- 0:00Dot com Welcome to the Daily Quote, a podcast designed to
- 0:06kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:09I'm your host, Anna McGivern for October 4th.
- 0:12Today is World Animal Day, a global observance dedicated to
- 0:16animal rights and welfare. The day was chosen to honor
- 0:19Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron St. of Animals in
- 0:22ecology, whose feast day falls on October 4th.
- 0:26St. Francis, who lived in the 12th
- 0:28and 13th centuries, was known for his deep love and respect
- 0:32for all creatures, believing that animals were his brothers
- 0:36and sisters in God's creation. World Animal Day was first
- 0:40organized in 1925 by Sinologist Henrik Zimmerman in Berlin,
- 0:46Germany, though it wasn't moved to October 4th until 1929.
- 0:51In 1931, the International Animal Protection Congress in
- 0:54Florence officially adopted October 4th as World Animal Day
- 0:59since then, it has grown into a worldwide movement celebrated in
- 1:03more than 100 countries. Mission of world animal day is
- 1:07simple but profound to raise the status of animals in order to
- 1:11improve welfare standards around the globe.
- 1:15It's a day to recognize that animals are sentient beings
- 1:18deserving our compassion, respect and protection.
- 1:22Today's quote comes from naturalist Henry Beston, who
- 1:26once said we need another and a wiser and perhaps a more
- 1:32mystical concept of animals. They are not brethren.
- 1:37They are not underlings. They are other nations caught
- 1:42with ourselves in the net of life and time.
- 1:46Weston's profound observation captures something essential
- 1:49about what World Animal Day and Saint Francis of Assisi both
- 1:53understood. Animals aren't simply resources
- 1:57for our use, nor are they just cute companions.
- 2:01They are complete beings, living their own lives with their own
- 2:05purposes, caught alongside us in this extraordinary web of
- 2:10existence. Think about what Destin means by
- 2:13calling them other nations. Each species has its own
- 2:18culture, its own way of communicating, its own complex
- 2:21social structures and survival strategies.
- 2:25When we watch a clock of birds moving in perfect
- 2:27synchronization, or observe dolphins cooperating to hunt, or
- 2:33see elephants mourning their dead, we're witnessing other
- 2:37forms of intelligence, other ways of being in the world.
- 2:43Saint Francis understood this centuries ago, when he preached
- 2:46to birds and called animals his brothers and sisters.
- 2:49It wasn't anthropomorphizing. Done.
- 2:51We're being sentimental. He was recognizing their
- 2:55inherent worth, their place in creation, independent of their
- 2:59usefulness to humans. World Animal Day asks us to
- 3:03expand our perspectives beyond seeing animals as either threats
- 3:06to avoid or resources to exploit.
- 3:09When we recognize them as Best in describes other nations
- 3:14sharing this planet with us, our relationship with them naturally
- 3:18shifts toward respect, wonder, and responsibility.
- 3:22So today, think about Besting's vision of animals as other
- 3:26nations sharing the net of life with us.
- 3:30How might this shift in perspective change how we
- 3:32interact with the animal world? Maybe it's watching a bird or
- 3:36squirrel today, not as a decoration in your environment,
- 3:39but as a complete being with its own agenda and intelligence.
- 3:44Maybe it's considering how your choices, what you eat and what
- 3:48you buy, how you vote, affect these other nations we share the
- 3:53planet with. Maybe it's simply pausing to
- 3:56really see and appreciate the animals you encounter,
- 3:59recognizing them as fellow travellers in this extraordinary
- 4:03journey of life. World Animal Day reminds us that
- 4:07we're not alone on this planet, and that the other beings we
- 4:12share it with deserve our respect, wonder and care.
- 4:16That's going to do it for today. I'm Anna McGivern, signing off
- 4:19for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 4:25Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
