- 0:05SPEAKER_01: It all started with a prayer and a simple response to a need.
- 0:10SPEAKER_01: A need that couldn't be ignored.
- 0:12SPEAKER_01: Children finding their identity on a mountain of trash and seen by others as untouchable.
- 0:18SPEAKER_01: We all have a voice, yet not all of us are heard.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: So we brought their story and voice back home, and a team was built.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: That team had to rely on something greater, a greater call.
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: Jesus came to save the least, the lost, and the forgotten.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: This is the example we followed.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: But it would take more than a simple handout or temporary assistance because of the complexity of the problems in trash-dumped communities.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: It would take hope and empowerment.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: Empowerment by viewing the success of others as our own, by equipping them to do more than simply survive, providing nutrition and education to increase capacity, and jobs to give an opportunity to flourish.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: All of this centered on love and discipleship to build hope.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: Hope by investing in the whole person.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: Because we are all made in God's image.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: To love the least, the lost, and the forgotten.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: This is our command.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: This is our charge.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Good morning.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: How are you doing?
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Trash Mountain.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Anybody ever heard of that?
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Any of you ever been on a trip with TMP?
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Both of you?
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: Good.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: This is Brett Durbin.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: He's the founder of Trash Mountain.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I just realized I was wearing my spoken.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: I mean, I knew this was happening and I forgot in the other two services to script.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: So I'm wearing a spoken shirt.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: That's why we're up here.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: And uh, but anyway, Trash Mountain, in case you don't know, would you um would you just share a little bit about the background Trash Mountain?
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we uh, you know, we started uh about seven and a half years ago, and we moved back up here in 2011.
- 2:10SPEAKER_02: I actually was in Florida at the time when we had started this after being a pastor down there and and uh moved back Topeka.
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: I'm kinda homegrown here.
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: A lot of you know my family.
- 2:19SPEAKER_02: Uh they work in Teeth a lot around Topeka, and so um they've been here for a very long time, and so there was just some real natural connection uh with TBC.
- 2:29SPEAKER_02: But we uh we've been working in trash dump communities, which if you kind of got an idea from the video, we hope that was our at least gives you a visual of it.
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: But it's basically you have you know children and families that are are you know living their existence within landfills in developing countries, and so they're that's where they find their livelihood.
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: They're picking for something they can sell, find food, whatever you may uh run into.
- 2:51SPEAKER_02: But um we have um really developed over the last seven years.
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: Now we're working in uh five countries, nine communities, and um are learning all the time.
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: Uh it's a very complex issue in these areas.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: Because you realize early on you couldn't just say hand out tracks.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: I mean you needed to supply, I mean, these are kids in the trash.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: So you need to have a reason for their parents to allow them not to be in trash, you need to be feeding them, you need to be educating them, you need to uh all of these things, medical help, schools, church, and so forth, right?
- 3:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:23SPEAKER_02: And for us, we saw that as really the that was the outreach of the church.
- 3:27SPEAKER_02: You know, we we depend on our local church partners overseas.
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: You know, we work only through pastors and churches that are in these areas, or we put a church there if there isn't one.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: There usually isn't much of an influence there in that way.
- 3:38SPEAKER_02: And then also working with our church partners back here, um, that's why we're here talking in front of you.
- 3:44SPEAKER_02: We really feel that that is that is how, that's really the only mechanism Jesus put in place, you know, to address uh uh such things down to the spiritual level.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: So for us, all those things we do really are grounded in that discipleship process for them.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: I'm wearing a t-shirt that says spoken on it.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: And this is a two-year-old t-shirt.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Spoken was a fall event that you had, you know, we had a few of them.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: And um and sort of a fundraiser, it was a meal, it was a good time getting together in the fall.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: And we you took a year off last year, didn't you?
- 4:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: But yeah, we're doing it again this year.
- 4:19SPEAKER_02: Um we uh did something a little bit different last year just to kind of uh take a break after four years, but now we're gonna be doing it again uh October 16th.
- 4:27SPEAKER_02: Um really this is just this is a chance for us to be able to share um uh not only some of the things that have happened over this last you know couple of years, or to share the story of what God is doing in this ministry, which um we have some pretty cool things to share with you that have happened that uh aren't as much public knowledge yet, um, but just also where things are going, what is the vision right now?
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: And so um we've designed it a little bit differently than we've done in the past.
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: We do get fed.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: Um it's a dinner, you know, over at Capitol Plaza Sunflower Ballroom.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: They've been growing up from night five weeks from tonight.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: Um and so we have uh we've put it at six o'clock.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: Our goal is always to be one and a half hours.
- 5:04SPEAKER_02: Um we know that anything super long-winded is just hard to sit through, so we really try to do that and move things along quickly.
- 5:11SPEAKER_02: Um we've also broken it up.
- 5:13SPEAKER_02: There's no one element of the night that's any more than twelve or thirteen minutes long.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: Um and so we're having multiple speakers, um, some from here, some not from here.
- 5:21SPEAKER_02: And we're gonna be talking about what that strategy is, what we have been learning, and and how is this effective?
- 5:27SPEAKER_02: You know, how can we really reach these folks that really have been forgotten, that feel they're they're just a part of these these trash dumps.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: Uh I know at least one time in the past it sort of got filled up pretty early.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: So that's why you're selling we're selling tickets in both both Mulvain and College Avenue facilities, right, this morning?
- 5:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:46SPEAKER_02: We've we've sold out each year.
- 5:48SPEAKER_02: Um right now there are tickets, so if um they're available, they're available out here in the lobby.
- 5:53SPEAKER_02: Or if you're ever in the cab building, um, I have to mention again, he's gonna let the air out of my tires, but Tim Collins promised he would break dance in the lobby over there.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: And so I want to see that.
- 6:01SPEAKER_02: I want video.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: Someone get the phone out, please.
- 6:03SPEAKER_02: But he'll be out there directing you're over in the uh check-in area.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: Okay, so if you're in the uh auditorium, you know, in the College Avenue building, then you come out and you just walk straight down the hall and just keep walking through the lobby, and then you'll be in that room, and that's where they are.
- 6:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and we uh uh tickets are$25.
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: All that actually does go to the ministry.
- 6:22SPEAKER_02: It's an underwritten event.
- 6:23SPEAKER_02: So um this is something that if if you want to go, if that's an issue, please tell us.
- 6:27SPEAKER_02: I've actually said this each service, but then one of your members came up and told us at the end of the last service that anyone who can't afford a ticket, he'll pay for your ticket.
- 6:35SPEAKER_02: So we were just gonna give the ticket to you, but you have a member that's actually gonna pay.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: If someone cannot afford the ticket, please let us know.
- 6:41SPEAKER_02: If you feel it's something that God is leading you to find out more about, uh, we want to make sure that you can get there.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: So cool, Brett.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Trash Mountain, great ministry.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: God bless you.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: If you're visiting this morning, we're in a sermon series called Route 66.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: We're spending one Sunday morning, one week on each of the 66 books of the Bible.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: We only get to hear that bumper video 15 more times because this morning we've come to the 51st book.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: The name of that book is Colossians.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: It's four chapters, 95 verses long.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: I think the best way to title it this morning would be, All I Need is You.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: And what I want to say about this at the outset is that I this is, in my view, the single most important subject.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna talk to you this morning about the single most important subject on the heart of God.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: I'm going to at the same time talk to you about the single most important assignment that I think God has given every Christian.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: I'll talk to you about what I think is the single greatest challenge that I face personally every single day of my life.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: But to get into that, I want to come in a side door, and the side door into this uh most important subject is a side door labeled intimidation.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Any of you ever felt intimidated by people or by uh, you know, of course, all of us at times have felt intimidated.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: We've we've been around people who are dominant or outgoing or who think that we ought to buy what they have or experience what they've experienced or do what they've done, and for that reason we feel intimidated.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: Sometimes at work you'll be intimidated by your boss or by someone you work with.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: I finally got rid of a book, left it at the public library, uh called Winning Through Intimidation, a book dating from the mid-80s by Robert Ringer, and basically his message was this.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: He said, You know all those books about success that tell you that success is based upon having a positive mental attitude and working hard?
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: Baldurdash, he said.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: We don't live in a nursery playground.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: We live in a jungle.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: The business world is a jungle, and to get ahead, you gotta try to get all the chips on your side of the table.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: And the way to do that is through intimidation.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: He said, I suggest that you hire not one but two personal secretaries who trail you around wherever you go.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: And when you sit down in a boardroom, for example, they sit right behind you, they take down every word you say.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: In the elevator boardrooms, he said, that'll intimidate people.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: He said, That briefcase you've got, that thing's ragged.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: You need to get rid of that briefcase.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: You need to buy yourself the most amazing, ostentatious alligator skin, multi-hundred dollar briefcase, slide that puppy across the table when you're meeting with someone, they'll be intimidated.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: That's the way to get ahead in this world.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: And you say to me, How come it took you 25 years to get rid of that book?
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: Well, I finally did.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: But what I want to talk to you today about is about intimidation in the church or spiritual intimidation.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: For who of us hasn't had somebody at one time or another come up to us and say, you know, you need to have the experience that I've had, or you need to go to the conference that I've gone to, you need to read the book that I've read, or see the movie that I've seen.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: You'll never be where you need to be as a Christian unless you've taken the course I've taken, unless you cultivate the talent or gift that I've cultivated, unless you have the secret knowledge that I've got, or are exercising the same discipline.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: And Paul is writing to a group of people, he's never actually been to the small town of Colossae or to this church.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: It's in the region of Ephesus and so forth.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: But he's writing to this group of people who he finds out are being intimidated by false teachers.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: Scholars tell us they were Jewish and they were ascetics, that is, they were big into self-denial and mysteries.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: But but that's beside the point.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: We can see clearly in chapter 2 four kinds of intimidation that the Colossians were getting.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: And the first one was an intimidation related to philosophy and psychology.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: And Paul has to say, be careful that no one takes you captive through philosophy based on human tradition and not on Christ.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: Now, let's I want you to be real clear.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: I love philosophy and I like psychology, and my library of books on those topics is pretty big, partly because I taught philosophy for 10 years, and even my library intimidates me.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: And the thing is, I'm intimidated, you know, and some of us are by people who come up to us and say, you know, psychologically you will never become all you can be unless you really understand, let's say, the issues of self-esteem or self-confidence, or how the problems in your life are passed down to you by parents who mistreated you.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: And you'll never can never be what you need to be, or complete in Christ, or whatever, unless you understand that.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: I'm here to tell you that the best Christian psychologists and philosophers today will disagree with that.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: They will tell you, listen, I yeah, I want you to buy my books, but I will tell you that they're not absolutely essential for becoming mature and complete in Christ.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: The second kind of intimidation that's clearly that was clearly happening in Colossae was the rules and legalism intimidation.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: Don't let anyone condemn you, Paul writes, for what you eat or drink.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: This is 2, 16 and 17.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: Or for not celebrating certain holy days or new moon ceremonies or Sabbaths.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: For these rules were only shadows of the real thing, Christ Himself.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: Which of us hasn't been somewhat intimidated by someone who came up and said, you're eating the wrong food, or you're drinking the wrong drinks, or wearing the wrong clothes, or your haircut.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: When I was young, it was your haircuts wrong, or you shouldn't be wearing pedal pushers in church.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: Or, you know, there's always something, right?
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: Or someone who says you ought to be going to church on that day rather than that day, right?
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: And Paul says, no, that that's not true.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: Spirituality and what you eat have nothing in common.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: Now, I'll be the first to concede, I should eat less red meat, I should eat a little less fat.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: The fact that I've made myself bacon the last couple mornings, probably not the best thing, and that I love anyway, and and and too much salt and shouldn't be eating ice cream at 10 o'clock at night.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: I'm I'll confess that.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: I'm really comforted by Colossians, though, which reminds me that that has nothing to do with true spirituality.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: Now I learned that also, not only with what you eat, but what you drink.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: And this is a touchy subject because the fact of the matter is, is there are a lot of young Christians, young meaning in their 20s, who over-drink, who use their freedom in Christ excessively.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: And so there is over-drinking today.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: But you know, when I was uh uh when I had my children at home, uh, before there was a, you could fast forward through commercials and we were watching TV together, the way I handled beer commercials and other things is I would make fun of them and the kids would laugh and so forth.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: I didn't want them to take them too seriously and stare at them and think that, oh, this, yeah, you can become the perfect person or beautiful or whatever.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: So I used to make fun of them until the day that my middle son said to me, as a beer commercial was going on, he said, he can't be a Christian.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: And I remember thinking, oh my, you know, he's gotten the wrong idea.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: Somehow he's thought that somehow, because I'm making fun of beer and wine, that that, you know, just be, you know, I didn't trying to help them, that somehow there was a connection between that and become being a Christian or true spirituality.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: And and so, despite the fact that yes, we have a problem with alcohol uh today, let's remind ourselves that food, drink, certain holy days, rules, legalisms have nothing to do with becoming perfect in Christ.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: Number three, mystical spiritual experiences.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: Don't let anyone, Paul says, who delights in, and he lists mystical experiences.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: Don't let the worship of angels disqualify you.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: Such a person goes into great detail about what they have seen.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: They're puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: We know that the intimidators in Colossae were telling people that the best worship of all was, of course, done by the angels around the throne.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: And therefore, in a mystical way, you needed to get in touch with the angels, you need to get outside yourself, you need to speak with the tongues of angels, you need to do other things, and you needed in that way to really, really become all you could be in Christ.
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: And Paul says, no, you don't need any mystical or spiritual experience to become complete in Christ.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: And finally, he says, asceticism and self-denial.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: He says, um, in Colossians chapter 2, 20 to 23, you've died with Christ and He sets you free from the spiritual powers of this world.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: So why do you keep on following the rules of the world, such as don't handle, don't taste, don't touch?
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: Such rules are mere human teachings about things that deteriorate as we use them.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, pious self-denial, severe bodily discipline, but they provide no help in conquering a person's evil desires.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: So the rules of asceticism: don't eat that.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: In fact, you ought to be fasting, don't do that, uh, get rid of all of that stuff.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: Again, those things, yeah, can they be helpful?
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: Can it be wise to root nine-tenths of your wardrobe out and give it away?
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: Uh, can it be better if you're, you know, maybe to be driving a really cheap car that you have to repair every week?
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: Maybe, but but asceticism and self-denial, remember, have nothing to do, Paul says, with being truly spiritual.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: So that was the first part of my message.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: It was to say that we tend to be intimidated, even in the church, by people that tell us we need certain experiences, we need certain knowledge, we need that conference or that book.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: Paul's response to this in Colossians is fourfold.
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: In chapter one, he responds by saying, Hold it.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: You want God, Christ is all that there is of God that you'll ever know.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: So his first response is to say, Christ is all there is of God.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: By the way, the word Christ, you know, there are more, there are books that mention Christ more often, but none that mention him more often by the percentage of verses.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: 25 out of 95 verses mention Christ, include the name Christ, in this book.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: He is the image, Paul says in verse 15, chapter 1, of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: You want God, what you really want is Christ.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: He is the spitting image, we can say.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: My mother used to say, she's all southerners used to say that she was from Atlanta, Georgia, and she used to say, Oh, that little baby, that's a he's a spitting image of his father.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: And I always thought it had to do with saliva.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: And but of course, it didn't.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: It was a southern phrase that meant he, he, that little baby is the spirit and image.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: And you say it really quick, he's the spitting image of the invisible God.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: And that's what Jesus Christ is.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: He is the spirit and image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: I'm told that the FBI sent out a most wanted poster, you know, to uh all over the country, and a sheriff in Appalachia got it, you know, with the with the side views and the front view of this wanted criminal called up the FBI, you know, and said, I got that poster that you sent out.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: I just want you to know I've seen the photographs and I have captured all three men.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: FBI's response says, of course, hold it, hold it.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: If you've seen one, you've seen them all.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: That's just one guy.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: Now, Jesus, there are actually three persons in the Holy Trinity, but Jesus may be the only one we ever get to see.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: God the Father, God the Holy Spirit, both being spirit beings.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: And so when you've seen Christ, you've seen all there is of God.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: When we were witnessing in parks in New York City, the high schoolers and I, this summer, maybe the most common response we got from people was something that went kind of like this.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: I'm a Buddhist, you're a Christian, uh, someone else over there is Muslim, but we all worship the same God, right?
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: And then what you are tasked with is finding a nice way to say, wrong.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: Christianity is defined by its belief that a Jew who hailed from Nazareth in Galilee is the complete and only representation of God the Father.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: He is the only representation of God the Father.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: He is the image of the invisible God.
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: You want God, you have to have Christ.
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: So, in other words, you can do anything you want with Christ that you want.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: You can worship him as God's image, the Son of God, or else you can reject him as crazy, but you can't sort of pliably twist him like clay to make into someone who just goes thumbs up, no matter what you believe.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: And and Paul goes on in chapter one to explain Christ is actually the God creator of everything.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: For by him all things were created in heaven and on earth.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: You read Genesis 1:1, God created everything.
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: Keep in mind Jesus Christ was his emissary who did that.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: All things were created in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities, all things were created through him and for him, and he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: Christ is all of the creator God that there ever was or that you ever want to see.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: And then Christ is all of the head of the church, the supreme head of the church God you're ever gonna see.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: He is the head of the church, which is a body, he's the first of all who rise from the dead, see, he's first in everything.
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: Or so that in everything he might have the supremacy.
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: Many translations say.
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: Whisper that word supremacy for a second.
- 21:59SPEAKER_00: I can't hear you.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Supremacy?
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: Isn't that a cool word?
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: Christ is supreme.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: Supremacy.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: This means that Christ is higher than everyone else.
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: And I think you know this.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: Christ is the head of the church.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: It doesn't matter who, what famous person came into this room, whether it's the president, the Pope, Billy Graham, we would honor any of them by standing up.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: But if Christ came in this room as the head of the church and as the image of the invisible God, we would not stand.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: We would fall on our knees because we understand that He is supreme, that He is overall in a very special way, and we worship Him.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: So the point of chapter one, I think, is Paul saying, Christ is all there is of God.
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: So if you want God, then you want Christ.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: Resist the intimidators who say, listen, you want God, you've got to have this experience, this course, you've got to have this seminary degree.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: No, if you want God, you want Christ.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: And then he moves on to build on that by saying in chapter two, Christ is all you need, all you need to be all you can be.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: An amazing statement.
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: He says it in 127, plant your roots in Christ, and let him be the foundation for your life.
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: And then right after that, and what I think is the key verse of the book, he says, For in Christ the fullness of God lives in a human body, and you are complete through your union with Christ.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: He's the Lord over every ruler and authority in the universe.
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: Colossians 2, 9, 9, and 10.
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: The fullness of God lives in a human body in Christ.
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: And you are, and by the way, in Greek it's the same word, and you are full through your union with Christ.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: Isn't that interesting?
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: So he's saying Christ contains the fullness of God, and in him you are full through union with Christ.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: Now, how can you say that Christ is full of God?
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: And somehow, can we be that full of God?
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: And I think I think the answer is yes and no, but mainly no.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: And I think of it sort of like when I think about growing up as a boy that my father went through some years of being really health conscious, prevention magazine.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: He didn't want fluoride in the water and so forth.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: We lived an hour from the coast from Cannon Beach in Oregon.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: And so once a month for a while, uh he would tell us to ask us kids if we wanted to go to the beach.
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: Of course we said yes.
- 24:30SPEAKER_00: It was a Saturday, so we'd all jump in the red station wagon.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: And in the back of the station wagon, he put uh what we call milk bottles, these gallon, glass gallon milk bottles we used to fill with the milk from the cow that we would uh that he sold for a dollar.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: And but now we had clean milk bottles, these gallon jugs and jars, and we took them in boxes and we took them to the coast.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: And he let us out and he'd give the older ones of us each one gallon uh bottle and say, be careful.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: I don't want you to run down there, I want you to walk uh down to the surf, and I want you to fill this and bring it back.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: And so we would go down and we would stick that thing under the cold water of the Pacific Ocean, and we'd fill it up, put the lid back on, and we'd carefully carry it back, and he would take it home, we'd take that home, all of those gallon jars, and mom would cook with him.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: He'd go, You really had a weird childhood.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: Well, it only lasted a year or so that he really cared about this, and you know, and he was as cheap as I am, and so, you know, the spending that money and gas to get to the coast, it was better, you know.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: But anyway, um, so so so here's the picture.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: So the ocean, which seems to have no end in the amount of water, that's sort of my picture.
- 25:47SPEAKER_00: That's sort of like Jesus Christ, filled.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: The ocean, like the ocean's filled with all the water.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: Christ filled with all the fullness of God.
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: Then I come, I come myself as sort of a gallon jar, limited, and I come and I dip myself in, I allow Christ to fill me with himself.
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: And I get full, and what I'm full of is the fullness of God.
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: I obviously don't have all the fullness of God, but I am full of that same fullness of God that Jesus Christ has.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: And this is not just in Colossians 2, that in him all the fullness of the deity dwells, and I am complete or full in him.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: John says, for of his fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace.
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: So that so that I can tell you as your pastor this morning, I can tell you, in Christ, you have been made complete.
- 26:43SPEAKER_00: In Christ, you have been made full, you've been made complete.
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: And I would I would encourage you this week, as you're just sitting around or whatever, once in a while, maybe in your quiet time, to whisper this phrase to yourself.
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: I am complete in him.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: Especially when you feel intimidated or inferior or weak, okay?
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: I am complete.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: Whisper that with me.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: I am complete in him.
- 27:08SPEAKER_00: A little louder, I am complete in him.
- 27:11SPEAKER_00: And if you really believe it, say it even louder.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: I am complete in him, because that's the message of Colossians.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: It's an amazing message that Jesus Christ is all I need, and I am complete in him.
- 27:27SPEAKER_00: As 50 years ago, the Beatles were asked to perform on the first ever worldwide television broadcast.
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: And so they came up with a song which they felt would speak to the whole world.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: And the song they came up with was All You Need is Love.
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: Love.
- 27:48SPEAKER_00: Love is all you need.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: Great song.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: Still love that song.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: All you need is love, love, love is all you need.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: And Paul is saying something like that, except he's saying, All you need is Christ.
- 27:59SPEAKER_00: Christ.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: Christ is all you need.
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: And of course, the world, and some people in the church, unfortunately, don't act that way.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: Instead, we're always looking for more.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: We're looking for that mystery or that intelligence or that discipline or that inside track or that shortcut, which will get us, you know, all the way up to where we think we'd like to be spiritually.
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: And I'm not preaching at you here, I'm preaching at myself.
- 28:27SPEAKER_00: Many of you know me, and you know, uh, you know that I am an inveterate, an unceasing, and untiring learner.
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: I am absolutely curious.
- 28:36SPEAKER_00: Every week, it happened, of course, today, it happens probably every week.
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: Someone comes out, hands me a book, and says, you need to read this.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: And I and you'd think I'd be offended, but I'm not, because I read fast and I take it, and and some of those books have really, really been great.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: And so I took the book this morning as I always did.
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: I said, Thank you very much.
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: And and and so I I have this drive inside me to know more.
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: I'm at the library a whole lot, maybe more than any of you, always trying to read a new commentary on the Bible.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: So I'm I have this I have this problem.
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: I have this problem that that tends to tends to make me uh unsettled and dissatisfied with how I am, right?
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: So I'm always looking for more, and and I come to the Bible, I come to Colossians, I come to Paul, and he says, listen, Jim, fine for you to be uh a curious and an inveterate learner, but you need to realize that even if your eyes should go and you couldn't read anymore, even if your mind should go and you couldn't understand things anymore, you need to understand you would still have all you need because you have Christ, and Christ is all you need.
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: Can you say amen to that?
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: See, if that's true of me, I'll bet it's true of you.
- 29:55SPEAKER_00: So quit looking around the world thinking there's gotta be some secret out there which will shortcut me to spiritual perfection.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: In fact, I think Paul would say, my conclusion of this is the extent to which you need something else to fill you is the extent to which you find Christ deficient.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: The extent to which you need something else to fill you is the extent to which you find Christ deficient.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: So that's that's that's chapter one, Christ is all there is of God.
- 30:33SPEAKER_00: Chapter two, Christ is all you need to be, all you can be, okay?
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: So, as usual, in the last half of Paul's books, he then gives the application of what we need to do.
- 30:43SPEAKER_00: Chapter three and chapter four are think Christ and live Christ.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: When people ask me, by the way, uh they say, I would like a package, give me a passage scripture that I could read.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: There'd be a great passage this week, uh, you know, or give me a verse to memorize.
- 30:59SPEAKER_00: I always give them, did this just two weeks ago, I always give them chapter three of Colossians one through four, the heart of which goes like this seek what is above, say this with me, seek what is above where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
- 31:18SPEAKER_00: Set your minds on what is above, not on what on the earth.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: So Paul's saying, since you've been raised with Christ, seek what is above.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: And seek is sort of a general word, pursue.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: What does that mean?
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: It's vague.
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: So he clarifies that by saying, what I mean is think Christ.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: Set your minds on what is above, not on what is on the earth.
- 31:42SPEAKER_00: And by what is above, he's speaking really of the same thing that Paul was speaking about in Ephesians when he talked about the heavenly places, which we defined as not necessarily something straight up in the sky, a million miles, but it is that parallel yet invisible realm in which Christians can be in touch with God and angels and in conflict with the devil and his demons.
- 32:08SPEAKER_00: The heavenlies is this parallel but invisible world where you and I are in touch with God and his angels and in conflict with Satan and his demons.
- 32:19SPEAKER_00: And so this is the region where Paul says, you and I need to go.
- 32:24SPEAKER_00: We need to think Christ, set our minds where he is, and the realities of heaven, because we've died to this life.
- 32:31SPEAKER_00: In fact, he then gives us in 1 through 4, verses 1 through 4, the two reasons to do this.
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: First, he says, because your identity is there, for you, he says, have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
- 32:45SPEAKER_00: You are no longer the person you used to be.
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: You're a new person in Christ.
- 32:49SPEAKER_00: Your identity is that you are Christ.
- 32:52SPEAKER_00: Now your life's hidden there with Christ.
- 32:54SPEAKER_00: Secondly, your home is there and your eternal future.
- 32:57SPEAKER_00: When Christ, who's our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.
- 33:02SPEAKER_00: That's your home.
- 33:03SPEAKER_00: So therefore, you should be thinking Christ, putting your mind, setting your mind on Christ even now.
- 33:11SPEAKER_00: Okay, so I've tried to distill this into words that are just simple, straightforward, that I can use, that I think about, and here they are.
- 33:20SPEAKER_00: I think what I'm talking about is this.
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: I'm talking about consciously, continually living in the presence of Christ, chatting with him, enjoying him, loving him, laughing, crying, thanking, complaining, all of it in the presence of God.
- 33:44SPEAKER_00: I'm talking about, say it with me, consciously, continually living in the presence of Christ, chatting with him, enjoying him, loving him, laughing, crying, thanking, complaining, all of it in the presence of God.
- 34:05SPEAKER_00: And that is practicing the presence of God, that is living in the presence of God, going in and out and finding pasture, as it were, during the day.
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: I didn't put a picture up here of someone on a mountaintop, someone all alone at the beach.
- 34:21SPEAKER_00: I put a picture of a person in the busy hustle and bustle of daily life, in the midst of a crowd, driving on Wanamaker, down at the job, whatever, because this is where you and I need to practice the presence of God.
- 34:35SPEAKER_00: This is where we need to think Christ.
- 34:39SPEAKER_00: Now the words may be over a thousand years old, but they're perfect for what I'm talking about.
- 34:45SPEAKER_00: Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart.
- 34:50SPEAKER_00: Not be all else to me save that thou art, which means may nothing else mean anything to me except for you.
- 34:58SPEAKER_00: Thou my best thought, by day or by night, waking or sleeping, thy presence, my light.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: Christ is all there is of God, Christ is all you need, so you need to think Christ, and then what flows out of that is living Christ.
- 35:16SPEAKER_00: So now for the rest of the book, he says things like clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.
- 35:23SPEAKER_00: Why does he say that?
- 35:25SPEAKER_00: Because that's living the personality of Christ, being Christ-like.
- 35:29SPEAKER_00: He then says, bear with each other and forgive one another.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: If any of you has a grievance against someone, verse 13, chapter 3, forgive us the Lord forgave you.
- 35:39SPEAKER_00: Why does he say that?
- 35:40SPEAKER_00: Because that's who Jesus was, and that's what Jesus did.
- 35:44SPEAKER_00: Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all in perfect harmony, verse 14.
- 35:49SPEAKER_00: And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father, verse 70.
- 35:57SPEAKER_00: This is living Christ.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: And listen to me, I do not think he's giving two separate commands here, which is, okay, think Christ, and then in the next five minutes I want you to live Christ.
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: No, no, no.
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: It's one command in that you live Christ if you think Christ, because you become what you think about.
- 36:19SPEAKER_00: If you think about something, if you're in love with something, then you tend to think about them all the time and become like them.
- 36:30SPEAKER_00: One illustration of that is the illustration of a boy named Todd who grew up and went to Wheaton College and he roomed with a TBCer named Bob Keyes, Robert Keyes back in 1990, his junior year.
- 36:45SPEAKER_00: Todd was a great athlete.
- 36:47SPEAKER_00: He was, I think, a shortstop or second baseman on the Wheaton baseball team.
- 36:52SPEAKER_00: Quirky guy, kind of quiet.
- 36:54SPEAKER_00: He uh he he loved having fun.
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: He got all of his friends, including Robert, to learn the Randy Travis song, which they so that they could sing it over the phone to his girlfriend.
- 37:04SPEAKER_00: But what Robert remembers, and I'm quoting him here, is he says, Todd always loved America.
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: Todd always had an eight-foot flag, he said, which he made us, Todd, Todd and Robert lived in an apartment off campus there at Wheaton.
- 37:20SPEAKER_00: He made us put the eight-foot flag, American flag up behind the couch, and at times we had to stand and we had to sing the Star-Spangled Banner in front of the flag, and he had a terrible voice, apparently.
- 37:31SPEAKER_00: But but that's why you say he thought, he loved, he thought about America.
- 37:36SPEAKER_00: Well, Todd was on the flight 93 15 years ago this morning, that flight that was leaving from New Jersey headed for San Francisco.
- 37:45SPEAKER_00: The flight where the pilot came over the intercom.
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: Todd was sitting back in row 32, the pilot came off and said, We'd been hijacked by then.
- 37:52SPEAKER_00: Most people knew there'd been yelling, there'd been screaming, and there had been four terrorists, and there'd been some knifings of a flight attendant and another woman who tried to do something.
- 38:04SPEAKER_00: And he said, there are bombs, there are bombs and so forth.
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: And so Todd and others who were at the back of the flight and could do so were started to make cell phone calls.
- 38:11SPEAKER_00: There were about three dozen cell phone calls that went out from the plane as it was being turned around Pennsylvania and heading back to become a flying missile toward the White House, most people believe.
- 38:24SPEAKER_00: And by that time, the people at the back of the plane, they understood that this plane was going to become a guided missile.
- 38:31SPEAKER_00: This plane was going to harm America.
- 38:34SPEAKER_00: Harm America.
- 38:37SPEAKER_00: And Todd said, That can't happen.
- 38:40SPEAKER_00: Todd loved America.
- 38:42SPEAKER_00: He was not about to let a plane like that harm America.
- 38:45SPEAKER_00: He was on the phone, you know, with uh with cell phone operator, and he had Todd had talked to some guys with him at the back of the plane.
- 38:54SPEAKER_00: And Todd was telling her, he said, Would you recite the Lord's Prayer with me?
- 38:58SPEAKER_00: And they did.
- 38:59SPEAKER_00: Would you recite Psalm 23?
- 39:00SPEAKER_00: He recited it over the phone.
- 39:02SPEAKER_00: He put the phone down and he said to the other three guys, he said, Let's roll.
- 39:06SPEAKER_00: And that's when they took off, went to the front, and that's when they fought with the hijackers, and the plane went into a dive, and it crashed, as you know, flight 93 crashed, killing all aboard there in western Pennsylvania.
- 39:20SPEAKER_00: My point is simply this that happened 15 years ago this morning, and as a reminder to me that if you love something, if you think about something, whether it's America or Jesus, then you naturally tend to act according to your thinking, according to your love.
- 39:34SPEAKER_00: And that's what Todd Beamer did, and that's what Paul is saying, you and I need to do.
- 39:39SPEAKER_00: We need to think Christ.
- 39:40SPEAKER_00: And if we do think Christ and love Christ, then we will live Christ.
- 39:44SPEAKER_00: And he will make a difference.
- 39:46SPEAKER_00: He will be more important than anything else.
- 39:49SPEAKER_00: Even theologically, more important than anything else.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: Everybody talks about Charles Spurgeon being this great Calvinist, Baptist Calvinist.
- 39:59SPEAKER_00: Spurgeon, if you don't know, was the pastor of the first megachurch, 10,000 people in London in the late 1800s.
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: And Charles Spurgeon put it this way: he said, in the days of Paul, the sum and substance of theology was Jesus Christ.
- 40:16SPEAKER_00: I'm not ashamed to call myself a Calvinist.
- 40:18SPEAKER_00: I don't hesitate to take the name of Baptist, but if you ask what is my creed, I must answer, it is Jesus Christ.
- 40:30SPEAKER_00: Listen, friends, this book is saying something quite simple.
- 40:32SPEAKER_00: It's simply saying that if Jesus is all you have, you have all you need.
- 40:40SPEAKER_00: All you need.
- 40:42SPEAKER_00: Don't be intimidated that you somehow need something else to become complete in Christ.
- 40:48SPEAKER_00: And some of us take a while to learn that.
- 40:50SPEAKER_00: Corey Tin Boom's probably right when she wrote, You may never know that Jesus is all you need until Jesus is all you have.
- 41:00SPEAKER_00: Touched deeply.
- 41:01SPEAKER_00: I was touched deeply a couple weeks ago by a brother who came up.
- 41:04SPEAKER_00: He'd been shocked by the news this summer that he had cancer, he had a malignant cancer, he may not live long.
- 41:11SPEAKER_00: And when he said to me, you know, this is I I wouldn't I wouldn't part from this for anything in the world.
- 41:18SPEAKER_00: This experience has been the best possible thing for me.
- 41:20SPEAKER_00: I wake up in the morning, every day is so wonderful to me.
- 41:24SPEAKER_00: Jesus Christ means more to me than he's ever meant to me.
- 41:30SPEAKER_00: You see, what he's realized is that Jesus Christ is all he has.
- 41:37SPEAKER_00: And so he's realized that Jesus Christ is all he needs.
- 41:44SPEAKER_00: I've asked Joel and Christina to come out and sing a song, a song we've never sung here at our church before.
- 41:50SPEAKER_00: I want him to close with this song, and as they sing this song, which is entitled All I Need Is You, I'd like you to whisper those words repeatedly to your Savior.
- 42:00SPEAKER_00: All I need is you.
- 42:02SPEAKER_00: All I need is you.
- 42:04SPEAKER_00: Let's pray.
- 42:05SPEAKER_00: Father, we thank you for your son Jesus Christ.
- 42:08SPEAKER_00: We understand clearly that you love him.
- 42:10SPEAKER_00: You called him your beloved son, in whom you are well pleased.
- 42:15SPEAKER_00: And so I'm comforted that we have spoken about this morning the most important subject in heaven and on your heart, the subject of your son Jesus Christ.
- 42:26SPEAKER_00: And also the single most important issue in becoming spiritual Christians, grown up, mature, complete Christians of Jesus Christ.
- 42:36SPEAKER_00: Lord, I confess that thinking Christ every moment is the great challenge of my life every single day.
- 42:46SPEAKER_00: I ask for my dear friends who are with me today in studying this book that you would enable them and enable me by your Holy Spirit to remember every single day what our main job is, and that is to thank Christ.
- 43:00SPEAKER_00: And as a result of thinking Him, to live like Him.
- 43:05SPEAKER_00: It's in His name that we pray.
- 43:07SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 43:23SPEAKER_04: Left my fear by the side of the road.
- 43:26SPEAKER_04: Hear you speak, won't let go, fall to my knees as I lift my hands to pray.
- 43:36SPEAKER_04: God, every reason to be here again.
- 43:40SPEAKER_04: Fathers love and trust me, and all my eyes wanna see is a glimpse of you.
- 43:48SPEAKER_04: All I need is you all I need is you love, is he alone?
- 44:00SPEAKER_04: All I need is you all I need is you alone, is you alone one more day and it's not the same.
- 44:17SPEAKER_04: Your spirit calls my heart to sing, drawn to the voice of my savior once again.
- 44:31SPEAKER_04: Gave his life to Savior.
- 44:34SPEAKER_04: Rest in the thought that you're watching.
- 44:39SPEAKER_04: All I need is you All I need is you is you all I need is you All I need is you all need All I need is here is here All I need All I need is here is here.
- 45:38SPEAKER_04: You are dismissed.
