- 0:37I grew up watching them all the work, sort of
- 0:39the same age, close to the same number. Fifty five
- 0:43Mike Reichenbach, Mike back for joining us tonight.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Thank you, guys, thank you for inviting me. I appreciate
- 0:47it absolutely so.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Mike, you have this incredible career most people don't realize.
- 0:52Now only did you play here in Philly for the
- 0:55legend Jay Buddy Ryan. We'll get into that, and your
- 0:57your stories are insane awesome him, but you played for
- 1:01another big time Hall of Famer in Don Shula. I
- 1:04got to ask you this question before you got to Miami,
- 1:07and this is towards the end of your career, did
- 1:09you have any idea what Schula was like.
- 1:11Speaker 3: No, I didn't. I didn't know much about Don Shula
- 1:14the coach. You know, you heard, of course the legend
- 1:16he's been there for so long, but he you could
- 1:20tell that he was the same as Buddy Ryan old
- 1:23school football, but different personality. Buddy was the kind of
- 1:26guy that would say, go tell him how that we're
- 1:28going to beat him and how bad we're gonna beat him,
- 1:29and Don would say, hey, don't ruffle of feathers, don't
- 1:32don't put out the ammunition. So he was very conservative
- 1:36in that route.
- 1:38Speaker 4: Andrew, Yeah, so I have to ask you what it
- 1:41was like playing in Philadelphia under Wade Phillips and Jeff
- 1:45Fisher and maybe what you what their styles were like
- 1:48and how that maybe accentuated what you do.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Well.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Yeah, the forty six defense when Buddy came in was
- 1:54a total different philosophy than most defensive played then. Buddy
- 1:59believed the defense could be an offensive weapon, so he attacked,
- 2:03and so he utilized the defense to change the game.
- 2:06And his thought philosophy was that defenses win games, I
- 2:09mean so, so he used it as an attack Jeff
- 2:12Fisher played for him in Chicago, was a was a
- 2:15good player but was injured and I know that, but
- 2:17but grasped the defense wholeheartedly. He knew the defense very well.
- 2:22So when Buddy went into to coach Philadelphia, he brought
- 2:25Jeff with him, so the same philosophy of attacking type
- 2:29of defense came with them. So it was it was interesting.
- 2:31So it was a little different than when with Marion Campbell,
- 2:34who was there prior to that was more of a bend,
- 2:36don't break kind of defense.
- 2:37Speaker 4: Did you ever get the sense that either would be
- 2:39go on to be head coaches at any point in
- 2:41their careers.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Well, you would. You would think that Jeff was because
- 2:46you saw the grooming going on. Jeff was. Jeff had
- 2:48a good concept of the whole game. He knew the player.
- 2:52He was a good players coach, so that you knew
- 2:55he was going.
- 2:55Speaker 2: To go on.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Jeff Wade Phillips a little different. I didn't think he
- 2:59would be the head coach, but I knew his dad
- 3:02would help that in some ways, because sometimes it's like
- 3:04any other job, it's who you know. So I think
- 3:08that helped him a lot. But two different types of
- 3:11coaches definitely you.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Listening to the voice of Mike Reichenbach, formert Eagles linebacker.
- 3:15It's Adam Kaplan and Andrew Tocheco here, Chicky and Pete
- 3:18and Warrington Pa my old stomping grounds. I grew up
- 3:22in Cheltenham, so it was pretty close by, right up
- 3:23six eleven off the PA Turnpike. Easy to get here,
- 3:27and Andrew, I'll tell you what there was like, no traffic,
- 3:29which is shocking for six eleven.
- 3:30Speaker 3: I loved it.
- 3:31Speaker 2: I got here in way less time than I thought.
- 3:33So get up here. You guys could have drinks of
- 3:35this after I will stay. If you want to get
- 3:37up here and have beers with me, you could do
- 3:38it right here after our show. So, Mike, you were
- 3:41in Philly what five or six years?
- 3:43Speaker 3: Six years?
- 3:43Speaker 2: Six years? So you got there in nineteen eighty four. Right,
- 3:46this is Marion camp old swamp Fox. Let's talk about Swampy,
- 3:50legendary defensive mind. What were your thoughts on him?
- 3:52Speaker 3: Great? He was a good players coach. What happened then
- 3:56as I walked in there, because all I heard was
- 3:58about the NFL and you had to be in the
- 4:00best shape of your life and work. So I was coming
- 4:02out of Division two school as a free agent. People
- 4:05say to me, what's the difference between Stroudsburg, Yeah, East Stroudsburg.
- 4:08They say, what's the difference between a free agent and
- 4:10a draft pick? I said, well, about a three three
- 4:12million dollar signing bonus. So so I coming out of
- 4:16small school. I worked tremendously hard and prepared for it.
- 4:20And when we came to camp, Swamp Fox had that
- 4:23laid back mentality. They had a very veteran football team
- 4:26that kind of we kind of they kind of settled
- 4:29into a five hundred type football team. They just didn't
- 4:32have that fire. So when I came to camp, I'm
- 4:34going after people. Mike Quick was a wide receiver, so
- 4:37he was so I remember one play he was. It
- 4:40was a sweep and and of course I start to
- 4:41pursue outside to get it. They had a crack block,
- 4:43which is a wide receiver coming down inside. Well, I
- 4:46see him coming, so I turned on him and hit
- 4:48him head on and knocked him down. And he looked
- 4:50up at me and said, rookie, do you know who
- 4:52I am? I said, I don't care who you are.
- 4:54I got to make this football team. It was kind
- 4:57of a doggy dog but so so a different type
- 5:00mentality coming out of Division two school and seeing that
- 5:03the more laid back kind of mentality.
- 5:05Speaker 4: So you mentioned you mentioned East Stroudsburg and Eagles defensive
- 5:08coordinator Vic Vangio attended East Stroudsberg.
- 5:11Speaker 2: I didn't know that.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Yeah, were you aware of his legacy at the time?
- 5:14Was he around the at all?
- 5:16Speaker 3: No, I wasn't aware of him. You heard of other
- 5:19guys that were that came out soon after that was
- 5:23Franklin at Penn State. You know, you'd hear about coaches.
- 5:25They were always known as a good coaching They would
- 5:28put out good coaching product. I mean, the good coaches
- 5:31that came from there were very successful.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Mike. One of the things that's amazing in your career.
- 5:36So we talked about Swamp Fox, Marion Campbell, and then
- 5:39in nineteen eighty six guy went to Super Bowl as
- 5:42a defensive coordinator, the legendary Buddy Ryan. Tell us about
- 5:46your indoctrination with with Buddy Ryan and what was like
- 5:49when you first met him.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Buddy was an interesting guy. He first meeting I had
- 5:54with him, he watched all the film and he basically
- 5:58called me in and said, Mike, I like the way
- 5:59you play, he said, I'm going to make you this
- 6:01single call, or you're going to be captain, he said.
- 6:02But he said, you have to come back in the
- 6:05best shape of your life. He said, But I'm gonna
- 6:06because I'm gonna try to kill these guys. It's basically
- 6:09the terminologies. I hate to use that, but he said,
- 6:12But he said, and whoever falls, he said, I'm gonna
- 6:15cut them. So the year before, m Ab did this
- 6:18this poster of individual snapshots of every player. So every
- 6:24time he would cut a player, we'd cut their picture
- 6:26out of the pit. So at the end of camp
- 6:27it was like Swiss cheese. There was only about it
- 6:30was only about twenty guys left. But so he came
- 6:33in and he worked. He put he raised a bar
- 6:36and just he said. This is the comment he made
- 6:39to me. He said, if I can't change my people,
- 6:41I will change my people. And so and that's what
- 6:44he did. He he went about changing the culture of
- 6:46the way they played football here. So definitely definitely a
- 6:51change of attitude. So we got a lot, we got
- 6:53rid of a lot of veterans. But but us of
- 6:56that that survived had had to make it through camp.
- 6:59Speaker 2: So I got to ask this question, So you play
- 7:02in the forty six, what was that like? Because that's
- 7:04a legendary defense. What was it like to try to
- 7:07learn that?
- 7:07Speaker 3: The forty six was very difficult coming in because everything
- 7:11was done on the field, so all adjustments. So what
- 7:14Buddy would do is he'd write a game plan and
- 7:16he would put all the defenses that we could run
- 7:18across the top, which were numerous. It's forty six, forty
- 7:20six blitz, forty six coverage, four three four three blitz
- 7:24for three. He had different different defenses we could run,
- 7:26forty six being the main one, and then he would
- 7:29put every formation the team could run down down the
- 7:32side of the Excel spreadsheet and he said, Mike, if
- 7:36I call forty six blitz and they come in this formation,
- 7:38I want for this blitz. If they could come in
- 7:40this cover, if they come out, if I call coverage,
- 7:42I want this defense. If I called you know, four
- 7:45to three blitz, I want this cover. So and then
- 7:47he said, now if they come out in this formation
- 7:49and I call this is what I want. So it
- 7:50was all memorization. So he had to change the front
- 7:53and the coverage depending on what formation they came out in.
- 7:56Very difficult.
- 7:59Speaker 4: How did you go about trying to master that because
- 8:02it's not I can't imagine it's easy the way you're
- 8:04describing it.
- 8:05Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't. God blessed me with the ability to
- 8:07remember it. It's all I mean, because it was it
- 8:10was pretty much memorization. That's pretty much what it was.
- 8:13You had to memorize what it was because as soon
- 8:14as they came out, and and and the coaches started
- 8:17to see that. So what they did is they would
- 8:19come out, line up, start shifting and motioning, and so
- 8:21we had to change everything on the fly. But so
- 8:25at one time I came off the field and we
- 8:27were we were actually playing the Dolphins. Marino Reno is
- 8:30the best. So we're blitzing them. We're trying to get him,
- 8:31and Reno is the best at it because the man covered,
- 8:34he knows the the the the the the mismatches. He
- 8:38gets rid of the ball quick. So we're trying to
- 8:40cover the guy's man the man, and we couldn't get
- 8:41to them. So I come to the sidelines. I said, buddy,
- 8:43it's not working. We got to get out of the blitz.
- 8:45He said, listen to me. I drew it up. They're
- 8:48not running it right. Go back out there and tell
- 8:50him to wow, I said. So I came back to
- 8:54the huddle and they said, what do he say? I said,
- 8:55you guys ain't running it right.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Wow. Wow. So that's that's amazing. So I do want
- 9:02to ask you, because I know you you still follow
- 9:03the Eagles. Andrew and I were at training camp all
- 9:07the time, right and we it was obviously their linebacker
- 9:10group is finally starting to get there where it needed
- 9:12to be. It it'd been a number of years since
- 9:15they had competent inside backers. So when you watch this team,
- 9:18you see a guy like Jah Hot Campbell, you're you're
- 9:20you're six two, you said, you told us off there
- 9:22you were actually two fifty.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Yeah, one point two yeah, two forty five, two fifty,
- 9:26and he dropped down to what two thirty Yeah. When
- 9:28we went to the forty six, it was a lot
- 9:30of man to man, so I had to when thirty four,
- 9:32you're just head button guards all day, So you just
- 9:34had you had to be two fifty just to match
- 9:37up with those guys.
- 9:38Speaker 2: But when you look at this linebacker, you see a
- 9:39guy like Jahead Campbell around six three, two forty two
- 9:42forty five. That's not like back in your day. Maybe
- 9:45that that might have been it, but usually today's linebackers
- 9:48two twenty two twenty five, which I think is crazy,
- 9:51but you know they're doing it. When you watch the
- 9:54Eagles defense, what do you think of this group?
- 9:56Speaker 3: I think the big thing that separates them but the
- 9:58number one of the guys up front. So you want
- 10:00to keep the guys off of the linebackers so they
- 10:02can flow and go to the football. That's what Buddy
- 10:04was real big on too. I mean, he pretty much
- 10:07put a lot on those guys. That's why he heavily
- 10:10filled those positions. He had Reggie and Jerome and you
- 10:13know Clyde Simmons and you see the guys that were
- 10:15up there, Mike Pitts and you know the guys that
- 10:18played up there. He puts a lot of that and says,
- 10:20keep these guys off the guys that are going to
- 10:22make the plays. And I think Vic finjer he does
- 10:24the same things. He has the big guys up front
- 10:27so that the guys that are paid to make the
- 10:28tackles go and make the plays. And the biggest thing
- 10:31with them is they're more disciplined. And see you see
- 10:35so much in the league now, where guys take themselves
- 10:38out of the play by over pursuing. You know, between
- 10:41the hash and the sidelines, you might three three, see
- 10:43three defenders already over pursued. That's why guy cuts back
- 10:46and breaks free and goes because there's no one in
- 10:48the space who's supposed to be there. So the discipline
- 10:51of not of leverage and not overplaying and not over
- 10:53pursuing is huge. Discipline on defense is huge.
- 10:56Speaker 4: Now, what's your assessment of Jihad Campbell through the first
- 10:59two games.
- 11:00Speaker 3: I think he has the intensity and the ability. He
- 11:03can run, he can move, he can go si sideline sign,
- 11:05but he could also butt it up and play inside.
- 11:07I mean that's the difference. Usually you get the like
- 11:10you said, you get those light guys that can run
- 11:12and go to the ball. They can't take on the block.
- 11:15And that's why these zone plays, which we used to
- 11:17call dive play games, you know, fifty sixty yards and
- 11:21goes for a touchdown. They told us if a dive
- 11:23play gains more than three yards, you're gonna get cut.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Wow.
- 11:28Speaker 3: Because you had everything was disciplined. It was taking on guards,
- 11:32it was taking on linemen and filling holes and making
- 11:35them go east and west. You didn't want the back
- 11:37going north and south. That's where he wants to go.
- 11:39You make them go east and west and run him
- 11:41towards the sidelines.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Who are your linebackers coaches throughout your career.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Well, Wade Phillips was there when I first got there.
- 11:47A guy named George Hill, who was an old Woody
- 11:50Hayes coached under Woody Hayes and had the same philosophers.
- 11:54So we went to play one year when I was
- 11:57with the Dolphins. Actually, because George left the Eagles went
- 11:59to the Doc That's why I went there. I don't
- 12:01know why. It must have been crazy because he was
- 12:03an old school kind of guy, just real intense. And
- 12:06we were playing the Raiders. So the Raiders were real
- 12:08laid back then. They were. They were just you know,
- 12:11they were good. Everybody wanted to play. Howie Long was there,
- 12:14all those great players and they were willing. Yeah, Matt
- 12:17Millen and they were all. They really won. They went
- 12:18to the Super Bowls, and so everybody want to play
- 12:20for the Raiders. So we go to play them in Japan.
- 12:22So we go over there for a week to practice
- 12:24with them, and so we come out and George Hill
- 12:27says to us in the huddle before we go nine
- 12:29on seven, which is a run drill, which means you're
- 12:31gonna you're gonna be hitting people. So we go in
- 12:34the huddle and he goes, we're gonna show them. We're
- 12:35gonna set the tone for the week, for the game.
- 12:37We're gonna but take him, smack him in the fade out.
- 12:39He's going through the all things. So the Raiders come out.
- 12:42First play, they run to play. We hit him in
- 12:44the face. They're like, yo, what are you guys doing.
- 12:46I'm just saying live this is like this is They
- 12:48don't practice like this. So they go back to the huddle.
- 12:51We come out again. Second play. Bamn, we smack them
- 12:53in the face again. So now they go back to
- 12:55the huddle. They sit there for ten minutes. They won't
- 12:58come out.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Are you serious?
- 13:00Speaker 3: So they said they thought they sent a message. So
- 13:03they come out to the ball again. We smack him
- 13:05in the face again. They go back and sit for
- 13:06fifteen minutes. So we had hibout. It was like a
- 13:09forty play period. I think we got five plays it
- 13:12because they weren't going to play like that. And that
- 13:14was George hill.
- 13:15Speaker 2: When you smack him in the face literally like I mean,
- 13:18I mean.
- 13:18Speaker 3: Well, no, Spike, I'm sorry. Face. We were taught that
- 13:22you you butt the guards in the face. So you
- 13:24butt them with your face masks. You never put your
- 13:25head down because that's your that's you break your neck.
- 13:28I mean that's you see guys nowadays going to tackle
- 13:31and they drop their heads. That's what when you The
- 13:33face mask was designed to dissipate the hit. So you
- 13:36hit the face mask, it dissipates out the back. Yeah,
- 13:39that's that's what it was designed for. So we were
- 13:41taught you butt him down the face because if you
- 13:43it's like a boxer. If you see a guy boxing
- 13:45and you he gets hit in the face, everything stops
- 13:47for a second. Same thing with alignment. If you hit
- 13:49him in the face, his feet stop. Now the inertia
- 13:52deteke that take get that guard to go or that
- 13:54tackle to move his feet again, that's he's never gonna
- 13:57catch you. That's called defeating the block. So you would
- 14:00defeat the block, then go to the ball. You see
- 14:02these guys now they just run to the ball. So
- 14:04that lineman still paid to block you, so he's gonna
- 14:07follow you. So those guys get there, they break down
- 14:10and all of a sudden the last minute say boom
- 14:11they get wiped out. Wow, because they never defeated the block.
- 14:14Speaker 4: Now, which of the linebackers coaches that you've had during
- 14:17your career do you feel helped you the most.
- 14:19Speaker 3: I would say probably George Hill. George Hill was a
- 14:21great coach when it came to technique. All you did
- 14:24was work on technique and fundamentals and how to defeat blocks,
- 14:29playoff blocks, go to the ball. Discipline, never over always
- 14:33knowing leverage, never over pursuing. Very beneficial. I mean, probably
- 14:38one of the best coaches that I had.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Wow. You heard the voice of Mike Reicherbach, former Eagle
- 14:43Dolphin and you were briefly with the forty nine ers.

- 17:49Speaker 1: We now return to Chiggy's and Beats for the Pro
- 17:52Football Report, presented by BCWSA once again. Here are your
- 17:57hosts from Inside the Birds, Adam Kaplan and Andrew did
- 18:02check O.
- 18:03Speaker 2: All right, everybody, welcome back to the Pro Football Report.
- 18:07I'm standing by BCWSA right here on fourteen ninety WBCB
- 18:12and one oh seven three FM and also seen live
- 18:14a WBCB sports dot Com. Guys, it's Adam Kaplan, Andrew
- 18:19de Checko and former Eagle Mike Reichenbach number fifty five.
- 18:23By the way, we're chicking pets here and Warrington right
- 18:27up six eleven. It's time now for this week's injury
- 18:30review brought to you by the attorneys at Begley, Carlin
- 18:33and Mandio, contacted today for a free consultation at two
- 18:38five eight six three six eight nine. That's two one
- 18:41five eight oh six three six eight nine. Mike, I
- 18:45got a question for you. What was your What was
- 18:48your toughest injury to deal with as a player.
- 18:51Speaker 3: Uh, pretty much every week you had, you would have bumps,
- 18:55some bruises, and you had to work through them because
- 18:56if you you know, back then, you had I think
- 18:59it was fifty forty eight guys per roster, so your
- 19:03your second team was as good as your first team.
- 19:05So I mean if you were off the field, somebody
- 19:07was gonna take your job. I mean, there was only
- 19:09twenty eight teams, but once you expand, you kind of
- 19:11dissipate that. But so I think the worst was we
- 19:15were playing the Giants up in the meadowlands and the
- 19:17whole pile fell on my ankle one time, and I
- 19:20heard crackling and crunching, and so you knew something was wrong.
- 19:24But back then, you they would they would kind of
- 19:27ice it and do the whole thing and elevate and
- 19:30you came back the next week, but I couldn't put
- 19:33weight on it. There was a lot of different leg
- 19:35injuries and things like that.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Tell us about Otho Davis.
- 19:39Speaker 3: Otho was was very interesting in his philosophy around.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Former athletic trainer.
- 19:44Speaker 3: People don't the athletic trainer, and pretty much when you
- 19:48went into the training room, you knew that everything was
- 19:51being recorded, so you their job was to get you
- 19:54back on the field, really to tell you the truth,
- 19:57and so they would they would try to get you
- 19:59back on the field because when you were injured, they
- 20:02could never release you. Once you stepped back on the field,
- 20:05they could release you. So there was a lot of
- 20:07ways of of they tried to get you back on
- 20:09the field. And if you weren't one hundred percent then
- 20:11you would get caught. So you but you had to play.
- 20:14And there was one injury where we were playing the
- 20:17Cowboys and Tony dor said had this quick screen and
- 20:20I had a man the man so I got out
- 20:21there and and the linemen aren't supposed to hit you
- 20:24before the ball gets there, but the guy cut me
- 20:25down on my knee and I came up and I
- 20:27couldn't feel my knee, so I had to get back
- 20:30to the huddle because I had to make the call,
- 20:31the signal call, and I could feel that it was
- 20:34you know, I just couldn't feel anything, so thinking, okay,
- 20:36So we got out of the it was the fourth down.
- 20:39So I go to the sign and said, oh, though
- 20:41my knee, I can't feel it. He goes, let me
- 20:43see it. So he jigg a little litle. He goes,
- 20:45it's a sprain. You're okay. So people say to me, now,
- 20:49was there was there a Was there a medical tent?
- 20:51I said, yeah, they would put the towel over you
- 20:54and they would stuff smelling salce up your nose, and
- 20:56that was the medical tent. So you get back on
- 20:58the field.
- 20:59Speaker 4: Now, while we're on the object of injuries, you obviously
- 21:01played a veteran stadium which is notoriously known for being
- 21:04a harsh surface for players to play on. Any memories
- 21:08of playing on that in terms of how it affected
- 21:10your body, well.
- 21:12Speaker 3: I mean, just for me to be there was a proage.
- 21:14I mean I didn't I was coming. Again, if you
- 21:16were to talked to any of the coaches coming up
- 21:18out of a little league to high school, if I
- 21:20would have thought they I would have made it to
- 21:22the NFL. None would have said that. I mean, my
- 21:24college coach thought I could. But so the field itself
- 21:28was just that it was turf. It was difficult because
- 21:31back then turf was was pretty much a carpet with
- 21:34a pad under it, so that pad, whenever it would
- 21:37get wet and cold, it would freeze, so it would
- 21:39be hard. It would be hard like rock. So and
- 21:42then you had to deal with the different seams and
- 21:45things for the for the baseball diamond and things like that.
- 21:47Guys guys hated to play here. Every team that would
- 21:50come in and say, why don't they redo this thing?
- 21:52Because if they'd hate it, paid play in here.
- 21:54Speaker 2: So during the regular season, where were you guys practice?
- 21:57Speaker 3: We would Originally we used to practice at JFK BEFO.
- 22:00They before they demolished it. They put it down and
- 22:02then they built the practice field in the corner of
- 22:05the parking lot up there a grass field that's where
- 22:08we'd and then they put the bubble up there. There
- 22:09was a bubble that we weather got bad, that's where
- 22:12we would go. So, yeah, that's where we would practice.
- 22:15Speaker 2: All right, let's turn our attention to the Eagles injury.
- 22:17So Andrew, you know that Dallas got it didn't play
- 22:19last week, right, and that was surve of an issue.
- 22:22What were your thoughts on on who filled in well?
- 22:24Speaker 4: On the first play of the game, Grant cal Katra
- 22:27whiffed on the block. There was a blitzing defensive back
- 22:29Jay when Watson, and it affected the play. Now on
- 22:32the bottom of the screen, aj Brown was streaking wide open,
- 22:35and Kevin Patulo today when he spoke Eagles offensive coordinator,
- 22:39he mentioned that, yeah, that was there. They had it
- 22:41dialed up, so that obviously impacted that. But I thought
- 22:44by and large, both Grant cal Katara and Kylon grants
- 22:46and that's not their forte They're not in line blockers.
- 22:49They're willing, but it didn't necessarily surface in terms of
- 22:53being able to help in the running game or anything
- 22:55like that. I thought Cameron Lattu, who was elevated from
- 22:58the practice squad first NFL game, played six snaps, had
- 23:01a really nice block two plays before Jalen Hurts punched
- 23:04it in from one yard out nine minutes they left
- 23:06in the fourth quarter, drove Charles a menaheue back into
- 23:10the end zone. So that might be a player that
- 23:12they try to find a role for. Because you can
- 23:14see that he sort of has taken he has a
- 23:17knack for it.
- 23:18Speaker 2: Jordan Davis will go to defense. Jordan Davis was he
- 23:21limped off a little bit with his leg. We'll see
- 23:22if they listened tomorrow on the injury report. And then
- 23:24the one that would concern me, Andrew is Jalen Carter.
- 23:28I know Fandrews asked this fanjer was asked to sitting
- 23:31in this press conference.
- 23:32Speaker 3: Carter.
- 23:33Speaker 2: A couple of times he's leaving the field holding his
- 23:35wrist or his hand. So now you guys get to
- 23:37watch a little practice, not very much. It's warm ups
- 23:40fifteen minutes. So how close can you get to actually
- 23:42look at that?
- 23:43Speaker 4: Well, I have this handy dandy iPhone, but I zoom
- 23:48in and it's almost like you got binocular. So I'm
- 23:50gonna try my best to track down Jalen Carter and
- 23:53see if I can I found able to gauge anything.
- 23:56And then, of course, the first injury report of the
- 23:58week will be released about five thirty.
- 23:59Speaker 2: All right, Mike, regular season practice, do you remember how
- 24:01long they would be?
- 24:03Speaker 3: Yeah, we're usually on the field about three hours in the.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Regular season two and a half. Who would they hit.
- 24:09Speaker 3: Oh yeah, matter of fact, this is crazy.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Matter of fact.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Matter of fact, if we would lose, we would be
- 24:15out in full pads on Friday.
- 24:18Speaker 2: And that's the light day, by the way, that's the light.
- 24:20Speaker 3: Yeah, we know we would be in full pads. So
- 24:22at the end of the game, if you were losing
- 24:23and you said and if the clock was winding down,
- 24:25you didn't care you were losing, you were like, oh,
- 24:26we got.
- 24:27Speaker 2: To be in full pets, right, and they would be
- 24:29a court martial. There would be fines.
- 24:31Speaker 4: Oh, that wouldn't ye Chargers if you did that. So
- 24:35Adam mentioned practice earlier, and Lehigh was a place that
- 24:39the Eagles used to practice. Of course now they're at Novacare.
- 24:42But when you were with the Eagles, Mike, you practice
- 24:45at west Chester University, which is very close to where
- 24:48I live right now. What are some of your recollections
- 24:51of practicing there.
- 24:52Speaker 3: Well, we yeah, we would go to camp there, so
- 24:54six weeks. Our camp was six weeks long, six weeks
- 24:58or two a day's So you'd have two week weeks
- 25:01with no games, and then four weeks we had four
- 25:03preseason games, and then four weeks with four weeks of
- 25:06practice full pads two a days. We stayed in the dorms,
- 25:12so it was a college dorm and you know you
- 25:15had the you know, the the window air conditioners to
- 25:18try and cool it down to normal students. The students
- 25:21there wouldn't get air conditioners, so they'd look at us
- 25:23and gore, those guys are here, they get the air conditioners.
- 25:25Speaker 2: We don't.
- 25:25Speaker 3: We don't get the air conditioners. So yeah, it was
- 25:28it was definitely. And then down we practiced on two
- 25:32fields there the game made game field, but not all
- 25:34the time. There was a lower field which was a
- 25:36practice field, which was down in a bowl, so no
- 25:38air got down in there, which coaches love. Players didn't
- 25:41like it too much. So but yeah, it was definitely
- 25:45an experience.
- 25:47Speaker 2: How would you recover from a game? What would you do?
- 25:50Because sports science came in much later, what would you
- 25:52do to recovery from each other?
- 25:53Speaker 3: Well, what we do is you had to come in
- 25:55right after the game to get treatment. So the biggest
- 25:58thing was you'd get you'd go into an ice bad
- 26:00and so that would get the swelling and get that
- 26:03under control, and then right away you had to stay
- 26:06there until you were They would do ultrasound, they would
- 26:10do all this stuff, you know, the equipment and things
- 26:12like that, but it was mainly it was ice, you know,
- 26:15elevate and if you needed it, they would send you
- 26:18down to the hospital to get you know, an iv
- 26:21of some type. The older guys didn't really know everything
- 26:25that was in that ivy, but you would get an
- 26:27ivy boy from.
- 26:31Speaker 2: By the way. For the Rams. You should say this
- 26:32because this could impact the matchup. A killer Witherspoon their
- 26:35best corner journeyman, but a decent player. He's done for
- 26:38at least probably six weeks to eight broken clavicle Andrew.
- 26:42Now Emmanuel Forbes, who who was a total bus for
- 26:46the Commanders. Yep, what are your thoughts at him? He'll
- 26:48be starting for the Rams when they faced the Eagles.
- 26:51Speaker 4: Well, it wouldn't surprise me, Adam if he still has
- 26:53nightmares about AJ Brown because AJ Brown imposed his will.
- 26:57I guess it was two three years ago now. But
- 27:00very small corner that I think that.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Well thin, right, he's stall but he's thin.
- 27:05Speaker 4: Yeah, he's very thin. So that that's an advantage for
- 27:08the Eagles if they're able to get AJ Brown matched
- 27:10up against them where he can out muscle them. So
- 27:12I think that's that's a clear advantage.
- 27:15Speaker 2: Yeah, for this matchup, Mike. When you look at the Rams,
- 27:19they are two and zero. Sean McVay a great coach.
- 27:22You actually were with the forty nine ers briefly. Was
- 27:26there anything going against the West Coast offense which a
- 27:28lot of teams are running. It's still very popular. Do
- 27:30you remember going against it?
- 27:32Speaker 3: Yeah, the forty nine ers actually with Joe Montanus your quarterback,
- 27:36and then he left and Steve Young took over, and
- 27:38they had that incredible receiver court and they had you know,
- 27:41Roger Craig in the backfield. I mean, you had weapons,
- 27:45and the offensive line was good, and your defense was good.
- 27:47They were just where they were one of those teams
- 27:49that they changed the league because the way they played.
- 27:52They played at a higher level that you know, they
- 27:55were a great team because they didn't make mistakes, like
- 27:58when the game was on the line, they didn't get
- 27:59stupid penalty when they you know, they had to make
- 28:01a play because they did everything situational. That was the
- 28:04first team I went to that only had one a
- 28:06day practices in camp. In camp shocking back, so they
- 28:11had one to day practice and then the second practice
- 28:14was all special teams, but everything was situational. So here's
- 28:18the difference between the forty nine ers when we would
- 28:20go to camp. When we went to camp that year,
- 28:22they did everything like they expected to be in a
- 28:24super Bowl. They met like they were going to the
- 28:26super Bowl. They would talk then they go, hey, when
- 28:28we get to the big game, this is what's going
- 28:29to happen. That's how they that's how they set that
- 28:32culture and it raised the bar. I mean, they actually
- 28:36had the people to do it. They were talented, very
- 28:38talented team.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Mike. One question on Buddy Ryan and obviously they didn't
- 28:43want a playoff game here. Why do you think he
- 28:44crashed and burned late? Why did he not make it?
- 28:46He was a head coach.
- 28:47Speaker 3: The biggest thing with Buddy was he put and there
- 28:53were good people around him, but he wanted loyal people
- 28:56rather than the best people, and so some of the
- 29:00coaching I think that it was subpar. And he was
- 29:04very defense focused. So he he he took his highest
- 29:08draft picks and put him all on defense and then
- 29:11he kind of took what was left and put it.
- 29:13Not at the offense was that, but he would always
- 29:15try to piece together the offense, and they they kind
- 29:19of they were pretty much, you know, run first down,
- 29:21run second down, throw third down. It was pretty basic
- 29:24offense and we never had that those big weapons until
- 29:27Randall came in. Yep, and Randall came in Randall Cunningham
- 29:31and just opened up the game as a quarterback.

- 32:40Speaker 1: Here are your hosts from Inside the Birds, Adam Kaplan
- 32:44and Andrew didcheck O.
- 32:47Speaker 2: All right, everyone, welcome back here. Listen to the Pro
- 32:49Football Report presented by BCWSA right here on fourteen ninety
- 32:53WBCB and one of seven three FM, and also scene
- 32:57live at wbcbsports dot com. It's Adam kap On, it
- 33:01entered Checko and former Egos linebacker Or I would say,
- 33:06as Vic Fanger would say, you're an ILB.
- 33:08Speaker 3: I LB inside. Yeah, always inside, never outside.
- 33:11Speaker 2: Right, that's right. Help me, by the way, so what
- 33:13did you what position do you play? In high school?
- 33:16Speaker 3: I was actually a defensive end, a tight end. Yeah,
- 33:19I was only about one hundred. I was about one
- 33:21hundred and ninety five pounds in.
- 33:23Speaker 2: Did you have a growth spurt? Yeah?
- 33:25Speaker 3: When I went to college, hit the weight room harder
- 33:28and they moved me the linebacker. So when I went
- 33:32to college, I started to be about two twenty five
- 33:35and then just went up from there. By my senior year,
- 33:37I was about two forty five.
- 33:39Speaker 2: Now you were a tight end an edge rusher in
- 33:43high school.
- 33:43Speaker 3: Yeah, defensive end kind of different in high school football
- 33:46back then, it wasn't much as much an edge rusher
- 33:49as if somebody had turned everything back inside.
- 33:51Speaker 2: Right right right? Boy, just going from both sides of
- 33:55the foot, was it really tough you mentally to go
- 33:57from offense to defense?
- 33:59Speaker 9: Not a that.
- 34:00Speaker 3: I mean, I enjoyed offense just because you could get
- 34:03out and catch the ball. I mean it was kind
- 34:05of different. I mean, I blocked, but they used me
- 34:07as a as a catching tight end because I because
- 34:09I could catch the ball. So it was kind of
- 34:11They didn't use tight ends a whole lot back then,
- 34:13so it was kind of a little different. So, yeah,
- 34:15that was that was an interesting experience with me. But
- 34:17I think I was more always a defensive player though,
- 34:20mindset more. I used to say to people, if you're
- 34:22a logical thinker, and you're and you're kind of cerebral,
- 34:25you're an offensive player. I said, if you're a junkyard dog,
- 34:28you gotta go play defense.
- 34:30Speaker 4: But now, Mike, you were part of a storied defense
- 34:33in Philadelphia, So I have to ask you about Reggie White,
- 34:37is there any stories that that that come to mind
- 34:39that you're able to share.
- 34:40Speaker 3: Reggie was was just was the real deal. He just
- 34:43was a He was a great guy, good husband, a
- 34:47man of God, just totally authentic. But he was always
- 34:51a kid at heart. So you remember the pre rap,
- 34:54the pre rap that you would put under your tape
- 34:56was red and it was like a foamy sub. He
- 34:59would rap his head in that and poke little eyeshole
- 35:01eye holes in it and come out like Spider Man.
- 35:05So he would come out all kinds of So he
- 35:06was a kid at heart, but a guy that just
- 35:09kind of brought the locker room together. Was it was
- 35:11a unifying guy that just was a great influence on
- 35:14the game.
- 35:15Speaker 4: Did you guys have a close relationship.
- 35:17Speaker 3: Yeah, it was interesting because over the years, I was
- 35:20on two different sides. Like I was one of the
- 35:21guys that was out, you know, hitting the streets and
- 35:23things like that. And it's funny because later in my career,
- 35:27and of course Reggie was was a pastor and so
- 35:30I had gotten given my life to Christ later in
- 35:33my career and a guy from our church came to Reggie.
- 35:35He was signing autographs and he said, hey, Mike, Greg
- 35:38gave his life to Christ. He's you know, he's a Christian.
- 35:40Comes to our church and Reggie stops signing. He looked
- 35:42up and he goes, yeah, right. So he called me
- 35:47up and he said, Mike, you're the last guy I
- 35:49thought would ever come to know Jesus as a savior.
- 35:51And I said, well, I said, they're still miracles. So
- 35:53he said, we used to use you in our Bible
- 35:55study what not to do? Really, so wow, he was.
- 35:58He was just a great guy. Yeah, he's a good man.
- 36:01Speaker 2: All right, guys, let's turn our attension to this week's game,
- 36:05and the Eagles will host the Rams on Sunday at
- 36:08one Eastern. It's time now for this week's Penworth Financial
- 36:12Keys to the Game. The Key to your financial future
- 36:14is at Penworth Financial. Call him today at two six
- 36:18seven nine nine seven four five oh three or visit
- 36:21Penworth dot com. All right, so Andrew, let's turn to you.
- 36:25So you got two two and zero teams. The Eagles
- 36:28have won all three games in Nick Sirianni's career against
- 36:31the Rams. And look, the the second game was in
- 36:33the snow. You were there in Philly. That was a
- 36:36fun game. They almost lost.
- 36:37Speaker 4: I mean, it was one of the best games I've
- 36:39ever covered. Really why, I just I just thought that
- 36:42the ambiance of the snow and then seeing Saquon run
- 36:46for that seventy eight yard touchdown where he's tapping his helmet,
- 36:49and it was just, I guess, a high intensity game.
- 36:52And then of course the snow being the backdrop certainly didn't.
- 36:55Speaker 2: Hurt Mike playing in the snow. I look, I was
- 36:59at the Lions Eagles game at twenty thirteen here when
- 37:02it was the first time in my career it was
- 37:04not on the forecast. The Lions didn't have the proper jack,
- 37:08which is ridiculous, but they didn't because it came out
- 37:10of nowhere. Did you like playing the snow? It was
- 37:13better than the heat.
- 37:14Speaker 3: Once I had a chance to play in Miami, it
- 37:17was so hot down and that was the reason why
- 37:19we beat teams because they would come down there and
- 37:21it was so hot and humid, big, big difference. So
- 37:25it was different. We go up to Buffalo when you
- 37:27when you practiced, didn't the heat all the time, and
- 37:29then you went to Buffalo and the snow, and that
- 37:31was that was a little difficult because you weren't as
- 37:33used to the snow, but not as much. I like
- 37:37playing in the mud at the snow because it slowed
- 37:39everybody down to my speed.
- 37:43Speaker 2: Say that, see, but again you were a tight end
- 37:45in high school. You could move.
- 37:46Speaker 3: Yeah, but I wasn't known for as a as a
- 37:48burner I mean to coming, I mean, you know, my
- 37:51speed wasn't the thing that was going to get me
- 37:53to make it in the NFL. It was. It was
- 37:55the ability to to Because.
- 37:57Speaker 2: I know that you didn't you didn't go to the combine,
- 37:59but did you work offer teams prior to the draft?
- 38:02Speaker 3: Well, the way it worked in Strausburg back then because
- 38:04we you didn't have social media, you didn't have all
- 38:06these things. So so if if a scout was coming
- 38:09by Strausburg and needed gas, he would pull in and go, oh,
- 38:12there's a college there, let's go check him out and
- 38:14see if they So it was kind of like even
- 38:16if you worked out, you know, you gotta you might
- 38:19have just got done doing squats and they would call
- 38:20you up from your office and go, hey, there's a
- 38:22scout here to want you to run. You're like, are
- 38:24you kidding? So that was about it. We got to
- 38:27there was there was combined coaches that they would cover
- 38:29like three or four teams, and then that's the guys
- 38:32that will work you out. Did you have an agent
- 38:35when I first came in, Yeah, that I had a
- 38:36guy named Lloyd Remick.
- 38:38Speaker 2: He was just what he represented me for like like
- 38:41six weeks.
- 38:42Speaker 3: Yeah, well he was. He was. He was a guy
- 38:44that my brother in law knew who was was an attorney,
- 38:46but he was. He had two of them guys that
- 38:48were on the Eagles then, which was ray Ellis and
- 38:51and Greg Brown, and he got them big, big contracts.
- 38:55And but then I found out the reason he got
- 38:57him is because he knew the the owners Leonard To's
- 39:00his daughter, how about that inside And he was a
- 39:04great agent. I mean he was one.
- 39:06Speaker 2: He was.
- 39:06Speaker 3: But he had big stars. He had, you know, Grover Washington,
- 39:09He had a lot of big celebrities and hit boxers
- 39:11and he just yeah, for a free agent guy, he
- 39:15just it just was he had you know, it was.
- 39:17I was a guy you had to work for because
- 39:19you had to go in and negotiate and do all that.
- 39:21So I had then a guy named Jimmy Solana.
- 39:23Speaker 2: Who was just just passed away the nicest guy in
- 39:25the world.
- 39:26Speaker 3: Nicest guy in the world, great agent good Man, worked
- 39:28hard for you.
- 39:29Speaker 2: Yeah and right. So we got the game on Sunday
- 39:31here one and one Eastern game and I love it. Yeah,
- 39:35for US reporters, we love it, Mike. Did they have
- 39:38evening games? Do they have like the night games?
- 39:40Speaker 3: Back in the back then what they had was they
- 39:42had the Sunday night. You would have Sunday night kind
- 39:45of game, but you only had Monday night. There was
- 39:47no Thursday night. It was Sunday, you know, one and four,
- 39:50and they might have a night game, but then it
- 39:51was Monday night. That was it. That Monday night was
- 39:53the big one.
- 39:53Speaker 4: Now you have a game pretty much every night, every night,
- 39:56every night.
- 39:57Speaker 2: Can you imagine playing on the day after Thanksgiving Black Friday?
- 40:01That's strange to me.
- 40:02Speaker 3: Yeah. We we played a couple well, we had to
- 40:04play a couple of games on Thanksgiving just because of
- 40:07the Cowboys were always on.
- 40:10Speaker 2: Yeah, did you win? Did you win?
- 40:12Speaker 3: We beat them to one year down in Dallas. That
- 40:14was the the That wasn't good because it turned it
- 40:17almost turned into a big fight. Well Buddy, but Buddy,
- 40:21Buddy was right before Thanksgiving. Buddy was down at a
- 40:24restaurant in Philadelphia and almost he choked.
- 40:26Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, they.
- 40:28Speaker 3: Had to do the heimlich maneuver, made fun of him.
- 40:30I remember we went down there and they were they
- 40:33were just throwing big chunks of meat at us because
- 40:35we came out onto the field smokes.
- 40:38Speaker 2: By the way, did you have any idea how big
- 40:39the rivalry with the Cowboys sports when you came here.
- 40:41Speaker 3: Yeah, because I'm from Bethlehem, so you knew. You knew
- 40:44the big rivalry. And that's the thing that I think
- 40:46you lose now because guys back then used to stay
- 40:48their whole careers with one team. I mean, you knew
- 40:51the rivalries because you pretty much stayed with them for
- 40:53a long time. Then free agency came in, and now
- 40:55guys are moving every couple of years and they don't
- 40:57even realize that the teams, you know, the rivalries and
- 41:00things like that.
- 41:01Speaker 2: So all right, Andrew, let's get to this game. So Sunday,
- 41:04it's gonna be warm. The early forecast is in the seventies,
- 41:07nothing like nineties in Kansas City last week, but so
- 41:10we should have good weather baring a change again. One
- 41:12Eastern game early, which is good for everybody all concerned
- 41:15So how do you see this matchup.
- 41:17Speaker 4: I think it's gonna be a big Saquon Barkley game.
- 41:19Saquon obviously had a lot of success last season rushing
- 41:22against the Rams, and that is the Eagles bread and
- 41:25butter right now. Now there are gonna have they should,
- 41:28I should say have some opportunities to really work the
- 41:30secondary because you mentioned a Kello Witherspoon won't be there.
- 41:33Emmanuel Forbes is a player who they should have success again.
- 41:37So if they're trying to get their passing game on, uh,
- 41:39start to get that rolling, that would be a good
- 41:41opportunity to do so. But I really like this Rams
- 41:43defense at them a lot of young players. They they
- 41:46play with tenacity, They float to the football with urgency.
- 41:49Jared Versus is a nice player that they have. So
- 41:52I'm curious to see if they what they've learned since
- 41:55the previous you know, having faced them twice last season.
- 41:57Speaker 2: Mike, when you when you face a team a certain
- 41:59amount of time, is it kind of like, okay, we
- 42:01kind of know them, Like how do you feel about
- 42:03when there's like a sort of a rematch, which was
- 42:05with the Rams from last season?
- 42:07Speaker 3: Well, I think they the Eagles have to play their game.
- 42:10I mean, you you prepare, you do everything you can.
- 42:12I mean there's so much that changes the game nowadays
- 42:15because of against expansion and injuries, injuries, like you guys
- 42:20are covering the injury report. That changes the game drastically
- 42:23because in a lot of respects some teams that once
- 42:27you go to the second string guy is not as
- 42:30good as the first string guy. That was an argued
- 42:33day that second string was almost as good as the starter.
- 42:35So you knew you had to keep playing because if
- 42:37you didn't, he was going to take your job. And
- 42:40I think you know, injuries are big. I think that
- 42:43the Eagles have the dominant They can control the game.
- 42:47I mean, they can run the football, control the clock.
- 42:50They had the front line, it's it's and the defense
- 42:52now is playing well. They're attacking. I mean they went
- 42:55after the Chiefs this pat You could see the difference.
- 42:57I think they have to keep the same mindset going
- 42:59again the Rams, go after them and make them make plays,
- 43:03you know, blitz them and and go after them. I
- 43:06think so I think they I think they'll they'll they'll
- 43:09they'll play a game different. You have to change it up,
- 43:12that's what that's these guys coaches get big, big, big money.
- 43:15Speaker 2: For so speaking of that, Andrew, I was stunned. Seven
- 43:18blitzes from Fandrio in the first half. I think eleven total. Yeah,
- 43:22I like, this is not this is not what Vic does.
- 43:24What are your thoughts on that?
- 43:25Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 43:26Speaker 4: And he was asked today about why was there such
- 43:29a star contrast compared to the Super Bowl. He said, well,
- 43:31we didn't need them back in the game in February.
- 43:34We needed them, you know, on Sunday because you have
- 43:37to be more aggressive. To me, it suggested that they
- 43:41didn't have a whole ton of uh, they didn't think
- 43:44a whole lot of the skill set players that the
- 43:46skill players that the Chiefs had, and so you saw
- 43:49a much more attack style defense from Vic Fangio.
- 43:52Speaker 2: Oh, you guys said it best, changing it up. That
- 43:54was our Keys of the Game, presented by Penworth Financial.

- 48:04the Birds and at number fifty five Eagles linebacker from
- 48:09let me see eighty four to eighty nine, was that correct?
- 48:11Or eighty eight, eighty nine, eighty nine? Okay, okay. Mike
- 48:15Reichenbach and Mike played at East Strouds. Now did they
- 48:17called East Stroutsburg State back then? No?
- 48:20Speaker 3: We changed to a university then, Oh, oh big time.
- 48:24I call it the Ivy League of the Poconoes.
- 48:27Speaker 4: So I have to ask you, Mike, going from East Strausburg,
- 48:30a Division two school going to the NFL. That's a
- 48:32big leap. But what was your mentality in trying to
- 48:35establish that staying power initially?
- 48:37Speaker 3: Well, you're right, I mean, I mean the Pennsylvania Conference
- 48:40at that time Division two was good football. I mean
- 48:42we had some guys, but you didn't have the back
- 48:44then it was it was. It was a far reached
- 48:47most of they there was so many Division one teams,
- 48:49of course they would hit them first. Division two was
- 48:51kind of looked down on, only because every week they
- 48:54didn't think you played in front of that level of
- 48:56talent every week in and week out. I mean, as
- 49:00you want, you had to be pretty much you're going
- 49:02against the better, you know, the best of the in
- 49:04the country. So but there had to be you know,
- 49:08it was the hard work that you did prepare, preparing
- 49:11for the camp. You know, once you you got there,
- 49:13you had to have the confidence that you did everything
- 49:15you could do to compete at that level. I mean,
- 49:18really it it. You know, we we did go against
- 49:21bigger guys in Division two, but maybe not at the
- 49:23same size as some of the guys you saw in camp.
- 49:25But it was all technique, it really was. I mean
- 49:27that's what George hill ingrained into us. He said, it
- 49:30doesn't matter how big this guy is when you hit
- 49:32when if you butt him in the face, you're going
- 49:33to stop his feet. But you got to do it
- 49:34the right way.
- 49:35Speaker 2: Mike, you talked about earlier. So you at one point
- 49:38you were two fifty, you dropped down two thirty, did
- 49:40you like. Obviously, being lighter is a good thing usually,
- 49:43but some players feel like they're you know what, I'm
- 49:45too light man. How did you feel like you played
- 49:48when you were when.
- 49:48Speaker 3: You lost all the Well, it was different because the
- 49:50defense was different. You weren't taken again, you weren't head
- 49:53you weren't butting guards face to face. Thirty four year
- 49:56lined up right in front of them, and that's your gap.
- 49:57You got to fill that hole in a fourth forty
- 50:00six you had to tackle, but they but the way
- 50:03they blocked you was totally different because you had all
- 50:05those defensive linemen covering the linemen and you were supposed
- 50:08to flow to the football, So different type of mentality
- 50:11had to go, be able to go more sideline the
- 50:13sideline instead of just button up. But again, it was
- 50:16mostly technique and as long as you could keep your technique,
- 50:19you could take somebody on like that. And it's just
- 50:21working out in the weight room.
- 50:23Speaker 4: Earlier, you mentioned the forty nine ers culture that you
- 50:25were exposed to. Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni has established
- 50:30quite a culture here in Philadelphia. Would have been your
- 50:32impressions of how he's of how he's performed over the
- 50:35last four seasons.
- 50:36Speaker 3: I think he's grown as a head coach. I think
- 50:40you know a lot of things what you see. And
- 50:42I learned this from from good coaches that I that
- 50:44coached me. They would always say to you, like Don Shulo,
- 50:47they would never be your buddy because once they lowered
- 50:51yourself to the once you lower yourself to their level
- 50:54and you become their buddy, lose the locker room. And
- 50:57you've seen it over and over again with coaches that
- 50:59try to, you know, become the guy's buddy. And kind
- 51:02of because someday Don Jule used to say, listen, some
- 51:05day I'm gonna I'm gonna might have to cut you.
- 51:07So they knew that, so they kind of kept that
- 51:10separation and I think Nick has grown in that somewhat.
- 51:14I think is you know, when you first get that job,
- 51:15you have that passion and emotion is different than passion.
- 51:20Emotions kind of get you yelling at the fans like
- 51:23you saw early on. That passion is more of you
- 51:27have a it's a control the you know you're passionate
- 51:30because you The big thing with I say with head
- 51:32coaches now is that you have to be an administrator
- 51:36and a motivator administrator, meaning you got to keep everybody pointing,
- 51:40You got to keep everybody focused, you know, and then
- 51:42you've got to motivate them. And you can't do that
- 51:44if you're down at their level. You got to have
- 51:46that level to rise above that and say, hey, listen,
- 51:49we're going in a direction. And if you Belichick was
- 51:51the best at it, I mean, Belichick said, hey, we're
- 51:53going to win and we're getting to the super Bowl.
- 51:55You want to be a part of it, then here,
- 51:57act like grow up, act like a man, and and
- 52:00and play football, do your job and and we'll have
- 52:03no problem.
- 52:04Speaker 2: Like a guy you played with was quite the man,
- 52:06and he's was. We know Seth Jordan pretty well. Seth
- 52:10Jordner is one of these guys I think should be
- 52:12in the Hall of Fame. What kind of player was he?
- 52:13Speaker 3: Yeah, he was a great player. I mean he when
- 52:16he came in and it's actually funny with his rookie year,
- 52:20he buddy cut him and then brought him back. I
- 52:23forgot about it. And so we knew Seth had a talent.
- 52:27I mean he just was he could move. He was
- 52:29a big guy, but he could he could he could
- 52:31put pressure on the quarterback, had an intensity about him,
- 52:34played the game with passion. Was one of those guys
- 52:37that stepped into a role and just and the forty
- 52:40six really benefited him, and it just he just honed
- 52:44his skills and worked hard. He was a good player.
- 52:46Speaker 4: What was the dynamic like between you two and the communication.
- 52:49Speaker 3: Well, it was always good because I mean, you you
- 52:52have as a as a linebacker and core, you have
- 52:55to kind of work together. I mean if you don't,
- 52:57because you would kind of you know, keep it encourage
- 53:00everybody and and Buddy dependent on the linebackers to be
- 53:03the guys that would take control of the defense because
- 53:06they were kind of central to all what was going on.
- 53:09So you had to stay in that tight knit type
- 53:12of relationship with guys. But again, at the end of
- 53:16the day, it's an individual sport. Everybody says, a shreme
- 53:19sport because at the end of the day, if you
- 53:20don't play well and you still win the game. If
- 53:23you don't play well, you're the guy getting cut. So
- 53:25so it's it's one of those things. But definitely had
- 53:28a you know, a bond between the linebackers.
- 53:32Speaker 2: So Andrew, I know, one of the things you do
- 53:34for us you're to check out daily, so and you
- 53:37file a quick report about what you learn, what you're
- 53:40hearing and all that. So today we had the press conference.
- 53:43Every Tuesday in the NFL, a lot of coaches and
- 53:46coordinators talk on Tuesdays. Anything interesting come out of them today?
- 53:50Speaker 4: Yeah, Fic van Jail sort of offered up when asked
- 53:52about Jay when Carter that he needs to round into
- 53:55shape a little bit. And that's something that really struck
- 53:57me watching him in training camp. To my eye, I
- 54:01was like, ah, you know, he's still making plays, but
- 54:03it doesn't quite look like he's in the shape that
- 54:05he was last season. Now, he didn't play in the opener,
- 54:07of course, and he doesn't play the full complement of
- 54:09snaps in practice, but I thought that it was interesting
- 54:12that he offered it up. And he played eighty percent
- 54:14of the defensive snaps against the Chiefs, So naturally, the
- 54:18more that he plays that that really I mean, and
- 54:20he was making an impact in that game. So the
- 54:21more that he plays and Vic didn't seem he seems
- 54:24to think that it's gonna kind of work itself out soon.
- 54:27Speaker 2: Mike. Last year's team, Andrew and I would go to
- 54:30training camp, I have them somewherew what were they do?
- 54:33They have fourteen wins? Thirteen wins last year fourteen fourteen
- 54:36to three. I get full sometimes how to go to
- 54:39these cap I usually go on a training camp tours.
- 54:40Sometimes are right, sometimes I'm wrong. I thought they'd be good.
- 54:43But it's so hard to tell you as a player,
- 54:46when you would be a camp, did you kind of know, Okay,
- 54:48I think we're gonna be the really good not so good?
- 54:50Could you tell how good your teams were when you
- 54:52were there?
- 54:52Speaker 3: You could tell as you got went through camp. I
- 54:54mean because a lot of guys, I mean back then
- 54:56again different philosophy, there was no guaranteed contracts. I mean
- 54:59there was, I should say there was minimal guaranteed contract
- 55:02Your big guys were the guys that had guarantees. Everybody
- 55:05else was proind of a one way contract, right, So
- 55:07you're looking at making the team and so like I
- 55:10can just tell you this. My first year when I
- 55:12came in the league, there was thirty linebackers for seven positions,
- 55:15thirty thirty, and so they would bring one hundred and
- 55:19twenty five guys to camp and then they would whittle
- 55:23it down and so you know, your main goal was, Okay,
- 55:26I gotta I gotta make the team. I gotta stay healthy,
- 55:29stay out of the tub, don't make mental mistakes. And
- 55:31then as camp would go on and you'd start to
- 55:33see the dynamics starting to come together. As they would
- 55:36go through the cuts, you could see what Yeah, you
- 55:39could tell watching film, you can tell if you're going
- 55:41to beat that team or not.
- 55:42Speaker 4: Now, what was the cutdown process? Like did they knock
- 55:45on the door?
- 55:45Speaker 6: Oh?
- 55:46Speaker 3: Yeah, knock on the door. Yeah, And the first thing
- 55:48in the morning they knock on the door. We call
- 55:49them the turk. The turk would come and you they
- 55:53get your playbook and once you knew that you were
- 55:55you were cut Andrew.
- 55:57Speaker 2: You know, it's incredible. Mike McCartney, who was Kirk Cousin's agent, Yeah,
- 56:00he was the turk for the Eagles. He was the
- 56:02pro director. Really, yeah, he was the one. It's so
- 56:05crazy because he's now when an agent, big time. Mike's a
- 56:07big dad's bib, the late Bill McCartney, the Colorado away coach.
- 56:11Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 56:12Speaker 2: I don't know how you do it, like how you
- 56:13go from that. And obviously it's empathy because I was
- 56:16on the broth of pro and on the college side.
- 56:18But were you ever around Mike when the player got
- 56:22that knock on the door?
- 56:23Speaker 3: Yeah, my roommate did, so we were a roommate. He came,
- 56:27we came out of East Strausburg. He was a wide receiver.
- 56:29He was he was a free agent as well. They
- 56:31signed him because we had a real dynamic offense. We
- 56:33scored a lot of points and he had a lot
- 56:35of catches. A good player, but didn't have that speed,
- 56:39you know. Yeah, so when he the Turk game, we
- 56:42knew he always knew when it was coming. So you
- 56:44never slept, and so you're not going to do I said,
- 56:47I said, Scott, you got to get it. So Scott
- 56:49when he said, Scott gets your playbook, and I was,
- 56:51I had to feel bad, but I was like it
- 56:53wasn't big.
- 56:54Speaker 4: Exactly what but you say you never slept, So it
- 56:56would happen at any hour.
- 56:57Speaker 3: Well, they would come first thing in the morning. You'd
- 57:01hear him come down the hole. You hear the knocks
- 57:03come down the hole, right And I had the last
- 57:06room on the right hand side, so it was like
- 57:07I had to listen all the way down the hall
- 57:10and wait for the knock. But that's tough.
- 57:12Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it's a tough deal, guys. All right, So
- 57:14this is the Pro Football Report and WBCB it's Adam
- 57:18Kaplan Andrew Checho. Next week we'll be in Marlton, New Jersey,
- 57:21Chicken Peetz. Tonight we're in Warrington, and Andrew be you
- 57:24and Jeff Most sure that's right, looking forward to that. Yeah,
- 57:27so mine likewise, Uh so we're here every Tuesday at
- 57:31the Chickies and Peats usually Warrington. We'll be at Roosevelt Boulevard.
- 57:35Later we were at Parks you know, last week. Every
- 57:38Tuesday six to seven pm. You could also listen to
- 57:41WBCB sports dot com and next week it'll be an
- 57:45hour show of course, and we will review that game. Andrew.
- 57:49I know you know we're not gonna pick who's gonna
- 57:50win or lose so Friday, Mike, but I'll tell you what.
- 57:53I think it's gonna be a great game on Sunday
- 57:55against the Rams. What are your thoughts?
- 57:57Speaker 3: I would think the way the Eagles are playing right now,
- 57:59and they they again, they seem very disciplined, they seem
- 58:02to be you know, they have the confidence, they they
- 58:05know the guys that the playmakers are stepping up, they're
- 58:08making plays, and even the guys, like you had said,
- 58:11the guys that are filling in are actually coming in
- 58:13and contributing. So that's a hard dynamic once you get
- 58:16that that that confidence. But again it's it's all depending
- 58:20on what team comes out of the locker room.
- 58:22Speaker 1: You know.
- 58:22Speaker 3: It's there's a lot going on in these guys' lives
- 58:24that take the distractions and the things, and that was
- 58:27kind of managing the off field stuff is important as well.
- 58:30Speaker 2: So all right, Mike reraicheback, thank you so much. Andrew
- 58:33de Check, thank you so much. We'll see you next week.
- 58:35You're listening to w BCB and the Pro Football Report.
