- 1:38for thousand dollars off in this lessons episode discover the art of channeling intense passion
- 1:43into peak performance learn why mastering the balance between drive and recovery is essential
- 1:48to prevent burnout and injury discover how adaptive coaching transforms raw energy into disciplined
- 1:54excellence and understand how managing high pressure relationships fuels long-term success
- 2:09that mindset that hunger that can be a blessing but I would I would assume that if it's not
- 2:18channeled in the right way that could also destroy your career because you're going to
- 2:23injure something hurt yourself blow something up if you don't channel that energy and aggression
- 2:28in the right way you have this art of taking that that passion and that and that aggression
- 2:35and putting it towards something useful but I see a lot of athletes burn out and and pull this
- 2:42and break that because they are so into it but then they don't know when to stop
- 2:48and they don't know when to take time off and they don't know when to recover so there's an art
- 2:52to this too it's not just all in and never take your foot off the gas no you're absolutely right
- 2:59there this a nursing art to this you know when to say it how to say it why to say it but once
- 3:05again one of the staples of what I do I make it fun but serious you know in their kids first
- 3:13and tennis player second you know there's an art of probing and how to say it it depending on the
- 3:18age and whether I'm talking to an eight-year-old who's the best in the world or someone 23
- 3:2330 in the world on the WTA tour it's a very different dynamic the art of coaching you just all
- 3:29read a book and you figure this stuff out you know and the best compliment or one of the best
- 3:35complies ever got in my life was at the after party after the red carpet with Venus and Shrina
- 3:42and they both said Rick we were literally brainwashed to become number one the positivity I put
- 3:49around that okay everybody I should be in the hall of video for just putting up with Richard
- 3:54Jesus what was that all about you know but no I got it because I was there for Venus and Shrina
- 4:00but they said that you know it was always about the future it was always about well hangus is going
- 4:06to get that nabber trovo to get that wrap is going to get that hapriotti would get that I'm talking
- 4:11to 11-year-olds now you got to have the thoroughbred to maybe win the derby but you got to have the
- 4:17thoroughbred that's mentally strong and the belief that was put in to then you got all these boxes
- 4:24big strong fast quick pretty high-level technique great surers so you get this package and greatness
- 4:31is a package but like Shrina she would get mad a lot but then she got more determined mac and
- 4:40row is kind of like that most some people get mad and they disappear they show their cards
- 4:45they're opponent they can't regroup you even see that on the tour you know breaking points okay
- 4:51and I don't clone people it's not like the same person everybody I teach everybody a little
- 4:57different and I know how far it can go because I want someone with a backbone I want someone
- 5:03with passion I want someone with anger but like you said you got to control it because sometimes
- 5:08you just don't want to work harder you got to work smarter amazing and then I'm just very curious
- 5:15managing the dynamic because I mean everybody has actually now seen the movie seen you know the
- 5:23dynamic between Richard and yourself and the girls as a coach how do you manage a dynamic of
- 5:33somebody like Richard who is obviously you're all focused on the girl's success that's the end goal
- 5:39but two very different personalities and I know there was even a sort of like a break up point
- 5:46where there was a letter written and I don't want to spend because everyone has seen the story I
- 5:51you know judging by you recounting a lot of it was quite accurate I don't want to spend too much
- 5:56time on what people already know but just from your perspective how do you manage these really high
- 6:00tension relationships when everyone's a high performing individual well no one no one has been
- 6:08around the block in this area in the whole world than myself Stefano Capriotti Jim Pierce
- 6:17Yuri Sherpova you know and Richard Williams you know you got to understand
- 6:23there it's you see daddy's little girl doesn't happen a lot with the boys like Roddy's parents
- 6:28weren't even involved you carry your own water this is his thing it's a different dynamic you know
- 6:34the boys but I think the first thing is you got to know when to keep your mouth shut some of the
- 6:40best coaching is not saying anything you know and feeling the temperature I'm very good at
- 6:45reading people when to say this or when not to where if you're so set in your ways this
- 6:51thing would have blown up in a week and I knew it was going to be a challenge because even though
- 6:57Richard was setting his ways it wasn't really a tennis coach unreal father one of the best ever
- 7:04I mean the girls brought their books to the court every day and if it rained he said go up in
- 7:08Rick's office and study and every single night good bad happy sad the girls are giving me a hug
- 7:15and say Rick thank you very much listen that's a world class dad and mom so you know it was a little
- 7:21different dynamic but and that's why I had so much respect for him even though he might say some
- 7:26off the wall things and there's a lot of controversy I made him legendary before they even did
- 7:32anything a lot of media I mean it was out of control but I think no one wanted to keep your mouth shut
- 7:39and I was there because I just love the girls I was on a mission I was rolling the dice it's one
- 7:46thing people can love something if you're getting paid for yeah I was just like you know I was all
- 7:52in well it was the office it was you invest the office it's okay to say hey I think you're good it's
- 7:58one thing to put out hundreds of thousands or a million dollars and you know go for the gusto I
- 8:04could have been wrong you know so at the end of the day I think just knowing when to take a deep
- 8:10breath you don't react you know to anything and when Richard wasn't there that's what I would go
- 8:17in technically and do some reconstructive surgery you know because at the end of the day they're
- 8:22going home eating bitter and you're not there at the table so I take any coach I hear that you
- 8:28know you got to know how to handle this and not be set in your ways and listen because of the
- 8:35petter griegaud and everything I've done eventually some of the pairs that he started telling me
- 8:40what to do out of hit a four and I'm going whoa wait wait I wrote their curriculum for the USPTA
- 8:46it's like I don't get into that I just try to get better and my favorite student is really
- 8:52who's on the other side of the net that hour or that minute that second I've always felt that way
- 8:57and so I'm all about the players I don't get into the other stuff but it takes a strong line
- 9:04to be able to think like I think and handle in the parents like that well I would say like I think
- 9:08that you know just listening to how you manage all these relationships and you practice what you
- 9:13preach so not only not only you know it's one thing for the person performing to have the mindset
- 9:20and the billion dollar mind right but all the people that that person surrounds themselves with
- 9:27also have to have that billion dollar high performance mind because if not then the support
- 9:33and the guidance that they're getting is not going to be of quality like if you got emotional
- 9:39doesn't matter if you found a way to work with somebody who could be the next Michael Jordan or
- 9:44two of them right it only matters if you can properly serve them as a coach and to do that you
- 9:50got to be like you know eating your own dog food so to speak or else you're not going to be able to
- 9:54do it that's very good I love it um I just want to take a second and thank cornbread ham for
- 10:00supporting today's episode now cornbread ham CBD gummies have been this really nice addition

- 11:09thought as sort of as you look back there was like a lot of a lot of incredibly impressive moments
- 11:15when you were working with them when you look at sort of how you split and how you stopped working
- 11:22with them was there any things that you wish you did different any regrets on how you handled the
- 11:27relationship anything at all I'm just curious about that and then let's move into a little bit more
- 11:32of the link between like mindset and performance to some of the things that you speak about in the book
- 11:37yeah well no first off not really I don't I never look in the review mirror I never look back
- 11:45I'm trying to get better if you're not getting better you're getting worse but regarding that
- 11:49situation it's it was a little complex because when it ended you know Venus got you know the 12
- 12:01million dollar contract from Reebok okay and no one helped put more zero is behind that deal
- 12:07then Rick Macy you know what I mean the helium in the balloon and besides she played that tournament
- 12:15and shown he played that tournament no clen because they changed the age eligibility rule or we
- 12:20wouldn't even play that tournament we kind of had to to beat the system to get in there so she
- 12:25wouldn't have someone dictating and Richard agreed you didn't want to buy dictate to him so when she
- 12:30made that debut I didn't know what was going to happen I would know they see this tall long
- 12:35girl that ran like the wind okay and they'd say she has enormous potential and the fact she
- 12:41drops Sean Stafford 57 in the world and almost beat number one who she hadn't played a match in
- 12:47three and a half years junior or anything people go whoa whoa this kid's going to be amazing
- 12:53and our little sister what Rick says might he'd be better so you got that as the backdrop eight
- 12:59months later 12 million dollars we had an agreement but it didn't kind of go the way it should
- 13:05but Richard offered me $1 million a year for the next five years a million a year for five years
- 13:11to be exclusively with the girls when I have to give up my business and that kind of was like whoa
- 13:18because when you do something for you know four years and it's a crapshoot okay and there's a lot
- 13:25of things from the past okay and then the goal post kind of change even though there was a new
- 13:30opportunity okay I just felt like whoa you got to understand when I say four years six hours a
- 13:38day or whatever five days a week four hours on Saturday they were like my own daughter you got
- 13:44to understand it doesn't sound like a lot but every day there was like this was up and down or
- 13:49whatever and you know Richard felt you read the letter as you acknowledged so should I
- 13:56do that deal uh no I never look back you know I don't I just reload and then after that obviously
- 14:03at a big hand with you know mosquito share polva and cannon and many many other people and I run
- 14:09a business you know and it's a great model so really at the end of the day no regrets that's kind
- 14:15of how it ended but what's interesting how everything is come full circle and you know hundreds of
- 14:22millions of people I'd had no really what I did where before it might have been from Compton the
- 14:30center court you know and all all Richard you know what I mean great and you know as a coach it
- 14:35there's also so much a win in the hitting partner like one doe boxing ballet you have no idea what
- 14:42went into this because I believe so yeah no regrets and here we are today and everybody's like
- 14:51uh we've reunited it we see it and Shrine and I might even doing this docu series of phenom maker so
