- 0:08Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of Cardinal Territory.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Jim Hayes with lance Lynn Kyle Gibson. Lance a little
- 0:16Speaker 1: under the weather. I don't know if he has the
- 0:17Speaker 1: sniffles or whatever, but the kids are sick and so
- 0:21Speaker 1: we've got a little chaos in the home front, so
- 0:25Speaker 1: he's not with us today. Cardinals take two or three
- 0:29Speaker 1: from San Diego to Padres ROMs. Cards open a three
- 0:34Speaker 1: game set with a weird off day in Saturday on
- 0:37Speaker 1: Saturday because of the World Cup. But that's in Kansas
- 0:40Speaker 1: City against the Royals. But we're going to start with
- 0:43Speaker 1: the Cardinal offense has gotten a little bit of a
- 0:47Speaker 1: jolt from guys at the bottom of the batting order.
- 0:50Speaker 1: We did a stat in the game the other day.
- 0:53Speaker 1: The bottom of the batting order this month is hitting
- 0:56Speaker 1: two sixty eight around there with a bunch of RBI.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Last month in May they were hitting around two hundred
- 1:04Speaker 1: and not really contributing.
- 1:05Speaker 2: So Lanst, my question to you is if.
- 1:08Speaker 1: You look at Church, who's back off the aisle and
- 1:11Speaker 1: now walking because they've encouraged him to get on base
- 1:14Speaker 1: any way he can and Blaze Jordan, who has started
- 1:18Speaker 1: his career off very well with homer or triple. He's
- 1:22Speaker 1: knocked in a bunch of runs. Looked okay at third
- 1:25Speaker 1: base too. But it does make the whole lineup a
- 1:28Speaker 1: little different. Do you look at them differently with the
- 1:30Speaker 1: bottom of the lineup sort of beefed up.
- 1:33Speaker 2: A little bit?
- 1:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I think you look at the bottom of the
- 1:36Speaker 3: lineup as something that can be pests for starting pitchers, right.
- 1:39Speaker 3: I think before it kind of was a spot where
- 1:43Speaker 3: the bottom of the lineup was Okay, if we get
- 1:46Speaker 3: down there, we can stop before we get back to
- 1:48Speaker 3: the top. These guys put the bat on the ball,
- 1:51Speaker 3: they take their walks, they're not afraid to do things.
- 1:53Speaker 3: I think they both have shown in the minor leagues
- 1:55Speaker 3: that they can hit for average, do a lot of
- 1:57Speaker 3: different things. So I think it's a good fit for
- 2:00Speaker 3: what they've got going on. It's a good they're both
- 2:03Speaker 3: great fits for what they have roster wise, where they
- 2:05Speaker 3: can play multiple positions, hit different spots of the lineup,
- 2:09Speaker 3: do a lot of different things.
- 2:10Speaker 4: So they're ballplayers.
- 2:12Speaker 3: I think you're looking at what they've established at the
- 2:15Speaker 3: big league level this year is they want guys who
- 2:17Speaker 3: can play and hit any different spot and do a
- 2:20Speaker 3: lot of different things, and then your core guys carry
- 2:22Speaker 3: you when times get tough. But when these guys are rolling,
- 2:26Speaker 3: then they take some stress off the top because they're
- 2:29Speaker 3: doing what they're doing on the bottom lineup. And as
- 2:30Speaker 3: a starting pitcher, when you're dealing with stuff like that,
- 2:33Speaker 3: especially newer guys to the league that you don't really
- 2:36Speaker 3: know how to attack and they don't swing and miss
- 2:38Speaker 3: and don't strike out as much as you would like,
- 2:41Speaker 3: it really becomes a pin in your butt when you're
- 2:43Speaker 3: trying to start or navigate through the lineup because you're like, man,
- 2:46Speaker 3: I don't know how to deal with these guys, and
- 2:48Speaker 3: if I don't get the guy out I'm supposed to
- 2:50Speaker 3: get out in front of them, then it can turn
- 2:51Speaker 3: into a bad inning or before you would get the
- 2:55Speaker 3: strikeout or you would you know, finish the inning because
- 2:58Speaker 3: you knew what you were getting into. So right now
- 3:00Speaker 3: they're becoming a problem one, you know, one through nine,
- 3:02Speaker 3: through their through their lineup, and that's what you want
- 3:05Speaker 3: as a team. You want to be a problem one
- 3:07Speaker 3: through nine. Like we've said it multiple times throughout this
- 3:10Speaker 3: show is that's what Milwaukee is. Milwaukee isn't one guy
- 3:14Speaker 3: carrying the team. It's one through nine of people that
- 3:16Speaker 3: are just a pain in your ass when you're trying
- 3:18Speaker 3: to get through the lineup. They don't strike out, put
- 3:20Speaker 3: the ball in play, they take their walks, they put
- 3:22Speaker 3: the ball, they hit the ball in.
- 3:23Speaker 4: The gaps, they hit for doubles, whatever. They're not all
- 3:26Speaker 4: or nothing.
- 3:26Speaker 3: And when you have a lineup that's not all all
- 3:29Speaker 3: or nothing, it makes getting through you harder, and pitch
- 3:33Speaker 3: counts go up, and it's just and next thing you know,
- 3:35Speaker 3: you're in the bullpen earlier. And all in all, it
- 3:38Speaker 3: goes back for pitching staffs on the other side.
- 3:41Speaker 1: From a pitching standpoint, as you're sizing up a lineup
- 3:45Speaker 1: and let's say a lineup has, you know, bottom third
- 3:48Speaker 1: or last four guys that don't hit, and all of
- 3:51Speaker 1: a sudden that it's changed around all these guys can do.
- 3:54Speaker 2: So how much stress does.
- 3:55Speaker 4: That put on a pitcher?
- 3:57Speaker 3: Well, so, when the middle of a lineup is your
- 4:00Speaker 3: problem in your bottom is week right, you know it's like, Okay,
- 4:03Speaker 3: I'm cool with walking this guy and I'm cool with
- 4:05Speaker 3: not dealing with this guy here, and because I know
- 4:08Speaker 3: I can get this guy out or this guy out
- 4:10Speaker 3: so when you navigate through a lineup, it's like, hey,
- 4:12Speaker 3: I don't want this guy to hurt me. I know
- 4:14Speaker 3: I can get this guy out here. I know I
- 4:16Speaker 3: can get this guy out here type of thing.
- 4:19Speaker 4: But when you.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Don't really know what you're in for, especially when you
- 4:23Speaker 3: have younger players, because you don't really have a book
- 4:25Speaker 3: on them yet as much as you like, or your
- 4:28Speaker 3: personal book on him, yet it's not there. It's it
- 4:31Speaker 3: becomes a little bit more like, hey, okay, I can't
- 4:34Speaker 3: just give away a base runner. I can't just do
- 4:36Speaker 3: this because I'm not And then it makes those pitches
- 4:39Speaker 3: a little bit they mean a little bit I say,
- 4:41Speaker 3: they mean a little bit more, but they make them
- 4:42Speaker 3: a little bit more strangious. So you might make a
- 4:44Speaker 3: mistake because you know, hey, I don't really know what
- 4:47Speaker 3: this guy's doing or how he's going to go about it,
- 4:48Speaker 3: but I also know he's.
- 4:49Speaker 4: Not going to swing a miss, and I can't just
- 4:51Speaker 4: you know, bullying.
- 4:52Speaker 3: But if you have a bottom line up you know
- 4:53Speaker 3: you can kind of run through, then you can navigate
- 4:56Speaker 3: your way through the top not make mistakes.
- 4:58Speaker 4: And not give into any of those.
- 5:00Speaker 3: But if the bottom lineup is driving in runs, getting
- 5:04Speaker 3: base hits, you know, doing the RBI thing like they're
- 5:06Speaker 3: doing taking their walks. Next thing, you know, you have
- 5:09Speaker 3: to turn it back over to the top. That's when
- 5:10Speaker 3: you get yourself in trouble as a certain picture.
- 5:13Speaker 1: And that brings us to our Daily Danger segment, brought
- 5:16Speaker 1: to you by Fan Duel.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Nailed it. I nailed it this time, all right.
- 5:24Speaker 1: The Cards facing a lefty tonight, Noah Cameron. He gave
- 5:28Speaker 1: up a couple of bombs and the last start, Jordan
- 5:31Speaker 1: Walker hasn't homered in a few games. So I'm going,
- 5:34Speaker 1: Jordan Walker, that's my daily dinger.
- 5:37Speaker 4: You're going for it. Yeah, I'll go. I'll go, I'll
- 5:39Speaker 4: go blaze, I'll ride the kid. Let's go. Let's get
- 5:42Speaker 4: you one.
- 5:43Speaker 3: You know I'll go. I'll go. You know, you went
- 5:45Speaker 3: the obvious. I've been doing the obvious in the past,
- 5:47Speaker 3: So I'll go. Let's go the young kid and uh
- 5:50Speaker 3: get himself, get himself another one.
- 5:52Speaker 1: He's looked good. I mean, this is a kid who's
- 5:55Speaker 1: hit at every single level. I think the question mark
- 5:59Speaker 1: was playing third base last night. He made a couple
- 6:02Speaker 1: of really nice defensive plays. Although we haven't seen him
- 6:05Speaker 1: have to throw hard accurate to catch a guy at
- 6:09Speaker 1: first base.
- 6:09Speaker 2: But so far, have you liked what you've seen from
- 6:12Speaker 2: from Blade?
- 6:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:13Speaker 3: I think when he was acquired and all that you
- 6:15Speaker 3: look at his numbers, I was like, man, this guy's
- 6:17Speaker 3: kind of a kind of a ballplayer. I didn't you know,
- 6:20Speaker 3: I haven't hadn't seen him in person yet, but I
- 6:22Speaker 3: was looking at all his numbers. One on my train
- 6:24Speaker 3: of I was like, this guy's going to play at
- 6:26Speaker 3: the biggig level.
- 6:27Speaker 4: Is he going to.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Play great defense? I don't know, but he's gonna play
- 6:30Speaker 3: a enough defense where his bat I think, becomes something
- 6:34Speaker 3: that you can utilize in your lineup. I liked him,
- 6:38Speaker 3: and then when we first got him, I was like, man,
- 6:39Speaker 3: you're gonna have you can have Burley at first, him
- 6:42Speaker 3: at DH, first DH, and then he can place some
- 6:44Speaker 3: third when he needs to.
- 6:45Speaker 4: Burley might be able to go to left who he
- 6:47Speaker 4: needs to.
- 6:47Speaker 3: So I like the acquisition at the time, and I
- 6:51Speaker 3: think we're starting to see other things that he's capable
- 6:53Speaker 3: of doing. If he can play an average defensive third
- 6:56Speaker 3: base and do the things he can do at the
- 6:58Speaker 3: plate that he's done in the minor league, he's going
- 7:00Speaker 3: to be a real asset to this team, and he
- 7:02Speaker 3: kind of goes really good and fits really well with
- 7:05Speaker 3: what they've got with Burley and Herrera, and like it's
- 7:08Speaker 3: a really good fit for the organization and what they've done.
- 7:12Speaker 3: So I like that trade pickup because I think it's
- 7:14Speaker 3: kind of a I think when that trade happened, everyone
- 7:17Speaker 3: was like, Okay, you know, but I was like, man,
- 7:20Speaker 3: you go look at his numbers. The kid hits. Hitters
- 7:22Speaker 3: always hit. Now, do they always play defense? No, they do,
- 7:26Speaker 3: not always lay defensive. But I think he can play
- 7:29Speaker 3: enough defense to where he does what we need him
- 7:32Speaker 3: to do, and that's what you need.
- 7:34Speaker 1: So you're taking Blaze home, taking the Jordan Walker, and
- 7:39Speaker 1: swim for the fences with FanDuel checking out at FanDuel

- 8:02Speaker 5: Gambling problem caller tax one eight hundred gambler Tight.
- 8:07Speaker 1: That was nice and tight. All right, let's talk Dustin man.
- 8:11Speaker 1: As you know, he had pitched really well this season.
- 8:15Speaker 1: He had a no hitter going earlier in the season
- 8:19Speaker 1: than lost it in his last start Monday against San Diego. Again,
- 8:24Speaker 1: they're a mess, They're an absolute mess. But he was
- 8:26Speaker 1: as good as he's as he's been. He said, it
- 8:29Speaker 1: might have been the best outing of his career. He
- 8:31Speaker 1: turns in a complete game, one hit, shut outstanding. Now,
- 8:36Speaker 1: let's be honest. Dustin May signed a one year deal
- 8:39Speaker 1: with an option a mutual option to the Cardinals to
- 8:42Speaker 1: try to get his career back on track, and he's
- 8:44Speaker 1: done it now. After the game, he said, look, this
- 8:48Speaker 1: team has rejuvenated me, right. The young energy has made
- 8:53Speaker 1: me feel more energetic, and I'm pitching really well. So
- 8:58Speaker 1: everyone who's watching the Cardinals that's a fan that thanks
- 9:02Speaker 1: Derek for the Detective is like, did you hear that
- 9:05Speaker 1: he wants to stay? And look, he's due twenty million
- 9:10Speaker 1: next year. The Cardinals are in a rebuild. The chances
- 9:13Speaker 1: are he's probably gonna get flipped for a lot of
- 9:15Speaker 1: young pieces. What does Lance Lynn say about what's ahead
- 9:19Speaker 1: for Dustin May?
- 9:21Speaker 4: I think he is telling you I'm healthy and.
- 9:24Speaker 3: I'm happy, right and whenever when that's starting, pitcher is
- 9:27Speaker 3: healthy and happy and they're throwing the ball, well, you
- 9:29Speaker 3: are rejuvenated.
- 9:31Speaker 4: He's twenty eight years old.
- 9:33Speaker 3: There's a mutual option, so neither side ever both sides
- 9:38Speaker 3: never pick up a mutual option, so everyone needs to
- 9:41Speaker 3: relax on the option situation.
- 9:42Speaker 4: That's a no go.
- 9:43Speaker 3: So you have to start breaking it down for him,
- 9:46Speaker 3: and his thought process is, Okay, I'm going to have
- 9:48Speaker 3: a guy that's going to go to free agency. I'm
- 9:51Speaker 3: going to have to give him the qualifying offer that's
- 9:54Speaker 3: going to be twenty three ish million dollars. I think
- 9:56Speaker 3: they're they're saying that's going to be so I'm only
- 10:00Speaker 3: I'm going to get one one prospect for him. What
- 10:03Speaker 3: I don't know what they get in the in the
- 10:05Speaker 3: qualifying offer. Is it like a supplemental first or something
- 10:07Speaker 3: around there. So you're going to get one second round
- 10:11Speaker 3: draft pick, give or take, or can you get multiple
- 10:15Speaker 3: like guys that are going to be there for the future.
- 10:19Speaker 3: So that's where they have to weigh, right, and if
- 10:21Speaker 3: it's it's also it's say, hey, is he going to
- 10:23Speaker 3: carry us to a World Series? And I only get
- 10:26Speaker 3: this too. So there's a lot of things they have
- 10:28Speaker 3: to navigate here on what's best for the future of
- 10:31Speaker 3: the team and this and that and or it's like, hey,
- 10:34Speaker 3: we loving we want him to be around. Here's twenty
- 10:36Speaker 3: five million dollars a year for the next three to
- 10:38Speaker 3: four years, because that's what it's going to take to
- 10:40Speaker 3: get him to stay and not go to the free market.
- 10:42Speaker 3: So I think the only way he stays is if
- 10:44Speaker 3: they gave him extension now to getting through is thirty
- 10:47Speaker 3: two season right? And the question is is have they
- 10:50Speaker 3: seen enough.
- 10:51Speaker 4: To do that?
- 10:52Speaker 3: And if they haven't seen enough to do that, then
- 10:54Speaker 3: they have to see is it worth just getting a
- 10:57Speaker 3: qualifying offer pick or is it worth getting maybe two
- 11:00Speaker 3: three prospects. We know what they're about because they've been
- 11:03Speaker 3: in the minor leagues and we can see him a
- 11:05Speaker 3: little bit.
- 11:05Speaker 4: They're not college or high school kids.
- 11:08Speaker 1: So how how would you do let's fix So he's
- 11:11Speaker 1: twenty eight, he wants the bag, right, he wants multiple years.
- 11:16Speaker 3: I go to him, I go to him right now,
- 11:18Speaker 3: and I say, hey, so's twenty eight, So we've got
- 11:20Speaker 3: twenty nine, thirty, thirty one, thirty two, So that's a
- 11:22Speaker 3: four year deal. Thirty two is my number I'm gonna
- 11:25Speaker 3: get him a four year deal, and I'm gonna see
- 11:27Speaker 3: what it takes.
- 11:28Speaker 4: And if the numbers anywhere south is twenty.
- 11:31Speaker 3: Five or south, it's a no brainer for the Cardinals
- 11:34Speaker 3: because age and waste throwing the ball.
- 11:36Speaker 4: You know, injuries are gonna happen, that's part of the
- 11:38Speaker 4: game and all that.
- 11:39Speaker 3: But if you look at what you you know, Sunny
- 11:42Speaker 3: Gray at thirty three got twenty five a year or
- 11:44Speaker 3: something like that. You know, so I think if you
- 11:48Speaker 3: can get him for under twenty five a year or
- 11:49Speaker 3: twenty five or under a year for the next four years,
- 11:52Speaker 3: you do it. And it's like, hey, where else are
- 11:54Speaker 3: you spending money right now? Right, you know you're gonna
- 11:56Speaker 3: need a guy.
- 11:57Speaker 4: He's already in house.
- 11:58Speaker 3: So if you're not going to extending, then you don't
- 12:00Speaker 3: think he can be this guy for the future. If
- 12:01Speaker 3: you don't think he'd be this guy for the future,
- 12:03Speaker 3: you trade him mice hot and get the most.
- 12:04Speaker 2: You can for in So that makes sense to me.
- 12:08Speaker 1: So the Cardinals right now, as we said, eight games
- 12:10Speaker 1: over five hundred, right, some people say if you're ten
- 12:13Speaker 1: games over, then you start planning for the postseason. Hi
- 12:17Speaker 1: Bloom has said this is a long term rebuilt, and
- 12:20Speaker 1: we want to be a team that can compete for
- 12:24Speaker 1: a World Series every year, not just sneak in as
- 12:26Speaker 1: a wild garden see what happens. But they are playing
- 12:30Speaker 1: really well and they have solidified that line up. Dustin
- 12:34Speaker 1: May has been everything that a number one should be
- 12:37Speaker 1: for the Cardinals, and you have these young guys who
- 12:40Speaker 1: are emerging Burley's great walkers great. Do you think he'll
- 12:44Speaker 1: rethink that and maybe think about adding something without jeopardizing
- 12:50Speaker 1: that long term plan.
- 12:52Speaker 3: I think when you look at the long term plane,
- 12:54Speaker 3: it's here and it's already you already kind of know
- 12:56Speaker 3: what you have. So now you kind of go to
- 12:58Speaker 3: like double A right, and say, what can I be
- 13:02Speaker 3: okay with to move to get maybe the reliever with
- 13:07Speaker 3: multiple years to control these things of multiple years control
- 13:11Speaker 3: that can.
- 13:12Speaker 4: Get me over the hump.
- 13:13Speaker 3: Maybe another starter because you're always going to be able
- 13:16Speaker 3: to refresh your system every year in the draft, right,
- 13:19Speaker 3: So that's kind of the way to think about it.
- 13:21Speaker 3: With draft and international sign as. You can refresh your
- 13:24Speaker 3: system every year if you draft well and you sign
- 13:27Speaker 3: well in the international market. So what do I have
- 13:30Speaker 3: in high A, double A and maybe even in Triple
- 13:33Speaker 3: A that's blocked that people have a high value on
- 13:35Speaker 3: that I can get something that makes my big league
- 13:37Speaker 3: team not only good now or better now, that fills
- 13:40Speaker 3: the spots we need now but next year and the
- 13:42Speaker 3: next year. That I also know the cost control of
- 13:44Speaker 3: these guys, so I don't have to go overpay in
- 13:46Speaker 3: the free agent market for a back end reliever or
- 13:49Speaker 3: multiple back end relievers or another you know, a front
- 13:51Speaker 3: end starter.
- 13:52Speaker 4: So using the I would say, the logjam of.
- 13:57Speaker 3: Things that you have in the minor leagues to piece
- 14:00Speaker 3: what you need together at the big league level and
- 14:02Speaker 3: knowing that they will be there for multiple years at
- 14:04Speaker 3: the bigig level, that's kind of what you got the
- 14:06Speaker 3: weigh So, I mean, I think that's where he's at
- 14:08Speaker 3: right now because the big league team is so gump
- 14:10Speaker 3: it really is.
- 14:11Speaker 4: So what can you do with your.
- 14:13Speaker 3: I mean, they're not any older than the guys that
- 14:15Speaker 3: are in Triple A and DOAA and the grand scheme
- 14:17Speaker 3: of things, So pick who you want, use the other
- 14:21Speaker 3: guys to get the things you need to make those
- 14:23Speaker 3: guys better at the big league level, and then next thing,
- 14:25Speaker 3: you know, hey, we got a sustainable thing. By the
- 14:27Speaker 3: time in three four years comes around when these guys
- 14:30Speaker 3: maybe go to free agency or are gone. You have
- 14:32Speaker 3: three years of draft and free agencies or you know,
- 14:35Speaker 3: international pools to fill up your minor leagues, especially at
- 14:39Speaker 3: that lower level.
- 14:41Speaker 1: So you've said a lot of smart things on this podcast,
- 14:44Speaker 1: and smart things when you were a player, and I
- 14:47Speaker 1: was asking a dumb questions. But the thing that I
- 14:49Speaker 1: quote you a lot on and I know other people
- 14:52Speaker 1: have said it, but I say, Lance told me this
- 14:55Speaker 1: baseball always evens out, right, those are your words, Baseball
- 15:00Speaker 1: always evens out. We're at June seventeenth right now. We've
- 15:04Speaker 1: seen a lot of good baseball from the Cardinals, and
- 15:06Speaker 1: I think they're headed in a good direction. Do you
- 15:09Speaker 1: think this is who they are? Can we say this
- 15:12Speaker 1: team is a playoff team right now?
- 15:14Speaker 3: I think we've seen what their mo is right, So
- 15:17Speaker 3: if fully healthy and the way they play the game
- 15:20Speaker 3: and the way they know what they're doing. Yes, The
- 15:23Speaker 3: question that always comes up is do we have enough
- 15:26Speaker 3: depth in arms and things of that nature that we're
- 15:30Speaker 3: gonna need come second half. Every one of these guys,
- 15:32Speaker 3: in the most part, has never thrown a complete season
- 15:35Speaker 3: in the big leagues. They've never thrown over one hundred
- 15:38Speaker 3: and fifty innings or have never had over, you know,
- 15:40Speaker 3: forty relief appearances in the big league level and stuff
- 15:43Speaker 3: like that. So when you look at the second half
- 15:45Speaker 3: of this season, you're going to have to find guys
- 15:47Speaker 3: that are going to have that are going to help
- 15:49Speaker 3: these guys take a breath, like take a breather as
- 15:52Speaker 3: you go down the stretch to actually push through the end.
- 15:55Speaker 3: So with health and how they play the game, this
- 15:58Speaker 3: issually are but health is going to be a factor
- 16:01Speaker 3: as eear goes on. It always is, unfortunately. But also
- 16:04Speaker 3: none of these guys have played a full year in
- 16:06Speaker 3: the major leagues. A lot of the relievers haven't, so
- 16:09Speaker 3: you're gonna have to give them some help or it's
- 16:12Speaker 3: gonna be a second half of Hey, everyone's out of
- 16:14Speaker 3: gas and we've got no one else to help. So
- 16:17Speaker 3: that's the fine line where where or that's the line
- 16:19Speaker 3: that Hine's gonna have to pick right now is I
- 16:21Speaker 3: know these guys are gonna get tired because they've never
- 16:23Speaker 3: done it, so you can't bank on them just keep
- 16:26Speaker 3: doing what they're doing. So it's like, what can I
- 16:28Speaker 3: give them that I'm not depleting the whole farm, so
- 16:31Speaker 3: they have a chance, but also it's things that I
- 16:33Speaker 3: have to use in the future too. So he's in
- 16:36Speaker 3: a weird spot because you always want to go for
- 16:38Speaker 3: it when you're in the playoff push, but you also
- 16:40Speaker 3: you know you don't want to go for it with
- 16:42Speaker 3: guys that are going to be gone after the year.
- 16:44Speaker 3: You can't do rentals. He's not in a place to
- 16:46Speaker 3: do rentals. He's in a place where how can I
- 16:48Speaker 3: flip for things that I'm going to use? And where's
- 16:50Speaker 3: my depth in the minor leagues to help me too?
- 16:52Speaker 3: Do I have enough arms? Do I have these things
- 16:54Speaker 3: to give myself enough chance to give these guys breathers
- 16:58Speaker 3: as I go.
- 16:58Speaker 4: Down the stretch.
- 17:00Speaker 1: You know, one of the things I think is a misnomer,
- 17:02Speaker 1: like if you're a fan, you're like, these guys don't
- 17:06Speaker 1: want to add. They trust each other. They think they're
- 17:08Speaker 1: good enough now. And players will say that publicly, like
- 17:12Speaker 1: you know, like, no, we're confident, But if you get
- 17:15Speaker 1: them away from a camera, away from the mic, they're.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Like, we need this, we need this, we need.
- 17:20Speaker 1: This now because we want to go in and we
- 17:23Speaker 1: want to win. Isn't that the true story that if
- 17:25Speaker 1: you ask players inside, they know what they need and
- 17:28Speaker 1: they know when.
- 17:29Speaker 4: They need something. Yeah, especially older players. Older players got
- 17:33Speaker 4: at ideas. There's no other way to say.
- 17:36Speaker 3: When you're young, you're like, man, I just hope they're
- 17:38Speaker 3: not they don't trade somebody to send me down the
- 17:40Speaker 3: minor leagues.
- 17:41Speaker 4: When you're older, you're like, hey, love this kid.
- 17:43Speaker 3: He's got a chance to be really good, but he's
- 17:45Speaker 3: not ready yet to help us or this or that.
- 17:47Speaker 4: So I think you start looking around.
- 17:49Speaker 3: You're like, man, we could probably upgrade here, we could
- 17:51Speaker 3: probably upgrade here. But I think you when you look
- 17:54Speaker 3: at everything at the deadline, it's always based around pitching.
- 17:58Speaker 3: If they can find controllable pitching that fits into what
- 18:03Speaker 3: they do without burning their big league roster at all,
- 18:06Speaker 3: they've got a really good chance to keep this run
- 18:10Speaker 3: going and push it into the playoffs. So I think
- 18:12Speaker 3: when you look at position player wise, it's falling. It's
- 18:15Speaker 3: kind of fell in their lap in a weird way.
- 18:17Speaker 3: JJ's donwell he's supposed to do. You're kind of seeing
- 18:20Speaker 3: everyone when I Jordan Walker becoming the Jordan Walker that
- 18:24Speaker 3: we all hoped and thought, you know, he would be.
- 18:26Speaker 3: When he first came up has arrived, so a lot
- 18:29Speaker 3: of things have fallen in their lap. Position player wise,
- 18:32Speaker 3: now it's like, okay, do I have enough depth arms?
- 18:36Speaker 3: And how can I make sure I have enough death
- 18:38Speaker 3: arms to make sure these things are going because I mean,
- 18:40Speaker 3: even look at position player wise in the minor league,
- 18:43Speaker 3: they still have guys that can come up and contribute
- 18:45Speaker 3: at the big league level, like you know, you Hope
- 18:48Speaker 3: Gorman and Vic and you got Baia's down there hitting
- 18:51Speaker 3: four home runs a night. They've got guys that can
- 18:53Speaker 3: help them offensively. So I don't think they need to
- 18:55Speaker 3: go out and get a middle of warm up that
- 18:57Speaker 3: they just need to keep piecing this together the way
- 18:59Speaker 3: they're doing because they have guys that can do it.
- 19:01Speaker 4: Now. It's arms will wear down as the year goes on.
- 19:05Speaker 2: What do we last topic?
- 19:09Speaker 1: I wanted to ask about Josh for Bias because what
- 19:11Speaker 1: he's doing is really incredible. Right, you mentioned four homers
- 19:16Speaker 1: the other day. He's got twenty three homers on the season,
- 19:19Speaker 1: tops in the International League. I think it's number two
- 19:22Speaker 1: in all of minor league baseball. His ops is nine
- 19:27Speaker 1: to seventy six. Now, a lot of other teams would
- 19:30Speaker 1: have rushed this guy up. The Cardinals want to be patient,
- 19:33Speaker 1: but also we're gonna put them because right now the
- 19:36Speaker 1: outfield is a pretty good mix for the Cardinals.
- 19:39Speaker 2: So and everyone's like.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Maybe today, tonight, tomorrow, whenever he's gonna have a three
- 19:45Speaker 1: homer game. People are like, why isn't this guy up?
- 19:47Speaker 1: How would you handle that?
- 19:50Speaker 3: Well right now, if you're not going to bring a
- 19:51Speaker 3: guy up like that that's gonna play every day, you
- 19:54Speaker 3: don't bring him up. I always hated when then we
- 19:57Speaker 3: brought our best prospect up and we just you bring
- 20:01Speaker 3: them up, you put them in the lineup, and you
- 20:02Speaker 3: put him somewhere in the five six hole, like you're here,
- 20:05Speaker 3: like that's how you do it. If you bring him
- 20:07Speaker 3: up and they're like, oh, well, we don't know when
- 20:09Speaker 3: he's gonna play, we don't know how it fits, blah
- 20:11Speaker 3: blah blah, and then you're wasting your time, you're wasting
- 20:13Speaker 3: his time, and you're wasting at bats where he can
- 20:15Speaker 3: get better every day. So when you look at that
- 20:18Speaker 3: lineup and says, hey, he's gonna be our every day
- 20:21Speaker 3: left right center fielder or whatever you or wherever you
- 20:24Speaker 3: want to play him, and he's gonna bat in the
- 20:26Speaker 3: five hole.
- 20:26Speaker 4: That's when you bring him up.
- 20:27Speaker 3: And I don't know if they're there yet, but I
- 20:29Speaker 3: also think that there's gonna become a time where it's like, Okay,
- 20:33Speaker 3: let's do this because he's he's he's doing too well,
- 20:36Speaker 3: not too so. I think it's right now. It's like
- 20:39Speaker 3: you said, it's they've been playing too well and everything's
- 20:41Speaker 3: been kind of pieced together where it's like we don't
- 20:43Speaker 3: have to uproot anything. But when it comes at time,
- 20:46Speaker 3: that's what you have to do with the guys like that.
- 20:48Speaker 3: It's hey, you're hearing the big leagues now and you're playing.
- 20:50Speaker 3: Don't come up here and sit on the bench and
- 20:52Speaker 3: and lose any mojo because we don't have time for that.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Trade deadline is gonna be really interesting because they can
- 20:58Speaker 1: sort of thin the herd out and get stuff return,
- 21:00Speaker 1: turn and make room for guys that they want to
- 21:03Speaker 1: make room for.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Lance.
- 21:04Speaker 3: They can trade, they can trade what you're talking about
- 21:07Speaker 3: in trading, and they can still they can still be
- 21:09Speaker 3: a playoff team. I've seen that, and they have the
- 21:11Speaker 3: ability to do that, and especially if they get the
- 21:13Speaker 3: right things back that replace the things and you have
- 21:16Speaker 3: them for the future.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Fun and it's a good situation to be end. Lance
- 21:20Speaker 1: always a pleasure. We wish Kyle Gibson speedy health recovery,
- 21:25Speaker 1: but Lance, thanks for the time. That's going to do
- 21:27Speaker 1: it for this edition of Cardinal Territory. We'll see you
- 21:30Speaker 1: next time. Hopefully that episode won't suck
