Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Hey, Jim Salisbury is here. We're going right to the
- 0:05Speaker 1: Phillies and the Philly Show Star. Jim is here because
- 0:09Speaker 1: this week I think you were the Philly Show Star. Yeah,
- 0:11Speaker 1: I'm saying it, Kratz. I mean, I can't say it
- 0:14Speaker 1: the entire year. I have to be fair and nice
- 0:18Speaker 1: to all of the different kids, right, you can't pick
- 0:19Speaker 1: your favorite kid, but this week I can, Jim. And
- 0:22Speaker 1: here's why. You had your little bus prop situation going
- 0:26Speaker 1: on with Kyle Schwarber, and it landed perfectly if you
- 0:29Speaker 1: want to start off the conversation that way. How you doing, man?
- 0:33Speaker 2: Good are you? Scott? I got a new prop today.
- 0:36Speaker 2: This is for Eric Kratz to make him feel at home.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Mmmmm oh yeah, can't beat it.
- 0:48Speaker 2: How are you? Guys?
- 0:49Speaker 1: We're good? So tell us tell us about what you
- 0:51Speaker 1: did with Schwarber though. I think that people would like
- 0:54Speaker 1: it and they might want to click over there to
- 0:56Speaker 1: see what you did the episode right before the Schwarber
- 0:59Speaker 1: signing and then of course mix in. You guys felt
- 1:02Speaker 1: this was common.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Yeah, you could feel it coming. Honestly, I could feel
- 1:06Speaker 2: it coming in July. This guy, he's just been such
- 1:13Speaker 2: a success story in Philadelphia, from his performance on the
- 1:16Speaker 2: field to his impact in the clubhouse, to his impact
- 1:20Speaker 2: in the community, and the way the fans embrace him,
- 1:23Speaker 2: and knowing the owner, John Middleton, and the way he
- 1:27Speaker 2: operates and the way he listens to his customers, his
- 1:30Speaker 2: fan base. I didn't see any way they were going
- 1:34Speaker 2: to let this guy get away. I know he's going
- 1:36Speaker 2: to play at thirty three next year, but you know,
- 1:39Speaker 2: he doesn't play defense, so he's not going to lose
- 1:42Speaker 2: a step. If you go on the advanced metrics and
- 1:45Speaker 2: look at his bat speed, it is elite, and the
- 1:49Speaker 2: way he takes care of himself, it should remain top notch,
- 1:52Speaker 2: if not elite, throughout the life of this five year contract.
- 1:56Speaker 2: He's an improving hitter as well. I mean, he had
- 2:00Speaker 2: that non tender year out of the Cubs a few
- 2:03Speaker 2: years ago. It's been agast five years now and he's
- 2:05Speaker 2: just gotten better and better. So, like I said, you
- 2:09Speaker 2: could just feel it going that way. I think it
- 2:11Speaker 2: was he owed it to himself to listen, and we
- 2:14Speaker 2: heard some of the teams that were in it, and
- 2:17Speaker 2: I think it was very telling that, you know, Baltimore seriously,
- 2:21Speaker 2: seriously in it. Pittsburgh in It, Cincinnati in It. All
- 2:27Speaker 2: teams stocked with young players, all teams looking for that
- 2:32Speaker 2: winning no how And Kyle Schwarber, in addition to being
- 2:37Speaker 2: a great productive power hitter, is great with young players.
- 2:42Speaker 2: He's like everybody's big brother in that room. And he's
- 2:44Speaker 2: a winner ten out of eleven years to the postseason.
- 2:47Speaker 2: He can, you know, help bring a winning intangible to
- 2:52Speaker 2: your room. So I thought it was very It was
- 2:54Speaker 2: a testament to a lot of the intangibles that those
- 2:57Speaker 2: teams were in it. And yeah, and you could just
- 3:01Speaker 2: you could feel it coming. He knew he wanted to
- 3:02Speaker 2: get over with. He had a baby coming in in
- 3:05Speaker 2: mid December. He's a family man. He wants to be
- 3:08Speaker 2: Santa Claus. You knew it was gonna end before the
- 3:10Speaker 2: middle of December. So I had that little I don't
- 3:12Speaker 2: know if you can see it behind me as a
- 3:13Speaker 2: little bus. So I brought the bus on and said,
- 3:17Speaker 2: the schwar Bus is about to pull into town.
- 3:20Speaker 4: So all right, you had Joe Jillio on the show
- 3:23Speaker 4: w Ip Legend Joe and he said, he said, but
- 3:27Speaker 4: they got to change this up. They got to change
- 3:30Speaker 4: this up. Okay, Phillies brought Kyle Schwarmer back. Phillies need
- 3:34Speaker 4: a starting pitch, starting catcher. Probably gonna bring jt. Realmuto back.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Is Schwarber signing signifying that the Phillies are just gonna
- 3:45Speaker 4: run it back. And guys like Scott Broun think the
- 3:47Speaker 4: Phillies are just a regular season team and can never
- 3:49Speaker 4: get over the hump in the postseason.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Well, it's been an awfully good regular season team. They
- 3:55Speaker 2: haven't gotten over the postseason hump yet. But all it
- 4:00Speaker 2: takes is putting together, you know, a good three weeks
- 4:03Speaker 2: and you can do it. I don't put it past
- 4:05Speaker 2: this team to get hot. I think this team puts enormous,
- 4:09Speaker 2: enormous pressure on itself in October because of the star
- 4:14Speaker 2: power on the roster, because they haven't won the World
- 4:17Speaker 2: Series in a good long time, because of the huge
- 4:21Speaker 2: payroll they carry, just because of the town. This town
- 4:24Speaker 2: just you know, demands winners. So they've put a lot
- 4:26Speaker 2: of pressure on themselves in last three Octobers twenty twenty two.
- 4:32Speaker 2: They're playing with house money. They played loose, they got
- 4:34Speaker 2: to Game six of the World Series. After that, you
- 4:37Speaker 2: know they're clenching those bad handles. They need to take
- 4:41Speaker 2: deep breath and just let it all out and perform
- 4:43Speaker 2: well in October. And I do believe they're gonna get
- 4:45Speaker 2: another chance in twenty twenty six. When you look at
- 4:47Speaker 2: this nucleus, when you look at this pitching staff and
- 4:50Speaker 2: look at the players they have, I think they're going
- 4:52Speaker 2: to be back there and give it another shot. So
- 4:56Speaker 2: as terms of running it back, I mean that's a
- 4:58Speaker 2: very popular topic here in Philadelphia. A lot of people
- 5:02Speaker 2: are against it. But I'm not letting Kyle Schwarber walk
- 5:06Speaker 2: all that production, all that impact, and you know who's
- 5:11Speaker 2: going to handle this excellent pitching staff. JT. Real Mudo
- 5:15Speaker 2: is going to do it. In my mind, they have
- 5:17Speaker 2: an offer out to him. I believe it's probably a
- 5:19Speaker 2: two year offer. I believe he probably wants more than that.
- 5:21Speaker 2: But all along I have felt he's going to come
- 5:24Speaker 2: back as well. So you got a ninety six win team,
- 5:28Speaker 2: you know. I think there is some merit to bringing
- 5:31Speaker 2: back these guys, A lot of merit to bringing back
- 5:33Speaker 2: these guys. And if you want to change the mix,
- 5:35Speaker 2: there are other little corners of the roster that you
- 5:38Speaker 2: can you can do that, but both these guys, to me,
- 5:41Speaker 2: were priorities to bring back, because you know, I just
- 5:45Speaker 2: don't see I don't see anybody replacing real Mudo. He's
- 5:48Speaker 2: he's vital, and Kyle Schwarber what he does to that
- 5:50Speaker 2: lineup in that clubhouse vital as well. So with Schwarber
- 5:55Speaker 2: coming back, I think the off season's actually off to
- 5:58Speaker 2: a pretty good start. And if they get to October
- 6:00Speaker 2: and finally put it together, nobody's gonna complain about running
- 6:03Speaker 2: it back.
- 6:05Speaker 3: Let me ask you if you I was gonna talk
- 6:06Speaker 3: about j T a little bit, You're talking about them
- 6:11Speaker 3: talking in the works about getting these two years or
- 6:13Speaker 3: is that is that? Has that happened? I just kind
- 6:16Speaker 3: of misheard what you said there, that's all.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Yeah, they have an offer out to him, and I
- 6:20Speaker 2: don't know what the offer is. I mean they have
- 6:23Speaker 2: they have not disclosed that, nor would they. I tend
- 6:26Speaker 2: to believe it. I tend to believe it's probably somewhere,
- 6:29Speaker 2: probably two years, and I think he's gonna want three.
- 6:32Speaker 2: And we know how this game is kind of gone.
- 6:36Speaker 2: They want They wanted to do a four year deal
- 6:38Speaker 2: for Schwarmer. In the end, you give them the fifth,
- 6:40Speaker 2: get them off the market. If you can get fourmure
- 6:42Speaker 2: ones to me, it's worth it. I think JT they'd
- 6:45Speaker 2: like to do two, but if they have to go
- 6:47Speaker 2: three to get him in the off the market, maybe
- 6:49Speaker 2: they end up doing it. And if you get two,
- 6:51Speaker 2: it's worth it that, you know. You see all over
- 6:53Speaker 2: the game guys get these extra years nowadays.
- 6:55Speaker 3: So.
- 6:57Speaker 2: We'll see. I still feel like JT's going to come
- 7:01Speaker 2: back here. He has a residence in clear Water. He
- 7:03Speaker 2: likes being a Philly. He's been here what six years,
- 7:07Speaker 2: very very popular, very close to Schwarber. I think that,
- 7:11Speaker 2: you know, could could signal or at least help in
- 7:16Speaker 2: him coming back as well. Zach Wheeler, who pretty good picture,
- 7:20Speaker 2: carries a lot of weight, A man of few words,
- 7:24Speaker 2: he is openly stumped for them to bring back.
- 7:29Speaker 3: J T.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Openly talked about how important he is to that pitching staff.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Pitchers love him, pictures want him back. I be surprised
- 7:39Speaker 2: if he's not back.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Let me talk about another guy too. That was really
- 7:44Speaker 3: good stuff right there. I agree with you totally. I mean,
- 7:46Speaker 3: why not finish it off here a little bit? Nick Castianos,
- 7:50Speaker 3: what is the word on him? Many rumors we know
- 7:54Speaker 3: about all the little stuff that happened there at the end,
- 7:57Speaker 3: of the year. You know him and Topper a little bit,
- 8:00Speaker 3: So can you talk briefly about, you know, what you
- 8:02Speaker 3: got going on with him and what you've heard.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Yeah, no rumors really, because they've been you know, open
- 8:11Speaker 2: in acknowledging that they would like to provide him with
- 8:15Speaker 2: a change of scenery. And they've been so open with
- 8:20Speaker 2: that and so firm with that. I expect it to
- 8:22Speaker 2: come in the form of a trade or a release.
- 8:27Speaker 2: So I would be very surprised if he's in spring training.
- 8:31Speaker 2: In fact, i'd be stunned. I think they're very committed
- 8:33Speaker 2: to moving on from him and giving him that change
- 8:35Speaker 2: of scenery. I mean, I don't think he can bring
- 8:36Speaker 2: him to It's become such a public topic that I
- 8:42Speaker 2: don't see how they can come to spring training with him,
- 8:44Speaker 2: because you got to get your own the guys you're
- 8:47Speaker 2: going to go to battle with, ready, you got to
- 8:49Speaker 2: get them their bats. I don't see how they can
- 8:51Speaker 2: get him playing time in spring training. So, you know,
- 8:54Speaker 2: I think once this outfield market maybe shakes out a
- 8:58Speaker 2: little bit more and clears up up, kind of like
- 9:01Speaker 2: the musical chairs, who's ever got that last year remaining
- 9:05Speaker 2: and needs an outfielder who's had very good years. He
- 9:11Speaker 2: can be productive when he's on and I'm sure the Phillies,
- 9:15Speaker 2: I know the Phillies would eat a significant portion of
- 9:17Speaker 2: that salary. He's oh twenty million, but he'll be somewhere else.
- 9:21Speaker 2: They're just they've been too open with it, Like I said, uh,
- 9:25Speaker 2: to not follow through on it all right, Jim.
- 9:28Speaker 4: I think the one area that Dombrowski fell short last year,
- 9:32Speaker 4: even in the even in the off season, but then
- 9:34Speaker 4: with Jose Alvarado's positive steroid test was the bullpen. Does
- 9:39Speaker 4: Dombrowski make the same mistake and not bring in a
- 9:45Speaker 4: power packed bullpen? I know, I heard, I heard rumors
- 9:48Speaker 4: that possibly possibly Strom was on the move to get
- 9:52Speaker 4: something done elsewhere. But I don't see how you take
- 9:56Speaker 4: away from an area that essentially, in my mind, collectively
- 10:00Speaker 4: is the only area of the team that lost the
- 10:02Speaker 4: series to the Dodgers. Starting pitching outpitched the Dodgers. The
- 10:06Speaker 4: lineup for the most part in either team hit but
- 10:09Speaker 4: out hit the Dodgers. But the bullpen, not just Kirkering,
- 10:15Speaker 4: but the bullpen didn't hold on to the leads that
- 10:18Speaker 4: they had. Does he address that in a big name
- 10:21Speaker 4: like a Pete Fairbanks, because all the other big names
- 10:24Speaker 4: are off the board as of today this morning, with
- 10:27Speaker 4: Robert Suarez signing.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree with you. The way they addressed it
- 10:33Speaker 2: last winter did not pay dividends. I thought they did
- 10:36Speaker 2: a heck of a job though making up for it
- 10:38Speaker 2: at the trade deadline with Johan Duran coming on board.
- 10:43Speaker 2: But they would like to address that set up area.
- 10:48Speaker 2: And I think one of the reasons you hear Strom
- 10:51Speaker 2: as a possibility that could be moved is, you know,
- 10:55Speaker 2: him being a left hander. They feel like with Alvarado
- 10:57Speaker 2: and Banks they have some left handed depth. Maybe if
- 11:00Speaker 2: they would have moved Strom, free up a little bit
- 11:03Speaker 2: of payroll, he's owed seven and a half. You know,
- 11:06Speaker 2: you could use that to go after a right hander
- 11:09Speaker 2: somebody you could use, you know, seventh and eighth in
- 11:11Speaker 2: in the from the right side, somebody who's tough on
- 11:15Speaker 2: right hander. So that is something they would like to
- 11:18Speaker 2: do and have their eyes open toward. And I'd be
- 11:22Speaker 2: surprised if they don't address that bullpen. They they've already
- 11:25Speaker 2: started tweaking around the edges. They made a small trade
- 11:30Speaker 2: with Tampa Bay yesterday getting getting a big, hard thrower,
- 11:35Speaker 2: and you know he's gonna have a shot at making
- 11:38Speaker 2: the team, and you know the Tampa Bay ran into
- 11:43Speaker 2: a numbers crunch. His name is Uniel Curett, and hey,
- 11:48Speaker 2: if it works out the way the last two trades
- 11:50Speaker 2: with Tampa Bay went, it'll be a pretty good one
- 11:52Speaker 2: because they've got Alvarado and a guy named Christopher Sanchez,
- 11:55Speaker 2: and Sanchez was a numbers crunch in Tampa Bay as well,
- 11:57Speaker 2: so that would be you know, they're gonna take a
- 12:00Speaker 2: look at him. They also got to rule five kids
- 12:02Speaker 2: they're gonna take a look at. But they Wite would
- 12:04Speaker 2: like to keep moving on that bullpen somebody who can
- 12:07Speaker 2: be kind of tough on right handers, So that's definitely
- 12:09Speaker 2: an area they'll keep an eye on, and a guy
- 12:11Speaker 2: like Fairbanks would make a lot of sense depending on
- 12:14Speaker 2: you know, where they're where they are budget wise, but
- 12:17Speaker 2: most of their expenditure is going to be on Schwarbra
- 12:19Speaker 2: and reil Mud or if they get that, get that
- 12:22Speaker 2: to the finish line. To do more, they might have
- 12:24Speaker 2: to shed some payroll alec ball maybe Strong maybe, and
- 12:30Speaker 2: then all of a sudden, now you could be in
- 12:31Speaker 2: play for some more set up from the right side.
- 12:35Speaker 2: But I do agree with you. They that's something they need,
- 12:39Speaker 2: uh and something they're going to work on.
- 12:41Speaker 4: All right, there's a national show, not just a local
- 12:43Speaker 4: Phillies show. I gotta ask you rank the three young
- 12:49Speaker 4: studs that are in the minor leagues for the Phillies
- 12:53Speaker 4: and their impact on the team being Justin Crawford, Andrew
- 12:58Speaker 4: Paynter and Aiden Miller, and what kind of impact they're
- 13:02Speaker 4: going to have in twenty twenty six on this team.
- 13:06Speaker 2: I think we could see Crawford right out of the gate.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Possibly he could make the team and be in left field.
- 13:13Speaker 2: You know, he's a lot of speed, hits three three,
- 13:18Speaker 2: twenty five, three thirty at every level, the knock on hims,
- 13:23Speaker 2: hits the ball in the ground a lot. They'd like
- 13:25Speaker 2: to see him get a little more, you know, drive
- 13:27Speaker 2: the ball a little bit more and get it in
- 13:28Speaker 2: the air a little bit more. But good looking, good
- 13:31Speaker 2: looking talent. Former first round pick Aiden Miller, you know, shortstop,
- 13:37Speaker 2: third baseman, mostly a shortstop. They think he can stick there,
- 13:41Speaker 2: but obviously they have trade Turner, so maybe he ends
- 13:43Speaker 2: up at third base someday. With Alec Bowm becoming a
- 13:47Speaker 2: free agent after next season. After twenty six kind of
- 13:51Speaker 2: a total package player. Stole fifty bags in in the
- 13:54Speaker 2: minor leagues, can hit, developing power, you know, great amateur
- 14:00Speaker 2: he deigree. And then you got Painter, who you know
- 14:04Speaker 2: has had a comp of and comps are very, very dangerous.
- 14:08Speaker 2: You guys know that. But some people think he reminds
- 14:11Speaker 2: him of a young Justin Verlander. Tommy John surgery a
- 14:15Speaker 2: couple of years ago. Slow coming back in twenty twenty five,
- 14:19Speaker 2: but big six foot six, six foot seven power slider,
- 14:25Speaker 2: change up, has the ability to be a front end,
- 14:28Speaker 2: number one starter. So I'm going to say all three
- 14:32Speaker 2: of them impact this team in the near future. Painter
- 14:36Speaker 2: and Crawford in twenty six, maybe Miller in twenty seven,
- 14:42Speaker 2: and the biggest impact of all probably I believe in
- 14:44Speaker 2: starting pitching, and I believe this guy can be an acend,
- 14:47Speaker 2: be number one. Probably Painter and then Miller, I think
- 14:50Speaker 2: can be. They think he could be an all star player.
- 14:52Speaker 2: I think those are their two untouchables in terms of
- 14:55Speaker 2: trade talk, Painter and Miller. I think you know they
- 14:58Speaker 2: listen at times on Crawford, but you know they need
- 15:01Speaker 2: to get some young people in here. You talk about
- 15:03Speaker 2: changing the mix and all that stuff. Some of that
- 15:06Speaker 2: change is going to come from within. They've got an
- 15:08Speaker 2: aging roster. A lot of there's all the stars are
- 15:11Speaker 2: north to thirty and maybe even in a lot of
- 15:14Speaker 2: cases significantly. You know they're thirty three and thirty four.
- 15:18Speaker 2: Wheeler is going to pitch at thirty six next year,
- 15:22Speaker 2: you know, real Moodo is gonna be thirty four, I believe.
- 15:25Speaker 2: Uh So they need to get some youth in here,
- 15:28Speaker 2: and Miller, Painter and Crawford are a good place to start,
- 15:31Speaker 2: a good place to start. Really eager to see what
- 15:33Speaker 2: they look like in twenty six. And like I said,
- 15:36Speaker 2: I think we will see Painter in that rotation. They
- 15:40Speaker 2: need him in their rotation. I mean, they're going to
- 15:42Speaker 2: watch his innings. I don't know if he's going to
- 15:43Speaker 2: be there in April, but he's going to carry a
- 15:45Speaker 2: significant load for this team. He needs to, They really
- 15:48Speaker 2: need him to. And Crawford is well in the outfield,
- 15:51Speaker 2: and then Miller not far behind. He'll go to triple
- 15:54Speaker 2: A and then they'll get a better gauge on on
- 15:56Speaker 2: his you know trajectory.
- 15:59Speaker 4: Jim quick One, the picture behind you is that Jake Deakman.
- 16:03Speaker 4: The picture that's behind you at the top. Is that
- 16:05Speaker 4: is that Jake Deacman in the picture.
- 16:07Speaker 2: That's Billy Wagner.
- 16:10Speaker 4: Really, Okay, so that's when big long glove, that's what
- 16:14Speaker 4: I was thinking of. So that's an old, old picture.
- 16:18Speaker 2: That's twenty years ago, cratsy I and that's me in
- 16:23Speaker 2: the picture. And I caught one of his bullpen sessions
- 16:26Speaker 2: in clear Water and wrote a story about it. So
- 16:29Speaker 2: it was quite a thrill. And he he he let
- 16:33Speaker 2: it out. It was So that's that's that's the story
- 16:36Speaker 2: that was that I wrote in the Philadelphia inquire about
- 16:39Speaker 2: catching Billy Wagner's bullpen session. It was very illuminating.
- 16:42Speaker 4: Uh.
- 16:43Speaker 2: And I had to sign a waiver and in the
- 16:46Speaker 2: second second sentence of the waiver the word death appeared.
- 16:54Speaker 4: You still signed it, though, look at you look at it.
- 16:56Speaker 4: Look at You're reckless.
- 16:58Speaker 2: Anything anything for the for the readers, you know that, anything.
- 17:02Speaker 1: For readers, anything for a good story. I also like
- 17:05Speaker 1: how he threw a deacon at you, and hey, he
- 17:07Speaker 1: could sling it back in the day, but Billy Wagner
- 17:09Speaker 1: is a little bit of an upgrade.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Jake Deekman one of the one of the great stories
- 17:15Speaker 2: of player development. In my mind. He was at Low
- 17:20Speaker 2: A in Lakewood, good pitcher's body obviously throwing right over
- 17:26Speaker 2: the top and wasn't getting anybody out for like three years.
- 17:30Speaker 2: And uh, the pitching coach over there in Lakewood was
- 17:33Speaker 2: Bob Malackey and went up to him one day and said,
- 17:39Speaker 2: you know, Jake, we want you to really drop down
- 17:42Speaker 2: and like, you know, almost like scrape the scrape the
- 17:45Speaker 2: mound when you're delivering the ball. It was either that
- 17:47Speaker 2: or get released. He just wasn't getting people out, so
- 17:51Speaker 2: they put him on the phantom disabled list, and they
- 17:54Speaker 2: both penned him for two weeks with a new submarine
- 17:58Speaker 2: delivery getting way down there and it unlocked a little
