Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Joining me on the line right now is the Commander
- 0:02Speaker 1: of the Darwin Region for the Northern Territory Police, Danny Bacon.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Good morning to you, Good morning Katie.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with
- 0:11Speaker 1: us this morning. Commander, tell me what happened last night.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Yeah, Well, unfortunately there's a disappointing, discussing, frustrating however you'd
- 0:20Speaker 3: like to put it, But there was a property crime
- 0:25Speaker 3: screen property crime spree overnight where there was up to
- 0:31Speaker 3: nine vehicles stolen and six unlawful entries across the Greater
- 0:34Speaker 3: Daren region. Whilst we've recovered two of those vehicles, we've
- 0:40Speaker 3: also apprehended seven years aged between thirty and seventeen years
- 0:44Speaker 3: of age. This morning. There's still a number of inquiries
- 0:47Speaker 3: still ongoing in regards to the remaining outstanding vehicles. Believed
- 0:53Speaker 3: at least five of these have gone out to the
- 0:56Speaker 3: West Daily region and we are currently coordinating with our
- 1:00Speaker 3: reasonable remote policing footprint in that area in regards to
- 1:03Speaker 3: recovering those vehicles and apprehending those particular offenders.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Wow, so do we think here that these vehicles have
- 1:11Speaker 1: been stolen and then other people have driven them all
- 1:13Speaker 1: the way out to those communities, given the fact that
- 1:16Speaker 1: you've already got those seven nudes in custody.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Oh, there's big a number of different offenders, and I
- 1:23Speaker 3: think reasonable to you assume that there's a different individuals.
- 1:30Speaker 3: So there's certainly the ones that have gone into the
- 1:33Speaker 3: remote area, then we'll follow those particular individuals up. But
- 1:38Speaker 3: the ones that we've apprehended this morning, then we'll obviously
- 1:42Speaker 3: make some further inquiries with those people while are in
- 1:44Speaker 3: our custody if they're linked to those other particular incidents
- 1:48Speaker 3: as well that occurred overnight.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Okay, So by the sounds of it, there's more than
- 1:53Speaker 1: just those seven youths that have been involved.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Oh, yes, there is, unfortunately, but the seven use that
- 2:00Speaker 3: we've apprehended this morning, we believe that they're linked to
- 2:03Speaker 3: obviously a number of the offending overnight. As you can appreciate,
- 2:07Speaker 3: they've been apprehended this morning. So those inquiries are currently
- 2:12Speaker 3: underfoot and they will take majority of the day for
- 2:16Speaker 3: those investigations to be resolved.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Commander, is there any concern at this point that those
- 2:22Speaker 1: that any of those stolen vehicles and the outstanding offenders
- 2:25Speaker 1: are still out on the roads in those cars.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Certainly we're where that at least five of those vehicles
- 2:33Speaker 3: are in that West Darly region at the moment, we've
- 2:35Speaker 3: got resources out that way looking at those those offenders
- 2:39Speaker 3: and trying to locate those vehicles. We still have two
- 2:44Speaker 3: outstanding stolen motor vehicles within Darwin and so relevant inquiries
- 2:49Speaker 3: being made to locate those particular vehicles.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Do we have a description of the two that are
- 2:53Speaker 2: still in Darwin.
- 2:54Speaker 3: At the moment, I will get that information to U. K.
- 2:58Speaker 3: I don't have them at my fingertips. Fine, I have
- 3:01Speaker 3: no dramas for sharing that.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Yeah, no worries at all.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Now, commander, can you are you able to tell us
- 3:07Speaker 1: which locations or what you know?
- 3:09Speaker 2: What businesses were then targeted? Last night.
- 3:13Speaker 3: There was six undlawful entries all up across the I
- 3:16Speaker 3: suppose the Greater Daren region. I won't go to the
- 3:17Speaker 3: individual premises themselves, but certainly four of the vehicles were
- 3:24Speaker 3: stolen from the northern suburbs and from the Darwin area.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Five of the vehicles were stolen from the airport area,
- 3:31Speaker 3: and that's a known hot spot for us, and we've
- 3:34Speaker 3: increased both our patrolling but also private security in that area.
- 3:37Speaker 3: So I have some conversations and so what that looks
- 3:39Speaker 3: like is you can strengthen that. But that's certainly a
- 3:41Speaker 3: hot spot for us, certainly regards to probably I'm not
- 3:45Speaker 3: downplaying the crime series in itself, but you know, there
- 3:48Speaker 3: were six unlawful entries and nine vehicles stolen in the
- 3:51Speaker 3: same period of time. There was thirty five domestic violence
- 3:54Speaker 3: incidents reported as well across the Greater Darn region. And
- 3:57Speaker 3: you know, to really be make a difference in the
- 4:02Speaker 3: community regards to youth and families, is that is where
- 4:06Speaker 3: we need to concentrate in that domestic violence space. But
- 4:09Speaker 3: that is a very difficult space to work in and
- 4:12Speaker 3: it obviously takes some time to work in that particular area.
- 4:16Speaker 1: How hard is it then to be juggling all of
- 4:19Speaker 1: that in one night? Did you say thirty five incidents
- 4:23Speaker 1: of domestic violence and then obviously this this crime.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Spray, that's correct. Yeah, So that's thirty five is unfortunately
- 4:32Speaker 3: sort of an average figure for the Greater Darn reason. So,
- 4:37Speaker 3: and I think there's well research out there in the
- 4:41Speaker 3: community that you know, certainly youth being exposed to domestic
- 4:45Speaker 3: violence or certainly a victim of domestic violence is quite high,
- 4:48Speaker 3: and the mestic violence of the territory is quite high anyway.
- 4:51Speaker 3: So it's working with those families and working with those
- 4:55Speaker 3: youths in that early indiveendent space to support and work
- 4:59Speaker 3: with them is where we really need to make a
- 5:02Speaker 3: difference as a community. As I said, there's some quite
- 5:05Speaker 3: some challenges in that space, but that's where we need
- 5:08Speaker 3: to sort of make that make that work happen.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Was just stepping away from the domestic violence incidents from
- 5:16Speaker 1: overnight and.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Back to that crime spree.
- 5:19Speaker 1: It sounds like it's a pretty dangerous situation to be
- 5:22Speaker 1: And if you've got you know, seven youths that have
- 5:23Speaker 1: now been apprehended, but others believe to be involved, nine
- 5:27Speaker 1: cars stolen, and six unlawful entries, I mean that in
- 5:31Speaker 1: itself also sounds like a really dangerous situation. If you've
- 5:35Speaker 1: in this case, got some of those young kids I'm
- 5:38Speaker 1: assuming behind the wheel of a car.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Certainly the ones who've operended yes, and the age of
- 5:45Speaker 3: the offenders are not known for the other unlawful uses,
- 5:50Speaker 3: so I can put in that sort of context. Certainly
- 5:53Speaker 3: you can surmise that they potentially will be young offenders.
- 5:56Speaker 3: But until we actually identify the individuals. I'd hope to
- 5:59Speaker 3: say speculate, but certainly I would say that they would
- 6:03Speaker 3: be young adults, if not young offenders.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Commander, was there risk to the community safety though with
- 6:11Speaker 1: those people behind the wheel of cars at overnight?
- 6:16Speaker 3: Well, I think the there's always a risk to safety
- 6:19Speaker 3: regards to young people behind the wheel. I think the
- 6:22Speaker 3: lives lost and their fatal statistics a youth overrepresented with
- 6:27Speaker 3: that across the territory and nationally as well. I mean
- 6:31Speaker 3: a they haven't been through a licensed process of appropriate
- 6:35Speaker 3: behavior behind the wheel the road rules. You know, we've
- 6:38Speaker 3: already lost four lives this year from a peak of
- 6:41Speaker 3: fifty two last year, and we're tracking well generally in
- 6:45Speaker 3: that space this year. Certainly, having youth on our roadways
- 6:50Speaker 3: unlicensed and certainly not trained isn't an enhanced risk for that.
- 6:54Speaker 1: So yes, Commander, were their weapons involved in any of
- 7:00Speaker 1: those unlawful entries or those car thefts overnight? People threatened
- 7:05Speaker 1: anything like that?
- 7:07Speaker 3: Certainly I don't have that information to handle that is
- 7:09Speaker 3: the case in these particular incidents at all, But as
- 7:13Speaker 3: you can appreciate, all those reports that are still coming in,
- 7:17Speaker 3: or I should say, statements being obtained, but certainly there's
- 7:20Speaker 3: nothing there to indicate that at the time.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Now the police after further from the public, is there
- 7:25Speaker 1: any message that you want to get out to the
- 7:27Speaker 1: community right now. I'm sure that people are feeling pretty
- 7:31Speaker 1: pretty angried but also pretty worried about those cars being stolen, I.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Said, I'd understand that the public's frustration on the vehicles
- 7:40Speaker 3: being stolen and the property crime itself. Well, I could
- 7:42Speaker 3: reassure that the community is that we are investigating man
- 7:46Speaker 3: as we have made some quick apprehensions and we envisaged
- 7:49Speaker 3: making some further apprehensions throughout the course of the day.
- 7:53Speaker 3: We just asked members of the public if, certainly, if
- 7:55Speaker 3: they see any unlawful activity is to report it to police.
- 7:59Speaker 3: I think one of the big things that we need
- 8:01Speaker 3: is information, so you know, if we don't know about it,
- 8:04Speaker 3: we can't respond to it. So we do ask me
- 8:07Speaker 3: as of publicising any behavior, property crime, domestic violence, any
- 8:11Speaker 3: social behavior is report to police. It's very key for
- 8:14Speaker 3: us to get that information. It could be the key
- 8:16Speaker 3: to the puzzle that we need to resolve. A lot
- 8:18Speaker 3: of matters.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Commander, one of the things that we are hearing on
- 8:21Speaker 1: the show a little bit more often than what we
- 8:24Speaker 1: have previously. Is that people are trying to contact the
- 8:27Speaker 1: police for various incidents at different times, and they are
- 8:30Speaker 1: being told by the call center that they're not able
- 8:33Speaker 1: to get somebody out to the incident that they're calling about.
- 8:37Speaker 1: I know that the police are under the pump, and
- 8:40Speaker 1: you know, in no way, shape or form is it
- 8:42Speaker 1: criticism of the police.
- 8:44Speaker 2: But what is the situation here?
- 8:46Speaker 1: I mean, like, is there cases at different times where
- 8:50Speaker 1: you're not able to get people out to some of
- 8:52Speaker 1: those different unlawful entries because they're out at other things.
- 8:58Speaker 3: That is one hundred percent through demand for services quite
- 9:01Speaker 3: high for a range of different reasons. But if we
- 9:05Speaker 3: might not be able to get to your particular call
- 9:07Speaker 3: for service immediately because there may be another call for
- 9:10Speaker 3: service that requires our media attention for the loss of
- 9:13Speaker 3: life or property. And I raise you in regards to
- 9:15Speaker 3: the number of domestic violence instance that we're called to attend.
- 9:19Speaker 3: So what I'm saying is that once you do call us,
- 9:22Speaker 3: the matter is long within our system, it is recorded,
- 9:25Speaker 3: it is there to be actioned, and obviously if it
- 9:29Speaker 3: escalates and we haven't attendant, and we ask you to
- 9:31Speaker 3: course back. There is also still unfortunately people misusing Triple O,
- 9:37Speaker 3: so there's those sort of things. We obviously we only
- 9:39Speaker 3: want to be called on Triple O for emergencies and
- 9:42Speaker 3: if it is to report any other matters, it's the
- 9:44Speaker 3: one three one, triple four, So ongoing in regards to
- 9:48Speaker 3: communication for that to call us, but by all means
- 9:52Speaker 3: we might not be there immediately, but we will be
- 9:54Speaker 3: there and we will provide a response.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Well, Commander Danny Bacon, we always appreciate your time, particularly
- 10:00Speaker 1: short notice this morning. I know that the community appreciates
- 10:02Speaker 1: it and certainly appreciates hearing from the Territory Police when
- 10:07Speaker 1: this work is underway. You know, I think that everybody's
- 10:10Speaker 1: frustrated by this kind of crime that we're seeing. But
- 10:13Speaker 1: well done on being able to apprehend those seven youths,
- 10:17Speaker 1: and I know that plenty of work will be underway
- 10:19Speaker 1: to make sure that all of those outstanding offenders are
- 10:22Speaker 1: indeed apprehended.
- 10:25Speaker 3: And thank you very much for your call, and certainly
- 10:28Speaker 3: we're here to assist in that manner.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Thanks Kay, thank you, thanks so much,
