- 1:51Speaker 3: Plus we're celebrating a bit of a milestone here today.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Steve Bishop of v one hundred is celebrating his forty
- 1:59Speaker 3: fifth and aniversary of working with this company. Now, somebody myself,
- 2:04Speaker 3: I've been in radio a total of thirty seven years.
- 2:06Speaker 3: I've only been here for about five and a half years.
- 2:10Speaker 3: You don't realize what an incredible accomplishment that is in
- 2:13Speaker 3: the world of radio or television for somebody to be
- 2:16Speaker 3: in one place for that long. So we got a
- 2:18Speaker 3: little celebration going on. The mayor stop buying, gave mister
- 2:22Speaker 3: Bishop key to the city. Or in course he, as
- 2:24Speaker 3: everybody always does, ask what does the key go to?
- 2:26Speaker 3: So I don't think they've told him that, but we're
- 2:28Speaker 3: going to bring him in the studio talk about his
- 2:30Speaker 3: career a little bit later on. Some other folks are
- 2:32Speaker 3: going to stop to celebrate mister Bishop as well. And
- 2:34Speaker 3: speaking of celebration, today is my producer, Ryan Nicholson's birthday,
- 2:38Speaker 3: So how about a big shout out to Ryan Nicholson,

- 2:50Speaker 3: Without further ado, though, I want to welcome into the
- 2:52Speaker 3: show the US Senator from West Virginia, shellymore Capito. Good morning, Senator,
- 2:57Speaker 3: and welcome to the show.
- 2:59Speaker 5: Good morning you are you're on a roll here, and
- 3:03Speaker 5: I can I just say something about Steve Bishop because.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Absolutely I have.
- 3:07Speaker 5: Obviously, when I began, which was a long time ago,
- 3:10Speaker 5: Steve was on Steve and Jenny, and I was so
- 3:14Speaker 5: nervous to go down to to the studio to be
- 3:17Speaker 5: interviewed by them or to talk with them. And back
- 3:20Speaker 5: then you brought donuts. He would he would say, bring
- 3:24Speaker 5: the donuts down. He doesn't do that anymore because now
- 3:27Speaker 5: I see him out at all the all the walks
- 3:29Speaker 5: and all the runs, and he's all healthy, and I'm like,
- 3:32Speaker 5: where are the donuts, Senator?
- 3:34Speaker 3: He still does it. Don't get me, I mean, don't
- 3:37Speaker 3: let him fool you. He still does. As a matter
- 3:39Speaker 3: of fact, they always plan these celebrations when I'm on
- 3:43Speaker 3: the air, every time without fail, this, Oh we're all
- 3:45Speaker 3: going to meet at nine o'clock. Oh great, Well, I'm
- 3:48Speaker 3: kind of tied up at nine o'clock. But I can
- 3:50Speaker 3: tell you that in the in the green room and
- 3:52Speaker 3: in our conference room right now where the Steve Bishop
- 3:55Speaker 3: celebrations going on, that I'm missing.
- 3:57Speaker 6: Uh.
- 3:57Speaker 3: There are pastries from Spring Help Pastry, and there are
- 4:02Speaker 3: also some Chick fil A breakfast biscuits as well, and
- 4:06Speaker 3: I'm missing all of it. When I go back in,
- 4:07Speaker 3: there'll be a couple of crumbs here there. I hope
- 4:10Speaker 3: there's some donuts, just for comfort, Just for comfort, all right.
- 4:14Speaker 3: I want to switch gears here, of course, Williams on
- 4:16Speaker 3: government shutdown, but I want to I want to get
- 4:18Speaker 3: serious here for a moment. Of course, the world is
- 4:19Speaker 3: mourning the death of Dick Cheney today, and I thought
- 4:22Speaker 3: I would give you an opportunity to weigh in on
- 4:24Speaker 3: the passing of Dick Cheney.
- 4:25Speaker 5: Well, obviously, my first year in the Congress was when
- 4:28Speaker 5: Dick Cheney was first elected as vice president. He had
- 4:32Speaker 5: a storied history as being Secretary of Defense and chief
- 4:35Speaker 5: of staff to a president at a very young age.
- 4:38Speaker 5: He was a man of few words. He didn't really
- 4:41Speaker 5: talk a lot. He came to Charleston several times to
- 4:43Speaker 5: campaign for me. It was awesome, and so we had
- 4:47Speaker 5: a great relationship. He cared a lot about the people
- 4:51Speaker 5: of West Virginia, understood West Virginia being from a smaller
- 4:55Speaker 5: state like Wyoming, and I think he was a pivotal
- 4:59Speaker 5: person at a really difficult time after those nine to
- 5:01Speaker 5: eleven attacks, and so our relationship. He knew my dad
- 5:06Speaker 5: as well, having been in the house around the same time,
- 5:10Speaker 5: and so I know that he and his I know
- 5:13Speaker 5: that his family had struggles. I think he had his
- 5:15Speaker 5: first heart attack when he was in his mid thirties.
- 5:18Speaker 5: So he was a remarkable individual. But we had that
- 5:22Speaker 5: little smirky smile. So he had a good sense of humor.
- 5:26Speaker 5: But he was just a quiet man, but very patriotic
- 5:30Speaker 5: and we will miss him.
- 5:32Speaker 3: And I have done some reading and watched some biographies
- 5:35Speaker 3: about Dick Cheney, and just what you said there, Senator,
- 5:38Speaker 3: that's one of the things people said about him that
- 5:39Speaker 3: knew in best was he was quiet, but he had
- 5:42Speaker 3: a great sense of humor. And we've all known people
- 5:44Speaker 3: like that in our life. When you look at him
- 5:46Speaker 3: at a fart, you said, well, how's this person funny?
- 5:48Speaker 3: But once you get to know them, they really are.
- 5:51Speaker 3: And that's a couple of articles. And as I said,
- 5:52Speaker 3: biographies i'd seen about Dick Cheney, they said he had
- 5:55Speaker 3: a fantastic sense of humor, a little bit quiet, so
- 5:58Speaker 3: you got to know him, right.
- 6:00Speaker 5: And I think he was a steady hand during an
- 6:03Speaker 5: unsteady time for our nation. And I know there's controversies
- 6:06Speaker 5: as to what the policies that he helped formulate when
- 6:11Speaker 5: President Bush, but you know, we have to go back
- 6:13Speaker 5: to that time when we saw three thousand people killed
- 6:16Speaker 5: in towers in New York. I mean, I don't think
- 6:18Speaker 5: we ever thought something like that could ever happen. And
- 6:22Speaker 5: a strong a man such as Dick Cheney, with a
- 6:24Speaker 5: strong sense of core and sense of love of country,
- 6:29Speaker 5: I think was a pivotal time for us. And he
- 6:32Speaker 5: was also willing to take sort of the slings and
- 6:35Speaker 5: arrows of politics. You know, it's a rough business and
- 6:38Speaker 5: sometimes people fold under the pressure, but he never did.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Talking with US Senator Shelley Moore Capito in the Life
- 6:45Speaker 3: of Dick Cheney, Let's move on to some other things.
- 6:46Speaker 3: I appreciate those kind words, I really do. It's now
- 6:51Speaker 3: I think the tide for the longest shutdown, governmental shutdown,
- 6:54Speaker 3: partial shutdown, whatever you want to call it in US history,
- 6:56Speaker 3: is that right.
- 6:58Speaker 5: It is, and it's certainly not a milestone to be
- 7:01Speaker 5: proud of. It is miserable for everybody and becoming very
- 7:05Speaker 5: personally miserable to a lot of West Virginians, whether it's
- 7:09Speaker 5: food or other services contracts, et cetera, or people that
- 7:15Speaker 5: are working for the government or tsa. Folks, it's really
- 7:17Speaker 5: really rough and hopefully this will this will end this week.
- 7:22Speaker 5: There are some there's some blue sky here, but not
- 7:27Speaker 5: enough right now for me to make that prediction. Unfortunately.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Well, and we know, you know, the last week, last Friday,
- 7:33Speaker 3: I guess it was a couple of judges came out
- 7:36Speaker 3: and said that they had to be they had that
- 7:39Speaker 3: the Snap benefits had to be the money had to
- 7:42Speaker 3: go into it. And we know, as you said, there
- 7:44Speaker 3: is some blue sky, if you will, but it's going
- 7:46Speaker 3: to be slow coming to get these people caught up
- 7:49Speaker 3: because it's not a Okay, we're good, let's start, you know,
- 7:52Speaker 3: loading the cards. That's not the way that this thing works.
- 7:54Speaker 3: And we're talking about center, we're talking about somewhere like
- 7:57Speaker 3: sixteen percent, as you said, millions of West virgin Onions
- 8:00Speaker 3: that didn't have their Snap cards loaded on Saturday.
- 8:04Speaker 7: I know.
- 8:04Speaker 5: And I actually heard a story yesterday of a woman
- 8:07Speaker 5: who was shopping in a Walmart and her cart was
- 8:10Speaker 5: full and when she got to the register, you know,
- 8:14Speaker 5: the cashier I had to say, you don't have any
- 8:16Speaker 5: money on your card, and she just left in tears,
- 8:18Speaker 5: had to leave the basket and everything. She didn't have
- 8:20Speaker 5: enough money. And I'm sure that was happening everywhere. It's
- 8:23Speaker 5: a disservice to everybody. Some states are able to pay.
- 8:26Speaker 5: I know the governor and others have really tried to
- 8:28Speaker 5: fill the gap here, and I'm very pleased about that.
- 8:31Speaker 5: But there shouldn't be a gap to fill. I mean,
- 8:34Speaker 5: we've had this vote, we're going to have it again
- 8:36Speaker 5: fourteen times to open the government. This could have been
- 8:39Speaker 5: avoided thirty five, thirty whatever day we're on, thirty five
- 8:42Speaker 5: or thirty six days days ago while we negotiated other
- 8:46Speaker 5: things like healthcare and other things. But the politics have
- 8:49Speaker 5: gotten in the way, unfortunately, and now we're hearing well,
- 8:52Speaker 5: I'll wait till the elections today in Virginia and New
- 8:56Speaker 5: Jersey and New York. I mean, there's always another milestone
- 8:59Speaker 5: that was that we have to get through before five
- 9:02Speaker 5: saying Democrats will vote and open the government. That's what
- 9:06Speaker 5: we're down to, all right.
- 9:07Speaker 3: I know you're on the very limited schedule, So I
- 9:09Speaker 3: do want to ask you one other thing. Though the
- 9:11Speaker 3: President has come out and said maybe it's time in
- 9:14Speaker 3: this situation or others, that we that we need to
- 9:16Speaker 3: do away with the filibuster. Your thoughts on.
- 9:18Speaker 5: That, well, I am on record and I've said many
- 9:21Speaker 5: times that I don't believe eliminating the filibuster is a
- 9:26Speaker 5: smart thing for the future of our country, simply because
- 9:29Speaker 5: it preserves rights of the minority and it forces us
- 9:33Speaker 5: into negotiation into I think, better solutions. And so if
- 9:37Speaker 5: the you know, if the argument is the Democrats are
- 9:40Speaker 5: going to be in charge and they're going to do it, well,
- 9:42Speaker 5: they're going to pack the court, do voting rights, work
- 9:45Speaker 5: on abortion and gun rights, other things that they you know,
- 9:51Speaker 5: QW too. And I just think that for the tradition
- 9:55Speaker 5: and for the future, that the the filibuster preserve, nerves
- 10:01Speaker 5: and leads us to better policies. So and I also
- 10:04Speaker 5: signed a letter in December of twenty seventeen that said
- 10:08Speaker 5: that I would not vote to eliminate the filibuster. You know,
- 10:10Speaker 5: I don't write letters and make promises and then take
- 10:13Speaker 5: them away. So I'm pretty much locked in.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Senor Shelley Moore capital give me about thirty seconds. I
- 10:18Speaker 3: know you have to go. But to your message to
- 10:19Speaker 3: the people of West Virginia, well, I would have.
- 10:23Speaker 5: To say to that this week that looks like we've
- 10:26Speaker 5: got a little blue sky here to reopen the government.
- 10:29Speaker 5: The disservice that's been paid to West Virginians is so
- 10:32Speaker 5: avoidable without the political scenario that we find ourselves in.
- 10:37Speaker 5: And I've been working hard to trying to find solutions
- 10:39Speaker 5: across the aisle, which is I would think most people
- 10:42Speaker 5: would expect me to do.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Senor Shelley Moore Capito, appreciate you being here. Thanks a lot, great, thanks,
- 10:47Speaker 3: have a good day.

- 16:35Speaker 11: for our forty anniversary, get back to a good festival
- 16:37Speaker 11: format and just you know, we like to highlight films
- 16:40Speaker 11: at our local cinema and in our festival that won't
- 16:43Speaker 11: show up at you know, the local big theaters and
- 16:47Speaker 11: things like that. Most of these are international and independent
- 16:50Speaker 11: films that might not even play in the US at
- 16:52Speaker 11: all in some cases. Talk about your interest in this, yeah,
- 16:55Speaker 11: So I first became aware of it probably twenty five
- 16:58Speaker 11: years ago when I was a student at State, you know,
- 17:01Speaker 11: I was in the communications program there and a lot
- 17:03Speaker 11: of the professors were told me about this film festival
- 17:06Speaker 11: coming up. So I started going way back then, and
- 17:09Speaker 11: I've been on and off over the years many times.
- 17:12Speaker 11: So it was twenty seventeen when they started opening the cinema.
- 17:15Speaker 11: The VAUNT started volunteering down there and helping out, you know,
- 17:19Speaker 11: doing a little bit of painting down there back in
- 17:21Speaker 11: the day, and then eventually just joined the board and
- 17:24Speaker 11: became the president of few years after that.
- 17:26Speaker 3: So we'll talk about your personal interest. Well, what is
- 17:28Speaker 3: it about international film that I mean, because that you know,
- 17:32Speaker 3: kind of got you involved in this. Why do you
- 17:33Speaker 3: like it so much?
- 17:34Speaker 11: I like just the idea of, you know, getting to see,
- 17:37Speaker 11: you know, the world through other people's perspectives. Right, you know,
- 17:41Speaker 11: we're gonna we have films from China, Norway, Ireland, Morocco,
- 17:47Speaker 11: so we just get to see the world through a
- 17:50Speaker 11: very different set of eyes, especially like the Chinese one
- 17:54Speaker 11: is very outside of most of our lived experiences at
- 17:57Speaker 11: the time.
- 17:57Speaker 3: So all right, and where is the first and win
- 18:00Speaker 3: is the festival?
- 18:01Speaker 11: So it's November thirteenth through the sixteenth. It's going to
- 18:03Speaker 11: take place largely at Park Place Cinemas and then also
- 18:07Speaker 11: at our cinema underneath the Taylor Books, the Flora Lee
- 18:10Speaker 11: Hart Cohen Cinema. So we've got films playing both days
- 18:14Speaker 11: in both places until the evening when we all kind
- 18:16Speaker 11: of come together for our headlining features.
- 18:19Speaker 3: I'm just and we'll get to those features here in
- 18:20Speaker 3: a moment. Again, we're talking to Delford chaff in West Virginia.
- 18:23Speaker 3: International Film festival. I just wonder what a difference that
- 18:27Speaker 3: the Internet has made in all these because, as you said,
- 18:29Speaker 3: a lot of these films that you're going to be
- 18:30Speaker 3: showing aren't necessarily ones that you're going to see at
- 18:33Speaker 3: your at your multiplex and so on and so forth.
- 18:35Speaker 3: You're probably not going to find them on in many cases,
- 18:38Speaker 3: even on some of the some of the streaming services
- 18:40Speaker 3: one of the more quote unquote traditional ones. But how
- 18:43Speaker 3: has it changed with the with the internet.
- 18:45Speaker 11: Well, I mean not just the internet, but home theater
- 18:47Speaker 11: as well. Yeah, has certainly, you know, changed the amount
- 18:51Speaker 11: that people go to the movies and just in general,
- 18:53Speaker 11: I think, you know, the studios and the films are
- 18:56Speaker 11: being made also have something to play in that sometimes.
- 18:59Speaker 11: But and even when we see that, it depends on
- 19:02Speaker 11: what the movie is, whether people are interested in coming
- 19:04Speaker 11: out to see it versus staying home or watching it online.
- 19:08Speaker 11: But yeah, even though you can see so many films
- 19:12Speaker 11: now at home on the internet, some of the films
- 19:13Speaker 11: we're playing are I still haven't been able to find
- 19:16Speaker 11: streaming anywhere. So, you know, the film I mentioned from
- 19:20Speaker 11: Norway that director has twenty years of films and I
- 19:22Speaker 11: haven't been able to find any of them streaming.
- 19:25Speaker 3: So given to it's not showing up on the on
- 19:29Speaker 3: the local streaming service cars what you're saying.
- 19:31Speaker 11: Yeah, some of them eventually will, but not all of them.
- 19:34Speaker 3: It's always interesting to me, you know, in this time
- 19:38Speaker 3: of uh as someone once called it short attention span theater, right,
- 19:41Speaker 3: that we all have now when everything's TikTok and everything's
- 19:45Speaker 3: like five ten second yeah, you know, snapchat videos or
- 19:48Speaker 3: YouTube or whatever, and if it's over a minute, you know,
- 19:51Speaker 3: you're not going to have people anymore.
- 19:53Speaker 11: Yeah, we do have some you know, help for some
- 19:56Speaker 11: of those people too. We have four shorts that are
- 19:58Speaker 11: made okay here in West Virginia.
- 20:00Speaker 3: I say that because this proves though that there is
- 20:03Speaker 3: still something. Oh yeah, you said for quote unquote long form,
- 20:06Speaker 3: which would be anything more than about ten minutes, right,
- 20:09Speaker 3: talk about those shorts that you have.
- 20:10Speaker 11: So we have four West Virginia kind of short films.
- 20:13Speaker 11: One is Breaking Them Old by Justin Litton. It's a
- 20:16Speaker 11: story on Blinko Glass. It's about thirty minutes long. There's
- 20:20Speaker 11: another film called In Waiting and by local filmmaker he
- 20:23Speaker 11: used to be. He lives in California now, but he's
- 20:25Speaker 11: from here. There's a film called Coming Home by Doug
- 20:28Speaker 11: and Brogno who you might know. It's about no the name,
- 20:31Speaker 11: yeah yeah, de institutionalization here in West Virginia. And then
- 20:35Speaker 11: finally there's a film called Why Ukraine Matters. It's kind
- 20:38Speaker 11: of talks about the similarities between the people and Naplatcha
- 20:40Speaker 11: and the people in Ukraine's.
- 20:43Speaker 3: And that's interesting to me because when you think international
- 20:46Speaker 3: Film Festival, automatically people's minds go to someplace totally different.
- 20:52Speaker 3: And there are the I'm sure artsy and the big
- 20:55Speaker 3: movies and things, but this takes in a lot of ground.
- 20:57Speaker 11: What you're talking about here. We've got, you know, all
- 21:00Speaker 11: of different films. I mean, there are some artsier pictures,
- 21:03Speaker 11: like the Chinese film is very cinemilarity. It's very like
- 21:06Speaker 11: are just a real life experience almost, It's almost like
- 21:09Speaker 11: you're watching these people live their lives instead of a movie.
- 21:12Speaker 3: But what uh, what are some of the things that
- 21:15Speaker 3: I mean, I know you're going to be a part
- 21:16Speaker 3: of it, but what are some of the things that
- 21:17Speaker 3: you that that excited you about this particular festival and
- 21:20Speaker 3: the films are going to be shown.
- 21:22Speaker 11: Just the opportunity to get it back, especially at park Place.
- 21:25Speaker 11: It's kind of a cool opportunity.
- 21:26Speaker 3: So we had to text somebody said they thought park
- 21:27Speaker 3: Place was closed. It is closed, but but it's open
- 21:30Speaker 3: for this festival.
- 21:31Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 21:31Speaker 11: The City of Charleston owns it and they're looking for
- 21:34Speaker 11: a new tenant in there, but I don't know any
- 21:36Speaker 11: updates on that. But they are being generous enough to
- 21:39Speaker 11: let us use that space for a couple of days,
- 21:41Speaker 11: and they've been maintaining it and stuff.
- 21:42Speaker 3: Yeah. How I was going to say, how are the
- 21:44Speaker 3: facilities there, because it's nice a maintain.
- 21:47Speaker 11: Yeah, there's some things have been taken out obviously, but
- 21:50Speaker 11: you know, they just did some updated work on the
- 21:52Speaker 11: restrooms and things like that and everything's I love.
- 21:54Speaker 3: I love Delford. I love when people when cities, you know,
- 21:58Speaker 3: community groups, people like yourself, when they get involved with
- 22:01Speaker 3: these with these older theaters and they say because they're
- 22:03Speaker 3: still I mean I know they do they're doing and
- 22:05Speaker 3: sometimes it's not all films, you know, sometimes there could
- 22:07Speaker 3: be theater. It could be music. I know the folks
- 22:10Speaker 3: at the Alburn Theatre and saying albits of double job.
- 22:12Speaker 3: The LaBelle Theater in South Charleston. We have a theater
- 22:14Speaker 3: in my hometown called the Coalfield Jamboree, the old Logan
- 22:17Speaker 3: Theater that seats well over a thousand people and they
- 22:21Speaker 3: still they don't use it for films, but they still
- 22:23Speaker 3: use it for things in the community. They have concerts
- 22:26Speaker 3: there and things of that nature. I love when people,
- 22:28Speaker 3: mainly volunteers, come together bring these things back to life.
- 22:31Speaker 11: Yeah. Now, our friends at the Mountaincraft Film Fest weapon Clarksburg,
- 22:34Speaker 11: they've been using the Robinson Grand the pasts.
- 22:36Speaker 3: It's a theater.
- 22:37Speaker 11: That's a nice space.
- 22:38Speaker 3: What a great facility it is. But Dave Alan show
- 22:40Speaker 3: in five eighty Live is brought to you part by
- 22:42Speaker 3: fresh Air Filters of Tayses Valley. Fresh Air, your trusted
- 22:44Speaker 3: filter experts are both your home or business called three
- 22:47Speaker 3: zero four four four zero one one zero four. Visit
- 22:50Speaker 3: fresh Air Filters dot us because everyone deserves fresh air.
- 22:53Speaker 3: So there's gonna be a lot of excitement around this.
- 22:56Speaker 3: And hats off to you and the others for for
- 22:58Speaker 3: for bringing this thing back.
- 22:59Speaker 13: Man.
- 23:00Speaker 11: Thanks, it's a it's a you know, we're an all
- 23:01Speaker 11: volunteer organization, our board, and you know we're all kind
- 23:04Speaker 11: of coming together to make this happen. One thing I'll mention,
- 23:07Speaker 11: we do have a couple workshops on Saturday morning with
- 23:10Speaker 11: Tijer Bumgardner is a film professor at and filmmaker locally,
- 23:13Speaker 11: uh and Clara Lehman and Jonathan Lecoke out a Helvisha
- 23:17Speaker 11: who owned an animation company up there and made a
- 23:19Speaker 11: couple of great films that we've shown recently. And then
- 23:22Speaker 11: on Sunday morning we have a brunch kind of meet
- 23:24Speaker 11: up with the Westernian Film Office and the Filmmakers Guild,
- 23:28Speaker 11: so they're all going to be there. That'll be over
- 23:29Speaker 11: at Coco's.
- 23:30Speaker 3: And you mentioned the Film Office in West Virginia. I
- 23:33Speaker 3: know that there has been such a movement on over
- 23:36Speaker 3: the years to make West Virginia a place where people
- 23:39Speaker 3: can come not only to produce great films by West Virginian's,
- 23:43Speaker 3: you know, but also to get other people to come here.
- 23:46Speaker 3: Talk about that.
- 23:46Speaker 11: Yeah, I know. Dave Lavender's head of the Film office
- 23:48Speaker 11: right now. Pam Haynes was over back in the day
- 23:50Speaker 11: and she was very involved with the film festival years ago.
- 23:53Speaker 11: But now, yeah, Dave Lavender is doing a great job
- 23:55Speaker 11: over there, bringing you know, films and shoots and stuff
- 23:59Speaker 11: into the end of the state. There's a lot of talent
- 24:01Speaker 11: here that gets used elsewhere as well.
- 24:03Speaker 3: So well, and it always you know, when there's a
- 24:06Speaker 3: film that's being made in a West Virginia is the
- 24:08Speaker 3: setting or it's got West Virginia, the fact that they
- 24:11Speaker 3: film it in New Jersey or something like that, it's
- 24:14Speaker 3: just I'm just like, why not just do it here?
- 24:16Speaker 11: Yeah, it's probably cheaper here.
- 24:18Speaker 3: Yeah, well yeah, I mean, we know, the cost of
- 24:20Speaker 3: living stuff is cheaper here as well, and you're gonna
- 24:23Speaker 3: probably get a cheaper meal catering. Catering is going to
- 24:26Speaker 3: be a lot to talk about the role of the
- 24:28Speaker 3: volunteers though, I mean, like yourself and others in order
- 24:31Speaker 3: to to to bring this thing together.
- 24:33Speaker 11: Yeah, as I said, our board is all volunteers, So
- 24:35Speaker 11: it's all of us, you know, working together in our
- 24:37Speaker 11: spare time to kind of put this together and research
- 24:40Speaker 11: these films and you know, do all the marketing and
- 24:43Speaker 11: reaching out and actually, you know, we have a call
- 24:45Speaker 11: out to volunteers right now to help us during the festival,
- 24:48Speaker 11: and we've got a number of people you know that
- 24:50Speaker 11: aren't on our board regularly showing up to do that,
- 24:53Speaker 11: you know, check people in you know, run the concession
- 24:55Speaker 11: stands like those types of things. So it's a it's
- 24:58Speaker 11: a lot of work. And I have volunt tiered down
- 25:01Speaker 11: at the cinema like as I mentioned in the past
- 25:02Speaker 11: when they're building it, and so you know, we're doing
- 25:04Speaker 11: some painting down there right now. So if anybody has
- 25:06Speaker 11: a paint brush they want to break down this weekend,
- 25:09Speaker 11: let me know you need volunteers.
- 25:11Speaker 3: How can people reach you if they would like to
- 25:13Speaker 3: volunteer for this thing or just to learn more. We'll
- 25:14Speaker 3: get to the websites and social media and so on,
- 25:17Speaker 3: but yea for you personally, if somebody would like to volunteer.
- 25:19Speaker 11: I mean, I'm on Facebook, as Delfred Chafin. I'm pretty
- 25:22Speaker 11: easy to find. But you know, just check out our
- 25:24Speaker 11: website as you mentioned of VFF dot org is the
- 25:26Speaker 11: best place to get a hold of us, or just
- 25:28Speaker 11: search for us on the Facebook or the Instagram.
- 25:30Speaker 3: So all right, and they give us the dates again
- 25:33Speaker 3: in the locations.
- 25:33Speaker 11: It's November thirteenth through the sixteenth. It's going to be
- 25:36Speaker 11: largely at Park Place. But when we're having to each
- 25:39Speaker 11: films show at least twice, so some of those will
- 25:41Speaker 11: be at the floor. Lee as well. Friday night we
- 25:44Speaker 11: have a movie trivia night at five Street and our
- 25:46Speaker 11: brunches at Cocos. So we have four different locations, all
- 25:49Speaker 11: kind of walkable there within central Charleston here.
- 25:53Speaker 3: And we'll give a big shout out to the folks
- 25:54Speaker 3: at five Street because we have a great partnership with
- 25:57Speaker 3: them there. Our sister station in the Mountain is going
- 25:58Speaker 3: to be there live Thursday night. Coco's. By the way,
- 26:01Speaker 3: if you know this or not, Coco's was the people's
- 26:04Speaker 3: choice champions at the Mac and Cheese Festival at Capital
- 26:07Speaker 3: Market this past week.
- 26:08Speaker 11: I did not make it that because, as I said,
- 26:10Speaker 11: I was painting.
- 26:10Speaker 3: You're busy painting and you need more painters right now,
- 26:13Speaker 3: all right, Delfred, I appreciate you taking time to be here.
- 26:15Speaker 3: Man now all time, all right, to hang out with
- 26:17Speaker 3: me one second. A Dave Alan show on five eighty

- 31:05Speaker 3: own millionaire mommy, either it's her two million dollar condo
- 31:09Speaker 3: in Chelsea, Oregon, in her Columbia sumpsonized apartment about handing
- 31:13Speaker 3: over fifty to sixty percent of our wealth to the
- 31:16Speaker 3: New York Tax Department or to any poor person in
- 31:20Speaker 3: New York City, twenty two minutes away from ten. We're
- 31:23Speaker 3: celebrating a milestone today. We're celebrating Ryan Nicholson's birthday, our
- 31:28Speaker 3: producer Ryan Today's birthday. But we're also is it really
- 31:32Speaker 3: but yeah, it is. But we're also celebrating a little
- 31:34Speaker 3: bit our guy, Steve Bishop, forty five years. You've been
- 31:39Speaker 3: with this company, mister Bishop, forty five years, not entirely
- 31:42Speaker 3: this company, Okay, okay.
- 31:44Speaker 17: So I don't know how it's been nineteen ninety early
- 31:49Speaker 17: nineties they bought V one hundred.
- 31:51Speaker 3: Okay, okay, And so it's been thirty thirty some years
- 31:55Speaker 3: with them, and it hasn't always all been in this building, right, Uh, Okay,
- 31:58Speaker 3: talk about let's back up, let's talk about your your
- 32:03Speaker 3: coming to Charleston.
- 32:04Speaker 17: By coming to Charleston was not expected I but I
- 32:08Speaker 17: was looking for somewhere to go to get more experience
- 32:12Speaker 17: because I was working in Charlotte and people asked me,
- 32:14Speaker 17: why did you leave Charlotte to come here? Well, this
- 32:18Speaker 17: was a better opportunity for me at the point of
- 32:20Speaker 17: the career, my career that I was in, so I
- 32:23Speaker 17: came here. It's almost like I went from the major markets,
- 32:28Speaker 17: you know, like the big ball team back to the
- 32:31Speaker 17: minor leagues. But that's that's kind of the thinking then.
- 32:37Speaker 17: So I would come here, get a little bit better,
- 32:40Speaker 17: get some more experience, and I would move along up,
- 32:44Speaker 17: you know, to a bigger city. Well who knew, because
- 32:48Speaker 17: I said earlier Charleston was like the one year, one
- 32:51Speaker 17: to two year plan, and so I thought, okay, it's
- 32:54Speaker 17: November nineteen eighty. I get here Election Day nineteen eighty.
- 32:58Speaker 17: My first day on V one hundred was a day
- 33:00Speaker 17: Ronald Reagan was elected president the first time. That's how
- 33:03Speaker 17: I've remembered this.
- 33:04Speaker 3: Do you remember any music that you played on that
- 33:05Speaker 3: first thing?
- 33:06Speaker 7: No?
- 33:06Speaker 17: And what shift were you working? I came to work
- 33:09Speaker 17: in the and I was on in the afternoon. Okay,
- 33:11Speaker 17: So I moved to the morning show in February of
- 33:13Speaker 17: nineteen eighty four, and I've been doing it ever since been.
- 33:17Speaker 17: I was thinking about this last night. There have been
- 33:19Speaker 17: four people that did the V one hundred morning show
- 33:22Speaker 17: three prior to me, and so in me and whoever
- 33:25Speaker 17: inherits it.
- 33:26Speaker 3: When I leave, you're not leaving.
- 33:28Speaker 17: You don't think? No, No, I don't know. I don't
- 33:31Speaker 17: really know when when it's enough. I really don't. I
- 33:34Speaker 17: think about It's more in my head now than it's
- 33:37Speaker 17: ever been. Well, it does, because people start asking you. Yeah,
- 33:40Speaker 17: I turned sixty years old. People going started going when
- 33:42Speaker 17: are you retire? And I went, I've never even thought
- 33:45Speaker 17: about it, never.
- 33:47Speaker 3: Sane I mean, are you sixty years old?
- 33:51Speaker 11: No?
- 33:51Speaker 3: No, fifty five, fifty five.
- 33:54Speaker 17: But you got a long way.
- 33:55Speaker 3: But I've been doing this for thirty seven years with
- 33:58Speaker 3: this company, only for five though I don't intent I'll
- 34:00Speaker 3: ever return. I mean I'm just gonna have one day
- 34:03Speaker 3: to hear and that's it. I'm done, and Ryan or somebody,
- 34:07Speaker 3: or Ryan Junior or somebody's gonna have to come in
- 34:09Speaker 3: and just like these. It's funny you.
- 34:11Speaker 17: Say that, because I've had people tell me. My former
- 34:15Speaker 17: wife told me one time, she said, you're Paul. You're
- 34:18Speaker 17: the Paul Howard. For those of you who don't know,
- 34:20Speaker 17: Paul Howard worked until Paul Howard would have come to
- 34:23Speaker 17: work the day he died at ninety three if he
- 34:26Speaker 17: could have, but he couldn't. But my former wife told
- 34:29Speaker 17: me one time, she said, you're you're You're Paul Howard,
- 34:32Speaker 17: and she said you'll probably die on the air. Now,
- 34:36Speaker 17: she wasn't being mean, she was just being honest, like
- 34:38Speaker 17: she knows how knew how much I cared about what
- 34:41Speaker 17: I do and how much how much I've enjoyed it
- 34:44Speaker 17: and how much it's my it's been my life. That
- 34:48Speaker 17: she said, you probably drop dead on the air. And
- 34:51Speaker 17: I said, well, I hope that I hit the microphone
- 34:52Speaker 17: and turn it on as it happens, so that everybody
- 34:55Speaker 17: can tell maybe call nine one one. Steve seems to
- 34:58Speaker 17: be not functioning.
- 35:00Speaker 3: Steve has more dead air than normal.
- 35:02Speaker 17: Yes, there might be something going on. You better get
- 35:05Speaker 17: the authorities out there.
- 35:06Speaker 3: So I don't know if you answered it. I but
- 35:08Speaker 3: do do you remember any of the music you played?
- 35:10Speaker 3: Because I'm trying to think I'm kind of a mute February.
- 35:12Speaker 3: I'm sorry. In November of nineteen eighty, John Lennon was
- 35:17Speaker 3: still living because he was killed the following month, So
- 35:19Speaker 3: I don't know. Yes, that album had come out, Double Fantasy,
- 35:21Speaker 3: I think it was out at that time.
- 35:22Speaker 17: She might have been playing I was playing songs.
- 35:24Speaker 3: Off there, starting Over, Yeah, yeah, all right.
- 35:27Speaker 17: Starting Over I think was the hit song.
- 35:29Speaker 18: Then.
- 35:29Speaker 17: Yes, that that's talk about something happened, major happening in
- 35:34Speaker 17: your career, because you remember things like that. And I
- 35:38Speaker 17: wasn't on the air then. That was that night, but
- 35:40Speaker 17: I remember being watching Monday Night like everybody, and they
- 35:44Speaker 17: broke in and said what had happened? And I remember
- 35:47Speaker 17: the next morning. You know, I didn't work that morning,
- 35:51Speaker 17: but I remember the guy that was on and he
- 35:55Speaker 17: just he was a huge Beatles fan. He was just devastated.
- 35:58Speaker 19: It was.
- 35:59Speaker 17: It was terrible. I remember, I was this is the
- 36:02Speaker 17: weird for me. I was on the air in Charlotte
- 36:06Speaker 17: not on the air at the time, but I had
- 36:07Speaker 17: to work that night when Elvis died, and that I
- 36:11Speaker 17: didn't I had to ask my boss, I don't know
- 36:13Speaker 17: what to do. Tell me how I should be on
- 36:16Speaker 17: the radio because I was so new at it. Yeah,
- 36:18Speaker 17: I just said, I don't know, I don't know, and
- 36:20Speaker 17: he just he laid it out there. But that was
- 36:23Speaker 17: that was huge. There have been lots of things. I
- 36:26Speaker 17: remember this. This will maybe not be funny to some people,
- 36:30Speaker 17: but the day that Ronald Reagan was shot, remember that. Yeah,
- 36:36Speaker 17: when I was working in the afternoon, the guy, the
- 36:38Speaker 17: guy that was my newsman, he he hadn't come in
- 36:42Speaker 17: to tell me. There are people calling and saying, I
- 36:46Speaker 17: don't know if you heard, but the President's been shot
- 36:48Speaker 17: in Washington, and so that's a pretty big deal. I
- 36:52Speaker 17: go into the newsroom and I and I said, hey,
- 36:56Speaker 17: I want to embarrass him here. But I don't know
- 36:59Speaker 17: if he's still around or not. But I said, people
- 37:02Speaker 17: are calling telling me that the president's been shot. And
- 37:05Speaker 17: he goes, yeah, he goes, I'm going to get that
- 37:07Speaker 17: on and those at the top of the eye. I'm thinking, like,
- 37:11Speaker 17: I think you need to come in here.
- 37:12Speaker 3: Right now and let everybody know that we're talking to
- 37:15Speaker 3: Steve Bishop celebrating his forty fifth anniversary here of a
- 37:17Speaker 3: Dave Islands show on five Any Lives. Brought to you
- 37:19Speaker 3: probably by Pinnacle Consultants. Pinnacle offers a four phase assessment
- 37:22Speaker 3: for your properties, inspection, sampling, an analysis, comprehensive reporting and
- 37:26Speaker 3: management planning. Check out Pinnacle Corp dot net. Because what
- 37:28Speaker 3: you don't know can't hurt you. Was radio something, Steve,
- 37:31Speaker 3: what you always wanted to do? I think about the
- 37:35Speaker 3: fifth grade is when I became fascinated with it. And
- 37:39Speaker 3: what was it that led to you?
- 37:41Speaker 20: Well?
- 37:42Speaker 17: I thought, okay, I saw a guy at the County Fair.
- 37:44Speaker 3: Everybody's got a storyline doing his radio.
- 37:46Speaker 17: Show remotely playing forty five records remote, you know, on
- 37:52Speaker 17: the location there, and I thought that looks kind of
- 37:55Speaker 17: cool and I don't know, and then I thought it
- 37:59Speaker 17: might be a good way to get girls.
- 38:00Speaker 19: You know.
- 38:03Speaker 17: Well, it's funny. I met both my wives through my job.
- 38:06Speaker 3: So how did that turn out for I'm just kidding,
- 38:08Speaker 3: I can get.
- 38:11Speaker 17: Well, we're over to.
- 38:12Speaker 3: Okay, Well, there's still hope though, we're done. You know,
- 38:15Speaker 3: we're done. Jex says, uh Dave's right, Steve, You're not
- 38:18Speaker 3: gonna leave because we're not gonna let you leave. Congratulations,
- 38:21Speaker 3: Thank you, congratulate Neil Cooper. Let me bring Neale Cooper
- 38:24Speaker 3: in here just for a moment.
- 38:27Speaker 17: What you've heard enough of my old radio stories.
- 38:29Speaker 3: No, no, no, no, no, I'm not I'm not.
- 38:31Speaker 17: I can't. I can't even feel out why you'd want
- 38:33Speaker 17: me down here on this show to start with. You
- 38:35Speaker 17: must have who canceled?
- 38:36Speaker 3: Well, if you, if you must know, Steve so so
- 38:41Speaker 3: Dale Cooper, you are a Charleston guy. Okay, I am not,
- 38:45Speaker 3: but I grew up. I know you hate hearing that,
- 38:48Speaker 3: but I hear it all the time too. I grew
- 38:49Speaker 3: up listening to Steve Bishop idea. But you saw him
- 38:52Speaker 3: out and about in the community growing up in Charleston. Yeah,
- 38:54Speaker 3: I did see Steve.
- 38:55Speaker 18: Steve was a fixture of my I hate to say childhood, Steve,
- 38:58Speaker 18: but to some degree, and nineteen eighty I was.
- 39:00Speaker 3: I don't.
- 39:01Speaker 17: I don't hate that. That's okay. It's forty five years
- 39:03Speaker 17: a long time, it is.
- 39:04Speaker 21: It is.
- 39:05Speaker 18: I was six in nineteen eighty, so.
- 39:07Speaker 17: I'm almost sixty eight years old now. It's okay.
- 39:10Speaker 18: And I remember I remember Steve later Bill Shahan and
- 39:13Speaker 18: all of the big guys for the Charleston area, and
- 39:16Speaker 18: I V one hundred was over in Kannall City for
- 39:18Speaker 18: the longest time, right it was.
- 39:19Speaker 17: We were on top of the right Ad drug store
- 39:21Speaker 17: when I got here, and now I don't even know
- 39:24Speaker 17: what it is.
- 39:25Speaker 18: It's it's incredible because growing up in Kanall City, we
- 39:29Speaker 18: had our phone number over there was nine two five
- 39:31Speaker 18: eight six o and UH the for the AM station
- 39:36Speaker 18: at V one hundred was six eighty at the time, right,
- 39:38Speaker 18: So we would get on every especially Christmas morning, we
- 39:41Speaker 18: would get UH phone calls for for for nine to
- 39:45Speaker 18: five six eight oh so for for six eighty. So
- 39:47Speaker 18: I always knew somehow or nother that six eighty and
- 39:49Speaker 18: V one hundred was somehow related, yes, back then, and
- 39:53Speaker 18: Steve was one of the UH was the guy that
- 39:56Speaker 18: I knew as far as radio goes, that that was Steve.
- 39:58Speaker 18: And I was in Rady. I got in the first time.
- 40:01Speaker 18: Don Cook brought me on in the early nineties and
- 40:04Speaker 18: I worked here, but I didn't work with Steve a
- 40:06Speaker 18: lot then. I was mostly overnight. Maybe we saw each
- 40:09Speaker 18: other occasionally in the mornings or something like that if
- 40:10Speaker 18: I worked an overnight shift or I worked over on CHS,
- 40:14Speaker 18: So I didn't see Steve a lot when I came back,
- 40:16Speaker 18: though in twenty ten. I worked here twice before I
- 40:18Speaker 18: came back in twenty ten, and I've been here constantly
- 40:20Speaker 18: since then. The first time that I was super nervous
- 40:24Speaker 18: on radio was was doing traffic for Steve and Jenny.
- 40:27Speaker 18: It's the only time that I was ever super nervous
- 40:30Speaker 18: was was work. It was just it was like because
- 40:33Speaker 18: it was somebody that you knew, so like like I
- 40:35Speaker 18: didn't know but sort of knew and I and I
- 40:37Speaker 18: was like, man, I want to screw this up, and
- 40:39Speaker 18: I don't want to screw up like the best morning
- 40:40Speaker 18: show in the city, and I don't want to be
- 40:42Speaker 18: I don't know what I want to do to ruin
- 40:44Speaker 18: this thing. And all my days I've been nervous about
- 40:46Speaker 18: other things, like for me, but as far as just
- 40:49Speaker 18: being on the air, sharing air with someone, Being on
- 40:51Speaker 18: air with Stephen Jenny was the first time and maybe
- 40:53Speaker 18: the only time I've ever been really nervous.
- 40:54Speaker 3: Where's Jenny, By the way she is?
- 40:56Speaker 2: She?
- 40:57Speaker 17: I don't know, she must not have a month time.
- 40:59Speaker 6: I have a lot.
- 41:01Speaker 3: Oh, speak of the devil.
- 41:03Speaker 17: Well, Coop, thank you for that. And I'm sure after
- 41:06Speaker 17: you worked with me on the Metro News Hotline show,
- 41:09Speaker 17: you're like, oh my god, why was I older?
- 41:12Speaker 20: You didn't even get a chance to get to that.
- 41:13Speaker 18: Honestly, some of the best times I've ever had.
- 41:15Speaker 17: Oh, thank you.
- 41:16Speaker 3: Well, we'll say that for the fiftieth anniversary. How's that?
- 41:18Speaker 17: Well, that's next year. Fifty years here. Oh that means
- 41:23Speaker 17: I got to work for five more years exactly.
- 41:25Speaker 3: But Dave Iland showing five Indy Line brought to you

- 41:48Speaker 3: Jenny Murray. How you doing.
- 41:49Speaker 6: I'm good.
- 41:50Speaker 22: I was told nine fifty to speak.
- 41:52Speaker 17: Okay, no, you were told nine forty.
- 41:55Speaker 3: Oh, sorry about that. Here we go we're going to
- 41:58Speaker 3: take it to this point and the partner ship's going
- 42:00Speaker 3: to end today.
- 42:01Speaker 17: I do have add so there you talk about if
- 42:04Speaker 17: it hasn't ended yet, I don't think it's going to
- 42:06Speaker 17: I think we're okay.
- 42:07Speaker 3: Well it is radio. Keep that in mind, all right. Jenny,
- 42:11Speaker 3: talk about the first time you were on the air
- 42:13Speaker 3: with Steve.
- 42:14Speaker 6: Oh my gosh.
- 42:14Speaker 22: I did not know what to think of him. I
- 42:15Speaker 22: mean it was, you know, just a few years out
- 42:18Speaker 22: of college.
- 42:19Speaker 17: You don't even remember when I do so remember.
- 42:21Speaker 22: So we had Randy Dammren on one station and Steve
- 42:25Speaker 22: on the other side doing his FM show. I was
- 42:29Speaker 22: actually doing news for him when I first started.
- 42:31Speaker 3: So kind of worked.
- 42:32Speaker 6: We were.
- 42:33Speaker 17: We weren't like a team then. That didn't happen till
- 42:36Speaker 17: the late nineties.
- 42:37Speaker 3: Okayat but those idea wasn't to put you together.
- 42:40Speaker 22: Actually, I think Dale Miller, former Presecond Time Company. The
- 42:45Speaker 22: second time, he kind of pulled me aside and he's like, Jenny,
- 42:49Speaker 22: I need you to work with Steve because I think
- 42:51Speaker 22: you're the only one who can handle it.
- 42:54Speaker 3: Wow, welcome to your roast, Steve.
- 42:58Speaker 11: The rest they say is his.
- 42:59Speaker 17: Well, I I didn't well, I remember that, but I
- 43:02Speaker 17: was thinking that we worked. We worked at the country
- 43:04Speaker 17: station together, which is ninety six point one. I came
- 43:08Speaker 17: over and worked at WCHS in the morning for I
- 43:11Speaker 17: don't know, a year or so, and then they needed
- 43:13Speaker 17: somebody over at ninety six, and so I went over there.
- 43:16Speaker 17: I mean, technically I haven't been on V one hundred
- 43:20Speaker 17: all forty five years, but I just it's easier to
- 43:23Speaker 17: say that because I always had an association with the station.
- 43:26Speaker 17: Whether I because I tried twice to go do something else,
- 43:30Speaker 17: not because I hated V one hundred because I didn't.
- 43:32Speaker 17: I just wanted to try something else, so I did,
- 43:35Speaker 17: and then I always ended up back over there.
- 43:37Speaker 3: Have you ever had a career other than radium? Have
- 43:40Speaker 3: you ever done anything else besides redoll?
- 43:42Speaker 17: I was talking about this earlier. I've the time or
- 43:45Speaker 17: two I might have had a normal job. It didn't
- 43:48Speaker 17: last very long because I could never have a normal,
- 43:52Speaker 17: regular job. I just I couldn't.
- 43:54Speaker 3: We're not normal people, No, we aren't.
- 43:58Speaker 17: And it just didn't seem like that was in the
- 44:01Speaker 17: cards for me. It had to be some But I
- 44:03Speaker 17: never honestly thought that my radio career would last. It'll
- 44:08Speaker 17: be fifty years next year.
- 44:10Speaker 3: And you started, as I mean, when you think about
- 44:13Speaker 3: when when you started your career, not necessarily here, but
- 44:16Speaker 3: when you started your career. The differences between now and then,
- 44:19Speaker 3: because again I've not been doing it as long as
- 44:21Speaker 3: you have, but I know the differences between when I
- 44:24Speaker 3: started thirty seven years ago and what it is now.
- 44:27Speaker 3: It's just I mean, there's just computer monitors everywhere, and
- 44:30Speaker 3: now that you've added social media to it, it's a
- 44:32Speaker 3: big part of it.
- 44:33Speaker 17: It's different change, that's for sure. That's for sure. Technology wise,
- 44:38Speaker 17: it's gotten easier because I was famous for putting the
- 44:42Speaker 17: record on the turntable and having at as wrong speed.
- 44:46Speaker 17: That was because once in a while you'd play something
- 44:48Speaker 17: off an album and have to set it on thirty
- 44:50Speaker 17: three and a third, and then I'd forget to put
- 44:53Speaker 17: it back on forty five. I know some of somebody
- 44:56Speaker 17: listening is going like, I don't even know what he's.
- 44:57Speaker 3: Talking I don't have no idea what he's talking about.
- 45:00Speaker 17: Don't have any idea.

- 48:16Speaker 21: Well it's really not that funny, but steveciate it's.
- 48:19Speaker 17: Find it hysterical because it just is so true.
- 48:22Speaker 3: It is so true.
- 48:23Speaker 21: So I started working here at WBrC Media back in
- 48:27Speaker 21: twenty sixteen, and I remember standing up at the front
- 48:30Speaker 21: desk with my back towards the long hallway, and I'm
- 48:32Speaker 21: talking to whoever the receptionists may have been at the time,
- 48:35Speaker 21: and I hear Steve Bishop walking up the hall. Now
- 48:38Speaker 21: he was complaining about something. I don't remember what it was.
- 48:41Speaker 21: I just remember the tone of his voice. And at
- 48:44Speaker 21: the time I had not met Steve, but as many
- 48:48Speaker 21: of us have grown up listening to Steve and Jenny,
- 48:51Speaker 21: in my mind, Steve was iconic, you know, he was
- 48:54Speaker 21: a legend. He was somebody famous that I never thought
- 48:58Speaker 21: i'd have the opportunity to meet. So I'm looking at
- 49:02Speaker 21: the receptionist saying, oh my God, is that Steve Bishop?
- 49:06Speaker 19: Is that?
- 49:07Speaker 21: Is that him walking behind me?
- 49:08Speaker 22: And I was just so enamored.
- 49:10Speaker 21: And then the joke is you fast forward three years later,
- 49:13Speaker 21: Steve would come down to the office to talk to me,
- 49:15Speaker 21: and I'd be like, Oh, hell, Steve, what do you
- 49:17Speaker 21: want to.
- 49:21Speaker 7: Become?
- 49:22Speaker 10: What is it now?
- 49:23Speaker 17: Stee It just became one of her coworkers.
- 49:28Speaker 3: Growing up, you talked about wanting to do radio. Who
- 49:30Speaker 3: are some of the people that you listen to?
- 49:32Speaker 19: Me?
- 49:33Speaker 18: Yeah?
- 49:33Speaker 3: Yeah, that you that there were some of your heroes? Anybody, Well,
- 49:36Speaker 3: I mean I would always you can say Fred Persinger
- 49:40Speaker 3: if you want.
- 49:41Speaker 17: Well, I didn't know Fred till I got here, but
- 49:44Speaker 17: Fred's one of my heroes, that's for sure.
- 49:45Speaker 3: He's one of mine as well.
- 49:47Speaker 17: He's the best. I don't know I was since I
- 49:51Speaker 17: was fascinated with radio. I would I had a little
- 49:53Speaker 17: transistor radio that I stuck under my pillow at night,
- 49:56Speaker 17: and I would tune in w LS in Chicago and
- 50:00Speaker 17: and you know, w NBC in New York and w ABC,
- 50:03Speaker 17: because these were all fifty thousand watt radio stations that
- 50:06Speaker 17: got out over at night all over the country, and
- 50:10Speaker 17: I would listen. You know, it's just again, I was
- 50:13Speaker 17: just fascinated with the whole the whole radio, how it
- 50:17Speaker 17: all worked, and these these guys that I listened to.
- 50:20Speaker 17: I don't know, if I don't know if people now
- 50:22Speaker 17: that are doing this or even have heroes, or if
- 50:27Speaker 17: that's the right term, or well.
- 50:29Speaker 3: The business has just changed. You know this too. Business
- 50:31Speaker 3: has just changed so much that those iconic figures, even
- 50:35Speaker 3: on a local level. I mean, we're pretty damn lucky
- 50:39Speaker 3: in this company, you know which. I have you guys,
- 50:42Speaker 3: to have Woody Woods' Chris Lawrence's, to have Steve Animal here,
- 50:46Speaker 3: to have Rob Real, to have these people, these people
- 50:49Speaker 3: here that people actually know in the community, because it's
- 50:53Speaker 3: not that way everywhere. No, no, it's not.
- 50:55Speaker 17: It's different. It's it's definitely a different ball game now,
- 50:58Speaker 17: that's for sure.
- 50:58Speaker 3: All Right, So how long are you going to continue this?
- 51:00Speaker 3: I keep going, I.
- 51:01Speaker 17: Don't know, it's stopping, is in my head. But when
- 51:07Speaker 17: I don't know and I don't know, it's so another
- 51:13Speaker 17: forty five, I doubt it. I do have a goal
- 51:16Speaker 17: of living to be a hundred, but I don't have
- 51:18Speaker 17: a goal of working till.
- 51:20Speaker 3: I got you. I got you, Genny. Give me one
- 51:22Speaker 3: thing about Steve that maybe people don't know.
- 51:24Speaker 22: He talks on the radio to thousands of people every day,
- 51:28Speaker 22: but he is one of the shyest people.
- 51:30Speaker 3: I've ever met. It's not uncommon.
- 51:32Speaker 9: Right.
- 51:33Speaker 22: We actually went to a company Christmas party and I
- 51:36Speaker 22: was sitting with Rick Johnson and his wife and Steve
- 51:39Speaker 22: called me on myself and he's like, where are you
- 51:41Speaker 22: right now? And I'm like, I'm sitting in here with
- 51:43Speaker 22: Rick and his wife. Would you come out to the
- 51:45Speaker 22: elevator and get me. He didn't want to walk in.
- 51:48Speaker 22: He was so shy even walking into a room with people.
- 51:51Speaker 17: He people I work with and know and every day.
- 51:55Speaker 17: Just why does it become different when you're off the clock.
- 51:59Speaker 17: I don't know. It just was awkward.
