Latest / Twin Cities Territory / Twins have 'no plans' to trade Byron Buxton; rough start vs. Dodgers
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Well, the Dodgers are good. It turns out they take
- 0:04Speaker 1: the first two games from the Twins of this three
- 0:06Speaker 1: game set with one more still to play. It's Wednesday,
- 0:09Speaker 1: June twenty fourth. This is Twin City's Territory, Your Minnesota
- 0:12Speaker 1: Twins podcast on the Foul Territory Network. I'm Zach Pearce
- 0:16Speaker 1: if the Athletic, joined as always by Dan Hayes, the Athletics,
- 0:19Speaker 1: Minnesota Twins beat writer, and Tyler Duffy, longtime Major leaguer
- 0:22Speaker 1: who has a tea time in a little bit, so
- 0:23Speaker 1: we better get going here.
- 0:25Speaker 2: We will.
- 0:26Speaker 1: We will talk about this Dodger series and.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Some of the things that have happened in a little bit,
- 0:30Speaker 2: but we wanted.
- 0:30Speaker 1: To start first with a subject that we talk about
- 0:34Speaker 1: a lot and probably will all the way up till
- 0:36Speaker 1: August third. But there was a new development in the
- 0:39Speaker 1: ongoing will they won't they trade? Byron Buxton Saga. Yesterday,
- 0:44Speaker 1: Dan as Jeremy Zol Twins GM spoke and said that
- 0:48Speaker 1: the Twins have no plans to trade him. You were there,
- 0:52Speaker 1: What was the context there? What was your impression of
- 0:55Speaker 1: his comments?
- 0:56Speaker 3: The first thing he said was, Hey, Atlanta radio hosts,
- 1:00Speaker 3: We're not trading Byron Bucks. He just he didn't say that.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Dan said that.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Yeah. Basically, like, the Twins did something that no teams
- 1:15Speaker 3: really ever do. And it's funny because there's been some
- 1:19Speaker 3: of the responses I've seen on liner or paranoia, like oh,
- 1:22Speaker 3: they left wiggle room in this. There's look how they
- 1:25Speaker 3: said this. The Twins just did something that no team
- 1:29Speaker 3: ever does with any player, Like it's been a while
- 1:31Speaker 3: since you've heard we won't trade this guy. And basically
- 1:35Speaker 3: they came out and said we have no plans to
- 1:37Speaker 3: trade Byron Bucks. And in fact, this is Jeremy's ohle,
- 1:40Speaker 3: what we're doing right now is every week we get
- 1:42Speaker 3: a media update on injuries, on Twins' injuries, and there
- 1:47Speaker 3: wasn't even a single question asked. Jeremy went out of
- 1:50Speaker 3: his way to say, hey, before we do the injury stuff,
- 1:52Speaker 3: I want to get out here and get out in
- 1:54Speaker 3: front of this and say this right now. You know,
- 1:56Speaker 3: in relation to Byron's comments last week, we have no
- 2:00Speaker 3: plans to trade Byron buckson we have no plans to explore,
- 2:05Speaker 3: we don't want to listen on this. Basically, we understand
- 2:09Speaker 3: why speculation happens. And he said basically, it's all unfounded.
- 2:15Speaker 3: We're not trading Byron Buckston, and it was like definitive
- 2:18Speaker 3: for a team to do that is very rare. But
- 2:21Speaker 3: there's a reason why they did it. Was last offseason
- 2:25Speaker 3: they didn't do it, and Byron had committed to them
- 2:28Speaker 3: after the deadline and set on a Twin for life.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Byron had said it before the deadline last year. Like
- 2:32Speaker 3: you know, Byron said it a bunch of times, and
- 2:34Speaker 3: he was frustrated the Twins didn't say it back in
- 2:38Speaker 3: the offseason when the rumors were circling once again. He
- 2:41Speaker 3: was pissed that his name was out there in November,
- 2:45Speaker 3: and he let us know on the first day of
- 2:47Speaker 3: spring training that it bothered him, Like I know he knew.
- 2:50Speaker 3: I know he knew privately that they weren't planning to
- 2:52Speaker 3: trade him. Because people reach out to your agent and say, look,
- 2:55Speaker 3: there's nothing here, but teams never say never. They just
- 2:59Speaker 3: don't do it. It takes so like what if the
- 3:02Speaker 3: Dodgers called tomorrow and said, we'll offer you show hey
- 3:05Speaker 3: o Tani, and we'll offer you Freddie Freeman and we'll
- 3:09Speaker 3: pay the bulk of their salaries. But you got to
- 3:11Speaker 3: trade a Byron, Like you don't usually hamstring yourself like this,
- 3:15Speaker 3: but the Twins love Byron Buckston and they've gone out
- 3:19Speaker 3: of their way to say we love Byron Buckston. We're
- 3:21Speaker 3: keeping him and it was in part to appease what
- 3:25Speaker 3: he was frustrated about in spring training. And it's a
- 3:28Speaker 3: strong statement and there's no wiggle room here. They're not
- 3:32Speaker 3: trading Byron bucks.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Just to put the quote on the screen for everybody.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Dan wrote about this on The Athletic. You can go
- 3:38Speaker 1: there right now and read about it. We'll put the
- 3:40Speaker 1: link to the story in the description on the podcast
- 3:43Speaker 1: and YouTube. But if you're watching right now, the quotes
- 3:45Speaker 1: on the screen, this is from Jeremy's oarl Twins GM.
- 3:48Speaker 1: We have no plans to trade Byron. It's not something
- 3:50Speaker 1: we're exploring. It's not something we plan to explore. We
- 3:53Speaker 1: continue to have productive discussions. Buxton was very clear on
- 3:56Speaker 1: that point last week from my seat from the Twins perspective,
- 3:59Speaker 1: that's not something we plan to explore. I yes, obviously,
- 4:05Speaker 1: the you know gms know how to leave that door
- 4:09Speaker 1: forever cracked, and like, I have no plans to golf
- 4:13Speaker 1: this week, but if my buddy calls with an offer
- 4:15Speaker 1: I can't refuse. I'll find a way to work it in,
- 4:17Speaker 1: you know. So yes, like Dan, obviously your example was
- 4:20Speaker 1: was ludicrous, but it's it is true that that if
- 4:24Speaker 1: someone comes and makes that sort of call, he'll listen.
- 4:27Speaker 1: And part of this could be too Jeremy's will trying
- 4:30Speaker 1: to up that starting price, right, like we're very firm,
- 4:34Speaker 1: firmly coming out and saying you better come.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Correct, Yeah, that's right.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Right, don't bring anything lame. But Tyler, like, as a player,
- 4:40Speaker 1: when you hear GMS say stuff like this, do you
- 4:43Speaker 1: do you listen?
- 4:44Speaker 2: Does it?
- 4:44Speaker 1: Does it matter the way that that it seems to
- 4:46Speaker 1: matter the viron.
- 4:48Speaker 4: I think too. On the other side of that, it's
- 4:51Speaker 4: jay Z listening to his player because clearly he made
- 4:55Speaker 4: a statement last week.
- 4:58Speaker 2: I'm sure jay Z like I did not know his name,
- 5:01Speaker 2: but that's a great nickname for him.
- 5:04Speaker 4: Well yeah, like I mean jay Z, you know, so
- 5:06Speaker 4: it's just one of you know, he probably picked up
- 5:08Speaker 4: his phone and was like, oh so Byron said that today,
- 5:11Speaker 4: so he knew it was coming regardless. But to have
- 5:16Speaker 4: a guy that has your back, that's running the show,
- 5:18Speaker 4: like that's all a player ever wants you you want
- 5:21Speaker 4: to know that the people but up in that suite,
- 5:23Speaker 4: up top or up in the the offices and left
- 5:25Speaker 4: field are on your side. And and for the most part,
- 5:29Speaker 4: like that, that's all guys want, Like it's you want.
- 5:32Speaker 4: When you say something or need something, they're there for you.
- 5:35Speaker 4: You know, they've got obviously made many efforts to make
- 5:38Speaker 4: Byron happy. He signed an extension there because he wanted
- 5:41Speaker 4: to stay. Dan's mentioned several times, you know, the Polads
- 5:45Speaker 4: went out to see him and so on and so forth.
- 5:47Speaker 4: So it's it's one like he very obviously wants to
- 5:51Speaker 4: stay there. I will say, though jay Z didn't mention
- 5:53Speaker 4: any other players that weren't available, but it was just Byron.
- 5:58Speaker 3: So no, we'll see what happened. Uh no, no, wait one
- 6:02Speaker 3: second too. I'll get to that point in one second.
- 6:04Speaker 3: But Zach, a round of golf might come up for you.
- 6:08Speaker 3: I understand rond golf could potentially come up for you
- 6:12Speaker 3: if your wife is holding If your wife is holding
- 6:14Speaker 3: a no golf card, you weren't going. And Byron, Byron
- 6:18Speaker 3: Buckson in this analogy, is holding a no golf card.
- 6:22Speaker 3: Byron Buckson gets to say if he stays or not. Yeah,
- 6:24Speaker 3: but like it makes this all so moot. He is
- 6:28Speaker 3: not going anywhere. Where's our where's our our? Byron buckson
- 6:32Speaker 3: trade meter, it's at negative fifty. It's not at zero.
- 6:36Speaker 3: It's at negative fifty. Like they've been relationship building with him.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Tom Poulad came in and went, like the trip to
- 6:45Speaker 3: the Tyler Jess reference to Baxley.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Wait, that's that's the wrong one. There we go, There
- 6:51Speaker 2: we go, there we go.
- 6:52Speaker 3: It's okay. It should be below now. It should be
- 6:55Speaker 3: like Tyron he is he's not going anywhere, okay, And
- 7:03Speaker 3: and he can say he's not going anywhere and back
- 7:06Speaker 3: it up. It would take them convincing. If if the
- 7:09Speaker 3: Twins maybe said they were gonna dynamite target field, uh,
- 7:13Speaker 3: and we're gonna let you get out of here via trade,
- 7:17Speaker 3: maybe he'd leave them. But I don't think they planned
- 7:19Speaker 3: a dynamite target field. I don't think they planned to
- 7:21Speaker 3: have him in the building. When they do, he's not
- 7:23Speaker 3: going anywhere. It's just this was just.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Though, there you go. I don't right now.
- 7:34Speaker 3: When here's the thing. When I wrote my story last week,
- 7:39Speaker 3: I talked to someone in the front office at the
- 7:42Speaker 3: time and I said, Hey, just so you know, there's
- 7:45Speaker 3: gonna be a Byron story up later today. And by
- 7:48Speaker 3: the time he got back to me and the story
- 7:49Speaker 3: was up and the response was good, But we were
- 7:54Speaker 3: gonna say that, and I said, well you should then,
- 7:57Speaker 3: like you you should then say it, and they said it.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Teams Jerry Redenstorf, White Sox owner, used to get asked
- 8:06Speaker 3: about Joseah Bray you at his peak when the White
- 8:09Speaker 3: Sox were terrible, aren't you going to trade him and
- 8:11Speaker 3: cash in right now and just make your future of
- 8:14Speaker 3: a franchise better? And he said, look, the only player
- 8:17Speaker 3: that's I've ever said was untradable was Michael Jordan, and
- 8:22Speaker 3: we don't do that, like you just don't say players
- 8:25Speaker 3: are untradable, or I know they didn't say that specifically.
- 8:29Speaker 3: The goal here words aside. The goal here was to
- 8:32Speaker 3: come out and say we're not trading Byron Buxton. They're
- 8:35Speaker 3: just not they That was the whole purpose of this
- 8:38Speaker 3: event is to say not a chance. And you know,
- 8:43Speaker 3: it's one of those things people should take stock in
- 8:46Speaker 3: because again Byron holds all the cards anyways, and this
- 8:50Speaker 3: was something he wanted to hear, so it was a
- 8:53Speaker 3: good move do you do.
- 8:54Speaker 1: You think it's an indication at all, Dan, like Tyler
- 8:57Speaker 1: was suggesting of what else they might because it you know,
- 9:01Speaker 1: if you are fire sailing rebuilding, I mean, no one's
- 9:04Speaker 1: going to get you a better haul than him right now.
- 9:07Speaker 1: So if you're not trading him, is in any indication
- 9:09Speaker 1: at all that maybe Joe, Ryan Stays or others stay let.
- 9:12Speaker 3: Me, let me get my old man glasses out.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Here, okay, and take your time, don't hurt your back,
- 9:19Speaker 1: give me.
- 9:19Speaker 3: One second here, give me because as I should have
- 9:23Speaker 3: been a better reporter and written more. Here's what the
- 9:25Speaker 3: rest of the quote said from Jeremy's all. He said,
- 9:33Speaker 3: we're gonna go out and give Okay, wait, I think
- 9:36Speaker 3: we're right now in the thick of it and want
- 9:38Speaker 3: to let this next stretch play out and give the
- 9:40Speaker 3: group every chance we can to make that a reality.
- 9:43Speaker 3: We're really pleased with where it's at, so we're going
- 9:45Speaker 3: to just let that continue unfold, and we feel like
- 9:48Speaker 3: a handful of games out of the division right in
- 9:49Speaker 3: the thick of things. We're gonna keep pushing forward and
- 9:52Speaker 3: that remains our focus. I know there will be a
- 9:54Speaker 3: broader discussion when we get closer but I think the
- 9:57Speaker 3: reality is we're also not alone being in the thick things.
- 10:00Speaker 3: A lot of teams feel that way. Hang on, there's
- 10:02Speaker 3: one other part here, he said. Basically, he suggests they're
- 10:10Speaker 3: interested in pushing forward. This team does not. I mean
- 10:16Speaker 3: the what I got from this. He's here, man, this
- 10:21Speaker 3: is terrible TV.
- 10:25Speaker 2: This is terrible, though it's reality.
- 10:30Speaker 3: He looked the Twins are looking. I think the Twins,
- 10:36Speaker 3: if we were going to guess right now, are closer
- 10:38Speaker 3: to being on the ad side than they are to
- 10:41Speaker 3: being on the subtract side. They Tompolead really wants to
- 10:47Speaker 3: make it up to the players. Tompolead wants to make
- 10:51Speaker 3: it up to fans if they are in the same
- 10:55Speaker 3: position now. Granted it's harder to say this after they
- 10:57Speaker 3: got their asses kicked last night and and lose twelve
- 11:01Speaker 3: to three to the Dodgers. But if the Twins are
- 11:04Speaker 3: within three or four games in the wild card, I
- 11:06Speaker 3: think that they're going to look to enhance the roster
- 11:10Speaker 3: versus trade away. I just don't see them being within
- 11:14Speaker 3: a handful of games and stand out white flag we're done.
- 11:17Speaker 3: I just can't. I think maybe the front office would
- 11:19Speaker 3: like for them to be able to do that and
- 11:22Speaker 3: look at the chances and go, this is really thin.
- 11:24Speaker 3: It's it costs us a lot to add. But I
- 11:26Speaker 3: think the I think they're just looking to make things
- 11:31Speaker 3: exciting for fans again and see the possibility of making
- 11:34Speaker 3: trades as an avenue into that. So if they are close,
- 11:39Speaker 3: granted this means they can't fall apart for the next
- 11:41Speaker 3: forty days for that to change, yes, yeah, But if
- 11:46Speaker 3: they're close, I think they're going to be much more
- 11:49Speaker 3: in position where they want to add versus subtract. I
- 11:52Speaker 3: just that's the sense I'm getting. I know it sounds
- 11:55Speaker 3: crazy this team trade ten guys last year, but I
- 11:58Speaker 3: think they recognize the really screwed up three times over
- 12:02Speaker 3: the last three years and need to start going in
- 12:05Speaker 3: the other direction. They have a lot of depth in
- 12:08Speaker 3: their farm system. They are in a position where they
- 12:11Speaker 3: can trade guys, and so I think, you know, they're
- 12:15Speaker 3: closer to that than they are to selling off.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Well, we'll talk about those last two games against the Dodgers,
- 12:23Speaker 1: which weren't great but had some positives plenty of negatives,
- 12:28Speaker 1: and we'll preview quite the showdown tonight Joe Ryan versus
- 12:33Speaker 1: Shoheo Tani at target Field when we come back right
- 12:37Speaker 1: after this. If you like what you're hearing, please toss
- 12:40Speaker 1: us a like, a subscribe a comment. We'd love to
- 12:41Speaker 1: hear from you. If you're watching on YouTube, there is
- 12:45Speaker 1: a QR code on the screen right now for you
- 12:48Speaker 1: to follow along.

- 13:55Speaker 1: All right, we're back. Tyler is walking to the T box.
- 13:58Speaker 1: He's gonna he's gonna leave us. He's not going to
- 14:00Speaker 1: stay with us through the round. But Tyler did. Uh
- 14:05Speaker 1: so usually you picked Byron Buxton on Monday to Homer.
- 14:09Speaker 7: Yeah, I had an inkling, Yeah I had an inkling.
- 14:13Speaker 7: You know, it's one of those it's the big game.
- 14:15Speaker 7: You know, lights are bright, all the things like that.
- 14:18Speaker 7: We knew show Hey was going to do something. We
- 14:20Speaker 7: just weren't hoping it was going to be two pitches in.
- 14:23Speaker 7: But you know, Byron answered back with the Homer, and
- 14:25Speaker 7: that's what everyone who wants Byron sees, and that's what
- 14:29Speaker 7: Twins fans get to see so often, And you know,
- 14:32Speaker 7: it was just it's such the epitome of him, Like
- 14:35Speaker 7: the moment, he's just cool. Calm, collected always, and you know,
- 14:39Speaker 7: he got his chance and he pimped it and made
- 14:42Speaker 7: everybody know that he hit that homer, and you know,
- 14:44Speaker 7: it was it was just so cool to see and
- 14:47Speaker 7: unfortunately that was all we got, but you know, it
- 14:50Speaker 7: was it was just such a typical Byron moment. You know,
- 14:54Speaker 7: the lights were bright and going, and the stadium wanted
- 14:56Speaker 7: him to hit that homer. And I'm sure Dan could
- 14:59Speaker 7: talk on that. He was there for it. I mean,
- 15:01Speaker 7: it's just he's he's just special man. And to be
- 15:04Speaker 7: able to pick him and know what's coming to us,
- 15:06Speaker 7: that was pretty sweet.
- 15:08Speaker 3: Special enough that you would go out of your way
- 15:10Speaker 3: to say we're not going to trade him. That's uh,
- 15:13Speaker 3: you know, he he's It was a great moment. I mean,
- 15:18Speaker 3: everybody came to see show hey and Byron. Everybody came
- 15:21Speaker 3: to see show hey. Let's be honest, like he's a
- 15:23Speaker 3: spectacle and show hey. On the second pitch of the
- 15:26Speaker 3: game takes Debbie Matthews deep. It was amazing. Just the
- 15:30Speaker 3: feeling of awe in the stadium when he did that
- 15:32Speaker 3: was like, oh man, are you kidding me? We came
- 15:36Speaker 3: to see it and it happened, and then Byron answering
- 15:38Speaker 3: him was just one of those moments where you just
- 15:40Speaker 3: remember where you were and uh, overall, it was a
- 15:43Speaker 3: well played game on on Monday. We can get into
- 15:47Speaker 3: Zebbie here in a second, when when Duff is teeing off,
- 15:51Speaker 3: are you are you playing with press? Did I?
- 15:53Speaker 2: Did you say you're playing? Yeah?
- 15:54Speaker 7: He's uh where he's over there somewhere he's back over
- 15:59Speaker 7: there is I'm not used to seeing him in shorts
- 16:05Speaker 7: and without a cowboy hat on, so it's hard to
- 16:07Speaker 7: spot him sometimes.
- 16:09Speaker 3: That's awesome. Well, enjoy the round, man.
- 16:13Speaker 7: I will, and y'all enjoy, and let's hopefully you can
- 16:16Speaker 7: get one tonight.
- 16:19Speaker 2: We'll hope.
- 16:19Speaker 1: So Tyler, please update us on honey birdies you got
- 16:22Speaker 1: when we talked on Friday.
- 16:24Speaker 7: I'll go ahead and get ahead of that one zero.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Right sounds good. Well, don't play from the tips, that's
- 16:29Speaker 1: the problem.
- 16:29Speaker 3: But no, like that. It was such a good game,
- 16:34Speaker 3: zach like. It was just so crisply played on both sides,
- 16:38Speaker 3: and like one and then you get it's funny. Freddy
- 16:41Speaker 3: Freeman is apparently chocolver. Freddy Freeman was the other guy
- 16:45Speaker 3: that homeward in the game Multi multi Time m VP.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Freddy Freeman. But he's the the after note because show
- 16:53Speaker 3: Hey and and Buxton went deep and that's that is
- 16:56Speaker 3: hilarious because Freddy it was like a you know, home
- 17:01Speaker 3: run in the game defining home run and I was
- 17:05Speaker 3: sorry one time m VP, not multi time on VP,
- 17:08Speaker 3: but probably probably a Hall of Famer or close very
- 17:12Speaker 3: close to Hall of Fame player and Freddie Freeman and
- 17:16Speaker 3: that was that was a crazy game.
- 17:18Speaker 2: It was a good game, Yeah, it was.
- 17:20Speaker 3: It was.
- 17:20Speaker 2: It was right, it was it was a clean game.
- 17:22Speaker 1: We haven't seen a lot of two one games from
- 17:24Speaker 1: this Twins team, for either because of their offense or
- 17:27Speaker 1: their pitching in defense. But uh, Eric Louer, who the
- 17:31Speaker 1: Twins had faced when he was a Blue Jay, was
- 17:35Speaker 1: released by the Blue Jays, comes to the Dodgers, has
- 17:37Speaker 1: turned his season entirely around six hit listenings. Didn't start
- 17:41Speaker 1: though he was listed as the starter. On Monday, we
- 17:44Speaker 1: talked about starting and they went with the opener.
- 17:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:46Speaker 3: Yeah, Dave Roberts said, the Twins have some big, burly,
- 17:50Speaker 3: right handed dudes, so we're gonna start a right hander instead.
- 17:54Speaker 3: For he's like four of the first five guys are
- 17:56Speaker 3: big burly right handed dudes.
- 17:58Speaker 1: And I don't know more, maybe being the wrong decision
- 18:01Speaker 1: because the opener gave up the homer to Buckston and
- 18:03Speaker 1: two hits and Lower was untouchable for six innings. But yeah,
- 18:08Speaker 1: just the Twins came off a road trip, they scored
- 18:11Speaker 1: fifty runs in six games and then just couldn't couldn't
- 18:13Speaker 1: find the bats in either game.
- 18:16Speaker 3: No, you're right, No, in that before we abandoned the
- 18:21Speaker 3: Monday game to talk about the dreadful Tuesday again, I
- 18:26Speaker 3: liked the Zebie Matthews, what what I saw there? And
- 18:29Speaker 3: I gave up the go a head at home run
- 18:31Speaker 3: to Freddy Freeman, and that was a cutter that didn't cut.
- 18:34Speaker 3: He was asked about it afterwards because it was identified
- 18:36Speaker 3: on Baseball MLB dot Com at first identified that as
- 18:40Speaker 3: a fastball, and it was ninety one, and I remember
- 18:42Speaker 3: seeing ninety one fastball. One thing, Oh, is he is
- 18:45Speaker 3: he in trouble? Like he's been throwing ninety five, ninety
- 18:48Speaker 3: six all game ninety one? Like is he down? And
- 18:50Speaker 3: then we recognized it was a cutter, but it was
- 18:53Speaker 3: just middle middle and in that inning, the Dodgers kept
- 18:58Speaker 3: kind of going and Zebbie Matthews was nearing his career
- 19:01Speaker 3: high pitch count and they got two guys on and
- 19:04Speaker 3: Alex Call was coming up to the plate and Alex
- 19:06Speaker 3: Call was two for two earlier in the game against
- 19:09Speaker 3: Zebbie Matthews. So you think the bullpen's going, this is
- 19:12Speaker 3: the part right here, they're gonna pull him. Instead of
- 19:15Speaker 3: Derek Shelton coming out of the dugout. Was Pete McKie,
- 19:17Speaker 3: the pitching coach that came out of the dugout and
- 19:20Speaker 3: basically said go get him, and Zebie Matthews responded by
- 19:24Speaker 3: getting called to fly out and then striking out. I
- 19:27Speaker 3: think it was Chuckie Robinson the catcher after that to
- 19:31Speaker 3: get out of the jam and get through six and
- 19:33Speaker 3: I thought that was a big step for Zebbie Matthews
- 19:36Speaker 3: for the team trusted him and he responded and he
- 19:40Speaker 3: ended up at one eight pitches but six innings, two
- 19:43Speaker 3: runs against that Dodger lineup. We saw what they can
- 19:46Speaker 3: do on Tuesday, and that was a good moment where
- 19:49Speaker 3: he ended up with his six quality starting out of
- 19:52Speaker 3: eight outings. You know, Zeby is reflected confidence even after
- 19:58Speaker 3: that bad outing in Detroit two ago, that he was
- 20:01Speaker 3: on the right track and he continues to show results
- 20:04Speaker 3: that he is and you know Byron nearly homeward again
- 20:07Speaker 3: in the game later in the I think in the
- 20:09Speaker 3: seventh inning, hit one to the wall and it was
- 20:11Speaker 3: like one of those it looked like a two iron.
- 20:15Speaker 3: To keep up with the golf metaphors here, it looked
- 20:18Speaker 3: like a two iron, like like a line drive that
- 20:21Speaker 3: looked like it was gonna get there and it just didn't.
- 20:23Speaker 3: But it was a well played game all around, and
- 20:27Speaker 3: unfortunately Twins came out losing, but you could tell they
- 20:30Speaker 3: were They weren't down after the game, do you know
- 20:33Speaker 3: what I mean? That was? It was one of those
- 20:35Speaker 3: It was a great game. We lost. Somebody's gonna lose.
- 20:39Speaker 3: That was the feeling. That was not the feeling after
- 20:41Speaker 3: the twelve to three game on Tuesday night. That was
- 20:44Speaker 3: a different feeling.
- 20:45Speaker 1: And those games happened, and it was probably right for
- 20:50Speaker 1: it from the start with the fire drill for the
- 20:54Speaker 1: starting pitching situation with Joe Ryan getting sick and having
- 20:57Speaker 1: his startup back of day, Twins went with Ken Rojas
- 21:00Speaker 1: and called up, why am I forgetting Austin voth.
- 21:04Speaker 3: Austin vote both vote both?
- 21:07Speaker 1: Yeah, both Austin both So it was always going to
- 21:11Speaker 1: be a scramble. They were facing rib Leski, who's had
- 21:13Speaker 1: a great year and pitch and pitched great.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Yeah, But what was.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Probably more disappointing than losing a game badly to a
- 21:20Speaker 1: team that beats everybody badly pretty much, was just it
- 21:22Speaker 1: was sloppy. You think you tweeted it last night, Dan
- 21:25Speaker 1: or posted it just Lukeisha had a rough game in
- 21:27Speaker 1: the field, there was a runner thrown out the plate.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Just maybe none of that stuff really mattered at the
- 21:31Speaker 1: end of the day, but it just kind of all
- 21:33Speaker 1: those bad habits that didn't seem to be there Monday.
- 21:35Speaker 1: We're back on Tuesday.
- 21:38Speaker 3: The Tommy Edmund base hit in the first inning where yes,
- 21:42Speaker 3: Kendrew Yeah, you know, Kendry Rojas is making his first
- 21:45Speaker 3: outing or second appearance since the elbow injury, and the
- 21:48Speaker 3: first one was at Triple A and it wasn't pretty.
- 21:52Speaker 3: You know, I think he gave up five runs at
- 21:53Speaker 3: Triple A last week, and I was like, they're they're
- 21:56Speaker 3: forcing them in action because they're just in a spot
- 21:59Speaker 3: where they need pitching. And he walks the first two
- 22:03Speaker 3: batters and it's like, oh, where's this going and strikeouts
- 22:06Speaker 3: strike out and he's about to get out of it
- 22:08Speaker 3: and Tommy Edmond hit a rope up the middle, but
- 22:11Speaker 3: it was right. You know, maybe it knuckled a little
- 22:14Speaker 3: bit on Luke Keishel, but it's one of those plays
- 22:16Speaker 3: you got to knock the ball down. You got to
- 22:18Speaker 3: do something. It can eat you up and go for
- 22:21Speaker 3: a hit, but you gotta knock it down.
- 22:22Speaker 1: That was the one where he got caught in between
- 22:24Speaker 1: like trying to catch it or short hop it.
- 22:26Speaker 3: Basically yes, yeah, and so instead of being nothing nothing
- 22:30Speaker 3: in and over, it's one nothing at that point and
- 22:33Speaker 3: rohas got another strikeout to get out of the inning.
- 22:36Speaker 3: And you know, Rojas showed plenty because he got in
- 22:40Speaker 3: a little trouble in the second end but got out
- 22:41Speaker 3: of it. Rojas looked good, like they they're you know,
- 22:45Speaker 3: they should not be concerned about how he is feeling.
- 22:48Speaker 3: He said after the game that he was looking for
- 22:52Speaker 3: specific things with how he was feeling. He felt good,
- 22:56Speaker 3: He felt like normal, So that's good signs. All the
- 22:59Speaker 3: goods there though. The third inning, I think there was
- 23:03Speaker 3: the third inning, Luke Keishall made another play where it
- 23:05Speaker 3: was coming over towards first on the ground ball and
- 23:09Speaker 3: his flip. Austin Voth, Yeah, Austin both was racing over
- 23:14Speaker 3: to cover the bass. Royce Lewis was there sort of
- 23:17Speaker 3: looking for the bag with his feet and Keisho's flip
- 23:20Speaker 3: went right through the middle of the two of them
- 23:23Speaker 3: and what should have been out and I think that
- 23:25Speaker 3: would have been the final out of the inning, or
- 23:29Speaker 3: you know, in a twelve to three game. I'm not
- 23:31Speaker 3: gonna lie you just you forget the order of things
- 23:33Speaker 3: because it was so ugly, but I mean, it just
- 23:37Speaker 3: felt over early on. The Twins come back and tie it.
- 23:40Speaker 3: Vic Kartini hits a home run, makes it a two
- 23:42Speaker 3: to two game. That was a nice moment, but that
- 23:45Speaker 3: was right after then, you know, the Twins had, like
- 23:49Speaker 3: you said, a runner thrown out at home, which that
- 23:53Speaker 3: was on a Byron double, and then Byron did come
- 23:56Speaker 3: around to score on the Josh Bell to out single,
- 23:59Speaker 3: another RB to out RBI from Josh Bell. There were
- 24:02Speaker 3: some good signs early on and then it just all
- 24:06Speaker 3: blew up spectacularly. Like I stopped paying attention about seven
- 24:11Speaker 3: to two, and then you know, Taylor Rodgers came in
- 24:14Speaker 3: in the ninth because they were just trying to get
- 24:17Speaker 3: through the innings like they made both both wore it.
- 24:21Speaker 3: He just kept standing out there and you know, you
- 24:24Speaker 3: knew the shape of the bullpen last night and where
- 24:27Speaker 3: they were. They wanted to get through this game. They
- 24:30Speaker 3: have a day off on Thursday, and when Joe Ryan
- 24:33Speaker 3: is sick and shifts your plans, you're like scrambling. You're
- 24:37Speaker 3: all hands on deck at that point. And so they
- 24:41Speaker 3: proved it, and both staying out there was like, oh,
- 24:43Speaker 3: this game really is over. And then Taylor Rodgers gave
- 24:46Speaker 3: up five in the ninth and they made him kind
- 24:48Speaker 3: of wear it because they didn't want to bring it
- 24:50Speaker 3: into their arm. And that inning just kept going and
- 24:52Speaker 3: it was like you're throwing the rain and what a
- 24:55Speaker 3: what a weird day?
- 24:56Speaker 2: Your favorite yesterday? Yeah?
- 24:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean good weather in the morning, and then
- 25:01Speaker 3: like two thirty, it felt like it rained for four
- 25:04Speaker 3: solid hours. And I was shocked. We only were twenty
- 25:08Speaker 3: minutes late with first pitch, but just had a weird
- 25:10Speaker 3: feeling all around, and then you know you've lose twelve
- 25:13Speaker 3: to three. It was just an ugly, ugly, ugly game.
- 25:16Speaker 1: The Dodgers tied their season high with seventeen hits. The
- 25:20Speaker 1: only player in their lineup who didn't have one Showy
- 25:25Speaker 1: Yeah first inning sack fly for an RBI, but no
- 25:29Speaker 1: hits for show Hey in that explosion. Twins are now
- 25:33Speaker 1: thirty eight and forty three. That is four and a
- 25:36Speaker 1: half games out in the Central still just two out
- 25:39Speaker 1: in the Wildcard. There there are five teams in the
- 25:42Speaker 1: Al sitting on thirty eight wins, A's, Rangers Orioles, Twins
- 25:47Speaker 1: and Astros, two of them with forty one losses, three
- 25:50Speaker 1: of them with identical thirty eight and forty three records.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Twins will end the series with the Dodgers tonight. Big
- 25:58Speaker 1: pitching matchup should be a lot of fun. We'll preview
- 25:59Speaker 1: that when we come back.

- 27:05Speaker 1: Wednesday Night should be fun at Target Feel Joe Ryan
- 27:08Speaker 1: against Show Hey Otani, which wasn't supposed to be the
- 27:12Speaker 1: case when the series began. Joe Ryan, as we mentioned earlier,
- 27:15Speaker 1: was sick and unable to make it start Tuesday. This
- 27:17Speaker 1: was supposed to be the bullpen game for the Twins,
- 27:20Speaker 1: but it.
- 27:20Speaker 2: Got moved up.
- 27:21Speaker 1: So it makes this game very interesting. And this was
- 27:25Speaker 1: the one game I was sure they were gonna lose
- 27:26Speaker 1: when the series started, and now I have this sneaking
- 27:29Speaker 1: suspicion that they might be the one they steal in
- 27:31Speaker 1: the series. But Dan big one tonight. Looking forward, to it.
- 27:36Speaker 3: Yeah, and Joe Ryan did say he felt ill back
- 27:39Speaker 3: in Texas over the weekend and it kind of got
- 27:43Speaker 3: worse and worse. And it's funny, I'm feeling something coming
- 27:46Speaker 3: on right now myself. It's a great feeling knowing, yeah,
- 27:49Speaker 3: it might be ahead. But like yesterday said, there's been
- 27:52Speaker 3: a couple of times where his head has felt like
- 27:54Speaker 3: glass the last couple of days, and he was better yesterday,
- 27:58Speaker 3: but still like and had turned the corner enough to
- 28:00Speaker 3: where they announced him for Wednesday. It is interesting, actually,
- 28:04Speaker 3: Connor Prelip was scheduled to start on Wednesday night, originally
- 28:09Speaker 3: not a bullpen game, but they're gonna push him. I
- 28:13Speaker 3: asked if they're gonna push Connor Prelipt a Friday, and
- 28:16Speaker 3: the response was that's TVA or tv D to be determined.
- 28:23Speaker 3: I think they're gonna push Connor Prelip maybe back, you know.
- 28:26Speaker 3: I think TODs Bradley is next in line, and then
- 28:29Speaker 3: Mike Bray is in a bullpen game. It wouldn't shock
- 28:32Speaker 3: me if the Twins use this right here to push
- 28:36Speaker 3: Connor Prelip to Sunday and give him a couple of days.
- 28:39Speaker 3: But all that said, this just makes for a really
- 28:43Speaker 3: exciting matchup between Joe Ryan, who will love to face
- 28:47Speaker 3: this Dodgers lineup and the challenge that presents. He doesn't
- 28:50Speaker 3: care who's on the mound against him. Everybody else will
- 28:53Speaker 3: care that it's show Hao Tony out there, you know,
- 28:56Speaker 3: having an MVP season looking like you could be a
- 28:59Speaker 3: cy young candidate, it should make for a particularly fun matchup.
- 29:05Speaker 3: And I agree with you, like it's one of those
- 29:06Speaker 3: games where the Twins go in. When Joe Ryan pitches,
- 29:09Speaker 3: the Dodgers will probably be favored, as my guess, because
- 29:12Speaker 3: it's Showhy, but this is not gonna be a heavy
- 29:15Speaker 3: favorite kind of situation. Joe Ryan has been so good lately,
- 29:20Speaker 3: and he did say he felt ill in his last out,
- 29:23Speaker 3: and so you know, hopefully for the Twins' sake, he
- 29:26Speaker 3: is continuing to feel good. They get lots of good
- 29:30Speaker 3: drugs when they're feeling sick, they get they get some
- 29:34Speaker 3: stuff that's behind the counter from the trainers that helps
- 29:37Speaker 3: knock out you know. You know, when you have to
- 29:39Speaker 3: get the prescription for the advil after your like light procedure,
- 29:43Speaker 3: they give you the heavy duty stuff. If you have
- 29:45Speaker 3: to ask. You have to get it from behind the counter.
- 29:48Speaker 3: The Twins have that behind the counter stuff, so their
- 29:50Speaker 3: their illnesses sometimes seem to be shorter than ours because
- 29:53Speaker 3: they get some heavy duty cold medicine that we don't
- 29:57Speaker 3: have access to. And I suspect Joe Ryan will be fine,
- 30:00Speaker 3: especially in time. In the first pitch rolls around.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Otani is seven to two on the year, one point
- 30:07Speaker 1: four to seven e RA seventy eight strikeouts against twenty
- 30:10Speaker 1: two walks, Joe Ryan five and three two nine nine
- 30:14Speaker 1: ninety nine strikeouts against eighteen walks looking for strikeout number
- 30:18Speaker 1: one hundred DAN. When this series started, obviously we expected
- 30:24Speaker 1: the likely scenario that the Twins would lose it, even
- 30:27Speaker 1: potentially get swept.
- 30:28Speaker 2: We'll see what happens tonight.
- 30:30Speaker 1: I'm not sure how much it would affect things, just
- 30:36Speaker 1: seeing the gap between them the Dodgers. In terms of
- 30:38Speaker 1: the front office, it sounds like the front offices has
- 30:41Speaker 1: has has had their say as we talked about the
- 30:43Speaker 1: beginning of the show, But certainly to come away from
- 30:47Speaker 1: tonight with at least another competitive game would be a
- 30:51Speaker 1: nice boost when they're looking at an American league that
- 30:53Speaker 1: continues to be full of mediocrity across the board.
- 30:58Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, everybody talks about like the Bellweather matchups
- 31:02Speaker 3: and like, is this something? Is this a measuring stick
- 31:05Speaker 3: for you? And it's like, okay, sure, you want to
- 31:08Speaker 3: see how you do against the best, but this is
- 31:10Speaker 3: a team that has three times the payroll, It has
- 31:14Speaker 3: superstars at every position and even very good players as
- 31:18Speaker 3: backups across the board. It's not they're an outlier compared
- 31:24Speaker 3: to what the Twins are facing and scaring off against.
- 31:27Speaker 3: In the American League. There are some talented teams that
- 31:29Speaker 3: are struggling, There's no question, but a lot of those
- 31:32Speaker 3: talented teams are beat up and that's why they're in
- 31:34Speaker 3: the same spot as the Twins, whether it's pitching issues.
- 31:38Speaker 3: You know, everywhere you look, there's flawed teams in the
- 31:40Speaker 3: American League. So while this is a measuring stick for
- 31:43Speaker 3: what maybe October, you like, if you got to October
- 31:47Speaker 3: to get faced the Dodgers again and you got your
- 31:50Speaker 3: buds kicked in the World Series, there's a lot of
- 31:52Speaker 3: good that came with that ahead of that, and you
- 31:54Speaker 3: can live with it.
- 31:55Speaker 1: I think we're talking World Series now, who all right?
- 31:59Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying. Man Like, it's like if
- 32:03Speaker 3: that was if you played them again. So much crazy
- 32:07Speaker 3: good stuff would have had to have happened to get
- 32:09Speaker 3: there in the first place. That it's like, you could
- 32:12Speaker 3: probably accept losing to the Dodgers in October. They're they're
- 32:16Speaker 3: just a machine and they I don't know if they'll
- 32:20Speaker 3: they'll threepeat, but man, they look pretty primed to make themselves.
- 32:25Speaker 3: They have as good of a shot at repeating as
- 32:28Speaker 3: any team. I don't even know who the last three
- 32:30Speaker 3: p was, but I'm just the Dodgers are Nike true
- 32:34Speaker 3: measure Okay, it's not a true measuring stick, Like if
- 32:38Speaker 3: the Twins get swept, Yeah, okay, they got swept. You
- 32:42Speaker 3: just want to play well and show that you can
- 32:44Speaker 3: play well. But I think if they played their best
- 32:48Speaker 3: game on Wednesday, they can win this and come away
- 32:50Speaker 3: with all, right, two or three games. We showed up
- 32:53Speaker 3: against Dodgers, and we'll just forget about that Thursday, go
- 32:56Speaker 3: into our off day and get ready for the Rockies coming.
- 32:58Speaker 1: In nineteen sixty five World Series rematch. That would be
- 33:04Speaker 1: that would be something. Think of all the people that
- 33:06Speaker 1: would that were that they'd trot out, the fans.
- 33:09Speaker 2: Who were alive for the last one, and the memories they'd.
- 33:11Speaker 3: Yeah, it's the fans most that sixty five team is
- 33:14Speaker 3: not around. It's crazy, Yeah, how few of those guys
- 33:18Speaker 3: are still with us on this from the sixty five
- 33:20Speaker 3: group because I always try to do you know you
- 33:24Speaker 3: you were my editor eight years ago, and I love
- 33:27Speaker 3: looking at the historical stuff about the Twins and they
- 33:30Speaker 3: have such great history, and I was like, you can't
- 33:32Speaker 3: do some of the stuff pre like mid nineteen seventies
- 33:35Speaker 3: because a lot of their guys just from that group
- 33:39Speaker 3: all are gone anyways, So they will trot out fans
- 33:42Speaker 3: because they can't trot out a lot of those somebody crazy.
- 33:46Speaker 1: Just want to make it clear that we're not predicting
- 33:48Speaker 1: this will happen, just you know, fantasy scenarios.
- 33:50Speaker 2: Yeah, that would be That would be lovely.
- 33:52Speaker 1: But Twins will finish up tonight against the Dodgers. They're
- 33:55Speaker 1: off Thursday, and then their reward after playing the league's
- 33:58Speaker 1: best team for three games is hosting the league's worst
- 34:01Speaker 1: team for three games. The Colorado Rockies, with the worst
- 34:04Speaker 1: record in baseball as of now, come to Target Field
- 34:07Speaker 1: for the weekend. We'll be back with you Friday. We'll
- 34:10Speaker 1: talk about whatever happens tonight. In Joe Ryan versus show. Hey, Otani,
