Latest / Foul Territory / Fair Territory: ALCS Game 6 preview, Brewers wait, Dodgers decisions, Orioles new General Manager
Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome, everyone, to a normal Monday edition of Fair Territory.
- 0:06Speaker 1: I say normal because our schedule in postseason is always
- 0:11Speaker 1: disrupted by travel, games, etc. So this is actually the
- 0:14Speaker 1: day we're supposed to do the show. We're doing the show. Now,
- 0:17Speaker 1: we have some news this morning. Orioles hiring from the
- 0:20Speaker 1: Cubs Jared Banner to be their general manager. He's going
- 0:23Speaker 1: to work under Mike Elias, but they've been looking for
- 0:26Speaker 1: a GM for, I don't know, over a year. And
- 0:29Speaker 1: then at the end of the season, Elias said, acknowledged
- 0:33Speaker 1: they need to beef up their front office, need to
- 0:35Speaker 1: hire people from the outside, need to beef up their
- 0:39Speaker 1: analytics department as well. Here they go. Jared Banner coming
- 0:42Speaker 1: from the Cubs. One of the most notable things he's
- 0:45Speaker 1: known for is prior to the Cubs working for the Mets.
- 0:49Speaker 1: And when the Cubs acquired Pete Crow Armstrong from the
- 0:51Speaker 1: Mets in the Javier Baez trade, Banner was one of
- 0:54Speaker 1: the guys who had an intimate knowledge of Pete Crow
- 0:58Speaker 1: Armstrong's skill set and, of course, recommended him. So that's
- 1:02Speaker 1: good on his record for sure, and the Orioles making
- 1:05Speaker 1: this move. We are expecting any day now, maybe even today,
- 1:09Speaker 1: the A's are going to name their next head of
- 1:11Speaker 1: baseball operations. Taylor Smith from the Red Sox seems to
- 1:15Speaker 1: be the frontrunner there, but that process has had some
- 1:18Speaker 1: twists and turns already, so we shall see how it goes.
- 1:22Speaker 1: But anyway... These are minor things compared to what's going
- 1:26Speaker 1: on in the world of baseball right now. The postseason,
- 1:29Speaker 1: the ALCS, the Rays taking a three games to two
- 1:33Speaker 1: lead yesterday as the series returns to the trop without
- 1:36Speaker 1: an off day due to the rain out. Series resumes tonight.
- 1:40Speaker 1: And really, the way it looks, everything is tilting in
- 1:45Speaker 1: the Rays' favor. In that case, often in baseball, it's
- 1:49Speaker 1: dangerous to look at it that way. And maybe it
- 1:51Speaker 1: will tilt the other way. But let's go through it.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Freddy Peralta starts tonight for the Rays, going against a
- 1:57Speaker 1: bullpen game for Cleveland, really a third straight bullpen game.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Freddy Peralta, last eight appearances, 0.79 ERA. That includes his
- 2:06Speaker 1: two-thirds of an inning of relief in game four on Friday.
- 2:10Speaker 1: In this series, he has allowed four hits, not four runs,
- 2:13Speaker 1: four hits in six and two-thirds innings. Now, there is
- 2:18Speaker 1: some batted ball luck in this streak, at least based
- 2:20Speaker 1: on his Babbitt, but at the same time, 0.79 ERA
- 2:25Speaker 1: in eight appearances is a 0.79 ERA in eight appearances.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Regression might come, might even come today, but he's not
- 2:33Speaker 1: facing the most dynamic offense either. Now, the Guardians are
- 2:37Speaker 1: in a bit of a pickle here. As I said,
- 2:40Speaker 1: what this is today is essentially a third straight bullpen game,
- 2:44Speaker 1: in part because Parker Messick didn't go very deep into
- 2:47Speaker 1: that game yesterday. And yesterday... The way it turned out, Cebrowski, Gattis,
- 2:53Speaker 1: and Cade Smith all end up working more than an inning.
- 2:57Speaker 1: So their bullpen is taxed. It's been taxed for some
- 3:00Speaker 1: time now. And have they survived this? I don't know.
- 3:04Speaker 1: The way generally to survive this is to have an
- 3:06Speaker 1: offensive breakout that would not seem to be necessarily in
- 3:10Speaker 1: the cards. The Rays at the Trop this season, including playoffs,
- 3:14Speaker 1: are now 58-27. 58-27. That's really good. And I guess
- 3:21Speaker 1: Guardians fans are looking at this and saying, well, we
- 3:25Speaker 1: didn't go about it right in game four with the
- 3:29Speaker 1: bullpen the way it was used. We should have chased
- 3:32Speaker 1: that game a little bit bigger or in a little
- 3:34Speaker 1: bit bigger way than we did. Maybe stuck with Foster
- 3:38Speaker 1: Griffin longer. And then yesterday, of course, it looks like
- 3:40Speaker 1: the decision to start Messick backfired. He's on normal rest.
- 3:44Speaker 1: He's at 200 innings. He's never been close to that.
- 3:47Speaker 1: And Yeah, you can look at it that way. And
- 3:50Speaker 1: all these things do have some validity to them. But really,
- 3:53Speaker 1: the problem for the Guardians, as was the problem for
- 3:55Speaker 1: the Dodgers in the NLCS, comes down to the fact
- 3:59Speaker 1: that they haven't hit. And I want to show you something, too,
- 4:02Speaker 1: with regard to Parker Messick and really a lot of
- 4:05Speaker 1: the innings or the starters that are remaining in this postseason.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Their innings are mounting. They are all at levels where
- 4:14Speaker 1: they haven't been before. I'm going to show you right here.
- 4:17Speaker 1: All right, now these totals for 2026 include the minor leagues,
- 4:21Speaker 1: include the postseason for both years, actually, 2025 and 26.
- 4:25Speaker 1: So keep that in mind, but they're totals. Mizorowski's gone
- 4:29Speaker 1: from 141 and a third to 183. Logan Henderson from
- 4:33Speaker 1: 103 to 131 and a third. Not a terribly big
- 4:36Speaker 1: jump in his case, but he has had a lengthy
- 4:39Speaker 1: injury history. Messick, 138 last year to 200. Rasmussen, 138.
- 4:44Speaker 1: who has pitched extremely well and was extremely good again yesterday,
- 4:48Speaker 1: 150 to 193. So you see there that most of
- 4:54Speaker 1: these guys are in uncharted territory. And for Mizorowski and Henderson,
- 4:58Speaker 1: you would think this week-long layoff for the Brewers will
- 5:01Speaker 1: do them good. It should be that way, but it
- 5:04Speaker 1: could be also that their arms really are tired right
- 5:07Speaker 1: now and one week off is not necessarily going to
- 5:10Speaker 1: help all that much. Can't hurt. No question, but I
- 5:14Speaker 1: don't know that it will help. So we'll see how
- 5:17Speaker 1: this plays out in St. Petersburg tonight, but certainly the
- 5:21Speaker 1: Rays have an advantage here. They're going home for the
- 5:24Speaker 1: next two games if necessary. They've got Freddy Peralta on
- 5:28Speaker 1: the mound. They've got the pitching edge over the Guardians.
- 5:31Speaker 1: All right, after the last out, flip over to the
- 5:35Speaker 1: Foul Territory YouTube channel for a live postgame show. A.J. Pruszynski,
- 5:39Speaker 1: Todd Frazier, and Eric Kratz either celebrate the AL pennant
- 5:43Speaker 1: We'll look ahead to Game 7. FT Post Game Show
- 5:46Speaker 1: live tonight. That will be right after Guardians Rays ALCS
- 5:51Speaker 1: Game 6. All right, here we go with Fox Sports
- 6:01Speaker 1: 1 on deck. And this is about the NLCS and
- 6:04Speaker 1: the Brewers vanquishing the Dodgers and how they will respond
- 6:08Speaker 1: to a layoff that is quite lengthy. In fact, I
- 6:12Speaker 1: had to look this up. Actually, somebody else looked it
- 6:14Speaker 1: up and I got it off the internet. But since
- 6:17Speaker 1: the LCS went to a seven-game format in 1985, the
- 6:21Speaker 1: only longer stretch of time off for a league champion
- 6:25Speaker 1: before Game 1 of the World Series was in 2007.
- 6:27Speaker 1: That was the Colorado Rockies. They had eight days off
- 6:32Speaker 1: as opposed to the Brewers having seven. We know what
- 6:35Speaker 1: happened to the Rockies. It didn't go well for them.
- 6:38Speaker 1: The Red Sox swept them. So... We'll see how this
- 6:42Speaker 1: plays out for the Brewers. Generally speaking, time off at
- 6:45Speaker 1: this time of year allows guys to rest their bodies
- 6:47Speaker 1: and everyone is tired. Everyone is banged up. Everyone is achy.
- 6:52Speaker 1: And as I just mentioned, for Mizorowski and Henderson, it
- 6:55Speaker 1: certainly can't hurt. They're up in levels where they have
- 6:58Speaker 1: not been as far as how much they've pitched this season.
- 7:01Speaker 1: But the Brewers, it seems, based on the way they
- 7:05Speaker 1: played against the Dodgers, that they're capable of overcoming anything.
- 7:10Speaker 1: And in that series, as Of course, as you know
- 7:12Speaker 1: by now, they overcame deficits in all four games. And
- 7:17Speaker 1: in the finale, game four, they overcame a 4-0 deficit
- 7:20Speaker 1: on a night when Shohei Otani had electrified Dodger Stadium
- 7:25Speaker 1: with his three-run homer. It looked like this series was
- 7:28Speaker 1: about to go the other way. Remember, if the Dodgers
- 7:31Speaker 1: had won that game, they had Scooble and Yamamoto lined
- 7:35Speaker 1: up for the next two against what has been somewhat
- 7:39Speaker 1: of a fading Mizorowski and Henderson, It could have changed.
- 7:42Speaker 1: It didn't. The Brewers came back again, and really, they're
- 7:46Speaker 1: up to 110 wins now. It's been a remarkable season.
- 7:50Speaker 1: It needs to end with a World Series title. At
- 7:53Speaker 1: this point, it would be extremely disappointing for Brewers and
- 7:57Speaker 1: their fans if it ended in anything less. But my goodness,
- 8:00Speaker 1: they were just remarkable against the Dodgers. Remarkable being a
- 8:04Speaker 1: word that their former owner, Bud Selig, often used. before
- 8:08Speaker 1: he was commissioner, when he was the owner of the team,
- 8:10Speaker 1: and even when he was commissioner. That was one of
- 8:11Speaker 1: his favorite words. Keep in mind, from innings six to nine,
- 8:16Speaker 1: the Brewers outscored the Dodgers 10-2. That's pretty impressive. And
- 8:22Speaker 1: of course, their bullpen with Ashby at the end, and
- 8:25Speaker 1: Trevor McGill and Uribe doing what he was doing. That
- 8:29Speaker 1: was simply an impressive thing. Now, getting back to that layoff,
- 8:34Speaker 1: here's another number that is Somewhat daunting if you're a
- 8:38Speaker 1: Brewers fan and if you're Milwaukee getting ready for this thing.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Since 2009, the team to clinch its pennant first, the
- 8:45Speaker 1: team to have the shorter series, is 4-12 in the
- 8:49Speaker 1: World Series. Now, it doesn't mean that the Brewers are
- 8:53Speaker 1: suddenly going to fall apart here, but certainly the layoff
- 8:57Speaker 1: does present a challenge, particularly offensively. It seems at times
- 9:01Speaker 1: teams struggle to regain their rhythm offensively, No matter how
- 9:05Speaker 1: many simulated games they play, no matter how much live
- 9:08Speaker 1: batting practice they take, nothing replicates playing in a postseason game.
- 9:13Speaker 1: The stress of that, the pressure of that, the intensity
- 9:16Speaker 1: of that. So again, this will be something of a challenge.
- 9:21Speaker 1: No question about it. But at the same time, what's
- 9:23Speaker 1: the flip side? The flip side is you go seven
- 9:26Speaker 1: against the Dodgers. You beat the Dodgers. We're playing this
- 9:28Speaker 1: out hypothetically. And then your pitching is tired. So this
- 9:32Speaker 1: is a better situation. optimal or more optimal situation for
- 9:36Speaker 1: the brew crew here. Now, there's one other thing that's
- 9:39Speaker 1: really interesting here, and I'm interested to see how it
- 9:42Speaker 1: plays out. Brandon Woodruff, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel,
- 9:47Speaker 1: after the series was clinched in Los Angeles, said, it's
- 9:52Speaker 1: going to be hard to keep me off the roster. Now,
- 9:54Speaker 1: who is Brandon Woodruff, in case you've forgotten? He's been
- 9:57Speaker 1: a longtime brewer. their ace at times. He also has
- 10:01Speaker 1: been out since July 4th with a shoulder injury that
- 10:05Speaker 1: originally was thought to have required surgery. He rehabbed it.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Now he's throwing again. He's going to throw a live
- 10:12Speaker 1: batting practice on Tuesday. They're going to see where he is. Now,
- 10:17Speaker 1: it would be a cool story if Woodruff, given his
- 10:19Speaker 1: history was activated for the World Series, but I don't
- 10:23Speaker 1: see it happening. And I don't see it happening because
- 10:26Speaker 1: he's been out so long. We don't know what his
- 10:29Speaker 1: velocity is going to be. And even if it's, I
- 10:30Speaker 1: don't know, 92-94, which for him would be good with
- 10:33Speaker 1: the shoulder injury, do you trust it over someone who
- 10:37Speaker 1: is pitching and is active and is good to go?
- 10:40Speaker 1: I don't know that you do. And people might say, well,
- 10:44Speaker 1: the Brewers owe it to Woodruff. I guess you can
- 10:48Speaker 1: make that case, but my goodness, what they owe their
- 10:50Speaker 1: team most, what Woodruff owes the team most, what must
- 10:55Speaker 1: happen here is for the Brewers to win the World Series.
- 10:57Speaker 1: That's goal number one. This is not about honoring players
- 11:00Speaker 1: who have been great teammates and great pitchers for you.
- 11:03Speaker 1: It's about winning. If Woodruff can help you win in
- 11:07Speaker 1: a way that some other pitcher on the roster cannot, well, yes,
- 11:10Speaker 1: of course, you activate him. I'm just not sure that
- 11:14Speaker 1: would be the right thing for Milwaukee to do. So
- 11:17Speaker 1: we'll see how it goes. And certainly the Brewers have
- 11:21Speaker 1: some time to lick whatever wounds they have and rest
- 11:25Speaker 1: up and get ready for either Tampa Bay or Cleveland.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Tampa Bay or Cleveland, it would be a small market
- 11:31Speaker 1: palooza in the World Series. It would be quite something
- 11:34Speaker 1: to see. And in a sense, Tampa Bay, Milwaukee, would
- 11:40Speaker 1: be a better World Series. I believe it would feature
- 11:43Speaker 1: the best teams, the teams with the best records in
- 11:46Speaker 1: each league. Remember, Tampa Bay won 13 more games than
- 11:50Speaker 1: the Guardians during the regular season. Tampa Bay plays a
- 11:53Speaker 1: very appealing style. If you watch them defensively, if you
- 11:56Speaker 1: watch them bunt, put the ball in play, do all
- 11:58Speaker 1: the things that they do. And Milwaukee, very similar. Contact
- 12:02Speaker 1: wasn't necessarily in their favor in the last series. They
- 12:05Speaker 1: struck out a ton. But the way they play the game,
- 12:08Speaker 1: the way they run, Yes, defensively, of course, both these teams,
- 12:13Speaker 1: it would be fun to watch them play in the
- 12:15Speaker 1: World Series. So we shall see what transpires tonight and
- 12:19Speaker 1: possibly tomorrow in the ALCS, and then we will have
- 12:22Speaker 1: the World Series. All right, the MLB on Fox is

- 12:45Speaker 1: at foxone.com. All right, time now for the inside dish,
- 12:55Speaker 1: the part of the show where I talk about, I
- 12:57Speaker 1: don't know, something I've written, a trend in the game,
- 12:59Speaker 1: something that's agitating you guys, or maybe all of the above.
- 13:04Speaker 1: And what I want to discuss is the column I
- 13:07Speaker 1: wrote after the NLCS, really about the Dodgers' aftermath. And
- 13:11Speaker 1: let's start off by saying what I said at the
- 13:13Speaker 1: start of the column, and I wrote it at the
- 13:15Speaker 1: start of the postseason. Just because a small market team
- 13:19Speaker 1: defeated the big money Dodgers, just because we're going to
- 13:22Speaker 1: have two small market teams in the World Series, it
- 13:26Speaker 1: changes nothing as far as the labor situation is going
- 13:30Speaker 1: to be concerned. The owners are still going to propose
- 13:33Speaker 1: contracts and obviously push for a salary cap. The owners
- 13:37Speaker 1: are still going to lock out the players on December 1st.
- 13:41Speaker 1: And if you're watching, if you're listening, and you have
- 13:43Speaker 1: an opinion on this, I don't expect your position to change.
- 13:46Speaker 1: It's fully formed, for the most part, I would expect.
- 13:49Speaker 1: And you have your thoughts. So what does change? Probably
- 13:53Speaker 1: nothing with regard to labor. And I also want to
- 13:56Speaker 1: start off this segment by saying something I've said repeatedly,
- 14:00Speaker 1: and it doesn't seem to be getting through to people,
- 14:03Speaker 1: at least the way it should. And that is, I
- 14:06Speaker 1: believe change is necessary. I believe small market teams need
- 14:10Speaker 1: to be given a better chance. I need payroll disparity
- 14:13Speaker 1: to be reduced. I want all of these things. I
- 14:16Speaker 1: just don't want it in a way that's going to
- 14:19Speaker 1: shut down the sport. Sport is too much momentum. And
- 14:22Speaker 1: as I've said repeatedly, this is not a zero-sum situation.
- 14:26Speaker 1: This is not black and white. Salary cap or nothing. No.
- 14:30Speaker 1: There are ways to fix the collective bargaining agreement, and
- 14:35Speaker 1: make it so it is fairer, so payroll disparity is reduced.
- 14:39Speaker 1: So let's be real clear about that, okay? Let's start there. Now,
- 14:43Speaker 1: the Dodgers. As I wrote, this idea that the Dodgers
- 14:50Speaker 1: in perpetuity were going to be this behemoth is absurd.
- 14:55Speaker 1: It doesn't work that way. There is a cyclical nature
- 14:58Speaker 1: to teams, and Andrew Friedman said it in 2022. He
- 15:02Speaker 1: basically said he is concerned that at some point, hey,
- 15:08Speaker 1: we're going to experience a downturn. Now, it took a while.
- 15:11Speaker 1: And certainly it took a while for the Dodgers to
- 15:13Speaker 1: fall a little bit. They've fallen in this postseason. But
- 15:16Speaker 1: here's what Friedman said back then. There are a lot
- 15:18Speaker 1: of cautionary tales of large revenue teams that have had
- 15:22Speaker 1: a period of success and then kind of fallen off
- 15:24Speaker 1: a cliff and had to take time to rebuild. Excuse me.
- 15:29Speaker 1: And we're doing everything we can, Friedman said then. to
- 15:32Speaker 1: stave off that and to maintain this level for as
- 15:35Speaker 1: far as we can see out. Now, the Dodgers basically
- 15:37Speaker 1: have done that. And yes, they're going to be good
- 15:40Speaker 1: next year. There's no question. They might even be favored
- 15:43Speaker 1: to win the World Series. They have that much talent.
- 15:45Speaker 1: But as we've seen, there's some age on this team too.
- 15:50Speaker 1: And this was actually a concern last year as well.
- 15:53Speaker 1: If they had lost the World Series to the Blue Jays,
- 15:56Speaker 1: the age factor would have become more of a question then. Now,
- 15:59Speaker 1: they brought in Kyle Tucker in the offseason, a younger guy,
- 16:03Speaker 1: not young per se, but 29-ish, I think, at the
- 16:05Speaker 1: time he signed. And yet, you look at them now,
- 16:09Speaker 1: Freddie's 37, Muncie's 36, Betts is 34. You've got Snell
- 16:14Speaker 1: and Glass now that are both 33, Otani's 32. Not
- 16:17Speaker 1: ancient in most of these cases, still productive in almost
- 16:21Speaker 1: all of them, and I would expect it would remain
- 16:23Speaker 1: that way. But we see this in the game, that
- 16:26Speaker 1: these big contracts that extend for a while When you
- 16:30Speaker 1: have older players, they can bite you. The Yankees are
- 16:34Speaker 1: experiencing it to some degree. The Phillies are experiencing it
- 16:37Speaker 1: to some degree. You need younger players. And at some time,
- 16:41Speaker 1: or in some cases, they're not there. The Dodgers have
- 16:44Speaker 1: younger players. I just don't know necessarily where they're going
- 16:47Speaker 1: to put some of these outfielders, as long as Teo
- 16:49Speaker 1: Hernandez is still on the roster. So there is a
- 16:54Speaker 1: downturn that might come here. It might not be severe.
- 16:59Speaker 1: It might not be, as Andrew Friedman said, falling off
- 17:02Speaker 1: a cliff, but the Dodgers were not going to be
- 17:05Speaker 1: powers forever and are not going to be powers forever.
- 17:09Speaker 1: And this idea that MLB has perpetuated that, oh my gosh,
- 17:13Speaker 1: they can't be stopped. They spend all this money. No,
- 17:17Speaker 1: we just saw they got beat by a hungrier team.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Dave Roberts told me in the post-game interview after game four,
- 17:23Speaker 1: not only were they hungry, the Brewers were starving. And
- 17:27Speaker 1: not only that, They were more athletic. They played a
- 17:31Speaker 1: better brand of baseball. They made the Dodgers look old.
- 17:35Speaker 1: So I don't know where this is going with the Dodgers. Certainly,
- 17:38Speaker 1: they're going to be a different team next year, and
- 17:40Speaker 1: they have some other trade candidates besides Tao. As well,
- 17:44Speaker 1: Tommy Edmund possibly has been mentioned. Tyler Glass now, if
- 17:47Speaker 1: you can maybe move that deal, you do that. They
- 17:50Speaker 1: have some things that they will consider. They have some
- 17:52Speaker 1: free agents, notably Tarek Skubal. He might be back. He
- 17:56Speaker 1: might not. And most of their other free agents are
- 17:59Speaker 1: either relievers or secondary players, like Kike Hernandez, for example.
- 18:04Speaker 1: So they'll be good. I have no doubt they'll be good.
- 18:07Speaker 1: But some of these players are getting older. And you've
- 18:10Speaker 1: got next year Freeman and Muncy in their last years.
- 18:14Speaker 1: And it's going to be something for the Dodgers to
- 18:18Speaker 1: look at this offseason and beyond, depending on the rules
- 18:21Speaker 1: of engagement in the labor agreement, just what they are
- 18:24Speaker 1: going to be going forward. It doesn't last forever. And also,
- 18:30Speaker 1: the idea that the postseason is all that matters, that
- 18:33Speaker 1: is a ridiculous idea that has come up in this
- 18:36Speaker 1: labor discussion as well. The postseason is not all that matters.
- 18:40Speaker 1: The regular season matters a great deal. And yes, you
- 18:44Speaker 1: look over the last 10 years, certainly it's true that
- 18:47Speaker 1: the Kansas City Royals are the last small market team
- 18:49Speaker 1: to win a World Series. We're going to have another
- 18:51Speaker 1: one this year. And cyclically, again, we're probably going to
- 18:55Speaker 1: have one at some point in the near future, no
- 18:56Speaker 1: matter what the labor agreement looks like. So there it is.
- 19:01Speaker 1: And that's the inside dish. We'll be right back after this.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Cratch, it's that time of year where all the sports
- 19:08Speaker 2: are pretty much going right now from the baseball playoffs,
- 19:11Speaker 2: which obviously on foul territory, we love. NCAA football, there's
- 19:15Speaker 2: huge games this weekend, conference games. There's NBA starting. NHL
- 19:19Speaker 2: is going and the NFL is in full swing right now.
- 19:23Speaker 2: So if I need to get tickets because I go
- 19:24Speaker 2: everywhere and I go to a lot of games, I
- 19:26Speaker 2: use SeatGeek. I don't need to go everywhere. I just
- 19:29Speaker 2: need to go to the World Series. Maybe I got
- 19:32Speaker 2: to go see LeBron play too. So I just scroll across.
- 19:35Speaker 2: I figure out where the best place to watch the
- 19:37Speaker 2: game is. SeatGeek's got me.
- 19:40Speaker 3: That's right. Red dot, bad deal, they think. Green dot,
- 19:44Speaker 3: great deal. But you get to choose. That's the one
- 19:46Speaker 3: great thing about SeatGeek. And of course... We have a code.
- 19:49Speaker 3: Kratz and I have a code for you.
- 19:51Speaker 2: You can use code TERRITORY10 for 10% off your next
- 19:54Speaker 2: set of tickets at SeatGeek. That's 10% off all tickets
- 19:57Speaker 2: with promo code TERRITORY10. Make sure you click the link
- 20:00Speaker 2: in the description to download the app and have the
- 20:03Speaker 2: code automatically added to your account so you can use
- 20:05Speaker 2: it later.
- 20:14Speaker 1: All right, more news this morning, and because today is
- 20:17Speaker 1: not an off day, and it should have been, you're
- 20:19Speaker 1: seeing some announcements from teams on personnel. We told you
- 20:23Speaker 1: earlier about the Orioles hiring Jared Banner as their general
- 20:26Speaker 1: manager under Mike Elias. Jared Banner was also a candidate
- 20:30Speaker 1: for the A's head of baseball operations, and the A's,
- 20:33Speaker 1: as we kind of teased at the start of the show,
- 20:35Speaker 1: have just announced that they have a new president of
- 20:38Speaker 1: baseball operations. His name is Taylor Smith. He comes from
- 20:41Speaker 1: the Red Sox, and before that, the Rays. The A's
- 20:44Speaker 1: had a pretty expansive process, number of candidates, number of interviews,
- 20:49Speaker 1: but this is the guy they settled on. And frankly,
- 20:52Speaker 1: they've got a chance to do some big things as
- 20:55Speaker 1: they get ready for Las Vegas. It's going to depend
- 20:57Speaker 1: on the owner, John Fisher, and what he allows them
- 21:01Speaker 1: to spend. That, of course, will depend as well on
- 21:04Speaker 1: the labor agreement and what that looks like. And if
- 21:06Speaker 1: it includes some kind of floor, that probably will have
- 21:09Speaker 1: to take effect, not immediately, but over time. But The
- 21:13Speaker 1: A's have a number of quality position players, younger position
- 21:17Speaker 1: players under contract. They've got to fix the pitching, which
- 21:20Speaker 1: is not easy to do in Sacramento. That's their choice.
- 21:24Speaker 1: And we'll see if Taylor Smith can succeed in that regard. Okay,
- 21:28Speaker 1: this is Grill and Can. It's time for your questions.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Enough of me. Let's get to what you have to say.
- 21:33Speaker 1: First question from Foul Territory Show. That's us. Why do
- 21:36Speaker 1: you think Carlos Mendoza picked the Phillies over the Mariners?
- 21:40Speaker 1: It seems to me that Carlos Mendoza, rather than go
- 21:43Speaker 1: through the process of interviewing for managing jobs and all
- 21:46Speaker 1: the different things that come with that, took the bird
- 21:49Speaker 1: in hand. And the bird in hand certainly was this
- 21:53Speaker 1: Phillies job and returning to coaching, which is something he
- 21:56Speaker 1: does extremely well. If a managerial opening comes up at
- 22:00Speaker 1: some point in the future, he'll be in position to
- 22:02Speaker 1: take that. It's interesting that he goes to the Phillies,
- 22:05Speaker 1: of course, after working for the Mets. But Carlos Mendoza
- 22:09Speaker 1: is an outstanding baseball person. And you can have your
- 22:12Speaker 1: opinions about what he was like as a manager. Guys
- 22:16Speaker 1: in their first jobs as managers often aren't what they
- 22:19Speaker 1: can become later. We've seen it time and again. And
- 22:23Speaker 1: he was a bench coach for the Yankees for so
- 22:25Speaker 1: many years, did a great job there. and had his
- 22:28Speaker 1: moments as Mets manager as well. I know Mets fans
- 22:30Speaker 1: are freaking out one way or another about it, one
- 22:33Speaker 1: thing or another, but he did have some good moments there.
- 22:36Speaker 1: So good for him. Congratulations to Carlos Mendoza on getting
- 22:40Speaker 1: that job, and to the Phillies as well. All right,
- 22:44Speaker 1: let's get to another question. Favorite World Series atmosphere you've
- 22:48Speaker 1: been in? All right, this is an interesting question because
- 22:51Speaker 1: I've got a few. So my first World Series, and
- 22:55Speaker 1: I'm going to date myself, It was 1987, Minnesota Twins
- 22:59Speaker 1: versus St. Louis Cardinals, the Metrodome. Also, 1991 World Series,
- 23:04Speaker 1: the Metrodome. That place was deafening, and I'll never forget it.
- 23:09Speaker 1: That was an amazing atmosphere. I'd also have to mention
- 23:13Speaker 1: Philadelphia in 2008 and 2009 when the Phillies were rolling.
- 23:17Speaker 1: I would mention Wrigley Field, 2016. But really, most World
- 23:22Speaker 1: Series atmospheres are pretty good. I'm sure I'm skipping some.
- 23:26Speaker 1: I'm missing some. But those are the ones that immediately
- 23:31Speaker 1: stand out to me in particular. All right, let's get
- 23:34Speaker 1: to another question if we can. Let's see. I guess
- 23:39Speaker 1: we don't have time for another question. So I'm going
- 23:41Speaker 1: to wish you guys a happy game six of the ALCS.
- 23:44Speaker 1: I'm going to thank you for watching and listening. Foul
- 23:47Speaker 1: Territory coming up at 1 p.m. Eastern. AJ Pruszynski, Eric Kratz,
- 23:51Speaker 1: and Scott Braun hosting. The guests include Curtis Granderson and
- 23:54Speaker 1: Jim Bowden. Reminder, post-game tonight, after Game 6, on the
- 23:59Speaker 1: FT YouTube channel. That will be after ALCS Game 6.
- 24:03Speaker 1: We will be back Thursday. We'll talk to you then.
