- 0:26SPEAKER_15: Welcome to the O'Brien and Doug podcast.
- 0:28SPEAKER_15: I'm O'Brien.
- 0:29SPEAKER_15: I'm Eli.
- 0:32SPEAKER_15: Well, that's what it says on your name tag.
- 0:33SPEAKER_17: It does.
- 0:34SPEAKER_17: It's fancy.
- 0:35SPEAKER_15: I can't wait to tell my son that you found his name tag in the yard.
- 0:39SPEAKER_17: Our people make the difference.
- 0:43SPEAKER_15: Yes, they do.
- 0:45SPEAKER_17: And then emergency codes on the back.
- 0:48SPEAKER_17: And a barcode.
- 0:49SPEAKER_17: So big brother can track him.
- 0:51SPEAKER_15: Exactly.
- 0:52SPEAKER_17: That's probably his first time card.
- 0:54SPEAKER_15: Um.
- 0:56SPEAKER_15: So what the heck?
- 0:57SPEAKER_15: We take like a couple weeks off and everybody dies.
- 1:01SPEAKER_15: I know.
- 1:02SPEAKER_17: Ozzie died, Hulk Hogan died, Theo died.
- 1:05SPEAKER_17: Right, Malcolm Jamal Warner.
- 1:07SPEAKER_17: The heck, man.
- 1:07SPEAKER_15: Um, who else?
- 1:08SPEAKER_15: There was like two or three other ones, too.
- 1:10SPEAKER_15: Was there?
- 1:11SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 1:11SPEAKER_15: Um, but those are the those are the ones that that hit the most for us anyway.
- 1:17SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 1:17SPEAKER_15: Our generation.
- 1:18SPEAKER_15: But well, Chuck Manjone, who was a uh Oh, yeah, the Trump player.
- 1:22SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 1:24SPEAKER_15: Um and there were a couple more, too, that were maybe not like recently, but in the past two or three weeks, anyway, they passed away.
- 1:33SPEAKER_15: But it's like, my word.
- 1:34SPEAKER_15: Um dropping like flies.
- 1:36SPEAKER_15: So what the heck, man.
- 1:38SPEAKER_15: So the outpouring for Aussie did not really surprise me.
- 1:44SPEAKER_17: No.
- 1:45SPEAKER_15: Um that uh because he died like a week and a half, two weeks after that concert.
- 1:51SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 1:51SPEAKER_15: I think a lot of people were surprised that it was that quick.
- 1:54SPEAKER_17: I think so too.
- 1:55SPEAKER_17: I was like, oh, good thing we had the you know, yeah, concert and then bang.
- 1:58SPEAKER_15: Right, it's perfect timing.
- 1:59SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 2:00SPEAKER_15: Um Hulk Hogan, I uh I wasn't a wrestling guy anyway.
- 2:05SPEAKER_15: Did you watch wrestling when you were younger?
- 2:07SPEAKER_17: Just you know, whatever we could rent on videotape.
- 2:11SPEAKER_15: Yeah, you rented it on video tape?
- 2:13SPEAKER_17: Yeah, like the the WrestleMania's.
- 2:16SPEAKER_17: Really?
- 2:16SPEAKER_17: Oh yeah, me and Bob used to rent them all the time.
- 2:18SPEAKER_17: Oh.
- 2:18SPEAKER_17: And then we'd wrestle in my living room.
- 2:20SPEAKER_15: Really?
- 2:21SPEAKER_15: Yeah, oh yeah.
- 2:22SPEAKER_15: Well, we're gonna talk about Bob here in a second because he's he's uh we we we just paid him a visit.
- 2:26SPEAKER_15: We'll we'll get to that.
- 2:28SPEAKER_15: Uh but we should talk about first of all um the reason that we were gone.
- 2:33SPEAKER_15: Oh no, let's go back even further.
- 2:35SPEAKER_15: The reason that our last podcast ended so quickly.
- 2:38SPEAKER_17: Oh yeah, I forgot about that.
- 2:39SPEAKER_17: Yeah.
- 2:40SPEAKER_15: So so we and maybe nobody noticed.
- 2:45SPEAKER_15: I don't know.
- 2:45SPEAKER_17: You're probably like, thank goodness.
- 2:47SPEAKER_15: Uh over.
- 2:48SPEAKER_15: Because we did we did wrap up the podcast rather quickly last week because what you can't hear uh in and among the music that was playing, and and we were actually talking, I got a phone call from my wife that said our next door neighbor needs to go to the hospital.
- 3:04SPEAKER_15: So I ended the podcast as quickly as I could and ran over there and um he's fine.
- 3:11SPEAKER_15: Uh he had he had a couple of days of really bad sickness and felt like he needed to go uh to the hospital, so I I obliged.
- 3:19SPEAKER_15: Um and he was like two days, two to two days later, he was mowing my lawn.
- 3:26SPEAKER_15: So everything worked out.
- 3:28SPEAKER_15: All's and ends well.
- 3:29SPEAKER_15: But that's why we that's why we ended it so quickly, and it wasn't really I wasn't at liberty to say that my neighbor has to go to the hospital in the middle of it, so right.
- 3:39SPEAKER_15: But all worked out.
- 3:40SPEAKER_15: Um it's all good.
- 3:43SPEAKER_15: And then we we took the the following week off for the podcast because you had to go away.
- 3:51SPEAKER_15: I did.
- 3:53SPEAKER_17: Do ATLC.
- 3:55SPEAKER_17: ATLC.
- 3:56SPEAKER_17: There you go.
- 3:56SPEAKER_15: Okay, tell us about it.
- 3:58SPEAKER_17: It was a crazy week, that's all I'm gonna say.
- 4:01SPEAKER_15: Crazy.
- 4:01SPEAKER_17: Yeah.
- 4:02SPEAKER_15: COVID kids.
- 4:04SPEAKER_15: Oh, well, that probably explains it.
- 4:05SPEAKER_15: You don't have probably don't even have to go into detail.
- 4:08SPEAKER_15: COVID kids.
- 4:09SPEAKER_15: COVID kids.
- 4:09SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 4:10SPEAKER_17: Yeah.
- 4:12SPEAKER_17: Social development has been suspended.
- 4:15SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 4:16SPEAKER_15: So because normally you have and you're not saying that this was a bad year.
- 4:21SPEAKER_15: No, it wasn't I mean it was it was a trying year.
- 4:23SPEAKER_15: Yeah, it was more challenging than usual.
- 4:25SPEAKER_17: Yeah than usual, but uh but overall, I mean it was good.
- 4:29SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 4:29SPEAKER_17: I mean we still had a good time and everything, but whatever went wrong just seemed to just compound on each other.
- 4:36SPEAKER_17: It was it was just centered on a certain group of them.
- 4:40unknown: Yeah.
- 4:41SPEAKER_17: So what are you gonna do?
- 4:43SPEAKER_15: We survived.
- 4:44SPEAKER_15: That's that's still a thing.
- 4:45SPEAKER_15: COVID kid.
- 4:46SPEAKER_15: Yeah, you know, COVID kids.
- 4:48SPEAKER_15: We see that in school too.
- 4:49SPEAKER_15: Yeah, I'm sure.
- 4:50SPEAKER_15: Oh, I'm sure.
- 4:50SPEAKER_15: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:51SPEAKER_15: Behaviors and but the staff did great.
- 4:54SPEAKER_17: Yeah.
- 4:54SPEAKER_17: Staff was awesome, and uh everybody dealt with it.
- 4:57SPEAKER_17: And I think I got like four or five hours of sleep every night.
- 5:01SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 5:02SPEAKER_15: Let's let's it was it was Yes, that's right.
- 5:06SPEAKER_15: Because they put you in a different building this year.
- 5:07SPEAKER_17: Well, yeah, they put us in the lodge at UMFK, which is uh which is a really nice dorm.
- 5:12SPEAKER_17: It's got an elevator and you got your private, you know, if you're in a suite with like three or other four other people, you all it's it has its own each suite has its own bathroom.
- 5:21SPEAKER_17: Sure.
- 5:21SPEAKER_17: And I was in a single, so I had you know, it was just me and my own bathroom.
- 5:26SPEAKER_17: I was like, this is great.
- 5:27SPEAKER_17: But it was on the third floor and there's no air conditioning.
- 5:30SPEAKER_17: So it was so it was like hot all the time.
- 5:33SPEAKER_17: I mean, and the window would only open like six inches.
- 5:35SPEAKER_15: Right, and the fan didn't do any fan didn't do any good, so it was like, what the you know, yeah.
- 5:39SPEAKER_15: So every night it was just like boiling hot in there, and then you know, only get a few hours of sleep and then get up and and you went into that uh sleep deprived as well because Yeah, because of our Yeah, we should talk about that a little bit.
- 5:53SPEAKER_17: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:54SPEAKER_15: So we were really excited because it was gonna be fun.
- 5:57SPEAKER_15: And it was to a but um But we paid for it.
- 6:01SPEAKER_15: We did because we're not as young as we used to be.
- 6:04SPEAKER_17: No, um I don't even you know, I I think about it, I don't I'm not even sure we could have done it back then on our prime.
- 6:11SPEAKER_17: I mean we would we could have done it probably a lot easier and recovered a lot faster, but it still would have been a long night.
- 6:18SPEAKER_15: Yeah, what we're talking about is is uh was it last Friday?
- 6:21SPEAKER_15: Two Fridays ago.
- 6:22SPEAKER_17: Not this past Friday, but the Friday before.
- 6:24SPEAKER_17: Right, yeah.
- 6:25SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 6:25SPEAKER_15: And we well, our our band Skinny Elvis, which essentially is the rhythm section of um Star City Syndicate.
- 6:36SPEAKER_15: Um we we opened the show for the Star City Syndicate, which meant we started at five.
- 6:42SPEAKER_15: We played for a couple hours.
- 6:44SPEAKER_15: Yep.
- 6:44SPEAKER_15: We took a break, it wasn't for that long.
- 6:46SPEAKER_17: Yeah, about ten minutes, yeah.
- 6:47SPEAKER_15: And and then we had about fifteen or twenty minutes before the Star City Syndicate played.
- 6:53SPEAKER_15: So we were on stage pretty much from five to ten thirty.
- 6:56SPEAKER_17: Yeah.
- 6:58SPEAKER_15: And that sucked.
- 7:00SPEAKER_17: Yeah, you know, towards the end of it.
- 7:02SPEAKER_17: I mean, I was okay for like the first half hour of the syndicate show.
- 7:06SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 7:07SPEAKER_17: But after that, I was just like, I'm exhausted.
- 7:09SPEAKER_15: Oh yeah.
- 7:10SPEAKER_17: Let's let's call it.
- 7:11SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 7:12SPEAKER_17: Let's let's let's do one more song and then I'm gonna go home.
- 7:15SPEAKER_15: I don't know that I was exhausted yet, but my back was killing me.
- 7:18SPEAKER_17: Oh, I mean, yeah.
- 7:19SPEAKER_17: You know everything hurting.
- 7:20SPEAKER_15: I can imagine because I and I wore my sneakers.
- 7:23SPEAKER_15: I can imagine if I wore these up there on stage, I would have been in a lot of pain.
- 7:27SPEAKER_17: Yeah.
- 7:28SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 7:28SPEAKER_15: But uh, and so Skinny Elvis, I don't know how we went over.
- 7:32SPEAKER_15: I mean I think it's hard to tell.
- 7:33SPEAKER_15: It is hard to tell.
- 7:34SPEAKER_15: You know.
- 7:35SPEAKER_15: Um, I know that my my youngest was dancing to Skinny Elvis and she said something to me after because we so Doug sings the majority of the songs and does a fantastic job.
- 7:46SPEAKER_15: And uh but we added like like like late in our incarnation, Sarah on keyboards, and we found out she can really sing.
- 7:59SPEAKER_15: Heck yeah.
- 8:00SPEAKER_15: So we threw in a couple songs for her to sing, and she killed them.
- 8:03SPEAKER_17: Oh yeah.
- 8:04SPEAKER_15: When I say killed, I meant nailed.
- 8:06SPEAKER_15: She nailed them, they were fantastic.
- 8:08SPEAKER_15: And um so my daughter said, uh, I'm sorry, Dad, but I like skinny Elvis better.
- 8:15SPEAKER_15: And I said, Why?
- 8:16SPEAKER_15: She says, Well, the songs are so much better.
- 8:19SPEAKER_15: I was like, Okay.
- 8:20SPEAKER_15: And then she goes, And Sarah's voice is amazing.
- 8:24SPEAKER_15: I know, right?
- 8:24SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 8:25SPEAKER_15: I didn't I didn't say, What about Doug?
- 8:27SPEAKER_15: Because she just you're like part of the family.
- 8:29SPEAKER_15: So she says, Yeah.
- 8:31SPEAKER_17: Right.
- 8:31SPEAKER_17: Just that weird uncle that hangs around.
- 8:33SPEAKER_17: He lives in our basement.
- 8:35SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 8:36SPEAKER_15: But uh I I think we played pretty well, except for the last song, because I forgot that guitar part and I couldn't I couldn't find it.
- 8:43SPEAKER_15: Uh my uh My Hero from Foo Fighters.
- 8:46SPEAKER_17: I didn't even notice.
- 8:47SPEAKER_17: By that point I was in so much pain, I was just like, you know, let's just get it over with.
- 8:50SPEAKER_15: Really?
- 8:51SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 8:51SPEAKER_15: Well, that whole there goes my hero, yeah.
- 8:54SPEAKER_15: Guitar da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da I didn't even play that because I didn't even notice, man.
- 8:59SPEAKER_15: You didn't even notice?
- 9:00SPEAKER_15: Didn't even notice.
- 9:00SPEAKER_17: I was just trying to get through the song.
- 9:02SPEAKER_17: Really?
- 9:02SPEAKER_17: I was just trying to get through it.
- 9:04SPEAKER_17: Oh no.
- 9:04SPEAKER_15: Just powering through it.
- 9:05SPEAKER_15: I was like, I felt like crap after that.
- 9:07SPEAKER_15: I was like, well, I blew that one.
- 9:08SPEAKER_17: Yeah, well.
- 9:09SPEAKER_15: But anyway.
- 9:10SPEAKER_15: Um I think it was for for our first and the crowd, I I don't know what the the crowd didn't know what to think.
- 9:17SPEAKER_15: Uh not really.
- 9:18SPEAKER_17: Uh they were all there, they were all there to see the syndicate.
- 9:22SPEAKER_15: Yeah, and it was a great crowd for the syndicate.
- 9:24SPEAKER_15: Yeah, it was huge, and I think they were appreciative.
- 9:27SPEAKER_15: But uh yeah, no, it was weird.
- 9:30SPEAKER_15: Anyway.
- 9:31SPEAKER_17: But we survived.
- 9:32SPEAKER_15: We survived, we survived.
- 9:33SPEAKER_15: And then you went away to ATLC, and then so we took the week off, and I sent you a message uh I think either early last week.
- 9:42SPEAKER_15: Yeah, early last week.
- 9:43SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 9:44SPEAKER_15: Uh, because I found out that our buddy Bob um was having his first ever art show.
- 9:52SPEAKER_15: And when I say first ever, this is a guy who went to college for art.
- 9:57SPEAKER_15: He got a degree in art.
- 9:59SPEAKER_17: Yeah.
- 9:59SPEAKER_17: Well, still has a degree in art.
- 10:01SPEAKER_15: Still has a degree in art.
- 10:02SPEAKER_17: And uh you made it sound like you turned it in.
- 10:04SPEAKER_17: I've been using it.
- 10:06SPEAKER_17: Can I get my money back?
- 10:07SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 10:07SPEAKER_15: And we've always loved everything that he's done, you know, but he Well, out of the three of us, he's the most creative.
- 10:14SPEAKER_15: Oh, for sure.
- 10:15SPEAKER_15: You know, for sure.
- 10:16SPEAKER_15: Um because he's a great writer as well.
- 10:18SPEAKER_15: Yeah, exactly.
- 10:19SPEAKER_15: Short stories and a really, really good, really gifted kid.
- 10:23SPEAKER_15: Anyway, um he and for uh a job, he's a photographer.
- 10:28SPEAKER_15: So I mean he's got a great eye anyway.
- 10:30SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 10:30SPEAKER_15: So he he has always drawn and painted and stuff, but he just recently, I would say this year, maybe late last year, he's been taking it seriously.
- 10:41SPEAKER_17: I think yeah I think ever since he got back from Ireland.
- 10:44SPEAKER_15: Maybe.
- 10:45SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 10:46SPEAKER_17: Kind of inspired him, I think.
- 10:47SPEAKER_15: But he I just want to make sure that's still going.
- 10:51SPEAKER_15: He um he's been really putting his nose to the grindstone and and creating a lot of art.
- 10:57SPEAKER_15: Oh yeah.
- 10:58SPEAKER_15: So um someone in his town said, well, we have a um an art walk, Friday art walk.
- 11:06SPEAKER_15: A lot of little towns do.
- 11:07SPEAKER_15: And he lives along the coast.
- 11:09SPEAKER_15: And so they offered him a um place to showcase his art.
- 11:15SPEAKER_15: Both photography and painting.
- 11:18SPEAKER_15: And so I saw that he was having it, and he was it's about four hours away.
- 11:22SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 11:23SPEAKER_15: And so um I said to to Doug via text, I said, Well, I know you're gonna be exhausted, but what do you think about you and I driving down on Friday morning?
- 11:35SPEAKER_15: We can go to Bangor, we can go to Bull Moose, because we love that, and then just going a little further and and and surprising Bob.
- 11:44SPEAKER_15: And automatically you were like, Yep, I'm on board.
- 11:47SPEAKER_15: Done! So that's what we did, and we contemplated recording the podcast on the way down because that would be funny.
- 11:54SPEAKER_17: It would have been funny.
- 11:55SPEAKER_15: Um, but I thought twice before I left the house, and I was like, you know what, I want this to just to be fun and not work not at work, and you know we we did video it when we surprised Bob.
- 12:09SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 12:09SPEAKER_15: Um and it was his his reaction was classic.
- 12:14SPEAKER_17: So funny.
- 12:14SPEAKER_17: So funny.
- 12:15SPEAKER_17: So funny.
- 12:15SPEAKER_17: So it was the best part of the day.
- 12:17SPEAKER_17: It was.
- 12:17SPEAKER_17: Yeah.
- 12:18SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 12:18SPEAKER_15: Um, and his art was amazing, and he did very well.
- 12:24SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 12:24SPEAKER_15: Sold a l sold a bunch of things.
- 12:26SPEAKER_15: Um so we're we're pretty proud of him.
- 12:29SPEAKER_15: But uh we pulled one over on him.
- 12:31SPEAKER_17: Oh yeah, we got him good.
- 12:32SPEAKER_15: For sure.
- 12:33SPEAKER_15: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:34SPEAKER_15: So he said he's gonna get us back.
- 12:36SPEAKER_15: Point us.
- 12:37SPEAKER_15: I don't know how that's gonna happen, but I told him I said, I'll s I'll send you our band schedule.
- 12:41SPEAKER_15: You can come to a show and and pull up your top or something.
- 12:46SPEAKER_17: Take it all off.
- 12:49SPEAKER_15: So anyway, that was um that was what we did over the past uh couple of weeks.
- 12:54SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 12:54SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 12:55SPEAKER_15: It's been eventful.
- 12:56SPEAKER_15: I'm trying to think if there's anything else that I missed.
- 12:58SPEAKER_15: I don't I don't think so.
- 12:59SPEAKER_15: I think that pretty much covers it.
- 13:00SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 13:01SPEAKER_15: Um couple of things to talk about.
- 13:04SPEAKER_15: Uh did you have anything you want to talk about?
- 13:07SPEAKER_15: Did I?
- 13:08SPEAKER_15: I don't know.
- 13:10SPEAKER_15: I forgot to ask you before we before we started.
- 13:12SPEAKER_17: I don't think so.
- 13:13SPEAKER_15: No?
- 13:14SPEAKER_17: We well, we should talk about what we got a blue mo blue moose.
- 13:17SPEAKER_17: Blue moose?
- 13:18SPEAKER_17: Bull moose.
- 13:19SPEAKER_15: You got more than I did.
- 13:20SPEAKER_15: I just want to, if my wife is listening, I just want to.
- 13:22SPEAKER_17: Doug bought more.
- 13:23SPEAKER_15: Doug got more.
- 13:24SPEAKER_17: Well, I got a Dream Theater alb album, one of my favorite albums, Scenes from Memory, and I got your favorite album?
- 13:30SPEAKER_15: Do you already have it?
- 13:31SPEAKER_17: I have it on I I got it on iTunes.
- 13:34SPEAKER_17: Oh, digital.
- 13:34SPEAKER_17: I don't have I don't have a copy of it.
- 13:36SPEAKER_17: Now I have a physical copy of it.
- 13:38SPEAKER_17: And I got the extended version of Moving Pictures by Rush.
- 13:42SPEAKER_15: Nice.
- 13:42SPEAKER_17: And I got the new uh Metallica remastered load load album.
- 13:48SPEAKER_15: Have you listened to it yet?
- 13:49SPEAKER_17: No, haven't you taken it out of the plastic yet?
- 13:51SPEAKER_15: There's X is there bonus tracks?
- 13:52SPEAKER_17: Yeah, there's there's a bonus, there's like three C there's like a DVD of live stuff.

- 14:04SPEAKER_16: Yeah.
- 14:05SPEAKER_16: That was cool.
- 14:05SPEAKER_15: It was cool.
- 14:06SPEAKER_15: Yeah, I mean, I like I said, I don't know that I like it more than the original, but it was pretty pretty awesome.
- 14:12SPEAKER_17: Yeah, I liked it, man.
- 14:13SPEAKER_15: Anyway.
- 14:13SPEAKER_16: It was pretty awesome.
- 14:15SPEAKER_15: So what else did you get?
- 14:16SPEAKER_15: Is that it?
- 14:17SPEAKER_15: That was it.
- 14:17SPEAKER_15: That was it.
- 14:18SPEAKER_15: Alright, so I got what did I get?

- 14:28SPEAKER_15: And what was the what was the other one that I got?
- 14:30SPEAKER_17: I don't remember the other one you got.
- 14:32SPEAKER_17: Because you you you grabbed a bunch of things, then you put a bunch of things on the bottom.
- 14:35SPEAKER_17: I always do that.
- 14:35SPEAKER_17: So I always do that.
- 14:36SPEAKER_17: I got I got lost after a while.
- 14:38SPEAKER_15: Cody Johnson and the other one was Oh my word.
- 14:46SPEAKER_15: Obviously, it wasn't that memorable.
- 14:49SPEAKER_17: Um Yeah, I mean, man.
- 14:51SPEAKER_17: Are they down here?
- 14:52SPEAKER_15: It's not down here, it's still upstairs.
- 14:56SPEAKER_15: I don't know.
- 14:56SPEAKER_17: But we did go to Hobby Lobby.
- 14:58SPEAKER_17: Oh, that was fun.
- 14:59SPEAKER_15: Doug's first excursion to Hobby Lobby ever.
- 15:02SPEAKER_17: Yeah.
- 15:03SPEAKER_15: And uh I took so I told Doug, I said, I want you to take you to this one section.
- 15:08SPEAKER_15: Uh, right in the middle of the store, which is all like things you might hang on your wall.
- 15:13SPEAKER_17: Yeah, it's all that decorative knickknacks and stuff like that.
- 15:17SPEAKER_15: But but things that I I appreciate.
- 15:19SPEAKER_15: Every time I go in there, I'm like, oh, I want that.
- 15:21SPEAKER_15: And it's like an on-air sign or a guitar or fender guitar pick or you know, things like that.
- 15:27SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 15:27SPEAKER_15: And I showed it to him, and then I turned around, I was like, and then there's this.
- 15:31SPEAKER_15: And it's all this, you know.
- 15:33SPEAKER_15: It's all like military.
- 15:34SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 15:34SPEAKER_15: And you were like freaking out.
- 15:36SPEAKER_17: Yeah, it was cool, man.
- 15:37SPEAKER_17: Yeah.
- 15:37SPEAKER_17: I was like, wow, I wasn't expecting this in the middle of uh, you know, an arts and crafts.
- 15:42SPEAKER_17: You know, you know, of of Fuffy Walmart, you know.
- 15:46SPEAKER_17: It was it was pretty fun, man.
- 15:48SPEAKER_17: Yeah, yeah, no, it was cool.
- 15:49SPEAKER_17: We freaked out the cashier.
- 15:51unknown: Yeah.
- 15:52SPEAKER_17: You were asking about wigs.
- 15:53SPEAKER_15: Yeah, because we were we were on our way to to surprise Bob and I I had originally wanted to go in disguise.
- 15:59SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 15:59SPEAKER_15: And I said, Do you have any wigs?
- 16:01SPEAKER_15: He's like, uh, no.
- 16:03SPEAKER_17: He was he looked at us both of them really weird, and he's like, No.
- 16:08SPEAKER_17: And then he's like, nobody's ever asked me that before.
- 16:10SPEAKER_17: And I'm like, everybody's asked that.
- 16:13SPEAKER_15: And then we I said, let's go to Party City and and get wigs.
- 16:16SPEAKER_15: And then I turned to you and I said, Are you even gonna wear a wig?
- 16:19SPEAKER_15: And you're like, no, no, okay, well, then we're not gonna do it.
- 16:22SPEAKER_17: Well, it's probably it's probably a good thing we didn't try it because we would just look ridiculous.
- 16:26SPEAKER_17: Oh, yeah.
- 16:27SPEAKER_17: Because the way the the thing was set up where Bob was is like it was on the it was like it was somebody's yeah barn.
- 16:33SPEAKER_15: Yeah, it wasn't what I expected.
- 16:34SPEAKER_17: Yeah, and we were expecting like a an art gallery, yeah, quote unquote.
- 16:38SPEAKER_17: Yeah, but it was really just somebody's like antique barn.
- 16:41SPEAKER_17: They run out of the you know, out of the barn next to their house.
- 16:44SPEAKER_15: Yeah, and they could see us coming.
- 16:45SPEAKER_17: Yeah, they because I mean Bob saw us at the end of the driveway.
- 16:48SPEAKER_15: Yeah, so it would have been.
- 16:50SPEAKER_17: So it would have been like, yeah, okay.
- 16:52SPEAKER_17: You've been like, what are you two morons doing?
- 16:55SPEAKER_17: He did call us idiots.
- 16:56SPEAKER_15: I was just gonna say, he did call us idiots.
- 16:58SPEAKER_17: Yeah, but it's well, it's warranted.
- 16:59SPEAKER_17: It is true.
- 17:00SPEAKER_17: Yeah, we are we are idiots, but we had we had a good time.
- 17:03SPEAKER_17: That was a fun road trip.
- 17:04SPEAKER_17: It was.
- 17:04SPEAKER_15: I mean, it was you know, quick and yeah, but yeah, no, it was good to see him and and the kids and Tiff.
- 17:10SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 17:10SPEAKER_15: Yeah, no, it was good.
- 17:11SPEAKER_15: It was good.
- 17:12SPEAKER_15: Um, okay, a couple of things in music news.
- 17:15SPEAKER_15: The Billy Joel documentary comes out this Friday.
- 17:19SPEAKER_15: Last Friday.
- 17:20SPEAKER_15: Last Friday?
- 17:21SPEAKER_15: It comes out.
- 17:21SPEAKER_15: Last Friday.
- 17:22SPEAKER_15: Was it last Friday?
- 17:23SPEAKER_15: I think it was last Friday.
- 17:23SPEAKER_15: It was only on HBO though.
- 17:25SPEAKER_15: You know, which means I can't watch it.
- 17:27SPEAKER_15: No.
- 17:27SPEAKER_15: But I thought you would appreciate this.
- 17:30SPEAKER_15: Um he's doing all kinds of publicity for for the documentary.
- 17:35SPEAKER_15: And um he you know how much of a Beatles fan he is.
- 17:41SPEAKER_15: Huge.
- 17:42SPEAKER_15: Huge huge.
- 17:44SPEAKER_15: Um he thinks the Beatles White album is a poor album.
- 17:49SPEAKER_15: Would you agree with that?
- 17:50SPEAKER_17: He's not entirely wrong.
- 17:51SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 17:52SPEAKER_17: I mean, I I like it, but it it's kind of a mess.
- 17:55SPEAKER_15: Yeah, he's not saying he didn't like it.
- 17:57SPEAKER_15: No.
- 17:57SPEAKER_15: But he's he well, this is what he said.
- 17:59SPEAKER_15: Um he said, I'm not a big fan of the White Album.
- 18:03SPEAKER_15: I hear it as a collection of half-assed songs that they didn't finish writing because they were too stoned or they didn't care anymore.
- 18:10SPEAKER_15: That's pretty that's pretty accurate.
- 18:12SPEAKER_15: He says, I think I think he says, I think John was kind of disassociated somewhat at that point.
- 18:17SPEAKER_15: I think Paul was carrying the weight.
- 18:19SPEAKER_15: Um both songwriters were pursuing hit singles in an era before albums became the focus of record sales.
- 18:26SPEAKER_15: Um and he said that McCartney's uh compositions were more successful on the seven-inch vinyl format, and he has a theory.
- 18:34SPEAKER_15: He says, I think they almost broke up a couple of times, just like a marriage, but it was never talked about.
- 18:39SPEAKER_15: It had had to look smoothed over for the ten years that they were famous.
- 18:43SPEAKER_15: He says, 'I love the Beatles more than anybody, and he and uh George Martin was the fifth Beatle,' and he he had a chance to have George Martin as his producer.
- 18:52SPEAKER_15: Oh and he he turned it down.
- 18:55SPEAKER_15: Why?
- 18:56SPEAKER_15: Uh he says, he says, uh, wait, you're not gonna have George Martin produce you?
- 19:00SPEAKER_15: Your your big problem is production.
- 19:02SPEAKER_15: I know, but he wants to not use my band, and that's part of my stuff.
- 19:06SPEAKER_15: I can see that.
- 19:07SPEAKER_15: So he was gonna change, he was gonna change his band and stuff.
- 19:09SPEAKER_15: So um, but I can't wait to see.
- 19:12SPEAKER_15: He's he's got um there's a there's a bunch of uh music coming out related to that documentary, like never before heard stuff.
- 19:19SPEAKER_15: That'll be cool.
- 19:20SPEAKER_15: So I'm I'm excited about seeing that.
- 19:21SPEAKER_15: I don't know when I'll ever get to see it because I don't have HBO.
- 19:25SPEAKER_17: Yeah, I don't either, but whatever.
- 19:27SPEAKER_17: But he he's not wrong.
- 19:28SPEAKER_17: I mean the white album, if you think about it in Beatles History, yeah, is the beginning of the end.
- 19:34SPEAKER_15: Yeah, no, I agree.
- 19:35SPEAKER_17: And and and there are a lot of great songs on there, but there are a lot of garbage songs on there.
- 19:40SPEAKER_17: Yeah, well, I mean it could have been a one good album, but no, they made it a double album and it made it just happy.
- 19:45SPEAKER_15: Absolutely.
- 19:45SPEAKER_15: And that's the way I look at it too.
- 19:47SPEAKER_15: You know, Blackbird's on there.
- 19:48SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 19:49SPEAKER_17: Um there's a happiness is a warm gun is one of my favorite songs.
- 19:52SPEAKER_15: Right.
- 19:52SPEAKER_17: It's on there.
- 19:53SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 19:53SPEAKER_17: You know?
- 19:53SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 19:54SPEAKER_17: It's just it's just it it could have been better.
- 19:56SPEAKER_17: But I think I think there was so much going on.
- 19:58SPEAKER_17: I mean, John was in the middle of his heroin addiction.
- 20:01SPEAKER_12: Yeah.
- 20:02SPEAKER_17: The woman.
- 20:08SPEAKER_15: That one.
- 20:11SPEAKER_15: I'm gonna take that out of context and just play it through the rest of the podcast.
- 20:16SPEAKER_15: Please do.
- 20:17SPEAKER_17: And uh Yoko is what he's talking about.
- 20:19SPEAKER_17: Oh, did I say her name?
- 20:20SPEAKER_17: I'm sorry.
- 20:23SPEAKER_17: Um, you know, and then but I I think it gave George a an opportunity to you know, yeah, showcase what he could do.
- 20:31SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 20:31SPEAKER_17: And of course, Ringo was just Ringo through the whole thing.
- 20:34SPEAKER_15: Right.
- 20:34SPEAKER_15: You know, so that best song on there.
- 20:36SPEAKER_17: Number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine.
- 20:41SPEAKER_15: Um, so I thought that was interesting.
- 20:42SPEAKER_15: And then the other thing I want to talk about because um actually I'll talk about this next, but uh, have you seen the Spinal Tap 2 trailer yet?
- 20:50SPEAKER_15: Yes! I have not.
- 20:51SPEAKER_15: So funny.
- 20:52SPEAKER_17: I have no It's gonna be so good.
- 20:54SPEAKER_17: I mean, if I'm just you know, I know they put all the best scenes in the trailer.
- 20:58SPEAKER_17: In the trailer, but it's gonna be freaking great.
- 21:01SPEAKER_15: Okay.
- 21:02SPEAKER_15: I wanna watch it with you.
- 21:03SPEAKER_15: So, because I have not seen it yet.
- 21:06SPEAKER_15: So let's see.
- 21:09SPEAKER_15: Hi.
- 21:10SPEAKER_09: I'm Marty DeBurgy.
- 21:12SPEAKER_09: Forty years ago, I was honored to direct a film called This is Spinal Tap.
- 21:19SPEAKER_11: The numbers will go to eleven.
- 21:22SPEAKER_11: One left.
- 21:22SPEAKER_11: Why don't you just make 10 louder and make 10 be the top number and make that a little louder?
- 21:31SPEAKER_11: Please go to 11.
- 21:38SPEAKER_09: Yeah, let's go.
- 21:39SPEAKER_09: Yeah, yeah.
- 21:41SPEAKER_09: A lot has happened since the last time I told you.
- 22:01SPEAKER_09: An evening with Stormy Daniels.
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: Obviously the regular merch.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: And Hope has had a rather brilliant idea.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: Tap or as his artist.
- 22:11SPEAKER_10: So it's Tapoard.
- 22:12SPEAKER_10: We're still short a drummer.
- 22:14SPEAKER_07: What happened to him?
- 22:15SPEAKER_10: Sneezed himself into oblivion.
- 22:18SPEAKER_10: So you think he might fill the bill?
- 22:20SPEAKER_07: I don't want to die.
- 22:24SPEAKER_09: Drummers.
- 22:27SPEAKER_09: The thing that you guys had as kids, is that still there?
- 22:32SPEAKER_09: I'm in a band that constantly is breaking apart and coming back together.
- 22:37SPEAKER_09: But the more we retreat into the music, the nicer things become.
- 22:42SPEAKER_10: Not to be profound or anything, and it would be the first time for me.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: What we need to do is secure your legacy.
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: If during the gig, at least one, but ideally no more than two of you were to die, would you settle for a coma?
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, that's interesting.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: That's a great bit of thinking outside.
- 23:18SPEAKER_01: Well, the literal box, I suppose.
- 23:19SPEAKER_01: Actually.
- 23:22SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 23:23SPEAKER_17: I'm telling you, man, this is gonna be great.
- 23:25SPEAKER_17: Wow.
- 23:26SPEAKER_17: I have a feeling it's just gonna be great.
- 23:27SPEAKER_15: And you know, uh, just like the original, all kinds of cameos in there.
- 23:31SPEAKER_17: Oh yeah.
- 23:32SPEAKER_15: Yeah, Paul McCartney's in the case.
- 23:33SPEAKER_15: Paul McCartney, Elton John, um, Quest Love.
- 23:36SPEAKER_15: When that comes to the theater we have we have to go.
- 23:39SPEAKER_15: We have to go together.
- 23:40SPEAKER_15: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 23:41SPEAKER_15: See that movie.
- 23:41SPEAKER_15: Yeah, absolutely.
- 23:42SPEAKER_15: Because Dow will probably get that.
- 23:44SPEAKER_15: He better.
- 23:44SPEAKER_15: Yeah, I would I would think.
- 23:46SPEAKER_15: Oh my word, that's that's how to do it right.
- 23:49SPEAKER_15: You know?
- 23:49SPEAKER_17: Well, I'm glad because the first Spinal Tap movie is them on tour.
- 23:54SPEAKER_17: But this is just a reunion concert, so it doesn't have to be like, you know, so it's just them getting ready for the concert.
- 24:00SPEAKER_15: Just seeing the footage of what they're doing now is that.
- 24:02SPEAKER_15: Exactly.
- 24:02SPEAKER_17: That's that's it's gonna be when he's playing in that pub with those eyes.
- 24:06SPEAKER_17: Can he just like brrrrr.
- 24:11SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 24:11SPEAKER_15: No, when that when that comes, we have to go see that.
- 24:14SPEAKER_15: Oh my god.
- 24:14SPEAKER_15: Final Tap 2, the end continues.
- 24:16SPEAKER_17: It's gonna be so good, man.
- 24:18SPEAKER_15: Um, alright, moving on.
- 24:20SPEAKER_15: This whole AI thing is ticking me off.
- 24:23SPEAKER_17: I've been watching a lot of stuff on it.
- 24:25SPEAKER_17: Um like Rick Beato and he's been talking a lot about late.
- 24:29SPEAKER_17: Yeah.
- 24:29SPEAKER_17: Wings of uh Phil from Wings of Pegasus.
- 24:31SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 24:32SPEAKER_15: I uh I I see advertisements also.
- 24:37SPEAKER_15: Like I saw one today, as a matter of fact, I was on I was scrolling on Instagram and and this woman says, um this is uh how easy it is.
- 24:47SPEAKER_15: And it's for an AI um tool, like an AI music creator.
- 24:54SPEAKER_15: Uh Umo?
- 24:55SPEAKER_15: Sumo?
- 24:56SPEAKER_17: Sumo, uh Sumo Suno.
- 24:58SPEAKER_15: Suno.
- 24:59SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 24:59SPEAKER_15: Yeah, okay.
- 25:00SPEAKER_15: So it's an advertisement for that.
- 25:01SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 25:01SPEAKER_15: And she's like, this is a song that I did, uh recorded, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 25:07SPEAKER_15: And this is it with with AI.
- 25:10SPEAKER_15: So in other words, uh what I gathered was um it the AI uh made uh mastered it for her.
- 25:18SPEAKER_15: Okay, so I can see that.
- 25:21SPEAKER_15: But when you're creating things from thin air, well, you're not even creating it.
- 25:27SPEAKER_17: AI is creating Yeah, you're not creating anything.
- 25:29SPEAKER_17: And you're taking credit for it.
- 25:30SPEAKER_17: You're just like, hey, make a country western song with a male singer about you know, driving my pickup truck down a field and it'll come up with Yeah.
- 25:42SPEAKER_17: A song for you.
- 25:42SPEAKER_15: And that's not being creative.
- 25:44SPEAKER_15: We were listening to a podcast on the way down to to see Bob, and they were talking about how um they have used it just to see what it does, and it's scary how good Okay, not to change the subject, but why are you wearing your ready wing on your pinky finger?
- 25:58SPEAKER_15: Uh sometimes when it gets like really hot and humid, I get like um um like I can't because my knuckles are so huge.
- 26:05SPEAKER_15: Oh, okay.
- 26:06SPEAKER_15: So I can't get it get it off.
- 26:08SPEAKER_15: I gotcha.
- 26:09SPEAKER_15: So sometimes I'll just kinda get it off so I can't like write that because my knuckles are so big.
- 26:15SPEAKER_17: Okay, I was just curious.
- 26:16SPEAKER_17: Yeah.
- 26:16SPEAKER_17: Not not to change the subject, but yeah.
- 26:20SPEAKER_15: Um very fancy.
- 26:22SPEAKER_15: Thanks.
- 26:23SPEAKER_15: And yeah, so some of them were using it and and just blown away by the results, you know, of the of it, because it sounds like a song that's on the radio.
- 26:30SPEAKER_15: It does, yeah.
- 26:31SPEAKER_15: So I just read this headline and um I had to I had to um read it.
- 26:38SPEAKER_15: Toto's new song was not by Toto.
- 26:42SPEAKER_15: Uh-huh.
- 26:42SPEAKER_15: Uh have you heard anything about this?
- 26:44SPEAKER_17: I have not heard anything about this.
- 26:46SPEAKER_15: Um let's see.
- 26:47SPEAKER_15: I'm gonna read the article.
- 26:48SPEAKER_15: Your article is by Nick Doriso on Ultimate Classic Rock.
- 26:53SPEAKER_15: Blaze Foley, a long-dead Texas singer-songwriter, made headlines this week when a new song appeared on Spotify.
- 27:00SPEAKER_15: But the song Together wasn't an unearthed gem from the past.
- 27:03SPEAKER_15: Instead, the track appeared to be AI generated.
- 27:06SPEAKER_15: The same thing has happened to Toto, a band that is on tour again but no longer produces new music.
- 27:12SPEAKER_15: At least not now.
- 27:13SPEAKER_15: A previously unheard fake instrumental called Name This Night was added to Toto's official Spotify profile.
- 27:22SPEAKER_15: Now, how was it added to their official profile?
- 27:25SPEAKER_15: Spotify's doing Who has access to that?
- 27:27SPEAKER_15: Well, I don't know.
- 27:28SPEAKER_15: Uh though it's since been removed.
- 27:30SPEAKER_15: The accompanying image of a Twilight Sunset is noticeably generic and doesn't feature Toto's familiar logo.
- 27:36SPEAKER_15: Steve Lucith says, I'm surprised Spotify let this on.
- 27:40SPEAKER_15: Um he confirmed that he filed a formal complaint.
- 27:43SPEAKER_15: There's not much we can do but catch them and have it taken down.
- 27:46SPEAKER_15: It's a sh it's shameless now.
- 27:48SPEAKER_15: Name this night can still be found on YouTube, however, as well as Apple Music and Tidal.
- 27:54SPEAKER_15: Um Lukather, an early critic of streamers before he negotiated a new deal, said he has larger worries now.
- 28:02SPEAKER_15: It will be worse if, say, they take our entire catalog and then AI makes a new total record that sounds really close to us, but it's not.
- 28:11SPEAKER_17: Um Yeah, but AI already has it.
- 28:17SPEAKER_15: AI already has what?
- 28:18SPEAKER_17: Already has their catalog.
- 28:20SPEAKER_17: If it's on the internet, AI has it.
- 28:22SPEAKER_15: That's true.
- 28:23SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 28:24SPEAKER_15: I mean, yeah.
- 28:24SPEAKER_17: There's no stopping them now.
- 28:26SPEAKER_15: Um he says it's kind of surprising that Spotify doesn't have a security fix for this type of action, and I think the responsibility is all on Spotify.
- 28:33SPEAKER_15: I told you, didn't I say Spotify was the devil a long time ago?
- 28:36SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 28:36SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 28:37SPEAKER_15: We've been saying that for a while.
- 28:38SPEAKER_15: Downfall of music.
- 28:40SPEAKER_15: Uh they could fix this problem.
- 28:41SPEAKER_15: One of their talented software engineers could stop this fraudulent practice in its tracks if they had the will to do so, and I think they should take that responsibility and do something quickly.
- 28:49SPEAKER_15: Um so I have the track uh that's supposedly Toto, but it's not Toto.
- 28:55SPEAKER_15: Um and it's an instrumental, it's called Name This Night, so we're gonna listen to it.
- 28:59SPEAKER_15: And you and I are Toto Freaks.
- 29:02SPEAKER_15: Yes.
- 29:03SPEAKER_15: So we could tell if it sounds like Toto.
- 29:06SPEAKER_15: Right.
- 29:06SPEAKER_15: So let's just I've I've not heard this yet in either of you.
- 29:42SPEAKER_15: I mean, melodically, it could be a total style.
- 29:51SPEAKER_17: Yeah.
- 29:52SPEAKER_17: That's not total style, man.
- 29:55SPEAKER_17: It's just literally the same thing over and over and over again.
- 30:08SPEAKER_17: So I mean there's literally been no guitar.
- 30:38SPEAKER_17: And there's nothing to the song.
- 30:40SPEAKER_17: Nothing.
- 30:40SPEAKER_17: It's the same, it's literally the same thing over.
- 30:45SPEAKER_17: Yeah, it's it's it's very monotonous, actually.
- 30:53SPEAKER_15: It's just like a like a I don't want to say a 50s progression, but it's it's just a regular chord progression.
- 30:59SPEAKER_15: I mean it's I think it's a B.
- 31:03SPEAKER_15: It's not a B minor, it's a B.
- 31:08SPEAKER_15: And then the F sharp is a little weird.
- 31:16SPEAKER_15: Anyway, yeah, no, I mean, I can see even the casual Toto fan would would be able to call that out though.
- 31:25SPEAKER_17: I would think so.
- 31:26SPEAKER_15: I would think.
- 31:26SPEAKER_15: You know, I mean, I can see how one might mistake it for Toto just because of the sound of the piano and um I guess, but any discerning Toto fan would be.
- 31:39SPEAKER_17: I mean when there's no guitar in it, you gotta question it.
- 31:42SPEAKER_15: Oh yeah.
- 31:42SPEAKER_15: Well, I mean when that first started, and and then the whole band came in, right?
- 31:46SPEAKER_15: Because it was it was just uh keyboards at the beginning, right?
- 31:49SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 31:50SPEAKER_15: I think.
- 31:50SPEAKER_15: So when that first when the f when the full band first came in.
- 32:02SPEAKER_15: You want Luke's guitar right here.
- 32:05SPEAKER_17: Yeah.
- 32:08SPEAKER_17: Right.
- 32:12SPEAKER_15: Or here where the full band comes in.
- 32:16SPEAKER_17: I mean the drums even sound the drums sound fake.
- 32:20SPEAKER_17: Well, yeah, they are.
- 32:21SPEAKER_17: They're all fake.
- 32:22SPEAKER_17: That's what I'm saying, but I mean, you know, it would, you know, Toto wouldn't do program drums.
- 32:27SPEAKER_17: That's true.
- 32:27SPEAKER_17: They'd they'd have somebody playing the drums.
- 32:29SPEAKER_17: Yep.
- 32:30SPEAKER_15: So that's true.
- 32:31SPEAKER_15: I so I I um am not thrilled with uh the idea of AI lately.
- 32:40SPEAKER_17: Not not when it comes to music, man.
- 32:42SPEAKER_17: Yeah.
- 32:44SPEAKER_17: You know, there's just too much there's too many shenanigans going on with it.
- 32:48SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 32:48SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 32:49SPEAKER_15: I can see some of the benefits maybe.
- 32:51SPEAKER_15: Um but I th I think the the cons definitely outweigh the pros.
- 32:56SPEAKER_15: Oh yeah.
- 32:57SPEAKER_15: For sure.
- 32:57SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 32:58SPEAKER_15: For sure.
- 32:59SPEAKER_15: Anyway.
- 33:01SPEAKER_15: Uh do you have anything else?
- 33:02SPEAKER_15: Because I'm if not, I'm gonna I'm gonna go right straight.
- 33:05SPEAKER_17: I got I got nothing, man.
- 33:07SPEAKER_17: You got nothing?
- 33:08SPEAKER_17: I got nothing, man.
- 33:09SPEAKER_17: Okay.
- 33:10SPEAKER_17: Oh, G went!
- 33:13SPEAKER_16: Oh shoot.
- 33:14SPEAKER_17: Go ahead.
- 33:15SPEAKER_17: I can't hear anything.
- 33:17SPEAKER_17: I just hear an Eddie Van Hillen guitar in my ear.
- 33:20SPEAKER_17: I got it!
- 33:28SPEAKER_15: What's wrong?
- 33:29SPEAKER_15: I just have to look at the question because I don't have one, I don't have a song.
- 33:31SPEAKER_15: Oh, yes, I do.
- 33:33SPEAKER_15: Yes, I do, yes, I do.
- 33:33SPEAKER_17: I was gonna say, I thought you had that.
- 33:35SPEAKER_15: No, I do, I do.
- 33:36SPEAKER_15: It's a song that nobody knows, but that's okay.
- 33:38SPEAKER_15: Okay, that's fine.
- 33:41SPEAKER_15: Alright, so it's been two weeks.
- 33:44SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 33:45SPEAKER_15: Since the last mixtape.
- 33:46SPEAKER_15: So what was the last mixtape question?
- 33:49SPEAKER_15: Do you remember?
- 33:49SPEAKER_15: Was it the solo?
- 33:50SPEAKER_15: No, she already picked that one.
- 33:51SPEAKER_15: That was Pantera.
- 33:53SPEAKER_17: Yeah, this one was the uh switching from classical to rock a little bit.
- 33:58SPEAKER_17: That's right.
- 33:58SPEAKER_15: That's right.
- 33:59SPEAKER_15: And uh there was Johnny Be Good, there was uh Blackened, and mine was Ain't Talking about Love.
- 34:05SPEAKER_15: Right.
- 34:05SPEAKER_15: That's right.
- 34:06SPEAKER_15: Alright, go ahead.
- 34:06SPEAKER_17: So this is what our wonderful tunnel to judge said.
- 34:12SPEAKER_17: Ah, so this week was tough.
- 34:14SPEAKER_17: I loved all three songs.
- 34:15SPEAKER_17: I can definitely see how each song caused a transition from concert pianist to rock and roll.
- 34:22SPEAKER_17: Being a metalhead, Metallica and Van Halen are my usual go-tos.
- 34:26SPEAKER_17: However, Johnny B Good has the beautiful mix of rock with piano.
- 34:30SPEAKER_17: That's a smooth transition from concert pianist to rock and roll.
- 34:35SPEAKER_15: Cousin Larry's on a roll.
- 34:36SPEAKER_17: I tell you, man, that guy is just, you know.
- 34:38SPEAKER_17: That's what I said.
- 34:39SPEAKER_17: I'm glad we're not playing this for points or anything because he'd be kicking our butts every week.
- 34:43SPEAKER_17: Oh, for sure.
- 34:44SPEAKER_17: So, but yeah, that's what the judge said.
- 34:46SPEAKER_17: So Alright.
- 34:48SPEAKER_17: So this week is the country song.
- 34:52SPEAKER_15: If you had one country, if you were on a Desert Island country song.
- 34:56SPEAKER_17: If you had one country song that you have one country song to listen to while stranded on Desert Island, what would it be?
- 35:01SPEAKER_17: So this is what Cousin Larry said.
- 35:03SPEAKER_16: Alright.
- 35:07SPEAKER_17: Of course, you know, Cousin Larry's dad, Uncle Larry, uh-huh, was a big fan of the old old country.
- 35:13SPEAKER_17: Right, right.
- 35:13SPEAKER_17: You know, Hank Williams and stuff like that, so.
- 35:17SPEAKER_17: Uh see.
- 35:18SPEAKER_17: Wow, this is impossible.
- 35:19SPEAKER_17: There are too many great country artists and songs to choose from.
- 35:22SPEAKER_17: I tend to lean more towards older country music and artists like Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Marty Robbins, and Charlie Pride.
- 35:30SPEAKER_17: As my dad used to say, I wish I had Johnny Cash's Cash Johnny's Cash and Charlie's Pride.
- 35:34SPEAKER_16: Uh-huh.
- 35:36SPEAKER_17: But I like some of the more recent artists like Chris Stapleton and tons of the 90s and early 2000s artists.
- 35:42SPEAKER_17: I guess if it had to be just one song, though, it would be George Strait's classic Amarillo by Morning.
- 35:48SPEAKER_17: Oh.
- 35:48SPEAKER_17: Which I was like, man, I wish I'd picked that one up.
- 35:51SPEAKER_17: Honorable mention that Hank Williams, I'm so lonesome I could cry, and man of constant sorrow.
- 35:56SPEAKER_17: But from from one of my favorite movies, Oh Brother, where art thou?
- 36:00SPEAKER_17: They seem appropriate if I am a stranded on the desert island.
- 36:02SPEAKER_15: So this is so classic.
- 36:06SPEAKER_15: Ah it's great, man.
- 36:17SPEAKER_14: Up from San Antonio.
- 36:24SPEAKER_15: You know, I'm sorry, but you can't go wrong with George Straight.
- 36:28SPEAKER_15: No.
- 36:29SPEAKER_15: You cannot go wrong.
- 36:30SPEAKER_15: He's the king.
- 36:31SPEAKER_14: He's the king.
- 36:34SPEAKER_14: I'll be fucking it the cow.
- 36:37SPEAKER_15: Not to get off topic, but you saw that that uh meme I sent you about Alan Jackson.
- 36:43SPEAKER_15: Oh yeah.
- 36:44SPEAKER_15: Alan Jackson on the ACM Awards.
- 36:46SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 36:47SPEAKER_15: They wanted him to play like lip sync or something.
- 36:50SPEAKER_15: And so to get back at them, he made his drummer play with no sections on national television.
- 36:58SPEAKER_15: Stick it to the man.
- 37:00SPEAKER_17: Woo!
- 37:00SPEAKER_15: Fight the power!
- 37:02SPEAKER_17: Alright, what's yours?
- 37:03SPEAKER_17: Well, I had to go, you know, I had to go with the perfect country song.
- 37:07SPEAKER_16: Oh.
- 37:08SPEAKER_17: David Allan Coe.
- 37:09SPEAKER_16: Yep.
- 37:11SPEAKER_16: So now I couldn't help it, man.
- 37:14SPEAKER_17: I was like, if I'm gonna listen to one country song, it's gonna be that song.
- 37:17SPEAKER_15: I uh I I uh it was all that I could do to keep from crying.
- 37:29SPEAKER_03: Sometimes it seems so useless to reply, but you don't have to call me Darling Darlin.
- 37:48SPEAKER_03: You never even call me my name.
- 37:54SPEAKER_15: Alright, I'm gonna forward this to Yeah, because you gotta get to the good part of the last verse.
- 37:59SPEAKER_15: Yeah, hold on.
- 38:04unknown: Come on.
- 38:07SPEAKER_03: Darling.
- 38:10SPEAKER_03: You never thought about me, but told me it's not all anything.
- 38:19SPEAKER_02: Well a friend of mine named Steve Goodman wrote that song, and he told me it was the perfect country in Western song.
- 38:27SPEAKER_02: I wrote him back a letter and I told him it was not the perfect country in Western song because he hadn't said anything at all about mama, a train, a truck, a prison, or getting drunk.
- 38:45SPEAKER_02: Well he sat down and wrote another verse to the song and he sent it to me, and after reading it, I realized that my friend had written the perfect country and western song, and I felt obliged to include it on this album.
- 39:00SPEAKER_02: The last verse goes like this here.
- 39:46SPEAKER_17: That's it.
- 39:47SPEAKER_15: That's the one that makes me want to change my answer.
- 39:51SPEAKER_15: Because I I I picked something kind of what you just I'll give you a couple of guesses as to what what artist I picked.
- 40:56SPEAKER_15: Okay, so this is the one I went with, and this is I don't know, fairly sentimental.
- 41:01SPEAKER_15: I mean yours was funny and um because Larry's was great.
- 41:08SPEAKER_15: But I'm gonna stick with it.
- 41:10SPEAKER_15: This is a song nobody knows because um Vince Gill released this um it was uh it was four albums in one set.
- 41:22SPEAKER_15: Um it was like it was like four sides of Vince Gill.
- 41:25SPEAKER_15: He had a bluegrass uh CD, he had a rockin' CD, he had a country CD, and he had like a I don't know.
- 41:33SPEAKER_15: Jazz?
- 41:34SPEAKER_17: No, it wasn't really jazz, but I'd like to see Vince Gill did hip hop.
- 41:38SPEAKER_17: He probably could, actually.
- 41:39SPEAKER_17: I wouldn't doubt it.
- 41:40SPEAKER_15: Um but this song is on the uh acoustic one.
- 41:45SPEAKER_15: Um and it's called A River Like You.
- 41:47SPEAKER_15: And I just love the words.
- 41:50SPEAKER_15: And his daughter's singing with him.
- 41:52SPEAKER_15: And so if I had to listen to a country song over and over and over and over again on a on a desert island, it would be this one.
- 41:59SPEAKER_15: Alright.
- 41:59SPEAKER_15: Um there's a lot all kinds of imagery, you know, because the song is called A River Like You, so you'll you'll understand what I mean.
- 42:42SPEAKER_15: And get it.
- 42:43SPEAKER_19: Yeah, I got it there.
- 42:46SPEAKER_19: A reflection was on shallow key and river like you for like you.
- 43:40SPEAKER_15: So that's my choice.
- 43:42SPEAKER_17: I like it.
- 43:43SPEAKER_17: It's a good one.
- 43:44SPEAKER_17: Yeah.
- 43:45SPEAKER_15: But again, nobody knows that song.
- 43:47SPEAKER_15: Because it wasn't a single, it was it was on this four album release that is probably my favorite Vince Gill release.
- 43:55SPEAKER_15: Actually called These Days.
- 43:56SPEAKER_15: Good stuff.
- 43:57SPEAKER_15: Oh, all the time.
- 43:58SPEAKER_15: I thought it said three days.
- 43:59SPEAKER_15: No, these days.
- 44:00SPEAKER_15: Okay.
- 44:00SPEAKER_15: Um every album has just a bunch of great songs on it.
- 44:05SPEAKER_15: So it's so that's that's my choice.
- 44:07SPEAKER_15: A River Like You by Vince Gill.
- 44:09SPEAKER_15: No.
- 44:10SPEAKER_15: And yours uh was David Allen Cole.
- 44:13SPEAKER_15: Yeah, David Allen Cole, you never even called me by my name.
- 44:16SPEAKER_15: And Cousin Larry was Amarilla by Morning.
- 44:20SPEAKER_15: Amarilla by Morning by the King.
- 44:21SPEAKER_15: King.
- 44:22SPEAKER_15: George Strake.
- 44:24SPEAKER_15: Alright.
- 44:25SPEAKER_15: Why do you have a bunch of mixed up?
- 44:27SPEAKER_15: Well I was gonna tell you because um these I found over there.
- 44:33SPEAKER_15: Really?
- 44:34SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 44:34SPEAKER_15: So I don't know if we've we've done this, done these uh or not.
- 44:39SPEAKER_15: So I don't know.
- 44:42SPEAKER_15: But I found those currents.
- 44:43SPEAKER_15: I've never seen that one.
- 44:44SPEAKER_15: I found those currents.
- 44:45SPEAKER_15: So they must have fallen out or something.
- 44:47SPEAKER_15: I don't know.
- 44:47SPEAKER_17: That's weird.
- 44:48SPEAKER_17: Yeah.
- 44:48SPEAKER_17: Especially while they're all the way over there.
- 44:50SPEAKER_17: Right.
- 44:51SPEAKER_17: Such a weird place.
- 44:52SPEAKER_15: Okay, so Alright.
- 44:55SPEAKER_17: Uh so next week's question.
- 44:58SPEAKER_17: Oh yeah.
- 44:59SPEAKER_17: Future question.
- 45:00SPEAKER_15: Thank you for stopping me because I was about to send it to you.
- 45:02SPEAKER_15: I know.
- 45:03SPEAKER_17: I heard you with the piano.
- 45:04SPEAKER_17: I was like, oh better nip this in the butt.
- 45:07SPEAKER_17: Right, Eli?
- 45:08SPEAKER_17: Um That moment when time reading's hard.
- 45:18SPEAKER_17: Uh that moment when time still stands still because you saw quote the one and your heart leapt and you will never be the same.
- 45:28SPEAKER_17: Song.
- 45:30SPEAKER_15: Okay, well, say that again?
- 45:32SPEAKER_15: Yeah, I know.
- 45:37SPEAKER_15: Yeah, standing still.
- 45:38SPEAKER_17: When you saw the one.
- 45:39SPEAKER_17: The one.
- 45:40SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 45:40SPEAKER_15: Okay.
- 45:41SPEAKER_17: So that's a very confusing word.
- 45:44SPEAKER_17: It is a little bit.
- 45:46SPEAKER_17: We'll do the best we can.
- 45:48SPEAKER_17: Um, yeah.
- 45:49SPEAKER_17: Okay.
- 45:49SPEAKER_17: There you go.
- 45:50SPEAKER_17: I'll send it to cousin Larry.
- 45:52SPEAKER_17: So uh let him try to figure it out.
- 45:53SPEAKER_17: We're going to smash.
- 45:55SPEAKER_15: Take a break and we'll come back for climbing the wall of tunes and all that good stuff.
- 45:59SPEAKER_17: Oh yeah, I forgot about that.
- 46:00SPEAKER_17: Oh, you know, you get out of the you get out of the groove for a week and you're just like, how do we do this podcast thing again?
- 46:07SPEAKER_17: Right.
- 46:08SPEAKER_17: What do I do?
- 46:09SPEAKER_15: That's like riding a bike.
- 46:10SPEAKER_17: When do I take my pants off?
- 46:12SPEAKER_17: Who knows that?
- 46:16SPEAKER_17: I don't actually take my pants off.
- 46:18SPEAKER_17: Yes, I know.
- 46:19SPEAKER_17: Their pants stay on the whole podcast.
- 46:22SPEAKER_17: Thank the good Lord.
- 46:23SPEAKER_17: I know.
- 46:24SPEAKER_17: Nobody wants that.

- 48:21SPEAKER_17: Thank you very much.
- 48:21SPEAKER_17: That'll be on my next album.
- 48:23SPEAKER_15: Uh yeah, so let's start the music for uh climbing the wall of tunes.
- 48:28SPEAKER_17: Best music ever.
- 48:30SPEAKER_17: Alright.
- 48:31SPEAKER_17: I'm gonna read.
- 48:33SPEAKER_15: I'm gonna take my headphones off.
- 48:34SPEAKER_17: Okay, you do that.
- 48:35SPEAKER_17: I'm gonna read.
- 48:36SPEAKER_17: So this week's song from the Beatles is fixing a hole.
- 48:41SPEAKER_17: Sounds kind of dirty, but whatever.
- 48:44SPEAKER_17: Uh Paul was advised by his accountant to invest his earnings in more property.
- 48:51SPEAKER_17: Is this about the song or about McCartney's earnings?
- 48:56SPEAKER_17: Earnings, uh dump.
- 48:58SPEAKER_17: In June 1966, without having seen it, he bought a semi-derelict farmhouse called High Park near Campbellton.
- 49:07SPEAKER_17: Campbell I'm sorry, Campbell Town, on the west coast of Scotland, with 400 acres of grazing land around it.
- 49:13SPEAKER_17: That's pretty big.
- 49:15SPEAKER_17: The house hadn't been lived in for five years and was in poor condition from the regular battering battering of rain and sea winds.
- 49:23SPEAKER_17: The brown walls were dark with damp the only furniture consisted of potato boxes, and there was no bath.
- 49:30SPEAKER_17: When Paul eventually visited High Park with Jane Asher, he found it had provided a welcome release from the pressures of London.
- 49:37SPEAKER_17: The farm was too remote for even the keenest of fans to bother him, and few locals knew who owned it.
- 49:44SPEAKER_17: Fixing a hole was another Sgt.
- 49:46SPEAKER_17: Pepper song pounced on for its drug associations.
- 49:50SPEAKER_17: Okay, I didn't see that coming.
- 49:52SPEAKER_17: People just couldn't believe that Paul was talking about fixing holes in the DIY sense.
- 49:57SPEAKER_17: That was too simple.
- 49:58SPEAKER_17: They assumed he was talking about fixing a hole in his arm.
- 50:02SPEAKER_17: In other words, a heroin fix.
- 50:04SPEAKER_17: But the song really was about renovation and fixing a hole in the roof when the rain gets in.
- 50:10SPEAKER_17: Paul had recently performed this simple task in the most primitive of conditions at his new Scottish property, a job which had the effect of refocusing his thinking and making him reassess his immediate priorities.
- 50:23SPEAKER_17: This newfound practicality did not stop Paul from doing up his property in a quote, in a colorful way, as remembered by Alistair Taylor, Brian Epstein's assistant who accompanied Paul and Jane on their first visit to Hyde Park.
- 50:37SPEAKER_17: Quote, the brown paint made the farmhouse look like the inside of an arrow bar.
- 50:42SPEAKER_17: I think the candy bar would be My Life with the Beatles.
- 50:47SPEAKER_17: Paul decided he had enough of it, so he went into Campbelltown and bought lots of packets of colored pens.
- 50:54SPEAKER_17: The three of us spent the next few hours just doodling in these in all these colors, spreading them all over the wall and trying to relieve the gloom.
- 51:03unknown: Okay.
- 51:04SPEAKER_17: Okay.
- 51:04SPEAKER_17: I guess when you're a beetle, you can do whatever you want.
- 51:06SPEAKER_17: In 1967, in an interview with artist Alan Aldridge, Paul was probed on the drug associations.
- 51:13SPEAKER_17: Quote, if you're a junkie sitting in a room and fixing a hole, then that's what it will mean to you.
- 51:18SPEAKER_17: But when I wrote it, I meant that if there's a crack or the room is uncolorful, then I'll paint it.
- 51:24SPEAKER_17: Unquote.
- 51:25SPEAKER_15: So people want to believe what they want to do.
- 51:28SPEAKER_15: Exactly.
- 51:28SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 51:32SPEAKER_17: It's a weird, it's a quirking song.
- 51:34SPEAKER_17: Oh yeah.
- 51:50SPEAKER_13: Where it will go.
- 51:54SPEAKER_13: Where it will go.
- 51:57SPEAKER_17: Fixing a hoe.
- 51:59SPEAKER_17: Fixing a hoe where the rain gets in.
- 52:01SPEAKER_17: Right.
- 52:01SPEAKER_17: Of course it's not the, you know, um fixing metaphor they've used in the song.
- 52:07SPEAKER_17: This is true.
- 52:08SPEAKER_17: Like, you know, in a day in the life where they're talking about filling in the holes from the road between wherever and wherever.
- 52:16SPEAKER_17: Got it.
- 52:17SPEAKER_17: The Beatles, musicians, and handymen.
- 52:20SPEAKER_17: I um I have an album.
- 52:22SPEAKER_17: I don't care.
- 52:27SPEAKER_15: Good to be back, everybody.
- 52:29SPEAKER_15: We'll see you next week.
- 52:30SPEAKER_17: I don't want to think about stuff.
- 52:32SPEAKER_17: It hurts my brain.
- 52:35SPEAKER_17: It puts my brain in a bad place.
- 52:38SPEAKER_15: Let the guessing begin.
- 52:48SPEAKER_15: Is it a band?
- 52:49SPEAKER_15: No.
- 52:49SPEAKER_17: Well.
- 52:52SPEAKER_15: We you won't get it as a band, so no.
- 52:58SPEAKER_17: Guy, girl.
- 53:03SPEAKER_15: No.
- 53:03SPEAKER_15: It's uh this particular album is so-and-so and the so-and-so.
- 53:07SPEAKER_17: Oh, is it John Hyatt?
- 53:12SPEAKER_17: John Hyatt and the Gonner?
- 53:13SPEAKER_12: Yes.
- 53:14SPEAKER_17: How did you know that?
- 53:15SPEAKER_17: I don't know.
- 53:16SPEAKER_17: Probably because we listened to a lot of John Hyatt over the weekend.
- 53:19SPEAKER_17: We did, yeah.
- 53:20SPEAKER_17: On our playlist.
- 53:22SPEAKER_15: On our playlist.
- 53:23SPEAKER_15: So have we done it on the Road Trip playlist?
- 53:25SPEAKER_17: Have we done this album?
- 53:26SPEAKER_17: I don't think so.
- 53:27SPEAKER_15: That's a great album.
- 53:28SPEAKER_15: It is a great album.
- 53:30SPEAKER_15: So a little bit of history.
- 53:33SPEAKER_15: John Hyatt has uh number one, we're huge John Hyatt fans.
- 53:39SPEAKER_15: And John Hyatt has a trilogy of albums that are considered his sober comeback albums.
- 53:50SPEAKER_15: Not that they ever went anywhere, but he did get sober.
- 53:54SPEAKER_15: And it started in, I think, eighty-seven with the album Bring the Family, which had Rai Cooter on guitar, Nick Lowe on drums, and Jim Keltner.
- 54:03SPEAKER_15: Oh screen, sorry, sorry.
- 54:05SPEAKER_15: Excuse me.
- 54:05SPEAKER_15: Uh Nick Lowe on bass, Jim Keltner on drums.
- 54:08SPEAKER_15: Um and that was his the Bring the Family album.
- 54:12SPEAKER_15: And then the s the the the s the album the second in the trilogy is um holy cow.
- 54:21SPEAKER_15: What's the name of the album?
- 54:22SPEAKER_15: Slow turning.
- 54:24SPEAKER_15: Which is the first time we see The Goners, which has um um Sonny Landreth on guitar.
- 54:32SPEAKER_15: Um and holy cow, I can't think of the rhythm section.
- 54:37SPEAKER_15: Anyway, they call themselves the Goners.
- 54:39SPEAKER_15: Correct.
- 54:40SPEAKER_15: And then the third album in that trilogy is called Stolen Moments, and that doesn't have any of those guys on it.
- 54:48SPEAKER_15: So he went he went from um essentially Little Village, which was the Ry Cooter Nicolo, that band, to the Goners, then to uh uh studio musicians, and then in uh the the album after that was Little Village again.
- 55:05SPEAKER_15: And then he did a bunch of solo stuff, you know, solo stuff that didn't have a a particular band, the Guilty Dogs, right, you know scary, right?
- 55:13SPEAKER_15: We We haven't done John Hyatt.
- 55:15SPEAKER_15: We have to have done John Hyatt.
- 55:16SPEAKER_17: That's what I'm saying, but I don't see him anywhere on the list.
- 55:20SPEAKER_17: How's that even possible?
- 55:21SPEAKER_15: I don't know.
- 55:22SPEAKER_15: Uh so in 2003 he reunited the Goners for the first time.
- 55:29SPEAKER_15: Um and put out this album called Beneath This Gruff Exterior.
- 55:36SPEAKER_15: Which is awesome.
- 55:37SPEAKER_17: Which is a great name.
- 55:38SPEAKER_15: Awesome.
- 55:38SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 55:39SPEAKER_15: He had a a knack for naming not only bands but albums too.
- 55:42SPEAKER_15: Oh yeah.
- 55:43SPEAKER_15: Um yeah.
- 55:45SPEAKER_15: So I say had like he's like he's not around anymore, but he is.
- 55:49SPEAKER_15: Um by the way, he is going on tour next year.
- 55:53SPEAKER_15: Because he's been laid up this year because of uh fall that he took.
- 55:57SPEAKER_15: Did you know that?
- 55:58SPEAKER_17: Another one?
- 55:59SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 56:02SPEAKER_15: I know.
- 56:02SPEAKER_17: Um last year, he'd just gotten over a fall too.
- 56:07SPEAKER_15: Well, I think it was a fall.
- 56:08SPEAKER_15: Maybe it was something else.
- 56:10SPEAKER_15: But he's been laying low uh the rest of this year.
- 56:13SPEAKER_17: Am I reading this right?
- 56:14SPEAKER_17: We've never done John Hyatt.
- 56:16SPEAKER_15: We can't that can't be true.
- 56:17SPEAKER_17: That can't be true.
- 56:18SPEAKER_17: But I don't see his name.
- 56:20SPEAKER_15: I will dedicate a whole episode to John Hyatt.
- 56:22SPEAKER_17: Yeah, man.
- 56:24SPEAKER_15: What's your first Hyatt what's your favorite Hyatt album?
- 56:27SPEAKER_17: Any album?
- 56:28SPEAKER_15: Do you have a favorite?
- 56:29SPEAKER_15: No.
- 56:29SPEAKER_15: No, no.
- 56:32SPEAKER_17: But if it if I had to pick a favorite, it'd probably be this one.
- 56:35SPEAKER_15: Oh really?
- 56:36SPEAKER_17: Yeah.
- 56:36SPEAKER_17: Okay.
- 56:36SPEAKER_17: Because I I just like this one so much.
- 56:38SPEAKER_15: Yeah, no, I love it.
- 56:39SPEAKER_17: There's so many good songs on it, I'm just like, yeah, baby, it's John Hyatt.
- 56:44SPEAKER_15: Okay, so I'm just gonna play a few of these tracks.
- 56:47SPEAKER_17: I just I can't believe we'd never put John Hyatt on here.
- 56:51SPEAKER_17: We talk about him all the time.
- 56:52SPEAKER_17: I know, maybe we've just never done it.
- 56:55SPEAKER_04: Is that possible?
- 57:42SPEAKER_15: How bad's the coffee?
- 58:52SPEAKER_15: Just so so such unique lyrics.
- 58:55SPEAKER_15: You cut my bit you cut my bitter with your sweet talk.
- 58:58SPEAKER_17: Yeah, just you know, the guy is a wordsmith.
- 59:01SPEAKER_17: Oh man.
- 59:02SPEAKER_15: But it's and it's but it's not like anybody else.
- 59:05SPEAKER_15: Right.
- 59:06SPEAKER_15: Nobody writes songs like like he does.
- 59:08SPEAKER_15: I mean, it's um and he has been um pretty open in public about dealing with depression.
- 59:14SPEAKER_15: Right.
- 59:14SPEAKER_15: Um he's got a a long line of uh I mean I think his one of his wives committed suicide.
- 59:21SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 59:21SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 59:22SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 59:22SPEAKER_15: Uh this is a song called The Nagging Dark, which is you know, once you have depression and you're dealing with it, it doesn't always just go away.
- 59:31SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 59:31SPEAKER_15: Um and that's what that's what this song's about.
- 59:33SPEAKER_15: But it's great.
- 59:34SPEAKER_08: Just the way he puts it is how fast you're gonna run.
- 1:00:39SPEAKER_15: That's the rhythm section for the goners.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_15: Gotcha.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_15: I forgot their names.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_15: Oh, gotcha.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_15: Now I got and then the um I'm gonna play Thank goodness for liner notes.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_15: Yeah, right?
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_15: Which you don't get with digital downloads.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_17: I know, man.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_17: You gotta learn about a whip.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_17: This may be my favorite song in the whole album, my baby blue.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_17: Yep, yep.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_15: Is there one on there that you want to because there's only one more that I want to play?
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_15: Um is there is there any on there that Well, I like the last song most united.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_15: That's the one I was gonna play.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_15: So I want to read some lyrics before I it's it's it's a brilliant song.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_15: It's it's unbelievably brilliant.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_15: First cut by Willie Nelson, actually.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_17: Um but I I I just wanted to mention that I like this this liner picture of them just sitting at a table with an old-fashioned steel coffee pot amongst them.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_17: Except they there's oh, I guess there is a cup there.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_17: But I was like, there's no cups.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_17: What's going on?
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_15: Yeah, no, it's the whole package was put together really well.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_15: Um so the most unoriginal sin, again, originally cut by Willie Nelson.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_15: Um, this is the first time Hyatt has recorded it.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_15: Um and just just when I talk about um unique lyrics or just an original take, um, this is what I mean.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_15: So this is how it goes.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_15: I'm gonna- and I'm gonna play it here in a second.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_15: Uh what there was left of us was all covered in dust and thick skin.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_15: A half-eaten apple, the whole Sistine chapel, painted on the head of a pin.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_15: A lifelong love's work gone up in a smirk, and you didn't even see her waltz in.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_15: Now this love is a ghost for having played host to the most unoriginal sin.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_15: Infidelity.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_16: Right, right.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_15: Um at the wedding we smiled while some devil played w wild violin.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_15: Soon after the chapel, she offered me that apple, one bite, and I was gone with the wind, and you needed no proof because the whole naked truth was wearing only an infidel's grin.
- 1:03:27SPEAKER_15: And I'm not I'm not gonna read the rest, I just won't play it because this is this is awesome.
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_15: Uh the most unoriginal sin, John Hyatt.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_08: Was I done fixed?
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_15: Okay, so I'm not gonna play the whole song, but I will read it.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_15: Um Wearing Infidel's grin.
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_15: Chorus number two, and a proud schoolboy's boast for having left his post for the most unoriginal sin.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_15: Now the jukebox is humming, all the venial shortcomings of men.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_15: But I found me this drink that can finally sink all this guilt I've been wallowing in.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_15: Buddy, once you get started, once true love's departed, you do it over and over again.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_15: So tonight I will toast just whoever comes close to the most unoriginal sin.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_15: Just pure poetry.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_17: Yeah.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_17: Uh fantastic song.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_15: Uh fantastic song.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_17: And I've heard the Willie Nelson version too, and I I like Hyatt's version better.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_17: Of course.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_17: But I'm I'm also biased.
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_15: So uh oh, you put it right here.
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_15: So that's the album of the week is John Hyde and the Goners Beneath this gruff exterior.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_15: And you still have not found any John Hyatt in your book?
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_17: I did not.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_17: I went through it three or four times and he's not in there.
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_15: So that just means we have to dedicate like Well, I think that's what we've done.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_17: We've just like we've taken a t episode and listened to John Hyatt, so we just didn't we did do that?
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_17: We must have.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_17: I know we I know we've talked about John Hyatt ad nauseum on this podcast.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_17: It should be like O'Brien and Doug and John Hyatt podcast, you know what I mean?
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_15: Right.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_15: So 'cause I could I could talk about John Hyatt forever.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_15: I know.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_17: It's easy, man.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_15: My favorite actually, and I'm in a um I'm in a John Hyatt group on Facebook.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_15: Um I'm in a John Hyatt group on Facebook and and you know every once in a while they'll put up a question out there what is your favorite um John Hyatt cover?
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_15: You know, somebody else covered John Hyatt.
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_15: She she she Bonnie Ray did a thing called Love and it was huge for her kind of kind of put her on the map, back on the map, I should say.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_15: You know, she she had gone away for a while and and and then she I think she won a bunch of Grammys for that album.
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 1:06:55SPEAKER_15: Um but there's a song that John Hyatt did.
- 1:07:01SPEAKER_15: I can't remember what album it's on.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_15: It's on one of his earlier albums, Before Bring the Family.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_15: But Bonnie Raid covered this one on her fundamental CD.
- 1:07:09SPEAKER_15: Have you ever heard Lovers Will?
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_15: Again, pure poetry.
- 1:07:14SPEAKER_15: Um So this is a John Hyatt song by Bonnie Raid.
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_00: Who take the only hearts they got and throw them into the fire?
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_00: Who risk their own self-respect in the name of desire?
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_00: Who regret everything they've done, and who get the big lovers will?
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_00: Who'll hurt each other all the time and never give it a thought?
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_00: Who lie about where they've been and hope they never get caught?
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_00: Who say each other's kisses?
- 1:08:55SPEAKER_15: If love is a healer, who will be the first ones ill?
- 1:08:59SPEAKER_15: Lovers will.
- 1:09:00SPEAKER_15: That's brilliant.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_15: Um and this is one of the very rare times.
- 1:09:06SPEAKER_15: See, if John Hyatt had redone it, it was on Writing with the King, that album Writing with the King.
- 1:09:10SPEAKER_15: Oh, yeah.
- 1:09:10SPEAKER_15: If John Hyatt had done it like that, I would like his version better.
- 1:09:15SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 1:09:15SPEAKER_15: Uh, but he didn't.
- 1:09:17SPEAKER_15: And again, this was back in his I'm not gonna say new wave era, but this was his version of Love or King.
- 1:09:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'm gonna do it.
- 1:09:41SPEAKER_17: Well, it's not it's not the John I we've got the Don Right.
- 1:10:06SPEAKER_15: Eighty three.
- 1:10:08SPEAKER_17: Yeah, okay, so mid eight.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_15: Early eighties, yeah.
- 1:10:12SPEAKER_15: Again, not bad.
- 1:10:13SPEAKER_15: I like I mean, I like this.
- 1:10:15SPEAKER_17: Yeah, it it's okay, but it's not right.
- 1:10:18SPEAKER_17: You know, the way you look you're right, the way that Bonnie Raid did it is way better.
- 1:10:21SPEAKER_17: Now if he it fits it more.
- 1:10:23SPEAKER_15: If he had done it that way.
- 1:10:24SPEAKER_15: Oh yeah, I would.
- 1:10:25SPEAKER_15: And maybe he will at some point, but um I think I would like his version better than Bonnie's, and I love Bonnie.
- 1:10:31SPEAKER_15: Yeah, you know, but yeah.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_15: Anyway, that's one of my favorite covers by uh by someone of John Hyatt.
- 1:10:38SPEAKER_15: Bonnie Raid's Lover's Wheel.
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_15: All right, that is episode 252.
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_15: Is that what we said?
- 1:10:43SPEAKER_15: 252?
- 1:10:43SPEAKER_15: Did I say that?
- 1:10:44SPEAKER_17: Sure.
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_17: Yeah.
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_17: I'm not entirely possibly smart about it.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_17: 252.
- 1:10:52SPEAKER_16: I lost my train of thought.
- 1:10:54SPEAKER_17: I'm not entirely not entirely smart about it.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_17: Talking's hard.
- 1:11:00SPEAKER_17: I can't do it.
- 1:11:02SPEAKER_15: All right.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_17: No.
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_15: Uh until next time, and there will be a next time.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_17: Yeah, we'll be back next week.
- 1:11:08SPEAKER_17: We'll be back next week.
- 1:11:08SPEAKER_17: Because we got nothing else to do.
- 1:11:10SPEAKER_17: Right.
- 1:11:11SPEAKER_17: We're not going anywhere, and Bob's not having any more art shows.
- 1:11:14SPEAKER_17: Art shows.
- 1:11:15SPEAKER_17: Well, I think he is just not next week.
- 1:11:16SPEAKER_17: Yeah.
- 1:11:18SPEAKER_17: Eventually.
- 1:11:18SPEAKER_17: Yeah, eventually.
- 1:11:19SPEAKER_17: Did you ever get that thing set up for him?
- 1:11:21SPEAKER_15: No, he didn't he didn't reach out to me the next day.
- 1:11:23SPEAKER_15: Oh, okay.
- 1:11:24SPEAKER_15: Yeah, I'll we'll take care of it.
- 1:11:25SPEAKER_17: We'll get it, you know, because he's I was fascinated following along, but it had nothing to do with me.
- 1:11:30SPEAKER_15: So did you like my comments?
- 1:11:32SPEAKER_15: Yeah, I was like, I said maybe we should kind of take this conversation somewhere else so we don't blow up Doug's phone.
- 1:11:37SPEAKER_17: It was like, oh yeah, that's a good feeling.
- 1:11:39SPEAKER_17: It was like, yeah, all right, I see where it's going with this.
- 1:11:41SPEAKER_17: All right, cool.
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_17: You know.
- 1:11:43SPEAKER_17: I mean, I mean I had nothing to contribute to it.
- 1:11:45SPEAKER_17: So I was like, I don't know what's going on.
- 1:11:47SPEAKER_15: We're trying to get a website done for Bob.
- 1:11:48SPEAKER_15: So that's he can sell stuff.
- 1:11:50SPEAKER_15: He can sell stuff.
- 1:11:51SPEAKER_15: Make money.
- 1:11:52SPEAKER_15: And everybody will have a chance to look at his stuff.
- 1:11:53SPEAKER_15: So that's that's good.
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_15: Exactly.
- 1:11:55SPEAKER_15: Yeah.
- 1:11:55SPEAKER_15: Uh all right.
- 1:11:57SPEAKER_15: So until next week, I'm O'Brien.
- 1:11:59SPEAKER_17: I'm Eli.
- 1:12:00SPEAKER_17: Again, just just temporarily.
- 1:12:02SPEAKER_17: Next week I'll be Doug again.
- 1:12:04SPEAKER_16: Unless I find his unless I find his name tag on the lawn again.
- 1:12:09SPEAKER_15: He'll hear about it when it gets home.
- 1:12:11SPEAKER_18: There we go.
- 1:12:11SPEAKER_16: All right, bye everybody.
- 1:12:13SPEAKER_16: Bye-bye.
