- 0:09Speaker 1: Managers meeting.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Blue Jays manager John Schneider sitting next to us right
- 0:13Speaker 2: now in Orlando live at the Winter meetings.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Schnid's good to see you, man.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Thank you, good to be here. Good seeing you guys
- 0:18Speaker 3: as always.
- 0:19Speaker 4: You see they put in the middle of the manager's meeting.
- 0:21Speaker 4: Do you see they put the like the last one
- 0:22Speaker 4: right in the middle, Big Tony. Yeah, like the best
- 0:24Speaker 4: looking manager.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Look, it's tough.
- 0:27Speaker 5: To be in the same room with that guy. Just
- 0:29Speaker 5: had him for the first time. I was kind of like,
- 0:31Speaker 5: you know, cowered away quickly. It just didn't want to
- 0:33Speaker 5: look at him too long.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Did you say, hey, Rookie, like a third of the room.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Yeah, what's up, brook Welcome to the big leagues.
- 0:39Speaker 6: No, well, you could get that with Terry.
- 0:42Speaker 5: And there's a lot of a lot of new guys.
- 0:43Speaker 5: I feel like not the new guy now kind of
- 0:46Speaker 5: a little bit. So it's nice to get to know
- 0:48Speaker 5: these guys too. I think Tony's doing obviously cool stuff
- 0:51Speaker 5: with with Tennessee and you know, really well respected, so
- 0:55Speaker 5: I just kind of get to know him a little bit.
- 0:57Speaker 1: How are you feeling after your October tie?
- 1:00Speaker 5: I mean it was I think I'm at the point
- 1:03Speaker 5: now where you kind of past the obsession of looking
- 1:06Speaker 5: at everything and being disappointed and you kind of look
- 1:09Speaker 5: back at all the good that we did, do you know,
- 1:12Speaker 5: ninety four wins compared to seventy four of the year before,
- 1:15Speaker 5: you know, winning the Al, winning the division, so many
- 1:19Speaker 5: cool stories, and I think just you know, being really
- 1:21Speaker 5: really proud of how we kind of raise the level
- 1:24Speaker 5: of expectation and standards with the Blue Jays and on
- 1:27Speaker 5: to twenty twenty six and how we can get back there.
- 1:30Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:30Speaker 4: So that's that's gonna lead me right to my question.
- 1:32Speaker 4: We had Hinch on yesterday and yeah, they lost an
- 1:34Speaker 4: epic series to the Mariners. So you guys went on
- 1:37Speaker 4: to beat When did you get over it? Because I
- 1:39Speaker 4: asked him, I said, are you are? When do you
- 1:41Speaker 4: get over it? He goes, You're thinking I'm over it?
- 1:42Speaker 3: Right right?
- 1:43Speaker 4: And he didn't even get as far as I mean
- 1:45Speaker 4: you The guys were like, I mean, inches inches away
- 1:47Speaker 4: from having everything.
- 1:49Speaker 5: I got asked that yesterday, and I don't think I'll
- 1:51Speaker 5: ever get over it, you know. I think that the
- 1:54Speaker 5: only thing that gets you over it is getting back
- 1:55Speaker 5: there and winning it, you know. But I think just
- 1:57Speaker 5: you're going to all think about that he's in that
- 2:00Speaker 5: team and so many crazy plays forever, you know, So
- 2:05Speaker 5: you kind of take a lot of pride in being
- 2:07Speaker 5: part of it and being able to manage that. I
- 2:09Speaker 5: tried to really take in the days and the moments
- 2:12Speaker 5: before the game started and just appreciate where you are.
- 2:16Speaker 5: So in terms of getting over it, I think it'll
- 2:19Speaker 5: just be with me kind of forever.
- 2:21Speaker 7: What moment is it for you? Because in fourteen we
- 2:23Speaker 7: lost Game seven with Alex Gordon on third. For me,
- 2:27Speaker 7: it's the Joe panic moment where he dove back up
- 2:30Speaker 7: the middle to stop a ground or to start a
- 2:33Speaker 7: groundball double play. Like I think about that as much
- 2:36Speaker 7: as I think about Gordo hitting a triple in the
- 2:38Speaker 7: left center field gap. What's the moment for you when
- 2:41Speaker 7: you think about the loss, because that's what it is,
- 2:43Speaker 7: it's a loss.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Right What you think about?
- 2:46Speaker 5: The one I always go back to is bases loaded
- 2:49Speaker 5: and varsh in the ground ball to Rojas.
- 2:50Speaker 3: That's what I always go back to.
- 2:52Speaker 5: Like would be lying if I didn't say, you know,
- 2:55Speaker 5: you wake up in the middle of the night thinking
- 2:56Speaker 5: about that play. You know I still do not. You know,
- 3:00Speaker 5: every week, but maybe every couple of weeks at this point.
- 3:03Speaker 5: But there were so many other things. It was so
- 3:06Speaker 5: weird to have that play not go your way, you know,
- 3:10Speaker 5: by a matter of inches, and then twenty seconds later,
- 3:12Speaker 5: kind of the same thing happens when Ernie hits the
- 3:15Speaker 5: ball to left and Pages and Kik, you know, are
- 3:18Speaker 5: brought into each other. So you in your mind, you're
- 3:20Speaker 5: expecting a different outcome. You're expecting that ball to drop
- 3:23Speaker 5: or you're expecting, you know, a wide throw home, and
- 3:25Speaker 5: none of them really happened. So you just find yourself
- 3:28Speaker 5: in this in this moment of wow, and then you
- 3:32Speaker 5: kind of got you have three minutes to readjust and
- 3:35Speaker 5: get back to the next inning. But those obviously because
- 3:38Speaker 5: they were the last you know, images really for us
- 3:41Speaker 5: that we had a chance. And so many things though,
- 3:44Speaker 5: going back to Game six with the ball getting stuck
- 3:46Speaker 5: in the wall and you know, the eighteen inning game
- 3:49Speaker 5: in game three, There's just so many, but I think
- 3:52Speaker 5: the ones that just were the last ones is what
- 3:54Speaker 5: sticks out to you, all.
- 3:56Speaker 7: Right, So in spring training you go over things that
- 3:58Speaker 7: are going to help you guys win the world too.
- 4:00Speaker 7: That play you just talked about, the Dalton varshow play.
- 4:04Speaker 7: Is there anything in spring training that's going Obviously it's
- 4:07Speaker 7: gonna be brought up. People are gonna be like that
- 4:09Speaker 7: are still there? Is there anything that will change as
- 4:14Speaker 7: far as the like approach to that play, how you
- 4:17Speaker 7: guys will approach it and from the Isaiah Kiner FILEFFA base.
- 4:22Speaker 5: Running Yeah, you know, I think you're always trying to
- 4:26Speaker 5: learn to get better, right, That's like the corporate answer,
- 4:28Speaker 5: and that's kind of how we operate. But it gives
- 4:31Speaker 5: you a chance to kind of drill down a little
- 4:33Speaker 5: bit more. Looking back, I think we could have done
- 4:35Speaker 5: a better job of getting Izzy off a little bit.
- 4:37Speaker 5: You know, the it wasn't you know runner at third
- 4:40Speaker 5: on contact, You're just going he's reading the play, He's
- 4:43Speaker 5: understanding that Will Smith likes to pick the third with
- 4:46Speaker 5: the left handed hitter up Izz. He's a smart baseball player,
- 4:49Speaker 5: so all those things are going through his head. If anything,
- 4:53Speaker 5: just kind of drilling down a little bit more. And
- 4:54Speaker 5: the odds of Varsh I think lining out to third
- 4:58Speaker 5: are very very slim, so giving himself a little bit
- 5:02Speaker 5: more room off the bag and maybe that's the difference,
- 5:05Speaker 5: you know, So I think all those things you as
- 5:10Speaker 5: bad as it was in real time and as it
- 5:12Speaker 5: will be forever. You know, you say, what could you
- 5:14Speaker 5: do different? I think that's the one thing, you know,
- 5:16Speaker 5: that we could have done a better job for him,
- 5:19Speaker 5: to give him the freedom to get off a little bit.
- 5:21Speaker 5: But I know he's gotten the brunt of it, man,
- 5:23Speaker 5: and I hate that he's wearing it. You know, I
- 5:25Speaker 5: think the world of him as a player, and he's
- 5:28Speaker 5: a smart, smart baseball player.
- 5:29Speaker 3: So that's it.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Man.
- 5:32Speaker 5: If we can prepare a little bit more and just say, hey,
- 5:34Speaker 5: if this situation comes up and it is Dalton varshow
- 5:37Speaker 5: against the right handed pitcher, you can give yourself a
- 5:39Speaker 5: little bit more room.
- 5:40Speaker 4: I got two things, and I hate to bring this up,
- 5:43Speaker 4: but it was such a big thing. There was so
- 5:46Speaker 4: much back and forth. You get it right, he didn't
- 5:48Speaker 4: do it right.
- 5:49Speaker 6: Carlos Feblys, I've known forever at their base coach. You know,
- 5:51Speaker 6: there's the did he tell him where to stand and
- 5:54Speaker 6: where to start?
- 5:54Speaker 1: Right?
- 5:55Speaker 4: Fine, that's neither here nor there. My thing is, you're
- 5:58Speaker 4: a catchman. I was a catcher. I played in the
- 6:01Speaker 4: World Series, I played in huge games. There's not a
- 6:04Speaker 4: chance in holy hell that he Ain's picking a third
- 6:07Speaker 4: base with the World Series on the line, because all
- 6:09Speaker 4: he's got to do is if IKF doesn't go in,
- 6:11Speaker 4: it hits him in the back, it lose the word
- 6:13Speaker 4: ain't happening, right, And we had Max Munsey and he.
- 6:16Speaker 6: Said, oh, we had talked about it.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Bullshit.
- 6:18Speaker 4: Yeah, no chance that he is. There's no chance that
- 6:21Speaker 4: that pick is happening. And then so that's fine. I
- 6:24Speaker 4: get you know, all these things are going through your
- 6:25Speaker 4: head and it's happening fast. But have you seen the
- 6:28Speaker 4: new thing that teams are doing. The Tigers do what
- 6:30Speaker 4: the Rays do it. Or there's a right handed hitter,
- 6:32Speaker 4: they take their guy on third and they put him
- 6:34Speaker 4: in fair territory and they have the runner actually take
- 6:38Speaker 4: his lead in fair territory. And I asked why they
- 6:41Speaker 4: do this and Hinch, Hinch, Hinch drew me a diagram.
- 6:43Speaker 4: But if Joey Kora had already told me why they
- 6:45Speaker 4: do it, and it's to get the third basement off
- 6:47Speaker 4: the line, because the chances of get Dalton VARs show
- 6:50Speaker 4: hitting a line drive to the third base and are
- 6:52Speaker 4: like almost zero, okay, but it makes the third baseman
- 6:55Speaker 4: get off the line. It takes away the pick because
- 6:57Speaker 4: the third basement's too far away. And plus when the
- 6:59Speaker 4: third is a sure when you look down there and
- 7:00Speaker 4: the guy's are got no lane to throw it. Yeah,
- 7:03Speaker 4: so and then it it eliminates let's say, bar just
- 7:06Speaker 4: a ground ball to third, they're already you're kind of
- 7:08Speaker 4: aurady in his lane to throw it home.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:09Speaker 6: So have you seen that play?
- 7:11Speaker 7: Now?
- 7:11Speaker 6: We think talk about that, like kratsaid in spring training.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that.
- 7:15Speaker 5: Yeah, there's always things that are just kind of counter
- 7:18Speaker 5: counter moves to a move, you know what I mean,
- 7:20Speaker 5: that stuff that we have to kind of you know,
- 7:22Speaker 5: take into consideration for sure, and it's really hard. Like
- 7:25Speaker 5: I agree with you, I would. I would have been
- 7:27Speaker 5: shocked if we'll try to pick him off at third.
- 7:29Speaker 4: I will if Will Smith it picks him off at third,
- 7:31Speaker 4: I mean, you know what you say, You're like, you.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Know what, right, you got it?
- 7:35Speaker 5: So it's like there's all these advanced reports and it's like, okay,
- 7:38Speaker 5: he does do that. I think just removing yourself from
- 7:41Speaker 5: just the information and just saying where am I right now?
- 7:44Speaker 5: Is that gonna happen? Probably not, you know, I think
- 7:46Speaker 5: it's just how is he checks down? You know, what
- 7:49Speaker 5: I mean, his his his checkpoint, just like here's where
- 7:52Speaker 5: I'm at, Here's where this guy is. But yeah, I've
- 7:54Speaker 5: seen that play. I know the Tigers are really good
- 7:57Speaker 5: at those things. We've seen guys do that. I saw
- 7:59Speaker 5: guys they year even scoring from second and they were
- 8:02Speaker 5: just cutting so close they are in the grass to
- 8:04Speaker 5: try to make you know, a tough throw, even tougher
- 8:08Speaker 5: going into home plates. So those are because of that play. Yeah,
- 8:10Speaker 5: we've we've definitely tried to dive into some of that stuff.
- 8:13Speaker 7: You've seen, Vladdie. Since you guys were both babies, you
- 8:17Speaker 7: kind of came up through the minor leagues with him.
- 8:20Speaker 7: The run he put together in the playoffs, is that
- 8:23Speaker 7: the hottest streak? I'm even talking fisher Cat, Dunedin Blue Jay, Vladdie, Like,
- 8:30Speaker 7: is that the hottest streak or the most locked in
- 8:32Speaker 7: you've ever seen? And do you feel like maybe a
- 8:35Speaker 7: little bit. If it had been his free agent year,
- 8:37Speaker 7: it would have been a little bit tougher for him
- 8:38Speaker 7: to lock in. But since he had security, you know what,
- 8:41Speaker 7: that's where he was at.
- 8:44Speaker 3: Starting with the security part.
- 8:46Speaker 5: I think that when he did sign the extension, that
- 8:48Speaker 5: kind of freed him up a little bit and freed
- 8:50Speaker 5: up everyone a little bit, like, hey, here's what we're
- 8:53Speaker 5: doing right now, and here's what we're doing for the
- 8:54Speaker 5: long term. So yes, I have seen him as hot
- 8:59Speaker 5: as that before. I've never seen him as locked in,
- 9:02Speaker 5: you know, And I noticed it. Even we win the division,
- 9:05Speaker 5: we got four or five days off and we're doing
- 9:08Speaker 5: workouts at the stadium, we're doing sim games and things
- 9:10Speaker 5: like that. There was just a different way about him
- 9:14Speaker 5: even in those days leading up to the to the DS,
- 9:17Speaker 5: and he carried it right on through the World Series.
- 9:19Speaker 5: It was really cool for the world to kind of
- 9:22Speaker 5: see him for the player. He is not just a hitter.
- 9:23Speaker 5: Everyone thinks about the hitter. But what he did, you know,
- 9:26Speaker 5: running the base is what he did defensively. He was
- 9:29Speaker 5: just in the zone.
- 9:30Speaker 3: You know.
- 9:30Speaker 5: He's in that spot where elite athletes, elite performers can
- 9:34Speaker 5: get to. So now it's just how do you maintain that?
- 9:38Speaker 5: You know, That's that's the next conversation with Ladd is
- 9:40Speaker 5: just how do you keep yourself there as much as
- 9:42Speaker 5: you can? Almost impossible to do it one sixty two,
- 9:46Speaker 5: but he's shown he can do it. He was just
- 9:49Speaker 5: on a different level I think at one point, I
- 9:51Speaker 5: don't know if you finished the postseason, but he had
- 9:54Speaker 5: more home runs and strikeouts, which is which is pretty remarkable.
- 9:57Speaker 5: So it was fun to be in the du i
- 10:00Speaker 5: watching him do his thing.
- 10:01Speaker 4: Okay, well, then how'd you carry this over to twenty
- 10:03Speaker 4: twenty six? You know, I know people say it's a
- 10:05Speaker 4: different year, and I'm not talking about just flat, I'm
- 10:06Speaker 4: talking about the team in general. Because you guys were humble,
- 10:09Speaker 4: your pitching was unbelievable, your bullpen was locked in. You
- 10:11Speaker 4: guys are getting huge hits from one through nine in
- 10:14Speaker 4: the lineup. As a manager, how do you carry this
- 10:16Speaker 4: over to twenty twenty six? I know every year is different,
- 10:19Speaker 4: but now you bringing Dylan Ceas and you're in, You're
- 10:21Speaker 4: there's all kinds of rumors about, you know, Toronto's kind
- 10:23Speaker 4: of almost becoming like a little bit of a destination
- 10:27Speaker 4: place where people when to go after seeing what you
- 10:29Speaker 4: guys did last year? So how do you as the
- 10:31Speaker 4: manager carry this over to the next year?
- 10:33Speaker 5: So I wish I knew, you know what I mean,
- 10:36Speaker 5: I know a lot good problem that had though, right,
- 10:37Speaker 5: it's a good problem to have a lot of people
- 10:39Speaker 5: have been through this and we actually met last week,
- 10:42Speaker 5: brought the staff down here. We talked about that. It's like,
- 10:43Speaker 5: how do you latch onto the good things we did?
- 10:47Speaker 5: And it's easy to think about just the postseason, right,
- 10:49Speaker 5: it just happened, but it wasn't always great. You know,
- 10:52Speaker 5: back in April and May, we're grinding a little bit
- 10:54Speaker 5: and Okay, what did we do differently to get on
- 10:56Speaker 5: this role?
- 10:58Speaker 3: So I think I've said this a lot.
- 11:00Speaker 5: I feel like this year we've been very aligned top
- 11:02Speaker 5: to about him front office, to coaches, to players, and
- 11:05Speaker 5: down to the minor league system. So I think everyone's
- 11:08Speaker 5: doing their part. And you know, Ross is going out
- 11:10Speaker 5: and he's added to really good starting pitchers already. He's
- 11:14Speaker 5: going to continue to try to make our team better.
- 11:16Speaker 5: But I think my job and the staff's job is
- 11:19Speaker 5: to just really stay on these guys. These guys that
- 11:22Speaker 5: kind of turned into household names, Ernie Clement, Madison Barger,
- 11:26Speaker 5: you know, Alejandra Kirk, they kind of I don't want them,
- 11:28Speaker 5: Nathan Lucas. I don't want them to feel like they
- 11:30Speaker 5: have to be anything different. That's my big I don't
- 11:33Speaker 5: want to say concern, but that's my focus with these
- 11:34Speaker 5: guys going into next year. It's just you have to
- 11:37Speaker 5: continue to be who you are and be good at
- 11:39Speaker 5: what you're good at. So that part we'll have to,
- 11:42Speaker 5: I think drill down on a little bit, and then
- 11:44Speaker 5: just what did the how did the culture get to
- 11:46Speaker 5: where it got to and what everyone saw, you know,
- 11:49Speaker 5: throughout the postseason was legit and real. The guys loved
- 11:52Speaker 5: each other, they loved coming to the park, They pulled
- 11:55Speaker 5: for one another, they didn't care who got the credit.
- 11:57Speaker 5: So from that standpoint, we've raised that expectation. You can
- 12:01Speaker 5: kind of say, Okay, this is how we do things.
- 12:02Speaker 5: And I do think it helped, you know, teams kind
- 12:05Speaker 5: of took notice, and players kind of took notice. You know,
- 12:06Speaker 5: the feedback that I was getting in the outreach I
- 12:10Speaker 5: was getting during the postseason from other managers and other
- 12:13Speaker 5: players was phenomenal. So how do we just bottle that
- 12:16Speaker 5: up and say, what were we doing when it was
- 12:18Speaker 5: really good?
- 12:19Speaker 3: And let's continue to do it all? Right?
- 12:21Speaker 7: Well, part of that culture was one of the reasons
- 12:24Speaker 7: that Shane Bieber said, I'm going to pick up my
- 12:26Speaker 7: player option now from an outsider's view, and you can
- 12:29Speaker 7: tell me which of these options is the case he's
- 12:33Speaker 7: either hurt and wants to guarantee this one next year,
- 12:36Speaker 7: and so he might start a little start a little
- 12:38Speaker 7: later in the season. To this clubhouse culture is something
- 12:42Speaker 7: that's never been seen before. And he would turn down
- 12:44Speaker 7: thirty plus million in the off season or three. You
- 12:49Speaker 7: have pictures of him and so it's blackmail and you
- 12:52Speaker 7: brought him back, So Witches.
- 12:56Speaker 5: It's definitely not three. He's pretty, he's got it. He's
- 12:59Speaker 5: pretty button up. I think, you know, he's it's a
- 13:03Speaker 5: weird thing coming off of Tommy John, you.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Know what I mean.
- 13:05Speaker 5: And he he did everything we could have hoped for
- 13:08Speaker 5: and more. He really fit in really well, really quickly
- 13:13Speaker 5: with our group. And when I say that too, it
- 13:15Speaker 5: was players, it was staff, and it was you know,
- 13:18Speaker 5: their wives and kids too. I feel like we do
- 13:20Speaker 5: a phenomenal job of that. So everyone kind of felt
- 13:23Speaker 5: at home. And as of now, I mean, Beebs is
- 13:26Speaker 5: on track for opening day. You know, it's anyone coming
- 13:30Speaker 5: off that surgery and then pitching as deep into the
- 13:33Speaker 5: World Series as he did coming out of the bullpen
- 13:35Speaker 5: in Game seven, We're going to be mindful of his workload,
- 13:37Speaker 5: you know.
- 13:38Speaker 3: So whether there was some doubt in his mind.
- 13:41Speaker 5: You know, I'm not really sure, you know, but in
- 13:44Speaker 5: terms of talking to him now and getting ready for spring,
- 13:48Speaker 5: we're just going to be mindful and kind of take
- 13:49Speaker 5: it week to week on how he's feeling. But the
- 13:52Speaker 5: expectation is that he's going to be ready for opening day.
- 13:54Speaker 5: So I think it's a combination maybe of the first two,
- 13:58Speaker 5: you know, him taking care of him self physically, but
- 14:01Speaker 5: at the same time being really comfortable in this surroundings.
- 14:03Speaker 3: He was in how real before we move on?
- 14:06Speaker 4: Because I I kind of hit on this and when
- 14:09Speaker 4: we were doing our postseason stuff with Tommy John. Guys,
- 14:13Speaker 4: especially when they first come back, it's almost every other start, right,
- 14:15Speaker 4: they had a really good start and they kind of
- 14:17Speaker 4: and they lose it. And we asked him because we had
- 14:19Speaker 4: him on and he kind of it. He kind of
- 14:21Speaker 4: admitted it in a weird way, like, yes, when you
- 14:23Speaker 4: have one really good start and the next one it's
- 14:25Speaker 4: not the same, and then the next one's really good again,
- 14:27Speaker 4: and then you is that a real thing for guys
- 14:29Speaker 4: that you've noticed with Tommy John?
- 14:30Speaker 3: Kind of yeah, it's it's up and down.
- 14:32Speaker 1: You know.
- 14:32Speaker 5: His first start to Mammy was like I think six
- 14:34Speaker 5: score lists punched out nine no walks, and everyone says
- 14:37Speaker 5: command comes last. You know, stuff is there, but command
- 14:39Speaker 5: comes last. He had his command throughout the whole time
- 14:42Speaker 5: he was back with us, and there were some ups
- 14:44Speaker 5: and downs, and I think it's just you spend so
- 14:47Speaker 5: much time on a routine, on a schedule. Here's where
- 14:50Speaker 5: I'm throwing, here's my side day, here's my game day.
- 14:53Speaker 5: You don't really have time to deload a little bit.
- 14:56Speaker 5: You're just going, going, going, So that probably plays into it.
- 14:59Speaker 5: We tried to give him, him and everyone extra rest
- 15:01Speaker 5: as we got down later in the season, went to
- 15:04Speaker 5: a six man at one point for a turn or
- 15:06Speaker 5: two through and you kind of never know, you know
- 15:09Speaker 5: what I mean to me, it's always.
- 15:10Speaker 3: The next year.
- 15:11Speaker 5: Then guys are really feeling like themselves and you know
- 15:14Speaker 5: they have a regular offseason, not a rehab off season,
- 15:17Speaker 5: and hopefully kind of hit the ground run and get
- 15:20Speaker 5: back to the cy young caliber picture that he has been.
- 15:23Speaker 4: Okay, then let's talk about another one of your pictures.
- 15:25Speaker 4: There's a big story that came out not too long ago.
- 15:27Speaker 4: A guy missed the World Series. Yes, did you know?
- 15:31Speaker 6: Did you understand? Because I know he was mad and
- 15:34Speaker 6: but how weird is that?
- 15:35Speaker 4: And then then you have a whole conversation about his
- 15:37Speaker 4: teammates and what do they do? So how do you
- 15:39Speaker 4: handle that going into spring training?
- 15:41Speaker 5: You know, I think you handle it in the off season.
- 15:43Speaker 5: For one, I mean, Posey's been so good for us,
- 15:46Speaker 5: you know, and he was not happy moving out of
- 15:49Speaker 5: the rotation. That was well documented and he probably took
- 15:53Speaker 5: a day to be pissed, and then you know, said, Okay,
- 15:56Speaker 5: this is what's best for the team, and unfortunately, you know,
- 16:00Speaker 5: goes on the il. He had been battling that all
- 16:03Speaker 5: year and he's such a prideful guy and making his starts,
- 16:06Speaker 5: so he was feeling he was feeling it a little bit.
- 16:09Speaker 5: And then when we were traveling back and forth to Seattle,
- 16:12Speaker 5: you know, some guys stay back. He was one of
- 16:14Speaker 5: those guys that stay back. And then with the World Series,
- 16:17Speaker 5: it was, Hey, I need to spend time with my family.
- 16:20Speaker 5: That's what we were told. We're obviously gonna, you know,
- 16:23Speaker 5: respect that, and he's a he's a big time family man.
- 16:26Speaker 5: And right now, you handle it the best you can.
- 16:28Speaker 5: You say, hey, Hosey, we're here to help you get better.
- 16:32Speaker 5: If he feels bad about it, or if his teammates
- 16:34Speaker 5: have certain feelings about it. You just got to get
- 16:36Speaker 5: in front of it and make sure that when everyone
- 16:38Speaker 5: arrives in February that everyone's kind of understanding what happened
- 16:42Speaker 5: and on the same page and give him a little
- 16:44Speaker 5: bit of forgiveness.
- 16:45Speaker 3: But you know, Jose is a great teammate.
- 16:47Speaker 5: He's done so much in his career, and I think that,
- 16:52Speaker 5: you know, when the dust settles, I think he'll be viewed,
- 16:54Speaker 5: you know, the exact same way as he has been
- 16:56Speaker 5: his entire career.
- 16:57Speaker 6: Good answer, do.
- 16:59Speaker 7: You anticipate anticipate anybody in the clubhouse, like from uprisings
- 17:03Speaker 7: that was happening, because we talked about it that guys
- 17:05Speaker 7: in the clubhouse maybe would be pissed in spring training,
- 17:08Speaker 7: But in the World Series, No, we gotta play on
- 17:12Speaker 7: the field, Like we're not like, oh, who's not here? Oh?
- 17:14Speaker 5: No, Like, yeah, it's in World Series. It's kind of like, hey,
- 17:18Speaker 5: when does the game start? You know what I mean,
- 17:19Speaker 5: You're not worrying about all these other things. How are
- 17:21Speaker 5: we going to win tonight? I mean, really, it already
- 17:24Speaker 5: has started to be handled. It will be handled before
- 17:27Speaker 5: we get to spring training, So it's not a thing
- 17:29Speaker 5: in spring training. You know, it's just you know, him
- 17:32Speaker 5: and myself and the other guys and the team just
- 17:35Speaker 5: sorting through some things kind of you know, airing some
- 17:37Speaker 5: things out a little bit and saying, hey.
- 17:40Speaker 3: Hosie, you are You're part of our rotation.
- 17:42Speaker 5: You know, it wasn't that we wanted to take you
- 17:45Speaker 5: out of the rotation when we did when trade came up.
- 17:48Speaker 5: But you know, this is what we're doing right now
- 17:51Speaker 5: to try to win. Doesn't mean it's going to be
- 17:52Speaker 5: like that in twenty twenty six. So I think just
- 17:55Speaker 5: squaring that away with him and man, I mean, if
- 17:58Speaker 5: we're going to get back to where we want to
- 18:00Speaker 5: get to, he's going to be a huge part of it.
- 18:01Speaker 3: So that'll be handled before we even get going to camp.
- 18:04Speaker 4: All right, twenty twenty six defending American League champions. You
- 18:08Speaker 4: already brought Dylan seas biggest, one of the biggest signings
- 18:12Speaker 4: so far of the off season.
- 18:14Speaker 6: What's next for the Blue Jays? Do you have any
- 18:16Speaker 6: say or you like, Hey, I want I want to
- 18:17Speaker 6: do it.
- 18:18Speaker 7: I can't.
- 18:18Speaker 6: I'm not going to name names, you know, you know, the.
- 18:20Speaker 5: Nation though the visitation document to visit our complex and
- 18:25Speaker 5: I said, no, it's only for free agents, but I'm
- 18:27Speaker 5: a free agent, said, I'm still a free agent.
- 18:30Speaker 4: I've actually been to it because my son played for
- 18:32Speaker 4: the Blue Jay scout team, so they used to do
- 18:34Speaker 4: all kinds of stuff there.
- 18:35Speaker 5: It's incredible, pretty nice. It's unbelieva. Yah, it's the best
- 18:38Speaker 5: one I've seen. I think it's one of one, I
- 18:40Speaker 5: really do. I think I hate though, and this is
- 18:42Speaker 5: me being nitpicky as hell. The stadium's not there.
- 18:45Speaker 4: You got to get on the bus, you know, if
- 18:47Speaker 4: you got the double decker bus, you guys have to
- 18:49Speaker 4: get on the.
- 18:49Speaker 5: Grid to build the whole complex by the stadium. There
- 18:51Speaker 5: wasn't enough land, so we kind of had to do
- 18:54Speaker 5: what we got to do. But in terms of what's next,
- 18:56Speaker 5: I think you get cees, you know, you get ponds
- 18:59Speaker 5: in the rotation. And we're still looking to add We're
- 19:02Speaker 5: still looking to add a bat. We're talking with Bo,
- 19:03Speaker 5: We've met with Tucker. We'd love to have Bo back,
- 19:06Speaker 5: you know what I mean. I think that what he
- 19:08Speaker 5: does for our lineup in our clubhouse is kind of
- 19:11Speaker 5: underrated and undervalued. When you have guy like Vlad who
- 19:14Speaker 5: signed long term, but I think that's an area we
- 19:17Speaker 5: want to address, you know, make sure we have another
- 19:19Speaker 5: bat there and then looking for some high leverage relief options,
- 19:24Speaker 5: you know, at the back.
- 19:25Speaker 3: End of the pen.
- 19:25Speaker 5: So it's it's cool right now because we're we're hitting
- 19:28Speaker 5: that part. You know, this has been building for a
- 19:30Speaker 5: few years in Toronto in terms of ownership, support, payroll, players, facilities,
- 19:37Speaker 5: and it's it's shown on the field. So I think
- 19:39Speaker 5: having this success we've had makes it a little bit
- 19:43Speaker 5: more desirable to come here. We've definitely heard that from
- 19:46Speaker 5: players and agents and comfortable to say that we will
- 19:50Speaker 5: continue to try to get better as this month unfolds.
- 19:55Speaker 7: Can you put an over under on the amount of
- 19:57Speaker 7: starts that your organization feels Trey us average is going
- 20:00Speaker 7: to make. Obviously, just coming up last year now has
- 20:04Speaker 7: more playoff starts than regular season starts. We heard all
- 20:07Speaker 7: the stories, just like you hitting a home run and
- 20:09Speaker 7: then hanging up your cleats. They told the story like
- 20:13Speaker 7: a yeah, they told it though, Joe Davis told that
- 20:18Speaker 7: story probably seven times, sick of it.
- 20:21Speaker 5: So that was when the Dodgers were losing. He just
- 20:23Speaker 5: wanted to fill the air because when they were winning,
- 20:24Speaker 5: he was going crazy. Stop it, I got I got
- 20:27Speaker 5: a bone to pick with Joe.
- 20:28Speaker 6: Stop.
- 20:28Speaker 3: Okay, to stop broadcast anyway, stop anyway?
- 20:31Speaker 4: Okay, hold on, no, no, now we're going to have
- 20:33Speaker 4: a bone to pick because I do these games. Yes,
- 20:35Speaker 4: what you understand is whoever's winning is who they're who
- 20:40Speaker 4: we talk about, because what am I going to talk
- 20:42Speaker 4: about if you're losing?
- 20:43Speaker 5: True, maybe me hanging up my spikes as a bad
- 20:45Speaker 5: player at spring training. But anyway, that's a cool story.
- 20:49Speaker 5: That's cool story for like one second, you know what
- 20:51Speaker 5: I mean. But I think Bobashid didn't the three on
- 20:53Speaker 5: Homer off Otani's look cooler, and you know fly ball
- 20:56Speaker 5: to center that Boll's gone.
- 20:57Speaker 1: You know.
- 21:00Speaker 3: Anyway, that's not Wait.
- 21:01Speaker 1: So is it because he's a Dodgers guy?
- 21:03Speaker 6: Well, you know you sound like right now every Blue
- 21:09Speaker 6: Jays fan on the planet.
- 21:10Speaker 3: I had to get it out.
- 21:11Speaker 5: I was actually and he covered us the entire postseason.
- 21:15Speaker 5: Him and Smulti, they're awesome and he's got one of
- 21:18Speaker 5: the best voices in the game. I love his energy.
- 21:21Speaker 5: He reached out to me before it even started. If
- 21:23Speaker 5: we saw him for three days in l a and
- 21:24Speaker 5: he told me Hey, if you hit to the postseason,
- 21:26Speaker 5: I'm going to cover you. I got all the respect
- 21:28Speaker 5: in the world for him. He's really cool. I think
- 21:30Speaker 5: he's great at what he does. But I had to
- 21:31Speaker 5: get that out there. It's a little subtle.
- 21:34Speaker 4: I can't put my phone will be as soon as
- 21:35Speaker 4: this airs, my phone will be ringing and it'll be
- 21:38Speaker 4: Joe and he's gonna be like, you need to.
- 21:40Speaker 3: I should like text him, And I'm done with this.
- 21:43Speaker 4: Because we have this conversation all the time, Like when
- 21:45Speaker 4: I do games and I don't care honestly, Now Joe's
- 21:48Speaker 4: a little different because he I really don't care who wins, right,
- 21:51Speaker 4: I just want a good game. Right.
- 21:53Speaker 6: But as you're doing the game, if you look on
- 21:55Speaker 6: Twitter and you go to social media, why do you
- 21:57Speaker 6: like this team? Why do you like the Blue Jays?
- 21:59Speaker 6: Why do you hate the Dodgers?
- 22:00Speaker 4: Right? And then two seconds later somebody be like, why
- 22:02Speaker 4: do you love the Dodgers? Why do you hate And
- 22:04Speaker 4: it's the same within a minute of each other. That
- 22:07Speaker 4: was just depending on how you look at it.
- 22:09Speaker 3: That wasn't me.
- 22:09Speaker 5: We didn't hear the broadcast. That was some complaints from
- 22:12Speaker 5: some family and some friends and some other people around
- 22:14Speaker 5: because they're rotten for us, you know. So, But going
- 22:19Speaker 5: back to Trey, going back to Trey, Uh, there's going
- 22:22Speaker 5: to be no restrictions, really, you know what I mean.
- 22:24Speaker 3: I think that we were really deliberate and careful with.
- 22:27Speaker 5: His innings this year, his first full season, and there
- 22:30Speaker 5: wasn't an innings limit this year, and it's going to
- 22:33Speaker 5: be a normal workload for him next year. I think
- 22:36Speaker 5: just being very mindful of his offseason work. We've already
- 22:38Speaker 5: been in touch with him numerous times about when he's
- 22:40Speaker 5: starting to throw, and I think, look, looking ahead, man,
- 22:44Speaker 5: you pencil him in to make pretty regular starts for us.
- 22:47Speaker 5: If that means thirty two, great, you know, if it
- 22:50Speaker 5: means twenty seven, great, But we're looking for him to
- 22:53Speaker 5: just lot right into the rotation.
- 22:54Speaker 6: Did you keep him hidden a whole year on purpose?
- 22:55Speaker 4: Because there's this big conspiracy theory that you guys didn't
- 22:58Speaker 4: want to bring him up too early because we knew
- 23:00Speaker 4: what we had and we don't want to show anybody.
- 23:03Speaker 5: There was maybe a little bit of gamesmanship, but at
- 23:06Speaker 5: the same time, you're not trying to call a guy
- 23:08Speaker 5: up in and disrupt everything he's been. He's been doing,
- 23:11Speaker 5: you know, just a transition to the big leagues.
- 23:14Speaker 1: You know.
- 23:14Speaker 5: He came up and I think there was like two
- 23:15Speaker 5: weeks left in our season and he pitched against Tampa,
- 23:18Speaker 5: pitched against Kansas City, and then pitched against Tampa again.
- 23:22Speaker 6: You know, all non playoff teams, you know, but all.
- 23:25Speaker 5: I kind of must win games to try to win
- 23:27Speaker 5: the division, you know, So we the one time we
- 23:30Speaker 5: thought about, Okay, Boston was in there. We were playing
- 23:32Speaker 5: Boston at home and possible playoff opponent. Do we want
- 23:36Speaker 5: them to see him because it's a unique look, like
- 23:38Speaker 5: it's it's tough to game plan for unless you've seen it,
- 23:41Speaker 5: So that that played into it a little bit. That
- 23:43Speaker 5: was kind of the appeal to have him pitch against
- 23:45Speaker 5: the Yankees as well, against a veteran team that can
- 23:47Speaker 5: game plan really well.
- 23:49Speaker 3: But no, we didn't. We didn't hide him.
- 23:51Speaker 5: I think we wanted to wait for the right time
- 23:54Speaker 5: that we were really comfortable that he could contribute when he.
- 23:56Speaker 3: To come up.
- 23:57Speaker 2: I have aim more something really grinding my gears that
- 23:59Speaker 2: I think you're gonna like. It's about Dylan's pace. We
- 24:02Speaker 2: had him on yesterday. He signs with you guys, and
- 24:04Speaker 2: then of course, if you're a fan of say the
- 24:06Speaker 2: Padres are gonna miss him and you're pissed that he's
- 24:09Speaker 2: going somewhere else whatever. Right, so we see a lot
- 24:12Speaker 2: on social media and you just get the endless like, oh,
- 24:15Speaker 2: if Reuben Nablin, the Padres pitching program couldn't get him
- 24:19Speaker 2: to be a number one, then like this is such
- 24:21Speaker 2: a bad signing whatever. I basically told this to him, Yeah, yesterday, Okay,
- 24:25Speaker 2: So I just wanted to get your take on how
- 24:27Speaker 2: you guys had conversations with him and this is zero
- 24:30Speaker 2: knock on prior teams. Let's also remember Dylan has had
- 24:34Speaker 2: cy young high level voting periods right and finishes in
- 24:38Speaker 2: his lifetime. So I just want to get your take
- 24:40Speaker 2: on that, because part of his answer was about, you know,
- 24:42Speaker 2: his slider shape, and it seemed like he was giving
- 24:45Speaker 2: us a little taste of Hey, you can grate a pitch,
- 24:47Speaker 2: but then what if I open up a little more
- 24:48Speaker 2: and then you can see that pitch better? Is the
- 24:51Speaker 2: pitch really grading well in terms of the shape, but
- 24:53Speaker 2: they're seeing it out of my hand? So I just
- 24:55Speaker 2: thought he got really granular, and it sounded like he
- 24:57Speaker 2: did that with your team.
- 24:59Speaker 5: He did, Yeah, he's he's a he's a sharp guy,
- 25:02Speaker 5: you know. And I think that when you're presenting yourself
- 25:06Speaker 5: to these players on a zoom call with the agent
- 25:08Speaker 5: and all this, you didn't get a yeah. I mean
- 25:11Speaker 5: that might have been next if you didn't sign, might
- 25:13Speaker 5: have just tried to show some bells and whistles off.
- 25:15Speaker 5: But it was weird, Like I think, it was an
- 25:18Speaker 5: hour and a half conversation and we all on the
- 25:20Speaker 5: call kind of hit it off, you know, Pete Walker, Graham, Johnson,
- 25:23Speaker 5: Sam Green, bullpen coach and assistant pitching coach. They you know,
- 25:28Speaker 5: kind of had some ideas, you know, on a power
- 25:30Speaker 5: point to say, here's where we think obviously respecting his
- 25:33Speaker 5: stuff and his swing and miss stuff is profile of
- 25:36Speaker 5: all of his pitches. Dylan was pretty adamant about, Hey,
- 25:40Speaker 5: how can you help maximize my potential?
- 25:42Speaker 3: And that kind of opened a door for us.
- 25:43Speaker 5: And I think what we've been we've been a really
- 25:45Speaker 5: good job of hiring coaches that have good content, but
- 25:47Speaker 5: they can coach it, you know. So when you get
- 25:49Speaker 5: into that little presentation some biomechanical stuff, some pitch design
- 25:53Speaker 5: stuff with Sam and Graham, and then you kind of
- 25:56Speaker 5: finish off the pitching thought as a whole with Pete
- 25:59Speaker 5: Walker was going into year fifteen with the Blue Jays.
- 26:02Speaker 5: It's a pretty inviting thing to have for a picture
- 26:05Speaker 5: who's very well aware of how his stuff works. So
- 26:08Speaker 5: we felt when we hung up the phone that it
- 26:10Speaker 5: was a really good match. He had some really cool
- 26:13Speaker 5: feedback in that in that call, and you know, Scott
- 26:17Speaker 5: Morris followed up with Ross and said he was really
- 26:19Speaker 5: impressed with what we had to offer. So it happened
- 26:22Speaker 5: quick really. I mean we signed him maybe like a
- 26:24Speaker 5: week later after that call. And so everyone's different. You know,
- 26:27Speaker 5: some guys they don't want all that information. We have
- 26:30Speaker 5: it all, and he was a guy that really seemed
- 26:32Speaker 5: like he wanted to hear it all, so that I
- 26:35Speaker 5: think played into it.
- 26:36Speaker 3: And Dylan's an easy guy to.
- 26:38Speaker 7: Like, right. Last one. First of all, Trey needs somebody
- 26:42Speaker 7: to throw with. I'm just twenty minutes south of him,
- 26:45Speaker 7: so give him my phone number. If he needs somebody
- 26:48Speaker 7: a long toss I'll go, Ye are you.
- 26:50Speaker 3: Still long, Austin? Are you still long?
- 26:51Speaker 1: Toosson?
- 26:52Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 26:53Speaker 7: Yeah, I'm high school coach. I got to show these kids,
- 26:55Speaker 7: I'm pretty sure. By ucl Is gone though. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 26:58Speaker 7: but it's the days are numbered. But my last comment
- 27:02Speaker 7: is during the World Series, we have a group thread
- 27:05Speaker 7: that you're not on called the Round Up Slayers. It's
- 27:09Speaker 7: it's Brad Hasse, drag Yesovich and we were all going,
- 27:14Speaker 7: I mean, it's it's the Crew, Veto Chaer Belati, everybody,
- 27:18Speaker 7: Carlo Coda. We were all going to come up if
- 27:21Speaker 7: you guys won the World Series, we were going to
- 27:23Speaker 7: come up and surprise you at the parade. So just
- 27:26Speaker 7: remember that when you're pushing the rest of the year.
- 27:29Speaker 5: Okay, okay, all right, Well that is a carrot at
- 27:32Speaker 5: the end of the stick that is like no other.
- 27:34Speaker 5: To try to win it next year, joining the parade
- 27:38Speaker 5: and if I do see you guys, there'll be some
- 27:41Speaker 5: beers involved and drinks and beyond me.
- 27:43Speaker 1: That was it that pushes you over the top.
- 27:45Speaker 3: Yeah, that's all that's all I need. Right, So I
- 27:47Speaker 3: want to know.
- 27:47Speaker 6: Where your cleats are They still hanging somewhere?
- 27:49Speaker 3: Yeah, there's some backfield in Saint Pete, you know, somewhere.
- 27:52Speaker 4: Three Carlos Klado he got them put them on.
- 27:58Speaker 8: What was his name, Kretzi who you said Carlos was
