- 0:10Speaker 1: Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show where
- 0:12Speaker 1: conservation always wins. There is a prize. Meat Eater will
- 0:16Speaker 1: donate $ 500 to the conservation organization of the winner's choosing.
- 0:20Speaker 1: I'm your host, Spencer Newarth, and today we're joined by Seth, Logan, Sarah, Alyssa, John,
- 0:26Speaker 1: and Jen Pearson. This is a 10-round quiz show with
- 0:29Speaker 1: questions from Meat Eaters for Verticals, which are hunting, fishing, conservation,
- 0:34Speaker 1: and cooking. Meat Eater Trivia is brought to you by
- 0:36Speaker 1: one of my favorite beers, Bush Light. Bush Light, head
- 0:39Speaker 1: for the mountains. All right, Jen, first time on the show.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Tell folks what you do here at Meat Eater.
- 0:44Speaker 2: I am the Events and Marketing Operations Coordinator.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Yeah, anytime you go to a really cool Meat Eater
- 0:50Speaker 1: event and everything seems like it's running smooth and nothing
- 0:53Speaker 1: is on fire, that's thanks to Jen.
- 0:56Speaker 2: That's the hope.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Does it just feel like that, that you're just trying
- 0:59Speaker 1: to not have things on fire for these events?
- 1:01Speaker 2: Yes, and a lot of cat herding.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Yeah, a lot of cat herding with our crew. Jen,
- 1:06Speaker 1: what are going to be your strengths and weaknesses at
- 1:08Speaker 1: Meat Eater Trivia, hunting, fishing, conservation, cooking?
- 1:11Speaker 2: I feel like mostly weaknesses.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Okay, no strengths then.
- 1:16Speaker 2: I don't know, we'll see. Maybe we'll surprise it, but
- 1:18Speaker 2: there's a reason why this is my first time.
- 1:19Speaker 1: All right, we'll find out how Jen does. Okay, we're
- 1:22Speaker 1: starting today's show with a question for the crew. If
- 1:25Speaker 1: you have a question you want the crew to answer,
- 1:27Speaker 1: then send your question with a subject line mailbag to
- 1:30Speaker 1: trivia at TheMeatEater.com. This is a good one. It's from Clayton.
- 1:35Speaker 1: He says, I love sardines. The girls I work with, however,
- 1:37Speaker 1: hate sardines. Specifically, they hate the smell when I eat
- 1:41Speaker 1: them and apparently hate the smell that is left over
- 1:44Speaker 1: when I put the empty can in our shared kitchen trash.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I've tried to be reasonable. I started rinsing the can
- 1:49Speaker 1: out thoroughly before throwing it away, but apparently that isn't
- 1:52Speaker 1: good enough. They could still smell it and would let
- 1:54Speaker 1: me know they were displeased. So lately, I've been gathering
- 1:58Speaker 1: up all of my sardine evidence, can, packaging, napkins, whatever,
- 2:02Speaker 1: and carrying it outside to the dumpster. This feels like
- 2:06Speaker 1: a lot of effort, especially considering I am the executive director.
- 2:09Speaker 1: At some point, should the executive director be allowed to
- 2:13Speaker 1: throw a sardine can in the office trash? Am I
- 2:16Speaker 1: bending over backwards for my coworkers? Should I go back
- 2:18Speaker 1: to throwing my thoroughly rinsed sardine cans in the shared
- 2:22Speaker 1: kitchen trash? Or have I created a precedent that that
- 2:26Speaker 1: I now have to live with. What are our thoughts
- 2:29Speaker 1: for Clayton?
- 2:30Speaker 3: I hate the smell of sardines, but that is excessive.
- 2:33Speaker 3: I feel like those people need to learn how to
- 2:35Speaker 3: live with some discomfort in the workplace. That's a little extreme.
- 2:40Speaker 2: I love tinned fish of all forms.
- 2:44Speaker 4: I do think that when you're entering into an office environment,
- 2:48Speaker 4: you're subscribing to a different social contract than the one
- 2:51Speaker 4: that is at your house.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Microwaving fish.
- 2:55Speaker 4: Smelly stuff in the trash can like rinse them out
- 3:00Speaker 4: have some have some community-minded behavior in your workplace.
- 3:03Speaker 3: I think what are the thoughts yeah but like how
- 3:06Speaker 3: how fragile are you that you can't like have some
- 3:09Speaker 3: sort of minor discomfort for like some bad smells i
- 3:13Speaker 3: mean well.
- 3:14Speaker 5: Would you stick like a salmon fillet into the microwave
- 3:16Speaker 5: upstairs no.
- 3:18Speaker 3: But that's like That's intentionally, I don't know. It's him
- 3:21Speaker 3: consuming sardines and then putting the trash in the garbage.
- 3:24Speaker 3: I don't know. That just seems excessive that he needs
- 3:27Speaker 3: to rinse it and bag it. Seth, what do you think?
- 3:30Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 3:32Speaker 6: I'd love to know the office setup. These people have
- 3:35Speaker 6: doors to their offices and they can just shut the door?
- 3:38Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 3:39Speaker 2: That's what I was wondering.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Does he have his own office?
- 3:42Speaker 1: This is something that would probably.
- 3:45Speaker 2: You'd think so.
- 3:45Speaker 8: Windows.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Yeah. HR, what do we think about this problem?
- 3:49Speaker 7: Oh, wow. I think that some people have sensory issues.
- 3:55Speaker 7: And so their smells are much more heightened than other smells.
- 4:00Speaker 7: I'm not sure if that's the case here. But I
- 4:02Speaker 7: always feel like you should just be a good human.
- 4:05Speaker 7: And if it is offending a few other people, is
- 4:08Speaker 7: it that big of a deal to walk outside and
- 4:10Speaker 7: throw it away?
- 4:11Speaker 3: Or just don't bring it.
- 4:12Speaker 7: There's people who have allergies. You can't bring peanut butter.
- 4:15Speaker 7: There's all sorts of different things. So just not that
- 4:17Speaker 7: big of an inconvenience.
- 4:18Speaker 1: One of the questions that Clayton asks, he says, am
- 4:21Speaker 1: I bending over backwards for my coworkers? Yes, but that's
- 4:24Speaker 1: also okay. Like, I assume you like these people you
- 4:27Speaker 1: work with. You said you're the executive director. You want
- 4:30Speaker 1: to be like a good executive director, right? So it's
- 4:33Speaker 1: probably annoying to like hike that outside and throw it away.
- 4:37Speaker 1: But I bet your coworkers will appreciate you more. It's
- 4:39Speaker 1: probably worth like the minor inconvenience to just not have
- 4:43Speaker 1: sardine stink in the office. Any other thoughts for Clayton? John,
- 4:47Speaker 1: what kind of gross stuff do the store boys eat? Oh, everything. Sardines?
- 4:53Speaker 9: I don't know if we ever had canned fish, but
- 4:55Speaker 9: we also have a little basement, so we kind of
- 4:57Speaker 9: like escape the sales floor. So it's kind of easy
- 5:00Speaker 9: to ventilate a little bit, but I mean, we smell everything.
- 5:04Speaker 9: We smell like hunters that just came in that just
- 5:07Speaker 9: shot an elk.
- 5:08Speaker 7: You? Yep.
- 5:09Speaker 4: Yes, I did.
- 5:10Speaker 6: I shot a bull last week.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Congratulations.
- 5:12Speaker 6: Thank you. Thank you.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 5:14Speaker 9: But We have a whole kitchen set up. We've cooked venison,
- 5:19Speaker 9: we've cooked elk, we've cooked salmon. All of us guys,
- 5:24Speaker 9: we don't really say anything. We just shut the door
- 5:29Speaker 9: to our downstairs kitchen where we have our lunch and cook.
- 5:34Speaker 9: We have had some customers say, oh, it smells funky
- 5:36Speaker 9: in here. We're like, oh, yeah, something's out in the street.
- 5:40Speaker 6: None of you boys strike me as someone to be
- 5:44Speaker 6: complaining about smells in the kitchen. No, no, no.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Good luck with that one, Clayton. That's tough. It's too
- 5:52Speaker 1: bad you like the sardines so much. All right, here
- 5:56Speaker 1: is your chance to be on Meat Eater Trivia. You,
- 5:59Speaker 1: the listeners. Backcountry Hunters and Anglers is auctioning off a
- 6:02Speaker 1: seat in the room for a game of trivia. The
- 6:05Speaker 1: winning bidder will get to choose a date in 2027
- 6:08Speaker 1: to compete against Yanni and Brody and Randall and the
- 6:11Speaker 1: rest of the Meat Eater crew. Travel, lodging, and meals
- 6:13Speaker 1: are not included. All proceeds go to BHA. To place
- 6:18Speaker 1: your bid, go to backcountryhunters.org and check out their Forged
- 6:23Speaker 1: and Found online auction. The bidding ends September 30th. And
- 6:26Speaker 1: while you're there, check out their other auction blocks, such
- 6:29Speaker 1: as a Turnpike Troubadours concert package, a hunting and fishing
- 6:32Speaker 1: trip with Cal, a guided hunt in Hawaii, a Lifetime
- 6:35Speaker 1: OnX Elite membership, custom taxidermy, and much more. Again, that's
- 6:40Speaker 1: the Forged and Found online auction at backcountryhunters.org. All right,
- 6:47Speaker 1: the Shelby Index for today is a three, so our
- 6:49Speaker 1: winner should get six correct answers. And with that, we're
- 6:51Speaker 1: on to the game of trivia. Play the drop, Phil.
- 6:56Speaker 7: Look, I need to know what I stand to win.
- 6:59Speaker 10: Everything.
- 7:01Speaker 7: How's that?
- 7:02Speaker 5: You stand to win everything.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Question one, the topic is public lands, and this will
- 7:15Speaker 1: be multiple choice. Which of these places is not managed
- 7:20Speaker 1: by the National Park Service? Is it Gettysburg National Military Park,
- 7:27Speaker 1: Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site, Dinosaur National Monument, or
- 7:33Speaker 1: Pawnee National Grassland? So three of those places are managed
- 7:38Speaker 1: by the National Park Service. One of them is... is not,
- 7:43Speaker 1: which one is it? Gettysburg National Military Park, Edgar Allan
- 7:49Speaker 1: Poe National Historic Site, Dinosaur National Monument, or Pawnee National Grassland,
- 7:56Speaker 1: which one is not managed by the National Park Service?
- 8:08Speaker 1: Everyone in the room is just gonna be making a guess,
- 8:10Speaker 1: no confidence. No quick answers for question one. Which of
- 8:16Speaker 1: these places is not managed by the park service? Gettysburg
- 8:22Speaker 1: National Military Park, Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site, Dinosaur
- 8:28Speaker 1: National Monument, Pawnee National Grassland. This is a tough first question.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Category of public lands. Seth's still writing. Seth, are you ready?
- 8:44Speaker 6: Yeah, I changed my answer last minute.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth says Pawnee National Grassland.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Logan and Sarah say Edgar Allan Poe. John says dinosaur. Jen, dinosaur. Alyssa, Gettysburg.
- 9:01Speaker 1: The correct answer is Pawnee National Grassland. Just Seth. National
- 9:09Speaker 1: military parks and national historic sites are managed by the
- 9:13Speaker 1: National Park Service. National monuments are managed by a number
- 9:18Speaker 1: of agencies, but mostly belong to the National Park Service,
- 9:21Speaker 1: and national grasslands are managed by the U.S. Forest Service.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Question two, the topic is cooking. This next great question
- 9:29Speaker 1: is via Leland Hart. This seven-letter word is defined as, quote,
- 9:35Speaker 1: A cut of meat taken from the breast or lower
- 9:38Speaker 1: chest area of a hoofed animal, specifically over the sternum.
- 9:47Speaker 1: This seven-letter word is defined as a cut of meat
- 9:52Speaker 1: taken from the breast or lower chest area of a
- 9:56Speaker 1: hoofed animal, specifically over the sternum. John and Logan and
- 10:02Speaker 1: Seth all have their answers.
- 10:05Speaker 6: Come on, Jen, you got it.
- 10:09Speaker 1: John, tell us about killing that bull. Had a sweet
- 10:11Speaker 1: video of it happening. How'd you film that? You just
- 10:13Speaker 1: sat your phone up behind you?
- 10:14Speaker 9: Well, no, I actually bought a 360 GoPro and I
- 10:20Speaker 9: actually bought it like three weeks ago. I'm like, yeah,
- 10:22Speaker 9: this is, this'll be a cool thing to kind of
- 10:23Speaker 9: try out. And there's like a little remote that I
- 10:25Speaker 9: attached to my wrist. So just press a button and
- 10:28Speaker 9: it starts filming. And obviously 360 covers all angles.
- 10:32Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 10:33Speaker 9: Um, but I went out, it was a extremely rainy
- 10:36Speaker 9: morning that morning and the mud going in was absolutely legendary.
- 10:42Speaker 9: I almost got, I almost got stuck three different times,
- 10:45Speaker 9: but got up onto a ridgeline. Didn't hear any bugles, uh, Um,
- 10:49Speaker 9: so I just kind of like started covering drainage and
- 10:52Speaker 9: got to a glassing knob glass down into a drainage
- 10:54Speaker 9: and saw him, uh, way at the bottom, like 500
- 10:57Speaker 9: yards away, raking, uh, just a small little pine tree.
- 11:02Speaker 9: And so I moved in and got to about like 150,
- 11:05Speaker 9: 200 yards from him, threw out a couple of cow
- 11:08Speaker 9: calls and he just came right to me from the
- 11:10Speaker 9: time I called to when like I was drawn back.
- 11:15Speaker 9: and it was probably 15 seconds. I mean, he came
- 11:18Speaker 9: right in.
- 11:18Speaker 6: That's cool.
- 11:20Speaker 1: Great video. What's your Instagram handle that people can watch it?
- 11:23Speaker 9: My Instagram is just my full name, John, J-O-N, Montresser, M-O-N-T-R-E-S-O-R,
- 11:29Speaker 9: all lowercase and no space.
- 11:32Speaker 1: And the way it played out, it looked like just
- 11:33Speaker 1: a whitetail hunter waiting for a whitetail to walk by.
- 11:35Speaker 9: That's pretty much what it was, honestly. Yeah, the wind
- 11:39Speaker 9: was perfect direction. If I did let him go just
- 11:43Speaker 9: a little bit more, He probably would have caught a
- 11:45Speaker 9: whiff of me, but when I first saw him, it
- 11:48Speaker 9: was at 40 yards, and he closed that into 25,
- 11:51Speaker 9: and I was shooting downhill. My arrow did hit a
- 11:55Speaker 9: bit high, and I knew I got one lung and
- 11:57Speaker 9: some artery for sure, so he was going to die.
- 12:00Speaker 9: So I backed out, got to my glassing knob, and
- 12:03Speaker 9: then glassed him up dead in his bed 100 yards
- 12:05Speaker 9: from where I shot him.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Well done. Head into the Meteor store and give John
- 12:09Speaker 1: a high five. All right, again, we're on question two.
- 12:11Speaker 1: The seven letter word is defined as a cut of
- 12:13Speaker 1: meat taken from the breast or lower chest area of
- 12:15Speaker 1: a hoofed animal, specifically over the sternum. Is everybody ready?
- 12:21Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth says brisket, Logan brisket,
- 12:25Speaker 1: Sarah brisket, John brisket, Jen without an answer, Alyssa without
- 12:30Speaker 1: an answer. The correct answer is brisket. To learn how
- 12:34Speaker 1: to cook a deer brisket, go check out Danielle Pruitt's
- 12:37Speaker 1: article On TheMeatEater.com, called Balsamic Braised Venison, it is a
- 12:42Speaker 1: perfect five-star rating. Ben304 noted it has the texture and
- 12:47Speaker 1: taste of very good roast beef. AmosDean53 said it's his
- 12:52Speaker 1: new favorite roast recipe, and C. Trimble compared it to
- 12:55Speaker 1: eating at a fine dining restaurant. That's Danielle's balsamic braised
- 13:00Speaker 1: venison recipe.
- 13:01Speaker 5: So good.
- 13:02Speaker 1: She specifically uses brisket.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Is that the one with like all the red onions
- 13:07Speaker 3: and balsamic vinegar? Have you seen the recipe?
- 13:12Speaker 1: I probably have. I don't remember which one that is though.
- 13:14Speaker 3: So good. I'm pretty sure I know the one they're
- 13:15Speaker 3: talking about. I use that with bear. Phenomenal.
- 13:18Speaker 1: We're on to question three. The topic is hunting. This
- 13:21Speaker 1: next great question is via Daniel Steeman. Amos Slade sings, quote,
- 13:27Speaker 1: I ain't got no job. I'm a hunting man and
- 13:30Speaker 1: I'd rather have a dog than a dollar. in this
- 13:34Speaker 1: 1981 animated Disney movie? Jen's got this one.
- 13:39Speaker 6: I got this one, I think.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Disney movies. Amos Slade sings, I ain't got no job,
- 13:46Speaker 1: I'm a hunting man, and I'd rather have a dog
- 13:48Speaker 1: than a dollar in this 1981 animated Disney movie. Alyssa,
- 13:57Speaker 1: do you have this one?
- 13:58Speaker 8: I believe so.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Sarah, do you have this one?
- 14:00Speaker 2: I have a good guess.
- 14:02Speaker 7: Okay.
- 14:03Speaker 1: John, Seth, and Logan, not so sure though.
- 14:08Speaker 5: Should have watched more Disney.
- 14:09Speaker 3: Should have had kids earlier.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Amos Slade.
- 14:15Speaker 2: I don't know, I'm second guessing myself.
- 14:17Speaker 1: I ain't got no job. I'm a hunting man. And
- 14:20Speaker 1: I'd rather have a dog than a dollar in this
- 14:24Speaker 1: 1981 animated Disney movie. We might have a little performance
- 14:30Speaker 1: from Phil the Engineer after this one. Seth, do you
- 14:37Speaker 1: have a good answer?
- 14:38Speaker 6: I don't know. I just threw one down that might
- 14:41Speaker 6: make sense.
- 14:41Speaker 1: John, you have an answer?
- 14:43Speaker 6: I do.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Logan, you good?
- 14:44Speaker 7: Yep.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth says Fox and
- 14:49Speaker 1: the Hound. Logan, 101 Dalmatians. Sarah, Fox and the Hound. John, Bambi. Jen,
- 14:57Speaker 1: Fox and Hound. Alyssa, the Fox and the Hound. The
- 15:00Speaker 1: correct answer is the Fox and the Hound. Well done, Ruth.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Amos is the grumpy, gun-toting neighbor and antagonist of The
- 15:09Speaker 1: Fox and the Hound. He becomes the big bad of
- 15:12Speaker 1: the movie when he vows to kill a fox that
- 15:15Speaker 1: he spots near his hen house. As Amos says in
- 15:18Speaker 1: his song, he makes his living as a hunter and trapper.
- 15:22Speaker 1: His only singing happens during the four-verse tune called A Huntin' Man.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Here is Phil Taylor performing it. Take it away, Phil.
- 15:29Speaker 8: I ain't got no job. I'm a hunting man, and
- 15:32Speaker 8: I'd rather have a dog than a dollar. So let's
- 15:34Speaker 8: go banjo-ring-a-ling-a-ding-ho. Give a little hoot and a holler.
- 15:39Speaker 7: Wow.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Well done, Phil. Thanks, Phil. Thank you.
- 15:42Speaker 6: I never do a remake. That was beautiful. 50 years later.
- 15:45Speaker 8: It was the first movie that ever made me cry.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Wow.
- 15:48Speaker 6: It's a sad one.
- 15:50Speaker 1: It's a sad one.
- 15:50Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 15:51Speaker 1: I don't recall anything about it. What part was so touching?
- 15:55Speaker 8: I don't remember. I haven't watched it since I was
- 15:57Speaker 8: nine years old and I cried.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Wow. I didn't even know that when I asked you
- 16:00Speaker 1: to sing a Mrs. Song. Well done, Phil. Question for
- 16:03Speaker 1: the topic is gear. Bill Jordan founded this brand in 1986.
- 16:07Speaker 1: That's it?
- 16:11Speaker 2: That's it.
- 16:11Speaker 1: That's the whole question.
- 16:13Speaker 3: I was hoping for some more clues in there.
- 16:15Speaker 1: That's all you get. Bill Jordan founded this brand in 1986. Seth,
- 16:22Speaker 1: quick to answer. John, quick to answer.
- 16:25Speaker 6: Couple PA boys.
- 16:29Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 16:29Speaker 6: We knew this one for sure.
- 16:31Speaker 9: I have used this brand for a good majority of
- 16:37Speaker 9: my life.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Bill Jordan founded this brand in 1986.
- 16:42Speaker 6: Everyone had a sticker on their truck in high school.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 16:48Speaker 5: Keep going. Is it bigger or smaller than a loaf
- 16:54Speaker 5: of bread?
- 16:58Speaker 1: How would that help you?
- 17:00Speaker 6: John and I went to high schools that played each
- 17:02Speaker 6: other in sports.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Who was the better team?
- 17:06Speaker 6: Bald Eagle. Yeah, his for sure.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Seth's high school was the big brother and John's was
- 17:12Speaker 1: the little brother.
- 17:12Speaker 6: Pretty much. Absolutely.
- 17:16Speaker 1: Bill Jordan founded this brand in 1986. We're on question four.
- 17:29Speaker 3: No, it's a good guess though.
- 17:32Speaker 1: We're using all the context that John and Seth.
- 17:34Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, do you ever repeat answers but change
- 17:38Speaker 3: the question?
- 17:41Speaker 1: I'm not going to give you any hints here.
- 17:44Speaker 3: Answer that after though, because I'm curious if you just
- 17:46Speaker 3: change the clue.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Is everybody ready?
- 17:53Speaker 3: Yes.
- 17:53Speaker 1: Alyssa, do you have an answer?
- 17:54Speaker 2: I have two, but I'm.
- 17:58Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth says Realtree. Logan,
- 18:03Speaker 1: LL Bean, Sarah without an answer. John, Realtree. Jen without
- 18:06Speaker 1: an answer. Alyssa, Mossy Oak.
- 18:09Speaker 5: Close.
- 18:09Speaker 1: The correct answer is Realtree. Realtree started as one camo
- 18:15Speaker 1: pattern that Bill Jordan made to mimic the bark of Realtrees.
- 18:19Speaker 1: He then created the Realtree Outdoors TV show in the
- 18:23Speaker 1: early 90s, which is credited for establishing the modern format
- 18:27Speaker 1: hunting television it first aired on tnn the national network
- 18:32Speaker 1: and then got a spot on espn in the early
- 18:34Speaker 1: 2000s about to answer your question logan real tree it'd
- 18:38Speaker 1: be hard not to talk about them more than once
- 18:40Speaker 1: in like five years so real tree has been an
- 18:42Speaker 1: answer before it's been talked about in the show before
- 18:45Speaker 1: as has ll bean so uh it'll happen i run
- 18:48Speaker 1: to question five the topic is wildlife This is our
- 18:52Speaker 1: listener question of the week, which was won by David
- 18:55Speaker 1: Beck for sending this great question. David is going to
- 18:57Speaker 1: get a $ 150 First Light gift card. If you want
- 19:01Speaker 1: a chance to win the listener question of the week,
- 19:03Speaker 1: then send your question to trivia at themeateater.com. Black-capped, chestnut-backed, Carolina, mountain,
- 19:11Speaker 1: and boreal are all types of this nine-letter songbird. Black-capped. chestnut-backed, Carolina, mountain,
- 19:25Speaker 1: and boreal are all types of this nine-letter songbird. We
- 19:31Speaker 1: will get a scoreboard update from Phil Taylor after this.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Seth's got it. John, you got this one. Sarah, you
- 19:40Speaker 1: got this one.
- 19:41Speaker 2: Probably not.
- 19:41Speaker 3: Okay.
- 19:42Speaker 1: You got a nine-letter bird, though? Logan, do you have
- 19:45Speaker 1: this one?
- 19:45Speaker 3: I had an eight-letter bird, and then I made it
- 19:47Speaker 3: a nine-letter bird. Which that doesn't say much, because my
- 19:51Speaker 3: spelling's not the greatest.
- 19:53Speaker 8: It's called thinking outside the box.
- 19:54Speaker 6: Maybe.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Black-capped, chestnut-backed, Carolina, mountain, and boreal are all types of
- 20:02Speaker 1: this nine-letter song.
- 20:04Speaker 8: You just awakened some sort of memory for me, Spencer,
- 20:08Speaker 8: with that last question. Because when I used to work
- 20:09Speaker 8: in TV, one of the shows I worked on, Realtree
- 20:13Speaker 8: was like a sponsor.
- 20:15Speaker 6: Oh, cool.
- 20:16Speaker 8: And for years after I worked there, I would hear
- 20:19Speaker 8: the guy reading it in my head. And it would,
- 20:22Speaker 8: NRA All Access is brought to you by Bill Jordan's Realtree.
- 20:26Speaker 8: And I forgot about it until today. And now I'm
- 20:30Speaker 8: going to hear it in my sleep.
- 20:31Speaker 6: What was the show?
- 20:32Speaker 8: NRA All Access.
- 20:34Speaker 3: Oh.
- 20:35Speaker 1: I'm glad Phil got to edit NRA All Access.
- 20:38Speaker 4: Me too.
- 20:38Speaker 9: Good for him.
- 20:39Speaker 1: All right. Is everybody ready with a nine-letter songbird? Go
- 20:48Speaker 1: ahead and reveal your answers. Seth and Logan say Chickadee.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Sarah says Blackbird. John, Chickadee. Jen without an answer. Alyssa, Blackbird.
- 21:00Speaker 1: The correct answer is Chickadee. I'm sorry, Logan. We're going
- 21:05Speaker 1: to give you the point, but your spelling was not
- 21:07Speaker 1: even close. C-H-I-C-K-A-D-E-E. But we're going to give you the point.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Nailed it. Because chickadees don't migrate, they need to rely
- 21:20Speaker 1: on hidden caches of food during winter. To do this,
- 21:23Speaker 1: they grow new brain cells in the fall that allow
- 21:26Speaker 1: them to expand their memory. Chickadees are named after their
- 21:29Speaker 1: distinct alarm call that sounds like they're saying chicka-dee-dee-dee. Play it, Phil.
- 21:38Speaker 8: It's buffering, Spencer.
- 21:39Speaker 3: Oh, okay.
- 21:42Speaker 6: That's a great sound.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Chicka-dee-dee-dee-dee. That's how they got their name. Now you know
- 21:54Speaker 1: what that is when you're outside. All right, and now
- 21:56Speaker 1: it's time for our DraftKings question of the week. Thanks
- 22:00Speaker 1: to DraftKings, you get some bonus trivia in this week's episode.
- 22:04Speaker 1: This does not count towards your score. It's just for
- 22:06Speaker 1: bragging rights. Here's the question. The topic is hunting. Arkansas's
- 22:11Speaker 1: biggest college is represented by this mascot, which is a
- 22:15Speaker 1: nine-letter word for feral hog. Sarah had her answer before
- 22:24Speaker 1: I finished the question. The room looks like they're gonna
- 22:28Speaker 1: do well on this one. Arkansas's biggest college is represented
- 22:32Speaker 1: by this mascot, which is a nine-letter word for feral hog.
- 22:40Speaker 1: Just waiting on John down there to come up with
- 22:42Speaker 1: his answer for the DraftKings question of the week.
- 22:45Speaker 9: It's like, I don't know, for some reason, like, oh, wait,
- 22:49Speaker 9: hang on a second.
- 22:51Speaker 1: He's a Pennsylvania boy. He'll know this Arkansas stuff.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Can this one count if I get it right?
- 22:57Speaker 1: We'll see what Phil declares back there. We'll have a
- 23:00Speaker 1: scoreboard update coming soon.
- 23:01Speaker 6: I love how you just put it all on Phil.
- 23:04Speaker 8: I'll take the heat.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We've got Seth and
- 23:09Speaker 1: Logan and Sarah saying Razorback. John says the Arkansas Javelinas.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Jen and Alyssa say Razorback. The correct answer is Razorback.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Thanks again to DraftKings for the question of the week.

- 24:13Speaker 1: All right, Phil. Let's get that scoreboard update before we
- 24:19Speaker 1: do 6 through 10. Wow, Seth.
- 24:24Speaker 3: Perfect game.
- 24:25Speaker 8: I'm going to go backwards this time and say that
- 24:26Speaker 8: Seth has got a perfect game.
- 24:28Speaker 6: Five points.
- 24:28Speaker 1: He hasn't even talked about it. Rarely does a perfect
- 24:31Speaker 1: game make it to this point without someone letting us
- 24:33Speaker 1: know they have.
- 24:33Speaker 8: A perfect game. This is a group of modest, respectful
- 24:35Speaker 8: human beings.
- 24:36Speaker 6: I don't want to jinx myself.
- 24:38Speaker 8: Not usually the case. Right behind Seth is John with
- 24:42Speaker 8: three points, and we've got Logan and Sarah with two.
- 24:44Speaker 8: Jen and Alyssa have one.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Question six. The topic is fishing. This TV show holds
- 24:53Speaker 1: the Discovery Channel record for their longest running series of
- 24:57Speaker 1: all time. Seth looks like he's going to be six
- 25:04Speaker 1: for six. His whiteboard is down. The topic is fishing.
- 25:10Speaker 1: This TV show holds the Discovery Channel record for their
- 25:14Speaker 1: longest running series of all time. Sarah, Jen, and John
- 25:22Speaker 1: now locking in their answers. Logan doesn't watch enough Discovery Channel.
- 25:29Speaker 3: When I first read that question, I thought it was
- 25:31Speaker 3: Disney Channel.
- 25:32Speaker 8: I was like, why is it?
- 25:33Speaker 1: The second Disney Channel question.
- 25:35Speaker 8: Well, I think.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Discovery is owned by Disney, right? Okay, yes. This is
- 25:40Speaker 1: our second Disney question.
- 25:41Speaker 3: I read it as Disney for some reason, and I
- 25:43Speaker 3: was like, what, dude?
- 25:44Speaker 1: This TV show holds the Discovery Channel record for their
- 25:49Speaker 1: longest running series of all time. This is question six.
- 25:55Speaker 1: The topic is fishing. Alyssa now coming up with an answer. John,
- 26:03Speaker 1: we need you to keep pace with Seth here. Make
- 26:04Speaker 1: this an interesting game.
- 26:05Speaker 6: I'm going to try.
- 26:07Speaker 9: I'm going to try.
- 26:07Speaker 2: I think so.
- 26:08Speaker 5: Okay.
- 26:08Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 26:10Speaker 1: And wait for Alyssa to finish writing and then flip
- 26:12Speaker 1: over the whiteboard.
- 26:13Speaker 8: I think Discovery is actually Warner Brothers because it's a
- 26:15Speaker 8: part of that whole HBO when they added like a
- 26:17Speaker 8: bunch of TV, like HBO or Discovery shows to HBO.
- 26:22Speaker 6: So change your answer, Alyssa.
- 26:24Speaker 1: No. Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth says deadliest catch. Logan,
- 26:31Speaker 1: planet life. Sarah, deadliest catch. John, river monsters. Jen, deadliest catch.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Alyssa Crocodile Hunter. The correct answer is Deadliest Catch. Deadliest
- 26:44Speaker 1: Catch started in 2005 and aired their 22nd season earlier
- 26:49Speaker 1: this year. The show follows commercial crab fishermen working in
- 26:53Speaker 1: the Bering Sea. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics,
- 26:57Speaker 1: commercial fishing has the highest occupational fatality rate in America.
- 27:02Speaker 1: On the show's pilot, They say that it averages out
- 27:05Speaker 1: to one death per week during peak crabbing season with
- 27:09Speaker 1: an injury rate that's close to 100%. Question seven, the
- 27:15Speaker 1: topic is conservation. This next great question is via Austin White.
- 27:20Speaker 1: How many colors are on the fire danger today sign?
- 27:26Speaker 1: Is this the Austin White that used to work here?
- 27:29Speaker 1: I don't think it's that Austin White. I'm... They didn't
- 27:32Speaker 1: tell me otherwise. We can pretend it is. I don't know.
- 27:36Speaker 1: How many colors are on the fire danger today sign?
- 27:42Speaker 1: Seth Forestry boy over here came up with an answer
- 27:45Speaker 1: real quick.
- 27:48Speaker 6: Now I'm like.
- 27:52Speaker 5: Staring at the sign in my head.
- 27:57Speaker 1: How many colors are on the fire danger today sign?
- 28:07Speaker 6: We've all seen it. It's hard to not see it
- 28:11Speaker 6: in this state.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth
- 28:16Speaker 1: says four. Logan, four. Sarah, four. John, three. Jen, four. Alyssa, three.
- 28:25Speaker 1: The correct answer is none of those. It's five. Show
- 28:33Speaker 1: us the picture, Phil. From left to right, it is
- 28:36Speaker 1: green as low, blue as moderate, yellow as high, orange
- 28:42Speaker 1: as very high, and red as extreme. You can buy
- 28:45Speaker 1: your own sign from SmokeyZone.com with a one-sided version costing
- 28:50Speaker 1: $ 700 and a two-sided version that features a six-foot Smokey
- 28:55Speaker 1: costing $ 3, 000. Wow. If I had F you money, I'd
- 28:59Speaker 1: have multiple of those Smokey Bear.
- 29:01Speaker 8: Signs at my place.
- 29:03Speaker 2: Did everybody forget about the blue?
- 29:05Speaker 7: Yeah. Okay.
- 29:07Speaker 1: Low, moderate, high, very high, extreme. Dang it, Seth.
- 29:12Speaker 6: Yeah, I know.
- 29:12Speaker 1: Lost the $ 1, 000 donation. We're on to question eight. The
- 29:16Speaker 1: topic is public lands. What does OHV stand for? As
- 29:22Speaker 1: in an OHV trail. What does OHV stand for? as
- 29:34Speaker 1: in an O-H-V trail. The room is stumped. Seth has
- 29:44Speaker 1: now come up with an answer and he's the only one.
- 29:47Speaker 1: What does O H V stand for? This is question eight.
- 29:55Speaker 1: We'll get a scoreboard update from Phil after this. Could
- 30:05Speaker 1: be back-to-back zero percenters. Seth, how do you feel about
- 30:08Speaker 1: your answer?
- 30:09Speaker 6: Not great.
- 30:10Speaker 1: O-H-V.
- 30:13Speaker 3: While we're trying to answer this trivia question, what does
- 30:16Speaker 3: PA system stand for?
- 30:17Speaker 1: I have no idea.
- 30:21Speaker 6: I just recently learned this.
- 30:22Speaker 1: Public announcement?
- 30:24Speaker 3: Public address. At least that's what the internet told me.
- 30:29Speaker 1: I believe you. Why were you Googling that?
- 30:32Speaker 3: It's just one of those things that you think about,
- 30:34Speaker 3: but you never actually know what the acronym stands for.
- 30:37Speaker 3: Like this, I've seen that in so many places, but
- 30:39Speaker 3: I've never actually had to think about what it meant.
- 30:42Speaker 1: Someone told me the other day that Wi-Fi doesn't stand
- 30:44Speaker 1: for anything either. It's just Wi-Fi. I haven't checked in
- 30:49Speaker 1: on that. For now, we're trying to solve OHV, as
- 30:54Speaker 1: in an OHV trail. The room. The room is stumped.
- 31:09Speaker 1: Does everybody give up? O-H-V. Seth now going in for
- 31:16Speaker 1: a change. Is everybody ready? John doing some last second scribbling.
- 31:24Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth says on highway vehicle. Logan,
- 31:30Speaker 1: only high vehicles. Sarah, off-road Humvee vehicle. John, off-road hauling vehicle.
- 31:39Speaker 1: Jen without an answer. Alyssa without an answer. The correct
- 31:43Speaker 1: answer is off. Highway vehicle. Nobody got it. Seth was
- 31:50Speaker 1: two letters off of being right. He had on highway vehicle.
- 31:54Speaker 1: It's off highway vehicle, just the opposite. An OHV is
- 31:59Speaker 1: any motorized land vehicle that's predominantly used for recreational purposes
- 32:04Speaker 1: on unimproved trails. Examples are ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes, and
- 32:09Speaker 1: dune buggies. Utah has the most OHV trails with more
- 32:13Speaker 1: than 80,000 miles worth. All right, we're on to question nine,
- 32:17Speaker 1: but we're going to get a scoreboard update from Phil first.
- 32:21Speaker 2: Great.
- 32:24Speaker 8: Pretty similar spread from the last check-in. Seth's now got
- 32:27Speaker 8: six points. Sarah and John are tied behind him with three.
- 32:31Speaker 8: Logan and Jen with two, and Alyssa with one.
- 32:34Speaker 1: That means Seth has already wrapped up the victory.
- 32:38Speaker 6: Pressure's off.
- 32:38Speaker 1: We're on question nine. The topic is woodsmanship. The CDC
- 32:45Speaker 1: says that one of the most common symptoms of a
- 32:48Speaker 1: tick bite is a circular rash that looks like this
- 32:52Speaker 1: eight-letter word. Sarah's got this one. John and Seth, they
- 32:59Speaker 1: like their answers too. The CDC says that one of
- 33:03Speaker 1: the most common symptoms of a tick bite is is
- 33:06Speaker 1: a circular rash that looks like this eight-letter word. Jen,
- 33:11Speaker 1: do you have this one right?
- 33:12Speaker 2: Feeling kind of confident. We'll see.
- 33:14Speaker 1: Has anybody had a circular rash before that looks like
- 33:18Speaker 1: this thing? Okay. You PA boys, you somehow got out
- 33:23Speaker 1: of the state without getting a tick bite.
- 33:26Speaker 6: Oh, I've had plenty of those.
- 33:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I've had them on me. Just not the wrong
- 33:29Speaker 1: tick bite. Right.
- 33:31Speaker 6: Honestly, back in the day, I would never even look
- 33:33Speaker 6: for something like that. I can just pull ticks out
- 33:35Speaker 6: of myself left and right and just think it was
- 33:37Speaker 6: just another Tuesday.
- 33:38Speaker 1: You know? The CDC says that one of the most
- 33:42Speaker 1: common symptoms of a tick bite is a circular rash
- 33:46Speaker 1: that looks like this eight-letter word.
- 33:48Speaker 5: Is it all tick bites or just certain types of ticks?
- 33:51Speaker 1: I don't have the answer to that.
- 33:53Speaker 5: I have it linked to a very specific kind of tick.
- 33:57Speaker 6: Like a deer tick?
- 33:58Speaker 1: Yeah. I feel like some spider bites can throw a
- 34:01Speaker 1: similar look as this, but I think a lot of
- 34:04Speaker 1: people just associate.
- 34:05Speaker 3: Them with ticks.
- 34:07Speaker 5: I've heard them specifically connected to deer ticks.
- 34:09Speaker 7: I know.
- 34:09Speaker 2: I feel like I don't know if now I'm correct.
- 34:12Speaker 1: Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Set
- 34:18Speaker 1: says bullseye. Logan without an answer. Sarah, bullseye. John, ringworm. Jen, ringworm. Alyssa, ringworm.
- 34:27Speaker 1: The correct answer is bullseye. A bullseye-like rash occurs on 70%
- 34:34Speaker 1: of people who get Lyme disease. The rash typically shows
- 34:37Speaker 1: up between 3 and 30 days after a bite occurs,
- 34:41Speaker 1: and while it can be warm to the touch, it's
- 34:43Speaker 1: rarely itchy or painful. The unique circular pattern is a
- 34:47Speaker 1: result of your body's inflammatory reaction to the moving bacteria.
- 34:52Speaker 1: This represents the active battlefront where your immune system is
- 34:55Speaker 1: fighting off Lyme disease. All right, Phil, let's get one
- 34:58Speaker 1: more scoreboard update before question 10.
- 35:03Speaker 8: Like we discussed, Seth's got it locked up now. Sarah's
- 35:05Speaker 8: got four points. Keeping up behind him.
- 35:09Speaker 1: Seth could just double the correct answers of second place.
- 35:12Speaker 1: We'll see how he does. Here's a correct answer review.
- 35:15Speaker 1: One was Pawnee National Grassland. Two, Brisket. Three, The Fox
- 35:20Speaker 1: and the Hound. Four, Realtree. Five, Chickadee. Six, Deadliest Catch.
- 35:27Speaker 1: Seven was five colors, eight off-highway vehicle, nine bullseye. Here's
- 35:33Speaker 1: question 10. The topic is hunting. This rhyming term refers
- 35:38Speaker 1: to the spot on an elk's rack where the final
- 35:41Speaker 1: tine branches away from the tip of the main beam.
- 35:47Speaker 10: Yeah, Alyssa.
- 35:48Speaker 1: Alyssa's got it. John's got it. Seth's got it. This
- 35:53Speaker 1: rhyming term refers to the spot on an elk's rack
- 35:57Speaker 1: where the final tine branches away from the tip of
- 36:00Speaker 1: the main beam. John, does yours rhyme?
- 36:10Speaker 6: Yes.
- 36:11Speaker 1: Okay, Seth, does yours rhyme? Yeah. Alyssa, does yours rhyme? No. No,
- 36:17Speaker 1: she says.
- 36:18Speaker 2: Kind of.
- 36:20Speaker 1: You say it with an accent, maybe? This rhyming term.
- 36:25Speaker 1: refers to the spot on an elk's rack where the
- 36:28Speaker 1: final tine branches away from the tip of the main beam. Logan,
- 36:38Speaker 1: big elk hunter over there. Do you have this one right?
- 36:41Speaker 3: No, but I don't think about rack scoring or size
- 36:45Speaker 3: as much. I've yet to kill a bull elk, so
- 36:48Speaker 3: maybe once I do, I'll be able to answer this
- 36:50Speaker 3: question more appropriately.
- 36:51Speaker 6: Big B-tag guy.
- 36:53Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 36:53Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 36:54Speaker 6: Uh-huh.
- 36:55Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 36:56Speaker 3: Pretty stoked to have B tag.
- 36:58Speaker 7: Cool.
- 36:59Speaker 1: Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth
- 37:04Speaker 1: says whale tail. Logan, Brow, Sarah without an answer. John,
- 37:08Speaker 1: whale tail. Jen without an answer. Alyssa without an answer.
- 37:13Speaker 1: The correct answer is whale tail. The name refers to
- 37:18Speaker 1: the Y shape these points create that resemble the fluked
- 37:21Speaker 1: end of a whale's tail. Whale tail size is a
- 37:24Speaker 1: good indicator of bull maturity. Boone and Crockett says that's
- 37:28Speaker 1: an elk's fourth point. Boone and Crockett says that an
- 37:32Speaker 1: elk's fourth point, which would come below the whale tail
- 37:35Speaker 1: on a six by six, is almost always the longest tine.
- 37:39Speaker 1: This tine is referred to as the dagger, sword, or
- 37:43Speaker 1: royal tine. We're looking at a picture here of what
- 37:45Speaker 1: would be an elk's whale tail. That's the bull that
- 37:49Speaker 1: John shot a.
- 37:50Speaker 6: Couple weeks ago.
- 37:52Speaker 7: Oh, I wish.
- 37:52Speaker 1: Good Lord. All right, Seth is today's big winner. He
- 37:56Speaker 1: got eight correct answers, and I did think he doubled
- 38:00Speaker 1: up second place. Well done, Seth. Seth, what are you
- 38:03Speaker 1: going to do with that $ 500 donation?
- 38:06Speaker 6: So there's a Bassmaster Elite Series angler, Carl Jacobson. He's
- 38:10Speaker 6: been on the podcast before. He started a nonprofit called
- 38:14Speaker 6: Fear My Heart, and they organized these giant river and
- 38:20Speaker 6: stream and lake Okay. Where, you know, they get a
- 38:25Speaker 6: bunch of people together, and it's actually, like, worldwide. Like,
