- 0:07Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:10Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex bart.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Bar and Lazarren.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Hello, everybody nailed it. Joined us always by our bar.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Here is Evan Lazar and Alex bars.
- 0:24Speaker 3: The one thing that I think really has stood out
- 0:26Speaker 3: to me about this whole process now is that they
- 0:30Speaker 3: have coaching continuity on both sides of the ball, and
- 0:33Speaker 3: we we have archetypes again, like we have prototypes of
- 0:36Speaker 3: like this is a Patriots edge rusher, this is a
- 0:38Speaker 3: Patriots safety, this is a Patriots linebacker. And I do
- 0:42Speaker 3: think that that helps you kind of narrow the list
- 0:44Speaker 3: down a little bit in a draft that admittedly is
- 0:48Speaker 3: is kind of difficult given where they're picking to narrow
- 0:51Speaker 3: the list down.
- 0:52Speaker 4: So Zach Korr thought he got better and better.
- 0:56Speaker 3: If you want to just look at play calling, game planning,
- 0:59Speaker 3: you know, those open drives or a problem for a
- 1:01Speaker 3: while that pretty much went away in the playoffs.
- 1:06Speaker 4: Catch twenty two. All right, here we go, Catch twenty two.
- 1:11Speaker 5: Alex Barth, apologies gonna delay the snow, still making things
- 1:15Speaker 5: tough here back in New England.
- 1:16Speaker 4: What would Evan Lazar know about that?
- 1:18Speaker 5: He's all the way out in Indianapolis for the Combine
- 1:21Speaker 5: for today's.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Episode of College because of you.
- 1:24Speaker 4: Yeah, no, my snow situation was not great.
- 1:28Speaker 5: I thought I had dug my car out and turns
- 1:31Speaker 5: out not quite.
- 1:32Speaker 4: The plaus will get you so, but we're here, We're
- 1:35Speaker 4: gonna do the show.
- 1:35Speaker 5: I think we can still give you the two hours
- 1:37Speaker 5: because we have nobody coming up after us. To appreciate
- 1:39Speaker 5: everybody hanging out being patient again. It's Alex Barth Evan
- 1:42Speaker 5: Lazar Patriots Catch twenty two, one of the bigger episodes
- 1:45Speaker 5: we do every year. Obviously with the Combine, this is
- 1:48Speaker 5: the week the off season really comes into focus.
- 1:50Speaker 3: So if you want to join us.
- 1:51Speaker 5: Eight five five PATS five hundred is the phone number
- 1:54Speaker 5: you can email US podcasts at Patriots dot com as
- 1:58Speaker 5: well having how's Indy.
- 2:02Speaker 3: And he's good and he's good. It misses you, though, Barthy,
- 2:05Speaker 3: it does. We miss you out here.
- 2:06Speaker 5: But bought I almost bought a bottle the Saint Almo's
- 2:12Speaker 5: Cocktail Sauce the other day in the storage, just to
- 2:14Speaker 5: to take part in the experience.
- 2:18Speaker 3: I've had enough Saint Elmo's Cocktail sauce to last me
- 2:21Speaker 3: another year. I can tell you that, right now you know,
- 2:23Speaker 3: you get it, you get your fix, and then it's
- 2:27Speaker 3: kind of like, all right, i'll see you next year, but.
- 2:30Speaker 4: I'll eat it.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I like it. We'll kick it's it's good. It's good.
- 2:35Speaker 3: It gets your it gets your sinuses cleared out, that's
- 2:37Speaker 3: for sure. But no, everything here has been been good,
- 2:41Speaker 3: you know. I I keep although it's been a couple
- 2:43Speaker 3: of years of this now, I still feel like it's
- 2:46Speaker 3: different about how much we get to talk to the
- 2:49Speaker 3: Patriots decision makers now, Like used to come to the
- 2:53Speaker 3: combine and it was like all like you had to
- 2:55Speaker 3: take all your takeaways from the podiums and the players
- 2:58Speaker 3: and the prospects and all that kind of stuff. And
- 3:01Speaker 3: we just spent about an hour with Mike Rabel. We
- 3:05Speaker 3: spent an hour yesterday with Elliott Wolf. So although they
- 3:10Speaker 3: didn't divulge you any state secrets, really I do feel
- 3:13Speaker 3: like we have at least some sort of a path
- 3:17Speaker 3: forward here, some sort of vision of what they're trying
- 3:19Speaker 3: to do this offseason.
- 3:20Speaker 5: Yeah, and that's where I want to start, Evan. I mean,
- 3:23Speaker 5: you talked about it in the intro, having the you
- 3:26Speaker 5: know what kind of prototypes they're going to want. We
- 3:27Speaker 5: got that from Wolf and verbel really at a number
- 3:31Speaker 5: of positions, a couple of key positions, but before that,
- 3:33Speaker 5: just the big picture. I thought Elliott Wolf specifically yesterday
- 3:39Speaker 5: did a good job of setting the stage because I
- 3:42Speaker 5: think the big question we're one of the big questions
- 3:45Speaker 5: fans are debating about this team coming off of the
- 3:47Speaker 5: season and coming off of the Super Bowl is how
- 3:51Speaker 5: much do you You know, you don't want to overreact
- 3:56Speaker 5: to just one game, but you also don't want to
- 4:00Speaker 5: overreact to Like we knew this was going to be
- 4:02Speaker 5: a process. We said at the end of the offseason
- 4:04Speaker 5: last year, Hey, they had a good off season, but
- 4:06Speaker 5: this is probably a two to three year build, and
- 4:10Speaker 5: so you don't want to, you know, react too much
- 4:12Speaker 5: to just get into the game and things like that too.
- 4:14Speaker 5: So Wolf was asked directly, are the Patriots in a rebuild?
- 4:20Speaker 5: And he said no, which I believe is a correct answer,
- 4:24Speaker 5: But he also said a couple of times he kept
- 4:25Speaker 5: using the term building and we're building, and you know,
- 4:29Speaker 5: he said, we need to add multiple starters. We're gonna
- 4:31Speaker 5: create competition in as many points as possible. And look,
- 4:34Speaker 5: it's it's not easy to say, Okay, you have to
- 4:37Speaker 5: react but not overreact to the way the season ended,
- 4:42Speaker 5: and it's easier said than done. There's a fine line there,
- 4:45Speaker 5: and I think that's a really good way to put it.
- 4:46Speaker 5: We're still building, but it's not a rebuild and they're
- 4:49Speaker 5: not going to tear down and start over.
- 4:50Speaker 4: They have a core they believe in.
- 4:52Speaker 5: But they need to continue to put pieces on top
- 4:55Speaker 5: of that. So I to me, Wolf and Vreebel talked
- 4:59Speaker 5: about a little but this was more the kind of
- 5:01Speaker 5: questions Wolf got, which is why I'm starting with him,
- 5:04Speaker 5: Like that's the exact tone I wanted him to take.
- 5:07Speaker 4: And so I really liked.
- 5:09Speaker 5: What he had to say yesterday personally about that big
- 5:11Speaker 5: picture aspect.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think one of the things that stood
- 5:17Speaker 3: out to me from him was from Elliott Wolfe's comments.
- 5:21Speaker 3: I can't remember which press conference it was in, honestly,
- 5:24Speaker 3: but with the one that he said, it doesn't really
- 5:29Speaker 3: change much that they had all this success last year,
- 5:34Speaker 3: but it does make them a little bit more of
- 5:36Speaker 3: an attractive destination. And I think that they feel like
- 5:40Speaker 3: now with Mike Rabel, Drake May and now a trip
- 5:45Speaker 3: to the super Bowl, maybe it does expedite things in
- 5:49Speaker 3: the sense that does a high priced, you know, big
- 5:52Speaker 3: name free agent say I actually want to play for
- 5:56Speaker 3: Mike Rabel. I want to go to the Patriots. I
- 5:57Speaker 3: wanted to be a part of what they're building. As
- 6:00Speaker 3: Aj Brown say that he wants to come to play
- 6:03Speaker 3: for his former coach and reunite with Mike Rabel, Does
- 6:05Speaker 3: Max Crosby say that right? And you couldn't say that
- 6:09Speaker 3: at this point last year. At this point last year,
- 6:12Speaker 3: all they had was money. Now they have draw and
- 6:17Speaker 3: I think that that could change it, not necessarily even
- 6:21Speaker 3: like by their own doing, but just kind of, you know,
- 6:23Speaker 3: it just organically happened.
- 6:27Speaker 5: Yeah, no, it it again. They're they're building towards something.
- 6:31Speaker 5: So I'm curious from you, like the buzz out there
- 6:33Speaker 5: in terms of the free agency market. First of all,
- 6:35Speaker 5: it's it's looking like this free agency market. I don't
- 6:39Speaker 5: think we really get great free agency markets anymore, I guess,
- 6:46Speaker 5: But like, yah, does this kind of feel like it's
- 6:48Speaker 5: going to be a dud? Kyle Pitts gets franchised. The
- 6:52Speaker 5: reporting is that that George Pickens is going to get franchised.
- 6:55Speaker 5: I remember last year, but he was talking up like this,
- 6:59Speaker 5: there might be something here and then we got back home,
- 7:01Speaker 5: and obviously some guys end up getting tagged. But what
- 7:05Speaker 5: how are people out there talking about the free agency market.
- 7:09Speaker 3: I think it's the same what you just said, Like,
- 7:13Speaker 3: we know how this works. We get to this point
- 7:15Speaker 3: of the off season. This guy gets tagged, that guy
- 7:18Speaker 3: gets tagged, this guy gets extended before the start of
- 7:21Speaker 3: the league year. So it never hits the market, and
- 7:24Speaker 3: on and on we go, right and then it shrinks
- 7:26Speaker 3: usually the market. But I what I think that is
- 7:29Speaker 3: being a little bit talked about with this free agent
- 7:32Speaker 3: market is that they do have certain positions where there
- 7:37Speaker 3: are some depth. I think the main thing is at
- 7:43Speaker 3: the guard position on offense. You know, can they go
- 7:49Speaker 3: out there and sign a David Edwards sumlo from the
- 7:54Speaker 3: Pittsburgh Steelers. It might not be this like big, you know,
- 7:58Speaker 3: splashy free agent signing in terms of the contract and
- 8:02Speaker 3: all that stuff, but it would be a really valuable
- 8:04Speaker 3: move for them to kind of shore up that offensive line.
- 8:07Speaker 3: So that was something that I think that has stood
- 8:10Speaker 3: out just talking to some people about what the free
- 8:13Speaker 3: agency market could look like, is it might not be
- 8:15Speaker 3: those big names at the premium positions. It might be
- 8:19Speaker 3: some things like linebacker, guard, interior, offensive line, safety, you know,
- 8:25Speaker 3: places like that.
- 8:27Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, look, I don't And we talked about this,
- 8:30Speaker 5: I think a little bit last week in terms of
- 8:32Speaker 5: just if you're spending premium non premium positions, Are they
- 8:37Speaker 5: gonna spend like they did last year?
- 8:39Speaker 6: No?
- 8:39Speaker 4: I don't think so. Do they need to to have
- 8:41Speaker 4: a successful offseason?
- 8:42Speaker 7: No?
- 8:42Speaker 5: They added like what, eight starters last year in free agency?
- 8:46Speaker 5: Nine starters. That's not If you're doing that every year,
- 8:49Speaker 5: that's not sustainable. It all comes back to the draft.
- 8:52Speaker 5: And I'll say this to Blue in the face. You
- 8:55Speaker 5: have to draft while to have sustainable success in the NFL.
- 8:57Speaker 5: Free agency can give you, you know.
- 8:59Speaker 4: A a bump. It can give you a bump for
- 9:02Speaker 4: a year, maybe two, but you have to draft. Well.
- 9:04Speaker 5: But like that being said, you know, can they add
- 9:07Speaker 5: they don't need to make I don't even know if
- 9:08Speaker 5: there is a Milton Williams type signing for them.
- 9:11Speaker 4: Out there this year.
- 9:12Speaker 5: Maybe Trey Hendrickson, but he's that's older.
- 9:16Speaker 4: That's different.
- 9:17Speaker 5: You know, just looking at the list here Pickens, it
- 9:20Speaker 5: sounds like it's gonna get tagged. Linderbaum's a center, that's
- 9:23Speaker 5: not a need. Devin Lloyd does not play premium good
- 9:26Speaker 5: player doesn't play premium position. They're not gonna sign a
- 9:28Speaker 5: corner Jamal Dean, Kenneth Walker. No, and like these guys
- 9:31Speaker 5: aren't making the impact Milt Williams is, So, you know,
- 9:34Speaker 5: can they make I don't know, like two or three
- 9:38Speaker 5: Robert Splaine mccollins type signings at key positions, guard, linebacker,
- 9:45Speaker 5: you mentioned, you know, safety, especially if Hawkins leaves, Edge
- 9:49Speaker 5: might be the one where they get a little bigger.
- 9:51Speaker 5: There was a lot of talk about Edge the last
- 9:53Speaker 5: couple of days. We'll get into that, but that's kind
- 9:56Speaker 5: of where I'm looking at for free agency. And based
- 9:57Speaker 5: off what they said. Vrabel had the comment today about
- 10:00Speaker 5: shopping you know Wolf again. Yes, they talked about we
- 10:03Speaker 5: want to add starters if you want to create competition.
- 10:05Speaker 4: I don't think that's an unrealistic expectation.
- 10:09Speaker 3: No, And I think the positions that we're talking about,
- 10:12Speaker 3: that we've been talking about on this show and now
- 10:15Speaker 3: a lot of shows are talking about, are all the
- 10:17Speaker 3: positions they're kind of looking at. You know. Rabel was
- 10:19Speaker 3: less specific, I would say, in terms of needs of
- 10:22Speaker 3: what they're going to go out there and try to
- 10:24Speaker 3: fill on the roster. He just talked about continuing to
- 10:27Speaker 3: build depth throughout the entire roster and build competition. Wolf
- 10:31Speaker 3: kind of got a little bit more specific on positions,
- 10:34Speaker 3: you know, he talked about offensive line continuing to reinforce
- 10:37Speaker 3: that edge rusher, and then he kind of grouped playmakers together,
- 10:42Speaker 3: you know, whether that's wide receivers or tight ends into
- 10:45Speaker 3: one sort of bucket. He mentioned linebackers a little bit
- 10:48Speaker 3: off ball linebackers. But I think that those first three
- 10:52Speaker 3: that I mentioned are really the ones that they're zeroing
- 10:55Speaker 3: in on, you know, this offseason, whether that is free agency, draft, trade, whatever,
- 11:00Speaker 3: but they're pretty zeroed in on, I think, on those
- 11:04Speaker 3: three spots, and then just overall depth, you know, just everywhere,
- 11:08Speaker 3: just adding competition, and.
- 11:10Speaker 4: I mean edge.
- 11:10Speaker 5: I don't know that we talked about any I don't
- 11:13Speaker 5: know that any position was talked about more than edge
- 11:16Speaker 5: between Rabel and Wolf. And I thought it was kind
- 11:18Speaker 5: of cool to go back to your clip off the
- 11:20Speaker 5: top of the show there, Evan from last week about well,
- 11:24Speaker 5: you know, what are their prototypes and what kinds of
- 11:27Speaker 5: players at certain positions are they going to look for?
- 11:29Speaker 5: And we got frankly a lot of that from Elliott
- 11:32Speaker 5: Wolf yesterday and then Vrabel tabs them on today.
- 11:35Speaker 4: But for those who missed.
- 11:36Speaker 5: It, Elliott Wolf and I'm reading from your transcription here
- 11:40Speaker 5: on what he looks for in edge rushers pass rush,
- 11:43Speaker 5: speed and violence, explosiveness, first step quickness, the ability to
- 11:47Speaker 5: win in multiple ways. You can't just be a run
- 11:49Speaker 5: around the hoop guy at this level. There's some guys
- 11:51Speaker 5: in college that are able to be successful that way,
- 11:54Speaker 5: but you need different things in your toolbox. I think
- 11:57Speaker 5: the guys that can rush with power are maybe more
- 11:59Speaker 5: of a PREMI the guys that are athletic and can
- 12:02Speaker 5: run with power, we can rush with power. Sorry, everyone's
- 12:04Speaker 5: looking for pass rushers in the league, so that's that's
- 12:08Speaker 5: what they're looking for. Look, this is a really good
- 12:10Speaker 5: edge draft. I think that Wolf said that yesterday. I
- 12:13Speaker 5: know v Abel said it today. Mentioned there's a lot
- 12:15Speaker 5: of depth. Yeah, you're gonna kind of have your choice
- 12:18Speaker 5: that the players you want. There's the two hundred and
- 12:19Speaker 5: thirty pound speed rusher, there's a two hundred and eighty
- 12:22Speaker 5: pound edge setter, everything in between. You know, you look
- 12:25Speaker 5: at what and obviously these guys are the apex, but
- 12:27Speaker 5: they are in the prototype. You look at what Miles
- 12:30Speaker 5: garretted to them in the playoffs. You look what Will Anderson
- 12:32Speaker 5: did to them in the playoffs. These are the guys
- 12:34Speaker 5: that are like two fifty two sixty and just elite athletes, power,
- 12:39Speaker 5: bend agility. You're not gonna find every you know, those
- 12:43Speaker 5: guys don't don't come for free. You're not just gonna
- 12:47Speaker 5: trip over them on the sidewalk. But it does kind
- 12:49Speaker 5: of sound like that's the prototype they're looking for. So
- 12:53Speaker 5: that was just my reaction to it. I loved hearing that,
- 12:55Speaker 5: go get the well rounded guy. I feel that way
- 12:57Speaker 5: in a lot of positions.
- 13:00Speaker 4: What did you make of that quote?
- 13:01Speaker 5: Are there any players like when you hear that quote,
- 13:03Speaker 5: are there any players draft for agency that come to mind?
- 13:08Speaker 3: Yeah? I thought what was interesting about Eli Wolfe's comments
- 13:12Speaker 3: that you read what I had tweeted out yesterday, is
- 13:15Speaker 3: that nowhere in that answer Alex does he say anything
- 13:18Speaker 3: about run defense right, Like, it's all getting off the ball,
- 13:23Speaker 3: getting to the quarterback, you know that sort of thing.
- 13:25Speaker 3: I mean, like I guess speeding violence maybe you could
- 13:29Speaker 3: like say violence is you know, playing physical, playing guard is.
- 13:33Speaker 3: But like Mike rabel I would say today mentioned more
- 13:38Speaker 3: about setting the edge of the defense. So, you know,
- 13:42Speaker 3: I think when Elliott Wolf gave his answer, he's thinking,
- 13:44Speaker 3: you know, the top things that they look for, obviously,
- 13:47Speaker 3: when there's probably a laundry list of things that they
- 13:49Speaker 3: look for with each player in each position. But I
- 13:53Speaker 3: think what we kind of already knew is kind of
- 13:55Speaker 3: confirming what we already knew about their type of player
- 13:58Speaker 3: at that spot. Like they want that can get off
- 14:00Speaker 3: the ball, like they want guys that win with speed.
- 14:03Speaker 3: They want guys that explode off the football. They they
- 14:07Speaker 3: don't want.
- 14:09Speaker 5: With speed, but not guys that only win with speed.
- 14:12Speaker 5: I think that's an important distinction.
- 14:14Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think what he was kind of saying
- 14:16Speaker 3: about the speed the power being a premium is like, well, yeah,
- 14:19Speaker 3: when you get guys that have speed and power, then
- 14:22Speaker 3: that's Miles Garrett going number one overall.
- 14:24Speaker 5: Right, But he talks about the guys. He talks you
- 14:28Speaker 5: can't just be the guy running around the hoop.
- 14:30Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think that, you know, but that could
- 14:32Speaker 3: be like inside counters, like there's a lot of different
- 14:35Speaker 3: things that you can look at at all are involved
- 14:38Speaker 3: kind of like a foundation of speed that would give
- 14:41Speaker 3: him different tools in the toolbox. I guess, you know,
- 14:44Speaker 3: obviously power bull rush or whatever. It could also be
- 14:47Speaker 3: part of that too, but I think that the main
- 14:49Speaker 3: thing that you.
- 14:51Speaker 5: Know, they say here, I look for guys that can
- 14:53Speaker 5: rush with power, maybe more of a premium.
- 14:57Speaker 3: Right, So I think they're they're like, first priority is
- 15:00Speaker 3: getting guys that win with pure speed, and I think
- 15:04Speaker 3: you kind of see that with Chase On and Harold
- 15:07Speaker 3: Landry and even Elijah Ponders a little bit bigger, but
- 15:09Speaker 3: still i'd say that's his like premium trait is his
- 15:13Speaker 3: speed off the ball. So I think, you know, Braden Swinson,
- 15:16Speaker 3: you know, like all those guys I would say, are
- 15:18Speaker 3: kind of the same and that regard. You know, different guys,
- 15:21Speaker 3: but same in that regard. So I think that there's
- 15:24Speaker 3: a that's clearly their type. And I think that's different
- 15:29Speaker 3: and not to compare it, but that's different than the
- 15:31Speaker 3: Belichick defense, right where there was such a premium on
- 15:34Speaker 3: edge setting and being sturdy and not running past the
- 15:38Speaker 3: quarterback and like all that different stuff that Belichick prioritize.
- 15:42Speaker 3: This is different. This is a different defense, it's a
- 15:44Speaker 3: different mentality, a different type of player. Now you mentioned
- 15:48Speaker 3: like guys that fit. You know, the guy that we've
- 15:50Speaker 3: been talking a lot about with people is are Mason Thomas,
- 15:53Speaker 3: you know from Oklahoma, who I think is starting to
- 15:56Speaker 3: get some maybe late first round, top fifties.
- 16:00Speaker 5: He's going to run a four to four. If he
- 16:02Speaker 5: does that, I don't even know if the Patriot's gonna
- 16:03Speaker 5: have a shot him. By the way, I saw this yesterday.
- 16:06Speaker 5: You know why he has the R in front of
- 16:07Speaker 5: his name.
- 16:09Speaker 3: He said something about his mom like.
- 16:11Speaker 5: Yeah, his whole family's are names and his mom wanted
- 16:14Speaker 5: to keep that tradition going, but didn't want to actually
- 16:16Speaker 5: give him an our name.
- 16:18Speaker 4: I just think that's awesome like that, that's just dead rules.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Yeah, So you know, he's obviously the one that's at
- 16:25Speaker 3: the top of the list when you just look at
- 16:27Speaker 3: this class and you look at guys that get off
- 16:29Speaker 3: the ball with great explosiveness, right, I mean, that's that's obvious.
- 16:33Speaker 3: You know, there's players of him chasing plays down twenty
- 16:36Speaker 3: thirty forty yards down the field like all that kind
- 16:38Speaker 3: of stuff. So I think he's that type of player. Absolutely.
- 16:43Speaker 3: I think your guy Messidor is that kind of player.
- 16:45Speaker 6: You know.
- 16:45Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm interested to see what's gonna happen with it,
- 16:49Speaker 5: So like I'm interested to see how he's gonna test
- 16:53Speaker 5: and all that.
- 16:55Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, continue, There's some conversations about, you know, no problem.
- 16:59Speaker 3: There's some conversations about him with the foot injury or
- 17:02Speaker 3: whatever injury he's dealing with, and his age and like
- 17:05Speaker 3: all that kind of stuff is factors with Mesador. But
- 17:08Speaker 3: I think it's important to mention I just mentioned the
- 17:10Speaker 3: last one before I actually say that Cash is how
- 17:13Speaker 3: you know, I think is another guy that when I
- 17:15Speaker 3: watched him play on film, he looks a lot like
- 17:17Speaker 3: Harold Blandry, Like Bendy, you know, got that ability to
- 17:21Speaker 3: go inside on the counter, got that ability to run
- 17:23Speaker 3: around the arc, turn a tight corner, you know. Kind
- 17:26Speaker 3: of made a decent amount of plays at Texas A
- 17:29Speaker 3: and it. But all these guys like kind of have
- 17:33Speaker 3: maybe like I think ar Mason Thomas, there's a little
- 17:35Speaker 3: bit of concern about his run defense and his ability
- 17:38Speaker 3: to play all three downs. Mesador is older, Uh, Cash
- 17:42Speaker 3: is hal apparently is gonna come out with short arms again,
- 17:46Speaker 3: Like we're gonna do the short arms thing again. So
- 17:51Speaker 3: also short arms. Yeah, so all three so the but
- 17:55Speaker 3: I think what's important about why I bring up there
- 17:58Speaker 3: kind of you know, deficiencies at everybody's talking about they're
- 18:01Speaker 3: picking thirty one.
- 18:02Speaker 4: No, it's a great point.
- 18:03Speaker 3: There's gonna there's gonna be a flaw in these guys, right,
- 18:06Speaker 3: They're they're not gonna get von Miller, Miles Garrett, Like,
- 18:10Speaker 3: they're not gonna get that guy at thirty one. So
- 18:13Speaker 3: all these guys that fall like, yeah, if they draft
- 18:16Speaker 3: cash as howl, we're gonna have to deal with people
- 18:18Speaker 3: talking about the arm length again. But it's like, yeah,
- 18:21Speaker 3: like that's that's why he lasted till thirty one. And
- 18:23Speaker 3: I go back just the reality of it.
- 18:25Speaker 5: I go back to, you know, when we got asked
- 18:27Speaker 5: about like Josh Simmons last year, right, and those are
- 18:32Speaker 5: the kind of guys you take late in the first round.
- 18:33Speaker 5: I gave this take then like you're looking for uh,
- 18:37Speaker 5: you know, he didn't work out. But that's what Dominique
- 18:38Speaker 5: Easley was. Dominique Easley had the talent to be taken
- 18:41Speaker 5: in the first half of the first round, but he
- 18:42Speaker 5: had a history knee injuries, and so sometime you're either
- 18:45Speaker 5: taking lesser talent at the end of the first round
- 18:48Speaker 5: or you're gambling on talent that.
- 18:50Speaker 4: Comes with an asterisk.
- 18:51Speaker 5: So like Mezzador's age is a perfect example, you know
- 18:54Speaker 5: how with the arms too. I don't know if that's
- 18:56Speaker 5: gonna push them all the way down, but Mezzador's age
- 18:59Speaker 5: is a great exit that you're not gonna take a
- 19:01Speaker 5: game mesidor in top fifteen. You're not gonna have twenty
- 19:03Speaker 5: five year old guy when you're trying to build a
- 19:05Speaker 5: core for a team that you're picking that high is
- 19:07Speaker 5: probably truly building up. But you know, a team that
- 19:10Speaker 5: just made a playoff run and is maybe in a
- 19:12Speaker 5: little bit more of a win now mode. I'm not
- 19:14Speaker 5: saying completely sell the future, but a little bit more
- 19:16Speaker 5: of a win now mode. You take that trade off,
- 19:19Speaker 5: I think for a twenty five year old guy. And also,
- 19:21Speaker 5: I know some people are yelling, well, cash is Holl's
- 19:23Speaker 5: going too high for them, and blah blah blah. Some
- 19:26Speaker 5: of these guys are gonna fall. It's such a good
- 19:27Speaker 5: edge class. You're just not gonna have five six edge
- 19:31Speaker 5: rushers go in the top twenty picks.
- 19:33Speaker 4: I don't think I mean maybe I.
- 19:34Speaker 5: Don't think you did mention most of the guys that
- 19:37Speaker 5: are kind of projected loosely in their range, how Mesador
- 19:41Speaker 5: R Mason Thomas, TJ.
- 19:43Speaker 4: Parker, Any reason you left him out?
- 19:46Speaker 3: Yeah, when I watched him, and maybe I am just
- 19:51Speaker 3: getting too caught up in some of the speed stuff
- 19:54Speaker 3: and things like that, But I saw a guy that's
- 19:57Speaker 3: like more physical player, you know, a guy that wins
- 20:00Speaker 3: more with power than he does speed, you know, a
- 20:03Speaker 3: little stiff like he fits into like the more of
- 20:06Speaker 3: the mold of like Anthony Jennings to me then these
- 20:10Speaker 3: other guys. That doesn't mean he's gonna be a bad
- 20:12Speaker 3: player about a bad pro, but he's just a different
- 20:15Speaker 3: type of play. So yeah, exactly. Now, I like, I
- 20:20Speaker 3: look at him as like a true three four outside
- 20:23Speaker 3: linebacker that plays the strong side, that's setting the edge
- 20:26Speaker 3: of the defense and stopping the run. Like, I just
- 20:29Speaker 3: don't know if that's gonna be what they go for now,
- 20:32Speaker 3: if they like, he's definitely in that cluster. But if
- 20:34Speaker 3: I had to separate the cluster, I'm trying to think
- 20:36Speaker 3: of their type.
- 20:37Speaker 4: Of guy you should.
- 20:38Speaker 3: I think maybe those other guys are a bit more.
- 20:41Speaker 5: Two more names that are cut one that's in that
- 20:42Speaker 5: group and one that I think might move in a
- 20:44Speaker 5: grub on Young.
- 20:47Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, So I I talked to Dan Brugler on
- 20:51Speaker 3: our Draft countdown show yesterday that you can watch that
- 20:54Speaker 3: after you watch Catch twenty two. Of course, you can
- 20:57Speaker 3: watch watch us talk to Dan, who obviously is an encyclopedia.
- 21:01Speaker 3: One of the things that I had a concern with
- 21:03Speaker 3: was Zion Young is that there was some things that
- 21:05Speaker 3: popped up off the field with him in terms of
- 21:08Speaker 3: just like getting into fights and things like that, and
- 21:11Speaker 3: I just Dane seemed like, you know, nobody better at
- 21:14Speaker 3: vetting that stuff for the Beast than Dane, and Dane
- 21:17Speaker 3: seemed to kind of downplay it, and he's felt like
- 21:20Speaker 3: that that was all gonna check out. So if that
- 21:24Speaker 3: does check out, you know for teams. And I think
- 21:27Speaker 3: that he's right in that conversation. Now I look at
- 21:29Speaker 3: him as more well two things. One, I think he's
- 21:32Speaker 3: a little bit raw. I think he's kind of like
- 21:34Speaker 3: a projection of a ceiling type of player that projects
- 21:38Speaker 3: are really high, and when you're picking thirty one, maybe
- 21:40Speaker 3: you take that chance. And the other thing is is
- 21:42Speaker 3: I kind of look at him as like a true
- 21:46Speaker 3: five tech, hand in the dirt kind of guy. At
- 21:49Speaker 3: least that's what he did in college. Like maybe he's
- 21:52Speaker 3: up in a two point stance, or he's in that
- 21:54Speaker 3: nine technique that the Patriots like to use outside the tackle.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Maybe that comes and that might actually make him a
- 21:59Speaker 3: better player, honestly, But in college, he was definitely playing
- 22:04Speaker 3: more like head up over the tackle or just shaded
- 22:08Speaker 3: outside of the tackle, and then maybe even some three
- 22:11Speaker 3: technique on third down, you know, be inside. So it
- 22:15Speaker 3: was more of that kind of guy than he was
- 22:18Speaker 3: like kind of like a key on white, yeah, than
- 22:20Speaker 3: a guy that was like playing out in space.
- 22:24Speaker 5: So I'm gonna give you one more too that that
- 22:25Speaker 5: I think might jump up after this week. And you know,
- 22:29Speaker 5: maybe he doesn't get all the way to the thirty
- 22:31Speaker 5: one conversation, but if they trade back a little bit,
- 22:34Speaker 5: and maybe he's more, like you said, TJ. Parker, that
- 22:37Speaker 5: bigger outside linebacker. I think he's moreked From what I
- 22:40Speaker 5: read people writing about him and me watching him, I
- 22:42Speaker 5: think he's more explosive than people are getting him credit for.
- 22:44Speaker 4: Maybe that's just me.
- 22:45Speaker 5: I think he plays with a ton of violence, and
- 22:47Speaker 5: that's Gabe acis from Illinois. He he you know, I
- 22:53Speaker 5: know you talked about the speed thing, they've been using
- 22:55Speaker 5: that word violence here for over a year now.
- 22:57Speaker 4: And he beats the crap out of people.
- 22:58Speaker 5: Like plain and simple, like within the confines of the game,
- 23:02Speaker 5: he beats the crap out of people. I'm a big fan,
- 23:05Speaker 5: h I don't he might end up being a tweener
- 23:06Speaker 5: player for them, and that you're gonna have better options
- 23:09Speaker 5: at thirty one and there's no way he's making it
- 23:10Speaker 5: to sixty three, sixty two, sixty three, whatever it is.
- 23:14Speaker 4: But I don't know. I like him.
- 23:16Speaker 5: I see people saying he's not he could be more explosive.
- 23:18Speaker 5: I think he's pretty explosive personally.
- 23:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I haven't watched that him yet. You're gonna have
- 23:26Speaker 3: to add that one to my list. But yeah, I
- 23:30Speaker 3: this whole class I just think kind of comes down
- 23:32Speaker 3: to it's all different types of players and all different
- 23:36Speaker 3: flavors of players. And then when is the run? You know,
- 23:38Speaker 3: we talk about this a lot with the draft of
- 23:40Speaker 3: like when is that run on day two? Where now
- 23:44Speaker 3: all of a sudden, you watch the prey go by
- 23:46Speaker 3: and you miss the run, you know, And that's happened
- 23:49Speaker 3: to the Patriots. I know, maybe not with Rabel, but
- 23:53Speaker 3: I would say in twenty twenty four, that kind of
- 23:55Speaker 3: happened with them at tackle where they sort of missed
- 23:58Speaker 3: the run, and then they end up with Caden Wallace
- 24:00Speaker 3: in the third round and we see how that went.
- 24:02Speaker 3: So I think that's gonna be a big part of
- 24:05Speaker 3: the edge rusher stuff. But there's a couple of other
- 24:07Speaker 3: positions that I wanted to hit on, and then there's
- 24:11Speaker 3: one more thing from Vrabel. But if we want to
- 24:13Speaker 3: stick with the draft, I wanted to get your take
- 24:15Speaker 3: on this, Alex, because one of the things that I've
- 24:18Speaker 3: heard from, like all the people that we have talked
- 24:20Speaker 3: to here on at our table, you know, Jordan Reed
- 24:24Speaker 3: and Dame Brugler and all these guys that know a
- 24:26Speaker 3: lot more about the draft than I do. I think
- 24:29Speaker 3: that this is there a chance that this wide receiver
- 24:32Speaker 3: class is getting undersold a little bit or like under
- 24:34Speaker 3: the ablem because there's a lot of people that I
- 24:37Speaker 3: think are really high on this group of wide receivers.
- 24:40Speaker 4: I think, yeah, maybe a little bit.
- 24:45Speaker 5: It's definitely not what it's been the last few years,
- 24:49Speaker 5: so it's definitely a step back. But remember we had
- 24:52Speaker 5: those like three or four classes where everybody's like, you
- 24:54Speaker 5: can't keep saying this wide receiver class is legendary when
- 24:58Speaker 5: they're all really good, because then they're all blah blah buth.
- 25:00Speaker 4: That's what it is like.
- 25:01Speaker 5: It's I'd say it's a step back from the last
- 25:03Speaker 5: few years, but I still think it's good.
- 25:05Speaker 4: It's a lot more boom or bust.
- 25:07Speaker 5: I think guys like Jordan Tyson, Casey conception on Omar Cooper,
- 25:12Speaker 5: Chris Chris Bell, especially with the injury Chris Brazzle like
- 25:16Speaker 5: tremendous ceiling, tremendous ceiling on all those players.
- 25:20Speaker 4: I don't know that they.
- 25:21Speaker 5: Have the floor of some of the first round pop
- 25:25Speaker 5: prospects the top years. I'll even say I I don't
- 25:27Speaker 5: did I mention they're not like Jordan Tyson. I guess
- 25:29Speaker 5: there's some injury questions with him, so as much as
- 25:32Speaker 5: I like him, with the player as a player, I.
- 25:35Speaker 4: Maybe not under sould definitely misinterpreted.
- 25:38Speaker 5: You know, I don't know about underrated, because I do
- 25:41Speaker 5: think there's some real bust potential from a lot of
- 25:43Speaker 5: these players compared to the guys we've talked about in
- 25:45Speaker 5: those spots the last few years. But like, if they hit,
- 25:47Speaker 5: they're going to be tremendous hits. If that may I
- 25:50Speaker 5: don't even know if that makes sense, Like if that
- 25:51Speaker 5: makes sense, that that's how I.
- 25:53Speaker 3: Hear what you're saying. I guess maybe the it's not
- 25:57Speaker 3: so much the top end talent because I don't think
- 25:59Speaker 3: that there's you know, necessarily a Molik Neighbors or Marvin
- 26:04Speaker 3: Harrison Junior or that kind of prospect in this draft.
- 26:07Speaker 3: But I do think that they're you know, the more
- 26:09Speaker 3: that I talked to people, like I said, that know
- 26:11Speaker 3: way more about the draft than I do at this point. Uh,
- 26:14Speaker 3: they they talked a lot about the depth.
- 26:16Speaker 5: It's a really good day too. So I think Day
- 26:19Speaker 5: three is thinner than it's been. I think the first
- 26:22Speaker 5: round is thinner than it's been. The Day two group
- 26:25Speaker 5: is excellent. And that gets back to the point where
- 26:28Speaker 5: there's guys that have first round potential, but there's ifs
- 26:32Speaker 5: with them more so than usual.
- 26:35Speaker 3: Yeah, like a couple of guys you know that, Like
- 26:37Speaker 3: we haven't mentioned a Branch a lot from Georgia because
- 26:40Speaker 3: he's kind of like a Pop Douglas type plaything.
- 26:43Speaker 8: You know.
- 26:44Speaker 5: Today like thirty percent of his targets came on screens,
- 26:47Speaker 5: or thirty percent of the rats he ran.
- 26:48Speaker 3: Yeah, I like that. Yeah, yeah, I believe that. But
- 26:52Speaker 3: you know, obviously his we're here at the combine, so
- 26:55Speaker 3: guys that can move like that are the guys that
- 26:57Speaker 3: we're talking about, right, you know, And he's definitely on
- 27:00Speaker 3: that list, a guy that most people expect to run
- 27:03Speaker 3: really fast. I haven't watched this guy yet, but I've
- 27:07Speaker 3: heard a lot of buzz about Ted Hurst from Georgia State. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 27:14Speaker 3: a lot of people talking about him too.
- 27:17Speaker 5: The guy I want to ask you about, Well, so
- 27:19Speaker 5: I want to ask you about Chris Brasel because we
- 27:21Speaker 5: need to talk about that.
- 27:22Speaker 4: But we'll do that in a minute.
- 27:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I gotta I gotta tell Elder that I'm sorry.
- 27:26Speaker 5: Have have you watched Chris Bell? And and where are
- 27:31Speaker 5: you at with Chris Bell? And you know, I'm sure
- 27:33Speaker 5: it's the combine. The teams will get the medical updates.
- 27:36Speaker 3: We'll see if we.
- 27:37Speaker 4: Get anything reported.
- 27:38Speaker 5: For those who know, Chris Bell was on track to
- 27:41Speaker 5: be a first round pick and out of Louisville. Looks
- 27:45Speaker 5: like the guy that that me and you have talked
- 27:47Speaker 5: about the Patriots adding for a while, like an explosive X,
- 27:50Speaker 5: a guy an X that that can run, you know,
- 27:53Speaker 5: in the four threes, but actually has some play strength
- 27:56Speaker 5: and some power, not Taekwon Thornton, a guy that can
- 27:58Speaker 5: go up and make plays on the football. Was on
- 28:01Speaker 5: track to be that guy be a first round pick
- 28:02Speaker 5: towards the ACL in December, so not October December. He's
- 28:07Speaker 5: not gonna be ready for camp or would be astonishing,
- 28:10Speaker 5: I should say, if he's ready for camp, I don't know.
- 28:11Speaker 4: Definitively, but put a tremendous talent.
- 28:15Speaker 5: I don't know that the Patriots are in a position
- 28:16Speaker 5: to take a guy like that at that position. I
- 28:18Speaker 5: think you want a guy that's gonna, you know, be
- 28:21Speaker 5: part of his first camp and be ready and all that.
- 28:24Speaker 5: But like I was ready for Chris Bell to be
- 28:26Speaker 5: my guy and stand on the table for Chris Bell
- 28:28Speaker 5: before the injury. So I don't know if you've watched
- 28:30Speaker 5: him at all, but like he it's even though he's
- 28:33Speaker 5: not participating, I think it's a big week for him
- 28:36Speaker 5: to get those medicals.
- 28:38Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I think that it terrifies me, frankly for
- 28:43Speaker 3: them to take somebody that has that kind of injury.
- 28:46Speaker 3: Not because like listen, guys bounced back from ACLS all
- 28:49Speaker 3: that we just watched theefon Diggs have a thousand yards
- 28:51Speaker 3: bouncing back from an Aco.
- 28:52Speaker 4: Yeah, he was a proven thousand yard receiver, right.
- 28:56Speaker 3: That's That's the point I'm trying to get at, is like,
- 28:59Speaker 3: how how far behind the eight ball is Chris Bell
- 29:01Speaker 3: going to be? Even if you project that he's gonna
- 29:04Speaker 3: be a great player, Like, he's not gonna have any
- 29:06Speaker 3: rookie season, He's not gonna have a rookie mini camp,
- 29:08Speaker 3: a rookie training camp. He's gonna be very behind the
- 29:11Speaker 3: eight ball. And so that that I think would it's
- 29:15Speaker 3: not a situation where he's gonna be able to even
- 29:18Speaker 3: play next year, even if he was healthy, I would think,
- 29:20Speaker 3: because he's not gonna have any like base knowledge of
- 29:23Speaker 3: what they're doing.
- 29:24Speaker 5: He's not gonna get on the field, not gonna get
- 29:25Speaker 5: to work with the quarterback, not going to get to
- 29:27Speaker 5: run through the offense.
- 29:29Speaker 3: Right, But he's an interest. It's like, we're really yeah. Yeah.
- 29:33Speaker 3: I liked what I saw in terms of, you know,
- 29:36Speaker 3: some of the size and the ability to win the
- 29:38Speaker 3: ball down the field, which I think is something that
- 29:40Speaker 3: they have to start prioritizing. But I did worry a
- 29:44Speaker 3: little bit about the separation with him at times, and
- 29:47Speaker 3: then you add the ACL in there, and now you're like,
- 29:50Speaker 3: is he going to really have like that short area
- 29:52Speaker 3: of quickness, that ability to beat press? You know, like
- 29:55Speaker 3: that sort of thing would concern me with the guy
- 29:57Speaker 3: coming off in ACL. We do need to talk about
- 30:00Speaker 3: Chris bra.
- 30:00Speaker 5: So, Okay, I and I think we both maybe misspoke
- 30:04Speaker 5: a little bit last week.
- 30:05Speaker 3: So I gotta I gotta do a man coupla. Though
- 30:08Speaker 3: I got it, Biggie was right.
- 30:11Speaker 4: You can't deny that partially Chris is right.
- 30:14Speaker 3: He was right.
- 30:15Speaker 5: He's the ex Tennessee and that comes with you know,
- 30:19Speaker 5: we we've been through Jalen Hyatt, We've been through who's
- 30:22Speaker 5: the other one?
- 30:24Speaker 4: The other guys. There's like three guys that are all
- 30:26Speaker 4: very similar.
- 30:27Speaker 3: Dante Thornton, Tennessee guy, Jayleen, Josh Palmer. Not a great
- 30:36Speaker 3: track record now, look not great.
- 30:38Speaker 5: He fit he and he fit. They recruited him for
- 30:41Speaker 5: a reason because he fits that role. He does have
- 30:45Speaker 5: he when you watch him in Tulane's offense, you see more.
- 30:50Speaker 4: Look, he's still a like lanky speed guy.
- 30:53Speaker 5: I think as far as lanky speed guys go, he
- 30:55Speaker 5: does better drop at competing for the football. I'm not
- 30:58Speaker 5: as out on him as I first thought he'd be,
- 31:00Speaker 5: but I he's still.
- 31:01Speaker 4: In that prototype.
- 31:02Speaker 5: I think he's a better prospect than any of those
- 31:04Speaker 5: guys have been that we just named. I definitely like
- 31:07Speaker 5: him better than Hyatt, than Tillman, than most of those guys.
- 31:11Speaker 5: But I still think he's in that prototype. Now that
- 31:13Speaker 5: prototype maybe with the Patriots are looking for. So there's that, Like,
- 31:16Speaker 5: he he's somebody we do definitely need to talk about.
- 31:20Speaker 4: But he's he's an interesting study. He's a fun watch.
- 31:24Speaker 3: I would say my only concern. Look, all these guys
- 31:28Speaker 3: have bust potential, so I'm not saying it's like the
- 31:30Speaker 3: only thing that reason why he would fail. But I
- 31:33Speaker 3: guess my biggest concern with him is obviously the translation
- 31:37Speaker 3: of the Tennessee offense into the pros. Now, him being
- 31:41Speaker 3: a transfer is maybe helping him a little bit late.
- 31:44Speaker 5: Not to put you on the spot, how much of
- 31:46Speaker 5: any of him at Tulane did you watch?
- 31:47Speaker 3: Yeah? Not not enough yet, and so maybe I need
- 31:51Speaker 3: to go back to Tulane and watch that a little
- 31:53Speaker 3: bit more. Because the skill set that I saw at Tennessee,
- 31:56Speaker 3: uh really impressed me a lot. Like to the point
- 31:59Speaker 3: where I would like say that this is kind of
- 32:01Speaker 3: my wide receiver in this class because it's twofold, Like
- 32:07Speaker 3: one of it is about Drake May and the way
- 32:09Speaker 3: that they're going to build this offense moving forward, and
- 32:12Speaker 3: some of it's about Brazzle himself. But I just look
- 32:14Speaker 3: at a guy that's six foot five that moves that
- 32:17Speaker 3: well at that size and catches the ball that well
- 32:21Speaker 3: down the field like that. That's a rare sort of
- 32:24Speaker 3: holy trinity there.
- 32:25Speaker 5: So that the key thing, sorry, the last thing you said,
- 32:29Speaker 5: because it's fast and season right fast, and if I were, yes,
- 32:33Speaker 5: if you're trying to sell me on Chris Brasel, fast and.
- 32:38Speaker 3: Sentence contested catchability there, you can cattegrate the difference, you know,
- 32:43Speaker 3: like yeah, Like so his six foot five frame allows
- 32:46Speaker 3: him not only to go up and win the ball vertically,
- 32:49Speaker 3: you know, jump balls, but he also uses it really
- 32:52Speaker 3: well going over the middle of the field. And there's
- 32:54Speaker 3: a couple of plays I put him up on Twitter
- 32:57Speaker 3: where like the quarterback threw the ball a little bit
- 32:59Speaker 3: behind him, are a little bit high, and he's able
- 33:01Speaker 3: to make those adjustments and make those catches because of
- 33:04Speaker 3: his catch radius. So I actually don't even think you
- 33:08Speaker 3: know his speed is good. I'm actually really interested to
- 33:11Speaker 3: see what he runs here this week. But I think
- 33:15Speaker 3: that his speed is more like long striding speed where
- 33:19Speaker 3: he's kind of because he's six with five, he's kind
- 33:21Speaker 3: of stumping up to it, right. He's just really once
- 33:25Speaker 3: he starts to build speed on the vertical plane, he
- 33:27Speaker 3: gets really up to that top speed, then he can
- 33:30Speaker 3: really fly. I was impressive with his press releases. It
- 33:33Speaker 3: wasn't a ton of exposure to that at Tennessee, but
- 33:35Speaker 3: the little bit of limited sample size that we have
- 33:38Speaker 3: was really impressive. I think that the guy that comes
- 33:42Speaker 3: to mind, and I've heard a lot of Christian Watson
- 33:44Speaker 3: comps with him, but I think Christian Watson's different. I think,
- 33:48Speaker 3: to me, Christian Watson was like smoother as an athlete. Yeah,
- 33:56Speaker 3: like Christian Watson coming out of college. Remember he would
- 33:59Speaker 3: like play running back snaps and stuff like that at
- 34:01Speaker 3: at North Dakota State. Like he was doing. Yeah, like
- 34:05Speaker 3: he was he was. He's a loose mover like that
- 34:07Speaker 3: guy has different sort of flexibility to his his frame
- 34:11Speaker 3: and his body. The guy that I thought of when
- 34:13Speaker 3: I watched Chris Brazle and again this is ceiling ceiling ceiling,
- 34:16Speaker 3: like we always say this time of year. T Higgins
- 34:19Speaker 3: was the guy that came to mind to me, I
- 34:25Speaker 3: think he I think he doesn't now, but if if
- 34:28Speaker 3: you went back and like kind of looked at T
- 34:30Speaker 3: Higgins back in college before his frame kind of built
- 34:34Speaker 3: up and filled out, I think that's the type of
- 34:36Speaker 3: guy that I I think that he could be. Uh
- 34:38Speaker 3: And you know, you it's funny that you mentioned play
- 34:40Speaker 3: strength because I got something from Vrabel.
- 34:44Speaker 4: That but reminds me a little bit of Brian Thomas.
- 34:49Speaker 3: Yeah, I could see that too. I could see that
- 34:51Speaker 3: one too. You know, some of the things that he
- 34:53Speaker 3: did against Georgia on that tape against Georgia, and he
- 34:57Speaker 3: because he's probably gonna get drafted in like the fifty,
- 35:00Speaker 3: maybe super high, strictly off the fact that he went
- 35:03Speaker 3: for one hundred and seventy seven yards and three touchdowns
- 35:06Speaker 3: against Troy, right like that, When you do that against
- 35:09Speaker 3: that level of competition, it's gonna really stand out. But
- 35:12Speaker 3: some of the things that he was doing, you know,
- 35:14Speaker 3: winning jump balls down the field, the separation ability, I
- 35:17Speaker 3: was like, you know, this guy, this guy's really got it.
- 35:20Speaker 3: So I want to give Biggie big Aldred his his
- 35:24Speaker 3: props because we teased them a little bit for it.
- 35:27Speaker 3: We got on them for the fastand thing and the
- 35:29Speaker 3: Tennessee wide receiver thing. And this guy is definitely somebody
- 35:33Speaker 3: that when he tired talking about like a Drake may
- 35:36Speaker 3: prototype at wide receiver, this is sort of what you're
- 35:40Speaker 3: talking about, right, A guy that can really win a
- 35:42Speaker 3: vertical speed and then he's got the six foot five ability.
- 35:45Speaker 3: It's kind of like, you know, a souped up Mac Collins. Yeah,
- 35:49Speaker 3: which is what I think they kind of need to
- 35:51Speaker 3: go for. Is somebody that's got a little bit more
- 35:53Speaker 3: explosiveness and ceiling than Matt Collins, but is in a
- 35:56Speaker 3: similar frame to Mac Collins.
- 35:58Speaker 4: What was the thing about play strength?
- 36:01Speaker 3: Yeah, so one of the interesting things I asked Rabel
- 36:04Speaker 3: at the end of our interview I'm sure will be
- 36:05Speaker 3: posted soon our me and du sat down with him,
- 36:09Speaker 3: so our Patriots dot Com interview with him. No, that
- 36:16Speaker 3: was that was that was off off the interview, but
- 36:19Speaker 3: I can I think I can share that in the second.
- 36:22Speaker 3: But the the question that I asked him was about
- 36:26Speaker 3: the offense from the regular season to the playoffs and
- 36:30Speaker 3: sort of what was his take about why the offense
- 36:33Speaker 3: wasn't quite as successful in the playoffs as it was
- 36:36Speaker 3: in the regular season. And the answer that he gave me,
- 36:40Speaker 3: I thought was really interesting because he said that we
- 36:43Speaker 3: need to lift. And I thought that he meant metaphorically
- 36:48Speaker 3: at forst like we need to like elevate our talent,
- 36:52Speaker 3: like elevate our play in the playoffs. He meant literally,
- 36:57Speaker 3: like he literally thinks that as an offense, that they
- 37:00Speaker 3: need to get stronger and they need to get more physical,
- 37:04Speaker 3: and they need to He's told his story. It was
- 37:07Speaker 3: a really good story, so people should really check it out.
- 37:09Speaker 3: He told a really good story about Brady Tom Brady
- 37:15Speaker 3: at the beginning part of Tom Brady's career, and he
- 37:17Speaker 3: said that everybody talks about the TB twelve method and
- 37:21Speaker 3: all that that sort of happened he said around six
- 37:23Speaker 3: oh seven, But he said that early on in Brady's career,
- 37:28Speaker 3: like one to oh two, Brady was like lifting with
- 37:32Speaker 3: like the defensive and offensive lineman. Like he was doing
- 37:37Speaker 3: like cleans and squats and like you know, all like
- 37:41Speaker 3: really like building up his his natural play strength is power,
- 37:46Speaker 3: you know, like his his strength literally and uh, and
- 37:50Speaker 3: he was kept saying, you know, he really said that
- 37:53Speaker 3: that's like what he's looking for. And it wasn't just
- 37:55Speaker 3: about Drake May specifically. I think it was about the
- 37:58Speaker 3: whole offense. But I just look at you know that
- 38:00Speaker 3: in terms of Will Campbell, Jared Wilson, Drake May. But
- 38:05Speaker 3: I think also in a general sense, I wouldn't be
- 38:08Speaker 3: surprised if they are looking and targeting offensive players. That
- 38:12Speaker 3: play strength is something that they are checking off, right,
- 38:17Speaker 3: And we've talked about this offensive line being a little
- 38:20Speaker 3: bit more finesse, you know, they they just they just
- 38:24Speaker 3: have a little bit more of a finesse a group,
- 38:26Speaker 3: a little bit more of an athletic group versus a
- 38:28Speaker 3: powerful group. And so I wonder if they are going
- 38:31Speaker 3: to look at trying to add a left guard or
- 38:33Speaker 3: somebody that's going to start for them next year, Like
- 38:36Speaker 3: I would imagine it's going to be somebody that they
- 38:38Speaker 3: feel like is going to bring some of that, you know,
- 38:40Speaker 3: some of that play strengths, some nastiness, run blocking ability.
- 38:46Speaker 3: I think that that's going to be a priority, but
- 38:48Speaker 3: also play strength. You also talk you know, anchor, you know,
- 38:50Speaker 3: being able to absorb power, you know, and pass rushers
- 38:54Speaker 3: and things like that too, So I thought that that
- 38:57Speaker 3: was fascinating and him talking, you know, he was kind
- 39:00Speaker 3: of like saying, like we always talk about the pliability
- 39:03Speaker 3: and the diet and all that stuff that Brady did
- 39:06Speaker 3: to sustain and and play into his forties, but he
- 39:09Speaker 3: said that he really transformed transformed his body, uh in
- 39:14Speaker 3: the weight room right before he even got to that point. Yeah.
- 39:19Speaker 5: Interesting, I mean that, look, I I we've both kind
- 39:23Speaker 5: of talked about them one to A had a garden
- 39:25Speaker 5: in free agency. But Emmanuel Pregnant from Oregon pops right
- 39:28Speaker 5: in my mind. When you talk about the violence, the nastiness,
- 39:31Speaker 5: all of that. I love, you know, you know me,
- 39:34Speaker 5: I'm I'm in on bully ball. And that kind of
- 39:36Speaker 5: goes along the lines of what Ellie Wolf said about
- 39:38Speaker 5: running back that you know, guys that can can hit
- 39:42Speaker 5: the whole force and that kind of thing. And you know,
- 39:44Speaker 5: we didn't really talk much about the release of Antonio Gibson.
- 39:48Speaker 5: That they do still have land Larson, they have Elijah
- 39:51Speaker 5: Mitchell on a on a future's deal, so those guys
- 39:53Speaker 5: will compete Drell Jennings. But you need a third back.
- 39:56Speaker 5: We saw it this year. You need a third back.
- 39:58Speaker 5: That you're comfortable turning to. And it's in the draft,
- 40:00Speaker 5: whether it's in free agency, that's a need now. And
- 40:04Speaker 5: so I know we've talked about them maybe getting the
- 40:06Speaker 5: speed guy or the pass catching guys encounter to what
- 40:09Speaker 5: they have I throughout Desmond Reid last week, and they
- 40:13Speaker 5: might look for another bully. You know, they might look
- 40:15Speaker 5: for a guy who's gonna gonna lower his helmet and
- 40:19Speaker 5: hit somebody back when he's carrying the football.
- 40:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I think they just felt, like you know, Rabel
- 40:25Speaker 3: clearly did based off of that answer. I think he
- 40:27Speaker 3: just felt like they kind of got bullied by Seattle
- 40:30Speaker 3: and all the fronts that they played. And I think
- 40:33Speaker 3: that that's valid. Like I think he's that we all
- 40:36Speaker 3: saw that, right. I mean how many times did we
- 40:38Speaker 3: talk about Will Campbell and Jared Wilson and their anchor
- 40:40Speaker 3: and their you know ability to absorb power and you
- 40:43Speaker 3: know them getting pushed back into the quarterback and like
- 40:45Speaker 3: all that kind of stuff. You know, he said it.
- 40:48Speaker 3: You know, the Drake may is twenty three, Will Campbell's
- 40:50Speaker 3: twenty two. Like those guys are going to get bigger
- 40:52Speaker 3: and stronger, and uh, now they just got to go
- 40:54Speaker 3: out there and do it. But I think this offseason offensively,
- 40:58Speaker 3: you know, I think that that's going to be a
- 41:00Speaker 3: real focus. And I wonder too, you know, talking about receivers,
- 41:04Speaker 3: because we were talking about some of these bigger guys,
- 41:06Speaker 3: which was what made me think of it, Like I
- 41:10Speaker 3: love the small, shifty, quick guys, you know, you know that,
- 41:13Speaker 3: Like I had those A Flowers and things like that.
- 41:15Speaker 3: You know, I think Casey CONCEPSI owns that guy. I
- 41:18Speaker 3: think Omark Cooper Junior is in that prototype. I love
- 41:20Speaker 3: all those types of players, but that doesn't necessarily fit
- 41:25Speaker 3: that sort of mentality. And then I would also say
- 41:27Speaker 3: at tight end, like when we go back to the
- 41:29Speaker 3: blocking thing, like I think they already need a guy
- 41:33Speaker 3: that can block a little bit better, just based off
- 41:35Speaker 3: of what they put out there on film last year,
- 41:38Speaker 3: and now if they really are trying to focus on
- 41:40Speaker 3: being a more physical upfront, like that also points to
- 41:44Speaker 3: you know, okay, well now maybe they really need to
- 41:46Speaker 3: start thinking about guys that can block at the tight
- 41:49Speaker 3: end position versus just catching passes.
- 41:51Speaker 5: So I want to get into that in a minute.
- 41:53Speaker 5: We have some emails on that one other position that
- 41:55Speaker 5: Wolf talked about that I think is really being understated
- 42:00Speaker 5: as a need is safety, especially if Jalen Hawkins doesn't
- 42:04Speaker 5: come back. And Wolfe's comments kind of made it like
- 42:06Speaker 5: he wolf said they wanted back, but also like he's
- 42:08Speaker 5: going to go test the market.
- 42:10Speaker 4: So he's twenty nine years old, he's coming off a
- 42:12Speaker 4: career year.
- 42:13Speaker 5: It's his last chance, probably his last chance to really
- 42:15Speaker 5: cash in. So we'll see what happens there. And this
- 42:19Speaker 5: is another one. You talked about it with the edge rushers,
- 42:21Speaker 5: that it's different than what we were used to with Bill.
- 42:25Speaker 4: You know that old defense. It was two very defined roles.
- 42:28Speaker 5: It was the free safety in the strong safety, the
- 42:30Speaker 5: deep safety in the box safety. It was Devin mccordy
- 42:32Speaker 5: and it was Patrick Chung and it was always kind
- 42:34Speaker 5: of you that way. Wolf gets asked what he wants
- 42:37Speaker 5: from safeties, he says, the safety position.
- 42:39Speaker 4: They have to be able to do everything.
- 42:42Speaker 5: They have to be able to play down in the box,
- 42:43Speaker 5: man cover, tackling space. Having guys that are interchangeable just
- 42:47Speaker 5: kind of opens up a lot of different things for
- 42:48Speaker 5: the defense that Zach Korn Terrell Williams can employee goes
- 42:52Speaker 5: on to talk about communication pre snap also being important,
- 42:56Speaker 5: but says on the field's athleticism, it's to change a direction,
- 42:59Speaker 5: the speed and range, the anticipation. So it's not okay,
- 43:03Speaker 5: you're free safety or box safety. And look, Craig Woodson
- 43:06Speaker 5: fits into this, so it makes sense, you know, looking
- 43:09Speaker 5: for the well rounded guys. I do think this is
- 43:11Speaker 5: a good safety class. I think they're gonna have an
- 43:12Speaker 5: opportunity to add both in free agency and the draft.
- 43:15Speaker 5: I think it's a good class. But that's another one
- 43:17Speaker 5: where to go back to your quote. We had to
- 43:19Speaker 5: open the show about prototypes. It is kind of adjusting
- 43:22Speaker 5: the vision of what they're building.
- 43:26Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think one of the things I wrote
- 43:28Speaker 3: about in my Combine preview outs is the Dylan Dynaman
- 43:32Speaker 3: and McNeil Warren from Toledo, right, like two very first
- 43:36Speaker 3: round kind of guys that are very very different types
- 43:41Speaker 3: of players and which type in terms of body type,
- 43:45Speaker 3: in terms of skill set, are they going to gravitate
- 43:48Speaker 3: towards like McNeil Warren. I think is gonna be like
- 43:51Speaker 3: kind of a Nick Ammon Worry, Like he's gonna be
- 43:53Speaker 3: a big slot, you know, play in the box hybrid
- 43:56Speaker 3: player that plays closer to the line of scrimmage. Dyl
- 44:00Speaker 3: is definitely more of that like deep safety, So so
- 44:04Speaker 3: I think.
- 44:04Speaker 5: I mean that's I don't know, since better in the box,
- 44:07Speaker 5: I would think, so he's more of the guy that
- 44:08Speaker 5: would make sense.
- 44:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know. I guess, yeah, that's true. And
- 44:15Speaker 3: then I think the other thing that you know, I
- 44:17Speaker 3: was sort of thinking about was they played a lot
- 44:21Speaker 3: of three corner nickel this past year with Marcus Jones
- 44:26Speaker 3: in the slide and Marcus Jones a great player. Nobody's
- 44:28Speaker 3: trying to replace or do anything with Marcus Jones. But
- 44:32Speaker 3: one of the things that some people were concerned about,
- 44:35Speaker 3: and we kind of poo pooed it during the regular
- 44:36Speaker 3: season when they were winning all those games, was their
- 44:40Speaker 3: ability to stop the run out of nickel defense and
- 44:45Speaker 3: not having an option of having like a bigger safety
- 44:48Speaker 3: nickel safety, like a Nick Gammon Warry type that would
- 44:53Speaker 3: be able to play there and kind of make a
- 44:55Speaker 3: big nickel package out of right where they have three
- 44:57Speaker 3: safeties on the field and one of them is kind
- 44:59Speaker 3: of like one of those hybrid types of players. I
- 45:02Speaker 3: don't know if there's necessarily that role for that in
- 45:05Speaker 3: this defense, which is what I'm sort of interested in
- 45:07Speaker 3: but they played all this quarters coverage last year, and
- 45:11Speaker 3: they play they had Marcus Jones playing a lot of
- 45:14Speaker 3: you know, so are like hook and you know, flat
- 45:17Speaker 3: corner type of roles in that quarters which also puts
- 45:21Speaker 3: a lot of emphasis on stopping the run and filling
- 45:24Speaker 3: the alleys and that sort of thing. And I get
- 45:26Speaker 3: it's one game. We don't want to overreact. But then
- 45:28Speaker 3: they get to the Super Bowl and where did Kenneth
- 45:30Speaker 3: Walker kill them off the edges?
- 45:32Speaker 9: Right?
- 45:32Speaker 3: I was outside runs, bouncing runs, you know, hitting the edge,
- 45:36Speaker 3: And so I just wonder, you know, when they look
- 45:39Speaker 3: at safety, if they do have to move on from
- 45:41Speaker 3: Jalen Hawkins and and try to target one in the draft,
- 45:44Speaker 3: you know, do they start to think about guys that
- 45:47Speaker 3: can be more of like hybrids or is that completely gone?
- 45:50Speaker 3: Like are we are?
- 45:51Speaker 2: We?
- 45:52Speaker 3: Is that a Belichick thing? And we've we totally moved
- 45:54Speaker 3: past that because you know, Hawkins and Woods and I
- 45:56Speaker 3: would say were more interchangeable up top than they were
- 46:00Speaker 3: in terms of being able to play down closer to
- 46:02Speaker 3: the line of scrimmage.
- 46:03Speaker 5: I'll just say it again too, like even if they
- 46:05Speaker 5: keep Hawkins, you know, all right, you run some five
- 46:08Speaker 5: defensive back sets with Marcus Jones. But maybe there's matchups
- 46:11Speaker 5: where you'd rather have five defensive back sets with the safety.
- 46:14Speaker 4: You know, maybe there's some I w'll talk about.
- 46:17Speaker 3: Draft getting into more more dime stuff too. Yeah, Like
- 46:21Speaker 3: that's the thing that I've been killing pounding the table
- 46:24Speaker 3: for is you know, be more flexible and more multiple
- 46:28Speaker 3: by playing more six defensive backs. And they did that
- 46:30Speaker 3: a little bit, I would say, down the stretch with
- 46:33Speaker 3: del Pettis, but like in no offensive del penals, you
- 46:36Speaker 3: can agree maybe that player that's a little bit better.
- 46:39Speaker 5: That's even where you know, those coverage linebackers come in,
- 46:41Speaker 5: whether it's it's Kyle Lewis or Lander Barton or you know,
- 46:46Speaker 5: if they really want to invest. I mean there was
- 46:50Speaker 5: something today about CJ. Allen or like he was calling
- 46:52Speaker 5: the George defense, which is insane. Yeah, but no, I
- 46:56Speaker 5: think they need more depth of safety anyway, Like I
- 47:00Speaker 5: did you watch aj Halsey yet.
- 47:03Speaker 3: No, I gotta get to all the rest of the safeties.
- 47:05Speaker 3: But the other one that I was gonna just say
- 47:08Speaker 3: with that too is you know, Elliott Wolf did throw
- 47:11Speaker 3: in there that they would like to draft a linebacker
- 47:13Speaker 3: at some point and I think that it was more Blaine.
- 47:18Speaker 3: We have Christian Ellis. Like, I don't necessarily look at
- 47:21Speaker 3: it as they're going to draft one in the first
- 47:23Speaker 3: round necessarily based off what he said. But I do
- 47:26Speaker 3: think they want to add a younger player to that
- 47:28Speaker 3: room behind Splaine, behind Ellis, maybe even thinking about Splaine
- 47:32Speaker 3: is what thirty yeah, thirty one at this point, I
- 47:36Speaker 3: maybe could think about about that too.
- 47:38Speaker 5: They can find a guy too that's more for like
- 47:40Speaker 5: a third down specialist that they could play with Splaine
- 47:43Speaker 5: or even with Ellis. He takes splayne off the field
- 47:45Speaker 5: on third downs, And because we saw teams hunt them
- 47:47Speaker 5: and coverage last year. And if you get a coverage
- 47:50Speaker 5: linebacker and you put him next to Ellis, I mean,
- 47:52Speaker 5: now you're you probably don't want to do that on
- 47:54Speaker 5: like third and two where they can run the ball,
- 47:56Speaker 5: but on third and ten that that wouldn't be a
- 47:58Speaker 5: bad package about that. I don't know ho much they
- 47:59Speaker 5: want to explain off the field, but it is I
- 48:02Speaker 5: don't know how many linebackers you've watched. It is a
- 48:04Speaker 5: really this is one of the bet What was that
- 48:07Speaker 5: one year where we were like drooling over the linebacker
- 48:11Speaker 5: class and they really needed one, and we were like, well,
- 48:13Speaker 5: they're gonna get someone, it's just a matter of where.
- 48:15Speaker 4: And they didn't take any I.
- 48:16Speaker 5: Think that was oddly enough. I think there was a
- 48:18Speaker 5: Chad Muma year who ended up here.
- 48:21Speaker 3: Sounds right, but I feel like I was a big
- 48:24Speaker 3: I believed in Chad Muma.
- 48:26Speaker 5: I feel like since then we really haven't had a
- 48:30Speaker 5: good linebacker class. Hang, I'm trying to figure out what
- 48:32Speaker 5: year that was. It wasn't a.
- 48:34Speaker 4: Twenty one, Yeah, it was twenty two. It was Devin Lloyd, Devin.
- 48:39Speaker 5: Lloyd, Nakobe, Dean kway Walker, Chad Muma, Christian Harris, Leoshanal
- 48:44Speaker 5: Troy Anderson, Channing Tyndall.
- 48:47Speaker 4: I thought Nick what's his name on the Chiefs, who
- 48:52Speaker 4: we really liked, was in this class too. I guess not.
- 48:55Speaker 5: Bolton, No, but this was It was a good, good class.
- 49:00Speaker 5: Nate Landman is hung around. I liked him anyway. I
- 49:03Speaker 5: feel like two guys.
- 49:04Speaker 3: We heard from today were C. J. Allen and Anthony
- 49:08Speaker 3: Hill Junior from Texas. We heard from all of them,
- 49:11Speaker 3: but those two guys were the ones that people were
- 49:13Speaker 3: kind of talking about more. His first round type prospects. Uh,
- 49:18Speaker 3: you know, what I saw with Allan, I thought, I
- 49:21Speaker 3: think they're kind of different. Honestly, Like I saw Hill
- 49:23Speaker 3: as more of a playmaker Alan I when I watched him,
- 49:27Speaker 3: like at first, I was like, this guy's the first round.
- 49:31Speaker 3: You have to kind of really dig deep with him
- 49:33Speaker 3: to sort of understand this. Where his uh was CJ.
- 49:38Speaker 3: Allen from Georgia. Uh, I felt like, you know, he
- 49:41Speaker 3: was more of like a dirty work kind of player.
- 49:44Speaker 3: You know, that was like plugging gaps and you know,
- 49:46Speaker 3: filling the run and then you know you start to
- 49:48Speaker 3: see a little bit more playmaking there. But I think
- 49:51Speaker 3: that he was kind of more, you know, honestly, like
- 49:54Speaker 3: a Robert Splain type, right, that's just going to come
- 49:56Speaker 3: in and and just kind of fill role, do his job,
- 50:01Speaker 3: do it well, like sort of steadiness right where you're
- 50:04Speaker 3: not talking necessarily, Whereas like Anthony Hill when I watched
- 50:08Speaker 3: him from Texas, I saw more of like kind of
- 50:11Speaker 3: like that Jamie Collins type of player, right that is
- 50:13Speaker 3: very splashy, but maybe it was a little bit more
- 50:16Speaker 3: inconsistent around the edges, right, you know, so he can play,
- 50:20Speaker 3: he can blitz, he can rush off the edge, he
- 50:22Speaker 3: can cover well, you know, I think he had a
- 50:24Speaker 3: like fifty something pressures in college as a as a rusher,
- 50:28Speaker 3: you know, as a blitzer and an edge rusher. But
- 50:31Speaker 3: there wasn't meant necessarily that like down to down consistency
- 50:34Speaker 3: with him where it was CJ.
- 50:36Speaker 4: Allen.
- 50:37Speaker 3: It was kind of the opposite, like he was like
- 50:38Speaker 3: more of like the steady, you know, worker bee, but
- 50:42Speaker 3: wasn't necessarily like super flashy on the tape.
- 50:46Speaker 5: I'm gonna give you uh one more probably homework. I
- 50:50Speaker 5: don't know if if you watched Jacob Rodriguez.
- 50:52Speaker 3: Yet, No, but I've heard his name a million times
- 50:56Speaker 3: this week. So he's gonna be on the list. That's
- 50:59Speaker 3: that's for sure. I mean, you know what everybody would
- 51:02Speaker 3: be graduated with him? Yeah, good things, Yeah, good things.
- 51:06Speaker 3: And you know, good things about this whole linebacker class. Honestly,
- 51:09Speaker 3: you know, I think that that's really a strength of
- 51:12Speaker 3: the draft to you know, front seven in general. Yeah,
- 51:15Speaker 3: it sounds like everybody's pretty high on the defensive line.
- 51:19Speaker 3: You know, maybe we can get into the defensive line.
- 51:22Speaker 3: The defensive line is definitely different.
- 51:23Speaker 5: Oh, when you were you were texting me about Big
- 51:25Speaker 5: Citrus earlier.
- 51:28Speaker 3: Big Citrus, you know, but like that That's sort of
- 51:31Speaker 3: what I'm getting at, Like with Big Citrus, all of
- 51:34Speaker 3: a sudden, those tackles are back like we did. We
- 51:37Speaker 3: did this whole thing where like for like a half
- 51:39Speaker 3: a decade, everybody was like trying to be built like
- 51:42Speaker 3: Aaron Donald right where everybody is or I guess it
- 51:44Speaker 3: shouldn't like Milton Williams right like everybody's trying to be
- 51:48Speaker 3: two ninety ninety five, you know, elite pass rush ability
- 51:53Speaker 3: like that sort of thing. And now in this draft,
- 51:55Speaker 3: Alex everybody is like a three and thirty pound nose tackle.
- 51:59Speaker 4: But can get after the car back a little bit,
- 52:03Speaker 4: a little bit.
- 52:03Speaker 3: But they're definitely power oriented players right like they're they're
- 52:07Speaker 3: built on their size and their power. Like, uh, I
- 52:11Speaker 3: thought the Banks kid from Florida was really impressive, you know,
- 52:15Speaker 3: like I I think that he's got that mentality and
- 52:19Speaker 3: you know, you do wonder you know, Kiris Tonga is
- 52:21Speaker 3: a free agent. What's going to be his future? Christian Barmore,
- 52:26Speaker 3: what's his future going to be with? What's going on
- 52:29Speaker 3: with him?
- 52:29Speaker 8: Well?
- 52:30Speaker 4: The Georgia defense, do come up the one?
- 52:33Speaker 3: Yeah exception?
- 52:34Speaker 5: If I have it right, I want to double chow. Yeah,
- 52:36Speaker 5: Christian Miller is kind of the exception of that. He
- 52:38Speaker 5: is that smaller, attacking defensive tackle.
- 52:41Speaker 4: Do you see him as a.
- 52:42Speaker 3: Fit, Yeah, I know, the kid from Clemson to Walker, right, Yeah,
- 52:48Speaker 3: he was a little bit more. I mean Woods, Peter Woods, Woods, Woods.
- 52:52Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean they're not gonna have a shot, He's
- 52:53Speaker 4: gonna be gone.
- 52:54Speaker 3: But yeah, yeah, yeah, he was definitely more. You know,
- 52:58Speaker 3: he had that short area quickness and that ability to
- 53:01Speaker 3: get into the gaps and yeah, win across people's faces
- 53:04Speaker 3: and like things like that. Like, definitely more of that
- 53:07Speaker 3: type of player. I think that that would be the
- 53:11Speaker 3: type of player I would think they would be interested in,
- 53:13Speaker 3: just based off of Milton Williams, Like I think is
- 53:16Speaker 3: their prototype, right, Like, that's clearly when you go and
- 53:19Speaker 3: spend twenty six million dollars a year on a player
- 53:21Speaker 3: like that's clearly the type of player that you want.
- 53:24Speaker 3: But if they lose Tonga or if they want to
- 53:27Speaker 3: upgrade on you know, I think he had a great
- 53:29Speaker 3: season last year, but like Corey Durdin or just add
- 53:32Speaker 3: depth in general to that play that position. You know,
- 53:36Speaker 3: there's a lot in that range too, about like twenty
- 53:39Speaker 3: to forty range in this draft right where they're gonna
- 53:41Speaker 3: be picking of these like big you know, Lee Hunter
- 53:44Speaker 3: and Banks and you know these just like big dudes
- 53:48Speaker 3: that are basically pure nose tackles, which I think is
- 53:52Speaker 3: like something that's been totally dead in the draft for
- 53:55Speaker 3: a while now.
- 53:56Speaker 5: It's been the NFL is cyclical. I've been saying this,
- 53:59Speaker 5: like the offenses, the defenses were big, so the offenses
- 54:02Speaker 5: got smaller and quicker to counter it. And then you
- 54:05Speaker 5: had this age of offense and everybody said that's the
- 54:07Speaker 5: NFL now. And then defense has got smaller and quicker
- 54:10Speaker 5: it's to counter it. And so now what do you
- 54:12Speaker 5: have fullbacks coming back? You know, two tight ends were
- 54:15Speaker 5: becoming more popular. We talked about this a lot during
- 54:17Speaker 5: the season, Evan that that was kind of the adjustment
- 54:19Speaker 5: to all these teams playing quarters and living in too
- 54:22Speaker 5: high and things like that. What's the logical next step?
- 54:26Speaker 5: Here comes the two hundred and sixty pound linebackers. Here
- 54:29Speaker 5: come the nose tackles. Like it's just this is what
- 54:31Speaker 5: I love about football and love about you know, this
- 54:33Speaker 5: time of year in the roster building concept, you're trying
- 54:36Speaker 5: to react I think to.
- 54:37Speaker 4: The latest hit thing.
- 54:40Speaker 3: Yeah, you nailed it right there. And I just would
- 54:43Speaker 3: mention Kaden McDonald from Ohio State and that as well.
- 54:47Speaker 4: That's another guy.
- 54:47Speaker 5: I think he's supposed to go a little higher. Maybe
- 54:50Speaker 5: maybe for thirty one.
- 54:52Speaker 3: If that's a guy. If you want a guy that
- 54:55Speaker 3: you know really doesn't just stuff the run, but like
- 54:58Speaker 3: makes plays against the run, you know what I mean,
- 55:00Speaker 3: Like he logged like a ton of run stuffs.
- 55:03Speaker 4: Well that's the other thing for lost. Sorry to cut off,
- 55:06Speaker 4: but that's the other thing.
- 55:07Speaker 5: Like you talked about everybody being built like Aaron Donald,
- 55:09Speaker 5: like that was the trend, the smaller athletic. Well, no
- 55:13Speaker 5: offense to ten years ago, but the three hundred and
- 55:17Speaker 5: thirty pound players now are a lot more athletic than
- 55:19Speaker 5: the three hundred thirty pound players ten years ago.
- 55:22Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, you mentioned the too high safety stuff, and
- 55:28Speaker 3: I think that's really what it comes down to, is
- 55:31Speaker 3: that so many teams are playing a man short in
- 55:34Speaker 3: the box, and so many teams are playing you know,
- 55:39Speaker 3: where you're trying to take back gaps however you can
- 55:43Speaker 3: because you're playing down you know, in terms of numbers,
- 55:46Speaker 3: you're just playing down bodies. And one of the ways
- 55:50Speaker 3: that teams do it is you know, by playing a
- 55:53Speaker 3: gap and a half technique, it's not pure two gaping.
- 55:56Speaker 3: You're still kind of have a primary gap and then
- 55:58Speaker 3: the secondary gap. But basically what the whole thing is
- 56:02Speaker 3: is like you can't you can't play all these two
- 56:04Speaker 3: high safeties and all this quarters and cover six and
- 56:07Speaker 3: too high show and then not have any beef up front.
- 56:11Speaker 3: Like that's just not gonna work. Like you're gonna just
- 56:13Speaker 3: get run on. So like now you look at you know,
- 56:16Speaker 3: I'm watching, you know, just to go back to Seattle
- 56:18Speaker 3: because they're the champs, like Byron Murphy like that. That's
- 56:22Speaker 3: that's the guy, right that kind of makes everything that
- 56:26Speaker 3: they do sort of work because he can basically command
- 56:29Speaker 3: gaps and they then fire their linebackers, you know, from
- 56:33Speaker 3: off the ball and they just try to steal gaps
- 56:35Speaker 3: back in any sort of way that they can against
- 56:38Speaker 3: the run and so that way there they can keep
- 56:40Speaker 3: their safeties back and so like that that's just like
- 56:44Speaker 3: the name of the game now is you know, these
- 56:46Speaker 3: front sevens I think are getting bigger again because they
- 56:49Speaker 3: are playing you know a lot of five and six
- 56:52Speaker 3: defensive back a lot of two high safeties, and so
- 56:54Speaker 3: what they're saying, is is like we're gonna compromise speed
- 56:58Speaker 3: now on the front seven and you know, defensive tackles
- 57:01Speaker 3: a little bit so that we can stop to run
- 57:03Speaker 3: out of those types of shells.

- 1:00:39Speaker 3: just the lasting really quickly. I'm sure we'll get asked
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: about this, but just set it and up. You know. Obviously,
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: both Elliot Wolf and Mike Rabel were asked about Christian
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: Gonzales in his contract situation, and I thought Elliot Wolf
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: kind of gave the GM answer of like, you know,
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: it's a negotiation.
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: At the end of the day, right, Rabel City, Yeah.
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: Mike r Abel put the full court press on a
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: little bit more, I would say, in terms of the
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: coaching staff's desire. He said the line that he delivered
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: both to us and our sit down and then also
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: to the local media scrum was the coaches want to
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: keep Christian Gonzalez. Jonathan and Robert Kraft want to keep
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: Christian Goanzalez. Our fans want to keep Christianzalez. Right, Like,
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: he just kind of went right down the list of
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: all the people that are invested in Christian Gonzalez's future
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: with the Patriots and being with the Patriots. And then
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: he also said the captain thing, which I wish that
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: we could have followed up with him on that. Maybe
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: we can in the future, but I'm very interested to
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: see like how he sees because he's, you know, not
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: a very vocal guy, right, so he's not going to
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: be a raw rock captain. But can he be that
- 1:01:50Speaker 3: sort of like Patrick Certan, you know, lead by example
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: kind of captain.
- 1:01:56Speaker 5: Absolutely, they've had those guys before. I don't think you
- 1:01:59Speaker 5: want that to be all six of your captains. But
- 1:02:02Speaker 5: if it's one or two, especially if it's a guy
- 1:02:04Speaker 5: that plays the game at that high of a level,
- 1:02:06Speaker 5: I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Again, eight
- 1:02:08Speaker 5: five five, Pats five hundred, or you can email us
- 1:02:11Speaker 5: podcast at Patriots dot com. Let's get started with Nate
- 1:02:16Speaker 5: in Connecticut.
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: Nate's up, Nate? Are you there? Did I take the
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: call right? I don't usually do the phone screen right?
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: Did All right?
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: Nate?
- 1:02:27Speaker 5: I'm gonna put you on hold. We'll try again in
- 1:02:30Speaker 5: a minute. Let's go to William in Montreal instead.
- 1:02:32Speaker 13: William Hi I have a few questions about a few players.
- 1:02:39Speaker 13: You guys talked about two guys that I had drafting
- 1:02:43Speaker 13: in mockcraft, but you guys did not talk about Eric
- 1:02:47Speaker 13: McAllister from TCU. Would you rather him or the guy
- 1:02:52Speaker 13: from Tennessee Chris say if I didn't pronounce that properly,
- 1:02:59Speaker 13: So who would you guys rather the pages draft between
- 1:03:03Speaker 13: those two guys?
- 1:03:05Speaker 4: Uh, thanks for the call, William H. Chris Brasel or
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: Eric McAllister.
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: It's kind of much later.
- 1:03:15Speaker 5: Yeah, it's it's kind of much the day two day
- 1:03:18Speaker 5: three thing. I don't know that McAllister has the and
- 1:03:21Speaker 5: in fast and well that's probably is the Day three guy,
- 1:03:26Speaker 5: right right, So you know, I i'd rather them have
- 1:03:29Speaker 5: the better player in Brasel. I think at least is
- 1:03:33Speaker 5: the better prospect. If you want to tell me they
- 1:03:35Speaker 5: could make better use of their picks on day two,
- 1:03:38Speaker 5: I guess maybe you know, if that's somebody you want
- 1:03:40Speaker 5: to target on day three, by all means, at that
- 1:03:42Speaker 5: point I would just wait and draft Barry and Brown
- 1:03:44Speaker 5: because he's faster and he can return kicks.
- 1:03:46Speaker 4: But I don't know. That's just my thought.
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I think if you're going out wide receiver, just
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: my opinion on it is, if you're drafting receivers, I'm
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: drafting for Sealing, Yeah, like I want, like I want,
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: But I think Kayshawn Booty, Mac Collins, if Diggs comes back, obviously,
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: like all those guys are gonna are gonna be steady
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: and gonna be consistent players. Like if they, you know,
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: play as much as they did last year. They they were,
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: you know, made it all the way to the Super
- 1:04:15Speaker 3: Bowl with that being their core wide receiver. So if
- 1:04:18Speaker 3: you're going to add a wide receiver to the mix,
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: isn't it somebody that you think can be like a
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: true you know, number one difference maker that has that
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: kind of ceiling. And I think in order to get that,
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: it's gonna have to be early, not not somebody on
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: Day three.
- 1:04:32Speaker 5: Just because I'm looking in that range and I'm sure
- 1:04:35Speaker 5: people care locally. How do you feel about Lewis Bond?
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: Well, you know, I I think that that's a player
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: that he's kind of to me, Like, you know, we
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: talked about the day two, day three thing, right, Like
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: is Casey CONCEPSI in the first round version?
- 1:04:51Speaker 4: Yeah, well it's like the high round.
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, Mkyle Lemon though I like, mkayle Lemon to me,
- 1:04:59Speaker 3: is you know more in that like aman Ross and
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: Brown mold of like he's like a physical fair slot receiver.
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: But yeah, you know what I mean, like's like physical
- 1:05:08Speaker 3: feels weird saying because he's so small.
- 1:05:10Speaker 4: But he's but it's case.
- 1:05:15Speaker 3: Omar Cooper and then Lewis Bond's kind of like that
- 1:05:18Speaker 3: Day three version of that.
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: Yeah, And so I guess like the only reason why
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: I bring that up is because if you're going to
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: do that, then like is Pop Douglas what you know what?
- 1:05:29Speaker 4: He probably.
- 1:05:32Speaker 3: Right? Like he to me is just kind of another
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: Pop Douglas, you know, smaller in pop BC is not
- 1:05:39Speaker 3: exactly a powerhouse. No offense to Bill O'Brien, you know,
- 1:05:42Speaker 3: like that's the sort of thing that we're doing.
- 1:05:44Speaker 4: Let's go to Mark in Connecticut.
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: Mark, what is going on?
- 1:05:49Speaker 5: Guys?
- 1:05:51Speaker 6: So Mark, so I know that this is probably a
- 1:05:53Speaker 6: pipe dream because we've been thinking about this since he
- 1:05:57Speaker 6: got drafted AJ Brown, What is your guys serious take?
- 1:06:03Speaker 6: Are we really in contention to get him or is
- 1:06:05Speaker 6: it a pipe three?
- 1:06:09Speaker 5: Thanks to call Mark, I if he gets traded, I
- 1:06:12Speaker 5: think it's more about whether or not the Eagles are
- 1:06:15Speaker 5: going to trade him, it's like forty something million in
- 1:06:18Speaker 5: dead money, right, Plus you're in a content and big
- 1:06:21Speaker 5: go and you know the Patriots would really or any
- 1:06:24Speaker 5: team would really have to make it worth the Eagles.
- 1:06:26Speaker 5: Why I will say this, listening to what Sirianni and
- 1:06:32Speaker 5: Howie Roseman said yesterday, I mean, Siriani said, I can't
- 1:06:36Speaker 5: guarantee that he's going to be on the Eagles in
- 1:06:38Speaker 5: twenty six. Like that, you know, that's eye opening. They
- 1:06:41Speaker 5: hardly closed the door. Rabel was kind of gushing over
- 1:06:45Speaker 5: him today. If he gets moved, I absolutely think Patriots,
- 1:06:49Speaker 5: that's true. But like, if he gets moved, I absolutely
- 1:06:52Speaker 5: think the Patriots should be squarely in the conversation. If
- 1:06:54Speaker 5: not the favorites. It's you know, whether or not the
- 1:06:57Speaker 5: Eagles move him that I feel a lot less confident.
- 1:07:00Speaker 5: I don't think it's impossible.
- 1:07:02Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:07:02Speaker 5: If I just say, sitting here today, thirty five sixty five,
- 1:07:08Speaker 5: he gets traded thirty five sixty five, forty sixty somewhere
- 1:07:11Speaker 5: in there, like it wouldn't surprise me.
- 1:07:12Speaker 4: But I don't think it's the most likely outcome. That's
- 1:07:16Speaker 4: just me. There's no inside that's just me thinking.
- 1:07:19Speaker 3: Yeah, So I think the first thing with aj Brown
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: is obviously the contract that you were just talking about
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: in terms of the of the money left on the
- 1:07:25Speaker 3: contract and the dead money in a trade, they would
- 1:07:28Speaker 3: have to trade him after June first, like they're Otherwise
- 1:07:32Speaker 3: they're gonna be carrying million dollars a month half charge
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: even then it's like twenty it's like I think it's
- 1:07:38Speaker 3: like eighteen or twenty or so, it's like half of
- 1:07:40Speaker 3: what it is because you're you're gonna they'd be able
- 1:07:42Speaker 3: to break it up over two seasons, right, you'd be
- 1:07:45Speaker 3: able to account for it on two seasons of the
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: cab versus it all eating at once. Now some teams,
- 1:07:51Speaker 3: I believe the Denver Broncos took it all at once
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: with Russell Wilson.
- 1:07:56Speaker 4: They try to bury that, have it.
- 1:07:58Speaker 3: Yeah, let's just have it ruin our cat for this year,
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: and then you know, we're resetting, we're rebuilding anyways, and
- 1:08:04Speaker 3: then we'll we'll be off the books, you know, moving forward.
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: But they were rebuilding, they were going into a reset,
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: whereas the Eagles are not going to be doing that.
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: So as much as the Eagles spend more than any
- 1:08:16Speaker 3: team in the league. I don't know if they want
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: to spend on their good players playing for other teams.
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: Like that doesn't seem like a Howie Roseman type of move. Now,
- 1:08:25Speaker 3: the X factor though in all of this, is of
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: course a J. Brown. Like if A J. Brown says
- 1:08:29Speaker 3: he doesn't want to be an Eagle, you know, and
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: we go down that whole road, like, then that's something
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: that the Eagles in their cap and all that can't control. Well,
- 1:08:37Speaker 3: the player doesn't want to be there.
- 1:08:39Speaker 4: Brenton, I want to be the Niners. Last year.
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: We didn't, you know. But but right what his issue
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: was his his own his contract and his money.
- 1:08:52Speaker 4: Though sign a new deal. And then he signed a
- 1:08:56Speaker 4: new deal after all that.
- 1:08:57Speaker 5: Okay, I you're not It's not a perfect comp We've
- 1:09:02Speaker 5: seen teams. Trey Hendrickson would be another example. We've seen
- 1:09:05Speaker 5: some players very vocally want out and still not get moved.
- 1:09:08Speaker 4: Like teams aren't really caving on trade requests as.
- 1:09:11Speaker 5: Regularly as they used to. It doesn't mean they don't
- 1:09:13Speaker 5: do it or they won't do it. But I feel
- 1:09:15Speaker 5: like this is a little bit of a trade we've
- 1:09:16Speaker 5: seen the last few years.
- 1:09:19Speaker 3: Sure, I just wonder what DJ Brown. He's already been
- 1:09:21Speaker 3: kind of a grumpy let's call it, you know in
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: Philadelphia as it is, uh, and maybe they it just
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: is time for that relationship to split. But other than that,
- 1:09:32Speaker 3: I don't you know cap wise where they are in
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: their in their window just in terms of competing for
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: championships and things like that, it just doesn't make a
- 1:09:41Speaker 3: whole lot of sense that that would be something that
- 1:09:43Speaker 3: they would do. Now, if you're the Patriots, you're absolutely interested,
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: Like what's the offer? Look like? I think is another
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: interesting conversation we could have. Like one of the things
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: that I thought of is, you know, with the Eagles
- 1:09:56Speaker 3: in a trade, you know, obviously you're gonna have draft
- 1:09:59Speaker 3: compensation in there, But would they be interested in one
- 1:10:02Speaker 3: of the Patriots receivers?
- 1:10:04Speaker 4: I would think so, yeah, to get something like that done.
- 1:10:07Speaker 3: If they right, if they could, if they're trading AJ Brown,
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: And again I'm not trying to drive this sky to
- 1:10:12Speaker 3: the airport or anything, but if they're trading AJ Brown,
- 1:10:15Speaker 3: then they need somebody to play AJ Brown's role. So
- 1:10:20Speaker 3: would Kishon Booty be.
- 1:10:21Speaker 5: Somebody in the reality is, if you get a Brown here,
- 1:10:23Speaker 5: what IS's role here?
- 1:10:26Speaker 3: Right? So maybe that way there the Eagles still have
- 1:10:30Speaker 3: an outside receiver X receiver that can play, as we saw,
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: on a good team and play well and have moments
- 1:10:37Speaker 3: in playoff games and things like that. The Patriots get
- 1:10:40Speaker 3: a little bit more of a ceiling, you know, a
- 1:10:42Speaker 3: little bit more star power at that position. You know,
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: maybe that makes it so the Patriots don't have to
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: go crazy with draft capital and and throw, you know,
- 1:10:52Speaker 3: a bunch of picks at the Eagles. For AJ Brown,
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: you know, when he went from Tennessee to Philly, it
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: was what a first and the third right for a J. Brown?
- 1:11:01Speaker 3: That was four years ago now, so like his markets
- 1:11:07Speaker 3: definitely shifted, so I have to imagine it's gonna be
- 1:11:10Speaker 3: a little bit less than that. So, uh, you know,
- 1:11:13Speaker 3: does that sort of thing, you know, help the Patriots
- 1:11:17Speaker 3: kind of bridge a gap if they do end up
- 1:11:19Speaker 3: shopping a J. Brown who knows the other name, and
- 1:11:22Speaker 3: you kind of you mentioned him earlier. We had Reese
- 1:11:24Speaker 3: on today, and when Reese talks about things, he swore
- 1:11:30Speaker 3: that this was purely him him just throwing something out
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: there and not informed. But I always rip him about
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: about that because Mike Reas does not say things that
- 1:11:39Speaker 3: are that are all informed too often. So the name
- 1:11:43Speaker 3: he threw out there was Brian Thomas Jr. With Jacksonville.
- 1:11:47Speaker 3: And the one thing that I hesitate with that Now,
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: Parker Washington's turned into a great player for Jacksonville. So
- 1:11:54Speaker 3: they have Parker Washington. Travis Hunter is supposed to be
- 1:11:59Speaker 3: playing corner now, right.
- 1:12:01Speaker 4: That's what they're saying.
- 1:12:02Speaker 5: I might play a little bit of wide receiver here
- 1:12:04Speaker 5: and there, but that's it.
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: Right, So he's going to be, you know, for all
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: intents and purposes, he's going to be a full time
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: corner now. Yeah, So you know, Jacksonville moving Brian Thomas Junior.
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: I just don't see it, but that's you know, Mike
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: Reese brought it up. I saw it being talked about
- 1:12:21Speaker 3: it a little bit on ESPN. I think it was
- 1:12:23Speaker 3: Dan Graziano talking about it. So like, clearly that name
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: is being floated around the combine in terms of somebody
- 1:12:29Speaker 3: that might be able to that might shake free and
- 1:12:32Speaker 3: might be traded.
- 1:12:34Speaker 4: He's gonna cost you at least thirty first pick.
- 1:12:36Speaker 3: I would think, yeah, And we talked about brazl right,
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: and and you mentioned that it's a comp you know,
- 1:12:41Speaker 3: Brian Thomas junior. I think Brian Thomas Junior is a
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: Drake May kind of receiver. Yeah, guy, that's a vertical
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: field stretching receiver, you know, with some size that that's
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: exactly the type of player. I don't know. Would you
- 1:12:54Speaker 3: be interested in giving up for him? I don't know.
- 1:12:57Speaker 3: I always hate playing this game because I.
- 1:12:59Speaker 5: Mean not mult like I wouldn't do a first and
- 1:13:01Speaker 5: a second. I wouldn't do a first in the future first.
- 1:13:03Speaker 5: But if it's like a first, I don't know, like first,
- 1:13:06Speaker 5: third and player, I'd probably do that. Yeah, all right, Wait,
- 1:13:11Speaker 5: speaking of Chris Brasel while we're on that. Yes, Eldred
- 1:13:15Speaker 5: has called in.
- 1:13:18Speaker 4: Carolina. Hey, whatever, what do you got?
- 1:13:21Speaker 14: Hey man, I've been listening to what y'all said about A. J.
- 1:13:24Speaker 7: Brown, But.
- 1:13:26Speaker 15: This morning, the day's talking is possible because.
- 1:13:31Speaker 14: Of the toxic to him and Jalen Hurt and Sriana,
- 1:13:35Speaker 14: you know, for years, and if I wanted we become
- 1:13:38Speaker 14: New England would be a camp in the locker room.
- 1:13:41Speaker 9: I don't think, so to see how we wanted to
- 1:13:44Speaker 9: be a Patriot. And the coach was this coach before,
- 1:13:49Speaker 9: so I say, great, would have him have him locked in?
- 1:13:52Speaker 9: They'd be that gown outside with me, and uh, they
- 1:13:56Speaker 9: probably do it with the the sixteen point nine I
- 1:13:59Speaker 9: munion is in on the caps. So that's that's a
- 1:14:04Speaker 9: doable trade. And I would do it.
- 1:14:06Speaker 14: But brother, yeah, you're right.
- 1:14:08Speaker 3: Uh, I do want.
- 1:14:09Speaker 15: Him, But but you're gonna get them both him and
- 1:14:13Speaker 15: a J. You ain't gonna get them both.
- 1:14:16Speaker 14: But you know I don't do.
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: That, Aldred, I I apologize for You're.
- 1:14:22Speaker 15: Right, like like he keeps saying, and he do a
- 1:14:25Speaker 15: lot of why if you look at his production, he third,
- 1:14:29Speaker 15: he's third in long long distance, long yards and stuff
- 1:14:33Speaker 15: and touchdown and he also nice when he comes with
- 1:14:36Speaker 15: catches and yards in the in the college.
- 1:14:40Speaker 3: Yeah. So like I said that, he doesn't have a
- 1:14:44Speaker 3: diverse routree, but you were you were right about him, Aldred.
- 1:14:47Speaker 3: I'll give you your props. Yeah, that that was that
- 1:14:51Speaker 3: was a good pick.
- 1:14:55Speaker 15: All right, Thanks man, you have a good way.
- 1:14:57Speaker 13: All right.
- 1:14:57Speaker 4: Thanks Al you go back to aj Brown thing too.
- 1:15:00Speaker 4: I'm with it. And I said this about Diggs last year.
- 1:15:03Speaker 5: Yeah, Okay, if he doesn't get eight to ten targets
- 1:15:05Speaker 5: a game, he's gonna be annoyed. Fine, he should probably
- 1:15:08Speaker 5: be getting that if he's here, like if AJ Brown's here,
- 1:15:12Speaker 5: And I think at least some of the report I
- 1:15:14Speaker 5: haven't read every single thing that's been, you know, put
- 1:15:17Speaker 5: out there about it, but some of the reporting was
- 1:15:19Speaker 5: that it wasn't necessarily the volume as much as it
- 1:15:22Speaker 5: was the kind of targets, Like he wanted to be
- 1:15:24Speaker 5: targeted more deep, Right, it's not any to ten to
- 1:15:26Speaker 5: twelve targets a game.
- 1:15:27Speaker 4: He wanted more deep balls. Everything was underneath.
- 1:15:29Speaker 5: Yeah, Okay, fine, if it upsets him that he's only
- 1:15:32Speaker 5: getting targeted short, that shouldn't be the case if he's here.
- 1:15:37Speaker 5: If he's here, drink may is gonna be throwing him
- 1:15:39Speaker 5: goes and posts like so, I'm not.
- 1:15:41Speaker 4: Worried about that offense was just right.
- 1:15:44Speaker 3: Yeah, that offense was just broken, Like and I think that,
- 1:15:47Speaker 3: you know, the volume has something to do with it,
- 1:15:49Speaker 3: because it's just how high their rush volume is, Like
- 1:15:52Speaker 3: they run the ball so much that there's only one
- 1:15:55Speaker 3: ball to go around. And if they're running the ball
- 1:15:57Speaker 3: as much as Philly likes to run the ball, Now
- 1:15:59Speaker 3: you DeVante Smith, Dallas Godter, A J. Brown, like you're
- 1:16:03Speaker 3: talking about let's just say you're talking twenty five pass
- 1:16:06Speaker 3: attempts a game, like, there's just not gonna be enough
- 1:16:10Speaker 3: exact predator round.
- 1:16:11Speaker 5: Now, if you want to tell me, AJ Brown is
- 1:16:12Speaker 5: gonna be a J Brown is a problem. And you
- 1:16:15Speaker 5: know it's a problem that he's upset that he's only
- 1:16:17Speaker 5: getting three or four targets a game. Okay, if he's
- 1:16:20Speaker 5: only getting three or four targets a game here, that's
- 1:16:23Speaker 5: an issue with the way their offense is built and
- 1:16:25Speaker 5: their personnel is built, and Drake May's approach, like, I'm
- 1:16:28Speaker 5: not worried about that being's that can be a problem
- 1:16:30Speaker 5: in Philly. I don't think that's gonna be a problem here.
- 1:16:32Speaker 5: I don't think a lot of targets for a J.
- 1:16:34Speaker 5: Brown would be a problem here. Let's go to Patty
- 1:16:38Speaker 5: and Aguan Patty, what's.
- 1:16:40Speaker 7: Up Evan Alex As the Great Michael Holly would say
- 1:16:44Speaker 7: when he was on the radio, my people from another steeple,
- 1:16:48Speaker 7: I got a few things I wanted to go over
- 1:16:50Speaker 7: yesterday when I uh, I watched all Elliott's press conferences,
- 1:16:54Speaker 7: all of this pressers to sit downs and everything, and
- 1:16:57Speaker 7: I kind of put him the same opinion after watching
- 1:16:59Speaker 7: them that the darted yesterday, which is, I don't think
- 1:17:03Speaker 7: you're you know they're not gonna go crazy spending obviously,
- 1:17:05Speaker 7: but I would be I wouldn't be surprised if you see, like,
- 1:17:09Speaker 7: maybe them sign a couple of big names, the two
- 1:17:13Speaker 7: guys I'm thinking of, or possibly three guys obviously David Edwards.
- 1:17:18Speaker 7: I would love Jalen Phillips to be on this team.
- 1:17:22Speaker 7: And I think, like, you know, like you guys are
- 1:17:24Speaker 7: talking about playing for a contender plane for Rabel playing
- 1:17:27Speaker 7: on a team that just made it to the super Bowl.
- 1:17:29Speaker 7: I'm not saying he would take a discount, but I
- 1:17:31Speaker 7: don't think he's gonna you know, he's had injury issues,
- 1:17:34Speaker 7: maybe he doesn't command that much money and the other
- 1:17:37Speaker 7: guy is likely. Now I got a couple more things.
- 1:17:39Speaker 7: I'll try and make him quick. But uh I had
- 1:17:42Speaker 7: this crazy thought in my head too regarding Will Campbell
- 1:17:46Speaker 7: playing left tackle, Like if I was, I was thinking, like,
- 1:17:50Speaker 7: if they go out and sign like Antonio to me,
- 1:17:53Speaker 7: that would like, hey, all right, we're gonna give you
- 1:17:56Speaker 7: like one or two years kind of uh see, if
- 1:17:58Speaker 7: you take that next steps, if you clean up some
- 1:18:01Speaker 7: of the bad techniques that everyone says you were playing with,
- 1:18:05Speaker 7: if they sound a guy like David Edwards I think
- 1:18:07Speaker 7: that that pretty much stamps him in as the left
- 1:18:09Speaker 7: tackle for the next four or five years, and I
- 1:18:12Speaker 7: wanted to get your guys thoughts on that. Alex, I
- 1:18:15Speaker 7: think you have to Sodo two positions this year definitely, Okay,
- 1:18:19Speaker 7: edge and edge and tight end and Evan. I'm going
- 1:18:23Speaker 7: to keep pounding the table for this guy. I do
- 1:18:25Speaker 7: like Chris Brazil a lot, but I'm going to keep
- 1:18:28Speaker 7: pounding the table. I want you to watch some film
- 1:18:31Speaker 7: on Skyler Bell because that's that. You know, Chris Bell
- 1:18:34Speaker 7: was my draft crush and then he tore his ACL
- 1:18:36Speaker 7: and I kind of I'm kind of all set, but
- 1:18:39Speaker 7: I'm telling you Skyler Bell Yukon vocal kid. That's got
- 1:18:43Speaker 7: nothing to do with him playing for Yukon. He's a
- 1:18:45Speaker 7: damn good player. Check him out. That's all I got.
- 1:18:49Speaker 7: Talk to you guys next week.
- 1:18:51Speaker 4: Thanks Patty.
- 1:18:52Speaker 5: I want to go back to what he said about
- 1:18:53Speaker 5: the free agents because it's a good point. Like to me,
- 1:18:56Speaker 5: it's I don't know SODO counts if you resigned somebody.
- 1:19:00Speaker 4: I don't think it does. You know that that applies.
- 1:19:02Speaker 5: To additions for those who are not longtime listeners in
- 1:19:05Speaker 5: the program. It means sign one draft one, adding two players,
- 1:19:09Speaker 5: one veteran one one rookie in the off season in
- 1:19:11Speaker 5: a single position. You know, to me, it's can they
- 1:19:16Speaker 5: sign like one or two really two starters, ideally a
- 1:19:21Speaker 5: left guard, and then either a linebacker or a safety
- 1:19:23Speaker 5: of Hawkins leaves. You know, I'd put aj Brown in there,
- 1:19:26Speaker 5: I guess, and then like either re sign Chase On
- 1:19:30Speaker 5: or sign an edge. If they re signed Chase On
- 1:19:33Speaker 5: and then draft somebody, I would say that would be enough.
- 1:19:36Speaker 5: If they don't re sign Chase On, then yeah, you
- 1:19:39Speaker 5: probably need to sign one draft one. I came up
- 1:19:42Speaker 5: with the term, so I guess I can decide whether
- 1:19:44Speaker 5: or not that counts to me.
- 1:19:45Speaker 4: It applies to additions. You coined it, so yeah I did.
- 1:19:48Speaker 5: So I'm not there yet with edge tight end, Yeah yeah,
- 1:19:54Speaker 5: probably I don't know that.
- 1:19:55Speaker 4: Yeah, you could probably so to that because I guess.
- 1:19:58Speaker 3: I am a I have a take on the tight ends.
- 1:20:01Speaker 3: I'll get to in a second. But I was I
- 1:20:04Speaker 3: was thinking a little soda with with edge rusher. But
- 1:20:07Speaker 3: if you're gonna tell me that that Chase On doesn't count,
- 1:20:11Speaker 3: I'll let I'll give that to you. Since you you
- 1:20:14Speaker 3: coined the phrase Uh, but I say it counts. I mean,
- 1:20:17Speaker 3: you did your sign.
- 1:20:19Speaker 5: But I think it applied. It implies additions, it implies building. Yeah, like,
- 1:20:26Speaker 5: for instance, because like Jalen hawkeets, safety would be the
- 1:20:31Speaker 5: same thing. If they bring back Jalen Hawks, you can
- 1:20:33Speaker 5: just draft somebody if they lose Jalen Hacket.
- 1:20:35Speaker 4: Yeah, soda.
- 1:20:36Speaker 3: So it's I I right, So I guess I guess
- 1:20:39Speaker 3: with safety. My the difference to me is like if
- 1:20:41Speaker 3: they sign, if they bring back Jalen Hawkins, then I'm
- 1:20:45Speaker 3: not using a top one hundred pick on a safety.
- 1:20:48Speaker 3: I still like that that.
- 1:20:49Speaker 4: I still might not the first round pick, but I
- 1:20:51Speaker 4: still data.
- 1:20:53Speaker 3: I don't think I need to.
- 1:20:54Speaker 4: But what do they feel like they planned for?
- 1:20:59Speaker 3: I I'd have to. It'd have to be like somebody
- 1:21:01Speaker 3: that you know they feel like is gonna be an
- 1:21:04Speaker 3: impact starter. And then if you but if you like
- 1:21:11Speaker 3: feel like you know, for example, if you feel like
- 1:21:14Speaker 3: Dynamon or McNeil Warren is a guy that can be
- 1:21:17Speaker 3: an impact, you know, big time impact player, Like you're
- 1:21:21Speaker 3: gonna draft McNeil Warren and he's gonna have the same
- 1:21:23Speaker 3: impact as you're on your defense, and nick Ammon Warrey
- 1:21:25Speaker 3: had on Seattle right like that, then okay, but if
- 1:21:30Speaker 3: you're just drafting him so that hopefully he's you know,
- 1:21:32Speaker 3: a solid contributor, then like I don't know at edge Rusher,
- 1:21:37Speaker 3: even if you bring back Chase On, like, we don't know.
- 1:21:40Speaker 3: You know, Elliot Wolf said yesterday that he's he's gonna
- 1:21:43Speaker 3: at least come back to you know, in twenty twenty
- 1:21:45Speaker 3: six for camp. I honestly am not ready to say
- 1:21:48Speaker 3: that Harold Andry is gonna make it through camp on
- 1:21:50Speaker 3: the Patriots roster, but he's at least in the mix, right, Yeah,
- 1:21:55Speaker 3: But like who's playing that edge spot oppositely Chase On
- 1:21:59Speaker 3: long term?
- 1:22:00Speaker 4: No, it's it's fair.
- 1:22:03Speaker 3: So like to me, it's like I think they need
- 1:22:05Speaker 3: to sign one draft one at edge Rusher because I
- 1:22:08Speaker 3: think they need two starters now maybe Chase On is
- 1:22:11Speaker 3: one of them.
- 1:22:12Speaker 5: So that's what SODO means soda usually, And that's that's why,
- 1:22:16Speaker 5: because remember it came out of they had no tackles
- 1:22:20Speaker 5: and you didn't want to draft you want to have
- 1:22:22Speaker 5: two rookie tackles and you weren't going to get two
- 1:22:26Speaker 5: starting tackles and free agency because that's unrealistic. So that's
- 1:22:28Speaker 5: that's what it's born out of. So that's why I like,
- 1:22:31Speaker 5: I don't how about this.
- 1:22:33Speaker 4: Here's a compromise.
- 1:22:35Speaker 5: Because Calebon Chason is not technically a free agent until
- 1:22:39Speaker 5: is it the eleventh ninth, March March nine, the tampering
- 1:22:44Speaker 5: window on March ninth. If Chason's not re signed, it
- 1:22:49Speaker 5: becomes sodo.
- 1:22:52Speaker 4: Okay, I think that's.
- 1:22:53Speaker 3: All right because you can hit the open market and
- 1:22:55Speaker 3: you're competing for him, and YadA, YadA, YadA.
- 1:22:57Speaker 6: Yah.
- 1:22:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I just think i'd edge rusher. It's such a
- 1:22:59Speaker 3: great class. And then you're still thinking about, Okay, you
- 1:23:03Speaker 3: probably need two long term you know, you need two
- 1:23:06Speaker 3: starters on book ends, you know, on opposite end. So like,
- 1:23:10Speaker 3: I think you need to take that approach, and it's
- 1:23:12Speaker 3: a good free agency class. It's a good draft for
- 1:23:15Speaker 3: edge rushers. Let's say, you know, why not, Let's say
- 1:23:18Speaker 3: they bring back Chase On should they still sign one
- 1:23:22Speaker 3: draft one on the edge, and the draft one, by
- 1:23:26Speaker 3: the way, applies to like top one hundred, Like, yeah,
- 1:23:28Speaker 3: you take guy in who seventh round doesn't count.
- 1:23:30Speaker 4: We're talking about.
- 1:23:31Speaker 5: Guys are gonna play right away. Does that be a
- 1:23:32Speaker 5: first round top one hundred, top one fifty. Even if
- 1:23:35Speaker 5: they bring back Chase on Evan, should they still sign
- 1:23:38Speaker 5: one draft one on the edge.
- 1:23:40Speaker 3: I think so, because, like I just said, like Landry,
- 1:23:43Speaker 3: I don't know what Landry's future looks like. I think
- 1:23:47Speaker 3: he's sticking around right now because of the contract. Frankly, yeah,
- 1:23:51Speaker 3: you know, like, I don't think they really can move
- 1:23:54Speaker 3: off of him right now. Anthony Jennings, I think, to
- 1:23:57Speaker 3: his credit, really played very well and kind of carved
- 1:24:01Speaker 3: out a role for himself that they didn't really think existed.
- 1:24:05Speaker 3: Frank you know, in training camp last year, he was
- 1:24:07Speaker 3: not really getting a lot of those He had to
- 1:24:09Speaker 3: earn his roster spot. Yeah right, I mean he just
- 1:24:12Speaker 3: had to flat out earn the roster spot. I like
- 1:24:14Speaker 3: what I saw from Elijah Ponder, Like, I think there's
- 1:24:16Speaker 3: flashes there, But is he a starter in this league
- 1:24:19Speaker 3: that's gonna play eighty eighty five percent of the snaps?
- 1:24:23Speaker 3: I think that's asking a lot out of an undrafted
- 1:24:25Speaker 3: free agent signing for that to pan out that way.
- 1:24:28Speaker 3: So I think that you're looking for a long term
- 1:24:32Speaker 3: uh you know, probably you know, left defensive end on
- 1:24:34Speaker 3: the know, over the right side of the offensive line.
- 1:24:37Speaker 3: That's gonna you know, be the opposite side of Chase
- 1:24:41Speaker 3: On for the next three or four years, and that
- 1:24:43Speaker 3: I think in this edge class, like you probably can
- 1:24:46Speaker 3: get one maybe all the way through the third round,
- 1:24:49Speaker 3: you know. So I think that's exactly where they are
- 1:24:53Speaker 3: at that spot.
- 1:24:53Speaker 5: Yeah, that that's sort of me Like, I don't know
- 1:24:57Speaker 5: if they bring back Chase On, right, I don't know
- 1:25:00Speaker 5: that you got to go out and pay like a
- 1:25:01Speaker 5: dafe Away or boy mafe right, pay one of these
- 1:25:04Speaker 5: guys big money.
- 1:25:06Speaker 3: No, but.
- 1:25:08Speaker 5: You know, in terms of the Soto thing, there are
- 1:25:12Speaker 5: some and we texted about this. I know you hate
- 1:25:14Speaker 5: this take, but I'm gonna give it anyway. There's some
- 1:25:18Speaker 5: like older veterans that are out there that are not
- 1:25:21Speaker 5: nearly what they were and say that, you know, just
- 1:25:25Speaker 5: to pin their ears back a third down and go
- 1:25:28Speaker 5: it's Joe So Joey Bosa, Khalil Mack and Jadavian Clown.
- 1:25:31Speaker 5: Let's say let's say they bring back calevon Chase On,
- 1:25:34Speaker 5: and they know they're.
- 1:25:35Speaker 3: Going to draft the edge guy with one of their
- 1:25:37Speaker 3: first run defender in the NFL than Joe.
- 1:25:39Speaker 5: Okay, So I'm saying, like, then Khalil Mack, then Khalil
- 1:25:43Speaker 5: Mack or Jadavion Clowny pick one. I would throw Cameron
- 1:25:46Speaker 5: Jordan in there too, but I would imagine he's either
- 1:25:48Speaker 5: going back to the Saints or retiring. Like throw Von
- 1:25:52Speaker 5: Miller in there, out, throw Von Miller in there, Like,
- 1:25:54Speaker 5: oh my god, would you give one of these guys
- 1:25:57Speaker 5: like a one year, ten million dollar deal and just
- 1:26:00Speaker 5: say we're gonna put you on the field and third downs,
- 1:26:01Speaker 5: go get the quarterback. If you have chased on back
- 1:26:04Speaker 5: and you know you're drafting somebody high or with some
- 1:26:06Speaker 5: of these guys, they may not sign till after the draft,
- 1:26:08Speaker 5: you may not even have to decide on that un
- 1:26:10Speaker 5: till later.
- 1:26:12Speaker 3: Okay. I guess my my biggest pushback on this, and
- 1:26:14Speaker 3: I'm sorry I shouldn't have said that about Joey Bosa.
- 1:26:16Speaker 3: That was rude, But my biggest pushback on this. Okay,
- 1:26:19Speaker 3: this guys, let me be clear. This guy's not coming
- 1:26:21Speaker 3: in and playing eighty percent of the snaps. We're talking
- 1:26:23Speaker 3: about like thirty percent, I third and fifteen. Go do
- 1:26:27Speaker 3: the one thing that you're known for. Okay, but here's
- 1:26:31Speaker 3: my pushback. Yeah, if he if he gets healthy, which
- 1:26:35Speaker 3: is the same thing with Bosa, Matt Like, all these
- 1:26:38Speaker 3: guys are thirty plus years old. They're gonna have to
- 1:26:40Speaker 3: stay healthy, right, right, So can Harold l Andry just
- 1:26:44Speaker 3: do that? And then you already have that guy? Yes,
- 1:26:46Speaker 3: yet like the older veteran pass rusher like Joey Bosa,
- 1:26:51Speaker 3: Harold Landry, like they're kind of just in the same ilk.
- 1:26:55Speaker 3: Whereas like when I look at this free agency class
- 1:26:57Speaker 3: and look guys like Away and Mo Bowie, my off A.
- 1:27:00Speaker 3: Those guys are gonna get paid, right, They're gonna get
- 1:27:02Speaker 3: paid a lot of money. But there's some guys that
- 1:27:05Speaker 3: are like, maybe there's more to it, Like a guy
- 1:27:08Speaker 3: that I really like that I think they might as
- 1:27:11Speaker 3: Arnold Abikite, that name, I know Itbicetti from Atlanta, right,
- 1:27:17Speaker 3: I played it with the Falcons, drafted by the Falcons,
- 1:27:20Speaker 3: didn't really necessarily hit, but I think he's got sort
- 1:27:24Speaker 3: of that pastor a skill set. I remember watching him
- 1:27:27Speaker 3: for the draft, you know, a couple of years ago,
- 1:27:30Speaker 3: like that that's their type of guy, Like could that
- 1:27:33Speaker 3: type of guy with the change of scenery and a
- 1:27:35Speaker 3: better system fit and all that kind of stuff. But
- 1:27:38Speaker 3: they just did this with I.
- 1:27:38Speaker 5: Was gonna say, they say, you're literally just talking about
- 1:27:40Speaker 5: finding the next kale Cha, which I'm all for.
- 1:27:43Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, like I'd much rather just do that than
- 1:27:47Speaker 3: going and like you know, buy like a thirty four
- 1:27:50Speaker 3: year old head rusher. Fair enough, Wait thought, that's all
- 1:27:54Speaker 3: just the thought. I I know you like that you
- 1:27:57Speaker 3: liked the force fumbles with Jordan.
- 1:27:59Speaker 4: I want we talked.
- 1:28:00Speaker 5: I want guys on the defense that force turnovers like
- 1:28:02Speaker 5: they're really good preventative defense. They need they now need
- 1:28:06Speaker 5: guys that make plays and veterans tend to be better
- 1:28:10Speaker 5: at that. It's not I know you're making about Bosa.
- 1:28:12Speaker 5: That's the guy texting you about It could be any
- 1:28:14Speaker 5: of those guys.
- 1:28:15Speaker 3: Because I'm teasing you, I know, uh say to have more.
- 1:28:20Speaker 4: Causes, you grab one more call? Yeah, why did you
- 1:28:22Speaker 4: have a thought?
- 1:28:23Speaker 3: Yeah? Go ahead now I had I wanted to talk
- 1:28:25Speaker 3: about the tight ends.
- 1:28:26Speaker 5: But okay, we have emails too that I was going
- 1:28:28Speaker 5: to use that to go to the tight ends. But first,
- 1:28:30Speaker 5: Derek in South Carolina, Derek, Hey, guys.
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: So I just want to ask about the I have
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: a question about the draft.
- 1:28:38Speaker 4: Yep.
- 1:28:40Speaker 2: So do you think the Patriots are in a position
- 1:28:42Speaker 2: when if they stan Pad at thirty one and they
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: don't make any big cree agent spies. Do you think
- 1:28:50Speaker 2: that they are in a position where they can take
- 1:28:52Speaker 2: ast available relative to at least some sort of positional need.
- 1:29:00Speaker 5: If they don't make any free agent signings, can they
- 1:29:02Speaker 5: just take the best available player thirty one? I mean,
- 1:29:06Speaker 5: there'd be an argument that they need to guard if
- 1:29:08Speaker 5: if they plan on moving Jared Wilson back in the center,
- 1:29:11Speaker 5: they would need to start and guard. But you could
- 1:29:12Speaker 5: get that guy later. Kind of, It's weird kind of
- 1:29:16Speaker 5: the way the board falls. The best player available is
- 1:29:20Speaker 5: probably going to be a position to need for them
- 1:29:22Speaker 5: most of the back end of the first round edge rushers,
- 1:29:26Speaker 5: receivers and defensive Yeah.
- 1:29:30Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:29:30Speaker 2: So free agency is it going to be like, okay,
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: so we're gonna maybe for a tight end too, right yeah,
- 1:29:41Speaker 2: not really a howl out there for a blocking type
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: of tight end, right, like, uh, Lively receivers got franchised.
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: Do they try and pry away Meyer from Raiders or
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: comment from the from Chicago?
- 1:30:00Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean I like those guys. You know, Charlie
- 1:30:03Speaker 5: Kohler is a free agent, Kate Aughten's a free agent.
- 1:30:05Speaker 5: Those guys can block. You don't have to give up
- 1:30:07Speaker 5: a draft pick. You know, they could try to make
- 1:30:10Speaker 5: a trade, but I think they could also get some
- 1:30:12Speaker 5: of those guys in free agency.
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: And heaven, you made a great point two weeks ago.
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: You said we didn't lose Super Bowl because of defense,
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: which I agree with completely. So I'd love to see
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: us make a move.
- 1:30:23Speaker 5: For a J.
- 1:30:24Speaker 3: Brown.
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: But the thing I've heard about him is how bad
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: that contract is in all the tech cap space, so
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: I'm not sure how that would work out. Thanks, guys,
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: I really appreciate it.
- 1:30:34Speaker 4: Thanks Derek.
- 1:30:34Speaker 5: So the contracts pass, the team taking a J. Brown
- 1:30:38Speaker 5: on I think actually gets something like a bargain at
- 1:30:40Speaker 5: least for a first.
- 1:30:41Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, right, the contract is the Eagles problem, right,
- 1:30:45Speaker 3: you know whatever. But the thing that he said about
- 1:30:47Speaker 3: the best player available and then we can talk about
- 1:30:49Speaker 3: the tight ends, I thought that the best player available.
- 1:30:52Speaker 3: Thing I was actually thinking about this earlier, Alex is
- 1:30:54Speaker 3: that the last two drafts they've been like really locked
- 1:30:58Speaker 3: into the position that they are gonna be. Like they
- 1:31:02Speaker 3: needed to take a quarterback and Drake May's draft, and
- 1:31:04Speaker 3: they needed to take a tackle in Will Campbell's draft,
- 1:31:06Speaker 3: and there was really no wiggle room there, like there.
- 1:31:09Speaker 3: That's just kind of how they were set up. So
- 1:31:11Speaker 3: even though they're picking thirty one and that's obviously very
- 1:31:13Speaker 3: very different just in general from where they were picking
- 1:31:17Speaker 3: those two drafts, this is the first draft in a
- 1:31:19Speaker 3: little while where they don't have like a glaring, obvious
- 1:31:22Speaker 3: need that they're locked into a position right well now,
- 1:31:25Speaker 3: that could change in free agency, like if they if
- 1:31:28Speaker 3: Hawkins and Chase on and like they both walk, let's say, yeah,
- 1:31:31Speaker 3: you know, and they don't go out and replace those guys,
- 1:31:34Speaker 3: then that might change. But as of right now, I
- 1:31:37Speaker 3: do think that they're now they're not going to take
- 1:31:39Speaker 3: When I say best player available, I do They're not
- 1:31:42Speaker 3: probably not going to take a running back right.
- 1:31:46Speaker 4: Sucks, But let's let's say it's c J.
- 1:31:49Speaker 3: Allen.
- 1:31:49Speaker 5: But just in general, the best player available could be
- 1:31:51Speaker 5: se You know how I feel about best player available.
- 1:31:53Speaker 5: I think it's a fallacy, you know, because and it's
- 1:31:57Speaker 5: actually not the case this year. If we're just gonna say, okay,
- 1:32:01Speaker 5: what's best player available, mean, rate them on a scale
- 1:32:03Speaker 5: of one to one hundred, how could they are at
- 1:32:05Speaker 5: their position? Best player available after about pick eight is
- 1:32:08Speaker 5: usually kicker. Well, okay, well it's not a valuable position.
- 1:32:12Speaker 5: All right, So now we're not doing best player available,
- 1:32:13Speaker 5: We're putting positional value to it. It's best player available,
- 1:32:17Speaker 5: you know, well, you know, okay, so then draft the
- 1:32:20Speaker 5: position you need.
- 1:32:20Speaker 4: Well, that's drafting for need.
- 1:32:21Speaker 5: That's not best player available, it's best player available for
- 1:32:24Speaker 5: the state of the football team. True best player available
- 1:32:27Speaker 5: as a fallacy, truly, just drafting for need. I go
- 1:32:31Speaker 5: back to is the cold strange pick. So, like, let's
- 1:32:35Speaker 5: say it's Cjlen.
- 1:32:36Speaker 3: I just think that that's where they were, right, Like,
- 1:32:38Speaker 3: that's where they were with Drake May, that's where they
- 1:32:40Speaker 3: were with Will Campbell, like they had to fix I.
- 1:32:42Speaker 5: Think there's also like we knowledged you know. Yeah, sorry continue, sorry.
- 1:32:48Speaker 3: Yeah, So I just think you want to bring up CJ. Allen,
- 1:32:51Speaker 3: Like you can make a case for that. Yeah, you know,
- 1:32:56Speaker 3: Robert Splaine's getting older, you know, could they upgrade Jack
- 1:32:59Speaker 3: give me and Christian Ellis and Jelani Tavai And now
- 1:33:03Speaker 3: for the short term, you have a really good linebacker
- 1:33:06Speaker 3: tandem with Splaine and CJ. Allen. For the long term,
- 1:33:09Speaker 3: maybe CJ. Allen is your your true mic and replacing
- 1:33:12Speaker 3: Robert Splaine, right, Like I mean It's not what I
- 1:33:16Speaker 3: would necessarily loved for them to do. But I don't
- 1:33:21Speaker 3: think that they're going to go into this draft because
- 1:33:23Speaker 3: of what they've done so far. They've been good at
- 1:33:25Speaker 3: you know, they've done new last offseason, they had a
- 1:33:28Speaker 3: good offseason. I don't really look at this roster right
- 1:33:32Speaker 3: now and say, you know, Cole strangers because they had
- 1:33:35Speaker 3: a glaring need at the guard, you know, and I
- 1:33:38Speaker 3: just don't see that on this team right now, and
- 1:33:40Speaker 3: barring you know, them losing everybody in free agency and
- 1:33:43Speaker 3: kind of having to you know, a hole at safety,
- 1:33:46Speaker 3: hole at edge rusher, you know, something like that.
- 1:33:48Speaker 5: I think the only position it would genuinely surprise me,
- 1:33:51Speaker 5: I mean beyond quarterback. But just like looking at you know,
- 1:33:53Speaker 5: to use the consensus board, twenty five to thirty five,
- 1:33:56Speaker 5: wide receiver, defensive lineman, tackle, linebacker, defensive lineman, edge, quarterback, safety, corner, corner,
- 1:34:03Speaker 5: defensive linemen. The only thing that like surprised me in
- 1:34:06Speaker 5: the first round is corner, Like that guy's not gonna play, yeah,
- 1:34:09Speaker 5: you know, and I do think they need a corner,
- 1:34:11Speaker 5: and I wouldn't hate taking developmental guy either late in
- 1:34:13Speaker 5: the top one hundred or early on Day three, develop
- 1:34:16Speaker 5: beyond Carlton Davis your first round pick, unless they're drafting
- 1:34:20Speaker 5: you know, Blake Freeling to develop on Morgan mos is
- 1:34:23Speaker 5: like your first round pick should.
- 1:34:24Speaker 4: Probably play corner.
- 1:34:26Speaker 5: Would be the only position that would spress me. All right,
- 1:34:28Speaker 5: you said you have a wide receiver, take a tight end.
- 1:34:30Speaker 5: Take We got a couple of ends.
- 1:34:32Speaker 3: Yes, so you want to sorry, go ahead?
- 1:34:34Speaker 4: So should I read these I'm emails first? You just
- 1:34:37Speaker 4: want to give it.
- 1:34:38Speaker 3: Let me get my take everyone. We'll see if the
- 1:34:40Speaker 3: you know, maybe the emails will kind of all right.
- 1:34:42Speaker 3: So here here, here's my thing on tight ends, because
- 1:34:44Speaker 3: I were getting ready to put out after the combine
- 1:34:48Speaker 3: all of our like free agency previews, yeah, and how
- 1:34:51Speaker 3: we'd written previews and how we do it. I take
- 1:34:54Speaker 3: the offense because you know, I'm more of an offense guy,
- 1:34:56Speaker 3: and duce takes the defense because Ducee is all about defense. Right,
- 1:35:00Speaker 3: we split up the sides of the ball. So I
- 1:35:02Speaker 3: just did my previews on offense and those will be
- 1:35:04Speaker 3: out next week. And I was writing about the tight ends,
- 1:35:08Speaker 3: and I have come to the conclusion because I've heard
- 1:35:10Speaker 3: a lot of hype and now maybe it's a little
- 1:35:13Speaker 3: less so because Kyle Pitts is now probably not going
- 1:35:15Speaker 3: to be on the market. But I've heard a lot
- 1:35:18Speaker 3: of hype about the tight end class in free agency,
- 1:35:22Speaker 3: and I got to tell you, Alix, like I'm not
- 1:35:24Speaker 3: crazy about it. I'm not crazy about it. And the
- 1:35:27Speaker 3: main reason why I'm not crazy about it is because
- 1:35:30Speaker 3: I don't think any of these dudes can block that.
- 1:35:33Speaker 3: And like you mentioned Cohler, who I think is probably
- 1:35:37Speaker 3: one of the best blocking tight ends in football, but
- 1:35:40Speaker 3: he doesn't really catch the ball right. So like you're
- 1:35:43Speaker 3: either again, you're in this category kind of like we
- 1:35:46Speaker 3: were talking about earlier where you don't have You either
- 1:35:49Speaker 3: have receivers like Kyle, like Isaiah Likely and Kyle Pitts
- 1:35:52Speaker 3: are wide receivers. I know they're listed as tight ends,
- 1:35:56Speaker 3: but they're they're tight ends masquerading about they're wide receivers
- 1:36:00Speaker 3: masquerading as tight ends. Like they're not tight ends.
- 1:36:03Speaker 4: What about k.
- 1:36:07Speaker 3: I I remembered Kateaen as a better blocker than maybe
- 1:36:11Speaker 3: I I once I dug into it, I don't think
- 1:36:15Speaker 3: that Kay Dowton is as good as of a blocker
- 1:36:17Speaker 3: as I initially thought. Uh, And he also maybe is
- 1:36:21Speaker 3: just the type of offense that they played in Tampa Bay,
- 1:36:24Speaker 3: but a lot of his snaps were flexed out, you know,
- 1:36:27Speaker 3: slot you know, type of snaps as well. So I
- 1:36:30Speaker 3: think that he's probably maybe a little bit more well rounded.
- 1:36:33Speaker 3: But I think he's more you know, Hunter Henry. So
- 1:36:37Speaker 3: what if you're looking to upgrade the inline blocking, isn't
- 1:36:40Speaker 3: it we're upgrading it from Hunter Henry, right Like? That's
- 1:36:43Speaker 3: so yeah, just replacing or adding Hunter Henry to Hunter Henry,
- 1:36:46Speaker 3: then you're just kind of doing the same thing.
- 1:36:48Speaker 5: What about Dylan in Nashville? David Joku not going back
- 1:36:52Speaker 5: to the Browns.
- 1:36:55Speaker 3: So I think that one has a little bit more
- 1:36:59Speaker 3: of what I'm looking for. Definitely a vertical player up
- 1:37:03Speaker 3: the field, right, which I like in the passing game,
- 1:37:05Speaker 3: may make a lot more inline experience because of what
- 1:37:08Speaker 3: they did in Cleveland and they run first offense yep, yep,
- 1:37:14Speaker 3: So that one I like a little bit now doesn't
- 1:37:16Speaker 3: check off the getting younger at the position, right, he's
- 1:37:22Speaker 3: little than Austin Hooper, but not he's not We're not resetting,
- 1:37:28Speaker 3: right like, we're not going with the draft picker. I
- 1:37:30Speaker 3: guess you could draft somebody still too, But you know what,
- 1:37:32Speaker 3: I'm trying to say, like still kind of on the
- 1:37:34Speaker 3: older side. You know. Then you have guys like Kohler,
- 1:37:38Speaker 3: who I think is one of the best blockers in
- 1:37:40Speaker 3: the league at the position, but doesn't really catch the ball.
- 1:37:43Speaker 3: David Bellinger from the Giants, I think is a solid blocker,
- 1:37:48Speaker 3: but he doesn't really Yeah, you know, Chicka Konkuo is
- 1:37:53Speaker 3: a really good like h back move tight end that
- 1:37:56Speaker 3: catches the ball and is a big passing game player,
- 1:37:59Speaker 3: but the block So it just look My big thing
- 1:38:04Speaker 3: I'll is is trying to upgrade the inline blocking, and
- 1:38:07Speaker 3: I just don't see it unless you're sacrificing, like you're
- 1:38:10Speaker 3: really signing a blocking titan, I'm with you, or drafting
- 1:38:14Speaker 3: a blocking tight end.
- 1:38:16Speaker 5: I'm with you. Like tight ends to do everything well,
- 1:38:18Speaker 5: aren't going to grow on trees. That's kind of a
- 1:38:21Speaker 5: whole point.
- 1:38:22Speaker 3: Can I don't even like you. I'm not asking them
- 1:38:24Speaker 3: to do everything well, I'm asking them to do.
- 1:38:27Speaker 5: I'm agreeing with you, like solidly. Everybody asks like it's
- 1:38:30Speaker 5: so easy to go get a well rounded tight end. Well, no,
- 1:38:31Speaker 5: the guys that can catch and block are generally more
- 1:38:35Speaker 5: valued because they can do multiple things. Dawn and Philly
- 1:38:38Speaker 5: ass would you trade up for Kenyon Sadik if he falls.
- 1:38:41Speaker 4: To the early twenties, which I don't think is going
- 1:38:42Speaker 4: to happen, but would you trade.
- 1:38:47Speaker 3: So, Like, I think Kenyan Sadik's blocking is underrated, Like
- 1:38:50Speaker 3: I think that he's getting kind of knocked for his
- 1:38:52Speaker 3: blocking a little bit because he's like probably going to
- 1:38:55Speaker 3: come in at like six three two forty five, yeah,
- 1:38:58Speaker 3: somewhere around there. I think he's an underrated blocker, but
- 1:39:01Speaker 3: I think that he's more of like a perimeter get
- 1:39:06Speaker 3: on a safety type of blocker, right, Like, I don't
- 1:39:08Speaker 3: think that he's somebody that's going to block defensive ends
- 1:39:11Speaker 3: and linebackers at a high level, you know, in the pros.
- 1:39:15Speaker 4: Yeah, so.
- 1:39:17Speaker 3: Maybe you know, like I really like Sadik, and I
- 1:39:20Speaker 3: think that he's enough of a blocker. You know. I
- 1:39:23Speaker 3: was going into his film expecting to see no blocking,
- 1:39:25Speaker 3: and I thought I saw a little bit of blocking
- 1:39:27Speaker 3: at least, So, you know, I don't hate it. But
- 1:39:30Speaker 3: every time, not every time, but a lot of the
- 1:39:32Speaker 3: time that he tried to block in line against like
- 1:39:34Speaker 3: a true defensive end or outside linebacker, it was rough.
- 1:39:38Speaker 3: So he's not exactly that. But the talent is is immense,
- 1:39:41Speaker 3: you know, in terms of the receiving upside, and I
- 1:39:43Speaker 3: think he blocks just enough so that he's gonna be
- 1:39:47Speaker 3: just fine.
- 1:39:47Speaker 5: The guy I'm looking at is Oscar Delp, and I
- 1:39:50Speaker 5: think this is a huge, huge week.
- 1:39:53Speaker 4: For Oscar Delp.
- 1:39:55Speaker 5: Anywhere you look at the projections, some people have him
- 1:39:57Speaker 5: going late in the second round. Some people haven't sneaking
- 1:40:00Speaker 5: in the top two hundred. He doesn't have the production
- 1:40:02Speaker 5: because Georgia's offense is weird and he split time with
- 1:40:04Speaker 5: Loss and Lucky, who's really good.
- 1:40:06Speaker 4: But he's going back to school.
- 1:40:09Speaker 5: When he has an opportunities to make plays, he makes plays,
- 1:40:11Speaker 5: and he blocked. He blocked a lot in college. Now
- 1:40:14Speaker 5: he's nobody's gonna mistake him for another left tackle. But
- 1:40:17Speaker 5: for where he's coming in at as a rookie, I
- 1:40:19Speaker 5: think you can get him to be for what you'd
- 1:40:21Speaker 5: want out of a tight end, a functional blocker.
- 1:40:22Speaker 4: I think he can be a truly well rounded guy.
- 1:40:24Speaker 5: It's just a matter of would they have to take
- 1:40:27Speaker 5: him at sixty three or could they get him later.
- 1:40:30Speaker 5: You know a lot of mocks have them taken him
- 1:40:32Speaker 5: right now, with whatever that pick ends up being one,
- 1:40:34Speaker 5: twenty four, one twenty five, that'd be great. I think
- 1:40:37Speaker 5: he's gonna crush the combine. I think he's gonna be
- 1:40:38Speaker 5: a top one hundred pick. That's I like Oscar Delp
- 1:40:41Speaker 5: though I think he is. It's a good tight end class,
- 1:40:45Speaker 5: but there's not a lot of well rounded players. It's
- 1:40:47Speaker 5: either really good receivers or really good blockers. Delp to me,
- 1:40:51Speaker 5: is the guy that's gonna give you a little bit
- 1:40:53Speaker 5: of everything. He's my guy for them.
- 1:40:57Speaker 3: Yeah. I like Delp. When I liked about him is
- 1:41:00Speaker 3: like he just is really fluid, right, He's really quickly
- 1:41:04Speaker 3: really yeah, you know he's not obviously nobody's like rock Bowers,
- 1:41:08Speaker 3: but he looks like he looks like that Georgia tight end,
- 1:41:12Speaker 3: you know, like that sort of Scott Georgia. Yeah, like
- 1:41:16Speaker 3: Georgia receiving tight end.
- 1:41:18Speaker 4: Uh.
- 1:41:19Speaker 3: And you see that, you know, that fluidity, that ability
- 1:41:22Speaker 3: you know in the first ten yards, Like you know,
- 1:41:24Speaker 3: obviously when with tight end, you're gonna run the seam
- 1:41:26Speaker 3: a lot, You're gonna run across the field a lot.
- 1:41:28Speaker 3: And like, how quickly can you get on the linebackers
- 1:41:31Speaker 3: is big? You know, can you get those linebackers to
- 1:41:34Speaker 3: really feel like they have to get out and get
- 1:41:37Speaker 3: to depth because then you know that obviously allows you
- 1:41:40Speaker 3: to run the ball more effectively when you get that
- 1:41:43Speaker 3: whole thing sequenced together. So I see that, and I
- 1:41:46Speaker 3: think that he's got like some untapped potential as a blocker.
- 1:41:50Speaker 3: You know, could they get his blocking a little bit better?
- 1:41:52Speaker 3: Can he add some massive play strength in the NFL
- 1:41:56Speaker 3: and fill out a little bit? Like I think that
- 1:41:58Speaker 3: that's possibly possibly there with him. And then you know,
- 1:42:02Speaker 3: when we had Dana on you know Brugler, he mentioned
- 1:42:05Speaker 3: just like some pure blocking tight ends, you know, guys
- 1:42:08Speaker 3: that were pure blocking.
- 1:42:09Speaker 9: Yeah, you know.
- 1:42:11Speaker 4: Draft too, that becomes your third guy.
- 1:42:15Speaker 3: Yeah, right, So you know, is there a possibility that
- 1:42:17Speaker 3: they double dip? You know, they have two fours and
- 1:42:20Speaker 3: they have four sixth round picks, so it's like one
- 1:42:23Speaker 3: of those sixth round picks. I don't remember exactly where
- 1:42:26Speaker 3: where Jackson Hawes went, but like Bills Jackson Hawes on
- 1:42:30Speaker 3: Day three the draft, and you know, he's one of
- 1:42:33Speaker 3: the best blocking tight ends in football as a rookie
- 1:42:36Speaker 3: and like a really big part of what they did
- 1:42:38Speaker 3: last year in the run game. So is that a
- 1:42:41Speaker 3: possibility that you you know, kind of double dip their
- 1:42:44Speaker 3: one sort of receiving upside guy, one blocking upside guy.
- 1:42:48Speaker 4: Do you remember who he mentioned for the blocking Titans.
- 1:42:51Speaker 3: I was just trying to remember it. I remember him mentioning, uh,
- 1:42:57Speaker 3: the guy Roush from Stanford Sam Rouse, no mention, Noakowski, Yes,
- 1:43:05Speaker 3: that was the other one.
- 1:43:06Speaker 4: I think the guy they stands the names.
- 1:43:10Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, in a bore kicker from A and M.
- 1:43:13Speaker 3: Is like an h back full back type, right.
- 1:43:15Speaker 4: Yeah, we'll get into the full back in a second.
- 1:43:17Speaker 4: Weave an email about that. Have you watched day Kwon
- 1:43:18Speaker 4: Wright from Ole miss ital No?
- 1:43:21Speaker 3: I have.
- 1:43:22Speaker 4: I we'll revisit that one later.
- 1:43:23Speaker 5: I think you're gonna he's more of a pure pass catch,
- 1:43:25Speaker 5: but I think you're gonna like him.
- 1:43:26Speaker 4: Uh speak. We were talking about Georgia schools that no
- 1:43:28Speaker 4: tight ends.
- 1:43:29Speaker 5: Speaking of schools that no tight ends. Nate is in Iowa.
- 1:43:32Speaker 5: This question is not actually about an Iowa tight end.
- 1:43:35Speaker 5: I was curious if you've watched Eli Rearden, right. I
- 1:43:38Speaker 5: think I'm pronouncing that right from Notre Dame.
- 1:43:42Speaker 3: I haven't watched him specifically, no, but I have heard
- 1:43:46Speaker 3: the name, and you know Notre Dame tight ends, right, right,
- 1:43:49Speaker 3: so I have a do you have a take on him?
- 1:43:52Speaker 5: He might be kind of the day three Oscar del
- 1:43:55Speaker 5: you know, more well rounded than a lot of these guys,
- 1:43:58Speaker 5: but doesn't have the athleticism. I think that we'll see
- 1:44:00Speaker 5: what he tests. But I don't think he's the athlete
- 1:44:02Speaker 5: that Delp is. I think he's much.
- 1:44:03Speaker 4: More of a pure chain mover.
- 1:44:10Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, look a Notre Damn tight Ends. You
- 1:44:14Speaker 3: know they have a type there right Like I don't.
- 1:44:16Speaker 3: I wouldn't really describe any of those Notreade Notre Damn
- 1:44:19Speaker 3: tight Ends as great athletes like Kame Meyer. You know,
- 1:44:23Speaker 3: any of those guys, I wouldn't necessarily say any of
- 1:44:25Speaker 3: them are are great athletes.
- 1:44:27Speaker 5: Uh, all right, we do a question about fullback Sean
- 1:44:31Speaker 5: in Vancouver. The Patriots might be counting on brock Lampy
- 1:44:35Speaker 5: at fullback. We missed twenty twenty five on irs A
- 1:44:37Speaker 5: wise put all their eggs in that basket with an
- 1:44:40Speaker 5: undrafted free agent coming off of a serious injury. How
- 1:44:42Speaker 5: about bringing competition with a six round pick like Max
- 1:44:44Speaker 5: Bretison from Michigan.
- 1:44:47Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I would.
- 1:44:50Speaker 5: Say if you draft a full back, he's your guy.
- 1:44:53Speaker 5: If you draft Max Bretison, he's your fullback. It's probably
- 1:44:55Speaker 5: it for Brock Lampy. You know, if it's another UDFA,
- 1:44:59Speaker 5: then I you have a competition. I wouldn't hate them
- 1:45:02Speaker 5: bringing in somebody else. You know, competition is always good.
- 1:45:05Speaker 5: I think Lampy's really good fullback, though, I would not
- 1:45:08Speaker 5: be quick to give up on him. And if if
- 1:45:11Speaker 5: he can, if he's healthy, like he can play, so
- 1:45:14Speaker 5: I wouldn't rush to get rid of him. And I
- 1:45:16Speaker 5: think if you use a draft pick on him, it's
- 1:45:17Speaker 5: like long snapper, right, If you use a draft pick
- 1:45:19Speaker 5: on a full back, that's your fullback. Now, maybe they
- 1:45:21Speaker 5: keep two, like was it the Chargers that had two
- 1:45:24Speaker 5: fullbacks on their roster. Maybe Josh McDaniels wants to get wild, but.
- 1:45:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean they had they had those two guys,
- 1:45:32Speaker 3: and they're kind of like a line slash full rice right,
- 1:45:35Speaker 3: and then played on defense at one point.
- 1:45:37Speaker 4: I like Brettison.
- 1:45:38Speaker 5: I don't think you need to use a draft pick
- 1:45:40Speaker 5: on fullback competition. If you look at Bredison and you
- 1:45:43Speaker 5: say he's much better than Lampy, we want him to
- 1:45:45Speaker 5: be our guy by all means, use the pick. I
- 1:45:47Speaker 5: don't think you're doing that for competition though, like that's
- 1:45:49Speaker 5: your guy if you draft him. If not, you go
- 1:45:51Speaker 5: and you know you going maybe going to the udfas
- 1:45:53Speaker 5: you bring in somebody else. And there are some guys
- 1:45:56Speaker 5: in there Navy is like I think three two or
- 1:45:58Speaker 5: three fullbacks in the draft this year.
- 1:46:02Speaker 3: Yeah, but yeah, they're they're there are a couple and uh,
- 1:46:04Speaker 3: you know, I think that we fall back to. I
- 1:46:10Speaker 3: just wonder. You know, they have those four six round
- 1:46:12Speaker 3: picks I keep coming back to, and if you're gonna
- 1:46:16Speaker 3: use all four of them, They're like, don't you need
- 1:46:18Speaker 3: to have roles in mind for those players? And they
- 1:46:20Speaker 3: just drafted a long snapper and they just drafted a kicker. Yeah,
- 1:46:23Speaker 3: I'm gonna come on nearer side of the street. I
- 1:46:25Speaker 3: was like, could a punter be in the mix there?
- 1:46:28Speaker 5: So I was gonna say, one, they should not be
- 1:46:32Speaker 5: making all four of those picks. They trade move up,
- 1:46:36Speaker 5: but like, yeah, I wouldn't you know barriers going to
- 1:46:40Speaker 5: the last year of his deal had he now punter
- 1:46:43Speaker 5: is is we saw this last year with the kicker
- 1:46:47Speaker 5: and ended up working out who had a better.
- 1:46:49Speaker 4: Summer, Parker Romo or any Borgoalis.
- 1:46:55Speaker 5: Like objectively was Romo but what do we keep saying
- 1:46:58Speaker 5: the tie goes to the draft pick?
- 1:46:59Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, you're if.
- 1:47:01Speaker 5: You draft a punter in a sixth round, he's probably
- 1:47:04Speaker 5: your punter. If you sign a UDFA, that's more straight
- 1:47:06Speaker 5: up competition for for Bearinger. Now he's going to last
- 1:47:09Speaker 5: year with his contract he had down yere. I'm not
- 1:47:10Speaker 5: against the idea of them drafting a punter in the
- 1:47:12Speaker 5: sixth round.
- 1:47:13Speaker 4: I'm just saying that's what it is. I would hope
- 1:47:15Speaker 4: they don't make all all four of those picks, though
- 1:47:17Speaker 4: they should be moving up.
- 1:47:18Speaker 3: I would hope so too. But you know, a like
- 1:47:21Speaker 3: how much are you really going to move up with
- 1:47:23Speaker 3: fourth of the sixth round pick? Right? Like, maybe you
- 1:47:25Speaker 3: can get back into.
- 1:47:26Speaker 5: The two fourths too, Like a fourth and a fourth
- 1:47:29Speaker 5: and two six might put you in back end of
- 1:47:32Speaker 5: the third.
- 1:47:36Speaker 3: Maybe. I mean though, usually when you look at those
- 1:47:38Speaker 3: trade value charts, that aren't like six round picks worth
- 1:47:40Speaker 3: just like a couple points, right, Like, especially in the
- 1:47:43Speaker 3: late part of the sixth round.
- 1:47:45Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm thinking you turn two six and a fifth
- 1:47:48Speaker 5: into a fourth, like.
- 1:47:51Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, look at I'm all for consolidating picks. I
- 1:47:54Speaker 3: think them making eleven picks is crazy, like they don't
- 1:47:57Speaker 3: have eleven roster spots, and then you also are going
- 1:48:00Speaker 3: to think about udfase, right, So like that was my
- 1:48:04Speaker 3: point about the full back and bringing up punter, is
- 1:48:07Speaker 3: that if you end up with multiple six round picks,
- 1:48:10Speaker 3: you know, they'd say they have to make even two
- 1:48:12Speaker 3: or three six round picks. If any of those guys
- 1:48:14Speaker 3: are gonna have a real chance of making a fifty
- 1:48:17Speaker 3: three band roster for them, it's probably gonna have to
- 1:48:20Speaker 3: be a pretty unique situation. And they just drafted the
- 1:48:23Speaker 3: kicker and the long snappers, so it's not going to
- 1:48:25Speaker 3: be there. So it's punter, it's full back, like it's
- 1:48:28Speaker 3: you know things like that.
- 1:48:29Speaker 5: That's also where I go back to and and you
- 1:48:31Speaker 5: know they released Antonio Gibson. That where you find your
- 1:48:34Speaker 5: kick returner, you know, whether it's Burying Brown somebody like that,
- 1:48:40Speaker 5: Like that could be sparty draft kick returner. I got
- 1:48:44Speaker 5: a couple more emails here before we wrap it up
- 1:48:46Speaker 5: real quick. Uh, Brian Thomas Jr. We already talked about.
- 1:48:50Speaker 5: Thanks for the email, Brian in Florida. This one is
- 1:48:56Speaker 5: from David in Bethlehem. Uh, Patriots had a great draft
- 1:48:59Speaker 5: last year and insight on how the evaluation process staff
- 1:49:02Speaker 5: involved in Scouts have changed from the Belichick Mayo processes.
- 1:49:06Speaker 5: I think Wolf actually talked about that right yesterday a
- 1:49:09Speaker 5: little bit.
- 1:49:10Speaker 3: A little bit, yeah, So you know, I I think
- 1:49:15Speaker 3: the biggest thing with Mayo versus Rabel is that Mike
- 1:49:21Speaker 3: Rabel has such a great vision of what they're going
- 1:49:25Speaker 3: to do schematically, how players fit the culture, right, you know,
- 1:49:30Speaker 3: all these different things of like what they look for
- 1:49:32Speaker 3: in players. Yeah, and that goes from the archetypes that
- 1:49:36Speaker 3: we talked about, you know, all show and that you know,
- 1:49:39Speaker 3: that sound at the top of the show, to culture
- 1:49:42Speaker 3: and how they fit in the locker room. And I
- 1:49:45Speaker 3: don't think that Gerrod Mayo necessarily was ready for that
- 1:49:49Speaker 3: sort of aspect of it and had like a planner
- 1:49:52Speaker 3: or a vision for how you know, when somebody comes
- 1:49:54Speaker 3: to him and said, well, you know what, what what
- 1:49:56Speaker 3: do you want our linebackers to do well? What do
- 1:49:58Speaker 3: you want our safeties to do well? What do you
- 1:50:00Speaker 3: want our running backs to do well?
- 1:50:01Speaker 13: Well?
- 1:50:02Speaker 3: Mike Rabel's got an answer for all of that. So
- 1:50:04Speaker 3: I think that's a big part of it. I think
- 1:50:06Speaker 3: the other part that is key in all this is
- 1:50:09Speaker 3: that with Belichick. To Vrabel, Belichick I think put a
- 1:50:14Speaker 3: lot of emphasis because he's, of course a coach. He
- 1:50:18Speaker 3: put a lot of emphasis on what he and the
- 1:50:20Speaker 3: coaching staff thought about players. And you know, we had
- 1:50:25Speaker 3: Mark ross on from NFL Network with US today too,
- 1:50:29Speaker 3: and Mark mentioned when he sees mistakes from front offices,
- 1:50:34Speaker 3: it's often because the scouts do all the legwork right
- 1:50:38Speaker 3: during the fall season, which is like ninety percent of
- 1:50:41Speaker 3: your evaluation what happens during the season, and then in February,
- 1:50:46Speaker 3: the coaches start to come in and be like, you know,
- 1:50:49Speaker 3: this guy tested well, this guy had a great interview
- 1:50:52Speaker 3: or whatever, and then they end up going off of
- 1:50:55Speaker 3: you know, this little bit of information from the post season,
- 1:50:59Speaker 3: you know, pre dract process versus going off the tape
- 1:51:02Speaker 3: and what the scouts saw. And so I think that
- 1:51:05Speaker 3: that was one thing that you know, sort of towards
- 1:51:07Speaker 3: the end, especially we heard this right it was reported
- 1:51:10Speaker 3: on that Belichick would kind of swoop in in February
- 1:51:14Speaker 3: and just sort of make his own decisions and have
- 1:51:16Speaker 3: his you know, his own look at it. The other
- 1:51:18Speaker 3: thing that I think that you know, I heard recently
- 1:51:21Speaker 3: in one of Elliott Wolfe's ten million interviews. Was that
- 1:51:25Speaker 3: he they He said that he estimated that the Patriots
- 1:51:27Speaker 3: had about two hundred players on their board. Last year,
- 1:51:31Speaker 3: Bill Belichick's board was like half that size, right, Like, yeah,
- 1:51:35Speaker 3: it was much much smaller than that. So, like, I
- 1:51:38Speaker 3: think that that's a big aspect of it too, is
- 1:51:40Speaker 3: you know, their their grading system has changed a little
- 1:51:43Speaker 3: bit to where they're now really more focused on like
- 1:51:46Speaker 3: best you know, overall player instead of like scheme fit
- 1:51:51Speaker 3: and fits into the uh you know, into the puzzle.
- 1:51:54Speaker 3: And then also like their board is much bigger, so there,
- 1:51:58Speaker 3: I think they have a lot more flexibility there all.
- 1:52:01Speaker 5: Right, Before we wrap it up because I was a
- 1:52:03Speaker 5: little late, it was one more thing. We're bringing back
- 1:52:06Speaker 5: recency biased players this year. We didn't do it last year.
- 1:52:08Speaker 4: It bummed me out. I enjoyed that. It was a
- 1:52:10Speaker 4: fun thing.
- 1:52:11Speaker 5: Give me one player, especially if it's somebody we haven't
- 1:52:13Speaker 5: talked about yet, just you've watched recently, or who've named
- 1:52:16Speaker 5: whose name you've heard out there, uh that you're excited
- 1:52:19Speaker 5: to watch whenever he works out at the combine.
- 1:52:23Speaker 3: Well, I already mentioned Brazil, right, I think that's probably
- 1:52:26Speaker 3: we did a whole thing. Wait that one for this,
- 1:52:32Speaker 3: I would say, hmmm, this one's actually might might surprise
- 1:52:39Speaker 3: you a little bit. So I'll go at this one.
- 1:52:42Speaker 3: And there is a statement Okay, well yeah, I mean
- 1:52:46Speaker 3: he's just awesome, like, but he's gonna go. Yeah, I
- 1:52:49Speaker 3: think he's going to go in the top.
- 1:52:52Speaker 4: Would you be okay with them taking a guard in
- 1:52:53Speaker 4: the first round?
- 1:52:54Speaker 3: Oh yeah, that alright. That guy's a dude.
- 1:52:56Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:52:57Speaker 3: Tell you, if you're gonna convince me on a guard,
- 1:53:00Speaker 3: you better have like fifteen pancakes a game. And that
- 1:53:03Speaker 3: guy does right, No, but the other guy that I'm
- 1:53:06Speaker 3: gonna mention is actually going to be a guard. So
- 1:53:08Speaker 3: this is going to surprise you. A kind of in
- 1:53:10Speaker 3: on Jennings Dunker. Yeah that and and I think the
- 1:53:15Speaker 3: big reason why is, uh, you know, I'm kind of
- 1:53:19Speaker 3: in on the whole tackle to guard thing, right, I
- 1:53:21Speaker 3: think that that has been really successful over the course
- 1:53:25Speaker 3: of of really ever like all, like, I can name
- 1:53:29Speaker 3: you a dozen guys that played tackle in college that
- 1:53:31Speaker 3: went inside the guarden and have been awesome guards in
- 1:53:34Speaker 3: the pros, you know, just for the Patriots, Logan Mankins,
- 1:53:37Speaker 3: Joe Toney, like, you know, just those types of guys. Uh,
- 1:53:40Speaker 3: he's going to be a guarden in the pros. He
- 1:53:42Speaker 3: played right tackle at Iowa, and we talked about at
- 1:53:45Speaker 3: the beginning of the show at the first hour. You know,
- 1:53:47Speaker 3: them needing to add play strength, them, they need to
- 1:53:49Speaker 3: add nastiness, them needing to add you know, some tone setters,
- 1:53:53Speaker 3: some uh you know, knee biers, you know on that
- 1:53:57Speaker 3: offensive line. And isn't that him?
- 1:54:00Speaker 4: Yeah, No, that's exactly it. And like in the in
- 1:54:04Speaker 4: the best way possible.
- 1:54:05Speaker 5: Yeah, when he gets on the field, Yeah, he wants
- 1:54:07Speaker 5: to make other people's lives miserable.
- 1:54:09Speaker 4: Like the other team, he wants to make the lives miserable.
- 1:54:11Speaker 3: Right, And I think they need a little bit of that.
- 1:54:13Speaker 3: I think that his you know, his skill set will
- 1:54:16Speaker 3: will translate really well to guard. You know, he can
- 1:54:18Speaker 3: definitely play left guard. As a college tackle, He's going
- 1:54:21Speaker 3: to have the range and the pass blocking ability to
- 1:54:24Speaker 3: play on the left side. Uh, you know, as a
- 1:54:26Speaker 3: guard in the pros. He brings the nastiness to it.
- 1:54:29Speaker 3: I think the one question is is like, is he
- 1:54:31Speaker 3: going to go too high? Right, You're not going to
- 1:54:33Speaker 3: take anything.
- 1:54:33Speaker 5: Where are they going to take him? That that's the
- 1:54:35Speaker 5: question with him, right, If they can make it way.
- 1:54:37Speaker 3: Yeah, you know is does he fall to sixty three?
- 1:54:40Speaker 3: Do you trade up a little bit? I just watched
- 1:54:43Speaker 3: him play and I was like, well, that's a Mike
- 1:54:44Speaker 3: Rabel defensive lineman, right, Like that's a guy that finishes
- 1:54:48Speaker 3: and does all the things that Mike Rabel would like.
- 1:54:51Speaker 4: Real quick for me.
- 1:54:52Speaker 5: Danise Dennis Sutton, Penn State edge rusher, late to day two.
- 1:54:55Speaker 5: Pick one of those guys. You know, I have a
- 1:54:57Speaker 5: couple of these guys each year. You watch the previous
- 1:55:00Speaker 5: year's tape and then you watched the year before that,
- 1:55:02Speaker 5: and it's two different players. And you know, he fell
- 1:55:04Speaker 5: a lot. He was supposed to be a fringe first
- 1:55:06Speaker 5: round pick. I think that Penn State program was a
- 1:55:08Speaker 5: mess this year. That didn't help him. He should test
- 1:55:12Speaker 5: wealt the combine, you know, if they don't go edge
- 1:55:14Speaker 5: at the top. He's somebody I like, Denie Dennis Sutton.
