- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Fistful of Dirt, the official podcast of Monte Oak Properties.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Whether you own a small farm, lease land, or just love hanging in your backyard.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: We're all about the outdoor lifestyle and how to get the most from your time in God's great outdoors.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Now here's your host, Ronnie Cuz Strickland.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: It's October.
- 0:27SPEAKER_03: I know when I'm I've already decorated up here.
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I talked about it last week.
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: Your house looks like in some bigger towns, they'll have those Halloween stores where it's like a vacant department store and everything in there is Halloween.
- 0:43SPEAKER_03: It's so fun.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: That's what your house looks like.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: But it's it's it's it's classy.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: It ain't like stuff jumping out at you.
- 0:50SPEAKER_03: No, and it's not gory either.
- 0:52SPEAKER_03: It's like traditional.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: I saw a post the other day.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: This guy, and I felt I said, I am that guy.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: He said, Man, I just came from I forgot where it was, Sam's Club or something like that.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: And he said, Man, they want me to wear my Christmas pajamas, buy a stuffed turkey for Thanksgiving, and put on my Halloween suit.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: It's like everything's out there at one time.
- 1:14SPEAKER_03: I don't like that.
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: Because you can't fully enjoy each season to the fullest because they're trying to cram the next one down your throat.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, get Halloween out of the way first.
- 1:23SPEAKER_03: Like, let me eat some candy corn.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and uh, but man, your house is ready.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: I'm sure you're not gonna share that video, but she's got a video of her house.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: I'm like, that is cool.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: And it's tasteful.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: It's fun.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's not it ain't like red jello with a gold a bony hand coming out of it and stuff like that.
- 1:42SPEAKER_03: It's just like black scaredy cats and jack-o'-lanterns and tons of candles and orange, and it's just it's how I remember people decorating for Halloween when I was little.
- 1:53SPEAKER_03: Like just fun.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm not gonna ask you for an update on the Halloween episode.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: We're still two or three weeks away from that, but it's gonna be a good one.
- 2:04SPEAKER_03: It may be my favorite one we've done.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: It's always the about the biggest downloaded podcast we do, and everybody's ready for the fall.
- 2:13SPEAKER_03: Like back in the day, if you were if you followed some sitcom, Roseanne or Designing Women, they all did Halloween episodes.
- 2:23SPEAKER_03: And those were always my favorite episodes of the whole run, was when they would wear costumes and have, you know, contests and all that.
- 2:32SPEAKER_03: And there's not a lot of I listen to a ton of podcasts, and there aren't many that'll do, you know, Halloween episode or Christmas episode.
- 2:41SPEAKER_03: They just kind of do their own thing.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: You know how many podcasts they are in the United States right now?
- 2:47SPEAKER_03: Total?
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:48SPEAKER_03: Like mil over three or four million.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: Five point four million.
- 2:53SPEAKER_03: Jeez.
- 2:56SPEAKER_03: It's saturated.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's why we appreciate our listener.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: I'm like, oh what there's a podcast for anything.
- 3:04SPEAKER_03: Y'all got a lot to choose from, and we appreciate you being here.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: I mean, you you can find a podcast on anything, and uh we uh we try to be relevant and try to be informative and all that, but you know, it's it if you got a topic, I don't care what it is, I'm getting crowns put on my teeth.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: There's a podcast for it.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: It doesn't matter.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm gonna uh raise my truck, I'm gonna lower my truck, or I'm gonna tilt my truck.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: There is a podcast out there for everything.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: And sometimes I think, man, we we need to do more research or something.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: But it's like, well, whatever our genre is, we're we're doing pretty good.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: I've read a thing.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: If you can, I forgot how many, we get way more downloads, but it is like gave you a number.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: If you get that many downloads, you're in the top 1%.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: We get way more than that.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: And uh I guess just cause we keep it real.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: And uh so it is what it is.
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: We know our audience real well too.
- 4:01SPEAKER_03: Like we've listened to feedback and you can see which episodes outperform the others, and and we're pretty good about all right, that one didn't do so hot.
- 4:10SPEAKER_03: Let's stick to this, this, and this.
- 4:11SPEAKER_03: We stay in our lane.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: How how do you not know who your customer is?
- 4:16SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: I mean, you know, uh Bud Light, Tractor Supply.
- 4:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Target.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: I mean, how do you not know who your customer is?
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: Who have you hired to come?
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: I mean, you won't know who your customer is at tractor supply.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: I'm there all the time.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: If you're the CEO, go park in the parking lot for an hour.
- 4:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: You're gonna see who your customer is.
- 4:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: Good grief.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: Holy cow.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: Go woke go broke.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: Anyway, I told you I I don't know if we have a topic for this, but there's a couple of things I want to address.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: I don't know if it's gonna be long enough for a podcast.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: I gotta give kind of my rundown of the foxhole shootout.
- 4:57SPEAKER_03: Oh, that's right.
- 4:58SPEAKER_03: We hadn't really talked about that.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that that was uh Thursday before last or last Thursday, depending on when this airs.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: And it's a one-day event, and what they pull off in one day to me is astounding and amazing.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: Because I went out to the uh Moss Hill golf course the day before on a Wednesday because I hadn't seen it.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: They've redone it, just opened it back up.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: It's phenomenal.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: It is immaculate.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: Now it was hot, and uh we didn't have the 90-degree rule.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: I could drive out to my golf ball, thank goodness.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: But and there was nothing out there.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: You wouldn't know anything's fixing to happen.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: There wasn't that many people.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: But as the afternoon went on, activity picked up.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: And by the time I left from out there at 4:30 or 5 o'clock, it was uh it looked like looking at an ant farm.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: There was people going everywhere.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: And Thursday morning, it was ready.
- 5:51SPEAKER_03: It was there.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: Tents up, registration, sponsors on the holes, all the contests ready.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: The Sunday golf guys, they had all these golf bags on the practice putting the green.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, it was just like they did it at nine or something.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: But it and you can't imagine how much work that is.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: It's crazy.
- 6:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: Biggest crowd ever, I think.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: I think there were 600 total golfers.
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: I don't know how many teams that is.
- 6:16SPEAKER_03: That's a lot.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: That's playing, you know, morning tea times and afternoon tea times, two teams per hole, Old Waverly and the Mossy Oak golf course.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: Some stud golfers in there.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: And uh it's uh I played on the Mossy Oak properties Tennessee land and farm.
- 6:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 6:37SPEAKER_03: Jamie Spencer.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: Jamie Spencer.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: Every time I make a comment on his post, I say, I want to be Jamie Spencer when I grow up.
- 6:44SPEAKER_03: What a happy guy.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: He lives life to the fullest.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: He brought uh a couple of guys with him, Wells and Davis, younger boys, and he told me, he said, now, man, if we ever had a chance to win a plaque, this is gonna be it.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: These guys are good.
- 7:00SPEAKER_02: Uh-huh.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: And uh, man, were they ever.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: Oh my.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: We uh birdied every hole.
- 7:08SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: But two.
- 7:10SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: And we eagled a par five.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: So I don't remember.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: We had to be either 16 or 17 under, and we didn't even sniff.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: Golfers are so good now.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: And yeah, and it was just a fun day.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: We're just watching them play, and uh it was uh, I mean, it's humbling a little bit when you've been playing golf your whole life to see a flat bellied kid hit one.
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: Uh Wells, I can't remember what Wells' last name is.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: He won the long drive contest and he didn't even know the hole was a long drive hole.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: He had a it was number one, and that we we that was one of our last holes.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: He had he had a drive 333 yards.
- 7:54SPEAKER_03: Whoa.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: And when we got down there, his was way down there.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: And Davis, the other young guy, he had they put a sign out there when you hit your drive.
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: If this is long, you stick this sign in the ground, write your name on it.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: Both of them were further than the one that was already there.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: And we were one of the last themes too, but 333 yards.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: Man, I'd have to hit it twice to get it there.
- 8:18SPEAKER_03: I think most people would, at least.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: Well, you just gotta come to terms with stuff like that.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: And know your strengths.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and you know, I I knew why I was there.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: I mean, you know, Jamie and I go way back.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: I was the first guy on his podcast.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: He's got a podcast called Tennessee Dirt, and they do real good with it.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: I think Dave is is on there with him too.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: I didn't know Davis was that kind of golf, but boy, they were good.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: And uh so if they buy and I one reason they had me on there is I can move up to the senior tees.
- 8:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: The white tees.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: And on some holes, that's cool.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: Somehow if the if the senior white tee is like 40 or 50 yards in front of the other tea box, yeah, I'd run up there and hit first.
- 9:01SPEAKER_01: Just so they know we got one in the fairway.
- 9:03SPEAKER_02: Uh-huh.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: But if it was close, I'd say, hey, y'all wrap it.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: Just grip it and rip it.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: And uh that's just part of playing senior golf.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: But man, they hit it good and putting good.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: We had a blast.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: And uh, man, those sponsors out there.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: I went back and I only played on the Mall Shield course.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: I didn't make it over to Old Wavy.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: I don't know who the sponsors were over there.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: Everybody's got a tent, you know, and uh Mississippi Land Bank, NWTF, Newcomb Blinds, though though they were there the whole time.
- 9:33SPEAKER_03: Cool.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: And uh in that just blistering heat.
- 9:38SPEAKER_03: It was all hot.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, with no wind, but it's uh it's a special thing.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: And see people coming like together like that is for me is humbling.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: Of course, it it uh ends at Saturda uh Thursday night after the golf and all that, they have the the banquet.
- 9:55SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: Which is all about the food.
- 9:57unknown: Yeah.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: And uh I didn't get to see any of the chefs.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: I got there a little bit late, but it was unbelievably packed.
- 10:06SPEAKER_03: That's a good thing.
- 10:07SPEAKER_01: You literally couldn't move around.
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: Silent auction, they had live auction.
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: Our man Dwight Jones was there, clearly the best auctioneer in the United States.
- 10:18SPEAKER_03: Ever.
- 10:19SPEAKER_03: He's so entertaining.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: He is he's unbelievable and he's so good.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: Now he's he's playing golf too.
- 10:26SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 10:26SPEAKER_03: I saw some of the pictures, I was like, wait, was he golfing too?
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: No, he was working in the Ducks Unlimited booth.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: Mississippi Ducks Unlimited, I guess there.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: They had a booth there, and I stopped and took some pictures with them and all that.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: But man, you talk about the consummate professional.
- 10:42SPEAKER_03: He's been on the podcast too.
- 10:43SPEAKER_03: You ought to go listen to that episode.
- 10:45SPEAKER_03: It's a good one if you missed it.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: How to be an auctioneer.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: I was stunned to believe that to find out he actually went to an auctioneer school.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: I said, I didn't know they had a school for that.
- 10:53SPEAKER_03: That's so much more than what you can learn in a school, though.
- 10:56SPEAKER_03: That's so much charisma and just being quick.
- 11:00SPEAKER_03: Man, you gotta be quick.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: He's the best.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: I think there was 11 or 12 live auction things.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: I didn't even make it all the way then, but there was tons of science and the tons of silent auction items, and the work that goes into that's unbelievable.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: And all that money, that money goes to St.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: Jude's Children's Hospital, the Catch Your Dream Foundation, and we peel off some of there for Seoul, sportsman organized for law enforcement.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: And uh, I don't know if I talked about it, but the Seoul thing was started here at Mossy Oak and it's it's still pretty new.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: Hadn't had a time, a lot of time to work on it, but we did make a contribution to the Houston, Mississippi Police Department.
- 11:43SPEAKER_03: We sure did pretty recently.
- 11:44SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: That's like a month ago.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: I made a couple of posts about it, but they got some body armor, didn't have any, and we got eight different sets of it up there, and I was like to to go there and watch that and watch Ryan Smith, you know, give him the check to purchase that stuff, that that hit home.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: So that that's a pretty good deal.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: And just everything about the Foxhole shootout special, all those people donating their time and all that.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: But let me tell you what a big deal was out there was Bill Dance.
- 12:13SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: Bill Dance was there and he had his daughter and his niece with him.
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: He's 85 years old.
- 12:21SPEAKER_03: I didn't realize he was that old.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: Dwight Jones, who's done more, you know, Ducks Unlimited, NWTF, auctions and all that, he was more excited to meet Bill Dance.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: He couldn't even concentrate.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: And I I've met him a couple of times.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: So as soon as I got there, before it got way crowded, I went over and talked to Bill Dance.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: I said, and I was telling him about Dwight, and I said, Look, I know you hear this all the time.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: He's he's like your biggest fan.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: He said, Go get him.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: And I brought him over and they visited for about five or ten minutes.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: But it goes back to uh I told that Kevin Van Damme story on here, I think, a week or two ago about being the goat, and I was like, that's why Bill Dance is legendary.
- 13:05SPEAKER_03: He said, Go get him.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: Go get him, bring him over here.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: And he was like that with everybody.
- 13:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: And the line never stopped to go sit down.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: He, and of course, he's 85 years old, he wanted to sit down.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: So he had a chair on either side, and two people came, he was in the middle, uh-huh, and they took pictures and talked.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: I don't know how many people, hundreds.
- 13:28SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: And like I say, he had his daughter and his niece with him, and they were kind of looking out for him.
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: It's a big crowd, and you know, it was very hot.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: And I finally told him, I said, hey, let me sit with him and y'all go fix you a plate.
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: Oh, oh, that would be awesome.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: So they wouldn't fix him a plate of food, and I sat there with him and and kind of helped arrange photos and stuff like that.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: And it never stopped.
- 13:50SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: And that's just the power of television and DVDs.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: If we had a dollar for every time somebody watched the Bill Dance bloopers tape.
- 13:59SPEAKER_03: Oh, wow.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: And uh just as nice, and he auctioned off a catfishing trip with him.
- 14:07SPEAKER_01: And I heard somebody say, somebody asked, uh, I was sitting by started bidding on that one.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: And this guy said, dude, it's catfish.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: He said, I don't care if it's Grinnell and Gar.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: It's with Bill Dance, and that guy was throwing that hand up, you know.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: I think he finally got put out, you know, it got a little bit too rich for his blood.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: But I'm like, how cool was that of Bill Dance to come and donate his time, bring all that stuff down, and just to raise money for St.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: Jude and Catch a Dream and all that?
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: It's just crazy.
- 14:37SPEAKER_03: Love to see that though.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: He uh, you know, and I got to thinking there's a lot of young people there.
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: You know, Macy Watkins and Maggie.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: Oh, you know, they're all Maggie Williams.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: Maggie Williams, they're there.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: And uh they do such a good job on social media, and I was reading some.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: And let me tell you who's getting bombarded on social media with negative stuff is baby boomers.
- 15:01SPEAKER_03: Oh, I know.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: And it's like and I'll re and look, I don't get caught up in people trying to, you know, trigger me.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: I don't get triggered unless I see a snake, then I get real triggered.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: But anyway, it's like I I'm really confused on that.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: Because if somebody really young came up to Bill, I'm just using Bill Dance as an example, because I was sitting there.
- 15:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: And if it was a young person, come here and sit down by me and talk to me.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: Now, and if they got a question in, it was a miracle.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: What do you do?
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: Why are you here?
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: Who are you with?
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it just went on and on.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: He spent the most time with those young people.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: And I was thinking while I was w watching him do that from the heart, you know, instead of, you know, throwing daggers and stuff out there when you see an old person who's done well, you should be asking them questions.
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: How'd you get started?
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: What'd you do?
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: And all that.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: And if they, you know, sometimes they'll throw, well, it was easier when you were doing what no it wasn't.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: And yeah, it wasn't even easier.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: Either you got that or you don't.
- 16:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: And uh it's like ask them, you know, like the kid asked me one time, what was your big break when he I was signing hats at the NWTF and he had just finished second in the contest and he was all snarled, well, just what was your big break?
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: And I s and I told him, I said, I think it was a consecutive string of seven-day work weeks I put in at Rex Sporting Goods, cleaning the toilets and rigging bowls and asking.
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: And he didn't want to hear that, so he walked off.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: But there's no telling what Bill Dance went through to get to where he got to.
- 16:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: The hours on the road, all that kind of stuff, Hank Parker, all those people.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: And it's like, you probably should pick their brain.
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: In my opinion, instead of throwing something, ask them and uh don't assume anything.
- 16:53SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: I heard one say the other day that uh baby boomers, they were uh extremely greedy and didn't have anything to do with their grandkids, and I'm like, I don't know if I ever met one like that.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: And I don't get out as much as I used to, and I I kind of look but I I hadn't met any baby boomers that ain't crazy about their grandkids myself, but I just see you and ya, and I'm like, can't relate.
- 17:20SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry.
- 17:21SPEAKER_03: I know it probably exists, but I don't know.
- 17:23SPEAKER_03: I also think too w in the South in Mississippi, you're kind of in a bubble.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:29SPEAKER_03: For real.
- 17:30SPEAKER_03: A good bubble.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, you know, judging people, you know, before you even meet a night, that's not a good thing.
- 17:37SPEAKER_02: No.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: And uh, but anyway, I was like, some of the most friendly people I know are and I don't even know what the I don't know what the the dates.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't know what the dates are for a baby.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: I think if you were born between I don't know, 50 and 64 or five, something like that.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: Does that sound right?
- 17:57SPEAKER_03: That sounds right, I think so.
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: And uh some of the best people I know are are in that age group.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: But anyway, I was amazed watching Bill dance, and I'm just telling you though, the younger the person was, the more time he spent with them.
- 18:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: And the the young people were spending time with them, good good for them.
- 18:18SPEAKER_03: Good for them for for realizing the treasure that they had available to them.
- 18:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: And uh that that was inspiring.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: I don't know how much money was raised, and we don't know that.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: They'll tell us that in a month or two, whatever it is, but holy cow, what a big deal, the foxhole shootout.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: I like I say, I I'm I'm getting better at coming to terms with I I don't play golf that good anymore.
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: I really come to terms with it watching them two Wells and Davis with their name just crushing it.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: But everybody, you know, all them young people have gotten so good now.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: But uh I didn't have any anxiety, I don't mind hitting in front of people and all that.
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: That's something else I want to talk about because I got a comment.
- 19:00SPEAKER_01: I don't know what, and I didn't make a reaction, I didn't answer.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: But anyway, I and this was uh a month or so ago.
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: I threw up a little video about getting started with my bow.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: And I, you know, I shot a couple errors and I had some quick cuts in there.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: It's like getting time.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: It's just a harmless little video.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: I very seldom put my face up on social media, I'm not there for that.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: None of my stuff's monetized, but anyway, it's a good little post, and everybody's like, Yeah, cuz you can still pull your bow back.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: And um I got home, I guess it was from the foxhole, it could have been the next night.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: Anyway, you get notified when you get comments.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: And that thing was a month old, but anyway, I got a comment on it and I looked at it, and some and I looked at it, it was a young person said, Those arrows are awful long.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: And I was like, my first thought was is dude, you do not know me.
- 19:58SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: You know, my arrow was hanging off probably four inches past the rest.
- 20:03SPEAKER_01: And I wanted to go in and answer them and say, you know what?
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: I got a wall in my shop that's probably got a thousand arrows in it.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: And I've sh I know I've practiced and shoot through paper, I do all that kind of stuff.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: And that air length through that bow shot so much better, and it added a few grains, and I wanted a little bit heavier air.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: I I did that on purpose, but instead of explaining to that comment, those errors are a little long.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: You know it's like, dude, relax.
- 20:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: But bow hunting has turned into just this unbelievable thing, and I'm sure it's because of social media and and it's not different.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's not the same as it was when I was coming up, and I get that.
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: There's information everywhere, there's information that overloads and it it made me want to just talk about it.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: And I'm not gonna respond to the guy and say, dude, I've shot 90 arrows out of that thing to see which one was the best.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: That was the one.
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: Better penetration, flu better.
- 21:11SPEAKER_01: You don't have to have it cut off even with your drop away rest, which I don't use.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: I still got a whisker biscuit on mine.
- 21:19SPEAKER_01: That's another thing that'll get all kinds of comments started.
- 21:23SPEAKER_01: But I was like, you know what?
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: You you folks need to relax.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: It's not a competition.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: You you can go the people that are just like really well known.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: And I'm not really good friends with any of 'em.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: But I go watch 'em.
- 21:41SPEAKER_01: And the reason I go watch people like uh Levi Morgan, Spook Span, Cameron Haynes, any of those people is because if you watch it long enough, you're gonna get something.
- 21:54SPEAKER_03: You'll learn something.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: You're gonna find a nugget 'cause they're gonna spill it to you.
- 21:58SPEAKER_03: Good or bad.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: That didn't work.
- 22:01SPEAKER_03: This did.
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: It's like you you probably ain't gonna make it to their level.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: Just listen to them and be thankful they're offering that information.
- 22:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: Because what they do, and I just picked out three, there's probably thirty-three, Tim Wells, all those people.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: They're phenomenal.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: They're killers.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: They're dedicated.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: They their whole life revolves around this stuff.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: And if somebody's that passionate about it, just be be thankful you you're able to keep up with them.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: And you even heard of them.
- 22:33SPEAKER_03: It's like they're flexing on the wrong things.
- 22:36SPEAKER_03: Because shouldn't the ultimate flex be I got so good and I got so in tune with my gear and I tweaked everything that it was a perfect experience for that animal.
- 22:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 22:48SPEAKER_03: You know, it was quick, it was humane.
- 22:50SPEAKER_03: That's that's the flex.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: You you hadn't gotta be as good with a bow as Levi Morgan.
- 22:58SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: You don't have to be as good at figuring out a giant whitetail as Spook Span, and you don't have to be as in good a shape as Cameron Haynes to have fun.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: It is not a competition, it's a journey.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: And the only way your journey can be good is if you make mistakes and all that.
- 23:18SPEAKER_01: But golly, that you're talking about an information free-flow highway.
- 23:23SPEAKER_03: You got it.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: You don't you don't have to throw shade on people.
- 23:27SPEAKER_01: Just if you if you watch them long enough, man, there's some good tips in there.
- 23:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:32SPEAKER_01: And uh I'm just I'm, you know, am I trying to kill a 200-inch deer?
- 23:37SPEAKER_01: No.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: Uh, but am I still interested in it?
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:41SPEAKER_01: You know, it's kind of like the old guys at the Pro Shop.
- 23:43SPEAKER_01: They're sitting up there under the cabana in the shade, sipping on a cold beer, watching them flat bellies hit them 300 yards and having a blast.
- 23:51SPEAKER_03: Loving it.
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: You know, old timer builds knives with durability in mind.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: They also want it to be a tool that is comfortable enough to work with day after day.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: Since the beginning, old timer has made knives for those who don't rely on others to get the job done.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: Old timer built for generations.
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: You know, there's nothing I love more than teaching my grandkids how to be better woodsmen.
- 24:26SPEAKER_01: The Onex app helps me do that in a way that makes sense to them.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: They're all about apps and that phone.
- 24:33SPEAKER_01: Using Onex to set optimal wind on stands that should or shouldn't be hunted on certain winds makes it easy for them to understand that, hey, a north wind blows from the north, not to the north.
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: Using that little slope angle layer when teaching them how to read topographical maps, but the color codec shading makes it a lot easier to explain to them what tightly stacked topo lines mean.
- 25:00SPEAKER_01: Bottom line, Onex Hunt makes learning fun for those young ones and still helps me find success in the field.
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: It's an easy-to-use platform.
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: Hey, even I can do it.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: I suggest it for any age outdoorsman.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: You're listening to Fist Full of Dirt with Cut Strickland.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: Presented by Mossy Oak Properties.
- 25:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I feel like sometimes people miss the whole point, especially about Bohunt.
- 25:33SPEAKER_01: Bohunting's a little different, everything else, and that's all good.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: I swear, you know, it somebody sent me a shirt the other day said, it's all it's all good, just hunt.
- 25:43SPEAKER_03: I love that.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: It's all good.
- 25:45SPEAKER_03: I hope they sell a million of them.
- 25:47SPEAKER_01: Well, no, they just made one up and sent it to me.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: But it's like, and that was that's probably gonna be the theme I talk about at the NWTF, but it's like uh envy's just a terrible thing.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: And it's like just you know, set your stuff up for what you do.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: And I've said from the get-go, I set up my archery stuff for 20 yards at the farm.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: I'm you know, I'm a close-in guy.
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I went out west and you know, I shot an I uh one of the second elk, I think, something might have been the first one I shot when uh I was with Shed and whoever, 52 yards, and that was like a mile.
- 26:25SPEAKER_01: Now that's a chip shot for most people back then.
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: I worked forever to get where I could shoot 50 yards.
- 26:30SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 26:31SPEAKER_01: Shot it with a muzzy right there and and thought I'd missed it.
- 26:34SPEAKER_01: It went through so it's like set up for what you do.
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: Now mine's like I'm ambushing them at 20 yards, that's all I need.
- 26:41SPEAKER_01: I want to be able to pull my bow back while I'm sitting.
- 26:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, it's just I I remember I was out west one time, and this is hadn't been that long ago.
- 26:51SPEAKER_01: And uh Hunter McCool was with me.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: We were making some we were elk hunting.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: I'll give you any details, but anyway, I was out there and there was five or six other bow hunters out there, and I was shooting my bow, whatever it was, and I had a zero peep sight.
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: And if for the people that don't know, that's a peep sight that has a black rubber holes on it, you tie to your string, and when you pull your peep sight, your string back, it aligns up perfect every time.
- 27:17SPEAKER_01: That used to be just like putting a broad hit on you, everybody used one, or people don't use them no more.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: And anyway, I was suiting that thing, and this this one dude just made fun of it.
- 27:29SPEAKER_01: He's like, you know, because it was a big camp and it was you know, all these special, and I was like, yeah, it works good for me.
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: And uh didn't say anything, but anyway, I I shot an elk second afternoon or second morning or something like that.
- 27:44SPEAKER_01: That you know, it was a good elk too, ran out there 80, 90 yards, tipped over.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: And I was like, Well, you know, my zero peep and this dude like shot one a mule deer way off, and they had to go back and went back the next day and all that, and and Hunter said, Man, you ought to ask him if he wants to use your zero peep cycle.
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: Like it it it it matters not.
- 28:09SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: It don't matter.
- 28:11SPEAKER_01: FOC.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: You hear all the arguments about you know, all the weight being in the front, it's gotta be that heavy.
- 28:17SPEAKER_01: And or it's gotta be uh uh you know, this kind of broad head, this mechanical broad head, all that kind of it doesn't it doesn't matter, just practice with it and get good with it.
- 28:28SPEAKER_03: And uh You can't tell me it's a it's a a one size fits all situation because you think about right-handed, left-handed, eye dominance, people's physical abilities.
- 28:43SPEAKER_03: Like it's one of the most personalized things.
- 28:46SPEAKER_03: I don't know how you could sit there and slam on anything anybody's got rigged up on their bow.
- 28:52SPEAKER_01: Well, you probably wouldn't do it if you was face to face, but you know, it it it it that's what the social media especially, but it's like, look, I'm gonna tell you something right now, I don't care who you follow, who you are, what you do, you you're not the best.
- 29:06SPEAKER_03: I doubt it.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: I say that on turkey hunting all the time.
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: I said, you're never gonna know who the best turkey hunter on the planet is.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: And you may think it's Dave Owens, you may think it's this guy, so whoever, you ain't gonna know who it is because he ain't talking and you ain't gonna meet him.
- 29:20SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: It's like now how many people did we introduce Dr.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: Warren Strickland to who had never heard of him because he don't do social media, and this dude's got the super slam with a bow in there, all the sheep, all the and just kind of did it on his own quietly, because that's what he loves.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: Trust me, you're not the best out there.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: There's there's plenty of those people out there.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: The point I'm trying to make is and I've probably told every story I can.
- 29:53SPEAKER_01: When I started talking about bow hunting, I got I probably have more memories about bow hunting than I do turkey hunting.
- 29:59SPEAKER_01: And I talk about the stories all the time from out west when I went with my buddies.
- 30:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: We didn't have a clue what was going on.
- 30:09SPEAKER_01: You're talking about a bunch of pilgrims.
- 30:11SPEAKER_01: Nobody knew what was going on.
- 30:13SPEAKER_01: We pulled some money literally in a jar, went out there and did our thing, and every every great bow hunting story I got came, and we did it three or four years, and nobody ever killed anything.
- 30:26SPEAKER_01: I think Gary Poor killed one mule deer.
- 30:29SPEAKER_01: Nobody killed nothing.
- 30:31SPEAKER_03: The whole time.
- 30:31SPEAKER_01: Nothing.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: I mean, didn't sniff nothing.
- 30:35SPEAKER_03: You know what?
- 30:35SPEAKER_03: It has never dawned on me.
- 30:37SPEAKER_03: I've seen all the group pictures on the sides of mountains and the tents and the trucks and like all that.
- 30:43SPEAKER_03: I don't remember a single hero picture with an animal in it from that.
- 30:48SPEAKER_01: Good reason for that.
- 30:49SPEAKER_03: There wasn't any.
- 30:51SPEAKER_03: I never thought about that.
- 30:52SPEAKER_01: Not not a single one.
- 30:54SPEAKER_03: There were so many stories that came back.
- 30:56SPEAKER_03: I never thought to say, Well, you didn't get anything.
- 31:00SPEAKER_03: Like it just didn't dawn on me.
- 31:01SPEAKER_03: You seemed like you had so much fun.
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: Oh, it was crazy.
- 31:04SPEAKER_01: You know, the uh the the memories from that, like it was uh we were camping in Umcompadre National Forest in Colorado.
- 31:17SPEAKER_01: Terrell Foster, me, Little Bull, Boyd, Boyd White, Bubba, all in from you know everybody's from Mississippi.
- 31:24SPEAKER_01: We had our camp.
- 31:24SPEAKER_01: We'd been there three or four days, and we rolled up in there and we cooked one night, and the game wardens pulled up.
- 31:30SPEAKER_01: And somebody had told them these Mississippi boys were out there and they were out there looking for pods and nectarine, you know, because it was legal at the time in Mississippi.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: And they tore our camp apart looking for poison pods.
- 31:44SPEAKER_01: You put it behind your broad contraband.
- 31:46SPEAKER_03: Contraband, yeah, which was everybody used it in Mississippi.
- 31:50SPEAKER_01: We didn't, I mean, I went forever thinking you couldn't kill a deer with a broadhead, but uh it was like everybody tells that story and about Terrell getting lost.
- 32:01SPEAKER_03: It's like left at the gas station.
- 32:04SPEAKER_01: Oh man.
- 32:05SPEAKER_01: Left him at the gas station in his underwear.
- 32:07SPEAKER_03: Hot dogs in the sleeping bag.
- 32:09SPEAKER_01: Oh, it just it just goes on and on and on.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: And the only reason we were out there is because we were seeing people write about it.
- 32:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:18SPEAKER_01: Back then it was all magazines, we didn't have social media and all that kind of stuff.
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: You'd see it in Bo Hunter magazine.
- 32:24SPEAKER_01: There's M.
- 32:25SPEAKER_01: R.
- 32:25SPEAKER_01: James and Dwight Shue and uh Chuck Adams and all these people.
- 32:30SPEAKER_01: Man, we're gonna go do that.
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: We're gonna wipe them out.
- 32:32SPEAKER_01: And you get out there out of yellow, and it's like, holy cow, you know, it's like it you couldn't breathe, you couldn't walk.
- 32:40SPEAKER_03: That's my nose bleed.
- 32:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, first night my nose bled so much I thought I'd had a stroke.
- 32:44SPEAKER_01: I was like, I need to go to the hospital.
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: You know, it's just altitude sickness, but it's like yeah, it's just, you know, whatever you the the best stories ever, just for me, very seldom have to do recruiters.
- 32:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I kill some nice deer and I've killed four elk, four or five, through two of them on public land with a bow.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: I've done all that stuff, but it, you know, it's like who who's gonna remember that stuff?
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: It nobody remembers that.
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: I mean, one one at my house, once the elk meat's gone, nobody even looks up at that antler and says, Man, I wish, you know, that was a great hunt.
- 33:23SPEAKER_01: It's like, do we have any more elk meat?
- 33:25SPEAKER_01: No, we don't have no more elk meat.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: It's gone.
- 33:28SPEAKER_01: It's like it's not it's not a competition.
- 33:33SPEAKER_01: It is a uh, and it's not a race.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: And uh, and there's plenty of people out there that get it, but and maybe I'm like that because I'm older and I've met some guys back in the day.
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: You know, just like I just I just mentioned Dr.
- 33:45SPEAKER_01: Warren Strickland.
- 33:47SPEAKER_01: Clearly one of the best boat hunters on the planet.
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: He just sent me a picture day for yesterday of another Roosevelt elk he killed this week.
- 33:55SPEAKER_03: Oh, wow.
- 33:56SPEAKER_01: It was a monster.
- 33:57unknown: Wow.
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: And he said, six and a half days, hardest hunt I ever been on.
- 34:02SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 34:02SPEAKER_01: Well, he just sent the picture to me.
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: You know, he wouldn't want me to post it or none of that kind of stuff.
- 34:09SPEAKER_01: And I think about when I think about stuff like that, and I was like, and I want to tell people, hey, relax.
- 34:15SPEAKER_01: You're you're not the best bowl hunter out there.
- 34:17SPEAKER_01: I think about Jerry Simmons.
- 34:18SPEAKER_01: Now, a lot of people ain't gonna know who Jerry Simmons is.
- 34:22SPEAKER_01: Jerry Simmons was from uh Alabama, Jasper, Alabama, and he was the guy who in invented or whatever the 200 grain broad head.
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: And uh it was uh golly, I can't think of the name of it now.
- 34:39SPEAKER_01: The interceptor.
- 34:40SPEAKER_03: The interceptor.
- 34:41SPEAKER_03: I've heard you say that before.
- 34:42SPEAKER_01: Oh, I still got some.
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: Matter of fact, when I went to interview Dr.
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: Warren Strickland, I took him one of the original.
- 34:48SPEAKER_01: I had six or seven original 200 grain interceptor broadheads.
- 34:53SPEAKER_03: Wow, how cool.
- 34:54SPEAKER_01: And uh anyway, Jerry Simmons, he had a little bitty ad and uh some magazine.
- 35:01SPEAKER_01: It was like three inches by three inches square in the back, talking about that broadhead.
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: And I got the and I was into it back then, trust me, big time.
- 35:10SPEAKER_01: Five-inch feathers, finger tab, you know, 2216 luminaries and all that kind of stuff.
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: So anyway, I had a phone number and I called him.
- 35:19SPEAKER_01: He answered the phone.
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: I was just gonna ask him how much it didn't have a price.
- 35:24SPEAKER_01: And he started telling me about the broadheads and how he forges them and all that kind of stuff.
- 35:29SPEAKER_01: He made the comment, he said, he figured out who I was and all that.
- 35:34SPEAKER_01: He said, cuz I said, are they are they really that good?
- 35:37SPEAKER_01: He said, cuz.
- 35:38SPEAKER_01: He said, I could kill a Volkswagen doing 50 if I could hit it.
- 35:44SPEAKER_01: And I was like, what a cool dude.
- 35:45SPEAKER_01: Anyway, I ended up making friends with Jerry Simmons, and and I learned early on back in the day doing PR and all that kind of stuff, that when you're around outdoor riders, what they need is story material.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: Some people in back in the day would invite them and say, hey, you go with me today and I'll take you tomorrow.
- 36:03SPEAKER_01: No, I had a camp full of folks, and I took Jerry Simmons on one of those bow hunting rider hunts.
- 36:08SPEAKER_01: I don't remember who all the riders were there, but he was one of the guests.
- 36:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: And uh he was a big guy.
- 36:14SPEAKER_01: He was like six four, he reminded me of Alan Brown, he's like six four, six five strong.
- 36:20SPEAKER_01: And he did shoot a compound bow, but didn't have any sights on it.
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: And he fletched his own airs, had those interceptors, and uh we went hunting.
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: I don't remember where it was, it might have been with Fred Law, but I know it was hot.
- 36:34SPEAKER_01: It was early October.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: Nobody seeing any deers, 90-something degrees.
- 36:38SPEAKER_01: So we decided to make a drive.
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: You know, not really a drive.
- 36:42SPEAKER_01: I don't even know if it was legal.
- 36:43SPEAKER_01: If it is, the statute limitations are gone.
- 36:46SPEAKER_01: But we uh lined off this big long shady bottom and put a guy on this, you know, every hundred yards with this ridge.
- 36:54SPEAKER_01: It was a really good setup.
- 36:57SPEAKER_01: And Jerry got, I don't know, probably down on the end, because we put the riders where we thought we're gonna walk through the this cutover and try to run funnel deer down and and we moved some deer.
- 37:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:09SPEAKER_01: And uh, of course this bow hunting.
- 37:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:12SPEAKER_01: Deer moving.
- 37:13SPEAKER_01: We're thinking we're gonna go real slow, maybe they'll tip down through there.
- 37:17SPEAKER_01: I got down to where Jerry was and I said, You see any?
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: He said, Yeah.
- 37:21SPEAKER_01: And I looked at his quiver on his bow.
- 37:24SPEAKER_01: I think he had a big old, I don't remember what kind of bow it was, giant bow with round wheels.
- 37:30SPEAKER_01: And he had one quiver in his air, and one air in his quiver, and it was covered in blood.
- 37:36SPEAKER_01: And uh he said, I shot one, I think it fell right over there.
- 37:39SPEAKER_01: We went over and got it, doing our stuff, you know, and everybody's kind of, and he said, uh, there should be another one over here by this cane thicket.
- 37:47SPEAKER_01: What?
- 37:47SPEAKER_01: So we start walking over that way, blood everywhere, and pull that out, and we get that, and now we've drug it over with a second one.
- 37:55SPEAKER_01: I'm sitting down and took my shirt off and all that, and he said, Now that last one, he said, I think it's in the creek.
- 38:03SPEAKER_01: Three.
- 38:04SPEAKER_03: Oh my goodness.
- 38:06SPEAKER_01: Three with a bow and arrow and uh moving.
- 38:10SPEAKER_01: And it was like Wow.
- 38:12SPEAKER_01: And it's like, you know, you you get around people like that who are just killers, and you go, Well, I'm just glad I got to know him.
- 38:20SPEAKER_01: I got to know who he is.
- 38:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: That's why you gotta accept people who are just ultra successful and keep doing it over and over and over again.
- 38:29SPEAKER_01: They don't do it because they have a big following, they do it because they're committed to it and they did it.
- 38:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 38:36SPEAKER_03: They do it because they have to.
- 38:38SPEAKER_03: Those people with that personality, they do that kind of stuff and they succeed because they have to.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: You sound like time kelling.
- 38:45SPEAKER_01: I don't hunt turkeys cause I want to, I hunt them because I have to.
- 38:49SPEAKER_01: But all that stuff's gotta be, like I say, it's a journey.
- 38:53SPEAKER_01: And making mistakes, doing stuff the right way, doing stuff the wrong way, getting your nose bloody.
- 38:59SPEAKER_01: And uh you know, it's it's just about having stories.
- 39:02SPEAKER_01: I read something the other day that that kind of excited me a little bit, and it could have been wrong, because you never know what's fake news nowadays.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: But it was a pretty entail article about how young people, and I don't remember the age gap, twenty-three and under, maybe, are not big fans of AI.
- 39:20SPEAKER_01: They don't like it.
- 39:21SPEAKER_03: My kids don't like it.
- 39:23SPEAKER_01: Because it you know, they see the downside of that.
- 39:26SPEAKER_01: It's like you know, you could I you could probably sw swing your way through college and just have AI doing all your homework and stuff like that if you figured out how to run that and do it.
- 39:37SPEAKER_01: And it's like that's not fair.
- 39:38SPEAKER_01: It's like, man, I hope nobody in the urgent care or the ER got out of school, medical school by doing, you know, AI stuff.
- 39:48SPEAKER_03: I hope not too.
- 39:49SPEAKER_01: But there's nothing nothing replaces real world time, real world m mistakes, and uh that time in the field.
- 39:58unknown: Yeah.
- 39:59SPEAKER_01: And I think them young people love it.
- 40:01SPEAKER_01: And I I it fired me up to see them young people coming to talk to Bill Dance.
- 40:06SPEAKER_03: There's no better way to get experience and stories of your own than to go approach people like that.
- 40:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:13SPEAKER_01: Like I said about Kevin Van Damme though, being the goat and the reason he's the goat now, and he is c clearly the goat as far as competitive fishing goes.
- 40:25SPEAKER_01: But uh it it's like there's great bass fishermen everywhere.
- 40:29SPEAKER_01: And when people hit that level, so like Hank Parker once he won he won the bass master thing like the second time, he just walked away from it because his kids were young.
- 40:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 40:41SPEAKER_01: See, that's a that's a different level of person who conquered that, got that figured out, walked away from it.
- 40:49SPEAKER_01: They're not doing that kind of stuff for ego.
- 40:52SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 40:52SPEAKER_01: You gotta have them priorities right.
- 40:54SPEAKER_01: Nobody's gonna care when you're gone if your bow shoots 350 feet a second, or if it just kind of lobs one down there and hits a knock first.
- 41:04SPEAKER_01: Nobody's gonna tell that story.
- 41:05SPEAKER_01: Nobody knows.
- 41:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 41:07SPEAKER_01: Nobody cares.
- 41:08SPEAKER_03: So just hunt.
- 41:10SPEAKER_01: It's all good, just hunt.
- 41:12SPEAKER_03: It's all good, just hunt.
- 41:14SPEAKER_01: Speaking of which, I don't I know it's uh look, it ain't even good bow season yet.
- 41:20SPEAKER_01: But uh for you uh people that are coming to the NWTF, National Wild Turkey Federation, we are gonna give away.
- 41:28SPEAKER_01: I don't know how we're gonna do it, we're gonna give away a hunt with me and Dave Owens.
- 41:32SPEAKER_03: Giveaway.
- 41:33SPEAKER_01: Giveaway.
- 41:34SPEAKER_01: You don't have to buy it, we're gonna figure out how you sign it, drop it in a box, we're gonna draw it.
- 41:38SPEAKER_03: Give it away.
- 41:39SPEAKER_01: You don't have to auction, you don't have to bid, you don't have to nothing.
- 41:42SPEAKER_03: And uh you and Dave Owens at one of your honey holes.
- 41:46SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 41:47SPEAKER_01: To say it's a honey hole is an understatement.
- 41:49SPEAKER_01: Let me tell you this.
- 41:50SPEAKER_01: I've taken people to this thing on many, many occasions as far as uh uh auction hunt and all that.
- 41:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 41:57SPEAKER_01: And I'm I probably shouldn't say it out loud, and this may break my streak.
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: I'm a hundred percent.
- 42:03SPEAKER_01: One hundred percent getting a turkey at this place.
- 42:06SPEAKER_01: And uh I don't know who would be more excited, the person that we pull out of that box or me getting to hunt with Dave Owens.
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: And uh he he's committed.
- 42:18SPEAKER_01: Now, at the same time, we're gonna it's gonna be two of y'all hunting the guy that we auctioned off a hunt for Dr.
- 42:25SPEAKER_01: Marcus Lashley and crew at University of Florida Game Lab.
- 42:29SPEAKER_01: And uh that person who auctioned, who won that hunt, who bid that hunt, got the highest bid, he'll be there.
- 42:36SPEAKER_01: And then we're gonna bring somebody just average person.
- 42:40SPEAKER_01: And you talking about something I'm looking forward to.
- 42:43SPEAKER_01: And uh it's like I told you, I uh when I got Dave, Dave Owens like that.
- 42:48SPEAKER_01: I said, two rules, and I talked to you about it the other day.
- 42:50SPEAKER_01: I said, number one, you're gonna do all the calling, and number two, you can't feel me getting up out of my turkey chair because that is an Olympic event.
- 42:58SPEAKER_01: But anyway, didn't mean to go on a rant.
- 43:01SPEAKER_01: When I saw that comment about, hey, that air is kind of long, I was like, hmm, come on, dude.
- 43:06SPEAKER_03: Let's not start that.
- 43:07SPEAKER_01: Let's not start that.
- 43:09SPEAKER_01: I've I've killed lots of deer with a bow and air.
- 43:13SPEAKER_01: And if you're still killing them at my age, then maybe you can make that comment.
- 43:17SPEAKER_01: I looked at him like he was like 18 or something like that.
- 43:19SPEAKER_01: I was like, don't, don't, don't make those kind of comments.
- 43:22SPEAKER_03: Please don't.
- 43:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, don't throw shade on people like whoever, Levi, Spook, Cam, Haynes.
- 43:28SPEAKER_01: You know, envy is a terrible thing.
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: See what you can learn, make yourself better.
- 43:33SPEAKER_01: So anyway, didn't mean to rant.
- 43:35SPEAKER_01: And uh anyway, hopefully got a really cool bow hunting story for next week.
- 43:41SPEAKER_01: I'll keep you posted.
- 43:42SPEAKER_03: Fingers crossed.
- 43:43SPEAKER_01: Fingers crossed.
- 43:44SPEAKER_01: Maybe it's not 99.9 degrees and 86% humidity, and we'll give you a football update, too, for next week.
- 43:52SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 43:52SPEAKER_01: Cranky's doing really well.
- 43:55SPEAKER_01: His high school team's doing really well, and I don't want to talk about it.
- 43:58SPEAKER_01: Just like Mr.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: Just like Mississippi State.
- 44:01SPEAKER_01: I ain't gonna talk about it.
- 44:03SPEAKER_01: Again, I'm a casual fan.
- 44:05SPEAKER_01: Didn't go there, but good for them.
- 44:07SPEAKER_01: Lots of good stuff going over there.
- 44:09SPEAKER_01: And I will tell you this whether you like Mississippi State or Ole Miss or not.
- 44:14SPEAKER_01: Two of the best quarterbacks on the planet.
- 44:16SPEAKER_01: And both of 'em went and prayed with their mom before the game and thank God afterwards.
- 44:23SPEAKER_01: It just don't get any better.
- 44:25SPEAKER_01: I think the worm is turning from the woke stuff.
- 44:28SPEAKER_01: It's just my opinion.
- 44:30SPEAKER_01: Anyway, didn't mean to rant.
- 44:33SPEAKER_01: I don't even know if I don't make a podcast.
- 44:35SPEAKER_01: That's uh Laureen's take.
- 44:36SPEAKER_01: If it did, I hope you enjoyed it.
- 44:38SPEAKER_01: So from me and Laurreen up in the Camo Cave, God bless each and every one of you.
- 44:43SPEAKER_01: Thanks again for listening.
