- 0:07Speaker 2: The Birds are back at training camp getting.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Ready for their preseason OPRAH on the fifteenth against the Ravens.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Let's get into.
- 0:15Speaker 1: It now for today's football and four powered by the
- 0:18Speaker 1: Inside the Birds podcast, which you can get on all
- 0:21Speaker 1: podcasting platforms. Adam Kaplan is here and Adam, we have
- 0:25Speaker 1: the first full week of camp practices some paths, they're outside.
- 0:30Speaker 1: What do we got happening during the first week of
- 0:33Speaker 1: practice so far?
- 0:34Speaker 3: Yeah, Mike, this week they're all gonna have one day off.
- 0:38Speaker 3: It's crazy, you know, they're going to be off on Sunday.
- 0:42Speaker 3: They're walked through which is a modified practice. Yes it's
- 0:45Speaker 3: not a real practice, but they're going through place that's
- 0:48Speaker 3: on Thursday. Full practice is Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, full
- 0:51Speaker 3: practice Friday and Saturday. So yeah, this is absolutely the
- 0:55Speaker 3: first full week where they have three Last week they're
- 0:59Speaker 3: two days in paths. Now, this is the first one today.
- 1:01Speaker 3: I was there, Mike, first one outside and you could
- 1:05Speaker 3: just tell guys had a lot of energy offense. As
- 1:09Speaker 3: a long ways to go we'll explain a little bit
- 1:11Speaker 3: more so it's injury related, but it's been kind of
- 1:16Speaker 3: what we thought, Mike. The offense is going to behind
- 1:18Speaker 3: the defense. That's not a surprise. I told you that
- 1:20Speaker 3: three months ago that was going to happen. That's exactly
- 1:23Speaker 3: where we're at. But Mike, the concern is, Mike, you
- 1:27Speaker 3: would ask me this before camp started if ky Levion
- 1:30Speaker 3: wasn't ready. Well, he was ready, and now he's not.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Once again, the dreaded hamstring problem.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Hate the hamstring problem.
- 1:38Speaker 1: I know yesterday we kind of asked Andrew why he
- 1:42Speaker 1: missed practice. He didn't really want to speculate, but it
- 1:44Speaker 1: seems that this thing that popped up in OTAs is
- 1:49Speaker 1: now popping up again for Makay Lemon.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Yeah, nor should he specul because we didn't know. Like
- 1:54Speaker 3: you're not going to guess when you don't know what
- 1:56Speaker 3: it is. But here's the thing. I do know. He
- 1:58Speaker 3: has missed more practice time than he's been available since
- 2:01Speaker 3: he was drafted, because you know, they remember they shut
- 2:04Speaker 3: him down very early with the hamsterring and now unfortunately
- 2:06Speaker 3: again he's down. So this is not good, Mike. This
- 2:09Speaker 3: is he's behind in his learning, he's a rookie. He's
- 2:13Speaker 3: got a learning new scheme. And I could tell you
- 2:15Speaker 3: from coming this league for well over two decades, quarterbacks
- 2:18Speaker 3: will not go to guys, nor are their offense to
- 2:21Speaker 3: coordinator play call plays to a receiver who's not ready.
- 2:25Speaker 3: So we'll see. We're going to see once he's ready
- 2:28Speaker 3: to go and clear it again to practice how far
- 2:31Speaker 3: behind he is. But look, with injury, it comes opportunity.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Logamore very active for the second day or of fact,
- 2:37Speaker 3: he looked really good today. He's wearing number nineteen, former
- 2:41Speaker 3: second round pick of the Jets like he's as I
- 2:44Speaker 3: told you when they signed him, he could play the slaughter,
- 2:46Speaker 3: he could play the Z position, which is Devontae Smith's position.
- 2:49Speaker 3: DeVante Smith out with a hamster injury day to day
- 2:52Speaker 3: injury and Mike it really showed. The offense really struggled.
- 2:57Speaker 3: And the thing that you know with an issue Mike
- 2:59Speaker 3: was the and when it Hurts got the ball out
- 3:03Speaker 3: that the past target wasn't always there and vice versa.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Hurts was late with some throws, but he also made
- 3:08Speaker 3: some great throws to number thirteen, the Don Taevin Wicks,
- 3:11Speaker 3: who's been phenomenal. Mike. This is yet another very productive practice.
- 3:17Speaker 3: He knows the scheme, he knows the West Coast scheme,
- 3:18Speaker 3: he knows where he's supposed to be. He's not dropping passes.
- 3:21Speaker 3: He had one diving catch which the referee on the
- 3:26Speaker 3: right side I was able to get a direct shot
- 3:28Speaker 3: at it would not he ruled incomplete. But he's at
- 3:31Speaker 3: a very productive camp. I know it's only practice. I
- 3:34Speaker 3: know they don't hit, but he's done a good job
- 3:37Speaker 3: so far.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Let's take a look at you know, you talked about
- 3:41Speaker 1: opportunity and the development of these wide receivers. Yeah, if
- 3:45Speaker 1: Lemon misses time, I mean, how much of a like
- 3:48Speaker 1: a detriment is that to what they want to accomplish offensively?
- 3:51Speaker 3: Yeah, good question. So let's say, for instance, right, Mike,
- 3:54Speaker 3: let's say Lemon's dealing with on and off and yeah,
- 3:58Speaker 3: he's ready for the start of the season, but clearly behind. Still, well,
- 4:02Speaker 3: that increases the chances, Mike, as we talk about development
- 4:05Speaker 3: of this group, that Elijah Moore, who's got no guaranteed
- 4:08Speaker 3: money in his one year deal, makes the team. We
- 4:11Speaker 3: thought he was a major long shot. Well think of
- 4:13Speaker 3: it this way, right, we know he's definitely on the roster, Lemon,
- 4:16Speaker 3: DeVante Smith, Wicks, Hollywood. Brown's making five million. He's not
- 4:19Speaker 3: going anywhere. But after that, we'll get to Darius Cooper,
- 4:23Speaker 3: We'll get to Danny Gray. Wes Watkins made a play
- 4:26Speaker 3: at Erquezukama, former draft pick of the Dolphins. But if
- 4:29Speaker 3: Lemon is not ready, because he's going to play almost
- 4:33Speaker 3: all slot, that's where Devonte's who could play inside, and
- 4:37Speaker 3: Lojah Moore, where his best football has been as an
- 4:40Speaker 3: inside receiver. It increases at Mike. I didn't think they
- 4:44Speaker 3: keep six receivers. Well, you know what, if a guy's
- 4:47Speaker 3: not ready to contribute the someone else's got to play.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Logiamore is ready, he's healthy. I know he's been on
- 4:52Speaker 3: a number of teams. I get it. But the guys
- 4:55Speaker 3: he's starting to take off Mike, so he as we
- 4:58Speaker 3: talk about the development, he flashing. Hylo Brown makes more plays.
- 5:02Speaker 3: We want to see more plays downfield. Darrek Cooper has
- 5:05Speaker 3: been very consistent. He was tremendous last year. Mike, he's
- 5:09Speaker 3: in there, he's in the red zone package, he can block,
- 5:12Speaker 3: he's very physical inside. He's got a very good chance
- 5:16Speaker 3: to make it, and right now he'd be their fifth receiver.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Brown will be the four. You know, Rix is going
- 5:20Speaker 3: to be a quasi starter anyway because he'll play enough
- 5:22Speaker 3: eleven personnel. He'll be on the field a lot. And
- 5:25Speaker 3: look again, we don't know about Lemon and when he's
- 5:27Speaker 3: going to be ready to take more snaps. Brig Covey's
- 5:31Speaker 3: flashed a ton number nine, number eighteen, who is finding
- 5:35Speaker 3: to be their punt returner. Danny Gray could run, but
- 5:37Speaker 3: he's had a number of injuries. He's well below the
- 5:39Speaker 3: depth chart there. He's number four, fourth team offense. Kleus
- 5:42Speaker 3: Watkins back once again, wearing a new number of eighty six.
- 5:46Speaker 3: Erica as a Comma Asukama was on the Dolphins. He's
- 5:51Speaker 3: played in the West Coast. He's he's a fourth front
- 5:54Speaker 3: pick out of twenty twenty two. Never made it, just
- 5:58Speaker 3: never produced, but he's got good size of Texas tech. Mike,
- 6:01Speaker 3: and yeah, it's pretty much Samari Toy, who knows the
- 6:03Speaker 3: offense is formerly of the Packers, was a draft pick.
- 6:06Speaker 3: So that's it, Mike. But that's rounding up. And Johnny Wilson,
- 6:09Speaker 3: who's running thirteen. You know he was in the OTA
- 6:13Speaker 3: is he's healthy, Mike, and the only reason why he
- 6:15Speaker 3: make it is the block, but he's far down the
- 6:18Speaker 3: depth chock right now, he's on the outside looking in.
- 6:21Speaker 1: All right, let's take a look at some of the
- 6:22Speaker 1: other things happening in a camp. One of the things
- 6:25Speaker 1: that everybody is kind of paying attention to is the
- 6:27Speaker 1: timing of the passing game led by Jalen Hurts.
- 6:30Speaker 3: All right, so I talked about before, but I'll give
- 6:35Speaker 3: you a couple of things that I saw.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Also.
- 6:36Speaker 3: In addition, there was a great timing route Hurts through
- 6:39Speaker 3: to the right sideline. It's actually right in front of me,
- 6:43Speaker 3: and the ball was there before he got there. That
- 6:46Speaker 3: is called timing with some anticipation, more time than anticipation.
- 6:50Speaker 3: That is what you want from Hurts. It doesn't matter
- 6:53Speaker 3: that DeVante Smith is not practicing. It's Hurts his job
- 6:56Speaker 3: to get the ball to the pass target on time.
- 7:00Speaker 3: If it's if the guy, you know, the guy's got
- 7:03Speaker 3: to get there. But Tom Brady, who's the best time
- 7:06Speaker 3: in quarterback in the NFL history, never worried about who
- 7:08Speaker 3: he's working with.
- 7:09Speaker 2: By the way, he will be on the call for
- 7:10Speaker 2: the Eagles first game.
- 7:12Speaker 3: Yeah, yep, it's Washington, Yep, yep. Brady had the best
- 7:18Speaker 3: practice I've ever seen in my life twenty five for
- 7:19Speaker 3: twenty five year with New England joint practice, he didn't
- 7:24Speaker 3: care who the past target was. That ball going where
- 7:26Speaker 3: it's supposed to be and it's up to the past
- 7:27Speaker 3: tarket to get open. And that's gonna be new for Jalen.
- 7:30Speaker 3: But I love that thrower you see. That matters to me.
- 7:32Speaker 3: That throwing mid the wicks. That shows me he can
- 7:35Speaker 3: do it. But he's got to do it more. Now
- 7:37Speaker 3: the past target's got to get there. There were some
- 7:39Speaker 3: times there were timing issues where were hurts in the
- 7:42Speaker 3: past target were clearly off. And then obviously how when
- 7:45Speaker 3: Smith gets back and Lemon gets back, it's gonna look
- 7:47Speaker 3: different just to run off the past target group. Eli Stowers,
- 7:52Speaker 3: he's number eighty seven, where Brent Selix number who brought it.
- 7:54Speaker 3: I Brent was there today and working with some players,
- 7:58Speaker 3: but Cam mat who's there. They're loaded at tight end, man,
- 8:02Speaker 3: they're super deep in that position. Eli Stowers has got
- 8:06Speaker 3: a long way. He's got to fill out to Mike,
- 8:07Speaker 3: He's got to bulk up a little bit.
- 8:09Speaker 1: So the timing of the passing game will be a
- 8:12Speaker 1: I guess you would define as a work in progress.
- 8:15Speaker 3: Big time, big time working yet nothing but understand I
- 8:19Speaker 3: told you this. Nothing that's happened should not be supposed
- 8:22Speaker 3: to anyone who knows anything. This is what I thought
- 8:24Speaker 3: would happen. It's not a surprising plus. McConn Lemon's not practicing.
- 8:28Speaker 3: He's barely practiced, Mike, so that's a problem. Smith is
- 8:31Speaker 3: out lane. Johnson's away from the team. Excuse absence. I
- 8:37Speaker 3: don't know what it is, but not going to speculate.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Markel bellsold first team reps in his place again at
- 8:43Speaker 3: at right tackle. Michael Mars has got an injury. You
- 8:48Speaker 3: know who's a six round guard from Georgia. And Michael
- 8:51Speaker 3: Jordan number seventy nine where Bradon Brooks number he's he's
- 8:55Speaker 3: getting a little bit overrun. As with the second team
- 8:57Speaker 3: offense here, William Lampkins way down the pipe of people asking.
- 9:01Speaker 3: He's sort of like the everybody wants to know about
- 9:03Speaker 3: Willie Lampkin. Small offensive line I've ever seen in twenty
- 9:06Speaker 3: seven years of Covian's business. He's small, but he's squatty, strong, athletic,
- 9:10Speaker 3: but he's small. But that's it. Mike john a joke.
- 9:14Speaker 3: I like who's a third team tackle, who's super athletic,
- 9:18Speaker 3: number sixty seven. He's sort of my training camp sleeper.
- 9:22Speaker 3: If you want to look at a guy who'd come
- 9:23Speaker 3: out of nowhere and make it, I doubt it, but
- 9:26Speaker 3: that is where Janadjoku is. But that's it, Mike. Offensively, Yes,
- 9:31Speaker 3: it's been what I thought. It's a complete work in
- 9:33Speaker 3: progress with the timing all.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Right, So the timing thing will be something everybody's paying
- 9:37Speaker 1: attention to in watching. But the one thing when that
- 9:40Speaker 1: real quick is you're probably not going to see that
- 9:42Speaker 1: in preseason games though, right.
- 9:44Speaker 2: That's going to all unfold in week one of the
- 9:46Speaker 2: regular season.
- 9:47Speaker 3: You're going to have to be patient, folks. I'm just
- 9:50Speaker 3: telling you, please be patient. I told it you, Mike.
- 9:53Speaker 3: The reporters are going to bash the offense in May.
- 9:56Speaker 3: They did for the OTAs. I get it. You only
- 9:59Speaker 3: go by what they see. They're not smart enough to
- 10:00Speaker 3: understand that this when you completely change something, it takes months,
- 10:06Speaker 3: not weeks. You got to give it time. Now, one
- 10:11Speaker 3: more thing before you get to the defense. Now, the
- 10:14Speaker 3: offensive line does look healthy. Now run blocking again, they
- 10:17Speaker 3: don't hit. There's only so much you could tell. It'll
- 10:20Speaker 3: be surprised of us if the first team offensive plays
- 10:23Speaker 3: in the preseason, so we may not know, Mike about
- 10:26Speaker 3: where they are physically. Mike, they look good, but we
- 10:29Speaker 3: still don't know. You gotta be careful of making any assumptions.
- 10:32Speaker 3: We just don't know yet. So offensively, it's a work
- 10:35Speaker 3: of progress. The quarterbacks, all three of them, the top three,
- 10:38Speaker 3: have to do a better job of the timing right defense.
- 10:41Speaker 1: I asked Andrew, yes, say can this defense be better
- 10:43Speaker 1: than last year's. Unequivocally, without pause, he said, yes, I
- 10:47Speaker 1: heard that.
- 10:47Speaker 3: I did listen to the segment. I was surprised he
- 10:49Speaker 3: said that, which I like it, and he.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Made sure that he told everybody if you notice, I
- 10:55Speaker 1: did not pause when I said that.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Without thinking, he said, Lex Sun is.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Our guy here at inside the Birth. He has been
- 11:02Speaker 3: since he was drafted in the third round. He's my
- 11:03Speaker 3: breakout player on both sides and not just defense. He's
- 11:06Speaker 3: been my guy.
- 11:06Speaker 2: From day one.
- 11:09Speaker 3: It's pretty interesting he is so he is so ready, Mike,
- 11:13Speaker 3: I'd be surprised if he's not really good. He does
- 11:16Speaker 3: everything well. He understands his run fits. You have to
- 11:19Speaker 3: remember this is only his fifth season as an edge
- 11:22Speaker 3: rusher two in college, three in the pros. He grew
- 11:25Speaker 3: into his body. Remember at nineteen years old, he grew
- 11:29Speaker 3: like four inches. He went from or five inches. He
- 11:32Speaker 3: went from being a safety to an intrusher at Houston Christian.
- 11:37Speaker 3: He's made an unbelievably really good push. I know Andrew
- 11:41Speaker 3: did tell me. I spoke to him after he and
- 11:43Speaker 3: I were at practice. He said, at Ketty's actually flashing
- 11:46Speaker 3: a little bit, So we wanted to mention that. But
- 11:48Speaker 3: my training camp sleeper, and I didn't know what to
- 11:51Speaker 3: expect from this guy because he's he failed at Brown's
- 11:53Speaker 3: physical is aj Epanessa, who's not as heavy as I thought.
- 11:58Speaker 3: He is not to seventy, there's no I don't see that.
- 12:02Speaker 3: He's long at you know, he's very tall. Former second
- 12:04Speaker 3: ROUNDA for the Bills, really good run defender. He is flashed, Mike.
- 12:10Speaker 3: He is seeing a little bit of first team when
- 12:13Speaker 3: the first team needs a breather. He's in there on
- 12:15Speaker 3: bass downs, on rundowns, Mike, He's out there. He's got
- 12:19Speaker 3: a legit shot to make it, Mike. This guy again,
- 12:22Speaker 3: he's been a starter before. He's number fifty seven. For
- 12:26Speaker 3: those of you who are a season ticket holders or
- 12:28Speaker 3: get a chance to go to practice. Well, you'll see
- 12:30Speaker 3: him obviously in preseason watch number seven fifty seven a
- 12:33Speaker 3: j EPINESSA all right.
- 12:35Speaker 1: I like him as a player coming out of the
- 12:37Speaker 1: draft that year, had some injury issues as mentioned. We'll
- 12:41Speaker 1: see what he ends up bringing to the table here.
- 12:43Speaker 1: So those are some of the defensive standouts. You like
- 12:47Speaker 1: Jaylex Hunt. Andrew yesterday he liked Jay Lens Hunt, so
- 12:50Speaker 1: obviously Hunt a guy that we're all going to be watching.
- 12:52Speaker 1: They're very interesting to see what happens with the safety spots.
- 12:56Speaker 1: I know Andrew was talking about Marcus EPs yesterday on
- 12:59Speaker 1: the show, because it's there somebody gets hurt.
- 13:02Speaker 3: You know, a quality of depth my other than Michael Carter,
- 13:07Speaker 3: who's clear you behind Before we get out of here,
- 13:09Speaker 3: could you absolutely explain to me why I know Louisa
- 13:13Speaker 3: rises back and forth before although it's ridiculous.
- 13:16Speaker 2: No a lot.
- 13:17Speaker 3: I know, I know, but he has. But here's my question.
- 13:20Speaker 3: Why they move Schobert to lead off its steph of Turner,
- 13:24Speaker 3: Like what is can you explain it to me?
- 13:26Speaker 2: You know what?
- 13:27Speaker 1: I just think they're trying to break up the lefties.
- 13:29Speaker 1: I mean because if you go Schober, Harper got left
- 13:31Speaker 1: you lefty lefty now too much. The problem is that
- 13:34Speaker 1: the other side of the lineup, you've got marsh Stott,
- 13:36Speaker 1: Crawford and Shoreber.
- 13:37Speaker 3: You got four left leftiest man. I heard what Gabrowski said,
- 13:43Speaker 3: but arises the hit king man he is, he's, you know, lock,
- 13:48Speaker 3: he'll land send out the lineup he get he hits.
- 13:50Speaker 3: I mean the guy is a hit man. He's so
- 13:52Speaker 3: what he he is. If you're to remember Mike Eastler,
- 13:56Speaker 3: the hit man for the Pirates, like all this guy does,
- 14:00Speaker 3: but they're gonna be better. The rhyme's gonna be better.
- 14:04Speaker 3: It starts tonight. I have some friends are going to
- 14:06Speaker 3: the game tonight, so I'm looking forward to it. But man,
- 14:09Speaker 3: the pitching staff, the back end, the pitching staff worries me.
- 14:12Speaker 3: But they're going to be better, Mike defensively.
- 14:15Speaker 2: No, it's funny you said, Mike.
- 14:17Speaker 1: You remember Mike Eastler with the Pirates, and I was
- 14:20Speaker 1: thinking Red Sox. And by the way, he played a
- 14:22Speaker 1: handful of games with the Phillies.
- 14:23Speaker 2: You remember that dad.
- 14:24Speaker 3: Number thirty four Without looking I think he was thirty four.
- 14:27Speaker 3: Not positive about that.
- 14:28Speaker 2: With the Phillies. He was thirty four, Yes he was.
- 14:31Speaker 3: And by the way, did you know he helped he
- 14:36Speaker 3: Crawford grew up. I guess Carl, his dad, Carl Crawford
- 14:41Speaker 3: knows Mike Easler, so I guess he's been mentoring justin
- 14:45Speaker 3: kind of cool.
- 14:45Speaker 1: All right, man, Well do the little baseball conversation as
- 14:48Speaker 1: we get out on the Eagles training camp, and of
- 14:50Speaker 1: course we have it all right here on Football at
- 14:52Speaker 1: four and check out the Inside the Birds podcast, which
- 14:54Speaker 1: you can get on all podcasting platforms. Will do it
- 14:57Speaker 1: again tomorrow right here on the Sports Best.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Thanks man, Thank you,
