- 0:00Speaker 1: Now 9 till noon weekdays.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Mark Simone.
- 0:03Speaker 3: More Mark.
- 0:03Speaker 2: On 710WOR. Hey, we'll take some calls.
- 0:06Speaker 1: 800-321-0710 is the number.
- 0:07Speaker 3: 800-321-0710. It's fall.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Just go outside. It's cold. It's fall.
- 0:09Speaker 1: It's autumn. This was like the big pumpkin picking weekend.
- 0:24Speaker 1: I don't know why anybody does this. You know, they
- 0:26Speaker 1: drive way out, a couple hours out into Long Island,
- 0:29Speaker 1: to the North Fork, to someplace to pick pumpkins. You
- 0:34Speaker 1: don't need to do this. You're driving past Uncle Giuseppe's.
- 0:40Speaker 1: There are three of them. They've got pumpkins all over
- 0:42Speaker 1: the place. King's Supermarket. There's pumpkins in front. Christina's Supermarket.
- 0:47Speaker 1: There's pumpkins everywhere you go. Balducci's. They've got pumpkins right
- 0:51Speaker 1: out in front. All the pumpkins you'll want. You can
- 0:55Speaker 1: go to Costco, they got a million pumpkins. But people
- 0:59Speaker 1: want to drive. It's the fun of picking them. You know,
- 1:01Speaker 1: you're not really picking them because it's basically a big
- 1:04Speaker 1: field where these people put a bunch of pumpkins for
- 1:07Speaker 1: you to drive three, four hours to pick. Long Island
- 1:10Speaker 1: pumpkin farmers say that sales are way down. They're seeing
- 1:15Speaker 1: fewer customers. They say it's competition from big box retailers. Yeah,
- 1:22Speaker 1: I think people started to realize, You don't have to
- 1:26Speaker 1: drive two and a half hours to get a pumpkin.
- 1:28Speaker 1: It's like if you wanted a quart of milk, I
- 1:30Speaker 1: can go to six places without leaving this block and
- 1:33Speaker 1: get a quart of milk. I don't have to drive
- 1:35Speaker 1: two hours to get my own milk from a farm. Meanwhile,
- 1:39Speaker 1: farmers are paying more for diesel used to operate the
- 1:42Speaker 1: farm machinery to transport the pumpkins. They say heavy rain
- 1:46Speaker 1: has also hurt some pumpkin crops, kept customers away. Or
- 1:51Speaker 1: maybe they just figured out you don't have to drive
- 1:53Speaker 1: two hours to get a pumpkin. Anyway, 800-321-0710 is the number.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Give us a call. Especially new callers, 800-321-0710. It's 15
- 2:06Speaker 1: days until the election. But not really. It's early voting everywhere.
- 2:11Speaker 1: You know, I think early voting is on as of
- 2:13Speaker 1: today in Connecticut. New York people are early voting. A
- 2:17Speaker 1: lot of early voting going. Let's take some calls. Let's
- 2:20Speaker 1: go to Mike in Florida. Mike, how you doing?
- 2:23Speaker 4: Good morning, Mark.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Yes, Mike.
- 2:26Speaker 4: Early voting today in Florida starts.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Well, they do everything way too early in Florida.
- 2:32Speaker 4: Everything.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Everything. Everything. You know, I think the Katie Zachariah story
- 2:40Speaker 4: and the No Kings protest, they're all kind of related.
- 2:42Speaker 4: Each one of these things, like little wins for the left,
- 2:45Speaker 4: you know, they take any win, no matter what, big, small,
- 2:48Speaker 4: or in between. And they aren't. They're not magnanimous when
- 2:53Speaker 4: it comes to, like, Trump.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Yeah, but wait, wait, wait. It's not a win because,
- 2:56Speaker 1: first of all, nobody, when they do these No Kings protests,
- 2:59Speaker 1: nobody knows what the hell they're talking about. Nobody knows
- 3:01Speaker 1: who they're talking about. You've got to remember, most of
- 3:05Speaker 1: America has nothing to do with this. Even Katie's Zachariah,
- 3:08Speaker 1: most of America couldn't care less about this. It's not
- 3:11Speaker 1: an issue.
- 3:12Speaker 4: You're right. You're right. But they do have, but it's
- 3:16Speaker 4: like an attention, you know, getter. And, you know, that's
- 3:18Speaker 4: what I'm afraid of. And as far as the pumpkin pickers,
- 3:23Speaker 4: I mean, is there any single male that goes pumpkin
- 3:28Speaker 4: picking or apple picking? Remember the apple pickers were calling
- 3:31Speaker 4: a couple of weeks ago, extolling the virtues of apple picking.
- 3:35Speaker 4: I mean, no guy goes under their own free will
- 3:37Speaker 4: to go pumpkin picking or apple picking.
- 3:39Speaker 1: No, it's always the wife. I love to go to
- 3:42Speaker 1: department stores, clothing stores on a Saturday and watch. There's
- 3:47Speaker 1: always the poor husband who's sitting in the chair. looking
- 3:50Speaker 1: so disgusted, waiting for the wife to get done shopping.
- 3:53Speaker 1: He's forced to come along and sit there, and every
- 3:55Speaker 1: so often she'll put something on and walk over to him,
- 3:57Speaker 1: and he's gotta go, oh, it looks great, looks great.
- 3:59Speaker 4: You see it down here in the supermarkets, the old people.
- 4:04Speaker 4: The wife is pushing the carpet, and the old guy
- 4:07Speaker 4: is about five feet behind her with this look of saying,
- 4:09Speaker 4: when is she going to die? This can't go on forever.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Yeah, they should just tie a leash around the husband
- 4:16Speaker 1: and she should lead him around.
- 4:17Speaker 3: It's awful.
- 4:18Speaker 4: The poor guy is so beleaguered. He goes, I didn't
- 4:20Speaker 4: realize this was going to be 30 years after I retired.
- 4:23Speaker 1: All right. Good call, Mike. Thanks for calling. Yeah, there's
- 4:29Speaker 1: pumpkin picking. There's apple picking. How did it become just
- 4:31Speaker 1: those two? Why is it just those two? Why isn't
- 4:35Speaker 1: there pear picking, peach picking? It's just for some reason.
- 4:38Speaker 1: You know, you go to any supermarket, they have 27
- 4:41Speaker 1: different varieties of apples right there. And unlike the ones
- 4:44Speaker 1: in the field, these are all polished and waxed and
- 4:46Speaker 1: shined up, and they look great. Let's go to Ralph
- 4:50Speaker 1: in New Jersey. Ralph, how you doing?
- 4:52Speaker 4: Oh, we're doing well.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Huh?
- 4:56Speaker 1: Say it again.
- 4:56Speaker 4: I'm here. Can you hear me? All right.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Now, what you're saying is, hello, hello, hello.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Right?
- 5:06Speaker 1: Go ahead, Ralph.
- 5:06Speaker 4: What I'm saying? What I'm saying is someone needs to
- 5:11Speaker 4: have a reality check in regards to how farmers actually
- 5:15Speaker 4: try to make a living. And you're promoting supermarkets to
- 5:20Speaker 4: sell pumpkins over farmers. It seems kind of like hypocritical.
- 5:25Speaker 1: No, the farmers actually.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Make more money from the supermarkets.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Than that two weeks a year pumpkin field out in
- 5:39Speaker 1: long island the pumpkin producers the farmers 98 of their
- 5:44Speaker 1: money is coming from the supermarkets where in costco and
- 5:46Speaker 1: all that where they sell a much much much bigger
- 5:49Speaker 1: volume of pumpkins than if they were depending on the
- 5:52Speaker 1: two weeks two weekends a year and a pumpkin field
- 5:55Speaker 1: they'd all be out of work now it's it's it's
- 5:58Speaker 1: the supermarkets where they make all their money let's go
- 6:01Speaker 1: to jeff in forest hills jeff how you.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Doing Yes, hi, Mark.
- 6:05Speaker 2: It's nice to speak with you.
- 6:06Speaker 1: What's the matter, Jeff? You sound a little down. What's
- 6:09Speaker 1: going on?
- 6:10Speaker 2: Well, I don't want to get into that. I mean,
- 6:13Speaker 2: after all, you use your voice for your living. And
- 6:16Speaker 2: unfortunately for me, it's a similar situation. But I wanted
- 6:20Speaker 2: to speak with you about the E train and the
- 6:22Speaker 2: M train.
- 6:22Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:24Speaker 2: You belie your ignorance.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Well, on that note, let's get rid of you. You've
- 6:29Speaker 1: got to be polite if you call. Let's go to,
- 6:33Speaker 1: let's see. Do we go to this guy? Oh, let's
- 6:35Speaker 1: go to Gregory. Gregory, how you doing?
- 6:39Speaker 3: Hi, I wanted to talk to Mark.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Hang on. I'll get him.
- 6:43Speaker 4: Hang on.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I'll get him.
- 6:44Speaker 3: Hey, Mark. If he has room.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Mark, there's a phone call for you.
- 6:47Speaker 3: Oh. Oh, hello.
- 6:50Speaker 4: Hello.
- 6:50Speaker 3: I thought I was going to go through somebody. Mark,
- 6:53Speaker 3: I wanted to reiterate the wisdom and value of pumpkin picking.
- 6:59Speaker 3: And by the way, there's also strawberry picking.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Oh, God.
- 7:02Speaker 4: Strawberry picking. In the spring, it's beautiful.
- 7:05Speaker 3: But the value of it is this. I agree with
- 7:09Speaker 3: the previous caller that a single guy may not be.
- 7:11Speaker 4: Interested in it.
- 7:12Speaker 3: But it's a family thing. We should encourage family things.
- 7:16Speaker 3: And you don't just go.
- 7:16Speaker 4: Out to get the pumpkins.
- 7:18Speaker 3: And you don't just go out to get the strawberries
- 7:20Speaker 3: or the apples. You also want to take in the
- 7:23Speaker 3: ambiance of the magnificent North Fork of eastern Long Island.
- 7:27Speaker 3: That's the key.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Okay.
- 7:29Speaker 1: That's a very good point. You're absolutely right.
- 7:32Speaker 3: But... We have fantastic restaurants out here to go to,
- 7:36Speaker 3: like Jedediah Hopkins House, historic places like that. Hey, the
- 7:40Speaker 3: North Fork is— You can learn about farming. The North
- 7:43Speaker 3: Fork is— You can learn how do these things grow.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Okay, that's a good point. That's a very good point.
- 7:48Speaker 1: North Fork is beautiful. It's just a long way away.
- 7:51Speaker 1: If you live near there, it's great. But if you're.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Taking your kids— Yeah, but it's like a staycation.
- 7:57Speaker 3: It's like a staycation. It's a family thing. You go
- 8:01Speaker 3: out here. Take Greenport, for instance, which is a short
- 8:04Speaker 3: distance away from on the end of the North with
- 8:07Speaker 3: the fishing boats coming in and the short ferry ride
- 8:11Speaker 3: to Shelter Island. It's an unsung hero of the East Coast.
- 8:15Speaker 1: No, that's a good point. That ferry to Shelter Island
- 8:18Speaker 1: and Shelter Island itself is so breathtaking and beautiful. But
- 8:22Speaker 1: it's like four hours away. It's too far away. It's true.
- 8:26Speaker 1: If you leave in the city.
- 8:28Speaker 3: What about people who want to go from Long Island
- 8:31Speaker 3: into the city or people who want to travel to
- 8:34Speaker 3: those magnificent four colors in the upstate shorts.
- 8:38Speaker 4: A couple of hours, but you stop on the way.
- 8:40Speaker 4: But when you get there. All right.
- 8:42Speaker 1: You're not wrong. You're not wrong. You're absolutely right. These
- 8:44Speaker 1: are very good points. Excellent call. The only thing is
- 8:49Speaker 1: you got to take into consideration lazy people like me.
- 8:53Speaker 1: We live in the city. We don't like to drive
- 8:55Speaker 1: for three hours. We like to drive for like half
- 8:58Speaker 1: an hour, 40 minutes. You know, if you're leaving the
- 9:00Speaker 1: city to go out to Long Island, go stop at
- 9:02Speaker 1: the planting fields. It's near Oyster Bay. It's the most unbelievable, beautiful, scenic.
- 9:08Speaker 1: You can walk around there for hours. Let's see, an
- 9:11Speaker 1: old Westbury Gardens is beautiful.
- 9:14Speaker 2: It's closer.
- 9:15Speaker 1: You want to see water and all that. Go to
- 9:18Speaker 1: Oyster Bay. A lot of beautiful areas. But I understand.
- 9:21Speaker 1: I'm probably wrong on this. You've got to have little
- 9:25Speaker 1: kids and a family and taking them pumpkin picking. All right.
- 9:28Speaker 1: It's a great thing. See, I'm from the Midwest. We
- 9:32Speaker 1: did all that stuff, but it wasn't two and a
- 9:34Speaker 1: half hours away. It was closer. Anyway, we'll take some
- 9:38Speaker 1: more calls later. We've got a lot coming up. I'm
- 9:40Speaker 1: here three hours every day, nine to noon every day.
- 9:45Speaker 1: So don't forget. And then coming up at noon, Buck
- 9:47Speaker 1: Sexton and Clay Travis, a great show. And then at three,
- 9:50Speaker 1: the most listened to radio show in America, Sean Hannity,
- 9:53Speaker 1: here on 710WOR.
