- 0:00Speaker 1: Chapter six of the Fall of man of sin and
- 0:06Speaker 1: the punishment thereof one. Our first parents, being seduced by
- 0:12Speaker 1: the subtlety and temptations of Satan, sinned in eating the
- 0:17Speaker 1: forbidden fruit. This their sin, God was pleased, according to
- 0:22Speaker 1: his wise and holy counsel, to permit, having purposed to
- 0:26Speaker 1: order it to his own gloryc. Two. By this sin
- 0:31Speaker 1: they fell from their original righteousness and communion with God,
- 0:35Speaker 1: and so became dead in sin and wholly defiled in
- 0:40Speaker 1: all the parts and faculties of soul and body. Three,
- 0:45Speaker 1: They being the root of all mankind, the guilt of
- 0:48Speaker 1: this sin was imputed, and the same death in sin
- 0:52Speaker 1: and corrupted nature conveyed to all their posterity, descending from
- 0:57Speaker 1: them by ordinary generation. Four. From this original corruption, whereby
- 1:04Speaker 1: we are utterly indisposed, disabled, and made opposite to all good,
- 1:11Speaker 1: and wholly inclined to all evil, do proceed all actual transgressions. Five.
- 1:19Speaker 1: This corruption of nature during this life does remain in
- 1:23Speaker 1: those that are regenerated. And although it be through Christ
- 1:28Speaker 1: pardoned and mortified, yet both itself and all the motions
- 1:33Speaker 1: thereof are truly and properly sin. Six. Every sin, both
- 1:41Speaker 1: original and actual, being a transgression of the righteous law
- 1:46Speaker 1: of God, and contrary thereunto, does in its own nature
- 1:51Speaker 1: bring guilt upon the sinner, whereby he is bound over
- 1:55Speaker 1: to the wrath of God and curse of the Law,
- 1:59Speaker 1: and so made subject to death with all miseries spiritual, temporal,
- 2:06Speaker 1: and eternal. Chapter seven of God's Covenant with Man. One,
- 2:15Speaker 1: The distance between God and the creature is so great
- 2:19Speaker 1: that although reasonable creatures do owe obedience unto Him as
- 2:24Speaker 1: their creator, yet they could never have any fruition of
- 2:29Speaker 1: Him as their blessedness and reward, but by some voluntary
- 2:34Speaker 1: condescension on God's part, which he has been pleased to
- 2:38Speaker 1: express by way of Covenant two. The first covenant made
- 2:44Speaker 1: with man was a covenant of works, wherein life was
- 2:48Speaker 1: promised to Adam and in him to his posterity, upon
- 2:53Speaker 1: condition of perfect and personal obedience. Three. Man, by his
- 3:00Speaker 1: having made himself incapable of life by that covenant, the
- 3:05Speaker 1: Lord was pleased to make a second, commonly called the
- 3:09Speaker 1: Covenant of Grace, wherein he freely offers unto sinners life
- 3:14Speaker 1: and salvation by Jesus Christ, requiring of them faith in
- 3:19Speaker 1: Him that they may be saved, and promising to give
- 3:24Speaker 1: unto all those that are ordained unto eternal life, his
- 3:28Speaker 1: Holy Spirit, to make them willing and able to believe. Four.
- 3:36Speaker 1: This covenant of grace is frequently set forth in scripture
- 3:40Speaker 1: by the name of a Testament in reference to the
- 3:43Speaker 1: death of Jesus Christ the Testator, and to the everlasting
- 3:47Speaker 1: inheritance with all things belonging to it therein bequeathed. Five.
- 3:54Speaker 1: This covenant was differently administered in the time of the
- 3:58Speaker 1: Law and in the time of the God Gospel. Under
- 4:01Speaker 1: the Law, it was administered by promises, prophecies, sacrifices, circumcision,
- 4:07Speaker 1: the paschal lamb, and other types and ordinances delivered to
- 4:12Speaker 1: the people of the Jews, all for signifying Christ to come,
- 4:16Speaker 1: which were for that time sufficient and efficacious through the
- 4:21Speaker 1: operation of the Spirit, to instruct and build up the
- 4:25Speaker 1: elect in faith in the promised Messiah, by whom they
- 4:29Speaker 1: had full remission of sins and eternal salvation, and is
- 4:34Speaker 1: called the Old Testament. Six. Under the Gospel, when Christ
- 4:40Speaker 1: the Substance was exhibited, the ordinances in which this covenant
- 4:45Speaker 1: is dispensed are the preaching of the Word and the
- 4:48Speaker 1: administration of the sacraments of Baptism and the Lord's Supper,
- 4:52Speaker 1: which though fewer in number and administered with more simplicity
- 4:57Speaker 1: and less outward glory, yet in them it is held
- 5:01Speaker 1: forth in more fullness, evidence and spiritual efficacy to all nations,
- 5:08Speaker 1: both Jews and Gentiles, and is called the New Testament.
- 5:13Speaker 1: There are not, therefore, two covenants of grace, differing in substance,
- 5:19Speaker 1: but one and the same, under various dispensations. Chapter eight
- 5:27Speaker 1: of Christ the Mediator. One, It pleased God in his
- 5:33Speaker 1: eternal purpose to choose and ordain the Lord Jesus, his
- 5:37Speaker 1: only begotten son, to be the mediator between God and Man,
- 5:42Speaker 1: the prophet, priest and King, the Head and Savior of
- 5:47Speaker 1: his Church, the heir of all things and judge of
- 5:51Speaker 1: the world, unto whom he did from all eternity give
- 5:55Speaker 1: a people to be his seed and to be by
- 5:59Speaker 1: him in time redeemed, called justified, sanctified, and glorified. Two,
- 6:08Speaker 1: the Son of God, the second person of the Trinity,
- 6:11Speaker 1: being very and eternal God of one substance and equal
- 6:16Speaker 1: with the Father, did, when the fullness of time was come,
- 6:21Speaker 1: take upon him man's nature, with all the essential properties
- 6:26Speaker 1: and common infirmities. Thereof yet without sin, being conceived by
- 6:33Speaker 1: the power of the Holy Ghost in the womb of
- 6:35Speaker 1: the Virgin Mary of her substance, so that two whole,
- 6:40Speaker 1: perfect and distinct natures, the Godhead and the Manhood, were
- 6:46Speaker 1: inseparably joined together in one person, without conversion, composition or confusion.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Which person is very God and very Man, Yet one
- 6:59Speaker 1: crist Christ, the only mediator between God and Man. Three,
- 7:06Speaker 1: the Lord Jesus, in his human nature, thus united to
- 7:10Speaker 1: the Divine, was sanctified and anointed with the Holy Spirit
- 7:16Speaker 1: above measure, having in him all the treasures of wisdom
- 7:19Speaker 1: and knowledge, in whom it pleased the Father that all
- 7:23Speaker 1: fullness should dwell to the end that being wholly harmless, undefiled,
- 7:30Speaker 1: and full of grace and truth, he might be thoroughly
- 7:34Speaker 1: furnished to execute the office of a mediator and surety,
- 7:40Speaker 1: Which office he took not unto himself, but was thereunto
- 7:45Speaker 1: called by his Father, who put all power and judgment
- 7:50Speaker 1: into his hand, and gave him commandment to execute the same.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Four This office the Lord Jim Jesus did most willingly undertake,
- 8:03Speaker 1: which that he might discharge. He was made under the law,
- 8:07Speaker 1: and did perfectly fulfill it. Endured most grievous torments immediately
- 8:14Speaker 1: in his soul, and most painful sufferings in his body,
- 8:19Speaker 1: was crucified and died, was buried and remained under the
- 8:24Speaker 1: power of death, yet saw no corruption. On the third day,
- 8:29Speaker 1: he arose from the dead with the same body in
- 8:33Speaker 1: which he suffered, with which also he ascended into heaven,
- 8:38Speaker 1: and there sits at the right hand of his Father,
- 8:41Speaker 1: making intercession, and shall return to judge men and angels
- 8:46Speaker 1: at the end of the world. Five. The Lord Jesus,
- 8:51Speaker 1: by his perfect obedience and sacrifice of himself, which he
- 8:57Speaker 1: through the Eternal Spirit, once offered up to God, has
- 9:01Speaker 1: fully satisfied the justice of his Father, and purchased not
- 9:06Speaker 1: only reconciliation, but an everlasting inheritance in the Kingdom of
- 9:11Speaker 1: Heaven for those whom the Father has given unto him. Six.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Although the work of redemption was not actually wrought by
- 9:22Speaker 1: Christ till after his incarnation, yet the virtue, efficacy, and
- 9:28Speaker 1: benefits thereof were communicated unto the elect in all ages
- 9:34Speaker 1: successively from the beginning of the world, in and by
- 9:38Speaker 1: those promises, types, and sacrifices, wherein He was revealed and
- 9:44Speaker 1: signified to be the seed of the woman, which should
- 9:47Speaker 1: bruise the serpent's head and the lamb slain from the
- 9:51Speaker 1: beginning of the world, being yesterday and today the same
- 9:56Speaker 1: and forever. Seven, Christ, in the work of mediation, acts
- 10:03Speaker 1: according to both natures, by each nature doing that which
- 10:07Speaker 1: is proper to itself. Yet by reason of the unity
- 10:12Speaker 1: of the person, that which is proper to one nature
- 10:16Speaker 1: is sometimes in scripture attributed to the person denominated by
- 10:20Speaker 1: the other nature. Eight. To all those for whom Christ
- 10:26Speaker 1: has purchased redemption, he does certainly and effectually apply and
- 10:33Speaker 1: communicate the same, making intercession for them and revealing unto
- 10:39Speaker 1: them in and by the word the mysteries of salvation,
- 10:45Speaker 1: effectually persuading them by His spirit to believe and obey,
- 10:50Speaker 1: and governing their hearts by his word and spirit, overcoming
- 10:55Speaker 1: all their enemies by his almighty power and wisdom in
- 10:59Speaker 1: sol such manner and ways as are most consonant to
- 11:04Speaker 1: His wonderful and unsearchable dispensation. Chapter nine of free Will.
- 11:14Speaker 1: One God has endued the will of man with that
- 11:19Speaker 1: natural liberty that is neither forced, nor by any absolute
- 11:24Speaker 1: necessity of nature determined good or evil. Two Man, in
- 11:31Speaker 1: his state of innocency had freedom and power to will
- 11:36Speaker 1: and to do that which was good and well pleasing
- 11:40Speaker 1: to God, but yet mutably so that he might fall
- 11:45Speaker 1: from it. Three, Man, by his fall into a state
- 11:50Speaker 1: of sin, has wholly lost all ability of will to
- 11:55Speaker 1: any spiritual good accompanying salvation. So as a natural man,
- 12:00Speaker 1: being altogether a verse from that good and dead in sin,
- 12:05Speaker 1: is not able by his own strength to convert himself
- 12:10Speaker 1: or to prepare himself thereunto. Four, When God converts a
- 12:16Speaker 1: sinner and translates him into the state of grace, he
- 12:21Speaker 1: frees him from his natural bondage under sin, and by
- 12:26Speaker 1: his grace alone enables him freely to will and to
- 12:31Speaker 1: do that which is spiritually good. Yet so as that
- 12:36Speaker 1: by reason of his remaining corruption, he does not perfectly
- 12:41Speaker 1: or only will that which is good, but does also
- 12:46Speaker 1: will that which is evil. Five, the will of man
- 12:51Speaker 1: is made perfectly and immutably free to do good alone
- 12:56Speaker 1: in the state of glory only. Chapter ten of effectual
- 13:04Speaker 1: calling one all those whom God hath predestinated unto life,
- 13:10Speaker 1: and those only he is pleased in his appointed time
- 13:15Speaker 1: effectually to call by his word and spirit out of
- 13:20Speaker 1: that state of sin. And death in which they are
- 13:23Speaker 1: by nature. Two grace and salvation by Jesus Christ, enlightening
- 13:30Speaker 1: their minds spiritually and savingly to understand the things of God,
- 13:36Speaker 1: taking away their heart of stone and giving unto them
- 13:40Speaker 1: an heart of flesh, renewing their wills, and by his
- 13:45Speaker 1: almighty power determining them to that which is good, and
- 13:50Speaker 1: effectually drawing them to Jesus Christ. Yet so as they
- 13:55Speaker 1: come most freely, being made willing by His grace. Two,
- 14:02Speaker 1: This effectual call is of God's free and special grace alone,
- 14:09Speaker 1: not from anything at all foreseen in man, who is
- 14:13Speaker 1: altogether passive therein until being quickened and renewed by the
- 14:18Speaker 1: Holy Spirit. He is thereby enabled to answer this call
- 14:23Speaker 1: and to embrace the grace offered and conveyed in it.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Three elect Infants dying in infancy are regenerated and saved
- 14:35Speaker 1: by Christ through the Spirit, who works when and where
- 14:39Speaker 1: and how he pleases. So also are all other elect
- 14:44Speaker 1: persons who are incapable of being outwardly called by the
- 14:48Speaker 1: ministry of the Word. Four others not elected, although they
- 14:55Speaker 1: may be called by the ministry of the Word, and
- 14:58Speaker 1: may have some commone operations of the Spirit. Yet they
- 15:02Speaker 1: never truly come unto Christ, and therefore cannot be saved,
- 15:07Speaker 1: much less can men not professing the Christian religion be
- 15:11Speaker 1: saved in any other way. Whatsoever, be they never so
- 15:16Speaker 1: diligent to frame their lives according to the light of
- 15:19Speaker 1: nature and the laws of that religion they do profess,
- 15:23Speaker 1: and to assert and maintain that they may is very
- 15:28Speaker 1: pernicious and to be detested. End of Chapter ten
