brands, you'll find some taste too strong as if they didn't even have a filter, and some other brands taste too light.
- 17:56They never seem to satisfy your taste.
- 17:58But you take Viceroy now, Viceroy is not too strong and not too light. Viceroy has got the taste that's right. Right, singers?
- 18:06Viceroy's got the taste that's right, not too strong and not too light, the taste that's right.
- 18:18We're going to the bottom half of the first inning.
- 18:21Bobby Klaus is going up the leadoff for the New York Mets. The Cardinals are on the field with Bill White at first, Bill Gagliano at second, Dick Brody at shortstop, and Ken Boyer at third.
- 18:31Lou Brock is in left field, Kurt Flood is in center, and Mike Shannon is in right. Tim McCarver is the catcher.
- 18:37Bob Gibson with a record of five victories, no losses, three of them shutouts.
- 18:43He finished strong last year, won 19 games for the Cardinals, he won the 19th on the last day of the season when he was the winner in relief over the New York Mets.
- 18:52Pitches in there for a called strike. His last loss of last season was on the last Friday night when the Mets beat him 1-0. Al Jackson was the winning pitcher.
- 19:02Again, Gibson with the pitch, swung on and missed his strike two. Klaus is hitting 1-58, he has one game-winning home run and four runs batted in.
- 19:20Gibson looking for Tim McCarver's side.
- 19:26Pitch is high and away for a ball, 1-2. Tim McCarver had quite a World Series himself, he hit 4-78 with the leading batter in the World Series.
- 19:38Here's a 1-2 pitch, swung on and landed in the center for a face-hit for Bobby Klaus.
- 19:43Guards by Kurt Flood, plays it back in, and Klaus has a lead-off single into center field.
- 19:50That brings up Ron Hut. Ron is hitting 2-81, he has had two doubles and one run batted in.
- 20:08Bob Gibson on the mound tonight for the Cardinals, set a new series record for strikeouts in the World Series with 31, including 13 in the fifth game.
- 20:17That's a figure that's been beaten only twice in all of World Series competition.
- 20:26Off the stretch, Gibson's pitch to Hut is high for a ball.
- 20:30Gibson struck out 245 last season during the regular season, second only in the National League to Pittsburgh's Bob Veale.
- 20:37It was a Cardinal record.
- 20:45Pitch is swung on and fouled out to the right side and out of play.
- 20:48A 1-1 count to Ron Hut with Johnny Lewis waiting on deck.
- 20:52Yogi Berra is on the coaching lines at first base for the Mets, and Don Hefner is the Met coach at third.
- 21:13Now the pitch, swung on and on the ground is short. Could be a double play.
- 21:16Grote across to Gagliano for one to throw the first to double play.
- 21:20It goes 6-4-3 if you're scoring. Two away, nobody on base, and Johnny Lewis coming up.
- 21:26Enjoy the game with the Viceroy. Viceroy has got the filter for the taste that's right.
- 21:34Johnny Lewis, who came to the Mets from the St. Louis Cardinals, is hitting 2-61 home run and eight runs batted in.
- 21:40At this time last year, Johnny Lewis was the regular right fielder for the Cardinals.
- 21:44Swings and hits the ground ball to second. Gagliano takes it, plays on to white and the side is out.
- 21:49No runs, one hit, no errors, none left, and the score at the end of a full inning is the Cardinals nothing and the Mets nothing.
- 21:58The Cardinals will be here tomorrow afternoon. Thursday is an off day.
- 22:02And then the Mets are here Friday night against the Cincinnati Reds. Saturday afternoon against the Reds.
- 22:06And a big Sunday doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds to close out the current homestand.
- 22:11Tickets are now on sale for any or all of those games, as well as all home games to be played by the Mets here at Shea Stadium this season.
- 22:18The advance ticket window at Shea Stadium is open seven days a week. It's open weekdays from 8 to 6 and weekends from 9 to 5.
- 22:25The Met ticket office at Pennsylvania Station is located in the Long Island Railroad waiting room, and it's open weekdays from 8 to 6 and Saturdays 8.30 to 4.
- 22:33There is a Met ticket office at the Grand Central Terminal at the foot of the 42nd Street and Vanderval Avenue ramp.
- 22:38Open weekdays 8 to 6 and Saturdays 8.30 to 4.
- 22:42For Long Islanders, there is a Met ticket office at Macy's in Huntington. It's in the Walt Whitman Shopping Center, and it's open during the regular store hours.
- 22:49Reservations can be made for box and reserve seats at any of the Howard Closed stores in the greater New York area.
- 22:56And the top of the second, Bill White is up to lead off for the St. Louis Cardinals. He's hitting.256. He's at four home runs and 12 runs batted in.
- 23:10Number 12, Bill White, number 12.
- 23:21Last night, the Phillies beat the Cardinals 4 to 2 in ten innings in Philadelphia.
- 23:27Swing and a ground ball foul, back of first. Mickey Vernon over, fields the ball and flips it to Craneville.
- 23:33Mickey Vernon, coaching for the St. Louis Cardinals this year, was twice the batting champion of the American League.
- 23:38Former Pittsburgh coach and former manager of the Washington Senators.
- 23:45Dodgers beat Houston 3 to 2 last night in ten innings. Cincinnati and Pittsburgh postponed because of rain last night.
- 23:53Pitch is a little tight. It's one and one to Bill White.
- 23:57American League last night. Boston beat the Yankees 3-2. Detroit beat Baltimore 5-4. Minnesota beat the White Sox 4 to 3.
- 24:04One-one pitch to left-hand batter Bill White. It's in there, front ball strikes.
- 24:11One and two. So in the American League, the Minnesota Twins are on top.
- 24:16The Chicago White Sox are a half game out and the Los Angeles Angels are a percentage points back of Chicago, a half game back of league leading Minnesota Twins.
- 24:24The pitch breaks low and away and it's two and two now to White with Mike Shannon, the right fielder on deck.
- 24:42Here's a 2-2 delivery. Swung on, second strikeout for the Fox.
- 24:49Mike Shannon, the right fielder, coming up hitting.091. He's been like 44 times and that's four hits, one run batter down.
- 25:02Shannon was brought up last year from Jacksonville and was the regular right fielder during the stretch run and in the World Series for the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 25:11Pitch is in for a tall strike. Strangely enough, it was the fine showing made by Mike Shannon when he was brought up that prevented the Cardinals from bringing Johnny Lewis back.
- 25:23Strike one pitch, high for a ball. It's 1-1. Here's a 1-1 delivery and it's low for a ball.
- 25:48Seated in the Cardinal Club box just to the home plate side of the Cardinal dugout is Vice President Stan Musial. Cardinal Vice President Stan Musial and General Manager Bob Howsam of the Cardinals is there also.
- 26:02Here's a 2-1 pitch, hand is low for a ball. Stan Musial, Bob Howsam and Manager Red Shandance helped raise a duplicate of the Cardinals World Championship flag over the Missouri Pavilion at the World's Fair today.
- 26:18Spawn has gone behind to Shannon, three balls and one strike. 3-1 pitch, foul back and out of play. Full count of 3-2. Tim McCarver is waiting on deck now for the cards.
- 26:42This is a playoff pitch. Swung on it on the ground to McMillan at short. D, big hop, throws over low and Craneville digs it out on the short hop for the out just in time.
- 27:10Played nicely on the pick up by Craneville at first base, two away. And Tim McCarver is about it, hitting 264 with one home run and four runs right at end.
- 27:40Spawn's pitched to the left hand batter. It in the air to center field, Ron Swaboda back, he's there and he makes the catch.
- 27:52The Spawn gets the cards out in order and at the top of the second the runs no hits, no errors, none left. The score at the end of an inning and a half is the Cardinals nothing and the Mets nothing.
- 28:02Is this one of those days when you're not yourself, even if you are, you'll feel more so when you listen to this.
- 28:07Oh, I'm not myself at all, my dear, my dear, I'm not myself at all.
- 28:18This song gets sung over and over at Irish parties and picnics until the singers raise a ferocious thirst. Then they change their tune.
- 28:27Come fill up your glasses and drink what you will while the man gives up the everyday. This is a traditional Irish drinking song and often the beer they drink is Reingold extra dry.
- 28:39In fact in New York City where there are more Irish than in the whole of Dublin, more people drink Reingold than any other beer.
- 28:47And Reingold is going great in New Jersey, New England and Pennsylvania too. Why do Irish Americans like Reingold?
- 28:53We don't know, but we must be doing something right.
- 28:58I'm a man you don't meet every day, every day. I'm a man you don't meet every day.
- 29:10Going now to the bottom half of the second inning and Joe Christopher is up to lead off for the New York Mets.
- 29:15Joe is batting clean up tonight and managed to clear his singles batting order.
- 29:25Bob Gibson's pitch swung on it on the ground to shortstop taken by Dick Grode played across to Bill White, there's one away.
- 29:32And that will bring on Ed Cranepool, the first baseman.
- 29:46Ed Cranepool is hitting 365, he has three home runs and 17 runs batted in.
- 29:53Left hand batter facing right hand pitcher Bob Gibson.
- 29:56And it's fired in for a call strike. Ron Swabota is in the on deck circle swinging bats.
- 30:08This pitch is low, it's in the dirt dug out by McCarver, it's one and one.
- 30:12Cardinal defense plays Cranepool absolutely straight away.
- 30:25This pitch is in for a call strike, good pitch by Bob Gibson.
- 30:45There's a swing and a foul ball back and out of play. Last year Gibson won four lost one against the Mets, his lifetime record against the Mets is seven and two.
- 30:52Those two games that the Mets won from Gibson were each one nothing and Al Jackson was the Mets winning pitcher in each of those games.
- 31:05One two pitch to Cranepool, foul back off the glove but McCarver he did not hold it so Cranepool is still alive.
- 31:13Gibson is 29 years of age, alumnus of Creighton University.
- 31:25Swing and a ball hit in the air to left field, right there at Lou Brock and he makes the catch.
- 31:30Two away and nobody on base and Ron Swabota is the batter.
- 31:37Hitting 286 with seven home runs and 14 runs batted in.
- 31:40He's caught on, listen to the crowd reaction to the announcement of Swabota.
- 31:47Well it proves what everybody's known for a long time, baseball fans like people who hit the ball a long way.
- 31:59Here's the pitch in there for a call strike.
- 32:03Swabota's a right hand batter.
- 32:10Hits in there for a call strike.
- 32:15Our Mr. Ralph Kiner has been given wide publicity as having said during his career you grab that bat way down on the handle where the Cadillacs are.
- 32:23He didn't say that really, nobody else did but he was credited to Ralph, still is.
- 32:30Roy McMillan's waiting on deck, two strike delivery and it's high for a ball, one and two.
- 32:44There is no score in this game and we're in the bottom half of the second inning.
- 32:49Pitch to Swabota is swung on and missed and the side is out.
- 32:53That's a first strike out for Bob Gibson but he gets the side in order, no runs, no hits, no errors, none left.
- 32:57The score at the end of two innings is the Cardinals nothing and the Mets nothing.
- 33:03St. Louis Cardinals here again tomorrow afternoon and Jack Fisher is going to be pitching for the New York Mets and Kirk Simmons will go for the Cardinals.
- 33:10Thursday is off and then the Cincinnati Reds will come in.
- 33:13The Mets will be trying to get revenge because last weekend, the last weekend of the recent road trip in Cincinnati the Reds took four straight games from the New York Mets.
- 33:27So the Reds will be in here on Friday night, Saturday afternoon and a doubleheader on Sunday and that will conclude the current home stand.
- 33:34Tickets are now on sale for any or all of those games.
- 33:37We're going to the third inning in just a moment, right now we pause for station identification.
- 33:40This is the New York Mets baseball network.
- 33:43This is WGY 810 on your dial in Schenectady.
- 33:47Time is now 830, capital district temperature now 61, mostly cloudy.
- 33:53This is Lindsay Nelson with Ralph Kiner and Bob Murphy at Shea Stadium in New York.
- 33:59Two innings totals for the Cardinals, no runs, one hit, no errors.
- 34:02For the Mets, no runs, one hit, no errors.
- 34:04I'm coming in here now to take you along, the fellow we were talking about just a moment ago, Mr. Ralph Kiner.
- 34:08Okay Lindsay and hi there everyone.
- 34:12First man up will be Bob Gibson for the St. Louis Cardinals against Warren Spahn.
- 34:19Bob a fine hitter for a pitcher, he has tremendous power.
- 34:22So Warren will have to work.
- 34:24And the first pitch by Spahn is in the center field, deep in the center field, way back in the room.
- 34:29He can't get to it, it is off of the wall.
- 34:32Gibson going to second base, now trying for third.
- 34:34Here comes the throw that might have him, it's good, it's there, he's out.
- 34:38Applause
- 34:59Bob Gibson with a long double off the center field wall.
- 35:01And when he tried to make it a three base hit, he was thrown out on a five relay.
- 35:08Going from the center fielder Ron Swabota to Roy McMillan and then over to Bobby Clouse who took a throw in the dirt to make a fine play there to complete the out of third base.
- 35:21Now with one away the batter will be Bill Gagliano and he takes low at ball one.
- 35:26Applause
- 35:35Gagliano with a base hit his first time up, one of the two hits given up by Spahn.
- 35:39Next pitch is a high fly ball into shallow right center field.
- 35:43Johnny Lewis calling for it and he makes the catch.
- 35:46Applause
- 35:48So quickly two away.
- 35:50Applause
- 35:52And it brings up Lou Brock.
- 35:53Lou sacrificed his first time up his average at 3-0-3.
- 35:57Applause
- 36:01Cardinals got their first man on, Bill Gagliano in the first then bunned him to second base.
- 36:07Kurt Flood who is the on deck batter right now, walks in the three two-pitch.
- 36:12But then Lawrence Fahn settled on the strikeout Ken Boyer and picked up Dick Grode on a pop up at the second.
- 36:18And the first pitch to Brock, it's down low ball one. One ball no strike.
- 36:24Applause
- 36:26Center fielder Ron Swabota playing a very shallow center field.
- 36:30It was Lou Brock who put one in the center field seats in the Polo grounds a couple years back.
- 36:35Next pitch back is inside corner, it's a strike.
- 36:38Lou the only man to hit one in there on the right field side of center field.
- 36:43Hank Aaron hit one in on the left field side and the first man to hit one in there.
- 36:46Only three hit all together.
- 36:49Joe Adcock, that was on the left field side too.
- 36:52Now the 1-1 delivery, curve ball Goodwin on the outside corner.
- 36:56Strike two, one ball two strikes.
- 37:00Applause
- 37:04Brock with two home runs, 11 runs batted in.
- 37:07The club leader is Bill White with four home runs.
- 37:10Applause
- 37:12One ball two strikes, Lawrence Fahn pitching to Lou Brock.
- 37:14Two men away, we're in the top of the third, no score.
- 37:18And Fahn side arms, the pitch is popped up foul, out of play.
- 37:22Applause
- 37:24Chris Canazaro coming back and watching the ball go into the stands.
- 37:28Well the Mets have four catchers on their roster.
- 37:31Chris Canazaro, Hawk Taylor, Jesse Gunder and Yogi Berra.
- 37:37And today is that day that all ball players dread.
- 37:40It's cut down day, midnight tonight.
- 37:44Mets will have to take two players off their roster.
- 37:47Applause
- 37:50The Mets have 12 pitchers they might cut there too.
- 37:53Most clubs go in with 10.
- 37:55Pitch back and hit slowly down to second.
- 37:57Fahn-Hunn charging in quickly over to first base to retire to the side.
- 38:00Applause
- 38:02No runs, one hit, no errors, no one left on base and the score.
- 38:05At the end of two and a half the Cardinals nothing, the Mets nothing.
- 38:07And it's time now for another unusual fact with the Viceroy Hall of Records.
- 38:12You know, it's a rare pitcher who wins over 200 games in his big league career.
- 38:18But the great Cy Young made the record books with 291 wins in the National League and get this,
- 38:24he had another 220 wins in the American League.
- 38:28Cy was the winningest pitcher in baseball history.
- 38:30And if you want to get the filter cigarette with the winningest taste of them all, it's Viceroy.
- 38:37When you try Viceroy you just got to like them.
- 38:40You see, Viceroy is specifically designed to taste the way you'd like a filter cigarette to taste.
- 38:46Not too strong like some brands that taste as if they didn't have a filter and not too light like some others.
- 38:52They just don't seem to satisfy your taste.
- 38:53But when you light up a Viceroy you get the filter cigarette that's not too strong, not too light.
- 39:00Viceroy's got the filter for the taste that's right.
- 39:03Viceroy's got the taste that's right.
- 39:07Not too strong and not too light.
- 39:10The taste that's right.
- 39:13Roy McMillan, the first man up for the Mets here and the third.
- 39:17He looks at the first pitch of curveball for Bob Gibson.
- 39:20It's in there for a call strike.
- 39:21Roy batting for the first time batting 182, a right hand batter.
- 39:25Gibson now into the windup and back again.
- 39:28And again a curve for strike two.
- 39:31Gibson has given up one hit.
- 39:33A leadoff single to Bobby Klaus in the first.
- 39:36He has struck out one.
- 39:38Walk none.
- 39:40So far has pitched to six batters through two innings.
- 39:43Double play racing the base hit by Bobby Klaus.
- 39:45And now the big right hander back again.
- 39:47And the ball lying in the left center field.
- 39:51Coming over Lou Brock.
- 39:53He can't get it.
- 39:55Backing him up a third flight and now Roy McMillan who was going to second holds up and a fast throw coming all the way into the pitcher's mouth.
- 40:00Ball cut off by the second baseman Phil Gagliano and Roy decided not to go when he saw Kurt Flood back of Lou Brock.
- 40:08Could admit it that of course he had no idea the throw would have been that bad.
- 40:12No Roy a two strike single.
- 40:14A second hit for the Mets no score in the game and the batter will be Bobby.
- 40:18First.
- 40:22First the catcher batting eighth in the batting order batting one forty three a right hand batter.
- 40:34And the first pitch to Katasero swung on a missed strike one a fastball about letter high.
- 40:38Chris looking for his first run battered in.
- 40:43He is at seven it's forty nine times up.
- 40:46Now checking with Don Heffner the third base coach.
- 40:52On deck batter Warren Spahn.
- 40:56And a throw to first base finds McMillan back with no tag by Bill White.
- 41:01Or the Cardinals white at first base.
- 41:03Phil Gagliano at second base.
- 41:04Dick Grode at shortstop and Ken Boyard third.
- 41:08Tim McCarver the catcher sending out the signs again the first again no tag.
- 41:14Gibson trying to hold McMillan close at first base in case of a hit run.
- 41:21No score no one out we're in the bottom half of the third now the pitch.
- 41:25It is taken in there for a called strike.
- 41:28Scoring around a throw to one Chris Katasero.
- 41:31So the cat now at oh and two.
- 41:32Oh and two.
- 41:39Oh and two.
- 41:42McMillan at first base.
- 41:45Where the two strike base is.
- 41:48Now he's edging off Gibson to the plate.
- 41:51And the pitch is a curveball looked at it's ball one.
- 41:54It's just messy.
- 41:55One ball two strikes.
- 42:06Bob Gibson who likes to work fast now taking just a little bit more time.
- 42:10And now to the plate and he misses high with a fastball.
- 42:14Count evens at two balls and two strikes.
- 42:17The wind is blowing in from center field.
- 42:19And the center fielder Kurt Flood who normally plays a very shallow center field extremely shallow against Chris Katasero.
- 42:26Right fielder Mike Shannon also shallow.
- 42:29Left fielder Lou Brock fairly deep and left.
- 42:31Now to do a curveball is outside at all three.
- 42:37Oh cat now and Chris checking with after as to whether or not the runner will be going on the pitch.
- 42:43A little bit difficult to send a runner on Gibson because he strikes out many in the ballgame.
- 42:47Miller the first base edging off.
- 42:50He goes the pitch is taken by all.
- 42:56So Roy McCullin who is running moving down the second base on the walk to Chris Katasero.
- 43:02That's what runners at first and second with no one out and more fun coming up.
- 43:05One about a one fifty four to hit some 13 times up one of the hits that you base it.
- 43:13And boy are the third baseman already and looking for the fun as is Bill White.
- 43:17No score in the game.
- 43:19Spawn squares around.
- 43:21And the third baseman is going to be the third baseman.
- 43:24And the third baseman is going to be the third baseman.
- 43:27And the third baseman is going to be the third baseman.
- 43:29As well as past we can see all the straightforward thoughts well in the last year on.
- 43:34When many have gone to third base as and for the second baseman already.
- 43:37Looking for the but as is Bill White helped for the game was squares around.
- 43:42How about Gibson Sehra does not go to either second or third to breath.
- 43:49So at the great event are we information was confusing complained.
- 43:53there was no one there and he
- 43:54had to go to first.
- 43:55Oh the Mets move up their
- 43:56runners.
- 43:56They have them at second and
- 43:57third was one out and on the
- 43:59play.
- 44:01It went one for.
- 44:09Bond credited with a sacrifice
- 44:11in the batter coming up with
- 44:12Bobby Clough.
- 44:17Bobby with a single his first
- 44:19time up raising his average to
- 44:21one sixty nine.
- 44:22He's a little through the
- 44:23middle.
- 44:25Cardinals are playing their
- 44:26infield back at second and
- 44:27third their infield in the
- 44:28first and third second and
- 44:30short.
- 44:33And the first best the class is
- 44:34off the handle.
- 44:36Passball jammed in tight
- 44:37strike one.
- 44:44Cardinals no runs to it.
- 44:46The Mets no runs and two hits
- 44:47with the Mets with runners at
- 44:48second and third with one out
- 44:50here in the bottom half of the
- 44:51third.
- 44:53Gibson into the windup and back
- 44:54again and a curve ball hit
- 44:56foul.
- 44:57Pioneer the left side out of
- 44:59play.
- 45:03And Tim McArthur going out to
- 45:05the pitcher's mound to talk with
- 45:06Bob Gibson to strike down on
- 45:09Bobby Clough.
- 45:18Tim McArthur after the
- 45:19conversation coming back to home
- 45:21play.
- 45:24Hope with umpire in this game
- 45:26tonight.
- 45:27A new crew in here headed by
- 45:29Al Barley at third base.
- 45:31Stan Lannis at first base Mel
- 45:33Steiner second a curve ball
- 45:34checked on it.
- 45:36Breaking pitch Bobby was
- 45:37starting to swing and held off
- 45:39Justin time.
- 45:40Now at one ball and two strikes.
- 45:48Oh I think on that third base.
- 45:51Chris Canna zero at second.
- 45:55Gibson reading the signs from
- 45:57Tim McArthur now into the windup
- 45:58his next pitch curve way inside.
- 46:01So the cat now has two balls and
- 46:03two strikes and he started off
- 46:09with Roy McMillan getting the
- 46:11two strikes single in the left
- 46:13field.
- 46:14Chris Canna zero then why.
- 46:19Five wins and no losses this
- 46:20year.
- 46:22Three of them shut out.
- 46:23There's a two to pitch again.
- 46:25It's foul off to the right side.
- 46:27Oh Bobby Clough saying stuff.
- 46:30Staying in there the catcher
- 46:31holding the two balls and two
- 46:33strikes.
- 46:37Anything out the right field in
- 46:39the air would have to be fairly
- 46:41deep because Mike Shannon the
- 46:42right fielder there was one of
- 46:43the best times in baseball.
- 46:45He's also playing the shallow
- 46:46right field.
- 46:47Kurt Flood shallow and
- 46:48centerfield.
- 46:49Lou Brock deep and left.
- 46:51Now a two to fastball one on a
- 46:53miss like three.
- 46:55So Bob Gibson picks up an
- 46:57important strikeout at the
- 46:59second in this game.
- 47:00And it brings up Ron Hunt with
- 47:01two in a way Ron hit into a
- 47:09double play his first time up.
- 47:11He's betting at two seventy
- 47:12three a right hand batter with
- 47:13no home runs and one run better
- 47:14than all score on bottom half of
- 47:22the third and the first pitcher
- 47:24breaking pitch in first strike.
- 47:26Gibson with a hard slider at
- 47:27strike one infield deep all the
- 47:35way around except the third
- 47:36lawyer protecting against a
- 47:38bunch.
- 47:39Next pitch back inside a
- 47:40fastball this time one ball one
- 47:42strike.
- 47:49I'm a villain that you know off
- 47:50at third base.
- 47:51Chris Cantazero a short lead at
- 47:53second.
- 47:53Gibson taking the signs from Tim
- 47:55McCarver and not taking a
- 47:58little too much time and Ron
- 47:59Hunt calls time straight out the
- 48:01batter's box time back in and
- 48:05now the 1 1 delivery fastball
- 48:07hit down the short.
- 48:08It goes over the first base for
- 48:10the out to retire the side in
- 48:13the ending the Mets leave two on
- 48:14the base hit in the walk.
- 48:16There were no errors in the
- 48:17first base.
- 48:18The second base hit the
- 48:19second base hit the third base
- 48:23in the ending the Mets leave two
- 48:25on the base hit in the walk.
- 48:27There were no errors the score
- 48:28at the end of three.
- 48:30The Mets nothing the Cardinals
- 48:31nothing.
- 48:33Are you one of those people who
- 48:34go to a German American picnic
- 48:36and can't sing because you don't
- 48:37know the song.
- 48:52They're common.
- 48:53In the Himmel is a song that
- 48:56gets sung over and over at
- 48:57German parties and picnics until
- 49:00the singers raise a fearful
- 49:01thirst.
- 49:02Beer here is the traditional
- 49:08German call for beer and often
- 49:10it's Ryan Gold extra dry they
- 49:11call for.
- 49:12In fact in New York City where
- 49:14there are more Germans than in
- 49:16all of Heidelberg more people
- 49:19drink angle than any other beer
- 49:21and Ryan Gold is doing great in
- 49:22New Jersey New England and
- 49:23Pennsylvania too.
- 49:25Why do German Americans like
- 49:27Ryan Gold.
- 49:28We don't know but we must be
- 49:30doing something right.
- 49:37Top of the fourth no score as
- 49:39Bob Gibson and Warren's bond
- 49:40dual away here at Shea Stadium
- 49:42born on the mound for the Mets
- 49:44will face Kurt Flood Ken Boyer
- 49:45and Dick Grode here and he goes
- 49:48into the first lineup and his
- 49:49first pitch.
- 49:51It's a curve ball low for ball
- 49:52one.
- 49:54Kurt Flood walked in the three
- 49:55two pitchers first time up his
- 49:56average at three hundred.
- 49:57He's got a lot of home runs.
- 50:00Yes for home runs 16 runs batted
- 50:03in a lot of home runs for Kurt
- 50:07and the next pitch is lined to
- 50:08left field a base hit Joe
- 50:09Christopher over on one knee to
- 50:11block it.
- 50:12He comes up with it throws it on
- 50:13in.
- 50:14Oh Kurt Flood leads off here in
- 50:16the top of the fourth with a
- 50:17base hit.
- 50:20That's the third hit off Warren's
- 50:21side of the field Ken Boyer can
- 50:28struck out on the screw ball as
- 50:29first time up his own for one
- 50:38taking his average that to seventy
- 50:40six right hand better most
- 50:48valuable player the runner goes
- 50:49and the pitch fouled off strike
- 50:51and the run play put on by the
- 50:52Cardinals but spawn picks up a
- 50:54strike.
- 51:04Speaking about floods home runs
- 51:06last year he had a total of five
- 51:08for the whole season already as
- 51:09for house pond checking the
- 51:13signs flood already off at first
- 51:15spot not even on the Fitchy
- 51:16River he goes to first base but
- 51:18he's got to get back by that you
- 51:22know now again on strike down
- 51:27and Ken Boyer and spawn to the
- 51:31plate the pitch inside one ball
- 51:33one strike and a zero faking a
- 51:35throw to first base no score in
- 51:38this game no one away top of the
- 51:40fourth other games in the
- 51:42National League Cincinnati
- 51:43nothing Philadelphia nothing
- 51:44after one and a half.
- 51:45Its third time to hear everybody
- 51:47score against the 못raه sun
- 51:49and Florence Spurs against short
- 51:52Milwaukee nothing Pittsburgh
- 51:54nothing after one watching gaming
- 51:55against Cardinal now to run
- 51:56score in the national league so
- 51:58far won one delivery a pitch on
- 52:01Floyd draws a throw for his
- 52:02face but he gets back in time
- 52:09scheduled in the national league
- 52:11Houston against Los Angeles
- 52:12Dodgers leading the National League by two and a half games over Cincinnati and Cincinnati in here this weekend for Friday night
- 52:19Saturday afternoon and Sunday doubleheader
- 52:23Two balls and one strike one again with a lead at first
- 52:26And spawn to the plate and the pitch is low. It's ball three
- 52:30So spawn three and one against Ken Boyer
- 52:33In the American leg Yankees out with no runs in two and the third innings to a mega tuna happening
- 52:45Boston no runs in two. It's nothing nothing after two and a half Saddam our against Wilson Detroit nothing
- 52:51Washington nothing after one and a half Wickersham against Kreitzer
- 52:54Even nothing Baltimore nothing after two and a half Terry against barber. So there hasn't been a run scored in the Major League so far tonight
- 53:00Throw the first base flat back not too much trouble also scheduled in the National League Los Angeles at Minnesota
- 53:08Kansas City Chicago not scheduled
- 53:11Three balls one strike one with a big lead. He draws another throw. It's fairly close, but he's back in time
- 53:19What takes about as big a lead as you can take
- 53:25Now he has shortened up
- 53:27And spawn steps off the pitching rubber blood goes a little bit closer to first base now a quick throw to first but not in time
- 53:34Come on anticipating a hit and run play right here. He's trying to pick something up at first
- 53:41Now he sets again and the three one pitch with the runner going is fouled away
- 53:46All going out of play on the first base side the cat goes up to three balls and two strikes and blood goes back to first
- 53:59Cardinals don't run three hits a mess no runs in two
- 54:04Going out top of the fourth
- 54:06On deck batter Jake growth and flood again with that lead and again. He draws a throw and he's back safely
- 54:20Three balls two strikes on sets again
- 54:25He's back safely
- 54:27Three balls two strikes on sets again and the pitch with a runner going is in the center field shallow center
- 54:35On Swabota moving and calling for and he makes the catch
- 54:44On hanging tight picking up Ken Boyer now he'll fix the dick drop
- 54:48But back the first base after the cat
- 54:52And right here again a hit and run man
- 54:55Dick growth big batting to 28. He's off to a very slow start
- 55:04Shortstop Roy McMillan has a good start
- 55:08And the catch is a hit and run play
- 55:11Very slow start shortstop Roy McMillan has shortened up in his position
- 55:21The runner goes the pitches hit in the center field fairly deep changes the water back by the warning track. He has room and he makes the catch
- 55:28But who is all the way down the second base back to first
- 55:31To a way down it brings up Bill White Bill was curved out his first time up
- 55:37Adding a 253 with four home runs and 12 runs better than
- 55:40Why the left hand batter no Scarlett game Dent Awesome
- 55:48He's missed this run already
- 55:49a
- 55:54Bramot
- 56:06McDermott
- 56:07is
- 56:07Ha
- 56:08first and the pitch to why it is
- 56:11on the inside corner throw the
- 56:12first base with blood back
- 56:14ahead of the deck one strike
- 56:18down at Bill White.
- 56:25That's a determined to work
- 56:26around on Kurt's blood at first
- 56:29base again he leads off and Spahn
- 56:33steps off the pitching rubber

- 57:26It's very hard to sell sheet
- 57:27music in Jamaica and make up
- 57:29songs wherever they need them
- 57:31like this.
- 57:32Having a party eating rice and
- 57:34peas and dancing happily as you

- 57:39nice pile.

- 57:43I'll talk to her for a while
- 57:45when Jamaicans get together for
- 57:47a party the beat is calypso and
- 57:49the songs are made up on the
- 57:50spot.
- 57:51The party was hilarious as it
- 57:53could be but in the morning
- 57:55there was news for me the penny

- 58:15of people than in any other city
- 58:17in the world more people drink
- 58:19Reingold extra dry than any
- 58:20other beer and Reingold is going
- 58:22great in New Jersey New England
- 58:24and Pennsylvania too.
- 58:25Why do Jamaicans like Reingold
- 58:27we don't know but we must be
- 58:29doing something right.
- 58:34Bottom half of the fourth Johnny
- 58:35Lewis lead off for the Mets
- 58:37against Bob Gibson Johnny 0 for
- 58:41one a left hand battered he hits
- 58:42the first pitch to left field

- 1:03:37must cut down to squad limits of
- 1:03:39twenty five players so there will be
- 1:03:41personnel moves made throughout the
- 1:03:43course of this evening by various
- 1:03:46major league ball clubs as they make
- 1:03:48moves to get down to the squad limit
- 1:03:52and we'll tell you about them as we
- 1:03:53learn of them now the pitch is in
- 1:03:58there for a called strike Shannon
- 1:04:02hitting point zero eight nine after

- 1:04:08times and had four hits so far this
- 1:04:10season is a swing and a drive to

- 1:04:18over there near the edge of the
- 1:04:19winding track he's called he makes
- 1:04:20the catch there's one away that'll
- 1:04:22bring up Tim McCarver who's been up
- 1:04:24one time and fly it out to center
- 1:04:25field a carver is a left hand batter
- 1:04:35so far the Yankees have recalled
- 1:04:37infield a Harris Clark and a player
- 1:04:39move the Washington Senators have
- 1:04:41given Roy Sebers his unconditional
- 1:04:43release they have returned pitcher

- 1:04:49Spokane
- 1:04:53Spon's pitch is low for a ball to
- 1:04:56Tim McCarver the Cleveland Indians
- 1:04:59have sent pitchers Stan Williams to
- 1:05:01Portland and Williams and they got
- 1:05:03from the Yankees and the Yankees got

- 1:05:14and the pitch is in for a called
- 1:05:16strike already the Cardinals are
- 1:05:19down to their 25 player limit and
- 1:05:21they got down to the 25 player
- 1:05:22limit by sending left hand pitcher
- 1:05:24Dave Dowling on waivers to the
- 1:05:26Chicago Cubs the New York Mets are
- 1:05:30carrying 27 players at this time so
- 1:05:32they must cut down to 25 here is the
- 1:05:36one one pitch swung on and land in
- 1:05:38the right field for a base hit Johnny
- 1:05:40Lewis over cuts it off up with it and
- 1:05:42holds McCarver to a single right
- 1:05:45that breaks up pitcher Bob Gibson this
- 1:05:50man can swing a good bat as he proved
- 1:05:52when he came up in third inning and
- 1:05:54doubled into the warning track and off
- 1:05:57the wall and center and it was thrown
- 1:05:59out trying to stretch it into a

- 1:06:48belt buckle missed by an inch
- 1:06:512-0
- 1:06:57Gibson turns to look down to coach Joe
- 1:06:59Schultz who runs through the science
- 1:07:01at third base
- 1:07:07the Cardinals this year under the
- 1:07:09management of red chain deans
- 1:07:16now spawned with the 2-0 delivery
- 1:07:18swung on and lined in the right it's a
- 1:07:20base hit Johnny Lewis ended up with it
- 1:07:22and fires in and taken by McMillan
- 1:07:25and it went over the head of Ron Hutt
- 1:07:27but holding it second is McCarver
- 1:07:30and Gibson's on with his second hit of the
- 1:07:32night back-to-back base hits off spawn
- 1:07:35with one away and Phil Gagliano coming

- 1:08:17spawn is up and set now as Cardinal
- 1:08:19runners lead at first and second pitch
- 1:08:22to the right hand batter and it misses
- 1:08:23outside for a ball
- 1:08:29as Ralph Kiner was noting umpire Augie
- 1:08:31Donatelli gets down on that right knee
- 1:08:33right down on the ground on each pitch
- 1:08:36he's right down there in the dirt
- 1:08:431-0 delivery and it's low and away for
- 1:08:45a ball 2-0
- 1:08:54Stan Landis is the umpire at first
- 1:08:56Mel Steiner is the umpire at second and
- 1:08:58Al Barlich is the umpire at third base
- 1:09:01Al Barlich is the senior umpire in the
- 1:09:04National League
- 1:09:11spawn steps off the rubber tightens up
- 1:09:13the runners no throw is made
- 1:09:18Gagliano stepped out at the plate he's
- 1:09:19back in and waiting now with a 2-0 count
- 1:09:22spawn up and set 2-0 pitch down low
- 1:09:27spawn is trying to work carefully now
- 1:09:29with runners on and he's gone behind
- 1:09:31three balls and no strikes to Gagliano
- 1:09:33with Lou Brock on deck
- 1:09:46Tim McCarver the runner at second Bob
- 1:09:47Gibson the runner at first
- 1:09:50this is a 3-0 pitch
- 1:09:54and he walked him on four pitch balls to
- 1:09:56load the bases with one man up
- 1:09:58that is the second walk issued by spawn
- 1:10:03brings up left hand batter Lou Brock
- 1:10:05who has sacrificed and grounded out
- 1:10:07second to first
- 1:10:12let's see how the Mets play the infield
- 1:10:13now, Hunter McMillan looking into the
- 1:10:16dugout for instruction from manager Casey
- 1:10:18Stingle it is a managerial decision and
- 1:10:20at this moment the Mets have the infield
- 1:10:22back at double play depth with Faust at
- 1:10:24third playing even with the edge of the
- 1:10:26grass on the left hand batter
- 1:10:28Crane Poo playing deep and behind the
- 1:10:30runner at first base
- 1:10:33here's the pitch swung out and hit on the
- 1:10:34ground towards second it can't be a
- 1:10:36double play and now a collision between
- 1:10:39Hunt and Phil Gagliano and Hud is down
- 1:10:43with his head on the ground
- 1:10:45a collision between Hunt and Gagliano
- 1:10:47and the out call is made there
- 1:10:51and Hud is still down on the ground
- 1:10:53and manager Rich Hanenich is coming out now
- 1:10:58Coach Schultz is protesting to the umpire
- 1:11:01Bell-Styler at second
- 1:11:03it was a slow roller hit the second base
- 1:11:06and Hud came in to field the ball and
- 1:11:10there was a collision between Hud and
- 1:11:12runner Phil Gagliano
- 1:11:14of course the base runner must allow the
- 1:11:19fielder the base path in fielding the
- 1:11:21ball but the Cardinals are contending
- 1:11:23that Hud made the contact after he got to
- 1:11:25the ball
- 1:11:27however
- 1:11:29Hud is coming off the field and it is his
- 1:11:37wrist that is injured
- 1:11:39trainer Gus March is holding Hunt's wrist
- 1:11:42as he leads him off the field and it could
- 1:11:44be a costly play for the New York Mets
- 1:11:47Charlie Smith is coming out of the dugout
- 1:11:49and the clubhouse will move to second
- 1:11:51Smith will go to third but Ron Hud is injured
- 1:11:53and he is out of this ballgame and was
- 1:11:55holding the wrist as he came off the field
- 1:11:57we'll get a clubhouse report for you later
- 1:11:59as soon as they have had a chance to
- 1:12:01examine him closely in the clubhouse
- 1:12:03but Ron Hud is not a man who comes out of
- 1:12:08a ballgame if there's any possible way to
- 1:12:10stay in it
- 1:12:12the clubhouse moves to second and
- 1:12:15Charlie Smith goes in and plays third
- 1:12:18number one
- 1:12:20moving to second base
- 1:12:22number six
- 1:12:24Bobby Clouse
- 1:12:26number six
- 1:12:36we'll give you a report on Hud as soon as
- 1:12:38we get one there is also a possibility
- 1:12:40that it could have been a collar bone
- 1:12:42as he was over on the grass paying
- 1:12:48attention to that as well but we'll wait
- 1:12:50until we get a report from the Mets
- 1:12:52clubhouse
- 1:13:02McCarver
- 1:13:08back to third and Gibson at second of
- 1:13:10course
- 1:13:12on the interference play
- 1:13:18the air catcher please

- 1:13:38the put out goes to Hud
- 1:13:40as Jagliano is out
- 1:13:42the base is still loaded
- 1:13:44and here is Warren Spong pitch
- 1:13:46swung on and land one off the cloud
- 1:13:48he'll go to first base and the side is out
- 1:13:50without a run having that score
- 1:13:55throw in
- 1:13:56stop having the fifth inning
- 1:13:58the St. Louis Cardinals got no runs

- 1:24:12Warren Spahn on the mound
- 1:24:32and the pitch is swung on
- 1:24:34hit on the ground foul back of third
- 1:24:36and the pitch is swung on
- 1:24:38hit on the ground foul back of third
- 1:24:40there's action now in the Mets bullpen
- 1:24:42Gary Crowell is throwing
- 1:24:44Warren Spahn
- 1:24:46had a little workout on the bases that time
- 1:24:48and had to hit the dirt coming into the plate
- 1:24:50so just as a precaution
- 1:24:52the Mets have started Gary Crowell
- 1:24:54throwing in the bullpen
- 1:24:56Mets lead by a score of one nothing
- 1:25:00pitch is low and away for a ball
- 1:25:02one and one to Ken Boyer
- 1:25:04one and one to Ken Boyer
- 1:25:14and the one one delivery
- 1:25:16swung on and popped up foul
- 1:25:18out of play
- 1:25:22runs the count to one ball
- 1:25:24and two strikes
- 1:25:26Dick Groat is waiting on deck for the Cardinals
- 1:25:40and the one two pitch
- 1:25:42screwball breaks low and away
- 1:25:44it's two two
- 1:25:52Charlie Smith at third for the Mets
- 1:25:54Bobby Claus at second
- 1:26:04that pitch is inside low and it's a full count of three and two
- 1:26:18now Spahn with the playoff pitch
- 1:26:20outside he walked him
- 1:26:22third walk issued by Spahn
- 1:26:26and it's a lead off walk to Boyer
- 1:26:28and brings up Dick Groat
- 1:26:30he is popped to second and fly to center
- 1:26:38Mets shade center field around Swabota
- 1:26:40over toward right
- 1:26:42they have Johnny Lewis way over toward the line
- 1:26:44because Dick Groat likes to take that ball to right field
- 1:26:46one of the fine hit and run men in the game of baseball
- 1:26:54Crane pool holds against the runner Ken Boyer
- 1:26:58and it is full foul back of third and out of play
- 1:27:04strike one to Dick Groat
- 1:27:06Boyer back to the bag at first
- 1:27:08Bill White has moved out to the on deck circle now
- 1:27:10for the Cardinals
- 1:27:20Spahn looks to count a zero for a sign
- 1:27:24pitch out nothing odd
- 1:27:26and the ball is in the air
- 1:27:28and it's a one two pitch
- 1:27:30and the one two pitch
- 1:27:32and the one two pitch
- 1:27:34and the one two pitch
- 1:27:36pitch out nothing odd
- 1:27:40Mets figured that just maybe
- 1:27:42Cardinals might be playing hit and run on that pitch
- 1:27:44so
- 1:27:46count a zero call for the pitch out
- 1:27:48one and one, Groat looks now for the sign
- 1:28:00Boyer takes his lead at first
- 1:28:02one one pitch and another pitch out
- 1:28:04and a throw down and not in time
- 1:28:06well the Mets figured since they had called
- 1:28:08for one pitch out and it had gone one one
- 1:28:10that perhaps the Cardinals then would put it on
- 1:28:12so they call for another one
- 1:28:14now it's two balls and one strike
- 1:28:16two one
- 1:28:32two one delivery with the runner going
- 1:28:34it's on now and it's in the air
- 1:28:36down the right field out a foul ball
- 1:28:38and Johnny Lewis can't get to it
- 1:28:40a long strike
- 1:28:42they were playing hit and run with Boyer going
- 1:28:44pitch out now to Groat
- 1:28:52Groat's reading Joe Shulstein
- 1:28:54to see what they do on two two
- 1:29:00there's nobody out and the Mets are leading here
- 1:29:02by a score of one to nothing
- 1:29:10the bond is up and set
- 1:29:12here's the pitch
- 1:29:14on the ground to third
- 1:29:16the Clogs go one, the total first
- 1:29:18the double play
- 1:29:24with the runner holding
- 1:29:26Dick Groat hit a ground ball to third
- 1:29:28Charlie Smith up with it fired
- 1:29:30the Clogs made the pivot on the peg on and the Mets
- 1:29:32have pulled off their 23rd double play
- 1:29:34of this young season
- 1:29:36and Bill White is coming up
- 1:29:38he has struck out swinging and lined out to second
- 1:29:40so far
- 1:29:44White is a left hand batter
- 1:29:50ground ball hits the second base
- 1:29:52Clouse is over up with it he plays the crane
- 1:29:54pull and the side is out
- 1:29:56no runs, no hits, no errors
- 1:29:58none left and the score at the end of
- 1:30:00five and a half innings just the Mets
- 1:30:02one, the Cardinals nothing
- 1:30:04but the words from Viceroy Cigarette
- 1:30:10Viceroy's got the taste that's right
- 1:30:12not too strong and not too light
- 1:30:14the taste that's right
- 1:30:20you get the word
- 1:30:22it's Viceroy, a cigarette that's
- 1:30:24specifically designed to taste the way
- 1:30:26you'd like a filter cigarette to taste
- 1:30:28if you're a filter smoker
- 1:30:30you've already discovered
- 1:30:32some brands taste too strong
- 1:30:34as if they didn't even have a filter
- 1:30:36and others taste too light
- 1:30:38you know the kind, they never seem
- 1:30:40to satisfy your taste
- 1:30:48why the General Electric Station ends
- 1:30:50connected a 810 on your dial
- 1:30:58this is Lindsay Nelson

- 1:31:16his first time up tonight he's hitting 151
- 1:31:18here's a swing
- 1:31:20and a miss for strike one, one and one
- 1:31:22to the right hand batter with Johnny Lewis-Ande
- 1:31:24the miss one and the guard knows nothing
- 1:31:34Bob Gibson with the one-one delivery
- 1:31:36swung on and on the ground is short
- 1:31:38taken deep by Grode, long throw
- 1:31:40and he beat it for a little bit
- 1:31:48Charlie Smith
- 1:31:50legs out, the base hit
- 1:31:54and is on it first with
- 1:31:56Johnny Lewis coming up
- 1:32:04Lewis has grounded out and
- 1:32:06flying out so far
- 1:32:14and the crowd comes alive here at
- 1:32:16Shea Stadium with the chant of
- 1:32:18Joe Metz
- 1:32:20Lewis bumps the ball down the third base line
- 1:32:22a foul ball and it falls off
- 1:32:24Metz trying to get Smith
- 1:32:26on down to second with Joe
- 1:32:28Christopher waiting on deck
- 1:32:42Metz now has five hits off
- 1:32:44Gibson
- 1:32:48all right handers set
- 1:32:50and a pitch to Johnny Lewis
- 1:32:52it's one run and miss for strike two
- 1:33:00he took a rip at that one
- 1:33:02and the two strike delivery is live in the right field for a base hit
- 1:33:17Cannon comes up with it, Smith holds it second
- 1:33:19as the throw goes to second and Lewis is on it first
- 1:33:21with a line shot to right
- 1:33:23and the Nature runners at first and second
- 1:33:25not nobody out and Joe Christopher
- 1:33:27coming up.
- 1:33:37The first round it out and
- 1:33:38fouled out the first place so
- 1:33:39far.
- 1:33:40He's reading down his side now
- 1:33:42to see if the Mets are going to
- 1:33:45try to sacrifice the runners are
- 1:33:50the Mets are leading in this
- 1:33:51game by a score of one to nothing
- 1:33:52and listen to that crowd.
- 1:34:00Bill White at first place
- 1:34:01expecting the bun is way on the
- 1:34:03edge of the grass and Ken Boyers
- 1:34:05on the cutout at third.
- 1:34:11Here's the pitch and the
- 1:34:12Bunches and Mithies for strike
- 1:34:14one.
- 1:34:16Joe Christopher questioning

- 1:35:42An intentional pass with first
- 1:35:47base open.
- 1:35:54We're all back there for a
- 1:35:55little instruction.

- 1:35:57the dugout and manager Casey
- 1:35:59Stengel is talking to Swabota
- 1:36:00now as ball for and train who
- 1:36:03goes to first.
- 1:36:05The bases are loaded with one
- 1:36:06man out.
- 1:36:07Now Swabota's been up twice and
- 1:36:09the young fellow has been
- 1:36:10knocked out both times by
- 1:36:12hard throwing Bob Gibson.
- 1:36:28Swabota is 20 years of age and
- 1:36:30he hasn't faced many pitchers
- 1:36:31like Bob Gibson who came into
- 1:36:33this game with a record of five
- 1:36:34wins and no losses.
- 1:36:37So let's see how he makes out
- 1:36:38this time.
- 1:36:43That's just in a hurry.
- 1:36:44He took the short chopping
- 1:36:45stroke.
- 1:36:46It's like one like Melon is on
- 1:36:50deck.
- 1:36:51Max two for two fastball right
- 1:36:55in there for a call right to

- 1:40:06blowing away from all
- 1:40:21and Gibson with the pitch
- 1:40:23hung on and fouled off a strike
- 1:40:25one at one and one.
- 1:40:31There is no action as yet in the
- 1:40:34final bullpen and that's a
- 1:40:37three runs on seven hits.
- 1:40:48There's a one one delivery
- 1:40:50breaking ball high and tight.
- 1:40:52It's two and one.
- 1:41:00Well the old timers say when you
- 1:41:02have a man who throws his heart
- 1:41:03at Gibson all you got to do is
- 1:41:04just get some wood on that ball
- 1:41:06and that's what McMillan's been
- 1:41:07doing tonight and he's gone
- 1:41:09three for three to one pitch in
- 1:41:15there for a call strike at two
- 1:41:16to the count of their Warren
- 1:41:21Spahn is waiting on deck and the
- 1:41:31two to delivery swung on and
- 1:41:33missed he struck him out five
- 1:41:35strikeouts in the game for
- 1:41:36Gibson so far but the Mets and
- 1:41:39the bottom of the six picked up
- 1:41:40two runs on three hits no errors
- 1:41:44and two left and the score at
- 1:41:45the end of six full innings is
- 1:41:47the Mets three and the cardinals
- 1:41:49nothing Bob Murphy will be along
- 1:41:51in just a moment to detail the
- 1:41:52play by play right now is a very
- 1:41:55sad French Canadian song about a
- 1:41:57fellow who lost the key of his
- 1:41:58clarinet.
- 1:41:59Listen.
- 1:42:01I lost the key of my clarinet
- 1:42:04I lost the key of my clarinet
- 1:42:07Oh, don't tell me he knows
- 1:42:09I lost the key of my clarinet
- 1:42:13is a song with the kind of humor
- 1:42:15French Canadians love but one
- 1:42:17song leads to another and the
- 1:42:19first that follows is no laughing
- 1:42:20matter
- 1:42:21Oh,
- 1:42:33I'm the cool is what they'll
- 1:42:34sing as they reach for a beer
- 1:42:36probably Reingold extra dry.
- 1:42:38In fact in New York City where
- 1:42:40there are more different kinds
- 1:42:41of people than in any other city
- 1:42:43in the world.
- 1:42:44More people drink Reingold than
- 1:42:46any other beer and Reingold is
- 1:42:48going great in New Jersey, New
- 1:42:49England and Pennsylvania too.
- 1:42:52Why do French Canadians like
- 1:42:53Reingold?
- 1:42:54We don't know but we must be
- 1:42:56doing something right.
- 1:43:06Now the seventh inning here at
- 1:43:07Shea Stadium and Mike Shannon
- 1:43:09the right fielder will be up
- 1:43:10against Warren Spahn.
- 1:43:13Shannon over to has been thrown
- 1:43:14out by the shortstop Roy
- 1:43:16McMillan and fly to center.
- 1:43:18Rangey right hand batter feet
- 1:43:22wide apart.
- 1:43:23Warren Spahn starts him off with
- 1:43:26a breaking ball for a strike on
- 1:43:27the outside corner.
- 1:43:32Bottom third of the cardinal
- 1:43:33batting order hitting in the
- 1:43:34seventh.
- 1:43:35Nothing going in the St. Louis
- 1:43:36bullpen because Bob Gibson the
- 1:43:39cardinal pitcher is a solid
- 1:43:40hitter.
- 1:43:46House body into his windup
- 1:43:47down comes his pitch outside and
- 1:43:49high one ball one strike.
- 1:43:57New York three runs seven hits
- 1:43:59and no errors St. Louis no runs
- 1:44:01five hits no errors.
- 1:44:09Now the one one delivery black
- 1:44:11foul down the third base line no
- 1:44:12play.
- 1:44:17A game tomorrow at 2 p.m. Jack
- 1:44:18Fisher pitching against Kurt
- 1:44:19Simmons.
- 1:44:22Mets will make their first trip
- 1:44:23to St. Louis when they close out
- 1:44:24this homestand.
- 1:44:26They will start their next
- 1:44:27road trip in Milwaukee then
- 1:44:28spend the weekend in St. Louis
- 1:44:30come back for a two night stop
- 1:44:31in Philadelphia then return to
- 1:44:33Shea Stadium to meet the Cubs
- 1:44:34and the Pirates for the first
- 1:44:35time this year.
- 1:44:42Now Spani takes his sign from
- 1:44:43Canisaro.
- 1:44:45Here's the windup the one two
- 1:44:46delivery a drive hit hard toward
- 1:44:48the alley and left center field.
- 1:44:49It'll be in for a base hit.
- 1:44:51Christopher running the ball
- 1:44:52down back on the track and
- 1:44:54Shannon goes in the second with
- 1:44:55a long double line drive hit up
- 1:45:02the alley by Mike Shannon for a
- 1:45:03long two base hit.
- 1:45:05That brings up Tim McCarver.
- 1:45:13Tim McCarver has lined out the
- 1:45:15center and single to right one
- 1:45:16hit and two times at bat.
- 1:45:18Now Casey has right hander Gary
- 1:45:20Crowell working in the New York
- 1:45:21Mets bullpen.
- 1:45:31Nobody out Mike Shannon with
- 1:45:32the out Mike Shannon leading off
- 1:45:33second Warren Spon delivers he
- 1:45:36punched the ball off the mound
- 1:45:38comes by the runner will hold it
- 1:45:39second thrown to first he got
- 1:45:41him.
- 1:45:44Tim McCarver was trying to find
- 1:45:46a base hit.
- 1:45:47Nobody in the ballpark was
- 1:45:48looking for a bunch with St.
- 1:45:49Louis three runs behind fast
- 1:45:51fielding by Spani and he threw
- 1:45:54the first in time.
- 1:46:06We are getting the report on
- 1:46:08Ron Hunt now.
- 1:46:10We'll wait until we have the
- 1:46:11complete report to pass it along
- 1:46:13but we can tell you now the news
- 1:46:14is not good.
- 1:46:16Now the pitch to Gibson a swing
- 1:46:18and a miss.
- 1:46:19Frank one Ron Hunt suffered the
- 1:46:22shoulder injury in a collision
- 1:46:24with Bill Gagliano.
- 1:46:29There are many medical words but
- 1:46:31you describe it as a separation
- 1:46:33in the left shoulder and Ron
- 1:46:35will undergo surgery tomorrow.
- 1:46:38So it's been a costly blow for
- 1:46:39the New York Mets.
- 1:46:42Pitch to Bob Gibson one ball and
- 1:46:43one strike.
- 1:46:44Ron Hunt and that's all star
- 1:46:47second baseman suffered a
- 1:46:48shoulder separation in the
- 1:46:49collision with Bill Gagliano.
- 1:46:51Ron will be operated on
- 1:46:54tomorrow.
- 1:46:55Dr. Peter Lamont the Mets team
- 1:46:57physician will not venture an
- 1:47:01estimate as to how long Ron will
- 1:47:03be out until after the
- 1:47:04operation.
- 1:47:05So it's a real joke for the New
- 1:47:07York Mets.
- 1:47:11One ball one strike on Bob
- 1:47:12Gibson.
- 1:47:13Now the pitch by Spani strike a
- 1:47:15screwball in the outside corner.
- 1:47:22It would probably be a
- 1:47:23conservative estimate and we are
- 1:47:24doing nothing but guessing and
- 1:47:26predicating it on past injuries
- 1:47:27of a similar nature.
- 1:47:29I would guess Ron will be out
- 1:47:30for about two months.
- 1:47:35One to delivery a looping fly
- 1:47:36ball to short center.
- 1:47:37In comes Ron Swabota.
- 1:47:39He's under it and he makes the
- 1:47:40catch.
- 1:47:41Shannon holding on at second
- 1:47:42base to him and down.
- 1:47:46So Spani at Matty tough in the
- 1:47:47clutch Gibson was two for two as
- 1:47:49he came up and Spani gets him
- 1:47:51on a fly ball in the short
- 1:47:52center.
- 1:47:57Now the hitter is Bill
- 1:47:58Gagliano and the crowd riding
- 1:48:00Gagliano a little bit.
- 1:48:02As a result of this collision
- 1:48:03with Ron.
- 1:48:05Inaffairness was called and a
- 1:48:07run denied the St. Louis
- 1:48:08Cardinals.
- 1:48:09Gagliano certainly did not do
- 1:48:11it deliberately.
- 1:48:12Now the pitcher on the way line
- 1:48:14drive a base hit by Gagliano
- 1:48:16rounding third is Shannon.
- 1:48:18He'll come down the line to
- 1:48:19score the play goes into second
- 1:48:21and it's a three to one ball
- 1:48:22game.
- 1:48:23Bill Gagliano singling the left
- 1:48:25scoring Mike Shannon.
- 1:48:30Matter of fact when Gagliano
- 1:48:32collided with Ron the batter
- 1:48:34was Lou Brock one of the fastest
- 1:48:36men in baseball.
- 1:48:37That was just about the only way
- 1:48:39on that ground ball that the
- 1:48:40Cardinals could not have scored
- 1:48:41a run.
- 1:48:47Now the hitter is Lou Brock.
- 1:48:49Louis sacrificed to ground it
- 1:48:51out reached on a fielder's
- 1:48:52choice as the result of the
- 1:48:53collision.
- 1:48:54Here's the pitch on the way a
- 1:48:56swing and a miss.
- 1:48:57Thank one.
- 1:49:08That's three and the Cardinals
- 1:49:12one were at the top of the
- 1:49:13seventh inning.
- 1:49:14Now Spaniard has his sign from
- 1:49:17Chris Gagliano leading off first
- 1:49:19base and the pitcher on the way
- 1:49:22is inside he has to step back
- 1:49:24a stride one ball one strike.
- 1:49:25One ball one strike.
- 1:49:43Now the pitcher on the way a
- 1:49:44drive it deep the right center
- 1:49:46field.
- 1:49:47This one is up and going.
- 1:49:48It is gone.
- 1:49:49It's a home run to tie the ball
- 1:50:05game.
- 1:50:06Hey Louis has rally to tie the
- 1:50:07ball game.
- 1:50:08Lou Brock hitting a tremendous
- 1:50:09home run the right center field
- 1:50:11a planning Ryan drive over the
- 1:50:13wall and right third home run of
- 1:50:15the year.
- 1:50:16His 12th and 13th runs out of
- 1:50:18the game and the ball game is
- 1:50:20now tied three to three.
- 1:50:22Batter is Kurt Club the
- 1:50:23center fielder.
- 1:50:28Funny and always wind up.
- 1:50:30Here's the pitch on the way and
- 1:50:31it's over a strike on the
- 1:50:32outside corner.
- 1:50:33You know midnight tonight is the
- 1:50:35cut down date tonight.
- 1:50:37The hour that all the major
- 1:50:39league ballgloves must reduce
- 1:50:40their squad to twenty five men.
- 1:50:45Slow bounding ball hit the
- 1:50:46shortstop charge by McVillain.
- 1:50:47He strikes and grows in time.
- 1:50:52The San Luis unloading the
- 1:50:54heavy artillery ties the game
- 1:50:56on the seventh inning three runs
- 1:50:58on a single double in the home
- 1:50:59run three runs three hits no
- 1:51:01errors none left on seven
- 1:51:03winning stretch.
- 1:51:04Damn here at Shea Stadium the
- 1:51:05crowd getting to their feet to
- 1:51:06score at the end of six and a
- 1:51:08half St. Louis three and the New
- 1:51:10York Mets three.
- 1:51:12It's hard to imagine New York
- 1:51:13City without every kind of jazz
- 1:51:15from Dixieland of aggressive
- 1:51:17fortunately you don't have to
- 1:51:19listen.
- 1:51:30That's Backstreet Rag a uniquely
- 1:51:32American sound.
- 1:51:34It came up the Mississippi out
- 1:51:35of New Orleans with the Negro
- 1:51:37jazz men who played it to the
- 1:51:38world but they didn't stop with
- 1:51:40Dixieland and the blues.
- 1:51:42Little David's Fugue by John
- 1:51:52Lewis is a new sound that's part
- 1:51:54of a new generation but whether
- 1:51:56it's the old jazz or the new
- 1:51:58it's thirsty work for the
- 1:51:59musicians and when they put
- 1:52:01down their instruments they'll
- 1:52:02pick up a cold beer often
- 1:52:04wrangled extra dry.
- 1:52:06In fact in New York City where
- 1:52:08there are more kinds of jazz
- 1:52:09than in any other city in the
- 1:52:10world.
- 1:52:12More people drink Wrangle than
- 1:52:13any other beer.
- 1:52:14Why do so many people like
- 1:52:15Wrangle.
- 1:52:16We don't know but we must be
- 1:52:18doing something right.
- 1:52:22One spot leading up last half of
- 1:52:24the semifinal and he takes high
- 1:52:26ball one.
- 1:52:28We were mentioning earlier that
- 1:52:29the Major League teams must
- 1:52:30pair to 25 by midnight tonight.
- 1:52:35Here's the pitch on the way
- 1:52:36inside and high ball to the Mets
- 1:52:39although the names have not been
- 1:52:41announced as yet undoubtedly have
- 1:52:42made their decisions as we are
- 1:52:43close to midnight.
- 1:52:45The crippling entry to Ron Hunt
- 1:52:47probably will mean that Ron will
- 1:52:49have to go on a disabled list.
- 1:52:50Now will cause the thinking to
- 1:52:53be altered.
- 1:52:56Ron suffering a shoulder
- 1:52:57separation will undergo surgery
- 1:52:59tomorrow.
- 1:53:01Fastball over a call strike gets
- 1:53:02two and one.
- 1:53:05I'm sure that Ron will be out of
- 1:53:06the lineup at least a month and
- 1:53:07probably longer.
- 1:53:12Do one delivery inside the
- 1:53:13highest ball three.
- 1:53:15If a player is placed on the
- 1:53:16disabled list he must remain
- 1:53:17there at least 30 days.
- 1:53:20The Mets have a Kevin Collins
- 1:53:21on the disabled list right now.
- 1:53:23Kevin was operated on shortly
- 1:53:25after the season got underway.
- 1:53:30Three and one the count.
- 1:53:31Here's the pitch by Gibson foul
- 1:53:33back into the screen amount of
- 1:53:34play.
- 1:53:36Now the word has been flashed on
- 1:53:38the message board in right
- 1:53:39center field to notify the big
- 1:53:41crowd of about twenty five
- 1:53:42thousand here at Shea.
- 1:53:44Ron Hunt has a complete
- 1:53:45separation of the left shoulder.
- 1:53:49His return to the lineup will be
- 1:53:50classified as indefinite.
- 1:53:56Three and two on Spani Gibson's
- 1:53:57pitch ball four hits inside and
- 1:54:00Spani walks for the second time.
- 1:54:02He drew a key walk in the fifth
- 1:54:04inning.
- 1:54:16Bob Gibson now has walked for
- 1:54:18a struck out five allowed three
- 1:54:20runs given up seven hits.
- 1:54:29Now the batter is Bobby Klaus.
- 1:54:30Bobby's had a good night at the
- 1:54:31play with a single and a double
- 1:54:33in three times at bat.
- 1:54:35Ken Boyer and close at third
- 1:54:36looking for the sacrifice but
- 1:54:40he's around the bunt doesn't
- 1:54:42offer it's over strike one.
- 1:54:57Charlie Smith the on deck
- 1:54:58batter and then Johnny Lewis
- 1:55:09now the stretch a pitch out
- 1:55:11nothing was on one ball one
- 1:55:13strike on Bobby Klaus.
- 1:55:16So this certainly has been a
- 1:55:18hard luck year for one of the
- 1:55:20strappiest players in the game.
- 1:55:22Ron Hunt Ron was battle in
- 1:55:25spring training due to an injury
- 1:55:27to his right hand and had just
- 1:55:28gotten back in a swing and a
- 1:55:30miss on a curve one ball and two
- 1:55:32strikes.
- 1:55:41Real good ball game going here
- 1:55:43tonight between the Mets and the
- 1:55:44world champions and is tied three
- 1:55:46to three.
- 1:55:47Gibson's pitch on the way a
- 1:55:48swing and a miss he struck him
- 1:55:49out.
- 1:55:50Bobby struck out by Gibson that
- 1:55:52is his sixth strike out of the
- 1:55:53game.
- 1:56:00Charlie Smith coming up Charlie
- 1:56:01beat out an infield hit the
- 1:56:02shortstop his only time at bat
- 1:56:04in the sixth inning.
- 1:56:18Fastball outside one ball no
- 1:56:20strikes.
- 1:56:23Charlie with good power the
- 1:56:24cardinal outfield rather deep
- 1:56:26and around toward left.
- 1:56:27The wind tonight has been from
- 1:56:29left across toward right.
- 1:56:31Curve is foul tipped.
- 1:56:42One ball one strike on Charlie
- 1:56:43with Johnny Lewis on Deacon and
- 1:56:45Joe Christopher.
- 1:56:59Fastball a strike on the outside
- 1:57:00corner now one and two on Charlie
- 1:57:02Smith.
- 1:57:15Bill White holes against Warren
- 1:57:16Spahn the curve is over strike
- 1:57:18three.
- 1:57:20But he did not like the call.
- 1:57:23Now walk slowly away and that's
- 1:57:24the seventh strikeout for Bob
- 1:57:26Gibson.
- 1:57:29Gibson among the top three in
- 1:57:32strikeouts at the end of last
- 1:57:33season in the National League.
- 1:57:37La Ville of the Pirates with
- 1:57:39two hundred and fifty won the
- 1:57:40strikeout championship.
- 1:57:42Gibson in second place was only
- 1:57:44five behind him.
- 1:57:46Now Johnny Lewis up Johnny has
- 1:57:47one for three and Gibson steps
- 1:57:50off holding spot.
- 1:57:53Spahn has really had a workout
- 1:58:00tonight.
- 1:58:01Swing and a miss strike one and
- 1:58:02Johnny gave that one the big
- 1:58:03rep.
- 1:58:14Now Bob Gibson in the stop
- 1:58:15position delivers to Johnny
- 1:58:16Lewis a breaking ball outside
- 1:58:19one ball and one strike on
- 1:58:20Lewis.
- 1:58:23Johnny hit a line single into
- 1:58:24right field and later scored a
- 1:58:25run in the sixth inning.
- 1:58:28Prior to that he fly deep to
- 1:58:29left and grounded out the
- 1:58:30second.
- 1:58:40Now Johnny elects to step out.
- 1:58:50Warren Spahn grabs his lead off
- 1:58:51first.
- 1:58:52Here's the pitch to Lewis a
- 1:58:53change up the off speed pitch is
- 1:58:55down low and the count goes to
- 1:58:56two and one.
- 1:59:09Two one delivery too high on a
- 1:59:10breaking ball it goes to three
- 1:59:12and one.
- 1:59:26Now Johnny Cox the bat the three
- 1:59:27one pitch too high ball four and
- 1:59:29the Mets have two men on Joe
- 1:59:31Christopher.
- 1:59:45Five walks given up by Bob
- 1:59:46Gibson.
- 1:59:47Now there are runners on first
- 1:59:48and second two men away in the
- 1:59:49batter is Joe Christopher Joe
- 1:59:52helped to build two runs with a
- 1:59:54beautiful sacrifice run in the
- 1:59:55last inning.
- 1:59:57He's brought it down the third
- 1:59:58baseline advancing Charlie
- 1:59:59Smith and Johnny Lewis in the
- 2:00:01scoring position.
- 2:00:02Later Roy McMillan double both
- 2:00:04men home.
- 2:00:05Now the pitch to Joe.
- 2:00:06Ground ball hammered to short
- 2:00:08stop.
- 2:00:09Brody's up with it.
- 2:00:10Fires the second force play on
- 2:00:11Lewis the side is out.

- 2:03:14hit into a key double play now
- 2:03:19the pitch fast funny just a
- 2:03:21little bit under the knees one
- 2:03:22ball and no strike ball game now
- 2:03:29in the closing stages and both
- 2:03:30managers red shandies and Casey
- 2:03:32Stinkle have their bullpen
- 2:03:33working ball to two and oh
- 2:03:38knuckleball veteran Barney
- 2:03:40Schultz is warming up for St.
- 2:03:42Louis and the bullpen for the
- 2:03:44New York Mets Dennis Raybant and
- 2:03:46Carl Willie Carl Willie and
- 2:03:51Tug McGraw divided the pitching
- 2:03:53duties in the game against the
- 2:03:54cadets at West Point yesterday
- 2:03:57the Mets winning eight to
- 2:03:58nothing and that too was a
- 2:04:00costly day because the grand
- 2:04:02old professor Casey Stinkle
- 2:04:04suffered a broken wrist and he
- 2:04:07will have his right wrist in a
- 2:04:08cast from his thumb up to his
- 2:04:10elbow for probably five or six
- 2:04:11weeks now Spahn goes over the
- 2:04:21head the two oh delivery a drive
- 2:04:24hit deep it may go foul down the
- 2:04:25left field line it's a foul ball
- 2:04:30breaking ball a bold foul down
- 2:04:32the left field line and the
- 2:04:33count two and one the Mets were
- 2:04:38out in front three to nothing at
- 2:04:39the end of the cardinals came
- 2:04:42back to score three in the seventh
- 2:04:43on a double by Shannon a single

- 2:04:47homer by Lou Brock
- 2:05:04one out of nobody on to one
- 2:05:06delivery it's over at the knees
- 2:05:08for a strike two balls and two
- 2:05:10strikes
- 2:05:15funny has won two and lost two
- 2:05:17both of his victories on the West
- 2:05:19Coast for a one run win
- 2:05:24outside the screwball just
- 2:05:26missing and the count goes full
- 2:05:27three and two
- 2:05:42now the payoff delivery line down
- 2:05:44the right field line and it's a
- 2:05:46fair ball going into the corner
- 2:05:48now for an extra base hit Lewis
- 2:05:50for throwing it growth is around
- 2:05:51second he's flying toward third
- 2:05:53there'll be no place lives out
- 2:05:55of trouble
- 2:06:00line shot hit down the right
- 2:06:02field line by right hand batter
- 2:06:04Dick Grody's a right field
- 2:06:05hitting expert and now the
- 2:06:08Cardinals have the potential lead
- 2:06:09run on third with one man out and
- 2:06:12the ever dangerous Bill White
- 2:06:13coming on to hit that ball hit
- 2:06:17right on the right field line
- 2:06:26now the Mets will have to bring
- 2:06:27the infield end to try and cut
- 2:06:29off the run the game tied three
- 2:06:32three and Bill White is the
- 2:06:33batter we're in the eighth inning
- 2:06:48Bill White has been struck out
- 2:06:49lined out to second and grounded
- 2:06:51out to second
- 2:06:57the infield camp tight on the edge
- 2:06:59of the infield grass now Warren's
- 2:07:03farm is into his land at the
- 2:07:05pitch to white missed the inside
- 2:07:07corner he's cut him off with a
- 2:07:09fastball one ball and no strike
- 2:07:23outfield rather deep and around
- 2:07:25arrival the infield pulled in with
- 2:07:26the runner on third one down low
- 2:07:29and inside it's ball to two balls
- 2:07:31with no strikes on white
- 2:07:39Bill had a slow start last year
- 2:07:41and then he hit a ton from the
- 2:07:42all-star break to the end of the
- 2:07:43year to help the Cardinals to the
- 2:07:44championship
- 2:07:51Bonnie has the runner at third the
- 2:07:52two-oh pitch ball three Genizaro
- 2:07:56Blossom throw down to Charlie
- 2:07:57Smith at third and now Warren has
- 2:07:59gone behind on white three and oh
- 2:08:01right fielder Mike Shannon is the
- 2:08:03on deck batter
- 2:08:20Warren out of his lined up three
- 2:08:22oh delivery ball for and he walks
- 2:08:24white on four pitches
- 2:08:36that is the fourth walk given up
- 2:08:38by as funny now the mess will play
- 2:08:40the infield halfway and hope for a
- 2:08:42shot at the double play that could
- 2:08:45be a good one press the button on
- 2:08:50the escape that Shannon a very fast
- 2:08:52man not an easy man to double up
- 2:08:54he's a full hitter the infield in
- 2:08:57the outfield play him around the
- 2:08:58left of the infield set halfway now
- 2:09:01the stretch the pitch to Shannon
- 2:09:04low and outside ball one finally
- 2:09:07will be trying to make him hit the
- 2:09:08breaking ball looking for that
- 2:09:24grounder Mike Shannon started the
- 2:09:25card open now the pitch on the way
- 2:09:31knee high strike one ball one strike
- 2:09:39that growth is on third base Bill
- 2:09:42White on first one man out Bobby
- 2:09:47Klaus shaded towards second against
- 2:09:50Shannon the pole hitter and Roy
- 2:09:51McMillan playing a stride over
- 2:09:53toward the hole on the left side of
- 2:09:54the family in the dirt blocked by
- 2:10:01Canada's arrow Chris keeps the ball
- 2:10:02in front of him no advance in the
- 2:10:05count two and one
- 2:10:22mighty crucial moment right here for
- 2:10:23the New York Mets runners at first
- 2:10:26and third one out Shannon the
- 2:10:27batter McCriver is on deck now
- 2:10:32Spahn comes into the set position
- 2:10:35delivers two and one down low it's
- 2:10:37ball three body is not a while he is
- 2:10:41just going all out to make the
- 2:10:44batter hit a breaking ball right
- 2:10:45down around the knees as he looks
- 2:10:47for that double play ball now it's
- 2:11:01three and one on Shannon the
- 2:11:06runners take a lead three one pitch
- 2:11:09ball for that loads them up the bases
- 2:11:12are loaded and Tim McCarver is coming
- 2:11:14up five walks in the game that
- 2:11:19by Spahn he had that is an unusual
- 2:11:21number of walks for him in a ball
- 2:11:22game prior to this ball game that
- 2:11:33you can imagine it Spahn had walked
- 2:11:36only three men in forty one innings
- 2:11:39tonight one now has walked five
- 2:11:42mighty troublesome situation the bases
- 2:11:46loaded one out McCarver is the batter
- 2:11:49sidearm delivery of Scribler foul off
- 2:11:51to the right no play at strike one on
- 2:11:53Tim McCarver
- 2:12:02that road is on third bill white on
- 2:12:04second Mike Shannon on first
- 2:12:12Tim McCarver has lined the center
- 2:12:14single to right and fouled out on a
- 2:12:16bun attempt he was running for a base
- 2:12:17hit
- 2:12:24now Spahn he looks the runner grog
- 2:12:26back to third down comes his fifth a
- 2:12:29slow ground ball on the right side of
- 2:12:30the dam and the only play will be at
- 2:12:32first to run scores ball was not hit
- 2:12:35sharply enough to give them as a chance
- 2:12:36for a double play to bail out of it so
- 2:12:39growth comes in to score the Cardinals
- 2:12:40around in front four to three Tim
- 2:12:43McCarver is thrown out by Bobby Klaus
- 2:12:47so Spahn he got the batter to do what
- 2:12:49he wanted him to do hit the ball in the
- 2:12:50ground but it was not hit hard enough to
- 2:12:52give the Mets a shot at the double play
- 2:12:56run batted in for Tim McCarver and a
- 2:13:00dangerous hitter the Cardinal pitcher
- 2:13:02Bob Gibson is up he has two for three
- 2:13:05runners on second and third swing and a
- 2:13:07miss thank one
- 2:13:20bill white is on third Mike Shannon on
- 2:13:22second two men out St. Louis in front
- 2:13:27four to three a Spahn swings out of his
- 2:13:29windup now the pitch foul ball back over
- 2:13:32our broadcasting booth and out of play
- 2:13:35but now Spahn with a two strike count on
- 2:13:37Gibson
- 2:13:54Bonnie trying to work out of it
- 2:13:56glances the lead runner back at third
- 2:13:58now goes over the head and the pitch to
- 2:14:00Gibson is a pop-up in the short left
- 2:14:02back goes McMillan back he goes back
- 2:14:04he goes oh what a catch he's got it he
- 2:14:07topples over but he holds on to it
- 2:14:16somersaulting catch by Roy McMillan on
- 2:14:18the bid for a Texas Lake Bay set a pop
- 2:14:21fly into short left field almost beyond
- 2:14:24the reach of Roy and after a long run
- 2:14:27he learns he grabbed a somersaulted he
- 2:14:30held on to it and the side is out one
- 2:14:32run one hit that was a triple by Dick
- 2:14:35Grode with one man out no errors and two
- 2:14:38left on and the score at the end of seven
- 2:14:41and a half innings the St. Louis Cardinals
- 2:14:43four and the New York Mets three and now
- 2:14:47it's time for another unusual fact from
- 2:14:50the Viceroy Hall of Records you know the
- 2:14:53way managers shuffle their lineups in
- 2:14:55modern baseball here's a record we think
- 2:14:58will stand for a long long time when
- 2:15:01Connie Mack was managing the Philadelphia
- 2:15:03A's they played two complete World Series
- 2:15:06using only nine men and each ballgame
- 2:15:09not even a relief pitcher. Connie went
- 2:15:12with his best and he needed no
- 2:15:14substitutes and in the filter cigarette
- 2:15:17league you'll never want a substitute
- 2:15:19for Viceroy because Viceroy specifically
- 2:15:21designed to taste the way you'd like a
- 2:15:23filter cigarette to taste not too strong
- 2:15:26like some brands that taste as if they
- 2:15:28didn't have a filter and not too light
- 2:15:31like some others you know the kind they
- 2:15:34just don't seem to satisfy your taste
- 2:15:36but you line up a Viceroy you get the
- 2:15:39filter cigarette that's not too strong
- 2:15:41not too light Viceroy has got the filter
- 2:15:44for the taste that's right.
- 2:15:47Viceroy's got the taste that's right
- 2:15:50not too strong and not too light
- 2:15:53so taste that's right.
- 2:15:57Eddie Cranebool leading off the last of the eighth inning hits one off the bat handle
- 2:16:02a glooping drive and a short left rough
- 2:16:04ace hit. That ball landed just about where the one
- 2:16:07McMillan caught to retire the Cardinals.
- 2:16:09The one hit by Cranebool did not have any
- 2:16:11height to it. It was kind of a soft line drive.
- 2:16:15So Eddie Cranebool is on, nobody out.
- 2:16:18Batter is Ron Swaboda.
- 2:16:20This has been by far and away the toughest night for young Ron.
- 2:16:24He's been up three times and been struck out three.
- 2:16:26He's fast.
- 2:16:318-10 on your dials connected to New York.
- 2:16:33Your New York Mets station.
- 2:16:45Now the Mets are running behind and needing a long ball
- 2:16:48have Jesse Gander batting for Roy McMillan.
- 2:16:51Mack has three for three and a driven two runs in
- 2:16:54but it's percentage baseball against the fireballing right hander.
- 2:16:57And so Casey has Jesse Gander who can hit one out of a ballpark
- 2:17:01stepping in against Gibson.
- 2:17:06Marty Schultz and Ron Taylor are warming up for St. Louis
- 2:17:09any right hand for the Mets.
- 2:17:12Curve is low, one ball and no strike.
- 2:17:22Gibson a fast worker on the mound.
- 2:17:24Cranebool a short lead off first.
- 2:17:27Curve is high, ball two, it's 2-0 on Jesse Gander.
- 2:17:32And that's the first time that young Ron Swaboda has really been overpowered.
- 2:17:37He's not the first hitter by any means to be overpowered by Bob Gibson
- 2:17:41who was second in the national league in strikeouts last year.
- 2:17:45Too high, ball three and he really buzzed that one.
- 2:17:56Jim Hickman coming out on deck to hit the first count of zero.
- 2:18:01Now let's see how the Mets play at this 3-0 on Jesse Gander.
- 2:18:05The Mets are one behind.
- 2:18:07Down the middle he was taking on the count of three and one.
- 2:18:18Three balls and a strike on Jesse Gander.
- 2:18:20Bill White holding against Ed Cranebool.
- 2:18:22Here's the pitch on the way.
- 2:18:24Foul ball, back upstairs and out of play.
- 2:18:27Now it's 3-2.
- 2:18:493-2 on Jesse Gander.
- 2:18:56Now Jesse gets out of the batter's box to get a handful of dirt.
- 2:19:00Break a little bit of the tension here with New York one behind,
- 2:19:03bottom half of the eighth inning.
- 2:19:05Gibson stretching, here's the pitch.
- 2:19:07Ball four, the breaking ball misses.
- 2:19:09Now the tying run goes over to second Eddie Cranebool.
- 2:19:12Gander goes down to first and Jim Hickman is coming up to bat for Chris Cannazero.
- 2:19:18Bill Hickman is coming in the ball game as a runner for Eddie Cranebool.
- 2:19:40So Billy Callahan who can really fly checks him to run for Eddie Cranebool.
- 2:19:45He represents the tying run at second base.
- 2:19:48And Bob Gibson wants to talk this over with Dick Groats.
- 2:19:53Danny Murtaugh always said when he was managing the Pirates that having Dick Groats on the field is like having a manager on the diamond.
- 2:20:02Jim Hickman is batting for Chris Cannazero.
- 2:20:09This has been a ball game and with Gibson has had great stuff, but he has had the battle he's controlled.
- 2:20:13He has walked six, but has struck out eight men.
- 2:20:18Mets trailing four to three. Runners on first and second one out.
- 2:20:25Gibson a flamethrower, Hickman a good fastball hitter.
- 2:20:27Now the pitch on the way. Grounded foul in behind Don Hefner on the lines at third.
- 2:20:37Big gathering here at Shea hoping to be able to come up with that roar if the Mets can deliver a base hit to get Callahan around.
- 2:20:45Callahan turned in one of the finest individual performances in helping the Mets to win the second ball game on Sunday.
- 2:20:52The Mets fans have ever seen. He made a remarkable catch to save the ball game.
- 2:20:57He also as a fence hitter doubled home a run and it was a key run.
- 2:21:09The runners take a short lead. The pitch to Hickman.
- 2:21:12Outside and low McTanner takes it out of the dirt. One ball, one strike.
- 2:21:23Warren Spahn kneeling in the on deck circle.
- 2:21:29The Mets will have a revised lineup of the ninth inning.
- 2:21:32Fastball over a blazer and it counts one ball and two strikes.
- 2:21:46Now Gibson is working in front on the count. It's one ball and two strikes on bench batter Jim Hickman.
- 2:21:52Down comes the pitch. Foul ball, back to the crowd. There'll be no play.
- 2:21:57Count remains the same.
- 2:22:05Now it seems the Mets have had just one exciting one run ball game right after another.
- 2:22:16Now Gibson delivers one and two. Strike three called.
- 2:22:20Hickman has got looking at a fastball on the outside corner.
- 2:22:24That's the ninth strikeout in the ball game.
- 2:22:29Danny Napoleon now is coming out to hit for Warren Spahn.
- 2:22:34Gibson has his ninth strikeout.
- 2:22:38Danny Napoleon, the first year player from Trenton, New Jersey, is coming out to hit against Gibson.
- 2:22:43The Cardinals gather at the mound because they have never seen Danny Napoleon in a regular season ball game.
- 2:22:49They did see him during the spring.
- 2:22:51The Mets and the Cardinals played five games in the area of St. Petersburg.
- 2:22:56So manager Red Shandies goes to the mound to be sure that the Cardinals remember this young fellow from the games down south.
- 2:23:11Casey now sending up his third straight pinch hitter.
- 2:23:16Red Shandies is motioning to Shannon, the right fielder, and he wants him to play him a little more toward right center.
- 2:23:27But now Shannon is moving over toward right center against Danny Napoleon, which is quite a tribute to Danny against one of the hardest throwers in baseball.
- 2:23:35Red figures his bat is fast enough to get around.
- 2:23:40Now the stretch. Pitch to Napoleon. Swing and a miss, strike one.
- 2:23:48Gibson has won five and lost none. He's had three shutouts and five victories.
- 2:23:59Here's the pitcher on the way. It's right in there at the knees for a tall strike.
- 2:24:04So now Danny Napoleon will have to really battle Gibson out in front of him with a two-strike count.
- 2:24:18Mets have played 25 games, 11 of their 25 decided by one run.
- 2:24:24Foul ball, wafted back up toward the mezzanine section. No play, and the count remains strike two on Danny Napoleon.
- 2:24:42Gibson ready in the two-strike pitch, and it's a high fly ball to center field.
- 2:24:47Center fielder Kurt Flood is under it. He taps the glove and puts it away, the side is out.
- 2:24:52Now Napoleon flies to center after falling behind on a two-strike pitch, and the side is out of the eighth inning.
- 2:24:59No runs, one hit, no errors, two left on.
- 2:25:02At the end of eight innings to score, the St. Louis Cardinals four and the New York Mets three.
- 2:25:09Day game tomorrow between New York and St. Louis with Jack Fisher pitching against Kurt Simmons.
- 2:25:14Thursday, an open date. Friday night the Reds are here starting a four-game weekend series.
- 2:25:19Tickets on sale at the advanced sale window here at Shea Stadium in midtown Manhattan in the Long Island Railroad waiting room at Penn Station
- 2:25:27at Grand Central Terminal at the foot of the 42nd Street and Vanderbilt Avenue ramp.
- 2:25:32The Mets also have tickets available and on sale at Macy's in the Wal-Wilson Shopping Center in Huntington.
- 2:25:39Reservations for box and reserve seats can be made at all Howard Clothes stores in the greater New York area.
- 2:25:50Now Wes Westrom bringing the revised lineup out to the home plate umpire Augie Donatelli.
- 2:25:56Jim Hickman is now playing first base.
- 2:26:04Catcher has not appeared as yet. Bobby Klaus remains at second.
- 2:26:08Charlie Smith will now be playing short.
- 2:26:12Danny Napoleon will be at third.
- 2:26:16Denny Rybant is coming on to pitch and Jesse Gander will be behind to play.
- 2:26:22So it's a completely revised infield for the New York Mets as we go to the ninth inning.
- 2:26:32Warren Spahn leaving the ballgame for a pinch hitter after eight innings.
- 2:26:38Another solid effort by Warren Spahn.
- 2:26:42Spahn is controlled not nearly as sharp tonight as it has been at each of his previous outings.
- 2:26:49But he really had the grit and determination and stayed with it all the way.
- 2:26:52It was a ballgame which Spahn had to scramble because the ball wasn't going exactly where he wanted it to
- 2:26:57but he turned in still even without his good control and other fine pitching performance.
- 2:27:02Spahn had walked only three minutes and 41 innings prior to tonight.
- 2:27:06But in tonight's ballgame he walked five and eight innings.
- 2:27:24Kenny Rybant is the new pitcher.
- 2:27:27There on the last of the seventh inning in Philadelphia the Reds lead the Phillies 3-1
- 2:27:32in the duel between John Saturas and Chris Short.
- 2:27:35Pittsburgh leading Milwaukee 3-2 as they go to the seventh inning.
- 2:27:39McBean has relieved Cardwell. Blasting game for Milwaukee.
- 2:27:42Houston plays at Los Angeles.
- 2:27:44McKensar at San Francisco.
- 2:27:47There on the last of the eighth inning at Fenway Park the Yankees lead the Red Sox 5-3 behind Staddlemire.
- 2:27:53Phil Gagliano leading off as we go to the ninth inning and Rybant's first pitch is over strike one.
- 2:28:02Kenny has won one and lost one and has been very impressive as a late inning man.
- 2:28:07Low outside, one ball, one strike.
- 2:28:10He saved a victory for the Mets and Jack Fisher in the opener of the Milwaukee series.
- 2:28:18And he turned in a solid performance to get credit for an official save and a victory at San Francisco.
- 2:28:28Gagliano had one of the big hits for the Cardinals in the seventh inning.
- 2:28:34It's over for a call strike, one ball and two strikes.
- 2:28:38Washington leads Detroit 5-0 after five and a half behind Frank Kreitzer.
- 2:28:44In second and second two, Baltimore 1, as they go to the ninth in Baltimore, Bell has relieved Terry.
- 2:28:51Swing and a miss, he struck him out.
- 2:28:53Then he arrived at fans, Phil Gagliano.
- 2:29:08One out and nobody on and that brings up Lou Brock.
- 2:29:11Brock's third home run of the year, a line drive to deep right center with a man on was a big blow for St. Louis in the seventh inning.
- 2:29:17He had tied the game 3-3.
- 2:29:19Just inside, one ball, no strikes.
- 2:29:23The Cardinals went out in front for the first time in the ball game of the eighth inning when Dick Brode tripled to ranch field with one man out.
- 2:29:29He later came in to score on a ground ball, hit the second by Tim McCarver.
- 2:29:36Ball two outside and low, 2-0.
- 2:29:52Now right back into his windup, down comes the special grounder, hit hard down to first grab by Hickman.
- 2:29:57He takes it himself.
- 2:30:00Ball hits sharply but right at Jim Hickman, Jim grabbed it on a big hop, stepped on the bag, two men down.
- 2:30:07Well Casey and his coaches and the executive branch will all have to get together after tonight's ball game.
- 2:30:14Revise their thinking as a result of a costly injury to Ron Hunt.
- 2:30:19Ron and a collision with Gagliano suffered a shoulder separation and will be operated on tomorrow.
- 2:30:27Right end for a call strike to Kurt Flug.
- 2:30:32Midnight tonight is the cut down for all the major league ball clubs.
- 2:30:35They have to be down to 25.
- 2:30:40Low and outside, one ball, one strike.
- 2:30:44Ron will undoubtedly have to go on the disabled list.
- 2:30:47When a player goes on he must remain for 30 days but Ron must undergo surgery so it's safe to say he'll be out at least 30 days.
- 2:30:54We hope it won't be too much more than that but an injury like that, probably a couple of months.
- 2:31:09One ball, one strike on Kurt Flug.
- 2:31:11Kurt has one for three.
- 2:31:14Rybance 1-1 delivery, under the knees, two balls and a strike.
- 2:31:33Now Denny swings out of his windup.
- 2:31:35The pitcher on the way is popped up.
- 2:31:36He hit him off the fist with a real good pitch.
- 2:31:39Under the ball is Danny Napoleon.
- 2:31:40He has it, the side is out.
- 2:31:42Danny coming in toward the mound to take the pop up.
- 2:31:45And Denny Rybank gets to do it.
- 2:31:46Birds one, two, three.
- 2:31:48No runs, no hits, no errors and none left on.
- 2:31:51We'll be going to the bottom of the match.
- 2:31:52New York a run behind.
- 2:31:54At the end of 8 1 1 2 it's the Cardinals four and the Mets three.
- 2:31:59If you're wondering what kind of a song goes with Soprano and Salchichi, listen to this.
- 2:32:06Come on, come on, come on.
- 2:32:17Come facete mamma età is sure to be sung when Italian Americans get together.
- 2:32:22And spicy pizza rustica will be served.
- 2:32:25The inevitable result is a fiery thirst.
- 2:32:28Come on, come on, come on.
- 2:32:42This song brings on the beer, probably Reingold.
- 2:32:45In New York City where there are more Italians than in Naples, more people drink Reingold extra dry than any other beer.
- 2:32:52And Reingold is going great in New Jersey, New England and Pennsylvania too.
- 2:32:57Why do Italian Americans like Reingold?
- 2:32:59We don't know, but we must be doing something right.
- 2:33:09Bottom half of the ninth inning the Mets will have Bobby Klaus, Charlie Smith, Johnny Lewis coming up against Bob Gibson.
- 2:33:15The right hander winds pitches.
- 2:33:17Check swing and it's outside. One ball and no strikes.
- 2:33:21Good ball game for Bobby. He has a single and a double, two for four and an RBI.
- 2:33:30Mets have three runs, eight hits off Gibson.
- 2:33:33Fastball, a strike on the outside corner. One ball, one strike.
- 2:33:45One-one delivery. Foul ball back into the screen. Now it's one and two.
- 2:33:50Dow Maxville is now playing second. He relieves.
- 2:33:53Phil Gagliano has a defensive move on the part of Red Shandies.
- 2:34:04Pitching one and two. A line drive, a base hit to the left and the tying run is on with nobody out.
- 2:34:10Bobby has his third hit of the ball game.
- 2:34:12That'll bring up Charlie Smith and while we're waiting for Charlie, we'll pause for station identification.
- 2:34:18This is the New York Mets baseball network.
- 2:34:22And this is your voice of the Mets in the Northeast, 8-10 on your dial, WGY, the General Electric Station.
- 2:34:34Bob Murphy with Lindsey Nelson and Ralph Kiner. The Mets have the tying run on. Nobody out. Charlie Smith is up.
- 2:34:41Boy, you're in close looking for the bun. Now the pitch.
- 2:34:44Back toward the mound. Gibson up with it and the play goes to first base in time.
- 2:34:48He started to go to second and at the last moment he held his arm up in midair.
- 2:34:52He was almost turning it loose and then decided to go to first base and not take the chance.
- 2:34:58Now the Mets will have Johnny Lewis and Joe Christopher to try and get that tying run home.
- 2:35:06Fun play going from Gibson to Maxwell who covered it first.
- 2:35:13Johnny Lewis has one hit a single in three times at that astronaut walk.
- 2:35:24Now Gibson slowing the pace down a little bit for the first time.
- 2:35:27Comes to the set position, delivers a high foul fly hit down the right field and there'll be no play.
- 2:35:34Dan Hefner on the coaching lands at first thought that Gibson had balked on the play.
- 2:35:50Now we wait for a moment as Billy Cowan hustles out in the bullpen to help out.
- 2:35:54Billy has already been used in the ballgame. He came in as a fence runner.
- 2:36:03Here's Taylor and Yogi Barrow all that remains of the bench for the New York Mets.
- 2:36:07Here's the pitch. Outside one ball one strike and the hawk is coming in now.
- 2:36:14Billy Cowan went out to take over his work in the bullpen and the hawk is coming in.
- 2:36:23Benny Rybant has painful spot in the batting order. A ground ball hit toward the middle.
- 2:36:34Runners on first and third.
- 2:36:45A base hit for Johnny Lewis. He hit a ground ball right up the middle.
- 2:36:49It wasn't stunned. It wasn't hit too hard and Groda after a long gallop to his left side came up with it.
- 2:36:55He had to throw off Ballison's hand and get something on it. The throw was not nearly in time.
- 2:37:00And the Mets have runners at first and third. Bobby Klaus with a go over to third and Joe Christopher coming up.
- 2:37:11That was the 10th hit of the ballgame for New York and a big crowd standing.
- 2:37:19Klaus the lead runner. He's the tying run at third. One man down.
- 2:37:24Yenfield set for two. Inside ball one.
- 2:37:29Ron Taylor a right hander. Steve Farrell's in a left hander warming for St. Louis.
- 2:37:35They're getting their bullpen ready now because Benny Rybant is due up next and Jim Besky is warming up.
- 2:37:43Gibson in a set position delivers a swing and a miss on a breaking ball. One ball one strike on Joe Christopher.
- 2:37:52One drill stacked right on top of another.
- 2:37:57Runners at first and third. One man out. Cardinal family in field at double play depth.
- 2:38:02Yenfield just about straight away. Now Gibson set the one one pitch.
- 2:38:07A ground ball hit the shortstop. Joe Christopher the second one.
- 2:38:10That's still the first. Double play. The ballgame is over.
- 2:38:14Joe Christopher's ground ball to Dick Rode is turned into a game winning double play by veteran shortstop Dick Rode.
- 2:38:21And the Cardinals win a thriller by a score of four to three.
- 2:38:25Bob Gibson weathering the storm and going all the way to win his sixth ballgame without a loss.
- 2:38:31In the ninth inning as the Mets threw a king sized scare into the World Championship Redbirds.
- 2:38:36For New York no runs, two hits, no errors and one left on.
- 2:38:41So the big crowd of nearly 25,000 almost limp now as they head toward the exits of Shea Stadium.
- 2:38:48The Mets have just played their 12th ballgame decided by one run in only their 25th ballgame of the young baseball season.
- 2:38:57This was a game in which the Mets went out in front by a score of one to nothing when they got the game's first run in the fifth inning.
- 2:39:07When Roy McMillan got the second of his three hits, Warren Sponger the first of his two walks.
- 2:39:12And Bobby Klaus double to right center field driving home the first run his base hit scoring Roy McMillan.
- 2:39:19The Mets made it three to nothing in the sixth inning on base hits by Charlie Smith and Johnny Lewis.
- 2:39:26A good sacrifice by Joe Christopher moved the runners up and Roy McMillan's double to right center field drove in both Charlie Smith and Johnny Lewis.
- 2:39:35That made it three to nothing. The Cardinals came right back in the seventh inning to tie up the ballgame.
- 2:39:41Mike Shannon double to left center leading off.
- 2:39:44Phil Gagliano single to left scoring Mike Shannon and Lou Brock hit his third home run of the year a drive to right center scoring two runs to tie the game 3-3.
- 2:39:54The Cardinals got the winning run in the eighth inning when Dick Grove tripled with a line drive that hit right on the line going down the right field line.
- 2:40:02He came in to score on a slow hit ground ball on the right side of the diamond by Tim McCarver.
- 2:40:06McCarver was thrown out. The ball was not hit sharp enough to give the Mets a chance to go for two and get out of the inning.
- 2:40:13And so the Redbirds win a real thriller with Bob Gibson going all the way to win his sixth game of the year without a setback.
- 2:40:22The losing pitcher, and he pitched well once again in a real thriller, Warren Spahn.
- 2:40:27Spahn has been in one one run decision right after another. So Warren now has won two while losing three.
- 2:40:34The line scorer, St. Louis, four runs, nine hits, no errors, they left eight.
- 2:40:40For the New York Mets three runs, there were ten hits, no errors, and the Mets had nine left on.
- 2:40:47Batting stars for the St. Louis Cardinals, Bill Gagliano singled in their first run, Lou Brockett a two run homer to Tyatt,
- 2:40:55and McCarver's ground ball scored Dick Grove who had set it up with his line triple to right field with the winning run in the top of the eighth inning.
- 2:41:03Tomorrow, game time two o'clock here at Shea Stadium for the Mets, Jack Fisher on the mound.
- 2:41:08For the St. Louis Cardinals it will be Kurt Simmons.
- 2:41:11For those of you who may have joined us late, this could be and has been a very costly victory for the New York Mets.
- 2:41:18For in the fifth inning of the ball game, with Bill Gagliano racing from first towards second and Ron Hunt racing in to field a ground ball hit by Lou Brockett,
- 2:41:27Gagliano and Hunt collided and Ron suffered a separation of the left shoulder, will undergo surgery tomorrow.
- 2:41:34That means that Ron will undoubtedly and unfortunately be out of the lineup probably for about two months.
- 2:41:41It also means the Mets must revise their thinking insofar as reducing their squad to 25 men,
- 2:41:47which is required of all major league ball clubs by midnight tonight.
- 2:41:51So that's the story on the ball game, the final score once again, the St. Louis Cardinals four and the New York Mets three.
