- 0:23Speaker 1: And I'm feeling that spirit of the season tonight as
- 0:25Speaker 1: I'm watching all over the city all the Christmas lights,
- 0:28Speaker 1: all the Christmas trees, and and all the fun stuff
- 0:32Speaker 1: New York City has to offer. But I have to say,
- 0:36Speaker 1: you're on the Woman Up Network. Maybe you guys like
- 0:39Speaker 1: when I talk news, talk sports or have adaptive stories.
- 0:43Speaker 1: But I've noticed as well, you don't mind when I
- 0:46Speaker 1: do introspection. So let me do some introspection with you
- 0:50Speaker 1: here on the one Leg Up Network. Because I was
- 0:57Speaker 1: rolling past the New York Stock Exchange Crest Smith Street
- 1:00Speaker 1: yesterday like I always do in the morning, and it
- 1:06Speaker 1: hit me, and I'm gonna get morbid for a minute.
- 1:11Speaker 1: It hit me that as I run on one Loo
- 1:13Speaker 1: up alex dot Com tonight, that I won't be here
- 1:20Speaker 1: to experience Christmas in New York City. You know, one
- 1:24Speaker 1: day I won't be here to experience One day, I
- 1:32Speaker 1: I just won't be here. And you're saying, boy, that's
- 1:36Speaker 1: a morbid thought, and I was thinking about it too,
- 1:39Speaker 1: But I know it's heightened by the fact that this
- 1:40Speaker 1: is now my third Christmas without my dad, and as
- 1:43Speaker 1: you know, he loved Christmas. He loved taking me all
- 1:47Speaker 1: over the place, and he would always carry me on
- 1:49Speaker 1: his shoulder as if I was tiny tim back in
- 1:53Speaker 1: the day. I mean it was a Christmas time was
- 1:56Speaker 1: special for Pops. I could always tell that. But I
- 2:01Speaker 1: know yesterday's feeling of impermanence of this won't be around
- 2:06Speaker 1: forever and I won't be around forever hit me deep,
- 2:13Speaker 1: and it inspire me to write a whole blog about
- 2:15Speaker 1: it on One Leg Up alex dot com because and
- 2:20Speaker 1: in this article, I I wrote about things I've thought
- 2:22Speaker 1: about but never really voiced in the public square. For instance,
- 2:29Speaker 1: I think it's safe to say we are on this
- 2:32Speaker 1: earth for the time allotted by God. See at birth.
- 2:38Speaker 1: I always, I always feel like we are born with
- 2:44Speaker 1: an expiration date and that God's designated that for us.
- 2:49Speaker 1: So we don't know it, but we do know it's there.
- 2:53Speaker 1: That's why we think about the fact that God gets
- 2:57Speaker 1: us up every morning to get it right in this
- 3:01Speaker 1: life and move things forward in this life. We can
- 3:04Speaker 1: have one leg up on life if we know that
- 3:09Speaker 1: God has us here for a reason, but can also
- 3:13Speaker 1: take it away from us at any minute and bring
- 3:16Speaker 1: us back home to Him. Then let's make the best
- 3:21Speaker 1: He's given his row on this earth, while unearthly being,
- 3:28Speaker 1: the impermanence of life should inspire us to inspire to
- 3:34Speaker 1: experience anything and everything we want to right now, right now.
- 3:41Speaker 1: I'm not gonna say I'm going tomorrow, or next year
- 3:45Speaker 1: or anytime soon. But what I am telling you is
- 3:49Speaker 1: that by looking at this Christmas tree and realizing I
- 3:53Speaker 1: may not get to see it forever, I won't get
- 3:54Speaker 1: to see it forever, it hit me, hey, keep myself
- 3:59Speaker 1: healthy so that these crutches I wear have an owner,
- 4:03Speaker 1: you know. In a Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens writes that
- 4:08Speaker 1: the ghost of Christmas Present does not see a crutch
- 4:12Speaker 1: with an owner. He writes, he tells Scrooge, I see
- 4:15Speaker 1: a crutch without an owner, a vacant seat, when discussing
- 4:19Speaker 1: the future of tiny Tim who does not die, by
- 4:22Speaker 1: the way, who does not die. But I think of
- 4:28Speaker 1: those words, especially around Christmas time, that I'm so grateful
- 4:32Speaker 1: to have my crutches and that my crutches have an owner.
- 4:39Speaker 1: And I go on to write, I don't know why
- 4:43Speaker 1: it was put into perspective the fragilities of life by
- 4:46Speaker 1: looking at the New York Sock Exchange Christmas tree, But
- 4:49Speaker 1: as I write this as I podcast to you. I'm
- 4:52Speaker 1: thankful it did, because now I'm inspired the next fourteen
- 4:55Speaker 1: days of before Christmas to put all the Christmas lights
- 5:02Speaker 1: stuff on my Instagram because I'm not only impressed by
- 5:05Speaker 1: all the different establishments that have really decked out this
- 5:08Speaker 1: Christmas season. Maybe I'm exploring it more than normal, but
- 5:10Speaker 1: I'm really noticing a lot of establishments decked out, restaurants,
- 5:15Speaker 1: corporate buildings, the Christmas trees, of course. And at the
- 5:19Speaker 1: same time as I'm impressed, I'm even even more blessed
- 5:24Speaker 1: to experience the Christmas lights around New York City because
- 5:27Speaker 1: I've been given that chance by God to do so.
- 5:30Speaker 1: To do so, I go on to write, I am
- 5:35Speaker 1: on a drive to thirty five years on this earth,
- 5:38Speaker 1: and in everything I get to experience, I'll remember that
- 5:41Speaker 1: thought of impermanence, looking at the New York Stock Exchange
- 5:44Speaker 1: Christmas tree and feeling extremely blessed for every opportunity that
- 5:48Speaker 1: comes my way. There are times to be very front
- 5:51Speaker 1: and upfront with you. I'm frustrated, how did I miss
- 5:54Speaker 1: this event? How did I miss that event? Because remember,
- 5:56Speaker 1: my dad was always in tune with every event that
- 5:58Speaker 1: felt like so it was my mom and my stepdad.
- 6:01Speaker 1: But here I am sort of missing events, maybe because
- 6:03Speaker 1: of work, maybe because of this, that and the other,
- 6:06Speaker 1: and it's like I not hear about it. But what
- 6:09Speaker 1: I've also come to realize is God puts in front
- 6:12Speaker 1: of you opportunities that you're meant for. I mean, yeah,
- 6:18Speaker 1: I pushed to get that access to see Bob Costas
- 6:21Speaker 1: and be it the Yogi's Big Catch at montclais At
- 6:27Speaker 1: University at Yogi Bear Stadium. But that was an opportunity
- 6:31Speaker 1: God gave me. I feel like to experience that moment
- 6:35Speaker 1: of that Guinness Book of Rural Record, and of course
- 6:38Speaker 1: talking to Bob Costs is one of my heroes really
- 6:41Speaker 1: growing up. And I know Christmas time is not the
- 6:46Speaker 1: best time to talk about not being here forever, because
- 6:50Speaker 1: you want to have a lighter mood, a more festive mood,
- 6:53Speaker 1: a more joyous mood. But if you also think about
- 7:00Speaker 1: that feeling of yeah, we're not here forever, so let's
- 7:03Speaker 1: be happy, let's be excited, let's enjoy the Christmas season
- 7:07Speaker 1: right now, and at the same time break out of
- 7:10Speaker 1: our shelves and let ourselves shine to the world, and yes,
- 7:16Speaker 1: for me, be thankful an owner of these crutches, that
- 7:19Speaker 1: these crutches have an owner. I get a little preachy
- 7:23Speaker 1: here when I say we can also recognize this Christmas
- 7:26Speaker 1: season it could be our time to live out the
- 7:29Speaker 1: purpose He has on He has us on earth for.
- 7:35Speaker 1: I don't know. I feel like my own mantra is
- 7:37Speaker 1: having helping people have one leg up on life. But
- 7:40Speaker 1: maybe that is the purpose I'm supposed to be here
- 7:43Speaker 1: for us. I'm still trying to figure that out myself.
- 7:47Speaker 1: A end was saying, tis the season to live life
- 7:49Speaker 1: to the fullest. And I'm personally thankful to my incredible
- 7:53Speaker 1: family and all those around me who are encouraging me
- 7:57Speaker 1: to keep growing in this life. It is true I
- 8:00Speaker 1: looked at that Christmas tree as I said, I will
- 8:02Speaker 1: not be able to see this. There will be time
- 8:05Speaker 1: I won't see it anymore on this earth. So let
- 8:10Speaker 1: me enjoy every moment I can while I'm here. And
- 8:14Speaker 1: of course I want to personally thank Charles Dickens for
- 8:17Speaker 1: that line crutch without an owner, because I feel the
- 8:20Speaker 1: urge to make sure my crutches have an owner each
- 8:24Speaker 1: and every Christmas, each and every day. I mean, I
- 8:32Speaker 1: know I'm sort of reading about reading exactly what I wrote,
- 8:35Speaker 1: but it did send a chill. Like when I lost
- 8:40Speaker 1: my friend Max at age thirty one, It sends a
- 8:43Speaker 1: bit of a chill and its ends up feeling immortality
- 8:47Speaker 1: down my spine when I realize, holy shit, one day
- 8:55Speaker 1: I won't be able to experience those Christmas trees Rockefeller,
- 9:00Speaker 1: New York Stock Exchange. Brian Parkland consenter That day's not
- 9:04Speaker 1: coming anytime soon, believe me, and I'm fired up to
- 9:08Speaker 1: make sure that doesn't come anytime soon. But it's a
- 9:15Speaker 1: moment of introspection and realization that you are here now.
- 9:24Speaker 1: So enjoy being here, Enjoy living it out, Enjoy living
- 9:28Speaker 1: life to your fullest, because yes you may not. You know,
- 9:32Speaker 1: we're all not going to see all this one day.
- 9:37Speaker 1: But while we can see it, enjoy it, embrace it,
- 9:41Speaker 1: love on it, love it, Love the Christmas season, Love
- 9:46Speaker 1: every day you get to live on this earth, even
- 9:48Speaker 1: if it's not the Christmas season, because we only have
- 9:52Speaker 1: this one life and we must treasure that life. And
- 9:59Speaker 1: like my dad treasure is for eighty five years, we
- 10:05Speaker 1: too must truly treasure this moment we're in. Grab life
- 10:16Speaker 1: by the horns. I know it sounds cliche, but it's true.
- 10:22Speaker 1: And then, of course, think of all those people that
- 10:31Speaker 1: raised you, that got you to this moment, that helped
- 10:35Speaker 1: you get to where you are right now, and not
- 10:38Speaker 1: only think of them, but live at life as they
- 10:41Speaker 1: would want you to, Enjoy life as they want you to,
- 10:46Speaker 1: if it's your parents' case, live life as they set
- 10:49Speaker 1: you up for success to, because yeah, we all may
- 10:56Speaker 1: not be here one day, and we won't be here
- 10:58Speaker 1: one day, but while we're here, let's enjoy each other.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Let's love each other. Let's be good neighbors to each other,
- 11:05Speaker 1: Let's be good people to each other. Let's have good
- 11:11Speaker 1: will toward each other, and be grateful that we have
- 11:16Speaker 1: now and that we live out our life as we're
- 11:21Speaker 1: supposed to do now, so that by the time we
- 11:25Speaker 1: reach Saint Peter's Pearly Gates, well, I said, we lived
- 11:30Speaker 1: a great life, an amazing life, a fulfilling life, a
- 11:35Speaker 1: life where we put down the phones and enjoy each
- 11:38Speaker 1: other's company and presence and love. That's how we have
- 11:47Speaker 1: one leg up on life. To just be in the
- 11:50Speaker 1: moment in life. I overthink. I do think about the
- 11:56Speaker 1: future a lot, just like I did yesterday, Like, oh
- 11:59Speaker 1: my god, I will you know, one day we'll be
- 12:00Speaker 1: able to experience this. But then I'm brought down to
- 12:02Speaker 1: the earth and I think, but I'm here to experience it.
- 12:07Speaker 1: So let's enjoy it together. Let's experience it together. Let's
- 12:10Speaker 1: get together. Let's have you know, moments of joy this
- 12:16Speaker 1: holiday season, this Christmas season, this Honka season. This is
- 12:27Speaker 1: a season when were redy celebrate the birth of Christ.
- 12:32Speaker 1: I could consider it a rebirth. Maybe this is the
- 12:34Speaker 1: time you have your own rebirth in life, your new
- 12:42Speaker 1: journey started. I don't know what twenty twenty six brings,
- 12:52Speaker 1: but I know right now I'm on my drive to
- 12:53Speaker 1: thirty five, and that is firing me up to get
- 12:56Speaker 1: to thirty five years of life, and then we go
- 12:58Speaker 1: from there, however possible we get there. That's what I'm
- 13:03Speaker 1: focused on. I'm driven to get to thirty five, cause
- 13:08Speaker 1: thirty five years of life would be such an accomplishment,
- 13:11Speaker 1: an a tribute to my mom and my dad and
- 13:14Speaker 1: my stepdad and my grandma forgetting me here to thirty
- 13:17Speaker 1: five years, and then to myself it would be like, wow,
- 13:23Speaker 1: I did everything I could, even though I was stupid
- 13:25Speaker 1: sometimes if by twenties and went out a little too much. Well,
- 13:28Speaker 1: I'm finally waking up and not going out and going crazy.
- 13:35Speaker 1: I now feel like I'm in a position where I
- 13:37Speaker 1: just survive almost every day and do things to fight
- 13:41Speaker 1: to be here. To fight to make sure my kidney
- 13:44Speaker 1: doesn't blowout, you know, to fight to make sure my
- 13:48Speaker 1: esophagus is cleared out, to fight to make sure my
- 13:52Speaker 1: stomach is regulated. These are all things I feel like
- 13:58Speaker 1: I have to and maneuver and get through. And I
- 14:06Speaker 1: have support from a lot of incredible people, a lot
- 14:12Speaker 1: of incredible people, and they all mean a lot, you know,
- 14:17Speaker 1: so much to me. And so maybe you don't think
- 14:23Speaker 1: this deeper, this introspectively, that yeah, we won't be here
- 14:28Speaker 1: one day, but while we are here, let us be
- 14:34Speaker 1: grateful and thankful and truly live out how He wants
- 14:41Speaker 1: us to live our lives. However that might look like
- 14:44Speaker 1: in your life. However that might look like in your life.
- 14:50Speaker 1: But if we can come at it as I'm not
- 14:54Speaker 1: taking this day for granted, we can have one leg
- 14:58Speaker 1: up on life every single day. And is that the
- 15:02Speaker 1: point of this podcast? How people have one look up
- 15:04Speaker 1: on life? To make sure we get people to have
- 15:07Speaker 1: one look up on life. Well, that's how you do it.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Don't take life for granted and enjoy every moment. Tis
- 15:15Speaker 1: the season for our families, for our loved ones, for everyone,
- 15:28Speaker 1: And tis the season, as I wrote on one look
- 15:30Speaker 1: Up alex dot com, to live life to the fullest
- 15:36Speaker 1: and have one lig up on life. Here on the
- 15:40Speaker 1: One look Up Network, I'm Alex Garrett.
