- 1:25Speaker 4: What's up everybody? Hello, Hello, cold o ball, cold open.
- 1:29Speaker 4: I'm not used to the cold open.
- 1:31Speaker 2: We have nothing well because they know we react. We
- 1:33Speaker 2: spend like five minutes reacting in the nonsense, and this
- 1:36Speaker 2: way we actually get the show on the road. That's true,
- 1:39Speaker 2: that's true. It's probably for the best, probably probably for
- 1:42Speaker 2: the best, and we don't get to do a two
- 1:44Speaker 2: weeks ago we did shapes. Last week we did Schrodinger's Cat.
- 1:47Speaker 2: We don't get to do like a lesson. Well, maybe
- 1:50Speaker 2: maybe that'll come later in the show. Maybe that'll come.
- 1:52Speaker 2: I I have a little bit of a lesson.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Okay, it's unsolicited, though.
- 1:57Speaker 2: It's an unsolicited lesson? Is it that we shouldn't get
- 2:00Speaker 2: a haircut the same week because it's gonna look like
- 2:02Speaker 2: we did it on purpose? I didn't know that that happened,
- 2:05Speaker 2: but I got called out that earlier. Taylor Kyle's called
- 2:07Speaker 2: us out for that. Well, why we just name names.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Taylor Kyle's called.
- 2:10Speaker 3: You out for it, called us out for it.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Okay, all right, fair enough.
- 2:14Speaker 4: But before we get into the show, Hey, Patriots fans,
- 2:16Speaker 4: if you want to see Toyota's best offers, including those
- 2:19Speaker 4: not seen on TV, go to buy a Toyota dot
- 2:21Speaker 4: com Tyota's official website for deals from the official vehicle
- 2:25Speaker 4: of the New England Patriots. Toyota Let's go places and
- 2:28Speaker 4: easy to drink, easy to enjoy, but like the official
- 2:31Speaker 4: beer sponsor of the.
- 2:32Speaker 2: New England Patriots. Sorry, what's this is an unsolicited lesson? Okay,
- 2:38Speaker 2: and totally just my my thoughts on the state of
- 2:42Speaker 2: the Patriots right now.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Okay, which.
- 2:46Speaker 2: If you turn on.
- 2:46Speaker 4: Your station, even our station, things are not going so
- 2:51Speaker 4: hot right now.
- 2:51Speaker 3: No, they're not around here. I would say that's an
- 2:53Speaker 3: accurate assessment.
- 2:54Speaker 2: At one and six.
- 2:56Speaker 4: But the one thing that I come back to, because
- 2:59Speaker 4: this is a football show, and I hope I said
- 3:03Speaker 4: this when Bill was here, because I I this is
- 3:06Speaker 4: truly how I feel. I could care less about press conferences.
- 3:11Speaker 4: I could care less about what is said a press conferences.
- 3:14Speaker 4: I could care like that's why we were just talking.
- 3:16Speaker 4: For people that just continue to listen. We're talking on
- 3:18Speaker 4: unfiltered about some of the comments by the receivers and
- 3:21Speaker 4: this that the other. I just don't care. I don't
- 3:23Speaker 4: care about that kind of stuff. Who's talking, who's saying this,
- 3:27Speaker 4: who's saying that? You know, the coach this the coach
- 3:29Speaker 4: that I just don't don't care. What I care about
- 3:32Speaker 4: is what goes on on the field and the results
- 3:36Speaker 4: of what happens on the field.
- 3:37Speaker 2: And the way that I view.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Right now with this team is I'm not one hundred
- 3:43Speaker 4: percent sure that girod Mayo knows what type of head coach,
- 3:48Speaker 4: he wants to be. And when I look at head coaches,
- 3:51Speaker 4: and we have this conversation all the time. When when
- 3:53Speaker 4: I look at head coaches, I put them in two.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Buckets, khakis and non khakis.
- 3:57Speaker 4: Correct, I put them in the culture builders or for
- 4:03Speaker 4: just for funny personality hires, right, Like, who are the
- 4:06Speaker 4: guys that just get hired because they're absolute leaders? They
- 4:12Speaker 4: are just leaders of men. They they rally the troops,
- 4:16Speaker 4: Their players would run through walls for them. They have
- 4:18Speaker 4: total buy in.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Well those types of guys if I can borrow from Madden. Yes,
- 4:24Speaker 2: So when you set up like when you create a
- 4:26Speaker 2: coach on Madden, right, yeah, you can create one of
- 4:29Speaker 2: three three options for what your coach is. Yes, and
- 4:32Speaker 2: like it sets up like different abilities you have whatever.
- 4:35Speaker 2: But like I always thought, at least in the three
- 4:37Speaker 2: they give you a pretty good example. You have tacticians yep,
- 4:41Speaker 2: motivators in developers And those might not be the exact terms,
- 4:45Speaker 2: but it's basically like the motivational coaches. Like you get
- 4:49Speaker 2: a boost And I feel dumb using mad for this,
- 4:51Speaker 2: but I think it sets up your point.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Well, you get a boost to like team.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Chemistry, player morale right, like, like you lose less composure
- 4:59Speaker 2: if you like go on the road, things like that.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Strategist as you get a boost or sorry, developers like
- 5:05Speaker 2: you get boost when it comes to the draft, you
- 5:06Speaker 2: get a boost to like player traits, and then strategist
- 5:09Speaker 2: is like you get a boost using certain plays or whatever.
- 5:11Speaker 2: So so I.
- 5:12Speaker 4: Don't I don't necessarily. Developer to me, is not a category.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Not anymore it was. But I want to think you
- 5:20Speaker 3: see less coaches doing that.
- 5:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I want to keep it in two separate categories,
- 5:23Speaker 4: just for simplicity's sake too. So culture builders, yeah, guys
- 5:28Speaker 4: that I would point too. I think I have they
- 5:31Speaker 4: are head coaches in this league because they built extremely
- 5:35Speaker 4: strong relationships and cultures. Dan Campbell in Detroit, I think
- 5:39Speaker 4: is the number one guy in this right now, mainly
- 5:42Speaker 4: because Pete Carroll doesn't have a job, right I have.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Pete Carroll to me was like the guy for this right.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Dan Campbell is the guy now.
- 5:49Speaker 3: Can I just cut?
- 5:50Speaker 2: I think there's a difference people are gonna jump to, like, oh,
- 5:52Speaker 2: so players coach, Like, I think there's a difference between
- 5:54Speaker 2: being a player's coach and being a culture builder. Mike
- 5:56Speaker 2: Tomans a culture builder.
- 5:57Speaker 4: So I was going to get to top so Dan
- 6:00Speaker 4: Campbell to me, I was you watch like Detroit's postgame
- 6:05Speaker 4: locker room sound footage and stuff like, I'm not the
- 6:09Speaker 4: biggest Dan Campbell guy. You know that because I'm going
- 6:11Speaker 4: where I'm going with this, But I would run through
- 6:14Speaker 4: a brick wall for that guy.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Like that guy is just he.
- 6:17Speaker 4: Is one hundred percent locked in in terms of that
- 6:20Speaker 4: type of stuff. I think Mike Tomlin's another really strong
- 6:23Speaker 4: example of a great, great culture builder, just one of
- 6:27Speaker 4: those guys that you hear stories of Steelers players talking
- 6:31Speaker 4: about tom Win like he's this legendary motivator, uh leader,
- 6:38Speaker 4: just father figure in a lot of ways for some
- 6:40Speaker 4: of the younger guys.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Just a really really great leader of men. Then in
- 6:47Speaker 2: the other category is my group is the is the
- 6:51Speaker 2: Khaki guys, right, the strategists as you put it with Madden,
- 6:54Speaker 2: h the Kyle Shanahan's, the Sean mcvays. Obviously Bill when
- 6:59Speaker 2: he was coaching.
- 7:00Speaker 3: I feel like Bill supersedes this.
- 7:02Speaker 4: I Bill built to me, though, what I'm getting at
- 7:06Speaker 4: is built to me. His ultimate trump card was X's
- 7:11Speaker 4: and O's.
- 7:12Speaker 2: I but I don't know about that Bill did such
- 7:14Speaker 2: a good job, Like you look at those peak teams
- 7:16Speaker 2: in the culture he built, and I'm talking about going
- 7:19Speaker 2: back with guys like Teddy Bruski right in that and
- 7:22Speaker 2: the the accountability and the I know people roll their
- 7:24Speaker 2: eyes at this point and do your job, but there's
- 7:27Speaker 2: weight behind that.
- 7:28Speaker 3: No I I let's let's put it in a different
- 7:31Speaker 3: Bill Bill is his own fine thing. Bill supersedes that.
- 7:34Speaker 4: I also would say that another guy that's trending towards
- 7:36Speaker 4: superseding this is Andy Reid. But Andy Reid started as
- 7:40Speaker 4: a strategist and so it has turned into a culture guy.
- 7:44Speaker 2: I was gonna say, if there's one guy in the
- 7:45Speaker 2: league that supersedes it, it's Harbor. I think Harbaugh is
- 7:50Speaker 2: a culture guy. Uh Jim not to be clear, Baltimore Jim,
- 7:54Speaker 2: not John So John not Jack John. How was getting
- 7:57Speaker 2: mixed up the one that's actually been an NFL coach
- 7:59Speaker 2: and the one that didn't get run out of college.
- 8:00Speaker 4: I think John is a culture builder. He's a special
- 8:04Speaker 4: teams coach, worked his way up in that respect.
- 8:08Speaker 2: I guess maybe I'll give him credit to the staff
- 8:10Speaker 2: like what they do, and I guess it's not him,
- 8:12Speaker 2: but like what they do offensively is so unique and
- 8:15Speaker 2: so special and the way they were able to put
- 8:17Speaker 2: that around. Lamar definitely came in as a culture builder
- 8:19Speaker 2: and you know, maybe credit goes to Greg Roman for that,
- 8:22Speaker 2: but him having the foresight to hire Greg Roman and
- 8:25Speaker 2: allow him to build what he built. And I know
- 8:26Speaker 2: it's not Greg Roman anymore, but get my point. That's
- 8:29Speaker 2: why I would say, like, they do some very unique
- 8:31Speaker 2: things schematically, and so I I that's the one guy.
- 8:34Speaker 3: But he's not Bill. Nobody's Bill.
- 8:36Speaker 2: But like Bill's not Bill is all of the above.
- 8:38Speaker 2: To me, Bill is culture, schematic player, developer like he is,
- 8:44Speaker 2: He's full package.
- 8:45Speaker 4: Sure, So my point is bringing this up just to
- 8:48Speaker 4: bring this all home.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Well, you know, it's his football philosophy stuff. I could
- 8:51Speaker 3: do this all day.
- 8:52Speaker 4: I am still unsure of which bucket Gerrod Mayo falls
- 8:59Speaker 4: into and wants to fall into, because if he he
- 9:05Speaker 4: was sold to us when he was hired by mister
- 9:08Speaker 4: Kraft as a great people person, as somebody that motivator,
- 9:14Speaker 4: a motivator that relates to young the young generation, that
- 9:19Speaker 4: relates to today's player that played in the league. That
- 9:23Speaker 4: is just one of these guys that guys gravitate towards
- 9:26Speaker 4: like the culture side of things. But I look at
- 9:30Speaker 4: Patriots culture in the early going and look at one
- 9:34Speaker 4: and six. Was Dan Campbell's culture in Detroit fantastic? Probably
- 9:39Speaker 4: not right, just to be fair, But I look at
- 9:41Speaker 4: the Patriots culture and I say, well, I don't see
- 9:46Speaker 4: him building that here, Like I don't see a great
- 9:50Speaker 4: culture forming here. When you think of great culture, you
- 9:54Speaker 4: don't think of all of the jabs we've had in
- 9:57Speaker 4: the media from the players in the locker room over
- 9:59Speaker 4: the last week plus, more like going all the way
- 10:03Speaker 4: back probably to San Francisco to now, we've had this
- 10:06Speaker 4: going on with guys calling out, guys calling out teammates,
- 10:10Speaker 4: calling out each other, you know guys, Yeah, all that
- 10:14Speaker 4: kind of stuff. Obviously after the game on Sunday in
- 10:18Speaker 4: London we have we're playing soft right like that That that,
- 10:22Speaker 4: to me is not something that a Dan Campbell, a
- 10:26Speaker 4: Mike Tomlin, a one of those types of guys that's
- 10:30Speaker 4: trying to set a culture and an identity to his
- 10:33Speaker 4: football team would have necessarily done. And the other side
- 10:38Speaker 4: of it is that when I watch film and I
- 10:42Speaker 4: watch this team play, I don't watch them on either
- 10:46Speaker 4: side of the ball right now, and think that they
- 10:49Speaker 4: are schematically advanced or ahead of the curve, like they're
- 10:52Speaker 4: doing something offensively or defensively that is innovative or fresh
- 10:59Speaker 4: or exciting or anything of that sort. So when you're
- 11:04Speaker 4: a player on a team, and again this is just
- 11:06Speaker 4: my opinion of you know how I feel about it,
- 11:10Speaker 4: When you're a player on a team, in order to
- 11:14Speaker 4: fall in line and kind of follow the headman, you
- 11:19Speaker 4: have to be able to say to yourself, well, what
- 11:22Speaker 4: are you bringing to the table. So not everything that
- 11:25Speaker 4: Bill Belichick, and the reason why I wanted to bring
- 11:28Speaker 4: him into the conversation is because not everything that Bill
- 11:31Speaker 4: Belichick did every player liked. Right, we know that over
- 11:36Speaker 4: twenty plus years, how many different guys, even when they
- 11:39Speaker 4: were winning, how many different guys had issues with Bill
- 11:43Speaker 4: tons dozens. But on Sundays they were the most prepared team,
- 11:48Speaker 4: They were the most well coached team. Their game plans
- 11:51Speaker 4: and their schemes were innovative and hard to defend or
- 11:56Speaker 4: hard to score against offensively. So everybody said, yeah, you know,
- 12:02Speaker 4: he can be a little rough around the edges at times,
- 12:04Speaker 4: but he's a mad genius.
- 12:05Speaker 2: And this is we know he's gonna put us in
- 12:08Speaker 2: a position.
- 12:09Speaker 3: There were guys I think it's Runny Harris.
- 12:10Speaker 2: I don't want to false attribute this to him, but
- 12:12Speaker 2: I know there's some guys from that era that talked about, like, yeah,
- 12:14Speaker 2: when I was playing for Bill, it was tough.
- 12:17Speaker 3: I always understand it.
- 12:18Speaker 2: It was frustrating, but like looking back on it now
- 12:20Speaker 2: five years, ten years later, you know, I appreciate what
- 12:22Speaker 2: he did right because he got the most out of me.
- 12:25Speaker 2: He got the most out of us, and I think
- 12:26Speaker 2: that's what the culture was. I think that's what the
- 12:29Speaker 2: culture was was that this isn't gonna be easy. Yeah,
- 12:31Speaker 2: you're not necessarily going to enjoy it on the day
- 12:33Speaker 2: to day, but at the end, you're gonna be a
- 12:36Speaker 2: champion and you're gonna be like I think Bill was
- 12:39Speaker 2: also part of, like, you know, personal development too, which
- 12:41Speaker 2: is something Drove me has talked about, and you know,
- 12:45Speaker 2: guys appreciate that retroactively. But I also think there's an
- 12:48Speaker 2: element of winning cure as all. Like I'm a big
- 12:50Speaker 2: believer in that, right. I don't think you're seeing a
- 12:54Speaker 2: lot of the issues you're seeing now. It's Patriots if
- 12:56Speaker 2: they're simply winning games, so I amlue like and I
- 13:00Speaker 2: think that's part of why Bill's system worked, because they won.
- 13:04Speaker 4: It just it's tough as a player. I would think
- 13:07Speaker 4: it would be tough as a player too. Now we're
- 13:12Speaker 4: in a situation where it feels like the head coach
- 13:14Speaker 4: might not necessarily have my back at all times, especially
- 13:19Speaker 4: after the comments on Sunday. But I also don't feel
- 13:23Speaker 4: like we are being prepared by this like schematic genius either.
- 13:28Speaker 4: So it's like, as a player, what am I gravitating towards?
- 13:32Speaker 5: Like?
- 13:32Speaker 4: What am I holding on to that these coaches are
- 13:35Speaker 4: doing what's best for us moving forward? And to expand
- 13:40Speaker 4: on this in a little bit more detail specifics. The
- 13:43Speaker 4: one thing that I was really reluctant about when they
- 13:47Speaker 4: made this higher was that Jirod Mayo and we talked
- 13:51Speaker 4: about this back in January. I know we did for
- 13:53Speaker 4: a fact, so it's not retroactive. Girod Mayo right off
- 13:58Speaker 4: the top said that he wanted to be this like
- 14:01Speaker 4: CEO head coach like Bill was, where he was gonna
- 14:06Speaker 4: let his coordinators in his position coaches, and he was
- 14:08Speaker 4: going to delegate, and he was going to be the
- 14:10Speaker 4: guy over the top that was going to make sure
- 14:12Speaker 4: that the ship was pointed in the right direction. The
- 14:16Speaker 4: concern that I had with that from the jump was
- 14:18Speaker 4: that Belichick had fifty years of coaching experience to pull
- 14:25Speaker 4: from to say in an offensive team meeting to Josh McDaniels,
- 14:31Speaker 4: this is what we need to do to win this game,
- 14:33Speaker 4: or this is what we need to fix, like this
- 14:35Speaker 4: is what our issues are, or a special teams meeting,
- 14:39Speaker 4: which he coached in the league, you know, this is
- 14:41Speaker 4: what we're doing wrong, this is what we need to do.
- 14:45Speaker 4: When you look at those things as a first time
- 14:47Speaker 4: coach in the NFL at thirty eight thirty nine years old,
- 14:51Speaker 4: there's just no possible way that Gerardmeyo is going to
- 14:55Speaker 4: have the knowledge of all three phases to be able
- 14:58Speaker 4: to just be that overseer of everything. So I look
- 15:04Speaker 4: at a lot of other young coaches in the league,
- 15:07Speaker 4: and a lot of those guys, early on in their
- 15:10Speaker 4: head coaching tenures, they focus on the side of the
- 15:13Speaker 4: ball that they know. Tamiko Ryans he coaches the defense
- 15:17Speaker 4: in Houston. Bobby Slowick is in charge of the offense.
- 15:20Speaker 4: Tamiko Ryans he's the defensive play caller. He's by all
- 15:23Speaker 4: intents and purposes running the Texans defense as the defensive coordinator.
- 15:27Speaker 4: You look at Sean McVay early on in his career
- 15:30Speaker 4: with the RAM, he hired Wade Phillips to run his defense.
- 15:33Speaker 4: Sean McVay ran the offense, he started getting the program underway,
- 15:37Speaker 4: and he had Wade Phillips there as the head coach
- 15:39Speaker 4: of the defense, and he didn't really have much to
- 15:41Speaker 4: do with it on the defensive side of the ball.
- 15:44Speaker 4: Mike mcga McDonald in Seattle right now, he has the
- 15:50Speaker 4: defensive play calling duties in Seattle. He is running their defense.
- 15:55Speaker 4: So a lot of these younger coaches when they first
- 15:58Speaker 4: get their first crack at it, they're not trying to
- 16:01Speaker 4: go in there and be Bill Belichick in the sense
- 16:03Speaker 4: of I'm gonna run everything right, and I'm gonna have
- 16:06Speaker 4: my hand in every single jar and I'm gonna make
- 16:10Speaker 4: sure that everything's buttoned up and everything's good to go,
- 16:13Speaker 4: because they understand that they don't have the expertise or
- 16:16Speaker 4: the knowledge to go out and do that. And what
- 16:19Speaker 4: I see from right now with Gerrod Mayo is, first
- 16:23Speaker 4: of all, the defense has completely regressed because his hand
- 16:26Speaker 4: might not be as deep into that bucket as it
- 16:28Speaker 4: has been in the past, and I see a guy
- 16:31Speaker 4: that's stretched a little bit thin and is trying to
- 16:33Speaker 4: do too much and is trying to be so involved
- 16:37Speaker 4: in every little aspect that now no aspect is going
- 16:39Speaker 4: the right way.
- 16:40Speaker 2: So if I was Mayo, and he probably won't do this,
- 16:44Speaker 2: but if I was.
- 16:45Speaker 4: Mayo, I would strongly consider taking over the defensive play
- 16:50Speaker 4: calling and I would try to button up the side
- 16:54Speaker 4: of the ball that I know. You know, worry about
- 16:56Speaker 4: what you know, and button up your side of the ball.
- 16:59Speaker 4: I just I feel like this setup is asking a
- 17:02Speaker 4: lot a lot out of a first time head coach.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Well, to me, this partially goes back to the construction
- 17:08Speaker 2: of the staff, and another thing we talked about a
- 17:10Speaker 2: lot back in January was getting that senior football advisor
- 17:16Speaker 2: type person, right, Mike Vrabel was the name we threw
- 17:19Speaker 2: out quite a bit. That isn't the head coach, but
- 17:21Speaker 2: is basically there to be a resource and that would
- 17:24Speaker 2: essentially be your CEO.
- 17:26Speaker 3: But it's not. You know, you look at some of
- 17:29Speaker 3: these young coaches.
- 17:31Speaker 2: I think you made this point on the show last
- 17:32Speaker 2: week Sean McVay when he started offensive mind who have
- 17:36Speaker 2: running the defense Wade Phillips, who's you know, as experienced.
- 17:40Speaker 3: As you can get.
- 17:42Speaker 2: You know, some of these other young coaches, now, Mike McDaniel,
- 17:45Speaker 2: they had Vic Fangio there and I remember if that
- 17:47Speaker 2: was that his first year that they hired fans now
- 17:49Speaker 2: Josh Boyer who was their coordinator with Florence Oh hear, okay,
- 17:54Speaker 2: she had continuity or something like with a lot of
- 17:56Speaker 2: these young coaches, you get that you have a first
- 17:59Speaker 2: time offensive coordinator essentially, first time offense core, first time
- 18:01Speaker 2: offensive play caller. Yeah, just say that, first time defensive coordinator,
- 18:05Speaker 2: first time special teams coordinator.
- 18:07Speaker 3: There are a couple.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Of veterans like sprinkled in on the staff, right, a
- 18:12Speaker 2: guy like Ben McAdoo, a guy like Tom Quinn on
- 18:14Speaker 2: special teams. But the question is are they in positions
- 18:17Speaker 2: where they were empowered to really make a difference or not.
- 18:22Speaker 2: And with a young coach, especially a young coach who
- 18:26Speaker 2: wants to oversee everything, it maybe would have been made
- 18:30Speaker 2: more sense to find veterans, guys with experience in these
- 18:35Speaker 2: other spots. And I think what you're seeing right now
- 18:38Speaker 2: is just you know, it's a very young, very inexperienced
- 18:43Speaker 2: coaching staff. You have a lot of guys that aren't
- 18:45Speaker 2: just new hires, but are in whatever their respective job is,
- 18:48Speaker 2: whatever their title is, they're in that job for the
- 18:51Speaker 2: first time, and they're you know again, like Ben McAdoo,
- 18:58Speaker 2: he's been there. He's also not this like all time
- 19:03Speaker 2: you know, innovative offense like he's experienced, but there's a
- 19:06Speaker 2: reason he was available. How much of an input does
- 19:09Speaker 2: he really have? What kind of position is he in
- 19:12Speaker 2: to say, well, you know, from my experience, we should
- 19:13Speaker 2: do this or that. You know, same for Tom Quinn
- 19:16Speaker 2: on special teams. I'm trying to think if there's an
- 19:18Speaker 2: equivalent on defense on Jerry Montgomery's been in the league,
- 19:23Speaker 2: but he's never been a defensive coordinator. Yeah, I don't
- 19:27Speaker 2: really think they have an equivalent.
- 19:29Speaker 4: No, no, and and and I don't want to guess.
- 19:33Speaker 4: I don't want to spend too much time more on this.
- 19:36Speaker 4: I just philosophically, I just feel as though this girod
- 19:43Speaker 4: MAO has to pick a path of what kind of
- 19:46Speaker 4: coach that he wants to be and if he recognizes, Okay,
- 19:50Speaker 4: I'm not going to be one of these x'es and
- 19:53Speaker 4: O's wizards, Like that's not really my strong suit. My
- 19:56Speaker 4: strong suit is relating to people and communicating and all
- 20:00Speaker 4: that kind of stuff. And that's great, and that can work.
- 20:04Speaker 2: We we are. I gave examples of it working. You
- 20:07Speaker 2: know Campbell, Tomlin carroor.
- 20:09Speaker 3: Written down that you're saying Dan Campbell is working.
- 20:12Speaker 4: But well, yeah, I mean you can't argue, you can't
- 20:14Speaker 4: argue with the results. But Dan Campbell's working with Ben
- 20:18Speaker 4: Johnson and Aaron Glenn as his coordinator. So he has
- 20:21Speaker 4: the nerds and he has the the x's and o's
- 20:23Speaker 4: guys below him on the totem pole. That's not Alex
- 20:27Speaker 4: van Pelt right, like, that's that's a young, innovative offensive mine.
- 20:31Speaker 4: And Ben Johnson, who everybody is kicking the door down
- 20:35Speaker 4: to hire as a head coach. That's a different situation.
- 20:38Speaker 4: So you look at all this stuff and I believe
- 20:43Speaker 4: that he wants to be He keeps on bringing him
- 20:46Speaker 4: up like in that Dan Campbell mold. Yeah, if he
- 20:50Speaker 4: wants to be in that Dan Campbell mold, then things
- 20:54Speaker 4: like press conferences matter, Like that stuff matters more to
- 20:58Speaker 4: you than it would to a Kyle Shanahan because you
- 21:03Speaker 4: need to be sending out a clear, concise, unified message.
- 21:08Speaker 3: And hand's a weirdo in press conferences.
- 21:09Speaker 2: Do you remember a couple years ago when they asked
- 21:11Speaker 2: HI about Jimmy Garoppol and He's like, I don't know
- 21:12Speaker 2: if anybody's gonna be alive by Sunday. Yeah, exactly right.
- 21:16Speaker 4: Like when you're Kyle Shanahan and you say something nutty
- 21:19Speaker 4: like that at a press conference, but players might just
- 21:22Speaker 4: be like, well, that's Kyle, but guess what, like our
- 21:25Speaker 4: game plan on Sunday, We're gonna hang thirty five on
- 21:27Speaker 4: these guys. So it doesn't matter if you're gonna be
- 21:30Speaker 4: that culture builder. If you're going to be that kind
- 21:32Speaker 4: of head coach, then things like calling your team soft
- 21:36Speaker 4: after games and things that you know are being said
- 21:40Speaker 4: in press conferences. That type of stuff needs to be
- 21:43Speaker 4: more buttoned up because they he the players. You need
- 21:46Speaker 4: to win the players over and have them get behind
- 21:49Speaker 4: you because they like you when they respect you, and
- 21:52Speaker 4: these types of things are not doing him any favors.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Again.
- 21:55Speaker 4: I go back to it, though, and I want to
- 21:57Speaker 4: move on to Drake May and some of the other particulars.
- 22:01Speaker 4: I don't love that he has decided to be a
- 22:06Speaker 4: CEO head coach. I think it's really difficult to do
- 22:09Speaker 4: the first time around. Like, if you're doing this, you know,
- 22:13Speaker 4: Bill wasn't truly that until they were already established here
- 22:19Speaker 4: as a winner, like until multiple super Bowls. I mean,
- 22:22Speaker 4: Robert Kraft said that he didn't really give full control
- 22:26Speaker 4: to Bill Belichick into like what like six or seven
- 22:29Speaker 4: or something like that, when Scott only left. So it's
- 22:33Speaker 4: really difficult to do that this early on in your
- 22:36Speaker 4: coaching tenure. There's just a lot of things that you
- 22:39Speaker 4: don't know about that are new, that are coming at
- 22:41Speaker 4: you fast, and I feel as though it might behoove
- 22:46Speaker 4: him to focus more on one particular thing. And if
- 22:51Speaker 4: he can get this defense buttoned up from a fundamental standpoint,
- 22:56Speaker 4: tackling run fits, coverage, busts like, cut down on all
- 23:01Speaker 4: that kind of stuff, and be a little bit more
- 23:04Speaker 4: of like a quality control guy on that side of
- 23:06Speaker 4: the ball, then they can stay in games more. But
- 23:10Speaker 4: if he's going to continue things like this, then I
- 23:13Speaker 4: don't see a path of it necessarily getting better, and
- 23:16Speaker 4: that can be scary. In terms of the quarterback, I
- 23:22Speaker 4: do want to give the coaching staff a tiny bit
- 23:25Speaker 4: of kudos. I feel like they've taken on a lot
- 23:28Speaker 4: of water. I want to give them a tiny bit
- 23:31Speaker 4: of kudos because as much as we can rail them
- 23:36Speaker 4: for all this stuff we just talked about, I am very,
- 23:39Speaker 4: very impressed with Drake May and his development and his
- 23:46Speaker 4: preparedness for these games. Like Drake May is ready to go,
- 23:49Speaker 4: yeah on Sundays. They whatever they're doing, whether it's McAdoo,
- 23:54Speaker 4: it's Van Pelt, it's TC McCartney, the quarterbacks coach. I
- 23:59Speaker 4: don't know who's exactly responsible. They keep telling us it's
- 24:03Speaker 4: Van Pelt, So I'm just gonna give him the credit
- 24:07Speaker 4: for the time being. Whoever is responsible for Drake May
- 24:12Speaker 4: in his development and getting him ready to play on
- 24:15Speaker 4: Sundays and all that kind of stuff, they've done a
- 24:18Speaker 4: great job with him. They've done a really nice job
- 24:20Speaker 4: with him.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Yeah. No, absolutely, I think you know, there's a lot
- 24:23Speaker 2: of questions about the plan. There's a lot of questions
- 24:25Speaker 2: about the timeline, but clearly it worked. And I know
- 24:28Speaker 2: there's people now like, imagine he was playing earlier. You know,
- 24:31Speaker 2: maybe those five weeks made a difference. Have you considered that, No, Like,
- 24:35Speaker 2: there were always going to be people who who whenever
- 24:39Speaker 2: Drake May started, if he looked Good said, well, he
- 24:41Speaker 2: should have been playing earlier, completely ignoring the whole concept
- 24:44Speaker 2: of the passage of time. But no, he's been He's
- 24:47Speaker 2: been really impressive. Van Pelt does deserve credit. And and
- 24:53Speaker 2: you know, you hope that now you walk this type
- 24:57Speaker 2: rope where you hope that the other things that are
- 25:00Speaker 2: going on in the organization don't derail the progress he's making.
- 25:04Speaker 2: And I know there's been some questions about changing the
- 25:06Speaker 2: offensive coordinator, coaching changes in the off season, which are
- 25:10Speaker 2: like fair questions, but I think anytime you ask those
- 25:13Speaker 2: you have to factor in what it means for Drake
- 25:16Speaker 2: May because at this point, like you're seeing from Drake
- 25:19Speaker 2: May a guy who truly potentially is the future, and
- 25:23Speaker 2: you don't want to mess around with that.
- 25:24Speaker 4: Yeah, I continue to be super impressed with med how
- 25:31Speaker 4: much of a grasp he has on the game already
- 25:34Speaker 4: so early on. There's some physical stuff stuff I want
- 25:37Speaker 4: to get to on the on the you know, the
- 25:39Speaker 4: minus side or the negative side as well, but his
- 25:42Speaker 4: ability right now, UH to process defense, to understand coverage,
- 25:47Speaker 4: ID coverage, UH, get through his progressions and get through
- 25:51Speaker 4: his reads, Like this is a guy that's going one, two,
- 25:54Speaker 4: three in progressions consistently. You know one, two, three, uh,
- 25:58Speaker 4: check down, backside dig, left to right, right to left,
- 26:02Speaker 4: progression reads I D in coverage, you know Tampa two,
- 26:06Speaker 4: you know exotic Tampa two man to man like that's
- 26:09Speaker 4: what he's getting last week in Jacksonville, and he's reading
- 26:12Speaker 4: it all out and knowing where to go with the football.
- 26:14Speaker 4: I have so very few problems with where he's going
- 26:17Speaker 4: with the ball.
- 26:19Speaker 2: Now.
- 26:20Speaker 4: Is the ball getting there is is maybe a different
- 26:22Speaker 4: story which we can talk about, but so much of
- 26:26Speaker 4: the battle for young quarterbacks is knowing where to go
- 26:29Speaker 4: with it, not necessarily is it accurate, and all that
- 26:33Speaker 4: kind of stuff, anticipation, playing on time, playing from the pocket,
- 26:38Speaker 4: trusting the pocket, like all these types of things. He's
- 26:41Speaker 4: doing really well and progressing and getting better at and
- 26:45Speaker 4: over the course of games and over the course of weeks,
- 26:47Speaker 4: now that we've seen him multiple weeks. You know a
- 26:50Speaker 4: couple throws that stood out, obviously, the touchdown pass to Hasty.
- 26:55Speaker 4: He's very very hot on that play. Right they have
- 26:58Speaker 4: two unblocked blitzers coming off the right side. He immediately
- 27:01Speaker 4: knows where his answer is. Poised, calm, collected, under pressure,
- 27:06Speaker 4: throws it out to Hasty. Lets this guy go and
- 27:09Speaker 4: make a play, and they end up scoring a touchdown
- 27:11Speaker 4: on it. The touchdown throw to kJ Osborne, you know
- 27:13Speaker 4: it's Tampa two. Henry gets carried Osborne doesn't. He throws
- 27:18Speaker 4: the ball to Osbourne, layers it in there perfectly with
- 27:21Speaker 4: some anticipation. Those types of throws are you don't necessarily
- 27:26Speaker 4: see young quarterbacks making those types of reads, those type
- 27:28Speaker 4: of decisions and throws this early on in the game.
- 27:31Speaker 4: You know, I was just watching the last couple of
- 27:34Speaker 4: weeks watch a lot of Caleb, you know, with cross
- 27:37Speaker 4: film and stuff like that. I was just watching this
- 27:39Speaker 4: morning Caleb in Week one against this Titans defense, the
- 27:42Speaker 4: Patriots are gonna face. They had like one hundred and
- 27:44Speaker 4: eighty yards of total offense. You know, like he's all
- 27:47Speaker 4: over the place, you know, leaving pockets on shore holding
- 27:50Speaker 4: the football, things like that. You don't see a ton
- 27:53Speaker 4: of deer in the headlights right now from Drake May
- 27:57Speaker 4: where it looks like he just doesn't really know what
- 27:59Speaker 4: he's looking at or where he's going.
- 28:00Speaker 2: With the ball.
- 28:02Speaker 4: That type of stuff is extremely impressive. Maybe it speaks
- 28:05Speaker 4: to him sitting like that, there's a possibility and you know,
- 28:07Speaker 4: I'm not a pro sit kind of guy, but the
- 28:10Speaker 4: one thing I would say that's anti sit with May
- 28:13Speaker 4: is he's also seems to every single down, every single
- 28:16Speaker 4: snap he takes, every time he drops back, you see him.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Learning and getting better. And so he's getting better rapidly
- 28:23Speaker 2: now because he's playing, you know, but like you don't
- 28:25Speaker 2: think that was happening in practice, and I'm not maybe
- 28:29Speaker 2: the same extent that happens in again, but maybe they
- 28:32Speaker 2: wanted that to happen in practice for a month or
- 28:34Speaker 2: so before they put him in a game.
- 28:35Speaker 3: I think that's pro sit.
- 28:37Speaker 2: It's possible, but.
- 28:39Speaker 4: I look at it drive to drive. In games, you're
- 28:44Speaker 4: seeing him make a mistake and then come back to
- 28:48Speaker 4: the same mistake later, and.
- 28:50Speaker 2: That's encouraging, but it's also like the thing he still
- 28:52Speaker 2: has to work on, and I honestly he did a
- 28:54Speaker 2: better job at this past week, but like again that
- 28:56Speaker 2: coming out not too hot, yeah, not too high, and
- 29:00Speaker 2: just kind of being able to settle into the game.
- 29:02Speaker 2: So that's all super encouraging.
- 29:05Speaker 4: We talked a lot about like quarterback philosophy last week,
- 29:08Speaker 4: or I'd rather have the toolsy guy that sees it well.
- 29:11Speaker 4: But doesn't always throw accurately than a Zach Wilson or
- 29:15Speaker 4: a mac Jones who has limitations that are maybe beyond repair.
- 29:19Speaker 4: I still don't see anything with Drake May that I
- 29:21Speaker 4: feel like is bust potential. No at this point. Now
- 29:25Speaker 4: with that being said, just to be objective about it.
- 29:29Speaker 4: On the other side of the coin with him, the
- 29:31Speaker 4: one thing that I would say that I see with
- 29:33Speaker 4: him now is we're still seeing half a dozen sprays
- 29:39Speaker 4: a game. Yeah, And I know some people are why
- 29:41Speaker 4: you harping on the sprays, like why it becomes a
- 29:45Speaker 4: big deal? And I thought JT. Os Sullivan I had
- 29:47Speaker 4: watched it last night. He did a QB school on
- 29:50Speaker 4: Drake May. I thought he did a great job of
- 29:51Speaker 4: explaining it with tangible evidence. The issue is is that
- 29:56Speaker 4: when you miss the throw on first down, it has
- 29:58Speaker 4: a domino effect on second and third. So when you
- 30:01Speaker 4: come back on second down, and the example that JT
- 30:05Speaker 4: used was second and fourteen, he has Pop Douglas on
- 30:10Speaker 4: a little out on the sideline and he just airmails it, right,
- 30:14Speaker 4: he just completely misses the throw. So now instead of
- 30:17Speaker 4: second in fourteen becoming third and seven, it's now third
- 30:21Speaker 4: and fourteen, right, and so these issues have this cumulative
- 30:25Speaker 4: effect that now because we missed the layup on second down,
- 30:29Speaker 4: now third and four team, now we're punting right. And
- 30:33Speaker 4: when you're looking for things like consistent offense, it's difficult
- 30:36Speaker 4: to be a consistent offense in this league when you're
- 30:40Speaker 4: constantly behind schedule.
- 30:42Speaker 2: And one thing I'll say for May to his credit,
- 30:45Speaker 2: like these receivers want to make plays for him. You
- 30:47Speaker 2: have guys in this I know this sounds basic, it's not.
- 30:50Speaker 2: It's not the case on every team. You have guys
- 30:53Speaker 2: in this receiver room. As much as they've kind of
- 30:54Speaker 2: complained in the past week, Dave shown, they'll go outside
- 30:57Speaker 2: their catch radius, they'll go into contact to try to
- 31:00Speaker 2: make a catch. So it's not even like he has
- 31:03Speaker 2: to put the ball directly in the bread basket every
- 31:06Speaker 2: single time. But if he gives these guys competitive throws,
- 31:10Speaker 2: you know, ideally you want to put it right in
- 31:11Speaker 2: the hands, but on the chances, on the on the
- 31:14Speaker 2: case he doesn't, if you can at least give them
- 31:16Speaker 2: competitive throws, you have guys whoill go up and make
- 31:18Speaker 2: a play for you. You don't have guys I could
- 31:21Speaker 2: probably get there, but I want to take the hit right,
- 31:22Speaker 2: which does happen around the league. Yea, And I even
- 31:25Speaker 2: credit to this receiver corps. I haven't really seen that
- 31:28Speaker 2: with them outside of maybe a handful of ex smples,
- 31:30Speaker 2: and some of those guys aren't playing right now. So
- 31:34Speaker 2: if he can just get to the point where these
- 31:35Speaker 2: strows are competitive, it changes a lot. But these are
- 31:38Speaker 2: throws that it's I mean, there were a couple light
- 31:40Speaker 2: to go back and watch. I think to throw to
- 31:41Speaker 2: Pop was one of them. Ry couldn't tell if he
- 31:43Speaker 2: was throwing the ball away or not.
- 31:44Speaker 4: No, No, he's throwing it to the guys, and he's
- 31:47Speaker 4: going for the most part, like I keep saying, like
- 31:50Speaker 4: he's going to the right places with the ball. We
- 31:53Speaker 4: just gotta now work on being more consistent with our
- 31:56Speaker 4: ball placement so that the ball is getting to where
- 31:58Speaker 4: it needs to go. I'll give you another example, because
- 32:02Speaker 4: I don't want it to sound like I'm just nitpicking.
- 32:04Speaker 4: One example, the third down throw to Kendrick Bourne. Yep,
- 32:07Speaker 4: that's a four point play. That's a difference between ten
- 32:10Speaker 4: nothing and fourteen nothing. That's a big deal in an
- 32:13Speaker 4: NFL game.
- 32:14Speaker 2: You know.
- 32:14Speaker 4: He said it himself after the game, like I need
- 32:17Speaker 4: to throw a better ball there. If he hits Kendrick
- 32:19Speaker 4: Bourne coming out of that incut and stride, that might
- 32:22Speaker 4: be a touchdown. There's one there's one safety to be
- 32:24Speaker 4: in the middle of the field with a ton of
- 32:26Speaker 4: room where Bourne can go left or right to get
- 32:28Speaker 4: around him and walk into the end zone. If he
- 32:31Speaker 4: hits him on that throw, that's a big difference between
- 32:34Speaker 4: ten and fourteen nothing early on in the game.
- 32:37Speaker 2: So you look at.
- 32:38Speaker 4: Those types of things, and that to me is why
- 32:42Speaker 4: you have stretches of games where they still have no
- 32:45Speaker 4: offense right like, And I understand that there's other issues
- 32:48Speaker 4: involved at the offense of not putting it just on him,
- 32:51Speaker 4: but it's those inconsistencies with this offense, this group as
- 32:55Speaker 4: a whole, whether it's like you know, second quarter, you
- 32:58Speaker 4: have a protection breakdown, you have a drop, you have
- 33:01Speaker 4: a misthrow, like, those are the differences between we just
- 33:05Speaker 4: started hot and flamed out and we have this sustained
- 33:08Speaker 4: success for four quarters and we have offense for four quarters.
- 33:11Speaker 4: So when it comes to the misses, I think the
- 33:15Speaker 4: number one thing that I see with him mechanically is
- 33:19Speaker 4: the throwing hallway.
- 33:21Speaker 2: So the throwing.
- 33:22Speaker 4: Hallway feet feet, hips, shoulders, eyes, right, all of that
- 33:27Speaker 4: needs to be pointed in the right direction of where
- 33:30Speaker 4: you want the football to go. And if you're not
- 33:33Speaker 4: pointed in that hallway to the right direction, then you're
- 33:37Speaker 4: really opening yourself up to having inaccuracies as a quarterback.
- 33:41Speaker 4: So at times right now you'll see him, you know,
- 33:45Speaker 4: throwing the ball to the right or to the left,
- 33:48Speaker 4: but he's pointed inside and that causes him to have
- 33:52Speaker 4: to like open up his front foot and like swing
- 33:54Speaker 4: the gate open, and then all now we're air mailing it,
- 33:57Speaker 4: we're missing throws, whatever the case may be. So there's
- 34:00Speaker 4: still some footwork things I would say with that that
- 34:04Speaker 4: can be fine tuned and fixed that I think will
- 34:07Speaker 4: really improve his accuracy once he gets to the point
- 34:09Speaker 4: where that's more consistent and he's throwing from a more
- 34:12Speaker 4: solid base. Now that being said, he can also just
- 34:16Speaker 4: go out there and throw a dime to Kishan Boudi
- 34:18Speaker 4: on a go ball. That's the prettiest throw you'll ever see.
- 34:21Speaker 4: And that's that's been a little bit of the Drake
- 34:23Speaker 4: may experience, even going back to North Carolina. So there's
- 34:27Speaker 4: so much positive I would say, it's like ninety positive ye.
- 34:30Speaker 3: Good, but you're here to talk about everything.
- 34:32Speaker 4: Yeah, those are the little things that I noticed with
- 34:34Speaker 4: him that I would just like to see him improve on,
- 34:37Speaker 4: especially with those inaccuracy bouts, Like he has these bouts
- 34:41Speaker 4: where he'll just have some throws that just start to
- 34:43Speaker 4: snowball on it.
- 34:44Speaker 2: And again, I wonder if some of that is just adrenaline.
- 34:46Speaker 2: It could if it's just you know, get hearts pumped
- 34:50Speaker 2: a little too fast and it's putting more on it
- 34:52Speaker 2: than he needs to because he's.
- 34:53Speaker 3: Just you know, feeling it.
- 34:54Speaker 2: He's in the moment and just again being able to
- 34:57Speaker 2: take that. Depex talked about this last week. Don't not
- 34:59Speaker 2: play with passion. But you know there are quarterbacks that
- 35:03Speaker 2: get into those moments and they let it get away
- 35:04Speaker 2: from him with the truly great Do is harness that? Yeah,
- 35:08Speaker 2: and use it to to you know, really focus in
- 35:12Speaker 2: that much more? Yeah?
- 35:13Speaker 4: Yeah, just a couple of more throws on the positive side.
- 35:18Speaker 4: The throw to Hunter Henry up the seam.
- 35:21Speaker 2: Yeah, great catch. But when I watched it back and
- 35:24Speaker 2: watching that live, that's a no, no, yes type of
- 35:28Speaker 2: throw live. Watching it back, I was like, oh, wow, no,
- 35:31Speaker 2: actually he saw the coverage. It's Tampa to the defender
- 35:35Speaker 2: is on Hunter Henry's back with his back to the quarterback.
- 35:38Speaker 2: So all, if you're the quarterback in that situation, all
- 35:41Speaker 2: you got to do is throw the ball up, like
- 35:44Speaker 2: just throw it high and let your your big six
- 35:46Speaker 2: foot five tight end go ahead and make a play
- 35:48Speaker 2: on the football. That was a really good throw in
- 35:51Speaker 2: hindsight watching it back, and it's from like a foam
- 35:54Speaker 2: booth condensed pocket. He doesn't really have a pocket to
- 35:57Speaker 2: step up into and really drive that throw. And that's
- 36:00Speaker 2: where the arm talent shines, you know, when he does
- 36:02Speaker 2: has muddied pockets, nothing to step into, and he still
- 36:06Speaker 2: has that ability to get the football there, not to
- 36:09Speaker 2: like constantly make it about him. But the last quarterback
- 36:12Speaker 2: here could not make that throw. Like that's just not
- 36:14Speaker 2: a throw that that was in one of those guys
- 36:17Speaker 2: either one.
- 36:18Speaker 3: I was about to make.
- 36:20Speaker 2: To be honest, neither one of those guys have that
- 36:22Speaker 2: in their bag. That was a great throw obviously once
- 36:26Speaker 2: a game. Now we're seeing him ta keish on Booty
- 36:29Speaker 2: on a deep ball, just perfectly throwing passes to Booty
- 36:33Speaker 2: on those vertical rats.
- 36:35Speaker 4: Uh, those are great. A couple of great throws to
- 36:37Speaker 4: Hunter Henry in the middle of the field too. Finally,
- 36:39Speaker 4: some like scheme stuff I thought from Van Pelt going
- 36:42Speaker 4: fast forward, like motioning the back into the into the
- 36:46Speaker 4: same side of the progression and then you have four
- 36:48Speaker 4: guys releasing on one side of the field. That's like
- 36:51Speaker 4: a nice half field read against zone coverage that I
- 36:53Speaker 4: thought was actually the first time schematically that I.
- 36:56Speaker 2: Was like, Oh, that's cool, that's neat, Like, good job
- 36:59Speaker 2: with that. Uh, that was nice. Uh.
- 37:01Speaker 4: There's just a lot of really good things to come
- 37:04Speaker 4: from him. Is there anything else that we got you're
- 37:07Speaker 4: thinking of with.
- 37:07Speaker 2: The kind of minor So there's a play in the
- 37:10Speaker 2: third quarter where they're trying to set up a screen
- 37:14Speaker 2: to Jamichael Hasty yep, and May rolls to the right, sorry,
- 37:20Speaker 2: rolls to the left, So he's off. He's he's throwing
- 37:23Speaker 2: across his body and it's just the play's not there
- 37:27Speaker 2: and he maybe has a very tight window to Hunter Henry.
- 37:30Speaker 2: It's for minimal gain, but it's maybe there, and instead
- 37:33Speaker 2: he just spikes the ball at Hasty's feet. Yeah, And
- 37:36Speaker 2: I just thought that was a really mature play. A
- 37:38Speaker 2: lot of young quarterbacks going to force it into the
- 37:40Speaker 2: tight end, the three yards would not have made a
- 37:43Speaker 2: difference in that situation. He didn't get stuck on the
- 37:45Speaker 2: street screen too long.
- 37:47Speaker 3: He didn't.
- 37:47Speaker 2: I know. We talked about him as a guy that
- 37:48Speaker 2: can make something out of nothing, but I think for
- 37:50Speaker 2: those guys, it's also important to know when that's realistic
- 37:53Speaker 2: and when it's not. Could he have maybe zipped it
- 37:55Speaker 2: in a Hunter Henry possibly the defenders Right there, he's
- 37:57Speaker 2: getting get tackled for like a two yard gain on
- 38:00Speaker 2: second and ten lift to see another down. And that's
- 38:03Speaker 2: something I worried about with him. That's maybe my biggest
- 38:05Speaker 2: worry with him. Yeah, coming in was was he going
- 38:08Speaker 2: to know when to live to see another down? And
- 38:10Speaker 2: I thought that was a really good example if he
- 38:12Speaker 2: had a chance to take a risk, but it was
- 38:14Speaker 2: a risk with really minimal upside. Instead, he just ate
- 38:17Speaker 2: it and said, you know what, put the ball on
- 38:18Speaker 2: the ground. Let's get this to the next play. Yeah.
- 38:20Speaker 4: There are some certain people that were very happy about
- 38:23Speaker 4: that play. Okay, yeah, I think you understand.
- 38:25Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. Yeah. And again, like people might look at
- 38:27Speaker 2: that and be like, he's throwing down the field the
- 38:29Speaker 2: King shun booty.
- 38:29Speaker 3: You're talking about a blown screen.
- 38:31Speaker 2: Yeah, when we're projecting forward, you always compare him to
- 38:34Speaker 2: Josh Allen. What drives me up the wall about Josh Allen.
- 38:38Speaker 2: Josh Allen throws that ball to the tight end and
- 38:40Speaker 2: maybe it's an unbelievable throw that fits in the window,
- 38:43Speaker 2: maybe gets picked. And in that point in the game,
- 38:45Speaker 2: especially coming after a game where he turned the ball
- 38:47Speaker 2: over three times like a turnover, there is a massive no, no,
- 38:51Speaker 2: it's not worth it. Two to three yards are gonna
- 38:53Speaker 2: get So to see him do that you talked before about,
- 38:55Speaker 2: you know, being beyond his years a little bit and
- 38:58Speaker 2: making some more veteran.
- 38:59Speaker 3: Decisions that one's gonna get lost in.
- 39:01Speaker 2: The box score history is an incomplete pass. But that's
- 39:05Speaker 2: something where I look at and I'm like, he's learning.
- 39:08Speaker 2: He like, turn the ball over last week a bunch.
- 39:10Speaker 2: He's being smart with the football and I think they
- 39:12Speaker 2: ended up going three and out. So, you know, some
- 39:14Speaker 2: people may roll their eyes at this and say I'm
- 39:15Speaker 2: being too complimentary. That's something that you build on and
- 39:18Speaker 2: you go in the film room and say like that's good.
- 39:20Speaker 2: And if I'm a coach, right from Alex Vanpel, I
- 39:22Speaker 2: see that and it's like, all right, I can trust
- 39:24Speaker 2: the kid more because he's not gonna go out there
- 39:26Speaker 2: and trip all over himself. So that was a play
- 39:28Speaker 2: that really stood out to me.
- 39:30Speaker 4: There's another one, another check down that he threw, where
- 39:34Speaker 4: on when Who gets beat to the inside quickly and
- 39:37Speaker 4: he had his eyes downfield initially, he feels the pressure
- 39:41Speaker 4: and he's able to just kind of keep the play
- 39:43Speaker 4: on schedule and just kind of move over to his
- 39:46Speaker 4: right a little bit. And we always talk about like
- 39:49Speaker 4: don't take five steps when two steps will do. This
- 39:52Speaker 4: was a perfect example of doing that the right way.
- 39:55Speaker 4: And it was like a little tear screen to the
- 39:57Speaker 4: right where like the tight end kind of works as
- 40:00Speaker 4: a blocker to the to the to the back and
- 40:03Speaker 4: the flat, and then on the on the other side,
- 40:06Speaker 4: it's kind of like an iso like slant or something
- 40:08Speaker 4: like that that you can throw that if you like that,
- 40:11Speaker 4: you know access to that slant. And he feels the
- 40:14Speaker 4: pressure off the right side on when Who gets kind
- 40:16Speaker 4: of beat to the inside, and he just very calmly
- 40:19Speaker 4: just walks around the pressure dumps it off. I think
- 40:21Speaker 4: it was the hasty or Stevenson in the flat. They
- 40:24Speaker 4: gained some positive yards and we're still on the on
- 40:26Speaker 4: the script here, you know, and those types of things
- 40:28Speaker 4: he did consistently much better. You know, took four sacks
- 40:32Speaker 4: in the opener or in his opener in his first start.
- 40:35Speaker 4: This time, I thought he did a much better job
- 40:37Speaker 4: of avoiding those times.
- 40:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I think there's one play he ran into coverage
- 40:41Speaker 2: that was it. And I get like to kind of
- 40:43Speaker 2: clarify this because I think some people might be confused.
- 40:45Speaker 2: We're talking about incomplete broken screen to check down. If
- 40:48Speaker 2: we're still drooling over this stuff in four or five years,
- 40:51Speaker 2: absolutely call in calls bosos, like this is that thing
- 40:55Speaker 2: we've talked about where this year is a lot about
- 40:58Speaker 2: how are you projecting Drake may forward. It's just another
- 41:01Speaker 2: box that he checked it, Like, all right, he knows
- 41:03Speaker 2: what's doing that situation. Good, Yeah, moving on.
- 41:05Speaker 3: But we hadn't necessarily seen him in these situations.
- 41:07Speaker 2: Sly, not on in the regular season in the NFL,
- 41:09Speaker 2: So it just feels worth pointing out, like, all right,
- 41:12Speaker 2: this thing is he's cleared this this box on the
- 41:14Speaker 2: on the checklist onto the next one. Yep, yep, absolutely
- 41:17Speaker 2: all right.
- 41:17Speaker 4: Now there's one defensive thing I want to talk about,
- 41:20Speaker 4: and then we can do three up, three down, and
- 41:21Speaker 4: then we're gonna take the phone calls and emails because
- 41:23Speaker 4: there are plenty of those coming in, so we always
- 41:26Speaker 4: appreciate that. But one thing I just want to get
- 41:29Speaker 4: off my my chest defensively watching this game back, it
- 41:34Speaker 4: felt like calling out anything else besides just you know,
- 41:38Speaker 4: run defense is effort and want to and my guy
- 41:42Speaker 4: against your guy and physicality and mindset and all that
- 41:46Speaker 4: kind of stuff like It's it's very seldom that run
- 41:49Speaker 4: defense is like a big schematic thing, like you know,
- 41:54Speaker 4: oh they're they're doing something so egregiously wrong schematically or
- 41:58Speaker 4: right schematically to stop the run. It's usually just push,
- 42:02Speaker 4: push me back right.
- 42:04Speaker 6: Uh.
- 42:04Speaker 4: The one thing I would just say with the defense
- 42:06Speaker 4: that I actually asked de Marcus Cummington about this today
- 42:10Speaker 4: was their personnel usage, and he mentioned that they're seeing
- 42:15Speaker 4: a lot of heavy personnel from teams, you know, twelve personnel,
- 42:19Speaker 4: twenty one personnel, you know too tight end full back
- 42:22Speaker 4: if you have a full back on your roster. Teams
- 42:25Speaker 4: are putting heavy personnel on the field against the Patriots
- 42:28Speaker 4: hoping that the Patriots are gonna match them in heavy personnel.
- 42:31Speaker 4: So the Patriots this year are playing base defense almost
- 42:37Speaker 4: forty two percent of the time. That's a twenty percent
- 42:40Speaker 4: increase from last year. So basically what teams are doing
- 42:44Speaker 4: is they're putting their heavy personnel pack edge on it.
- 42:46Speaker 4: Let's just call it twelve, you know, two tight end,
- 42:48Speaker 4: two receiver, one back, and they're telling the Patriots, put
- 42:53Speaker 4: base personnel on your side of the field, because what
- 42:56Speaker 4: we're gonna do is we're gonna throw against your base
- 42:59Speaker 4: defense because we know that your linebackers in particular, are
- 43:03Speaker 4: not great in coverage. So we're gonna get base personnel
- 43:07Speaker 4: on the field on both sides. We're gonna spread you out,
- 43:09Speaker 4: we're gonna throw the ball down the field. And my
- 43:12Speaker 4: criticism of Covington is that he is allowing that to happen,
- 43:18Speaker 4: like he is giving these other teams exactly what they want.
- 43:22Speaker 4: So the Patriots are playing the fourth highest rate of
- 43:25Speaker 4: base personnel in the league right now, and they're giving
- 43:28Speaker 4: up the third most yards in personnel. So it's not
- 43:32Speaker 4: working right like they're they're kind of conceding into it,
- 43:35Speaker 4: and it's not working. On Sunday, they give up the
- 43:38Speaker 4: sixty yard bomb to Brian Thomas Junior, twelve personnel against
- 43:42Speaker 4: Patriots base defense bombs away right like that. That's the
- 43:46Speaker 4: script right now against the Patriots. So if you're comington,
- 43:50Speaker 4: you have a choice to make. You gotta go lighter
- 43:53Speaker 4: and okay, we might get run on like a little
- 43:56Speaker 4: bit today, or you gotta go heavy, but you have
- 43:59Speaker 4: to go heavy and stop the run.
- 44:01Speaker 2: Like right now, they're going heavy and they're not doing anything.
- 44:03Speaker 3: Well, that's what I'm gonna say. That's what it all
- 44:05Speaker 3: comes down to.
- 44:05Speaker 7: You.
- 44:05Speaker 2: You kind of have to keep the base person on
- 44:07Speaker 2: the field. They're not they're not stopping the run on
- 44:09Speaker 2: Nickel right now. There's no shot, right, They're not stopping
- 44:11Speaker 2: the run out of anything. Well, right, So that's the problem.
- 44:14Speaker 4: Like, if you're gonna play bass, then okay, but you
- 44:17Speaker 4: have to stop the run. If you're gonna play bass, like,
- 44:20Speaker 4: you can't play bass and then not be able to
- 44:22Speaker 4: stop anything, right, Like, there's gotta be a gin in
- 44:24Speaker 4: the yang there. That's the problem that they're facing right now,
- 44:28Speaker 4: because if you can stop and make one the team's
- 44:31Speaker 4: one dimensional and all that and the other thing, well,
- 44:33Speaker 4: then now on third down, you can get Nickel onto
- 44:36Speaker 4: the field and you can get your extra coverage defenders
- 44:39Speaker 4: out there and you can be more athletic and be
- 44:40Speaker 4: more dynamic in the back end. So it feels to
- 44:44Speaker 4: me defensively, it could be a horse's issue, Like it
- 44:49Speaker 4: could just be if you want to chalk it up
- 44:51Speaker 4: that they just don't have the horses or they don't
- 44:53Speaker 4: have the personnel, then I hear that a little bit.
- 44:57Speaker 4: But I look at them defensively, and I feel like
- 44:59Speaker 4: every single week schematically they continue to be on their heels,
- 45:03Speaker 4: Like I feel like every time they drop some sort
- 45:06Speaker 4: of an exotic, whether it's a pressure or a coverage
- 45:09Speaker 4: rotation or whatever the case may be, they get got
- 45:14Speaker 4: all the time in those types of looks, you know,
- 45:16Speaker 4: the sixty yard or to Thomas Junior their base and
- 45:20Speaker 4: they try to run some sort of like cover three
- 45:23Speaker 4: rotation on the back end where Mapu and Dugger exchange
- 45:26Speaker 4: and there's no post, right, there's no deep safety in
- 45:29Speaker 4: the middle of the field, and Christian Gonzales gets beat
- 45:32Speaker 4: on the deep post by Brian Thomas Junior looking for
- 45:35Speaker 4: inside help. There is no inside help to be had,
- 45:38Speaker 4: Like those are the types of things that they're trying
- 45:40Speaker 4: to do to disguise and confuse and all that kind
- 45:44Speaker 4: of stuff. And it's just every button that Covington is
- 45:47Speaker 4: pushing right now is the wrong button. And that's what
- 45:50Speaker 4: happens when you're a one and six football team. I
- 45:52Speaker 4: suppose it just all starts up front. I think if
- 45:55Speaker 4: they can figure that out, you'll see some progress. But
- 45:59Speaker 4: if not, every play, almost every play in that game,
- 46:02Speaker 4: like they're just getting blown off the line of scrimmage.
- 46:04Speaker 3: And it is true on both sides of the ball,
- 46:05Speaker 3: by the way, But there was.
- 46:07Speaker 2: A it was late in the third quarter, early in
- 46:09Speaker 2: the fourth quarters on that long drive that the Jags had, which,
- 46:13Speaker 2: by the way, that's seventeen play drive in terms of
- 46:16Speaker 2: time of possession. That's the longest drive in the NFL
- 46:18Speaker 2: since twenty twenty two.
- 46:19Speaker 3: Wow, eleven twenty four off the clock.
- 46:21Speaker 2: And they have a fourth and one in the Jags
- 46:23Speaker 2: line up for quarterback sneak, you know, like usually quarterback
- 46:26Speaker 2: sneak right, quarterback is gonna put a shoulder down and
- 46:28Speaker 2: get ready to lean into it. Trevor Lawrence could have
- 46:32Speaker 2: held the ball out in front of himself like that.
- 46:36Speaker 2: There were too many plays where all right, So the
- 46:38Speaker 2: Jags are at the plus forty, at their plus forty,
- 46:41Speaker 2: that play is being played from like the thirty eight
- 46:43Speaker 2: yard line because of just the initial burst from the
- 46:47Speaker 2: offensive line. And again it was the same on both
- 46:49Speaker 2: sides of the ball, Like Patricks at the plus forty,
- 46:52Speaker 2: they're trying to run the ball, it's being played like
- 46:54Speaker 2: it's from the forty two. I think they had They
- 46:57Speaker 2: were averaging point three three yards before contact on the
- 47:02Speaker 2: ground in this game, yea, So like they weren't getting
- 47:04Speaker 2: out of the backfield before a defender was there. They
- 47:06Speaker 2: just weren't. And you can't. You can't play that way.
- 47:11Speaker 2: Like you're not gonna play that way and be successful.
- 47:13Speaker 2: Every football game is one of the loss at the
- 47:15Speaker 2: line of scrimmage. You're not gonna find teams that win
- 47:18Speaker 2: regularly that aren't at least decent upfront. And in a
- 47:20Speaker 2: game like that, again, they're just getting blown off the
- 47:22Speaker 2: line on both sides. And you talk about the coverage issues, like, yeah,
- 47:25Speaker 2: they maybe being too complicated back there. I thought Gonzalez
- 47:28Speaker 2: was still pretty much right on Brian's a hell of
- 47:31Speaker 2: a thrownhouse actually, So that's.
- 47:33Speaker 4: Like that's why though, like you know, he's so there,
- 47:35Speaker 4: he's playing like a Cover three tech right, Both corners
- 47:38Speaker 4: are so I'm assuming that it's a cover three and
- 47:41Speaker 4: Mapu and Dougger, you know, kind of switch responsibilities where
- 47:44Speaker 4: Dugger starts up top then comes down into the short
- 47:47Speaker 4: zone distribution as like the hook, and then map who
- 47:50Speaker 4: goes back into the post into the middle of the field,
- 47:53Speaker 4: and Mapu opens to Jonathan Jones's side and tries to
- 47:56Speaker 4: take the incut and it just leaves Gonzales one on
- 47:58Speaker 4: one on the post when he has that leverage and
- 48:01Speaker 4: he's playing outside leverage with his hips open inside to
- 48:04Speaker 4: the quarterback, Like it's impossible for him to cover that fight, right.
- 48:08Speaker 2: So that's what I'm saying, Like, but like he's right
- 48:10Speaker 2: there and and he's been good and outside of a
- 48:13Speaker 2: couple of coverage busts, like I don't feel like they're
- 48:15Speaker 2: getting physically beat a ton no.
- 48:17Speaker 4: The only time where I feel like, sorry to cut
- 48:19Speaker 4: you off. The only time that I feel like their
- 48:21Speaker 4: coverage is poor.
- 48:23Speaker 2: Uh. Whether it's Baltimore inspired or it's Brian Flores inspired,
- 48:29Speaker 2: whoever you want to give the credit, you can give
- 48:31Speaker 2: it to.
- 48:31Speaker 3: Uh.
- 48:31Speaker 4: But they're running a lot of those like creeper zone
- 48:34Speaker 4: pressures where they're only in a six man zone and
- 48:38Speaker 4: Flores like started really doing this with five with cover
- 48:40Speaker 4: zero and stuff like that, and he was sort of
- 48:43Speaker 4: the first guy in the NFL level at least to
- 48:46Speaker 4: run a lot of that kind of stuff with zone
- 48:48Speaker 4: coverage behind it instead of man to man. And so
- 48:52Speaker 4: they're running like for example, they had that in cut
- 48:55Speaker 4: you know, angle Texas raut to Deernis Johnson that went
- 48:58Speaker 4: for like twenty six yards. Is in coverage misses the tackle.
- 49:02Speaker 4: That's one of those uh you know, schemed up pressures
- 49:06Speaker 4: where they're blitzing off the ball linebacker and then Ouch
- 49:10Speaker 4: is replacing the off the ball linebacker in the coverage
- 49:13Speaker 4: and it's just a whole thing just opens like the rede.
- 49:17Speaker 2: When I say like the I'm talking about like I
- 49:19Speaker 2: think Christian Zoalz has played well, I think I think
- 49:22Speaker 2: all I think the Joneses have played.
- 49:24Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 49:24Speaker 2: So, but when you're not generating any sort of pass rush, yeah,
- 49:28Speaker 2: and so now you have to blitz or two creative
- 49:31Speaker 2: things in the secondary to try to get a leg
- 49:32Speaker 2: up on defense. Now it's too much to me. It
- 49:35Speaker 2: all goes back to again, just winning up front. I
- 49:37Speaker 2: talked about the run and I had that number zero
- 49:41Speaker 2: point three to three yards before contact with the Patriots
- 49:43Speaker 2: in the ground game. The Jaguars average two point two
- 49:46Speaker 2: yards before contact in the ground games your talk, I
- 49:48Speaker 2: mean night and day. Yeah, then you get into the
- 49:50Speaker 2: pass rush. They only had two pressures in this game,
- 49:55Speaker 2: according to PFF, and one of them was like purely
- 49:57Speaker 2: schemed up Marcus Jones coming from the second level and
- 50:00Speaker 2: he takes a bad angle and he misses the playing
- 50:01Speaker 2: Trevor Lawrence scrambles for a first down on third and eight.
- 50:04Speaker 2: Like they can't do anything at the line of scrimmage
- 50:07Speaker 2: right now, and it's just I I don't want to say,
- 50:11Speaker 2: like it lets the secondary players off the hook, but
- 50:14Speaker 2: they're getting no help. There's no complimentary football right now
- 50:17Speaker 2: on either side because they can't win the line of scrimmage.
- 50:19Speaker 4: Yeah, it's it's disheartening to see how just bad they're
- 50:24Speaker 4: like schemed up pressures have been, whether it's your example,
- 50:28Speaker 4: is a good one of like Marcus Jones and technically
- 50:31Speaker 4: that goes down as a hurry like in like PFF pressure,
- 50:35Speaker 4: but it is a pressure. You know, it's a pressure,
- 50:39Speaker 4: but it's not good pressure, right Like it's it's it's
- 50:42Speaker 4: the bad kind of pressure, which does exist, and every
- 50:46Speaker 4: time they dial it up, it feels like it's either
- 50:48Speaker 4: that or it's getting snuffed out by the offense and
- 50:52Speaker 4: it's blocked and there's no free runners that are actually
- 50:55Speaker 4: applying the good kind of pressure on the quarterback. I
- 50:58Speaker 4: agree with you, like I look at both sides of
- 51:00Speaker 4: the ball. You know, there are things I could I
- 51:02Speaker 4: could nitpick with Alex van Pelt as well. I thought,
- 51:04Speaker 4: actually in this game it was probably one of his
- 51:06Speaker 4: best game plans. That's why you'd score on your first
- 51:10Speaker 4: two drives of the game is usually when you have.
- 51:11Speaker 2: A good script. I thought that he had a good
- 51:14Speaker 2: script in this game. I think the one critique and
- 51:16Speaker 2: this is just it really is driving me up a
- 51:20Speaker 2: wall trying to figure out why this is. They they
- 51:25Speaker 2: stink on play action passes. It's they are not good
- 51:30Speaker 2: at it and jogging off offensively because they.
- 51:33Speaker 3: Don't do it a lot.
- 51:35Speaker 4: It could be but when you look at how teams
- 51:39Speaker 4: are playing them run wise, and like every single team
- 51:43Speaker 4: is just their linebackers are just flying downhill at the
- 51:46Speaker 4: line of scrimmage against the run game like all all
- 51:49Speaker 4: game long on Sunday, outside zone backside linebacker for the
- 51:55Speaker 4: Jaguars is just coming, like he's just coming. And the
- 51:58Speaker 4: fact that they can't like play action or boot or
- 52:01Speaker 4: something off of that and like hit a tight end
- 52:04Speaker 4: coming across the field and take advantage of those players
- 52:08Speaker 4: being so aggressive.
- 52:09Speaker 2: It's just.
- 52:11Speaker 4: It blows my mind that they can't take advantage of
- 52:14Speaker 4: those openings, right, Like, if teams are gonna be so
- 52:17Speaker 4: aggressive against your run game, then you should be feasting
- 52:20Speaker 4: on play action passes off of that. I don't think
- 52:23Speaker 4: their designs are very good. I don't think they're spacing
- 52:26Speaker 4: is very good, even though I asked him about that
- 52:27Speaker 4: today and he kind of told me I was wrong.
- 52:30Speaker 2: I don't really agree. Especially early on in this game.
- 52:33Speaker 4: I thought there were two examples I posted on Twitter
- 52:36Speaker 4: that were just not good route spacing at all on
- 52:39Speaker 4: either one of those play action plays. It just feels
- 52:42Speaker 4: as though they are pairing like outside zone bootleg routes
- 52:48Speaker 4: with gap scheme play action, Like it just doesn't marry
- 52:52Speaker 4: very well. I just don't really love what they're doing. Like,
- 52:56Speaker 4: if you're gonna have these linebackers come downhill at your
- 52:59Speaker 4: offensive line like that, you know, back in the day
- 53:02Speaker 4: with McDaniels and O'Brien, like they would just run gronk
- 53:05Speaker 4: like right behind the linebacker, right like the linebacker bites.
- 53:09Speaker 4: They run some sort of run action, you know, power
- 53:11Speaker 4: trap whatever, get that linebacker to bite gronk right behind him,
- 53:16Speaker 4: right by his ear, you know, and we're moving like
- 53:19Speaker 4: those types of what they would call like bang play actions.
- 53:23Speaker 4: Like this team is desperately begging offensively for some bang
- 53:27Speaker 4: play action plays like just hit it right at the
- 53:29Speaker 4: second level the defense, don't try to go bombs away
- 53:32Speaker 4: on like the post crossers and things like that. It's
- 53:36Speaker 4: that part of it is frustrating to me. But I
- 53:38Speaker 4: actually think that they schemed it up pretty well in
- 53:42Speaker 4: the passing game this week against an inferior opponent. I
- 53:44Speaker 4: should mention on defense, but it was better. It was better.
- 53:48Speaker 4: All right, let's do three up, three down. I'll start
- 53:51Speaker 4: with you because you actually prepared this week.
- 53:52Speaker 3: I always prepare.
- 53:53Speaker 2: You prepared this week. Okay, what do you got? I mean,
- 53:57Speaker 2: we just covered a lot of those up for me.
- 54:00Speaker 2: Hunter Henry just continues to be a good safety blanket. Yeah,
- 54:05Speaker 2: and that's you know, you need that for young quarterback.
- 54:07Speaker 2: You talked about his catch earlier. I thought it was
- 54:09Speaker 2: an excellent catch, like you said, good throw to but
- 54:11Speaker 2: excellent catch.
- 54:12Speaker 3: And yeah, he's been good.
- 54:13Speaker 2: Yep.
- 54:13Speaker 4: Hunter Henry was my number one up as well. I
- 54:16Speaker 4: think he's been exactly what they need for a young quarterback.
- 54:21Speaker 4: You know, some of those throws early on in the
- 54:23Speaker 4: game when they were running those like post wheel out
- 54:26Speaker 4: concepts where he's just like settling into the zone and
- 54:29Speaker 4: like understands where to settle and how to get himself
- 54:32Speaker 4: open and quarterback friendly. You know, he threw one later
- 54:35Speaker 4: in the game to Austin Hooper where Hooper didn't do
- 54:37Speaker 4: the same thing and it was almost a pick. Like
- 54:40Speaker 4: those types of things with Hunter Henry are really impressive,
- 54:44Speaker 4: the off script stuff like him you know, gravitating open
- 54:48Speaker 4: and finding uncovering like dare I say, it's like Kelsey
- 54:52Speaker 4: ish right, Like how good he is in that. He's
- 54:55Speaker 4: really really good at it in the off script mode.
- 54:58Speaker 4: It been impressed with him on that too. Clearly a binky,
- 55:01Speaker 4: Like if you want a pinky, it's clearly been Hunter Henry.
- 55:04Speaker 4: Who's your next one?
- 55:05Speaker 2: My next one was Jamichael Hasty. Yeah, made a nice
- 55:08Speaker 2: play on the touchdown. Thought he said, a couple of
- 55:09Speaker 2: nice blocks in this game as well, Like I thought
- 55:12Speaker 2: he was solid.
- 55:12Speaker 4: Yeah, so I did one offense, one defense on the
- 55:15Speaker 4: ops I did Anthony Jennings. I felt like he was
- 55:17Speaker 4: like the only defender in the run game that was
- 55:20Speaker 4: doing anything of productive or anything of value. Four run
- 55:23Speaker 4: stuffs I had for him in this game. They didn't
- 55:25Speaker 4: run it outside to his side like that, that's for sure.
- 55:29Speaker 4: Had a couple really really good plays in this game.
- 55:32Speaker 4: And he's not soft. He's not having any issues against
- 55:35Speaker 4: the run. He's he's doing his thing in the run game.
- 55:39Speaker 4: They does need other guys to follow suit. You have
- 55:41Speaker 4: anybody else?
- 55:42Speaker 2: Nope, all right, downs, I mean I just gave the
- 55:45Speaker 2: whole spiel I was gonna give. But I had line
- 55:47Speaker 2: of scrimmage. Both sides, can't run ball, can't stop the run,
- 55:50Speaker 2: can't pressure the quarterback. And he gave those numbers yards
- 55:53Speaker 2: before contact, the pressure numbers, all of that. You're not
- 55:57Speaker 2: gonna win football games getting beat the line of scrimmage
- 55:59Speaker 2: like that. Like you know, to drid Mao's comments, they
- 56:01Speaker 2: played soft, they played softed, I know he kind of
- 56:04Speaker 2: recharacterized it from the team is soft to the team
- 56:07Speaker 2: is playing soft. Yeah, you can split hairs there the
- 56:11Speaker 2: reality is that should have comes a surprise to anybody
- 56:15Speaker 2: seeing what was happening at the line of scrimmage. Like
- 56:16Speaker 2: he was right. You want a debate whether or not
- 56:18Speaker 2: he should have said it, right, I'm okay that he
- 56:21Speaker 2: said it because he said it to the team in
- 56:22Speaker 2: the locker room beforehand. I think that's an important piece
- 56:25Speaker 2: attacks that gets lost. It's always good when you have
- 56:28Speaker 2: facts on your side.
- 56:29Speaker 3: Right.
- 56:29Speaker 2: If he hadn't said it in the locker room before,
- 56:31Speaker 2: I'd be like, what are you doing? Guy? But he
- 56:35Speaker 2: was right, And you can't play like that Fauna scrimmage
- 56:38Speaker 2: and win football games, playing in symbol high school, college,
- 56:41Speaker 2: NFL backyard. Whatever you're gonna beat like that at thelaune
- 56:45Speaker 2: of scrimmage, you're not gonna win. Yeah.
- 56:47Speaker 4: I had a similar kind of take on number one.
- 56:50Speaker 4: I just put Drawdmeo and I also put DeMarcus Covington
- 56:53Speaker 4: in this boat a little bit as well. I just
- 56:56Speaker 4: personally like, I just thought defensively, they were not ready
- 57:00Speaker 4: to play in this game. I felt like right out
- 57:02Speaker 4: of the shoot they were getting run on, passed on,
- 57:05Speaker 4: pretty much whatever Jacksonville wanted to do. I didn't feel
- 57:09Speaker 4: like they were prepared for it. You know, Doug Peterson's
- 57:13Speaker 4: him and Press Taylor like they're okay offensive mines. But
- 57:16Speaker 4: this is in twenty seventeen. Doug Peterson, Right, it's been
- 57:20Speaker 4: a minute since that guy's been you know, the darling
- 57:22Speaker 4: of the offensive mines, you know, the.
- 57:25Speaker 2: Type pants guys.
- 57:26Speaker 4: I just really didn't feel like they had much going
- 57:30Speaker 4: on def defensively that was working or that was well
- 57:32Speaker 4: prepared for this game, which was disappointing. And I feel
- 57:35Speaker 4: like I continued to say the same thing weekend and
- 57:38Speaker 4: week out about that side of the football. I feel
- 57:41Speaker 4: like I've been on this set. I've been more concerned
- 57:44Speaker 4: in a lot of ways about the defense and the offense,
- 57:46Speaker 4: because the offense I feel like is a personnel issue,
- 57:49Speaker 4: Like I don't until Drake got in there. I just
- 57:51Speaker 4: didn't feel like they had the horses offensively to be
- 57:54Speaker 4: this great offense. Obviously could have been better than it
- 57:57Speaker 4: was the first month of the season, but it was
- 57:59Speaker 4: hard to say like, oh, well, they should be scoring
- 58:02Speaker 4: twenty seven points a game with Jacob were Set and
- 58:04Speaker 4: that collection of talent. So defensively, I still feel like
- 58:08Speaker 4: they're underachieving. When you have a defensive minded head coach.
- 58:11Speaker 4: I'm gonna put that partially on him and I'm gonna
- 58:13Speaker 4: put it partially on the coordinator, So I have him
- 58:14Speaker 4: both on there. Who's next next?
- 58:17Speaker 2: For me? Jelani tavais just another rough game for him,
- 58:21Speaker 2: and I feel for him. He's playing out of position
- 58:24Speaker 2: right now. He's not in a good spot. But the
- 58:25Speaker 2: Jaguars were picking on him in this game.
- 58:27Speaker 4: Yeah, I had Jelani Devai and I also had Devon
- 58:29Speaker 4: Godshaw in the same category, mainly just because they need
- 58:34Speaker 4: those two guys to be better. As my keys fall
- 58:37Speaker 4: out of my pocket.
- 58:38Speaker 2: Yeah, they need those two guys to be better, right,
- 58:41Speaker 2: Like they those two guys are guys that they're counting on.
- 58:44Speaker 4: Those are their hard hat guys. Those are their circle
- 58:47Speaker 4: the wagon guys. In a lot of ways on the
- 58:49Speaker 4: defensive side of the football. I thought this was a
- 58:52Speaker 4: rare down game this season for Godshow. I think he's
- 58:54Speaker 4: been great outside of this week. He struggled this week,
- 58:57Speaker 4: and teams now in the run game especially, they're starting
- 59:01Speaker 4: a game plan and starting to prepare for him, Like
- 59:03Speaker 4: they know he's a problem, they know he's hard to block,
- 59:05Speaker 4: so now they're throwing a bunch of different things at him,
- 59:08Speaker 4: whether it's doubles, you know, scheme like traps, whams, things
- 59:12Speaker 4: like that on the inside, like just different ways and
- 59:14Speaker 4: angles and different things to get him blocked. He's seeing
- 59:18Speaker 4: a lot of things thrown his way. And by the
- 59:22Speaker 4: end of this game on Sunday, it felt like it
- 59:25Speaker 4: was almost exhausting him, Like he looked tired, like like
- 59:28Speaker 4: trying to mentally process everything that was coming his way.
- 59:32Speaker 4: And then you mentioned Tavai. You know, two big plays
- 59:34Speaker 4: in the passing game. One of them I don't necessarily
- 59:37Speaker 4: put too much on him, like the bootleg across or
- 59:40Speaker 4: early to Gabe Davis, Like that's a tough play for
- 59:42Speaker 4: a linebacker to stick with the receiver coming across the
- 59:45Speaker 4: field like that.
- 59:46Speaker 2: But he got beat on now one.
- 59:48Speaker 4: He got beat on the twenty six yarder too, I
- 59:50Speaker 4: think it was twenty six, twenty three, twenty six to
- 59:52Speaker 4: Christian Kirk over the middle of the field. He missed
- 59:55Speaker 4: two tackles just right in the hole on the ball
- 59:58Speaker 4: in the run game down in the red area. I
- 1:00:01Speaker 4: just he's a good football player.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: He's just not playing like one right now for the
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: reasons you mentioned, And he needs to be better yeah,
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: all right, next.
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: I feel bad about this. Now he's in concussion protocol,
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: but jaylen pol.
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: He's on my list too. Yeah, it's it definitely feels
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: mental at this point. Right And look, I don't think
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: either of so last week he had drops like he
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: just dropped the ball. There's a difference too, to drop
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: in a catchable pass that's not caught like the we
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: had in this game. The defenders made a play on
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: the ball. But top forty, pick a guy that you
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: know is big and physical, and it's like, make a
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: better play on the ball than the defender did. Come
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: down with at least one of those two. And going
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: back and now I think it's mental. I think he
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: has a case of the yips essentially. You know, if
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: I'm the Patriots, I might see like about him talking
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: with sports psychologists or something. Because going back to watching
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: this guy in camp, if you told me he was
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: going to struggle hands would have been my last guess
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: as to why that was. You know, is he gonna
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: be able to get away from defenders, whether that be
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: in the route, whether that be after the catch. You know,
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: is he gonna get over You know, I didn't think
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: it was gonna be not holding on to the football.
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: There were other.
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: Guys in that camp that you definitely worried about their hands.
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: He is not one of them.
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: So and going back to college too. So to me,
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: this feels like a mental thing. And catching the football
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: is supposed to be second nature for these guys. Because
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: you have so much you have to focus on, you
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: don't want to also have to focus and catching the ball.
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: That's why they do two hundred and fifty balls a
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: day on the jugs machine. So it becomes muscle memory,
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: and we start to lose that, it can be a
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: slippery slope. So I think it's mental. He's obviously gonna
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: get it. Seems like he's gonna get the week off
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: this week. I think was there one guy all year
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: that's come back from concussion protocol and played that week.
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: It's probably for the best. I don't wish headed for
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: the best. Well, but well, like I was saying before
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: we knew he's in concussion protocol, like maybe this is
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: a week to just, you know, to use a Bruins parlance,
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: ninth floor, right, just let him kind of take a
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: step back, take it all in, and then get back
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: to it next week. Because the other thing is this
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: is something you can work through on the field, and
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: Drake May has been very supportive of him. Yeah, and
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: Drake May talked about we need to get them targets early,
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: we need to get him targets in space, get him going.
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: But to go back to something we talked.
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: About with with Taekwon Evan, Yeah, when we were doing
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: Tae Kwon back in the summer, was you know what's
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: best for ideally what's best for the receiver and what's
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: best for the quarterback or the same thing. Yeah, I
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: don't know that what's best for Jalen Polk right now
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: is also what's best for Drake May because you need
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: receivers out there that he can count on. And he's
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: talked a lot about still trusting Jalen Polk, but can
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: he really count on him? Tough to say it'd be
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: great if Polk could go back out there and work
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: through it, that's probably not what's best for Drake May
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: and he kind of just have to defer to the quarterback. Yeah.
- 1:02:43Speaker 4: So obviously the drops are contested drops I would call them.
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: Because this week, last week they were out right right.
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: This week was more of catchable balls. He didn't catch
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: the corner route that Drake May's throw. Drake May throws
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: to him where he gets clocked by the safety. It's late,
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: it's a little inside, it's not a great throw.
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: I'm thinking about more of that first one.
- 1:03:03Speaker 4: So the first one on the bootleg. Yeah, so the
- 1:03:07Speaker 4: first one on the bootleg. And this is more of
- 1:03:09Speaker 4: what I wanted to talk about with Jalen Polk. My
- 1:03:12Speaker 4: the thing to me with Jalen Polk, on top of
- 1:03:14Speaker 4: the fact that the hands have been a little bit suspect,
- 1:03:17Speaker 4: like I don't really love the routes either, Like to me,
- 1:03:23Speaker 4: that route, first of all, he's late out of the
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: gate and on that play, like he just is late
- 1:03:27Speaker 4: into the route. And when you're late into the route, now,
- 1:03:34Speaker 4: Hunter Henry, it's like think about like in baseball when
- 1:03:37Speaker 4: you're running the bases and like somebody is behind you
- 1:03:41Speaker 4: and is like catching up to you right on the
- 1:03:43Speaker 4: base pass because you had to maybe go back to
- 1:03:47Speaker 4: the base to tag up or like thinking of tagging.
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: Up or something like that. So Jalen Polk's late out
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: of the blocks on that play. So now he's running
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: the corner and Hunter Henry's running the crosser on the
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: bootleg and they end up in the same place. They
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: almost end up colliding into each other. So the spacing
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: is off on the play because of the route that
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: jalen Polk ran. There's another play, the kJ Osborne near
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: interception Drake may and not play. He starts with his
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: eyes outside to the one on one to Jalen Polk.
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: Jalen Polk just gets bodied into the ground against press coverage,
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: like can't get off the line of scrimmage and ends
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: up falling, like going to the ground, getting bullied into
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: the dirt by press coverage. Those things are happening on
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: top of the fact that he's dropping passes like so oh,
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: there's a lot in this film from Jalen Polk and
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: he was on my list too. As you can probably tell,
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: there's a lot on this film from Jalen Polk that
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: was not good. A lot like not just him dropping passes,
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: but just bad poor routes. It doesn't seem like he's focused,
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: like you know, the ball snapped and he's late out
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: of his out of his starting gate, like what what
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: are we doing? Like what what are we doing?
- 1:05:00Speaker 4: So it is it's absolutely time for him and I again,
- 1:05:03Speaker 4: I didn't want it to be injury related, like no
- 1:05:06Speaker 4: one's wishing injury on the player at all, but it's
- 1:05:11Speaker 4: it's definitely time for him to take a seat and
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: watch for a couple of weeks because it's details. It's
- 1:05:17Speaker 4: not it's catching the ball, it's route running, it's timing,
- 1:05:21Speaker 4: it's spacing, it's getting off press coverage, like all of it,
- 1:05:25Speaker 4: all of it has just not been good going on
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: a couple of weeks.
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: Now, Yeah, I wonder if it's time for Javon Baker
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: to maybe get another look. Yeah this week, And we
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: can get into that when we get to the Jets.
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: But I would give Javon Baker.
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: And other shots.
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: All right, I have one more, Yeah, I have one
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: more too, Okay, go ahead, special teams. Oh yeah, and
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: specifically this one sequence. Yeah, So there's been a lot made.
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: We're talking about this out of practice actually, of the
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: decision whether or not to go for two when they
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: did right, and do you want to know you know
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: you go forward early, you know what you have? Do
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: you just kick it? Make it a one score game?
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: You risk if you don't get the two point conversion. Now,
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: maybe you're out of time. And I get why people
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: are worked up about that. You know I would have
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: kicked the extra point. Surprise, surprise, right. I disagree with
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: the nerds. I understand the reasoning behind it, though, I
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: like usual with the nerds, I can't get fired up
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: about that. Take one way or the other them. Yeah,
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: and I'll tell you why why were the Patriots chasing
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: that point? Do you remember?
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: Because this hasn't been talked about this week, like at all?
- 1:06:26Speaker 7: No?
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: So why why were they down fifteen instead of fourteen?
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: Well? First, right, so, well, first they allowed a ninety
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: six yard punt return touchdown. Don't do that, like, just
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: don't do that? Be better? Bar coverage, right, Barringer over
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: out kicks his coverage. Del Pettis doesn't fill the lane.
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: I think there are a couple other I think Marcellus
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: Dial maybe Bleu an assignment in there as well. Don't
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: allow that, like don't but like, okay, guys, like the
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: other team makes plays, all right, you allow a touchdown
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: on the ensuing extra point. Jilanni to Vy lines up
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: in the neutral zone. Yeah, this is also why he
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: was on my downs list, but I was saving it
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: for this part. Nice. It is week seven, This is
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: a pat Yeah, and Jelani to Vy lines up in
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: the neutral zone. If he doesn't do that, the Jaguars
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: ki kick the extra point. The Patriots are down fourteen.
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: You know they're not chasing that point. It doesn't become
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: a discussion. They don't fail the two point conversion.
- 1:07:24Speaker 3: But he does. The Jaguars, all right, we're gonna get
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: the ball to one.
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: They go for the two like they capitalize on the opportunity,
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: and now the Patriots are chasing one point. The entire
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: game script is altered from that point because seven weeks in,
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: you can't line up on sides on a pat.
- 1:07:42Speaker 3: Well, this is where you roll your eyes and both
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: special teams a little. But the entire game was altered
- 1:07:49Speaker 3: by because he lined up half a yard off sides.
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: They gave up points on special teams. Yeah, it's not
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: just giving up a point if they gave up eight,
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: not seven. Like I said my part about the punt return,
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: I don't mean to excuse that. I said my point
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: about the two point conversion, and people though I gave
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: this rant to a friend. Oh, you're just trying to
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: let the coaching staff off the hook. Yeah, no, no,
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: it's week seven. You can't get lined upright on a
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: pat like that reflects on the coaching staff as much
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: as it or more than it reflects on the player,
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: especially after Drodmeo came out last week and talked about
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: limiting penalties again that one play they were chasing that
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: point the entire game. It completely impacted the way both
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: teams approached the You cannot have that. They when I
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: talk about the margin frere, right, the margin frere this
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: team has, it's one point, Like, it's that one point,
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: it's that half yard lining up off sides on a pad.
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: It's not worth it. You can't do it.
- 1:08:44Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, it's a great point. And you know
- 1:08:46Speaker 4: I let you do special teams, but the.
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: Bigger special teams and games scripts.
- 1:08:52Speaker 4: But the big reason why I let you do special teams, though,
- 1:08:55Speaker 4: is that to me, special teams is past fail every
- 1:08:58Speaker 4: single week. Either you did your jobs on special teams,
- 1:09:02Speaker 4: and your job could just be simply as making the layups,
- 1:09:04Speaker 4: like you can't the extra points and you hit the
- 1:09:06Speaker 4: field goals and you don't give up any big plays
- 1:09:09Speaker 4: in the in the kick.
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: Coverage, but you can't.
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: You can't have failure, especially catastrophic failure over the ninety
- 1:09:15Speaker 4: six yard punt return like you can't. It has to
- 1:09:18Speaker 4: be you have to pass. But I don't need you
- 1:09:21Speaker 4: to be this like dynamic special teams unit to like suffice,
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: you know what I mean, Like you don't have to
- 1:09:27Speaker 4: be like you know, Prime Bears with Devin Hester from
- 1:09:30Speaker 4: to be like oh, like good enough, like you know,
- 1:09:32Speaker 4: but you can't fail on special teams. You can't have
- 1:09:35Speaker 4: a special teams actively losing.
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: It's special teams. And it's also I guess I should
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: say some game management stuff too, right again, you know,
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: chasing that point.
- 1:09:42Speaker 3: You know what else?
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: What did they do at the end of the first half, Evan,
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: They screwed up the situation again, same situation and the
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: Jaguars sat.
- 1:09:49Speaker 3: On the ball so they didn't get burned. But yeah,
- 1:09:51Speaker 3: that's four times.
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: In seven weeks they've managed that situation the same way.
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: I have a twenty five percent hit rate, and the
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: only reason they hit once is because Drake made made
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: two unbelievable throws to bail out Alex Van Pelt. Like
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: the game management stuff. I talked about this a little
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: bit last week that I was worried with Van Pelt
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: coming from that Shanahan tree and these guys are just
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: not good with it, like they're not, and the game
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: management to get the game script management continues to get
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: away from them.
- 1:10:18Speaker 4: Okay, really quickly on the last one for me, you
- 1:10:21Speaker 4: got to put some offensive linemen on this list when
- 1:10:23Speaker 4: you can't run the first ball.
- 1:10:25Speaker 3: It's true, well, I said, line of scrimmage both ways.
- 1:10:27Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, So I'm not to on him exclusively, but
- 1:10:32Speaker 4: Citi so was rough in this game. I had him
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: with five quarterback pressures, allowed a hit, four hurries, struggled
- 1:10:39Speaker 4: in the run game, didn't move people off the line
- 1:10:41Speaker 4: of scrimmage very well, nobody really did, to be fair
- 1:10:43Speaker 4: of him, but you know, he struggled. I thought mightily
- 1:10:47Speaker 4: on this film, this really hasn't been the same guy
- 1:10:51Speaker 4: since that injury in training camp to his ankle, right,
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: I think his ankle in Washington in the last preseason game. Yes,
- 1:10:56Speaker 4: and he hasn't really been the same guy. Like it
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: seems like his power is like sap from him. So
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: maybe he's still not physically one hundred percent and that's
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: a reason why. But to me, it more looks like
- 1:11:09Speaker 4: his technique has completely fallen apart, like he was got
- 1:11:11Speaker 4: at a rhythm with it. From the injury, and now
- 1:11:14Speaker 4: his technique has fallen apart his pad level, you know,
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: leveraging blox hands things like that just hasn't been good enough.
- 1:11:22Speaker 4: I didn't think Michael Jordan was great in this game either.
- 1:11:24Speaker 4: I thought both guards got pushed around by Jacksonville. But
- 1:11:28Speaker 4: Eric Armstead's like City so just had his hands full.
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: Their Armstead, their best lineman right now is a guy
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: they got off a practice squad two weeks ago.
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: And Ben Brown yeah, yeah, you know, look to his credit.
- 1:11:41Speaker 4: I thought that I thought Trey Jacobs was okay, Like,
- 1:11:45Speaker 4: given the circumstances and given the expectation, I thought he
- 1:11:49Speaker 4: was okay at left tackle, and I thought on when
- 1:11:51Speaker 4: who was decent at right tackle?
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: Again? But the two.
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: Guards, we were brutal. They both really struggled in this game.
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:11:59Speaker 4: I know I've been leaving people on hold for a while,
- 1:12:01Speaker 4: So let's get to these phones. Patty is an agua
- 1:12:04Speaker 4: on what's up? Patty's Hey, how's it going.
- 1:12:11Speaker 7: Good? Hell?
- 1:12:11Speaker 8: Are you guys doing good?
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: Good? Good? What you got so?
- 1:12:16Speaker 8: Evan? You kind of brought up one thing I wanted
- 1:12:18Speaker 8: to talk about with the run defense, Is it really
- 1:12:20Speaker 8: just effort and want to or is there any way
- 1:12:22Speaker 8: they can like scheme something up to try and look better.
- 1:12:26Speaker 8: I mean, brief and Alan, they scared the hell out
- 1:12:33Speaker 8: of me. I mean they they didn't run over. I
- 1:12:36Speaker 8: mean they ran on us pretty good on week three,
- 1:12:39Speaker 8: but I think the run defense since week three has
- 1:12:41Speaker 8: just gotten progressively worse, even with you know, Juwan with
- 1:12:44Speaker 8: no Juwan Bentley in week three. And the other question
- 1:12:49Speaker 8: I had was, I'm I'm starting to move the goalpost
- 1:12:54Speaker 8: towards possibly taking like Ted McMillan and maybe you know,
- 1:12:59Speaker 8: jumping back into the first and taking like Heiresee or
- 1:13:03Speaker 8: somebody like that or Josh Simmons from Ohio State. I
- 1:13:05Speaker 8: wanted to know your guys' thoughts on that. I know
- 1:13:08Speaker 8: offensive tackles a priority, but we keep hearing these things
- 1:13:12Speaker 8: about well Campbell, how he doesn't have arm length. And
- 1:13:16Speaker 8: I don't know if you watched the game, Evan Alex,
- 1:13:18Speaker 8: I know you did, but uh yeah, Banks struggled pretty
- 1:13:21Speaker 8: good against Georgia last week. And that's all I got.
- 1:13:23Speaker 8: I'll take it off there, guys.
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: Thanks for the call. Patty.
- 1:13:26Speaker 4: So to the first one, like run defense, I personally
- 1:13:29Speaker 4: feel that run defense. Let's and this this is the
- 1:13:33Speaker 4: x's and no's guys telling you. So this is how
- 1:13:36Speaker 4: you know that this is really true. I would say
- 1:13:38Speaker 4: run defenses. Let's call it seventy five to eighty percent mentality,
- 1:13:43Speaker 4: like just physical, want to effort mentality. Now the things
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: that they could do. The easiest thing to do is
- 1:13:55Speaker 4: to run blitz right. But if you're gonna run blitz
- 1:13:58Speaker 4: which is basically the same as blitzing in terms of passing,
- 1:14:02Speaker 4: and drop him back to pass, but you're basically just
- 1:14:05Speaker 4: gonna shoot a guy through a gap, right, Like if
- 1:14:08Speaker 4: you want to shoot an ab usually it's one of
- 1:14:10Speaker 4: the a's or the B gaps.
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: You fire him through the A of the B gap.
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: You rotate the safety behind him into his gap.
- 1:14:16Speaker 4: You know that he's leaving from off the ball, and
- 1:14:19Speaker 4: you kind of replace him in the in the runfit
- 1:14:21Speaker 4: that way with one of your safeties.
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: Like, that's doable.
- 1:14:25Speaker 4: Slanting the line right, so like instead of going right
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: vertical at a block, you slant or knife into a
- 1:14:32Speaker 4: gap or across the face of the defender or the blocker,
- 1:14:35Speaker 4: excuse me, Like that's doable. You can slant the line
- 1:14:38Speaker 4: of scrimmage.
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: You can also.
- 1:14:42Speaker 4: Go with even front or one gap principles, right, like
- 1:14:45Speaker 4: the Patriots are typically a two gaping defense. There is
- 1:14:49Speaker 4: that ability to just you have the A gap, I
- 1:14:52Speaker 4: have the B gap, and we're firing off the ball
- 1:14:55Speaker 4: and we're going up the field. They I would put
- 1:14:59Speaker 4: you know me personally, I would like to see them
- 1:15:02Speaker 4: running with some more even gap mechanics and some more
- 1:15:04Speaker 4: one gap with four down defensive linemen. I think that
- 1:15:07Speaker 4: that could be more effective, mainly because usually teams at
- 1:15:13Speaker 4: one gap are because they have smaller guys. And when
- 1:15:17Speaker 4: I look at their front now without bar More, without
- 1:15:21Speaker 4: Lawrence Guy, without Jwan Bentley, I see a small front.
- 1:15:27Speaker 4: And so you have guys like a quality Roy Roberts.
- 1:15:32Speaker 4: You know these guys are playing a lot or Johnson,
- 1:15:35Speaker 4: not Roberts.
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: Excuse me, yeah, Miss ninety six is right, yeah Johnson
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: Christian ellis like playing at the second level.
- 1:15:45Speaker 4: Like those guys are smaller players. So maybe having those
- 1:15:49Speaker 4: guys get up the field instead of trying to take
- 1:15:52Speaker 4: on box but going through the line of scrimmage up
- 1:15:55Speaker 4: the field might be better when you have those types
- 1:15:58Speaker 4: of players, like when you have beefy dudes, bar More Guy, Godshaw, Bentley,
- 1:16:04Speaker 4: t Viy like Jennings, like those guys can two gap
- 1:16:07Speaker 4: and they can hold up the wall and build that
- 1:16:10Speaker 4: the wall as it's you know Belichick used to call it,
- 1:16:12Speaker 4: and all that. They don't necessarily, in my opinion, have
- 1:16:15Speaker 4: the personnel to be a great two gapping front right now.
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: So one way or the other when it comes down,
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: is just basically throwing bodies at the problem, which is
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: the answer that you're either gonna blitz or you're gonna
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: put more players on line of scrimmage to begin with.
- 1:16:25Speaker 3: But when you do that, you know, it makes things
- 1:16:28Speaker 3: tougher in coverage.
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: As to the second part of his question, yea, So
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: we had talked about McMillan and ear See a couple
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: of shows ago. You were supposed to watch him against
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: Michigan you didn't. That's gonna be a real talking point again,
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: Like we still have ball off to play. So I'm
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: not you know, I'm not coming out with any mock
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: draft just yet, but it's definitely something to you know,
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: both guys. At this point, to me, it's about who
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: are the names Patriots fans should know, and Arianta Eersy
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: wasn't necessarily somebody who was on that list. At the
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: beginning of the year, Ted McMillan was even if he
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: wanted to tackle. It was like, well, this guy's gonna.
- 1:17:01Speaker 3: Be a top ten pick. Be aware of him.
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: Air C now is definitely on the list. The question
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: is does he move up too high. The other guy
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: he mentioned was Josh Simmons, who's left tackle from Ohio State,
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: who kind of came out and I don't want to
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: say came out of nowhere, but like he was a
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: really hot riser, high riser through the.
- 1:17:17Speaker 3: Start of the season.
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: He was having a really good year flying up draft boards.
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: He suffered a non contact knee injury last week. Is
- 1:17:24Speaker 2: kind of nasty looking. He's out for the year. Look
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: put out some good tape. Definitely was impressive For a
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: Patriots team that needs an infusion of talent. Even though
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: the upside's there a guy that's coming off of something
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: like that, they just can't afford to take that risk.
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: They can't realistically he's going to go in the same
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: around the same range as Airs, Like, that's the guy
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: if you want to do that. If you're somebody wh
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: wants Ted McMillan and you think he's the answer, it's
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: you know, moved down a little bit. If you can
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: get McMillan, whatever you get from moving down, you use
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: to move back up from thirty four, and that's what
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: you get IERC Like that would be what that would
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: look like to me, Simmons is because it's college, like,
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: we don't know what the injury is. I would be
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: shocked if it's not. Just watching it, I'm not a doctor,
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: but broken something well, I'm thinking like multiple ligaments kind
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: of thing, like it definitely gave the vibe of like
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: an acl and then is basically he goes to plant
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: like he's dropping back in a pass that and he
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: goes to plant and his knee just completely bupps.
- 1:18:27Speaker 3: I thought it was an achilles watching it live.
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: It's being reported as in but like that kind of
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: thing where I'm just like, you know, best of luck
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: to the kid. That's more a spot for a team
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: that you know, a guy like the Niners, they're gonna
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: get tagged him a lot. Trent Williams finishes out, you know,
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: whatever he has left, and then you have this kid
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: ready for a team that needs an instant infusion of talent,
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: a guy coming off a blown knee when there's other
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: options available shouldn't be the answer.
- 1:18:51Speaker 4: So like, just philosophically quickly, because I haven't done deep
- 1:18:54Speaker 4: dives into any of these guys yet, as you know.
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: Just philosophically.
- 1:18:58Speaker 4: I The part that I guess gets me with the
- 1:19:02Speaker 4: whole conversation is like, how many years are we going
- 1:19:07Speaker 4: to just throw like like low level assets at tackle?
- 1:19:14Speaker 4: Like a low level is probably the wrong word because
- 1:19:16Speaker 4: it could be a high second round pick or something,
- 1:19:18Speaker 4: but like, how many years are we going to basically
- 1:19:22Speaker 4: take a flyer at tackle and essentially kick the can
- 1:19:26Speaker 4: down the road again at left tackle for a a
- 1:19:30Speaker 4: shiny new tool.
- 1:19:31Speaker 3: So let me be clear about this. Let me be
- 1:19:33Speaker 3: clear about this.
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: You are not getting a franchise left tackle in the
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: veteran market, free agent, trade, whatever, and they need a
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: franchise left tackle.
- 1:19:42Speaker 4: They do not need a great We've been talking about
- 1:19:45Speaker 4: them needing a franchise left tackle basically since it was
- 1:19:49Speaker 4: proven at Isaiah Winners.
- 1:19:51Speaker 3: As long as you and I have been covering the team.
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: I say this right, So every year they need a
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: potential franchise left tackle. They cannot do a bridge again
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: at that position, not with Drake May. So let me
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: be clear about this. As I give this take about
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: Ted McMillan, I think Arianta Earc has franchise tackle upside.
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: The difference is he does not have the floor that
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: will Campbell and Kelvin bent to.
- 1:20:14Speaker 3: But he's close.
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: Like these guys are are three year starters who have
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: been starting since they are true freshmen. You have a
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: really clear idea of who these two guys are. I
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: just feel as ear C there's a little more grace.
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: He's not his experienced physical upside. So I am not
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: saying this lightly to say, well, you need a wide
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: receiver and then you figure out tackle later. Like if
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: it's like that, that whole tech McMillan thing for me
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: is so predicated on you trade back up into the
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: twenties and you still get a potential franchise tackle. It's
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: not you wait to thirty four and see if Wyatt
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: Maglam maybe falls to you, or maybe the kid from
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: Ohio State falls to you after the injury.
- 1:20:53Speaker 3: That's not a well, okay, well what if we make
- 1:20:56Speaker 3: it work this way?
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: No, it's a very specific way that would have to
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: work because, like you said, they cannot kick the can
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: down the road to tackle again. You need a guy
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: that comes in looking like he's going to be your
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: tackle for the next ten years. Is there a way
- 1:21:08Speaker 2: to get that guy? And Tet McMillan, there might be,
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: might be because Earc's looked impressive. We got like, like
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: I said, there's still football left to play. I'm hardly
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: locking this take in. Calvin Banks had a bad game
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: against Georgia. I'll say that the guy who is facing
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: for most of the game, Michael Williams, is going to
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: be a top ten pick like and he wasn't healthy either,
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: like stud and look, those are kind of guys are
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: gonna need a block in the NFL. I don't mean
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: to excuse that, but I still probably give Banks a
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: shot even with the rough game.
- 1:21:37Speaker 3: If he has more rough games. Again, I reserve the
- 1:21:39Speaker 3: right to change my mind.
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: But if you're unsure, and I'm a little more unsure
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: about the tackles now than I was in say August,
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: you could if Iersey really comes out and like Senior,
- 1:21:51Speaker 2: he's got to go to Senior Bowl. Senior Bowl checks
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: the boxes, combine impressive interviews well and Teed McMillan is
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: the guy we think he is. If you tell me
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: you can get a package of those two guys. I
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: might be sold on it because I still think you're
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: coming away with the potential franchise tackle. If it's well
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: Josh Simmons off a blown knee or while why probably
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: at Bard or whatever. Now I'm like, no, no, you
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: don't have They have to come out of this draft
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: with the potential franchise tackle. If ere C is one, Okay,
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: If he's not, then you throw the whole tech McMillan
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: thing out.
- 1:22:20Speaker 4: I just feel like you're really splitting an atom there where,
- 1:22:23Speaker 4: like you're trying.
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: You're really you're trying to hit a real tight window
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: throw right. Well, these dominos have to fall exactly how
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: we think they're gonna fall to make this happen.
- 1:22:37Speaker 3: We talked about this.
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: How much do you trust Elliott Wolf at this point
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: to do well? We talked about this last year when
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: people wanted to trade down for the quarterback, right, I said,
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: are you willing to bet your job on it? I'm
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: not willing to bet my job on Arianta Airc yet
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: and being able to find him with the trade down, yeah,
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: maybe I'll get there. This is why I need you
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: to watch him to tell me be more realistic, because
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: you have better I for this stuff, Thann. I think
- 1:22:54Speaker 2: he's a pretty good player, Like he's a pretty good prospect.
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: He's a clear tier two tackle potential. Like who are
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: the guys last year? Like a Mary's He's not in
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: the Joe alt Olufa Shanu category, but like a Mary's Mims,
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: j C. Latham who there was another guy in that
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: cool Tyler Guyton who I really liked, like not necessarily
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: player to player comp but like that tier of player.
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: And we said last year, like if they walked away
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: with Tyler Geyton, we would have felt good. If they
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: walked away with the Mims, I think we had different
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: opinions on but like that kind of player, we would
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: have felt good. If he's that kind of player, we
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: can have the conversation about Ted McMillan.
- 1:23:27Speaker 3: If he's not.
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: You can't, to your point, you can't take less than
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: a tackle this year, you can't do it. You cannot
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: do it. All right, let's get back to Ashen in Canada. Ashton,
- 1:23:38Speaker 2: what's up, hey, guys, how are you doing? Yeah? Thanks
- 1:23:42Speaker 2: for wayde Yeah.
- 1:23:43Speaker 9: Of course, I just wanted to get your guys thoughts
- 1:23:45Speaker 9: and what you've been seeing out of Martin MAFU this year.
- 1:23:49Speaker 9: I've been watching him a little bit. Kind of looks
- 1:23:52Speaker 9: like maybe some mixed bag results from what I've mis seeing,
- 1:23:55Speaker 9: but I'm kind of excited about he can be in
- 1:23:56Speaker 9: the next couple of years and then a couple more
- 1:23:59Speaker 9: prospects for you guys. Just wanted to just killed in
- 1:24:01Speaker 9: the Harold Bannon A tight end from Bowling Green. Pretty
- 1:24:05Speaker 9: fun player, Pretty exciting to think about Drake Drake May
- 1:24:09Speaker 9: throwing him the ball and then Bowland Pierce is the
- 1:24:13Speaker 9: other one offensive tackle from Rutgers. Just an absolute sulking tackle,
- 1:24:18Speaker 9: moves pretty well. Be kind of fun to see him
- 1:24:20Speaker 9: in Peter system. Just want to see what you pissed thought.
- 1:24:24Speaker 4: Thanks for the call, Ashen, and thanks for holding it
- 1:24:27Speaker 4: again in terms of first question with Mapoo, and then
- 1:24:31Speaker 4: I'll let you answer the second question.
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: Mapoo.
- 1:24:34Speaker 4: I am intrigued by the physical traits that he brings
- 1:24:37Speaker 4: to the table. I think right now mentally he's swimming
- 1:24:41Speaker 4: in it.
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: A little bit, you know.
- 1:24:43Speaker 4: Get just getting pulled out of passing lanes with play
- 1:24:46Speaker 4: action has been an issue last couple of weeks. This
- 1:24:49Speaker 4: week on the BTJ bomb that we were talking about earlier.
- 1:24:53Speaker 4: I'm not like one hundred percent sure Mapu's assignment sound there.
- 1:24:57Speaker 4: I don't know if he necessarily played that correctly, but
- 1:25:00Speaker 4: those are like mental errors to me, not physical.
- 1:25:03Speaker 2: So I'm intrigued that by the more the more that
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: he plays and the more he downloads into the computer,
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: because I do think he's a really smart kid, and
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: I've talked to him about football a lot, and I
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: think he's a really smart quick study, and right now
- 1:25:18Speaker 2: he's just kind of learning on the fly, learning on
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: the job. He hasn't practiced a ton in training camp
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: over the last couple of years either. That probably hasn't helped.
- 1:25:27Speaker 4: So the more experience that he gets intrigued by the
- 1:25:31Speaker 4: skill set, I think that he's really you know, I've
- 1:25:33Speaker 4: been intrigued by the skill set for a while. A
- 1:25:35Speaker 4: guy that could play at the second level of a defense,
- 1:25:37Speaker 4: play at the third level of a defense, play a
- 1:25:39Speaker 4: little safety, play a little linebacker, play a little bit
- 1:25:42Speaker 4: in the slot. He's got that kind of versatility and
- 1:25:46Speaker 4: you know, just to wrap up that take, like, we
- 1:25:48Speaker 4: don't really know right now the future for Jabriel Peppers
- 1:25:52Speaker 4: with this team. If Jabriel Peppers is out of this picture,
- 1:25:56Speaker 4: then I definitely think that Mapu has a similar type
- 1:25:59Speaker 4: of skill set that could fill in for that and
- 1:26:02Speaker 4: be that guy next to Duggar.
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: Yeah, So I've liked what I've seen from him. The
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: biggest thing for me, like he came right back off
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: I R and was physical. Yeah, And we spent the
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: first hour there there's no doubt about his physical ability.
- 1:26:13Speaker 2: We spent the first hour of the show talking about
- 1:26:15Speaker 2: how this team's not physical enough. Yeah, and they're missing
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: part of physicalities. Like there's guys that set the tone,
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: like a guy like Juwan Bentley who has that respect,
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: who has that pedigree, is gonna come out and play
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: a certain way, and guy's gonna gravitate towards playing that way.
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: And they're missing that tone setter on defense because Pepper's
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: another tone setter. They lost him. Cheu Dawn's another tone setter.
- 1:26:32Speaker 2: Obviously he's not even anymore so Mapu because he's a
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: younger guy. You know, he's got to grow into that
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: leadership role. But like he's been a tone setter for
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: them defense. So I really I've really liked what I've
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: seen from him. A little bit of a drop off
- 1:26:44Speaker 2: last week, but those first two games back, I thought
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: he was you know, maybe their best defensive player.
- 1:26:48Speaker 4: Yeah, I'll take mental errors. If you're playing fast, Like
- 1:26:51Speaker 4: if you're playing fast and you're playing physical, but you're
- 1:26:54Speaker 4: just not quite there as a young player in this
- 1:26:56Speaker 4: league mentally, then we can we can teach mentally, right,
- 1:27:00Speaker 4: we can't. He can't teach you know, six two six three?
- 1:27:03Speaker 4: Uh with a four five four six or whatever it
- 1:27:06Speaker 4: is that he ran, Like, you can't you can't teach that.
- 1:27:08Speaker 4: What what about the prospects you like?
- 1:27:10Speaker 2: Any of those?
- 1:27:11Speaker 3: So the guy from Rutgers is just like huge. Uh,
- 1:27:14Speaker 3: he's one of these guys.
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: It's just like massive. And look, they need more than
- 1:27:17Speaker 2: one tackle, they need depth. You know, I'm always a
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: fan of like, oh, three hundred sixty pounds tackle. Yeah,
- 1:27:23Speaker 2: take him and take him late on day three and
- 1:27:25Speaker 2: something you can do with them. But he's not like
- 1:27:27Speaker 2: an answer or anything interesting player. I haven't done a
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: ton on him, just because those guys I usually get
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: into were more like January February, Harold Fannon is a
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: fun one, right Bowling Green. When's the last time we
- 1:27:39Speaker 2: talked about a Bowling Green player? Like just kind of
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: pure eliete receiving tight end a little undersized, good athlete.
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: I know people probably hear that and think Shaheen Bell.
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: Know he's like a better player, much more polished player,
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: more of a true receiving tight end. He's gonna we'll
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: see what his Senior Bowl is gonna be big for him.
- 1:28:00Speaker 2: Right now, he's projected top one hundred. I think that's
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: a little rich for them for a tight end if
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: they are going to go in that range and this
- 1:28:07Speaker 2: guy a little higher but similar range. Tyler Warren from
- 1:28:11Speaker 2: Penn State, Yeah, he can play. Snapped it.
- 1:28:14Speaker 3: He snapped it, and he caught a touchdown on the pass.
- 1:28:17Speaker 3: He snapped it.
- 1:28:18Speaker 2: Bill Belichapick, I mean Penn State tight end, Like, what
- 1:28:21Speaker 2: more do I need to say?
- 1:28:22Speaker 6: Right?
- 1:28:23Speaker 3: Good player? And then I'm still interested. He's had a
- 1:28:25Speaker 3: little bit of a down year. I still love the
- 1:28:28Speaker 3: idea of because it's it's a develop mental play. You're
- 1:28:31Speaker 3: not drafting a tight end for this year. He's still
- 1:28:32Speaker 3: hunter Henry.
- 1:28:33Speaker 2: Who's been good. So who can you get on Day three?
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: And tight end also traditionally is like the slowest developing
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: position tight ends Sam Laporta, except Sam Laporta is a freak.
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: Tight Ends produce less as rookies than any other position
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: besides quarterback, which is obviously like a unique thing. I
- 1:28:50Speaker 2: still can't get over the idea of Bryson Nesbit, who's
- 1:28:52Speaker 2: had a down year, So do you go get him
- 1:28:55Speaker 2: later on day three out of UNC put him back
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: with Drake May.
- 1:28:58Speaker 3: Yeah, he gets a year to truly.
- 1:29:00Speaker 2: Develop behind the scenes, like I'm gonna be a big
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: Bryson Nesbit guy during the draft. I'll just warn you
- 1:29:05Speaker 2: right now, I'm so into that concept.
- 1:29:08Speaker 4: I'm into it too, I actually am. And the other
- 1:29:11Speaker 4: guy too is it's Hampton, right, the running back of Hampton?
- 1:29:15Speaker 3: Yeah, so he mentioned Rutgers. I wanted to say this.
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: I I got to look up what you're this guy is,
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: so I'll let you talk for a second. I think
- 1:29:22Speaker 2: he's draft eligible. They have a running back who is
- 1:29:27Speaker 2: a and you remember how much I liked Isaiah Checko
- 1:29:30Speaker 2: coming out there, Like I was crushed. I thought I
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: had found like a diamond because nobody's talking about it
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: and dim Andy Reid right and the two people. Okay,
- 1:29:40Speaker 2: so Kylemanong guy is a senior like really similar player. Yeah, quick,
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: shifty runs, angry, can catch the football like, isn't shy
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: and he he can, he can take a big workload,
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: he can be involved. Kylemanong, guy, you watch this guy
- 1:29:58Speaker 2: when you watch Rutgers, Like he looks different. He looks
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: he like you're watching Rutgers. You're all right, you know
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: it's a you know, lower tier Big ten team.
- 1:30:06Speaker 3: Whatever.
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: He looks like he should be at Iowa or at
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: Wisconsin or at Michigan. The dude can play that. He's physical,
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: he's a tone, and he's shifting in the open field like, uh,
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: kyleman On, guy's another one. We'll see where he goes.
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: This running back class is so stacked. This is a
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: guy that normally we would talk about being a top
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: one hundred pick and you would row your eyes and
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: be like, they can't, they can't. Whatever that's true. You
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: might be get him like one fifty. We'll see how
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: some of this other the rest of his class shakes
- 1:30:34Speaker 2: out with that. Remember the wide receiver class spending all
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: last year time on running backs all Remember the wide
- 1:30:39Speaker 2: receiver class last year. How we were just like, oh
- 1:30:41Speaker 2: my god, like this is insane. It was insane.
- 1:30:43Speaker 3: That's the running backs this year?
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: Great?
- 1:30:46Speaker 4: Uh really quickly, just though the two North Carolina.
- 1:30:49Speaker 3: Kids yeah, so, but Hampton's good too.
- 1:30:51Speaker 2: I'd like Hampton too.
- 1:30:52Speaker 4: S So both of them ran routes for Drake May
- 1:30:55Speaker 4: at his per day, and I was impressed with both guys.
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: I thought both guys really moved very really really well.
- 1:31:02Speaker 4: I think like Hampton would be in nice you know,
- 1:31:04Speaker 4: not to push Antonio Gibson out necessarily, but like a
- 1:31:07Speaker 4: nice complimenter Andre Stevenson and uh Nes bit right a
- 1:31:11Speaker 4: tight end. Yeah, I mean Drake May and at his
- 1:31:14Speaker 4: pro day was rifling some throws up the seam to
- 1:31:17Speaker 4: that kid that I think he's gonna be a good
- 1:31:19Speaker 4: player in the league.
- 1:31:20Speaker 3: Well, so I will say this on Hampton.
- 1:31:21Speaker 2: The reason I'm less excited about that, I just said,
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: we can have fun with kalhim and on guy because
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: he's going to go on a spot where the Patriots
- 1:31:26Speaker 2: can take him.
- 1:31:27Speaker 3: Yeah, Hampton might end up being top one hundred.
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: Yeah, he's a good player.
- 1:31:30Speaker 3: So that that might be, especially for you, a little
- 1:31:33Speaker 3: less realistic.
- 1:31:33Speaker 2: All right, Todd is in North Carolina. What's up, Todd?
- 1:31:38Speaker 5: Hey, gentlemen, can hear me?
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: Yes, yep? What you got?
- 1:31:41Speaker 5: Perfect? So I've been listening to the playbook and I'm
- 1:31:44Speaker 5: getting kind of tired of mister rook keeps saying that
- 1:31:47Speaker 5: we're in the business of winning, winning, winning. They're in
- 1:31:51Speaker 5: the business of building a team. That's what this is about.
- 1:31:54Speaker 5: You're not going to get to winning. They keeps skipping that.
- 1:31:57Speaker 5: And I'm thought back a bit, and I think that
- 1:31:59Speaker 5: Bill might have been in that same business for the
- 1:32:01Speaker 5: last couple of years, casing records and stuff, and that's
- 1:32:04Speaker 5: why he drafted players that weren't weren't going to build
- 1:32:09Speaker 5: a team, but might actually help him win right there
- 1:32:12Speaker 5: and then. And now we've got to be patient and
- 1:32:14Speaker 5: try to build the team. And that includes the coaches,
- 1:32:16Speaker 5: because we got our rookie offensive play caller, we got
- 1:32:20Speaker 5: a rookie coach, we've got a rookie defensive player caller,
- 1:32:24Speaker 5: and a rookie quarterback. And everybody's complaining. Boston media seems
- 1:32:29Speaker 5: to be most horrible I've ever seen when it comes
- 1:32:31Speaker 5: to being impatient and let stuff work. So I don't
- 1:32:35Speaker 5: know what you guys feel, but I don't think you
- 1:32:38Speaker 5: are in the business of winning. You're in the business
- 1:32:39Speaker 5: of building a team. I'll take the answer up there.
- 1:32:42Speaker 2: Thanks guys, Thanks Todd, And look, I get what Todd
- 1:32:45Speaker 2: is saying Noel belichickism, it's not about collecting talent, it's
- 1:32:47Speaker 2: about these Yeah.
- 1:32:48Speaker 4: But I think he's also meant you're just saying, you know,
- 1:32:51Speaker 4: the expectations for the team this year, we're low and
- 1:32:54Speaker 4: now here we are at one and six, and everybody's
- 1:32:57Speaker 4: is jumping off the boat right like, and everyone's raaking out,
- 1:33:01Speaker 4: And I get what he is saying. I guess my
- 1:33:04Speaker 4: only pushback to what he was saying is that you
- 1:33:09Speaker 4: can be a four to five win football team as
- 1:33:14Speaker 4: a young up and coming team in this league and
- 1:33:18Speaker 4: have it not look like a dumpster fire right right.
- 1:33:21Speaker 4: And I'm I'm talking on and off the field like
- 1:33:26Speaker 4: we and we got an email too, So I guess
- 1:33:27Speaker 4: I'll tie this in. I just ask, like, what you
- 1:33:31Speaker 4: and I would say is success the rest of the way,
- 1:33:36Speaker 4: and to me, is success the rest of the way
- 1:33:38Speaker 4: is not necessarily anything tangible, Like it's not like I'm saying,
- 1:33:42Speaker 4: be a top ten offense for the rest of the
- 1:33:44Speaker 4: year or something like that. It's more of a feel
- 1:33:47Speaker 4: thing of like, are they is the program pointed in.
- 1:33:51Speaker 2: The right direction? Are you seeing progress? Are you seeing progress?
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: Are you seeing good things on the field? But also
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: you know, we've had a lot of conversations lately about
- 1:34:02Speaker 2: the receiver room and what's coming out of that room
- 1:34:04Speaker 2: right now, and guys talking and guys having issues and
- 1:34:08Speaker 2: things like that, Like if that stuff gets buttoned up,
- 1:34:10Speaker 2: if that stuff get cleaned up and there's less rumors
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: about what's going on in a position group, or there's
- 1:34:16Speaker 2: less you know, issues off the field and issues with
- 1:34:20Speaker 2: you know, attitude and you know that kind of stuff,
- 1:34:23Speaker 2: those types of things that those things improve and those
- 1:34:26Speaker 2: become buttoned up and they're playing more competitively on Sundays
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: and not getting blown out by twenty points every single week.
- 1:34:33Speaker 2: It doesn't have to be wins and losses, but the
- 1:34:36Speaker 2: arrow has to be pointed in the right direction. Yeah, yeah, absolutely,
- 1:34:40Speaker 2: I agree with you. I think it's all about growth
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: and progress, right, and it's not necessarily gonna be linear,
- 1:34:44Speaker 2: but you can't go negative either. Basically, to me, a
- 1:34:47Speaker 2: successful season is they look like a better football team
- 1:34:50Speaker 2: week eighteen than they did week.
- 1:34:51Speaker 4: One, exactly, and right now they look like they're getting worse.
- 1:34:54Speaker 2: Right, But it might go you know, okay, so you
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: know you're better, and I'm trying to remember specific games.
- 1:35:00Speaker 2: I can't so excuse me if I'm wrong with the numbers, Like,
- 1:35:02Speaker 2: all right, you were better week six than you were
- 1:35:05Speaker 2: week seven. You took a little bit of a step
- 1:35:06Speaker 2: back going in a week seven. Then you were better
- 1:35:07Speaker 2: in week eight than you were worse than nine and ten,
- 1:35:09Speaker 2: and you were better in eleven. Like do you end
- 1:35:12Speaker 2: up up at the end of the year? Are you
- 1:35:14Speaker 2: building something? Do we see progress? That's basically what it
- 1:35:16Speaker 2: comes down to for me. Yeah. I mean, look when
- 1:35:18Speaker 2: we were talking about when.
- 1:35:19Speaker 3: I just said they were better in week.
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: Six, that was a pretty bad game for them, wasn't it.
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: I'm using imaginary numbers there. Don't apply that to specific games, Okay,
- 1:35:28Speaker 2: I got what you're saying.
- 1:35:29Speaker 4: Yeah, the last Like, let's take the last month of
- 1:35:33Speaker 4: the season. Right, in the last month of the season,
- 1:35:36Speaker 4: can you can you go two and two?
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: Right? You can?
- 1:35:39Speaker 4: You can you win a game maybe you're not supposed
- 1:35:40Speaker 4: to win down the stretch and Drake may throw's for
- 1:35:43Speaker 4: three point fifty against Buffalo and upsets Josh Allen, Like,
- 1:35:46Speaker 4: can we if you have those types of games down
- 1:35:48Speaker 4: the stretch, then we're all gonna go into the off
- 1:35:50Speaker 4: season feeling pretty good.
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: Any know else is gonna go to the offseason feeling
- 1:35:53Speaker 2: pretty good about Patriots players around the league, Right, we're
- 1:35:56Speaker 2: gonna want new contracts or one out for trades or
- 1:35:58Speaker 2: things like that.
- 1:35:59Speaker 4: And that's important, all right, really quickly, Whether you're preparing

- 1:37:00Speaker 3: Eldred's up.
- 1:37:00Speaker 4: Eldred, all right, call us back, Eldred and we'll get
- 1:37:04Speaker 4: you on the air. Justina is in North Carolina. It's up, Justina.
- 1:37:12Speaker 4: What's going on?
- 1:37:15Speaker 6: My thing is what I what My an analysis is
- 1:37:19Speaker 6: that the pain are not don't have competence in Mayo
- 1:37:26Speaker 6: because they let them play. They let Jacobe played for
- 1:37:32Speaker 6: so long, and you know that Mayo had one was
- 1:37:37Speaker 6: pulling for Drake to play at the beginning. But when
- 1:37:42Speaker 6: they let when they let Jakobe play and lose so many,
- 1:37:47Speaker 6: they should have put I think they.
- 1:37:49Speaker 7: Should have put may in for sooner. If they had
- 1:37:54Speaker 7: put him in sooner, then he probably would have He
- 1:37:59Speaker 7: probably would They probably would have more respect as far
- 1:38:02Speaker 7: as him being the CEO, as far as Mayo being
- 1:38:06Speaker 7: the CEO. But they're like you, you knew that Drake
- 1:38:10Speaker 7: was Drake was better, You even said it, and you're
- 1:38:12Speaker 7: letting us lose these games. You're not managing the He
- 1:38:16Speaker 7: should have said something sooner, or he should have maybe put.
- 1:38:19Speaker 5: May in like a that one.
- 1:38:21Speaker 7: Half or something. I mean, I'm not all against the
- 1:38:25Speaker 7: fact that they did play. They did play Jakobe because
- 1:38:30Speaker 7: now you can see the difference. You can see, you know,
- 1:38:33Speaker 7: the the respect there, and I don't think I don't
- 1:38:41Speaker 7: you can see that that made it a better coach.
- 1:38:43Speaker 7: So I think I think he was. He's given more
- 1:38:47Speaker 7: power to the offensive coach. And I'm not saying that
- 1:38:53Speaker 7: ADP was totally on point. As far as I'm giving
- 1:38:58Speaker 7: I'm giving May some credit for his play because the
- 1:39:01Speaker 7: same coach was coaching Jacoby, but you didn't see that
- 1:39:05Speaker 7: the same outcome in Jacoby. So I give give May
- 1:39:10Speaker 7: some credit to for what for how successful he is.
- 1:39:13Speaker 7: And I just think that the May May as first
- 1:39:17Speaker 7: year coach, is saying that he wanted to be a
- 1:39:19Speaker 7: cl but he's not a CEO. Like you said, he
- 1:39:22Speaker 7: needs to take over the defense, and he should have
- 1:39:24Speaker 7: stepped in and had had made play sooner, and I
- 1:39:28Speaker 7: think the team would be more and trust what he's
- 1:39:33Speaker 7: doing more. But definite take.
- 1:39:36Speaker 2: Thanks Justin, and thanks for the call. It's a good take.
- 1:39:38Speaker 2: I I agree with a lot of what she said,
- 1:39:40Speaker 2: as you know you do.
- 1:39:43Speaker 4: I think that the biggest thing that that she said
- 1:39:45Speaker 4: that I disagree with in a lot of ways, and
- 1:39:49Speaker 4: this goes back to our whole conversation off the top
- 1:39:51Speaker 4: of the show, not that conversation a couple of weeks ago.
- 1:39:54Speaker 4: It goes it goes back to I see you a
- 1:39:58Speaker 4: couple of weeks, a couple of weeks ago, a couple
- 1:40:01Speaker 4: of hours ago. Now, at the beginning of the show,
- 1:40:03Speaker 4: we were talking about like culture building versus a strategist
- 1:40:06Speaker 4: and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:40:08Speaker 2: I would put.
- 1:40:09Speaker 4: Mayo, not may Mayo saying that Drake may outplayed Jacobe
- 1:40:14Speaker 4: Brissett into that category of culture builder. Cannot say that, right, Like,
- 1:40:20Speaker 4: culture builder can't say that because that sets the team
- 1:40:25Speaker 4: up and drawed Mayo up for well, if this guy
- 1:40:28Speaker 4: is better than that guy, why is that guy playing?
- 1:40:31Speaker 5: Right?
- 1:40:31Speaker 4: So, like, these are the things in the media that
- 1:40:33Speaker 4: I I don't necessarily care a ton about. But if
- 1:40:38Speaker 4: you're trying to be culture guy, you're trying to be
- 1:40:41Speaker 4: personality higher uh ceo head coach, then you need to
- 1:40:47Speaker 4: avoid throwing players in people under the bus that are
- 1:40:51Speaker 4: underneath you, because you need those guys to be bought in,
- 1:40:54Speaker 4: like right now, again just my opinion, my opinion. Do
- 1:40:59Speaker 4: you think Jacoby bris said is thrilled with the situation
- 1:41:02Speaker 4: and how things go down? Jacoby pre SAT's going out
- 1:41:05Speaker 4: there on Sundays and he's still wearing a seat on
- 1:41:07Speaker 4: his jersey.
- 1:41:08Speaker 2: He's a captain of this team. So these are the
- 1:41:11Speaker 2: things that if you're trying to be Campbell, Tomlin, Carol,
- 1:41:16Speaker 2: like one of those types of guys, like these are
- 1:41:18Speaker 2: the things that can come back to bite you when
- 1:41:20Speaker 2: you say it in the media. Yea, is it? That's it?
- 1:41:26Speaker 2: You don't have a take. I agree with you, like
- 1:41:28Speaker 2: like you know, well, I've just agree with the picture.
- 1:41:31Speaker 2: Like I obviously was fine with them sitting him. I
- 1:41:33Speaker 2: think they could they have played it one week earlier.
- 1:41:35Speaker 3: I've said this.
- 1:41:36Speaker 2: I just based off some reports to me wrapport around
- 1:41:39Speaker 2: that time. I do think they wanted to play him
- 1:41:41Speaker 2: in the Dolphins game and David Andrews injury push that
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: back a week definitely possible. But yeah, I think girod
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: Mayo's kind of said as much since. But besides that, like, yeah,
- 1:41:53Speaker 2: there definitely is a different tone which drake me at quarterback.
- 1:41:57Speaker 4: All right, let's get some of these emails too. I
- 1:41:59Speaker 4: know we'll get to the call. I want to get
- 1:42:02Speaker 4: to this email though. Danny from Chicago, subject line AVP
- 1:42:07Speaker 4: one and done. Question Mark says he loves the show
- 1:42:10Speaker 4: is just wondering our outlook on Alex van Pelt this season.
- 1:42:15Speaker 4: Is he a one and done candidate, and some names
- 1:42:18Speaker 4: that maybe could replace him. I don't want to get
- 1:42:20Speaker 4: to the names quite yet because I go back to
- 1:42:23Speaker 4: what I was saying earlier in the show and we
- 1:42:25Speaker 4: were breaking down Drake May. I actually feel like they've
- 1:42:29Speaker 4: done a nice job with and like I said then,
- 1:42:32Speaker 4: like I feel like he's prepared. I feel like he's
- 1:42:34Speaker 4: ready to play, and justin brings up a good point
- 1:42:37Speaker 4: like that, he deserves credit for that too. You know
- 1:42:39Speaker 4: that he's he's got his hand in that as well.
- 1:42:41Speaker 4: But I have said this before and I feel the
- 1:42:45Speaker 4: same way. There's a chance, and I'm going to cross
- 1:42:49Speaker 4: sports here for a second, there's a chance that Alex
- 1:42:53Speaker 4: van Pelt is Mark Jackson and they need Steve Kerr
- 1:42:56Speaker 4: down the line, right, And if by saying that, if
- 1:43:00Speaker 4: Alex van Pelt does a really nice job of developing
- 1:43:03Speaker 4: Drake May, then I wouldn't necessarily want to pull the
- 1:43:07Speaker 4: rug out from underneath that just because we don't love
- 1:43:09Speaker 4: the scheme right that he's running, or we don't love
- 1:43:13Speaker 4: that he's not this like super innovative. You know, tight
- 1:43:15Speaker 4: pant offensive coordinator like we like to joke about. But
- 1:43:20Speaker 4: I wouldn't necessarily pull him from that if Drake May's
- 1:43:24Speaker 4: development is continuing to go on an upward trajectory. Now
- 1:43:28Speaker 4: in two to three years, if Drake May is a
- 1:43:31Speaker 4: finished product and Van Pelt's done his job, and then
- 1:43:35Speaker 4: girod Mayo, whoever the head coaches, decides, hey, you know
- 1:43:38Speaker 4: we need somebody that's a little bit more innovative, a
- 1:43:40Speaker 4: little bit more schematically savvy than Alex van Pelt, then
- 1:43:44Speaker 4: then go for it. But I wouldn't necessarily pull the
- 1:43:47Speaker 4: plug now because I think you are seeing mechanical improvements,
- 1:43:52Speaker 4: footwork improvements. He looks like he knows what he's looking
- 1:43:55Speaker 4: at and reading the field well. And I wouldn't want
- 1:43:58Speaker 4: to do that just because we're gonna hire a Cliff
- 1:44:02Speaker 4: Kingsbury type that draws up better plays well.
- 1:44:04Speaker 2: Alex Van Pelts a heck of a quarterbacks coach. Yeah,
- 1:44:06Speaker 2: you know, we can debate him as a as an
- 1:44:07Speaker 2: offensive coordinator. He's a heck of quarterbacks coach. And yeah,
- 1:44:10Speaker 2: I don't know that I want to pull the rug
- 1:44:11Speaker 2: on that just yet. The one thing I do wonder is,
- 1:44:15Speaker 2: look the record's not gonna be great. It might not
- 1:44:18Speaker 2: be an improvement from last year. I don't think Girod
- 1:44:23Speaker 2: Mayo is getting one and done. I don't think Elliot
- 1:44:25Speaker 2: Wolf's getting one and done. Yeah, for a number of
- 1:44:28Speaker 2: different reasons. I just should it happen. We can debate that,
- 1:44:31Speaker 2: Crystal Ball. I don't think it will happen, regardless of
- 1:44:34Speaker 2: what should or shouldn't go. So is there gonna be
- 1:44:37Speaker 2: a fall guy? Does that end up being Alex Vampell. Yeah,
- 1:44:40Speaker 2: I'd worry about that.
- 1:44:41Speaker 3: And to your point, like if it's clicking with him
- 1:44:44Speaker 3: and Drake.
- 1:44:44Speaker 2: May I, I'd be hesitant about that because it's all
- 1:44:48Speaker 2: about right now, what's best for the kid. And I
- 1:44:50Speaker 2: talked about this at the beginning of the show. You
- 1:44:51Speaker 2: now have to walk this tightrope of reorganizing things around
- 1:44:56Speaker 2: him to fix what's broken right now without messing up
- 1:44:59Speaker 2: the environment you've created for him to succeed.
- 1:45:02Speaker 3: Some of that. There's not a ton of overlap.
- 1:45:04Speaker 2: You don't have to worry about it, right, you know,
- 1:45:05Speaker 2: reconfiguring wide receiver room, he's got to get in new
- 1:45:07Speaker 2: chemistry with new wide receivers. Most quarterbacks have to do
- 1:45:10Speaker 2: that year in and year out. Anyway, I'm not super
- 1:45:12Speaker 2: worried about that once you start doing the whole two
- 1:45:14Speaker 2: offensive coordinators in two years thing, and then does that
- 1:45:17Speaker 2: become three and three? Because if you hire a good
- 1:45:19Speaker 2: offense coordinator, I am curious who's on that list, Evan,
- 1:45:22Speaker 2: just because like, let's say you do hire one of
- 1:45:24Speaker 2: these wonderkin guys and then he goes, what's the quarterbacks
- 1:45:28Speaker 2: coach in Houston?
- 1:45:28Speaker 3: Who I really like?
- 1:45:30Speaker 2: I know you're clearly not enough because I don't remember
- 1:45:32Speaker 2: his name is yet jaw Johnson? Yeah, yeah, Like I like.
- 1:45:37Speaker 3: Well, yeah, I liked it.
- 1:45:38Speaker 2: But like, if you go and you hire him, there's
- 1:45:41Speaker 2: a decent chance he's a head coach in twenty twenty six, right,
- 1:45:44Speaker 2: And now now you have three offensive coordinators in three years.
- 1:45:46Speaker 3: And we all know how that thing goes.
- 1:45:48Speaker 2: So I if it's working for Drake May, even if
- 1:45:53Speaker 2: the offense, like you said, maybe isn't the most innovative,
- 1:45:56Speaker 2: the most eye popping, if it's working for Drake May,
- 1:45:59Speaker 2: let it sit for a little bit. It doesn't mean
- 1:46:00Speaker 2: the tour tied together forever. And look, the reality is,
- 1:46:04Speaker 2: if Drake May is good at some point, Alex Van
- 1:46:06Speaker 2: Pelt's gonna get hired a way to be an offensive coordinator,
- 1:46:08Speaker 2: so like that's not locked in forever, but you gotta
- 1:46:12Speaker 2: be careful about the moves that impact may directly, and
- 1:46:15Speaker 2: that would be one of them. So not rolling out
- 1:46:17Speaker 2: him being one and done. I just think there's more
- 1:46:19Speaker 2: that comes with that than just we can get a
- 1:46:22Speaker 2: guy that wears kakis. To your point, you to use
- 1:46:25Speaker 2: your phrase, yeah, I and I wonder too, and maybe
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: this is it won't be possible because these guys are
- 1:46:31Speaker 2: so hot, highly coveted around the league, But like, is
- 1:46:35Speaker 2: there even a possibility that they could bring one of
- 1:46:37Speaker 2: those guys on staff and have somebody help with play
- 1:46:42Speaker 2: design and innovation and stuff like that the time being,
- 1:46:45Speaker 2: And because I think you put it greatly, like Van
- 1:46:48Speaker 2: Pelt is a good quarterbacks coach, and right how you
- 1:46:51Speaker 2: have a twenty two year old rookie quarterback who needs
- 1:46:54Speaker 2: some developing and needs some seasoning, and I just I
- 1:46:57Speaker 2: think he's doing his job. I really do think he's
- 1:46:59Speaker 2: doing his job, so though it hasn't been great and
- 1:47:01Speaker 2: schematically you talk about bringing in like essentially like an
- 1:47:04Speaker 2: offense consultant, which some people might say is what McAdoo
- 1:47:06Speaker 2: is but yeah, I mean, you know who I look
- 1:47:09Speaker 2: at in that regard, Brian Dable, that would be one.
- 1:47:12Speaker 2: I think if Dave Ball gets canned, he's either gonna
- 1:47:13Speaker 2: be a head coach or he's gonna be the highest
- 1:47:15Speaker 2: paid offense coordinator in Buffalo or just the head coach
- 1:47:18Speaker 2: of Bills.
- 1:47:19Speaker 3: Different AFC East coach different McDaniel.
- 1:47:22Speaker 2: Yeah, like some of it. And you know how I
- 1:47:25Speaker 2: feel about Mike McNeil's head coach, Like, do not think
- 1:47:28Speaker 2: that that works. That's part of the he's attracted to
- 1:47:31Speaker 2: me as an offensive coordinator because I if he gets
- 1:47:34Speaker 2: hired away, it's the Josh McDaniels factor, right, That's that's
- 1:47:37Speaker 2: what part. And honestly, like I'd put Josh McDaniels on
- 1:47:39Speaker 2: the list, like if you're gonna replace me, I'm not
- 1:47:42Speaker 2: gonna move on from Van Pelt blindly and just say
- 1:47:45Speaker 2: this guy isn't the answer because he's giving you some
- 1:47:48Speaker 2: good things. If you're gonna move on from Alex van Pelt,
- 1:47:51Speaker 2: there needs to be a clear improvement in place, and
- 1:47:54Speaker 2: ideally a guy that's gonna have at least a couple
- 1:47:57Speaker 2: of years before he gets head coach. Attention McDaniel. If
- 1:48:01Speaker 2: it ends ugly in Miami. I'm not worried about him
- 1:48:03Speaker 2: getting hired elsewhere for a year or two. Yeah, if
- 1:48:06Speaker 2: Josh McDaniels is like in the picture, we're not worried
- 1:48:09Speaker 2: about Josh McDaniels being an NFL head coach at this point.
- 1:48:12Speaker 2: You know you kind of have him for the long term.
- 1:48:15Speaker 2: Guys like that, right, if you can make that higher,
- 1:48:19Speaker 2: then maybe you talk about it. I'm not moving on
- 1:48:21Speaker 2: from Alex van Pelt for the next upshot wonder kid
- 1:48:24Speaker 2: who's gonna leave in a year to be a head coach.
- 1:48:26Speaker 2: That to me, you're probably gonna cause long term more
- 1:48:30Speaker 2: harm than good because now you're talking about what are
- 1:48:33Speaker 2: they at now six and six years?
- 1:48:35Speaker 3: Is McDaniels in twenty one?
- 1:48:37Speaker 2: Patricia twenty two, Bill O'Brien twenty three yards, they're four
- 1:48:41Speaker 2: and four? You move on now you're at five and five.
- 1:48:44Speaker 2: If you hire one of these guys who has head
- 1:48:46Speaker 2: coaching upside, now you're on six and six, like you
- 1:48:49Speaker 2: just it's three and three with Drake May, that's not
- 1:48:52Speaker 2: a good situation. Yeah.
- 1:48:53Speaker 4: McDaniel's an interesting name too, because it's a similar system.
- 1:48:56Speaker 4: I think that's what's big and people have to recognize
- 1:48:59Speaker 4: that as well. You know Josh McDaniels, Well, we all
- 1:49:03Speaker 4: love on this program, like I love Josh McDaniels as
- 1:49:06Speaker 4: an offensive mine, but Josh McDaniels runs an Earnhard Perkins
- 1:49:11Speaker 4: offense with a totally different run system and a totally
- 1:49:14Speaker 4: different playbook than what Alex Van Pelton West Coast scheme
- 1:49:18Speaker 4: runs now at the Patriots. So you're not gonna hire
- 1:49:21Speaker 4: Josh McDaniels to consult on an offense that he knows
- 1:49:23Speaker 4: nothing about, right, And I understand offense is offense, but
- 1:49:26Speaker 4: you're basically hiring a Spanish teacher to teach Italian, right,
- 1:49:31Speaker 4: Like that just wouldn't make much sense. Now, McDaniel it
- 1:49:34Speaker 4: speaks Italian and can coach Italian and Alex van Pelton
- 1:49:38Speaker 4: him speak Italian together. Now, maybe Alex van pelt is
- 1:49:42Speaker 4: from southern Italy and McDaniel's from northern Italy, but we're
- 1:49:45Speaker 4: still all speaking Italian, right, right, So those things can
- 1:49:48Speaker 4: work a little bit. But in terms of like McDaniels
- 1:49:52Speaker 4: or anybody from like the old Belichick tree, like that's
- 1:49:54Speaker 4: gonna be a completely different terminology and a completely different system.
- 1:49:58Speaker 4: So McDaniel is an interesting one. I don't think he's
- 1:50:01Speaker 4: getting fired, but that's an interesting one.
- 1:50:03Speaker 2: But I don't think he's either.
- 1:50:04Speaker 3: But that's kind of been my thing, like if he
- 1:50:07Speaker 3: does get let go, all.
- 1:50:09Speaker 4: Right, let's take this last call and then I want
- 1:50:11Speaker 4: to do like ten five to ten minutes on the
- 1:50:13Speaker 4: Jets and then we're gonna wrap it up. Jose is
- 1:50:15Speaker 4: in Texas. What's up, Jose? How are we doing?
- 1:50:23Speaker 5: Pretty good?
- 1:50:23Speaker 10: Pretty good? So I had a question about the Jets.
- 1:50:27Speaker 10: Do you think it's gonna be a high scoring game
- 1:50:30Speaker 10: or I think that the defense is finally gonna step
- 1:50:33Speaker 10: up for the Patriots. I kind of don't see the
- 1:50:36Speaker 10: defense not giving up less than one hundred and fifty
- 1:50:39Speaker 10: yards on the ground.
- 1:50:43Speaker 4: Yeah, thanks for the call, Jose, and thanks for the
- 1:50:45Speaker 4: segue because I wanted to talk about that. Anyways, So
- 1:50:48Speaker 4: the Jets on Sunday. When I look at this Jets
- 1:50:52Speaker 4: team right now, my bigger concern, certainly for the Patriots
- 1:50:56Speaker 4: is Aaron Rodgers in this Jets offense. I know it
- 1:50:59Speaker 4: hasn't necessarily statistically beared out, like they don't have great
- 1:51:03Speaker 4: numbers offensively, and Rodgers has been a little bit up
- 1:51:07Speaker 4: and down and all that kind of stuff. But I
- 1:51:10Speaker 4: just look at this Jets offense. Their best game of
- 1:51:12Speaker 4: the year was obviously Week three against the Patriots. They
- 1:51:15Speaker 4: have a lot of weapons, they can beat you in
- 1:51:18Speaker 4: multiple ways. They now have DeVante Adams in the mix.
- 1:51:21Speaker 4: It just feels like there's a lot of fires to
- 1:51:24Speaker 4: put out for the Patriots defense this week.
- 1:51:26Speaker 2: And I have a lot of concerns about this matchup.
- 1:51:29Speaker 2: I'm more worried about the run game honestly than Rodgers. Yeah,
- 1:51:31Speaker 2: like he's still getting on the same pageot guys and
- 1:51:33Speaker 2: things like that. But Brayln Allen Breest Hall, like, these
- 1:51:39Speaker 2: are hard, physical runners up against a team that can't tackle.
- 1:51:42Speaker 2: They've been opening holes like if the Patriots. So they
- 1:51:46Speaker 2: go lot one hundred and seventy one yards on the
- 1:51:47Speaker 2: ground against Jaguars, who've been a good run team this year.
- 1:51:50Speaker 2: They play that kind of defense against the Jets, they're
- 1:51:52Speaker 2: gonna go over two hundred. Look, Aaron Rodgers has banged up.
- 1:51:55Speaker 2: DeVante Adams is still getting brought into the mix. I
- 1:51:59Speaker 2: know he has the previous chemistry with Rogers, but he's
- 1:52:00Speaker 2: still getting brought in the mix.
- 1:52:02Speaker 3: Alvin Lazard is hurt. He didn't practice yesterday.
- 1:52:05Speaker 2: I think the Jets are gonna come out and want
- 1:52:07Speaker 2: to run the ball like I don't think they're gonna
- 1:52:08Speaker 2: kind of like remember the Patriots used to do this
- 1:52:10Speaker 2: to the Jets. It was like, let's just get through
- 1:52:12Speaker 2: this game. Like we're not gonna totally unleash Tom Brady.
- 1:52:14Speaker 2: We're not, right, Yeah, I think the Jets couldn't come
- 1:52:17Speaker 2: out and run the ball thirty five times.
- 1:52:18Speaker 3: And in that sense, I.
- 1:52:20Speaker 2: Actually think it's gonna be a low scoring game because
- 1:52:21Speaker 2: I think the clock's gonna be running a lot. But
- 1:52:25Speaker 2: I I if I'm the Patriots, I would almost rather
- 1:52:29Speaker 2: the ball be in Rogers' hands that And I know
- 1:52:31Speaker 2: that sounds crazy. It does a little bit, and especially
- 1:52:34Speaker 2: after what he did to them on on Thursday night
- 1:52:36Speaker 2: to start season, But I just think the Jets can
- 1:52:39Speaker 2: run up and down the field.
- 1:52:40Speaker 3: The way this Patriots defense is playing right now.
- 1:52:42Speaker 2: Well, that's my concern, I guess.
- 1:52:43Speaker 4: And when I say that there's a lot of fires
- 1:52:45Speaker 4: to put out is that, you know, I don't know
- 1:52:47Speaker 4: how the Patriots come into this game and like take something,
- 1:52:51Speaker 4: you have to take something off.
- 1:52:52Speaker 3: So let me credit. I don't feel great with the
- 1:52:54Speaker 3: ball being in Rogers hands, but it's like you have
- 1:52:58Speaker 3: to pick one, right.
- 1:52:59Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, And that gets back to like what we
- 1:53:02Speaker 4: were talking in the first hour about this defense, Like,
- 1:53:04Speaker 4: right now, you have to take something away as a defense.
- 1:53:08Speaker 4: Either you're not gonna run on us or you're not
- 1:53:09Speaker 4: gonna throw on us. And if you beat us by
- 1:53:12Speaker 4: running for two hundred yards, then good for you, right
- 1:53:14Speaker 4: and vice versa. And right now, the Patriots defense isn't
- 1:53:17Speaker 4: isn't doing any of it right. They're not stopping to
- 1:53:19Speaker 4: run or the past like effectively.
- 1:53:21Speaker 2: So I'll look at this Jets offense and it's kind
- 1:53:23Speaker 2: of like, well, they can just sort of do whatever
- 1:53:25Speaker 2: they want, right, Like, if if it's the run game,
- 1:53:28Speaker 2: it's the run game. If it's the pass game, it's
- 1:53:30Speaker 2: the past game. You know.
- 1:53:31Speaker 4: Back in Week three, the Patriots played a lot of
- 1:53:35Speaker 4: those two high safety shells. They really geared up for
- 1:53:38Speaker 4: the passing game with Rogers, and they ran it right
- 1:53:41Speaker 4: down their throats at the beginning of that game and
- 1:53:43Speaker 4: kind of opened things up. They ran a lot of
- 1:53:45Speaker 4: that zone lead you know, full back in the backfield
- 1:53:48Speaker 4: outside zone, but with the full back leading the way
- 1:53:52Speaker 4: into that two back they are sort of the first
- 1:53:54Speaker 4: team to put heavy personnel on the field against the
- 1:53:57Speaker 4: Patriots defense and make the Patriots play base, and then
- 1:54:00Speaker 4: they threw against base like that strategy kind of came
- 1:54:03Speaker 4: from the Jets. So I just look at this Jets offense.
- 1:54:06Speaker 4: I think Rogers has been shaky. Frankly, the Patriots is
- 1:54:10Speaker 4: the only game that I thought that he played well
- 1:54:11Speaker 4: in all year, He's been shaky. But the one thing
- 1:54:15Speaker 4: that he's still really really good at is if you
- 1:54:18Speaker 4: give him single coverage on the outside, he can still
- 1:54:22Speaker 4: drop it in the bucket and he's gonna get the
- 1:54:24Speaker 4: ball out quickly. You know, he's one of the fastest
- 1:54:27Speaker 4: release times in the NFL. He's getting out an under
- 1:54:29Speaker 4: two point four second, So he has no desire whatsoever
- 1:54:32Speaker 4: to hold the ball anymore. And you give him DeVante Adams,
- 1:54:36Speaker 4: Garrett Wilson one on one again, somebody on the perimeter,
- 1:54:38Speaker 4: that's where the ball is going. So that that would
- 1:54:41Speaker 4: be my concern in terms of, all, right, if we
- 1:54:44Speaker 4: load up, you know, seven eight guys in the box,
- 1:54:46Speaker 4: single high stop the run, make a put to Rogers,
- 1:54:50Speaker 4: the game in Rogers's hands. I have confidence that Christian
- 1:54:53Speaker 4: Gonzales can take a guy one on one and at
- 1:54:56Speaker 4: least hold his own right. You know, I love the Joneses.
- 1:54:59Speaker 4: I think both of them have been solid this year
- 1:55:01Speaker 4: for the Patriots. But Adams is a big dude, and
- 1:55:05Speaker 4: it was our plays.
- 1:55:06Speaker 2: He's a big dude, and this is what they struggled
- 1:55:08Speaker 2: with last time, the big receivers, so you know, fades,
- 1:55:11Speaker 2: back shoulders, slants where guys are just boxing people out.
- 1:55:15Speaker 2: You know, like think things like that does become concerns.
- 1:55:18Speaker 2: Tyler Conklin had like a huge game out of nowhere
- 1:55:21Speaker 2: against the Patriots in Week three, another big body target
- 1:55:24Speaker 2: at tight end for the Jets. I worry a lot
- 1:55:27Speaker 2: about this Jets offense. I think this Jets offense is
- 1:55:29Speaker 2: gonna has a lot of ways to beat the Patriots,
- 1:55:33Speaker 2: and that's gonna be concerning. But kind of like the
- 1:55:37Speaker 2: Week three game, I don't expect them to run it up, like,
- 1:55:40Speaker 2: I don't expect them to be high scoring, like I
- 1:55:44Speaker 2: think twenty four to twenty seven points for the Jets
- 1:55:47Speaker 2: is right where they're gonna be at. Offensively for the Patriots,
- 1:55:51Speaker 2: I expect them to be able to move the ball
- 1:55:52Speaker 2: a little bit better certainly than they did in Week three.
- 1:55:57Speaker 2: Mainly obviously because of Drake May, but also because I
- 1:56:00Speaker 2: would think that Van Pelt has a better plan. You know,
- 1:56:03Speaker 2: the Jets came out in that game. They blitzed the
- 1:56:06Speaker 2: heck out of Jacob Brissett. They're not really a blitz defense.
- 1:56:09Speaker 2: That's not really what they do, and they did it
- 1:56:12Speaker 2: in Week three and it definitely took the Patriots by surprise.
- 1:56:16Speaker 2: So hopefully they're better equipped and more prepared for that
- 1:56:19Speaker 2: this time around. The Jets have also had some injuries
- 1:56:22Speaker 2: in their secondary DJ Reid, Michael Carter been in and
- 1:56:25Speaker 2: out of practice and things like that. Then play last week,
- 1:56:28Speaker 2: so we'll see what happens there. But I do like
- 1:56:30Speaker 2: the Patriots are gonna score more against this Jets defense
- 1:56:33Speaker 2: this time around. I just don't know if they can stop.
- 1:56:34Speaker 3: Them, right.
- 1:56:35Speaker 2: I think it's gonna be you know, you're gonna hear
- 1:56:37Speaker 2: me come in next week, y'all about time of possession
- 1:56:39Speaker 2: and play disparity and things like that.
- 1:56:41Speaker 3: I think it's gonna be one of those games.
- 1:56:42Speaker 2: Well, we'll see.
- 1:56:44Speaker 4: I hope it's better than what we're per forecasting. I
- 1:56:48Speaker 4: think I picked twenty four to fourteen Jets on PU.
- 1:56:51Speaker 2: Yeah, it feels about right, yeah, i'd say like I
- 1:56:53Speaker 2: was gonna go like twenty seven to seventeen something like that.
- 1:56:55Speaker 4: Yeah, I just don't feel like this is one of
- 1:56:57Speaker 4: those games where they run away with it truly, Like
- 1:56:59Speaker 4: I don't think it's gonna be a forty five to
- 1:57:00Speaker 4: ten blowout or anything crazy like that, but just kind
- 1:57:04Speaker 4: of like that Week three game. I think there'll be
- 1:57:05Speaker 4: a clear winner in this game and you're gonna come
- 1:57:08Speaker 4: away with this. And just the last thing I wanted
- 1:57:10Speaker 4: to say about the Jets and then we'll wrap it
- 1:57:12Speaker 4: up in Week three. There's a lot of juice in
- 1:57:18Speaker 4: that building. It was their home opener, it was Aaron Rodgers'
- 1:57:21Speaker 4: first game back there since tearing his achilles the year before.
- 1:57:25Speaker 4: It was a short week, so energy was a big issue.
- 1:57:29Speaker 4: Whether it was the crowd giving the Jets energy, it
- 1:57:32Speaker 4: was the Patriots lacking energy on a short week. So
- 1:57:36Speaker 4: when we came out of that game, you know, on paper,
- 1:57:38Speaker 4: it looks like Jets are a much better team. They
- 1:57:41Speaker 4: just look like they have a much better roster. My
- 1:57:43Speaker 4: question for the Patriots in this game is can you
- 1:57:47Speaker 4: match the energy level? And let's actually see what the
- 1:57:50Speaker 4: talent gap is, right, Like, is it truly as wide
- 1:57:52Speaker 4: as it looked, and week three are a day closer
- 1:57:55Speaker 4: than maybe it seems because the Jets, let's face it,
- 1:57:57Speaker 4: they're two and five.
- 1:57:58Speaker 2: They're not.
- 1:57:59Speaker 4: It's not They're not this AFC powerhouse like a lot
- 1:58:02Speaker 4: of people thought they were. They just fired their head
- 1:58:03Speaker 4: coach like two weeks ago. So this Jets team is
- 1:58:07Speaker 4: also not done well this year and not playing up
- 1:58:10Speaker 4: to their standard or their roster talent. So they looked
- 1:58:14Speaker 4: like they were a varsity team against a JV team
- 1:58:18Speaker 4: on that Thursday night game. So I'm hoping that we
- 1:58:20Speaker 4: see a little bit of a different discreption.
- 1:58:24Speaker 2: Given the way the last week is gone and all
- 1:58:25Speaker 2: of that, like all the reason to come out fired up.
- 1:58:27Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely, all right, Well, foball season is definitely here.
