- 0:26Speaker 3: Oh, that's it, No open nothing. I figured after the
- 0:30Speaker 3: draft you'd have this big montage.
- 0:32Speaker 4: You and I did it.
- 0:33Speaker 3: I just oh, okay, all right, Well, welcome to Patriots Unfiltered.
- 0:38Speaker 3: It is Tuesday after the draft here at Jillette Stadium.
- 0:43Speaker 3: It's duced Tamara, Evan Paul, myself, Matt Nabooth and uh.
- 0:49Speaker 3: I think overall, everybody's pretty pleased with the hall. Thanks
- 0:54Speaker 3: for the weekend.
- 0:55Speaker 5: I think so seems like it. I mean, uh, you know,
- 0:57Speaker 5: definitely some questions about I think still remain along that
- 1:00Speaker 5: the offensive line. But you said you had to weaponize
- 1:02Speaker 5: the offense and get rookies, and you know, it feels
- 1:05Speaker 5: like they pretty much hit most of their needs. I mean,
- 1:08Speaker 5: probably a couple of position groups that maybe just a
- 1:10Speaker 5: little bit surprised that they didn't spend a Day three
- 1:12Speaker 5: draft pick on, which isn't all that big of a deal.
- 1:14Speaker 5: But I would say I'm excited. It's just I think
- 1:16Speaker 5: the questions about left tackle kind of continue.
- 1:18Speaker 3: It's still in terms of quality and depth. But when's
- 1:21Speaker 3: the last time we went into a draft saying, here
- 1:23Speaker 3: are the top three needs bing bing bing and that's
- 1:26Speaker 3: the things that they exactly did.
- 1:27Speaker 5: Yeah, and I think we said too, like, they're not
- 1:29Speaker 5: gonna be able to hit all three perfectly, you know,
- 1:31Speaker 5: and I don't And I really I think they hit
- 1:33Speaker 5: one perfectly. And you know, the receivers, I really like
- 1:36Speaker 5: the receivers, but you know, I think that there is
- 1:38Speaker 5: you know, some discussion to be had about they tried
- 1:40Speaker 5: to trade back up, so clearly they wanted to, you know,
- 1:43Speaker 5: maybe get somebody that was a little bit higher on
- 1:45Speaker 5: their board than the guys they ended up with. I
- 1:47Speaker 5: say that as I liked those guys. And then you know,
- 1:49Speaker 5: the tackle, I think is the biggest question there the
- 1:51Speaker 5: third pick, which you know, Ken that kid moved to
- 1:54Speaker 5: the left side. That's the question we already had with
- 1:56Speaker 5: with some of the guys that already exist on the roster.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Yeah, there was definitely something going on at the end
- 1:59Speaker 3: of the first round with the Bills, and I think
- 2:05Speaker 3: on somebody that we wanted there in terms of a receiver.
- 2:08Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, that's that seems like the case. But but
- 2:10Speaker 5: overall reactions seems you know pretty good. Just needed offense,
- 2:14Speaker 5: took offense, and uh yeah, I'm excited to see these
- 2:17Speaker 5: guys get out here in those few days.
- 2:18Speaker 6: Week, not if you not if you listened to Paul's
- 2:21Speaker 6: shows yesterday, which I did because I had to hear
- 2:24Speaker 6: what the you know, Burnan Ernie had to say about
- 2:27Speaker 6: the draft, and uh, I think the biggest thing that
- 2:29Speaker 6: they said was probably the one critique I hear the
- 2:32Speaker 6: most from people. So it's I guess fair is just
- 2:35Speaker 6: you know, did they miss runs at receiver and tackle?
- 2:39Speaker 6: And like how they how they played the board, not
- 2:42Speaker 6: necessarily the players that they got, but you know how
- 2:46Speaker 6: they played the game, you know, of the draft board.
- 2:49Speaker 6: At receiver, you mentioned that it sounds like they tried
- 2:52Speaker 6: to trade back up in the first round, like most
- 2:54Speaker 6: people think Xavier Laguet was the guy that they wanted.
- 2:57Speaker 6: You know, they end up in a run of six
- 2:59Speaker 6: receivers and they get the sixth guy, you know, tackle
- 3:02Speaker 6: seemed like Caden Wallace. Maybe they missed out on the
- 3:06Speaker 6: Patrick Paul's and the Kingsley Sue Mattias. But I think
- 3:10Speaker 6: at the end of the day, like we've seen, it
- 3:13Speaker 6: doesn't always go that the top guy taken, or you know,
- 3:16Speaker 6: the way that the run unfolds you, that they could
- 3:18Speaker 6: end up being right in the long run, that Jalen
- 3:20Speaker 6: Polk is a better player than lad mcconncor.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Or they could end up being lucky, you know, like
- 3:24Speaker 3: the other way you want to put it. Yeah, because
- 3:26Speaker 3: like if you were trying to move up, obviously there
- 3:28Speaker 3: was somebody who were targeting, but it might turn out
- 3:30Speaker 3: that the guy you were targeting isn't as good as
- 3:32Speaker 3: the guy you ended up with. Yeah, you know, yep, so,
- 3:35Speaker 3: But I think in terms of the positions, I think,
- 3:39Speaker 3: you know, it was pretty good. I'm intrigued by the
- 3:42Speaker 3: second wide receiver Baker. He's got a little dog in him,
- 3:46Speaker 3: you know, like I think he might have some competing
- 3:49Speaker 3: in here.
- 3:49Speaker 7: And I feel like you need that in the receiver
- 3:52Speaker 7: and corner position. You need those guys who are confident
- 3:55Speaker 7: in themselves and according to him, grab your popcorn, have
- 3:58Speaker 7: it ready to go when you get to chill.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, now out there, you know, reality's gonna
- 4:03Speaker 3: hit him in the face when he gets here. Yeah,
- 4:06Speaker 3: but what's the stacy James. Yeah, like Parcels said, if
- 4:10Speaker 3: they don't bite when they're puppies, they won't bite when
- 4:12Speaker 3: their dogs.
- 4:12Speaker 5: So yeah, that's gonna happened. Boom er bust. It feels
- 4:15Speaker 5: like with him. But it's funny though, because some of
- 4:16Speaker 5: the people who are critiquing the draft and are like, well,
- 4:18Speaker 5: I think the fourth round receiver is the best pick,
- 4:20Speaker 5: And I'm like, well, how does that make sense? Like yeah,
- 4:22Speaker 5: you know, like that's like because you think in your
- 4:25Speaker 5: mind of whatever you've done, that this guy might go off,
- 4:28Speaker 5: Like I don't know, it just feels it feels oh yeah, silly,
- 4:31Speaker 5: Like you know, they obviously like Polk was a better
- 4:33Speaker 5: player and they took him higher for a reason. But
- 4:36Speaker 5: and I also just didn't like the sixth best receiver.
- 4:38Speaker 5: That's an easy way to put it. But did you
- 4:41Speaker 5: really want lab? I mean I would have taken Jalen
- 4:43Speaker 5: Polk over, Like I don't know. Sometimes I think you
- 4:45Speaker 5: get to that point and it's kind of an eye
- 4:46Speaker 5: of the beholder. So yeah, you can say he was
- 4:48Speaker 5: the sixth receiver taken, but does that necessarily mean he
- 4:51Speaker 5: was their sixth receiver.
- 4:52Speaker 6: I don't know, And I think the big thing about
- 4:54Speaker 6: it is, and we were talking about this on Catch
- 4:56Speaker 6: twenty two. I had all these guys in the same
- 4:59Speaker 6: tier received Ladd McConkie, Royman Wilson, Troy Franklin, Jalen McMillan,
- 5:04Speaker 6: the other Washington receiver. They were all in the same
- 5:07Speaker 6: tier for me, and I think at the end of
- 5:09Speaker 6: the day, you take the guy that stylistically plays the
- 5:12Speaker 6: way that you want to play, and that's that's the separator, right,
- 5:16Speaker 6: It's not necessarily Yeah, I had a slightly higher grade
- 5:20Speaker 6: on Ladd McConkie than I did on Jalen Polk, But
- 5:23Speaker 6: maybe they want a guy that's a little bit bigger,
- 5:24Speaker 6: a little bit stronger, you know, one hundred and eighty
- 5:27Speaker 6: six pound receiver in McConkie versus a two hundred and
- 5:29Speaker 6: five pound receiver in Polk. So that skill set tip
- 5:33Speaker 6: the scales towards Jalen Polk for them, and that's different.
- 5:36Speaker 3: There was an email that came across that you guys
- 5:39Speaker 3: addressed in Catch twenty two towards the end, which I'm
- 5:43Speaker 3: going to push back on you a little bit, Evan,
- 5:45Speaker 3: where Elliott Wolfe said, you know where I come from,
- 5:49Speaker 3: it's not so much XYZ, it's are they good? Are
- 5:53Speaker 3: they good receivers? You know? And I think that's refreshing.
- 5:57Speaker 3: I know the email that's sent it in said we
- 5:59Speaker 3: should we be worried about that? I say no, I
- 6:03Speaker 3: mean can the guy? Can the guy separate? Can he
- 6:06Speaker 3: catch it when you throw it to him?
- 6:08Speaker 5: You know, like the second part for sure with these guys.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, so that's more important than is he
- 6:13Speaker 3: is he you know frame? Or is he Z one?
- 6:16Speaker 5: Two three? Here we go again.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Can we get a bunch of guys that can get
- 6:20Speaker 3: separation and catch the ball?
- 6:21Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 6:22Speaker 6: I just think that you always say to watch what
- 6:25Speaker 6: they do and not what they say. And when I
- 6:27Speaker 6: look at these two guys, I think they're extremely complimentary players.
- 6:31Speaker 6: I think Javon Baker is an outside receiver. If you
- 6:35Speaker 6: don't want to put X on him because we don't
- 6:37Speaker 6: like the letters, that's fine. But Javon Baker is an
- 6:40Speaker 6: outside receiver. Jalen Polk is an inside outside receiver. Can
- 6:44Speaker 6: do a little bit of both, and so I think
- 6:46Speaker 6: these two guys are very complimentary. And they're also very
- 6:49Speaker 6: complimentary to Drake may like their their skills overlap with
- 6:53Speaker 6: what he does well. So I think in a lot
- 6:55Speaker 6: of ways, Elliott says that, oh, we don't necessarily prioritize
- 6:59Speaker 6: positions and things like that. Well, you drafted a down
- 7:02Speaker 6: the field outside receiver and you drafted a Z receiver
- 7:06Speaker 6: that moves inside and out. So by your actions, it
- 7:09Speaker 6: looks like you said, we're gonna get two guys that
- 7:12Speaker 6: are at least a little bit different here so that
- 7:14Speaker 6: they're not stepping on each other's toes. That's just the
- 7:17Speaker 6: way that I look at it. I think that people
- 7:19Speaker 6: are more excited about Javon Baker because he's flash here.
- 7:22Speaker 6: There's no doubt about it that Javon Baker's highlights are
- 7:25Speaker 6: better than Jalen Polk's highlights. So if you're into that flash,
- 7:28Speaker 6: and I'm not saying that that's necessarily wrong, but you're
- 7:32Speaker 6: gonna look at Javon Baker as a more flashy big play.
- 7:36Speaker 6: I mean, had averaged like twenty two yards per catch
- 7:39Speaker 6: last year in the Big twelve, so you know he's
- 7:41Speaker 6: one of those guys that plays that way, whereas Jalen
- 7:44Speaker 6: Polk is gonna be the steady, chain moving possession receiver
- 7:47Speaker 6: that might not have as much flash to him but
- 7:49Speaker 6: might be more consistent.
- 7:51Speaker 7: Was Javon Baker the number one guy at UCF.
- 7:54Speaker 6: Yes, yeah, I mean he led to the Big twelve
- 7:57Speaker 6: in receiving last year, just the entire conference. And is
- 8:01Speaker 6: it a big play machine. I mean the only two
- 8:03Speaker 6: guys that had more twenty plus yard catches than Javon
- 8:06Speaker 6: Baker Dunesay and Neighbors and the whole FBS. So this
- 8:11Speaker 6: is a this is a big play guy. You know,
- 8:14Speaker 6: that's what he does.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Does anyone hold against him transferring out of Alabama?
- 8:18Speaker 8: I mean they're all transferred now, yeah.
- 8:21Speaker 3: I mean maybe they're going for like the elite of
- 8:23Speaker 3: the elite to a lower, you know level school.
- 8:27Speaker 8: I mean it's Big twelve now, Like it's to me
- 8:30Speaker 8: there was a time that I would have but not anymore.
- 8:33Speaker 8: Like everybody transfers now.
- 8:34Speaker 3: And it's hard to I'm just throwing it out there,
- 8:36Speaker 3: and it's hard.
- 8:37Speaker 7: To at Alabama when you have so many five star guys.
- 8:41Speaker 7: It's like, how are you gonna get playing time?
- 8:42Speaker 3: Right? So you know something, you know, it could be good,
- 8:45Speaker 3: Like the Andy Harts of the world would be like
- 8:47Speaker 3: just fight it out better.
- 8:50Speaker 8: The fairness, Like there's probably a time, you know, eight
- 8:52Speaker 8: or ten years ago that I would have been like that,
- 8:54Speaker 8: like you know, compete, yeah, you know, like he's something
- 8:57Speaker 8: admirable about what Matt Castle did at USC, you know,
- 9:01Speaker 8: which is nothing, no complete and try to win the job.
- 9:05Speaker 8: Don't take your ball and go home and it just
- 9:07Speaker 8: goes somewhere else. Now, you can make an argument that
- 9:10Speaker 8: had he gone somewhere else, maybe he would have been
- 9:12Speaker 8: drafted higher, but that didn't prevent him from having an
- 9:15Speaker 8: NFL career.
- 9:15Speaker 7: So I mean, what what would have happened to for example,
- 9:21Speaker 7: let's just say Jalen if he didn't transfer from Oklahoma
- 9:26Speaker 7: to Alabama, what happened to him?
- 9:30Speaker 5: I don't know, Jalen.
- 9:33Speaker 7: Sorry, I'm like my brain is like blinking right now.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Yes, okay, he went from Alabama, toy.
- 9:40Speaker 7: So imagine you would have stayed there and competed with Tua. Like,
- 9:43Speaker 7: would he be where he is right now if he
- 9:45Speaker 7: would have just stayed there as the backup behind too?
- 9:47Speaker 8: I would say he probably would be, because he was
- 9:49Speaker 8: already the starter before that. Now, if he had never
- 9:52Speaker 8: played in Alabama, that's different, you think, now, yeah, he
- 9:57Speaker 8: never player or the same draft pick. He probably wouldn't
- 10:00Speaker 8: have gotten drafted in the second round. Yeah, I think
- 10:02Speaker 8: that the performance at Oklahoma probably got him second round status.
- 10:06Speaker 8: He'd be the same player.
- 10:08Speaker 6: I think a lot to do with his development.
- 10:11Speaker 8: I think I have no way of knowing that for sure.
- 10:15Speaker 8: You guys might be right on.
- 10:16Speaker 7: No, I'm just saying, like if he stayed there behind
- 10:18Speaker 7: Tua and never saw the field again.
- 10:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I listen, I think putting, but he would have
- 10:23Speaker 3: I think. I think giving these guys control of their future.
- 10:28Speaker 3: I think it's a good thing. You know. I I
- 10:30Speaker 3: would have been one of those guys, you know, had
- 10:33Speaker 3: I had any ability. Uh, And I got into a
- 10:35Speaker 3: sport and you know I wasn't seeing as much playing time,
- 10:39Speaker 3: if at all, I'd want to leave and go. I'm
- 10:42Speaker 3: not out here to watch. I want to.
- 10:44Speaker 5: Play so much easier now too, with the way things are.
- 10:48Speaker 5: I mean, used to what you have to sit out
- 10:49Speaker 5: a year, you'd have to apply. Yeah, you know, it's
- 10:51Speaker 5: a whole process, and now it's just like I'm going
- 10:53Speaker 5: to the portal.
- 10:53Speaker 6: I mean, it's it's to put it in context of
- 10:56Speaker 6: this was the golden era of Alabama receivers like his
- 11:00Speaker 6: freshman year, It's DeVante Smith, Jalen Wattle, John Metchi. It
- 11:04Speaker 6: doesn't get much better than that in a college receiver room.
- 11:07Speaker 6: And then the year after that, Jamison Williams transferred in
- 11:11Speaker 6: from Ohio State, so it was Jamison Williams and John
- 11:14Speaker 6: Metchi and he was he was probably supposed to be
- 11:16Speaker 6: the third guy in that group, but they ended up
- 11:19Speaker 6: going in a different direction at that point, and that's
- 11:21Speaker 6: when he decided to transfer after that season. But this
- 11:24Speaker 6: was in the run of Alabama receivers that was just
- 11:27Speaker 6: ridiculous every single year. They were like a receiver factory.
- 11:30Speaker 6: And uh, and I don't necessarily blame him for the
- 11:33Speaker 6: fact that he couldn't beat out DeVante Smith, who won
- 11:35Speaker 6: the Heisman.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Trump.
- 11:36Speaker 8: Glad you got the timeline right, because I've heard a
- 11:39Speaker 8: lot of oh, he's behind Jalen Wattle and DeVante Smith,
- 11:41Speaker 8: like he went to Alabama in June of the COVID year,
- 11:46Speaker 8: And yeah, technically, Jalen Wattle was still there. He's a
- 11:51Speaker 8: true freshman coming. He wasn't going to play over the
- 11:53Speaker 8: starting especially not for Nick Wide. Yes, like you're not
- 11:56Speaker 8: gonna like step in, especially in COVID. They didn't practice,
- 12:00Speaker 8: they didn't have any of the preparation that they normally
- 12:02Speaker 8: would have. And then the next year, you know, it
- 12:06Speaker 8: was John Metchi, not you know, Jalen Waddle. Yeah, you know,
- 12:11Speaker 8: and Evan perfectly put that. Still good players, Jamison Williams
- 12:15Speaker 8: and John Metchi, but he probably should have been in
- 12:17Speaker 8: line to get more playing time now his red shirt
- 12:21Speaker 8: freshman year than he did then he left.
- 12:23Speaker 6: Yeah, and here's some of the comments that he had
- 12:25Speaker 6: in his press conference, and from what we know about
- 12:30Speaker 6: Bill and Nick Saban, like, does that really strike you
- 12:32Speaker 6: as the type of guy that it was gonna win
- 12:34Speaker 6: Nick Saban over unless he was just incredibly talented. Yeah,
- 12:38Speaker 6: you know so. But I do think it's important to
- 12:41Speaker 6: put in context that the receiver rooms that he was
- 12:44Speaker 6: in at Alabama were stacked like this is not We're
- 12:47Speaker 6: not just talking about, you know, a receiver room like
- 12:50Speaker 6: the Patriots right now, where there's all this opportunity, you're
- 12:52Speaker 6: not going to beat out a Heisman Trophy winning receiver
- 12:55Speaker 6: for targets.
- 12:56Speaker 3: So I thought it was a good weekend if you
- 12:59Speaker 3: follow it along with us on Patriots dot com and socially,
- 13:02Speaker 3: you saw some really cool content. Drake May seeing his
- 13:05Speaker 3: locker for the first time. I thought was was really neat,
- 13:09Speaker 3: and I think he genuinely was, you know, excited.
- 13:13Speaker 5: You know, it looks like an excited kid.
- 13:15Speaker 8: I mean, it's it's it's it.
- 13:16Speaker 5: He makes me feel old. I was like, my god,
- 13:18Speaker 5: I could be this kid's dad, but no, he's Uh.
- 13:21Speaker 5: I just I said it. Turning the shows. I just
- 13:23Speaker 5: thought it was cool. The relationship with him and his
- 13:25Speaker 5: brothers and his girlfriend and the line of you know
- 13:29Speaker 5: you're getting me, you're getting them. That that stuck out
- 13:31Speaker 5: to me. So it's just it's real clear. I mean
- 13:33Speaker 5: I think I think he might be a little bit sheltered,
- 13:35Speaker 5: you know. I think that that he's probably he's never
- 13:37Speaker 5: been out of North Carolina and you know, he's been
- 13:40Speaker 5: the little brother. So you know, we'll see because I
- 13:42Speaker 5: think what kind of adversity has he faced. I mean,
- 13:45Speaker 5: this is all He's going to be thrown into the
- 13:47Speaker 5: fire of all fires now, oh yeah, and uh, you
- 13:49Speaker 5: know it's it's I compared to, you know, not the player.
- 13:52Speaker 5: But I remember sitting here with Mac when Mac first
- 13:54Speaker 5: came in, and it was, you know, it was pretty cool.
- 13:56Speaker 5: Like when we first drafted Mac, I was excited, and
- 13:59Speaker 5: you know, it's, uh, it's you realize how much he
- 14:01Speaker 5: had to go through from that point on, and you know,
- 14:04Speaker 5: the injuries and the mental stuff and just every you know,
- 14:07Speaker 5: it's just it's it's a real grind. And so you know,
- 14:09Speaker 5: Drake May's twenty one, He's got a great attitude. He's
- 14:11Speaker 5: got some you know, receivers around him that I think
- 14:13Speaker 5: will help him, you know, have a good chance. I mean,
- 14:15Speaker 5: we haven't talked about Joe Milton yet. I mean that,
- 14:18Speaker 5: but I think having another rookie quarterback in there as
- 14:20Speaker 5: well is uh, you know, is in that way is
- 14:23Speaker 5: advantageous that you know they're all gonna be able to
- 14:24Speaker 5: work together and hopefully develop. But it's just the hard
- 14:27Speaker 5: times are waiting for him and he's going to have
- 14:29Speaker 5: to prepare and be ready to overcome that stuff.
- 14:31Speaker 7: I feel like he's already gone through more adversity than
- 14:33Speaker 7: Mac has, though, like Mack was, like sure Mac was
- 14:36Speaker 7: waiting behind three quarterbacks to play, but he's he's like
- 14:41Speaker 7: Drake May has dealt with more in North Carolina, having
- 14:43Speaker 7: nothing this year, a bad offensive line, bad weapons around him,
- 14:46Speaker 7: and he's still found his way to be a number
- 14:48Speaker 7: three overall pick. Obviously not as productive as the years
- 14:50Speaker 7: his previous year, but he played with nothing. Mac had
- 14:53Speaker 7: a whole lot around.
- 14:54Speaker 3: Well, he comes in with more college yeah games and
- 14:57Speaker 3: Mac did you know for sure?
- 14:58Speaker 6: So that's yeah, he has more football adversity, yeah, I
- 15:02Speaker 6: would say than Mac Jones. But your point about him
- 15:06Speaker 6: out of shelters the right word. But like he's he
- 15:09Speaker 6: he is from North Carolina. He was originally committed to Alabama,
- 15:14Speaker 6: decommitted from Alabama to stay in North Carolina and go
- 15:17Speaker 6: to UNC. And I don't, like he said, other than
- 15:20Speaker 6: to travel to road games, he's never left the state
- 15:23Speaker 6: of North Carolina, So that that's going to be something
- 15:26Speaker 6: that will be I'm sure for any kid like I remember,
- 15:29Speaker 6: you know, moving out to LA when I graduated college.
- 15:32Speaker 6: That's it's a culture shock, like for anybody that age.
- 15:35Speaker 6: So that will be interesting to see. How I don't
- 15:38Speaker 6: know if he's ever really been in like true winter before.
- 15:41Speaker 5: Which I didn't hear anyone.
- 15:44Speaker 6: That's where it comes out in.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Like a parka. He's like, you don't have to dress
- 15:48Speaker 3: in winter clothes here.
- 15:49Speaker 8: That was I will say.
- 15:50Speaker 7: I feel like from a person standpoint, a lot of
- 15:53Speaker 7: people don't get out of their state until they graduate college,
- 15:57Speaker 7: just saying like unless your family is wealthy and can
- 16:00Speaker 7: make you on vacations. Like I know a ton of
- 16:02Speaker 7: people that I went to school with that never went
- 16:04Speaker 7: anywhere until after they graduated him, so.
- 16:06Speaker 5: Did they have to perform their job in the snow
- 16:08Speaker 5: after they graduated.
- 16:09Speaker 8: That I was not wealthy the state.
- 16:13Speaker 3: I never I never was on a plane until college.
- 16:17Speaker 7: Yeah, you know, like there's so many people who haven't
- 16:19Speaker 7: gone anywhere.
- 16:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:21Speaker 5: Well, I mean I think it's it's just for me.
- 16:23Speaker 5: It's also just his comportment, like he's you know, he's
- 16:27Speaker 5: just not doesn't seem like a very worldly kid, like
- 16:29Speaker 5: you know, it seems like he's known sports and North
- 16:32Speaker 5: Carolina and football, and that's kind of it, right.
- 16:35Speaker 8: You know.
- 16:35Speaker 5: And I mean it look it's fine, Like I mean,
- 16:37Speaker 5: you're right, everybody's been like that before. But I just
- 16:39Speaker 5: think when you look at a kid who's going to
- 16:41Speaker 5: go through the kind of ups and downs that Mac
- 16:43Speaker 5: had to deal with, like that's just waiting for him.
- 16:45Speaker 5: It's going to happen, you know, you don't know how
- 16:47Speaker 5: anybody's going to react to that.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean Max's first year, he was coddled. He
- 16:51Speaker 3: was you know, they Josh McDaniels took care. I mean,
- 16:54Speaker 3: he wasn't. He started right away, but I don't think
- 16:57Speaker 3: he was expected to do everything right away.
- 17:00Speaker 5: But like you look at other players too that are
- 17:01Speaker 5: coming into the NFL who transferred schools, who had you know,
- 17:05Speaker 5: didn't go great at a place, had to you know,
- 17:07Speaker 5: pick up shop and go somewhere else and re establish
- 17:09Speaker 5: themselves those kind of things. So you know, those little
- 17:12Speaker 5: things all add up for me. And and you know,
- 17:13Speaker 5: it's not a negative, it's just something that I think
- 17:16Speaker 5: he's gonna that's gonna be his biggest area of growth.
- 17:18Speaker 5: Like I always thought when Gronk was drafted, he seems
- 17:21Speaker 5: so innocent and pure, and I was like, man, I
- 17:22Speaker 5: don't want to think about like Gronk when he's bitter
- 17:24Speaker 5: and jaded and old and you know, not that that's
- 17:26Speaker 5: what Drake May is gonna be. And Gronk didn't become that,
- 17:28Speaker 5: but you know, there's gonna be grown up Drake May
- 17:31Speaker 5: who's bent out to the woodshed and you know, had
- 17:34Speaker 5: to deal with getting his doors blown off and getting
- 17:36Speaker 5: lit up and you know those kind of things.
- 17:37Speaker 8: So let's hope that he doesn't have to deal with that, like.
- 17:42Speaker 6: Right half jokingly, but like at the same time, you know,
- 17:45Speaker 6: you use Gronk as an example. Gronk was just awesome,
- 17:47Speaker 6: like right away, and if you know, there's something to
- 17:50Speaker 6: be said for the fact that he just he could
- 17:52Speaker 6: be great and like you know all this others, like
- 17:55Speaker 6: he's obviously gonna have ups and downs, but like if
- 17:57Speaker 6: he's you know, as good as.
- 17:58Speaker 5: He's an all time great, he'll be okay.
- 18:00Speaker 8: But that's ultimately we can talk and we will and
- 18:04Speaker 8: we're going to continue to do it about this draft class.
- 18:06Speaker 8: That's ultimately what it's going to come down to. If
- 18:09Speaker 8: Drake Bay hits, we're gonna love this draft class. If
- 18:12Speaker 8: it doesn't, there's not a whole lot those other guys
- 18:15Speaker 8: are gonna be.
- 18:15Speaker 9: Able to do to overcome that, because the receivers won't
- 18:18Speaker 9: pop without him popping. Probably, I mean, I don't think
- 18:21Speaker 9: that they really profile as guys that lift the quarterback anyway.
- 18:25Speaker 9: Especially Polk, I think is sort of a guy who's
- 18:28Speaker 9: just kind of solid and steady, Like at his best,
- 18:31Speaker 9: he's like there's Jalen Polk again on third down, you know,
- 18:34Speaker 9: making a play that's high end Jalen Polk to me,
- 18:38Speaker 9: and that's great, that's what exactly what you're looking for.
- 18:41Speaker 9: But if the quarterback can't get him the ball, I
- 18:43Speaker 9: don't think he's going to be the kind of guy
- 18:45Speaker 9: that's going to make the quarterback better if he just
- 18:48Speaker 9: can't play. So ultimately, this is coming down to Drake May.
- 18:53Speaker 3: We mentioned Joe Milton a lot of people kind of
- 18:56Speaker 3: we're surprised that the Patriots took him in the sixth round.
- 19:00Speaker 7: Honestly, I think it's really funny that you use we
- 19:03Speaker 7: use the pick that we got from the Jaguars to
- 19:05Speaker 7: draft a quarterback with way better talent than Mac Jones.
- 19:09Speaker 7: Obviously he has some accuracy accuracy issues, but great arm
- 19:14Speaker 7: and unbelievable athlete.
- 19:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:16Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm kind of torn on that one. I'll let
- 19:19Speaker 5: the boys kind of lay out the negative part of it,
- 19:22Speaker 5: but it's just, uh, Evan, I don't want to steal
- 19:24Speaker 5: your line. But it's exactly what I thought, which was
- 19:26Speaker 5: kind of felt mine Gamy with like the Max stuff.
- 19:29Speaker 5: You know, oh, we're going to take another quarterback now,
- 19:31Speaker 5: and you know what, what what's the point? The point?
- 19:35Speaker 7: And to be fair, like you need a better backup
- 19:37Speaker 7: than Billy's happy.
- 19:38Speaker 6: But he's but he's a developmental player. Yeah, And I
- 19:42Speaker 6: just my whole thing is is that I know we're
- 19:45Speaker 6: gonna get out there to in the spring, in the
- 19:47Speaker 6: summer and and shorts and a T shirt. Joe Milton
- 19:49Speaker 6: is going to look just as impressive as as Drake May.
- 19:52Speaker 6: The arm, talent, the mobility, the size, like all of
- 19:55Speaker 6: it is going to be just as impressive. And to
- 19:59Speaker 6: deuce his point, just as second ago about how does
- 20:01Speaker 6: Drake May handle it? How does Drake May handle it
- 20:03Speaker 6: when in the second half of preseason games against Scrubs,
- 20:06Speaker 6: Joe Milton is lighting it up. And then we have
- 20:08Speaker 6: people calling into our shows and stuff like that saying, well,
- 20:11Speaker 6: why don't they give Joe Milton a try?
- 20:12Speaker 8: I like, I didn't like anything about the pick because
- 20:17Speaker 8: I just don't think he's very good, sneaky, He's not
- 20:19Speaker 8: good at football. But the intangible stuff that Evan just
- 20:24Speaker 8: introduced is why I think I don't like it the most.
- 20:27Speaker 8: And we had a really good in depth post on
- 20:31Speaker 8: the Mailbag this week and I sort of tried my
- 20:35Speaker 8: best to sort of downplay it, but I got to
- 20:36Speaker 8: be honest, that guy made a lot of good points
- 20:38Speaker 8: about that kind of stuff, Like if he goes out
- 20:42Speaker 8: there and does a Michael Bishop fred, how does that
- 20:45Speaker 8: impact Drake May. Michael Bishop wasn't anything great. He just
- 20:49Speaker 8: was a tremendous athlete who ran around and did eye
- 20:51Speaker 8: popping things in preseason games that were meaningless. And that's
- 20:56Speaker 8: just going to create sort of unwanted controversy.
- 21:00Speaker 7: And here's what I feel like, he needs to be
- 21:02Speaker 7: mentally tough, Like if you're going to grow out there
- 21:04Speaker 7: and pee your pants because Joe Milton has.
- 21:07Speaker 8: His parents, it's just not a good situation. We spent
- 21:10Speaker 8: three years making excuses for Mac Jones because you didn't
- 21:13Speaker 8: have the right things around him and they ruined him.
- 21:16Speaker 8: This to me seems like you're going out of your
- 21:18Speaker 8: way to create controversy.
- 21:21Speaker 3: I don't that. I don't know, Yeah, I don't think.
- 21:23Speaker 8: So the guy can't play.
- 21:25Speaker 3: Here's what.
- 21:27Speaker 7: Since he can't play, Drake May should have nothing to
- 21:30Speaker 7: worry about.
- 21:30Speaker 5: Period.
- 21:31Speaker 8: He doesn't matter.
- 21:33Speaker 6: It's not about that people that tried to call us
- 21:35Speaker 6: and tell us that Millie Cunningham was the answer, They're
- 21:38Speaker 6: going to see him throw one seventy five yard pass
- 21:41Speaker 6: in the first preseason game in the fourth quarter and
- 21:43Speaker 6: say that this guy is better than the guy they
- 21:45Speaker 6: d not a tenth.
- 21:46Speaker 8: Of what Malik was.
- 21:48Speaker 3: I don't think this coach. I think the coaches will
- 21:50Speaker 3: deal with that. But but but you're.
- 21:52Speaker 8: Missing the point. People are completely missing the point on it.
- 21:55Speaker 8: It's not about who's the guy. Drake May is the guy.
- 21:59Speaker 8: It's one hundred percent it's Drake May. But you're creating
- 22:03Speaker 8: a possibility of having all kinds of noise which you're
- 22:07Speaker 8: supposed to work to try to avoid.
- 22:10Speaker 7: Yeah, to be honest, I think the only people making
- 22:12Speaker 7: noise are the media.
- 22:13Speaker 8: Fans.
- 22:14Speaker 3: Fans will be making noise.
- 22:15Speaker 8: I will guarantee it. In the summer, people like you
- 22:18Speaker 8: will be saying, look at the arm, look at the athletics.
- 22:22Speaker 8: People are going to say, be mentally tied with Drake May.
- 22:27Speaker 8: It's the noise that you're creating, just like saying you
- 22:30Speaker 8: can handle it perfect.
- 22:31Speaker 7: That's just like saying to the current wide receiver room,
- 22:33Speaker 7: they should be scared right now because of all the
- 22:36Speaker 7: people that we just drafted.
- 22:37Speaker 8: Right you need six receivers.
- 22:39Speaker 7: You don't need more than one quarter receivers right now.
- 22:43Speaker 8: You don't need more than one quarterback. You need all
- 22:45Speaker 8: of us receivers and you have like twelve receivers right now.
- 22:48Speaker 3: They should be they should be. We do not.
- 22:52Speaker 8: They have four receivers that are going to make the
- 22:54Speaker 8: team that we know of what happens after.
- 22:56Speaker 7: There's a lot of them on the roster.
- 22:57Speaker 8: There's a lot of scrubs on the roster that not
- 23:00Speaker 8: in the NFL.
- 23:01Speaker 3: But I I agree with Tomorrow. I think if Drake May,
- 23:05Speaker 3: if Drake May isn't showing that he has a good
- 23:07Speaker 3: arm in his athletic then we have problems. Well, you know,
- 23:11Speaker 3: it's not about what Joe Milton. I know I'm saying it.
- 23:14Speaker 3: It's not about what Joe Milton shows us in this summer.
- 23:17Speaker 3: It's about what Drake May shows us.
- 23:18Speaker 8: Think you take every shot you can to get players
- 23:20Speaker 8: to help your team.
- 23:21Speaker 3: But here's what I hope, Here's what I hope. I
- 23:24Speaker 3: hope happens with Joe Milton. You know he said it's
- 23:28Speaker 3: not gonna happen. I'm going to be a tight end.
- 23:30Speaker 3: Rod Mayo said, we draft him as a quarterback. But
- 23:33Speaker 3: I hope he gets out there and it becomes very
- 23:35Speaker 3: apparent he cannot be a quarterback. And I hope at
- 23:38Speaker 3: some point he realizes that and they have a sit
- 23:41Speaker 3: down and say, hey, this doesn't work, This isn't working out.
- 23:45Speaker 3: What do you think how about taking some reps to
- 23:48Speaker 3: tight end? What do you think?
- 23:49Speaker 6: I don't think he's his footwork and his feet are
- 23:52Speaker 6: not like they could train him. I guess long term
- 23:55Speaker 6: to be a tight end. But I just I don't
- 23:57Speaker 6: think his athleticism translates very well to like receive. I
- 24:01Speaker 6: just I would Paul on this. I understand that Drake
- 24:04Speaker 6: may should be mentally tougher. I agree with that point,
- 24:06Speaker 6: but why test it? Like, why do we have to
- 24:09Speaker 6: test these guys mentally all the time where they have
- 24:11Speaker 6: to deal with all this crap and it's the same
- 24:14Speaker 6: thing that they did with Mac Jones. You know, we
- 24:16Speaker 6: have people out here on Monday night football chanting the
- 24:19Speaker 6: backup quarterback's name. You know, we have all this kind
- 24:23Speaker 6: of stuff. We have people thought that you raft.
- 24:24Speaker 3: Every one of us said, yeah, I wouldn't be surprised
- 24:27Speaker 3: if they draft a quarterback later.
- 24:28Speaker 6: And yeah quarterback, Yeah, like like Michael Pratt who developed
- 24:31Speaker 6: mental prospect.
- 24:32Speaker 8: That's not gonna like create any waves. This is going
- 24:36Speaker 8: out of your way to just have a physical freak
- 24:38Speaker 8: out there is to run around.
- 24:40Speaker 3: Okay, listen, I'm sorry.
- 24:42Speaker 8: I'm sorry that I don't have the same opinion as
- 24:43Speaker 8: you want to play. You have to get so defense
- 24:46Speaker 8: because all of a sudden, the Patriots made a pick
- 24:48Speaker 8: and three of us don't like it, and we're like
- 24:51Speaker 8: cast aside. You're about this, okay, whatever.
- 24:57Speaker 3: You know, people have a different opinion. Now you're like
- 25:00Speaker 3: ready to like fold up like a baby. A baby.
- 25:03Speaker 5: I didn't even think of Evans and making fun of it.
- 25:06Speaker 5: That the Molie Cunningham. I didn't even think of that,
- 25:09Speaker 5: and that that that's my thing too. I'm with the
- 25:11Speaker 5: movie coming on. Yeah, sorry, I but.
- 25:19Speaker 3: I mean when Michael Bishop was running around, people were
- 25:21Speaker 3: screaming for Michael Bishop. It didn't affect the quarterback. I
- 25:24Speaker 3: mean it was not a big deal.
- 25:25Speaker 8: No, and I mean honestly it was the quarterback when
- 25:28Speaker 8: that happened.
- 25:28Speaker 3: I forget it doesn't Okay, but you know, so.
- 25:33Speaker 8: What, well, it's the same. It's the same six year veterans.
- 25:37Speaker 3: You really think the coaches are going to be and
- 25:40Speaker 3: you know, coach, they're going to be like, oh my god,
- 25:42Speaker 3: I think the coaches care. The fans are yelling. Fans
- 25:45Speaker 3: are yelling for Joe Milton. What are we going to do?
- 25:48Speaker 8: Why do you like? So?
- 25:50Speaker 7: What if they drafted Spencer Rattler instead of Joe Milton
- 25:54Speaker 7: would be the same thing.
- 25:55Speaker 3: If he came out and was lighting it up game,
- 25:58Speaker 3: people would be saying, oh, look at.
- 26:00Speaker 6: Because that because the thing is is like Joe Milton
- 26:03Speaker 6: has physical traits. That again, I'm not talking about the
- 26:07Speaker 6: people sitting at this table right now, I promise actually.
- 26:09Speaker 8: A good one.
- 26:09Speaker 7: How about Sam Hartman?
- 26:10Speaker 3: Would that be a no? Because Sam?
- 26:12Speaker 6: No, Yeah, you could drave Sam Hartman, I said Michael Pratt.
- 26:14Speaker 6: Michael Pratt is like Bailey's Appy, right, Like it's going
- 26:17Speaker 6: to be clear to everybody that Drake May is more
- 26:21Speaker 6: physically talented than Michael Pratt.
- 26:24Speaker 8: The problem that I don't.
- 26:25Speaker 3: Want to be clear that he's physically better.
- 26:26Speaker 8: Than not to the casuals.
- 26:28Speaker 3: No, but it's like MALIEK.
- 26:30Speaker 5: Cunningham.
- 26:31Speaker 3: MALIEK.
- 26:31Speaker 5: Cunningham ran like the wind and we heard three straight
- 26:33Speaker 5: months of put in, Malik put in.
- 26:35Speaker 6: I'm not worried about people in this building not realizing
- 26:39Speaker 6: that Drake May is better than Joe Milton. I'm worried
- 26:41Speaker 6: about people that don't have the football knowledge that Gerrod
- 26:44Speaker 6: Mayo has looking at it and saying, this guy can
- 26:47Speaker 6: throw it seventy five yards and that guy can throw
- 26:49Speaker 6: it seventy five yards.
- 26:50Speaker 3: What's the difference. And you think that's going to affect
- 26:52Speaker 3: Drake may No, I hope not. But that's all we
- 26:56Speaker 3: care about that. I hope not.
- 26:58Speaker 8: It did affect the last quarterback.
- 26:59Speaker 3: If it doesn't, If then who cares what the fans
- 27:02Speaker 3: are saying? As long as in that in that room.
- 27:04Speaker 6: When the when the Patriots drafted Jimmy Garoppolo and affected
- 27:08Speaker 6: that guy, And yeah, he used it as motivation, but
- 27:12Speaker 6: not everybody is wired that way.
- 27:14Speaker 3: Especially especially picked the wrong guy.
- 27:20Speaker 6: Everybody all that. So many of these kids are like that.
- 27:23Speaker 6: Now though, that's the problem. That's the problem, like that
- 27:27Speaker 6: that that's this generation. Like that's what it is like.
- 27:33Speaker 6: You know a lot of in all sports, you know,
- 27:35Speaker 6: they they're the man that this is my territory. And
- 27:39Speaker 6: when you you tell me differently, a lot of these
- 27:41Speaker 6: guys pout that's just the way it is.
- 27:44Speaker 3: Well, I mean, right now, it's not his territory. He's
- 27:47Speaker 3: gonna have to earn this job by what he does
- 27:49Speaker 3: on the field, and if it's not apparent, and again
- 27:54Speaker 3: the subtleties are going to be lost on the casual fan.
- 27:56Speaker 3: I agree with that, right, but we're hoping that this
- 27:59Speaker 3: is a competent coaching staff and they will realize the
- 28:03Speaker 3: difference between Drake May and Joe Milton.
- 28:06Speaker 6: The coaches, I have no doubt, are going to recognize that.
- 28:09Speaker 3: Well and and and Drake May will understand that he's
- 28:13Speaker 3: doing things better than Joe Milton should know that, and
- 28:18Speaker 3: that's it.
- 28:19Speaker 5: I'm not, honestly, I'm not even that worried, that worried
- 28:22Speaker 5: about the football of it all. It's honestly just I
- 28:24Speaker 5: don't want to deal with four months. You don't have
- 28:26Speaker 5: to call like we had with Malik Cunningham, and I'm like,
- 28:28Speaker 5: I can't even talk to you guys right now.
- 28:30Speaker 3: I think that's fun. Who cares, it's let them say
- 28:34Speaker 3: what they say.
- 28:36Speaker 7: I never once wanted Malik to start over.
- 28:38Speaker 8: No one, no one, no one actually did know.
- 28:42Speaker 5: But there were plenty of people. How much did we
- 28:43Speaker 5: talk about Malie Cunningham.
- 28:44Speaker 6: On every time I wrote about Malik Cunningham and the
- 28:48Speaker 6: post would blow up for no reason, like, oh, they
- 28:50Speaker 6: elevated him from the practice squad. He didn't even play
- 28:53Speaker 6: in the game, but they elevated him and everybody read
- 28:55Speaker 6: about it like it's just I understand that it's all
- 28:59Speaker 6: not gonna matter, and six months from now, we're gonna
- 29:01Speaker 6: really Like remember when we argued for like thirty minutes
- 29:04Speaker 6: about Joe Milton and Drake May and all this stuff.
- 29:06Speaker 8: I get all that.
- 29:08Speaker 6: I just am telling you that there are people outside
- 29:10Speaker 6: this room that cover this team that are not gonna
- 29:13Speaker 6: know the difference between the two guys, and that is
- 29:16Speaker 6: concerning to me.
- 29:17Speaker 3: But but I mean, how many I don't know why
- 29:20Speaker 3: you're so wrapped up about what fans understand and what
- 29:23Speaker 3: they don't. It's up to me because it creates That's
- 29:25Speaker 3: why you're here because it because it.
- 29:28Speaker 6: Creates how bad outside noise. It just creates the outside noise,
- 29:32Speaker 6: and we just watched it happen with Mac Jones.
- 29:34Speaker 3: But it's I don't think there's anything you can do
- 29:37Speaker 3: about that. There's always going to be someone that the
- 29:39Speaker 3: fans are clamoring for, whether it's Malie Cunningham or Michael
- 29:42Speaker 3: Bishop or whoever. It's the you know, you know, the
- 29:45Speaker 3: next shiny little toy. I remember when Michael Bishop, who
- 29:49Speaker 3: was the receiver from Brown. That was Oh god, yeah,
- 29:54Speaker 3: what was Sean Moore? Oh, Sean Moore is gonna be
- 29:58Speaker 3: the next big thing.
- 29:59Speaker 5: It's like, come on, well, I think too part of it.
- 30:01Speaker 10: You want to be excited about Drake May and you
- 30:03Speaker 10: don't all of a sudden have two camps that are
- 30:04Speaker 10: going to emerge of you know, the team Milton who.
- 30:08Speaker 8: See it now?
- 30:09Speaker 6: Day one of Patriots Mini camp here in June and
- 30:13Speaker 6: Joe Milton threw the ball better than Drake May. I'm
- 30:15Speaker 6: telling you, Mike, like, I just can see it now.
- 30:17Speaker 10: Put him in.
- 30:18Speaker 5: I don't know what's the problem May struggling, Mike.
- 30:22Speaker 3: It will happen. I'm sure that will happen.
- 30:25Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, wow. I mean now they got something else
- 30:28Speaker 5: to figure out how to manage too with you know,
- 30:30Speaker 5: just we talked about when we may get in there.
- 30:32Speaker 5: I mean, you know, it's it's just another body in there.
- 30:34Speaker 5: I mean, I do think right now because five receivers,
- 30:37Speaker 5: right yeah, I mean I think it affects Bailey ZAPPI
- 30:39Speaker 5: probably more than anybody because I thought, you know, it
- 30:41Speaker 5: seemed like Billy get traded.
- 30:43Speaker 6: Those the rumors, like rap Sheet said after they took
- 30:46Speaker 6: Joe Milton that they've been trying to shop Bailey Zappy
- 30:49Speaker 6: and he's available in the trade.
- 30:51Speaker 3: Interesting, yeah, yeah, so all right, good stuff, good stuff, webs.
- 30:57Speaker 8: Just can I just throw one last thing out here, yes, Paul.
- 31:00Speaker 8: So if let's just say, disaster strikes and this negatively
- 31:05Speaker 8: impacts Drake May and you stuck without a quarterback.
- 31:11Speaker 3: So make May is playing but he's not playing well and.
- 31:14Speaker 8: Yeah, and then and the mentality is like Mac, well,
- 31:17Speaker 8: well they didn't do anything to support them, and they
- 31:19Speaker 8: they failed them, you know, they ruined them, And that's
- 31:22Speaker 8: the that's the narrative. Say this time in two years
- 31:26Speaker 8: they ruined them. We're not allowed to say.
- 31:29Speaker 3: That by drafting Joe Milton.
- 31:30Speaker 8: We're not allowed to say. Yeah, we're not allowed to
- 31:32Speaker 8: say it.
- 31:32Speaker 3: Though, well I think that would be incorrect.
- 31:35Speaker 8: But but you didn't see it. No, But if it's
- 31:38Speaker 8: a hypothetic, if that's what ruined him, that this is
- 31:40Speaker 8: a complete hypothetical, it's incorrect, I know.
- 31:43Speaker 3: But like I'm sure like in three years, if Drake
- 31:45Speaker 3: May is a bust, there's going to be more reasons
- 31:49Speaker 3: than they drafted Joe Milton.
- 31:51Speaker 8: Right, were there more reasons mac Jones was a bust
- 31:53Speaker 8: other than they hired Matt Patricia for the offensive coordinator. Yeah,
- 31:56Speaker 8: is that the reason why people think that.
- 31:57Speaker 3: They ruined him. Yeah, that's one of the reason. Yeah,
- 32:01Speaker 3: you know, but you're not allowed to say that. That's
- 32:02Speaker 3: a lot different than drafting. I don't hear you say
- 32:05Speaker 3: it's it's not even apples to apples.
- 32:07Speaker 8: So don't don't ever say it.
- 32:09Speaker 3: Then, No, it's not even a fair comparison.
- 32:11Speaker 8: So don't say it. Don't don't change your mind.
- 32:14Speaker 3: Okay, I won't. I probably won't want.
- 32:17Speaker 8: No one's allowed to say that. Okay, we broke all
- 32:19Speaker 8: the rules here, Paul, you disagree, we disagree with the
- 32:22Speaker 8: Patriots moved.
- 32:23Speaker 3: You're allowed to broke the rules. You're allowed to say
- 32:25Speaker 3: whatever you want, and everyone's allowed to.
- 32:27Speaker 8: If I do that, I'm just being a baby. So
- 32:29Speaker 8: I'm not going to do that.
- 32:30Speaker 3: Yeah, when you when you start saying, well, I can't
- 32:32Speaker 3: say what when you act like a baby, I mean.
- 32:35Speaker 8: You have to pander you You can't say what you
- 32:38Speaker 8: want to say.
- 32:39Speaker 3: What's pandering by saying my opinion? I'm pandering?
- 32:43Speaker 7: Ye?
- 32:43Speaker 8: Okay, all right, yep, yeah, yeah, So so I will
- 32:49Speaker 8: check it at the door next time. Okay, I'll be
- 32:51Speaker 8: all on board, baby Patriots filtered from now on.
- 32:54Speaker 3: Okay, Paul, you don't have to filter it, but you
- 32:57Speaker 3: have to be a big boy when someone pushes back.
- 33:01Speaker 3: That's all. That's all I'm saying.
- 33:03Speaker 8: All right, you're the arbiter of justice.
- 33:05Speaker 3: Yes I am. It's my show. Eight five to five.
- 33:08Speaker 3: Pass five hundred is the hotline, web radio pages dot
- 33:12Speaker 3: com is the email address.
- 33:14Speaker 8: Totally pathetic.
- 33:15Speaker 3: Oh, he just won't stop, He just won't stop. Joe Milton, Yeah,
- 33:20Speaker 3: Joe Milton.
- 33:23Speaker 8: You couldn't have an opinion on draft picks. I thought
- 33:27Speaker 8: that we were supposed to give that.
- 33:28Speaker 3: Well what I was wrong? Why can't you give your opinion?
- 33:31Speaker 8: Because I'm mocked for it? All you do is laugh?
- 33:35Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, all right, you did? All right?
- 33:38Speaker 8: Call me names.
- 33:38Speaker 3: I disagree, mocking, yeah, mocking. Not because of your opinion.
- 33:42Speaker 8: Well that's the way I took it. I dissented.
- 33:45Speaker 3: I'm sorry, Paul.
- 33:47Speaker 8: That'd be audacity to not agree. Yeah, and and sorry, Yeah,
- 33:51Speaker 8: I won't let it happen.
- 33:52Speaker 3: This is what you're being mocked for, Paul, this attitude.
- 33:56Speaker 3: You can have a different opinion, but like not the
- 33:58Speaker 3: way I see it. When someone disagrees, then again, I.
- 34:01Speaker 8: Don't see it the way you do, so I'm automatically wrong.
- 34:04Speaker 8: I don't see it that way.
- 34:05Speaker 3: You're not wrong, no one, no one's wrong. It's just
- 34:08Speaker 3: like I don't know why you have to like act
- 34:10Speaker 3: that way, like everyone's at acting.
- 34:13Speaker 8: Like I'm acting anyway. Okay, all right, but I don't
- 34:15Speaker 8: just I don't agree with you. So it's not the
- 34:19Speaker 8: same way. That's the way you see it has to
- 34:21Speaker 8: be the way we see it. Well, I see it.
- 34:24Speaker 8: I shouldn't put what.
- 34:25Speaker 3: I don't understand why two people can't have different opinions.
- 34:28Speaker 3: I don't either, you know, So as soon as I
- 34:31Speaker 3: push back, you act like a baby. That's what I'm saying.
- 34:34Speaker 8: Enough for pushing back, for the mocking, the laughing, like
- 34:38Speaker 8: how could you even think that?
- 34:39Speaker 1: Well?
- 34:39Speaker 3: So what so what what I mean?
- 34:44Speaker 8: You know, I believe me. I told you I will
- 34:46Speaker 8: try to just conform. Okay, now on I'll try not
- 34:51Speaker 8: to have my thoughts aired.
- 34:54Speaker 3: Okay, what about Kaden Wallace? Yeah, I was gonna move
- 34:57Speaker 3: on to Christian Barmore because you know, I think I
- 35:00Speaker 3: think we might be all in agreement. That was a
- 35:03Speaker 3: good move by the Patriots.
- 35:04Speaker 5: It was a good move for the Patriots. Yeah, yeah, sure,
- 35:06Speaker 5: I mean long needed and you know Dougger him.
- 35:09Speaker 3: Yeah, and when you Jennings, now, I was a little surprised,
- 35:13Speaker 3: and you know that only about half of it was guaranteed,
- 35:17Speaker 3: because in today's day and age, like a lot of
- 35:20Speaker 3: these deals like seventy five percent are being guaranteed. But
- 35:23Speaker 3: I think it's a good lesson when you have a
- 35:26Speaker 3: guy like that, do it early, as early as you
- 35:28Speaker 3: can do it a year early. Don't wait, you know,
- 35:31Speaker 3: get that thing done.
- 35:33Speaker 5: That's I mean, that's that's the whole thing. I mean,
- 35:35Speaker 5: why you know, why wasn't Dougger done last year? You know,
- 35:37Speaker 5: it's the same same kind of thing, you know.
- 35:41Speaker 6: I just I think to me, it's just it's two
- 35:44Speaker 6: different ways. And I always feel like we come or
- 35:47Speaker 6: I come across it, and I want to speak for
- 35:48Speaker 6: you guys, like it's always Bill's ray was always wrong,
- 35:51Speaker 6: which might not be the case right or it wasn't
- 35:53Speaker 6: always the case. But Bill would have drafted Christian Barmore's
- 35:57Speaker 6: replacement this year. He would have used a premium pick
- 36:01Speaker 6: on a defensive tackle, and he would have said in
- 36:04Speaker 6: a year from now, he's gonna train under Christian Barmore
- 36:07Speaker 6: for a year and a year from now, we're gonna
- 36:09Speaker 6: let Barmore walk for the third round compick and this
- 36:12Speaker 6: guy's gonna take his place, and we're not going to
- 36:14Speaker 6: miss a beat. And he would have done the same thing.
- 36:16Speaker 6: He did the same thing. He drafted Marty Mapu to
- 36:18Speaker 6: replace Kyle Dugger. He did the same thing with Kyle Dugger.
- 36:22Speaker 6: And I think the bigger thing that you see with
- 36:24Speaker 6: that is one, it's not that the next player is
- 36:27Speaker 6: not always as good, which is I think the situation
- 36:30Speaker 6: they got into the last couple of years. And two Thenett,
- 36:35Speaker 6: you don't use that asset on other holes. So now
- 36:37Speaker 6: you're drafting a defensive tackle in the second round and
- 36:40Speaker 6: you're not drafting Jalen Polk. So it just has a
- 36:42Speaker 6: dominant effect. Now in the long run about the individual player,
- 36:47Speaker 6: maybe Bill will end up would have ended up being right.
- 36:50Speaker 6: Maybe Kyle Duger this is as good as he's gonna get.
- 36:53Speaker 6: And maybe you know, the contract in a year from
- 36:55Speaker 6: now is gonna look terrible, and Bill would have been
- 36:58Speaker 6: right in terms of the individual player. But it's all
- 37:01Speaker 6: you know, there's a lot more of a web there
- 37:03Speaker 6: than just what effect it has on that one player.
- 37:06Speaker 6: Last year, they drafted everybody's replacements, that's what they did.
- 37:09Speaker 5: And you can't just do that every year. I mean,
- 37:10Speaker 5: that's just you fall out of the cycle. You only
- 37:12Speaker 5: have maybe at nine to ten draft picks a year.
- 37:14Speaker 5: You can't just continue, excuse me, to recycle things. And
- 37:17Speaker 5: that's the problem. They weren't enough of those guys. There
- 37:19Speaker 5: weren't enough extensions they got. You know, they lost their way,
- 37:23Speaker 5: especially on the offensive side of the ball, and then
- 37:24Speaker 5: it seemed like they just started running this like we'll
- 37:26Speaker 5: just replace them on defense kind of thing. So I
- 37:29Speaker 5: think it's a good move for Barmore. I mean, you know,
- 37:30Speaker 5: four years extension, he's here for a while. I mean
- 37:33Speaker 5: I still think, you know, not to get ahead of ourselves,
- 37:35Speaker 5: but defense is going to need to be rebuilt.
- 37:38Speaker 3: Oh yeah. I mean everyone's assuming that the defense is
- 37:40Speaker 3: going to be just pick up where it left off.
- 37:43Speaker 3: Last year.
- 37:43Speaker 5: Well, I mean this year maybe, I mean this year maybe,
- 37:45Speaker 5: I mean they'll get they'll get some guys back, and
- 37:47Speaker 5: I mean, but you know, next year, it's it's Godshaw Wise,
- 37:51Speaker 5: you know, Bentley, all those guys are out next year,
- 37:53Speaker 5: so you know, they're, yeah, it was good to get Barmore.
- 37:56Speaker 5: So you have one piece up front.
- 37:57Speaker 7: That I also like that when you exert this much
- 38:00Speaker 7: energy and you promote draft and develop guys, it's like
- 38:03Speaker 7: you aren't that much energy developing bar More into what
- 38:05Speaker 7: he is today. Like why would you let him walk
- 38:07Speaker 7: out the door and let someone else like profit.
- 38:09Speaker 8: Off of that.
- 38:09Speaker 5: That's a hard thing too, Like guys like Toney, you know,
- 38:11Speaker 5: it's just guys that you drafted, you developed. You know,
- 38:13Speaker 5: they're good players, and it's you.
- 38:16Speaker 6: Know, he would have done the same thing with Mike
- 38:18Speaker 6: on Wenhu, Like they drafted Citisow to replace Mike on Weho.
- 38:22Speaker 5: Yeah, they just never drafted anybody to replace Gronk or Edelman,
- 38:25Speaker 5: and they.
- 38:27Speaker 8: Just drafted bad players.
- 38:28Speaker 3: Like and plus, you know, when you compare the drafts
- 38:31Speaker 3: when Brady was here to drafts that it's not a
- 38:34Speaker 3: fair comparison, you know, because you could take chances with
- 38:36Speaker 3: Brady and screw up and you'd still win twelve games,
- 38:40Speaker 3: you know, and so you didn't notice it as much.
- 38:43Speaker 3: Plus you had a foundation of like good players. I
- 38:45Speaker 3: think now the foundation is bar More, you know, the
- 38:49Speaker 3: hopefully the foundation is dugger and guys like that you
- 38:53Speaker 3: need to keep those guys were in the past. You know,
- 38:57Speaker 3: maybe you didn't have to do that. Maybe you drafted
- 38:59Speaker 3: guys that were replacements so that you could keep that
- 39:02Speaker 3: salary down and you know, spend it on Tom Brady
- 39:06Speaker 3: or whatever. But you know, it's it's not fair to
- 39:10Speaker 3: compare the post Brady drafts to Bratt drafts that you
- 39:13Speaker 3: had with Brady.
- 39:14Speaker 8: I agree, because there's a talent level that you didn't
- 39:16Speaker 8: necessarily need to have when Brady was here. Right now,
- 39:19Speaker 8: I love the Barmore resigning and I'm not necessarily sure
- 39:24Speaker 8: that it's not one that Bill would have mait. It's
- 39:26Speaker 8: like Michael and you, they wouldn't have done that. Well,
- 39:28Speaker 8: they just did it with Jack Mason five years ago,
- 39:31Speaker 8: Like they drafted a guard that really hit and they
- 39:33Speaker 8: gave him a big time extension. Now they pulled the
- 39:37Speaker 8: plug in the middle of the extension. But that's different,
- 39:40Speaker 8: Like they did give him a second contract. And I
- 39:43Speaker 8: think there are other guys that he feels like. I
- 39:46Speaker 8: think we have no way of knowing this, but I
- 39:48Speaker 8: think he may have felt Barmel was different because Barbera
- 39:51Speaker 8: was special as opposed to maybe to Evan's point about
- 39:54Speaker 8: Dugger and Mapu. Maybe he just feels like Douger is
- 39:57Speaker 8: just another guy, and maybe he wouldn't have got that
- 40:00Speaker 8: could be, you know what I mean, I'd listen to
- 40:02Speaker 8: that argument. You know, And we have no way of
- 40:04Speaker 8: knowing for sure because Bill's not here anymore obviously, But
- 40:06Speaker 8: I think he might have treated Barmore a little bit.
- 40:09Speaker 3: I think I do too.
- 40:10Speaker 8: I mean, and I don't think he broke the bank either.
- 40:12Speaker 8: I think that was a really team friendly deal.
- 40:14Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 40:14Speaker 5: No, I think that's a good point, Paul. That's what
- 40:15Speaker 5: I mean. That that's been the hard thing is like
- 40:18Speaker 5: I don't really nextinarily. I mean, there was a time
- 40:20Speaker 5: last year when I was saying, like and when you
- 40:22Speaker 5: I mean, he's good, but I don't, I mean, Duggar,
- 40:24Speaker 5: he's good. But but Barmore, You're right, like maybe he would.
- 40:27Speaker 8: And I think the state of the offensive line would
- 40:29Speaker 8: have led to an extension because I feel like he
- 40:32Speaker 8: might have looked at it and said, we got to
- 40:33Speaker 8: somebody gotta have somebody to bank or this thing. David
- 40:36Speaker 8: Andrews is going to be around forever. Yeah.
- 40:38Speaker 3: I just want to let everyone know coming up at
- 40:40Speaker 3: around one o'clock. We're going to be joined by Field
- 40:42Speaker 3: Yates from ESPN. Obviously, he was a NonStop on ESPN
- 40:48Speaker 3: on TV over the weekend with draft and you know
- 40:51Speaker 3: he's dived as deep into the draft as anyone over there.
- 40:56Speaker 3: So we'll get his opinion. He's got his new England roots.
- 40:59Speaker 5: We talk to him at the combarm.
- 41:00Speaker 3: Yeah, always interested to see what the Patriots are doing
- 41:04Speaker 3: and hear from him from his perspective. So we'll do
- 41:06Speaker 3: that around one o'clock or so. So that's that'll be.
- 41:10Speaker 3: That'll be fun. You guys have your questions ready for him.
- 41:13Speaker 8: Yes, I have one question for him.
- 41:15Speaker 3: You do nothing? How did you get in the business.
- 41:19Speaker 8: We've talked about that before though.
- 41:21Speaker 7: Okay, all right, can we get Mina Chimes.
- 41:24Speaker 6: I've tried to get Mina Chimes. She's a tough get,
- 41:27Speaker 6: is that right. She's a busy gal for Taylor Kyles.
- 41:30Speaker 6: That's true, that's true, and I hold out against her.
- 41:34Speaker 7: Maybe you need to work on your DM game.
- 41:37Speaker 6: I don't think Jess would like that they've got a
- 41:38Speaker 6: DM game. Being bad is a good thing.
- 41:40Speaker 3: Yeah all right, Yeah, so that's that's good news. Christian
- 41:44Speaker 3: Barmore locked up. Now, you know, I think in terms
- 41:49Speaker 3: of like his potential and you compare it to Dougger,
- 41:53Speaker 3: he's bar more special. I think, Yeah, Dougger's good by
- 41:58Speaker 3: I ain't bar more special. I hope that now that
- 42:01Speaker 3: he's got his bag, that he keeps up that you know,
- 42:05Speaker 3: energy that he's shown the last couple of years.
- 42:08Speaker 5: He doesn't know any other way, Fred, I mean, you
- 42:09Speaker 5: just talked to him, just stand at his locker and
- 42:11Speaker 5: he's just can't He's got a move. He is just
- 42:13Speaker 5: that kind of guy.
- 42:13Speaker 8: So he seems to really love football too.
- 42:15Speaker 6: I've had a lot of conversations with him about like technique,
- 42:19Speaker 6: like real football minutia type of stuff, and he's he's
- 42:22Speaker 6: a craftsman, like he works on it like you can tell.
- 42:25Speaker 6: And I think he really really likes DeMarcus Covington a lot.
- 42:29Speaker 3: So whatever the knock on him coming out of Alabama was,
- 42:31Speaker 3: it seems that that's gone away.
- 42:33Speaker 5: Oh boy. Yeah, remember Warren Sap. Warren Sap had a
- 42:35Speaker 5: whole thing of like I wouldn't draft this guy with
- 42:37Speaker 5: a ten foot poll Yeah that makes sense.
- 42:39Speaker 6: But yeah, I think, you know, defensively, I was looking
- 42:43Speaker 6: around at some of the the other depth charts on
- 42:46Speaker 6: our lads and things like that. And honestly, if Christian
- 42:50Speaker 6: Gonzales and is as good as he was for the
- 42:52Speaker 6: month that he was healthy last year, the Patriots defense
- 42:55Speaker 6: is as good as anybody on paper, you know, just
- 42:57Speaker 6: in terms of how deep they are, and you really
- 42:59Speaker 6: think so yeah, I really think so yeah. I mean
- 43:01Speaker 6: they have assuming Judoon comes back and is on this team.
- 43:06Speaker 6: You know, Judan, Barmore, Gonzales are potentially three Pro Bowl
- 43:11Speaker 6: caliber players.
- 43:11Speaker 3: Are you factoring in the loss of one Bill Belichick?
- 43:15Speaker 6: Maybe not as much as you but yeah, I mean,
- 43:18Speaker 6: like obviously that's gonna have a game plan impact on them.
- 43:21Speaker 6: I'm more talking about from like a talent personnel standpoint, yeah,
- 43:25Speaker 6: because they still have a lot of like those lunch
- 43:27Speaker 6: payal Belichick guys to to supplement the star players, you know,
- 43:31Speaker 6: to Vibe Bentley, Dietrich Wise, you know those types of
- 43:34Speaker 6: guys too. So it's not just the high end talent
- 43:37Speaker 6: like maybe other teams. You could argue you have a
- 43:39Speaker 6: little bit more of that, like you know, elite, elite,
- 43:41Speaker 6: blue chip talent. But if Barmore continues to ascend and
- 43:44Speaker 6: Gonzalez is as good as he was last year when
- 43:46Speaker 6: he was healthy. Then I mean I take the Patriots defense.
- 43:49Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, me too. I mean I think you know,
- 43:51Speaker 5: we had we did a video yesterday just some of
- 43:53Speaker 5: the interesting stuff. It is like some of the positions
- 43:55Speaker 5: they maybe didn't necessarily address. It kind of puts a
- 43:57Speaker 5: spotlight a little bit on you know, like a mop
- 43:59Speaker 5: who didn't draft the free safety type. We kind of
- 44:02Speaker 5: talked about Kevin Harris on the offensive side of the ball,
- 44:04Speaker 5: you know, didn't really draft a running back, so you know,
- 44:08Speaker 5: and I think Isaiah Bolden and this Marcellus Dial, I'm
- 44:11Speaker 5: really interested to see them because I think we all,
- 44:13Speaker 5: you know, kind of feel like they could use another
- 44:15Speaker 5: corner like in the mix and.
- 44:17Speaker 6: Yeah, them and Alex Austin, you know, add those If
- 44:20Speaker 6: they can get an outside corner that can play some
- 44:22Speaker 6: snaps out of those three guys, then.
- 44:26Speaker 3: Inst to keep an eye on shoulder shoulder.
- 44:29Speaker 8: Gonzales torn Labor feel so as.
- 44:32Speaker 3: Long as it wasn't those hips the hipstone live hips
- 44:35Speaker 3: don't live, no, And you know, in all seriousness, the
- 44:38Speaker 3: thing I loved about Gonzales is, you know, like Malcolm
- 44:42Speaker 3: Butler was feisty, He was a competitor and he you
- 44:44Speaker 3: know he but Gonzalez is an athlete, like he does
- 44:48Speaker 3: it with with talent, Stean Gilmore like he yeah, Stefan
- 44:52Speaker 3: Gilmore or dare I say Tylaw? Like he stays with
- 44:56Speaker 3: a guy because of his talent, not because of his feistiness.
- 44:59Speaker 3: You know, he's able to mirror a guy. And to me,
- 45:02Speaker 3: that's I've always thought that's a rare skill in the NFL.
- 45:05Speaker 3: Like to be able to be that kind of mirror
- 45:07Speaker 3: corner in this league is it's a rare commodity. And
- 45:11Speaker 3: when you get one of those guys, you don't let
- 45:13Speaker 3: him go.
- 45:14Speaker 5: It's recovery too. I mean I remember in those couple
- 45:15Speaker 5: of games. That's what stood out to me was just
- 45:17Speaker 5: even when he was kind of taking a half false step,
- 45:19Speaker 5: like he's good enough that he can recover from that stuff.
- 45:22Speaker 5: So very excited. I mean there's a lot to I mean,
- 45:25Speaker 5: Andy was saying that he's excited. You know, I tweeted out,
- 45:27Speaker 5: I'm like Jesus, how things have changed. I mean, but
- 45:30Speaker 5: I think he's right. You know, there's a lot there's
- 45:32Speaker 5: some talent coming back, guys that were good. And then
- 45:34Speaker 5: I mean, you just you've got a whole bunch of
- 45:36Speaker 5: new offensive pieces that it's gonna be fun to just
- 45:38Speaker 5: get out there, see what they look like, see what
- 45:39Speaker 5: they move like. And I'm just excited to see what
- 45:42Speaker 5: Joel Milton looks like.
- 45:46Speaker 6: Yeah, with Gonzo, his speed is I'm just going to
- 45:52Speaker 6: for I'm just right over that his speed in a
- 45:57Speaker 6: straight line, like, I mean, he ran a four to three,
- 45:59Speaker 6: so it's obviously there. But he plays to the four
- 46:02Speaker 6: to three dial, no Gonzales. Yeah, it dialed though it
- 46:05Speaker 6: ran like in the mid four force. It has some
- 46:08Speaker 6: length and some ball skills. So you had thirty one
- 46:11Speaker 6: pass breakups in college, you know, which is a pretty
- 46:13Speaker 6: big number for a college corner So there's some there's
- 46:16Speaker 6: some talent there in terms of finding the ball, like
- 46:18Speaker 6: their typical type of guy that can play man and
- 46:21Speaker 6: find the football and do that kind of thing.
- 46:23Speaker 5: I'd say that's that's like a thing to watch for me.
- 46:25Speaker 5: You know this summer is who can a third cornerback
- 46:28Speaker 5: kind of emerge? And you know, I still have a cornerback.
- 46:31Speaker 5: Yeah he's still there, but I still think there's questions
- 46:33Speaker 5: in the slot. I mean, you know, we can Marcus
- 46:35Speaker 5: Jones stay healthy? Can he play the slot full time.
- 46:37Speaker 5: I mean, so I definitely think. I mean, but as
- 46:40Speaker 5: Evan pointed out on our little video shoot, maybe somebody
- 46:43Speaker 5: like Gilmore or you know, that kind of addition could
- 46:45Speaker 5: still possibly happen.
- 46:46Speaker 6: Now, Yeah, if you get the third corner, if you
- 46:49Speaker 6: have an outside corner that can play a lot and
- 46:52Speaker 6: you know, let's call it sixty five percent of the
- 46:54Speaker 6: snaps that you feel really good about, and you have
- 46:56Speaker 6: Jonathan Jones more back inside to Nickel like, then I
- 47:00Speaker 6: think that's probably their best combination. Nothing against Marcus Jones,
- 47:03Speaker 6: but I think that's probably their best combination. Is if
- 47:07Speaker 6: in Alex Austin, Isaiah Olden dial someone like that emerges
- 47:11Speaker 6: as the Jason mccorthy type, and then that allows Jones
- 47:14Speaker 6: to case.
- 47:17Speaker 3: I'd love to go back to where when we were
- 47:19Speaker 3: like a man team on defense, you know, not have
- 47:22Speaker 3: to do zone play like a man. No, but like
- 47:24Speaker 3: you know, the more you can put one on one coverage,
- 47:26Speaker 3: the more it frees up your defense to do other things.
- 47:29Speaker 3: And you know, I loved if Gilmore, you know, someone
- 47:33Speaker 3: of that ilk came into.
- 47:36Speaker 8: Not as much anymore.
- 47:37Speaker 6: In yeah, you lose the compic formula situation too, not
- 47:41Speaker 6: that that matters for the Patriots, but it matters for
- 47:43Speaker 6: for a lot of teams, So that could maybe make
- 47:46Speaker 6: it a little bit more money.
- 47:48Speaker 3: Was he being asked to be number one in Carolina?
- 47:50Speaker 3: Where when he got.
- 47:51Speaker 8: Traded down there?
- 47:52Speaker 3: But he got traded after Diggs got hurt?
- 47:54Speaker 8: He was there number one? Are you talking about Carolina? Dallas?
- 47:57Speaker 3: His last stop was Dallas, y Yeah, so he wasn't
- 48:00Speaker 3: the number one and down I know that. Yeah, Okay,
- 48:02Speaker 3: all right, all right, Well, well.
- 48:05Speaker 8: At this point I would say that he's probably not
- 48:07Speaker 8: going to sign until camp, Yeah, because he would he
- 48:09Speaker 8: would have signed initially if he got like maybe years
- 48:13Speaker 8: in money, But now that he's not going to get that,
- 48:16Speaker 8: he's probably like, yeah, I don't want to hear any
- 48:19Speaker 8: of the spring crap right in camp if he's looking
- 48:22Speaker 8: for that one year reset coming back here where he
- 48:24Speaker 8: knows the system and it's a pretty good defense around
- 48:27Speaker 8: him and he knows Gerrod, Like I could see that
- 48:29Speaker 8: him thinking, well, that's probably where.
- 48:31Speaker 5: It's not bills off season anymore. It's it's.
- 48:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 48:35Speaker 8: My initial impression would be there's no chance, But because
- 48:38Speaker 8: of Gerard, I think there is a chance. I think
- 48:41Speaker 8: he would you know, depending on his relationship with Mayo,
- 48:44Speaker 8: how he felt about Mayo, I do I don't even
- 48:47Speaker 8: see him doing it. The bigger question is not going
- 48:49Speaker 8: to get money. I just would think that he would
- 48:51Speaker 8: rather go to a contender.
- 48:52Speaker 5: The bigger question, just for me, outside of specifically to Gilmore,
- 48:55Speaker 5: is just you know what guys on the roster that
- 48:57Speaker 5: are younger, that haven't really gotten a chance yet, maybe
- 48:59Speaker 5: like a map does this administration look at and see,
- 49:03Speaker 5: let's get we want to get this guy involved. We
- 49:04Speaker 5: want you know, they've they've talked a lot about that,
- 49:07Speaker 5: drafting guys, allowing the coaches to work with them, allowing
- 49:09Speaker 5: them to play. So you know that's that's in the
- 49:12Speaker 5: Kevin Harris like is you know, do they see him
- 49:14Speaker 5: and say, man, if he wasn't behind Ezekiel Elliot last year,
- 49:17Speaker 5: he could have really gotten a chance.
- 49:18Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 49:18Speaker 5: I mean, I don't really feel passionate about any of
- 49:21Speaker 5: those guys. I mean, to be honest, I'm curious about
- 49:23Speaker 5: Mapa though.
- 49:24Speaker 8: What about on White?
- 49:26Speaker 6: Like I feel like, yeah, White is one of those
- 49:28Speaker 6: guys that you just drafted him in the second round,
- 49:30Speaker 6: Like you should hope to think that, you know, we
- 49:32Speaker 6: keep talking about edge rusher to jump, Well, there's your
- 49:35Speaker 6: edge rusher.
- 49:36Speaker 5: Does he kind of play in the guy role? Do
- 49:38Speaker 5: they move him more to more hand down defensive end
- 49:41Speaker 5: kind of thing? And and kind of quit it with
- 49:43Speaker 5: the with the standing up or is armand Watson there?
- 49:46Speaker 5: And ke On White continues, I don't think if him
- 49:49Speaker 5: as an edge us I don't. I think of him
- 49:50Speaker 5: as a guy down.
- 49:52Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, I think that's where he's been his
- 49:54Speaker 6: best wer. Yeah, but I wonder if you know, he
- 49:57Speaker 6: comes in a little lighter, you know, and like you
- 49:59Speaker 6: say him, why don't you drop ten pounds of you
- 50:02Speaker 6: know whatever?
- 50:03Speaker 5: And you can sell me on it with the outside
- 50:05Speaker 5: linebacker depth because there's really nobody. So if you if
- 50:07Speaker 5: you want to come back and tell me Cam White's
- 50:09Speaker 5: going to be a pure outside linebacker this year, like.
- 50:11Speaker 8: Because I just don't think that he's like a block
- 50:13Speaker 8: eating three four end. No, No, he's I think that's
- 50:15Speaker 8: what Bill wanted him to do last year. I mean
- 50:17Speaker 8: in camp, you remember how many times he would be
- 50:19Speaker 8: out there and it just didn't seem like it.
- 50:21Speaker 6: I just think he's too small for that. Like I
- 50:23Speaker 6: think that you know, his his strains are obviously like
- 50:26Speaker 6: his first step in his athleticism, and I think he's
- 50:29Speaker 6: a little bit too clunky to play up on his feet.
- 50:32Speaker 6: But if you had him lose some weight and maybe
- 50:34Speaker 6: go about it a little bit differently where it's like
- 50:36Speaker 6: we're trying to thin out a little bit, then maybe
- 50:38Speaker 6: he could he could.
- 50:39Speaker 8: Do it a little bit better.
- 50:40Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a good one.
- 50:41Speaker 3: Yeah, all right. Eight five five PATS five hundred is
- 50:44Speaker 3: the Aceticket hotline web radio at patries dot com is
- 50:46Speaker 3: the email address Carries in New Hampshire. What's up? Carry? Hey? Carry?
- 50:52Speaker 11: Hello, Hey, Hey, Okay, I wanted to tell you guy,
- 50:58Speaker 11: you've taught me most of what I know about football.
- 51:01Speaker 3: I'm sorry you don't know anything.
- 51:03Speaker 11: Long time listener, but I do have to tell you
- 51:06Speaker 11: I don't normally listen live today. I just need to
- 51:13Speaker 11: tell Paul and Fred to take a deep breath because
- 51:17Speaker 11: we don't want to listen to that.
- 51:18Speaker 3: On this Okay, I'm sorry, I'm sorry too.
- 51:21Speaker 11: Much, arguing, too much arguing. Anyway, that being said, I'm
- 51:27Speaker 11: excited about what's coming this year and continue to listen.
- 51:33Speaker 11: You guys are the only ones I listen to and
- 51:35Speaker 11: thank you for teaching me everything.
- 51:38Speaker 3: That I know. Okay, well, what makes you excited before
- 51:40Speaker 3: you go anything? In particular? You said you're excited about it.
- 51:46Speaker 11: Just to change, I think, just to change everywhere from
- 51:50Speaker 11: the top down.
- 51:52Speaker 3: Okay, new start.
- 51:54Speaker 11: You know, I mean, you know they're not going to
- 51:58Speaker 11: hit on every single one of these picks. And I'm
- 52:01Speaker 11: okay with that.
- 52:02Speaker 3: Yeah, good because they won't.
- 52:06Speaker 11: Just wait and see how it all all right?
- 52:09Speaker 3: Thanks Carrie, Carrie New Hampshire not happy with the arguing. Yeah, okay,
- 52:14Speaker 3: this is an argument free zone.
- 52:15Speaker 8: She wants no, that's what we will get.
- 52:20Speaker 3: Mike and Bell. Rica writes in starting up by saying,
- 52:23Speaker 3: I love this draft. Drake was my guy. I got
- 52:25Speaker 3: to meet him in Detroit and I'm thrilled we got him.
- 52:28Speaker 3: My only issue is this felt like the same as always,
- 52:32Speaker 3: albeit with more offense. We moved off the consensus guy
- 52:35Speaker 3: of Mitchell. I know, I know he has diabetes. He's
- 52:40Speaker 3: a monster. Why can't he go drunk driving?
- 52:44Speaker 1: Like?
- 52:44Speaker 3: Well? Come? Then we reached on day three projected right
- 52:48Speaker 3: tackle who we have to play out of position because
- 52:51Speaker 3: of a whole we decided to not seriously fill at
- 52:55Speaker 3: previous opportunities. I like Poke and I really love Baker
- 52:59Speaker 3: and I hope takes the position change well. But this
- 53:02Speaker 3: didn't seem like we drafted all two differently than when
- 53:05Speaker 3: we had Bill. What am I missing?
- 53:06Speaker 8: Really?
- 53:07Speaker 6: We drafted two receivers in all offense.
- 53:10Speaker 7: Like literally, I feel like it would have been maybe
- 53:13Speaker 7: four defensive players in three offense or maybe four, maybe
- 53:16Speaker 7: five and two.
- 53:16Speaker 3: I mean, I think like he's recognizing that we went offense,
- 53:21Speaker 3: but I think I think the style is what he's
- 53:23Speaker 3: talking about.
- 53:24Speaker 8: Like maybe, yeah, I guess I could hear that with
- 53:27Speaker 8: the email.
- 53:28Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 53:28Speaker 6: I feel like when you draft seven of eight offensive players,
- 53:31Speaker 6: that is something that hell would freeze over before Bill
- 53:34Speaker 6: Belichick did that.
- 53:35Speaker 3: No, but but it's it's not it's not the fact
- 53:38Speaker 3: that they did offense. Its defense. It's it's the quality
- 53:42Speaker 3: or you know, players that they could have had verus
- 53:44Speaker 3: who they took.
- 53:45Speaker 8: But to you or to the email, that's what That's
- 53:48Speaker 8: the point.
- 53:49Speaker 6: Yeah, And I just I'm I ranked these players as
- 53:52Speaker 6: much as anybody, but like it's just my opinion, you know,
- 53:56Speaker 6: And like when I see these draft grades and stuff
- 53:58Speaker 6: like that, I'm like, Okay, so you're going off of
- 54:00Speaker 6: your pre draft opinion of these players. Which is all
- 54:03Speaker 6: you can do. But what if you're wrong?
- 54:05Speaker 3: Yeah, well you got to remember we're drafting at the
- 54:08Speaker 3: top of every round for the most part, rather than
- 54:11Speaker 3: middle or bottom, so that that changes who you have
- 54:15Speaker 3: an opportunity to get.
- 54:16Speaker 4: You know.
- 54:17Speaker 7: Also, I think, for whatever reason we still haven't heard yet,
- 54:19Speaker 7: but Adie Mitchell, a lot of teams kept passing.
- 54:22Speaker 3: People passed up so like the.
- 54:24Speaker 7: Bills could have taken him, the Chiefs could have taken
- 54:26Speaker 7: him like they didn't. So I think it's clearly a
- 54:29Speaker 7: reason that all those teams skipped him.
- 54:31Speaker 3: Into the state and he could end up being the
- 54:33Speaker 3: best of the bunch. You never know.
- 54:34Speaker 5: Yeah, George hung over our head for all eternity, could
- 54:41Speaker 5: have had AJ Brown.
- 54:42Speaker 3: I know, I know.
- 54:43Speaker 6: That's my that's my biggest fear about this draft is
- 54:46Speaker 6: you really have I take Adie Mitchell out of it
- 54:49Speaker 6: because he wasn't on their board, like they passed on
- 54:51Speaker 6: him multiple times. He wasn't there, like he wasn't going
- 54:53Speaker 6: to be a Patriot. But Xavierly get Lad McConkie, Troy Franklin.
- 54:58Speaker 6: If they looked at those three guys versus the two
- 55:00Speaker 6: guys they actually did draft, that's gonna be three years
- 55:04Speaker 6: from now if it's gonna be George Pickens Taekwon Thornton
- 55:07Speaker 6: all over again.
- 55:07Speaker 7: Like, do you think they viewed Lad McConkie though, was
- 55:10Speaker 7: too similar to Pop Douglas Like.
- 55:13Speaker 6: No, I mean maybe, but I think they're different, very
- 55:16Speaker 6: different players. Like Lad mcconkee is a is a deep threat,
- 55:19Speaker 6: like he's just he's a you want to small guys.
- 55:22Speaker 6: I think it was more about the size in the
- 55:24Speaker 6: play strength, yeah, than necessarily stylistically. But you know, Lad
- 55:29Speaker 6: mccakie is one hundred and eighty six pounds.
- 55:31Speaker 5: You know, that's what Baker are both like six to
- 55:35Speaker 5: one and change and over two hundred pounds. I mean
- 55:37Speaker 5: they're both pretty thick dudes that you know.
- 55:40Speaker 7: How much does Pop Way.
- 55:44Speaker 5: Like one hundred and eighty pounds, Yeah.
- 55:47Speaker 6: Similar to yes, less I think best Maybe Pop Pop
- 55:52Speaker 6: small too, Yeah, Pops short, but.
- 55:55Speaker 5: It's a good compliment to the other. Two guys talked
- 55:57Speaker 5: about inside outside and outside and an inside.
- 55:59Speaker 6: That's one thing I've thought about it is just in
- 56:01Speaker 6: talking about these receivers and stuff like that. You know,
- 56:04Speaker 6: everybody's like, well they don't have anybody with any real speed.
- 56:06Speaker 6: Well they have Pop Douglas. Like Pop Pop Douglas is
- 56:10Speaker 6: a fast guy. Like even down the field, he's a
- 56:13Speaker 6: fast guy. I mean, we saw it last year that
- 56:15Speaker 6: he's got legit game speed. So I know everybody's well,
- 56:19Speaker 6: maybe this is finally taekwon Thornton's chance.
- 56:21Speaker 5: Like no, no, and to that point, that's that's a
- 56:26Speaker 5: can can Javon Baker get off the line? You know,
- 56:29Speaker 5: like that's a big question for me. How does he
- 56:31Speaker 5: look against you know, going up against Gonzales in practice
- 56:34Speaker 5: when we see these guys like.
- 56:36Speaker 8: Straightjack fair match.
- 56:38Speaker 3: When Drake May finally becomes the starting quarterback, who will
- 56:42Speaker 3: be his binkie out of this group?
- 56:45Speaker 5: Yeah, Jaylen Polk. I mean, and I think Pop Pop
- 56:47Speaker 5: would have a level of that too.
- 56:48Speaker 8: I would hope, you know, just with his you know
- 56:51Speaker 8: about not signing guys to Mario, Douglas is a guy
- 56:55Speaker 8: that Bill wouldn't give a second contract. Oh yeah, oh yeah,
- 56:57Speaker 8: like I six rounder every where I created him. Now
- 57:01Speaker 8: someone's going to overpay him quote but you know, overpay him.
- 57:05Speaker 8: We got the best years out of him.
- 57:07Speaker 3: They'll let him go.
- 57:07Speaker 7: I was gonna say, like, I just why do if
- 57:09Speaker 7: you pour so much into that and he becomes good,
- 57:12Speaker 7: why would you let him walk?
- 57:13Speaker 8: And he'll think that the first four years will be
- 57:16Speaker 8: the best four years of his career and he's going
- 57:19Speaker 8: to go down.
- 57:19Speaker 3: Yeah at that size, that skill set. Yeah, they let on, right,
- 57:24Speaker 3: they let it on.
- 57:25Speaker 5: Watch want to know one of them?
- 57:26Speaker 3: Right.
- 57:27Speaker 6: That's a big concern about Papa is the concussions that
- 57:30Speaker 6: have already added up, and the injuries and all that
- 57:32Speaker 6: kind of stuff. But if he doesn't have to be
- 57:34Speaker 6: a high volume guy like last year they were trying
- 57:36Speaker 6: to feed him the ball because he's the best player
- 57:37Speaker 6: on the field.
- 57:38Speaker 8: He got a stretch there where he was getting a
- 57:40Speaker 8: ton of targets.
- 57:40Speaker 3: Right, All right, Uh, we'll take a break from this
- 57:42Speaker 3: conversation because joining us now is Field Yates of ESPN. Field,
- 57:47Speaker 3: can you hear me?
- 57:49Speaker 12: You're okay? What's going on?
- 57:51Speaker 3: How are you?
- 57:52Speaker 12: I'm great? Thank you? Thanks for having me on exciting
- 57:54Speaker 12: times right now in New England.
- 57:56Speaker 8: Seeing you have a lot of rich mahogany behind you.
- 58:00Speaker 8: I barn it.
- 58:00Speaker 12: I took it off of a Reese's paycheck. That's how
- 58:02Speaker 12: I paid for it.
- 58:04Speaker 8: I know how that works.
- 58:05Speaker 3: Field. It's good talking with you. Of course, you've got
- 58:09Speaker 3: your New England roots. But now you're covering the league
- 58:12Speaker 3: as a whole. But I'm sure that you always have
- 58:14Speaker 3: a keen eye as to what the Patriots are doing.
- 58:17Speaker 3: What was your opinion of how draft weekend turned out
- 58:21Speaker 3: for the Patriots.
- 58:22Speaker 12: Yeah, I think this has the weekend. This is the
- 58:23Speaker 12: potential to be the weekend.
- 58:25Speaker 13: And I know this is what everybody says about every draft,
- 58:27Speaker 13: but the potential to be the weekend to set the
- 58:29Speaker 13: course for the Patriots future. Drake May and I said
- 58:33Speaker 13: this from the moment that the draft order was set
- 58:36Speaker 13: for the non playoff teams, that there was no such
- 58:39Speaker 13: thing as a consolation prize amongst the top three quarterbacks.
- 58:42Speaker 8: The three months.
- 58:43Speaker 13: Between the end of the regular season and the start
- 58:46Speaker 13: of the NFL Draft, we're going to determine who went one, two,
- 58:49Speaker 13: and three. But I really felt strongly that all three
- 58:52Speaker 13: of them merited top three pick consideration, and depending on
- 58:56Speaker 13: the year, any of them could have easily been the
- 58:58Speaker 13: number one player in the entire draft. So the fact
- 59:01Speaker 13: that the Patriots stood at number three resisted the temptation
- 59:05Speaker 13: to move back, and I understand that temptation. There's evidence
- 59:08Speaker 13: that suggests that having a ton of extra draft capo,
- 59:11Speaker 13: it can be very, very valuable. But you know, there's
- 59:13Speaker 13: nothing more important in roster building in football than having
- 59:17Speaker 13: a quarterback who can make everything else go. And the
- 59:19Speaker 13: Patriots now have that in Drake May, and they use
- 59:22Speaker 13: six of their subsequent seven picks on offense, which was
- 59:25Speaker 13: a sign that, hey, we have the quarterback in place.
- 59:28Speaker 13: But it doesn't matter if you're the you know, if
- 59:30Speaker 13: you're a rookie quarterback, or if you're at the very
- 59:32Speaker 13: top of the food chain like Patrick Mahomes right now
- 59:35Speaker 13: for the Chiefs, We're going to continue to invest in
- 59:37Speaker 13: you because it's still the ultimate team sport and we
- 59:40Speaker 13: have a lot of work to do to help get
- 59:42Speaker 13: Drake May to where we believe he can get to.
- 59:45Speaker 3: Are you in the sit him for a while or
- 59:48Speaker 3: are you in the camp of he needs to get
- 59:50Speaker 3: right out there.
- 59:51Speaker 12: Yeah, I'm okay with sitting Drake May for a little
- 59:53Speaker 12: while here.
- 59:54Speaker 13: And maybe I'm a little bit too old school for
- 59:55Speaker 13: the modern era of the NFL, but I believe that
- 59:59Speaker 13: one of the reasons in which we see young quarterbacks
- 1:00:01Speaker 13: play so often is that there's pressure for these gms
- 1:00:05Speaker 13: and head coaches that they understand that you know, they
- 1:00:08Speaker 13: only have so much of a leash to work with here.
- 1:00:11Speaker 13: We see so much turnover in those positions around the NFL.
- 1:00:15Speaker 13: I don't think that's the case here with the Patriots,
- 1:00:17Speaker 13: though obviously with Gerrod Mayo and Elliott Wolf both in
- 1:00:19Speaker 13: their first years in their respective positions.
- 1:00:22Speaker 12: This does align as an.
- 1:00:23Speaker 13: Opportunity for a team to say, if the quarterback isn't ready,
- 1:00:27Speaker 13: or if they feel like playing Drake may right out
- 1:00:31Speaker 13: of the shoots can do equally as much bad as
- 1:00:34Speaker 13: it can good, then maybe it's a chance for Jacobe
- 1:00:37Speaker 13: Brissett to start some number of games to begin this
- 1:00:40Speaker 13: season one, two, ten, seventeen. I don't know the answer,
- 1:00:44Speaker 13: to be specific, but I'm an advocate for it. If
- 1:00:47Speaker 13: the player is not fully ready, it's gonna be really hard.
- 1:00:50Speaker 13: If Drake may does some of the stuff that I ankisobey,
- 1:00:52Speaker 13: he'll do. I know you guys have all watched him
- 1:00:55Speaker 13: endlessly right now, but wait till first Patriots training camp
- 1:00:59Speaker 13: practice is open to the public, because the fans are
- 1:01:01Speaker 13: going to see up close and personal what kind of
- 1:01:03Speaker 13: a special.
- 1:01:04Speaker 12: Player this is.
- 1:01:05Speaker 13: And you're gonna have moments during training camp they're gonna
- 1:01:07Speaker 13: make you say wow.
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: Now you're talking about Joe Milton, right. I've always.
- 1:01:13Speaker 13: That's but Drake's gonna have enough moments they're going to
- 1:01:17Speaker 13: a wow you that people are gonna say, how can
- 1:01:19Speaker 13: we not.
- 1:01:19Speaker 12: Play this kid? Right away?
- 1:01:21Speaker 13: That being said, I do think there is something to
- 1:01:24Speaker 13: be learned in a young quarterbacks a trajectory from seeing
- 1:01:28Speaker 13: it from sideline view for a little bit. I'm not
- 1:01:31Speaker 13: talking about three years here, I'm talking about any three
- 1:01:33Speaker 13: games that might be what it takes for the Patriots
- 1:01:35Speaker 13: to feel like Drake May is more ready.
- 1:01:37Speaker 5: Phil, we talked to you, thanks for talking to us
- 1:01:39Speaker 5: at the combine and uh Elliot Wolf saying Patriots got
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: to weaponize their offense. What did you think of the
- 1:01:45Speaker 5: two picks there, Polk and Baker.
- 1:01:47Speaker 13: Yeah, If anybody here listens to the first Draft show,
- 1:01:50Speaker 13: thank you first of all, But second of all, you'll
- 1:01:53Speaker 13: know that Mel and I try to do our best
- 1:01:55Speaker 13: to not spend all day talking about just the guys
- 1:01:57Speaker 13: that will go at the very top of the draft,
- 1:01:59Speaker 13: and we did our favorites list.
- 1:02:01Speaker 12: It's our players.
- 1:02:02Speaker 13: It could go not in round one or most likely
- 1:02:04Speaker 13: not in round one that we just loved and loved
- 1:02:07Speaker 13: studying them love something about their game, loved everything about
- 1:02:10Speaker 13: their game. And the captain of my team was Jalen Polk.
- 1:02:13Speaker 13: I felt strongly about this player throughout the process. I
- 1:02:15Speaker 13: feel as though in a really really deep wide receiver
- 1:02:19Speaker 13: class he might have been the most underappreciated of all
- 1:02:22Speaker 13: of them. Jalen Polk is a dog. I know that's
- 1:02:25Speaker 13: kind of a cliche, but this kid is so tough.
- 1:02:27Speaker 13: He's got vice gript hands. The analogy that I continue
- 1:02:31Speaker 13: to use is he is a low post player in
- 1:02:34Speaker 13: the NBA twenty five years ago. Not a lot of flash,
- 1:02:37Speaker 13: a lot of substance. He just gets buckets. There's just
- 1:02:39Speaker 13: he just consistently moves the chains. And we talk about
- 1:02:42Speaker 13: great hands in football, and we think about highlight reel catches,
- 1:02:46Speaker 13: right the Odell Beckham junior catch with two fingertips, and
- 1:02:49Speaker 13: those are great, Those are remarkable. I'm not trying to
- 1:02:51Speaker 13: take away from the merits of those I think about
- 1:02:53Speaker 13: great hands. I think about and you guys have all
- 1:02:55Speaker 13: followed this team long enough to know, for you know,
- 1:02:58Speaker 13: there's some great, great players that have come through this
- 1:03:01Speaker 13: Patriots franchise for a long time, Guys who just consistently
- 1:03:04Speaker 13: made clutch. Troy Brown a great example there, right, Like
- 1:03:07Speaker 13: Troy just made catches reliably.
- 1:03:08Speaker 3: Yeah, the ball in his.
- 1:03:10Speaker 12: Back hip, he just he made the catch.
- 1:03:12Speaker 13: It wasn't necessarily these catches that gets you on the
- 1:03:15Speaker 13: Sports Enter Top ten, but rather just clutch production plays.
- 1:03:18Speaker 13: And I thought Jalen Polk just made catches consistently, really
- 1:03:22Speaker 13: good body control as well. One of my favorite players, truly,
- 1:03:25Speaker 13: one of my favorite players in the entire class.
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: Will you talk about guys like Troy Brown and Edelman
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: and Welker, guys that just moved the chain consistently. I
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: felt all those guys had very, very high football IQs.
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: You know, do you have any indication of Poke's IQ
- 1:03:43Speaker 3: when it comes to football?
- 1:03:45Speaker 13: Yeah, the IQ and the character are a plus, I
- 1:03:48Speaker 13: mean outstanding. That's part of the consideration when you're sitting
- 1:03:52Speaker 13: there at thirty seven, I know they were thirty four
- 1:03:55Speaker 13: before they moved back, is that the board was kind
- 1:03:57Speaker 13: of wide open there, right. You had a bunch of
- 1:03:59Speaker 13: different wider seats that could have merited consideration right there,
- 1:04:02Speaker 13: and they ended up adding some extra draft capital and
- 1:04:05Speaker 13: then uh and then taking Jalen Polk. I believe was
- 1:04:07Speaker 13: it the fourth that they got in the deal that
- 1:04:09Speaker 13: they used on uh.
- 1:04:12Speaker 12: Baker as well.
- 1:04:12Speaker 8: Yeah, is that correct? One? Yeah?
- 1:04:14Speaker 13: I have to two hundred and fifty seven pick. Some
- 1:04:16Speaker 13: of it's still blur to me. I know they gave
- 1:04:18Speaker 13: it a fifth to La and picked up the force.
- 1:04:20Speaker 13: That was where they got Javon Baker, but a third
- 1:04:22Speaker 13: and seventh pick, Like, there are some real good candidates
- 1:04:25Speaker 13: to take besides Jalen Polk.
- 1:04:27Speaker 12: The thirty seven was a signed of not just the
- 1:04:29Speaker 12: skill set.
- 1:04:30Speaker 13: Physically, but also the mentality, the IQ, the person, the character.
- 1:04:35Speaker 13: They have a young quarterback now in Drake May, and
- 1:04:38Speaker 13: you want to make sure that you support him with
- 1:04:39Speaker 13: the right people. We think about that if the coach,
- 1:04:41Speaker 13: the offensive coordinator, you know, the you know, the position coach,
- 1:04:45Speaker 13: they'll be working with you name it. But some of
- 1:04:47Speaker 13: the people as well on the roster. What kind of
- 1:04:49Speaker 13: guys do you want to have around your young quarterback?
- 1:04:51Speaker 13: They're going to help elevate him in the same way
- 1:04:53Speaker 13: that he can help elevate them. And I feel like
- 1:04:55Speaker 13: Jalen Polk is like that. I had a chance. I
- 1:04:58Speaker 13: loved him throughout the process. I went to Washington prote
- 1:05:00Speaker 13: got a chance to see him up close and personal,
- 1:05:03Speaker 13: and him and Roma Dunze, who of course went ninth
- 1:05:05Speaker 13: to the Bears, like those are truly special young men
- 1:05:08Speaker 13: as well, the kind of guys that the minute they
- 1:05:10Speaker 13: walk into a room, they kind of changed the chemistry
- 1:05:13Speaker 13: of it. So that was a big ad for the Patriots.
- 1:05:15Speaker 13: You know, I saw the people. There were some belly aching.
- 1:05:19Speaker 13: Apparently Jalen Pole went too high according to various boards.
- 1:05:22Speaker 13: I had him forty second on my board, and I
- 1:05:24Speaker 13: don't know, I have four hundred players graded, so you know,
- 1:05:27Speaker 13: forty two for me, it was right in line with
- 1:05:29Speaker 13: about where he went, and I thought this kid was
- 1:05:31Speaker 13: an absolute stud.
- 1:05:32Speaker 12: So I was great with that pick.
- 1:05:34Speaker 13: Javon Baker was that was a value based off my board.
- 1:05:37Speaker 13: He was believe, seventy second on my board, so that's
- 1:05:40Speaker 13: a you know, good value there in the fourth round.
- 1:05:43Speaker 13: But again this is in some ways it's just what
- 1:05:45Speaker 13: are we doing to empower our young quarterback? And we're
- 1:05:48Speaker 13: using six of our final eight selections excuse me, six
- 1:05:52Speaker 13: of our final seven on offensive pieces. Maybe you want
- 1:05:54Speaker 13: to call it five out of seven because one of
- 1:05:56Speaker 13: them was also a quarterback. But the point is the
- 1:05:59Speaker 13: Patriots went offense heavy throughout this draft, and while there's
- 1:06:02Speaker 13: still work to do, it's a good step forward to
- 1:06:04Speaker 13: help Drake may feel like, Hey, this team's trying to
- 1:06:06Speaker 13: surround me with the right pieces.
- 1:06:08Speaker 3: Ye Tamara Hi?
- 1:06:10Speaker 8: What was Tamara Hi?
- 1:06:12Speaker 7: What was your opinion of the Patriots double dipping at quarterback?
- 1:06:15Speaker 8: And what do you think of the pick?
- 1:06:17Speaker 6: Overall?
- 1:06:18Speaker 13: Joe was one of the most fascinating players, regardless of position,
- 1:06:21Speaker 13: in the entire class. I had so many conversations with
- 1:06:24Speaker 13: people during the process, saying where do you think Joe
- 1:06:26Speaker 13: Milton will go? And nobody could quite pinpoint what the
- 1:06:29Speaker 13: exact round or pick would be for Joe because some
- 1:06:32Speaker 13: of it with Joe during the evaluation is you saw
- 1:06:35Speaker 13: what you wanted to see, but if you tried, if
- 1:06:37Speaker 13: you took a big step back and just like took
- 1:06:39Speaker 13: all the various exposures and try to condense them down
- 1:06:42Speaker 13: into one single vision, what I saw was a player who,
- 1:06:45Speaker 13: if coached up correctly and not rushed into action, has
- 1:06:49Speaker 13: a chance to develop into something in the NFL.
- 1:06:51Speaker 12: What does that something mean?
- 1:06:52Speaker 13: I don't know, specifically becoming a starting quarterback after being
- 1:06:55Speaker 13: taken in the was it sixth round, fifth round again?
- 1:06:57Speaker 12: I'm sorry if I.
- 1:07:00Speaker 13: Patriots fans probably would disagree with this, but that's hard
- 1:07:03Speaker 13: to do, right.
- 1:07:03Speaker 12: I mean, you know, Tom Brady is one to one
- 1:07:05Speaker 12: in so many ways.
- 1:07:06Speaker 5: It's high.
- 1:07:09Speaker 13: Yeah, and that no one knowing becomes a starter from
- 1:07:12Speaker 13: one ninety two. It's only that one ninety nine spot
- 1:07:15Speaker 13: that matters. But Joe like the Patriots, and maybe this
- 1:07:19Speaker 13: is the Elliot wolf factor.
- 1:07:20Speaker 12: I don't know exactly why.
- 1:07:21Speaker 13: Well, who is you know, the most responsible for winning?
- 1:07:24Speaker 13: I guess I guess every pick is Elliott's most responsible for.
- 1:07:27Speaker 13: But I don't know which voices in the room were
- 1:07:29Speaker 13: also arguing for the sport of Joe Milton.
- 1:07:32Speaker 12: But they want to be a quarterback factory. You want
- 1:07:34Speaker 12: to have an arm in the pipeline every single year.
- 1:07:37Speaker 13: And you know, I feel like it's good business to
- 1:07:39Speaker 13: be drafted one almost every single year. We've seen teams
- 1:07:42Speaker 13: that have done so, and you're not going to hit
- 1:07:44Speaker 13: on all of them, but if you hit on one
- 1:07:45Speaker 13: or two of them every five or eight or ten years,
- 1:07:48Speaker 13: it's a great business. It's gonna help you out. So
- 1:07:50Speaker 13: Joe's so fascinating. He's an awesome kid, he's a great dude.
- 1:07:53Speaker 13: He's had to pay his dues. Joe has has not
- 1:07:55Speaker 13: been easy. He kind of came to Michigan with a
- 1:07:57Speaker 13: ton of fanfare and you know, the potential fourth star recruit.
- 1:08:02Speaker 12: He had to wait.
- 1:08:03Speaker 13: He basically had one year as a starting quarterback at
- 1:08:05Speaker 13: the college level, one full season. But I mean, as
- 1:08:08Speaker 13: we all know, massive arm, the most effortless arm I've
- 1:08:11Speaker 13: seen in person in the college ranks for quite some time.
- 1:08:14Speaker 13: I was good athlete too. An eighty plus yard touchdown
- 1:08:16Speaker 13: run last year. There's something to work with with Joe.
- 1:08:19Speaker 13: It's a project. But you know, in the sixth round,
- 1:08:21Speaker 13: those are the kind of sort of swing for the
- 1:08:23Speaker 13: fences type of picks that I think are worthwhile.
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: You know, some on this show feel like by getting
- 1:08:29Speaker 3: a guy like Joe Milton, who has such unique talents,
- 1:08:33Speaker 3: but it's you're creating maybe unnecessary noise for a first
- 1:08:37Speaker 3: round pick who also you need to develop any What
- 1:08:41Speaker 3: do you think about that? You know, I don't.
- 1:08:43Speaker 12: I don't think in the sixth round you're doing that.
- 1:08:45Speaker 12: That's my opinion. I understand that that that thought and
- 1:08:48Speaker 12: sentiment I've seen it. I didn't. I didn't interpret it that.
- 1:08:50Speaker 13: Way personally, And part of that I think is probably
- 1:08:54Speaker 13: like knowing the character of Drake a little bit, had
- 1:08:56Speaker 13: a chance to spend actually most of least until the
- 1:09:00Speaker 13: until the third pick, the evening prior to the draft,
- 1:09:04Speaker 13: right around the May family and competitions in the blood
- 1:09:08Speaker 13: of Drake May. I mean all three of his brothers
- 1:09:10Speaker 13: were there, and they were you could just see it,
- 1:09:12Speaker 13: right like I could. You could see the competitive fire
- 1:09:15Speaker 13: of the four of them. We're kind of horsing around
- 1:09:16Speaker 13: before the draft, having a blast, like getting ready for
- 1:09:18Speaker 13: this special moment. And I don't think Drake is going
- 1:09:21Speaker 13: to be bothered by the presence of somebody, right He
- 1:09:24Speaker 13: forever has had to kind of scratch and crawl and
- 1:09:27Speaker 13: claude to become, you know, kind of the person he
- 1:09:30Speaker 13: is today because he had three older brothers who were
- 1:09:32Speaker 13: all star athletes, I mean three who played Division one sports,
- 1:09:36Speaker 13: you know, national champions and basketball and baseball and you know,
- 1:09:40Speaker 13: a big programs. So I don't I'd be surprised if
- 1:09:43Speaker 13: this like created like this inherent I'm sure, you know,
- 1:09:48Speaker 13: sort of uncertainty for Drake. I feel like he'll he'll
- 1:09:51Speaker 13: he'll be cool with it.
- 1:09:51Speaker 12: I do.
- 1:09:52Speaker 13: I don't know that for a fact. I would guess
- 1:09:53Speaker 13: that though, but I was, I was more fun with it.
- 1:09:56Speaker 13: If it's a third round pick, then we got a problem. Yeah,
- 1:09:58Speaker 13: you know, but the sixth round, one ninety two, Like,
- 1:10:00Speaker 13: at some point there are only so many players on
- 1:10:02Speaker 13: the take. So I was, I thought that was a
- 1:10:03Speaker 13: you know, reasonable way to approach.
- 1:10:05Speaker 8: That pick field.
- 1:10:07Speaker 6: Bill Belichick was obviously on with Pat McAfee on ESPN
- 1:10:10Speaker 6: during the draft, and they showed a draft board it
- 1:10:13Speaker 6: seemed to be team needs that were behind him, and uh,
- 1:10:17Speaker 6: some people thought that maybe it was you know, I
- 1:10:19Speaker 6: weren't sure if those were actually Bill's needs for teams
- 1:10:21Speaker 6: or if like you guys had handed it. I'm not
- 1:10:23Speaker 6: sure if you knew, uh you know, who was the
- 1:10:26Speaker 6: one that was constructing that board. But it was just interesting,
- 1:10:28Speaker 6: you know, to see what he thought of the Patriots roster,
- 1:10:30Speaker 6: you know, obviously after he was just a coach here
- 1:10:32Speaker 6: not too long ago.
- 1:10:35Speaker 13: Yeah, I think those were I think so I know
- 1:10:38Speaker 13: that was my bore that you saw. They're my top
- 1:10:40Speaker 13: fifty and such. Are you asking about the cornerback things specifically, Evan.
- 1:10:44Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, the court It well was just obviously, you know,
- 1:10:47Speaker 6: weird to see corner back up there compared to the
- 1:10:50Speaker 6: receiver or something like that. But I was just wondering,
- 1:10:52Speaker 6: if you know, did it was did Bill have a
- 1:10:54Speaker 6: hand in those needs, because I'm interested, you know, about
- 1:10:56Speaker 6: his thoughts on the.
- 1:10:57Speaker 8: Roster that he just coached.
- 1:10:58Speaker 13: Obviously, yeah, I'm almost positive and I'll pull the file
- 1:11:01Speaker 13: up right now. I did not have cornerback on my
- 1:11:04Speaker 13: Patriots needless now I did not, So you know, I
- 1:11:07Speaker 13: think Bill had some influence there of how the needs
- 1:11:10Speaker 13: were conveyed because I just pulled it up that I
- 1:11:12Speaker 13: did not have. I had, believe it or not, quarterback,
- 1:11:15Speaker 13: wide receiver. So that for my needs Patriots.
- 1:11:19Speaker 3: So yeah, I don't know, but you know that.
- 1:11:23Speaker 13: So if you're if you're asking like, how could cornerback
- 1:11:26Speaker 13: be a need for the Patriots? The question might be
- 1:11:29Speaker 13: you have one, you know, potential megastar in Gonzo Uh,
- 1:11:33Speaker 13: you have another solid starter in Jonathan Jones. Obviously, you
- 1:11:37Speaker 13: have Marcus Jones hoping for you know, for for great
- 1:11:39Speaker 13: things in a bounce back year this year? Do you
- 1:11:42Speaker 13: need more size than that cornerback group, which, by the way,
- 1:11:44Speaker 13: they got Marcellus Diele, who I had. He had been
- 1:11:48Speaker 13: mentioned on the First Draft podcast as a value pick
- 1:11:51Speaker 13: about ten days prior to the draft being beginning, So
- 1:11:54Speaker 13: I was a fan of the player there, but I
- 1:11:56Speaker 13: personally felt like, you know, the needs were stronger, you know,
- 1:12:00Speaker 13: across the offensive line, I mean across the offensive board
- 1:12:02Speaker 13: pretty much, you know, wide receiver, offensive tackle, quarterback, and
- 1:12:05Speaker 13: any kind of supplementary offensive line.
- 1:12:07Speaker 8: Investments, field and your dealings with the various personnel guys.
- 1:12:12Speaker 8: I'm just wondering if there was a consensus about Jayden
- 1:12:16Speaker 8: Daniels and Drake May. You know, I know you you
- 1:12:18Speaker 8: started off, did not get that. Did you feel like
- 1:12:20Speaker 8: there were anybody that felt May was better than Daniels?
- 1:12:23Speaker 8: Like that's kind of That's kind of how we felt here,
- 1:12:26Speaker 8: you know, going in, and I don't know if we
- 1:12:28Speaker 8: convinced ourselves sort of knowing that we had the third pick,
- 1:12:31Speaker 8: but I like a lot about what Drake May does
- 1:12:34Speaker 8: over Jayden Daniels. I'm just curious what the you know,
- 1:12:37Speaker 8: some of the executives might have thought that you spoke to.
- 1:12:39Speaker 13: Yeah, it leaned towards Jayden versus Drake, but everybody also
- 1:12:45Speaker 13: has a little bit of a different perspective on this.
- 1:12:48Speaker 13: I would say the most popular refrain when assessing the
- 1:12:52Speaker 13: case for Drake over Jayden is that the long term
- 1:12:55Speaker 13: potential nutside Trader and I, by the way, I see
- 1:12:58Speaker 13: a plausible case that I had Jaden asquarterback to Drake's
- 1:13:00Speaker 13: quarterback three. But you know, I mean, guys, we're splitting
- 1:13:03Speaker 13: hairs here obviously, but you know, the physical skill set
- 1:13:07Speaker 13: in the upside that Drake brings to the table is ridiculous.
- 1:13:10Speaker 13: You just don't find guys with that kind of size,
- 1:13:14Speaker 13: that kind of in pocket mobility, that kind of out
- 1:13:16Speaker 13: out of pocket mobility, the ability to manipulate the defenders
- 1:13:20Speaker 13: with his eyes down the field. The arm strike is great, obviously,
- 1:13:24Speaker 13: the character is you know, off the charts great. You know,
- 1:13:27Speaker 13: the age I think is a factor as well. Durability
- 1:13:30Speaker 13: and if you're looking at through the New England lens, right,
- 1:13:32Speaker 13: you need a guy who's built for the weather. I
- 1:13:34Speaker 13: don't know exactly, but it feels like the Patriots over
- 1:13:37Speaker 13: the past couple of years have been absolutely I mean,
- 1:13:41Speaker 13: especially in the winter, it's just been terrible weather, game
- 1:13:43Speaker 13: after game after game, and you know, I mean there
- 1:13:46Speaker 13: are games in which was the Jets game last year
- 1:13:49Speaker 13: where it was like, what like five completions in the
- 1:13:51Speaker 13: first quarters or something ridiculous. You know, you got to
- 1:13:53Speaker 13: have a guy that has a rocket arm. You just
- 1:13:54Speaker 13: do big hands, rocket arm, can you know, take on
- 1:13:58Speaker 13: you know the weather, and then take on some hits
- 1:13:59Speaker 13: as well. So you know, to me, Drake may had
- 1:14:03Speaker 13: an easy case to be quarterback two in this class.
- 1:14:05Speaker 13: I'd say more than anything though that the line that
- 1:14:08Speaker 13: I used earlier was the most important one in my eyes,
- 1:14:10Speaker 13: which is, if there is no consolation prize of those three,
- 1:14:13Speaker 13: it's really a matter of how each of those three
- 1:14:16Speaker 13: teams developed them because as we know in the NFL,
- 1:14:19Speaker 13: you know, quarterbacks obviously don't always live up to expectations,
- 1:14:21Speaker 13: but sometimes the teams fail the player as well.
- 1:14:24Speaker 3: Yep, all right field, I really appreciate you joining us.
- 1:14:28Speaker 3: It was great to hear and talk with you. So
- 1:14:31Speaker 3: where can we get more of you on ESPN's What's
- 1:14:34Speaker 3: on the map for twenty twenty four for you?
- 1:14:37Speaker 13: Gosh, I hope nothing for a while here, but we'll see. No,
- 1:14:40Speaker 13: I'm kidding them that. I We'll just keep rocking and roll.
- 1:14:42Speaker 13: First Draft is wrapped up for the season, so we
- 1:14:44Speaker 13: had a blast there and Fantasy football season. I started
- 1:14:48Speaker 13: my rankings this morning, so we're rocking and rolling. And
- 1:14:50Speaker 13: then I had my first twelve players for twenty twenty
- 1:14:53Speaker 13: five NFL's raft up here.
- 1:14:54Speaker 12: My grease board right here too. So we're going to
- 1:14:57Speaker 12: keep ranking away one way or the other. All right,
- 1:15:00Speaker 12: fields have no shot.
- 1:15:01Speaker 6: Are you a Calvin bankster or Will Campbell guy?
- 1:15:07Speaker 8: Say that?
- 1:15:08Speaker 12: What we're talking Evan?
- 1:15:08Speaker 6: Are you a Calvin Bankster or Will Campbell guy?
- 1:15:11Speaker 12: Well, you know a little biased.
- 1:15:13Speaker 13: And I spent the past week in Detroit, uh and
- 1:15:15Speaker 13: you know I heard everybody's talking about Will Campbell. But
- 1:15:18Speaker 13: I mean these these are you know, breaking that time
- 1:15:20Speaker 13: will be a fun problem for the next eleven and
- 1:15:22Speaker 13: a half months to debate. But I tell you what, Well,
- 1:15:24Speaker 13: Campbell had a great chance to catch up with Wink Martindale.
- 1:15:27Speaker 13: He's now the DC at Michigan, and to say that
- 1:15:30Speaker 13: he's fired up about Will Campbell would be the understatement
- 1:15:32Speaker 13: of the year.
- 1:15:34Speaker 3: All Right, Phil Yates, thank you so much. We're going

- 1:17:07Speaker 15: What's going on with Brian Horror these days?
- 1:17:09Speaker 4: No, I don't know.
- 1:17:09Speaker 16: I think it would take a great opportunity to come
- 1:17:11Speaker 16: along for me to do that. Obviously, I was in
- 1:17:13Speaker 16: Las Vegas last year. I know I can still play
- 1:17:16Speaker 16: because I beat the Patriots last year, one of the
- 1:17:18Speaker 16: most to the list of the sweet moments of my career.
- 1:17:22Speaker 16: So we'll talk about that later. But you know, so
- 1:17:25Speaker 16: I know I can still physically do it. But at
- 1:17:27Speaker 16: thirty eight years old, my kids are getting older. You know,
- 1:17:30Speaker 16: I think it would take a really great opportunity for me,
- 1:17:33Speaker 16: you know, to come along, for me to to kind
- 1:17:35Speaker 16: of look and see. But so I know I can
- 1:17:37Speaker 16: still do it. Body feels relatively healthy, and you know,
- 1:17:42Speaker 16: so we'll see. It's it's always open. People always say,
- 1:17:44Speaker 16: you know, you if someone's offering you an opportunity to
- 1:17:48Speaker 16: play and you feel like you could do it, you know,
- 1:17:50Speaker 16: you know, I remember a former teammate saying play till
- 1:17:52Speaker 16: they tell you you can't. So definitely capable of it.
- 1:17:56Speaker 16: It's just got to be I think, the right opportunity
- 1:17:58Speaker 16: at this point, you know.
- 1:17:59Speaker 15: It It's like us sit there and oh, you know,
- 1:18:01Speaker 15: he can play, or it's time to go, and everything
- 1:18:03Speaker 15: like that. But I don't think the lay people realize
- 1:18:07Speaker 15: what's it like to make that decision as a family. Yeah,
- 1:18:10Speaker 15: when you have a wife who's supported you cross country trips,
- 1:18:14Speaker 15: taking kids back and forth, at some point in time,
- 1:18:18Speaker 15: her decision or her opinion, while always valued, you got
- 1:18:23Speaker 15: to really listen to that's got to be hard, like
- 1:18:25Speaker 15: from as a family standpoint, like at what point time
- 1:18:28Speaker 15: do I need to devote my time to them? Right?
- 1:18:30Speaker 4: And that's a huge part of the decision making.
- 1:18:32Speaker 16: So that's why I said, like, it have to be
- 1:18:33Speaker 16: the right opportunity and all those things, because you know,
- 1:18:37Speaker 16: deciding to go to play in Las Vegas last year, it.
- 1:18:40Speaker 4: Was not an easy choice.
- 1:18:41Speaker 16: It was an easy choice because it was Josh in
- 1:18:43Speaker 16: my relationship with him, but it wasn't an easy choice
- 1:18:46Speaker 16: in the regards of what does this mean for my family?
- 1:18:48Speaker 16: And thankfully we had a great school here that allowed
- 1:18:50Speaker 16: our kids to kind of virtual school with the help
- 1:18:53Speaker 16: of a tutor out there.
- 1:18:55Speaker 4: But it was rough.
- 1:18:56Speaker 16: It was it was a rough transition, and they were
- 1:18:59Speaker 16: all happy to come back once the season was over.
- 1:19:01Speaker 16: And so now my son, he's going into seventh grade,
- 1:19:03Speaker 16: he's he got accepted as Avarian brother. So you know,
- 1:19:05Speaker 16: those are all things that you have to take into account,
- 1:19:07Speaker 16: Like I want to watch him play football at of course.
- 1:19:09Speaker 4: He's watched me played for a long time. So maybe
- 1:19:11Speaker 4: it's times, you know, for.
- 1:19:12Speaker 8: A role reverse when you have when you came out
- 1:19:15Speaker 8: of Michigan State, I mean, you didn't get drafted, yep,
- 1:19:19Speaker 8: And I don't know what your expectations were heading in,
- 1:19:21Speaker 8: but to then have what a fifteen year career off
- 1:19:26Speaker 8: of that, what were your expectations sort of when you
- 1:19:29Speaker 8: arrived here in two thousand and nine, what were you
- 1:19:32Speaker 8: nolping for.
- 1:19:32Speaker 16: I was just talking about this with my son the
- 1:19:34Speaker 16: other day, and I said, listen, when I didn't get drafted,
- 1:19:37Speaker 16: you know, I kind of thought, Okay, the Patriots are
- 1:19:40Speaker 16: going to sign me.
- 1:19:41Speaker 4: I'll learn from Tom Brady.
- 1:19:43Speaker 16: Obviously, I grew up I watched Bill coach in Cleveland,
- 1:19:45Speaker 16: so I always kind of had an affinity to him,
- 1:19:47Speaker 16: and obviously him being a great coach, I thought it
- 1:19:49Speaker 16: was a great opportunity to go learn. And I thought,
- 1:19:52Speaker 16: you know, maybe i'll make the practice squad if I
- 1:19:54Speaker 16: get released. At least I'll learn from these guys. And
- 1:19:56Speaker 16: then sure enough, I kind of worked my way up
- 1:19:59Speaker 16: the ranks and then it be and Tom's backup my
- 1:20:00Speaker 16: rookie year. And you know, the things that I learned
- 1:20:03Speaker 16: in those first four years were so invaluable to me
- 1:20:06Speaker 16: that when I finally got some opportunities to play, you know,
- 1:20:10Speaker 16: you put those in motion and then you just keep
- 1:20:12Speaker 16: stack in years, stack in years, and and you know,
- 1:20:14Speaker 16: the thing about the quarterback position is if you're relatively
- 1:20:17Speaker 16: competent and you're a good guy, and you make some connections,
- 1:20:20Speaker 16: you know, you just extend your career, extend your career.
- 1:20:23Speaker 16: That's I mean, when I look at last year, if
- 1:20:25Speaker 16: if Josh isn't the head coach in Las Vegas last year,
- 1:20:28Speaker 16: then you know, maybe my my my career ends there.
- 1:20:31Speaker 16: But you know, luckily for me, I've met a lot
- 1:20:33Speaker 16: of great coaches, played with a lot of great players,
- 1:20:35Speaker 16: and made a lot of great connections which allowed me.
- 1:20:37Speaker 7: To do that.
- 1:20:38Speaker 15: That's a little bit unorthodox Brian as a rookie. Now
- 1:20:41Speaker 15: you're backing up Brady, who's, by the way, is coming
- 1:20:43Speaker 15: off a knee surgery at that point in time, and
- 1:20:45Speaker 15: you're the only backup quarterback your rookie year. That was
- 1:20:48Speaker 15: the same way in twenty ten, you're the only backup court. Like,
- 1:20:50Speaker 15: not a lot of teams did that.
- 1:20:52Speaker 3: Well, how did that?
- 1:20:53Speaker 15: What was your thought process in that? Like you want
- 1:20:55Speaker 15: to talk about literally next man up and you're one
- 1:20:58Speaker 15: pitch away. Yeah, you're one pitch away at that.
- 1:21:00Speaker 4: I think I was too naive to even understand that
- 1:21:02Speaker 4: at that point.
- 1:21:03Speaker 16: You know, now looking back, when you realize, like Tom's
- 1:21:05Speaker 16: coming off of major knee reconstruction, had you know, some
- 1:21:08Speaker 16: hiccups along the way. Man, if I had had to
- 1:21:12Speaker 16: play that year, I don't know how ready I would
- 1:21:14Speaker 16: have been. Obviously Bill believed in me, and Bill O'Brien
- 1:21:16Speaker 16: believed to me, and and so I'm sure it would have,
- 1:21:19Speaker 16: you know, worked itself out. We had a really good team,
- 1:21:21Speaker 16: So I think I would have relied on those guys
- 1:21:22Speaker 16: around me. But you know, at that point, you're just
- 1:21:27Speaker 16: I was just thrilled to be an NFL football player
- 1:21:30Speaker 16: and now I'm going to a meeting room every day
- 1:21:32Speaker 16: with Tom Brady and soaking up what I can I
- 1:21:34Speaker 16: can learn from him. And then you know, that went
- 1:21:36Speaker 16: for four years and then until I got released in
- 1:21:39Speaker 16: twenty twelve. So I mean those years, like you know,
- 1:21:41Speaker 16: those are kind of like, you know, the years you're
- 1:21:44Speaker 16: building your foundation of your career, and I couldn't have
- 1:21:47Speaker 16: done it in a better place.
- 1:21:48Speaker 8: So I wanted to ask you a little bit about
- 1:21:49Speaker 8: that rookie season. You were part of some really good teams,
- 1:21:53Speaker 8: and you know, ultimately you were part of a champion
- 1:21:56Speaker 8: in eighteen, but you know, you had that great year
- 1:21:59Speaker 8: in two thousand and twenty eleven, You go to the
- 1:22:02Speaker 8: super Bowl in two thousand and nine. You probably didn't
- 1:22:04Speaker 8: recognize it at the time. It's your rookie year, but
- 1:22:07Speaker 8: do you kind of look back and say, there was
- 1:22:08Speaker 8: a little bit of something amiss in two thousand and nine.
- 1:22:11Speaker 8: That's sort of the way it's kind of viewed here.
- 1:22:14Speaker 8: That was kind of a reset year, and we're very
- 1:22:17Speaker 8: spoiled because we've been brought up a.
- 1:22:18Speaker 4: Lot like when I didn't know any better.
- 1:22:19Speaker 8: So ten is going to the playoffs and all that
- 1:22:22Speaker 8: stuff is not I thought it was great.
- 1:22:23Speaker 4: I'm like, man, I'm a great but did you did
- 1:22:25Speaker 4: you see did.
- 1:22:25Speaker 8: You sense any like sort of dysfunction at the time,
- 1:22:28Speaker 8: or you know, maybe looking back at it, do you
- 1:22:31Speaker 8: feel like that wasn't the same as some of the
- 1:22:33Speaker 8: better teams that you were on.
- 1:22:34Speaker 16: Definitely wasn't the same. I think looking back now, knowing
- 1:22:37Speaker 16: what I know and being on some great teams, it wasn't.
- 1:22:39Speaker 16: There was definitely some learning curve, there was some adjusting
- 1:22:42Speaker 16: to new I mean, that was Bill O'Brien's first year
- 1:22:44Speaker 16: as a coordinator here, you know, so now I know
- 1:22:46Speaker 16: how important that is, you know, being a quarterback when
- 1:22:48Speaker 16: you're learning, even if you're keeping somewhat of the system intact,
- 1:22:52Speaker 16: you're working with someone new, and and that was you know,
- 1:22:54Speaker 16: so those were kind of I guess you call growing pains.
- 1:22:56Speaker 16: But I thought, like, man, we're going to the playoffs,
- 1:22:58Speaker 16: like we're this is I'm on the page. This is
- 1:23:00Speaker 16: like a super Bowl organization. Like Okay, one year, you know,
- 1:23:05Speaker 16: we didn't win the Super Bowl, and I'm like, oh,
- 1:23:06Speaker 16: we'll win it next year. I mean, I think that
- 1:23:08Speaker 16: that's kind of the expectation you have when you come
- 1:23:11Speaker 16: into that organization. And I've always said this, I've always
- 1:23:14Speaker 16: looked at it. When Tom Brady was the quarterback, I
- 1:23:16Speaker 16: never went into a game thinking we're not going to win. Ever,
- 1:23:19Speaker 16: there was never and I well, I've been on other
- 1:23:22Speaker 16: teams whether I was the quarterback or someone else is
- 1:23:23Speaker 16: the quarterback, and I'm like, man, I don't know how
- 1:23:25Speaker 16: much a chance we have this Sunday. And I can
- 1:23:28Speaker 16: honestly say every game that I ever played here backing
- 1:23:31Speaker 16: Tom up that there was I never had that feeling,
- 1:23:34Speaker 16: and obviously a lot of other players around that. But
- 1:23:37Speaker 16: you know, when I talk with a lot of my
- 1:23:38Speaker 16: old teammates, I think that that feeling was very you know, similar.
- 1:23:42Speaker 17: When someone accidentally threw away the school play costumes, no
- 1:23:46Speaker 17: replacements were shipped with FedEx and with picture proof of delivery,
- 1:23:50Speaker 17: everyone could focus on the perfect opening night FedEx. Where
- 1:23:54Speaker 17: now it's next for residential delivery only.
- 1:23:58Speaker 12: And now moments in.
- 1:24:03Speaker 3: History.
- 1:24:03Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 1:24:04Speaker 6: I know it's I know it could easily go the
- 1:24:06Speaker 6: other way and they could be in the super Bowl
- 1:24:08Speaker 6: next year. Nobody would be that shocked.
- 1:24:09Speaker 8: But I just it's not.
- 1:24:12Speaker 6: I feel like it's being like they are a top
- 1:24:13Speaker 6: ten team in power rankings and all this stuff, and
- 1:24:15Speaker 6: it's it's being talked about like it's like guaranteed that
- 1:24:18Speaker 6: that's gonna work.
- 1:24:19Speaker 3: Thinking about like Brice Hall being back, you know, like.
- 1:24:22Speaker 6: Yeah, that doesn't move the needle for me.
- 1:24:23Speaker 5: Well who's who's who?
- 1:24:24Speaker 8: But I agree, I agree with what you're saying. I'm
- 1:24:26Speaker 8: just saying I don't.
- 1:24:27Speaker 5: Who would you pick them in Miami? Just take Patriots
- 1:24:29Speaker 5: out of this, take back Patriots and Bills out of
- 1:24:31Speaker 5: the situation. Who do you think is the better team
- 1:24:32Speaker 5: between the.
- 1:24:33Speaker 8: Jets of Aaron and Jets Jets? I think Miami. What
- 1:24:38Speaker 8: I think Miami based on what their talent and the Jets. Now,
- 1:24:43Speaker 8: now if you're asking me who I'm going to invest in,
- 1:24:45Speaker 8: I think there's a better chance that Aaron Rodgers play
- 1:24:47Speaker 8: seventeen games than two. Yeah, that's a big one, right,
- 1:24:50Speaker 8: But if I think at full strength, I think Miami's better. Yeah,
- 1:24:55Speaker 8: that's okay, you don't have to agree. He's like he's
- 1:24:57Speaker 8: disgusted that when you do that, he like turned your
- 1:25:00Speaker 8: the way, like that's another great moment.
- 1:25:12Speaker 3: We're back. Excuse me. That was Fields from ESPN. Thank
- 1:25:16Speaker 3: you for joining us on the WebEx Cisco hotline. I
- 1:25:21Speaker 3: guess link, Yeah, hot link anyway. Yeah, we use that
- 1:25:26Speaker 3: for during the draft Elliott and we had Cam Williams
- 1:25:32Speaker 3: and Matt grow on that. So it's a good little
- 1:25:35Speaker 3: addition here from the temperature tests from the National Pundits. Yeah,
- 1:25:40Speaker 3: web radio at Patriots dot com is the email address
- 1:25:43Speaker 3: eight five five past five hundred is the ACE ticket houtline.
- 1:25:46Speaker 3: Let's get right to the phones. Uh, Dylan's in South Florida.
- 1:25:49Speaker 3: What's up, Dylan, Dylan?
- 1:25:54Speaker 5: Maybe it's dial in?
- 1:25:56Speaker 3: All right, dial in Dylan Jackson in Alabama? What's up Jackson?
- 1:26:03Speaker 12: What's up?
- 1:26:04Speaker 3: Guys? How are y'all good? Hey?
- 1:26:07Speaker 18: I love that Phillyates interview man. Always respected Field ever
- 1:26:12Speaker 18: since you've been covering the Patriots.
- 1:26:15Speaker 3: He works hard.
- 1:26:15Speaker 18: They also did I agree with Evan with the Joe
- 1:26:18Speaker 18: Milton situation, and uh, just just kind of wondering what
- 1:26:23Speaker 18: you guys think, uh, in terms of who's gonna be
- 1:26:26Speaker 18: gotting Drake may through this process?
- 1:26:29Speaker 3: Yeah, is it gonna be a VP?
- 1:26:31Speaker 5: Yep?
- 1:26:32Speaker 3: I think for the most part, but I think, you know,
- 1:26:34Speaker 3: I think mcadoo's gonna help, and yeah, McCartney's gonna take
- 1:26:38Speaker 3: up Jacoby Jacob yeah.
- 1:26:40Speaker 8: Yeah, I do. Okay, I'm ahead.
- 1:26:43Speaker 18: I'm good with Jacoby Brissette going into it with him.
- 1:26:47Speaker 18: I'm good with that. I guess I'm not just I'm
- 1:26:50Speaker 18: not sold on the a VP situation. Uh, I would
- 1:26:54Speaker 18: like to get your guys opinion. I'll take it off
- 1:26:56Speaker 18: the air.
- 1:26:56Speaker 3: I love you guys, Thank thanks, Jackson, appreciate it.
- 1:26:59Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't know about I think I'm less sold
- 1:27:02Speaker 6: about a VP the play caller than I am ABE
- 1:27:05Speaker 6: the quarterbacks coach. I mean, this guy played quarterback in
- 1:27:07Speaker 6: the league and has been coaching quarterbacks for like twenty years.
- 1:27:11Speaker 6: And you know, I'm not I understand that they're not
- 1:27:14Speaker 6: all hits. No one has straight hits all the time,
- 1:27:17Speaker 6: but you know, he's worked with some really good quarterbacks
- 1:27:20Speaker 6: and guys that he's helped I think. I mean, I
- 1:27:22Speaker 6: remember in Green Bay when he got let go of
- 1:27:25Speaker 6: Aaron Rodgers was not happy about it. You know, Aaron
- 1:27:28Speaker 6: Rodgers really went it went to bad for him publicly.
- 1:27:33Speaker 6: And yeah, and you know there's a lot of things
- 1:27:37Speaker 6: about especially like the way their footwork and their their
- 1:27:41Speaker 6: fakes on play actions and stuff like that that he
- 1:27:43Speaker 6: coaches that kind of hide the ball and he coaches
- 1:27:46Speaker 6: to you know, keep it here and then use your
- 1:27:48Speaker 6: your other hand and that kind of sells the fake
- 1:27:51Speaker 6: to the defeni Little things like that that I feel
- 1:27:54Speaker 6: like I can say, oh, you know, he's there's some
- 1:27:56Speaker 6: new ones.
- 1:27:56Speaker 3: Here's the thing. Who who on the team will be
- 1:28:00Speaker 3: able to say, other than obviously his performance in the field,
- 1:28:03Speaker 3: but who on the team will be able to say
- 1:28:05Speaker 3: a VP is doing a good job with him. Ben
- 1:28:07Speaker 3: mcadoo's like, because Gerard's a defensive crime, you know, and
- 1:28:11Speaker 3: he didn't like it's hard to tell individually. Will he'd
- 1:28:13Speaker 3: be able to know, yeah, he's doing right by Drake Mill.
- 1:28:16Speaker 5: Again, I mean I think it just looks the comfort
- 1:28:18Speaker 5: in the offense, and especially with the quick reads and
- 1:28:20Speaker 5: you know, seeing what's open and you know it's not.
- 1:28:24Speaker 3: Yah, Don Tuck and Bryan.
- 1:28:25Speaker 8: Just like he's going to come in at a baseline
- 1:28:28Speaker 8: of ability. Does that gradually go up? Remember Bill used
- 1:28:32Speaker 8: to say they come in here and then once they
- 1:28:34Speaker 8: stop ascending is when you have to cut ties. So
- 1:28:38Speaker 8: those little things, you know, we talk about all the cliches,
- 1:28:41Speaker 8: the footwork, the accuracy. If that looks like it's improving,
- 1:28:44Speaker 8: I would credit whoever's working directly with him. Yeah, I
- 1:28:48Speaker 8: will say this about Alex mann Pelt. I've talked to
- 1:28:51Speaker 8: a couple of guys that are not with the team anymore.
- 1:28:53Speaker 8: Brian Hoyer very briefly drew bled, like these guys rave
- 1:28:58Speaker 8: about him the person Alex Repelt the person now Hoyer
- 1:29:03Speaker 8: played for him a little bit, so he had some
- 1:29:05Speaker 8: some of that. But I don't find anybody that has
- 1:29:08Speaker 8: anything bad to say about Alex van Pelt.
- 1:29:10Speaker 5: No, I would say too, like it's I don't know
- 1:29:13Speaker 5: how much credit to give him for last year with
- 1:29:15Speaker 5: the Browns because we talked about it on the show
- 1:29:17Speaker 5: and we never you know, it was always kind of Stefanski.
- 1:29:19Speaker 5: But you know, the job that they did last year,
- 1:29:21Speaker 5: what four quarterbacks? Is that what they played?
- 1:29:23Speaker 8: I mean the credit blame thing, you know, it's like,
- 1:29:28Speaker 8: I give them a lot of credit for patching it
- 1:29:30Speaker 8: together and finding ways to stay relevant without a quarterback.
- 1:29:34Speaker 8: But he lost his job because he couldn't do anything
- 1:29:36Speaker 8: with the quarterback that we were supposed to do, because
- 1:29:38Speaker 8: he insisted on doing his offense rather than one that
- 1:29:41Speaker 8: suited to Shaun Watson. So I give him credit and
- 1:29:46Speaker 8: blame at the same time. It's incredible that they were
- 1:29:48Speaker 8: able to win games with dtr off the couch Joe
- 1:29:53Speaker 8: Flaco like that. That's I don't care what you say.
- 1:29:57Speaker 8: That's PJ Walker. I think won a game for him
- 1:29:59Speaker 8: last year. I mean, these are guys that really aren't NFL.
- 1:30:03Speaker 8: That's really hard to do.
- 1:30:04Speaker 5: Just like I could never name off.
- 1:30:06Speaker 6: Why why are you insulting PJ Walker like they actually.
- 1:30:09Speaker 8: They actually started the fifth I think Jeff might have
- 1:30:11Speaker 8: started the last, but they didn't win. Yeah right, yeah, yeah,
- 1:30:16Speaker 8: but p J Walker's they're scoffing ATFL.
- 1:30:21Speaker 10: You said five quarterbacks to play for the Browns last year, go,
- 1:30:24Speaker 10: I would have been like, uh, it's funny.
- 1:30:27Speaker 6: It's funny because their room is besides the John Watson,
- 1:30:30Speaker 6: who I wish was not in the league, you have
- 1:30:33Speaker 6: PJ Walker and dt R, who are two guys I love.
- 1:30:36Speaker 6: I love both those guys in that. But yeah, I
- 1:30:38Speaker 6: think with the Browns it's all the macro level stuff
- 1:30:41Speaker 6: with a VP like play calling design, Like how much
- 1:30:44Speaker 6: of that Wastfanski was the one calling plays. I'm not
- 1:30:48Speaker 6: so worried about him coaching the positions, like I think
- 1:30:50Speaker 6: that that's what he's been doing for the last thirty
- 1:30:53Speaker 6: years of his NFL career. I'm more worried about, you know,
- 1:30:57Speaker 6: game plan, like, are they going to be a step
- 1:30:59Speaker 6: ahead on the game plan? Are they going to how
- 1:31:01Speaker 6: he calls plays and sequences plays together, you know, that
- 1:31:04Speaker 6: kind of stuff, because he hasn't done it before without Stefanski.
- 1:31:07Speaker 3: Uh Tyler and Providence writes in I'm just curious your
- 1:31:10Speaker 3: thoughts on which team benefited the most from Jade and
- 1:31:13Speaker 3: daniels ascension this past year. Was it Washington being able
- 1:31:17Speaker 3: to draft him, the Patriots still being able to draft
- 1:31:19Speaker 3: the blue chip quarterback even from the third spot, or
- 1:31:22Speaker 3: Arizona all but guaranteeing that they'd be able to draft
- 1:31:25Speaker 3: the consensus top ranked non quarterback Patriots.
- 1:31:27Speaker 8: A fantastic question, Patriots. I think the Patriots as well,
- 1:31:31Speaker 8: aren't you contractually I'll be good to say that, No,
- 1:31:33Speaker 8: I learned that way.
- 1:31:35Speaker 5: I do think that, you know, and I think you
- 1:31:38Speaker 5: know we talked. Yes, feel a little bit about that.
- 1:31:40Speaker 5: I mean, I do think that there's a maybe a
- 1:31:42Speaker 5: little bit closer to readiness you would hope with Jayden Daniels,
- 1:31:45Speaker 5: and clearly Washington kind of feels like they're not really
- 1:31:48Speaker 5: all that far off. So you know, maybe that influenced things,
- 1:31:51Speaker 5: but for where the Patriots are right now, and they,
- 1:31:53Speaker 5: you know, are probably at ground zero of an offensive rebuild.
- 1:31:56Speaker 5: Twenty one year old kid with not a lot of
- 1:31:58Speaker 5: mileage on him, that that's what I want to.
- 1:32:00Speaker 8: Fis all snark aside. I think the answer is the Patriots,
- 1:32:03Speaker 8: and it's because two things. Number One, I like Drake
- 1:32:06Speaker 8: May more than Jayden and Daniels. I've made no bones
- 1:32:09Speaker 8: about that from the start of the process. But also
- 1:32:11Speaker 8: the part that the emailer says it allowed the Patriots
- 1:32:16Speaker 8: to get one of the three quarterbacks, right exactly. So
- 1:32:18Speaker 8: if it was just even if it take Jaydon Daniels
- 1:32:21Speaker 8: out of it and then Washington takes Drake May, the
- 1:32:23Speaker 8: Patriots wouldn't have taken Jayden Daniels had he not exploded. Yeah,
- 1:32:27Speaker 8: so now you're stuck without a quarterback and it kind
- 1:32:30Speaker 8: of like the way it looked at the end of
- 1:32:32Speaker 8: the season, you're picking three in a two quarterback draft. Well,
- 1:32:35Speaker 8: ultimately you ended up picking three in a three quarterback draft.
- 1:32:38Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:32:38Speaker 6: Yeah, Denver, that's the best way to put it is
- 1:32:42Speaker 6: that it became a three quarterback draft and you happened
- 1:32:45Speaker 6: to be the one with the third overall pick. Most
- 1:32:48Speaker 6: years you wouldn't have had a quarterback to take where
- 1:32:50Speaker 6: you would have been reaching, you know, significantly on.
- 1:32:52Speaker 8: And I know there were six ultimately in the top
- 1:32:54Speaker 8: twelve picks, but I don't think I think we can
- 1:32:58Speaker 8: all agree we wouldn't have wanted to had to take Nick.
- 1:33:02Speaker 7: Yeah, I feel like, going off what Field Yates said earlier,
- 1:33:05Speaker 7: like with those three there was no consolation prize, whereas
- 1:33:09Speaker 7: if you had to draft the fourth or fifth best one,
- 1:33:11Speaker 7: it would have beens that right.
- 1:33:14Speaker 6: Well, it definitely seems like even those teams, I wouldn't
- 1:33:17Speaker 6: call them consolation prizes, but those teams seemed to have
- 1:33:21Speaker 6: much lower grades on those quarterbacks and where they took
- 1:33:24Speaker 6: them but their quarterbacks, so they they had the quarterback
- 1:33:27Speaker 6: tax like bow Knicks. I saw some report that Denver
- 1:33:30Speaker 6: thought bo Nicks was like probably like a high end
- 1:33:33Speaker 6: second round pick on their board, but they took them
- 1:33:36Speaker 6: because of some crazy story about like his visit to
- 1:33:41Speaker 6: UH to Denver. He had like a backpack with him
- 1:33:45Speaker 6: and Sean Payton asked him, like what was in the backpack,
- 1:33:48Speaker 6: and he it was all like football stuff. It was
- 1:33:51Speaker 6: like cleats and tape and like all, and he was like,
- 1:33:53Speaker 6: that's a football guy. So now I'm gonna take them
- 1:33:55Speaker 6: twelve oor.
- 1:33:59Speaker 3: Backpack.
- 1:34:02Speaker 6: If someone shows up to a job in door, the explorer.
- 1:34:04Speaker 7: The laptop, a binder, a pen of paper.
- 1:34:08Speaker 3: That's it, you got the job. Okay.
- 1:34:10Speaker 10: So it was the most wild thing, like a microphone,
- 1:34:13Speaker 10: one of those like halo lens because.
- 1:34:17Speaker 8: Unbelievable story.
- 1:34:18Speaker 19: I remember I probably old Frederick an apology earlier in
- 1:34:22Speaker 19: the show anyway, but now I really you an apology
- 1:34:25Speaker 19: because at least you just took a guy in the
- 1:34:27Speaker 19: sixth round.
- 1:34:28Speaker 8: He didn't worry about what was in his backpack dumbage.
- 1:34:33Speaker 7: I really hope that this sugar, because that is excellent.
- 1:34:36Speaker 8: Yeah, it was like there was like three things amazing
- 1:34:39Speaker 8: and it's so funny.
- 1:34:40Speaker 3: He probably said it. You see what the backpack right? Yeah,
- 1:34:43Speaker 3: the way it work, I got a the way it
- 1:34:47Speaker 3: was dried ice cream right here, just in case I
- 1:34:50Speaker 3: get would have like a Jersey mics, you.
- 1:34:53Speaker 8: Know, and just the whole shouting materials.
- 1:34:56Speaker 6: The way it was written was like the paragraph, it
- 1:34:58Speaker 6: was like a full paragraph of like, you know, he
- 1:35:01Speaker 6: came in, this is what he had his backpack, and
- 1:35:03Speaker 6: then the next line is.
- 1:35:04Speaker 8: Just like three words.
- 1:35:05Speaker 6: It's like it was all football in that period, Like
- 1:35:09Speaker 6: it was like, this is just a football Like it
- 1:35:11Speaker 6: was just this amazing feat that all he had in
- 1:35:13Speaker 6: his backpack were cleats and tape.
- 1:35:15Speaker 7: After six years of playing college football.
- 1:35:17Speaker 3: I mean.
- 1:35:20Speaker 8: A lot of football stuff. Got It was another rants
- 1:35:23Speaker 8: with the Pennix thing. Have you noticed like there's a
- 1:35:27Speaker 8: pushback like, oh this is brilliant you No, now, you're
- 1:35:31Speaker 8: just like you just you go right into it. You know,
- 1:35:33Speaker 8: you have two years of cousins right into this us.
- 1:35:36Speaker 3: Oh yes, right, okay, oh yeah.
- 1:35:39Speaker 6: He'll be thirty five when he gets which absolutely could happen.
- 1:35:42Speaker 6: I'm not dismissing the possibility that could happen, but hey,
- 1:35:44Speaker 6: why are we assuming it is going to happen that way?
- 1:35:47Speaker 6: Why is Penix got less of a chance more of
- 1:35:49Speaker 6: a chance to hit than Daniels or may or whoever.
- 1:35:54Speaker 8: McCarthy. He doesn't, right, It's, let's face it, we don't know.
- 1:35:59Speaker 8: So the other thing that I hear a lot, well,
- 1:36:02Speaker 8: look at green Bay. If I have to hear the
- 1:36:05Speaker 8: look at green Bay argument one more time, forgetting the
- 1:36:08Speaker 8: fact that Green Bay had a really good playoff team
- 1:36:12Speaker 8: with Aaron Rodgers, so you didn't have to worry about it.
- 1:36:15Speaker 8: I would argue, especially the last time when they drafted
- 1:36:19Speaker 8: Jordan Love, that that was a dumb pick. I don't
- 1:36:22Speaker 8: care what Jordan Love is doing right now. They potentially
- 1:36:26Speaker 8: sacrificed possible Super Bowls by not taking the talent to
- 1:36:32Speaker 8: help the team. And they were still Aaron Rodgers was
- 1:36:35Speaker 8: the MVP believe wide receiver and you intentionally gave him
- 1:36:40Speaker 8: nothing to help that particular year. Was it twenty twenty,
- 1:36:44Speaker 8: twenty twenty, right?
- 1:36:46Speaker 11: That was?
- 1:36:46Speaker 3: He was the fourth That was the COVID year.
- 1:36:49Speaker 8: He was the fourth of the five really good quarterba
- 1:36:51Speaker 8: were in the war room. That was a great quarterback class.
- 1:36:54Speaker 3: Hey, hey, Frank, don't look at each other.
- 1:36:57Speaker 6: Statute.
- 1:36:58Speaker 3: I don't.
- 1:36:58Speaker 8: I don't understand why we just sit there and praise
- 1:37:02Speaker 8: a team that intentionally didn't maximize its window. They went
- 1:37:06Speaker 8: out of their way not to be as good as
- 1:37:08Speaker 8: they could be.
- 1:37:09Speaker 6: The only excuse for the Falcons is that, and it's
- 1:37:11Speaker 6: not an excuse because this is bad on them for
- 1:37:14Speaker 6: not recognized it is that Kirk Cousins' achilles is shot.
- 1:37:17Speaker 6: And so now you know, now if there's something like
- 1:37:19Speaker 6: that they know, right, But I would say that the
- 1:37:23Speaker 6: other thing that is so confusing is that you took
- 1:37:26Speaker 6: the oldest quarterback in the draft, So now you're gonna
- 1:37:28Speaker 6: sit him for two years. He's gonna be forty by
- 1:37:30Speaker 6: the time he gets on the field. But if he's
- 1:37:32Speaker 6: take JJ McCarthy, who's twenty, if he goes like twelve.
- 1:37:35Speaker 8: And five this year and they get knocked out of
- 1:37:37Speaker 8: the division around, you're not gonna sit there and look
- 1:37:39Speaker 8: and say, I couldn't know what we're a cornerback away
- 1:37:43Speaker 8: or if we were an edge rushing away, you know,
- 1:37:46Speaker 8: like that might have put us over the top.
- 1:37:48Speaker 3: It's not I mean, they've got talent down there, but
- 1:37:50Speaker 3: they're good.
- 1:37:51Speaker 8: No, but they're really good.
- 1:37:52Speaker 3: That's my point. I think they could make a run.
- 1:37:54Speaker 3: It's a terrible con I'm saying. It's not like they
- 1:37:56Speaker 3: couldn't have used another good player.
- 1:37:58Speaker 8: It's a really bad division. The itself is not overly deep,
- 1:38:02Speaker 8: you know, it's San Francisco.
- 1:38:03Speaker 5: Except for the NFC North. Paul am I wrong.
- 1:38:06Speaker 8: He just his pants off for the NFC North.
- 1:38:08Speaker 3: I love it. I love it.
- 1:38:11Speaker 8: He did the Lions, Packers, the Lions, the Bear Lions,
- 1:38:23Speaker 8: like I just I get that it's it's smart business
- 1:38:26Speaker 8: to take quarterbacks and having a succession plan avoids the
- 1:38:30Speaker 8: situation the Patriots were in. But at least when the
- 1:38:33Speaker 8: pat but at least that the Patriots they were winning
- 1:38:36Speaker 8: titles when they were ignoring the future. If I was
- 1:38:39Speaker 8: Green Bay, I would rather have won a title or
- 1:38:41Speaker 8: two in the twilight years of Aaron Rodgers' career than
- 1:38:45Speaker 8: have the guy that's in place now. I would take
- 1:38:47Speaker 8: that draw take that.
- 1:38:49Speaker 6: I mean, it's exactly what the Patriots did in twenty eighteen.
- 1:38:52Speaker 3: Point.
- 1:38:52Speaker 6: They could have drafted Lamar Jackson in twenty eighteen and
- 1:38:55Speaker 6: he could have sat behind Brady for two years, But
- 1:38:57Speaker 6: instead they drafted Sony Michelle, who ended up helping them
- 1:39:00Speaker 6: win a Super Bowl.
- 1:39:01Speaker 3: Helped them.
- 1:39:01Speaker 8: I'm not telling you they wouldn't have won without him,
- 1:39:03Speaker 8: but he helped them.
- 1:39:04Speaker 3: Yeah, it was part of it. Uh spiing Fresno. Did
- 1:39:07Speaker 3: you guys see Josh Allen as an outlier in terms
- 1:39:10Speaker 3: of how he overcame his accuracy issues? I definitely did.
- 1:39:13Speaker 3: In his rookie year. I was sure his goose was cooked.
- 1:39:16Speaker 3: What are other examples of quarterbacks who similarly developed to
- 1:39:20Speaker 3: overcome that level of inconsistency. Just wondering if we need
- 1:39:24Speaker 3: to hope Drake may is a similar kind of freak outlier,
- 1:39:27Speaker 3: or if instead it's a realistic code for him to
- 1:39:30Speaker 3: overcome his technical issue.
- 1:39:31Speaker 8: Well, two things.
- 1:39:32Speaker 6: What, he's a more accurate quarterback coming in than Josh
- 1:39:35Speaker 6: Allen was. Josh Allen completed like fifty eight percent of
- 1:39:38Speaker 6: his passes in his last year. I went to it's
- 1:39:40Speaker 6: a really low level of company. Yeah, I mean, he's
- 1:39:42Speaker 6: definitely more accurate. But I'd also say if he hits
- 1:39:46Speaker 6: on Josh Allen's level, he's an outlier, no matter how
- 1:39:48Speaker 6: he got there. Like, the bottom line is that hitting
- 1:39:51Speaker 6: at the quarterback position is an outlier. Like it's more
- 1:39:54Speaker 6: times than not the guys fail than succeed.
- 1:39:56Speaker 8: I don't know that there are a ton of quarterbacks
- 1:39:59Speaker 8: that come into the league with accuracy as being a
- 1:40:02Speaker 8: main weakness. So to answer his point, I don't know
- 1:40:06Speaker 8: if there are more guys than Josh Allen. I think,
- 1:40:10Speaker 8: I think, and he did.
- 1:40:13Speaker 6: He was accurate, though Lamar was an inaccurate He just
- 1:40:17Speaker 6: his mechanics were not exactly where they needed.
- 1:40:20Speaker 8: To be and he can't throw it to the receiver
- 1:40:22Speaker 8: here's a guy who had some mechanical flaws and he
- 1:40:25Speaker 8: overcame them. Yeah. No, I have Josh vouching me. Josh
- 1:40:28Speaker 8: Allen's rookie year.
- 1:40:29Speaker 3: I was all in.
- 1:40:30Speaker 8: I was like, whoa did you see that throw?
- 1:40:32Speaker 6: Josh Allen was a little bit more wild. He was
- 1:40:35Speaker 6: a little bit more wild than Drake Maker.
- 1:40:36Speaker 3: James Pettigrew, the most interesting Patriots fan of the world,
- 1:40:39Speaker 3: says I can't believe the negativity over the draft and
- 1:40:42Speaker 3: was disappointed you guys felt the need to defend what
- 1:40:44Speaker 3: is playing to anyone, a good draft that has awesome potential.
- 1:40:48Speaker 3: Having been in studio with you guys for a draft
- 1:40:50Speaker 3: show and witnessing the Razie Dowling pick, anyone who says
- 1:40:54Speaker 3: nothing has changed or nothing to be excited about is nuts.
- 1:40:57Speaker 3: I was a maniac before the draft, and I'm very excited.
- 1:41:02Speaker 5: Usually we were defending, we were trying to defend that
- 1:41:05Speaker 5: it wasn't a bad I don't know. I mean, I think,
- 1:41:08Speaker 5: I mean, everybody think. Everybody thinks it's pretty good. I mean,
- 1:41:11Speaker 5: there any draft is like, yeah, we'll see I mean that.
- 1:41:14Speaker 3: I just to me, I don't know if any of
- 1:41:17Speaker 3: these guys are gonna work out. To me, it was
- 1:41:19Speaker 3: just like I said at the beginning, they needed three.
- 1:41:23Speaker 3: They had three glaring needs and whether or not the
- 1:41:25Speaker 3: guys will fill those needs. They picked guys try to
- 1:41:28Speaker 3: help fill those needs, and that's rare. We've never really
- 1:41:32Speaker 3: done that before. Unless we were wrong about what the
- 1:41:34Speaker 3: needs were. We never were right.
- 1:41:36Speaker 5: That's what's hard for me with some of these draft
- 1:41:38Speaker 5: grades where it was like, well, what would it have
- 1:41:40Speaker 5: been then if they had gone and taken like an
- 1:41:42Speaker 5: edge defender, Like what would you have said?
- 1:41:43Speaker 3: Then?
- 1:41:44Speaker 5: You know, what are these people willing to be? Like, well,
- 1:41:46Speaker 5: it was a great edge defender. And I love this
- 1:41:48Speaker 5: move even though it wasn't a need.
- 1:41:50Speaker 8: You know, I feel like the difference in Again, we
- 1:41:52Speaker 8: don't know because we don't have the boards and stuff,
- 1:41:54Speaker 8: but I feel like Bill probably would have gotten to
- 1:41:57Speaker 8: some of these picks and said, I know we need
- 1:42:00Speaker 8: a wide receiver, but I don't have this wide receiver
- 1:42:02Speaker 8: ranked high enough to take him here. And he would
- 1:42:05Speaker 8: have moved down Cooper, do you know what I'm saying?
- 1:42:07Speaker 3: Or there's a defensive tackle that I love, but let's go.
- 1:42:10Speaker 8: He would have stuck closer to his board. Yeah, And
- 1:42:13Speaker 8: I don't know that maybe the Patriots did too. This
- 1:42:16Speaker 8: is why I said, we don't know. Yeah, for all
- 1:42:17Speaker 8: I know, Elliott Wolf had Jalen Polk thirty seventh on
- 1:42:20Speaker 8: his board.
- 1:42:22Speaker 3: He took him.
- 1:42:23Speaker 8: You know, I don't know what his board looked like.
- 1:42:24Speaker 8: But my guess is Fred's right. It's hard to imagine
- 1:42:29Speaker 8: quarterback wide receiver tackle, Bill going quarterback wide receiver tackle.
- 1:42:34Speaker 3: It just never happened.
- 1:42:35Speaker 6: I just feel like Bill, outside of the like left
- 1:42:38Speaker 6: field picks that we all know, I feel like outside
- 1:42:40Speaker 6: of the first round. He was always thinking a year
- 1:42:43Speaker 6: ahead with the draft. He always felt like, that's what
- 1:42:46Speaker 6: the draft is all about. That free agency is about
- 1:42:48Speaker 6: plugging your immediate holes. The draft is about we have
- 1:42:51Speaker 6: all these we have all these free agents on defense
- 1:42:55Speaker 6: next year that Deuce was talking about earlier. So I'm
- 1:42:57Speaker 6: gonna draft the defensive tackle. I'm gonna draft this. I'm
- 1:42:59Speaker 6: gonna draft that because I have to draft a edge
- 1:43:02Speaker 6: rusher because Matthew Judon's a free agent and we're not
- 1:43:04Speaker 6: gonna pay him, you know, and that sort of thing.
- 1:43:06Speaker 6: Whereas this draft for the Patriots was a needs based
- 1:43:09Speaker 6: drafty they attacked the most glaring needs on the team
- 1:43:12Speaker 6: and I don't know if Bill would have done it
- 1:43:14Speaker 6: that way.
- 1:43:14Speaker 3: And you know, again during Brady, you can do it
- 1:43:18Speaker 3: that way. But you know, as Patriots fans, we get
- 1:43:21Speaker 3: frustrated when we see other teams draft rookies and these
- 1:43:24Speaker 3: guys are good right out of the gate, and like, well,
- 1:43:26Speaker 3: why can't we get guys like that? You know, And
- 1:43:28Speaker 3: I think we did with Gonzales, he got hurt.
- 1:43:30Speaker 5: But I think I think to to to expand upon
- 1:43:32Speaker 5: Evan's point is that even when he did take some
- 1:43:34Speaker 5: of those rookies, they didn't it was hard for a lot.
- 1:43:36Speaker 3: Of them to get on the field.
- 1:43:37Speaker 5: And they get on the field and they're right back
- 1:43:39Speaker 5: off the field because of a mistake or something.
- 1:43:41Speaker 8: To finally see when they had a couple of years of.
- 1:43:45Speaker 5: Right and then they're getting ready to free agency and.
- 1:43:47Speaker 8: We got a draft that But I mean, like last year,
- 1:43:49Speaker 8: there was no like, oh it's hard to see Gonzo
- 1:43:51Speaker 8: out there. No, it's like day one training camp.
- 1:43:54Speaker 3: But I think, you know, credit to Bill, like he
- 1:43:59Speaker 3: really ran this thing like football university, and it was
- 1:44:03Speaker 3: and Billy, he seems this is a hard place to play.
- 1:44:07Speaker 3: And if it's a hard place to play, it's a
- 1:44:08Speaker 3: hard place to break into for a rookie. You I mean,
- 1:44:12Speaker 3: you have to have a certain mentality, and I think
- 1:44:15Speaker 3: it took a little time for most rookies to get
- 1:44:17Speaker 3: it here. And you know, either they did or they didn't.
- 1:44:21Speaker 3: And that contributed to guys just not seeing the field
- 1:44:24Speaker 3: right away, and Bill knowing that and saying, you know,
- 1:44:27Speaker 3: I got to get a guy assimilated. He's not going
- 1:44:29Speaker 3: to hit the field, So I do need to think
- 1:44:31Speaker 3: a year in advance.
- 1:44:31Speaker 8: But the funny part of that to me is it
- 1:44:33Speaker 8: seemed like they had the most success as a team
- 1:44:37Speaker 8: when they were doing you know, when Richard Seymour and
- 1:44:39Speaker 8: Matt Light were starting week one. Yeah, you know, when
- 1:44:42Speaker 8: Orgine Wilson and Santi Sami were playing key roles in
- 1:44:45Speaker 8: year one starting you know, forget about Maccody, Gronk Carnandez.
- 1:44:51Speaker 8: That was a huge part of the team's success.
- 1:44:53Speaker 5: Chandler Jones and Dante high Tower scoring a touchdown.
- 1:44:56Speaker 3: Right the first game.
- 1:44:57Speaker 8: I felt like when they were at their best, these
- 1:44:59Speaker 8: guys were playing right away Finnish sort of you're right,
- 1:45:02Speaker 8: got away from that, but and they were also check
- 1:45:05Speaker 8: with the rookies not as good. Yeah, they're not hitting
- 1:45:07Speaker 8: it as many draft picks.
- 1:45:08Speaker 3: Or but I think it was a hard place to play,
- 1:45:11Speaker 3: oh for sure.
- 1:45:11Speaker 6: But I think they were great for a long period
- 1:45:14Speaker 6: of time of the year head thing, and he was
- 1:45:16Speaker 6: always a year ahead, like he always had somebody in
- 1:45:19Speaker 6: the pipeline for somebody retiring, somebody getting overpaid or whatever.
- 1:45:24Speaker 6: And then towards the end, it just it they weren't
- 1:45:26Speaker 6: a year head, and all of a sudden, it was
- 1:45:28Speaker 6: like there was a million holes in the rowboat and
- 1:45:30Speaker 6: they were kept on trying to fill.
- 1:45:32Speaker 3: You know, that classic book The Rise and Fall of
- 1:45:34Speaker 3: the Roman Empire wasn't just one thing.
- 1:45:36Speaker 8: Are you thinking about that? It was all.
- 1:45:40Speaker 5: The book about it is like this all that's all.
- 1:45:44Speaker 3: It was like a million cuts. You know, the Brains river,
- 1:45:47Speaker 3: you know, Ernie and Dante and all these people leaving,
- 1:45:50Speaker 3: and you know it all contributed to.
- 1:45:54Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, and I've always reduced it down to
- 1:45:56Speaker 5: and I mean, it's it's really tied heavily into what
- 1:45:58Speaker 5: we're talking about. Where they had a good going where
- 1:46:00Speaker 5: they were ahead of the game, and then they got
- 1:46:03Speaker 5: behind the game. And I think some of the series
- 1:46:05Speaker 5: of not just bad draft picks, but bad decisions on
- 1:46:07Speaker 5: a lot of those draft picks too. You know, we
- 1:46:09Speaker 5: talked about like Toney, if you just bit the bullet
- 1:46:11Speaker 5: right locked tuney up for a while, then the cold
- 1:46:14Speaker 5: strange thing, you know, all the like Michael Lomono pops up. Great,
- 1:46:17Speaker 5: we got two guys now. But you know that that's
- 1:46:19Speaker 5: where I point to, And I mean I would also say,
- 1:46:22Speaker 5: I just I think that it started to get a
- 1:46:25Speaker 5: little old for a lot of these guys. And I
- 1:46:26Speaker 5: think as you lost the Brady's of the world, not
- 1:46:29Speaker 5: just his amazing on field play, but the guys that
- 1:46:31Speaker 5: were totally bought in that were here at four am
- 1:46:33Speaker 5: to eight pm no problem, you know, as that stuff
- 1:46:36Speaker 5: left and you had less and less leaders, and it's
- 1:46:38Speaker 5: just kind of Matthew Slater and David Anderest being like,
- 1:46:40Speaker 5: we got to work harder guys, and you know, they're like,
- 1:46:42Speaker 5: but Bill's a jerk to me all the time, and
- 1:46:44Speaker 5: I don't really want to play for him anymore, you know,
- 1:46:46Speaker 5: like that' and.
- 1:46:47Speaker 8: He's not going to pay me at the season. And
- 1:46:49Speaker 8: then well, I think the economic part of it is
- 1:46:52Speaker 8: might be the biggest difference, because I think Bill was
- 1:46:54Speaker 8: always so conscious of that structure and then I don't
- 1:46:58Speaker 8: think he really adjusted to the caps adjustment, and he
- 1:47:02Speaker 8: sort of stuck to those philosophies, and so many guys
- 1:47:06Speaker 8: didn't get because you know, back in the day, the
- 1:47:08Speaker 8: guys that got second contracts kind of took less. You know,
- 1:47:12Speaker 8: the Jarvis Greens winning championship. You know, they were really
- 1:47:14Speaker 8: good players. They got you know, more contracts, but they
- 1:47:18Speaker 8: didn't like break the bank. And all of a sudden,
- 1:47:21Speaker 8: like guys like Trey Flowers are coming up and they're
- 1:47:24Speaker 8: getting good contracts because the cap is exceedingly rising. Yeah,
- 1:47:28Speaker 8: and he was like, well, I can't give that guy.
- 1:47:30Speaker 8: But but Bill, that's what those guys make now.
- 1:47:32Speaker 6: Yeah, it's so true. And at the offensive skill positions,
- 1:47:36Speaker 6: especially like the Patriots were just not going to pay
- 1:47:39Speaker 6: a receiver twenty five million dollars. But that's what the
- 1:47:42Speaker 6: market dictates now that Calvin Ridley is worth twenty five
- 1:47:45Speaker 6: million dollars. And if you're not going to pay that price,
- 1:47:47Speaker 6: then you'll get Jacks Houston.
- 1:47:49Speaker 8: Do you think that I would say, one, there's no
- 1:47:51Speaker 8: way Bill would have given that contract offer.
- 1:47:53Speaker 3: Think there's any truth to what your guys say, Paul Uh,
- 1:47:57Speaker 3: Probably that no one could make more more than Bill, Like,
- 1:48:03Speaker 3: remember they had that one. It started out as a conjecture.
- 1:48:06Speaker 8: By the end of the show it was fact, that's
- 1:48:08Speaker 8: the established it's never been. That's tenant number one, throw
- 1:48:12Speaker 8: something at the wall. By the end of the show,
- 1:48:14Speaker 8: it's fact. I just want to tell them that my
- 1:48:17Speaker 8: big board beat their big board. They had a bad year,
- 1:48:21Speaker 8: only I think they had one.
- 1:48:22Speaker 3: So you mean throwing throwing markers at a white board,
- 1:48:25Speaker 3: well beat boy, Well yesterday I told you, And you're
- 1:48:27Speaker 3: taking a pat on the back for that.
- 1:48:29Speaker 6: Yeah, because because yesterday I was listening and Felger was like,
- 1:48:32Speaker 6: nobody hits more than I do on the big boards, Like, yeah,
- 1:48:36Speaker 6: one person did, to.
- 1:48:37Speaker 8: The point he was so upset that they only had
- 1:48:40Speaker 8: one hit that he's too I think they jam bell.
- 1:48:44Speaker 8: He wants to pull the plug on it because he's.
- 1:48:47Speaker 3: Like, I thought it was a sponsored element.
- 1:48:49Speaker 6: Well that's what they all said, making half kidding. But
- 1:48:53Speaker 6: Deuce and I both I know you.
- 1:48:55Speaker 7: So to that same point, though, if say Bill ended
- 1:48:58Speaker 7: up going to Atlanta, think he would have signed Kirk
- 1:49:01Speaker 7: Cousins for that much money.
- 1:49:03Speaker 3: He's a good question.
- 1:49:03Speaker 8: Actually can't, like, I don't know what the contract would
- 1:49:06Speaker 8: have been, but I do think you would would have
- 1:49:08Speaker 8: been strongly interested.
- 1:49:09Speaker 6: Especially because of his at some point, his age has
- 1:49:12Speaker 6: to be a factor, and like his window was just
- 1:49:15Speaker 6: so small that Kirk Cousins was perfect for for him.
- 1:49:19Speaker 7: Because I was going to say, do you think he
- 1:49:20Speaker 7: would have taken Kirk Cousins or do you think he
- 1:49:22Speaker 7: would have looked at the draft board and been like, Okay,
- 1:49:24Speaker 7: we're eight, like we'll just get one.
- 1:49:26Speaker 3: Speaking of going to be he's going to be on
- 1:49:28Speaker 3: Pat McAfee every Monday during the season, I think he
- 1:49:32Speaker 3: was at some point though McAfee has to stop groveling, like, no,
- 1:49:36Speaker 3: I'm that that will get old, Like he's got to
- 1:49:39Speaker 3: mix it up.
- 1:49:39Speaker 5: I just get the clips, but I just I think
- 1:49:42Speaker 5: it's it's a great part of Bill. It's a side
- 1:49:44Speaker 5: of Bill that we barely ever saw when he was
- 1:49:45Speaker 5: a coach. And now if we're going to get it
- 1:49:47Speaker 5: once a week and get you know, I'm I'm psyched.
- 1:49:49Speaker 5: I mean that's that's.
- 1:49:52Speaker 3: Yeah, well that's what I'll see.
- 1:49:53Speaker 8: I won't watch it, but I'm really interesting, you know that.
- 1:49:55Speaker 3: You know, Bill was on and he was talking about
- 1:49:57Speaker 3: Drake May not Drake many, Yeah, Drake May and he said,
- 1:50:01Speaker 3: you know, he's comparing himself to you know, Josh Allen,
- 1:50:04Speaker 3: and we'll see about that. I know a lot of
- 1:50:07Speaker 3: people have compared him. I thought that was does he
- 1:50:10Speaker 3: go around saying I'm Josh Allen, or I'm gonna beat
- 1:50:13Speaker 3: Josh Allen.
- 1:50:14Speaker 8: Or I'm like to comment at some point where he
- 1:50:16Speaker 8: said something, I'm paraphrasing something along the lines of some
- 1:50:21Speaker 8: people have said, there's some similarities to Josh Allen's gable
- 1:50:26Speaker 8: or I you know, I like watching Josh Allen play
- 1:50:29Speaker 8: or something like that.
- 1:50:30Speaker 6: That's what he said, not like I'm like Josh Allen.
- 1:50:34Speaker 6: Every every player gets asked who's the pro that you emulate,
- 1:50:38Speaker 6: you like to watch, you model your game after? And
- 1:50:40Speaker 6: that's I think the question that he answered, Yeah, and
- 1:50:43Speaker 6: everything you know we asked. Someone asked Jalen Polk and
- 1:50:46Speaker 6: he said Keenan Allen. He does Jalen Polk think he's
- 1:50:49Speaker 6: Keenan Allen? Does Bill go to the whiteboard and say,
- 1:50:52Speaker 6: you know, this guy compares himself to Keenan now?
- 1:50:54Speaker 8: And I don't know about that.
- 1:50:55Speaker 3: So I thought that was a little bit unfair, unless
- 1:50:58Speaker 3: unless there's stuff that he said that I'm not aware
- 1:51:00Speaker 3: of it.
- 1:51:01Speaker 8: Yeah, that's what I had heard.
- 1:51:04Speaker 5: I mean, and the rest of it I thought was
- 1:51:06Speaker 5: kind of overblown. But I do think I'm like, when
- 1:51:07Speaker 5: did he say that?
- 1:51:08Speaker 6: When it comes to public comments, whether it's a press conference,
- 1:51:11Speaker 6: I've been at every single thing that Drake may has
- 1:51:13Speaker 6: said this off season, Pro Day, combine whatever, I have
- 1:51:17Speaker 6: never once heard him say I'm Josh all I.
- 1:51:21Speaker 8: Would also add that he hates Josh Allen with the
- 1:51:24Speaker 8: fiery depths of it. He still thinks he's thinking, he
- 1:51:26Speaker 8: still thinks he's.
- 1:51:27Speaker 3: So at some point if he if he says things
- 1:51:30Speaker 3: like that, somebody on the show, and you would think
- 1:51:32Speaker 3: it'd be McAfee has to push back, Well, when did
- 1:51:35Speaker 3: he say that? You know, like, you know, make him
- 1:51:38Speaker 3: back it up.
- 1:51:39Speaker 5: Oh boy, it'll be interesting because we know what Bill's like,
- 1:51:41Speaker 5: because he's when he was in position of power at
- 1:51:43Speaker 5: the podium and you know, people try to go back
- 1:51:45Speaker 5: and forth and he would just shut it down. But
- 1:51:47Speaker 5: like on TV, he's like, we're onto the next segment,
- 1:51:50Speaker 5: We're onto the commercial, like no bills, just like we're
- 1:51:52Speaker 5: onto the commercial Foxy Roll.
- 1:51:56Speaker 3: I can just say him, Pat Patam, I'm just doing
- 1:51:59Speaker 3: what's in the best the show. All right, let's get
- 1:52:04Speaker 3: back to the phones. Matt's in Iowa. Hey, Matt, Matt,
- 1:52:09Speaker 3: what is going on.
- 1:52:12Speaker 8: There?
- 1:52:12Speaker 1: He is there?
- 1:52:13Speaker 12: He Matt?
- 1:52:14Speaker 3: Hey?
- 1:52:15Speaker 8: Uh So, Paul, I did have one thing to dispute
- 1:52:18Speaker 8: on what you said.
- 1:52:20Speaker 12: You said that each team only needs one quarterback.
- 1:52:24Speaker 7: That's wrong.
- 1:52:26Speaker 3: Wow. Yeah, well I know what Paul saying, only white
- 1:52:29Speaker 3: player at the time.
- 1:52:30Speaker 8: Sorry I misspoke, I'm but now I've rethought that, so
- 1:52:33Speaker 8: don't worry about it.
- 1:52:35Speaker 4: Okay, all right.
- 1:52:36Speaker 14: My question for y'all is, now that we have, uh
- 1:52:40Speaker 14: two wide receivers that we drafted, what does our wide
- 1:52:44Speaker 14: receiver room look like?
- 1:52:46Speaker 18: And who do you all expect to.
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: Make it out?
- 1:52:49Speaker 3: Is going to give you us his early I got
- 1:52:51Speaker 3: a quarterback, I got what?
- 1:52:54Speaker 4: What?
- 1:52:54Speaker 7: What?
- 1:52:56Speaker 3: Who makes this team? We got?
- 1:52:58Speaker 5: We got kJ Osborne. Think he's a lock. I think
- 1:53:00Speaker 5: Tomorrow Douglas is a lock. Jalen Polk of course, and
- 1:53:03Speaker 5: Javon Baker and uh and then I think, I mean,
- 1:53:08Speaker 5: I think Kendrick Born probably a lock. But I just
- 1:53:09Speaker 5: wonder if he could be a pup guy because he's injured.
- 1:53:12Speaker 5: He sounds like he's going to be healthy. But those
- 1:53:13Speaker 5: are my so those are my top five and and
- 1:53:15Speaker 5: then yeah, whatever.
- 1:53:17Speaker 6: I think Jalen Rager, just because of his return ability,
- 1:53:20Speaker 6: has a good chance have Marcus Jones.
- 1:53:23Speaker 8: Well, he's going to be the.
- 1:53:24Speaker 6: Pun returner, but Jalen Rager might be the kick returner.
- 1:53:27Speaker 6: I don't know how the new rules, Marcus Jones might
- 1:53:29Speaker 6: be better at both than he is. Jones maybe that
- 1:53:33Speaker 6: will push him off the roster. But I think you know,
- 1:53:36Speaker 6: if you if you're going to keep six receivers, the
- 1:53:39Speaker 6: six guy better have some kick game value, Like you
- 1:53:42Speaker 6: can't just have Juju collecting paychecks on the sideline.
- 1:53:45Speaker 3: What about the new rules on kickoffs? Does that change
- 1:53:48Speaker 3: the type of guy that you have possible?
- 1:53:51Speaker 6: I mean, Jalen Rager was really good at the traditional kickoff.
- 1:53:55Speaker 6: I don't know if he's going to be really good
- 1:53:56Speaker 6: at the new one.
- 1:53:57Speaker 8: I will see.
- 1:53:58Speaker 6: And that could Amara's point be Marcus Jones's job because
- 1:54:02Speaker 6: there are a lot of people have said.
- 1:54:03Speaker 8: Jones is really good. There's a lot of people that
- 1:54:06Speaker 8: have a bigger running back. I mean, could change the
- 1:54:11Speaker 8: coverage guys. You might want some bulk of your guys
- 1:54:15Speaker 8: at the point of I mean, you might want.
- 1:54:17Speaker 5: A little tackle breaking ability, because that seems like you're
- 1:54:21Speaker 5: gonna have to get through no one can move until
- 1:54:24Speaker 5: it's caught.
- 1:54:25Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, so that's that's you're basically starting from a
- 1:54:29Speaker 3: dead start there for everybody.
- 1:54:31Speaker 18: You know.
- 1:54:31Speaker 6: And I think explosiveness is the most important thing still though,
- 1:54:35Speaker 6: Like if you see a crease, you have to be
- 1:54:37Speaker 6: able to run through.
- 1:54:38Speaker 3: It, and there's a good chance once you get through
- 1:54:39Speaker 3: that crease.
- 1:54:40Speaker 8: You're gone.
- 1:54:41Speaker 6: I think early on in the season we're going to
- 1:54:43Speaker 6: see a lot of kickoff returns for touchdowns before teams
- 1:54:45Speaker 6: start to figure out how to defend.
- 1:54:47Speaker 5: Training camp will be interesting, just they're gonna have to
- 1:54:49Speaker 5: start working on it.
- 1:54:50Speaker 3: Yeah. So I don't know if like who you looked
- 1:54:53Speaker 3: at in the past put that things that will over
- 1:54:56Speaker 3: overst you know, it's a Marcus Jones best suited for
- 1:55:00Speaker 3: this new rule.
- 1:55:01Speaker 8: Maybe not, you know that I'm kind of I mean,
- 1:55:05Speaker 8: I don't know. I think it's still going to be
- 1:55:08Speaker 8: the return guy. I think still has to have that
- 1:55:11Speaker 8: kind of straight line speed, quick quick twitch, burst, change
- 1:55:15Speaker 8: a direction, get.
- 1:55:17Speaker 6: So, yeah, more like Cordero Patterson then Marcus Jones is
- 1:55:21Speaker 6: more of like the you know, joystick type of guy.
- 1:55:24Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, and I like that.
- 1:55:25Speaker 8: I want a guy who can make a guy miss
- 1:55:27Speaker 8: and then take it to Fred's point, If you can
- 1:55:30Speaker 8: get past the initial line of sort of congestion there
- 1:55:34Speaker 8: and get to the second level, it's like a running play.
- 1:55:36Speaker 8: It's like a short yardage running play in the middle
- 1:55:38Speaker 8: of the field. Yeah.
- 1:55:39Speaker 6: I really wonder if this rule had got into place earlier,
- 1:55:43Speaker 6: Cordero Patterson might have actually made some like real money
- 1:55:46Speaker 6: in free agency because he not only does he have
- 1:55:49Speaker 6: he had both he has running back experience too, but
- 1:55:52Speaker 6: he has the size and strength to break through and
- 1:55:54Speaker 6: then the speed to Dusty.
- 1:55:56Speaker 5: Do you think it's possible that this new kickoff rule,
- 1:55:58Speaker 5: like they blow up and it's all of a sudden
- 1:56:00Speaker 5: like off, I mean multiple scores, like to an unexpected level.
- 1:56:04Speaker 8: Like solution to that, which is just if it's if
- 1:56:06Speaker 8: it's a problem, the lion will change the rule. And
- 1:56:09Speaker 8: I agree with Heaven that I think early early in
- 1:56:11Speaker 8: the season you tend to see some returns anyway, but
- 1:56:14Speaker 8: I think with the adjustment there's probably more of a likelihood.
- 1:56:17Speaker 8: But wouldn't you just said, Okay, I'm just gonna touch back.
- 1:56:20Speaker 8: I don't care, I'm not going to go up an
- 1:56:22Speaker 8: eighty yard touchdo I'm just going to give them ball
- 1:56:24Speaker 8: at the thirty.
- 1:56:24Speaker 3: Right, Rudy's in California, will finish up with you. What's up, Rudy, Rudy.
- 1:56:30Speaker 8: Rudy, make it good, Rudy.
- 1:56:33Speaker 3: He's not there on that note. All right, well, Rudy,
- 1:56:37Speaker 3: you're gone. You had your chance. That was your shot, Captain,
- 1:56:41Speaker 3: you had one shot.
- 1:56:42Speaker 10: I know he's he's gonna come run out of a
- 1:56:44Speaker 10: tunnel with his golden helmet flashing and yeah, all.
- 1:56:47Speaker 3: Right, Well that's going to be it for this edition
