- 0:05Speaker 1: We're hitting the inside scoop with that FT senior insider
- 0:08Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal. I'm going to bring up a name that
- 0:10Speaker 1: we talk about a lot during the regular season. He's
- 0:12Speaker 1: fun to watch, but Ken, I've barely heard a lick
- 0:15Speaker 1: about him this offseason. Where in the world could Luis
- 0:19Speaker 1: Arise sign?
- 0:21Speaker 2: Not exactly, sure, Scott, and it's almost February, and you're right,
- 0:26Speaker 2: we have not heard much about him. It doesn't mean
- 0:28Speaker 2: things are not going on behind the scenes. But Arise
- 0:31Speaker 2: is a guy who is really the most fascinating free
- 0:34Speaker 2: agent in so many ways. Obviously, he has what they
- 0:37Speaker 2: call the hit tool. He can hit for average. That
- 0:40Speaker 2: is the thing he does extraordinarily well. The rest of
- 0:44Speaker 2: his game is the problem. And we're talking about defense,
- 0:47Speaker 2: of course, and we're talking about power. He has no
- 0:50Speaker 2: power in an age when basically you need power. And
- 0:53Speaker 2: his defense, whether it's second or first, is not at
- 0:57Speaker 2: an average level at this stage of his career. So
- 1:00Speaker 2: there are spots I can imagine him being The Giants
- 1:04Speaker 2: are still looking for a second baseman. I don't know
- 1:06Speaker 2: that they would want to compromise their infield defense in
- 1:10Speaker 2: that way, but maybe they would. And then I know
- 1:13Speaker 2: you guys have talked about the Blue Jays a little bit.
- 1:15Speaker 2: I don't really see that. It seems to me their
- 1:17Speaker 2: infield is pretty set. But I would imagine he's going
- 1:21Speaker 2: to get a deal somewhere. It's not going to be
- 1:23Speaker 2: a very financially lucrative deal, and it's going to be
- 1:26Speaker 2: almost a prove it year for him, which is kind
- 1:28Speaker 2: of weird because he is a player who has proven it.
- 1:31Speaker 2: But I just don't see a huge market for him
- 1:35Speaker 2: right now.
- 1:38Speaker 3: That's crazy, Ken, That's great.
- 1:39Speaker 4: So is this a case of not only does he
- 1:42Speaker 4: not have power, but he also can't run right, so
- 1:43Speaker 4: he doesn't steal bases, He doesn't really have a position,
- 1:47Speaker 4: so the one he only has basically one tool. He
- 1:49Speaker 4: can hit for average and doesn't strike out, and that's
- 1:51Speaker 4: basically his only tools. So teams are saying, hey, we
- 1:55Speaker 4: value power, we value slug obviously, which are kind of
- 1:58Speaker 4: the same thing.
- 1:59Speaker 3: We value speed defense.
- 2:01Speaker 4: You have to have more than one thing to get
- 2:03Speaker 4: the lucrative deal because if you just have the one,
- 2:06Speaker 4: unless maybe you're a pitcher that can do one hundred
- 2:07Speaker 4: and five miles an hour, then they're like, oh, we'll
- 2:09Speaker 4: overlook it. Right, But as an offensive player. You have
- 2:11Speaker 4: to have more than one tool to get the big
- 2:13Speaker 4: contract you think you deserve.
- 2:15Speaker 2: A hey, ja, that is a fair assessment. And it's
- 2:18Speaker 2: hard to say that about Louis Ries because he's one
- 2:20Speaker 2: of my favorites. He is a favorite of a lot
- 2:23Speaker 2: of people. He is fun to watch, but at the
- 2:26Speaker 2: same time, the deficiencies in his game are pretty big deficiencies.
- 2:30Speaker 2: And let's look at it from another perspective. Let's say
- 2:34Speaker 2: he was a player who was a really really strong
- 2:37Speaker 2: defender but couldn't hit it all. What would that player
- 2:41Speaker 2: be worth on the open market? Probably not much, So
- 2:45Speaker 2: I'm thinking of a guy like Nick Ahmed. Okay, Nick
- 2:47Speaker 2: Ahmed was a one dimensional guy in many ways, a
- 2:50Speaker 2: gifted fielder and a guy who contributed to a lot
- 2:52Speaker 2: of good teams. But it was a struggle for him
- 2:56Speaker 2: latter part of his career because he really was a
- 2:59Speaker 2: one trick guy. And that's kind of how teams c arise.
- 3:02Speaker 3: Yes, is his defense at second base? Is it that
- 3:07Speaker 3: it's that poor or it's that he hasn't played that
- 3:11Speaker 3: much of it? Because when he was with the Padres
- 3:13Speaker 3: recently they were deploying him more at first base. So
- 3:16Speaker 3: the giants' fear of his lack of experience in the
- 3:19Speaker 3: last few years, or is it just that you know,
- 3:22Speaker 3: they see his foot speed and the way he moves
- 3:24Speaker 3: around the bag isn't going to be enough for them.
- 3:27Speaker 2: I can't speak specifically to the giants, and what I
- 3:29Speaker 2: was saying about them was kind of speculative. Eric, they
- 3:32Speaker 2: need a second basement, so naturally you would think perhaps
- 3:36Speaker 2: he's a possibility, and the athletics Andrew Baggerley has mentioned
- 3:39Speaker 2: him as a possibility there. It's pretty much the only
- 3:42Speaker 2: mention I've seen of him. You ask, is the problem
- 3:45Speaker 2: that he hasn't played it, or is the problem that
- 3:48Speaker 2: he didn't play it well? Well? The reason he hasn't
- 3:50Speaker 2: played it is because he wasn't playing it well, and
- 3:54Speaker 2: kind of both things go together. So it probably is
- 3:57Speaker 2: a stretch to imagine him as a full time second
- 4:00Speaker 2: basement at this stage of his career. Again, maybe he's
- 4:03Speaker 2: someone you bounce around a little bit. I'm not exactly sure.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Maybe he DH is a little bit, but from your
- 4:08Speaker 2: DH you would want more power. So it's kind of
- 4:12Speaker 2: a difficult puzzle to solve if you're trying to fit
- 4:14Speaker 2: him onto your twenty six man roster.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Jez Ken.
- 4:18Speaker 4: What came first, the chicken or the egg? Right, No
- 4:20Speaker 4: power equals no playing. You can't play second, but you
- 4:23Speaker 4: don't get to place. It's great. It's like when you're
- 4:25Speaker 4: a young kid and they bring you up and you're
- 4:26Speaker 4: a left handed hitter and they say, we can't hit lefties. Well,
- 4:29Speaker 4: how do you know? I hit leftis in the minor leagues.
- 4:30Speaker 4: I've hit lefties in my whole life. But now I'm
- 4:32Speaker 4: in the big leagues, I can't hit lefties. Like, give
- 4:34Speaker 4: me a shot. But anyways, we're gonna move on from
- 4:37Speaker 4: Luis Rise because I love him. I know Scott loves him.
- 4:39Speaker 4: I don't know about Kratz. Kratz was a home or
- 4:41Speaker 4: nothing guy. But I love Luis A. Rise. I think
- 4:43Speaker 4: he's great for the game and we need to get
- 4:45Speaker 4: back to a little more of that. But I'm off
- 4:46Speaker 4: my soapbox. We just talked about trades. The names that
- 4:49Speaker 4: are supposed to be trade Sandy al Contra, cj Abrams,
- 4:53Speaker 4: Jaron Duran. Which one of these guys do you think
- 4:56Speaker 4: is most likely to be traded? Brandon Donovan maybe before day.
- 5:02Speaker 2: I still believe the Cardinals are going to trade Donovan,
- 5:04Speaker 2: and it seems that well not seems it's obvious that
- 5:08Speaker 2: their bar has not been hit. The standard that they
- 5:11Speaker 2: set for the return they want for Brendan Donovan just
- 5:14Speaker 2: hasn't come their way. But you still have the Giants
- 5:17Speaker 2: we just talked about looking at second base. The Mariners
- 5:20Speaker 2: are another team, and there are others as well that
- 5:22Speaker 2: have been linked to Brendan Donovan. Kansas City was interested
- 5:26Speaker 2: at one time. Doesn't seem to be a match there.
- 5:28Speaker 2: So it seems to me that he is the guy
- 5:32Speaker 2: that the Cardinals are going to move at some point.
- 5:34Speaker 2: There's not much question about that. The question is when
- 5:37Speaker 2: and do they get their return, desired return in time
- 5:42Speaker 2: before the season starts to make that move. So I
- 5:45Speaker 2: still see him as the most likely simply because he's
- 5:47Speaker 2: been out there so long. CJ. Abrams, It's possible, but
- 5:52Speaker 2: they have time to trade him. He has three years
- 5:54Speaker 2: of control. The Duran thing. The Red Sox have insisted
- 5:57Speaker 2: repeatedly that they're comfortable going with all of their outus
- 6:00Speaker 2: but one of their outfielders could be the guy to
- 6:03Speaker 2: get them a piece like Paradus, who you've discussed, So
- 6:07Speaker 2: I don't exactly know which one of course is going
- 6:10Speaker 2: to get traded. But I would say, because Donovan has
- 6:12Speaker 2: been discussed so heavily, that he would be a guy
- 6:15Speaker 2: that it seems to me would at some point go.
- 6:21Speaker 3: If you're looking to get your food routine down at home,
- 6:23Speaker 3: you need to add some premium protein from Omaha Steaks.
- 6:27Speaker 1: That's right, It's Steaks. The Filet mignon is incredible crats.
- 6:32Speaker 1: I've had the chicken, I've had the shrimp cocktail. We
- 6:35Speaker 1: both love the burgers very much. And there's a way
- 6:38Speaker 1: to save a little money on your order.
- 6:41Speaker 2: So you can go to Omaha.

- 6:58Speaker 3: with over one hundred years of expert teas in the
- 7:00Speaker 3: meat industry.

- 7:21Speaker 3: What kind of message did the Nats send this offseason
- 7:25Speaker 3: to their fans? Obviously we get it. You know, they're
- 7:27Speaker 3: turning over their coaches, they're turning over their general manager.
- 7:30Speaker 3: They traded Juan Soto for James Wood, Mackenzie Gore, cj Abrams,
- 7:36Speaker 3: Robert Hassel who's in the big leagues now this past year,
- 7:39Speaker 3: and Sasanna Harlan Sasana. Okay, So those five guys, four
- 7:44Speaker 3: of which are currently on their big league team, three
- 7:46Speaker 3: of which really had major impacts on their big league team,
- 7:51Speaker 3: and they're talking about only keeping James Wood so far.
- 7:54Speaker 3: What kind of like wasn't that the reason like build
- 7:56Speaker 3: around them during that time?
- 7:58Speaker 2: And so what is the least Eric? Here's the lesson.
- 8:02Speaker 2: And these teams go into these rebuilding plans, five year plans,
- 8:07Speaker 2: four year plans, whatever it might be. They tell you
- 8:11Speaker 2: trust the process, trust us here. Now, sometimes it works
- 8:14Speaker 2: quite well, and we've seen countless examples. I would say
- 8:16Speaker 2: Detroit is an example right now of one that is
- 8:19Speaker 2: working well. They've got some really good young players in
- 8:23Speaker 2: the big league and big leagues, and they've got Max
- 8:26Speaker 2: Clark and Kevin McGonigal coming. They're two of the top
- 8:28Speaker 2: ten prospects in the game. But then there are the Nationals,
- 8:32Speaker 2: and I would even suggest that there are other teams
- 8:34Speaker 2: along these lines through The Reds have not ever really
- 8:37Speaker 2: gotten back to where they wanted to when they started
- 8:39Speaker 2: their rebuild. But the Nats were a clear rebuild when
- 8:42Speaker 2: they traded Soto, and now they're on phase two because
- 8:45Speaker 2: they've traded a key player from that deal, Mackenzie Gore.
- 8:49Speaker 2: And again, the lesson is doesn't always work, doesn't always
- 8:53Speaker 2: work the way you want it, and even when it
- 8:55Speaker 2: does work at some points. Let's stick at the Oriols
- 8:59Speaker 2: for example. The Oriols rebuilt did work. They got to
- 9:02Speaker 2: the playoffs back to back years, and yet they were
- 9:04Speaker 2: unable to take the next step because they were not
- 9:07Speaker 2: aggressive enough in free agency whatever you might want to describe.
- 9:10Speaker 2: They didn't put a good enough big league team together.
- 9:13Speaker 2: So when fans are sold this bill of goods, hey
- 9:16Speaker 2: trust us, it's going to be okay, it's not always okay.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Often it is, and you can understand, for instance, what
- 9:23Speaker 2: the Cardinals are doing right now. In their case, it's overdue,
- 9:27Speaker 2: But is it guaranteed that in five years the Cardinals
- 9:29Speaker 2: went back to where they were not at all, No way.
- 9:34Speaker 3: Another person that has been rumored to be traded but
- 9:37Speaker 3: wasn't last year, Sandy out Contra. Could he be the
- 9:40Speaker 3: one that goes into the season and has Ken's going
- 9:45Speaker 3: to answer how many starts it's gonna be, and then
- 9:47Speaker 3: bang be traded?
- 9:48Speaker 2: Like?
- 9:48Speaker 3: Is that where they're looking like as soon as he
- 9:50Speaker 3: looks hot, he could be like an early June type
- 9:54Speaker 3: of trade.
- 9:55Speaker 2: I'm not sure, Eric, and actually I discussed this on
- 9:58Speaker 2: Fair Territory yesterday. They've already t created two starting pitchers,
- 10:01Speaker 2: Edward Cabrera and Ryan Weathers. Part of their logic there
- 10:05Speaker 2: is that they have prospects like Thomas White Cumming and
- 10:08Speaker 2: they want to give them enough of a runway to
- 10:10Speaker 2: have opportunity in the major leagues. Good. That's fine, and
- 10:14Speaker 2: they did well in those trades, at least they believe
- 10:16Speaker 2: they did with our contra. You want to go into
- 10:20Speaker 2: the season competing six team that won seventy nine games
- 10:23Speaker 2: last year was a pain to play. They were difficult
- 10:25Speaker 2: to play. They were kind of the Brewers of the Southeast,
- 10:28Speaker 2: not as good, but they had that kind of mojo
- 10:31Speaker 2: about them. Put the ball in play. Do some things
- 10:33Speaker 2: play the game fundamentally well. So I don't know that
- 10:39Speaker 2: right away their objective is going to be the trade
- 10:41Speaker 2: Sandy l contra. If indeed they are not in contention
- 10:45Speaker 2: and he's pitching well in July, of course, then you
- 10:47Speaker 2: entertain it. But I sort of expect them to be
- 10:50Speaker 2: at least in wildcard contention. Obviously they're in a difficult division.
- 10:54Speaker 2: We all know that Atlanta will be better. The Mets
- 10:56Speaker 2: have retooled. The Phillies are going to be good. They
- 10:59Speaker 2: might not be as good as their fans would want
- 11:01Speaker 2: them to be, but they'll be good. So we'll see
- 11:04Speaker 2: where Marlin where the Marlins are in July. But I
- 11:07Speaker 2: don't know that in spring training they would even entertain
- 11:10Speaker 2: this because they do plan on competing at a higher
- 11:14Speaker 2: level this season.
- 11:16Speaker 4: Ken, I'm just gonna give you a warning now that
- 11:19Speaker 4: people in the comments are going to destroy you about
- 11:23Speaker 4: saying that the Marlins need to keep Sandy and keep
- 11:26Speaker 4: Ryan Weathers and all this because they have apparently the
- 11:29Speaker 4: greatest pitching depth in the history of Major League Baseball.
- 11:33Speaker 4: When I said Ryan Weather seems like someone you might
- 11:36Speaker 4: want to keep around, I got absolutely destroyed. Because you
- 11:39Speaker 4: don't understand how deep to Marlin's pitching staff is. And
- 11:43Speaker 4: they named three kids, four kids, five kids, six kids,
- 11:45Speaker 4: twenty five pitchers that are from the Complex League to
- 11:49Speaker 4: the Triple A. So Ken just you know, the Marlins
- 11:52Speaker 4: have the greatest conglomeration of pitching prospects ever assemble a J.
- 11:58Speaker 2: I would advise you not to look at the comments
- 12:00Speaker 2: if you're going to be that sensitive about them. The
- 12:02Speaker 2: Marlins do have they do have seacent pitching depth. They
- 12:06Speaker 2: do have it, and that doesn't mean it's all going
- 12:08Speaker 2: to translate into success.
- 12:10Speaker 3: We know this.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Pictures get hurt all the time. The Marlins have experienced
- 12:13Speaker 2: this with countless pictures in recent years. But the way
- 12:17Speaker 2: they are going about it, the reasons that they traded
- 12:20Speaker 2: Cabrera and Weather's part of it was because they could
- 12:23Speaker 2: get good value for them, and the other part was
- 12:25Speaker 2: they feel that, as I mentioned, guys like Thomas White
- 12:28Speaker 2: are coming and they want those guys to get fair opportunities.
- 12:32Speaker 2: So I'm sorry that people are getting upset with you, AJ,
- 12:35Speaker 2: but I understand the logic there. I understand why fans
- 12:39Speaker 2: of the Marlins are saying that that is what the
- 12:41Speaker 2: Marlins are saying, and that is kind of how they're operating. Obviously,
- 12:45Speaker 2: we'll see how it all comes together.
- 12:47Speaker 3: Okay. And I saw a smile when you said sorry,
- 12:49Speaker 3: And if you say sorry and you smile at the
- 12:52Speaker 3: same time, it's not that genuine.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Well you got me, Eric, What could I say?
- 12:59Speaker 3: Oba Schef from Dave Dobrowski's words, was a very close
- 13:04Speaker 3: to being a Philly. Is there any smoke to the
- 13:08Speaker 3: fact that they may have had to trade it Bryson
- 13:11Speaker 3: Stott or Alec Bowman? Could that still be a way
- 13:14Speaker 3: that the Phillies maybe add some major piece, or they
- 13:19Speaker 3: come into an agreement with like a a Uhennio Suarez
- 13:22Speaker 3: and then moving Bowman his last year before he's a
- 13:24Speaker 3: free agent.
- 13:26Speaker 2: All those things are possible. And Boehm was a guy
- 13:28Speaker 2: they've talked about for over a year now, so that
- 13:31Speaker 2: is certainly something that's been in play. But they were
- 13:34Speaker 2: going to sign Bishett regardless of whether they had a
- 13:37Speaker 2: trade in place for Bohm. In my opinion, I'm not
- 13:40Speaker 2: sure of that, but I don't know that they were
- 13:43Speaker 2: too worried about Alec Bohm. They wanted bo Baschett, and
- 13:46Speaker 2: yes they did come close, but it's free agency teams
- 13:49Speaker 2: do come out of nowhere, and that's what happened with
- 13:51Speaker 2: the Mets. The Mets will tell you they didn't come
- 13:52Speaker 2: out of nowhere. They were in there the whole time,
- 13:54Speaker 2: but the Phillies certainly were not aware of that, and
- 13:57Speaker 2: that is how it transpired the way it did. Phillies
- 14:00Speaker 2: fans right now, if you read message boards and Twitter
- 14:04Speaker 2: or whatever, they're quite upset. They feel that the Mets
- 14:08Speaker 2: pulled a fast one on them with Bishett and that
- 14:11Speaker 2: Dombrowski did not react well enough or was not aggressive
- 14:14Speaker 2: enough in getting that done. But they're going to be
- 14:18Speaker 2: a competitive team now. Can they be better? Yes, they
- 14:20Speaker 2: can be better, and in my view, it would have
- 14:23Speaker 2: been helpful for them to do a little bit more
- 14:25Speaker 2: this offseason simply because I don't want to say it's
- 14:29Speaker 2: stale there. They've had a great run, but they're getting
- 14:33Speaker 2: older and you would want a younger position player like
- 14:36Speaker 2: a Bichette in the mix. So I can understand the frustration.
- 14:40Speaker 2: They're essentially running it back, and that's okay. It's a
- 14:43Speaker 2: pretty good roster that they have, but sometimes there is
- 14:47Speaker 2: a great amount of value in bringing in new players
- 14:50Speaker 2: to kind of bring in new energy. The Dodgers have
- 14:53Speaker 2: done that over the years, not just with Tucker, in fact,
- 14:56Speaker 2: Tucker's kind of a different kind of mood. They've done
- 14:58Speaker 2: it with comp mentary players, guys who might not have
- 15:03Speaker 2: been World Series champions elsewhere but are coming to the
- 15:07Speaker 2: Dodgers and are desperate to be in that position. Blake
- 15:10Speaker 2: Snill not a complimentary player, obviously, but that was one
- 15:13Speaker 2: reason he signed there. He was hungry to win, and
- 15:16Speaker 2: you do need that kind of injection from time to time.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Hey, ken, we haven't talked about Schooble in a while
- 15:24Speaker 1: on the trade front, so I'm going to bring it
- 15:26Speaker 1: up again just because it's the hot topic in the
- 15:29Speaker 1: chat at the moment. I do look at the chat
- 15:31Speaker 1: and I love it, and I don't get offended. I
- 15:34Speaker 1: actually get in figurated from it. But anyway, for Schooble,
- 15:39Speaker 1: he's got the arbitration battle coming up with the team.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Clearly there are worlds apart on any kind of extension,
- 15:45Speaker 1: this team is going to be contending. They have been
- 15:48Speaker 1: worse than the Phillies in terms of running it back.
- 15:50Speaker 1: They really haven't added anything besides resigning, Fitning in and
- 15:53Speaker 1: signing up Kenley Jansen for the bullpen during a winning
- 15:56Speaker 1: window that might close after this year. Bring it up again,
- 16:00Speaker 1: I know the asking price to sky high. Why go
- 16:02Speaker 1: into the season like this, You're basically saying, I'm good,
- 16:05Speaker 1: I'm going to let this guy walk for a draft
- 16:08Speaker 1: pick after the season.
- 16:10Speaker 2: You do that because you think you can win with him,
- 16:13Speaker 2: and certainly they can win the Al Central with him,
- 16:16Speaker 2: and they were in position to do that last year
- 16:18Speaker 2: fell apart. Of course, we know that. But while they
- 16:21Speaker 2: are running it back, and I'm with you, Scott, they
- 16:23Speaker 2: should have done more. They should have done more offensively.
- 16:25Speaker 2: They kite labor Torres of course accept the qualifying offer,
- 16:28Speaker 2: and that was part of their off season equation as well.
- 16:31Speaker 2: They are going to mix in some of these kids,
- 16:33Speaker 2: and I still question their bullpen. I still think they
- 16:35Speaker 2: need another starter. But they're gonna be good. So that's
- 16:39Speaker 2: why you keep schoobled because you're trying to win. You
- 16:41Speaker 2: don't sign Kyle Finnegan. You don't sign Kenley Jansen unless
- 16:45Speaker 2: you're trying to win. Now, it's like anything else. If
- 16:48Speaker 2: you get the right offer, the right piece is back
- 16:50Speaker 2: that would help you compete this year and beyond, you
- 16:54Speaker 2: do it but what is Serk Scuobel's worth. He's one
- 16:58Speaker 2: of the best pitchers, if not the best pitcher in
- 17:00Speaker 2: the game right now. We just saw Freddy Peralta, a
- 17:03Speaker 2: lesser pitcher, go for two top one hundred prospects. He too,
- 17:07Speaker 2: is a rental like Scooble, so Scooble would command more
- 17:11Speaker 2: than that. He's a back to backside young winner, of course,
- 17:14Speaker 2: And the other part of the equation is you'd have
- 17:16Speaker 2: to take on his thirty two million if it's that
- 17:19Speaker 2: in arbitration for this year. Could be nineteen, could be
- 17:21Speaker 2: thirty two. Maybe we get a better answer for this
- 17:24Speaker 2: after the arbitration case is resolved. Maybe the Tigers are
- 17:28Speaker 2: more motivated if they lose and have to pay him
- 17:31Speaker 2: thirty two million. I don't know, but if that's the
- 17:34Speaker 2: Tiger's thinking, he has less value at thirty two million
- 17:37Speaker 2: than he does at nineteen million, because teams would be
- 17:40Speaker 2: of course having to absorb that salary.
- 17:44Speaker 4: Ken, you wrote an article about Brady Anderson, and you
- 17:46Speaker 4: and I in New York talked about Brady Anderson, and
- 17:48Speaker 4: I told you my one Brady Anderson story, which was
- 17:53Speaker 4: I remember my first Big League spring training. He was
- 17:55Speaker 4: out running in the outfield in only his sliding shorts, which,
- 17:58Speaker 4: by the way, if Brady Anderson and was jacked, by
- 18:00Speaker 4: the way, okay, so I couldn't fault him. But now
- 18:04Speaker 4: he's a hitting coach. But I have heard and people
- 18:07Speaker 4: in the Orioles. He has always been around the Orioles.
- 18:09Speaker 4: I know he was very close with the Angelo's family.
- 18:12Speaker 4: But now it's official he's a hitting coach. Why do
- 18:14Speaker 4: we think he'll succeed as a hitting coach when so
- 18:16Speaker 4: many others have failed.
- 18:18Speaker 2: A j I love saying this to you. You've got
- 18:20Speaker 2: to read the story, and I know you did, so
- 18:22Speaker 2: thank you for that. But the reason people believe that
- 18:26Speaker 2: he will be a successful hitting coach is because he
- 18:28Speaker 2: essentially has been a coach for a long time. He
- 18:32Speaker 2: was with the Orioles from twenty ten to nineteen in
- 18:35Speaker 2: a front office capacity, but that job was kind of undefined,
- 18:39Speaker 2: and that job entailed a lot of coaching. He worked
- 18:43Speaker 2: with the hitting coaches, He threw batting practice, he assisted
- 18:47Speaker 2: with analytics, He ran their strength and conditioning program. He
- 18:50Speaker 2: hosted players in the offseason and helped them train and
- 18:53Speaker 2: help them get better. And there's three examples in the
- 18:56Speaker 2: article of players who essentially credit him with helping salvage
- 19:00Speaker 2: their careers. It's Caleb, Joseph, Trey Mancini, and it's Zach
- 19:05Speaker 2: Britton as well. Zach Britton a picture. But yes, Brady
- 19:08Speaker 2: Anderson played a role in his development as well. Now
- 19:13Speaker 2: we'll see how it works out for him as a
- 19:15Speaker 2: full time coach in uniform all the time. But the
- 19:18Speaker 2: players who are with the Orioles during those years, they
- 19:21Speaker 2: swear by him. And I noticed this morning Adam Jones
- 19:24Speaker 2: retweeted the article and he said, Hey, this guy helped
- 19:27Speaker 2: a ton of guys, so that part of it is
- 19:30Speaker 2: not in question. And in fact, the Angels have signed
- 19:33Speaker 2: Trey Mancini to a minor league deal. They're reuniting him
- 19:36Speaker 2: with Anderson seeing if there's anything left still there. So
- 19:39Speaker 2: it's going to be really fascinating to see. Brady Anderson, though,
- 19:43Speaker 2: is a guy that has had an impact on players
- 19:46Speaker 2: as a coach, and that is why the Angels believe
- 19:49Speaker 2: he can have an impact as a full time guy
- 19:51Speaker 2: with them as well.
- 19:53Speaker 1: I think it's funny in the this what kenn.
- 19:59Speaker 3: And I talked about.
- 19:59Speaker 4: This Joseph has got one of the greatest stats of
- 20:02Speaker 4: all time Cratzy. He played in forty nine games, one
- 20:07Speaker 4: hundred and thirty two at bats, zero RBIs. He had
- 20:11Speaker 4: an ops plus of thirteen Scott thirteen. That's like the
- 20:17Speaker 4: greatest line. And then he went on and played for
- 20:20Speaker 4: like three more years zero RBIs in one hundred and
- 20:24Speaker 4: forty played appearances. You would think you would run up
- 20:27Speaker 4: there with the guy on third and down by ten
- 20:30Speaker 4: and just hit a ground ball and they'd be like,
- 20:32Speaker 4: we're gonna give him one RBI for the season. It's
- 20:35Speaker 4: one of the craziest stat lines of all time.
- 20:37Speaker 1: RBIs don't matter and he took it to heart, don't
- 20:41Speaker 1: care about RBIs and he said he was ahead.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Of the curve.
- 20:44Speaker 2: I don't matter.
- 20:45Speaker 4: He was ahead of the curve.
- 20:47Speaker 1: I'm still going to play after this. The last thing
- 20:49Speaker 1: I want to say on the story Ken was how yes,
- 20:51Speaker 1: there was pretty significant shade and smack talk about him
- 20:56Speaker 1: after the Oriel situation. It was interesting to see how
- 20:59Speaker 1: they're some retraction there based on hurt feelings and who
- 21:04Speaker 1: was doing what job. But it didn't have to do
- 21:06Speaker 1: as much with the character and the coaching. It had
- 21:08Speaker 1: more to do with the politics within. The whole thing
- 21:12Speaker 1: is that a good way to phrase it.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Yes, and Scott I wrote that story too. That was
- 21:17Speaker 2: back in twenty seventeen. And one of the reasons I
- 21:20Speaker 2: was so compelled to write this one was that in
- 21:24Speaker 2: twenty sixteen, the Oriols pitching coach was Dave Wallace. Their
- 21:28Speaker 2: bullpen coach was Dom Cheaty, and they were two guys
- 21:31Speaker 2: who after they left the Orioles following that season and
- 21:34Speaker 2: went to the Braves, both of them did they went
- 21:37Speaker 2: on the record with me about their frustration with Brady
- 21:40Speaker 2: Anderson's vague, undefined role, and their complaint essentially was he
- 21:45Speaker 2: had authority without accountability. He had autonomy without accountability. And
- 21:50Speaker 2: Dom Cheeddy said at the time, and did Dave Wallace
- 21:53Speaker 2: as well, that one of the reasons they left was
- 21:56Speaker 2: because of Brady Anderson. So when the Angels put their together,
- 22:01Speaker 2: I noticed Dom Cheaty was on that staff, So I'm like, WHOA,
- 22:06Speaker 2: He's now going to work with Brady after what happened.
- 22:08Speaker 2: This was a long article I wrote in twenty seventeen.
- 22:10Speaker 2: I was with Foxsports dot Com at the time, and
- 22:13Speaker 2: there was a lot of tension in that organization about
- 22:15Speaker 2: Brady's role, even though he was helping guys. There were
- 22:18Speaker 2: some other things going on. So I asked Dom Cheaty, Hey,
- 22:22Speaker 2: what happened here? Why you guys okay now? And he said, listen,
- 22:26Speaker 2: I kind of misspoke. I was frustrated, frustrated with some
- 22:29Speaker 2: other things at the time, and I never really had
- 22:32Speaker 2: a problem with Brady. Guys gonna have differences, you move on,
- 22:36Speaker 2: and I'm excited to work with him again. So that
- 22:38Speaker 2: was an element of it that I thought was interesting.
- 22:40Speaker 2: And it's funny too. Somebody pointed this out to me.
- 22:43Speaker 2: I didn't include it in the article in The Athletic yesterday,
- 22:46Speaker 2: but in this current era of baseball, you do have
- 22:50Speaker 2: guys like Brady in the front office, special assistants who
- 22:54Speaker 2: do work with players. It does happen. It's more common now,
- 22:57Speaker 2: So maybe the Oriols were ahead of their time with
- 23:00Speaker 2: what was at the time perceived as a very weird situation.
- 23:05Speaker 2: I love all of that.
- 23:06Speaker 1: I remember that story. I loved that story because you
- 23:08Speaker 1: just want to get inside baseball anyway you can as
- 23:11Speaker 1: a fan, and there was some serious drama going on,
- 23:13Speaker 1: and now you find out that some of it might
- 23:16Speaker 1: have been frustration. So anyway, check out the article. It's
- 23:19Speaker 1: really good. In the Athletic from Ken. And if you
- 23:22Speaker 1: want to go back in the archives to the twenty
- 23:24Speaker 1: seventeen piece, it's still up there too.
- 23:26Speaker 2: Ken. Thank you. We'll talk to you. That's in that
- 23:29Speaker 2: other article. The first story is linked in the current
- 23:32Speaker 2: article so you can find it.
- 23:34Speaker 1: Right so you don't have to do any digging. Yes, AJ,
- 23:37Speaker 1: two articles. It might take you nine hours with that,
- 23:40Speaker 1: and AJ, I.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Apologize both or rather long they are AJ reads at
- 23:45Speaker 2: a high school level one screen size.
- 23:48Speaker 4: Then it's too long.
- 23:49Speaker 2: Came.
- 23:49Speaker 4: By the way, I'm very happy you made it home
- 23:50Speaker 4: because the text messages in the panic that were in
- 23:54Speaker 4: the that were noted in your text messages about getting home.
- 23:58Speaker 4: I've never seen anyone panic that about getting out of
- 24:01Speaker 4: New York City. I mean, I'm sorry, Kem, but you
- 24:03Speaker 4: should have got smart like me and just jumped on
- 24:05Speaker 4: the first flight and flew out in the blizzard instead
- 24:07Speaker 4: of waiting for it to come.
- 24:09Speaker 2: Slight overstatement there, AJ, but I would expect nothing less of.
- 24:14Speaker 3: AJ was on the DEAs or whatever it's called, begging
- 24:20Speaker 3: six guys who had personal jets and talking about panic guys,
- 24:24Speaker 3: I need to get out of here. I don't know
- 24:26Speaker 3: what I'm gonna do. How about you, Aj, how about
- 24:28Speaker 3: you Rizzo? How about you? I mean everybody.
- 24:31Speaker 4: I will say I got offered seats by two people,
- 24:33Speaker 4: by two people on that dis one on is Aaron, and.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Then what happened and I didn't accept.
- 24:39Speaker 4: I didn't accept.
- 24:40Speaker 3: I didn't he.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Didn't accept, but complained that he couldn't accept because he
- 24:44Speaker 2: had to work on our show. Gee.
- 24:46Speaker 4: True, that's true, that's true.
- 24:49Speaker 3: That's your guys.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Next time I know that, I would have said, Aj,
- 24:51Speaker 1: you take the judge plane and you do an exclusive
- 24:53Speaker 1: sit down for three hours to judge from up there
- 24:57Speaker 1: to down here. We will accept that next time. Okay,
- 25:00Speaker 1: that just didn't get across the approval desk in time,
- 25:02Speaker 1: But for next time, Ken, we'll catulate it this week.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Good times, Thanks guys.
- 25:08Speaker 1: Very territory also out from yesterday and again on Thursday.
- 25:12Speaker 1: Then you should have Ken back on Friday. Thursday's episode
- 25:15Speaker 1: with Alana. Rizzo will take plenty of your questions and
- 25:19Speaker 1: then
