- 1:45Series five, show 42, episode five.
- 1:50Yes.
- 1:51Wednesday.
- 1:52Welcome, everyone, again, to the ever popular inspirations
- 1:57for your life show.
- 1:58I'm John Seymour, a laser entrepreneur, engineer, marketing
- 2:01specialist, video producer, podcast host, coach, passionate, lifelong
- 2:06learner, graduate student at Montclair State University, and
- 2:09so grateful now to be a published author.
- 2:12Our weekly series is Stop Waiting for a
- 2:15Sign.
- 2:16Your freedom starts with action.
- 2:18Saturday, we learn to recognize what's holding us
- 2:21back.
- 2:22Sunday, we learn to choose.
- 2:24Monday, we began to break free.
- 2:27And Tuesday, we learn to stand firm.
- 2:28And today, we learn to trust.
- 2:32Inspired by some great notions that we can
- 2:37become better every day.
- 2:38We're asking a challenging question.
- 2:41Are you seeking wisdom or using the search
- 2:44for another sign to possibly delay a decision?
- 2:48Trust doesn't mean ignoring facts.
- 2:50It means knowing when you're prepared enough to
- 2:53take a responsible step.
- 2:55Let's explore 30 ways, shall we, together to
- 2:58move forward.
- 2:58Are you ready?
- 2:59I know I am ready.
- 3:00Are you ready?
- 3:01Because I think the whole thing, guys, is
- 3:03becoming intentional about what you're doing.
- 3:05And I think when we can become intentional,
- 3:08our life changes immensely, all right?
- 3:11In a positive direction, that is.
- 3:12So, number one, guys, stop expecting certainty before
- 3:18every meaningful step.
- 3:21If you wait until all doubt disappears, you
- 3:23may never begin.
- 3:25Seek reasonable clarity, then move.
- 3:28Number two, number two, recognize when reassurance, okay,
- 3:36when reassurance seeking becomes, well, what can I
- 3:41say, avoidance.
- 3:42And I think that's hard for a lot
- 3:43of people to understand.
- 3:45Asking for advice is healthy.
- 3:48Asking 10 people the same question because you're
- 3:52afraid to choose can keep you stuck.
- 3:54Yes, stuck.
- 3:56Nobody wants to be stuck.
- 3:57Number three, guys, not every decision requires another
- 4:02sign.
- 4:02Sometimes the next step is already clear, but
- 4:06you're hoping someone or something will remove the
- 4:09discomfort of choosing.
- 4:11Number four, trust can grow through responsible action.
- 4:16You don't have to feel fearless first.
- 4:19No, follow through on a manageable commitment and
- 4:22at least experience will follow through to teach
- 4:27you.
- 4:27I think that's an important thing for us
- 4:29to realize.
- 4:30Number four, guys, very important.
- 4:35Understand the difference between faith and wishful thinking.
- 4:39Faith can expire courage and perseverance.
- 4:44Wishful thinking ignores the work and evidence, a
- 4:48decision needs to be made.
- 4:50Number six, guys, use available evidence instead of
- 4:54demanding perfect proof, gather relevant facts, evaluate the
- 5:00risks and recognize the real life in front
- 5:04of you rarely provides a guarantee.
- 5:08Number seven, recognize when you're knowing you've already
- 5:13gathered enough information, more research isn't always more
- 5:17wisdom, sometimes it's simply delaying the moment you
- 5:20must go and decide something.
- 5:23Number eight, stop asking the same question to
- 5:26avoid making a decision.
- 5:27If nothing new has changed, another round of
- 5:30opinions may only restart the cycle of doubt.
- 5:35Number nine, learn folks to distinguish intuition from
- 5:39fear.
- 5:40Intuition may reflect experience, but fear may reflect
- 5:44imagined danger.
- 5:48Psychosomatic in other words, because we have to
- 5:52realize that we have to pause, examine the
- 5:54facts and avoid confusing situations, either feeling that
- 6:00we have or with a certainty we know,
- 6:04nice and cool, refreshing and fresh lemon.
- 6:07Number 10, guys, trust your ability to respond
- 6:10when circumstances change.
- 6:13You don't need to predict every surprise.
- 6:16You need the willingness to learn, adapt, and
- 6:19ask for help when needed.
- 6:22Number 11, guys, understand that uncertainty is part
- 6:25of growth.
- 6:26Now responsibilities are coming with relationships and opportunities
- 6:31that will come without complete instructions.
- 6:34That's not automatically a warning guys.
- 6:37Number 12, stop assuming discomfort means you're on
- 6:40the wrong path.
- 6:42Learning something new can feel awkward.
- 6:45Judge your direction by values and evidence, not
- 6:49discomfort alone.
- 6:51Yeah, not discomfort alone.
- 6:53Number 13, recognized that wisdom often comes through
- 6:58experience.
- 6:59Reading about a challenge helps, but thoughtful participation
- 7:04reveals lessons.
- 7:05You cannot learn from the sidelines.
- 7:07Many people think you can just learn from
- 7:09reading a book or learn from watching a
- 7:12sport.
- 7:12You got to get involved with the sport,
- 7:15guys.
- 7:16You've got to get involved with the sport.
- 7:18I think that's the most important thing that
- 7:20I want to tell you.
- 7:21You got to get involved.
- 7:21Life is a participatory, let's say, activity, right?
- 7:30Number 14, take thoughtful risks rather than reckless
- 7:35ones.
- 7:36Consider consequences, protect what matters, and start with
- 7:39a step whose downside you can reasonably manage.
- 7:46Number 15, stop comparing your timeline with someone
- 7:50else's.
- 7:51Their progress may look faster because you cannot
- 7:54see every obstacle, advantage, or even sacrifice behind
- 7:58it.
- 7:59Number 16, trust the skills you developed through
- 8:04previous challenges.
- 8:05You had these challenges before or one similar
- 8:08to them, and you can overcome these as
- 8:12well.
- 8:13Remember a difficult situation you handled before.
- 8:17Ponder back to it.
- 8:18That experience is evidence right now that you
- 8:21can face uncertainty again and again and again,
- 8:24and you just proved it.
- 8:25That's valid proof.
- 8:28Number 17, recognize when overthinking creates unnecessary doubt.
- 8:33Replaying the same possibilities without new information is
- 8:36not planning, guys.
- 8:38Give decisions a sensible deadline.
- 8:43Don't just keep going in circles.
- 8:44Number 18, allow your values, that's your core
- 8:49values, to guide decisions without guarantees.
- 8:53You may not know the outcome, but you
- 8:56can know whether the choice reflects honesty, responsibility,
- 9:01and purpose.
- 9:04Number 19, understand that confidence often follows action.
- 9:11Waiting to feel confident can trap you.
- 9:14A small completed step gives you something real
- 9:17to build upon.
- 9:19I think that's something that'll make you feel
- 9:21good because when you can reflect back on
- 9:23an action and say, wait a minute, I
- 9:25did this, this is an amazing thing that
- 9:26I did today, and I could do it
- 9:29again and again and again, I think that
- 9:32whole concept gets us to really move forward.
- 9:36But I'm not going to tell you it's
- 9:38easy because it does take some time to
- 9:41be aware of this kind of thing.
- 9:44It does take some thought.
- 9:47It does take some action.
- 9:50I think that's an important piece.
- 9:52Number 20, stop expecting every opportunity to arrive
- 9:56with perfect clarity.
- 9:58Sometimes you discover the next part of the
- 10:00path only after taking the first reasonable step.
- 10:05Number 21, learn to act.
- 10:11Responsibly with incomplete information.
- 10:14That might seem impossible or improbable, but you
- 10:18can do it.
- 10:21You might change your actions later.
- 10:24That's perfectly fine.
- 10:25Act with what you now know.
- 10:29Identify what you must know, what can wait,
- 10:33and when the cost of delay exceeds the
- 10:35benefit of researching.
- 10:37Do what you can do now and act
- 10:40upon that.
- 10:41If you have to change your decision or
- 10:42change how you're doing something, there's nothing wrong
- 10:45with doing that.
- 10:46You could do that next time, but don't
- 10:48let that preclude you from getting started.
- 10:52Does, does that make sense?
- 10:54I'm hoping it does.
- 10:55If that makes sense, you're going to say,
- 10:57wait a minute, John, this is pretty cool.
- 10:59This is pretty amazing.
- 11:01Right?
- 11:03Um, I think that's an important piece.
- 11:09An important piece for us to ponder, for
- 11:11us to reflect upon, right?
- 11:13And if we reflect upon that, then I
- 11:16know we can definitely go somewhere.
- 11:18Right.
- 11:19But I think a lot of people get
- 11:20trapped in the weeds.
- 11:22They get trapped in, let's call it the
- 11:26precursor, uh, webs of confusion.
- 11:31Right.
- 11:32We never get to the prize because we're
- 11:36still trying to figure out how do we
- 11:37unwrap this box?
- 11:39It's like, you need surgical tools just to
- 11:42be able to open it.
- 11:44And so you don't kill yourself trying to
- 11:46just go through the plastic, right?
- 11:47They've made plastic so hard and dangerous to
- 11:53open.
- 11:55Crazy.
- 11:57Number 22, except right now, ladies and gentlemen,
- 12:01accept it.
- 12:01Okay.
- 12:02That you cannot predict every outcome.
- 12:04Just accept that right now.
- 12:06Can you do that for me?
- 12:08Except that you cannot predict every outcome, prepare
- 12:12for realistic possibilities, but don't you dare let
- 12:16imaginary worst case scenarios make every decision for
- 12:20you.
- 12:20People do it.
- 12:21Oh my gosh.
- 12:22And then you let the brain go in
- 12:24the reverse direction, not the positive direction.
- 12:26It's like, well, this is going to happen.
- 12:27That's going to happen.
- 12:28And you start compounding all things that are
- 12:30never going to happen.
- 12:32A wise person once told me, John, you
- 12:34know, seven out of 10 things are probably
- 12:38going to fall into the ditch and never
- 12:39happen before they ever transpire and the other
- 12:42two or three that might happen will be
- 12:44so minuscule.
- 12:45Like, oh, that was it.
- 12:48Yeah, that's it.
- 12:50And that should make a big difference in
- 12:52your life.
- 12:53Prepare for opportunity.
- 12:56Don't let imaginary worst case scenarios make decisions
- 13:00for you.
- 13:00Or play in your head because they can
- 13:02seem so real guys.
- 13:03And you're like, oh my gosh, what am
- 13:04I going to do?
- 13:06This is going to happen.
- 13:06That's going to happen.
- 13:07Of course you're focusing on the negative.
- 13:10What would happen guys?
- 13:11If we actually focused on the positive for
- 13:13a moment, could we do that?
- 13:15Focus on the positive, positive.
- 13:20What we focus on is what we become,
- 13:26what we focus on.
- 13:27We become our thoughts, become things.
- 13:32Number 23 guys recognize when waiting is appropriate
- 13:39and when it is avoidance.
- 13:41Because many people go, oh, I'm just going
- 13:43to wait.
- 13:44I'm not ready.
- 13:45Or they keep purposely not finishing the simple
- 13:49task because they don't want to take the
- 13:53next step.
- 13:55So they're deliberately sabotaging themselves to procrastinate, waiting
- 14:01for a medical result or crucial contract detail,
- 14:06maybe wise waiting because you're scared of judgment.
- 14:09That's a different story.
- 14:11Or what I like to say a different
- 14:14side of the coin, but we can't think
- 14:18that every scenario is the same just because
- 14:22it is been like that in the past
- 14:26doesn't mean it will be like that in
- 14:28the future so again, I'm waiting because you're
- 14:32scared of judgment is different, but don't you
- 14:36dare take situation and say, you know what,
- 14:39it's not happening, like you're going this way
- 14:40and that way and you know what happens,
- 14:42don't get anywhere because you keep purposely sabotaging
- 14:45yourself, that's crazy guys, that's crazy, but
- 14:55people do it every day because they're afraid
- 14:58to take the step.
- 15:00I remember the first time I ever got
- 15:02on a water slide, I'm going to say
- 15:04one of these huge water slides at the
- 15:06water parks where you have to cross your
- 15:08arms, you have to cross your feet and
- 15:10then basically nobody gives you a push, you
- 15:13get there and then pretty much you scoot
- 15:14yourself over and as soon as you're ready,
- 15:16you go right down so you pretty much
- 15:17control it, nobody pushes you, it's like, wow,
- 15:20it's like this feeling, you lose your stomach
- 15:23for a moment, but then you're down and
- 15:25it's like, wow, what a relief, same feeling
- 15:28when you go on a zipline, so I
- 15:32think the feeling that we get, like a
- 15:35lot of times you're at the top of
- 15:36the slide, it's like, well, maybe I forgot
- 15:41my suntan lotion or maybe I need to
- 15:45get my T-shirt or maybe I need
- 15:47to take my T-shirt off or maybe
- 15:49I need to figure out where my towel
- 15:51is, these are all excuses or maybe the
- 15:55water's not so warm in this pool, maybe
- 15:57we should go to the other pool, we'll
- 15:59have the other slide because I think that
- 16:00pool's warmer, I remember I did these things
- 16:03and you know, the funny thing is, 90
- 16:07% of these pools, they're all the same
- 16:08ice cold water and one park I went
- 16:10to, all of the water was heated, even
- 16:12though it seemed a little cool, it was
- 16:15heated, but they were all very close in
- 16:18temperature, so I was using that as a
- 16:21tactic to procrastinate going down the slide, my
- 16:25friends were like, John, like enough, why don't
- 16:28you just go down the slide, I don't
- 16:29know if my mat's comfortable, is this mat
- 16:31right, is this mat like good, is this
- 16:34mat stable, I mean, it seems like it's
- 16:35falling apart, it's fine, it's perfect, and you
- 16:38make excuses for yourself, right, number 24, build
- 16:43trust through small commitments you actually keep, there's
- 16:49a mouthful, choose something manageable, complete it and
- 16:54prove to yourself that your intentions can become
- 16:57actions, now maybe that slide is too big
- 17:00for you, okay, fine, don't go on that
- 17:02big slide, you don't have to, go on
- 17:06something else, go on the smaller slide, I
- 17:09remember the first time I went on roller
- 17:10coasters, it was actually at Great Adventure, I
- 17:14remember going to the park with a friend
- 17:17of mine, we actually wound up going to
- 17:20the park, and we didn't go to school
- 17:23that day, it was in high school, and
- 17:26I think it was one of the very
- 17:27first times we ever did that, and we
- 17:30were there, and the whole day we were
- 17:32worried, you know, is somebody gonna see us,
- 17:34nobody was gonna see us way down in
- 17:36Jackson, like nobody was ever gonna see us,
- 17:38and after we got on a few rides,
- 17:41we realized the day was gonna be okay,
- 17:43and I said this is not something we
- 17:46want to repeat doing, no, we did it
- 17:47once, we're not doing it again, it was
- 17:51nice to do once, but it's not something
- 17:52you want to repeat, and I remember the
- 17:55first time we had a roller coaster then,
- 17:59and one of the roller coasters, the very
- 18:02first roller coaster I went on, was the
- 18:06Batman ride, you guys know the Batman ride,
- 18:08so the Batman ride, I wonder if it's
- 18:11still there at Great Adventure, I'm not sure
- 18:13if they took it down or not, I
- 18:15don't know if it's still there, I was
- 18:16just looking to see if it's still there,
- 18:19it looks like the Batman ride is, from
- 18:23what I could see, yeah, it is still
- 18:25there, so it opened on May 1st, 1993,
- 18:30so this was a while ago, I think
- 18:32we went around 19, well had it be,
- 18:36I'm trying to remember now, we went there,
- 18:40and actually the first ride that we went
- 18:43on, actually no, it wasn't that ride, it
- 18:46was actually the Great American Scream Machine, and
- 18:51that was a very interesting ride, okay, a
- 18:56very interesting ride, but you know, the Batman
- 19:01ride was a very, very interesting ride, I
- 19:06can tell you that, and you just kind
- 19:08of swooped, and it just, it felt like
- 19:10amazing how you just kind of went all
- 19:12around, and what happened, and you went 50
- 19:15miles per hour, there are four G's on
- 19:17the roller coaster, even the loading spot, the
- 19:21loading spot was pretty neat, how you basically
- 19:24would, you would be at the loading chamber,
- 19:29and the thing about it is, you would
- 19:33get in, they would lock you in, it
- 19:36was comfortable, and then after that happened, the
- 19:41ride took off, but when it took off,
- 19:42it was like, uh-oh, and it seemed
- 19:44fine, but then you know you're climbing, and
- 19:46everyone on a roller coaster, when you're climbing,
- 19:47it's like, you know there's going to be
- 19:48a down sometime, and I remember my one
- 19:50friend telling me, John, when you go on
- 19:53the roller coaster, just keep your eye on
- 19:55the screw, I said, why, he says, so
- 19:57you don't throw up on me, you know,
- 19:59just, just keep your eye on the screw,
- 20:00focus on it, because you could get, some
- 20:02people could get motion sickness, and he didn't
- 20:03know, he was sitting right next to me,
- 20:06and so you know, you were being turned,
- 20:07and twisted, and it wasn't that bad, I
- 20:09just remember letting myself go, and feeling, and
- 20:12it was pretty cool, I've got to tell
- 20:13you, but what got me to go on
- 20:15that ride, was talking to a couple of
- 20:17the ride engineers, and hearing how they did
- 20:20maintenance for that ride, so that was what
- 20:22got me to go on it, but it
- 20:23was a lot of fun, so, but I
- 20:24was procrastinating, but I did get a question
- 20:27answered, I felt confident after the engineers answered
- 20:30my question about how they do maintenance, and
- 20:32I decided to go on, so number 25,
- 20:34stop right now, interpreting every obstacle as a
- 20:39warning to quit, a delay may call for
- 20:42a better plan, not abandonment, investigate the problem
- 20:46before declaring the mission is over, too many
- 20:51people get out of the game, just because
- 20:53they couldn't hit the ball the first time,
- 20:55or they couldn't kick the soccer ball, heck,
- 20:57I remember playing for one of the top
- 20:59soccer teams, when I was probably just a
- 21:03few years old, and I remember not even
- 21:05be able to kick the ball very well,
- 21:08then after a few games, I was able
- 21:10to, so number 26, to stay open to
- 21:14guidance without becoming dependent on approval, listen to
- 21:18qualified people, especially on high stakes decisions, while
- 21:22retaining ownership of your choices, don't let somebody
- 21:25try to manipulate you, if you're not ready,
- 21:29then you're not ready, number 27, understand that
- 21:33trust does not eliminate preparation, practice, research, and
- 21:37contingency plans can make courage practical, preparation and
- 21:43faith can work together, 28, choose one reasonable
- 21:49action despite uncertainty, send the application, start the
- 21:56conversation, schedule the first lesson, throw the first
- 22:01ball, make the step specific and achievable, you
- 22:06know what guys, you will do more of
- 22:08these steps, right, call the person, make the
- 22:13date, so it doesn't go well, oh well,
- 22:18you had a good time, life's about experiences,
- 22:22not about things being perfect, number 29, let
- 22:26experience strengthen your judgment over time, not overnight,
- 22:29reflect on what worked, what surprised you, and
- 22:33what you change, that's how trust becomes informed
- 22:37confidence, that doesn't happen overnight guys, number 30,
- 22:43remember that meaningful progress rarely comes with guarantees,
- 22:48your future isn't built by waiting for perfect
- 22:51signs, it's built through thoughtful choices and consistent
- 22:55actions, that's a key guys, a lot of
- 23:03you that are trying to do something like,
- 23:05I want to go on the water slide,
- 23:07but the water is too cold, or the
- 23:09mats not comfortable enough, or well you sure
- 23:13this railing safe, or maybe I need more
- 23:16sun lotion, right, you know keep giving yourself
- 23:18excuses, you know you don't need any more
- 23:22suntan lotion, you put a half a bottle
- 23:24on before you spray yourself to death, before
- 23:26you went up this thing, and you know
- 23:29you don't need a shirt, because you left
- 23:31one off purposely, and you know your towel
- 23:33is down there, so what are you doing,
- 23:35so here's your Wednesday challenge, you're ready for
- 23:40it, identify one area where you're waiting for
- 23:44absolute certainty, ask what information you genuinely need
- 23:47right now, then take one reasonable well-considered
- 23:52step forward, don't confuse urgency with wisdom, just
- 23:59refuse to let unnecessary doubt decide for you,
- 24:04this week ladies and gentlemen, we recognized, we
- 24:14chose, we broke free, we learned to stand
- 24:20firm, and today ladies and gentlemen, we're starting
- 24:24to begin to learn how to trust, trust,
- 24:29somebody asked me this question one time John,
- 24:33trust, so let's go to Miriam Webster, and
- 24:37let's give you the definition of trust, right
- 24:40from the horse's mouth, okay, trust, it's a
- 24:43noun, a relationship founded on mutual trust, living
- 24:50trust, but we're just talking about, we're just
- 24:52talking about regular trust, the one we might
- 24:56be talking about more, is maybe trusting, like
- 24:58trusting somebody, but I think a lot of
- 25:03people, they get scared, because they don't want
- 25:05to trust, that trust is trusting, a supportive
- 25:08and trusting relationship, tending to believe that other
- 25:12people are good, honest, right, and of that
- 25:15nature, trust, trust is the key, tomorrow ladies
- 25:21and gentlemen, we're going to rise, again, and
- 25:27Friday, we're going to learn how to really
- 25:29live, and be free, you see ladies and
- 25:35gentlemen, each step builds upon the previous one,
- 25:41before it, a lot of people say, oh
- 25:44I want to trust you, but they haven't
- 25:46even got to know you, they haven't even
- 25:48gone to really start even being an acquaintance,
- 25:52so you go from a stranger, to an
- 25:54acquaintance, to a friend, to a best friend,
- 26:00right, maybe to a super friend, and then
- 26:03to your ultimate friend, depending on how many
- 26:07levels you have in there, I think that's
- 26:10an important one for all of us to
- 26:12recognize, and understand, we can never rush the
- 26:16process, I like to compare this to basically
- 26:20taking chocolate, right, and there's something you have
- 26:24to do with chocolate, you know what that
- 26:25is, so you have to do something called
- 26:28tempering chocolate, and tempering chocolate, you can't rush
- 26:32it, you could burn the chocolate, or you
- 26:35could do something so that it doesn't crack,
- 26:37it doesn't have the shine, you cannot rush
- 26:39tempering, you have to do it slowly, you
- 26:43have to do it a couple times, a
- 26:46lot of people say, oh I'm just going
- 26:47to do it quick, then they get burnt
- 26:49chocolate, or they get chocolate that doesn't shine,
- 26:51it looks like something you just want to
- 26:53throw out, barely eat, chocolate is supposed to
- 26:57look good, and taste good, a lot of
- 27:01people don't get that, ladies and gentlemen, I
