- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to Bear Smoke Cows Barbecue for show number three
- 0:03Speaker 1: of a Yukon Men's ice Hockey Coaches Show. Adam Jardino
- 0:07Speaker 1: is to my far right and between us is the
- 0:09Speaker 1: head coach of the Huskies, Mike Kavanaugh, coming off a
- 0:13Speaker 1: very entertaining game on Sunday six ' five for the fans,
- 0:16Speaker 1: maybe not so much for the coaches after a one
- 0:19Speaker 1: nothing game on Saturday, both games against the Catamounts of Vermont,
- 0:23Speaker 1: and Mike, first of all, thanks for joining us once again.
- 0:25Speaker 1: And boy talk about a complete one to eighty between
- 0:28Speaker 1: the two games.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Yeah, in some ways, uh, I thought we deserved to
- 0:33Speaker 2: win on Saturday, and on Sunday it was more of
- 0:36Speaker 2: kind of a game that was up in the air
- 0:38Speaker 2: and we wound up winning that one, so, uh, you
- 0:42Speaker 2: know it was it was frustrating. I was talking to
- 0:44Speaker 2: my staff today that it was frustrating from the standpoint
- 0:48Speaker 2: that we're point three away from having a four point
- 0:51Speaker 2: weekend again. But when I looked back on it, being
- 0:55Speaker 2: down two goals in the first three minutes and coming
- 0:58Speaker 2: back and making it three two by the end of
- 1:00Speaker 2: the first period, you know they have third goal goes
- 1:02Speaker 2: off a referee right to a guy in front of
- 1:04Speaker 2: the net, so it was a bad break, and then
- 1:08Speaker 2: getting that gut punch with point three, and then having
- 1:11Speaker 2: to kill a penalty in overtime when we just lost
- 1:13Speaker 2: the night before in a very similar situation, and being
- 1:18Speaker 2: as resilient as I thought the team was and finding
- 1:20Speaker 2: a way to get two points, you know, it was
- 1:25Speaker 2: really a big positive for our club. Yeah.
- 1:28Speaker 3: When you go into the locker room after the game,
- 1:30Speaker 3: is that one of those where you don't know what
- 1:33Speaker 3: message you want to deliver because it sounds like you're
- 1:35Speaker 3: pulled in so many different directions of I'm sure there's
- 1:37Speaker 3: a long list of things they need to have done better,
- 1:40Speaker 3: but then at the end of the day they came
- 1:42Speaker 3: away with the win.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Yeah. No, there's no question about it that I was
- 1:47Speaker 2: conflicted at the end of that game because I thought
- 1:51Speaker 2: we should have had three points in that game and
- 1:53Speaker 2: we didn't get it. But whenever I go into the
- 1:56Speaker 2: locker room, I don't usually say too much after a
- 1:59Speaker 2: game because it's such an emotional time, whether it's a
- 2:02Speaker 2: win or a loss, that I don't think a ton
- 2:06Speaker 2: of it registers with the players. It's more the next
- 2:09Speaker 2: day or on Monday. Usually this today, it's gonna be
- 2:13Speaker 2: Tuesday because we had today off that you can, you know,
- 2:18Speaker 2: dive a little deeper into the game and you know
- 2:21Speaker 2: what your thoughts were and how it impacted your club.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Start with Saturday, team that had thirty shots on goal,
- 2:27Speaker 1: excuse me, Axel Mango makes his first start of the
- 2:29Speaker 1: year for the Catamounts. A lot of quality shots. But
- 2:32Speaker 1: do you feel you had enough like chances for second
- 2:36Speaker 1: and third chance opportunities the way Vermont played and positioned
- 2:39Speaker 1: in themselves in front of the net.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Yeah, probably not. I would say, you know, we've tried
- 2:45Speaker 2: to be a little more creative offensively, and I never
- 2:49Speaker 2: want to be that, you know, coach, that's a myopic
- 2:53Speaker 2: thinker that you know, we were always trying to be
- 2:57Speaker 2: imaginative and creative and trying to find the new cutting edge.
- 3:01Speaker 2: And I think we've done some things offensively this year
- 3:03Speaker 2: that we haven't done in the past. But to your point,
- 3:07Speaker 2: I don't know if we had enough traffic in front
- 3:10Speaker 2: of the net. And I thought we let and we
- 3:13Speaker 2: knew that was the strength of Vermont, that they box
- 3:15Speaker 2: out really well, and we just didn't get enough there.
- 3:20Speaker 2: We had some good chances. We had some good chances,
- 3:23Speaker 2: and it was a game we played well enough to win.
- 3:27Speaker 2: But that's what happens in those games when you don't
- 3:33Speaker 2: you know, we didn't win face offs, we didn't win
- 3:35Speaker 2: special teams, and you know, the net front probably was
- 3:40Speaker 2: an area that was a fifty to fifty toss. It's
- 3:42Speaker 2: going to be a fifty to fifty game, and that's
- 3:44Speaker 2: not exactly what happened.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Yeah, and you had a lot was I think the
- 3:46Speaker 1: second power play in the first period. He had real
- 3:49Speaker 1: good possession time in there.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Right, Oh yeah, I mean we had plenty of chances.
- 3:56Speaker 2: That wasn't the issue with that power play. He just
- 3:59Speaker 2: he made some good save. Yeah, and sometimes that happens.
- 4:01Speaker 2: I think the thing that I really was happy about
- 4:05Speaker 2: was last year I felt, and I'm not trying to
- 4:08Speaker 2: always not compare ourselves to a year ago, but ye
- 4:10Speaker 2: I felt sometimes revisionist history is good when you look
- 4:14Speaker 2: at it. And I felt like that game turned into
- 4:17Speaker 2: two games, which turned into three games and became a theme.
- 4:20Speaker 2: And then yesterday we were able to hang six on
- 4:22Speaker 2: them and you know, not let the game before dictate
- 4:26Speaker 2: how we were going to play the next day.
- 4:28Speaker 3: By the end of a season. The old adage is, okay,
- 4:31Speaker 3: if your freshman are still freshman by the end of
- 4:32Speaker 3: the year, you're in trouble. They need to be sophomores
- 4:34Speaker 3: and playing like that. But down to nothing in the
- 4:37Speaker 3: first period. We'll be talking to Ethan Garduola later and
- 4:41Speaker 3: Kate and Chahan. I mean, the three goals that got
- 4:43Speaker 3: you back in that thing immediately were freshmen that came
- 4:47Speaker 3: and stepped in. So what does it mean to have
- 4:49Speaker 3: those guys kind of pick up that immediate that immediate slide.
- 4:53Speaker 2: It's interesting because Gino and I were talking about this
- 4:56Speaker 2: last night after the game. I feel that that of
- 5:01Speaker 2: you know, freshmen are and freshmen by the end of
- 5:03Speaker 2: the year, that's a little bit gone out the window.
- 5:07Speaker 2: I mean, these kids, especially in hockey, they're playing sixty
- 5:11Speaker 2: seventy junior games before they even get to us. So
- 5:14Speaker 2: we're expecting freshmen to come in and contribute. And I
- 5:17Speaker 2: think you're seeing on a lot of really good teams.
- 5:20Speaker 2: I mean, BC had three freshmen that almost led them
- 5:22Speaker 2: before that almost led him to a national title. Last year,
- 5:25Speaker 2: BU had a few freshmen that led them, you know,
- 5:28Speaker 2: to the Frozen four. So freshmen are being relied upon
- 5:32Speaker 2: to come in and contribute, and yesterday we got quite
- 5:34Speaker 2: a few contributes. Their their contributions were ubiquitous throughout the
- 5:38Speaker 2: game yesterday, all over the place.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Right, And it's the first time that at least at
- 5:42Speaker 1: the start of a game you changed a few lines.
- 5:44Speaker 1: You moved moved Ethan down with with a Ryan Saddle
- 5:47Speaker 1: and interest in Frasier. You moved Jake Personal up to
- 5:51Speaker 1: with with Honey and Shahan, and then of course you
- 5:55Speaker 1: made some in game adjustments too. But would you like
- 5:57Speaker 1: we'd just like, what'd you see from those guys?
- 6:00Speaker 2: Well, I thought Huddie's line had not been producing enough
- 6:05Speaker 2: through seven games. Usually don't have a quick trigger finger
- 6:09Speaker 2: when it comes to changing lines. I like to let
- 6:12Speaker 2: guys work it out and see what they can do.
- 6:14Speaker 2: And I thought Witcomb's line has been solid all year long,
- 6:18Speaker 2: and yesterday we just felt, well, let's switch it up
- 6:21Speaker 2: a little bit. And I thought Gardula responded really well
- 6:25Speaker 2: with Tattle and Frasier. They were probably our best line yesterday.
- 6:28Speaker 2: And you know, Percival has been playing pretty well, so
- 6:31Speaker 2: we put him with Honey and shaehand. So sometimes it works,
- 6:35Speaker 2: sometimes it doesn't.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Right more with Cavs. We're live here from Bear Smokehouse Barbecue.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Later recorded interviews with Tim Muslik and the aforementioned Ethan Gardula.
