- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, it's whatever, fifty some odd degrees outside and pouring rain,
- 0:06Speaker 1: it must mean it's baseball season, right or sort of
- 0:10Speaker 1: kind of something like that. Good afternoon, everybody, Welcome to
- 0:13Speaker 1: the program here on AM thirteen hundred the Zone. The
- 0:16Speaker 1: reason why I say baseball as we bring you the
- 0:18Speaker 1: program this afternoon from UFCU dish fog Field, home of
- 0:22Speaker 1: the Texas Long Runs. No, they're not playing a game today.
- 0:25Speaker 1: In fact, their home opener is exactly one week from
- 0:28Speaker 1: the day against the Houston Cougars. But their season opener
- 0:31Speaker 1: is Friday night up in Arlington at Globally Field, home
- 0:35Speaker 1: of the Texas Rangers, as part of the Shriner's College Challenge,
- 0:40Speaker 1: and they will be playing three opponents in three days.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Friday night against the Louisville Cardinals, Saturday evening against the
- 0:50Speaker 1: Old Miss Rebels. Yes, an SEC opponent, but it won't
- 0:52Speaker 1: count as a conference game. In fact, Texas and Old
- 0:55Speaker 1: Miss aren't even on the schedule against one another this year.
- 0:58Speaker 1: In SEC play Sunday evening against Oklahoma States. They have
- 1:02Speaker 1: three games that they will be playing Friday night, Saturday night,
- 1:06Speaker 1: and Sunday night. So today here at UFCU dish falk Field,
- 1:11Speaker 1: was Baseball Media Day, a chance for media come out
- 1:13Speaker 1: and visit with players. Head coach Jim Schlasnegel is meeting
- 1:18Speaker 1: with the media right now, and we'll have his comments
- 1:23Speaker 1: either later in the program or on tomorrow show.
- 1:27Speaker 2: We will hear from some long worn players.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Today, a couple of the newbies pitchers Jared Spencer, Rugeriojas.
- 1:34Speaker 2: We'll hear from a couple of those guys.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Also, we'll hear from Andre de Plantier, who is back
- 1:41Speaker 1: for another season. And we will also here from Will Gasparino,
- 1:46Speaker 1: long Worn's outfielder as well, So we'll hear from those
- 1:49Speaker 1: guys coming up this afternoon. We've got a lot of
- 1:51Speaker 1: things to get to on the program today. Among the topics, obviously,
- 1:56Speaker 1: there's a long worn basketball game tonight, and a big
- 1:59Speaker 1: one as Texas takes on the number two team in
- 2:04Speaker 1: the country, the Alabama Crimson Tide. And Texas really in
- 2:07Speaker 1: need of a win after dropping back to back games
- 2:10Speaker 1: to Arkansas at home last Tuesday and or last Wednesday,
- 2:15Speaker 1: and then on Saturday in Nashville against Vanderbilt. So they
- 2:19Speaker 1: drop both of those games and they do need a
- 2:22Speaker 1: win tonight. Will update things that are going on in
- 2:26Speaker 1: terms of the bracketological prognostications will do that, and we'll
- 2:31Speaker 1: have a closer look at this matchup with the Alabama
- 2:33Speaker 1: Crimson Tide. Also, we will take a look at pro
- 2:38Speaker 1: basketball the NBA. Now, I'm not sure how many of
- 2:44Speaker 1: you got a chance to watch either of two games
- 2:50Speaker 1: or both of two games, because they were separated by
- 2:52Speaker 1: a time frame. The Dallas Mavericks, for those of you
- 2:55Speaker 1: are Mavericks fans, had a home game against the Sacramento
- 3:00Speaker 1: Kings last night that went overtime.
- 3:02Speaker 2: The Kings ended up winning a one, nine eight in
- 3:05Speaker 2: overtime last night.
- 3:07Speaker 1: So it was that and then as as that game
- 3:12Speaker 1: went into overtime, and it was in the late stages
- 3:15Speaker 1: of things, and as it went into that, the other
- 3:18Speaker 1: thing that happened was the Los Angeles Lakers had a
- 3:23Speaker 1: home game against the Utah Jazz, and.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Of course that.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Game had a lot of hooplaw and attention surrounding it
- 3:35Speaker 1: with the Lakers debut of Luka Doncic in a Los
- 3:39Speaker 1: Angeles uniform, and it.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Was rather entertaining to watch.
- 3:43Speaker 1: There were times that that game for the Lakers to
- 3:46Speaker 1: be what they are, they're thirteen about five hundred and
- 3:48Speaker 1: so they are building things, but I don't think that
- 3:53Speaker 1: they were viewed, certainly going into the season as a
- 3:56Speaker 1: serious contender for the NBA title or even Western Conference
- 4:00Speaker 1: title or whatever. Now with Luke on it, I think
- 4:05Speaker 1: things will be different. And even though he still has
- 4:07Speaker 1: a ways to go in terms of developing his comfort
- 4:11Speaker 1: level in the Lakers system, he still had a very
- 4:17Speaker 1: productive game with LA last night, as did Lebron James.
- 4:21Speaker 1: The two seem to compliment each other well, they seem
- 4:23Speaker 1: to work together well, and we'll give you numbers and
- 4:25Speaker 1: stuff like that on down the line.
- 4:28Speaker 2: But there was.
- 4:31Speaker 1: The other thing that came to mind, and I read
- 4:33Speaker 1: some similar things about this today, was that many folks
- 4:39Speaker 1: thought it kind of gave the resemblance of the Showtime Lakers. Now,
- 4:44Speaker 1: you know, the Showtime Lakers had Magic and Kareem and
- 4:47Speaker 1: you know Michael Cooper and James Worthy and Byron Scott
- 4:51Speaker 1: and Norman Nixon before him and so on and so forth.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Kurt Rambus had all those guys that were part of
- 4:57Speaker 1: that part of that Lakers show Time era. And they
- 5:02Speaker 1: aren't to that, but they do have one of the
- 5:04Speaker 1: greatest players of all time in Lebron James. Minifield is
- 5:09Speaker 1: the greatest, certainly one of the greatest players of all time.
- 5:13Speaker 2: And then obviously now they have Luca so.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Who could in time become one of the greatest players
- 5:22Speaker 1: of all time in NBA history. And they kind of
- 5:25Speaker 1: played like it last night. They had seventy two points
- 5:27Speaker 1: in the first half of the game. Now you toss
- 5:30Speaker 1: in a complete rebuild, so it's going to take some
- 5:33Speaker 1: time for the Jazz to, you know, to build back
- 5:38Speaker 1: into a contender, but there's the belief that they will
- 5:40Speaker 1: probably get there. They've got good leadership, they've got from
- 5:43Speaker 1: a good front office, all.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Of those things, and we'll see.
- 5:47Speaker 1: But anyway, there'll be some thoughts on the Lakers where
- 5:52Speaker 1: they are, the Mavericks where they are, because it.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Was a pretty ugly scene.
- 5:55Speaker 1: As I rolled back to talking about the Mavericks, it
- 5:58Speaker 1: was a pretty ugly scene last night at the American
- 6:01Speaker 1: Airlines Center. If you were if you saw it, you'll
- 6:06Speaker 1: know what I'm talking about. But we'll recap it because
- 6:09Speaker 1: I'm actually putting it in inconceivable because as inconceivable as
- 6:16Speaker 1: it might seem that the Dallas Mavericks would trade away
- 6:20Speaker 1: Luka Dancic and watching the games last night. It at
- 6:26Speaker 1: times seemed a little bit surreal. I'm sure it did.
- 6:29Speaker 1: For what do they call them, mffls, mav fans for life.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Although that's taken the hit, there's a lot of people
- 6:36Speaker 1: say that that they should dump that because they've lost
- 6:38Speaker 1: fans by the scores left and right after this trade
- 6:43Speaker 1: toward that end was an example of it last night,
- 6:46Speaker 1: and how things have gotten ugly between the new ownership
- 6:51Speaker 1: and Mavericks fans, as demonstrated at American Airline Center last night.
- 6:56Speaker 1: We'll get into that a little bit later on. That'll
- 7:00Speaker 1: be in our Inconceivable segment, so we'll have that. In
- 7:05Speaker 1: women's college basketball, Texas continues on the uptick up to
- 7:09Speaker 1: number three, and they're going to go to Kentucky. They'll
- 7:12Speaker 1: leave tomorrow for the game that's on Thursday, and they're
- 7:14Speaker 1: going to play a Kentucky team that'll be angry, a
- 7:16Speaker 1: team that had had only one conference loss until last night.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Kentucky kind of fell apart down the stretch and All
- 7:24Speaker 1: Miss won the game in Oxford beat Kentucky, So now
- 7:28Speaker 1: Kentucky has two losses. There's a three way tie atop
- 7:32Speaker 1: the SEC women's standings between number three Texas, number four
- 7:36Speaker 1: South Carolina and number five LSU. All three teams are
- 7:41Speaker 1: ten and one in the league. And this week after
- 7:43Speaker 1: Texas has a difficult road test on Thursday night in
- 7:48Speaker 1: Lexington at Kentucky, they turn around, come home and play
- 7:51Speaker 1: fifth ranked.
- 7:51Speaker 2: LSU on Sunday afternoon.
- 7:54Speaker 1: This all coming after, of course, that huge win two
- 7:56Speaker 1: days ago when they beat South Carolina at Moody Center
- 8:00Speaker 1: to split the season series with the game Cocks. It
- 8:03Speaker 1: was very very big there, So we'll have some updated
- 8:06Speaker 1: things there on that as well, and as always we're
- 8:10Speaker 1: more than happy to take your questions, your thoughts, your
- 8:14Speaker 1: comments on it on our text line.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Our text line is there.
- 8:20Speaker 1: You have only to text the word Texas follow by
- 8:23Speaker 1: your question or comment to eight one five to three zero.
- 8:28Speaker 1: That's text the word Texas follow by your question or
- 8:31Speaker 1: comment to eight one five to three zero. Standard messaging
- 8:35Speaker 1: and data rates may apply. And if you want to
- 8:41Speaker 1: reach us on the talkback feature via the the brand
- 8:44Speaker 1: new and improved iHeartRadio app, if you don't already have
- 8:48Speaker 1: it downloaded on your phone, that's easy to do as well,
- 8:50Speaker 1: So you download that and then pull up a thirteen
- 8:54Speaker 1: under the zone. Once you pull that up, you'll see
- 8:57Speaker 1: two buttons. One is a white button in the shape
- 8:59Speaker 1: of line, a triangle or an arrow. That's if you
- 9:02Speaker 1: just want to listen to our regular programming that's going on.
- 9:06Speaker 1: But if you want to join in with a comment,
- 9:09Speaker 1: there's a little red button to the right of it
- 9:11Speaker 1: with a white microphone.
- 9:12Speaker 2: You push that button.
- 9:13Speaker 1: That's the talkback feature and you can actually leave us
- 9:16Speaker 1: a message of up to thirty seconds. So you can

- 9:26Speaker 1: a message on the talkback feature as well, So either
- 9:30Speaker 1: way is fine and we'll get you. I am curious
- 9:34Speaker 1: if there are Maverick fans, and I know there are
- 9:37Speaker 1: some Maverick fans in the here.
- 9:38Speaker 2: There's a lot of Spurs fans.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Obviously this is Spurs territory, so there you know, there's
- 9:45Speaker 1: a lot of a lot of Spurs fans out there
- 9:47Speaker 1: as well. So if you want to reach out and
- 9:51Speaker 1: and hit us with your feedback on that, feel freed.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Feel free to do that as well on the text
- 9:58Speaker 1: line or however. So we're glad to take that. So
- 10:01Speaker 1: a lot to get to on the program coming up.
- 10:04Speaker 1: We're gonna hear from Andre du Plantier, you know, who's
- 10:09Speaker 1: a veteran here now at the University of Texas, both
- 10:12Speaker 1: as a pitcher. He's been out there also as an infielder,
- 10:14Speaker 1: but mainly as a pitcher, and his thoughts on playing
- 10:18Speaker 1: for Jim Schlasnegel now and this new culture and the
- 10:22Speaker 1: new environment around the long worn baseball team. It's be
- 10:25Speaker 1: his fourth season in the Longhorn uniform. So we'll hear
- 10:27Speaker 1: from Andre du Plantier coming up. But we'll get to
- 10:30Speaker 1: your text, your questions as well, and a lot more
- 10:33Speaker 1: here on a cold, drippy, rainy Tuesday afternoon where at
- 10:38Speaker 1: UFCU dish fault Field, home of the Longhorn baseball team,
- 10:41Speaker 1: on their baseball media day. We'll get to all that
- 10:43Speaker 1: and more coming up here on sports Radio AM thirteen.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Hundred the zone. Cold wet, rainy Tuesday afternoon.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Good thing there isn't a baseball game schedule tonight here
- 10:53Speaker 1: at UFCU dish farg Field or this afternoon, and be
- 10:55Speaker 1: difficult to get this one in because of the cold weather,
- 10:58Speaker 1: but it was media day here and we'll get to
- 11:01Speaker 1: a conversation here in a moment. Well, one other baseball
- 11:04Speaker 1: notes This just came down just a little while ago.
- 11:09Speaker 1: The defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers have agreed
- 11:13Speaker 1: the terms on a new contract with Clayton Kershaw that's
- 11:16Speaker 1: going to bring him back to the Dodgers for an
- 11:18Speaker 1: eighteenth season. It is pending a physical. Kershaw turns thirty
- 11:22Speaker 1: seven next month. He had foot and knee surgeries back
- 11:26Speaker 1: in November after he was limited to just seven games
- 11:29Speaker 1: last season and did not pitch in the postseason. But
- 11:32Speaker 1: of course he's been really a mainstay in the Dodger rotation.
- 11:35Speaker 1: He has spent his entire major league career in Los Angeles.
- 11:39Speaker 1: He's only thirty two strikeout shy of reaching three thousand
- 11:42Speaker 1: for his career, and he had pitched on one year
- 11:46Speaker 1: contracts in twenty twenty two and twenty twenty three.
- 11:50Speaker 2: He did sign an incentive.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Laden deal for last year, a five million dollar deal
- 11:55Speaker 1: that included an option for ten million, but he declined
- 11:59Speaker 1: that and with the insis he did pick up seven
- 12:01Speaker 1: and a half million. So he has agreed to terms
- 12:04Speaker 1: pending on physical on the outcome of that physical, on
- 12:07Speaker 1: a new contract with LA that We'll have some other
- 12:10Speaker 1: Major League Baseball notes coming up but about this long
- 12:12Speaker 1: worn baseball team as they start to put things together
- 12:18Speaker 1: for the twenty twenty five season. This team, as you
- 12:21Speaker 1: would imagine, is going to have a lot of brand
- 12:24Speaker 1: new to it, new faces, not only with real young
- 12:27Speaker 1: faces like freshmen, but also through the portal. And we're
- 12:31Speaker 1: going to hear from a couple of those guys a
- 12:32Speaker 1: little bit later on, some attorneys and some real veterans
- 12:37Speaker 1: wh've been here, like Andre Duplantier, who technically is a
- 12:42Speaker 1: six year senior. He redshirted it in twenty twenty one,
- 12:45Speaker 1: remembered as a true freshman in twenty twenty. They only
- 12:49Speaker 1: played seventeen games that year because of the shutdown due
- 12:52Speaker 1: to the pandemic. They had started at fourteen and three,
- 12:54Speaker 1: and he had appeared in a few ballgames that year,
- 12:58Speaker 1: so he's actually in his sixth year in the program.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Last year as a red shirted junior, in twenty nine appearances,
- 13:06Speaker 1: he was two and two with a three point nine ERA.
- 13:08Speaker 1: He had three saves, he had fifty three strikeouts of
- 13:12Speaker 1: our forty three innings, and opposing hitters hit one ninety
- 13:15Speaker 1: two against him. And of course he has had to
- 13:18Speaker 1: battle the injury bug during his career.
- 13:21Speaker 2: As well.
- 13:21Speaker 1: But here he is back for his sixth year in
- 13:25Speaker 1: a long worn baseball uniform, in the first under new
- 13:28Speaker 1: head coach Jim Schloasnegele. And that was part of what
- 13:31Speaker 1: the conversation was all about, just a little bit of
- 13:33Speaker 1: go the media availability with the Longhorn sixt years senior
- 13:37Speaker 1: right hander Andre de Plantier Junior.
- 13:42Speaker 3: We've got right handed pitcher and Andre to plenty At
- 13:44Speaker 3: a second, well jumps trading to questions Stip Lovely an
- 13:46Speaker 3: absolutely nak.
- 13:47Speaker 4: But there we go, Gray, Why did you decide to
- 13:50Speaker 4: come back for another season?
- 13:53Speaker 5: It's hard not to want to be a Longhorn.
- 13:57Speaker 6: And then the opportunity present itself with the new coaching
- 14:01Speaker 6: staff and didn't look back and went for it.
- 14:04Speaker 7: What were those conversations like with the new staff as
- 14:06Speaker 7: we were trying to pick.
- 14:07Speaker 8: Up your mind?
- 14:09Speaker 2: Uh, they were just.
- 14:12Speaker 6: They they they reassured that they'd be able to help me, uh,
- 14:18Speaker 6: help the help the team.
- 14:20Speaker 5: Uh. They they thought I could be a big part
- 14:23Speaker 5: of that, and I was. I was bought in from
- 14:25Speaker 5: the drunk there.
- 14:27Speaker 9: You're realg on this team.
- 14:30Speaker 8: What does it mean to have a have schlatsnangle here?
- 14:33Speaker 2: You know, just twenty years since.
- 14:34Speaker 4: You guys won a national championship.
- 14:36Speaker 10: This is a guy that lives in Omaha.
- 14:37Speaker 5: Basically, Uh, it's a it's a blessing.
- 14:43Speaker 6: I'm grateful for, you know, the last staff getting me
- 14:47Speaker 6: here and what they were able to do. But to
- 14:50Speaker 6: be able to hang around for six years and experience
- 14:53Speaker 6: some of this change with the new staff and Slash
- 14:57Speaker 6: and what he's been able to do. Like, I'm just
- 15:01Speaker 6: so grateful for what he brings, what he brings.
- 15:05Speaker 5: Cause it's a different it's a different perspective.
- 15:07Speaker 8: What what did What'd you seen a lot about that?
- 15:10Speaker 5: What?
- 15:10Speaker 10: What does he bring? Do you think it's different? The culture?
- 15:16Speaker 10: You know it?
- 15:16Speaker 6: It's I definitely like we re sparked s that that
- 15:20Speaker 6: energy in in certain areas that that we needed and
- 15:23Speaker 6: it's just been great team bonding the whole time.
- 15:26Speaker 3: You've seen a lot of these shops in Arlington and
- 15:29Speaker 3: maybe some struggles you guys have had in nine years
- 15:31Speaker 3: past in that stadium. How do you view this to
- 15:33Speaker 3: start the season now as a re any scar tissue
- 15:35Speaker 3: from over years past.
- 15:37Speaker 6: We get to go one for one, well, game one,
- 15:40Speaker 6: we get to go one for one. We're not We're
- 15:42Speaker 6: not looking to go whatever number for whatever number. We
- 15:46Speaker 6: got one for one and they'll wake up the next
- 15:48Speaker 6: thing and go one.
- 15:49Speaker 5: For one tree.
- 15:50Speaker 10: What's it him like?
- 15:50Speaker 2: Working with Max?
- 15:53Speaker 5: Incredible. I could go on and on about that, but
- 16:00Speaker 5: what we've been able to.
- 16:01Speaker 6: Do as a staff, I'm grateful to be a part
- 16:04Speaker 6: of this group.
- 16:05Speaker 7: Well, I want you on and on, but maybe what's
- 16:07Speaker 7: one thing that stands up that's incredible.
- 16:09Speaker 6: About, something that's right on top of my mine right now,
- 16:13Speaker 6: is just dominate his own It's it's something we talk
- 16:16Speaker 6: about daily and that's what you'll see from all of
- 16:20Speaker 6: our guys.
- 16:20Speaker 10: What does it mean though, to dominate the league and fun? Smile? Yeah,
- 16:32Speaker 10: you know, there's a lot of things with that.
- 16:34Speaker 6: I won't I will say that on the camera, you know,
- 16:37Speaker 6: but we're gonna we're gonna have fun.
- 16:39Speaker 9: We're gonna play the game the best way you know
- 16:41Speaker 9: how to and smile.
- 16:43Speaker 8: A couple weeks.
- 16:44Speaker 11: Ago, Jalen said that you had a bunch of guys
- 16:46Speaker 11: kind of over your place and he was doing burgers,
- 16:49Speaker 11: you were doing wings.
- 16:50Speaker 10: Purss off, how are your wings?
- 16:51Speaker 11: And then secondly, how important was it for you older
- 16:54Speaker 11: guys you bet to kind of bring these new guys
- 16:56Speaker 11: in and kind of get everyone together.
- 16:57Speaker 6: Yes, that was fun. Chef jFlow, he did whip up
- 17:02Speaker 6: some good burgers. That's where un kind of became a name. Uh,
- 17:07Speaker 6: she's just whipping up those wings. I say, they're they're
- 17:09Speaker 6: a plus wings. Anyone's welcome to try those. But yeah,
- 17:15Speaker 6: that's that's always been something that's important to me. Like
- 17:19Speaker 6: when I got here as a freshman, the older guys
- 17:21Speaker 6: took us in. And whenever you come into a place
- 17:24Speaker 6: like Texas, when whenever the older guys can make you
- 17:27Speaker 6: feel like this is your home from from the jump,
- 17:30Speaker 6: that meant a lot to me when I was young.
- 17:32Speaker 6: So talking with some of the older players about that,
- 17:36Speaker 6: like let's let's just have some food, get with the guys, Like,
- 17:39Speaker 6: I know what that did for me. And it's been
- 17:42Speaker 6: good to keep just a team bonding going.
- 17:45Speaker 12: Playing baseball with your brother at the University of Texas.
- 17:49Speaker 8: I mean obviously as kids, y'all played together.
- 17:52Speaker 11: But then to be able to chase your dreams and
- 17:54Speaker 11: come to the University of Texas, what's that.
- 17:56Speaker 9: Been Like I view it like everything happens for a reason.
- 18:03Speaker 5: We've been able to go through ups and downs together.
- 18:06Speaker 10: Uh, be on the same team.
- 18:09Speaker 5: Uh, it's just it's just good like.
- 18:11Speaker 6: Uh, I can't I can't complain about that being on
- 18:13Speaker 6: the same team together.
- 18:14Speaker 8: During this team. This program's from built on pitching. You know,
- 18:18Speaker 8: staff had a Y or a O before last year.
- 18:21Speaker 8: Do you ever like the pitching as kind of the dominant
- 18:23Speaker 8: part of the program that's slipped a little bit? You'll
- 18:25Speaker 8: put that way. As a staff.
- 18:29Speaker 10: I it was it was tough.
- 18:30Speaker 6: Uh, but at at the end of the day, Uh,
- 18:35Speaker 6: the Longhorns win and loose, so we're not losing a
- 18:40Speaker 6: game and saying that it was one side of the ball.
- 18:42Speaker 6: We we all understand that by the time the scoreboard's done,
- 18:46Speaker 6: it's the long Horns win or loose.
- 18:49Speaker 8: What was the flavor of wings?
- 18:51Speaker 6: Oh we had we had some lemon pepper, and then
- 18:55Speaker 6: we just had the signature.
- 18:56Speaker 5: Uh, you have to try it, you know, bring the Yeah, yeah,
- 19:01Speaker 5: I gets you, right, I guess you're right.
- 19:02Speaker 8: Future entrepreneur.
- 19:04Speaker 9: You know, maybe maybe maybe any any of the newcomers
- 19:10Speaker 9: that jump out of you, they're.
- 19:12Speaker 8: Gonna make a big splash this year.
- 19:14Speaker 6: Wow, pitching all of them. You know, we we brought in,
- 19:18Speaker 6: we brought in a lot of people. You know, there's
- 19:23Speaker 6: let's say, Drew, great guy. Everyone I'm thinking of It's
- 19:27Speaker 6: just is just a great human everybody. Drew Hayes around
- 19:29Speaker 6: with Bryce, you know, Connor.
- 19:32Speaker 5: I could go on and on and on.
- 19:33Speaker 6: But I'm so excited for everyone who we brought in
- 19:37Speaker 6: because they're really good players.
- 19:42Speaker 8: Thank you. Right.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Conversation with Andre Duplantier, the second who's now a sixty
- 19:49Speaker 1: year senior on that long warn baseball team, and he
- 19:52Speaker 1: talked about Max we are the new pitching coach and
- 19:54Speaker 1: what a what a difference he's.
- 19:56Speaker 2: Made with the stuff.
- 19:57Speaker 1: You're gonna hear that from a couple of the other
- 19:59Speaker 1: pitchers that we're going to hear from this afternoon on
- 20:02Speaker 1: the program. But by and large, that's been the universal conversation.
- 20:06Speaker 1: And these are guys coming from different backgrounds. Of course,
- 20:09Speaker 1: Duplantier is, as I mentioned, a six year senior, so
- 20:12Speaker 1: he's a returning veteran. But some of a couple of
- 20:15Speaker 1: the other guys you're going to hear from Ruga Riojas
- 20:18Speaker 1: a transfer, Jared Spencer a transfer. Those are guys that
- 20:22Speaker 1: are coming into the program for the first time, and
- 20:25Speaker 1: yet across the board, all of them are in unanimity
- 20:30Speaker 1: and talking about the impact that Wiener has made on
- 20:35Speaker 1: this on this pitching staff, and I'm sure we'll hear
- 20:38Speaker 1: Jim Schlosnegle talk about it and other players as well
- 20:41Speaker 1: in the coming days leading up to the season opener
- 20:43Speaker 1: on Friday night at Globelife Field against Louisville. So it'll
- 20:47Speaker 1: it'll uh, that'll be a big part of it as well.
- 20:50Speaker 1: And we'll also hear from Will Gasparino this afternoon and
- 20:55Speaker 1: talking about it. So there's some some conversation from some
- 20:59Speaker 1: Longhorn from one of the Longhorn pictures.
- 21:01Speaker 2: Andre to Plante there hoping for good things out of him.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Of course, he had to be shut down and had
- 21:06Speaker 1: Tommy John surgery when he went through that in twenty
- 21:09Speaker 1: twenty one and was red shirted and had some great
- 21:13Speaker 1: moments like that in the regional in Miami, and had
- 21:16Speaker 1: some good moments last year where he had a couple
- 21:19Speaker 1: of multi inning saves for Texas, and they're going to
- 21:22Speaker 1: need him as well as the other guys who are
- 21:24Speaker 1: a big part of that all right, coming up next.
- 21:27Speaker 1: It would be well inconceivable in the minds of some
- 21:30Speaker 1: Mavericks fans that think their world has turned upside down.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Like this, and that the new ownership has turned on
- 21:36Speaker 1: them as well. You'll hear all of that and more
- 21:38Speaker 1: coming up here on a Tuesday afternoon on Sports Radio
- 21:41Speaker 1: AM thirteen under the Zone in the iHeartRadio app.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Glad to have you with us here this afternoon. My
- 21:46Speaker 2: name is Craig Waite.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Thanks to Havings Ronald Savage producer this afternoon in the studio.
- 21:52Speaker 1: Cameron Parker, regular producer, will be back into Mark Cam
- 21:54Speaker 1: will be with me tonight across the freeway from where
- 21:57Speaker 1: we are right now at Moody Center. Tonight is Texas
- 22:01Speaker 1: will take on Alabama. More on that in a moment.
- 22:05Speaker 1: I feel compelled because I'm here in the ballpark in
- 22:09Speaker 1: the radio booth, which I always enjoy spending so much
- 22:11Speaker 1: time up here during the course of the season, and
- 22:14Speaker 1: I do always feel compelled whenever there is a ballgame here,
- 22:19Speaker 1: especially if it's a later in the day start, whether
- 22:23Speaker 1: it's late afternoon or early evening, because when I look
- 22:27Speaker 1: over to my left, I look at the upper deck
- 22:29Speaker 1: of I thirty five invariably, especially in the late afternoon starts,
- 22:34Speaker 1: the upper deck of I thirty five and you have
- 22:36Speaker 1: a bird's eye view of it. From where we are
- 22:38Speaker 1: in the broadcast booth is usually a parking lot by
- 22:42Speaker 1: late afternoon.
- 22:43Speaker 2: It is actually moving at.
- 22:45Speaker 1: A relative pace.
- 22:49Speaker 2: I mean it's it's moving. Put it that way.
- 22:52Speaker 1: It's slow, but it is moving, as opposed to a
- 22:54Speaker 1: lot of times when I look over there and it's
- 22:57Speaker 1: just gridlocked or just bare early crawling on.
- 23:01Speaker 2: They're doing more than crawling. You're moving.
- 23:03Speaker 1: I'd say, eh, twenty twenty five miles an hour, maybe
- 23:08Speaker 1: something like that. But I always feel compelled to say,
- 23:10Speaker 1: whenever I'm doing a ballgame here that be careful there
- 23:14Speaker 1: on that upper deck of I thirty five for those
- 23:15Speaker 1: of you listening on your drive home or wherever you're headed,
- 23:19Speaker 1: but to be a little bit careful, and especially on
- 23:21Speaker 1: the day like this because it is raining, but we're
- 23:24Speaker 1: here at the ballpark because today was Texas Baseball Media Day.
- 23:30Speaker 1: The Longhorns open the season Friday evening in Arlington as
- 23:35Speaker 1: they'll take on the Louisville Cardinals in the Shriners College
- 23:41Speaker 1: Baseball Challenge. That is Friday evening scheduled for seven o'clock
- 23:46Speaker 1: first pitch, and Keith Morrelan will join me for the
- 23:48Speaker 1: game broadcast of that on Friday night as Texas will
- 23:52Speaker 1: take on the Louisville Cardinals. They'll play Louisville Friday, they'll
- 23:55Speaker 1: play Ole Miss on Saturday, and Oklahoma State on Sunday.
- 23:59Speaker 1: By the way, you probably if I just give it
- 24:02Speaker 1: a little more boost, you can probably really hear it there.
- 24:04Speaker 1: It is, Yes, siren's there because something's happened. It looks
- 24:08Speaker 1: like it's on the lower deck there. So ambulance and
- 24:14Speaker 1: MS and you know, first responders on their way. Hopefully
- 24:18Speaker 1: everybody's okay there. But so that's so. They had Texas
- 24:23Speaker 1: Baseball Media Day today and we heard from Andre to Planti,
- 24:26Speaker 1: the second in the first hour of the program. Coming
- 24:29Speaker 1: up with a few minutes, we'll hear from another one
- 24:32Speaker 1: of those longhorned pitchers, left handed, Jared Spencer, the transfer
- 24:35Speaker 1: from Indiana State, and we'll hear from him coming up
- 24:39Speaker 1: here in just a few moments. We will also before
- 24:41Speaker 1: the program's done this afternoon here from Ruger Riojas transfer
- 24:47Speaker 1: in and we'll hear from Will Gasparino, a long Ward's
- 24:50Speaker 1: outfielder as well. So we'll hear from from those guys
- 24:54Speaker 1: this afternoon. So we'll look forward to bringing you those
- 24:56Speaker 1: conversations coming up here. Also, as I mentioned, our text
- 25:03Speaker 1: line is open.
- 25:04Speaker 2: If you have a question.
- 25:05Speaker 1: We're happy to avail ourselves of your questions, your thoughts,
- 25:11Speaker 1: your comments. It's really easy to reach us. All you
- 25:15Speaker 1: have to do is you text the word texas follow
- 25:22Speaker 1: your question of comments to eight one five to three zero.
- 25:28Speaker 1: You text the word texas followed by your question or
- 25:30Speaker 1: comment to eight one five three zero. Standard messaging and
- 25:33Speaker 1: data rates may apply. Somebody texted us and asked, and
- 25:39Speaker 1: this is a good question, wanted to know when are
- 25:44Speaker 1: the media timeouts in women's basketball. It's a fair question because,
- 25:50Speaker 1: as you know, women's basketball has different timing than the men. Yes,
- 25:54Speaker 1: they play forty minutes, just like the men, but unlike
- 25:56Speaker 1: the men, the women play four to ten minutes at quarters.
- 26:00Speaker 1: They don't play two to twenty minute halves. They play
- 26:04Speaker 1: four minutes four to ten minute quarters. And for those
- 26:07Speaker 1: folks that well, what's the difference, it's still it's It's
- 26:09Speaker 1: kind of like what my parents used to say when
- 26:11Speaker 1: we were, you know, eating, and I did I didn't
- 26:14Speaker 1: want my peas mixed up with my mashed potatoes, and
- 26:16Speaker 1: they would say, what differences and make it's all going
- 26:18Speaker 1: to the same place. But there is a difference. There's
- 26:22Speaker 1: a difference in the way the fouls are adjudicated.
- 26:28Speaker 2: In the men's game. Of course, when you get to.
- 26:30Speaker 1: The seventh team foul and a half, there's a one
- 26:32Speaker 1: in one that follows on the seventh, eighth, and nineteen fouls.
- 26:37Speaker 1: If they're not shooting fouls, if they're just common fouls,
- 26:40Speaker 1: loose ball fouls, defensive fouls that aren't in the act
- 26:43Speaker 1: of shooting, or if they're not offensive fouls, then it's
- 26:48Speaker 1: a one in one. However, on the tenth foul, then
- 26:51Speaker 1: you're shooting two free throws. Well, in the women's game,
- 26:54Speaker 1: they have done away with the one in one. There
- 26:56Speaker 1: are five fouls per quarter, and when you get to
- 26:59Speaker 1: the fifth foulw the offended team walking to the free
- 27:04Speaker 1: throw line has two free throws, so there's no one
- 27:07Speaker 1: in one. In the women's game, it's five fouls per quarter.
- 27:12Speaker 1: And what I discovered is that the game actually makes
- 27:16Speaker 1: for a little faster pace, a little quicker pace. Sometimes
- 27:20Speaker 1: there are more fouls involved. That was the case in
- 27:23Speaker 1: the first quarter of the Texas South Carolina game the
- 27:25Speaker 1: other day. There was a lot of conversation about that,
- 27:29Speaker 1: but by and large it moves a little quicker, the
- 27:33Speaker 1: pacing moves a little bit quicker on that. Now, as
- 27:36Speaker 1: to the timeouts, as you know, in the men's game,
- 27:38Speaker 1: it's at the under fours, the timeout at the first
- 27:43Speaker 1: dead ball at or below sixteen minutes, the sixteen minute
- 27:46Speaker 1: mark and a half, the twelve minute mark, the under eight,
- 27:50Speaker 1: and the under four, So the first dead ball from
- 27:53Speaker 1: the sixteen minute mark or below is a media timeout.
- 27:58Speaker 1: Then at the twelve minute markable the eight minute market
- 28:01Speaker 1: below or the four minute market below, a team can
- 28:04Speaker 1: call a thirty second timeout that does not carry over
- 28:07Speaker 1: to the second half. If it's inside of the window
- 28:10Speaker 1: inside of thirty seconds to the full media timeout, they
- 28:13Speaker 1: go ahead and just take that as the full media timeout.
- 28:17Speaker 1: The women's game, it's a little bit different their timeout.
- 28:21Speaker 1: The media timeouts are at the under five halfway mark
- 28:24Speaker 1: of each quarter. However, called timeouts, especially the first call
- 28:30Speaker 1: timeout on the second half, like with the men, is
- 28:34Speaker 1: then utilized as a full timeout, a full timeout when
- 28:39Speaker 1: it's called, but it's mainly at the five minute mark
- 28:43Speaker 1: of the first, second, third, and fourth quarters and then
- 28:45Speaker 1: additional timeouts that are called.
- 28:47Speaker 2: So hopefully that answers the question for you there a
- 28:50Speaker 2: little bit, all right.
- 28:51Speaker 1: I wanted to get to the men thing here before
- 28:53Speaker 1: we get to the break. Of course, the Texas men
- 28:55Speaker 1: play Alabama the night number two Alabama this evening at
- 28:58Speaker 1: Moody Center, and you can hear the contest or right
- 29:04Speaker 1: here on AM thirteen under the Zone. You can hear
- 29:08Speaker 1: it seven thirty air time, eight o'clock tip. It's also
- 29:12Speaker 1: available on ninety eight point one Fmkvett and one O
- 29:14Speaker 1: three point one FM, Austin's eighty station. So however you
- 29:18Speaker 1: used to listening to us in town, all those signals,
- 29:23Speaker 1: all three of those signals are available tonight here on
- 29:26Speaker 1: the Zone and then also on ninety eight one Cavett
- 29:31Speaker 1: and also on one O three to one. They're playing
- 29:35Speaker 1: the number two team in the country. It's a really
- 29:37Speaker 1: good team. What's really interesting is that the number one
- 29:41Speaker 1: team in the country is still Auburn despite the loss
- 29:43Speaker 1: of the weekend and Alabama's number two. You've got Iron
- 29:47Speaker 1: Bowl basketball happening this Saturday in Tuscaloos. In fact, the
- 29:50Speaker 1: ESPN College Game Day is going to be for it
- 29:52Speaker 1: there for that, but Alabama's game before that is the
- 29:55Speaker 1: one tonight, and Texas will have to deal with their
- 29:59Speaker 1: outstanding guard, Mark.
- 30:00Speaker 2: Sears, who's their leading scorer.
- 30:02Speaker 1: He averages eighteen points per game, he averages five assists,
- 30:06Speaker 1: can just scoot through a defense, outstanding shooter, all of
- 30:10Speaker 1: those things, so they'll have to deal with that as
- 30:15Speaker 1: well as the two guard. The grad transfer Chris young
- 30:18Speaker 1: Blood is good. Grant Nelson, their six to eleven grad
- 30:23Speaker 1: transfer forward who had come in from North Dakota State
- 30:26Speaker 1: who averages thirteen points and eight boards.
- 30:29Speaker 2: Some of the parts really big.
- 30:30Speaker 1: They've got two guys who averaged double digit scoring coming
- 30:33Speaker 1: off the bench, including an Auburn transfer in Aiden Holloway.
- 30:36Speaker 2: So the long words are gonna have to deal with that.
- 30:39Speaker 2: We could see a little.
- 30:40Speaker 1: Bit different look in the lineup tonight, Julian Larry perhaps
- 30:44Speaker 1: instead of Jordan Pope going at the guard spot. Tremon
- 30:46Speaker 1: Mark is going to be back in the lineup tonight.
- 30:49Speaker 1: He couldn't play Saturday in the game at Vanderbilt dude
- 30:52Speaker 1: to banged up shoulder. But Tremon Mark will be back
- 30:56Speaker 1: on the floor. Of course, Trey Johnson will start, Cayden
- 30:58Speaker 1: Schderick will start, Arthur Klowe will start tonight, and the
- 31:02Speaker 1: Loghorns are gonna have to shoot a good percentage and
- 31:04Speaker 1: they're going to have to defend well to have a
- 31:05Speaker 1: chance to win this basketball game for the Loghorns. We
- 31:12Speaker 1: were talking a little bit about it yesterday because Jerry
- 31:16Speaker 1: Palm one of the two bracketologists, he's the one from
- 31:19Speaker 1: CBS Sports Line. He has the log Horns in Dayton,
- 31:22Speaker 1: Ohio playing in the play in in the first four,
- 31:25Speaker 1: playing Georgia in fact, and there is a provision in
- 31:28Speaker 1: the NCAA tournament rules that do allow two conference teams
- 31:32Speaker 1: to meet in the first four if it works out
- 31:35Speaker 1: that way.
- 31:35Speaker 2: And he has it listed that way.
- 31:38Speaker 1: Joe Lnardi, of course, is really the highly acclaimed bracketologist
- 31:43Speaker 1: and who is right in that ninety six, ninety seven,
- 31:47Speaker 1: ninety eight percent pile every year and getting the teams
- 31:50Speaker 1: down and usually gets some really close within their seed line.
- 31:53Speaker 1: He has Texas still in the field, and he does
- 31:56Speaker 1: not have Texas in Dayton, but he does have them
- 32:00Speaker 1: listed of what he calls last four byes, meaning the
- 32:05Speaker 1: last four teams that don't have to play in Dayton,
- 32:09Speaker 1: and the other three teams are Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Vanderbilt.
- 32:15Speaker 2: Because of Vanderbilts went over Texas.
- 32:17Speaker 1: His last four inn are Georgia, San Diego, State, Wake Forest,
- 32:22Speaker 1: and BYU. First four out Arkansas, VCU, North Carolina and
- 32:28Speaker 1: SMU and the next four out Pittsburgh, Xavier, UC, San
- 32:33Speaker 1: Diego and Boise State.
- 32:35Speaker 2: Those are the next ones you've got.
- 32:37Speaker 1: Now, this this was as of this morning, and as
- 32:40Speaker 1: of this morning, Joe Lenardi has Texas in the field
- 32:45Speaker 1: in Cleveland as the number ten seed playing Louisville, and
- 32:49Speaker 1: if they were to win that game, according to Lenardi,
- 32:53Speaker 1: they'd have to play Florida in the second round. See
- 32:56Speaker 1: and again, there's a provision in the NCAA tournament that
- 33:01Speaker 1: allows conference teams to play as early as the second
- 33:03Speaker 1: round if there are more than eight teams that make
- 33:08Speaker 1: the tournament. Well, he's got thirteen teams projected from the
- 33:12Speaker 1: Southeastern Conference to be in the NCAA Tournament.
- 33:14Speaker 2: Texas included the four.
- 33:15Speaker 1: Number ones Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee and Duke, three of the
- 33:19Speaker 1: four being out of the SEC. The four number twos
- 33:24Speaker 1: that he has are Houston, Purdue, Texas, A and m
- 33:29Speaker 1: another SEC, and Florida another SEC. The four number threes
- 33:35Speaker 1: that he has projected are Michigan State, Iowa State, Arizona,
- 33:40Speaker 1: and Texas Tech and the four number four seeds Saint John's, Kansas, Wisconsin,
- 33:47Speaker 1: and Kentucky. Another SEC school in Kentucky, of course, will
- 33:50Speaker 1: be here in Austin on Saturday to take on the
- 33:53Speaker 1: Long Horns on Saturday. So there's a look at the
- 33:56Speaker 1: bracketology just to give you an idea of where Tech
- 33:59Speaker 1: is is right now and how important these games are.
- 34:01Speaker 1: Even if they were to lose tonight against the number
- 34:04Speaker 1: two team in the country, it's not going to really
- 34:07Speaker 1: do devastating damage to their net ranking, but they're going
- 34:11Speaker 1: to have to perform well in one of these games
- 34:13Speaker 1: coming up against the ranked opponent, be it Alabama or Kentucky,
- 34:18Speaker 1: and then the games that follow in the coming days,
- 34:21Speaker 1: and we'll talk more about that in the coming days.
- 34:24Speaker 1: Up next, we shift back to baseball. Let you hear
- 34:26Speaker 1: from Jared Spencer, Longhorn transfer left handed pitcher. That's next
- 34:30Speaker 1: when we continue here on Texas Baseball Media Day from
- 34:33Speaker 1: UFCU Dishfault Field on AM thirteen under the Zone, and
- 34:36Speaker 1: we're talking Longhorn baseball among other ut related things. We
- 34:40Speaker 1: were just finished talking about men's basketball. We've hit on
- 34:43Speaker 1: women's basketball as well. This afternoon Texas women will play
- 34:48Speaker 1: Thursday night in Lexington against eighth rank Kentucky. They're ranked eighth,
- 34:52Speaker 1: and they will be ranked eighth going into the game,
- 34:54Speaker 1: even though they did.
- 34:55Speaker 2: Lose last night to Ole Miss.
- 34:57Speaker 1: But Texas can put distance between themselves and Kentucky and
- 35:01Speaker 1: kind of solidify their bid to be a number one
- 35:05Speaker 1: seed coming off the winnever South Carolina. And they have
- 35:08Speaker 1: the huge game Sunday against LSU. So those are two
- 35:12Speaker 1: massive games for Texas, one on the road, one at home,
- 35:15Speaker 1: and they're closing three games. To be quite honest, they're
- 35:19Speaker 1: all quite winnable games. They have a road game at Georgia,
- 35:23Speaker 1: they have a road game at Mississippi State, kind of
- 35:27Speaker 1: a homecoming for Vic Schaeffer, and they have a home
- 35:30Speaker 1: game against Florida to close out the regular season. Those
- 35:34Speaker 1: are all games in which the Longhorns stand to be
- 35:36Speaker 1: the favorite to win those games. But those the two
- 35:40Speaker 1: games in front of them, the Kentucky game on Thursday
- 35:43Speaker 1: night in Lexington and the game Sunday against LSU, those
- 35:46Speaker 1: two could both be up for grabs, big big games
- 35:49Speaker 1: in both situations. Long Horn men tonight against number two Alabama,
- 35:54Speaker 1: speaking of big games, and then Kentucky comes to town
- 35:56Speaker 1: to play Texas on Saturday, so they have those two
- 36:00Speaker 1: games directly in front of them. For Long Gorn Baseball,
- 36:03Speaker 1: the home openers a week from tonight here at UFCU
- 36:07Speaker 1: dish Falk Field against the Houston Cougars. Prior to that, however,
- 36:11Speaker 1: Texas will be at Globe Life Field in Arlington and
- 36:15Speaker 1: they'll play Louisville, Louisville, Ole Miss, and Oklahoma State three
- 36:22Speaker 1: consecutive opponents. Oklahoma State the preseason choice to win the
- 36:28Speaker 1: Big twelve ranked Louisville Old Miss traditional powers.
- 36:32Speaker 2: The Old Miss game will not count as an SEC game.
- 36:35Speaker 1: In fact, Texas and Ole Miss aren't even on the
- 36:37Speaker 1: conference schedule to face one another this season. That's part
- 36:41Speaker 1: of the reason why they can go ahead and play
- 36:43Speaker 1: this game like this. It would count as a non
- 36:46Speaker 1: conference game. So that's coming up Friday, Saturday Sunday at
- 36:51Speaker 1: Globe Life Field in Arlington. And as we pointed out,
- 36:54Speaker 1: the Long Orange Bill have some new faces on the
- 36:57Speaker 1: Among those is a junior left hander Jared Spencer.
- 37:02Speaker 2: Uh and uh, he's excuse me.
- 37:06Speaker 1: Senior left hander Jared Spencer, who transferred in from Indiana
- 37:10Speaker 1: State's interesting and you're gonna hear Jared make reference to
- 37:13Speaker 1: this that the Longruns have dipped into the Indiana State
- 37:17Speaker 1: pool because of the two basketball players that are on
- 37:21Speaker 1: the Texas squad in Julian Larry and Jason Kent and.
- 37:28Speaker 2: Jared Spencer.
- 37:29Speaker 1: The left hander knows those two guys, so we got
- 37:31Speaker 1: a chance to reacquaint himself with him. He's from Centerville, Michigan,
- 37:35Speaker 1: six ' three, two hundred ten pound left he who
- 37:37Speaker 1: can throw hard and was All Missouri Valley Conference. Pitched
- 37:43Speaker 1: in eighteen games last year, made nine starts. He was
- 37:46Speaker 1: six and zero with a four point h eight ra
- 37:48Speaker 1: had two saves, thirty three walks, seventy two strikeouts, and
- 37:52Speaker 1: fifty three innings. Opposing hitters bat batted two sixteen against
- 37:57Speaker 1: him and the team the Long Wrns are playing on
- 37:59Speaker 1: Friday Night Louisville UH. He pitched against in the season
- 38:03Speaker 1: open last year for Indiana State and got the save
- 38:05Speaker 1: in the season opener on that So Jared Spencer brand
- 38:08Speaker 1: new addition to this Texas pitching staff. And here's the
- 38:11Speaker 1: conversation you had with the media just a little while ago.
- 38:15Speaker 10: A you got left handed pitcher Jared Spencer well up
- 38:19Speaker 10: straight into.
- 38:19Speaker 11: Well Jeremany decided to transfer to Texas. Why was this
- 38:23Speaker 11: the place you wanted.
- 38:24Speaker 9: To After looking at a couple of my options and
- 38:28Speaker 9: finding out Max Wiener was a head coach or a
- 38:31Speaker 9: pitching coach. To hearing all the great news about him,
- 38:36Speaker 9: I wanted to better myself and put myself in a
- 38:38Speaker 9: better place with the.
- 38:40Speaker 11: Texas fans who want to know about you, How would
- 38:42Speaker 11: you describe what you can do in the mound?
- 38:45Speaker 9: I'm ready to get after it. I don't know, I
- 38:48Speaker 9: feel like I don't show as much emotion out there,
- 38:51Speaker 9: but you know, I'm willing to continue this tradition.
- 38:54Speaker 5: And culture here at Texas.
- 38:57Speaker 9: Max max a bunch of good things, just from the
- 39:01Speaker 9: way he coaches to the ability of teaching players step
- 39:06Speaker 9: by step, and that's something that I wanted to continue learning,
- 39:12Speaker 9: especially with the track man too. How much did the
- 39:15Speaker 9: culture here in the new head coach after do.
- 39:17Speaker 8: With provi decision A lot?
- 39:20Speaker 9: I mean I came from a small min major so
- 39:22Speaker 9: there wasn't many fans there, and coming to a place
- 39:26Speaker 9: like Austin, I mean, there's no better place than that.
- 39:29Speaker 12: Jared, I'm not asking to compare, you know, any previous coaches,
- 39:31Speaker 12: but how what stands out about Max as far as
- 39:34Speaker 12: his technique or wait and dewelos the.
- 39:35Speaker 9: Pictures, I'd say the teaching ability, being able to learn
- 39:39Speaker 9: one on one and uh, just the way he teaches.
- 39:43Speaker 5: I mean it's a fun.
- 39:44Speaker 9: Way to learn. And Uh, I've learned a lot of
- 39:47Speaker 9: new things about track man, I've never learned before.
- 39:50Speaker 8: What's the biggest crowd you would get in.
- 39:53Speaker 9: I'm gonna say on a good Friday night, I'd say
- 39:55Speaker 9: close to twenty five hundred maybe three thousand.
- 39:59Speaker 11: What'll sell there is a small major, but it made
- 40:01Speaker 11: a super regional What did you kind what did you
- 40:02Speaker 11: guys kind of what did you learn at Indiana State?
- 40:05Speaker 11: And kind of how did that help develop you?
- 40:07Speaker 9: I compare like Indiana State to like Adju Goo. I
- 40:10Speaker 9: mean the greediness there. I mean we were taught to
- 40:14Speaker 9: worker butts off each and every day. I think that's
- 40:16Speaker 9: kind of what has stuck with me here.
- 40:19Speaker 8: To do it? To go back to your act real quick?
- 40:21Speaker 7: Do what what do you interpret when he says dominate
- 40:24Speaker 7: the zone?
- 40:24Speaker 8: What?
- 40:25Speaker 10: What in your mind does that mean?
- 40:27Speaker 5: Throw it through the middle.
- 40:28Speaker 9: I mean, don't be afraid to say here it is,
- 40:30Speaker 9: try and hit this.
- 40:31Speaker 7: Really okay, don't do don't be afraid to just challenge
- 40:33Speaker 7: you guys straight up.
- 40:34Speaker 10: Yes, sir, what is your most lethal pitch?
- 40:38Speaker 9: I would say my fast far slider. What did it
- 40:42Speaker 9: mean to dominate in fun as well? Dominate in fun,
- 40:46Speaker 9: dominate the zone.
- 40:47Speaker 10: Basically, it's just.
- 40:50Speaker 9: Throwing as many strikes as possible and having fun while
- 40:53Speaker 9: doing it. Don't take this game too serious.
- 40:55Speaker 8: What's the fastest you've been cocked?
- 40:57Speaker 9: Fastest I've been cocked. I've been up to ninety Jared Rin.
- 41:02Speaker 8: Question?
- 41:02Speaker 12: Did you have to know any of the Indiana State
- 41:03Speaker 12: gouys in the basketball team?
- 41:04Speaker 9: Budy Chance, Yes, Jason Kenton and uh, Julian Larry.
- 41:07Speaker 5: Yes, sir.
- 41:07Speaker 10: Did they kind of talk to you about Texas?
- 41:09Speaker 5: Yes?
- 41:10Speaker 8: What did you tell me?
- 41:11Speaker 9: I mean, great, great things. It's way different than Indiana
- 41:15Speaker 9: State for sure, way bigger, And they said that's something
- 41:18Speaker 9: that you gotta get used to.
- 41:19Speaker 10: Uh.
- 41:20Speaker 9: I think the biggest thing was finding a scooter because.
- 41:22Speaker 5: He can't walk.
- 41:24Speaker 4: Do you all on campus?
- 41:26Speaker 10: Uh?
- 41:27Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 41:27Speaker 9: So at Tank I always see him. I'll say, what's
- 41:29Speaker 9: up to them? I'm up gone to the basketball game.
- 41:31Speaker 9: It's pretty cool to see him again.
- 41:33Speaker 4: So as a new guy.
- 41:34Speaker 11: How the older that's kind of brought you in and
- 41:36Speaker 11: you talked to the culture and just kind of embraced you.
- 41:39Speaker 9: Any other new comers at this term, I'd say, I mean,
- 41:42Speaker 9: first day I met Jalen Flores, I mean, and I
- 41:47Speaker 9: felt like everyone was welcoming. I mean, everyone kind of
- 41:49Speaker 9: takes you uno their wing at first, and then you
- 41:52Speaker 9: kind of understand your role here, whether it's your leader
- 41:56Speaker 9: or you're one of those guys to always talk to
- 42:01Speaker 9: and from the leaders that I've met, I mean, it's
- 42:05Speaker 9: awesome to understand the culture and the traditions here, and
- 42:08Speaker 9: that's something that I never knew about Texas before.
- 42:11Speaker 8: Describe your style of pitching.
- 42:14Speaker 9: I'd say fastball heavy, trying to attack early and then
- 42:19Speaker 9: try and use my whiteout slider for the end. What
- 42:22Speaker 9: excites you about your team? I guess everything. I mean,
- 42:26Speaker 9: a bunch of new faces, new culture here, and I'm
- 42:30Speaker 9: I'm excited to see what we can.
- 42:31Speaker 10: Do this year.
- 42:33Speaker 8: Are you the age of the staff.
- 42:35Speaker 9: That I don't know yet? You know, when coach gets involved,
- 42:39Speaker 9: I'll be ready for it. Whether that's relieving or I'll
- 42:42Speaker 9: start this weekend, I'm not for sure yet.
- 42:44Speaker 8: Since you been here. Is there anything you can identify
- 42:47Speaker 8: that is taking you to another level of the new
- 42:49Speaker 8: coaching and being of Texas.
- 42:51Speaker 9: I'm'a say, like the buying end standpoint, whether that's buying
- 42:56Speaker 9: into the standards here, but I mean the coaches here
- 43:00Speaker 9: they try and have as much fun as possible with you.
- 43:03Speaker 9: And that's something that I enjoy the most. Because you
- 43:06Speaker 9: take this game too serious. I mean it's gonna.
- 43:08Speaker 5: Act very quickly.
- 43:10Speaker 8: That's likely you have an experience in the path.
- 43:12Speaker 9: I'd say yes to know. I mean Indiana State was
- 43:16Speaker 9: I mean hard knows greedy and here, I mean you
- 43:22Speaker 9: can mess up sometimes and understand that.
- 43:24Speaker 5: And that's what I'm learning right now.
- 43:27Speaker 8: Did you visit other schools?
- 43:29Speaker 5: I didn't.
- 43:30Speaker 9: I didn't go on any visits.
- 43:31Speaker 8: Did you consider other schooling? Did I consider?
- 43:34Speaker 5: Yes?
- 43:36Speaker 9: But I don't know Texas After I called him twice.
- 43:39Speaker 9: I think that was as soon as I made my decision.
- 43:43Speaker 8: Anything else for Jared cool.
- 43:48Speaker 1: I mean, there's the conversation with Jared Spencer the senior
- 43:52Speaker 1: transfer left hand or again, very gaudy numbers that he
- 43:55Speaker 1: put up, and you heard him ask if somebody asked him,
- 43:59Speaker 1: you know, what's the fastest you've been clocked.
- 44:01Speaker 2: He said in ninety eight.
- 44:03Speaker 1: He's a guy who can bring the heat, a left
- 44:05Speaker 1: hander who can bring the heat. And you know, he
- 44:09Speaker 1: said he doesn't know exactly what the role is yet,
- 44:12Speaker 1: and most of the pitchers, and you're gonna hear coming
- 44:14Speaker 1: up next segment, segment from another one, we'll tell you.
- 44:19Speaker 1: And we heard Andre de Planky you say this earlier.
- 44:23Speaker 1: They're more than happy and willing and excited and eager
- 44:28Speaker 1: to accept whatever role they're asked to accept, whether it's
- 44:32Speaker 1: as a starter or as a reliever. It would probably
- 44:37Speaker 1: be reasonable to assume that Jared Spencer will be a starter,
- 44:41Speaker 1: but we don't know that yet. We'll know by the
- 44:43Speaker 1: time we get to the other weekend.
- 44:44Speaker 2: Things also, rolls.
- 44:47Speaker 1: Modify and change a bit, especially early in the season.
- 44:51Speaker 2: His roles are defined, and.
- 44:55Speaker 1: Max Weener, the pitching coach, and Jim Schloasnagel obviously going
- 44:59Speaker 1: to great detail on what these guys are able to provide.
- 45:03Speaker 1: And you're gonna hear that coming up from our next guy,
- 45:05Speaker 1: who is primarily reliever and may well be reliever and
- 45:08Speaker 1: could possibly be closer for Texas, but he's willing to
- 45:12Speaker 1: do whatever the situation calls for him. That's Ruger Riojas,
- 45:16Speaker 1: who is an area of product originally from Wimberley but
- 45:20Speaker 1: went to middle school and in the in the Greater
- 45:24Speaker 1: Austin area. You'll hear him talk about that coming up.
- 45:27Speaker 1: We're here at UFCU just far Field. At least the
- 45:30Speaker 1: brain has stopped. It is chilly outside today, but no
- 45:33Speaker 1: Noball game today. It was just Texas Baseball Media Day
- 45:36Speaker 1: and giving you an opportunity to hear from long worn players.
- 45:39Speaker 1: And we'll hear from Jim Schlasniegel coming up tomorrow as
- 45:41Speaker 1: we draw closer to Friday's season opener in Arlington.
- 45:45Speaker 2: Up next, we'll.
- 45:46Speaker 1: Hear from the junior transfer right hand to Ruger Riojas.
- 45:51Speaker 1: That's that's up next when we continue here on AM
- 45:54Speaker 1: thirteen under the Zone. About an hour ago that I
- 45:58Speaker 1: commented on the fact I was gazing up with the
- 46:00Speaker 1: upper deck of I thirty five and say it's moving along, okay,
- 46:03Speaker 1: maybe thirty miles thirty five miles an hour. Ye, now
- 46:09Speaker 1: it's about fifteen to twenty, I would say. And I'm
- 46:12Speaker 1: watching an emergency vehicle go down the upper deck right now,
- 46:14Speaker 1: so it's probably going to slow down even more so,
- 46:16Speaker 1: we do be careful if you're out there for that
- 46:19Speaker 1: interesting that they're trying out and doing a lot of
- 46:23Speaker 1: different things here in preparation for the start of the season.
- 46:28Speaker 1: I mentioned that there it was kind of a partner
- 46:30Speaker 1: dust mode and they had a lot of equipment and
- 46:32Speaker 1: power tools and stuff like that, even here in the
- 46:34Speaker 1: radio broadcast booth that we're being used as storage as
- 46:37Speaker 1: they put together in a new television booth here, and
- 46:41Speaker 1: they're working on some things on the video board as well,
- 46:45Speaker 1: but on the regular scoreboard, and baseball fans who come
- 46:48Speaker 1: out here a lot, they know exactly what I'm talking about.
- 46:50Speaker 1: The regular one beyond the left field fence behind the
- 46:53Speaker 1: yetty yard has that signature script Texas on the front illuminated.
- 47:00Speaker 2: Then it's got the you know, the line.
- 47:02Speaker 1: Score listened there the first inning to the ninth inning,
- 47:06Speaker 1: and they still have it up from the last home
- 47:09Speaker 1: games the Longhorns played as a Big twelve Conference school
- 47:13Speaker 1: with the Kansas Jayhawks.
- 47:15Speaker 2: They have the Jayhawk logo up there.
- 47:16Speaker 1: And of course the home opener for Texas will be
- 47:21Speaker 1: a week from tonight against the Houston Cougars.
- 47:23Speaker 2: That will be next week.
- 47:24Speaker 1: They will open the season in Arlington on Friday against
- 47:28Speaker 1: Louisville Friday night at seven, then Saturday evening against Ole Miss,
- 47:32Speaker 1: and then Sunday evening against Oklahoma State. We heard a
- 47:37Speaker 1: few minutes ago from Jared Spencer, the left handed transfer
- 47:43Speaker 1: coming in from Indiana State. There's another transfer, right handed transfer,
- 47:47Speaker 1: a junior, Ruger Riojas, who's an area product. He's from
- 47:51Speaker 1: Wimberley and was a two year letterman at Wimberley. Two
- 47:57Speaker 1: time All State selection, had a one point two eight
- 48:00Speaker 1: ERA as a senior, led the Texans to back in
- 48:04Speaker 1: back to back district titles and then went to UTSA.
- 48:10Speaker 1: In his first season twenty twenty three years of freshman,
- 48:13Speaker 1: he appeared in twenty games with one start, five and
- 48:16Speaker 1: zero record, four to eleven er A. Last year as
- 48:19Speaker 1: a sophomore, he led the team in appearances twenty six appearances,
- 48:23Speaker 1: had one start, mainly used out of the bullpen, but
- 48:25Speaker 1: he led the team in wins with ten ERA at
- 48:29Speaker 1: three point twenty five, saves with seven, and strikeouts with
- 48:32Speaker 1: seventy five. He was All Conference second team in an
- 48:36Speaker 1: American Athletic Conference play. So this is a guy who
- 48:39Speaker 1: can fulfill a variety, can fill a variety of roles,
- 48:43Speaker 1: although many feel that he could wind up in being
- 48:45Speaker 1: the closure. That was one of the questions asked among many.
- 48:49Speaker 1: As we hear from the junior right hander Ruger Riojas.
- 48:54Speaker 11: Jump straight into questions when he decided you on the
- 48:58Speaker 11: transfer come up to Tantungy.
- 49:00Speaker 4: What kind of made Texas the place you wanted to
- 49:03Speaker 4: you wanted to come to me?
- 49:04Speaker 13: Yeah, so, not only is it forty five minutes away
- 49:07Speaker 13: from my hometown of Wimberley, but the catching staff here
- 49:09Speaker 13: truly made this place feel like a tided family and
- 49:13Speaker 13: was just so comforting to me during the you know,
- 49:15Speaker 13: recruiting process and really helped me.
- 49:17Speaker 10: Like it was almost like how could you not come here?
- 49:22Speaker 10: It's just you know, all the resources and staffed here
- 49:25Speaker 10: support you. It's it's unbelievable. I mean, there's no brainer
- 49:29Speaker 10: to come to UTA.
- 49:30Speaker 4: Did you ever get a pitch against Texas?
- 49:31Speaker 10: Really said, I did not?
- 49:33Speaker 8: What was the sales pitch like from shlost and staff?
- 49:35Speaker 13: Yeah, I mean Texas is historically the greatest baseball program
- 49:41Speaker 13: in college baseball. I'd compared to the Yankees of the
- 49:43Speaker 13: college baseball and schlast kept you know, wanted to bring
- 49:47Speaker 13: back to the standard of you know, the glory days
- 49:48Speaker 13: that you know, like the Clemons era and the gust Faller,
- 49:51Speaker 13: And that was something that you know, woul really resonated
- 49:54Speaker 13: with me. Cause if I I my goal here in
- 49:57Speaker 13: college is, you know, go to home Hall and win
- 49:59Speaker 13: the whole thing. I mean, it's always something I've wanted
- 50:02Speaker 13: to do. And I think that's the staff here is
- 50:05Speaker 13: that's their goal, and they're very goal oriented with you know,
- 50:08Speaker 13: meaning it.
- 50:09Speaker 8: You look at the staff, you look at the roster.
- 50:12Speaker 7: Is that a reasonable expectation in year one for this
- 50:16Speaker 7: for the staff to.
- 50:17Speaker 8: Go to on on the whole thing?
- 50:18Speaker 10: I think so.
- 50:19Speaker 13: I think so we're very we're very very good pro program, staff, team, everything,
- 50:24Speaker 13: you know, We're excellent down to the core.
- 50:26Speaker 10: So I think this is for a year one. I
- 50:29Speaker 10: think the expectations are perfect.
- 50:31Speaker 8: Culture is a.
- 50:31Speaker 10: Word that's going on a lot, just kind of the
- 50:33Speaker 10: Hubris and side.
- 50:34Speaker 8: What specifically about the culture kind of stands out and
- 50:36Speaker 8: resonates with you.
- 50:37Speaker 13: Yeah, excellence is number one. I think you know, the
- 50:40Speaker 13: entire staff and uh, everybody that is associated with Texas
- 50:45Speaker 13: Baseball is a big believer in excellence in all aspects
- 50:49Speaker 13: on the field. Off the field and everything you do,
- 50:51Speaker 13: and you know, breaking it down to the very you know,
- 50:54Speaker 13: core is just having good routines and you know, staying
- 50:57Speaker 13: with those routines and all those will compound to eventually
- 51:01Speaker 13: build up to excellence.
- 51:03Speaker 10: What's your first memory of Texas baseball?
- 51:06Speaker 13: Yeah, so I would say it was in eighth grade.
- 51:11Speaker 13: Me and Buddy came to a game they played TCU
- 51:15Speaker 13: and it was the game I remember that Cody Clements
- 51:18Speaker 13: did that walk off and went over the Taco Shacks sign.
- 51:20Speaker 10: That was my first memory of Texas baseball.
- 51:22Speaker 8: That was your first game here. That's a hell of
- 51:24Speaker 8: an introduction.
- 51:25Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, so so would you when you you
- 51:28Speaker 7: still probably have that capture in your mind of the fans.
- 51:31Speaker 12: And the scene and all that, and it's just how
- 51:34Speaker 12: do you impart to like new players, like, hey, we're
- 51:37Speaker 12: trying to get to this spot in your mind and
- 51:39Speaker 12: it's gonna be awesome.
- 51:40Speaker 13: Yeah, you know, taking everything one day at a time,
- 51:46Speaker 13: not looking too forward into the future and just truly
- 51:49Speaker 13: living out each day to the best of your ability.
- 51:52Speaker 13: And you know, like I said, having good habits with it.
- 51:55Speaker 13: You know, just making the right choices every day will
- 51:58Speaker 13: eventually build up to you know, Texas at Since.
- 52:00Speaker 3: What's your participation for this weekend?
- 52:03Speaker 8: Is everything new?
- 52:03Speaker 3: Your first time? I mean to finally take the field.
- 52:06Speaker 3: What's it gonna be like for you?
- 52:07Speaker 13: Yeah, just take it one day at a time, one
- 52:11Speaker 13: pitch at a time. I don't know what to expect.
- 52:13Speaker 13: I don't know if anybody knows what to expect. But
- 52:16Speaker 13: our goal is to win.
- 52:17Speaker 8: Do you have a final role?
- 52:20Speaker 13: Whatever coach wants me to do, I'll do. I just
- 52:23Speaker 13: want to help this program win. And you know, whatever
- 52:26Speaker 13: role he trusts me to do, I think I believe
- 52:28Speaker 13: is what he believes it will help the team wins.
- 52:30Speaker 10: So whatever coach wants us to.
- 52:32Speaker 8: Do, what is the slashest message for this weekend.
- 52:35Speaker 13: Yeah, he's big into the routine. So you know, have
- 52:39Speaker 13: your routine going into this weekend starting. You know, way
- 52:42Speaker 13: back when we first got here, I wouldn't say it
- 52:46Speaker 13: was everything building up to this weekend. I would say
- 52:48Speaker 13: everything building up to today, and then once today's over,
- 52:52Speaker 13: everything building up into tomorrow. So it's really just taking
- 52:55Speaker 13: everything one day at a time. And we're not there
- 52:57Speaker 13: to play. The team are there to play the game.
- 52:59Speaker 13: The team's just who we have to get through to
- 53:03Speaker 13: win the game.
- 53:04Speaker 12: When Texas hired Sloss, you were an outside observer of
- 53:07Speaker 12: the whole situation.
- 53:09Speaker 10: Were you following what was going on with that?
- 53:11Speaker 12: And have you ever seen a college baseball story kind
- 53:14Speaker 12: of get that much attention?
- 53:15Speaker 1: Uh?
- 53:16Speaker 10: No, I have not.
- 53:17Speaker 13: I mean, I think the day I entered the portal
- 53:20Speaker 13: was like the day he got the job. And I mean,
- 53:23Speaker 13: of course there are some some backlash, but I think
- 53:27Speaker 13: it was a great move for him. You know, he's
- 53:29Speaker 13: a great coach, and I don't think he deserves any
- 53:31Speaker 13: of that hate. I mean, I'm sure anybody else anywhere
- 53:33Speaker 13: would have, you know, done what he did. But he's
- 53:36Speaker 13: a very excellent coach and is you know, he cares
- 53:41Speaker 13: about his players regardless of where they are.
- 53:43Speaker 10: He is. He's amazing.
- 53:46Speaker 13: Oh you coach Winner, He's great. He's really I mean,
- 53:51Speaker 13: I would say his point, you know, to be was
- 53:54Speaker 13: the uh the mental approach of the game. And you know,
- 53:57Speaker 13: just believing that you're good enough to pitch in the
- 53:58Speaker 13: sec and you know, when it's your time to be
- 54:00Speaker 13: on the mountain, you're the best picture in the world.
- 54:02Speaker 10: And that's really what he hones in on.
- 54:04Speaker 13: And you know, just being present with yourself on the game,
- 54:07Speaker 13: you know, not trying to look too forward ahead or
- 54:09Speaker 13: you know, in the past, just being yourself in the moment,
- 54:12Speaker 13: one pitch at a time.
- 54:14Speaker 4: How do you how would you describe yourself as a picture?
- 54:18Speaker 13: Yeah, I'd say relentless. I you know, if I'm giving
- 54:22Speaker 13: a game plan, I'm gonna stick to that game plan.
- 54:23Speaker 13: I'm gonna I'm gonna fail with that game plan regardless of,
- 54:26Speaker 13: you know, the outcome. I don't look forward to the outcome.
- 54:29Speaker 13: I just you know, try to win in the present.
- 54:32Speaker 13: Win one pitch at the time.
- 54:34Speaker 8: What are all your pitch what are all your pictures? Yeah?
- 54:37Speaker 13: So I throw a forcing fastball, a slider, a splitter,
- 54:40Speaker 13: and a curve. The slider, the curve, and the splitter
- 54:42Speaker 13: actually new. I started developing them this fall.
- 54:46Speaker 10: Going back to what you said about flaws for a second.
- 54:48Speaker 7: When you spoke with him a couple of weeks ago,
- 54:50Speaker 7: he said that doesn't any hobbies want to.
- 54:51Speaker 13: Be your fault part of you guys, Oh yeah, no,
- 54:53Speaker 13: that's like yeah, yeah. Every during the winter he was like, man,
- 54:56Speaker 13: this is the worst time because I just can't heal
- 54:58Speaker 13: with you guys. That's just to get back to the ballparking.
- 55:01Speaker 13: We were all went there with them too. We just
- 55:02Speaker 13: couldn't wait to get back and you know, be together
- 55:04Speaker 13: work out our goal.
- 55:06Speaker 8: Did you pitch the first game of the series with
- 55:09Speaker 8: a tesay?
- 55:10Speaker 3: Was that right?
- 55:10Speaker 8: Did you pitch the first game of every serious of
- 55:12Speaker 8: the ut So?
- 55:14Speaker 10: Yeah? So the I was a reliever so always Yeah.
- 55:20Speaker 13: So I mean I could pitch Friday, Saturday, Sunday, all
- 55:22Speaker 13: the all three days. I might not even throw the
- 55:24Speaker 13: ball Tuesday. I mean, just whenever they needed me. So
- 55:27Speaker 13: you would you like to be the closure?
- 55:30Speaker 10: I mean, I don't really care about a particular role
- 55:33Speaker 10: to have this year.
- 55:35Speaker 13: I'm I mean, I just love this team so much
- 55:37Speaker 13: and I really wanna just be the best teammate I
- 55:41Speaker 13: can and you know, help other guys around me, you know,
- 55:44Speaker 13: just be impactful to them and help them, you know,
- 55:47Speaker 13: have the winning mindset too.
- 55:49Speaker 11: Since you've been here, is there something that you could
- 55:51Speaker 11: have tentified that help you raise your game?
- 55:54Speaker 1: And then what is it?
- 55:55Speaker 10: Yeah, I would definitely say the uh the mental train
- 55:58Speaker 10: that we have been doing.
- 55:58Speaker 13: It started back in the fall with a guy named
- 56:01Speaker 13: Brian Kane who is a mental strength coach, and I
- 56:04Speaker 13: think some of the you know routines he's helped us
- 56:06Speaker 13: get into and brought us into, have helped out a lot,
- 56:10Speaker 13: and uh definitely just you know some of the things
- 56:13Speaker 13: we're working on.
- 56:14Speaker 10: In practice with you know Max community.
- 56:16Speaker 13: The big thing is, you know, taking it one pitch
- 56:17Speaker 13: at a time or one inning, save one pitch at
- 56:19Speaker 13: a time. Just really helping you stay present and not
- 56:21Speaker 13: trying to you know, get far away or get away
- 56:25Speaker 13: from your anchor, which is you know you and that's
- 56:27Speaker 13: what makes you the best, you know, the best version
- 56:30Speaker 13: of yourself.
- 56:32Speaker 8: Anything else for your help.
- 56:34Speaker 11: Slashed at your first game was the the Clemens game
- 56:37Speaker 11: against CaCu team he was coaching.
- 56:39Speaker 1: I did not did not.
- 56:43Speaker 10: Thank you, thank you.
- 56:44Speaker 1: All right there it is Riojas uh the one time
- 56:48Speaker 1: Wimberley Texan and U t s a roadrunner. Now taxes
- 56:52Speaker 1: long worn look for a ruger in all probability to
- 56:55Speaker 1: be a man out of the bullpen who could really
- 56:58Speaker 1: uh make a big difference for this longer team. All right,
- 57:00Speaker 1: We'll be back to wrap up our number two from
- 57:02Speaker 1: here at UFCU Dish falk Field on Texas Baseball Media Day.
- 57:06Speaker 1: Here on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone, coming
- 57:08Speaker 1: away from UFCU Dish falk Field. It is Texas Long
- 57:11Speaker 1: Worn Baseball Media Day here at the ballpark, so we
- 57:15Speaker 1: had opportunity to hear from long Worton players, also from
- 57:17Speaker 1: head coach Jim schlastneg we'll hear from shlast Tomorrow. We
- 57:20Speaker 1: have one more player we're going to hear from this
- 57:22Speaker 1: our Will Gasparino, the LONGRRN sophomore outfielder coming off that
- 57:26Speaker 1: freshman campaign last year. We'll hear from Will a little
- 57:28Speaker 1: bit later on this half hour Long worn basketball. Tonight,
- 57:33Speaker 1: Texas men hosts the number two team in the country,
- 57:36Speaker 1: the Alabama Crimson Tide. It is interesting I find that
- 57:40Speaker 1: Auburn is number one and Alabama's number two, those two
- 57:44Speaker 1: our rivals. Whatever happened to Uke in North Carolina, right Carolina,
- 57:49Speaker 1: by the way, in a bad way right now after
- 57:51Speaker 1: losing by twenty at Clemson last night. I think they're
- 57:54Speaker 1: fourteen and eleven now and they're listed as being a
- 57:57Speaker 1: bubble team. I mentioned some of Joe Lenardi's bracketology last
- 58:03Speaker 1: hour where he still has Texas in the field and
- 58:05Speaker 1: has them as one of the last four buys, meaning
- 58:09Speaker 1: not slated for Dayton and the first four, but the
- 58:14Speaker 1: schedule doesn't get any easier right now with upcoming games
- 58:18Speaker 1: against Alabama tonight in Kentucky on Saturday. So it's it's
- 58:23Speaker 1: going to be a difficult grind for Texas coming up,
- 58:28Speaker 1: but that's where he has it right now. And Auburn
- 58:31Speaker 1: and Alabama one and two they play Saturday in Tuscaloos,
- 58:34Speaker 1: and I think ESPN College Game Day is going there,
- 58:36Speaker 1: whereas they've never been for an Alabama Auburn basketball game,
- 58:40Speaker 1: but they will this they will this week.
- 58:42Speaker 2: For game Day. Now.
- 58:45Speaker 1: Another thing I wanted to get to I mentioned the
- 58:50Speaker 1: court storming thing, that that that Vanderbilt is trying to
- 58:55Speaker 1: what they call it kind of almost legalized court storming
- 58:57Speaker 1: in a way that it doesn't end danger the players,
- 59:01Speaker 1: the teams, the coaches, the officials, things like that, because
- 59:04Speaker 1: they have been the most fined school in the country
- 59:08Speaker 1: eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars in fines, and so
- 59:12Speaker 1: they have this new policy where they let fans enjoy
- 59:17Speaker 1: a big win and come on to the floor, but
- 59:20Speaker 1: they're not allowed to come on to the floor until
- 59:22Speaker 1: there's a what they say is a one minute delay
- 59:26Speaker 1: at the end of the game in order to give
- 59:28Speaker 1: the players coaches and officials time to lead the floor. Now,
- 59:35Speaker 1: I will tell you this in the case of Vanderbilt,
- 59:37Speaker 1: because this is what they did Saturday. It isn't so
- 59:39Speaker 1: much about letting the Vanderbilt players lead the floor because
- 59:42Speaker 1: they want to celebrate with the students and the fans.
- 59:45Speaker 1: It's to allow the opposing team to safely depart the floor.
- 59:51Speaker 1: Same thing with the officials and the because the players
- 59:54Speaker 1: are doing a victory laugh.
- 59:56Speaker 2: I pointed this out on.
- 59:58Speaker 1: The broadcast because they had security personnel extend this long
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: rope down the length of the floor. And of course
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: we talked quite a bit last week about how unusual
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: Vanderbilt's media setup is anyway, because the arena where they
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: play in Memorial.
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: Gymnasium is less of gymnasium and.
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: More like a concert hall triple deck, and it's almost
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: like one like a Carnegie Hall type of thing, and
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: so as some have called it the old opera house.
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: Well, anyway, it's.
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: Almost like the game itself is contested on a stage
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: and we're kind of almost below level there at like
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: thigh level or whatever, and so stretching the length of
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: the floor of the rope were the security personnel now
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: they really didn't have to worry about a court storming
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: because again Vanderbilt being an unranked Texas team and that's
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: not necessarily worth storming a court over uh Texas name notwithstanding.
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: So they didn't do that, but the players did a
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: victory lap. But I pointed out that if they're really
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: that concern about court storming, having the players do a
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: victory lap probably doesn't help them achieve their rejective.
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: What I did not know at the time.
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: And then and again, this was an ESPN story that
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: came out that was their guinea pig game for this
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: new policy where they allow the players and coaches and
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: officials time to safely leave the floor. And again, the
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: fans didn't storm the court, but it could be put
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: to the test tonight because Auburn plays at Vanderbilt, so
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: we'll see, you know, fans stormed the court after Vanderbilt
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: beat Tennessee and Kentucky, so they have wins there. So
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: so now they're they're trying to, you know, do that
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: in a different way where it makes a little more sense.
- 1:01:55Speaker 8: Uh.
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: That's one basketball note to point out. The other one
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: that I wanted to point out was something I mentioned
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: in the first hour of the program, and that was
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: this business with Dallas Mavericks ownership and management treatment of
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: its own fan base, not just because of the trade
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: which has sparked all of this, the trade of Luka
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: Doncic to the Lakers, and it kind of, you know,
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: had a flash point, if you will, last night.
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: The flash point.
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: Happened in two places, Dallas, where the Mavericks were hosting
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: the Sacramento Kings, and Los Angeles, where the Lakers were
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: hosting Utah in Luka Doncict's debut, and by all measures
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: in La it was successful. Luke had fourteen points, He
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: played twenty four minutes, added some rebounds and assists. He
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: and Lebron James seem to work well together. They're very
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: excited in Los Angeles and they should be. Rob polink
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: At the general managers said it was a gift that
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: they got by way of this trade.
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: And it is the general.
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: Perspective of those who analyze the trade that the Mavericks
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: were fleeced. Now, it's not that Anthony Davis's chop liver.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: In fact, he played well until he hurt. It got hurt.
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: But the problem is is that Anthony Davis and the
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: long ones do need or excuse me, the Mavericks do
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: need a low post presence inside. He really struggles to
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: stay healthy, and he's out again and could be out
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: a few weeks with an abdominal injury, so he could
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: be out for a time. So all that has done
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: is ad to the frustration. And then last night Maverick
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: fans expressed the frustration a lot of booze. There were
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: a couple of fans that held up signs that said
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: fire Nico, as in Nico Harrison, the general manager who
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: made the deal. Those fans were removed from the arena
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: and one fan's face got on the big jumbo tron
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: and he was mouthing the words fire Niko. Well, they
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: went down there and removed him. The Mavericks management kind
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: of hid behind an NBA rule that says if you're
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: displaying either obscene or distasteful or threatening thing toward any
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: one specific person, you can be removed and that and
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: that was their uh, the reasoning behind that. There were
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: other fans who were rejected as well. One guy who
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: had I thought a really good take on this. Now
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: he gets pretty incendiary in his comments and I have
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: to clean it up a little.
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: Bit as I read it to you.
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: If you've ever if you remember the Dallas Stars in
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: their heyday, had just a wonderful play by play voice
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: in Ralph Strangers. He eventually retired, and h and Josh
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: Bogorat does an outstanding job in podcasting the Stars along
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: with Darryl Razor. Ray and Ralph and Razor worked together
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: for several years. Ralph still does a column for Substack,
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: and he went after the Mavericks management and ownership guns
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: Ablazon last night.
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: The headline was MAV's.
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: Follow incredibly bad with horrifically stupid, and they said, following
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: the Luka Doncicch trade, the Dallas Mavericks insult be a
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: little and muzzle their fan base while publicly trashing the
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: generational icon they shipped away.
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: So he wrote this. He actually wrote this before Luca
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: was on the floor.
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: It started with Luka Doncicch returns to the NBA tonight
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: or returns to NBA action tonight. He said a week
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: ago that sentence, reported on the air on a local
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: radio sports ticker would have been welcome news to the
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: Dallas sports community. Today, it's another violent blow to a
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: shaken fan. And then I'll skip on down to some
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: of this.
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: He said. It's a very sad day for Dallas Mavericks fans.
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: He said, for Luka doncis at the very least, he
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: was summarily screwed out of one hundred million dollars and
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: jerked out of his home without a moment's notice. Reports
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: of him recently buying a new house in the community
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: only adds to the sadness. I believe he had no
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: idea any of this was remotely possible. We could go
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: this was unthinkable. Now it's reality, and the fan base
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: is hurting, big time hurting. And the worst part, the
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: Dallas Mavericks don't care. In fact, they've gone out of
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: their way to show exactly how little regard this new
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: ownership group and GM have for their fan base and
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: for the player who led them to the twenty twenty
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: four NBA Finals and led them in the NBA Finals
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: and most scoring categories, And they keep doubling down on
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: the lazy Luca narrative, and that now and that now
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: they have players who can.
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: Get them into the NBA finals.
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: If Mavericks ownership regards their fans at all, it is
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: only with contempt The trade was one thing. But the
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: way this organization has mishandled the blowback, which apparently they
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: didn't think was going to be a thing, is disrespectful
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: and disgusting. The way they've treated their fans is offensive,
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: he said. Here's what I've gleaned the message from the
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: team to the fans since the deal was made. Number
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: one f off, Like I said, I have to clean
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: up some of this. Number two Luca was fatten out
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: of shape. Number three, we will not be accountable to
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: any of you. Who do you think you are? And
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: again this is Ralph Strange's writing this, he said. And
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: because they're such sleazy cowards, they leave a lot of
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: the explaining to others inside and outside of their organization.
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: Some team adjacent media aren't even bothering to hide their
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: intimacy with these corrupt pillagers. They've traded actual reporting for
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: daily work as stenographers and parrot company lines. They attack
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: other media for not falling in line with them or
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: their storylines. This type of reporting, these type of relationships,
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: sadly are everywhere in sports. My old colleague and friend,
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: Mark Followell, was used as a shield at the introductory
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: press conference for the players coming in they were too
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: scared to face objective reporters. Mark is a good soldier
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: and a good man. They put him in a bad spot,
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: and I'm going to guess they didn't even think about
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: what they were asking him to do. I'm a guy
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: who's had the job like that, telling you how it
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: usually is. The arena workers, these wonderful people, many of
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: whom I created deep bonds with over the years while
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: calling Dallas Stars games at the building, were asked to
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: turn on the people they have real relationships with, the fans.
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: These jobs are second jobs for most of them, and
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: they work so hard they're tired. But they always smile
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: with speak with celebrate, and commiserate with everyone in the building.
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: There are only a few things I miss, but I
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: miss all of those people.
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: The workers, some became real friends, all care deeply about
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: being there.
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: But by all accounts, arena and staff and security people
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: were the ones who were told to ask people to
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: remove shirts, hats, and to not speak or chant derogatorily
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: toward ownership or the GM. These snowflake executives are apparently
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: so scared of hearing any descent or having anyone question
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: him if gasp, Nico Harrison had to see T shirts
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: in the stands that weren't reverential to him and the owners.
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: What the world stopped spinning?
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: Unfortunately, we seem to be in an age of the
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: powerful shutting down or attempting to shut down opposition voices
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: shutting down you us fans.
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: We saw it Saturday. They don't want to own the trade.
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: They wouldn't deliver the message themselves and have the executive
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: team man the doors, greet the fans, offer kind words
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: and let them grieve together.
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: However they needed to do that. No empathy at all
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: from this bunch. No brains either.
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: Likely this is being at least partially handled by some
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: expensive outside PR firm. In my experience, those kinds of
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: outfits are wrong way more than right on strategy. If
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: the Mavericks had let the fans get it out, and
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: it won't be just one game, but if they face it,
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: this will fade and then they can start the healing
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: and work to bring everyone back together around a team
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: that they think is even better now after the trade. Instead,
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: they decided to muzzle their fans and customers. How chicken
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: bleep is that. I've worked in professional sports for for
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: forty years. I wish I could tell you that this
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: isn't typical sports executive behavior, because while this is on
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: a level of its own, the behavior and mindset of
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: these and he uses another word is extremely typical. But
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: few things compare to this and their frontman, this Patrick
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: Dumont person. I get PTSD just looking at him. I've
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: never met him, but I know this out of shaped
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: guy with a bad hair in the front py suit
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: who thinks he's the bleep too.
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: Well, this is a hit piece. Continue at your own discretion.
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: Again, that's Ralph Strangis who wrote that former play by
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: play voice of the Dallas Stars, and there are similar
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: pieces right now, absolutely roasting the Mavericks. A for the
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: trade obviously, B for how they've treated the fans and
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: removing fans for booing, and removing fans for saying fire
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: Nico highly highly hyper sensitive. All right, up next, we'll
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: shift back to log horns. We'll shift back to the
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: log horn baseball. We're gonna hear from Will Gasparino, Texas
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: outfielder coming up next when we continue on this Texas
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: Baseball media day at UFCU dish fouk field.
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: I'm thirteen under the zone on.
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: The two after Longhorn baseball team is actually out on
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: the field. Now you can hear the pop of the
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: ball into the mid is some early throwing going on
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: today they had the mediada and we're gonna hear from
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: Will Gasparino in just a moment, the Longhorns outfielder, a
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: couple of other things wanted to get to one already
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: quite a bit of response there to that blog, that
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: piece written by Ralph strangis a lot of folks feeling
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: that it is indeed spot on by the former Dallas
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: Stars play by play voice who writes for Substack, and
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: his absolute evisceration of Mavericks' new ownership.
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: And management less.
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, definitely criticism for the trade, but it
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: was more about the way in which they've treated the fans.
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: And that's what I think shocked so many people last night,
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: that the Mavericks, who've always had a really good relationship with.
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: Their fan base.
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: I mean, it goes all the way back when I
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: was in college, the Mavericks expansion year nineteen eighty eighty one.
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: I was in college and my best friend Alex and
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: I who you know, people know my story to know
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: that I sold t shirts at concerts at Reunion Arena
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: in Houston and other places, put myself through school, and
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: we also worked that Mavericks expansion season eighty eighty one.
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: We sold merch sold merchandise for the Mavericks. Didn't selling
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: awful lot in a fifteen and sixty seven expansion year,
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: but we worked it. But even from that first day
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: when Don Carter was the owner, they were and Rick
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: Son was the general manager, they were always about trying
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: to make sure they had a great relationship with the fans.
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: And it went all the way even through the lean
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: times when they had some ownership that wasn't the best.
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: And then when Mark Cuban took over, he was determined
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: to rebuild that relationship with the fans and they did
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: and that's where the MFFL the MAVs Fans for Life
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: thing came about and their drive toward a championship and
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: all of that. But you know a lot of people
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: upset with what happened last night with fans being removed
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: from the arena just for saying fire Nico or having
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: the sign up a little placard or a T shirt
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: or whatever that kind of thing, and that they will
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: brook no opposition whatsoever on this deal, and have a
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: feeling the final chapter has not been written on this.
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: There's going to be more about this in the days
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: and weeks to come. All right, let's roll it back
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: to long Horn baseball. Will Gasparino, of course, is entering
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: his sophomore season as a Texas Longhorn, and Will clearly
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: made his impression in his first season as a Loghorn
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: as a freshman last year, coming in from Los Angeles,
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: and you know, there was all that talk about him
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: possibly winding up with Oklahoma State, with Billy Gasprino's dad
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: having been there and all that, and so that you'll
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: hear some of that asked of him, because Texas will
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: play Oklahoma State the third game of that Shriner's Children's
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: Baseball Challenge this weekend in Arlington. But last year he
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: hit two fifty two, twelve home runs, forty seven runs
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: batted in, had ten multi hit games, twelve multiple RBI games,
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: big fellow at sixty six, and he's put on some
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: pounds as well, and he talks about that. So here's
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: the conversation with the Walgorn's outfielder, Will Gasprino.
- 1:15:05Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, don't raise up through if everyone needs a second,
- 1:15:10Speaker 3: is the race take.
- 1:15:16Speaker 8: Dang? I mean, if.
- 1:15:19Speaker 7: Everyone's good, goods one second, that's good.
- 1:15:24Speaker 5: Corey good, very good.
- 1:15:27Speaker 7: Outfielder Will Gasparino will jump straight into question.
- 1:15:30Speaker 10: I think we can pass you this question.
- 1:15:32Speaker 11: Last year and they came down here, but you talked
- 1:15:35Speaker 11: to a smack your dad about Sunday's Sunday's game.
- 1:15:38Speaker 10: Sunday's game was Sundays game Foklahoma State.
- 1:15:40Speaker 12: Oh oh yeah, he's he'll be there so, I mean
- 1:15:46Speaker 12: last year he flew in town for the Oakland State
- 1:15:48Speaker 12: game as well.
- 1:15:49Speaker 10: But it's just a fun series.
- 1:15:50Speaker 12: We're very close family friends with the Holidays, so it's
- 1:15:54Speaker 12: kind of funny playing against each other. But I've always
- 1:15:58Speaker 12: respected them and nothing but good things to say and
- 1:16:02Speaker 12: looking forward to Sunday.
- 1:16:03Speaker 11: How at you're kind of looking forward to this whole
- 1:16:05Speaker 11: weekend and the season started and kind of seeing what
- 1:16:08Speaker 11: the team looks like with the new coaching said.
- 1:16:09Speaker 10: I'm excited.
- 1:16:12Speaker 12: We did a really good job in the offseason getting
- 1:16:14Speaker 12: portal guys, and I feel like we've prepared for the
- 1:16:17Speaker 12: last five to six months and we can't wait to play.
- 1:16:21Speaker 10: It's been a while. How new do things feel? Just
- 1:16:23Speaker 10: with a new staff and so many new players.
- 1:16:25Speaker 8: Is there a lot of newness here?
- 1:16:28Speaker 10: Not really.
- 1:16:28Speaker 12: It kind of feels like we've known all the guys
- 1:16:30Speaker 12: for the last few years. I think we get along
- 1:16:32Speaker 12: very well and she's a great group of guys.
- 1:16:34Speaker 13: Coach said that you've invested a lot of time in
- 1:16:37Speaker 13: your body and really understood what the weight program is
- 1:16:40Speaker 13: all about.
- 1:16:40Speaker 8: How do you feel and did you really get after
- 1:16:43Speaker 8: it in the weight room? Yeah?
- 1:16:45Speaker 12: I think coach couches a really good job this offseason
- 1:16:47Speaker 12: and getting a sec ready and building our bodies to
- 1:16:50Speaker 12: the max and to what we've always wanted to. So, yeah,
- 1:16:54Speaker 12: I gained fifteen twenty pounds this offseason and I always
- 1:16:57Speaker 12: knew being a longer guide and.
- 1:16:59Speaker 10: To stay strong, but Coach Cotch is done a really
- 1:17:01Speaker 10: good job of that.
- 1:17:02Speaker 8: What is the mail plans? LA line?
- 1:17:04Speaker 10: Oh, eating a lot? The tank? We have the tank here.
- 1:17:08Speaker 10: It's like our dining hall for athletes.
- 1:17:11Speaker 12: And very fortunate enough to have that, well your head
- 1:17:14Speaker 12: coach at Pace Texas in Nebraska, because he's always there
- 1:17:17Speaker 12: in the summer.
- 1:17:17Speaker 4: On how big an inside the visit for you guys,
- 1:17:21Speaker 4: given his resume, how much hope.
- 1:17:23Speaker 8: Does that give you to get back there.
- 1:17:25Speaker 12: I think it's really cool to have a coach such
- 1:17:29Speaker 12: great as all the accomplishments he's done and had, and
- 1:17:32Speaker 12: I respect him a lot, and both coaching staff is
- 1:17:35Speaker 12: last year as well, nothing but the best. They've always
- 1:17:39Speaker 12: supported me and yeah, I can't wait to get after
- 1:17:41Speaker 12: it this year.
- 1:17:42Speaker 8: What was your first conversation with schlast line?
- 1:17:46Speaker 12: Probably this summer. Just can't wait too after things. I
- 1:17:49Speaker 12: think he was super busy. You know, it was so
- 1:17:51Speaker 12: last minute, so it was a quick like hello, how
- 1:17:55Speaker 12: you doing? But yeah, it was just stoked to have
- 1:17:57Speaker 12: you looking forward to see you're on the field. So
- 1:18:00Speaker 12: we have to guess what the secret to his success
- 1:18:03Speaker 12: is to get into you know, the final days in Omaha,
- 1:18:07Speaker 12: what you've been on the inside. What makes him such
- 1:18:09Speaker 12: a great coach? How does he get the team? I
- 1:18:12Speaker 12: think coach Slosh just the way he leads. He's a
- 1:18:15Speaker 12: very good leader. We just take every day set by
- 1:18:19Speaker 12: step and day by day. There's no getting ahead, and
- 1:18:21Speaker 12: no matter who we're playing, it's just we play to
- 1:18:24Speaker 12: a standard, not to a scoreboard. And I would say
- 1:18:27Speaker 12: just the way the structure is and how you pay
- 1:18:30Speaker 12: attention to little details.
- 1:18:31Speaker 10: It's a big difference.
- 1:18:32Speaker 12: What do you think is could be the biggest difference
- 1:18:34Speaker 12: between you and your first year and you entering the
- 1:18:36Speaker 12: second season as kind of a full time starter or
- 1:18:38Speaker 12: one of the one of the best returns on this team.
- 1:18:40Speaker 12: I think having a little more experience definitely helps. For sure,
- 1:18:43Speaker 12: putting on physically helps.
- 1:18:44Speaker 8: For sure.
- 1:18:46Speaker 12: We're lucky enough to have coach too Low this year
- 1:18:49Speaker 12: and we've done a lot of great things and with
- 1:18:51Speaker 12: all the hitters and cages this year, and so I
- 1:18:55Speaker 12: think all those things will have a big impact and change.
- 1:18:57Speaker 13: And what have you seen from a Tommy Farmers that
- 1:18:59Speaker 13: some whey things gonna be going after position a little
- 1:19:01Speaker 13: bit playing.
- 1:19:02Speaker 8: Some gage there.
- 1:19:02Speaker 12: Yeah, that's my roommates. So we were always competing against
- 1:19:05Speaker 12: each other. But we have a great group of outfielders
- 1:19:08Speaker 12: and everyone could be starting an outfield you never know.
- 1:19:12Speaker 12: So I think it just motivates us to work harder.
- 1:19:15Speaker 12: And it's honestly a good thing with such a good
- 1:19:17Speaker 12: amount of great outfitters.
- 1:19:18Speaker 8: What is being sec ready me and you?
- 1:19:24Speaker 10: Honestly, it's just playing the best of the best.
- 1:19:27Speaker 12: I've always wanted to playgainst the best of the best,
- 1:19:29Speaker 12: and I love the competition and that's what I played
- 1:19:31Speaker 12: this game for. I love to win, but I think
- 1:19:35Speaker 12: it's just the biggest baseball in college.
- 1:19:37Speaker 7: And yeah, we was just out here and he said
- 1:19:40Speaker 7: that he believed that getting to Omaha winning the College
- 1:19:43Speaker 7: World Series are reasonable goals for a year one of
- 1:19:45Speaker 7: his cultures there.
- 1:19:46Speaker 8: Do you agree are those reasonable goals?
- 1:19:50Speaker 5: I mean that's the main goal and we're gonna do
- 1:19:53Speaker 5: whatever it takes to win.
- 1:19:54Speaker 4: What are your thoughts on Easton and what he brings
- 1:19:57Speaker 4: to this winfield.
- 1:19:59Speaker 10: Oh, it was a great pickup off the portal this summer.
- 1:20:03Speaker 10: Super talented, good kid. I think he's an help with
- 1:20:07Speaker 10: our team a lot this year. Obviously a lot of
- 1:20:09Speaker 10: it faces on the pitching staff.
- 1:20:10Speaker 12: What have you kind of seen him when you're facing
- 1:20:13Speaker 12: those guys, But so are some of the things that
- 1:20:15Speaker 12: you've noticed about them. I think they just they got
- 1:20:17Speaker 12: good stuff. And there's no there's no guy that's like
- 1:20:22Speaker 12: an easy at that. It's every single out bad is
- 1:20:24Speaker 12: super tough and you can't slack off at all.
- 1:20:26Speaker 10: It's a great pitching staff. Coach Winer does a really
- 1:20:28Speaker 10: good job with that.
- 1:20:29Speaker 12: Well, what stands up about Adrian Rodbras, Oh, he's I
- 1:20:32Speaker 12: think he's still seventeen eight he's young, but he's almost
- 1:20:37Speaker 12: like an older guy. He's not scared of anyone. Came
- 1:20:40Speaker 12: in super confident, he's performed, super talented. I mean, he's
- 1:20:44Speaker 12: just really good as that for a guy.
- 1:20:46Speaker 10: Who's seventeen eighteen to kind of have.
- 1:20:48Speaker 12: That mentality, Yeah, I think it's really hard coming I
- 1:20:50Speaker 12: mean I experienced it last year. It's really hard coming
- 1:20:52Speaker 12: into college baseball, big time session in the SEC and
- 1:20:55Speaker 12: just being able to have confidence and just be yourself
- 1:21:00Speaker 12: around all the guys. I mean usually it takes a
- 1:21:02Speaker 12: few years for some kids. But he's done a really
- 1:21:03Speaker 12: good job of being comfortable and just doing what he does.
- 1:21:07Speaker 8: And you have to provide him a little guidance.
- 1:21:08Speaker 12: Not that you do that a little bit, Yeah, especially
- 1:21:11Speaker 12: when he struggles like which I'll try to support him
- 1:21:14Speaker 12: if he ever needs anything.
- 1:21:16Speaker 10: He's more with the.
- 1:21:16Speaker 12: Infielders a lot, but yeah, I mean him being he's
- 1:21:18Speaker 12: going to be big time player for us this year,
- 1:21:21Speaker 12: so whenever he needs help, I try to talk to him.
- 1:21:25Speaker 8: Do you think you are going to shock people this year?
- 1:21:28Speaker 10: I think so.
- 1:21:28Speaker 12: I mean I think in your University of Texas kind
- 1:21:31Speaker 12: of do what we usually do yeah, anything else for well, I.
- 1:21:36Speaker 8: Got a one more of the added weight. What have
- 1:21:37Speaker 8: you seen the effects? Just have to play.
- 1:21:40Speaker 12: Just consistency. My body is a fatigue as much. I'm
- 1:21:45Speaker 12: just stronger, still able to run, throw and I mean power.
- 1:21:50Speaker 12: Uh that helps a little bit, but honestly, just being
- 1:21:53Speaker 12: able to be more consistent every day just it helps.
- 1:21:57Speaker 10: For sure.
- 1:21:57Speaker 8: You don't have any calaries your reading today?
- 1:21:59Speaker 12: Oh, watching fla A Nuggets for sure, watch probably six
- 1:22:08Speaker 12: maybe bottom milkshakes at night. Pretty much eat whatever you want,
- 1:22:14Speaker 12: just as much as you can.
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: Nice.
- 1:22:17Speaker 10: It kind of took out.
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: I accept that from the guy six feet six inches
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: in height that he's told eat as much as you can,
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: as long as you can. Can you imagine consuming six
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: thousand calories a day.
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: That's a lot.
- 1:22:40Speaker 5: Uh.
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: I try to stay away from that much consumption myself.
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: All right, that's Longhorn's outfielder, Will Gasparino. We've got some
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: more coming up. I got a couple of women's basketball
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: notes to get to and it's more as well in
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: the NBA when we continue here on this Tuesday afternoon
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: on thirteen under the Zone, got somebody on the tax
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: line menting on my my recollection of that Dallas Mavericks
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: expansion season of nineteen eighty eighty one that had guys
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: on that team like Abdul Jelami, Brad Davis, Tom Leguard,
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: the late Bill Robinsine and then and Jim spinarcle and
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: and Scott Lloyd was another one on that expansion Mavericks
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: team from eighty eighty one. And somebody said the expansion
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: Mavericks would have made a killing selling Jim's spinacle hair gel.
- 1:23:38Speaker 2: I couldn't agree more.
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: Spando had that as they knew him, had that had
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: his hair just kind of like Jimmy Johnson's, perfectly quaffed.
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: It was up to the way he could play with
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: it like that, So there had to be considerable amounts
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: of gel involving in that involved in that expansion season
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: of eighty eighty one.
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: Jumping to.
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: Women's college basketball, I mentioned this yesterday, but the updated
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: bracketologies had not yet been released yesterday, even with the
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: Logorns coming off that win over South Carolina on Sunday. Well,
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: and at the time I mentioned that going into the
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: Sunday game, Texas was already listed by Charlie Cream, who's
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: kind of pretty much viewed as the lead bracketologist of
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: those who cover the women's game, there's two. There's two,
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: or there's actually three that I kind of followed, but
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: the one, the one that Charlie Cream does, is probably
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: closer to being on point.
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: I would not say his.
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: His hit rate, his on point percentages as high as
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: Joe Lenardi with the men, but Leonardi has been doing
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: this for, you know, twenty five thirty years.
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: Joe's been doing it for long time.
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: He's written a book about it, and that's why he's
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: in that ninety six to ninety eight percentile where he's
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: hitting nearly.
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: All of them just about.
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: And I think last year or was the year before,
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: he got ninety nine percent of them and had the
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: vast majority of the ones, also seeded properly, and most
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: of them in the regions, which is really difficult to
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: figure out because the tournament selection committee tries to balance
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: out the bracket as best it can in terms of
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: where they're sending teams. It's a little bit easier to
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: do that with the women because the women, the top
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: four seeds in each of the four regions get to
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: play at home the first weekend, so it's a little
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: bit easier call to make on that, but beyond that,
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: it gets into a big guessing game as well.
- 1:25:44Speaker 2: Well.
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: Going into the weekend prior to the South Carolina game,
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: Charlie Kream had Texas as a one seed. He had
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: him in Spokane, and it made me smile to hear
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: that because it made me think about Vick Schaeffer, the
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: log One's head coach, when I had him on the
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: show last week. We're talking about this and for those
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: of you who don't know that, one of the major
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: differences with the women's sixty eighteen bracket as opposed to
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: the men's sixty eighteen bracket is that the women play
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: first and second round on home sites, as we mentioned,
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: the top four seeds in each region, whereas the men's
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: tournament is completely.
- 1:26:25Speaker 2: You know, neutral courts.
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: Now, let's be honest, there are some courts that are
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: more neutral than others, ones that are closed. Like, for example,
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: Raleigh is one of the first and second round sites
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: for the men. There's a real good chance Duke is
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: going to be playing there. That's twenty minutes from the
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: Duke campus. It's not their home floor, it's in fact,
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: it's in c State's on floor. But it's a chance
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: for their fan base to be there. And it's like
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: that across the country in different places where teams that
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: are really really good get a chance to play close
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: to home but not on their true home court. Well,
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: in the women tournament, the top four seeds in each
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: region do play on their home floor. That is, to
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: be quite honest to bolster. Attendance is a big part
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: of it, and it's also to reward the teams that
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: are near the top of their regions.
- 1:27:17Speaker 2: So there's that, and so Texas of course.
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: Would figure to be at home, which they have been
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: all four years that prior seasons of Big Shaffer as
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: the head coach, and they will be again this year.
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: Beyond that, it'll be interesting to see where they go.
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: But and here's the other major difference between the women's
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: tournament the men's turnament. The men's tournament has eight different
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: neutral sites as we know, for first and second round.
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: Then they have four completely different sites for the Sweet
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: sixteen and the Elite eight the regional sites. The women
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: who have sixteen first round sites because it's on home courts,
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: then follow that up with only two regional sites.
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: But they do have four regions.
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: They just happened to have two at each site, and
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: they did this last year for the first time, and
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: they utilized in those two regions Albany and they utilize
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: which is not far from the Yukon campus obviously, and
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: they utilized Portland, Texas in the past had gone even
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: when they were using four different regional sites, has been
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: sent West pretty consistently, spoke Ine Washington in the past
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: and Portland last year. This year the two regional sites
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: are Birmingham for two of the spots and Spokane for
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: the other two. And when I brought this up to
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: Vic Schaeffer, I said, last year you mentioned going into
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: this when somebody asked you what you thought of this
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: concept of two regions at the same site, and you said,
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: I want to go through it a year and see
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: what I think of it.
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: First asked me. Afterwards.
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: I said, so I'm asking you now one year later,
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: and he said, I don't like it. And the reason
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: he didn't like it is because it really compresses the
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: practice time and the court time and all that sort
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: of stuff. Because you have eight schools utilizing that same floor.
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: It's like a first and second round for the men's site.
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: And he brought up the fact that they had the
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: late game Friday night against Gonzaga beat them in Portland,
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: and then had the first practice time on the off
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: day on Saturday, and it had to be in the
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: morning because they had the other regional going on in
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: the afternoon the Saturday Monday, and so that was the
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: problem there. So he and he said, you can get
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: dollars to donuts. They're going to send us to Spokane.
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: They'll send us way out west. Well, this is why
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: I said, I chuckled, and I smile when I looked
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: at Charlie Kream's bracket projection. The four number one seeds
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: he has of the this morning are UCLA, South Carolina,
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: Notre Dame, and Texas. He has UCLA in Spokane, he
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: has South Carolina in Birmingham, he has Notre Dame in
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: Birmingham in that separate regional but in the same city,
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: same arena, And he has Texas in Spokane.
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: So that's why I was kind of chuckling about that.
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: Now doesn't mean it's gonna stay that way, but for
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: now he has that, and he has the long WRNS
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: is the number one seed in what's called Region four
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: Spokane as opposed to Region one Spokane, meaning the winners
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: of those two regionals, both being played on the same floor,
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: would then meet in the Final four in Tampa. If
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: they advance. In this case, it would be Texas in UCLA.
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: And I'll be honest with you, I've said this. Ucla
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: is number one, They're undefeated, they have a win over
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: South Carolina, so I have no quipple with them being
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: number one. But I think South Carolina is a better team.
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: Vick Schaefer said as much on a post game the
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: other day. He said, no slide against Ucla. Just think
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: South Caroline's a better team.
- 1:31:00Speaker 2: I do too.
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: I've seen them a play and I know they beat
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: South Carolina early in the year. I think if they
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: were to play now, it'd be different. I think it
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: might be different if Texas were playing Notre Dame right now.
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: They remember they lost to the Irish in South Men
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: in overtime back in December in that acc SEC Challenge.
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: But they have Texas has the one seed, with the
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: other teams coming to Austin being Tennessee Tech, who they
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: would face in a one versus sixteen matchup, and the
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: eight nine matchup would be Louisville and Iowa. So that's
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: what he's got there, and he has ten teams from
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: the SEC getting into the tournament. So that's an updated
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: bracketological prognostication for the Texas women as them is a
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: one seed, has them in Spokane from here at Ufcu
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: Diish falk Field on Am thirteen under the Zone
